Alex? He thought I was interested in Alex? I try to stifle the laughter that I can already feel bubbling within me at the thought of that. What ever could have given him the impression that I was interested in Alex as anything more than a friend? All I did was talk to him and get to know him. The same thing that I thought I was doing, or at least trying to do, with everyone here.

“I’m sorry,” I apologize after he sees my poorly contained mirth. The serious tone of our conversation abruptly changed into something considerably lighter after my reaction to his topic change. “I was never interested in Alex like that.” I shake my head at the thought of it. “He’s a great person, but . . . Alex as anything more than a friend? It never crossed my mind.” I try to catch a brief glance of him out of the corner of my eye before I continue, “I’m a little surprised you were even paying attention to me with all the attention that was being lavished upon you.”

Liz's initial reaction isn't too surprising. Alex had told me it wasn't true, but it was somehow good to see it. To know that she and Alex weren't really something. Alex and her never crossed her mind, she says. It would mean more if she'd said that she would have dated me, but she didn't say that...

“I’m a little surprised you were even paying attention to me with all the attention that was being lavished upon you.” she continues.

I squirm a little at that, not sure what to say. We'd talked about that the first night when we were sitting alone in the house before Alex came in drunk. I'd told her that I wasn't comfortable with all the attention. I'm almost surprised she brought it up again but I can't blame her.

"Yeah, well, I'm glad that seems to be over," I say, feeling my face get red. How can I tell Liz that I'd noticed her from the start -- from the first instant I saw her? "But you're, well, you're pretty easy to notice. I'm sure you know that. I bet at home, all the guys watch you."

That conversation with Liz in the house that first night is probably my favorite memory of this whole trip so far. It's right up there with the way her face lit up after seeing her family tonight.

“Yeah, well, I’m glad that seems to be over.” His reply is nothing less than what I had expected, even the faint amusement and relief that could be heard in his tone. “But you’re, well, you’re pretty easy to notice,” his words surprise me into catching his eye. “I’m sure you know that. I bet at home, all the guys watch you.”

What? That was something I had not expected. I’m stunned by his words and torn between feeling shocked, confused, or embarrassed. Guys watching me? He has to be kidding. His words have me shaking my head once more, “No,” I answer. “Kels is the one that usually got the attention and stares when we were out. I would always tease her about it, and she would just roll her eyes, throw her arm around my shoulders, and tell me I was seeing things.”

I look down at the water and smile just thinking about it, about how great it was that she was able to come. That really was the greatest part of the evening—having her and my family here to celebrate with me. I turn to Max and find him looking at me, the fond look in his eyes makes my smile strengthen. He really is someone I’d count as friend. And his is a friendship is one I hope to keep even after this show is over, despite the distance that would separate us.

“You’re not trying to put me off Kyle now, are you?” Isabel asks, raising an eyebrow. “I’m sure whatever Kyle has planned for tomorrow night will be fun, fun, fun.”

"Oh, absolutely," I say, hoping to keep some of the sarcasm from my voice. "Nothing more fun than a rousing night of parchesi."

Okay, so I really don't have any idea what he has planned, but look at how he just went home before the night's barely started?

Kels gets the attention when Liz and she are out together? I don't understand that!

"You're kidding!" I say. "Kels is cute and all, but you... Maybe those guys in Georgia need to get their eyes checked," I smile at her, hoping my voice shows amusement, not the stronger emotions I'm acutally feeling. She's so amazingly beautiful. I want her so very much. It's hard to even talk to her like this. Why couldn't Kels have been right? What I wouldn't give to have her actually be interested in me.

I don't want to end this, but I'm feeling so much energy right now. I could jog around the neighborhood. I know I need to get to bed, but I'm gonna have to burn this off, somehow...

"I think I'm gonna take a swim. You wanna join me?" I ask.

I look away after his compliment, but I can hear the smile in his voice just the same.

“I’m going to take a swim,” his voice tentative, as if he didn’t want to offend me by ending the conversation. “You wanna join me?”

And just like that I find myself struggling to breathe, and I can feel the knot forming in my stomach. No matter what my answer is, it will be a mistake. It will be a mistake to be with him. It will be a mistake not to. I want more than anything to say, “Yes, I’d love to, and, by the way, I think I’m falling for you,” but I won’t. I can’t. And as tempting as an offer as it is, it might just be too tempting.

I may be a masochist for being around him, seeing him with Tess everyday and doing nothing about it, but I’m not a gluttonous masochist.

Turning away from the iridescent water to meet his warm expression, I answer with my thought out reply, “As tempting as that offer is, I think I’ll have to take a rain check.” I rise to my feet and smile, gesturing back towards the house, “I think I’m going to head inside.” Maybe just to change before heading out for a quick run. As nice as this conversation was, I think I’ll need the endorphins.

I'm actually glad that Liz declines my offer although another part of my mind is burning with disappointment. I want her around. I don't want this to end. And to see her in a bathing suit again! I feel like I'd explode.

"All right," I tell her. She's so amazingly beautiful, especially out with the moonlight reflecting off the water. Every glint off her flawless skin and amazingly smooth hair. I want to touch it, to run my hand down over those silky strands, to thread my fingers through it ... I want her so much that my body is tense with retrained emotions. It's hard to keep breathing.

"Good night, then. And Happy Birthday," I say. I long to say that I'll see her in the morning, but I'm leaving early with Tess. I don't know if she'll be up or not. I only hope she'll still be around when we get back in the evening...

ISABEL

I roll my eyes, “I’m sure that Kyle has something a little more interesting planned.”

I take a sip of my drink. God, I hope that Kyle has something a little more interesting planned. I know that its a little short notice but this town is filled with nightclubs and all great, fun things.

“He has mentioned any plans has he?” I ask, chewing my bottom lip nervously.

"Nope," I admit with a shrug. It's really not my problem so I can't be bothered to even pretend to care. "Haven't heard a word about it. Maybe he doesn't have any plans yet."

I pause for a moment, wondering what I would do if I had plans with Isabel. "Now, if I were the one taking you out, I might want to do something really different, like Disney World, but that's a little too far away so maybe I'd save that for a second date." Actually, I'd been thinking of going up that way with Maria, thinking that she'd love the place, but that ship has definately sailed. Maria and I are over.

"I might plan an afternoon of Antique shopping or maybe surfing lessons would be good," I say. I'd prefer to be active, with the surfing lessons, and I know she looks hot in a bikini. But she might prefer something that doesn't mess up her hair. "And after, dinner at a French restaurant and then a night at the new Jazz club I saw a flyer for at the radio station," I say. Yeah, that sounds like a great Isabel kinda date. Expensive, but she'd be worth it, I think.

“All right,” he says from his seat by the pool. “Good night then.” His tone was as warm as ever, as was his smile as he looked up at me. It quelled more of my nervousness than I would care to admit. “And happy birthday.”

“Good night,” I reply with a smile of my own. “And thanks again for . . .” I pause, not sure how to finish that. There is so much that I have to thank him for. “Thank you for everything.” With that said, I turn back towards the house and leave him alone in the quiet peace of the evening.

I can’t believe that I just said no to swimming with Max. I think have lost my mind.
