Shadows -- Part 51
Shout Out: To all the people who nominated me a huge THANK YOU!
Part 51
It was late; she knew she should go get some sleep. She had had a long day and tomorrow promised to be just as tiring but she couldn’t sleep. She kept replaying the scene when she saw Max and cursed herself again for almost revealing her identity. She had known it would be hard, that when she saw Max that he might sense here there, but she had not been prepared for the total sense of helplessness and the sudden urge she felt to run up to him.
I can’t believe I almost did that! Liz thought again, furious at herself. She curled up in the chair by the balcony, staring at the familiar V formation. She wondered how a planet so far away from Earth could cause so much of trouble here. She wondered if she would have found herself waiting for her soul mate to complete her if Max hadn’t been sent to earth. Would she have found someone else who was the right one? Would she have been happy? Or would she have died that day in the Crash Down?
She didn’t know. Right now she couldn’t imagine her life without ever have known Max, without loving him, but at the same time all of these thoughts didn’t matter. She would never know if she could have been happy having never known Max but it looked as if she might find out if she’d be happy without him. Would she have been happy without ever having known him? Was she happy now? Was all this pain she had gone through and was still going through worth it? Maybe being normal and having a normal, uncomplicated life wasn’t so bad after all.
But even as those thoughts crossed her mind, her heart objected almost immediately. She knew she would never regret meeting Max Evans or learning about the aliens. No matter what had happened so far and what would happen in the future, even if she never got to go back to her life as Liz Parker, she would never regret a moment of her life. Though there had been tough times these past two years, she had never felt so happy and complete as she did when she was with Max.
She heard the door open and she turned her head slightly to see who it was. She smiled a little when she saw it was Alex.
“Hey.” She whispered softly. “What are you doing up?”
Alex came up to her, sitting down next to her. “I was going to ask you the same thing.” He replied with a smile.
Liz just shrugged a little and turned back to watching the sky. Alex sighed, watching her silently torment herself. She had to stop this. She kept blaming herself, kept holding herself responsible for today. Serena and Alex had tried to make her feel better but she didn’t stop berating herself.
“Liz, stop!” Alex finally burst out in exasperation, feeling her emotion roll of her in waves. Liz looked at him in surprise.
“Stop what?” she asked.
“This!” Alex exclaimed spreading out his arms in emphasis. “Stop torturing yourself over today. So you were about to make a mistake! Big deal! We all do, you are no exception. And I got to you in time, so no harm, no foul right?”
Liz shook her head remorsefully. “But what if you hadn’t gotten to me on time Alex?” Liz asked. “I would have ruined this!” She looked at him with defeat. “I couldn’t control it. I couldn’t stop myself from going over to him. I was so-I was so…stupid…” she finally whispered out, looking away from him and at the carpet. “I was weak and…” Suddenly she gave a frustrated shout. “God, I hate this!” she cried. “I hate that I have to be around him and not be able to talk to him, or touch him! I hate that we have to spend our lives this way…in the shadows.”
Alex reached for her hand and held it gently in his. “I know Liz. I don’t like this anymore than you do but we have to do this.” He told her. “For them, for our friends.”
Liz looked back up at him. “How can we help if we don’t even know the enemy we are fighting?” she asked, her voice challenging. “For God’s sakes, we are just as in the dark as they are! How can we possibly help them?”
“No Liz!” Alex protested. “We are not in the dark like them. We know more about what has happened and probably what might happen if we don’t do this than they do.” He turned Liz’s face to make her look at him. “Now we were told this for a reason! Everything happens for a reason. Helping them, winning this is the reason Liz!”
“Kivar won’t be the only loser in the game Alex.” Liz told him, her voice distant and grim. “We’ll be losers too. You know why? Because no matter how this turns out, no matter if we win or loose…we’ll forever be living our lives this way. In hiding, away from our family and friends…and I don’t think that is winning.”
Snatching her hands away from Alex’s she got up and stormed out of the room. Alex sat there for a while, long after he heard her door slam shut. Alex was a bit stunned by Liz’s retorts. She had been bitter and resentful. Alex shook his head. It hurt him to know that all of this had changed Liz. She had always been the strong one, the one who was always positive about the outcome, no matter what the odds. But right now she sounded so defeated and bitter. He knew it would be hard for her but it was hard for him too! He wished she would see that! He sighed and got up. No matter what he himself was going through, he had no doubt Liz would be worse off, because of all that she had gone through with Max and Tess. So, pushing aside his own hurt he headed back to bed, determined to talk to Serena and Liz in the morning. They couldn’t go on like this if there was a danger of Liz messing up at the wrong moment. No matter what Liz thought, more than just their friends’ lives depended on them at the moment. Remembering his dream at Serena’s house Alex knew that the world’s fate rested on their shoulders too. And he wasn’t sure if he was comfortable with that burden or that if he could shoulder it alone. He needed someone to be there with him, sharing this with him, helping him along. He needed Liz.

Note - I know Liz seemed a bit dark but I found that appropriate change in her. Tell me what you think

Shadows -- Part 52
Author's Note: Liz is disillusioned so yeah she is a bit dark but Ithink Alex does understand what she is going through only he has never seen Liz fall apart like this and he is scared for her. He depends on her alot and in case you haven't noticed Liz hasn't exactly been fully appretiative of Alex yet. So Ive got to fix that
Hmm got another wonderful, answer filled part. Don't you love it when I finally lay down some of my cards?
Part 52
Kivar watched the deserted road from his place at the window. Roswell lay a few miles from where he was and from this warehouse he could see the town in the distance. He watched quietly, unmoving. His eyes had a cold glint in them and there was an expectant smile on his face. He knew that this time he would get what he wanted, there was nothing stopping him. Neither Liz Parker nor a misguided ex-king. Neither was there a backstabbing second in the scene. He did have Ava in Nicholas’s place though but it was different with her. He trusted her and had faith in her abilities and that wasn’t something he placed in his followers very often.
Ava was stronger than most people knew. He doubted if she herself knew the full extent of her powers. But that’s what he preferred. The less anyone knew about her powers the better, even if it was Ava herself. Surprise was good; it would work for him. And as long as Ava was in the dark about the extent of her powers the better…for him. He didn’t want to take the chance of her trying to over throw him and he knew she could.
Kivar recalled about how he had found out on Antar why one pod had been declared defective. He had always known there were two but never why until he had managed to get his hands on one of the scientists who had designed them. The poor man had tried to be brave and loyal but in the end he gave in…they always did. Kivar had to admit he was impressed by how long he had lasted under torture. He would have liked someone who was like him in his army.
Too bad he didn’t live through it. He thought with a smirk.
His thoughts turned to what he had found out about the dupes. They had been labeled as rejects when Zan, Rath and Vilandra were found not to have enough powers designed into them. They would not have survived a war at all…a small skirmish maybe but nothing that lasted long. But Ava…Ava had been given a lot of power, too much in fact. She had been given most of the powers that were originally supposed to have been divided out amongst the four. Kivar was not sure whether that had been an accident or mistake but he knew that the second this was realized another set was made and the mistake corrected.
The scientists were supposed to have destroyed the first pod but by then Kivar’s attack had reached fever pitch and they had sent both pods to Earth as a precaution. Kivar grinned to himself. The precaution had turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him. It had given him access to the bitter and jilted dupes. He didn’t care much for the other dupes though; he was basically interested in Ava. And he was waiting for her now.
He had sent her to Roswell hoping to infiltrate and break the small group. It should be easy with two members dead. Especially since Liz Parker seemed to be the only one who had managed to hold this mismatched group together. With her gone…well it should a snap. And with Alex Whitman gone from the scene as well, Vilandra would be a very easy target. Kivar grinned to himself. Somehow, everything seemed to be working for him. He hoped that was a good sign.
Ava hadn’t checked in to report though so he had sent Rath. He knew she would be furious at his action but he had made it clear that he wanted her to check in every few days.
Kivar heard a timid knock on the door and he frowned. He knew instantly that Ava had not come. She would not have knocked.
“Enter.” He commanded. He looked away from the window to find Rath standing there nervously. “Where is she?” He demanded from Rath, almost impatiently. Kivar smiled inwardly when he saw Rath cower.
“She-she said she’ll come tomorrow. She couldn’t leave tonight without raisin’ suspicion.” Rath told him.
Kivar frowned but didn’t comment. Normally he wouldn’t stand for this but he was willing to trust Ava’s decision. “What about the plan? How is it coming along?”
“She says she’s workin’ on it. She’ll tell you about it when she arrives here tomorrow.” Rath now paused, unsure how to deliver Ava’s message. “Ummm…she has a message for you.” Rath said nervously.
“What is it?”
Rath licked his lips nervously. “Well she said she doesn’t want you sendin’ us over there and jeopa’dizin’ her plan. She said that she’s in charge of it…not you.” Rath cringed when Kivar abruptly turned to face him, expecting to be blown up for even carrying such a message to him. But to his surprise Kivar chuckled.
“Is that all she said?” Kivar asked in amusement.
Rath, still surprised by his reaction nodded. Kivar laughed again but didn’t say anything. He began to turn his back to Rath, indicating that he could leave when Rath spoke up.
“Kivar, your Highness…”
Kivar turned around and looked expectantly at him.
“I-I found somethin’ else when I was returning.” Rath told him. Kivar raised his eyebrows in a questioning look. “That blond chic, Michael’s girl, Maria…I saw her headin’ to Las Cruses.”
“How do you know that?” Kivar asked with interest and just a bit of alarm.
“Saw her goin’ on the highway. She had had car trouble it seems. But then I followed her partway.” Rath replied proudly.
“Did she see you?” Kivar asked.
Rath shook his head. Kivar looked at him thoughtfully. “Well, we can’t have her going to Las Cruses and figuring things out.” He replied. “Follow her and keep her from finding out anything. Take Lonnie with you.”
Rath nodded and began to head back.
“Rath…” Kivar’s deadly calm voice stopped him. Kivar gave him a cold, malicious look. “I don’t have to tell you how important this is to me.”
Rath nodded, knowing there was a veiled threat there. Kivar turned back to the window, letting Rath leave.
Under no circumstances is this girl to figure out about what we have done in Las Cruses. It could ruin everything! Kivar thought vehemently. It could ruin their carefully made plan and it could reveal Ava…

Shadows -- Part 53
Part 53
Maria let out a relieved sigh when her Jetta rolled to a stop on the university campus. She had almost had to turn back when her car had started acting up on the highway. She had had to stop to let it cool down before starting her trip again. That’s why she was pretty late in getting to Las Cruses.
Even at this hour though the grounds were swarming with kids out partying. Maria smiled as she saw one guy turn to give her an appreciative whistle. If she didn’t have Michael she could really enjoy this. But Maria quickly reminded herself why she was here. She began to make her way around campus, trying to find the building she was looking for. But it was dark and she was tired. Searching for a dorm house was not going to be easy.
She considered stopping someone to ask but when she spotted a group of drunken guys heading towards her with a leery smile she quickly abandoned that thought. She began to head the other way, wanting to get as far away from them as possible.
“Why didn’t I bring Michael?” she asked herself. She had barely walked a few more steps when she found her way blocked by a tall guy. She looked up startled and backed up a step.
“Hi.” The guy smiled at her.
“Hi?” She said nervously, her eyes darting for a way out. Maria didn’t like the way he was looking at her so she backed up further, trying to get away.
“Have I seen you somewhere before?” the guy asked using a really old pick up line.
“Oh no.” Maria stammered. “No, you haven’t.”
“Well then, I’m Tom.” He told her, moving closer.
Maria backed up again. “And I’m not interested.” She told him.
“I can change your mind.” Tom said with a suggestive smile. He put his hand on her shoulder and Maria jerked away.
“I gotta go and do this…um thing…” she replied, turning around and walking away.
Tom quickly stepped in front of her, stopping her. “But we’re not done yet.” He insisted. He began to reach for her again. Maria was now getting scared and was about to consider running when a hand jerked Tom’s off her.
“I think she says she wants to be left alone.”
Maria looked up in astonishment at Michael’s angry face.
“Michael!” Maria whispered in relief. She was still looking at him but he didn’t even glance at her. He was instead standing protectively in front of her with his arms crossed, staring Tom down. Tom appeared to be a bit intimidated by Michael and backed off with his hands in the air.
“Sorry, didn’t know she was taken.” He said.
“Well she is!” Michael snapped. Maria’s heart skipped a beat when she heard him say that. Tom quickly backed away and once he was gone Michael turned to face her.
“What are you doing here alone?” he demanded fiercely.
“Did you follow me?” Maria demanded, half pleased but trying to avoid his question. Michael though knew what she was doing and asked again but this time more gently.
“Maria, what are you doing here?”
“Clearing my head?” she said meekly. When Michael just stared at her she sighed. “I’m here because of Alex.”
Michael frowned. “Alex? Why?”
Maria pulled out the emails from her pockets and showed them to him. “Remember when Alex went to Sweden? Well I had this feeling in me…like something was wrong so I followed up on Liz’s work and guess what I found! Alex never went to Sweden!”
Michael groaned. “Not again Maria!”
“No! Listen to this. The Olsen’s have never heard of any exchange student and neither has Leanna! And so I checked these emails out! I mean where was Alex when he was sending me emails from Sweden if he was not really there? Turns out he sent these from right here. Las Cruses, New Mexico!” Maria explained.
Michael was now frowning. He took the emails from her, scanning them and then looked back at her. “You sure?” he asked.
Maria nodded. Michael looked at them again before saying. “You should have told me…I could have come with you instead of following you.” He grumbled, admitting he did follow her.
“So you believe me?” Maria asked happily.
“Not exactly….but I do believe this is something worth looking up.”
Maria smiled, knowing that was good enough. “How’d you know I was lying to you?” she suddenly asked him.
It was Michael’s turn to smile. “I just did.” He replied.
They began to walk back to the car, hand in hand. “Sooo…”Maria began. “Am I like really…taken?” she asked, peeking up at Michael.
Michael pulled her close and gave her a slow, sweet kiss. Pulling back, he stared in her shining eyes and smiled. “From the day I kidnapped you and stole your car.” He told her.
Maria grinned and leaned in to give him another kiss. She couldn’t believe Michael had just admitted that. Michael finally pulled away reluctantly. “Let’s go and get some sleep. We’ll look this up in the morning.”
Maria stopped him before he started to walk. “Thank you.” She said seriously.
Michael nodded. “You’re welcome.”

Part 54
** Dream **
Alex didn’t know when he had fallen to sleep. One minute he was lying in bed, wide awake thinking and worrying about Liz and the next he was here. He frowned. Where was ‘here’ anyway? And why was it so familiar? He turned around, taking in the place. It was a lake surrounded by tall trees and flowers. He looked up at the sky and found it sprinkled with sparkling stars. He saw a huge boulder and a camp site not far off from where he stood. With a start he realized that this was a slightly altered version of Frazier Woods.
Why am I in Frazier Woods? Alex wondered.
He was standing there, wondering and trying to decide if this was a dream or a soon-to-be nightmare when he spotted a lone figure standing near the edge of the lake. It was just a silhouette against the dark sky but he recognized her instantly. How could he not, after all, recognize Isabel?
He was more surprised by her sudden appearance than by her actually being there in his dream. He wondered if she was just a figment of his imagination. Without meaning too he whispered her name out loud, “Isabel…”
Although he had barely spoken above a whisper, she heard him. She slowly turned around at the sound of her name. Alex stepped closer to see her better and when he saw her he was sure she was just a dream because she was wearing the same red dress and had her hair the same way she had when she had first dream walked him and when they had danced. He continued walking towards her, figuring that he might as well be satisfied with a dream version as he could never be close to the real Isabel again, but then he saw the look on her face.
He stopped in his tracks when he saw the confusion, love, sadness and joy pass across her face. He realized with a start that she wasn’t a part of his dream! That she was really there! How was this possible? Did he do it or did she involuntarily enter his? Alex didn’t know what to do next. Should he go to her and risk her knowing he was alive or should he just disappear?
Isabel looked at him in slight puzzlement, seeing his hesitance. “Alex?” she called out. At the sound of her voice there was nothing more he wanted to do than to go to her and take her in his arms and kiss her senseless. But he still hesitated. He remembered what he had told Liz today. That they had to be careful and couldn’t just jump into the other partner’s arms whenever they saw them. So Alex sadly began to back away.
“Alex, where are you going?” he heard Isabel cry out in alarm. “Please, don’t leave me…”
Her teary voice tore at his heart and he wanted to scream in frustration. Even though he wanted to he knew he couldn’t take the chance. God, he was warning Liz against getting close and here he was considering doing just that!
“No, by going to him I almost gave us away.” Alex heard Liz say suddenly. He whipped his head around to find Liz sitting calmly on the boulder behind him in her pajamas. Liz gave him a small smile, indicating that she knew what he was thinking before continuing. “But I trust you. You won’t do that. You’ll be careful.”
“L-Liz! What are you doing here? In my dream?!” Alex asked her.
Liz smiled teasingly at him. “Who says this is your dream?” she asked.
“What do you mean?”
Liz jumped off the boulder and came up to him. She stood next to him and stared at the lake where Isabel was still standing…waiting for him.
“This isn’t your dream.” Liz told him. She looked away from the water to him and gave him a small smile. “This is Isabel’s dream.”
“Okay, then what am I – and you – doing in Isabel’s dream? Did she manage to dream walk us?” Alex asked.
Liz shook her head. “No…. Consider this my way of saying sorry and thank you.” She shrugged. “I kinda blew up at you tonight. I know you were just trying to help. I was just very scared at what I could have done with Max. Plus you’ve done a lot for me these past few weeks.”
“Are you saying you can dream walk?” Alex asked in disbelief. Seeing her mischievous grin he cried. “Since when?”
“A few days.” Liz told him. “I’d been experimenting with Serena and was waiting for the right time to tell you. I think this is the right time.”
Alex managed to pull himself out of his stupor and asked, “Okay, so why are we here.”
“Like I said I needed to say sorry and thank you. The best way to do it is to help you spend some time with Isabel.” Liz replied.
“Liz…I can’t.” Alex sighed. “You know I can’t…it’s too dangerous.”
“Says who?” Liz challenged. “I brought you into Isabel’s dream so that you can spend some time with her without her knowing it’s really you. She’ll just think it was a part of her dream.”
“How do you know she won’t be suspicious if I just turn up in one of her dream?” Alex asked.
“Because she dreams of you a lot.” Liz replied softly.
“You invaded her thoughts?” Alex asked aghast.
Liz shook her head. “Of course not. I just saw some of them involuntarily when I was trying to connect to her.” Liz looked around her, spreading her arms wide. “And just so you know…I didn’t create the scene. Isabel did.”
Alex looked back at Isabel who was now staring sadly at the water again, her arms wrapped tightly around her.
“Go to her Alex. It’s okay. She’ll never know.” Liz urged. “I know you want to. You just never asked Serena to help you. So I did.”
“You sure she’ll not know?” Alex asked cautiously.
“Not unless you tell her.” Liz teased.
“What about you? Won’t she remember you?” Alex asked.
Liz looked at him with a smile and then back at Isabel with concentration. When she spoke again Alex was wearing jeans and a button down shirt. “Not now she won’t, she’ll just remember you here.”
“Thank you Liz.” Alex told her. He was really happy that he had a chance to do this. He wanted to be with Isabel so badly, especially since he saw her at the Crash Down today. Liz smiled at him.
“You’re welcome.” She replied. She stood on her toes and gave his a peck on the cheek. “See you in the morning.” She said and then she was gone.
Alex took a deep breath and walked to the water’s edge where Isabel was standing. He touched her shoulder, turning her around. Isabel’s bright brown eyes looked back into his with joy and love as she whispered. “I miss you so much.”
“I know. Me too.” Alex replied, hugging her close. He then kissed her gently and let himself be washed over by the love and happiness he was feeling by just being with her. When they broke apart, Isabel laid her head on his chest and he heard her say softly. “I love you Alex.”
Alex swallowed back the lump in his throat as he held her closer. “I love you too.” He replied in a choked voice.
** End Dream **
* * * * * * * * * * *
Alex opened his eyes slowly, not wanting to wake up. But he knew he had to end the dream or else he might never be able to let Isabel go. When he was finally fully awake he noticed that someone was sleeping next to him and he realized it was Liz. She had her hands entwined with his and was sound asleep herself. Alex smiled as he gently extracted himself from her grip, not wanting to wake her. Seeing her holding on to him Alex knew she had been keeping his and Isabel’s link all night. He bushed a light kiss on her forehead, determined to make her a huge breakfast for her favor.
As he headed to the bathroom a smile touched his lips as he thought about all that they had done. They had danced, had a moonlight walk, and had a picnic near the lake. Then they had lain together and talked as they watched the stars. He had never felt so happy and complete as he felt now, at least not since his ‘death’. But now at least he knew how much Isabel still loved him and he had, he hoped, managed to tell her just how much he loved her as well.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Isabel sighed happily as she rolled over. The dream she had had seemed so real like Alex was really there with her. She hadn’t wanted to leave but she had had too. She was surprised by the clarity of her dream and how well she remembered it. She hardly ever remembered them so clearly but today she knew how each kiss felt, how each flower smelt. She felt his love for her when he looked at her. She knew and felt every detail.
But even in her joy she felt her heart break. It just reminded her that Alex was dead, that he wouldn’t be there in school with her, that he wouldn’t be at the Crash Down or hold her ever again. Her smile made way for her tears as she curled up in her blankets and began to cry softly. How could something that felt so real be so fake? It felt so right in Alex’s arms, like he was really there. How could she have imagined all the love that was apparent between them? She sobbed harder, clutching her pillow to her chest, trying to grasp on to something, anything that could remind her of how it felt to be in Alex’s arms. Safe, loved and wanted.
“But it was just a dream…”she kept whispering to herself as she cried. “It was just a dream…” And she knew it could never be anything more again.

Part 55
Kyle watched the sun come up, rising slowly but surely over the horizon. He had been up all night taking care of Tess. He had been angry at her and was hurt but that didn’t stop him from caring about her, from loving her. When he had gone back home after his talk with Maria, all he wanted to do was curl up and go to sleep for hours. He didn’t want to see Tess and be reminded of the baby and how, now, she could never be his. Least of all had he wanted to see Max, especially with Tess. But that’s exactly who he had seen the first thing he came home. He had wanted to pummel him right there and then but he had taken one look at Tess and he felt his anger drain away. She was sleeping but even then he could tell something was wrong. And talking to Max had confirmed it.
He had no idea what was wrong with her but he didn’t care. All that he could think when Max asked him to stay with her was that Tess needed him. His sleep was forgotten as he sat there the entire night, holding her hand and whispering soothing words when she used to start panicking in her sleep. At first he was confused by the words she kept repeating in her sleep.
“Alex…key…stay away…no!”
The first few times he had heard her cry out those words he panicked. He thought about waking her up but she looked so tired that he had to think that idea through. In the end he simply held on to her tighter, urging her to stay calm and that he was right here. And much to his surprise that seemed to work. She seemed to calm down when ever he used to do that.
Kyle shifted around in his place so that he was sitting comfortably and was facing Tess. He watched the light play across her stomach and he smiled. It looked like an angel was sleeping in a halo of gold light. His gaze traveled up to her face and he saw her sleeping peacefully. He silently thanked God that her dreams seemed to have faded away a few hours ago. Tess shifted slightly, rolling over to her side. As she did so a golden strand of her hair fell across her face. She twitched slightly in annoyance and Kyle smiled. He gently pushed back the piece of hair for her, tucking it behind her ear. He felt this irresistible urge to lean down to kiss her. Knowing he couldn’t, he instead gave her a loving kiss on her forehead. He drew back abruptly when he felt her stir.
Tess’s eyes fluttered open and she looked around a bit disoriented. She noticed Kyle and her lips curved into a slight smile.
“Kyle?” she asked, her voice raspy from sleep.
“Hey Tess.” Kyle greeted with a gentle smile, pushing down the surge of love he felt at seeing her waking up. “How are you feeling?”
Tess tried to sit up but winced slightly, touching her head in pain. “I’ve been better. I’ve got this killer headache.” She told Kyle. She managed to prop herself up with Kyle’s help. “What happened?” she asked Kyle.
“You tell me.” Kyle replied, watching her carefully for any sign of illness. “I came home to find Max here with you. He said something about you not being well and how you didn’t want to be alone.”
“Really?” Tess asked with a frown. “I don’t remember talking to Max at all.”
“What do you remember last?” Kyle asked, a bit worried by her memory loss. Just how sick was she last night?
“Well I remember Ava accompanying me home…”Tess said. She scrunched up her face as she tried to remember. “She sat with me…no wait…she sat outside and we talked and watched a movie… I think…” Tess sighed. “I can’t remember what we did to be honest. It’s all like a big blur.”
“Do you remember anything else?” Kyle asked, pushing her slightly to think hard.
Tess thought for a moment before she nodded. “I remember Max coming…but I don’t remember what he said or what we did. I just remember feeling really tired. The next thing I know I’m in bed with you here next to me!”
“Well Max was here way before I showed up. I am assuming you guys talked about something. The baby perhaps…?” Kyle tried to keep the bitterness out of his voice but failed. Thankfully Tess didn’t notice it as she paled at Kyle’s last words.
“The baby!” Tess gasped, sitting upright. She put her hands on her stomach. “There was something I felt last night…I was scared…so scared…of something or someone…”
Kyle wrapped his arms around her comfortingly, trying to ease her agitation. “If it’s important, it’ll come back to you.” He soothed.
But Tess shook her head. “I’ve got a feeling it won’t.” she replied seriously. Kyle didn’t say anything as he let her go.
“You stay here and rest. I’ll get you some breakfast.” He offered.
Tess smiled gratefully. She looked as if she wanted to add something but then didn’t say anything. Then she again tried to speak.
“Kyle…”
Kyle froze at the way she said her name. It held apology, regret, sadness and timidness. He knew instantly what was coming. He didn’t want her to say anything. He wanted to forget that there was anything more between them than what he himself had erected: sibling love. It was a lie, true but it was one to protect himself and to protect Liz. It made no sense to tell the truth anymore. But even though he wanted to stop her, he didn’t say anything, in a way wanting to hear the words from her.
“I’m sorry…”Tess said softly. Kyle turned to look at her, ready to tell her to stop but he couldn’t make his voice work. The lump in his throat refused to let him speak. “I am so sorry for doing this to you…I wanted to tell you. I-I would have…” she looked away. “I-I didn’t want you to find out the way you did….”
“Tess, please don’t…”Kyle began, finally getting his voice to work but Tess stopped him.
“No, I want to. I-I have to…” she pleaded with him. So Kyle nodded hesitantly, telling her to continue even though his heart screamed at her not to say the next words.
“I know how upset you were—are… but you have to understand. I-I um…love Max. He’s my destiny.” Tess paused, pushing back the tears as she lied to him. She wanted to tell him that she loved him, not Max at least not anymore but she recalled his words at the prom and continued, hoping she wouldn’t cry. “I know you think of me as family…as a s-sister…. I don’t think you would have wanted your real seventeen year sister pregnant.” She tried to laugh but it came out as a weak attempt.
Kyle listened to her talk, all the while wanting to grab her and tell her that he loved her and definitely not as a sister! But he kept quiet, believing that she truly loved Max.
“I wouldn’t have wanted this for you whether or not you were my sister.” Kyle replied honestly.
Tess looked at him silently before asking in a low voice. “Are we…are we okay?” she asked. “I mean…I need you to help me through this because I’m scared. I’m really scared Kyle and I can’t do this without your help. And if we’re not okay then…well I don’t know…”
Kyle sat down next to her and held her hand in his. “I can’t honestly say that we’re okay right now…” he replied before pausing. He gave her a small smile. “But we will be…soon.”
Tess smiled a little, sad that he was hurting because of her. Kyle abruptly got up and began to head out. “Let me go get some breakfast for us and we’ll first tackle our biggest obstacle! My cooking!” He said jokingly, trying to lighten the mood. He quickly headed to the kitchen.
Tess watched him leave with a sad smile. “I wish it would have been you instead of Max…” she whispered before realizing in shock what she had just admitted out loud. She sucked her lips, wondering where that had come from. She felt her eyes fill up with tears as it hit her just how much sorry she was that Max was her destiny and not Kyle.

Shadows -- Part 56
Part 56
All night he had tossed and turned, the day’s events playing in his mind till he was sure they would be forever embedded in his head. And maybe they would be. He tried blocking out the day, forgetting his meeting with the others, forgetting the little girl he had seen at the UFO Center, forgetting about that blonde girl there but they kept coming, again and again. He couldn’t sleep, he was afraid that if he did then he might have to relive the dreams he had about Liz and he didn’t think he could handle that after today. Finally, before the sun had barely come up, he had decided to head to the only place where he could find any peace.
Liz’s balcony was just as he had left it, with the candles on the windowsill, and the blanket he had used, laying neatly folded on the chair. Max picked up the blanket, bringing it up to his nose. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, trying to remember Liz’s scent and find some solace in it. It was gone now and he was desperately trying to recapture it, refusing to let it slip from his mind.
He wanted to remember everything about her, the way she talked, the way she felt, the way she pushed her hair back, he wanted to remember every single thing about her. He could not forget her, not even if he tried. How could Maria even think that he didn’t love her? How could Kyle doubt him? For him nothing in the world was as real as his love for her. He would give up everything, his life in Roswell, his throne, everything if he could just have her back in his life. But then reality came crashing down on him. Liz was never going to come back into his life, not even by a miracle. He had Tess now…whether he wanted her or not.
What had happened yesterday with the others weighed heavily on him. Seeing the disgust, the anger in their eyes made him hate himself even more. He slid down to the floor, his head in his hands as he felt waves of guilt and disgust sweep through him. The others did not need to remind him how this looked like a betrayal to Liz’s memory; he tormented himself over it each and every day. He hated that he had done something that would make the others even consider doubting his love for Liz. He hated himself even more for being unable to support Tess will all his heart because no matter what happens, he will always wish that it would have been Liz instead.
“What do I do? What can I do?” Max wept, feeling the tears slide down his face. Wiping his eyes, he looked up at the sky, seeing the way the sun had turned the sky blue. Underneath it’s vastness he felt alone and abandoned. He felt as if the world had left his side the day Liz died. He tried not to think about the day she had died, tried to forget that day entirely for more reasons than one. But everything around him came to haunt him. Everything around him reminded him of that day. No matter who he saw or where he went, he couldn’t run away from the memories. Going to the Crash Down and not seeing her there, seeing Maria and be reminded that she had once been a part of his life, school, everything. And then there was Tess. Whenever he saw her he was again reminded of that night. The night that shouldn’t have happened. The night that Liz died. And even though he tried not to think about it he couldn’t ignore the fact that the last time he had seen Liz had been when they were fighting. More than anything else he had hated himself for fighting with her that day. He knew it was irrational but he couldn’t stop himself from thinking that.
He heard Kyle’s words in his head, warning him not to hurt Tess, telling him that he kept hurting everyone he cared about. Max swallowed back the fresh wave of tears, wanting to hate Kyle because he was right. He always ended up hurting the people he loved. He remembered how he had treated Isabel before, when she had wanted to leave Roswell. He remembered the way he had demanded and then black mailed Isabel to stay in Roswell. He swallowed the bitter taste in his mouth when he thought about the words he had said
** Flash **
“Isabel, if I have to, I will do everything in my power to keep you here. I will tell our parents you have a drug problem. I will notify your teachers that you have cheated on every test for the last 3 years. If you ever leave Roswell without my consent, I will physically drag you back. For the last time, the answer is no. Period.”
** End Flash **
Had he really said all that stuff to the one person in the world who he loved unconditionally? Had he really ordered her? He remembered the desolation in her eyes as she had pleaded with him.
** Flash **
“You’re killing me!”
** End Flash **
Max knew he had hurt her very badly then, she had refused to talk to him that day but Liz’s death had made her push aside her feelings so that she could comfort him, because she knew he was hurting and needed her. Max felt humiliated when he remembered the way Isabel had looked out for him after that first day. How could she be so gentle with him when he had trampled upon her dreams and hopes? What had happened to him? When did he stop being her brother and become her king? He had vowed never to treat her like Zan had, like a subject but he had done just that.
He couldn’t fix a lot of his mistakes, he knew he couldn’t but he could try and fix the ones he could. He could make up with Isabel for his behavior and he could try to sort things out with Maria and Kyle. He sat up a bit straighter, now resolved to make things right. He had hurt too many people, now it was time for him to fix things.
But first there was someplace he wanted to go to. Someplace he couldn’t make himself go to without shame since Tess’s news. The cemetery. Max got up, wiping his eyes dry before heading back down. He had to go to the cemetery. He needed to go there. Maybe being close to Liz would help him get through what he was about to do. It would help him remember that sometimes love isn’t enough to make forever last.
On his way to the cemetery Max stopped and bought a dozen white roses. He always got them for her, always white and always a dozen. It reminded him of the day he had come to her balcony with a mariachi band. It was the last time he had seen her before she broke his heart.
Once he reached the gates, he slowed down, breathing deeply. He hadn’t come here since he had found out about Tess and the baby; he felt like a traitor to her and couldn’t bear to come here. He made his way slowly through the cemetery. He passed Alex and stopped, thinking sadly of him as well. He saw the fresh roses and knew that both Maria and Isabel had been here recently.
Max looked up from Alex’s grave; looking towards the direction Liz lay. He frowned when he saw someone else there as well. He was too far to see whom but the man looked so familiar…. Max began to walk towards him, and as he got closer he stopped for a moment, startled. His breath caught in a gasp but then as he moved closer he let out a sigh. The man had looked so much like Alex that he was sure for a second that it was him.
Max finally reached Liz’s grave. The man glanced up from it and at Max, a shocked look on his face. His blue eyes seemed distressed and he looked ready to run. Max smiled at him, trying to tell him it was okay. Max once again looked the man up and down, can not helping but be reminded of Alex. The only thing different was that this man had slightly long sandy blonde hair with blue eyes.
The man watched Max warily, almost as if he was scared. Max gave him a reassuring look.
“Max Evans.” Max said, holding out his hand.
The guy hesitated before putting his hand in Max’s. “Matt Thomas.” He replied.
The name sounded odd coming from the man and Max once again was reminded of Alex. The way Matt said his own name sounded unfamiliar, as if he was not used to saying his name. Max briefly wondered if he was Alex’s relative but then brushed aside that thought. He knew it couldn’t be because Alex didn’t have relatives here. But there was something off about the guy, something which tugged at Max’s memory. Ignoring the nagging in his head Max bent down and placed the roses on the ground. He briefly touched the earth before smiling gently at Liz.
He felt Matt watching him with interest and he stood back up, feeling awkward under Matt’s curious look. Max turned to look at Matt who was watching him unabashedly. Max met his gaze with a soft, sad smile.
“How did you know Liz?” Max asked Matt.
Matt appeared a bit taken a back by the question but then answered. “She was a friend. Someone I knew in school.” He replied.
“I don’t remember you…”Max replied, thinking where he had seen Matt before.
Matt shrugged. “I doubt you would.” Since he didn’t bother explaining further, Max let it slide.
“So, what was she to you?” Matt asked. Seeing Max’s guarded look Matt chuckled, although weakly. “You got her roses…she has to mean something.”
Max smiled a little, looking back at the roses he had brought. “She was my…she was…I love her.” Max replied in the end.
“Love or loved?” Matt asked, looking at him with interest.
“Love…I still do. She was – is – it for me.” Max replied unashamedly.
Matt didn’t say anything but nodded. Max watched him curiously; sure he had seen him somewhere before and not just in school.
“Are you sure I don’t know you?” Max asked.
Matt nodded his head. “I’m sure.”
Max nodded thoughtfully, not fully believing him. “Well, I better be going.” Max replied, suddenly wanting to leave.
“If you want I can leave.” Matt offered, noticing Max was uncomfortable around him.
Max shook his head. “No, I have to go. Really. I’ll come by later.” He began to back away. “Nice meeting you.”
“You too.” Matt replied.
Max turned and quickly walked back out.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Once Max was out of sight, Alex let out a sigh of relief. He had been stupid to come here at this time. He should have come at night! But he had desperately wanted to see their graves, and in a weird, sick way was amused by the entire thing.
He shouldn’t have taken the chance though. Thank god he had Liz change his appearance, but he was sure Max suspected who he was. He had briefly considered running but then realized that would look suspicious if he had not stayed; desperately hoping Max wouldn’t realize it was him. Once introducing himself as Matt Thomas, his new identity, Alex had tried to see what was going on with Max. He felt Max’s emotions and was intrigued. He appeared a lot calmer and at peace than he had felt last night. Alex had wondered why.
He wondered if Max had finally accepted that he had to move on, get over Liz. Was that why he was here, to say goodbye and maybe get her blessing? Unwittingly that thought alone had made him angry but the second Alex had seen the way Max had placed the flowers and touched Liz’s grave he knew instantly he still loved her. The soft smile on his face and the loving look as he had bent down had wiped away any doubt. Max was still madly in love with her. He hadn’t really needed to ask to confirm it but had asked anyway. He had been overjoyed and somehow greatly relieved at Max’s answer.
Alex felt the tug in Max’s emotions though as he had answered. Almost as if he was feeling guilty. Alex could tell that Max was juggling his affection between Liz and Tess but with Tess it seemed…forced. His conversation today had proved that. Max still loved Liz. He was sure of it. But he wasn’t sure what was going on with Tess. He didn’t understand why he felt Max trying to resist her while at the same time trying to accept her.
Abandoning such confusing thoughts for the moment, Alex bent down and pulled out one rose from the bouquet. He smiled as he smelled it. He knew just what to do with it.
Liz could use some cheering up. Alex thought, turning to leave, rose in hand. And what better way than by a rose from Max.

Shadows -- Part 57
Pat 57
Michael and Maria walked briskly towards the dorm rooms situated on the Las Cruses University campus. They had been up for a while, having spent the night in Maria’s car and had had to wait for a suitable time they could go check out Alex’s old room, without it looking suspicious.
“In daylight, this all seems like a bad idea.” Michael grumbled as Maria led the way into the dorm. Maria turned around to give him a scolding look before slipping her hand in his and giving it a tight squeeze.
“Michael, I can’t do this by myself. I need you on board here.” Maria told him with a pleading look. Can’t able to resist her desperate look, Michael sighed, rolling his eyes, but inside he was smiling.
“Let’s get this over with.” He replied gruffly.
As they neared the room where Alex had stayed Maria slowed down a bit, biting her lip nervously. Her mind was screaming at her, asking her what she was trying to prove, if it really mattered anymore. Would discovering the truth really help matters? Would it bring back her best friends into her life again?
But I need to know what really happened. Just so I can finally move past this. Maria told herself. And she was right. She needed to move past all of this and she wouldn’t be able to until she was at peace herself. And that would only be when she had found the cause of Alex’s death.
“Maria?” Michael’s voice broke her line of thoughts. She looked at him to find him waiting expectantly for her.
“Sorry, just spaced out for a second there.” She told him. “Okay, you know what to do if someone is in there right?”
Michael nodded. “I’ll handle it.” He answered.
“Good.” Maria murmured with a nod. Taking a deep breath she knocked on the door, praying that no one was there. After waiting a while to see if anyone would open the door Maria turned to look at Michael. Nobody was there. She nodded slightly at him, telling him to do his stuff.
Michael stepped forward and Maria stepped aside to let him do this work. Making sure no one was around he quickly placed his hand on the lock, using his powers to open it. Maria shot nervous looks around, hoping no one would see them. As soon as she heard the soft click of the lock, she rushed past Michael but Michael held her back.
“Let me go first.” He told her. Pushing open the door slowly, Michael entered the small dorm room, his eyes scanning the room for anything unusual. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary he let Maria enter. She quickly closed the door behind her, locking it.
“Okay, what next?” Michael asked her. He looked around the empty room, not a trace of furniture was around. Apparently nobody had lived here for a while.
“We look around.” Maria replied, moving into the rooms.
“That’s your plan?” Michael asked incredulously. “We won’t find anything here. Alex has been gone from here for three months now! The place is empty!”
“Something might have been left behind.” Maria replied.
“This is ridiculous Maria!” Michael cried.
“It can’t hurt to try Michael.” Maria replied patiently. “I don’t want to leave anything out.”
Michael sighed, knowing it was useless to try and reason with her when she was in this mood. He also began to look around for anything that might have been around when Alex was here. As he was looking in the drawers in the kitchen, his hand brushed against the counter and immediately he saw a flash.
** Flash **
Someone taking out a long crystal thing from the drawer.
** Flash **
“It’s not easy!” Alex yelled at someone. His face was haggard and scared. “It will take me time!”
** Flash **
“I’ll do want you want…just-just don’t hurt her…”
** End Flash **
Michael snatched his hand back when the flashes stopped. Something was wrong. Alex had been here but he was held here against his will. He could feel his frustration at being here and his concern for the other’s safety.
“Maria!” Michael called to her, rushing to her. “Maria, he was here!”
Maria shut the cupboard she was going through. She looked at Michael in shock. “What do you mean? How did you know for sure?” she asked.
“I had a flash. I touched the counter and I had these flashes of him…” Michael explained. “He was here and was held against his will!”
“Oh God!” Maria whispered. “By whom?”
“I don’t know!” Michael replied in frustration, running his hands through his hair. “I couldn’t see. But something of importance was kept here, in this room. A…a long…rod, crystal I think, of some kind. I don’t know how to explain it.”
“Any idea where it was taken.” Maria asked.
Michael shot her an irritated look. “Maria I have flashes, I am not a crystal ball!”
Maria ignored his remark as she said, “Well, I found nothing here. We have to think of our next step.”
“The best step is to go back to Roswell.” Michael told her. She looked with disbelief at him.
“After what you saw?” she asked. “No Michael! I am going to get to the bottom of this!”
“This is dangerous! Who knows who his captor was and what they wanted with him.” Michael argued.
“That’s why we need to solve this puzzle!” Maria replied. She now headed back out in the hall. Michael followed her, closing the door behind him and locking it. He was just about to move away from the door when a student appeared. He saw Michael and assumed he was knocking there.
He stopped and looked at them curiously. “Excuse me but nobody lives there anymore. Can I help you?” he asked.
Maria and Michael turned to the guy, worried at having been caught and wondered what to do next. Then Maria got an idea.
“Actually we’re looking for a friend who stayed in this room for a while.” Maria told him.
“Maria what are you doing?” Michael hissed in her ear but she ignored him as she turned to smile at the student.
“Did you know him?” she asked.
“You mean Ray?” the student asked.
“Ray?” Michael repeated in confusion. “No—” he began but was cut off by Maria.
“Yeah, Ray. Did you know him?” she asked.
The guy scratched his head. “Not really. I just knew of him. He was here a couple months. Hardly said a word, very weird guy.”
“Did he say what he was doing here and maybe like why he came in the middle of the semester and all?” Maria asked.
The guy got a weird look on his face. “No, you don’t understand. Ray never left the room. The only time he opened the door was when they delivered his Thai food.”
“Thai food?” Michael asked, noticing the recognition flash across her face.
“Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food fetish if you ask me.” The guy replied with a shrug.
“So, wait.” Maria said, once she got over the piece of news. “You mean he literally never left the dorm?”
“Well, at least not in the daytime. There was this one night I was out partying. I come back pretty late. I saw him coming out of the Litvack building.” The guy told her, thinking back. “It's, like, 4:00 in the morning. We're the only two people on campus. We're like five feet away from each other. The guy doesn't even acknowledge my presence. Pretty creepy.”
“Yeah, sound it.” Michael replied shortly, but was already feeling an odd sensation of alarm in his head.
“So, what’s in the Litvack building?” Maria asked curiously. She knew instantly that this was an important piece of news.
“Computers. I mean I'm not really into that kind of stuff, but apparently the university has this incredible super computer.” The guy told them.
“Super computers?” Maria asked, her eyes wide.
“Yeah.”
She glanced at Michael and saw that this was starting to get him curious too. “Well…um we’d better go and check that out.” She said. She smiled sweetly at him. “Thanks for your help.”
The guy smiled. “No problem.”
Maria and Michael quickly left the dorm house. “You think I was kidding now?” Maria asked him.
Michael looked at her quickly before continuing forward. “I never really doubted you. I just think this is a bad idea.” He replied.
“You know that that won’t stop me from going to check the Litvack building right?” Maria asked with a small smirk.
Michael sighed. “I know. Lead the way.”
TBC....

Shadows -- Part 58
Part 58
The small car bumped along the dirt road, the road carefully hidden from view of the traffic on the highway. The driver of the car cursed in anger as yet another bump made her jerk. Ava sighed in irritation as she finally spotted Kivar’s base. She had more important things to do than to report to Kivar, trying to pacify him with their small victories. He didn’t understand that it wasn’t these small battles that mattered; it was their ultimate goal that really mattered. And if Kivar kept expecting her to check in with him every few days, it might make her job more difficult.
But he’s still in charge of this over all operation. Ava thought with more than a little contempt. She was his closest in command but that didn’t mean she particularly like him. He was hasty and impatient. He didn’t understand that it would take time for them to defeat the Royal Four. It had taken him an entire army of dead skins to make him finally realize that. That’s why Ava had taken her time. She had skillfully planned and outlaid her idea throughout the year.
She had gone to great lengths trying to gain their trust, even going as far as to allowing Lonnie and Rath to show their true nature to them so she would appear to be on their side in contrast. But when Lonnie and Rath had tried to take the show into their hands at New York at the summit, she was afraid that her cover had been blown. Only by quick thinking and some use of her powers had she managed to regain control of the operation. She still cursed the other dupes when she thought abut how close they had come to being exposed.
Ava finally stopped the car in front of the broken down warehouse. Entering the warehouse she noticed that there appeared to be some of the skins missing. Shrugging it aside she walked briskly to Kivar’s office. The guards that stood outside Kivar’s door stepped out of her way almost immediately even though they had been ordered not to let anyone enter. They had faced the burn of Ava’s anger once before and had no intention to do so today. Ava smirked when she saw they cower away.
Pathetic lot. She thought. They will barely last a minute in battle.
On entering the office, Ava cast a quick look around, briefly noticing that a few additions had been made since her last visit, most probably to make things more comfortable for Antar’s ruler. Her eyes finally landed on Kivar himself who was sitting behind a small desk, much like the President of some firm.
“You are making this more difficult that it is Kivar.” Ava bluntly told him, as always not bothering with any formal greetings. She sat down in front of him without being told to do so. A flicker of irritation passed across Kivar’s face at her attitude but that subsided just as quickly.
“I’m only safeguarding my interests.” Kivar replied.
“You’re making it more difficult for me to do my work.” Ava repeated firmly. “It isn’t easy to leave Roswell unnoticed. I have to cover my tracks whenever I come here. And that isn’t too easy when they are suspicious of you already!”
“You will cover your tracks just fine.” Kivar replied emotionlessly. Although it had sounded like a statement, Ava heard the order in it.
Ava knew she better back down or Kivar was going to turn nasty. Though he allowed her to speak her mind with him, he didn’t like to be pushed and she knew that he was getting more and more impatient with her. Forcing herself to relax, Ava sat back in her chair.
“Let’s just get down to what you want to know so I can leave.” She told him.
Kivar looked at her quietly for a moment, almost as if trying to read her but then he nodded curtly. “What have you to report?” he asked.
“Where do I start?” she asked.
“The beginning.” Kivar replied immediately. “I want to know everything that transpired since that first day.”
Ava nodded. “Well, that would mean the day I posed as that woman who passing through town.” Ava said.
“Did you manage to accomplish what you were supposed to do?” Kivar asked.
“I managed to make Michael come to me didn’t I?” Ava asked irritably. “Of course it worked. I ‘accidentally’ bumped into him, spilling a drink on him and me. While I fought over it, I managed to tweak my way into his head. And when I touched his hand, all I had to do was push a flash into his head.” Ava smirked as she thought about how easy it had been. “He thought that he really saw me hitching a ride. And I was standing right in front of him.”
“And I gather that you made sure he saw you fighting against the skins and that he ‘saved’ you.” Kivar added.
Ava nodded a bit proudly. “Yes, while I was making him see the flash I managed to plant the idea in his head to go by where I wanted him to find me. And it worked perfectly. He passed by and I made sure he thought I was losing the fight. He came in to save me, thus bringing me back to the others.”
“Tell me, was our report true?” Kivar asked with interest. “Is Liz Parker really dead?”
“Yes. That was a piece of news that really was good to hear. Liz Parker was always a danger.” Ava replied.
“Good….”Kivar replied. “What about the rest of your work?”
“The fights in the group have started. Sides are being drawn and taken. Right now it looks like it might end up as aliens versus humans.” Ava told him. “It has mainly to do with the alien pregnancy.”
Kivar suddenly smiled. “That is probably your greatest accomplishment Ava.” He told her. “Your mind warps seem to get stronger each time.”
Smiling herself Ava nodded. “I am most proud of that. They still don’t have a clue to what actually happened that night. They still have no idea that there is no baby. They haven’t even slept together!”
“That is good to hear.” Kivar said. “But I have one concern. Tess and Max will need to connect with their child. What happens when they don’t?”
“I’ve already taken care of that.” Ava replied smugly. “I’ve made sure that Max sees and connects with the baby and so does Tess.”
“You’re mind warping him on a daily basis?” Kivar asked with a small frown.
“Not Max as much as Tess. I have the most access to her. I drop by her house and just do it little by little.” Ava said. “I have already managed to make her believe she was in pain and that her child was hurt. The day I took Tess home after their meeting in which they told the others… well even though I was outside I could still reach her mind. Just a little push and timer and not only did she and Max believe they connected to the baby but she even thought he was hurt.”
“Is it wise to mind warp her so often?” Kivar asked. “You are forgetting that there are side effects. There might be times when she might not act like herself, that might warn the others or make them suspicious.”
“I’m in a lot more control. It will not happen regularly.” Ava told him confidently.
“But still be careful. You know what can happen, you have seen it…. It took us a while to clear up the mess in Las Cruses and back here.” Kivar reminded her.
“No one is suspicious here.” Ava told him. “Liz is dead and she was the only one to be on a look out for.”
“Don’t be too sure.” Kivar muttered.
“What do you mean?” Ava asked in alarm at his tone.
Instead of answering her directly Kivar asked, “Do have any idea where Maria DeLuca was this morning before you came here?”
“No.” Ava replied with a frown. “She wasn’t home when I woke up.” She paused as something struck her. “Come to think of it, I haven’t seen her since she stormed out of Michael’s apartment yesterday. She didn’t come home….”
“That’s because she’s gone to Las Cruses…”Kivar told her sharply.
Ava snapped her head up to look at him with alarm. “Las Cruses?! When?”
“Rath saw her going out yesterday after meeting you.” Kivar told her.
“I-I assumed that she had spent the night with Michael…..” Ava stammered.
“You shouldn’t assume!” Kivar snapped. “This is could be very dangerous for us. Even though we made sure not to leave anything there you never know what she might find there!”
“I’ll get right to it!” Ava cried making a move to get up. But Kivar made her sit back down.
“Sit down. I have already sent Rath to tail her.” He replied.
“Rath!” Ava cried out. “He’ll ruin everything!”
“We sent him with Lonnie. We couldn’t afford to send anyone else. And it doesn’t matter anyway. She will not find anything there.”
“Rath and Lonnie are idiots! They’ll probably mess this up. I have to take care of this myself.” Ava muttered under her breath. To Kivar she replied, “I’ll try to handle everything from Roswell.”
“I expect you to.” Kivar told her.
Ava nodded, getting up. “Fine. I’ll send word how things are soon.” She paused. “And don’t send your men to Roswell. I don’t want things to get complicated.”
“Just be sure to check in with me.” Kivar answered.
“If I can I will.” Ava returned. Then she headed back out, silently cursing how she could have not realized Maria was gone.
She wasn’t really nervous about what Maria could find, but more what mistakes Lonnie and Rath could do there.
I’ll have to fix things from here. Ava thought with a sigh as she sped her car back to Roswell.

Shadows -- Part 59
Author's Note: You can be sure Tah and Lonnie will be there to make trouble in some way! After all they're dupes! And as for the mind warp...hmmm well you'll see what's up with that...and Serena's background, well thruthfully I've not really thought about it until you brought it up but i'll do something, maybe weave it in..let's see where it goes. And isabelle, glad my story was interesting enough to keep you glues for two hours!
hope you don't abandon it later though!
Part 59
It hadn’t been easy finding a professor who was willing to let Maria and Michael check out the computers in the Litvack building. Even Professor Bergin who was slightly willing to talk to them about the super computers was not willing to let them check them out. Michael was convinced that this was a sign that they should return to Roswell.
“Look, if we keep pushing it’ll get suspicious.” Michael argued. “And it’s going to get dangerous for you. I came here to protect you, not get you into harm’s way.”
They were sitting on some benches outside the Litvack building, with Maria ready to pounce on Professor Bergin once he emerged from the building and Michael ready to return home.
“But we’re almost there!” Maria told him. “I can feel it Michael. We are so close!”
“Close does not mean you’ve figured this out.” Michael replied. “And what if you’re wrong? What if all of this is some big mistake?”
“It’s not.” Maria replied quietly, but with a steely resolve in her voice. “I know it’s not. I feel it inside of me that it’s not!” She looked firmly back at Michael and he knew it was going to do no good to argue with her. He’d have to drag her kicking and screaming back to Roswell if he wanted to make her leave.
“I don’t like this Maria.” Michael finally told her with a dejected sigh.
Maria’s eyes softened. She placed a light kiss on Michael’s lips. Pulling back she gave him a small smile. “Neither do I.” She replied.
Then she got up from the bench, having just seen the professor leave the building. She scurried after him. Michael rolled his eyes but got up and followed her. He had meant what he had said to Maria. He didn’t think this was a good idea but he wasn’t going to let her do this alone. Whether he wanted to or not, he was going to help Maria with whatever plan she cooked up. When he got to them he found them already arguing.
“Look Ms. DeLuca,” Professor Bergin was saying, “I have already told you, non-students can not gain access to the computers here. I can tell you about the computers but I can not let you have access to them.”
Having already tried feeding him a fake story and begging and pleading, Maria decided to use the honest approach.
Well, almost honest…. Maria thought as she tried to coax Professor Bergin into helping them. “I know that Professor Bergin. And I respect that, I truly do.” She replied. She paused just a little before going on. Looking him in the eye she said, “I’ll tell you the real reason why we’re here.”
“Maria…”Michael hissed in alarm. Maria ignored him as she went on.
“My best friend, Ale–um…Ray Whitman, was killed in a car crash a couple of months back.” Maria told him.
“I’m sorry to hear that but what does that have to do with the super computers?” The professor asked, now a bit curious.
“He was an exchange student here. He was here for almost two months and was working on this project.” Maria told him. “It was – um – classified. Well, we need to get that project. It is essential to us. And this was the computer he worked on. We need to know what he was working on.”
Professor Bergin regarded Maria and Michael carefully, contemplating if this was the truth. After a moment he sighed. It seemed to be awfully important to these people. And he didn’t see what harm it could be to let them check out the files as long as he was there.
“Well, Ms DeLuca, Mr. Guerin, if he wasn’t working on breaking some codes, then I don’t know what use the computer was to him.” Professor Bergin told them.
“Codes, Professor?” Michael asked curiously. “What do you mean?”
“This computer has the potential to be very useful in cryptography.” The Professor told them, although with some hesitation. “In theory the quantum computer can break just about any codes.”
“Any code?” Maria asked.
“Any code.” The professor confirmed.
“Why would he need to break a code?” Maria asked herself.
Michael now turned to the professor, his interest piped up. “Professor Bergin, can you please let us see what he was working on?” Michael asked. “Look, we wouldn’t be asking this if it wasn’t important.”
“He’s right.” Maria added. She threw a small smirk towards Michael. “He said the word ‘please’. It has to be important.”
The professor smiled a little at the look that passed between the two. After contemplating this a bit more, he sighed and rubbed his eyes wearily. “All right…” he agreed reluctantly. “I’ll help you. But…” he put in when he heard Maria squeal in delight. “But I have to be there to supervise you. We might need someone working there to help.”
Maria nodded quickly. “We really appreciate this Professor Bergin.” She replied with a happy smile.
The Professor nodded. “Meet me here by around two. I should be done with my classes by them and maybe Matt will be around to help us.”
“We’ll be there.” Michael said. “Thanks.”
The professor with a last nod walked away. Maria now turned and gave Michael a hug. “We’ll know soon.” She predicated.
Instead of answering Michael just held her close, somehow fearing what they might find.

Looking him in the eye she said, “I’ll tell you the real reason why we’re here.”

funquejunque thanks for your feedback and as for M/L..well that's aloaded question.
Okay guys you wante to know what the 'Shadow Club' were up to...
Part 60
Serena stepped out of the bathroom after a shower, walking into the kitchen. She smiled gratefully when she saw the pot of coffee that was lying on the counter. Pouring herself a cup she walked over to where Liz was sitting on the breakfast table with papers scattered around her. Liz didn’t even notice Serena enter the kitchen as she busily scanned the notes she had just made. Frowning she scratched some points out, scribbling something in the margin.
“Where’s Alex?” Serena asked Liz, trying to get her attention. She smiled in amusement as Liz’s head snapped up all of a sudden seeing she was not alone in the room.
“Oh, Serena, ‘morning.” Liz said. She scrunched up her brows as she thought about where Alex had said he was going. “Well…he mentioned something about going to the cemetery.”
“The cemetery?” Serena asked with a confused look. She sat down opposite her. “Why would he want to go there?”
Liz grinned. “He wanted to check out our graves. Said he needed to amuse himself.” She told her. She laughed when she saw Serena’s skeptical expression. “Yep, that’s Alex for you; seeing the humor in the weirdest things. And don’t worry, I changed his appearance.” Liz told her before she could ask.
“You handling your powers okay?” Serena asked.
Liz nodded, brining her hand to her face and forming a small power ball in her hand. Grinning, she closed her hand, her hand returning back to normal. “Perfectly.” She replied.
“We’ll try to work on your dream walking powers today.” Serena told her with a slight smile. “You still need to work on that.”
“I did pretty well last night.” Liz told her.
“Last night?” Serena asked. “Did you dream walk anyone?”
“Alex and Isabel.”
“Liz! You didn’t!” Serena cried out. “You know you can’t just pop up into people’s heads.”
“I know.” Liz replied. “I did it more to help Alex….He was…well feeling quite upset after seeing Isabel and I didn’t help matters yesterday when I snapped at him last night. I know he was just trying to help.” She shrugged. “I just wanted to make up and say thank you. So I let him enter Isabel’s dream. Kinda gave him a private moment with her.”
“Liz that was a very dangerous thing to do!” Serena cried out in alarm. “You’re still new at it. What if you messed up or what if Isabel found out?”
“She didn’t. I was careful.” Liz replied.
Serena didn’t say anything. In part she understood why Liz did what she did. Alex had been upset after seeing Isabel and he had pushed aside his own feelings to help Liz. He kept trying to be the strong one but he needed an escape too. And the best way for him to do so was to see Isabel again without his hiding. She trusted him, knew that he would be careful. She was more disappointed that he hadn’t come to her. She had more experience than Liz did in dream walking. Plus, she wanted him to trust her. She bit her lip and sighed. She couldn’t do anything about it now. What was done was done. She was just thankful that nothing had gone wrong. Serena was more worried by Liz though. It wasn’t like her to do something so irrational. But seeing the stress she was under, she didn’t really blame Liz.
“I guess I understand.” Serena finally admitted to Liz. “But please be more careful. Come to me when you’re about to attempt such things.”
“It was just spur of the moment…”Liz apologized.
Serena nodded, indicating that it was by-gone now. She glanced at the paper Liz had in front of her. She nodded her head to it. “What are you working on?” she asked.
Liz looked down to what Serena was referring to. She picked it up and handed it to Serena. “Just a theory I’m working on.” Liz explained while Serena scanned the notes. She went on to explain. “I’ve been thinking. What if I retraced all the events that have happened so far? Like I did with Alex, I organized each and every thing that had occurred chronologically. Maybe by doing this I can figure out who the spy was/is.”
Serena put down the paper she was handed. She looked impressed. “I think that’s a very wise idea.” She praised. “And these notes look promising.”
“Well, this is just a first draft.” Liz replied, tucking her hair behind her ear in embarrassment.
“No, it’s a good idea and even for a first draft this is good.” Serena told her.
“I’m just not sure of one thing. Quite a major thing actually.” Liz said. “Maybe you can help.”
“Sure. What is it?”
“Where do I start?” Liz asked. “I mean from when do I start listing down what has happened? I mean we’ve been under scrutiny since I was shot. It can’t have been that long…”
Serena carefully thought over this. Finally she replied. “Start with Courtney and her arrival in town. Include Whitaker if you must but she’s not of huge importance.”
“That far back?” Liz asked with a startle.
“Afraid so.”
“Serena, what happened with your information on the spy?” Liz asked curiously, having forgotten about it in all that had recently occurred. “You said you knew.”
“I said I thought I knew.” Serena cleared. “But yes, I still have my suspicions.”
“Care to share them?” Liz asked. “The more I know the better.”
Serena nodded thoughtfully. “Yes, I think I can tell you now. I’m more certain now than I was before, especially since I’ve got a chance to look around Roswell better.” Serena told her. “Just let Alex get back. He should hear this too.”
Liz agreed and went back to finishing her notes. Alex arrived a while later and Serena was the first to spot him. Seeing his new look Serena grinned.
“I take this look is more to your liking?” she questioned.
Alex grinned and ran his hands through his hair. “Definitely an improvement from the last look. And the name is normal, thank god!” he exclaimed. “Now please change me back!”
Laughing, Liz waved a hand over his face and his sandy blonde hair and blue eyes were replaced by his natural look. Alex then grabbed a chair and seated himself across from Liz. Noticing the papers, he shot Liz a mock scolding look.
“What are you up to Liz Parker?” he asked.
“Just a little something to help us.” Liz replied.
“Does that mean color codes, handle names and attendance?” Alex asked, only half joking.
Liz swatted him on the arm while Serena choked back a chuckle. “Come on Alex! I’m not that bad!” she cried out in amusement. She pulled the papers into a pile before shooting Alex a teasing look. “I only intend to have color codes and handle names. Taking attendance would be over the top!”
Serena finally burst out laughing while Alex sighed in fake dejection. “The prim and proper Ms. Parker ladies and gentlemen!” he announced. But he nonetheless listened attentively to what she had planned.
He heard all about how she had used the same technique with him and from when she planned to start. Alex had to admit he was impressed by the idea. When Liz told him what she had asked Serena and her reply he gave Serena a quizzical look.
“Well I’m here and definitely interested.” He told her.
“Well I did some digging, used some of the theories we had concocted in the other timeline.” Serena told them. “But since this timeline is different, I didn’t want to take the chance of assuming wrongly so I did a bit of homework. I found that the skins have been working along side the dupes.”
“The dupes?” Liz asked in surprise.
“All of them?” asked Alex.
“Well, that’s where it all gets obscure. I’m pretty certain Rath and Lonnie are involved but I am not sure whether Zan was or whether Ava is either.” She admitted. “That’s why I didn’t mention it because I have no proof about them. Just speculation from the other timeline and I don’t think that’s too dependable.”
“Well…I don’ think Zan needs to be worried about.” Alex reminded them. “He is dead…and didn’t Ava help Liz save Max’s life?”
Serena didn’t say anything. Liz nodded though. “Yeah, Zan is dead and it can’t be Ava. If it was, she had many chances to hurt us or me, but she didn’t. In fact she was the first one who helped me tap into my powers.”
“I’d still be careful though.” Serena told them hesitantly. “I’m not saying that she is involved but something has been bugging me for a while now.”
“What?” asked Alex.
“Well…Liz didn’t she imply that you could project yourself somewhere else, almost like dream walking awake?” Serena asked.
“I did that with Max when he went to New York.” Liz confirmed.
“That’s just my point.” Serena interjected. “That was too convenient, don’t you think? That you happened to try to connect with Max at exactly the same time when they tried to kill him? Don’t you think that is a bit strange?”
“But-but Ava knew when the summit was and figured out when they might strike.” Liz stammered.
“Even then, the odds of you turning up at the right time…”Serena trailed off. “I just think it’s very coincidental. Too coincidental.”
“She has a point Liz.” Alex pointed out reluctantly.
“If you’re saying what I think you’re saying then why would she try to help?” Liz asked; still not ready to believe what Serena was implying. “Why would she try to help me tap into my powers?”
“That’s another thing…”Serena replied. “According to the tests I did with you when we were testing what your powers are…well according to that you should not be able to do such a thing, especially on your first try.”
“Isabel helped me along.” Liz pointed out.
“Even then. This is a very difficult thing to do; it could possibly have been a higher power on Antar. Isabel herself who was programmed to be able to dream walk did it only once and that too when Max was drugged. Don’t you find it odd?”
Liz didn’t say anything. She just sat there biting her lip and twisting her hair. Alex touched her arm lightly. “Serena has pointed out valid arguments Liz.” He told her softly.
“But you did it Serena. You helped Alex dream walk our friends while they were awake so Alex could relay the message to Maria.” Liz reminded them, stubbornly refusing to accept that Ava was using her all along.
“Liz, I came from the future where we had more aliens on out side. I was given a lot of training. I had to be at par with my powers if I was to help the Royal Four in any way.” Serena told Liz.
When Liz still didn’t say anything, Serena spoke up gently. “Look let’s do something.” She offered. “Today let’s test the range of your dream walking powers and maybe you might prove this suspicion of mine as useless.”
Liz paused a bit before nodding slowly. “Let’s do that.” She finally replied. She looked at Serena and Alex. “It’s just that I really got to like Ava. She seemed so different from Tess and she and I connected…I don’t know.” She sighed. “It seems too difficult to even think about it.”
“We understand.” Serena replied comfortingly. “But just as a precaution…”
Liz nodded. “Yeah, as a precaution.”
“And Alex, I’ve been meaning to ask you.” Serena turned her attention to Alex as she remembered why she was looking for him. “Have you been having any dreams lately, or any memory that is coming back?”
Alex nodded. “I had one a couple nights back but it was the same one. I can’t seem to get past that.” Alex replied. “No matter how hard I try I can’t recall anything from Las Cruses but my memory of Sweden is astoundingly clear. Only a couple of hazy parts. It’s weird to remember things you know never happened.”
Serena thought over this carefully before turning her attention back to Alex. “Alex I would like to try some memory revival sessions with you.” Serena told him. “I’ll try to do something about these fake memories that have been planted. This looks like a very powerful mind warp and we have to be very careful.”
“Will it be dangerous?” Liz asked, anxious for her best friend. She clasped Alex’s hand in silent support.
“Not really. At least not if I do this correctly.” Serena assured Liz. “I’ll just be giving Alex’s memory a little shove to speed up the process.” She gave Alex a questioning look. “You up for it?”
“Sure.” Alex enthused, fighting back his nervousness. “Anytime you want.”
“Okay, then.” Serena agreed.
“Serena, were you there really in Las Cruses with me?” Alex asked suddenly.
Liz and Serena both were a bit taken aback by the suddenness of the question and even Alex looked surprised he had asked it.
“Do you remember me?” Serena asked carefully.
Alex knitted his brows together. “It’s very hazy but I think you were…although I can’t remember where and what we did…I just remember feeling this sense of urgency and struggle when I think about it.”
Serena bit her lip. “Let’s see how the session goes then I’ll tell you. I think it’ll be better to see what you remember first. It’ll be less confusing that way and less forced. I don’t want you to try and force events to take form.”
Liz nodded. “Serena’s right. The best way for you to remember is to form the events yourself and not let some one else form your memory.”
“You’re right.” Alex sighed. “It’s just confusing.”
Serena patted his arm sympathetically. “I know. We’ll work on this soon. Okay, I need to get some stuff. I’ll be back soon and then we can practice, okay?” Serena asked.
Liz managed a smile as Serena got up. “Sure, no problem.”
Once Serena had left Liz picked up her pen and twirled it around. “So how are you holding up Alex?” Liz asked him. “I mean, after seeing the graves and Roswell. I didn’t get a chance to ask.”
“I’m doing okay.” Alex replied. He chuckled. “Not great, I mean it is hard but…I’m managing.”
Liz looked at him searchingly. “You sure?” she asked.
Alex gave her a smile. “I’m sure.” He replied. “But tell me, how are you doing? I mean, really doing?”
“You pretty much saw how I was doing last night.” Liz told him trying to cover her embarrassment by a weak laugh. “God, I can’t believe I said those things to you!”
“It’s okay.” Alex told her. “You were hurting.”
“Yeah, but I didn’t see that you were too. I was so bitter over my own life that I paid no attention to yours!” Liz replied. “God I was so self involved in my misery that I didn’t even notice yours.”
“You’ve been through a lot Liz, more than me. I just had to deal with death…”Alex tried a lame attempt at humor before turning serious. “But you…you have to deal with the end of the world. I can not even begin to imagine how you got through it.”
Liz squeezed his hands tightly and gave him a small smile. “Because I knew what great friends I have and didn’t want to loose them, not even fourteen years into the future.”
“And look where we are now…”Alex joked. Liz let go of his hand and shrugged slightly, not wanting to think about it. After a moment’s silence Alex asked Liz, “So what are your thoughts on Ava?”
Liz didn’t reply immediately. “Well…”she began hesitantly. “It hurts to think about it.” Liz looked back up at Alex, her eyes showing a glimmer of hurt. “That I might have been betrayed by a person I had begun to think of as a friend.”
Alex got up and came next to her. He gave her a hug. “You know it’ll be all right.” He consoled her.
“I know.” Liz replied, not sounding confident at all.
“Oh by the way, I have something to give you.” Alex said suddenly remembering the rose.
Liz looked at him with a curious smile as he reached in his jacket. When he pulled out a slightly squashed white rose she gasped.
“Sorry, it got a bit squashed on its way here.” Alex apologized, handing it to her. Liz took it from him and inhaled deeply.
“Thank you.” She said, stroking its petals.
“It’s from Max.” Alex announced quietly.
Liz froze. “From M-Max?” she asked.
“He was there at the cemetery. For a second I thought he’d recognize me.” Alex told her with a small chuckle. “But you did a good job. Anyway, he was visiting your…um, grave and had a bunch of white roses with him. Once he left I took one out for you. Thought you’d like it. Looks like he comes there often; there were a few dried ones there.”
“He remembered.” Liz murmured in half shock, half pleasure.
“What?”
Liz looked up from the flower to Alex and gave him a warm smile. “That I like white roses. He got them for me when he came with a mariachi band.”
Alex laughed. “Oh yeah, heard about that from Maria.”
Liz smiled at the memory. “That was the last time we had such an easy relationship.” Liz said mournfully. She looked back down at the rose. “Thank you Alex, for giving it to me.”
Alex squeezed her hand gently. “I thought you needed a little cheering up.” He told her honestly. Liz just smiled at him as she got up and filled a glass with water, placing the solitary rose in it. It would do to help her through the next few days.
