Post by Double Trouble »

mary mary: Well, actually, Tess hasn’t told Maria the truth yet. She and Tony only discussed what the truth might be.

Max does need to be patient and let Liz think on it.

Natalie36: Thanks! Moving in with Max would provide them with a safe place… if things worked out… and if she knew Max better. She and Max really don’t know each other very well just yet, not well enough for her to move in with him.

Earth2Mama: Lol, we’ll find out today.

CandyliciousLovah: Nope, not too shabby at all. ;)

They’ve both built those walls but what they don’t see is that by protecting themselves so religiously, they’re also imprisoning themselves.

begonia9508: Thanks!

You’re right, Liz didn’t refuse simply because the offer was made by Max. While they do have history, they don’t know each other that well. She doesn’t want to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire.

keepsmiling7: Yes! There are no guarantees but Liz just wants a little more than jumping into a new situation on blind faith. She and Max both need to be willing to open up and let the other in if they’re ever going to make any progress.

xilaj: Reliable childcare is a big consideration and Max understands that to a point, but as someone who doesn’t have kids and doesn’t really spend much time around them, Max has things to learn, lol. They’ll talk again though. ;)

We’ll check in on Tess and Maria this week. Isabel’s definitely taking some steps in the right direction. As for the little guys… maybe we’ll catch up with them today too.

Healerfan: Welcome back!

Very true, but Liz hasn’t quite come to that conclusion just yet.

Alien_Friend: Lol, well…

Max and Liz are off in the right direction. A little rocky at the moment, but at least it is a start.

Now that Isabel sees Alex as more than just the nerd king it’s allowed her to open up a bit.

Pretty sure Max is right about Kyle.

secretk: We totally understand! Work and health can interfere with the fun stuff. ;)

Courtney is having a bit of trouble fitting in while Liz and Alex have sort of blended into the group.

She does have a point and she has every right to expect her boyfriend to keep such things private because it’s between him and her.

Kyle is distracted right now. He’s got some pretty big family issues going on at the moment. But Max is right… Tess is on his radar.

Liz is in a difficult position. She’s trying to do what is best for Aaron, and she knows staying with Trent isn’t the answer. But she’s trapped at the moment. Yes, the option that Max has provided is there, but when it all comes down to it, he and Liz don’t really know each other well enough to live together so she knows that could just end up causing more problems than it solves. The two of them have to really open up and listen to each other before they make that kind of move.

Isabel and Alex have definitely made some progress. Now, if he could just get her to see that Richard is more than just a nuisance… he’s a threat. Well, one thing at a time, lol. Isabel is really seeing him as a person now and she wants to do something to help him. They’re both getting a chance to see each other in a different light and it’s making a difference.

Rodney: Liz is frustrating at this point, but she just wants to be sure that she doesn’t take Aaron out of one bad situation and put him right into another one.

Courtney has a right to be excited about getting the cover. And you’re right, Michael does need to understand and respect her wishes.

Part 61

New and Old Friendships

“Expecting someone else, huh?” Tess asked quietly.

She wasn’t ready to deal with this situation. “What do you want, Tess?”

“I saw your face when Courtney spilled the oh-so-fantastic news… I know you wanted that cover.”

She shrugged. “It’s not like that’s news.”

“No, but it’s worse that it was her and not somebody else that got it, isn’t it?”

“Do you care, Tess?” she snapped as she whirled around to face her fully.

“Would I be here if I didn’t?”

“I don’t know!”

“Despite your opinion, I don’t get a kick out of it when you feel miserable.”

“Really? ‘Cause it sure felt like that might be the case when you just took off without any warning!”

Tess fumbled with her hair and brushed it out of her face when the wind picked up. “I didn’t leave to hurt you.”

“Then why did you leave? Let’s just get it out once and for all, Tess!” she shouted. “I’m sick of not knowing and I think I deserve the truth!”

“Oh, really? You can’t even see the truth when it’s biting you on the ass.”

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?!” She couldn’t believe Tess was playing games with her right now.

“It means it’s time for you to realize who the hell you really want,” Tess said furiously. “You already knew you wouldn’t get the cover, so why’re you makin’ a big drama out of it now that you know you lost against Courtney?” She paused for one meaningful moment, but not enough for Maria to say anything. “I’ll tell you why. Because you’re bothered over the thought that she’s becoming number one for him and you’ll just be his second choice now.”

Maria was taken aback by the verbal outburst. Okay, yes, she’d known the cover wasn’t hers and she wasn’t thrilled that Courtney had gotten it. Under different circumstances she knew she would’ve been happy for the other girl and it wasn’t even all about the money, she admitted to herself. “You make it sound like I have an interest in him beyond our friendship and that’s ridiculous.”

“You can deny it all you want, Maria, but one day you’re gonna have to face the truth and finally admit that my brother is more than just a friend for you. What’re you gonna do if she stays, huh? If she doesn’t go away after a few weeks like you’re hoping?”

“I’m not hoping anything like that!” she denied.

“You can’t comfort yourself with other men for the rest of your life.”

“I’m not sure how this got turned around on me but whatever’s going on with me and Michael has nothing to do with why you left.”

Maybe not directly, but if Maria wasn’t so stubborn about her feelings she would’ve never started something with Kyle. “If you had pulled your head outta your ass already, it’d be all different now,” Tess shouted in frustration.

“Damn it, Tess, would you just give me a straight answer and stop talking in riddles!”

“Would you finally admit your feelings for Michael?” she countered. Thank God they were already far away from the others, so they wouldn’t hear any of this.

“Michael is my best friend and he has nothing to do with why you left!”

Tess snorted. “You are in so much denial, Maria, and I’m really sick of it. Maybe Courtney’s appearance is just what you need to finally realize a few things. I just hope it’s not too late for you when you do.” Okay, she really had no room to talk to her like this, but it was just a matter of self protection.

“You know what? Either tell me why you left or just go back to the house and leave me the hell alone!”

Tess was silent for a long while as she glanced back at the others, watching them laugh about something. Was it time to tell? Finally?

“Well?” Maria demanded. “I’m waiting. You’re so full of advice for my life... let’s hear what you have to say for yourself.”

Kyle appeared on the beach in the distance, throwing a stick in the opposite direction and Leo ran after it, barking excitedly. Tess’ eyes locked on him, trying to find the courage to tell the other girl the truth, but hesitating because it would mean leaving herself totally vulnerable.

Maria huffed out an irritated breath and started walking again. “Whatever, Tess, don’t tell me if you don’t want to.”

“It’s him,” she said quietly, her voice barely audible.

Somehow, some way, the two words carried over the sound of the ocean and the gulls crying overhead and she slowly turned to follow Tess’s gaze to Kyle. She frowned as she recalled the conversation they’d had when she had confronted Tess about him. “No, you swore he had nothing to do with it.”

Tess swallowed, remembering how she had done everything to make her friend believe she was wrong. It was the biggest lie she had ever made anyone believe and she was still ashamed of it. “I know, I did say that…”

Maria shook her head. “You LIED to me?!” she exclaimed furiously.

“You’d already slept with him, what chance did I have? It was already too late.”

“It wasn’t serious, Tess, and damn it if you’d just been honest with me at the time we wouldn’t have kept hooking up!” She shook her head in disbelief. “I wouldn’t have knowingly hurt you like that!”

“I know you wouldn’t have,” Tess said and wiped away the tears that were starting to fall.

“Then why didn’t you just tell me?” Maria was still mad, but the pieces had just fallen into place. At the time she had confronted Tess she had been suspicious that the other girl was into Kyle but she had put up such a convincing argument that she had finally accepted that she had it wrong.

“Why? Because it was all a mess at the time. If I had told you, you would’ve stopped, Kyle would’ve wondered why, and it would’ve only been a matter of time until the truth came out.”

“He didn’t need to know anything if you didn’t want him to. Kyle wasn’t looking for anything serious at the time and neither was I. He wouldn’t have questioned it if we hadn’t hooked up again.”

Tess shook her head. “You don’t know how it felt to see him looking at you hungrily while I was just the annoying little sister of his best friend.”

“Tess, you aggravate him on purpose! Why would he look at you any differently if you’re intentionally pissing him off and acting like you’re still 16?”

“Doesn’t matter, he doesn’t want me anyway.”

“Sometimes you’ve gotta make a guy see what’s in front of him.” She rolled her eyes. “They’re not always the brightest crayons in the box.”

She snorted. “Sometimes my brother isn’t either.”

Maria let that go. There was no point in continuing to go over it. She studied Tess for several long minutes, wondering how things would’ve been if she hadn’t let Tess convince her that Kyle had nothing to do with her moodiness back when this mess had all started. “I should’ve seen it.”

“You knew it,” the other girl denied. “I just did everything possible to convince you that you were wrong.”

She nodded. “You’re right. I did know. And you should’ve been honest with me.”

“I know, but once the first lie was out I just couldn’t see a way back and it was all a mess.”

She bit her bottom lip. “I guess we were both wrong.”

“Both of us?” Tess asked, confused.

“I should’ve listened to myself because I knew and you should’ve just told the truth.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m sorry too.”

Tess sat down on the sand and looked back at Kyle again. It was finally out and she could feel a heavy weight falling from her shoulders, combined with a mixture of fear that now somehow the truth would come out and everyone in the group would know.

“That why you were hangin’ with Max?”

“Just a stupid idea to make people jealous.” She snorted. “Worked with Parker, but that’s it. We ended it and now we’re just friends.”

Maria nodded. “That’ll be a relief for your brother.”

“Only until he finds out the truth,” Tess said bitterly. God, hopefully he wouldn’t.

“That you’re into Kyle?”

“Yeah, that’d be really awful.”

“Michael might surprise you if anything ever happens with Kyle.”

“Well, maybe one day he’ll surprise you too,” Tess said, looking at her former best friend.

Maria glanced back at the deck, feeling nauseated as she watched Michael and Courtney kissing. “He already has,” she mused more to herself.

“Uh-oh.” Tess tried to get up when she noticed Leo running towards her, but she didn’t have time to get to her feet before the dog barreled into her and started licking her. “Ungh, Leo, stop that.”

“I see you and Leo have become good friends.”

“I don’t know why this dog picked me out of everyone here,” she said and sat up again, wiping her face where Leo had licked it. “Ungh.”

“Leo’s very particular about who he likes.” She smirked when the dog barked for no reason, slinging slobber over Tess’ bare legs.

“Wanna trade?” the other girls asked and looked at her leg, horrified at the sight of dog drool.

“No thanks. I’ll just stay slobber-free over here.”

“He’s kinda developed a preference for you I guess,” Kyle said when he neared the girls, wondering what they were talking about. He had been shocked to see Tess walking after Maria and then he had noticed the yelling. But now they seemed to be quiet and he didn’t know if that was good or bad.

“Yeah, lucky me.” She felt her heart trip over itself when he brushed his hands over her leg again. “Where’d you get Leo anyway?”

“My uncle gave him to me for a birthday,” he said and held the dog by his collar when he started sniffing at Tess’ leg.

“He’s very... inquisitive.”

“With a few people,” Kyle agreed and resisted the urge to brush another trace of dog drool from her leg since Leo had managed to hit her thigh pretty high this time.

She reached up to scratch the dog behind his ears, glancing up at Kyle when her hand accidentally brushed against his.

Maria took the opportunity to leave them alone, deciding to go and check on Cody to see if he was awake yet. It was nearly time for his meds and he needed to eat a little something before he could take them.

“You two okay now?” He glanced between her and Maria, forcing his eyes to stay on her face and away from her legs.

She shrugged. Were they okay? She didn’t think so, but maybe they were better than they had been before this. “Let’s just say we took a step in that direction.”

He nodded and got up again. “Good.”

“How’re you doing, Kyle?” she asked, hoping to keep him from leaving already.

“Doin’ good,” he shrugged, not ready to think about his parents and their mess again. “I think we should head back to the house, someone said something about some snacks a while ago.”

“Snacks, huh? I hope you’re not talking about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.”

“Got somethin’ against them?”

“No, I was just thinking those pizza bites sound a lot better.”

****

Tony leaned back in his chair and patted his stomach. Dinner had been great and dessert had been even better but now he was full and could easily take a nap. He glanced down when he felt someone touch his arm and he smiled at Chase. “What’s up, partner?”

“Izzy says I gotta brush my teef,” he said quietly.

He turned in his seat to face the little boy directly. “Yeah, she probably wants you to do somethin’ else that really sucks too, huh?” He tickled the boy’s tummy and nodded. “Bet she wants you to take a bath.”

“Yeah.” Chase made a face and glanced at his aunt over his shoulder. “She said I gotta.”

“She’s right about that. You don’t wanna be all stinky do you?”

“I don’t stink,” he denied.

“Your mommy wants you to do that stuff, right?” He smirked when Chase dragged the toe of his right shoe across the floor. “Uh-huh, and when you call her to say goodnight she’s gonna ask you if you did that stuff, right?”

Chase’s eyes widened. “How’d you know?”

“’Cause I’ve got a mom too and she used to ask me questions like that.” He tapped the little boy’s chin. “Tell ya what. You do what your aunt wants you to do and when it’s time for bed I’ll read you a story.”

“Can I pick the story out?”

“Sure, your choice.”

He smiled brightly. “Okay. I gotta talk to Mommy ‘fore I go to bed though.”

“That’s alright.” He nodded when Isabel mouthed a ‘thank you’ at him before leaving the room with her nephew. He glanced across the room where Maria was drying her hands after helping out with the dishes and he got up and stretched. “Hey, Liz?”

She looked up from the last of the dishes she was washing. “What’s up, Tony?”

“I was thinkin’ about takin’ a walk on the beach, walk off some of that food and I thought I’d see if the boys wanted to go with. You mind?”

She thought about it for a moment but finally decided it would be alright since Tony was a fireman and he had first aid training. “No, that’s fine.”

“Cool.” He glanced at Maria. She had been too quiet all evening and for the first time since he had become a part of this group Guerin had been too busy to notice it. “Hey, you up for a walk on the beach?”

“Yeah, why not,” she agreed and smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes.

“Cool, I’ll get the boys and we’ll wait for you on the beach.” He left the kitchen and rounded up Cody and Aaron, herding them outside and down to the beach.

Maria walked back into her bedroom and got rid of the dress she had been wearing for dinner, slipping in her favorite pair of jean shorts and a black tank top before she went down to the beach, her bare feet sinking into the sand.

Tony was kneeling on the sand, crouched over a small turtle he and the boys had found. He picked it up and it pulled its head back into its shell.

“How come it did that, Tony?” Cody asked curiously.

Aaron reached out to touch the turtle with his forefinger and jerked it back as soon as he felt the shell.

“It’s a defense mechanism.” He gently tapped his knuckles against the shell. “See, his shell protects him from predators.”

“What’d you find?” Maria asked when she neared them.

“It’s a turtle, M’ria,” Cody whispered loudly.

“I think it’s scared,” Aaron said as he touched the shell again.

“It is. We look like giants to it.”

The boys looked back at the little turtle, their matching expressions amazed.

“Maybe we should put him over in the grass, huh?” Tony suggested. “If he stays over here he might not get far enough back before the tide rolls in.”

“Can I?” Cody asked, his expression filled with amazement.

“Sure.” Tony held the turtle in front of Cody, showing him how to hold it. “Here, put your hands on his sides ‘cause sometimes they’ll bite.”

“Be careful,” Chase whispered and crawled up in the sand next to Cody.

“I am.” Cody turned the turtle over to look at its face where it was hiding in its shell. “He’s cool.”

Maria smiled at Tony when the boys took the animal over to the grass. “Keep going like that and he won’t ever let you away again.”

He grinned. “Just wait’ll I show him that seahorse skeleton. That’ll seal the deal right there.”

She snorted. “You won’t get rid of him after that.”

“It’s good to see you smile again. You’ve been kinda, I don’t know, distant today. Anything you wanna talk about?”

“It’s been just a day with some weird information,” Maria shrugged. “I’m okay.”

He nodded, not pushing it. “Does Cody have any pets at home?”

“No. He’d like to, but my mom’s already really busy and they spend a lot of days in the hospital, so a pet would just be one more responsibility and they just don’t have the time.”

“That’s a shame. He’s really got a thing for dolphins and sharks, doesn’t he?”

“Thanks to Michael, yes.”

“For such a little guy he sure knows a lot about ‘em.”

“Yeah, he’s got a lot of books about them and whenever he’s in the hospital he takes them with him and then Michael has to read them to him any time he gets the chance to. I think Cody knows much more about sharks than all of us together.”

He wondered just how adversely Michael’s new relationship with Courtney was going to affect Maria and her family. “Has Cody ever been close enough to touch a dolphin?”

“No, never.”

“You know, there’re facilities that have programs that allow people to swim with dolphins.”

“I know, but it’s pretty expensive.”

“Depends on who you know. I didn’t wanna say anything to him earlier but I was browsing online earlier this afternoon, doing some research on heart conditions and flights... can he fly with his condition?”

She looked at him, wondering why he would ask all these questions and why he cared about the little guy so much. They had only had met yesterday but he was already considering taking Cody to see dolphins? “He’s allowed to fly generally. Depends on the day and all.”

“I’ve got a friend who works at a facility in Florida and they have that kinda program there. I’d be happy to put a call in to him. He works with kids with a lot of different health conditions so I think Cody would be comfortable with him.”

“He’d love that, I think,” Maria said, her voice thick while her eyes shimmered with tears. Gosh, she was such a cry baby lately. Must be the stress, she thought bitterly and tried to get herself under control again.

“That’d be fun.” He rested his hand on her back, rubbing it lightly. “I can imagine how difficult it is on you, always putting on a brave face for him. Might do you some good to swim with the dolphins too... my buddy says it’s an experience that’s very therapeutic.”

“It’ll help me if it makes Cody happy.”

He smiled. “You don’t ask for much do you?”

She smirked just slightly. “Let’s just say I’ve learned not to expect too much in life.”

“That does cut down on the disappointments but it also cuts down on other opportunities. Tell ya what, if it’s cool with your mom and with Cody’s doc, and of course, when you can get a few days off, we’ll head down there for a weekend.”

“Okay,” she agreed quietly.

“C’mon,” he said as he draped his arm around her shoulders and tugged her up against his side. “Let’s take these little guys further down the beach before they decide that turtle needs a home with them.”

“My mom would just love that,” she said and called for the boys.

The boys were stretched out on their stomachs, chins resting in their hands as they watched the turtle slowly make its way into the higher grass. Cody looked at Aaron as they got up. “Did you know there are really big turtles?” he asked as he held his arms outstretched. “They’re big like this.”

Aaron’s eyes widened. “Really?”

Cody nodded. “Yep, there’s two at the ‘quarium Mike takes me to an’ you can pet ‘em too. Oh, and Mike’s daddy has big fishes in the pond at their house an’ I get to feed them.”

“C’mon you two,” Maria caught her little brother in her arms and whirled him around.

Cody laughed and smiled up at his sister. “This’s fun, Maria!”

“Man, you get heavier every day,” she teased.

“It’s ‘cause I’m getting bigger!”

“Yes, you are,” she rested him against her side comfortably and kissed his cheek.

He looped his arms around her neck loosely and laid his head on her shoulder. “How come Mike’s always with that girl?” he asked after a few minutes.

Maria shot a quick look at Tony, checking to see if he had heard her brother’s question and of course he had. “Well, Courtney is his new girlfriend, I guess. He likes her.” God, it felt so weird to say that about him.

“Is that why he kisses her all the time?” He made a face.

“Um-hmm,” she nodded and smiled at her friend slightly when he picked Aaron up and settled him on his shoulders.

“How come you don’t kiss Kyle no more?” he asked, lifting his head up so he could look at her.

Why did kids always come up with so many uncomfortable questions, she wondered. “Kyle and I decided to just be friends, sweetie.”

Tony chuckled and glanced up when Aaron leaned to the side to look at him.

“What’s so funny, Tony?”

“I was just thinkin’ about that sand castle that Max was workin’ on earlier.”

“Leo messed it all up when he runned over it. Max makes good castles though.”

“Max is the best at sand castles,” Maria agreed.

“He had a bridge an’ water around the castle an’ everything.”

The little guy was really fascinated with Max, she noticed. It seemed like big old gruff Evans had a loveable side when it came to children. “That’s cool, huh?”

“Uh-huh. He’s really nice an’ he likes me an’ Lizzie. He makes good macaroni an’ cheese too. It’s the kind his mommy makes but he makes it really good.”

Tony and Maria exchanged a surprised look at the things Aaron knew about their friend. Seemed like Max had already gotten really close to the boy.

“Are you gonna kiss my sister, Tony?” Cody asked suddenly, still wondering about the situation.

Tony smiled. “You’re an inquisitive little fella, aren’t you? Your sister and me, we’re just friends,” he said. He had a feeling nothing was going to develop with Maria so he didn’t want to confuse the little boy.

Cody bit his bottom lip and thought about it. “How come you don’t have a boyfriend, M’ria?”

“There just isn’t anyone I’m really interested in right now.”

“Therefore she has a lot of friends,” Tony said, bumping her side slightly.

“Me too,” Cody said, laughing when he and Aaron knocked their fists together.

“Someone’s tired,” Maria said when her brother yawned widely after they had walked a while in silence.

“Do you get bedtime stories?” Aaron asked as he looked at his new friend.

“Yes, I have a cool new book.”

“Max don’t got no kids books but he readed to me about a spaceship an’ some alien people.”

“Should we head back?” Tony glanced at Maria. He had hoped she would share a bit more about what was bothering her so much, but either she wasn’t ready or she just didn’t want to talk in front of her brother.

“Yeah, little man’s gonna weigh a ton if he falls asleep.”

“Want me to take them both?”

“Are you sure?” she asked when Cody nodded.

“Yeah, I’m stronger than I look,” he teased.

“I know that,” she said, elbowing him. She turned and handed Cody over to him, rolling her shoulder to stretch it a bit. “Thanks.”

“You okay up there?” Tony squeezed Aaron’s leg while he settled a half-asleep Cody safely against his side.

“Uh-huh. Is Chase gonna be sad ‘cause he didn’t get to come with us?”

“Nah,” Maria denied. “Why don’t you guys share a room tonight again, huh? The bed’s big enough for all three of you.”

“Okay. Will Lizzie be sad if she’s alone? ‘Cause she always stays with me while I sleep.” His eyes widened. “Can I ask Max to stay with her so she won’t be all alone? Is that okay?”

Maria and Tony both had to grin widely at the boy’s question. “You can try.”

He started to smile but it was interrupted by a yawn. “’kay.”

Post by Double Trouble »

CandyliciousLovah: Having friends around is going to be very important for Maria in the coming months. Baby steps for sure for Maria and Tess. They’ll probably be back and forth for a while.

Natalie36: Yes, they are!

Earth2Mama: Lol, not so sure Liz will appreciate the sentiment.

And Aaron’s at the front of the line.

sarammlover: Finally got that talk out of the way. Thanks, we love Tony too! Aaron won’t have too much convincing to do with Max… his real hurdle is Liz, lol. But he’ll do his best to get the two of them on the right track.

mary mary: It’s so true… we only complicate things as we get older. More coming right up!

keepsmiling7: Thanks!

Turtles are fascinating creatures to little guys.

Aaron’s gonna do his best to make sure his solution sticks.

Cardinal: Slowly but surely, lol.

Getting that off of her chest is sure to help.

This is definitely going to push Maria to question some things about her relationship with Michael.

You’re right on track with Liz! While there are some issues with Max, so much of her reluctance isn’t about him. These two do have some serious work ahead of them, but once they get on the same page we’ll see them really begin to make some progress.

Alien_Friend: Lol, you can count on Aaron! The little guys are gonna be great friends. Tony’s gonna be a great ally as Michael pursues his relationship with Courtney.

Finally having the truth out will help Maria and Tess. Maria is facing a reality where she isn’t Michael’s priority… a tough pill to swallow. Cody will have questions for Michael. We’ll have to wait to see what it takes for Michael to realize what’s right in front of him.

begonia9508: Thanks!

We do have plenty of complications here, lol!

Maria’s approaching the moment when she realizes that she’s been lying to herself for quite a while now.

The little guys really are the ones who have had the most fun this weekend.

Drogyn: We’re glad to hear you’re enjoying TIC TAC! Lol, true, but Courtney isn’t a bad person here.

It was way past time for the girls to get that out of the way. Maria… yeah, she’s starting to open her eyes.

roswellian love: We’re glad you’re loving TIC TAC!

Richard could very likely turn violent.

For a couple of Candies, that’s a very high compliment. Thanks!

We will eventually see Ava come into the group a little bit more. Liz will get to a point where she and Aaron are out of that situation. We all want to strangle Michael and Maria right now, lol. Tony’s a great guy and he will find the one before the end of the fic. Another vote for Amy and Jim, lol. The Kyle and Maria thing was a big strange, but at least we’re past that now, lol. Michael… so true. ;)

secretk: Yep, it’s gonna take time for the girls to find their balance with each other.

The little guys are great. Tony’s gonna be important to Maria in the coming months.

Eva: Hey girl, how is it going? We hope your kiddies are all doing good! :)

We’ll bring it on! Now… ;)

Part 62

Schizo

Isabel nudged Kyle when she noticed the couple walking up to the back deck. He looked up from the graphic novel he was reading and tipped it forward to rest on his stomach as he watched them with interest. Tony set Cody on his feet and he made his way up to Michael, grabbing his hand and tugging on it insistently while ignoring the woman sitting in his lap.

“C’mon, Mike, I gotta go to bed now.”

“Alright, little man, I’m comin’.”

Cody made the rounds, saying his goodnights to everyone before moving over to the door to wait for Michael. He leaned the side of his head against the doorframe when the man started speaking to that girl quietly. “Mike,” he called impatiently.

“Aren’t you gonna say g’night to Courtney?” Michael asked.

The little boy made a face and turned to look the other way. “No.”

“Don’t take it personally. Little kids can be bratty until they accept you,” he assured his girlfriend.

Aaron smiled sleepily at Liz when she took him from Tony and he settled against her with his little arms wrapped around her neck. “Can I sleep wif Cody an’ Chase?”

Liz glanced at Maria for approval before answering. “Sure, I think that’d be okay.”

“I don’t want you to be all ‘lone though, so Max can stay wif you.”

She almost choked and quickly checked to see if Max had heard it. Of course he had, she thought with an inner eye roll when he gave her a cheeky smirk and a wink. Ass! “Don’t worry about me, sweetie, I’m good.”

Aaron looked up when Max joined them. “I’ll look after her, buddy.”

The boy smiled in satisfaction and nodded. “Tan he read a story to us?”

“I think Michael’s already planning do that, Aaron,” Liz said before Max could agree. It was bad enough that her little brother was so attached to Max, so it wasn’t necessary to let them spend even more time together – she wouldn’t hear the end of it when they were back home.

Max bit his lip before he could grumble something rude and he ruffled the boy’s hair. “Good night, buddy. See ya in the morning.”

Aaron shifted around until Liz had no choice but to let him hug the man or drop him. “G’night, Max,” he whispered.

He knew it was only going to further aggravate her when he shot a triumphant grin at her over Aaron’s shoulder.

“C’mon, sweetie, we need to get you ready for bed.” Liz tried to contain her irritation with Max as her brother reluctantly released him and settled against her once more.

“Catch ya later, Liz,” Max murmured.

Isabel stretched her leg out and kicked him once Liz had gone inside. “Okay, what is going on with you two?”

He dropped his gaze to stare at her for a moment as his face settled into a disinterested expression. “I have no idea what you’re talkin’ about,” he said as he sauntered back over to his chair and sat down.

“Means Maxie Max doesn’t wanna talk about it,” Maria translated with a slight smirk.

“Hey,” he complained and grabbed her hand, pulling her down into his lap. “Stop that.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she mimicked his previous sentence, knowing he meant the nickname she had used – he just hated it and for some reason she was the only one who got away with it.

Max snorted and released her again. “Just wait, DeLuca, one day… Payback’s a bitch.”

“I’m shaking with fear,” she laughed and crouched down to hug her brother, who was still waiting for Michael. “You want me to come with you?”

Cody glanced up and sighed happily when Michael finally approached them. “No, M’ria, I’m good. You can stay wif Tony.”

The other man overheard the little boy’s comment and he laughed while he leaned forward in his seat to bump his fist against Cody’s. “I’ll watch her for you.”

Maria just snorted and got up again when Michael picked her brother up just as Chase ran outside and hung onto his uncle’s left leg. “Watch me, huh?”

“It’s a dirty job, RP, but someone’s gotta do it.”

She gave Michael a dirty look and waited patiently while he walked past her with a superior smirk. As soon as his back was to her she grabbed the back of his jeans and fisted the waistband of his boxers, giving them a good, hard yank.

Michael cursed under his breath and forced a smile when Cody placed his hand over his mouth. “Sorry, buddy,” he mumbled. He turned from the waist to look at Maria and his dark eyes glittered dangerously. “You know you’re gonna pay for that.”

Maria laughed when he started walking inside, his gait… cautious. “Um-hmm, and I’ll start worrying about that just as soon as you can walk normal again, CB.”

Courtney watched the two of them with interest. They were so close that sometimes it wasn’t even funny. She knew there was no way she could say anything against a friendship between them since the two of them had known each other for a lot longer than she had known him, but maybe she could convince him to avoid all the touching.

“Worried?” Kyle asked when he noticed the direction of her gaze.

“Should I be?” she countered.

“Can’t hurt to keep your eyes open I guess,” he said with a shrug. It wasn’t that he couldn’t stand her. Actually he thought she was pretty okay, but if he had any say in it, then the only girl who belonged with his best friend was Maria, no matter what. “Hey, Leo, stop that,” he said when the dog tried to get the crackers from the table, and went on before the girl could say something else.

“Maybe you should feed him,” Tess interrupted them as she sat down across from Kyle.

Courtney wasn’t exactly happy with the answer she had been given. She had been hoping he would say something that would reassure her there was no reason to be concerned about Michael’s friendship with Maria.

“He already ate,” Kyle said as he leaned forward to ruffle the dog’s fur affectionately. “Now he’s just bein’ greedy.”

Tess glanced back and forth between Kyle and Courtney, suddenly feeling like she had interrupted something. Whatever it was she had no interest in getting involved. She glanced at Leo as she got to her feet. “C’mon, Leo, I’m sure there’s a box of dog biscuits or somethin’ in the kitchen.”

“Don’t feed him too much,” Kyle warned. The dog had the tendency to eat and eat and eat and at some point it was just too much. Ungh, no fun!

****

Michael rolled his eyes slightly as all three boys talked at the same time while they crawled into bed and it was impossible to understand anything they were saying. “You sure you wanna do this alone?” Liz asked, amused when she saw his face. “Three boys can be a handful.”

“Nah,” he waved her off. “Go and enjoy your time. I can handle them and they’ll settle down in no time.”

“You sure?” She snorted a bit.

He grinned. “I’m sure, Liz. I know how to handle the gremlins.”

“Okay,” she said slowly and backed out of the room after saying goodnight to the boys.

“Alright, you guys, let’s get settled down so I can read your bedtime story.” He stretched out across the middle of the bed with the storybook and he was opening the front cover when Chase crawled over to lean against his stomach.

“Uncle Mike?”

“What’s up, Chase?”

“When’s that girl goin’ home?”

“Yeah,” Cody added before he could answer. “’Cause Maria’s been sad an’ you don’t care. You’re always with that girl ‘stead of us.”

Aaron was watching them as the conversation bounced back and forth, trying to understand what was going on. “Don’t you like M’ria no more, Mike?” he asked quietly. “I think she’s nice.”

“Of course I still like Maria, she’s my best friend,” he looked at all three boys to show them he was being straight with them. “And I do care if she’s sad, Cody.”

The little boy crossed his arms over his chest and shook his head without looking at him. “How come Tony was with her all day an’ you was with that girl?”

“Because Courtney’s my girlfriend and she’s new here. If I leave her alone all day than she’ll be sad too. Do you want that?”

Cody shifted his feet under the covers as he considered what Michael was saying. “Don’t she got no friends?”

“She’s new to New York and has to make some first.” He ruffled the boy’s hair. “You could be her friend too, she’s really cool.”

“What story are you gonna read?” he asked, not wanting to talk about that stupid girl anymore.

Michael sighed and placed the book aside, reaching over to cradle the little boy against him. “Hey, your sister will always be my best friend, Cody. I love her, just not like
boyfriend/girlfriend, do you understand that?”

Cody didn’t understand it. Michael and Maria were always together. “I wanna read the story now, Mike.”

“Alright,” the man agreed, although he wasn’t satisfied with how the boys had reacted to Courtney. Maybe it was just a matter of time, he thought and opened the book.

He finally relaxed against Michael when the man started to read the story but his mind was far away. Michael always had the answers to his questions but this time what he was saying didn’t make sense.

****

“Think you could to that?” Alex frowned and looked down at his lower arm.

“Sure, I can try out a few designs and then show them to you,” Max nodded and leaned back again, taking a sip of his beer.

“You want a tattoo?” Isabel asked in surprise when she passed the guys and accidently overheard a bit of their conservation. Somehow Alex didn’t seem to be a guy who would get a tattoo, but then again he had already surprised her a few times now.

“Maybe,” he shrugged and grabbed his drink.

“Well, okay…” she said and walked across the deck to join her sister. It was really weird that Alex had picked Max out of all the people of this group to get along with the most, but somehow she was starting to get used to weird stuff lately. “So, what’d you and Maria fight about down on the beach earlier?” she asked Tess quietly so no one would overhear.

“As if you don’t know,” the other girl rolled her eyes.

“Hey, Valenti,” someone called and interrupted their conversation.

Kyle sat up from his lazy sprawl in one of the deck chairs and glanced over the railing, recognizing two of the guys as neighbors. “Hey, what’s up?”

“We’ve got a little party going on at my place. Wanna come?”

He glanced around the deck to make eye contact with his friends. “Anyone interested?” Actually a party sounded good and maybe it’d help to finally get rid of the thoughts in his head.

Max and Alex shock their heads immediately. “Iz?”

Of course he would ignore me, Tess thought, annoyed when his gaze moved over her without stopping.

“No, guess not.” The guys were okay, but she had been to those parties and they were pretty… basic. Sucky music, bad drinks, drunk guys who wanted to have sex.

Maria recognized the disappointed look on the youngest girl’s face when Kyle practically ignored her, but she tried to not feel bad about it. Somehow it was her own fault, wasn’t it?

“What about you, Carter?”

Tony looked down at the blonde who was leaning against his side. “Would you mind?”

Maria snorted. “Thought you weren’t looking for anything serious?” She laughed when his expression turned puzzled. “You don’t have to ask for permission, T-man. Especially not mine.”

He grinned and they both got up from their seats.

“What about you, Sexy?” one of the guys asked when he stepped up on the deck, his question directed at Maria.

She knew him from several parties and shook his head at him with a smile. “No chance, Pete.”

He held his hand over his chest. “And again she breaks my heart. Did you see that?”

“Shut up,” Kyle snorted and shoved the guy slightly.

“What about Guerin?”

“He’s still inside,” Tony thought aloud.

“And so’s his girlfriend,” Isabel stated. “Guess they’re busy.”

Maria shuddered. “Thanks for that picture, Iz.”

“Guess that means it’s just us,” Kyle looked at Tony. “We won’t stay there long,” he told the others. “Oh, hey, Tess, would ya keep an eye on Leo since he somehow seems to like you?”

“Sure,” she grumbled. He wouldn’t ask her to come to the party, but she was good enough to watch the big baby, she thought, annoyed.

Leo sat down beside Tess and placed his muzzle on her thigh, thumping his tail happily.

“Great, you’re just who I wanted to spend my weekend with,” she hissed, but scratched behind his ears when he nudged her hand.

“Tell Michael to come over when he ever comes back out,” Kyle said as they walked down to the beach.

“What am I, his secretary?” She looked down at the dog. “You aren’t helping at all.”

Max smirked at her annoyed ramblings. “I don’t think you can blame it on the dog.”

“Neither can she blame it on Kyle,” Maria said, glaring at the girl. Now that she had thought about it for a while her sympathy was fading again. She was sure that her leaving the group without a reason was also part of the reason why Kyle ignored her.

“Bite me,” she snapped, returning the glare. She wasn’t going to sit there and take the snide comments after she had finally told Maria the truth.

Okay, Isabel thought, guess that means she had told her the truth. Finally!

Max looked at the girls, puzzled. “Does Maria know the truth?” he hissed to the tallest blond.

“And you have that figured out all on your own, Max. I am so proud,” Isabel teased.

He snorted and flipped her off. “You’re lucky you’re my friend,” he muttered.

Alex glanced back and forth at the rest of them, unsure what was the matter, but then again… he wasn’t really interested in learning more complications about them.

Max caught Alex watching them, trying to figure out what was going on and he waved his hand dismissively. “You’re not missin’ anything.”

“I figured as much.” He leaned back in his chair. “Probably takes some getting used to.”

“Yeah. Some days I’m not even sure what’s goin’ on with them.”

Maria glanced at the doors that lead into the house, wondering if Michael would come out again. Now that Kyle and Tony were gone she didn’t know how to distract herself from too many thoughts about the newest Tess situation and other stuff. She was pretty sure Max would be all over Liz again as soon as the girl came back from her shower.

Isabel slid down in her chair and stretched her legs out, closing her eyes and enjoying the silence. She frowned slightly when she heard a car pulling up outside and a moment later she heard a car door slam shut. “Are we expecting anyone?” she asked without opening her eyes.

“I don’t know, are we?” Maria asked puzzled and tried to peer around the house but didn’t see anything.

“I’m not,” Max said. “Maybe it’s just someone going to the party who got the wrong address.”

“Probably,” she nodded. “Go tell ‘em.”

“Me?” Before he could get another word out she shot a glance at him and he huffed in aggravation as he pushed himself to his feet. “You do know you’re capable of tellin’ ‘em to get lost too, right?”

“Yeah, but if it is guys they wouldn’t leave after I opened the door,” she teased and winked at him to make sure he wasn’t taking her serious.

“Uh-huh, alright, for you I’ll make the sacrifice.”

Tess rolled her eyes at him after his last sentence. Please, we have enough Maria-worshippers here, she thought bitterly.

Max ambled through the house to the front door, unlocking it and pulling it open. He could see a man standing next to a car he didn’t recognize and he stepped outside to walk down the driveway. “Hey, man, if you’re lookin’ for the party it’s a couple houses down.”

Trent looked up from the map he was holding, frowning when he recognized the voice. “YOU?!”

His first thought was that the guy was stalking Liz. “What the fuck are you doin’ here?”

“The question is: What the fuck are YOU doin’ here?”

“You’re followin’ Liz now? Don’t you think that comes across as a bit desperate?”

Was the world really that small? the other man thought in annoyance while his brain was still trying to make sense of the situation. “Looks like the ink’s getting to your brain again.”

“I’m not the one following a woman around who couldn’t care less about me.” Well, okay, he was kinda following her around but he was sure she had feelings for him outside of the hostility she exhibited on a regular basis.

“I don’t give a fuck about her and I sure as hell don’t follow her and that little runt around,” he closed the car door and came up the driveway. “But seems like she might be following you… For whatever reason.”

Max snorted. Liz, following him? If only! “If you don’t care what’s it matter to you if her and the kid are with me?”

“Who said I’d care?”

“You’re the one who brought up her followin’ me,” Max countered.

“As long as you stay away from my apartment you can do whatever ya want with her,” Trent shrugged carelessly. “Wait, you’re not paying her, are you? You know, for…”

Max rushed Trent, barely aware of someone shouting his name until Isabel pushed between them, her hands against his chest shoving him back away from the other guy. “Isabel, get outta the way. This has nothin’ to do with you.”

“Stop it,” she told him firmly and glanced over his shoulder to where Maria was standing in the doorway. “Get Michael.”

“Listen to the woman, ink-head,” Trent taunted. “You know what’s good for you you’ll back off.”

Max nearly succeeded in freeing himself from Isabel’s hold when she suddenly shifted, blocking him again.

Tess walked around the house from the deck to see what was going on. When she saw Maria running back into the house to get Michael, she reacted quickly and ran down to the beach, dragging Leo behind her to reach the house where the party was.

She got there a little breathless and was glad that Kyle and Tony were still standing on the deck and not in the house, talking to a few people. “K….Kyle,” she called.

His head snapped to the side and he frowned at her, wondering what she was doing there. “What?”

She tried to catch her breath and almost dropped Leo’s leash when she bent forward to rest her hands on her thighs. “Max…”

“Max what?”

“Maybe we’d better go check it out, man,” Tony suggested. “Could be serious.”

“There’s a guy,” she pressed out and coughed once. “An’ Max is about to beat him up.”

Kyle glanced at Tony as he set his beer on the wide railing that bordered the deck. “I’d say that counts as serious.”

“Let’s go,” the other man nodded and they started to run down the steps to the beach.

Tess rolled her eyes when they took off but before she could get a single complaint out Leo took off after Kyle, jerking her arm and pulling her, leaving her no choice but to run with him or take a nosedive in the sand.

“Max, calm down,” Isabel said, trying to keep the men from throwing punches at each other. Who the hell was this guy?

“Yeah, better listen to the chick,” Trent agreed.

“Chick?” she echoed, considering just moving out of the way and letting Max beat the crap out of this guy.

“Isabel, get outta the way,” Max said. “This’s between me an’ Asshole.”

“Shouldn’t it be Liz holding you up here?” Trent pushed. “Or she already call it quits again? Woman doesn’t know what she wants.”

“Like you have any idea what she wants! You treat her and Aaron like they’re nothin’.”

“I’ve got news for you, dickhead, they ARE nothing to me.”

Max snorted. “Not like that’s a newsflash, asshole.”

What was taking so long to get Michael? Isabel wondered. She could practically feel Max’s blood boiling.

Trent smirked, knowing it was pissing the other guy off that he was standing there and he couldn’t do a damn thing about it.

“Move your ugly ass outta the driveway,” Max warned when the guy stood there grinning like a fool.

“Or what? You gonna kick my ass?”

“I could do a lot worse than kick your ass.” He could get to Trent but with Isabel between them it was too dangerous.

“I’m shaking,” the other man snorted.

“I get my hands on you and you won’t be breathin’,” Max bit out.

“What you say and what you do are obviously two different things,” Trent shrugged and stepped around Isabel, ready to go into the house.

“Excuse me,” Isabel said, moving to intercept the man. “I don’t know who you are, but what I’ve seen and heard so far doesn’t make you someone welcome here.”

“I was invited, believe it or not.” His gaze moved over her. “And I can be pretty nice with the right people around.”

“Gross,” she muttered. “No one I know would’ve invited someone like you.”

“Don’t be too sure about that,” he looked at Max when he finally managed to push the woman aside to come face to face with him again.

“Name one person who would’ve invited your sorry ass to come out here.” Max shook his head. “No one here outside of Liz, Aaron, and me knows you... and none of us wanted you around.”

“Don’t breathe in my face,” Trent grumbled and pushed Max away from him to get more space.

That was all Max needed. Isabel was out of the line of fire and Asshole had just made the first move. He grabbed the guy’s hand and twisted it painfully as he shoved him away and released him. He didn’t give Trent enough time to come back at him before he curled his hand into a fist and swung hard.

“Max!” Isabel shrieked but stayed where she was. “Stop!”

He ignored her and jerked back, ducking to avoid Trent’s fist. Before Trent had time to catch himself Max caught his fist, twisted the arm behind his back and pinned him to the ground. He pressed his knee into the center of Trent’s back, using his weight to hold him down. “C’mon, asshole, I thought you were gonna give me a beatin’?”

Trent just turned his head slightly, as much as his position allowed, and smirked when he felt the small trail of blood running over his forehead. “You’ll get your punishment soon enough, asshat.”

Max was about to jerk him around, when people ran out of the house. “Oh my God, what’re you doin’?” someone shrieked and he recognized Liz’ voice over the sound of the blood rushing in his ears.

“Evans, fuck,” Michael ran towards the two men on the ground and grabbed his friend tightly. “Get the hell away from him.”

“What’re you doin’?” Max asked when Michael held him back while Tony helped the guy to his feet.

“What the fuck are you doin’?” he snapped back.

“Why’re you here?” Liz asked, facing Trent. “You don’t even want us so why the hell did you come here?”

“Wait a minute... how do you guys know each other?” Michael asked, looking between them.

Liz looked at her newest friend, puzzled. “Do you know him?”

“Yeah, we work together sometimes.” He shook his head. “How do you know him?”

“Prez?” Kyle came on the scene finally after locking Leo in the house. “What’s going on here?”

“Just about to find that out,” Michael said, glancing between Evans and Kennedy.

Part 63

Post by Double Trouble »

CandyliciousLovah: Oh, it’s gonna take more than a hint. The little guys aren’t finished trying to change Michael’s mind about Courtney.

Cardinal: You, of course, are correct about Trent not identifying himself and also about him not being in his jurisdiction. Although Trent was baiting Max he didn’t make physical contact with him.

Trent had his life the way he wanted it and Aaron threw one hell of a monkey wrench into his plans.

Unfortunately, he doesn’t see raising Aaron and being that surrogate dad as anything heroic, just a burden he isn’t interested in dealing with. Had he been willing to do that, it would’ve made all the difference in the world.

Earth2Mama: You just never know what might come out. Yeah, it’s hard to believe that any of them would hang out with Trent after this.

Chances are, you’re right about that.

Ouch, lol, that would’ve been painful.

mary mary: Well, lol, Trent and Liz don’t live in a dump like Maria and Courtney do.

Nah, Aaron isn’t going to have his weekend screwed up. The little guy still has some fun time left.

We’re positive you’re right. ;)

keepsmiling7: Yep, that’d be enough to ruin things.

Aaron’s such a lovable little guy.

Alien_Friend: Lol, really? Trent’s presence alone would be enough to send Max into a rage, but luckily the others are there to keep things from getting out of hand.

The boys will let their disapproval continue to be known.

Maria’s getting to the place where she’s trying to let it go. The two of them will have their ups and downs, but they’ll get there.

Aaron’s determined to make Max a permanent part of his and Liz’s life.

itsme69: Lol, updating now!

xilaj: Nah, not too long. We’re updating TIC TAC weekly and alternating the other two fics. You’re right about Trent.

Poor little Aaron. That’s an ugly situation for him and Liz to be in.

Trent is a definite threat and one that isn’t likely to just disappear.

The little guys aren’t finished expressing their opinion of the situation.

Natalie36: Lol, we’d come back sooner if we could.

sarammlover: Lol, Trent so deserved it! The guys aren’t really friends with him, they work together on occasion and hang out once in a while after shifts. And no, Trent’s never mentioned Liz to them. Well, we’ll see how long you have to wait…

Healerfan: Thanks!

Yeah, Max really doesn’t need any encouragement, lol, but that won’t stop Aaron.

Oh, Trent’s been very careful to keep Liz and Aaron in the background.

begonia9508: Lol, Trent has induced quite a few readers to violent thoughts.

Max’s reaction made sense. Oh, Liz knows she needs another solution, she just doesn’t believe she’s found it yet.

roswellian love: Lol, yeah, we like to mix it up. This group has US shaking our heads half the time. ;)

We’ll see what Liz has to say in this update. Well… he wouldn’t just entrust his beloved pet with anyone.

Courtney hasn’t quite figured that one out yet.

Rodney: Exactly!!!

Part 63

Losing Control

“Yeah, go ahead, Asshole, tell them who you are. Tell them you’re an abusive excuse for a human being who likes to mistreat women and terrorize little kids.”

Liz looked at Trent and then at Michael, swallowing hard. “I… I live with him.”

He glanced at Prez and then back at Liz. “What Evans said... is it true?”

She looked at the ground instead of answering because she was too ashamed to actually admit that Trent was exactly what Max had said.

“Did you invite this bastard?” Max looked at Michael and freed himself from his grip.

“It was kinda put out there, yeah. He said he might have some free time this weekend and...” he trailed off and faced Prez. “Man, you’ve never mentioned havin’ anyone at home.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “I obviously don’t know the whole story but I’ve gotten to know Liz and it’s pretty clear that her home life is hell.”

“She’s made my life hell,” Trent gritted out.

“You should just shut the fuck up,” Max growled and went after him again, but was held back by Kyle this time.

“Max! Cut it out!”

“You think you can take me, Trent,” Max asked, his voice low and challenging. “I’m not a woman and I’m not a four-year-old child... try holdin’ your own against me.” He snorted. “Wasn’t workin’ out so great for you a while ago, was it?”

Michael nodded at Kyle and he pushed the other man farther away from the others. “Max, shut up, okay?” he hissed quietly. “You have no idea who you’re talkin’ to.”

Max whirled around to face him. “He gets off on treatin’ them like shit, what more do I need to know about him?” His eyes narrowed. “I’d think you’d be at the front of the line to kick his ass.”

“Yeah, maybe if he wasn’t a cop,” Kyle shot back.

“Man, I don’t care if he’s a cop or the president. If he’s gonna treat them like that he’d better stand up and take his punishment like a man.”

“You should leave, Kennedy,” Michael said, his tone cold. He had kind of been invited, yes, but that was before he knew what kind of man he was at home.

Trent just nodded as he met Max’s icy stare. “This isn’t over. You just assaulted a police officer.” His lips turned up in a slow grin. “Hope you’ve got a good lawyer.”

“Don’t,” Kyle warned when Max was about to go after him again.

They waited until Trent got into his car and pulled out of the driveway before anyone spoke up again. “Fuck,” Michael muttered and ran his hands through his hair before he looked at his friend. “That wasn’t a smart move, Max. No, he doesn’t have a legal leg to stand on so it’s not like he can have you arrested or press charges against you for assaulting a police officer, but he could still cause problems for you.”

“I don’t care. He was askin’ for it. You have no idea the kinda hell he’s put them through.” He glanced at Liz, wanting to go to her but feeling like she would push him away if he did.

The other man just nodded, knowing that he would’ve reacted the same way if anyone had been threatening Maria like that. Or Courtney. “Let’s go back inside.”

Max shook his head, still watching Liz. “I’m just gonna sit out here for a while, clear my head.”

Liz looked at him, knowing that the fact about Trent being a cop bothered him more than he would admit. She waited while the others went back inside, nodding at Michael when he checked on her before closing the door. She crossed her arms over her chest and watched Max from a safe distance. “You shouldn’t have done that.”

He shrugged and sat down on the top step. “What’s he gonna do? Have me arrested? Press charges? Show everyone he works with what a dick he is? That last one’s about all he’s gonna be able to do.”

“He’ll come up with something, Max. He will retaliate.” At one time she wouldn’t have thought that about him, but since she had decided to assume custody of Aaron his true colors had shone through.

“Let him. Do you think I care what he says about me? You can both testify about the kind of person he is and anyone who sees Aaron around him would know he’s an asshole.”

“Don’t take this so lightly,” she insisted. “Who knows what’ll happen now, Max!”

“I don’t care.” He rubbed his right hand over his goatee. “It explains why he has a gun.”

She frowned. “How did you know he has a gun?”

“The night you let me watch Aaron he told me about it.”

“This’s just all a mess,” she sighed. “Leave it to my luck that Trent knows Michael and Kyle.”

“The world’s never as big as you think it is,” he muttered. “The guy obviously knows how to fool people and the last thing he should be is a cop.”

“Tell me about it,” she leaned against the door frame and looked at him. She couldn’t really be mad at him. He had probably made everything worse, but it wasn’t like he had done it to hurt her.

“You’ve gotta get outta that situation, Liz,” he said quietly. “It’s even more important now.”

“Well, your actions won’t make it any easier for me at home, that’s for sure,” she snorted. To be honest, she was feeling pretty uncomfortable about tomorrow.

“My offer’s still on the table, Liz.” He turned his head towards her but stared past her. “I wish you’d take it. Maybe it’s not the perfect solution but... I think we could make it work if we both made a real effort.”

She didn’t want to discuss this again because he couldn’t see her point of view.

He sighed when her silence was the only answer she gave. “You think he’s gonna be any easier to get along with now?”

“No, Max, of course that’s not what I think,” she told him angrily.

“You got a better offer? Fine, you hate the thought of stayin’ with me but isn’t it better than stayin’ with him?”

“I don’t hate the thought of staying with you, Max,” she denied. “What I hate is the thought of Aaron getting hurt. I know Trent’s no good for him, but that little boy can’t survive another disappointment in his life.”

“I’m sick of you just assuming that I’m gonna be a disappointment.”

“Max…” She sighed. “We’re going in circles here.”

“You can stop that, Liz. Me, I’m gonna keep goin’ in circles until you get outta that situation.”

“You know, you can’t just push people to do something. If you want them to come around maybe you should start with tiny steps.”

He sighed in frustration. “Then tell me what to do!”

“Just what I told you,” she said and opened the door. “If you want US, then you have to take it our pace.”

“What the fuck does that mean? Take it at your pace?” he got up and followed her. “You’re standin’ still! You’re not movin’ at all, not makin’ an effort to meet me halfway or any-damn-thing!”

“I let you watch Aaron, didn’t I,” she said when she whirled around, pointing her finger at him. “I let you touch me,” she hissed so only he could hear it. “Don’t tell me I’m standing still, because I’m fuckin’ moving all the time.”

He took a step back, his back teeth grinding so hard it was starting to make his jaw hurt. “You have no idea how much you piss me off,” he grated out. “But no matter how much you piss me off I’m not givin’ up.”

“No one asked you to,” she told him.

“No one...” Did women even have any idea how confusing they were? “You let me touch you last night and then today you freeze me out. You let me watch Aaron earlier this week and then you do your best to keep him away from me. How the hell am I supposed to figure out what you want?!”

“You’re smart,” she said and pointed after the others. “I’m going now,” her expression turned into a grimace, “they might have some questions…”

He shook his head. Women! They oughta teach a class for guys so they knew how to decipher the secret language women used. Why didn’t they? Oh, that’s right, because they change it so often no guy would ever be able to keep up with it! “They’re not gonna grill you for information, Liz.”

“Um-hmm,” she walked through the kitchen and out onto the deck, forcing a smile at the others.

Michael was the first to speak. “Hey, you okay?”

“Yeah,” she ran her hand through her long dark hair. “I guess…”

“I had no idea the guy was such a dick,” Tony said as he gave her a small smile. “He comes across a lot differently at work.”

“Yeah, we never would’ve mentioned he could come here if we’d known,” Michael agreed.

“So you guys... you share a place?” Kyle asked.

“Yeah,” she walked over to sit on the deck floor, back resting against the railing. “We were together, but that’s been over for a long time.”

“So you... you aren’t together but you’re sharin’ a place?” Tony asked. “God, that’s gotta be uncomfortable.”

“I can’t afford to move out right now,” she looked at Max when he joined them and hoped he wouldn’t suggest again that they move in with him. “I’ve tried, but there just isn’t an apartment close to the university and work. Well, there are, but I could never afford them. Aaron’s babysitter lives in my current building and his doctor isn’t far. Losing her means I don’t have an affordable and reliable babysitter anymore,” she sighed, “and I can’t afford to lose that.”

“You ever thought about getting into a place with a roommate?” Alex asked cautiously.

“Ever tried to find a roommate who can deal with a little kid underfoot?” She smirked a bit.

“No. Ever tried to find one who can deal with a bunch of party animals living downstairs?”

She laughed and looked at Kyle and Michael. “Bet that’s not easy either.”

“Hey, we’re not that bad,” Michael complained.

“No, I think you aren’t,” Liz looked at him. “Thanks for inviting us. It’s nice to be out of that mess for a few days.”

He grinned. “Hey, I’m just glad you agreed. I thought for a while that I was gonna have to plan a kidnapping to get you to come an’ hang out with us.”

“It’s just not easy to get the time off mostly,” she told him. “And it’s not often that kids are invited with a group our age.”

“You’re in luck then ‘cause the little guys tend to be around more often than not.”

“Yeah, blame it on my brother and Ava, who just couldn’t wait to be a mom,” Maria said with a smirk. “We love kids.”

“So, where is this other sister anyway?” Tony asked.

“She couldn’t come,” Michael explained. “Work got in the way.”

“That sucks. Chase seems to be havin’ a good time though. I heard him talkin’ to her on the phone earlier an’ that little guy can talk fast when he’s excited and he’s got somethin’ to say,” he said with a laugh.

“Yeah, just like his mother. Ava is Tess’ twin.”

“Twins, huh? Identical?”

“Generally speaking, yes,” Tess said. “But she has no taste in fashion or hairstyles.”

Isabel snorted at that. “It’s easy enough to tell them apart.”

“She’s different,” Michael shrugged. “Cool in her own way though. Chase’s father left when she got pregnant and she had a lot on her plate, but she’s managed very well.”

“I’m sure the Guerin clan had her back,” Tony said with a knowing smile. “Chase is a good kid. She’s gotta be proud of him.”

“More than she’d admit,” Isabel said. “And Dad’s really proud of her too. He wasn’t so happy about becoming a grandpa so early at first, but that’s a different story now.”

“I’ll bet he keeps her busy.” He shook his head. “Jeez, I don’t know how single moms do it. I mean, there’re a lot of us here and three little guys and I think they pretty much kept everyone busy today.”

“You grow with your terms,” Liz shrugged.

“I s’pose that’s true. Life’s challenges make or break us.” Tony stretched his arms over his head and yawned widely. “I think bein’ by the ocean makes me tired.”

Maria snorted. “Or maybe you’re just lazy.”

“That’s a distinct possibility,” he agreed.

She looked at Max, seeing that his mind was running over what had happened a few minutes ago. He was pretty miserable from what she could tell. As for herself she wasn’t sure if it was the fight or what she had seen before that was bothering her more now.

She had run inside to find Michael, knowing that Isabel wasn’t going to be able to keep the guys outside apart for long. She didn’t know who the other guy was but Max had been ready to take his head off. She had checked the boys’ room first and found the three of them asleep so she had quietly closed the door and hurried down to check his room. She had pushed the door open without thinking and even though she knew Michael was actually attempting a relationship with Courtney she hadn't been ready to see them together like that.

Courtney had been sitting on the desk in the room, only wearing her bra from the waist up, while Michael had stood between her legs, shirtless and with his jeans hanging low on his hips.

They hadn't even been aware of the light from the hallway spilling into the room, both oblivious to the interruption. She had pulled to door closed and rapped her knuckles sharply against the door, all the while telling herself that it didn't matter. It wasn't like it was the first time she had ever caught him making out with some girl.

There was no sign of life after the knock and she had called him name. “Michael! We’ve got an emergency!”

She finally opened the door a bit, holding onto the doorknob while knocking on it and calling his name. “Michael, come out here and handle this emergency before we end up with cops on the front lawn!”

“Huh?” He turned from his girlfriend, puzzled and his lips swollen from kissing. “Maria?”

“There's some guy out front trying to get inside. He insists he was invited but I don't know him and Max is about to kick his ass."

Courtney held her hands over her upper body, pissed off by the sudden interruption from HER. “Can’t Kyle go?”

Maria tried to rein in her temper at the other girls' tone. "Kyle isn't here." Somehow catching Michael with Courtney like THAT had rattled her.

“I’m coming,” Michael was already getting dressed again, knowing that with Max it could get ugly.

"Hurry up," she insisted, ignoring the looks Courtney was shooting at her.

“I’m coming,” he repeated and opened the door fully to step out.

Maria shuddered when she thought about it again and was surprised when she realized someone was speaking to her. “Huh?”

“Where’re your thoughts, DeLuca?” Isabel asked, amused.

She shrugged. “Nowhere in particular,” she denied.

“Stop that,” Tess complained when Leo kept nudging her and she stood up and hopped over the deck a few feet, cursing at the niggling pain where she had hurt her foot during the run on the beach.

“What’s wrong with you?” Kyle asked when she hopped past him.

“Don’t know, must’ve run over a mussel or something.”

“Well, have you looked at it?”

“Yeah, just a small cut.”

“Did you put anything on it?”

“It’s not that bad. It’ll heal on its own.”

“Why do women have to be so damn difficult?” he asked no one in particular. “Ask a simple question but can you ever give a simple answer? No, you can’t.”

“Amen to that,” Max muttered with a snort.

“Shut up,” came back at him from several sides.

Kyle got up and tossed her across his shoulders in a fireman’s hold and carried her across the deck to the open door. “You cut your foot on somethin’, especially out here, you need to clean it, put some antiseptic on it, and bandage it to keep it from getting infected.” He shook his head. “Guerin, you need to sit this one down and have a talk with her about basic safety.”

“Would you put me down?” Tess shrieked. Her stomach was doing crazy things with him touching her so much.

“Yeah, just as soon as we get to the bathroom and I can take a look at that foot.” Damn girl. She’d probably find a way to blame him if the wound didn’t heal properly.

“Kyle!” She hammered her fists against his back. “Come on! I’ll live.”

“Keep it up and you’re gonna wake the kids,” he said as he shouldered his way into one of the bathrooms.

She hung her head and gave up, letting him do whatever he wanted. Stupid bastard, she thought bitterly. As soon as he made sure her foot was okay he would leave her hot and confused again.

Kyle shuffled everything on the counter to one side and shifted her around until he could sit her down. “Why do you have to be so damn difficult all the time?” he muttered as he started running water in the sink.

“I’m not difficult,” she denied. “I’m pretty simple.”

“Not the first word that comes to mind when I think about you.” He checked the water temperature before turning her so he could put her foot under the running water.

“Whatever,” she answered stubbornly, trying to ignore the sparks when he touched her because she knew they were one-sided.

“Well, it doesn’t look too bad,” he said as he crouched down to examine the underside of her foot. He grabbed a towel to pat the skin dry before opening the cabinet below and pulling out a first aid kit.

“Yeah, I said that before.”

“It doesn’t have to be that bad to get infected,” he snapped as he pulled out a bottle of antiseptic. He paused to look at her. “Do you have any idea what an infection can do?”

“Not every small cut gets an infection and will make me lose my leg, Kyle,” she snorted but let him continue.

He had no idea why he was even bothering with her. It wasn’t like he needed to go to this much work to get his hands on... Whoa! Where had that thought come from? “This’s gonna burn,” he said as he uncapped the bottle.

Might distract me from other feelings, she thought.

He dabbed the antiseptic on and then peeled the backing off of a band-aid and pressed it over the wound.

“What’re you doin’ with Leo after this trip?” she asked when the silence became uncomfortable.

“I don’t know.” And he really didn’t. “Dad says he’s got an agent lookin’ for a place where he can keep Leo, but...” he shrugged.

“You want to keep him with you,” she guessed.

“Yeah, well, I enjoy havin’ the big moocher around. But the building doesn’t allow pets. We’ve got Loco but we can hide him. You can’t hide an animal Leo’s size.”

“No,” she agreed. “No chance.”

“I know eventually me an’ Michael will need our own places and when that happens I’ll get a place that’ll let me keep Leo. Until then... I don’t know.”

“I hope you’re not suggesting that my brother will move in with that girl anytime soon.”

Kyle snorted. “I’m not sure what’s goin’ on with him an’ that girl but it’ll pass. You get into a real relationship and things change, lines are drawn, and he’ll never go for it.” He shrugged one shoulder. “Not for long anyway.”

“He’ll have a relationship someday, but not with her.”

“Yep. I’m not sure what he thinks he’s doin’. No relationship’s gonna last long unless he puts some distance between him and Maria and that’ll never happen.”

“What if she wants it?” Tess thought out loud. “Think he wouldn’t agree?”

“Michael? Agree to not spend time with Maria? Agree to put distance between them?” He shook his head. “Never happen.”

“Hmm, wouldn’t be a bad thing, though. Maybe it’d finally open Maria’s eyes a bit at least.”

“Won’t do much good unless they both open their eyes.”

“Well, maybe it’s a start that you two… ended things,” she said, biting her lip. Yeah, better for me than for her, she thought.

He shrugged. “I tried to talk to her about it but she insists there’s nothin’ between them.”

“I know that denial game.”

“Yeah, well, everyone who knows the two of them knows that game.”

“What about you?” She dared to look at him. “Any reason why you ended things?”

“Just figured it was time to end things before someone got hurt.”

That could mean everything and nothing, she thought in frustration but didn’t ask any further. He would get suspicious about it and the last thing she needed now was him wondering if she had feelings for him.

“The thing with my parents just got me to thinkin’.” He wadded up the band-aid wrappers and tossed them in the trash can. “I don't wanna look back one day and realize I’ve lost two very good friends for somethin’ that was never goin’ anywhere anyway.”

“Smartest decision ever,” she teased, trying to play it cool as she hopped down without putting weight on her insured foot.

“Definitely in the top five,” he said, staring at the tanned skin of her thighs that were now at eye level.

“Yeah, guess every man has his moments now and then,” she rolled her eyes.

“I guess,” he murmured, catching himself at the last minute when he realized he was moments away from touching her. Pull it together, Valenti!

She was well aware of his gaze and she gripped the edge of the counter tighter. It wasn’t fair that he was allowed to watch her like this and then move on. “Rarely and barely, but it happens.”

He shifted closer to her as he stood up, crowding her against the counter. She was driving him crazy and he didn’t know why. She shouldn’t be so sexy. He shouldn’t be noticing her like this. He sure as hell shouldn’t be getting a hard-on over her. There were rules, he reminded himself as his gaze dropped to the cleavage exposed by the tiny tank top she was wearing. He shifted again and swallowed hard.

Okay, he was way too close now! Her breath was coming in pants and she didn’t know what to expect from him. For a few seconds she closed her eyes to concentrate and make sense of this situation, but when she opened them again, he was still close. It made her dizzy.

Kyle was trying to remember every reason why this was a bad idea but she was so close it was driving every sane thought from his mind. His right hand clenched reflexively before he ran his fingertips over her bare thigh, testing her response.

He had touched her thigh quite a few times today but this felt different – it was different. This time he was looking at her directly and it was like he was testing her. Was this just a game to him? What if Maria had told him something and now he was just trying to prove the theory? That would be bad.

He stretched his fingers out, letting his palm settle against her thigh before sliding it up over her hip. He pulled her close, their bodies pressed together from chest to hip as he stared into her eyes.

“What’re you doin’?” she whispered hoarsely. His body felt hot against her and the strong toned muscles under his tee shirt were turning her on like crazy.

“I wish to hell I knew,” he muttered. His left hand moved up and down her side, his thumb grazing her breast.

Damn it, she cursed internally when his touch affected her whole body. This situation was getting out of control and even though her brain was screaming at her to stop she didn’t listen, pressing herself against his rough palm instead.

Post by Double Trouble »

Natalie36: Thanks! Well, Liz hasn’t capitulated just yet.

CandyliciousLovah: Lol, he’s going. Oh, Courtney isn’t comfortable with Michael’s relationship with Maria. It’s a little too touchy-feely for her taste. And best friend or not, what girl’s gonna be okay with that sort of relationship between her boyfriend and his best friend? You’re right though, the little guys aren’t happy about it and we haven’t heard the last from them.

Earth2Mama: Lol, they weren’t expecting it either.

Oh, Trent isn’t finished. There was little Liz could have reported. Yeah, Trent’s an ass and he’s verbally abusive but he’s never been physically abusive, so there would be nothing of evidence she could report. Everyone he works with sees a different side of his personality.

Poor Maria indeed… we’ll have to wait to see what she does now.

sarammlover: Oh, we’ve got more Tess and Kyle coming up. Well… Courtney’s not out just yet. Although, we’ve got a couple of little guys who intend to help her out the door, lol. Trent does need to go away.

begonia9508: Yeah, there’s nothing funny about Trent or his behavior. He shows a different side of himself to his coworkers. Unfortunately, there are cops who have this Jekyll/Hyde personality and they do think their position gives them license to do what they want.

Cardinal: LOL!!!

Liz is trying to figure out what to do.

Those are all possible revenge scenarios… we’ll have to wait and see if he attacks in any of these ways.

Being in a relationship is going to force Michael to make some tough choices if he intends to give it a real shot. Interesting observation about Michael’s reasoning for pursuing a relationship with Courtney.

keepsmiling7: Max would be in big trouble, but thankfully they’re well out of Trent’s jurisdiction.

No, definitely no guarantees in life.

Max could give up… but we’re pretty sure he won’t.

mary mary: Lol.

Trent will do his level best to exact revenge.

Until fairly recently Liz has been trapped by her situation and basically surviving on her own, without benefit of friends or anyone else to lean on. So, her world is expanding and that will have a huge impact on her and Aaron.

Rodney: Why, oh, why?

xilaj: Max’s dad’s occupation hasn’t been disclosed yet. If nothing else, he does have access to good lawyers. We’ll be seeing more with his parents though.

Max would be more than willing to watch Aaron… and he may get that chance.

Oh, chances are good that Courtney will eventually play that card.

secretk: Lol, glad to know that got a rise out of Dreamers too. ;)

Oh, Maria is in for a rude awakening as things progress between Michael and Courtney. Looks like a good bet because for the moment Michael really doesn’t see it while Maria’s beginning to realize that there is more there than what she’s ever allowed herself to see.

True, there are law enforcement officers who do have violent tendencies and they hide in plain sight. Liz is going to have to make some changes soon.

Alien_Friend: No, no one knew Trent was a cop. We just let that cat outta the bag. Liz will have to make some changes soon. Trent… will pay for what he’s done, one way or the other. Max would certainly be well within his rights to throw in the towel, but thankfully he’s as stubborn as Liz is. Lol, then there is that sexual tension… so true.

Tess may just take your advice.

And as for Maria? We’ve gotta agree with you there!

Part 64

Poker Face

Kyle growled when she moved to encourage more contact and he swooped in to take her mouth in a heated kiss. He slid his hand up under her tank top, seeking skin to skin contact.

Tess groaned against his lips when the kiss turned passionate and wild in the time it took to blink. God, he was an amazing kisser, better than she had ever experienced. Or maybe it just felt like this because it was him?

Every sound she made excited him and when she moved against him he felt himself getting harder. He squeezed her ass and pulled her even closer.

There was a sound from outside and for a moment she wondered if it would be better if someone interrupted them. The thought was gone before it was fully recognized though and she leaned her body forward just slightly to reach the door with her hand, turning the little lock to the side.

He made a sound of approval low in his throat and tugged at her shorts. Now that he was certain they were on the same page there was no need to waste any time.

“Kyle,” she breathed when the impatient tugging on the denim material moved the inseam into just the right place to stimulate her more.

He heard the catch in her voice and it took a moment for him to realize what was going on. “I can make it feel even better,” he promised gruffly. He unfastened the shorts and slipped his hand inside, zeroing in where she needed it most.

Her hands moved back to the counter with a gasp and she gripped it tightly when her knees went weak and she couldn’t put her full weight on one of her feet.

Kyle was vaguely aware of the trembling in her leg since she was putting most of her weight on just the one. He quickly brushed the shorts and panties down, letting gravity take it from there and he lifted her up to sit on the counter before slipping his hand between her legs again.

Was this happening? she wondered when she looked at him and reached out to let her hand wander over the bulge in his jeans. She had she thought about making him this hard in her dreams so often and now it was happening.

He drew in a sharp breath at her touch and he jerked his belt free one-handed. He didn’t have as much luck with the fastening on his jeans but when he attempted to move his other hand she stopped him.

“Let me help,” she nipped at his lip and brushed his hand away to help him get them open.

He growled when the playful nip tugged at the piercing that was still healing. If anyone had warned him that the stupid thing was going to be so damn sensitive... the thought evaporated when her hand enveloped him and brought his attention to another sensitive part of his body.

Tess slipped her hand into the open jeans, letting her fingernails rasp against his still-covered erection. Damn, he was impressive.

Kyle grinned proudly when he heard the sound of approval she made and he increased the pressure and speed of his fingers.

“What’s taking so long, Valenti? We wanna play poker,” Michael yelled from outside, his voice sounding through the whole house and causing both of them to hesitate for a moment.

Kyle tensed for a moment as every reason why this was wrong reared up before him. She was his best friend’s little sister, he reminded himself. She should be off limits for that reason alone. His gaze was drawn to hers when she shifted her hand, reminding him why this was a very good thing.

“He won’t come,” she breathed against his lips.

He wasn’t so sure about that but he was fast losing the argument with his conscience. “No?” He was having trouble concentrating on anything but her.

“Nah,” she shook her head.

“Right. Maybe we should...” He rocked his hips forward, pressing his erection into her hand.

“Yeah...” she gripped him harder.

He grunted and fumbled in his pocket for a condom. He had no idea how this had happened but she wasn’t showing any signs of backing out and he wanted her.

“Prepared, huh?” she teased and sneaked the package out of his hand.

“I’m always prepared,” he said, his eyes darkening as he watched her.

“Good to know,” she bit her lip while she got the condom out of its wrapping. She lifted it up to blow in it slightly, keeping eye contact with him while she rolled it over him.

Kyle couldn’t look away from her. He moved his hands to her hips, pulling her closer to the edge of the counter and inhaling sharply when he brushed against her.

Tess spread her legs a little wider and ran a hand under the tee shirt he was still wearing, revealing a bit of the tanned skin of his toned stomach. He was so sexy in her eyes it wasn’t even funny and he would get a total ego boost if he knew what she saw in him.

Kyle had the weirdest sensation in his gut between her touch and the way she was watching him. His hands moved up and down on her thighs as he kissed her, ignoring the pain in his lip when the movement aggravated the piercing.

As soon as he started to kiss her, she moved closer to him, rubbing herself against him to get some relief. Maybe with a bit of luck she could guide his hard-on in the right direction without having to break contact between her hands and his strong chest.

He shifted and reached between them, taking himself in hand. He paused at her entrance, giving her time to change her mind but hoping like hell she wouldn’t.

She nodded, hardly visible, but certain he would understand.

Kyle pushed his hips forward, entering her one slow inch at a time and watching her, studying her expression as he finally slid in to the hilt.

A groan escaped her lips when he started to move inside her. She rested her forehead against his shoulder when he broke the kiss, probably because his piercing hurt. The skin around it was red.

He resisted the urge to do anything else that required involving his lips because the area around his piercing was sore as hell. His hands on her hips flexed for a moment before he slid one between her legs to touch her.

“Kyle,” she whimpered slightly, not too loud so no one would hear them. She already felt close to the edge after such a short time, but she blamed her fantasies for it because they had suggested this situation all too often.

His name, spoken in her voice and in a tone that was just begging for release, hit him hard and he responded to it. He pulled back and paused for just a moment before steadying her and slamming back inside. She clawed at his back and he knew if he hadn't been wearing a shirt he’d be marked for everyone to see.

Tess’ breath was coming in pants now and sweat broke out on her body. She would definitely need a shower afterwards, maybe he would join her?

Kyle grunted as he pushed both of them closer to the edge. He could feel it so close and he knew it was only moments away.

Her body straightened up when she felt herself slipping over the edge. She forced herself to look at him, leaning in to brush her lips just slightly against the corner of his mouth.

He held her tight as he thrust harder and faster. Her inner walls were contracting around him, adding to the sensation, and within moments he stiffened as he came. He rested his forehead against hers, eyes closed and breathing hard as his body began to recover from coming so hard.

As soon as the process of calming down started, the doubts came as well. What would he do now? she wondered. It wasn’t like he had ever shown any interest in her before, so what if he just stamped this as a one-off and went on like before?

As sanity returned Kyle found himself in an uncomfortable position. He shouldn’t have had sex with her. How long had she been irritating him? Not to mention her relationship with his best friend. He glanced down at their still-joined bodies and winced. This shouldn’t have happened for so many reasons, he thought as he withdrew from her and busied himself with disposing the condom.

Tess watched him carefully as she slipped from the counter to collect her clothes. What was he thinking? “Guess I’m gonna shower quickly,” she said uncertainly.

“Yeah, I should probably do the same,” he mumbled as he put himself back together. “I’ll just hit the shower down the hall.”

She tried to hide her disappointment when he obviously couldn’t get out of the room fast enough. “Okay.”

“This was um, nice,” he said and immediately kicked himself for it.

Nice? Was he fucking kidding her? “Yeah, nice,” she said, trying to suppress the snort afterwards.

“Right, well...” He tried to open the door, only remembering it was locked after jerking on it several times. “See ya later,” he muttered and made his escape. What the hell had he just done?

“See you later,” she said bitterly and flipped him off, but he didn’t see it because he was already gone.

Kyle hurried down the hall, mentally kicking himself and cursing under his breath. Talk about making the mother of all mistakes! Screwing Tess in the bathroom was damn well at the top of the list!

“Stupid asshole,” Tess muttered to herself in the shower, letting the hot water run over her still weak body. She didn’t even notice the few tears that were running down her cheeks. It hurt to be rejected so quickly and especially the way he had done it right after getting off.

****

Kyle wasn’t expecting it when he bumped into someone and he glanced up to see Max standing there. “What?” he snapped.

“Nothin’, man. How’s Tess?”

“How the hell should I know?”

Max frowned at him. “You’re the one who brought her inside to take a look at her foot.”

“Oh, that, yeah, it wasn’t serious.”

Max frowned at the guy’s weird behavior. “And where is she now?”

“Said she was gonna take a shower.”

The other man looked at the closed bathroom door behind them, wondering what was going on. Had they fought again? “We wanna play poker. You in?”

Shit, if he didn’t play it was gonna be obvious that something was wrong. But if he did play his mind wasn’t gonna be on the game and that would be a dead giveaway too. “I don’t know. I should probably take Leo for a walk.”

“The dog’s been out with us on the beach all day, man. Matter of fact, I think he’s snorting under the table outside.”

“Oh, well, sure, deal me in.”

“Sure,” Max said, looking at his friend skeptically when he passed him. “You should put some of that salve on the piercing. It looks sore.”

“Yeah, thanks,” he mumbled, trying to ignore the reason for it.

“We’re waiting, so make it quick, Valenti,” he called after his friend. He needed to talk to Tess later. Something was off. The question was why.

“Be there in a few.” Damn it, now Evans was suspicious and he had become Tess’ new best friend. How long before the guy knew what had happened? Or maybe she wouldn’t mention it, he thought hopefully.

“Is he coming?” Michael looked up when Max came back on the deck. “What the hell is taking so long? It wasn’t like her foot was that messed up.”

“Deal him in.” Max shrugged and dropped back into his chair. “Hell if I know what’s takin’ so long.”

“Tess has always been a pussy when it comes to small cuts,” Maria threw in and rolled her eyes.

“You’d think the two of them would be screaming the roof down by now.” Michael shuffled the cards and shook his head.

“You know, that could be taken more than one way,” Tony mentioned with a grin.

“Huh?” He looked up and pinned Tony with a stare. “What the hell are you talkin’ about?”

“He means sex, dumbass,” Isabel said, smacking the back of her brother’s head. “I’d think YOU especially would know that, Mr. Sex-a-holic.”

“Mr. Sex-a-what?” he muttered as he rubbed the back of his head. “Kyle and Tess?” He snorted and shook his head. “That’s ridiculous.”

If he only knew, Maria thought, amused.

Michael stared at the cards for a moment before he slowly turned his head to look at Isabel. “Kyle and Tess? Really?”

She shrugged. “I’ve seen worse things.”

He shrugged. “That’d be weird.”

Max looked at him intensely. Maybe one of these days he’d have to face that the possibility was there.

“Hey, we need some chips or somethin’ to munch on,” he said, letting the other thoughts go.

“Got ‘em,” Kyle said when he walked out on the deck. He had dropped the idea of a shower to avoid appearing even more suspicious.

“Cool.” Michael snagged them and tore the bag open. “Tess gonna live?”

“Yeah, looks good in my opinion,” he shrugged, hoping that no one would be suspicious. He shoved down the guilt he felt over what had just happened between them. He didn’t understand why he had even let it happen. Sex he understood, but sex with his best friend’s sister… that was a whole other ballgame.

“Good.” He shoved a handful of chips in his mouth and wiped his palm on his jeans before reaching for the cards again.

“Ya know, you don’t have to wipe your hands on your jeans all the time, baby,” Courtney said as she got up and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.

Baby, Maria mocked in her head. Ungh.

“Closest thing around,” he said with a grin.

“He’s a pig, you’re just gonna have to face that,” Maria said, winking at Michael with a teasing grin.

“I’m not a pig,” he denied. “They’re old jeans, we’re just hangin’ out, and they’re within reach.” He stuck his tongue out at Maria. “I could’ve wiped them on you but I decided to be a little more civilized.”

“I don’t think civilized and you fit in the same sentence, CB,” she laughed when he acted like he was going to get up and get her.

“I can be civilized... sometimes.”

“When you’re alone maybe? Because I don’t know if any of us have ever seen that.”

He threw a potato chip at her and leaned forward. “Okay, who’s in?”

Maria leaned to the side to look at Tony’s cards. “We are.”

Max snorted at them and checked his own cards as he played with his poker chips.

“He always has to drag it out,” Michael rolled his eyes when the other man took his time to decide if he wanted to play with the cards he had received.

Max just shrugged. “No reason to rush, but if you’re in that big a hurry to throw your money away, Guerin...”

Liz reached over to cover his mouth. “He’s in.”

“Me too,” Kyle nodded.

Isabel fanned her cards out and nodded. “Same here.”

Tess walked out on the deck, relieved when everyone seemed to be busy with poker because it saved her from questions or looks. She hopped over to a deck chair at the other end and got comfortable in it, grabbing a magazine from the floor.

Leo lifted his head at the noise and got to his feet, ambling over to her and flopping down next to her chair.

“No chance of getting rid of you, huh?” she asked, but her words were soft. She enjoyed the dog’s big body next to her and stretched one foot out to rub his back.

He sighed happily at the attention and shifted to move closer to her chair.

Tess looked at the dog and smiled sadly. “Not getting any love either, huh?” she whispered to him and placed the magazine aside to roll onto her side. She wrapped one arm around him. “Guess means we have to snuggle.”

Leo yawned widely and snuffled. He whined quietly, sensing her distress.

“I’m okay,” she told him. “My own fault.”

He shifted and licked her arm before putting his head down again.

****

As the evening passed the gang split up into smaller groups again. None of them wanted to go home the next day, but they knew it was hardly avoidable. Liz especially wasn’t looking forward to what would happen the next day when she got back to her shitty life. What would Trent say? How would he react to what had happened earlier?

“You shouldn’t think too much. Tomorrow will come soon enough,” Michael said when he passed her and squeezed her shoulder.

She looked up and forced a smile. “Yeah, you’re probably right.” Her glance shifted to Max, who wasn’t sitting far away from her. She shivered when their eyes met briefly and quickly focused on something else again.

Michael stepped over Maria, who was lying on the ground, head resting on Tony’s stomach. “You’re always in the way, RP.”

“Bite me, Guerin,” she stuck her tongue out before she concentrated on the other man again, handing him one of the earphones for her iPod.

“I’d rather bite someone else,” he mumbled more to himself and his girlfriend, when he sat down behind her on the stairs and nipped her neck.

Courtney chuckled and leaned back against him, taking his mouth in a kiss while her hand traveled over the new tattoo on his arm, which was covered with crème and a bandage again. “Does it still hurt? You probably should’ve avoided the ocean last night.”

“It’s good, and it was wrapped up last night. Nothing to worry about.”

“Looks great, by the way.”

“Yeah, Evans knows what he’s doin’ with a needle.”

“Think I can get one too?”

“Sure, got any ideas?”

“Not yet.”

“Just don’t put his name on you,” Isabel advised as she passed them on her way up to the deck again after taking a dip in the ocean. “Would totally ruin your skin.”

“Shut up, Iz,” Michael snorted. Nah, he didn’t even want his name on her.

His older sister laughed and continued to walk inside to get a towel. “What’re you doin’?” she asked when she noticed Alex in the kitchen.

He looked up and had to force his gaze back to her face when it slipped over her body more than once. “Got a bit hungry.”

She wished she knew why it affected her so much when he looked at her the way he just had. He was just... just the nerd king from upstairs. He was sooo not her type! But that didn’t stop her from reacting to him. “What’re you making?” she asked to rid herself of her thoughts.

“Just a sandwich. You want one?”

“Sure.”

He walked over to get one of the big knives to cut the sandwich in half. “Hope you like a lotta cheese.”

“As long as it’s not bleu cheese,” she said and made a face.

“Nah, it’s not,” he chuckled. “Don’t like it?”

“I don’t eat things that smell like dirty feet.”

“You’ve obviously never eaten my mom’s cheese sauce for macaroni then. She uses that kinda cheese for it, but well... it tastes a lot different with all the other stuff mixed in.”

“Well, that’s different,” she said slowly.

“It’s delicious, you wouldn’t believe it.”

She studied him for a moment. He had told her they had given up on his sister when they were discussing his situation. “Are you close to your parents?”

Alex stared down at his food, while his lower back leaned against the counter. “Not really, no. Not anymore.”

“I guess it’s tough with the situation with your sister.” She watched him pick at his sandwich for a moment before biting into it. “You visit her a lot?”

“As much as time and life allows,” he mumbled around a mouthful of sandwich and shrugged.

She nodded. “I guess that’s difficult, trying to squeeze that in between working two jobs and taking classes.”

“That’s my life,” he said with a weak smile.

Part 65

Post by Double Trouble »

CandyliciousLovah: Lol, well, Tess is rethinking that at the moment. Maria may just begin thinking along those same lines.

begonia9508: Thanks!

Lol, well, Kyle did sort of start it.

Yes, things are definitely going to get complicated.

Natalie36: Yes, the beach weekend is drawing to a close, but we’re not there just yet.

keepsmiling7: Lol, he was definitely prepared.

Max is dreading it too. Actually, so is Liz.

Earth2Mama: Yep, these two have their work cut out for them, but we’re confident that they can pull it together given time… and perhaps a swift kick or two along the way.

Maria is in complete agreement with that sentiment.

mary mary: Lol, the girls have some obstacles to get past, that’s for sure.

You’re in luck. ;) TIC TAC is the fic we’re updating every week.

Alien_Friend: Oh, Trent will get his.

Lol, that’s quite the list for Kyle. Although, Tess does have Max to lean on, so we’ll see what happens.

We think you’re right about Michael.

Isabel is seeing Alex differently… although we’re pretty sure that’s a two-way street.

They will definitely be leaving with more than they arrived with, but the weekend isn’t quite over yet.

Eva: Thanks! So much happened in a short time for Kyle and Tess, but they’ll work through it. As for Max… we think you’re right. He’d be wise to watch his back.

xilaj: Liz does know that changes have to be made, you’re right about that! Isabel and Alex are both seeing the other a bit differently. Maria’s beginning to see something in her best friend that she’s never noticed before. Tess and Kyle will work things out given time.

Part 65

A Fault Confessed is Half Redressed

“Looking into getting a roommate might not be a bad idea.” They had talked about it before and he didn’t seem totally opposed to the idea.

“I’m not giving up on that.”

“You know, and this’s just a thought, Liz kinda seems like she could use a new place to stay.”

“Yeah, but she also comes with a kid and I’m not quite sure how well that’d fit with the noise coming from downstairs, especially at nights.”

She shrugged one shoulder. “True. Couldn’t be worse than her current situation though.” She rolled her eyes. “Of course, then you’d have to adjust to having a four-year-old underfoot and that does take some getting used to.”

He had to laugh at that. “I guess I’ll pass this time.”

“I guess we’ll have to sit back and wait to see what happens with her and Evans.” If the two of them ever got their acts together.

“I have a feeling that won’t take as long as you think,” he nodded in direction of the window where they could see that Liz had taken the place next to Max in the swing on deck.

“Ya think? They’re both stubborn.” She took a bite of her sandwich and chewed thoughtfully as she watched them. “It doesn’t take much of a stretch of the imagination to see them together. And Aaron already loves him.” She shook her head. “I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.”

“He doesn’t really come across as a man who gets along with kids, huh?”

“No, he really doesn’t. But watching him with Aaron recently it’s easy to see just how well he’s hidden that side of himself.”

“Got the feeling every member of this group has this hidden side of themselves,” he said and looked at her directly.

She glanced away after a moment, uncomfortable with his piercing gaze. It felt like he could see things that she didn’t necessarily want him to see. “Most people do, don’t they?”

“I guess…”

“It’s just a safety measure, a way of protecting yourself.” Which was true, but saying it aloud sounded kind of stupid considering they were hiding themselves from their friends, people they trusted and cared so much about.

He snorted, but agreed. “Ya know what the most ridiculous thing is?”

“What?”

“People always put on a show to hide who they really are and in the end they wonder why their relationships don’t work out. Then they say: Oh we just drifted apart. But the truth is that they finally saw behind those walls and saw their true face and they didn’t like it.”

She lifted an eyebrow. “That’s deep. And sadly enough, it’s also true. It takes a lot of trust and faith in someone to be willing to expose yourself that way though.” She sighed. “Just because you love someone doesn’t necessarily make you ready to open yourself up like that.”

“Ever wondered why?”

“Got a theory?”

“Not really. They say it’s to protect yourself from getting hurt, but well, if you’re honest, that never really works in the end.“

“Uh-huh, maybe not but...” She switched tactics. “What about you? Do you find it easy to open yourself up like that in a relationship?”

“Well, I’ve never been with someone that long, but I like to be myself.”

“I believe that about you,” she said after a moment.

“Just grabbing some beer,” Maria said when she walked in and had the feeling of disturbing something important.

“So why haven’t you ever been with anyone that long?” Isabel asked when they were alone again.

He swallowed down the last bite of his sandwich and wiped his mouth. “Well, I kinda get the feeling I don’t necessarily strike most girls as a man they wanna date immediately,” he smirked. “And my free time is pretty limited right now.”

“So a pretend relationship works well for you at the moment,” she said with a soft smirk.

“Could be better, but I’ll take what I can get,” he countered.

“What’d you do before you came to the city?”

“Well, normal teenage stuff I guess. Went to high school, wondered who I’d ask to prom…”

“You went to prom?” She winced when the words got out before she could stop them. “I mean, you know, you just don’t strike me as the type of guy who...” she cleared her throat. “And I’m just digging this hole deeper.”

“Yeah, and you’re very good at that, Guerin,” he shook his head and straightened up. “I guess I’ll call it a night.”

She nodded, strangely reluctant to let him go. “Have you enjoyed this weekend, Alex?”

He smirked with his back to her before he looked at her again. “Wasn’t s bad as expected.”

She hid a smile. “I’m glad you’re not suffering,” she said and stuck her tongue out at him.

“Not as bad as your sister, I think,” he winked at her. “G’night, Isabel.”

She chuckled. “G’night, Alex.”

*****

It had gotten silent on the deck though that almost everybody was still up. Maria was still lying on the deck that was still a little warm even though the sun had set quite a while ago. She had her eyes closed while she listened to music on her iPod with one earpiece. Her head was slowly lifted up and down where it rested on Tony’s chest, a soothing feeling in contrast to the thoughts in her head.

Kyle was lying on the porch swing, one foot lazily keeping it in motion while he listened to the sounds of the ocean. Without everyone talking and laughing it drowned everything else out. He cracked one eye open when the door opened, disturbing the quiet and he closed it again when he saw Isabel. “Put your boyfriend to bed?” he asked with a smirk.

“Yeah, why, wanna be the next one?” She rolled her eyes at him.

“Next boyfriend or the next one you put to bed?”

“Ungh, Valenti,” she made a face. “I’m not kissing you goodnight or anything else.”

“Sure?” He waggled his eyebrows playfully. “I’m pretty good at the anything else.”

Tess coughed and struggled to hold in the sip she had taken of her beer when she overheard his comment. Yeah asshole! And you’re even better at being a dick afterwards.

Michael glanced at his little sister, following her murderous gaze to his best friend and wondering what was going on there. “You okay?” he asked.

“Yeah,” she waved him off and scratched Leo’s head when she realized she had disturbed the dog’s peace as well.

“Uh-huh.” He didn’t believe her. “You guys weren’t even gone long enough for him to piss you off.”

Kyle shifted uncomfortably. “Shut the fuck up, Guerin.” He was doing everything he could to block that moment from his thoughts.

Max had been watching the scene before him while Liz fell asleep against his side and he was determined to not wake her up because he was pretty sure she’d go right to bed then. Something had happened between Kyle and Tess earlier and he would soon find out what it was.

“Maybe they had a fight,” Courtney whispered.

Michael snorted at that. “They fight all the damn time; it’s just part of their relation...” He frowned and turned his head to study them as his thoughts turned speculative. No, he decided, they were acting like they normally did, like they hated each other. He frowned. Weren’t they?

“I’m calling it a night,” Kyle got up and placed his empty bottle aside. Guerin had that look on his face as if he was thinking and that wasn’t good. He should disappear before uncomfortable questions could be asked and tomorrow it would hopefully all be forgotten.

Coward, Tess thought when he disappeared into the house. She actually thought about going after him and calling him a coward to his face but decided it would only raise her brother’s suspicions if she did.

“Is he acting weirder than normal?” Michael frowned and looked at his older sister.

Isabel was beginning to get her own suspicions about what was going on but she knew better than to feed his imagination. “He’s just had a rough week,” she said, hoping it would be enough for him to drop the subject.

Maria listened to the conversation, but didn’t interact. Maybe it was just because of his parents, she thought and rolled her eyes when Michael was easily distracted by his girlfriend.

Tony chuckled quietly. He wondered if this group had any idea how much drama they created for themselves by not talking things out.

“Guess I’m going to bed too,” Isabel said when she glanced around and saw all the couples snuggled up. Well, and Tess with the dog.

“Gonna go snuggle up with your nerd?” Michael teased.

She flipped him off. “Shut up, brother dear.”

He grinned. “No denial, huh? Guy probably talks a lot during sex... you know, being more cerebral than physical or sexual.”

“At least they have sex,” Maria couldn’t help but throw that in his face.

“Nerds in general or Isabel and Alex?” he asked with a smirk.

“Maybe both,” she said and looked at him, adding a silent: ‘Everyone but you’.

He shot a glare at her. All he needed to set Courtney off about that subject again was for her to catch Maria teasing him about it. “I don’t see it happening.”

“Goodnight all,” Isabel rolled her eyes and opened the door, causing enough noise to wake Liz up.

Max bit back the annoyance when he felt Liz shift against him, hoping she would settle down and relax again instead of getting up and going inside. Alone.

“What time is it?” Liz mumbled and forced herself to wake up more fully. Her gaze moved over Max’ chest up to his face and she blushed slightly when she realized that she had fallen asleep on him.

“It’s not that late,” he said, shifting the arm wrapped around her so he could reach the button on the side to illuminate the face and show her the time.

“Well past midnight,” she noticed and straightened up further. “I think I’m going to bed.”

Max bit his bottom lip to stop himself from offering to go with her. No need to get shot down in front of everyone, he decided.

“Goodnight everyone,” she said and got up from her seat to go inside. Her knees felt just a bit wobbly when she stood, but at least she was still able to walk without anyone noticing.

He sighed and dropped his head back, resisting the urge to thump it hard against the swing. He didn’t know what else to do to prove to her that he wasn’t going anywhere or that he could be good for her and Aaron.

“She’ll give in eventually,” Tess said quietly.

“Yeah, is that before or after Aaron graduates from college?” he grumbled under his breath.

“Patience Maxie,” Maria winked at him when she sat up to take a sip of her beer.

“Patience is not one of my strong points where that woman is concerned.”

“It’s obvious that she wants you too though,” Courtney said to join the conversation.

Great, now he had a bunch of girls getting involved. “Then why’s she insisting on bein’ difficult and keepin’ her distance?”

“Well, women like to play hard to get sometimes. Some women like games.”

“Liz isn’t playing games,” Maria disagreed, “she’s just considering what’s best for her little brother.”

“What’s it gonna take to make her believe that I’m not goin’ anywhere?” Great, now he was engaging them.

“Just keep showing her that you won’t leave,” Maria said confidently.

He rolled his eyes. “Y’know, I do get that she has Aaron to consider but I don’t get why she won’t leave Asshole.”

“She will,” Michael said matter-of-factly. He didn’t like what he had seen earlier between Prez and Max. It wasn’t good at all that Liz had to go back home tomorrow, but he was just as determined as his friend to get her out of that situation. “She’s just worried that she can’t afford something else and she doesn’t wanna leave the place where her babysitter lives, but we’re gonna convince her that she’s able to get out with our help.”

“It’s a dangerous situation and I know she doesn’t see a way out of it but it’s only a matter of time before that sonofabitch turns physical.” He ran a hand over his face. “She stays between him an’ Aaron but the day’s gonna come where that’s not enough to stop him.”

“Isabel got a place for Aaron in the hospital daycare, so there’s the first step,” Michael told him. “We’ll figure the rest out. I could ask my Dad to look around for an apartment for her, somethin’ near the café and campus.”

Max decided not to mention that he had offered her his place. “A roommate situation would be ideal, but it’d have to be the right person.”

“I’d take an apartment with her if it meant moving to a nicer place,” Maria snorted, knowing it was almost impossible to find something in New York what was nice, central, and affordable.

“Really?” Max sat up straighter. “You’d do that?”

“Sure. She’s cool and Cody seems to get along pretty well with her bro, so that’d just be another plus.”

“Say we somehow, between the lot of us, found a place that worked for both of you... the location, getting around her stubborn mindset... could you break your lease?”

“I think I have like, a hundred reasons for termination without notice.”

“Probably more than that,” Michael muttered.

Tony sat up and rested his chin on Maria’s shoulder from behind. “Your apartment doesn’t come across all that great.”

“Well, it’s not fancy,” she said with a smirk and used the opportunity of him sitting up to lean against his upper body.

“Not fancy is the understatement of the year,” Michael said.

“At least it’s in Manhattan,” she stuck her tongue out at him.

“It’s still a crap-hole,” he said with a teasing grin.

“Alright, back to the original question,” Max said impatiently. “Maybe we could look for an affordable apartment. Throw all of our contacts together, we have a good chance…”

Tony grinned. “Hell, I’ve got a huge place,” he said. The girls would never go for it and it would annoy the guys. “Close to everything.”

“Hmm, moving in with T-man,” Maria said with a smirk. “Only if ya walk around in your boxers all the time.”

“Not exactly what I had in mind,” Max growled.

“Hell, whatever keeps the girls happy,” Tony said with a wink.

It was nice to fool around, Maria thought. Tony fit in the group very well and she had a feeling that they could be really good friends. Her gaze slipped over him briefly. What a waste, he was hot as hell. “That’d definitely make the girls happy.”

“Doesn’t really solve the problem though.” Max knew Liz would never go for it but just the thought of it irritated him.

“I’ll talk to Dad about it,” Michael agreed and wrapped his arms around his girlfriend when he felt her shivering. “He’s got a lot of contacts and we can ask the guys at the department too.”

“Since we’re on the subject of this particular situation, whaddaya think Prez is gonna do to retaliate? I mean, even though he’s an abusive asshole, Evans popped him a good one in front of witnesses.”

“I doubt he’ll do anything officially, doesn’t really have a legal leg to stand on. And if Max is right about the things he said about the situation. But that doesn’t mean he’ll just sit back and wait.”

“IF I’m right?” Max echoed.

Tony took the beer out of Maria’s hand and emptied it. “You’re right, okay?” Weird, he had never thought Kennedy would be that kinda guy, but now that Evans had brought it up, it was suddenly all too obvious.

Max settled back into the swing and sighed heavily. “Let him come after me, I can handle him.”

“I don’t think we have to worry about your ugly ass, Evans,” Michael snorted. “But we should look out for our little brunette friend.”

“Yeah, I’ll admit, him waitin’ at home for them worries me.”

“You can’t do anything about it, Max,” Maria said rationally. “She can’t just stay with you from one to the next day. All you can do is be there for her when she needs you.”

“She could just stay with me,” he muttered.

Tess rolled her eyes. “Don’t be so stubborn.”

“Me? I’m not the one bein’ so stubborn.”

Maria felt a small wave of sickness as she watched Michael and Courtney kissing on the steps, suddenly totally unaware of what was going on around them. Ungh, he wasn’t the kinda guy who snuggled and kissed just for the sake of kissing. It was so weird to see him like this. His strong tattooed arm was wrapped around the other girl’s slim waist while the other rested on his raised knee. The kiss they shared was slow and looked gentle, another thing that was so not him. She forced her gaze away from them and towards Max. “Don’t push her.”

“What am I supposed to do? Everyone says take it slow, she says take it slow, but you have no idea what it takes to sit on my hands when I know what she goes home to every night. She and Aaron shouldn’t be livin’ with that asshole.”

Tess got up and sat down next to Max. “They’ll be outta there soon. Just not tomorrow.”

Leo lifted his head when his newest interest changed positions and he growled in disagreement, but stayed where he was.

“Yeah, I guess it’s just not gonna be soon enough for my taste. She’s exasperating and frustrating...” he shook his head and lowered his voice. “And at the same time I can’t get her outta my head.”

Maria looked out at the ocean and smirked at that. “Who would’ve thought that Max Evans had a heart?”

“It’s a well-kept secret,” Max growled when he heard her amused tone.

Her eyes slipped back to her best friend and Courtney. Yeah and who would’ve thought he’d be capable of a relationship, she thought with an eye roll.

Not the only well-kept secret around though, he thought as he watched Maria. That one right there was so well-kept she and Michael were both blind to it.

“Didn’t think the green-eyed monster would come out so soon, huh?” Tess whispered in his ear when she noticed the way Maria was looking at her brother.

“Too bad it couldn’t have happened sooner,” he muttered quietly. “’Cause with it happening this way people are gonna get hurt.”

“Yeah,” she sighed and relaxed against his side.

Max hooked his arm over her shoulders. He was careful to keep his voice low when he spoke. “What’s goin’ on with you an’ Valenti?”

She lifted her head slightly to look at him and tried to smile but failed. “I’m so stupid, Max.”

He studied her face, taking in the emotions flashing in her blue eyes. “Why?” he asked carefully.

Tess lowered her head again and avoided looking at him while she debated if the truth was an option. God, she needed someone to talk to about it, but was Max the right one? Well, who else was even possible, she asked herself. “We had sex,” she whispered quietly.

“You had...” He stared at her and shook his head. He knew something had happened but he hadn’t expected her to say things had gone that far. He hugged her tighter as he recalled the way Valenti had basically ignored her most of the evening. That in itself wasn’t unusual, but after having sex with him that would’ve stung more than usual. “Ah, Tess, what were you thinkin’, girl?” he murmured against her hair.

She snorted slightly and quickly wiped away a tear before anyone could notice. “If I recall right, I wasn’t really thinking at all.”

“Guess when it comes to that most of us don’t think.” He sighed and rubbed her arm. “What’d he say after?”

“Pretty much nothing. He was gone before I could form a sentence.”

“Well, that was an ass thing to do.”

“Maybe I deserve it,” she straightened up a bit and shook her head. “What was I expecting?”

“Why would you deserve it?”

She shrugged. “For what I did to Maria and my family when I just left because of him?”

He shook his head negatively. “Tess, you’ve been punished enough for that. I don’t know what’s goin’ through Valenti’s head but whatever it is, I doubt he’s thinkin’ straight.”

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure he already thinks our little encounter was a stupid mistake.”

“You gonna confront him about it?”

“I don’t know…” She ran her hand through her curly hair. “I mean, do I really need to hear that shit? ‘We shouldn’t have done it. It was all a mistake… It doesn’t mean anything, blah, blah, blah…’”

“Uh-huh, you’re just gonna roll over and let it go.”

“I don’t know, Max. I mean, it’s not like I can avoid him anyway.”

“Might be why it’s a good idea to get it out in the open.”

“Well, I…” Tess hesitated when movement caught her eyes and she saw Chase struggling to push the heavy deck door open. She got up and went over to help him. “Hey, little man, what’re you doin’ up?”

“C-Cody,” he stuttered out, panicked, “he’s sick. I think he can’t breathe!”

Maria shot to her feet immediately, already on her way inside to her brother’s room. “Oh my God.”

Michael got to his feet as Tess picked Chase up and got him out of the way. He ran into the kitchen and opened up one of the cabinets, reaching up to the highest shelf and pulling down his emergency kit before running after Maria.

Post by Double Trouble »

mary mary: Hopefully it isn’t something serious. Tony could not be more right, lol.

CandyliciousLovah: Lol, we’ll find out more today. Oh, there’s a good chance the green-eyed monster will be revealing itself soon.

keepsmiling7: Yeah, they are!

The gang won’t let her disappear into the background… they’ll make sure she knows they’re there and willing to help.

Natalie36: We’ll find out how Cody is today.

begonia9508: That’s true. They needed to know so they can help.

Eventually we’ll be getting her out of that situation and into something much better.

We’ll check on Cody today.

sarammlover: Yes, they are. Trent is scary… and he’s in a position of authority, that makes him even worse. Chances are good that it’s only going to get harder for Maria. Yeah, Tess does need to talk to Kyle… but they’re both stubborn too. Lol, Alex and Isabel are doing well. We’ll find out how Cody is today.

Earth2Mama: We’re checking in on the little man today.

Alien_Friend: Cody is lucky to have so many people around him who know what to do in these situations.

You’re not alone, lol. Kyle’s sort of in the doghouse.

Maria gave Max some very good advice and we think he’s gonna take it. He’ll be impatient at times but he wants things to work out.

Rodney: Yeah, Kyle’s all twisted up over this.

We’ll find out soon what Liz is going to do about her situation.

Cardinal: Lol, good question.

Liz’s situation will hopefully be getting a little better soon.

Kyle is pretty mixed up right now. He’s got some things to figure out.

Max does have the advantage of having gone public. Lol, it’ll be interesting to see what happens when that information does get to Maria.

Latent stalker issue will be coming back around soon.

Tony and Courtney, huh? Interesting…

Part 66

In Exchange

Cody was sitting in the bed, his face and covered with tears. His breath was coming in small, fast pants when his sister ran into the room. “Cody,” she rushed to his side and pulled him closer to check his heart rate first. “His heart’s way too fast, Michael.”

He sat down on the opposite side and jerked his stethoscope out of the kit, quickly inserting the earpieces and pressing the chestpiece to the little boy’s chest. He moved the piece around and after a few moments jerked the earpieces out and dropped it to the bed. “It’s not his heart, Maria,” he said as he glanced up at the others who had gathered in the room.

Max had picked Aaron up and Tess was standing close by. “Go get me a lunch sack from the kitchen, Tess.” He rubbed Cody’s back as he pushed his upper body forward slightly. “This’s more like a panic attack, Maria, it’s not his heart,” he said again.

Maria sat on the bed, petrified while she let Michael take care of her brother. She held her cell tightly in her hand, ready to call an ambulance until Tony appeared next to her and placed his hand over hers so that she loosened her grip a bit.

“Here,” Tess was back and handed her brother the requested item.

He nodded and took the bag, opening it one-handed while he pulled Cody against his side. “Cody, I know this’s scary, little man, but it’s gonna be okay.” He shaped the bag and cupped the opening over the little boy’s mouth. “Try to concentrate on breathing normally, okay?” He could see the fear in the little boy’s eyes and it went straight to his heart.

“It’s gonna be okay, Cody,” Maria said, reaching for his little hand and caressing it. “Do what Michael told you, okay?”

Michael rubbed his back in soothing circles. He could feel the boy’s heartbeat still pounding but he could tell it was beginning to slow. “He’s gonna be okay, Maria.”

She just nodded quietly and tried to stay strong for her brother. It wouldn’t help him if she panicked as well.

“I don’t know what set it off but nothin’ about this suggests anything but a panic attack. Hey,” he reached over and nudged her chin up, “you had them before when you were younger, remember? It’ll pass.”

“Okay,” she nodded. “Don’t worry about me. Just make him feel better.”

He chuckled. “If you’re relaxed, he’ll relax quicker,” he said with a wink.

“Wha’s wrong wif him?” Aaron looked at Max, his eyes wide.

“He’s okay, buddy,” Max said with a reassuring smile. “He’s havin’ a panic attack. That’ll happen when you start breathing too fast and you don’t breathe out fast enough to keep up with the air you’re breathin’ in.”

Michael pulled the paper bag away when Cody’s heartbeat became normal again. He slipped from the bed and crouched down in front of him. “Better, little man?”

Cody hiccupped slightly and tears started to spill over his cheeks as the scare began to pass. “How come that happened, Mike?”

“Well, sometimes a bad dream or something else upsets us and then we start to breathe wrong.” He ruffled the boy’s hair. “Did you have a bad dream maybe?”

The little boy gnawed on his fisted hand and nodded silently.

“It was just a dream,” Michael said calmly.

He nodded and curled up against Maria’s side. “I don’t like scary dreams,” he mumbled.

“Yeah, me neither,” she said and took him in her arms, her chest still tight from the fear that something serious could happen to her brother.

“Can I stay wif you tonight, M’ria?”

She nodded. “Sure.”

“Otay.” He lifted his head to look around the room and he buried his head when he saw Michael’s girlfriend in the doorway.

“Let’s get your stuff to my room so the other boys can sleep again, huh?” Maria said gently and got up with him in her arms.

Tess bit her lip before stepping forward. “I can get his things for you so you can go ahead and take him to your room,” she offered.

Maria was too busy focusing on Cody rather than on who had offered help to her, so she just nodded. “Don’t forget his stuffed animal please.”

As soon as she and Cody had cleared the room Tess moved to hand Chase over to her brother. He quickly made a grab for the stethoscope and put the earpieces in his ears. He pressed the chestpiece to his open palm and frowned at it. “Make it work, Mike.”

Michael chuckled quietly and pressed it against the spot right over the boy’s heart. “Hear anything?”

The little boy’s eyes widened and he pulled the chestpiece away to look at it. After a moment he placed it against his uncle’s chest and he lifted his eyebrows when Michael shifted his hand to the right. “Boom, boom, boom... it’s loud!”

“Yeah, that’s the way it should be, buddy.”

Chase stared at the silver disc beneath his hand for a moment longer before his gaze shifted to the doorway that Maria has left through with Cody. “Cody’s heart don’t sound like that, huh?” he asked quietly.

“No,” Michael shook his head. “It’s not that strong.”

He lowered the chestpiece and looked up at his uncle. “Why?”

“Well, sometimes it just happens to people that a part of their body isn’t working right from the moment they’re born.”

“How come the doctors don’t just fix it?”

“It can only be fixed by exchanging the heart and before they can do that, they need to find one that fits,” Michael told his nephew patiently while he settled the boy into bed again, hoping that he would be able to go back to sleep after this.

“Where do they get ‘nother heart, Uncle Mike?” He frowned. “Do they got a store for those?”

Ungh, that wasn’t really a good bedtime story, Michael thought. “We’ll talk about this later, buddy. You should go back to sleep for now.”

“Okay.” Chase yawned and snuggled down under the covers. “I hope they get that other heart soon.”

“Yeah, we all hope that,” he ruffled the boy’s hair and straightened the blankets. He glanced at Aaron who was still latched onto Max. “What about you, little man?”

Aaron’s hold on Max’s neck tightened and he pressed his face against his shoulder.

“Guess that’s a no,” he said with a smirk.

“He’s okay,” Max said and shrugged. He figured he’d wait and see whether Aaron wanted to stay with Chase or be taken to Liz when he was ready to release his grip on his neck.

Michael nodded and gave Tess a sign to take over so he could check and see how Maria and Cody were doing.

She nodded and sat down next to Chase on the bed. “So, what about a short bedtime story again, huh?”

*****

Maria was lying on the bed next to Cody, quietly singing as she brushed her hand over his forehead. He was pressed into her side, tightly hugging Quackers and listening to her. He hadn’t completely relaxed yet; he was still scared to go back to sleep after his earlier episode.

The door to the bedroom was opened quietly as Michael stepped in. He walked over to them slowly and knelt down next to the bed, his eyes locked on hers. “Everything okay?” he mouthed.

She nodded. “He’ll be okay once he can relax.” She ran her hand over Cody’s hair. “He’s getting there, just takes some time.” Not that she was telling Michael anything he didn’t already know.

“What about you?”

She forced a smile. “I’m fine.”

“Want me to stay here?”

Maria bit her lips to keep from saying yes. As much as she wanted him to stay his girlfriend was somewhere in the house waiting for him. “No, it’s okay. You have someone to get back to.”

He sighed and looked down at Cody. The boy was okay for now, but he still felt guilty for leaving them alone. But on the other hand, Courtney was new here and he didn’t want her to get mad at him because he stayed with Maria.

She rolled her eyes slightly when she saw the doubts in him. “It’s okay Michael, really.”

He looked at her and then nodded. “Get me if he doesn’t go back to sleep, okay?”

She nodded even though she had no intention of doing that. “Thanks, CB.”

Cody shifted slightly and looked at Michael. He didn’t understand why Michael wasn’t staying. He never asked if they wanted him to stay, he just stayed. It was because of that girl that came with him, he was sure of it.

“Your sister will keep the bad dreams away,” he told the boy with a wink.

“Okay.” He rolled over and pressed his face against Quackers.

“Okay,” Michael repeated quietly and then forced himself to leave.

“How come Mike don’t like us like he used to?” he mumbled against the stuffed duck’s furry body.

“Don’t think that, Cody,” she whispered. “He’s just got a girlfriend now and we have to accept that we have to share him. Do you understand that?”

“No.” He didn’t want to understand it.

She sighed. “We can’t keep him all to ourselves.”

“We didn’t do that before,” he said with a shake of his head.

“Well, because he didn’t have a girlfriend then. But nobody wants to stay alone forever, right? We have to give him that much, little bro.”

He sighed. “It’s ‘cause of that girl an’ I don’t like her.”

“But he likes her.”

“Why?”

“You should ask him about that,” she chuckled and kissed his head. “Look, would you like it if Mom wouldn’t allow you to see your friends anymore just because she doesn’t like them?”

He frowned. “No,” he said slowly.

“See, so we can’t tell Michael to not see Courtney anymore. It would hurt him an’ we don’t want to hurt him, right?”

“No.” He rested his chin on Quackers and looked up at her. “But she don’t even like lizards, M’ria. She seened one today and she screamed.”

“Some people don’t like tiny little creeping animals, Cody. That’s normal.” Gosh, she hoped her brother would give up on Courtney, she really felt sick from polishing her image in her brother’s eyes.

“You don’t scream an’ Chase’s mommy don’t scream.” He giggled. “Izzy screams really loud.”

“Yeah, see, but Izzy’s cool, isn’t she?”

“Oh.” He thought about that for a minute. “Yeah.”

Maria looked up when Tony appeared in the slightly open door. She smiled and nodded when he glanced at her questioningly.

“Hey, little man, how’re you doin’?” he asked as he shouldered into the room.

Cody turned slightly to look at their new guest. “I’m okay.”

“Yeah? Havin’ trouble getting back to sleep?”

“I don’t want the bad dreams to come back,” he told him and squeezed his stuffed animal.

“I can understand that,” Tony said as he sat down close to the little boy. “Bad dreams can be pretty scary.”

“Yeah,” Cody agreed and reached out to touch Tony’s slight facial hair. “That’s scratchy.”

He chuckled. “That a bad thing?”

The boy checked with Maria. “Is it?”

She chuckled. “No it’s not. It fits him, don’t you think?”

Cody rubbed his palm over the man’s stubbled skin again. “Yeah.” He rubbed his hands over his own face. “When do I get face hair?”

“That’ll still take a long, long while,” Maria said, amused.

“That’s a long time.” He looked at his sister. “How come girls don’t get no face hair?”

Tony laughed. “Thank God they don’t.”

“We just don’t,” Maria said.

“But girls got hair on their legs sometimes an’ Mike said he knew some girl who had hairy pits. He said that means she had hair under here,” he said and raised his right arm to point.

“Everyone has hair there, boys and girls,” Maria said. She took his hand slightly to lower his arm again. “How about you try to sleep now, huh?” She bumped her nose against his.

“Okay.” He wiggled around to get comfortable. “Mike said it’s gross though.”

Maria glanced at Tony and rolled her eyes in amusement before she looked down at her brother again and ran her hand up and down his back to make him tired again.

“Won’t take long,” he said with a wink. “He’s already almost there.”

“Good,” she whispered. “Because I can’t feel the left side of my body anymore.”

He chuckled. “I can imagine.” He sobered as he looked at Cody again. “That had to be pretty scary for both of you.”

She just nodded and looked down at her brother. It had been more than scary and she didn’t want to experience it again anytime soon.

Cody went off to sleep pretty fast and after a few more minutes Maria was sure he wouldn’t wake up when she moved. “Okay,” she whispered, “can you help me up?”

Tony stood and carefully moved Cody before walking around the bed to take her hands and pull her to her feet. “Think he’ll sleep through the night?” he asked, watching her as she shook the pins and needles out of her left arm.

“I hope so,” she took the baby monitor from her nightstand and checked it to make sure it was turned on.

“Feel like walking down to the beach? Get outta the house for a bit and get some fresh air?”

“Fresh air sounds good,” she agreed. “Let’s stay on the deck though, I don’t want him to wake up and be alone again.” Her room was close to the deck so as soon as she heard a sign of him waking up she could be there quickly.

“Want somethin’ to drink?”

“Maybe just water,” she said and checked on her brother once more before they left the room quietly.

“Okay, water it is.” He nodded at the doorway up ahead. “You go on outside and I’ll grab the drinks.”

She nodded thankfully and walked outside slowly. Her body was still in a shock after the earlier scare and right now it all felt unreal to her. It was almost as if she was looking at herself from a different angle, like when you were watching a bad movie.

Tony grabbed a bottle of water for Maria and a beer for himself before heading outside. He paused at the door, watching her for a moment before he broke the silence. “Does Cody have spells like that very often?” he asked quietly as he joined her.

She didn’t turn around and kept her gaze on the ocean while she was sitting on the steps that led down to the beach. “No, this was the first time.”

He sat on the step behind her, bringing his arm around her to offer her the bottle of water. “Scared you pretty good.”

“Yeah,” she said hoarsely and took the water to take a sip. Maybe it would help to get rid of the tightness in her throat.

He set his beer aside and ran his hands over her upper arms for a moment before they settled on her shoulders. “He’s okay, Maria. Panic attacks happen, sometimes for no good reason at all.”

“But he’s not okay in the end,” she denied and let her head drop forward. “Every passing day for the last four years his heart has gotten a little bit weaker and the doctor’s are making it pretty clear that time is running against us now.”

“Hey, c’mere,” he murmured as he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into his chest. “I know how grim the reality of the situation is and every once in a while you get pulled in and give in to that, but the most important thing is to keep the faith, girl.”

“I can’t lose him,” she said quietly and shed a few silent tears, not really paying attention to what Tony was saying, but taking comfort from his touch.

“Maria, girl, don’t let yourself think of that possibility. Yeah, it’s one outcome but don’t lose sight of that other possible outcome. If you’re gonna expend the energy, use it on the positive thoughts.”

“It’s hard to do that. Nothing good has happened lately,” she said in frustration and wiped her tears away. The fact that Courtney had gotten the cover that she’d had such a good feeling about was just one more thing to add to the list of sucky things.

“Nothin’ good?” he echoed. “Cody’s still fightin’ like the little champ he is, you’re sittin’ out on the deck of a pretty amazing beach house with the hottest guy on the beach...” he shook her slightly. “C’mon, that’s a couple good things right there.”

She snorted but there was also a slight hint of amusement in her voice. “I don’t think Cody fighting is a good thing. He should be a happy little guy who should be able to run around and wear himself out like normal kids…” She lifted her chin to look up at him. “And about that hot guy… well I can’t argue with that.”

He grinned. “Okay, score one point for me.”

“Not that I’m really getting anything out of that. Well… ya know what I mean.” How did she always end up with the hottest guys being just her friends? she wondered.

“Well... you could,” he said with a teasing smile.

And one part of her wanted to, but it suddenly wasn’t enough anymore. Did that have something to do with Michael? Maybe now that he suddenly had someone to spend time with… What if she had never had a real boyfriend because Michael had always been there to occupy her and now that he was distracted she was finally noticing how lonely she was without him?

“Yeah, I know. Two of the hottest people on the beach and we’re destined to just be friends.”

“I think we’re the only ones on the beach now, Tony,” she teased.

“Maybe.”

“Yeah, friends… and it’s all your fault,” she accused with a smile.

“How is that my fault? I’m a guy... I’m pretty much ready to go at the drop of a hat.”

“But you want casual and I think I’ve finally decide to look for steady,” she said. “Wow, that sounds weird.”

“Still not my fault,” he denied.

Why couldn’t he want more? she wondered, but dropped the thought again. It was ridiculous to think that it would work out because in the end they didn’t even know each other very well yet and she was just impatient to have someone at her side. “Whatever,” she dismissed him gently.

“Okay, so we’re just gonna be friends. I suppose I can make the sacrifice.” He sighed dramatically. “Although you don’t know what you’re missin’.”

“Oh, well, never say never, maybe one night when you’re not counting on it I’ll be there, naked in your bed,” she laughed, imagining his face.

He snorted. “Are you tryin’ to kill me?”

“Nah, not killing…”

“Easy for you to say.”

“Where do you live?”

“Queens.”

“Queens? Wow, I thought you’d be somewhere in Manhattan,” she said, surprised. “Queens is nice though. Much quieter.”

He chuckled. “It has its moments. Guess we’ll have to have a party at my place one of these days.”

“Yeah, and then you an’ me are goin’ out to look for the King of Queens.”

“Think we’ll find him?”

“Hopefully. If Carrie hasn’t sent him to a fat farm yet.”

He snorted and shook his head. “No way that’s happened.”

“Yeah, wouldn’t be him without the extra pound on his hips,” she giggled.

“Yeah, I like a guy with some weight,” he said, making her laugh harder.

She turned slightly to pinch his stomach with her index finger and thumb. “Hmm, I think you have nothing to worry about yet.”

“Not yet. Gotta wait until I’m married and got a couple kids before I let that happen.”

Maria liked that he was openly admitting that he wanted a marriage and kids. Most guys with his looks didn’t even think about it. “I have a feeling the woman who finally puts a ring on your finger will be very happy in the end,” she said and pointed at his ring finger on his left hand.

“I like to think so.”

She was quiet for a minute, her thoughts far away as she stared out over the ocean. “Tony, do you wonder sometimes where we’ll be in like five years?”

Post by Double Trouble »

CandyliciousLovah: Lol, well, only in a hypothetical manner. Yeah, the poor little guy just can’t catch a break.

Natalie36: Maria’s situation is going to get worse before it gets better.

Earth2Mama: Yeah, those kinds of dreams suck!

Yup, Maria’s figuring out that she wants more than she’s allowed herself to have in the past… now there’s just the little issue of the right guy being currently unavailable.

mary mary: Hmm… Tony will find his Miss Right in time.

Alien_Friend: Lol, yeah, let’s hope it doesn’t take them five years to figure things out.

Excellent idea, lol, let’s blame it on Michael! Tony is going to be good for Maria in the near future.

It is… it’s sooo wrong!

That is a terrible position to be in, and how can that family not hope and pray for what’s needed to extend his life?

keepsmiling7: Max does do a great job with Aaron and that little guy just loves him. Liz will get there.

sarammlover: Oh, they’re going to continue to drive you crazy for a while! Lol, well, we do have someone in mind for Tony. Kyle and Tess may dance around each other for a while, so be prepared. We’ll see more Max and Liz in next week’s part. Glad you’re loving all of them!

begonia9508: Panic attacks are a terrible thing and for someone so young it would have to be terrifying!

Lol, another vote for placing the blame on Michael, huh?

xilaj: This group will do what’s necessary to get things moving for the girls and Aaron.

Michael is a man confident in his profession. Maria’s in a tough position and having a younger brother who’s ill has sort of taken center stage in her life.

Oh, we’ll see just how long Liz can resist. Aaron already loves Max and he’ll do his best to make his sister come to the same conclusion he has… that Max has to be part of their lives. A big part if Aaron has anything to say about it.

Part 67

It Takes Two To Tango

Had he ever wondered where he’d be in five years? “Sure. I mean, a million things could change in five years.”

“Yeah, that’s true.” She straightened up to take a sip of her water. “I mean, can you see any of us married, pregnant, or whatever? Somehow it feels like things haven’t really changed in the last few years, so why would they in a few more?” She shrugged. “Yeah, I mean, I know they will, I just can’t believe it.”

“Well, let’s see,” he mused and pretended to think about that. “Five years from now... Yep, I can see it. We’ve definitely got a couple possibilities in our group. I mean, Max and Liz, they’ll be together for sure. Kyle and Tess will probably still be antagonizing each other. Oh, and then we’ve got Isabel and Alex.” He grinned. “Yep, the two of them together and she’ll be the in the group who’s pregnant. With the nerd king’s baby, whatcha think?”

“I agree about Max and Liz, and Kyle and Tess, but Alex and Isabel? Really? Well, I guess stranger things have happened but somehow I can’t see them together yet.”

He laughed. “Just go with it. I don’t know how plausible it is either, but it makes for an amusing view of the future. Can you picture her saddled with the nerd king? Bet their kids would be little brainiacs.”

Maria laughed. “Yeah, beautiful little brainiacs,” she added. She looked at him for several long moments. “Okay, yeah, and you’re probably married with your first kid on its way. Your wife will probably be the cutest woman on earth.”

“I’m good with that. Just means our kids will be damn good lookin’.”

“Yeah, I picture a blonde with you. Short and just adorable. Ya know, with a kind of Reese Witherspoon cuteness.”

“Yeah?” He nodded after a moment. “Yeah, I can see that. Excellent choice.”

She chuckled. “It’s up to you.”

“Now I’ve just gotta find Ms. Perfect. Got any ideas?”

“Well, first of all you should get over your ex and well, then… I doubt it’s really gonna be a problem for you to find a woman. I’d look out for her in a little café other than Starbucks or maybe in Battery Park along the Hudson.”

“Good point. Definitely gotta get the ex outta my system.”

“Easier said than done, huh?”

“Yeah. Be easier if she hadn’t kept the damn dog.”

“You’ll get over her eventually and well, until then I bet you can distract yourself with a lot of other willing women, T-man.”

“Well, that’s true.” He grinned when she elbowed him. “What can I say? The ladies love firemen.”

“I’ve been hanging out with Guerin and Valenti way too long,” she snorted, “so believe me, I know that fact.”

“I think Guerin just gets the girls ‘cause he hangs out with the firemen. Our uniforms are so much cooler than the ones EMTs wear.”

“Whatever his tactics are, they’ve worked pretty well for him,” she made a face.

“The man does get around.”

“Ungh, yeah. He’s a male slut.”

“Well, I guess it’d be a waste of time to try to deny that.”

“So,” she poked his chest with her index finger, “don’t think I missed the fact that you left me out in your future pretention. So c’mon, hit me with it.”

“You... five years from now. Hmm, you really want my honest opinion on that?”

“Sure,” she nodded.

“I’d like to think you an’ Guerin have both gotten your heads outta your asses by then and you’re together.”

She groaned slightly and let her head fall back for a moment. “So you’re also a member of the ‘Maria and Michael are in love’ club?”

“Are you so sure we’re all wrong?” he countered.

“Obviously you are because Michael and I are just friends and in case it’s slipped your notice, he even has a girlfriend now.”

“Uh-huh,” his tone was bored. “And that doesn’t, I don’t know, bother you even in the slightest way?”

She shrugged and looked away. “It’s something I need to get used to,” she admitted. “I mean, he’s never kept any girl around for longer than a night and I’m used to having him around me pretty much all the time. I know that won’t continue while he has a girlfriend and I’m trying to accept that.”

“I think you two are so used to bein’ best friends and bein’ in each other’s back pockets all the time that you don’t see what’s right in front of you.”

“Don’t ya think one of us would’ve developed romantic feelings for the other by now if there was anything there?” she asked doubtfully. “Michael and I have spent countless nights in the same bed or whatever and there’s never been one of those moments, ya know… where you wonder.”

“You guys have been best friends since you were what, four or five years old? I think it’s there, it’s just buried under everything else.” He took a drink of his beer and sighed. “My only concern is that one of you, most likely you, is gonna figure it out first and because of the current situation, you’re setup to get hurt.”

Maria stared out at the ocean while she thought about what Tony had said. She suddenly snorted and looked at him. “Well, that’d just be at the top of my sucky list, ya know? Me developing feelings for him and having to watch him with Courtney all the time.”

“That would suck because for the moment he does seem to be tryin’ with her.”

“You think she could be right for him?” she asked uncertainly.

“She’s not you.” He shook his head when she looked at him. “Yeah, she’s nice, she’s attractive, and she appeals to him, but I don’t think she’s the right girl.”

“Cody doesn’t like her,” Maria said with a slight smirk.

“Neither does Chase.”

“I hope my brother isn’t too hurt when he can’t spend as much time with Michael as he’s used to. He won’t understand it.”

“He’s very attached to him but it’s apparent he can already feel the difference since Guerin’s gotten involved with Courtney.”

“Yeah,” she sighed sadly. “I’d hate it if my brother gets hurt even more.”

“For both your sakes I hope that doesn’t happen.” He didn’t really see a way around it though. The closer Michael and Courtney got the more distance it was likely to put between him and Maria and her family.

“Well, Cody seems to like you.” She tried to force her thoughts away from the possibility. “Maybe you can help me distract him as long as you’re getting over your ex.”

“I think that can be arranged.”

“Cool,” she smiled. “My brother will like that. And so do I.”

“Hey, Guerin might be cool, but I’m the one with the seahorse skeleton... and Cody seems to think that’s cooler than just about anything right now.”

“Oh, yeah, you really got him hooked with that one.”

“I found it a couple years back down in Virginia Beach. It was just lying in the sand, perfectly preserved. Too cool to just leave it there.”

“Yeah, definitely,” she glanced at the baby monitor when it made a little sound. “He’s sleeping a bit restlessly so I guess I’m gonna call it a night and join my brother.”

He nodded. “You need anything, you know where I am.”

“Think you’ll be able to sleep all alone tonight,” she teased and got up.

“You offerin’ to keep me company?”

“I would if my brother wasn’t in my bed,” she winked at him. “Snuggling up with big bear Tony was fun last night.”

He rolled his eyes and grinned. “Alright, I’ll suffer through the night all alone.”

She snorted and walked over to the glass doors. “G’night.” Maria pulled one side open to step in, but hesitated and turned to look at the man on deck again. “And Tony…”

He shifted to look at her. “Yeah?”

“Thanks. Ya know… for listening an’ all.”

He smiled. “Anytime. And I mean that, Maria.”

She felt a little better as she nodded and walked inside. It was good to have someone to talk to, especially now when Michael wasn’t available as often anymore. Her feet carried her over to her bathroom and she turned the lights on after closing the door so she wouldn’t disturb Cody.

I look like shit, she realized when she saw her pale face and the puffy eyes in the mirror over the sink, but instead of ignoring it and getting ready for bed, she stared herself down while her hands rested on the edge of the sink.

Michael and her; why did that always seem to come up? She had never really allowed her thoughts to wander to that option, maybe because she had been afraid that those thoughts could come true if she did.

But that was ridiculous. Thoughts couldn’t come true unless there was already some truth behind them, right?

Sleep wouldn’t come easy tonight, so what if she used the opportunity and allowed herself this one time to take her thoughts beyond the friendship level Michael and she insisted they had? Just to prove they were all wrong with their suggestions.

“Okay, this could be hard to imagine,” she muttered, but took a deep breath. Alright, why not just start? She closed her eyes for a moment while she tried to come up with a setting and decided to go with reality here.

She opened her eyes again and immediately felt herself being watched. Her gaze moved up just enough to meet Michael’s eyes in the mirror. He was standing at the door, his back resting against the frame lazily. He was bare from the waist up and his gaze was dark and heated, not a way he had ever looked at her.

He remained silent while he watched her, almost as if he was waiting for something. His eyes were darker than ever as they moved over her slowly for several long minutes before he pushed away from the door and took several steps in her direction.

The muscles of his upper body rippled slightly when he walked towards her, making her whole body shiver in anticipation of what was to come. She didn’t turn around when he stopped behind her and stared back at him though the mirror.

Wordlessly he brought his hands up to her hips, letting them slide up, brushing beneath the material of the top she wore to ghost over her sides.

Her eyes slipped shut at his touch, her concentration focused on his rough palms when they moved further inward to caress her belly.

“So soft,” he murmured gruffly, his breath gusting against the bare skin of her shoulder.

His breath felt hot, she thought and rolled her head to the other side to give him access to skin that was waiting for contact with his lips.

In deference to her wishes he pressed his lips to her skin. When she moaned softly he started to nibble along the line of her shoulder, following the path up her neck and settling at the sensitive spot just below her ear.

One of her hands slipped from the sink to settle over his where it rested on her hip. She squeezed it slightly and added pressure to show him what she wanted. As soon as his hands flexed on her and pulled her further against his lower body she groaned in agreement.

His arm slid around her waist, keeping her pressed against him. He smiled and used his free hand to cup her breast, palming the slight weight and letting his thumb rasp over the taut peak.

It was tempting to turn around and face him. What would it be like to be able to touch him like he was touching her? How would his skin feel against her fingertips? How would it feel to kiss him?

Michael relaxed his arm and let his fingertips trail along the waistband of the jean shorts that rode low on her hips. He toyed with the button each time he passed it, his touch teasing.

She straightened up from the sink, leaning her upper body against him and turned her head slightly to look at him for the first time since he had entered the room. Her gaze swept to his well-formed mouth and she bit her bottom lip when a small smirk appeared on his lips. A smirk so sexy it made her knees weak.

“Maybe it’s not so crazy, huh?”

She felt irritated at the way he spoke to her and after blinking again he was suddenly gone and she found herself alone in the bathroom again, still staring at herself in the mirror. Okay, that was a bit more intense than expected, she thought and turned the cold water on to splash it into her face.

The baby monitor next to her crackled. “M’ria?” She heard Cody’s quiet voice.

He was sitting up in bed, looking around for her and hugging his stuffed duck. “Where’d you go?” he asked when she came into the room.

“I was just in the bathroom,” she said and walked over to the bed. “Don’t worry, everything’s okay. I’m here with you and I’m not going away.”

“I’m not sleepy now. Can we watch a movie?”

“Uh-uh, no, sorry, buddy. It’s way too late for that and we need to rest. How about we snuggle?”

He sighed and nodded. “You can read a story?”

“I’m gonna tell a story, okay?” she asked and got up to change into something to sleep in. Her gaze dropped to a tee shirt lying on the floor and she picked it up. Wow it feels weird, she thought when she pulled it on with the knowledge that it had been Michael’s many years ago until she had stolen it from him.

Cody smiled. “What kinda story?”

“Hmm, let’s see,” she said and crawled into the bed next to him, straightening all the pillows and blankets before she pulled his small body against hers in a comfortable position. “It’s a story about a little prince,” she started, thankful for the distraction. Maybe it was a mistake to take my thoughts that far, she mused and then concentrated on her brother.

****

Courtney met her reflection in the mirror over the sink and she stared at herself for several long minutes. While she felt for Cody’s situation she was annoyed with the way Michael had just dropped everything to run check on him. There were other people at the house who were used to dealing with the little boy and his illness. She sighed and shook her head reproachfully. There were others, but he was an EMT, and didn’t that make him the most qualified? But wait, hadn’t someone said that his older sister was a nurse? So she would be just as qualified, and maybe even more qualified, to handle the situation.

But he jumped to the rescue at the slightest hint that something might be wrong with Cody. Or Maria. She couldn’t really blame him where the little boy was concerned, although she did feel that his involvement, with Maria especially, could become problematic. The more time she spent with them the more she could see just how close they were. “You’re over thinking this,” she muttered to her reflection. “They’re just friends, they’ve both said that.” But was it true? She hadn’t seen anything to indicate that they were, or had ever been, more than that.

“Just let it go,” she advised herself. “He’s an EMT, he’s helping a sick friend, and it’s not like you can fault him for that.” She gave it a moment and then nodded. She pointed her toothbrush at her reflection. “You’re right. That’s just the kinda guy he is.” She laughed quietly at her brief moment of insanity and finished getting ready for bed.

Feeling a little better she wandered out into the bedroom and stared thoughtfully at the bed. How long was she going to make him wait? She snorted and rolled her eyes at the outdated question. It wasn’t like he was the only one waiting. She heard footsteps and voices in the hall as she reached for the edge of the covers and flipped them back… and immediately let loose with a scream that she just barely managed to control by slapping her hands over her mouth.

She ran back several steps and jumped up to stand on one of the armchairs, her wide-eyed stare locked on the odd collection of bugs and two, no three green lizards and two brown lizards that were darting around on the sheets. Her gaze shot up when the door opened and Michael stared at her as if she’d lost her mind until she pointed at the bed.

Michael took stock of the situation and quickly identified the problem. It didn’t take a genius to come to the conclusion that the culprits were peacefully sleeping down the hall. “What’re you doin’?” he asked, amusement coloring his tone.

“What am I doin’?” she repeated stupidly. “The question is what those ugly little critters are doing in our bed.”

“They’re just bugs, Court,” he said as he scooped up a couple of grasshoppers, a cricket, and a small handful of roly polys. “Well, and a few lizards.” That were gonna be a little harder to catch, he thought as he walked over to the window and pushed it open to toss the bugs outside.

“They still have no place in our bed,” she said with a grimace.

“They’re just little lizards, they’re not gonna hurt you.” He made a grab for one and it darted out of reach. “Damn things are hard to catch.”

Courtney rolled her eyes and stood where she was. “I’m not gonna help you.”

“Ya know, you’ll make points with the little guys if you can hold a lizard.”

“I’d rather remain Mike’s unloved new girlfriend than touch one of those, Michael. Seriously, I hate everything smaller than a cat!”

“C’mon,” he said as he finally succeeded in catching a couple of the green ones, “it’s not that bad. Besides, as long as they know they’re gonna get you with shit like this they’ll continue to pull these stunts.”

“Well, you can just tell them in the morning that I touched one.”

“You haven’t spent much time with kids, have you?” he asked with a smirk.

“Well, no.”

“Um-hmm,” he made a grab for one of the small brown lizards and missed when it ran over the edge of the mattress. “Crap.” He dropped to his knees to chase after it. “You’re only gonna impress them if you actually manage to hold onto one of these things without looking like you’re about to puke or run off screaming.”

“I’m new to this group, Michael. So don’t expect me to know all the rules already,” she told him, a bit offended by his amusement.

“Ah, c’mon,” he said as he shuffled around to look at her, “it’s not a big deal.”

“Maybe it isn’t for you.”

“It’s just a little lizard. It’s not gonna bite you or anything. Just think of it as a very small cat... one of the ones with no hair.”

“Ungh, disgusting,” she wrapped her arms around herself. “I’m not touching any of them, so give it up and get them the hell outta here.”

He crawled over to her, lizard in hand. “You can just give it a shot.”

“Ewww,” she walked further away, as much as the armchair allowed. “I mean it, Michael, get away with it.”

Michael shook his head and looked down at the lizard looking up at them from the cell of his fist. “How can you resist this little fella?”

She turned her head away from him and the creature, arms crossed over her chest wordlessly.

“Looks like you’re outta luck, buddy,” he said as he got to his feet and carried it over to lean out the window and release it.

“There’s still another one you missed earlier,” she reminded him when he was about to get ready for bed.

“I lost sight of that last one but it won’t bother us. Trust me, they’re a lot more scared of you than you are of them.”

Courtney shook her head. “I am not sleeping in the same room with it.”

“I could spend the rest of the night lookin’ for it and not find it.”

She glanced around the room for several moments and wasn’t able to locate the little ugly critter either. “That’s just great,” she muttered and climbed down from the armchair.

“It’s not like its Godzilla and it’s gonna come pounding through the room breathing fire.” He really didn’t get what the big deal was. Even Isabel could handle picking up a stupid lizard – not that she let most people know that. Of course, she’d grown up with two brothers, so that could have made a big difference.

“You wouldn’t understand,” she said and crawled into bed after making sure there was nothing alive left in it. She tugged the edges of the blankets around her body so that nothing could creep in.

He smirked at her actions and shook his head. “Not leavin’ room in there for anything are you?”

“Sure as hell not.”

He shook his head and reached back to grab the back of his tee shirt and pull it off. “They’re little boys pulling pranks because they don’t know you.”

“Tomorrow we’ll go back anyway, so I’m not worried about them.”

“Yeah, but they’re a big part of my life.”

She sighed and sat up. “Michael, don’t make this a big deal, okay? I don’t like those little things and nothing will change that, end of story. Is it so important?”

He shrugged. “No, just sayin’ the boys are gonna keep doin’ shit like this.”

“Then I guess I’ll have to live with it. I doubt they’d stop if I touched one of those lizards. Little boys just don’t stop.”

“No, but if they figure out that stuff like that gets a rise out of you they’ll keep it up.” He chuckled. “My brother was awesome at stunts like this. One time when he was, I don’t know, around 12 I guess, he caught a skunk and turned it loose on this teacher he hated.”

“Seems like that’s just in the Guerin-genes, huh?”

He shrugged one shoulder. He knew Cody was the ringleader of tonight’s prank but there was no reason to point that out. “Matt knew how to pull a prank.” He walked into the bathroom to grab his toothbrush. “You know, you’re new to the group and they’re not used to me bringin’ a girl around so they’re gonna test you until they decide they like you.”

Yeah, hopefully they’ll like me eventually, she thought.

He stuck his head out to look at her when she didn’t respond. “Look, they’ll get there. Just give it some time.”

“I will,” she agreed and rolled onto her side, facing him. “As long as you like me, I’m okay.”

“Then we’re good ‘cause I like you.” He grinned at her around his toothbrush. “I can promise you I won’t be puttin’ any critters in your bed.”

“You better not,” she snorted. Not if he wanted sex anytime soon.

“Maybe just the one-eyed snake,” he mumbled with a smirk.

“Of course you would say that.”

“Will it get me in bed with you?”

“It’s your bed.”

“Guess that’s a yes.”

“Shut up an’ hurry, Guerin,” she shook her head, amused with him.

He finished up and stripped out of his jeans before running across the room and pouncing on the bed.

“Hey!” she complained.

He laughed. “Doesn’t matter how old we get, there’s still a lot of little boy left in us.”

“I see,” she laughed.

mary mary: Lol, good memory! Glad we made ya laugh!

begonia9508: Thanks!

So true, a friendship that’s been there most of their lives is a lot to risk.

No, the boys have sided with Maria even though it’s not really a battle. Yet, anyway, lol.

Lol, no, just a fantasy.

CandyliciousLovah: Yeah, apparently she’s not a big fan of lizards.

Well, they’ll both see… in time. ;)

Natalie36: Lol, boys!

keepsmiling7: Maybe just a bit. ;)

Earth2Mama: So true! We’ve got one of them thinking.

Alien_Friend: Hmm… could be.

We love Tony. He’s a great guy!

Yeah, this fantasy business could make things difficult for Maria.

Lol, there’s a very good chance he’ll look back on that night at some point.

Crybaby001: That’s a lot of reading! That’s okay, there’s no need to hate on Courtney. The boys will do that for you, lol!

Wow, thanks! We’ll be seeing more Alex and Isabel soon.

Part 68

Toppling Protection Walls

Michael stretched out, keeping the bulk of his weight off of Courtney as he propped his chin in his hand and studied her. “Have you enjoyed the weekend?”

“Yeah. It’s nice out here.”

“So in spite of naked initiations and lizards in the bed you’d do it again?”

“Sure. Your friends and family are a cool bunch. A bit weird sometimes, but all in all I think you all fit together.”

He laughed at that. “Yeah, I guess that’s an accurate description.” His gaze wandered over her as he wondered how long she was gonna make him wait. “I’ve got a pretty full schedule when we get back but maybe we can get together for dinner or somethin’ on Wednesday?”

She made a face. “Full schedule, huh?”

“Yeah, always is after a long weekend.”

“Then I guess dinner on Wednesday sounds great.”

“We could stay in and I could throw somethin’ together.”

“Sure, why not? I’ve never been to your apartment yet.”

“Right. Well, we could always stay over at your place. I mean, you don’t have a roommate.”

“True, but my apartment’s not really that great either.”

He shrugged. “I can get rid of Kyle for a while then.”

She smirked. “Sounds like a plan. I can make something for dessert and bring it with me.”

“Dessert, huh? Any chance that’s just another way of sayin’ sexy underwear?”

“Wait an’ see,” she said mysteriously.

He growled low in his throat. “Come on, Wednesday.”

Her eyes wandered further south and she reached out to tug him on his boxers. “Hey, the weekend’s not over yet.”

He lowered his gaze to focus on her fingers and his breath caught in his throat. Was she saying...? “Yeah?”

“So why don’t ya come closer?”

He shifted to comply and lowered his head to kiss her.

Would she ever get used to the feeling of him kissing her, she wondered as her stomach made a twist. His lips were so soft, it was incredible.

Michael’s right hand slid up to her side, using his thumb to nudge her top out of his way so his palm could settle against her skin.

She laughed against his lips when he cursed about the blanket that was still tucked around most of her body. “Annoyed?”

“Well, what the hell did you do, wrap up in this thing? You’re wrapped up like a friggin’ mummy.”

“That’s just for protection.”

He snorted. “So’re condoms.”

“Bug-protection,” she reminded him. “But well, if ya ask nicely, I might let you come under it with me.”

Ask nicely? Really? “Courtney,” he murmured, his voice dropping low, “will you let me get under the covers with you?”

A shiver ran down your spine and she rolled to the side slightly to loosen the blanket around her. “Think I will.”

“Any chance we could just get rid of the blanket?” All of this over a stupid lizard, he thought. He was gonna have to have a talk with the boys tomorrow.

She shook her head. “Nope. You gotta come in.”

“Guess a guy’s gotta do what a guy’s gotta do.” He wiggled around to work his way under the covers.

“Don’t expect me to be sorry,” she giggled and tugged the blanket back around both of them.

He snorted. “Don’t complain when it gets hot then.”

“I like hot,” she teased and spread her legs slightly so he could get more comfortable between them.

“Hell yeah,” he growled as he settled against her, “me too.”

“Um-hmm, I can feel that,” she teased when she could feel his hard length pressing against her.

He rolled his hips and nodded. “You could be feelin’ a lot more.”

“Not giving up, are you?” She winked at him.

“Uh, no, not in this lifetime.”

She nodded slowly and bit her lip while she thought about it again. “Do you have condoms here?”

His heart thumped against the wall of his chest as he nodded dumbly.

“Okay,” she whispered softly.

“Yeah?” He didn’t wanna talk her out of it but he wanted her to be sure.

She nodded. “It’s obviously important to you an’ it’s not like I ever didn’t want it as well. I just don’t want it to be… ya know, just sex.”

“Well, yeah, it’s important to me. Sex is important to everyone.” It was, wasn’t it? He blew that thought off. Of course it was. “But it’s not just me here so if you’re not ready or you’re not sure...” Stupid! his brain screamed at him.

“I’m ready, if you tell me it’s not only about sex with me.”

He considered what she was asking of him. “Haven’t I been doin’ that?”

She shrugged. “Couldn’t hurt to hear it again.”

“Okay, well,” he shifted uncomfortably. He wasn’t used to talking about stuff like this. “It’s not just about sex.”

Courtney looked into his eyes for several long seconds and then nodded slightly. “Okay, I believe you, Michael Guerin.”

“Really?” He shook his head. “You know what I mean.”

She brought one hand up to his cheek and kissed the tip of his nose. “I guess I have to trust you, right?”

He nodded silently. It was more than sex, he reminded himself. He had his own doubts but he didn’t want to voice them. He had never hung around after getting what he wanted from girls. Well, in all fairness, it was what both parties wanted, but the point was he had never stuck around afterwards. He had no idea what would happen after they had sex. What if he lost interest in her? He studied er features for a moment, trying to imagine his interest fading. Nah, he decided, she was cool and they had fun even when they weren’t having sex. This would be okay. He was just over thinking. And what the hell was he doing, thinking so much when she had just said yes to sex?!

“Should I be worried about the look on your face?”

“No,” he said with a shake of his head.

Her fingers ran down his chest and outlined the muscles there. It would be really hard to let him go if things didn’t work out, she thought.

He started to ask what she was thinking but decided it didn’t really matter at the moment. He didn’t want to get into some long, drawn-out conversation about anything.

“Maybe you should get the condoms first?” she asked. “Ya know, before we really get started.”

“Kinda hate to leave where I’m at but I guess if I don’t go get them this’s about as far as we’re gonna go, so...” He kissed her before getting out of bed to go and get the condoms.

She looked after him when he disappeared into the bathroom and then sat up to get rid of the tank top she was wearing before she lay down again.

Michael grabbed the box and pulled one of the packets out on his way back to the bedroom. He tossed the box on the nightstand and grinned at her pointed look. “What? I’m an optimist,” he said as he tossed the packet to her.

“Uh-huh,” she rolled her eyes but smiled and moved around to make more room for him in the bed again.

He slid under the covers and resumed his former position. “Hello,” he muttered when his skin slid against hers from the waist up. “Okay, blanket’s gonna have to go at least for a while ‘cause I’m a guy and I’m very visual.”

“Well, okay, but just for now.”

“I’m good with now.”

She smirked and let her hand wander over the big bulge in his boxer, enjoying his reaction when he hissed.

“Not fair.” He tossed the covers back and his hand played over every inch of skin he could reach. “God, look at you,” he whispered. He palmed her breast in his hand and teased the nipple with his thumb.

She felt sexier than ever under his gaze and enjoyed it. “’s all yours.”

“All mine,” he repeated and ran his tongue over her nipple. He leaned back just enough to blow on it, watching her squirm in reaction.

“Michael,” she complained but it was more a moan than a real complaint.

He smirked and repeated the move on her other breast as one hand slid down to tease the lacey edge of her panties. He let his fingers follow it around her leg until he reached her heated center.

His touches set her on fire so that it was hard to breathe regularly. She concentrated on her own touches on his body and slipped one hand inside his boxers by sliding it along his thigh, using her fingernails to gently run over him.

Michael’s hand paused at the sensation and his eyes rolled back for a moment. Yeah, keep that up, he thought. Maybe just a little pressure.

“You like that?” she whispered in his ear playfully and grabbed him with her full hand.

He made a sound that was completely unintelligible.

She chuckled. “I’ll take that as a yes.”

He forced his fingers to remember what he was supposed to be doing. He brushed his fingertips against her center before slipping them below the material.

She groaned slightly but got sidetracked when she felt another tickling touch on her feet. “Michael, what’re you…” she giggled and raised her head, only to see that the little missing lizard was sitting right next to her foot in the bed. “Ewwww.”

That got his attention. “What?”

Her finger pointed at the little creepy thing furiously. “Get it,” she hissed.

Michael turned his head and frowned when he saw the elusive lizard. “Damn it,” he muttered. “Alright, hold on a minute and don’t lose our place.”

“Hurry,” she rushed him.

“Okay, move too fast and it’ll get away again so hold on a sec.”

She just stayed where she was and didn’t move an inch while he took care of the situation. Hopefully this time he would be successful.

Michael moved cautiously, creeping up on the lizard. He froze when it started to move and he winced when it moved closer to her foot. “You’re gonna have to be still,” he said, his voice barely audible.

“I am still,” she hissed back.

“Yeah, but it’s about to crawl on your foot and if you move it’s gonna run.”

“Just gee it, Michael,” she begged.

“It’s gonna be easier to grab it if it’s on your foot.” Yeah, that was gonna go over well.

“No way will you let it get on my foot, do you hear me?”

“Be easier to catch it that way.” He nodded at the glare he could feel burning into the back of his head. “But of course, I won’t let it get on your foot.” He crouched close to the tiny reptile. “You do know you’re fuckin’ with my sex life here, right? So that means you’re gonna have to go.”

Courtney snorted slightly at that and sighed in relief when Michael sprang up from the bed and held the tiny animal in his hand triumphantly. “Ha!”

He smirked as he looked at her. “See?” He carried it over to the window and leaned out to release it. He frowned when he saw the shadowy figure standing down near the water. What was going on with Kyle? He shook it off and closed the window. He could always catch up with Kyle later. He was a guy, he’d understand.

“What’s wrong?” she asked when his features changed for a moment. “Oh my god, did it slip in again?”

“Nah, it’s gone.”

“Then why were ya looking so worried?”

“Just saw Kyle,” he said with a shrug.

“Kyle?” She frowned and came up on her knees on the bed to look out the window. “What’s wrong with him?”

“I don’t know. Something’s been buggin’ him all weekend but he’s keepin’ it close.”

“Think it has something to do with Maria?” She had just overheard that they kinda had something going on and then ended it recently.

“Nah, I doubt it.”

“Well, it could be,” she said. “She was flirting with Tony pretty openly this weekend, so maybe it bothers him?”

“Yeah, but Maria an’ Kyle, they’re not... they don’t like have those kinds of feelings for each other.”

“Maybe they just thought they didn’t have…”

He shook his head. “I don’t think so.”

“You wanna go and talk to him?” she asked, resting her hands on his shoulders when he stood at the foot of the bed.

“No, I can... I can talk to him later.”

“You sure?” She checked on him and looked into his eyes.

He nodded. “Positive.”

“Okay,” she smiled and let her hand wander downwards. “Where’d we stop?”

“We were getting naked and getting down to business,” he said, nudging her backwards.

“Oh, right,” she teased and let herself fall back on the mattress.

He pounced and landed over her on his hands and knees. “Glad to see you remembered.”

“I have a good memory,” she laughed and propped up on her elbows to bring their faces closer. “You are so damn sexy, Guerin.”

“We’re a good match then.”

*****

Liz woke as the sun was creeping over the horizon. She got up and walked over to the windows to look out at the ocean, her eyes watering as the sunlight bounced off of the water in spots and nearly blinded her. She checked on Aaron before going to take a shower, enjoying the chance to indulge in taking her time. The weekend had been something they had needed so badly and as much as she wished she could avoid going home she knew she couldn’t put it off indefinitely.

Her thoughts wandered to Max and his offer. His rather insistent offer, she thought with an internal roll of her eyes. She had no doubt that he meant well, but the truth was they didn’t know each other well enough to take a step like that. He got along with Aaron well enough, and her brother worshipped the ground Max walked on, but that wasn’t enough. Max was pushing her to get out of the situation she was in and she wished she could make him understand that she wasn’t refusing because she just loved living with Trent.

She and Max had spent such a short time together before she had admittedly left him for reasons that looking back now, had been shortsighted. How different would things have turned out if she had stuck around and just asked him about it? She had just made the assumption that he wasn’t interested in having a child without ever giving him the chance to explain. They couldn’t change the past, she mused as she toweled off. All they could do was find a way to move forward. He had made his intentions clear, had been upfront and told her that he wanted to try a relationship and see what happened.

There was so much about him that she didn’t know. He was secretive and he didn’t like to talk about himself. She plugged the hair dryer in and turned it on as she contemplated that little fact. He was an enigma. He was wounded and scarred, body and soul, but he wouldn’t answer questions about how it had happened. That night they had spent together she had asked about the scars surrounded by tattoos but he had continuously found ways to distract her. He knew significantly more about her than she knew about him and if he wanted to move forward he was going to have to open up.

She finished getting ready, dressing in a comfortably worn pair of jeans and a tank top and checking on Aaron once more before going in search of Max. He was up, probably sitting on the deck contemplating whatever it was he spent so much time thinking about. She stopped in the kitchen to fill a mug with coffee, stirring sugar into it and cradling it in one hand as she made her way outside.

Max glanced up, breaking his stare at the ocean to look at Liz when she stepped out onto the deck. “Mornin’,” he mumbled before turning his gaze back to the water. He wasn’t sure what to say to her. He was chasing his tail trying to get her to see reason and while he had no intention of giving up on that, he had decided maybe it was time to regroup.

“You’re up early,” she said and took a seat in the swing.

He shrugged. “I don’t sleep much.”

“Why is that?” she asked when he offered the perfect opening to what she wanted to talk about.

Damn, why couldn’t he have just said something else? “Insomnia, I guess.”

“Yeah, I suffered from insomnia a lot after my parents died,” she said, hoping it would make him more open to the subject if she mentioned she’d those problems as well.

Max shifted uncomfortably. He wanted her to be open and if they were going to ever get out of this stalemate they were in he was going to have to give her something. “That’s why you have custody of Aaron,” he mused aloud.

She just now realized what she had revealed to him. Damn, now she was giving him even more while he continued to remain a mystery. “Yeah.”

His right eyebrow lifted as he turned his head to look at her. “That’s why you were in the grief meetings when we met.”

“Yeah, it happened a few weeks before that,” she admitted. All she knew was that he had been in Iraq at some point in his life and he had lost a friend, but that couldn’t be the only reason why he was like he was, right?

“Sorry. Aaron was what, two at the time?”

“Yeah,” she sighed, remembering that time. “Ya know the good thing is he wasn’t old enough to know what was going on.”

Max leaned his head back and closed his eyes. “Yeah, not bein’ able to remember can be a good thing.”

“Speaking of your own experience?”

He shrugged one shoulder. “Don’t we all have at least one thing we’d like to forget?”

“Sure,” she nodded, “but most of those things aren’t traumatic.”

“No, I guess not.”

“So… what keeps you up nights, Max?”

“I don’t...” he trailed off. Lying was pointless because she’d see right through it. “The past.”

She snorted at his answer because it was as much as he could’ve said without really answering.

His head snapped up and he glared at her. “What?”

“The past?” she echoed his words. “Really, Max, that’s your answer?”

“What do you want from me, Liz?” His frustration poured through in his voice.

“Maybe some answers?” she snapped. “You expect me to give my whole life up and move in with you, but I don’t know anything about you.”

“What do you want to know, Liz?” he growled. “I was in Iraq, I carried a weapon, I killed people, and people I knew died right beside me! What the hell else is there?” His throat felt like he’d just swallowed a mouthful of broken glass after saying those words.

“Well, that was more than I knew before today,” she stuttered.

“And I’ll bet that really makes you wanna give me the time of day now, doesn’t it?”

“Grow up, Max,” she grumbled and rolled her eyes at his cynical words. She stood to walk down to the beach, placing her empty coffee cup on the steps.

He shoved himself to his feet and followed her, catching up to her down by the water. He grabbed her arm and pulled her around to look at him. “You wanna explain that?”

Her glance wandered from his tight grip on her arm to his face and back again. “Let me go,” she said firmly. His grip wasn’t hard enough to hurt, but she rubbed the skin there anyway when he released her. “You can’t expect people to be all open and comfortable with you when you prefer to be a mysterious grumbling bullhead.”

“Yeah, because you’ve been an open fuckin’ book this whole time!”

“More open than you at least.”

He sighed and shoved his hands in his pockets as he squinted against the sun's rays. “I was on the ground in Iraq when I was 18 and no, that doesn’t make me unique, but it changed me.” Hell, was there anyone there it hadn’t changed?

“Did you go there of your own free will, or…”

“Yes and no.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I got busted for armed robbery at 17.” He shook his head when she stared at him. “I wasn’t part of the robbery, didn’t even know it was gonna happen, but I drove the car after my friends committed the robbery so that made me an accessory. My dad got me a lawyer, worked with him, and came up with the idea that I’d testify against my friends and join the army to get the charges dropped. So, no, it what it boils down to is it wasn’t completely against my will.”

“What was the other option? Jail?”

“If I hadn’t taken that deal, yeah, I would’ve been charged as an accessory and I would’ve served time.”

“That was a tough deal,” she admitted quietly when they both sat down in the sand. “Neither option sounds very intriguing.”

“The options sucked but I sure as hell didn’t wanna go to prison.” He sighed and dragged his fingers through the sand. “Sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice because I close my eyes at night and I see things that happened over there, things I can’t forget, and I know if I sleep I’ll be right back there.”

Cardinal: Max did just take a major leap. We don’t think Liz is gonna be that type. She’s got enough on her plate right now.

Lol, poor Maria… let’s hope not.

CandyliciousLovah: Thanks for reading!

keepsmiling7: Michael definitely reads between the lines.

Yes, the weekend was a good escape for all of them.

Max and Liz are starting off on a good foot with this conversation.

sarammlover: Lol, well, you were spared that particular agony. ;) We’ll see a bit more with Max and Liz this weekend.

Natalie36: That sounds like hope…

Earth2Mama: Lol!

True, time will tell and we’ll see a bit more with both couples in this update.

mary mary: There are some issues to be dealt with but after this weekend at least many of them have been brought to light. Courtney certainly has every right to hold out until she feels the time is right. As for what Michael wants… we’re not sure that even he really knows at this point.

What Max has been through definitely changed him and he still has things to deal with, from his time in the service and from before that. It’s probably difficult to really say with any accuracy which situation would be worse. Max has a tendency to internalize and try to deal with things on his own and we’ll see if/how that changes as his relationship with Liz and Aaron changes.

Nope, Michael didn’t choose his buddy over his girlfriend.

xilaj: The conversation does indeed carry over into this next part. Max has taken a big step just talking to Liz and giving up information he guards very closely… and we’ll see why he does in this part.

Kyle will talk to someone… in time.

begonia9508: Max’s time in the military during the war changed him and it left its mark on him but he will eventually find peace with his past.

He would be an improvement for Liz and Aaron… could they try a relationship and remain friends if things didn’t work out? It’s hard to say.

Alien_Friend: Well, they didn’t stop them for long… lol

Max and Liz are taking baby steps in the right direction today. ;)

We hope your RL will slow down soon again, but we know all too good how things can get in the way.

Part 69

Live Through a Change

“Do the others know about it?”

He shook his head. “No, I don’t talk about it.”

“Maybe that’s the problem, huh?” She gave him a slight bump with her body.

He smiled tightly. “People have a funny way of pulling away when they learn you were discharged from the military because what you saw scrambled your brains.”

“You think they would?” Liz asked. She didn’t know the others very well yet and yes, they did come across as totally uncaring about things at times, but she had learned that this group looked after each other.

“I’ve seen the looks. I’ll admit I was a wreck when I was discharged and tryin’ to find a job was a nightmare. You get a medical discharge and they assume there’s somethin’ wrong with you, like maybe you’re just gonna snap one day and come to work with a gun.” He rubbed his knuckles against his jaw. “I don’t know, this group here, they’re not exactly like everyone else, but why risk it?”

“Not telling anyone is always like living and hiding who you are,” she shrugged. “Yeah, I know, I’m not much better, but at least I think I’ve made good progress this weekend.”

“I’m not a head case, Liz.”

“I didn’t say you were, did I?”

“No, I just don’t want you to worry about Aaron bein’ around me or think that I’m gonna flip out on you or anything.”

“You’re probably more worried about that than I am, Max.”

“What? No, I’m not worried about it,” he denied.

She didn’t believe him but dropped the subject. “Even better then.”

“So what happens now?”

“I don’t know.”

He fell back on the sand and stared up at the sky, sighing loudly. “Tell me what to do, Liz.”

“This won’t be solved in a weekend, Max,” Liz said throwing a handful of sand at him. “You’ve gotta be patient.”

He caught her hand and pulled her over so her upper body rested against his. “It kills me to think of you an’ Aaron livin’ with that bastard. Especially after last night, ‘cause he’s gonna be more of a dick now.”

“I don’t think that’s possible,” she said dryly. She was afraid he was right though. Trent wouldn’t just go on as normal after last night and she had no clue what he was going to do.

“Don’t go back there.”

“Max…”

“He could hurt you or Aaron.” He brushed her hair back over her ear. “I don’t wanna see that happen.”

“He’s an ass, but he’s never been abusive.”

“All it takes is once, Liz. I just wish you’d consider...” he nodded and dropped it when she shook her head at him. “Okay, so, if we’re not gonna talk about that, maybe you’ll agree to go out with me? You can pick the night since I don’t know your schedule.” He shrugged. “Or maybe an afternoon date, we could take Aaron out to the park or the zoo or somethin’?”

A date? she wondered. Would that be a good idea? But how else would they get to know each other any better? “Okay.”

“Really? You’re actually sayin’ yes?” He smiled easily and wrapped his arms around her. He glanced up at the sky. “Huh, look at that,” he mused aloud. “The sky didn’t fall or anything.”

“Shut up, Max,” she said with the slightest hint of amusement.

“That a smile tryin’ to break free?” He brought one hand up to lift her chin. “Yep, it’s definitely tryin’ to make an escape.”

“No, it’s not,” she denied and tried to control her lips.

“I think there is,” he said, his tone teasing. “Give it another second or two and it’s gonna be impossible to hide. C’mon, lemme see it...”

“You’re nuts, Evans,” she said, but wasn’t able to hold back what he wanted to see.

His thumb traced over her smile. “Nuts about you.”

The words sank in deeper than she normally would’ve allowed them to in a moment of awareness and she felt her heart responding to them with a much faster beat than normal. The situation had changed from playful to serious in a blink and she suddenly wasn’t sure what to do about it.

Max could read the indecision in her eyes and he knew he didn’t have the answers she needed. Or at least the answers she wanted to hear at that moment. “You know, the first time I saw you I felt like I wanted to live again. After I came home I felt so disconnected from everyone and everything, alive but dead at the same time. It’s hard to explain, but you changed that for me. You never spoke at the meetings, but there was somethin’ about you that made me realize the sun was still comin’ up every mornin’. And for the first time in months I actually wanted to get up to see it again.”

It was really hard to believe that she had brought those feelings out in him since she didn’t feel that special or able to do that, but instead of denying it, she rested one hand over his carefully. “I promise you, getting up will always be worth it.”

He chuckled. “I know you don’t see it but if you give me a chance I’m gonna make you see it one day.”

“You can try.”

“You can give me a chance.”

“I’m here ain’t I?”

“Yeah, you are,” he said with a smile. “I have a feelin' you’re gonna be teaching me quite a few lessons in patience.”

“You can count on that much,” she nodded slightly.

He growled playfully and rolled them over. “I’m gonna kiss you,” he warned quietly and lowered his head.

“Just a brief one,” she told him without much strength in her voice.

He gave her a brief peck on the lips and pulled back to look at her. “Brief enough?” he asked, biting back a grin.

You wanna play, Evans? she thought, amused. Okay, then we’ll play. “Yeah, it was okay,” she said and got up, trying not to laugh at his expression when he had been so sure she would give in and ask for more.

“You know, we’re gonna have to work on that ‘cause I don’t want okay,” he said as he got to his feet and followed her up to the house.

*****

Michael blinked a few times when the sun came up just enough to shine through the huge window into his room and directly at the head of the bed. Damn, he thought drowsily, I forgot to close the damn curtains last night. He frowned when he tried to move his arm, but failed because something was blocking it.

The memories of the night before came back when he saw three empty condom wrappers on his nightstand. He grinned goofily and looked down to find Courtney curled up at his side, totally naked. She had taken his arm hostage and considering the fact that his hand was tingling and stinging when he moved his fingers, she had been on it most of the night.

He rolled to his side slightly and moved her up gently to drag his arm free. “Ungh,” he made a face when the blood started to rush through his veins again, leaving a very uncomfortable feeling in his whole arm for a few minutes. Once he had his arm back in control, he propped it up on the bed and rested his head in his hand while he studied her still sleeping figure.

There was a small print dividing tanned skin from pale where her bikini had sat. He used his index finger to wander along the line on her hip and smirked when she shifted slightly without waking up. Did it feel any different this morning? he wondered and tried to listen to his own feelings. No, he was still interested and he didn’t plan to just run after sex like he normally did. Satisfied with his assessment, he nodded to himself and rolled over to lie on his back again to stare at the ceiling.

Things had started to change all of the sudden and he wondered how this would affect his life and the people in it. His mind automatically went to his best friend and her little brother. There wasn’t a doubt he would’ve stayed with them all night if Courtney hadn’t been in the picture, but Maria had understood that spending a night with her in one bed wasn’t an option when his girlfriend was around. Although the little voice in his head was telling him he sucked as a friend and the more he thought about it, the more he believed it. They needed you no matter what she said. You know her better than to believe she was really okay at that moment.

Eventually the thoughts became too much to ignore. He sighed and glanced at his girlfriend again, wondering if he should kiss her or something before leaving, but he rolled his eyes at his thoughts and got up. Yeah, now you’re getting all romantic or something, Guerin?

He snatched his jeans from the floor and pulled them on, not caring about anything else. His feet carried him to the door, but he changed directions quickly to pull the curtains closed before he finally left his room to go and check on Maria and Cody.

“You’re up early,” someone said as he stepped out into the hall.

“Hey,” he greeted Liz in surprise. “Could say the same about you.”

“Yeah,” she shrugged. “Somehow the night was pretty restless.”

“You’re worried about goin’ home,” he stated not questioned.

Liz leaned against the opposite wall and looked at him. “It wasn’t easy before, but after last night…” she sighed and shook her head. “I’m not sure what’s going be waiting for me.” It was different to talk to Michael than to Max. He wasn’t as pushy about the subject.

“One word from you and any of us will face him with you an’ the little man. You don’t have to do this alone.”

“I know, but… I doubt bringing someone would help the situation. I guess I should try it alone first and see what he has to say.” There was the small hope that now that she knew people who had seen his true face, she would be able to deal with him better.

“Alright, but don’t hesitate to call any of us, okay?” He looked around and walked over to the small table in the hallway, getting a notepad and a pencil from it to scribble down his number. “You can bunk in with any of us if it’s necessary, plenty of options,” he winked at her.

She took the note from him and shoved it into her jeans. “Thanks, Michael.”

“You know you’re probably gonna have your hands full getting Evans to drop you off and leave you guys there alone, right?”

“Yeah, I know, but I doubt it’d help the situation if Trent saw HIM of all people, ya know?”

He tipped his head to the side as he watched her. “You think you can handle him?”

She remembered earlier on the beach when she had left him running hot and cold. “I believe so.”

He smirked slightly. “Yeah, y’know what? I believe you can.”

“Thanks for inviting me,” she looked up at him with an honest smile. “The weekend away from the day-to-day routine was very much needed and I think Aaron’s had a lot of fun too.”

“The three amigos,” he said with a chuckle. “He fit right in with Cody and Chase. The three of them are gonna be good buddies.”

“Amazing how life works sometimes huh?” She looked at him, amused when he frowned. “I mean a few weeks ago I didn’t really know anyone here considering the circumstances and my busy life and Aaron was pretty alone too. And then it turns out that the gang I serve in the café on a regular basis has two little men his age as well.”

“Yeah, life’s funny that way.” His thoughts momentarily turned to his own situation but he quickly shook them off. “Just remember that you’ve got friends now and you’re not all alone in the big bad city.”

She smirked. “Yeah, thanks to you.”

Max walked in and just overheard the last bit. He controlled the urge to roll his eyes when he passed them on his way to the bathroom. “You always walk around half naked?” he greeted Michael.

Michael looked down at himself. “Not always. Sometimes I walk around totally naked.”

“Whatever,” the other man grumbled and flipped him off before he disappeared into the room at the end of the hall.

“Isn’t he nice,” Liz said with a quirked eyebrow.

“Must be somethin’ nice about him since you seem to like him,” he teased.

“ME? Like him?” she joked. “Nah, I just deal with him.”

“Uh-huh, I think ya like him, Liz.” He winked. “And between me, you, an’ the wall, I think you’re good for him.”

“If he wasn’t so stubborn sometimes,” she muttered and looked at the closed door. “Well, I guess I can be too.”

He snorted loudly. “Liz, the two of you give stubborn a whole new meanin’.”

“I think you can say that about everyone in this house,” she said and rolled her eyes.

“I’ll give ya that one.” He shrugged. “Seriously though, you bring out a different side of the guy.”

“I think there’s always someone who gets the best out of you, ya know?” she said with a shrug. “Look at you an’ Maria.” She deliberately didn’t refer to his current girlfriend.

“Me an’ Maria? You think the two of us bring out the best in each other?”

“Um-hmm, I believe that.”

He glanced down the hall thoughtfully and a moment later he shook his head. “Nah, we irritate the hell outta each other, argue about anything when the mood strikes, and drive each other up the wall.”

Liz laughed. “That’s probably true, but you also always know what the other one’s thinking without asking and you guys have each other’s back when something’s wrong.”

“Well, yeah, but that’s just us bein’ best friends.”

She looked at him intensely, trying to find out if he really believed it or if he was just saying it to cover his real thoughts. “Haven’t seen a lot of friends who’re that close.”

He shook his head. “Best friends always have each other’s backs and, hell we’ve been like that since we were little kids.”

That’s probably the problem, she thought. They were so focused on their friendship that they had probably never allowed themselves to consider more, which was just sad because they’d be the perfect couple in her opinion. “It could get difficult with your girlfriend,” she mused, not sure how he would react. It wasn’t like they were really friends yet, so maybe she had no right to tell him stuff like that.

“It’ll just take some getting used to. Maria’ll understand and so will Courtney. They’re reasonable women.” Since when did reasonable and women go in the same sentence?

“Yeah, maybe.” She wasn’t convinced of that. No matter how reasonable they were, this was a situation that just screamed of future jealousy and hurt.

He frowned at the uncertainty in her voice. “You don’t agree.”

“I think this situation’s gonna cause trouble,” she admitted honestly.

He laughed and shook his head. “It’ll be okay.” Part of him wondered if it was possible that she was right though.

“Well, it’s just the way I see it,” she shrugged. “I might be wrong.”

“I love a woman who can admit when she’s wrong.” He patted her shoulder. “C’mon, whatcha say we grab some breakfast?”

Don’t be so sure, Michael, she thought but didn’t say anything. “Sure.”

He just grinned. “I’m just gonna run check on Maria an’ Cody first, make sure he’s doin’ okay after last night.”

“What was last night?” she asked with a frown.

“He had a nightmare and had a panic attack when he woke up. Thought at first it was his heart, but thank God it wasn’t.”

“Oh,” Liz said, her expression revealing shock. “Poor little man. I didn’t even realize since I was already in bed.” She looked back at the kids’ room. “Did the other kids wake up as well?” She wondered why Aaron hadn’t come to her.

“Yeah, it woke the other boys up too. Max took care of Aaron and the little guy didn’t wanna let go of him. He finally got him calmed down and back to sleep though.”

“Okay, good,” she said and had to smile. No matter how much she fought it, Aaron was totally taken with Max and admittedly, Max was doing a good job with him. They stopped in front of Maria’s door and Liz gestured to the kitchen. “I’ll see what I can do over there.”

He nodded. “Cool, catch up with ya in a few.” He turned the door knob when she continued on down the hall and he eased the door open to peer around the edge. Maria was asleep with one arm hanging over the side of the bed and Cody was sitting up, his fingers plucking at the tuft of white hair at the top of Quackers’ head. “Hey, little man, how’re ya feelin’?” he asked quietly.

Cody glanced up and smiled when he saw who had joined them. “I’m okay,” he said, his tone hushed so he wouldn’t disturb his sister’s sleep.

“Yeah?” he pushed the door close and crept across the floor, carefully sitting on the bed next to Cody to keep from waking Maria up. “No more bad dreams?”

The boy shook his head wordlessly.

“Good, I’m glad to hear that.” He lifted his legs up on the bed and leaned back against the headboard. “What sounds good for breakfast?”

“Pancakes?” Cody asked hopefully, his voice accidently louder than he had intended.

“Pancakes sound good. Maybe the ones shaped like dinosaurs?”

Maria shifted in her sleep and pulled her arm up, placing it in Michael’s lap unconsciously.

“Yeah,” Cody whispered.

Michael jumped unconsciously when Maria’s hand landed in his lap. It wasn’t like it was the first time it had ever happened. They had fallen asleep together so many times that they had become accustomed to ignoring the occasional misplaced body part or awkward moment. He carefully moved her hand and glanced at Cody, who was now comfortably squished between them. “You wanna talk about that dream you had last night?”

The boy shook his head and picked at Quackers, ducking when Maria moved her arm again after Michael had removed it and she almost hit her brother’s head.

“Little bit restless this mornin’, isn’t she?”

Maria was aware of Michael being in their room, having wakened when he moved her arm, but she pretended to still be asleep. Maybe he would leave if he knew she was awake, not wanting to be that close with Courtney nearby. But Cody was enjoying his presence, so she made the sacrifice for him. Just for him, she tried to convince herself.

“Got any big plans when we get back home?” Michael asked when Cody reached over to pat Maria’s arm.

“No, I am going back to Mommy today.”

“Nothin’ on your agenda, huh? No big reunion with that little neighbor girl that likes you?” he teased.

Cody looked at him sadly. “Mommy said, Tara and her mommy gotta leave us soon.”

“And where’re they gonna go?”

He sighed and shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“Well, maybe you guys can write each other.”

“But I don’t know how to write, Mike,” the little boy whispered and shook his head.

“You will though. You know your letters and numbers, now you just gotta learn how to put ‘em together to make words.”

Cody nodded and placed his stuffed animal aside to sit up and look at his friend. “Don’t you like Maria no more?” he asked curiously.

His sister groaned internally at his question, but stayed where she was to hear what Michael would answer.

“Cody,” Michael lifted him up and settled him on his knees so the boy could see the sincerity in his face, “buddy, nothin’ could ever stop me from liking your sister.”

The little boy looked at his sister and then at Michael before he took his large hand and moved it over to Maria’s smaller one on the bed. He crawled over to the other side of the bed and snuggled up against him, forcing Michael to move closer to Maria so he wouldn’t fall out.

He sighed but let it go. “I know you don’t understand this, but me and Maria, we’re best friends, not boyfriend and girlfriend.”

Maria realized only now when Michael brushed against her that he was bare from the waist up. Great, just what she needed, she thought when her mind immediately went back to that little fantasy from last night.

“But Maria’s better than that girl,” Cody insisted.

“You don’t even know Courtney,” he pointed out to the little guy.

The little boy crossed his arms over his chest and his expression turned stubborn. “Do you like her better?”

Maria couldn’t hold back anymore, knowing that her brother wouldn’t give up and Michael would never really set him straight the way she could. She lifted her head slightly and looked at her brother sleepily over her best friend’s chest. “Didn’t we discuss this last night, Cody?”

“Mike didn’t say,” he mumbled and looked away.

“He likes her in a different way, that can’t be compared,” she told him, wishing her brother would just accept it instead of making her say it again and again.

“I want it to be like before.” He grabbed Quackers and buried his face against the duck’s head.

Me too, Maria thought. She hated to see her brother like this, but there wasn’t a way to change the situation. Michael had his own life and she didn’t want to be in the way.

“Things change, Cody. We grow up, new people come into our lives, and that means things change. It doesn’t mean we care any less for the people who have been in our lives for so long, it just means – “

“It means you don’t like us like before,” Cody muttered mutinously.

“Do you like Mommy any less just because you’re with us this weekend?” Maria asked her brother.

“No.” He rolled his eyes and stuck his tongue out at her. “But I don’t got no girlfriend.”

“But you have other people to hang out with and now Michael has someone else to hang out with.”

“So?” He refused to give an inch.

Part 70

Post by Double Trouble »

begonia9508: Thanks!

It won’t be long before we’re able to see what happens as the gang jumps back into their daily lives.

Lol, well… Michael probably isn’t gonna make things easy on himself considering his situation.

CandyliciousLovah: Cody really isn’t ready to share his friend with Courtney.

Liz is getting there.

Natalie36: Thanks! We’re seeing some progress on the couple front… M&M, it’s gonna take some time.

Earth2Mama: Lol, no, and Cody isn’t giving an inch.

Liz is pretty certain that showing up at home with one of the guys will only worsen the situation. We’ll have to see if she sticks to that plan.

Lol, hope your eyes are better this week.

mary mary: Cody’s a stubborn little guy and he’s certain he’s right about this one.

xilaj: Max and Liz do both need that… and Aaron will benefit from it as well.

Michael is someone Liz can lean on if she ever needs to do so. You’re right about Trent, he’s probably going to be worse than ever now.

Poor Maria’s gonna be trying to explain things to Cody for a while because he’s not interested in Courtney disturbing the balance in his universe.

Alien_Friend: Lol, you and Cody are in total agreement then. Michael definitely was in a hurry to get to Maria and Cody, wasn’t he?

A good start for our dreamer couple. We’re pretty sure Aaron will be thrilled with this new development. We’ll see more growth with them. Liz is certain that showing up at home with Max will only cause the situation to ignite.

It’s possible we could see some confiding between Liz and Michael since they have formed a pretty good friendship and they both have difficult situations.

Cardinal: A very important step for these two. Lol, we’re working on getting her out of her current living situation. Max would be happy to help her right out the door of that second job.

Perfect description of Cody.

killjoy: We’ll see how your math works for them. ;)

It’s definitely gonna take time.

Kyle and Tess, well, we’ll be checking in with them soon.

somewhere87: We will see truth in some aspects.

Nah, we totally don’t think it’s bad.

keepsmiling7: Max and Liz are making some good progress and they’re taking the next step.

Oh, lol, Max wanted another kiss.

Aaron’s a lucky little guy.

Eva: Welcome back!

This group does seem to finally getting on the right path. Lol, forward movement is movement no matter how small it is. Maria’s fantasies are going to be the only Candy action we get for a while. Alex and Isabel are moving past their prejudices about each other and really making a connection. And Max and Liz are definitely working on their forward momentum.

Now Kyle and Tess… they’ve got some issues to work on.

sarammlover: Well, Liz doesn’t want anyone with her when she faces Trent because she’s worried it will only make the situation worse. Yeah, Michael’s really stuck between that rock and hard place… and probably will be for a while.

Marsis: Howdy! Thanks, we just love these little guys too! They certainly do add to the storyline. The characters are really only just beginning to open up so hang on to your hat!

Part 70

Complications

Maria dropped her head on the bed in frustration and closed her eyes. This was just what she needed. A stubborn brother who refused to see the truth. It wasn’t like Michael was only being ripped from him, he was also being taken from her and she was starting to hurt over it as well.

Michael sighed and reached for the boy again, cradling him against his body. “Cody, you an’ Maria, you’re always gonna be important to me. Nothin’ could ever change that. Maybe if ya just gave Courtney a chance you’d see that she’s pretty cool.”

“Yeah,” Maria reached over her friend and caressed her brother’s head. “Michael will always be your friend, Cody.”

“I’ll always be both your friends,” Michael corrected, shooting an odd look at her. Why wouldn’t she include herself in there? “Courtney wouldn’t want me to stop bein’ friends just ‘cause she’s my girlfriend, buddy.”

Who would’ve thought it would ever feel awkward to share a bed with him, she thought sadly. Suddenly it wasn’t okay for them to snuggle and hang out like they used to. Of course she could understand his reasons very well, but part of her was thinking selfishly at the moment, especially when she saw her brother hurting.

“I don’t wanna talk no more,” Cody said and crawled over Michael to squeeze in between them once more.

Maria looked up at her friend helplessly. Normally he had a way of making everyone feel better, but she feared that these days there wasn’t really a possibility of doing that.

He rubbed the little boy’s back helplessly. He didn’t know what to say to make him feel better and he could tell that the boy’s distress was affecting Maria. “I’ll stay a while, maybe that’ll help him relax a little.”

“Okay,” she whispered and wrapped an arm around her brother, wishing Michael would do the same with both of them, like he used to.

Michael rested his arm over Cody and rubbed Maria’s arm. “He’ll be okay,” he said quietly.

She nodded and buried her head closer towards her brother to kiss his forehead. It would take time for him to get used to the fact that Michael had to be shared now.

He tipped his head back and stared up at the ceiling, ignoring it when Cody kicked him several times and elbowed him in the ribs more than once as he shifted around to get comfortable. He closed his eyes when the little boy finally found an acceptable position and quieted down. He didn’t know what to say or do to make Cody understand that everything was gonna be okay, that he wasn’t going anywhere.

Maria could easily see the thoughts running behind Michael’s eyes as she watched him secretly from the side. He was keeping a safe distance between them, which was totally understandable, but disappointing.

“They put lizards and bugs in the bed last night, ya know,” he mumbled drowsily.

“Really?” she asked, having to bite back her amusement. “Well, their way of welcoming Courtney.”

“Yeah, she felt welcomed alright.” He grimaced. “I know it’s their way of testing boundaries and determining if they’re ever gonna like her or not but she wasn’t amused.”

“It was just a prank, Michael. The boys always do shit like that when they’re together.” Seriously, if Courtney couldn’t deal with this then she really wasn’t way the right person for him.

“I know, and I tried to explain that to her but, no dice.” He smirked. “Not really into lizards at all.”

“I don’t want them in my bed either, I guess,” she smirked.

“Don’t know too many people who do.” He chuckled quietly. “I told her it’ll happen again. Maybe not that particular prank, but they’ll come up with somethin’ else.”

“Yeah, definitely.”

“He and Chase took to Aaron right off, didn’t they?”

“Yeah, the troublemakers have a third conspirator now.”

“It’ll be good for all three of ‘em.” He smiled and opened one eye to glance down at the little boy. “You’d never think someone who looks so innocent would hide lizards in someone’s bed.”

She snorted. “We know them better than that.”

“Yeah, no doubt about that.” He laughed and shook his head as he shifted around to get comfortable. “You had a relaxing weekend, RP?”

“Yeah, wish it wasn’t over yet.” Okay it wasn’t a lie, but a small part of her was glad that they would be going home so she didn’t have to watch him with his girlfriend all day.

“Me too. Been an interesting weekend, huh?”

Interesting, alright. “Yeah.”

“Certainly got a little insight into Evans. Still not sure what’s up with my sister and the nerd king.” His brow furrowed when he frowned. “What d’you think about him?”

“He seems to be okay.”

“Yeah, but... I mean, WITH Isabel?”

If he only knew, she thought. “Stranger things have happened I guess. I mean… Michael Guerin has a girlfriend.”

“Hey, I don’t think that’s stranger than Isabel hookin’ up with the nerd king.”

“No? I think it is.” Okay, maybe it wasn’t, but for her it was different.

“I’ll admit he’s not like I thought he was.” He shrugged one shoulder. “Isabel does seem to have taken a liking to him.”

“He’s obviously got a lot on his plate, so… I think he’s okay and I guess we haven’t seen the last of him.”

“No, I think you’re right about that.” He yawned and reached up to rub his eyebrow. “Got any idea what's goin’ on with little sister an’ Kyle?”

“Why would I know that?” she asked.

“I don’t know. They just kinda seemed to be a little off last night.”

“Probably better you ask him,” she mumbled tiredly.

“Yeah, guess I should do that.” He yawned again and let the peaceful moment wash over him. He could hear movement in the kitchen but it sounded muted and distant so he let it fade into the background.

Maria was on her way back to sleep and she reached over to tug on the mixed-up blankets to pull the covers over them as well as she could. She wanted to enjoy the moment as long as possible.

****

Liz picked Aaron up and sat him on the counter in the kitchen so she could wash his hands. He and Chase had been outside playing at the edge of the water with Leo while Kyle and Isabel took turns chasing them. She glanced at Max when he brushed against her as he reached for the pancake mix.

He grinned at her as he tossed the box to Alex. “You know you’re not right for this mornin’,” he whispered gruffly.

“You said brief,” she answered innocently.

“I’ll remember that next time.” He gently squeezed Aaron’s leg. “Ready for pancakes?”

“Pancakes,” the boy shouted excited.

He grinned as they high-fived each other. “Bacon or sausage on the side?”

“Oh no, we’ll just have a bit of syrup on top today,” Liz warned.

He made a face at her. “No meat on the side? Really?”

“Max,” she hissed. “You know kids don’t need an overdose of sugar AND fat.”

He held his hands up. “Okay, chill out, Attila. We’ll have pancakes and some kinda fruit on the side.”

“I see you learn quickly,” she winked at him and helped Aaron down again. “Go and get Chase, hmm?”

“Okay!” he ran out of the room to find his new friend.

“Cantaloupe?” Max asked as he watched her.

“Sure, why not,” she nodded.

“Cool. Guess I’d better get back to breakfast before Alex thinks I deserted him.”

“You should do that, Max,” Tess said, elbowing him on her way to the refrigerator.

“Shut it and grab the cantaloupe, put yourself to work,” he said, giving her a playful shove.

Tess pulled the cantaloupe out and tossed it to him. “Not the kitchen help, Evans.” She winked and went after the orange juice.

Isabel joined them in the kitchen and smiled when she saw Max and Alex behind the counter. “Ah, I see my favorite boys are making breakfast. Like it.”

Alex lifted an eyebrow as he glanced at her over his shoulder. “That a genuine comment or is that your way of paving the way for some sort of special breakfast request?”

“No special requests,” she denied and smiled before she went out on deck.

He and Max exchanged a look. “Is she always that confusing?” he asked the other man.

Max snorted. “We’d be glad if she were. Most of the time she’s a…” he looked around and then mouthed the word bitch with a grin.

“Yeah,” Alex mused as he went back to cooking, “I can see how she comes across that way most of the time.”

“She’s used to letting people think that way,” the other man agreed. “Not always though.” He had a feeling that Alex could count himself that little second group soon.

“Huh.” He flipped the bacon over as his gaze was drawn to the woman standing on the deck, staring out at the ocean as the light breeze played with the ends of her hair. “So, what’s waiting for you when you get back home?”

Max shrugged. “My simple apartment, work…” he wanted to count Liz and Aaron in those things as well, but he still wasn’t sure about that one.

“Yeah, I know what ya mean.” He cursed when the bacon grease popped and he jumped back.

Chase giggled when he saw the man in front of the stove jump as Tony carried him into the kitchen. “Good morning, everyone. Found someone in the hallway.”

“Tony, I don’t want no eggs,” the little boy said, wrinkling his nose at the food.

“I’m sure there’re pancakes too, buddy,” he rubbed his back and walked outside on the deck with the boy, letting him down when he saw Kyle playing catch with Leo.

“You do realize that after this weekend any time we go away as a group we’re gonna be put on KP, right?” Max asked with a roll of his eyes.

“Not sure if I’ll be here, but I guess I’d survive it,” Alex shrugged. “Could be worse.”

Max snorted. “You can’t be giving up already.”

“Yeah…” The guy didn’t know the real reason why he was here, so what was there to say?

“She likes you.” He grinned and shrugged when Alex turned his head sharply to look at him. “I’m serious. Oh, you’re not her usual type and she’d probably beat me senseless with the heaviest thing she could reach if she knew I was saying anything, but she does.”

“Yeah, she just has the weirdest ways of showing it,” Tony agreed when he walked back inside and leaned over the counter to snatch a piece of crispy bacon. “Hey, where’s Courtney?” he asked a little bit quieter.

“I don’t know,” Max answered with a shrug. “Haven’t seen Guerin either.”

“Well, I know where Michael is, that’s why I’m asking,” Tony whispered. “Not sure his girlfriend will like the fact that he’s all snuggled up in bed with Maria and Cody.” He lifted one eyebrow, amused.

“I don’t see the girl havin’ that much of a sense of humor,” he muttered.

“No girl does,” Tony shook his head and took another piece of bacon. “Wanted to check on Maria after the shock last night, but obviously Guerin was a bit faster.” Not that it was really much of a surprise. He turned slightly when Courtney walked into the kitchen.

“Morning,” she greeted. “Have you seen Michael?”

“Probably out for a morning run,” Max said.

“Oh, right. I’m all for keeping fit, but I’m not about to get up and go running on vacation.” She glanced around. “I um, I haven’t seen Maria this morning... did she go running too?”

“I think she’s still sleeping. Little man’s not up yet either. Would ya get them?” Max pointed behind her. “Breakfast is almost ready.”

“Yeah, sure.”

“Dude,” Tony snorted, “that’s cold,” he said once she was gone.

“That’s what Guerin gets for being a prick 50% of the day,” the other man said with a shrug. “Hey, we don’t know about him being in that room, right?” A slow grin appeared on his face.

“Hell, I’m not about to admit that one,” Tony said and snatched another piece of bacon. “I’m goin’ outside. No reason to be in the line of fire.”

Max snorted and went back to work. Someone had to get the girl to face the ugly truth. She was gonna have to learn it sooner or later.

“I don’t understand you guys,” Alex said as he moved the bacon from the pan to the waiting platter.

“What exactly?”

He shook his head. “There’s all this shit goin’ on that could be resolved if you’d just open your mouths and talk to each other.”

“Yeah, but it wouldn’t be as much fun,” Max said and winked before turning serious again. “I know what ya mean, but somehow it just works different with this group. Gotta learn things the hard way, ya know?”

“Apparently.” He shrugged one shoulder. “Make life a lot simpler, but I guess you’ve got your own rhythm to things.”

****

Courtney wandered along the hallway towards Maria’s room, wondering if she should knock and wait or just walk in. A knock alone might not wake them up. Her night had probably been bad after what happened to her brother and she couldn’t help but feel a bit bad for the other girl.

She stopped at the door and raised her hand to knock before placing it on the doorknob to twist. The door opened with a high-pitched squeaking sound and she was about to apologize for it when the words stuck in her throat as the bed came into sight.

Michael shifted, but couldn’t roll over since something was blocking him and he reluctantly opened his eyes. He winced when his slight movement disturbed the person sleeping next to him and a small hand came up to whack him in the face with a yellow blob. “Damn it,” he muttered as he reached up to grab the duck, running his tongue over his bottom lip. “Yuck.” He moved Cody just enough so he could sit up and he ran his hand over his mouth to pull a yellow duck hair off of his lip.

He glanced up just as he swung his legs over the side of the bed and he froze for a moment when he saw his girlfriend standing there, arms crossed over her chest as she glared at him. “Mornin’,” he mumbled, still half-asleep.

“Mornin’,” she answered shortly.

The chill in her tone had him really looking at her and he turned his head to follow her gaze to the bed. “Oh, um, I just dozed off after checking to make sure everything was okay this mornin’.”

Maria woke up slowly from the noise around her. She didn’t want to be pulled into the real world already, but the voices kept talking and made it impossible to go back to sleep. She brushed her hand over her face to wipe away a few hairs before she opened her eyes. What was Courtney doing in her room?

“I see,” his girlfriend said with a stern face and only then did Maria start to realize what was going on. Oh damn, he had probably fallen asleep with them.

Michael shifted to check on Cody and his gaze collided with Maria’s. “He’s good. Probably oughta get him up since it smells like breakfast should be ready soon.” He forced a smile when Courtney cleared her throat. “I think I’d better go.”

“Yeah,” Maria agreed quietly and watched him leave, not looking at the other woman. She breathed only when they had both left the room and she rested back against the headboard with a weird feeling in her chest.

Michael walked along the hallway, conscious of Courtney silently fuming beside him. “What?” he said as he stepped into their room.

“You seriously have to ask?” she grumbled.

“We’re just friends, Courtney.”

“Friends don’t snuggle in bed together. At least I don’t know any friends who do that.”

“We were asleep with a four-year-old between us.” What was the big deal?

“That is not the point,” she shook her head and pulled her hair up in a ponytail while she walked around the room to keep herself busy.

“Then what the hell’s the point? It was just Maria an’ Cody.”

He really didn’t understand, she realized. “Let’s just get to breakfast,” she said, knowing that talking at this point wouldn’t change anything. She would let everything sink in first and come up with a good way to explain her feelings. He had to understand there were certain boundaries in a relationship and she was sure that sleeping in one bed with another woman was outside those boundaries. “You might wanna put a tee shirt on.”

He rolled his eyes. Was she really getting that uptight over him dozing off with Maria and Cody? It wasn’t a big deal unless she made it one. He grabbed a tee shirt out of his bag and pulled it on. “Let’s go, I’m starvin’.”

“Yeah, I bet,” she muttered and walked out of the room.

“Hey,” he caught up with her and grabbed her arm, gripping it gently as he tugged her around. “Let’s just forget this, huh?”

“I’ll forget it FOR NOW,” she agreed. “But we are going to talk about it later, when we have more privacy than this.”

Ungh, God, more talking?! “Fine.”

He wasn’t looking forward to it, she thought, a little bit amused. It was probably his first serious talk in a so-called relationship. Yeah, he’d better learn it sooner than later.

He shook his head and followed her when she started walking again. Why couldn’t women be more like men? he wondered a bit sulkily.

Max glanced up from the counter when they walked in and he put on a surprised face. “Oh, you found him?” He looked at Michael. “Thought you were out running or something.”

Michael narrowed his eyes at the too-innocent tone in the other man’s voice. “No, I wasn’t.”

“What’s with Maria?” He looked at Courtney. “Are she an’ Cody coming?”

“Yeah, she’s getting little man up. They’ll be along in a few minutes.”

“Then I guess we’re good to go,” Max walked over to the cupboard and pulled a stack of plates out to place them on the counter before getting mugs as well.

Kyle walked by and grabbed one of the stacks. “Breakfast on the deck?” he asked no one in particular.

“Yeah, definitely,” Isabel said and got up to get the mugs Max was pulling out.

“Cool.” He snatched up a handful of silverware and dropped it on top of the plates, wincing at the noise. “C’mon, Leo, last chance to catch the good scraps.”

“How can we have scraps before we eat?” Isabel asked, rolling her eyes at him. “Don’t feed your dog our food.”

“Hey, he’s welcome to whatever happens to fall off of the table,” he said and stuck his tongue out at her.

“No wonder he’s so fat.”

“Hey, that dog is NOT fat!”

“He is a bit,” Maria agreed when she came to join the group, carrying her still sleepy brother in her arms.

“You two need a reality check; that dog is nowhere near being fat.” Kyle took Cody from Maria and settled into one of the chairs with the boy in his lap. “Whatcha say, Code-man, think Leo’s fat?”

“Not fat,” the boy mumbled and leaned against the man’s chest.

“There you go,” he said smugly and rubbed the boy’s back in gentle circles. The girls would never argue with the little guy.

“Oh well, then maybe it’s the master who’s getting fat,” Maria mused and shrugged innocently.

He glanced down at himself for a moment before shaking his head. “I think you two need to get glasses.”

“Or you need a personal trainer.” Maria walked around the table and used two fingers to pinch the flesh on his side. “I give fitness classes now and then. Want me to help you?”

“No, Maria, I’m not gonna go to some chick workout class.” He rolled his eyes. “I put in enough time working out.”

“I remember that,” she winked at him as she took her seat.

He grinned and rested his chin on Cody’s head as his gaze moved to the ocean. Things had always been so uncomplicated with Maria and they had done their thing for a while. One random round of sex with Tess and suddenly everything felt so complicated. He hated complicated.

Max sat down and sank deeper into his seat to nudge Tess with his foot. He could see the disgusted look at the reminder of the casual thing Maria and Kyle had going on for a while. When she finally looked at him he gave her an encouraging smile.

“I think I could live here,” Tess said, forcing her mind away from the easy way Kyle and Maria interacted. It was annoying.

“Feel free to,” Isabel smirked into her coffee.

“I don’t know,” she said breezily, “I kinda like living with you.”

“Temporary, remember? We said TEMPORARY.”

“I’m really not feeling like I’m wanted,” she muttered.

“Hell, you can move in with me,” Max said as he buttered a piece of toast. Tess would never agree to that, but it was more Liz and Kyle’s reactions that he was interested in.

“Yeah, why don’t we all move in with Max,” Liz grumbled and bit into her toast.

“We move in wif you, Max,” Aaron said as he wiggled his way up into the man’s lap.

Great, his sister thought. That was just what she needed, a kid who would throw a fit later since Aaron didn’t understand the difference between truth and irony yet.

Michael winced as he stepped out on the deck and overheard the little boy’s comment. He could just imagine the explaining Liz would have to do when Aaron cornered her with what he was sure to think was the perfect answer. “You two make a helluva team in the kitchen,” he said as he sat down and started serving himself. Maybe that would take Aaron’s attention off of living with Max.

“Yeah,” Kyle agreed and rearranged Cody’s seat in his lap to get a bit of the things the boy was allowed to eat on the plate in front of him.

“Max makes good food,” Aaron said, leaning back against the man’s chest and happily munching on a pancake.

“Can I have one too?” Cody pointed at Aaron and then looked up at Kyle questioningly.

“Yeah, if you promise to eat your fruit too.”

The boy nodded with a sigh. “Okay.”

“The fruit’s not that bad.” He pulled the bowl of fruit closer and frowned as he tipped it towards him. “Who did this?” he asked when he saw that the melon had been cut into animal shapes.

“I did,” Alex said, lifting his fork. “Thought the kids might get a kick out of it.”

He smirked and nodded. “Look at that, Code-man.”

Cody pushed himself up and reached for one of the pieces of fruit, holding it up to show his sister. “M’ria, look, it’s a shark!”

“Yeah, wow, huh?” She smiled at her bother’s excitement over tiny things like this.

He looked at Alex. “Can you make seahorses too?”

“With a bit of practice,” he smiled, “I think so.”

The little boy’s eyes widened. “Wow.” He bit into the shark-shaped cantaloupe and chewed noisily. “It’s better like this,” he said after a moment.

Kyle smirked at Maria after her brother’s comment and shook his head in amusement.

Chase started to grab the bowl, wanting a piece of fruit since his friend said it was so good, and Tony just barely caught it before it tipped over. “Is there a dog one, Tony?” he asked.

“Hmm, I don’t know,” the man grabbed one. “Does that look like a dog?”

He studied it for a minute before shaking his head. “No, tha’s Donkey!”

“Donkey?”

“From Shrek,” Isabel said with a roll of her eyes.

Maria watched her brother and smiled when he munched on his little shark. “Hey, why don’t ya come over here, so Kyle can eat his own breakfast, huh?”

Cody tipped his head back to look at Kyle. “I’m gonna go to Maria,” he whispered loudly.

“Okay,” he sat him down on the deck. “Make sure she eats enough, alright?”

“Can I have a shark for her too?”

“Sure,” he offered him the bowl to pick another one out.

Cody smiled as he picked one out. “Thanks,” he said and hurried around the table to take it to his sister. “Look, M’ria, I got you a shark too!”

“Well, thank you,” she picked him up and sat him in her lap before she took it from him and shoved it into her mouth. “Mmm, never ate shark before.”

He giggled and shook his head. “You couldn’t eat a real shark!”

“Probably too big, huh?”

“Yep.” He settled back against her and munched on his shark.

“So how’re we going back? Same driving arrangements as we had coming out here?” Max asked, getting the plate of bacon.

Aaron’s eyes widened at the bacon and he made a face when Liz cleared her throat and shook her head at him. His little fingers were itching and his mouth was watering at the scent of the food but he settled for reaching for another small pancake. “I wanna go wif you,” he said, looking up at Max.

“We’ll go with Max,” Liz assured him, knowing the boy would throw a major fit otherwise.

“I wanna go wif Tony,” Chase said matter-of-factly.

“Thanks, buddy,” Michael stuck his tongue out at his nephew.

“Tony’s fun, Uncle Mike.”

“I wanna go with Mike,” Cody said matter-of-factly.

“Cody, I think we’ll just ride with Tony again,” Maria said, uncomfortable with the thought of riding back into the city with her best friend and his girlfriend.

“No,” he shook his head stubbornly and crossed his arms over his chest.
