hey everyone! This is my first try at AU so please be kind. I've had this idea in my mind for quite a while. I was inspired by 2 songs. One is called "Could it Be" by Christy Carlson Romano and the other is called "Siberia" by the Backstreet Boys.
I just want to say that this story is dedicated to my Roswell Buddy Ernie . Love you Mrs DeLuca!! lol.

Summary: Liz and Max have been best friends since she moved to Roswell the summer before they started 3rd grade. What happens when her best friend from back home comes for a visit and starts dating Max?

Prologue

Liz Parker was going into third grade when her family moved to Roswell from Philadelphia. She left behind a bunch of friends that she would miss, but none more than her best friend Erin or Ernie as she liked to call her. Her and Ernie would write to each other all of the time and promised to visit one another when they were older.

The first couple of weeks in Roswell were extremely hard for Liz. One day her parents decided to take her to the community pool hoping that it would take her mind off of missing Philly and possibly even make some friends. Liz loved to swim so she was very excited to go to the pool.

When they got there she saw the big slide and her big brown eyes lit right up. "Daddy Daddy! Can I go on the big kid slide?!"

"Of course pumpkin. Go ahead." Jeff Parker said with a chuckle.

"YAY!!! Watch me daddy watch me!" Liz screamed with so much excitement in her voice.

"Ok pumpkin" Jeff was so happy to see his daughter this excited. He hadn't seen her like this since before they left.

Liz was in line to go down the slide when she saw a little boy come up behind her. He was soaking wet and had a huge grin on his face. It seemed as if he had just come off the slide and wanted to go on it again. She politely smiled as he got in line behind her.

It was finally her turn to go and when she got to the top she froze. She didn't realize how high up it was and she got really scared.

"Is this your first time on this slide." She heard the boy say to her. She just nodded in reply. "Don't worry, the first time is always scary. It's so much fun though. Do you want me to go first so you can see it's not that bad?" Liz just nodded again. "Ok then. Excuse me" Max went down the slide and splashed into the water. He came up with a big smile. "See it's fun! You try" He screamed up to her from the water." Liz hesitated for a moment and then slowly went sat down and went down the slide. When she splashed into the water she jumped up and laughed. She looked at the boy and noticed him looking at her.

"Was it scary?" He asked her

"No." she said shaking her head. "You were right, it was so much fun. Thanks!" She told him smiling.

"Your welcome. I'm Max."

"I'm Liz. I just moved here."

"Oh! Well welcome to Roswell! Where did you move from?"

"Philadelphia."

"I've heard of that. It's really far away isn't it?"

"Yeah" Liz said sadly. "I miss it. It's so different from here."

"Well don't worry. We'll have so much fun here that pretty soon you won't be missing it at all." Max said with a pleased grin on his face.

"Promise?" Liz asked.

"Promise."

"Thanks. You're the first friend I've made here. I hope we can stay friends for a long time."

"I hope so too Liz."

Max and Liz played together in the pool for a few hours that afternoon until Liz's father came over. "Liz honey, I'm sorry but it's time to go home. Maybe we'll come back again tomorrow ok?"

"Ok Daddy. Bye Max, maybe we can play together again tomorrow."

"Ok. Bye Liz."

As soon as he said goodbye to Liz his mother came over. Max, only a few more minutes and it's time for us to go too.

"Ok." Max said as he played in the pool for a little while longer.

When Liz got home she didn't want to go inside yet so she got a piece of chalk and drew a hopscotch board on her driveway, grabbed a rock and started to play.

Diane Evans was driving home from the pool and got into her driveway when she said to Max, "Isn't that the little girl you were playing with at the pool today?"

"Yeah it is!" Max said very enthusiasticly.

"It looks like she's our new next door neighbor. Maybe you guys can play together more often." Diane told him

"Can I go over now? Just to say hi." Max's eyes were so cute. Diane couldn't say no.

"Sure, but you have to come in and eat dinner so don't be too long ok?"

"Ok Mom." Max said before he jumped out of the car and ran over to Liz. "LIZ!!" he screamed as he ran over.

"Hi Max, what are you doing here?"

"I live right there" Max said pointing to his house. "Isn't this so exciting that we live right next door?!" Max said almost jumping for joy he was so happy.

"Yeah! Oh Max this is great. We can play together all of the time now." The smile on Liz's face was so big and she was so happy that her first friend lived so close to her. "Wanna play hopscotch with me?"

"Sure but only for a little while. My mom said I have to go eat dinner." He said disappointedly

"Ok. Here, you go first" Liz said as they started to play hopscotch. They played together for over an hour before Diane came out and told Max he had to come and eat and dragged him in their house.

Just so you all know this is my plan....update this story on Sundays and Troubled Soul on Saturdays. Whether or not that actually happens who knows hsha. but threatening emails definitely work to make me post! Usually when I get an email to update I update that day. So just a thought if you guys can't wait lol. Ok on with the story...

Chapter 1

6 years later...

It was the night before their freshman year of high school and Max and Liz were getting ready for their annual sleepover ritual that they have done every year before the first day of school.

Ever since that day at the pool when they first met, Max and Liz have been inseperable. They have been the best of friends and everyone in their school...no everyone in the town of Roswell knows it. They are pretty much attached by the hip, never going anywhere without the other. It's a mystery that they haven't started dating yet.

They know each other better than they know anyone else. Probably better than they know themselves as well. They have been there for each other throughout everything that has happened in their lives in the past 6 years. Max was even with Liz to get her ready for her first date in seventh grade. It was with Sean Young, a long time crush of Liz's. She was so nervous, and of course Max was there to help calm her down. Her and Sean "went out" for about 2 or 3 months if you can even call it that. When you're in seventh grade, having a boyfriend or girlfriend consisted of holding hands at school, hugging, and the occasional kiss.

Max on the other hand had yet to find a girl to catch his eye. He was a pretty shy guy when he wasn't with Liz. He was a completely different person around her. He trusted her, and felt comfortable in being himself around her. Seeing Liz with Sean was pretty hard on Max. He wasn't exactly sure why, but he guessed it was because she had another guy friend that she was close to.

Liz was in her room getting some stuff ready for school tomorrow before heading over to Max's. Last year the sleepover was at her house so this year it would be at his. She didn't have to pack any clothes because she slept over there so often that she had her own drawer in his room, just like he had one in hers.

When she made sure she had everything together for school the next morning, she threw her hair up into a messy bun, put some lip gloss on and headed downstairs.

"Bye mom, I'm going to Max's." She told her mom and she was flying out the door.

"Wait a second Liz." Nancy Parker called after her.

"What?"

"Can you dry the dishes really quick before you leave please?"

Liz let out an annoyed sigh. "Mom, I told Max I'd be there 5 minutes ago."

"Liz he lives right next door, what's another 5 minutes gonna do?"

"Fine." Liz said and she marched the to kitchen.

"Thank you sweetheart." Nancy said as she placed a kiss on her daughters cheek.

As Liz was unhappily drying the dishes she heard the phone ring. She heard her mother pick it up and she knew right away who it was. "Max don't worry honey, she's fine, she's just drying the dishes and she'll be right over." Nancy said as she laughed at how similar Max and Liz were. She just couldn't get over how they see eachother almost every minute of every day but they are apart for 5 minutes and they miss each other terribly.

"Ok mom I'm done. Was that Max on the phone?"

"Yes it was, he wanted to know what was taking you so long. He thought maybe you got hurt on the way over." The two Parker girls laughed at that. Max was always so concerned about Liz. But Liz was just as concerned about Max. That's just how their friendship was. When their laughter died down, Liz kissed her mother goodbye and ran out the door. She cut across the grass and walked into the Evans' household.

"Hey Mr E!" Liz called out to Phillip Evans.

"Oh hello Liz. Max is upstairs go on up."

"Thanks!" As Liz went to run up the stairs to Max's room Maz was running down them to see her. They met in the middle and gave each other a big hug. "Hey Chand" She said to him with a big grin on her face.

"Hey Mon" He called back to her. Friends was their favorite television show and since Chandler was Max's favorite and Monica was Liz's favorite and they were both best friends, they called each other that. "Ready for the annual last night of summer festivities?"

"You know it!" she said excitedly. "What movies did you rent this year?"

"Let's see are you up for Disney, scary, funny, or a cry?"

"Hmmm I don't want to be scared before my first day of high school so that's out...and I'm not in a crying mood so that's out. How about the Disney since those are usually funny too."

"You got it Mon." Max put the tape into the VCR and pushed play then plopped back down on his bed next to Liz.

"So which movie is it?" Liz asked him.

"You're just gonna have to wait and see." Max smirked at her.

"Maaaxx. You know I hate the suspense. What if it's one I don't like?" Liz whined.

"Liz you've seen like every Disney movie and have yet to complain about one, except for Pocahantas cuz you are convinced she doesn't have a nose."

"She doesn't! Put the movie on and I'll prove it to you."

"Sorry Mon, don't have it." He smiled at her and she just pouted. "Liz you hate that movie, why would you think I would have it here for you?"

"So I can prove to you in times like these that she doesn't have a nose."

"Alright, alright, just be quiet and watch the movie."

"Fine!" Liz said and stuck her tongue out at him." When she saw what movie it was she got so excited. "TOY STORY!! Max I LOVE Toy Story."

"I know." he laughed. "You always say that I'm Woody and you're the female Buzz."

"That's right I'm the female Buzz cuz...."

She was stopped as Max finished her sentence. "Cuz if we were both toys you'd be the cooler more popular one. I know I know, you've only told me like a thousand times."

"Hmph" Liz wined as she crossed her arms and tryed to act annoyed.

"Liz do you realize that tomorrow we're gonna be in high school?! We never really talked about it."

"I know! But what do you mean? what is there to talk about?" She looked really confused.

"I dunno. When you get to high school, you usually start dating...and I mean like real dating, not what you and Sean did." That got Max a smack on the arm.

"Shut up Chand!"

"Haha I'm sorry. But seriously, We're going into a big school and a lot of middle schools are going into it, what if we don't have any classes together, or we make new friends, or you leave me for your hot senior boyfriend..."

"Max first of all, I doubt the senior guys would even look at me, and second, I could never leave you! You're my best friend and you will be until the end no matter what." Max just nodded and they were silent for a little while just watching the movie. "Let's make a pact right now. That no matter what happens, we'll always be best friends. Even when your senior girlfriend gets in the way." They both laughed at that.

"Yeah right, like that would happen." Max said. Liz just gave him a look. "Ok, fine. We'll always be friends no matter what, whether I get a girlfriend or you get a boyfriend, we'll always put our friendship first."

As they did their "BFF Handshake" Liz said "Cuz chicks before dicks."

and Max answered back with "And bros before hoes."

They shared a laugh and then gave each other a hug, then went back to watching Toy Story. Both of them secretly knowing that once they entered high school, things would change.

For those of you that wanted to know...You'll just have to keep reading and see if their nicknames for each other are just a coincidence haha. For the record, I did take into consideration that at this point of Friends, it was before London.
Now on with the story!

Chapter 2

**BEEP!!! BEEP!!!! BEEP!!!**
Liz woke up to the sound of Max's annoying alarm that he of course could never wake up to. She let out a sleepy yet annoyed grunt and rolled over and hit Max. "MAX!" she screamed while hitting him.

"Ow what the fuck Liz! What the hell did you do that for." Max spat back angrily.

"Maybe if that annoying alarm of yours could actually wake you up, I wouldn't have had to do it. Now shut the damn thing off, it's giving me a headache."

He smirked at her. "What?" she asked.

"You really aren't a morning person are you?"

"Max, how many times have we gone over this? No...I'm not. I like to get my beauty rest." He just laughed at her. "Shut up! Now I have to go home to get changed because today is our first day of high school. I'll call you before my mom and I head over, you know she's gonna wanna take pictures of us."

"Of course, gotta love Nan and her camera."

"Don't make fun of my mother." She smacked his arm and stuck her tongue out at him. Then she got off of the bed and left. "Peace out cub scout!"

Max laughed and just said goodbye before he hopped out of bed and took a shower.

Liz called Max about an hour later and headed over to his house with her mom.

"Hey Mrs P!" Max went up to Nancy Parker and gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. "I see you've brought your best friend Mr. Camera." He smiled at her.

"Hello Max, yes I did. You know this camera loves you."

"Who doesn't?"

"I don't!" Liz said matter of factly.

"Thanks a lot Mon." Max was very insulted by that.

"Anytime Chand" Liz said with a giant grin on her face.

"Ok you two. Stand together and pretend to like each other." Diane Evans said to them.

So Max and Liz stood together in the Evans' house posing for countless pictures to remind them of their first day at West Roswell High.

"Ok I'm done. I see spots which isn't good so I think that means it's time to head to school."

They said goodbye to Mrs Evans and then went outside and got into Mrs Parker's car. "You kids excited?" She asked the two of them who were sitting in the backseat.

"Eh, it's just another year of school. It shouldn't be too bad" Liz said, but deep down she was terrified. She just had this feeling that despite the pact they made, that somewhere along the next four years she was going to lose Max, and she would rather die than lose her best friend.

The car stopped in the West Roswell High parking lot and Max and Liz got out of the car after saying goodbye to Nancy. "Have fun kids!" she screamed after them as they were walking into the building.

"Liz, don't be nervous, I'll always be here. We made a pact remember?" Max could tell Liz was lying in the car. He had a feeling that what they talked about last night was still effecing her.

"I know Max, I know." Liz let out a big sigh. Then she looked up at the sign that told them where their homerooms would be.

"Look, My homeroom is right there, yours is a couple classrooms down. We won't be too far from each other. How about we meet right here before lunch so we can eat together. Sound good?"

"Yeah. Sounds great." She managed a smile. Then Max kissed her on the cheek and gave her a hug.

"I'll see you soon Mon."

"Ok, bye Chand." They let go of each other and headed in their seperate directions to get to their homeroom.

"Hello everyone and welcome to West Roswell High! My name is Miss Hardy and I'll be your homeroom teacher. This is homeroom 3D. We'll see eachother at this time everyday for about 15 minutes until you go on with your school day. Before we do anything I would like everyone to stand up and take a seat where I tell you to. These will be your assigned seats until I get to know all of you." Pointing to the first desk she called out the first girl's name. "Maria DeLuca. You will sit here." A girl with very short blond hair walked over to the first seat and sat down. A tall girl with long black hair sat behind her followed by a rather large boy who looked like he was probably on the football team. "Isabel Evans you'll sit here and Max Evans will sit behind her." Miss Hardy looked at the two of them. "Are you guys related?"

"Cousins" Isabel replied.

"Well isn't that special." Miss Hardy then continued along assigning the seats until she got to the last person. "And finally Michael Guerin. You will sit here. Now, is everyone ok? Good. I just have some papers to hand out to you all and then I will hand you your schedule, show you where your locker is, and you will be on your way."

Meanwhile in a classroom down the hall. Mr Seligman was in there with his homeroom. "Hello homeroom 8D! My name is Mr. Seligman and you will be mine for the first 15 minutes of the school day every day. Aren't you all so lucky? Where you are sitting right now is where you will sit every day for the rest of the year so it will be easy for me to take attendance. Now I am going to pass around this sheet and you will fill in your name where your seat is."

Liz was thrilled when she realized that her homeroom would be in the biology room. She loved science and wouldn't be able to take bio until next year. She said at a lab table next to a tall lanky guy. He kinda reminded her of an extremely dorky Max.

"Hi, I'm Alex. Alex Whitman. I just moved to Roswell and don't really know anyone." the lanky boy said to her as they were waiting for the paper to be passed around.

"Liz Parker," She held out her hand to shake his. "Nice to meet you. Welcome to Roswell."

"Thanks" he said.

"Where did you move here from?" She asked him.

"Seattle."

"Wow! So this is definitely a change for you! I moved here when I was 9 so I know what you're going through. But don't worry Roswell isn't so bad."

"Thanks. Where did you used to live?"

"Philly."

"Sweet! I've always wanted to go there."

"Its awesome. You should defitnitely go sometime."

Alex was going to say something but the paper got to their table and they filled in there names. Then Mr Seligman started talking again.

"Ok. This is your schedule, and these are very important papers you have to take home to your parents. On top of your schedule you will see a number. That number is your locker number. You may notice when you go to your locker that there are no locks there...up here on my desk are boxes of locks. You give me $5, I give you a lock for you to put on your locker. Any questions?"

A girl raised her hand and Mr Seligman called on her. "How will we know the combination to the lock?"

"Excellent question Miss...."

"Troy, Pam Troy"

"Ah...Miss Troy. Inside the box will have the combination to your lock. Memorize it and put the paper with the combination on it in a safe place. Any other questions? No? Alright then follow me."

Mr Seligman took the class in the hallway to show them where their lockers would be. Peopls that had the money bought their locks and put them on their lockers and were all set to go. Liz and Alex compared schedules and found out they have English, History and lunch together. The bell rang signaling that it was time to head to their first class. Liz and Alex said goodbye and they would see each other in their classes later on.

Miss Hardy has given her class the same shpeel (sp?) about locks and lockers and showed her homeroom where their lockers were. Max's lovker was right next to Michael Guerin.

"Hey...Michael right?" Max said to him.

"Yeah...um..." Michael had a confused look on his face.

"Max...Max Evans."

"Nice to meet you."

"You too."

Michael saw Max's scheudle in his hand. "Hey...let me see that...maybe we have some classes together." He looked it over and they ended up having lunch, science, and math together. "Sweet, we have lunch together and we can keep each other awake during science and math."

Mac just laughed. "Awesome man." Just then the blond girl that sat in the front of their homeroom game up to Michael and gave him a kiss.

"Max, this is my girlfriend Maria."

Max held out his hand to shake hers. "Nice to meet you." Just as she was about to answer him the bell rang and it was time to head to first period. "I'll see you second period in math. Bye Maria."

"Alright, see ya later bro" Michael said then walked away with Maria hand in hand.

Looks like this day was going pretty good so far. Max just hoped Liz was in atleast one of his classes and he also hoped she was ok.



Sunday! but most likely sooner lol

Hey everyone! Sorry I didn't get a chance to update early like I wanted to but there will definitely be an early update this week. Like Monday or Tuesday haha cuz I won't be around Wed-Sun. I'll be chasing the Backstreet Boys around! haha.

ok on with the next chapter! It's gonna be kinda slow because this chapter is pretty much just getting to know the characters....but I promise the next chapter will begin to actually get into the story and move along quickly

Chapter 3

First period Max had English and didn't really know anyone in the class. He couldn't wait until it was over so he could get to Math since Michael was in his class. All he could think of during English was that Liz wasn't there and he hoped she was doing ok.

The bell rang and first period was finally over. Off to Math! On his way there, Max was walking past some lockers and noticed a familiar girl so he ran up to her and put his hands over her eyes.

"Guess who!"

The girl immediately knew who it was and turned around and jumped into Max's arms.

"HEY!" she screamed. "How's your day going so far?"

"Pretty good I guess. I made a few friends but that last class was really boring. What about you?"

"It's ok. I just had Art which was a lot of fun."

"That's good. Hey! What's your schedule...maybe we have classes together" Max said excitedly.

"Oh um...here!" Liz gave Max her schedule and they looked at it together. "Three classes together!" They both had huge grins on their faces.

"Sweet! Alright I better head off to math. I'll meet you here beofre lunch ok?"

"Ok sounds great. See ya later Chand." They hugged before they parted ways again.

"Bye Mon." He screamed to her as he headed down the hallway.

Max walked into Math and saw an open desk next to Michael."Hey man. What's up?"

"Not much. How was your last class?" Michael asked.

"It sucked ass. What about you?"

"It was fun. It was art so it's prety much a joke class." Michael laughed.

"Oh yeah? My best friend just had art. I wonder if you guys were in the same class."

"Most likely...I think there is only one art room. Who's your friend?"

"Liz Parker."

"Liz Parker..hmmmm...." He put his finger to his chin as he was thinking if the name sounded familiar. "Cute, short, and has long dark hair?"

"Yep thats her!"

"Cool...I'll have to talk to her next class."

"Yeah shes the best. We've been best friends ever since she moved here."

"Cool..." Michael got cut off by their teacher as their class began.

Second Period with Liz

She walked into her English classroom and took a seat. No one was sitting next to her until a few moments later a girl with short blonde hair entered the room.

"Is anyone sitting here?" She asked Liz.

"No. Go ahead."

"Thanks. I'm Maria DeLuca."

"Liz Parker. Nice to meet you."

"You too."

All of a sudden they heard guys whistling and looked up to see a tall girl with long blonde hair enter the room. Isabel. Isabel ignored all of the guys and walked over towards Liz, said hello and sat in the seat in front of her. After getting all of her stuff situated she turned around in her seat.

"How have you been Liz? I feel like I haven't seen you in forever!" Isabel said to her.

"I've been really good. How about you?"

"Pretty good." She then looked at Maria. "You're in homeroom 3D right?"

"Yeah. I thought you looked familiar. I'm Maria DeLuca."

"Isabel Evans."

The three girls chatted a little bit more and then stopped when the teacher came in and class began. After class, Liz headed to History which she found out not only was Alex in her class with her, but Maria as well. She was so happy she had made a new girl friend. She had always had Max, but she couldn't really talk to him about some things. She liked that her and Isabel had classes together, because although they had been friends since she was Max's cousin, now they could get to know each other better and hopefully become closer.

While Liz was in History, Max was in PE with Isabel. Since it was the first day, they didn't have to change or do anything major, it was pretty much just a study hall. They found out that boys had gym on Mondays and Wednesdays, and then study on tuesday thursday and friday, and the girls had gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays and study hall on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays.

After gym Max and Isabel met Liz at her locker so they could head to lunch. Liz was there with Alex since he had lunch fourth period too. Liz introduced Alex to Max and Isabel and they all headed the cafeteria. While they were looking for a table, Max spotted Maria and Michael and a table and headed over there.

"Hey guys, mind if we join you?" Max asked them.

"No not at all bro." Michael replied.

Max, Isabel, Liz, and Alex all took a seat at the table and introduced themselves to the people they didn't know. Liz thought it was great that it was the first day of school and already she had a group of friends. SHe just hoped they could stay friends throughout the next four years.

Lunch seemed to go by rather quickly and they all agreed to sit with each other again tomorrow. Liz and Maria found out they had Math together fifth period so they headed off there together while Max and Alex headed off to History and the rest of the group headed off in different directions.

Fifth period came and went and then it was time for Science. Max and Liz we so happy they had an actual class together and not just lunch. They were also happy that Michael was in there class too! Mr Selgman was their teacher and let them all choose where they wanted to sit just like he had done in Liz's homeroom. Obviously the 3 of them sat together which made them all very happy.

Next Liz was off to PE with Maria while Max headed off to his "Surf the Net" class with Alex. He took it expecting it to be an easy A...little did he know how much work he was going to get. They already had a big assignment and it was the first day!

Finally it was eighth period and Liz and Max had a class together just the two of them...Italian. They sat next to each other in that class and already got in trouble for talking. The teacher said it was fine if they talked to each other but it had to be in Italian. This made them pay attention in class so they could actually talk to each other and not get in trouble.

The first day of school went great and Max and Liz were relieved that it had gone so well. Hopefully it would continue on like this for the rest of the year but Liz had this feeling that she wouldn't be so lucky.

Since I won't be around Wed-Sun I'm updating this today. The next update should be either Monday or Tuesday and then i'm leaving for europe for 2 1/2 weeks. Hopefully I'll get internet access at some point but i doubt it. I'll try to update a few time during the week i get back to make up for it!

anyway...thank you sooooo much for all the feedback. I was really unhappy with the last chapter but like I said it was just to introduce everyone and you're feedback made me feel so much better about it so thank you!

Honestly I haven't decided yet if the gerbil will make an appearance...I'm really not fond of her at all so I don't know if I want her in the story haha. But you should know that what the writer wants to happen doesn't always happen cuz the characters take control! haha

Chapter 4

Fortunately the rest of the year went off without a hitch. She had great friends and her and Max were closer than ever. Their freshman year had ended and their little group had become one of the cliques of the W Roswell High freshman class. For years it had always been just Max and Liz and the 2 of them were both happy to include 4 other wonderful people into the group.

It was now a couple weeks before their sophomore year, Max had gotten his license a month ago, and him and Liz were laying in Liz's bed just laughing at the fact that they thought high school would change them and separate them.

"I can't believe we actually thought that. And ya know what Max?"

"What?" he said to her.

"We always thought that our friendship was so strong and that nothing could break it up and I think this year we truly proved how true that is. I mean we went through a lot and always came out on top cuz we were always there for each other."

Max looked at her for a while, smiled, and then kissed her forehead. "You're right Mon...nothing will ever break us apart."

Just then her phone started to ring.

"Hello?......OH MY GOD HI!!! How are you!?....I'm great. You're WHAT?! Oh my god thats fantastic. For how long?...awesome....ok.....uh huh.......uh huh......OF COURSE YOU CAN!....ok see you soon. bye."

Liz hung up the phone and looked at a very confused Max who had his finger in his ear trying to recover from her screaming. She had the biggest smile on her face.

"Who was that?" Max asked.

"Remember my best friend from Philly, Ernie?"

"Yeah..."

"That was her, she's coming out to visit tomorrow for a week and she's gonna stay here."

Max had a disappointed look on his face but he tried to make it seem like he was excited for her. "Oh....that's great Liz. When was the last time you saw her?"

"God I don't know....probably right before I moved." They both sat there in silence for a moment. "Oh my god this is gonna be just like old times I can't wait!" They sat in silence for another moment. Liz had the hugest grin on her face. "I'll be right back" she patted his leg 2 times and got up from her bed and left the room.

"Ok" Max said, and when Liz left the room he had this look on his face like his dog just died. "So much for nothing tearing our friendship apart" he said to himself.

The next day Liz called Max and asked him if he wanted to go to the airport with her. At first he said no because he didn't want to intrude on their little reunion, but Liz insiststed saying that she wanted her bestest friend in the entire world to meet her oldest friend. So he caved and decided to go.

Liz walked over to Max's house and hopped in his jeep and honked the horn. "LET'S GO SLOW POKE!!!" she screamed from his car.

Max came running out of his house. "Jesus Liz, must you do that all the time?"

"Yeo cuz it pissed you off." She said matter of factly with a smirk on her face.

Max playfully punched her arm and drove them to the airport to pick up Ernie. "So what's her real name?"

"Erin, I started calling her Ernie when we were about 4, I don't really remember why, I do know that we were both obsessed with Sesame Street though so that probably had a lot to do with it."

Max just laughed and she looked at him.

"What's so funny?"

"Nothing, it's just....you"

"Thanks a lot Evans."

He looked at her with a smile on his face and then looked back to the road and continued driving.

About 20 minutes later they were at the airport and were waiting in the terminal to pick her up.

"Lizzie?" Liz heard

"Oh my God Ernie!!" They ran to each other and hugged. "Look at you, you look fanastic."

"Me? Look at you. You've grown up dude!"

The girls just laughed and then Ernie looked over Liz's shoulder and saw Max. "Oh is this the infamous Max that I hear about all the time?"

"Yeah...Ernie, meet my best friend in the whole world Max Evans."

"Nice to meet you" Max said as he stared into Ernie's eyes.

"Yeah, nice to meet you too." She said with the same look on her face and they shook hands.

Liz seemed to notice the look between her two friends and immediately thought of a plan. She smiled to her self then clapped her hands and said "Well shall we head home?"

Neither of them answered. "Guys?" Liz said..."Hellloo?"

"What? Oh sorry Liz, yeah let's head home." Max said and then asked Ernie if she needed help with her bags.

The car ride home was filled with Liz and Ernie catching up and Ernie and Max learning a little about each other.

When they pulled up into Liz's driveway Max helped Ernie bring her stuff into Liz's house and then helped her get settled. He looked at his watch and noticed he needed to get to work. He apologized and gave Liz a kiss on the cheek and shook Ernie's hand and said "It was nice meeting you. Bye guys"

"You too. Bye Max" Ernie said

"See ya Chand"

Liz had called Maria and Isabel over so the four of them could have a girls night. Maria and Isabel immediately fell in love with Ernie. She was the complete opposite of Liz. Ernie was like a surfer girl all about the beach, while Liz was a girly girl who hated the outdoors. It was amazing that the two of them were such good friends, but they compliment each other very well.

The girls had girl talk all night and this is when Liz decided to bring up Max. "So Ernie, What did you think of Max?"

"He was hot dude!" Ernie said. She's always telling it like it is,

The four girls just laughed. "I think he thinks the same thing about you....Maria, Isabel...come here for a second...let's chat." Liz said.

Liz Maria and Isabel got into a little huddle then went back to Ernie.

"Ok Ernie," Isabel started. "We have decided to set up you and Max. So tomorrow at this time you two will be on a date. How does that sound?"

"How does that sound?" Sernie asked. "That sounds fucking awesome dude!"

Maria and Isabel ended up sleeping over Liz's that night and the four girls just talked until all hours of the night about EVERYTHING. Liz called up Max and confirmed the date. He was hesitant at first but he could never say no to Liz when she worked her charm on him so he eventually caved like he always does.

Max and Ernie's date went great and they spent a lot of time together while she was in town. Liz didn't really mind because she loved seeing both of her best friends happy.

Hoever, when it was time for Ernie to go back home, her and Max were having a hard time parting.

"Erin, can you please stay?"

"I can't Max. but we'll visit each other. I promise! I'll come back during thanksgiving break and you guys can all come out for New Year's! New Year's is mad crazy in philly dude"

"Ok sounds like a plan." He kissed her lips softly and then whispered against her lips "I'll miss you babe"

"Not as much as I'll miss you." SHe said and kissed him once again, but this time more passionately. They broke apart when they heard Liz clear her throat.

"Sorry to cut you guys off but I wanted to say goodbye to Ernie before she leaves me."

"Oh my God Lizzie I'm so sorry we didn't get to spend much time together,"

"Seriously, don't worry about it. I'm glad you guys are happy. I'm the one that set you guys up anyway so it's my own fault." Liz laughed. "Have a safe trip home and call me as soon as you land"

"Ok I will. bye dude!"

"Bye man!"

"Liz, what do I always tell you? You can't pull that off" The two girls laugh.

"I know I know. But it's still fun to say!"

Ernie just laughed at her. "whatever you say. later!"

"Bye Mon"

"See ya later Chand"

Liz watched as Ernie and Max walked away hand in hand to his car as he drove her to the airport. She knew they'd want some time alone together to told them she had to work and couldn't go along with them. As she watched them drive away she started to think if setting them up was such a good idea in the first place.....



Monday or Tuesday!

I'M BACK!!!! Sorry it took me forever and a day but along with getting settled in school, I also had a huge case of writer's block. Thanks to all the readers who left feedback and to all the lurkers as well. Hopefully they'll come out of hiding and leave some FB as well. Even if it's critical...it's always good to learn on what I can improve on since I'm new to writing. Anyway...on with the story!

Chapter 5

A couple months had gone by since Ernie left and Liz was feeling very excluded from the people around her....especially Max. Him and Ernie had been talking on the phone everyday for hours at a time. She felt like she was losing her best friend and she got really scared.

She looked around to all of her other friends and they had all paired up. Michael and Maria, Isabel and Alex, and now Max and Ernie. She began to feel like she wasn't good enough for anyone and began to get extremely depressed. However she kept it inside and no one ever noticed.

She thought that maybe if she started keeping a journal and writing down how she was feeling it would help her cope, so that's exactly what she did.

Dear Journal,

Ernie came to visit a few months ago and I introduced her to Max. I think that was a huge mistake because now he barely talks to me. He's always on the phone with her for hours and hours at a time. He used to come over here and we'd just hang out and talk about EVERYTHING but now he does that with her. I guess it's weird because now I have to share Max. I've never had to do that before and I don't like it at all. I know it sounds selfish but it's how I feel. Does that make me a bad person?
I saw Michael and Maria together the other day. They didnt see me. I was taking a run through the park and I saw them from a far having a picnic and being all....coupley. I then started to think how everyone else has someone and I don't. What's wrong with me? Am I not pretty enough? Or am I too boring? It's really starting to get to me and I know it shouldn't but it does....

Liz then got distracted by an incessant tapping on her window. She looked up and saw who it was so she casually put her journal down and walked over to the window to let him in.

"Hey Mon!" Max said all excited to see her.

"Hey there stranger. What's up?" She replied.

Max looked at her funny when she called him a stranger. "Stranger? What's that about?" He wasn't gonna lie, it hurt that she felt that way towards him.

"Nothing...what do you want?" She said trying not to sound hurt that he didn't realize what he was doing to her.

"I don't want anything. Can't I just come over and hang out with my best friend?" Max was really confused. He couldn't figure out what was going on with Liz.

"Yeah sure, it's just....ya know, we haven't really done this in a while." She paused for a little bit. "So how's Ernie?" She asked as she put her hands in her back pockets and walked over to her desk to sit down. While Max plopped down on her bed.

"She's great. She's coming out this weekend. I can't wait! I miss her so much Liz. I don't know what it is, but I've never felt this way about anyone before."

"Max you've only been dating for a couple months and you've only seen and hung out with her for a couple days out of those months." Liz said disbelievingly.

"I don't know. It's just....ahhh i can't explain it!" He sighed as he dropped back on the bed so he was laying on his back.

Liz just sat at her desk with her head looking down at her hands in her lap. Max moved his hand on the bed and felt her journal. He sat up and started to open it.

"Hey what's this?" he asked.

Liz's head snapped up. "Don't read that!" She yelled as she ran over to get her journal.

"Woah, take a chill pill there." Max said very taken aback by her snappy tone.

"Sorry it's my journal. I don't want people reading it."

"Liz, I know everything about you, all of your deepest and darkest secrets. What could you possibly have written in there that I don't know about?"

"You'd be surprised." She whispered under her breath.

"What was that?" Max asked.

"Oh nothing, forget it." She said as she turned to put the journal in her closet.

Max started to realize how weird Liz was asking and he started to get worried. He got off of the bed and began to walk towards her. "Hey...you ok?

"Hmmm?" She said as she turned around and saw that she was face to face with him. "Oh! um...yeah...yeah I'm fine." She walked past him to go sit at her desk again. But she felt Max's hand on her arm and she turned around.

"You'd tell me if you weren't right?" He asked very concerned.

"Yeah of course! You know I would."

"You sure? Cuz I feel like you're hiding something from me, and we've never done that before...and I don't like it."

"Max relax! I'm fine. See?" She put a huge smile on her face but Max could tell she was faking it.

"Ok." He said disappointedly. "I'm gonna go." He then began to walk over to the window. If you need anything....please don't hesitate to call me ok?"

"I will. Thank you."

"Anytime Mon...I don't know what I'd do without you."

"Right back at ya." She said with a smile. But as soon as he crawled out of her window she collapsed on her bed and just started to cry. She couldn't believe that he didn't realize how much he had been ignoring her and she got really sad knowing that her best friend was slipping away.

A couple days later was the weekend and with the weekend came Ernie. Liz had to admit she was excited to see her friend but at the same time upset because she knew that Max would be spending all of his time with Ernie and not her.
Once again Liz was on her bed writing in her journal when she heard a knock on the door and then somone come in. She put her journal under her pillow and went downstairs since she knew it would be Max and Ernie.

"LIZZIE!!" Ernie screamed.

"Hey Ernie." Liz said trying to sound enthusiastic as she put a real smile on her face and hugged her friend. "Hey Max"

"Hey." Max could see through Liz's facade and it was really starting to worry him.

"How have you been? I haven't talked to you in forever!" Liz asked Ernie.

"I know man! I've been really good what about you?"

"I've been ok. Ya know, keeping myself busy"

"That's cool." There was then an awkward silence. "We're actually going to the movies tonight. Do you wanna come?"

"I don't want to intrude if you guys are going on a date."

"Don't be silly Liz, you won't be intruding." Max told her as he put his arm around her shoulders.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah man! I haven't seen you in forever and I want to hang out with you."

"Ok..sure."

"Awesome dude! It's a date don't be square."

Max and Liz just looked at each other and then at Ernie and said, "What?!"

"hahahahhaha sorry dudes! Inside joke...nevermind."

"ok...listen I have to go to work but um..I guess I'll see you guys tonight?"

"Yep! Have fun Lizzie." Ernie told her.

"Thanks See ya later guys."

"Bye Liz." Max said, still convinced that something was up with Liz.

Max and Ernie went over to Max's house and layed on his bed just enjoying being together.

"So are you gonna tell me what's bugging you?" Ernie asked him as she had her head on his chest and he was playing with her hair.

"It's nothing...it's just.......did Liz seem weird to you today?"

"No, not at all. Why?"

"She doesn't have a job." He blurted out.

"What do you mean?" She asked him picking herself up to look at him.

"I mean just that...she doesn't have a job. So why did she say she did?"

"Maybe she does and you just don't know."

"She's my best friend, Erin. I'm pretty sure I would know if had a job or not. I'm with her all the time and when I'm not with her we're on the phone."

"Max, that's not true." Ernie said and Max looked at her like she was crazy.

"What do you mean that's not true. Of course it is!"

"No it's not. Max we're always on the phone, so how can u always be with Liz?"

And that's when it hit him. She was right. He hadn't realized it until right now that him and Liz have barely talked lately because he was giving all his time to Ernie.

"C'mon babe, cheer up. It'll be ok...just talk to her." She said trying to make him feel better.

"You're right. Thanks Erin." He said and then gave her a kiss. The kiss soon grew more passionate and before they knew it clothes were being thrown everywhere. Just as Max was about to take her breast in his mouth, his cell phone rang. "Fuck." He said. "Sorry, it's my mom I have to get it."

"It's alright." Ernie said. She watched Max pick up the phone and she started to put her clothes back on. When Max got off the phone she told him she was hungry and wanted to go get something to eat before the movie. He agreed, put his shirt on and took her hand to go to dinner.

They pulled up to the Crashdown Cafe and Ernie got a kick out of the whole alien theme of the whole place. They went and sat in a booth while they waited to be helped.

Meanwhile, Liz was in the back room with Maria. Maria had caught her crying on her break and made her spill. She told Maria everything and Maria just held her and told her it would all be ok. Finally Liz realized she had to get back to work and went outside to a booth, her eyes still a little puffy and red.

"Welcome to the Crashdown, I'm Liz I'll be your waitress for the evening. Can I get you something to drink?" Liz said while looking for her pad and a pen in her apron.

Max just sat there with his mouth wide open. Liz looked up and realized who she was waiting on. "Oh! Hey guys!"

"Hey man, nice outfit." Ernie said trying to hold back her laugh.

"Ha. Ha." Liz said sticking her tongue out at her. "So what can I get you guys?"

"Just a water for me dude."

"Okay, and what about you Max?"

"Ummmm....a cherry coke please."

"Coming right up!"

Liz got their drinks, then took their order and went into the back room to find Maria still on her break.

"Maria they're out there.....in my section!"

"What am I gonna do Maria?"

"Listen, for now just act cool. Don't let him know that it bothers you ok?"

"Alright. Okay I can do that. Just act cool." She checked herself in the mirror to make sure you couldn't tell she was crying then went and gave Max and Ernie their food...

Just to clarify something....yes Ernie sounds like a boy lol. She's based off of one of my best friends and she is a surfer girl and that is literally how she talks lol. Sorry for the confusion!

Chapter 6

Liz gave them their drinks, took their order, and brought their food. As she was clearing their plates she told them she'd be right back with the check.

"I'm gonna go to the bathroom real quick." Max told Ernie.

"Ok"

Max walked into the bathroom and just as he was about to exit voices stopped him.

"Maria, I hate this. What am I gonna do? I can't stand seeing them together."

I know we've been friends forever
But now I think I'm feeling something totally new

"Liz why is it that it bothers you so much?"

"I don't know Maria."

And after all this time I opened up my eyes
Now I see you were always with me

"I think you do and you just aren't admitting it to yourself."

"What are you talking about?"

Could it be you & I never imagined
Could it be suddenly I'm fallin' for you

"Think about it Liz. Max is a very good looking guy. You and him are closer than anyone I've ever seen. You know pretty much everything about each other. Can you honestly tell me you just have friendly feelings towards him?"

Could it be you were right here beside me and I never knew

"Maria that's crazy..."

"Liz." She gave Liz a piercing glare.

"Maria....no we're best friends....well atleast we were best friends." Liz said and then she ran into the back room.

Could it be that it's true that it's you.

Maria ran after her and Max exited the bathroom very confused. *What did she mean were best friends. Of course we're best friends!* He made a mental note to himself at that moment to talk to Liz about that.

Meanwhile in the backroom....

Liz was on the couch hysterical crying. She looked up and saw Maria. "Oh my God Maria. You're right. I'm in love with Max. What am I gonna do?"

"Shhh come here chica." Maria went over to Liz and held her in her arms. "It's ok Liz. Maybe you should talk to him and tell him your feelings."

Liz shook her head no. "I can't do that. He's so happy with her Maria. All telling him would do is make it awkward between us and I'd lose my best friend."

"Maybe you're right....or maybe he's just with her because he has the same feelings for you and was afraid of the same thing." Liz just gave her a look. "I mean it Liz. I've seen the way he looks at you. I really think he loves you too."

"Are their drugs in that cypress oil you're always sniffing?"

"No why?"

"Because I think you're on something. Max is not in love with me." There was a long pause. "I better go get them their check...and tell them I'm not going to the movies with them."

Liz walked out wiped her eyes and headed over to give Max and Ernie their check. "Here guys just pay up there when you're ready."

"Hey you ok?" Max asked her.

"Yeah why?"

He paused. "Nothing, nevermind"

Liz gave him a look and then said, "Oh! I almost forgot to tell you, someone called out so I won't be able to go to the movies tonight. Sorry guys. I'm sure you'll have fun without me."

"Awww. That sucks dude. Another time k?" Ernie said.

"You got it." Liz said and then left to check on her other tables.

"Ready babe?" Max asked Ernie.

"Yep. Let's go pay."

The two of them walked up to the counter and Maria went up and took care of them. Max was a little disappointed but he couldn't do anything about it and waved to Liz before he walked out the crashdown doors with Ernie's hand in his.

Liz got home about an hour after they left. Luckily no one was home so she went straight to her room and laid on her bed and cried. She cried and cried and then grabbed her journal to write.

Dear Journal,
I realized today just why Max and Ernie together bothers me so much. I"ve fallen in love with him. I've fallen in love with my best friend and I don't know what to do. I wish it didn't have to be so complicated but now it is and nothing will ever be the same. He's with her, and he's so happy. He'll never feel this way about me because he probably thinks of me as a sister. What am I gonna do? I can't tell him because that will fuck up our friendship BIG time. HELP! I feel like I'm suffocating too. Especially when I see them together. It's like someone stabbed me in my heart and is just twisting the knife around. God I hate that feeling. I feel like such a bitch too because I'm the one that introduced them and esentially "set them up". It's my fault and now I'm paying the consequences of seeing my 2 best friends happy and having me just stuck here being so fucking depressed.

She threw her journal on her bed and layed down and cried herself to sleep.

When Max and Ernie got back, they noticed the light on in Liz's room.

"Looks like Liz got out of work early. Let's go see her." Ernie said.

"Ok" They got out of the car and knocked on the door. No one answered. So they rang the doorbell. Again nothing. They looked at each other and decided to just walk in. "Liz?" Max called out. But he got no answer. He walked upstairs to her room. "Liz?" he said just above a whisper. She was on her bed.

"She must have passed out after work." Ernie said.

"Yeah...I'll just write her a note and then we can go back to my house if you want."

"Ok. Just for a little while cuz I'm really tired."

Max wrote Liz a note, left it on the empty side of her bed, turned off her light and left.

Ernie and Max laid around his house for a little while just talking about nothing. He could tell Ernie was getting tired so he walked her over to Liz's house kissed her good night and told her he'd see her in the morning.

Liz was still sleeping when Ernie got there, so she went to the guest room and fell asleep. About an hour later Liz woke up and found a note next to her.

Dear Liz,
We saw your light on and popped in to see you but you were sleeping. I really want to talk to you. Maybe when you wake up you can call me and you can come over and we can have one of our old talks. I miss that...we haven't done it in a while. In fact I just miss you Mon. Call me when you wake up.

Love,
Max

Liz read the note and then pulled out her cell phone and dialed the number she knew so well.

"Hey sleepyhead"

"Hey Chand. I got your note."

"Oh good. Do you want to come over?"

"Sure I'd really like that. I'll be right over."

"K bye Mon."

"Bye"

Liz realized she was still in her Crashdown uniform so she quickly changed into some sweatpants and a tank top and quietly left her house and headed over to Max's.

Chapter 7

She knocked on his door which was something she didn't usually do. Usually she just walked in but for some reason she felt more comfortable knocking.

Max ran down the stairs and opened the door. "Hey!" he said and engulfed her in a huge hug. "Why did you knock?"

"Oh..um...i figured the door was locked...sorry" she replied.

"No big deal...just wondering. C'mon" he said with a wave of his hand and she followed him upstairs.

They got upstairs and Liz immediately fell on his bed. She loved his bed. He had a down comforter and a down mattress pad. It was the most comfortable thing in the world.

"You better not fall asleep on that like you always do cuz I'm not carrying you home" Max joked.

"Shut up" she said and stuck her tongue out at him. "I wish my bed was this comfortable"

"I know you do. So you're just lucky that I like you and let you sleep on it whenever you feel like it."

"Gee thanks" she said sarcastically. She layed on the bed and just smiled. She had missed this. Just fooling around with Max. They hadn't done this since Ernie came to visit for the first time. "I've missed this"

"Missed what?" he asked joining her on the bed.

"This...you and me...joking around with each other...hanging out." she paused. "It seems like we haven't done it in ages." She said sadly.

"I know. I miss it too." They both just stared at each other in comfortable silence. "Liz can I ask you something?"

"You know you can. Why? What's up?"

He figited around a little bit before finally asking her, "Are you ok? I mean feeling ok?"

"Yeah why?" She asked confused.

He started to play with the comforter a little bit, tracing the lines and drawing imaginary shapes with his finger. "I dunno it's just that when Erin and I were at the Crashdown before, you looked like you had been crying, and then when we went to see you when we got back from the movie you had tear streaks down your face."

Liz sat there frozen. She didn't know what to say, but knew she had to think of something quick.

"Oh...you know how emotional I can be...little things just set me off." she said quickly.

"You'd tell me if something was bothering you right?" She just nodded and he continued although he didn't seem too convinced. "Good. Cuz I worry about you Mon. You're my best friend and I hate seeing you upset."

"I know. Thank you. I appreciate it" she said with a smile.

"So when did you start working at the Crashdown?"

"About a month and a half ago."

"Wow. Why didn't I know?"

"I guess you were just so caught up with Ernie."

"Liz..."

"No Max it's ok. She's your girlfriend."

"I know but..." Then he paused remembering something he overheard at the Crashdown today. "Liz I heard you say something to Maria today and it was really bothering me for a while."

"What did I say?" She asked worriedly.

"You said that we were best friends. What did you mean by that?"

She let out a sigh trying to think of how to say this and then said to him, "Max...you've been spending all your time either with Ernie when she's visiting or on the phone with her when she's not. I know it's stupid and selfish, but I miss you. I feel like I've lost you." a tear started to fall down her cheek, and Max wiped it away with his finger.

"Oh my God. Liz I'm so sorry. Come here" he said and hugged her. They stayed there hugging for a while. "I feel terrible. I didn't even realize I was doing it. Erin mentioned something to me that that was probably why I didn't know you had a job, but I didn't put 2 and 2 together when I heard you make that comment." He pulled away and held her face. "Can you ever forgive me?" He said making the cutest face.

"How can I say no to that face?" she laughed pinching his cheek. She then wiped her eyes and said, "So much for chicks before dicks and bros before hoes huh?"

"Liz..." Max said in an apologetic tone

"Sorry...it was meant to be a joke. Just remember this for when I ignore you when I get a boyfriend"

"Ha. Ha." He said and she playfully punched his arm. "I swear to you Liz, I'm gonna start being a better friend to you. You don't deserve being ignored and I honestly didn't even realize I was doing it to you."

"I know. Thank you" She smiled at him. "It's getting late, I better head back."

"Why don't you just stay here tonight?" he asked and it shocked Liz.

"Because your girlfriend is next door." She said laughing.

"She knows we're close, what's the big deal? It's not like we're gonna do anything."

Liz thought about it...and that bed was very comfy. "Ok fine. But only because I love your bed. It's just so damn comfortable"

Max just laughed, "You never cease to amaze me Mon."

"Right back at ya Chand" She smiled and got under the covers as Max turned off the light. "I'm glad we got to talk tonight." She said randomly.

"Me too. Good Night Liz"

"Good Night Max" *I love you* she thought to herself.

Liz and Max both went to bed thinking that all of their problems were solved. They both felt a lot better that they had talked to each other about everything...well almost everything. But what they didn't realize is that someone from next door watched their little interaction through the window and got very upset.

Ernie had woken up to get something to drink. She quietly went downstairs and turned the kitchen light on. When she went to the sink she looked out the window and noticed Max's light was on. She was going to sneak over but then she saw he had someone with him....Liz. She didn't think much of it at first but then she saw him hold her and wipe her tears away and then get into bed together. She couldn't help the tear that slipped down her cheek.

She stormed upstairs and wanted to go to bed when she realized she needed to get something out of Liz's room. However she got sidetracked when she saw a book on Liz's bed. She opened it up to a random page and began reading it.

"Dear Journal,

Ernie came to visit a few months ago and I introduced her to Max. I think that was a huge mistake because now he barely talks to me. He's always on the phone with her for hours and hours at a time. He used to come over here and we'd just hang out and talk about EVERYTHING but now he does that with her. I guess it's weird because now I have to share Max...."

Ernie couldn't believe what she was reading. She couldn't even finish that entry so she turned the page.

"Dear Journal,
I realized today just why Max and Ernie together bothers me so much. I"ve fallen in love with him. I've fallen in love with my best friend and I don't know what to do. I wish it didn't have to be so complicated but now it is and nothing will ever be the same. He's with her, and he's so happy. He'll never feel this way about me because he probably thinks of me as a sister..."

"Oh. My. God." was all Ernie could say before she closed the book, tossed it on the floor, and ran to her room.

Chapter 8

Liz woke up early from Max's and headed over to her house to find an extremely angry Ernie holding her journal sitting at the kitchen table.

"Morning Ernie!" Liz said cheerfully.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?"

"Excuse me?!" Liz said shocked.

Ernie held up the journal and Liz gasped and put her hand over her mouth.

"You read my....you read my journal?!! How dare you!"

"How dare me?! Liz you are in love with my boyfriend."

"Ernie you can not tell him! Promise me Ernie."

"Liz how am I supposed to not tell him?"

Liz took a deep breath. "Well because we've been best friends since we were in diapers."

"Liz..."

"Ernie, Max and I have been best friends since we were 8, I can't lose that friendship. He can't find out about this. You know these are just feelings that will eventually pass." She paused and they both stared at each other. "He's with you, and you make him so happy. I don't want to mess that up, and I know if he finds out the friendship that him and I have will be completely over....I can't lose him Ernie." Tears then started to pour down Liz's face. Ernie saw this and ran up to her and hugged her.

"Ok Liz, ok." She said rubbing her back. "I didn't mean to read it, I swear. I was in your room and I saw a book on your bed so I opened it to see what it was. That's when I saw what you wrote. I was just so afraid that you were gonna say something to him and I'd lose him too."

"So this stays between us right?" Liz verified

"Right."

"Ok good. Thank you."

"Liz...can I ask you something?"

"Sure"

"Why were you at Max's last night?"

"He left me a note telling me to call him when I woke up, so I did and I went over there to talk to him cuz we haven't really talked in a while. Why?"

"I was just wondering...I saw you over there...then I saw you get in his bed and I..."

"Ernie, seriously you have nothing to worry about. I sleep over Max's house all the time and vice versa. We've been doing it for ten years...it's seriously nothing."

"You sure?"

"I am absolutely positive."

"Ok."

"Look I'm gonna go for a run. I'll see you later ok?"

"Ok dude. Have fun"

"Oh thanks!" Liz said with a sarcastic smile on her face.

Liz changed into a sports bra and running shorts and was heading out the door when it came crashing into her face.

"OWWW!!! Son of a..."

"Shit! Liz are you ok?"

"Does it look like I'm ok Max?" Liz said as she ran to the bathroom. to clean up her bloody nose. "Max Evans this better not swell and turn black and blue or you will be a dead man." She screamed at him.

"Why you have a hot date to go to Friday night or something?" Max joked.

"Maybe I do." She said matter of factly.

"What?! You have a date and you didn't tell me." Max said in disbelief.

"I'd love to chat Max, but I have to go for my run. I swear to God if this thing is broken I'll kill you." She said and ran out the door.

Max stood there confused, then shook his head and went upstairs to find Ernie.

Liz was listening to her ipod as she was running around her block. "Shit!" she said to herself. "Shit shit shit!! Why the fuck did I have to tell him I have a date. Now I'm gonna have to find someone." She ran for a few minutes then stopped because she got the perfect idea. She turned around and ran home. "So my run will only be 2 miles today instead of 4...no biggie" She said to herself as she ran home. She got in the shower then grabbed her cell phone and sat outside on her hammock.

"Hello?" the person on the other end said.

"Hey Maria!"

"Hey Liz what's up?"

"I need you to do me a favor."

"okaaayy..."

"I need you to find me a date for Friday night."

"What?! What about Max?"

"What about him Maria? He's with her and I'm not messing that up and my friendship with him as well."

"Liz I told you..."

"No Maria...no. Just please will you find me one."

"Sure, but if you don't mind me asking...why?"

"IkindatoldMaxthatIhadone" she said really fast.

"You what?!"

"I kinda told Max that I had one."

"Why would you do that Liz why?"

"Maria it's a long story that I'll explain later just now you need to find me a date then call me back with who it is and when and all that good stuff."

"Ok Liz. But for the record I don't like this"

"Noted." with that she hung up. *I hope this works* she thought to herself.

Feeling nervous and excited at the same time, Liz ran upstairs to her room to pick out an outfit for her blind date on Friday. Even though she didn't know what the dress would be, she decided to pick out an outfit for all types of dates now, this way she didn't have to worry when it came to the actual day of the date. She was about to enter her room when she heard noises coming from Ernie's room. She stopped what she was doing and walked over to Ernie's door. That's when she heard it....moaning. "Oh my God" she quietly said to herself as she held back a loud gasp and ran downstairs with tears coming down her face. She went outside and ran to Maria's. She didn't care that it was a far distance she just had to run there.

Maria saw Liz running from her window and ran outside to see what was up. "Liz, Liz...what's wrong" she asked her seeing how upset Liz was.

"After I hung up with you I went upstairs to my room and I heard noises coming from Ernie's room. So I walked over to her door to make sure she was ok when I heard moaning." She had to stop because the tears were overpowering her. "Maria...her and Max were having sex." She would have collapsed to the ground right then if Maria hadn't caught her in a hug.

"Shh. Liz it's ok. It's gonna be ok."

"No it's not Maria. Max and I talked about sex once, and we made a pact that we'd lose our virginity together."

Maria didn't know what to say. She just stood outside and held Liz for as long as it took to calm her down.

Sorry Everyone. I've been so enthralled with my new story that I've been neglecting my other ones I figured since tomorrow is my birthday I'd update this and Troubled Soul today as a birthday present to you guys haha.

Chapter 9

Liz stayed at Maria's that night and a for a few days to follow. She needed to get her mind off of Max. Luckily Ernie was going back home that weekend so Liz could go back to her house once she left.

Maria had set Liz up on a date with her step brother Kyle. Kyle was a freshman at UNM and was home for winter break so they would be able to spend a lot of time together if things worked out.

Kyle and Liz immediately hit it off. He took her out to dinner and then they went go-carting. Liz hadn't had that much fun with someone in a long time.

Kyle dropped her off at home and walked her to the door.

"I had a really great time tonight Liz. For once I'm glad Maria can't keep her nose out of my business and set us up."

Liz laughed and nervously put her hair behind her ears. "Yeah me too."

They then looked into each other's eyes and then to their lips. Their faces drew closer together until their lips met. They both pulled back from each other and smiled. Liz then opened her door and before going in she said, "Good night Kyle."

"Good night Liz. I'll call you tomorrow."

"You better" she smiled and closed the door.

Kyle walked to his car with a huge grin on his face. But something or rather someone stopped him from smiling.

Max had been taking a walk and saw the whole exchange between Liz and Kyle and didn't like it one bit.

He walked over to Kyle's car and waited for him.

"Valenti" He said as Kyle approached his mustang.

"Hey Evans what's up."

"Listen, Liz is my very best friend in the whole world and if you do anything to hurt her, just know that I will hunt you down and make sure that you never go near any girl again." He pushed him and then walked towards his house without another word.

Kyle slowly got in his car making a mental note to talk to Liz about that and drove off.

Liz got a phone call from Kyle earlier in the day about the whole thing that happened with Max the night before. She was furious. She was on her way to his house right now to confront him about it.

She walked up to his front step and barged in his house.

"Max Evans where the fuck are you?!" she screamed running up his steps to his room.

"Hey Liz. What's wrong?" He said coming out of his room.

"What's wrong?! I'll tell you what's wrong. I went on a really nice date last night with a guy that I really like and he calls me today telling me that you threatened him." She was so mad that steam was about to come out her ears. "Why would you do that Max? Why?!"

"Liz..." he reached out his arm to her.

"No! Max I am not your property you have no right to do something like that." She said shrugging off his touch.

"Liz I was trying to protect you."

"Protect me from what?! I'm not in any danger. Kyle is a nice guy, he's a great guy and I don't need you ruining a possible relationship for me."

"Liz..."

"I'm not talking to you for a very long time." She said and stormed out of his house.

"Liz wait!" He screamed running after her but it was too late. She ran to her car ignoring his calls and drove off to God knows where.

Two years later...

Despite all of Max's trying, him and Liz were no longer friends. They graduated and hadn't said more than hi to each other in the two years since their dumb fight.

Max didn't understand why she was being like this but Liz had her reasons. The only way for her to get over Max was to just not talk to him. When she heard Ernie and him having sex, her heart broke into a thousand pieces and she just couldn't put it back together. Kyle was helping though.

Kyle and her had been going steady for two years. She never told him of her feelings to Max, nor did she ever tell him about their falling out. Kyle just assumed they were spending so much time with each other that Max and Liz's friendship just sort of faded.

Although Liz did love Kyle, and loved being with him, she didn't feel the same way about him that she felt about Max, and in a way that scared her.

Max and Ernie would be celebrating their three year anniversary together and Liz still hated seeing them together. There's just a pain inside her, a feeling of betrayal from both of her best friends that won't stop hurting.

Ernie was going to school at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and of course Max just had to follow her out there and just happened to end up going to the same school as Liz...the University of Pennsylvania. Liz was pissed when she found out that they'd be at the same school, but they way she looked at it was that the school was huge so the odds of them seeing each other was very little. He'd probably be spending most of his time at Ernie's anyway.

Kyle wanted to transfer to a Philly school too so he could be with Liz, but Liz didn't want him leaving all of his friends and his family just for her. They'd work out being in a long distance relationship.

Maria was heading to NYU so she could both major in music industry, and try to make it big in the music business. Liz was so proud of her and she knew that Maria would end up going places in her life.

Liz said goodbye to Kyle and drove off to UPenn with her parents. It would be a very long trip but a well needed trip away from Roswell and back to her original home. A home where she could remember nothing but happiness.

When they finally arrived at UPenn a few days later she checked into her building and unfortunately saw that Max was in the same building as her. She saw his parents go in the elevator to go upstairs and quickly looked the other way pretending like she didn't see them.

She picked up her ID and her keys and headed over to her dorm room which thankfully was on the first floor. She also luckily had a single. She was a little disappointed at first when she found out she didn't have a roommate, but it would probably turn out great anyway. She'll make new friends no matter what.

She moved all of her stuff in, and said goodbye to her parents before plopping down on her bed with a big sigh and took a short nap. Although Max was in her building, she new this year would be great despite the drama that is her life.

Over the past several months, Liz has absolutely loved being back in Philly. She'd only had to be confronted with Max a handful times, while the rest of the time she sucessfully avoided him.

Her and Kyle weren't in the best of situations right now. Being so far away from each other was much more difficult than they anticipated. All she wanted to do sometimes was be with him and she couldn't which made her upset. They'd always end up yelling at each other on the phone and it would make her even more upset.

Last night was the worst argument they'd had and apparently they were taking a little break from each other because he just couldn't deal with their problems anymore. Liz couldn't believe that after two and a half years he would end things with her so easily.

It was now March and Max was getting ready to go to class when he heard a knock on his door. He opened it up and found Ernie there.

"Hey babe!" he said kissing her. "This is a surprise."

"I know...Look Max I have to talk to you" She said as she walked into his room and sat on his bed.

"Well can it wait? I'm late for class and this professor's a dick."

She stood up from the bed with tears in her eyes and wrapped her arms around his waist. "I won't be here when you get back Max."

When you come back I won't be here
She said and gently pulled me near.
If you wanna talk you can call
and no it's not your fault.

"What do you mean Erin?" He said annoyed and pulled away from her.

I just smiled and said let go of me.
Now there's something I just gotta know.
Did someone else steal my part?
She said it's not my fault.

Ernie was silent and he knew that she had fallen for someone else. His whole world was falling apart in front of him and he didn't know what to do. He dropped his books and stuff on the ground and sat on his bed with his palms rubbing into his eyes.

"I'm so sorry Max. I didn't mean to hurt you." Ernie said as she knelt down in front of him.

"Is there anyway we can..." he trailed off not willing to accept that she was leaving him.

Ernie just shook her head. "I don't think so."

Max frustratingly got up and started pacing around his room. "What did I do wrong?"

"Max you didn't do anything wrong. You have to believe me this isn't your fault."

I gave myself away completely

Cause someone else was on your mind
In your head

"How can you do this to me Erin?! I gave you everything. I gave you my virginity when I had promised it to Liz!" He unwillingly screamed out.

"You what?" She said in shock.

"Liz and I promised each other at one time that we'd lose our virginities together." He said sounded so weak.

"Why didn't you tell me this?" She asked him walking over to him and putting her hand on his arm which he quickly shrugged off.

Max chose to ignore her question and after a long silence he lifted up his head and asked barely above a whisper. "Who is he?"

Shocked by the question, Ernie answered, "Um...his name is Dave. He's in one of my art classes." Max just nodded. "Max please you have to believe me when I tell you that I did love you, in fact I still do. I never meant to hurt you."

Max didn't say anything he just grabbed his books and went to class in a rage. He needed to get away, but he knew if he missed this class one more time his grade for that class would suffer. It didn't really matter that he went though because he couldn't concentrate at all. He just couldn't wait for it to be over.

He went back to his room after class, and found a note for him.

When I came back she wasn't there.
Just a note left on the stairs.
If you wanna talk give me a call

Max crumpled up the note and fell to his bed in sobs.

He didn't know who to call and who to go to. He had a bunch of friends here, but he was always spending time with Ernie that he didn't have time to get close with anyone. There was one person however that he knew he could talk to...if she'd let him.

Max ran out of his room, down two flights of steps and found himself at Liz's door. He lifted a fist to knock but hesitated. He finally just knocked, tears still pouring down his face. After a few moments Liz opened the door. He was the last person she expected to see at her door.

"What the hell are you doing here?"
