Part One
Kyle Valenti: Star Athlete

The crowd of teenagers in the stands roared loudly as Kyle Valenti scored another two-point basket, putting the West Roswell Comets even further in the lead. Kyle smiled to himself as he jogged back down the court, thinking, This one’s in the bag.

At only halfway through his Freshman year at West Roswell High School, Kyle had already found his niche – sports. During the fall, he’d been the star player on the Freshman football team, earning notice from the coaches that would most definitely land him a spot on the varsity team for next year. He was currently carrying the basketball team through a winning season, and was already preparing himself for baseball tryouts in a few weeks.

With the star athleticism came guaranteed popularity. In a small school like West Roswell, the athletes ruled. All the guys wanted to be them, and all the girls wanted to date them. Being the only son of the town sheriff had its benefits too. Who wants to get on the bad side of the son of one of the most powerful men in town?

Basically, Kyle was on top of the world. He felt untouchable – like he could do anything and have anything. And there was something – make that someone – that he had his eye on.

With his popular status, Kyle could have his pick of pretty much any girl he wanted. In fact, he’d already dated quite a few since the beginning of the year. But there was one girl who stood out among all the rest. One girl that would make him the envy of all the other guys on the team. One girl that he was planning on taking to Pam Troy’s Valentine’s party.

Isabel Evans.

If Kyle Valenti was a king among men in their high school, then Isabel Evans would be the queen. She was easily the prettiest girl in the Freshman class, maybe even the entire school. She had the longest, silkiest blonde hair, and a body so hot that it could light a room on fire. For as long as he’d known her, she’d always been prettier than most girls, but now she put them all to shame. She was a sixteen-year-old girl on the verge of becoming a twenty-five-year-old woman.

Isabel had a reputation for being pretty cold – some had dubbed her the “Ice Princess.” The other girls in school either hated her or wanted to be her – there was no in between. All the guys wanted to date her, and her name came up in the locker room fairly frequently. Kyle knew, though, that most of them were full of shit. He was pretty confident that none of them had gotten past first base with her, if they even got that far.

Isabel had a mysterious side to her, which intrigued Kyle. Despite her social standing, she spent an odd amount of time with Max Evans, her reclusive brother, and Michael Guerin, who Kyle thought was a bit of a weirdo. Kyle had noticed that she seemed to be a different person when she was around those two – gentler and more open. It was like she put up these invisible walls around everyone else, but Max and Michael got to see the real deal. And as much as Kyle appreciated Isabel’s beautiful exterior, he really wanted to find out what was behind those walls.

So he’d made up his mind that he was going to ask her to Pam’s party – which was rumored to be the social event of the year. Pam had a reputation for being quite a party girl, and it was common knowledge that her parents were away a lot, and didn’t seem to care much about what she did in their absence. It was a teenager’s wet dream.

After the game (which the Comets won, of course), Kyle and some of his teammates headed to the Crashdown Café for a late dinner, as was their custom after home games. And who happened to be sitting just a few booths away, but the beautiful Miss Evans herself. Kyle couldn’t help but be captivated by the way she smiled and casually flipped her luxurious blonde hair over one shoulder as she chatted idly with her girlfriends.

“Dude, you’re starting to drool.” Kyle jumped when an elbow jabbed him sharply in the side.

“Shit, Paulie!” Kyle exclaimed, hitting his friend in the chest. “What the hell’d you do that for?”

“I know what you’re thinking, man,” Paulie said, “and you might as well give it up right now.”

“What?”

“You’re thinking of asking the Ice Princess to Pam’s party, aren’t you?”

“So what if I am?” Kyle asked indifferently.

“I’m telling you, it’s not worth it. She’s like…” Paulie paused, as if searching for the right words. “Some kind of… evil bitch monster of death!”

Kyle scoffed and said, “Yeah, like you would even know. You’re just pissed ‘cause she wouldn’t go out with you.”

A slight blush crept into Paulie’s cheeks, and Kyle knew he’d hit the nail on the head. “Whatever, man,” Paulie said sullenly. “Just watch out. She could freeze hell over with one of her icy glares.”

As several of the other guys at the table murmured in agreement, Kyle continued to watch Isabel. Thoughtfully, he said, “You guys are wrong about her. There’s something about her…”

“Don’t go all sappy on us, Valenti,” Tommy piped up. “Why don’t you try to prove us wrong anyway? Go ask her.”

“What, right now?” Kyle asked.

“Yeah, go ask her out. If she says yes,” Paulie said, emphasizing the word ‘if,’ “then you can try to prove that we’re wrong about her.”

Kyle was never one to step down from a challenge, and with all of his friends staring at him expectantly and egging him on, he really didn’t have much of a choice.

So as his teammates looked on eagerly, he rose from his seat and confidently approached the girls’ booth…

Part Two
Isabel Evans: Beauty Queen

“And then he told me, ‘It’s not just about sex, I really do love you.’”

Isabel Evans fought the urge to roll her eyes as the rest of the girls gushed at Shelly Mason’s story. It was all she could do to keep her mouth shut. Didn’t these girls know what a load of crap that was? Teenage boys only wanted one thing – and love didn’t have anything to do with it.

“He has a really romantic Valentine’s Day all planned out for us…” Shelly continued to rattle on about the wonderfulness that was her boyfriend, and Isabel pretended to listen. One of these days Shelly would learn. They all would.

“Oh my god,” Natalie suddenly blurted. “Kyle Valenti is headed this way.”

Shelly’s story was suddenly forgotten as all the girls’ attention was drawn to the popular athlete. Isabel gave his lean body a once over, noting his confident stride as he approached their booth. Kyle was the most popular guy in their class, and he carried himself like he knew it. And while Isabel did find him attractive (because, really, a girl would have to be blind not to), she suddenly found herself incredibly annoyed with him.

“Hey, Kyle!” several of the girls greeted flirtatiously.

He greeted them in return, flashing them all a charming smile, before focusing his attentions on Isabel. “Isabel, can I talk to you for a second?” he asked.

There was no hiding the disappointed looks from the other girls. None of them had a doubt in their mind as to why Kyle wanted to talk to Isabel.

Most girls would probably fall all over themselves for a chance to go out with Kyle, but Isabel was determined to keep the upper hand here. Flashing Kyle the sweetest smile she could muster, she said, “Well, Kyle, I’m sure you can say whatever you need to say right here.”

He looked momentarily caught off guard by her response, but recovered quickly, exuding confidence once again. “All right,” he said with a smile. “I was wondering if you would go to Pam’s party with me this weekend.”

Isabel was all ready to shoot him down cold, until she happened to lock gazes with him. While his body language screamed “egotistical bastard,” something in his eyes caught Isabel by surprise. There was a vulnerability there – something she’d never noticed before. Just by looking at him, she got the strangest feeling that maybe he was different.

Before she had the chance to change her mind, she flashed him another smile – this one much more genuine. “Yes, Kyle,” she said. “I’d love to.”

***

“So I heard you were going out with Kyle Valenti,” Michael said at lunch the next day.

“What?” Isabel asked. Since when did Michael care whom she went out with?

“The star athlete and the school beauty queen?” Michael asked with a condescending roll of his eyes. “It’s all I’ve heard about all morning.”

Isabel turned a questioning gaze to her brother, and Max just nodded, indicating that he’d heard the rumor mill as well.

“What do you see in these clowns anyway?” Michael asked with disdain.

“Since when do you care?” Isabel retorted.

“I don’t. I just want to make sure you’re being careful,” he said, giving her a discreet warning look.

“I’m always careful,” Isabel said, looking at him pointedly. “Just because I happen to have a social life doesn’t mean I’m not being careful.”

“Fine,” Michael grumbled. “Just don’t… have any hot alien sex with him or anything.”

“God, Michael!” Isabel nearly shouted, tossing her half-eaten sandwich onto the table. She angrily gathered her things and stormed away from the table. As she was walking away, she could hear Max starting in on one of his trademark lectures.

Max and Michael just didn’t understand. She’d spent her younger years hiding just like they did. Keeping to herself, not really making any friends. But after middle school, she’d decided she’d had enough. Regardless of what was out there, Earth was her home now, and damned if she wasn’t going to make the most of it. It wasn’t really hard to climb the social ladder of high school… all she had to do was emphasize her already good looks and make friends with all the right people.

But Isabel wasn’t stupid. She knew that the people in her social circle weren’t “real friends.” But it was better than being alone, only having Max and Michael for company. The popularity was like an escape for her. When she was hanging out with her girlfriends, all she had to worry about was boys and hair and makeup. She didn’t have to obsess over the fact that she didn’t really know who she was or where she came from.

So what was the big deal about having some harmless fun with cute boys? She never let it go too far, and never let anyone get too close. She knew what kind of a reputation that had earned her. She wasn’t deaf… she knew what people said about her behind her back. The “Ice Princess,” they called her. And it still didn’t stop the guys from asking her out.

But there seemed to be something different about Kyle. She had initially pegged him for just another obnoxious, horny teenager, but the look she’d caught in his eye last night told her differently. Yes, there was something special about him.

She couldn’t explain it, but maybe, just maybe, Kyle Valenti could be more than just harmless fun.

Thanks for the fb! :D Though I'm afraid there won't be any hot alien sex... maybe another story. ;)

Pooh, I'm sure Alex will forgive you. ;)
Sel, yeah, I would have been mortified too. You know if you ever do come up with any ideas, I'll be first in line to read it. ;)
Polia, thanks! I'm glad you liked it.

Part Three
Kyle & Isabel: The New ‘It’ Couple?

Loud music pounded in their ears as Isabel and Kyle entered the Troy house on Saturday night. They’d had a pleasant enough evening thus far, chatting about trivial things like school, sports, and the latest gossip. Of course, now that they’d arrived at the party, they were the latest gossip. Eyes watched them from every direction. It was like everyone had been waiting for the moment when these two would embrace their destiny and become West Roswell High School’s new ‘it’ couple.

Kyle placed a hand possessively on the small of Isabel’s back as they made their over to the group of basketball players and cheerleaders that was gathered in the center of the living room. Kyle could tell that some of his teammates were already pretty wasted. He chuckled to himself as he imagined what a fit the coach would have if he ever found out.

The group of popular underclassmen hung out for a while, laughing and enjoying the carefree party. Shelly was laden down with a bouquet of flowers that the wonderful boyfriend had given her, bragging about how he’d picked her up for their date by presenting the flowers and a huge heart-shaped box of chocolates. (However, the boyfriend himself was suspiciously absent.) Isabel couldn’t quite figure out why Shelly was still toting the flowers around, but she figured it was her proof of what a great boyfriend she had. A couple of the other girls were getting a kick out of making fun of other people’s outfits. “Oh my god, her shoes are so ugly!” “Can you believe he wore a pea green shirt?” “I think someone is still stuck in the eighties!”

Isabel heard some raucous laughter coming from the other side of the room just after “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred came blasting from the stereo. Isabel, Kyle, and the others wandered in the direction of the noise to find that a very drunk Senior was singing loudly and performing his very own striptease to the song. Everyone laughed loudly as the guy continued his drunken dance.

The attention was again diverted elsewhere as a voice shouted from one of the bathrooms, “Someone get a plunger! The toilet is overflowing!”

As Pam ran off in the direction of the disaster (trying not to have a panic attack), Kyle whispered in Isabel’s ear, “Wanna go somewhere more quiet?”

Isabel, already bored with the antics of the partygoers, nodded in agreement and allowed Kyle to pull her by the hand to a bedroom at the top of the stairs. Going inside and closing the door to shut out some of the noise, Isabel looked around the room. It was decorated with all sorts of frilly girl things, and Isabel guessed that it belonged to Pam’s younger sister.

“Uh, someone should probably tell Pam’s sister that her goldfish is dead,” Isabel heard Kyle say from the other side of the room, and she laughed in response.

Isabel seated herself on the twin size bed, decorated with a pink and yellow floral design comforter. “Stop looking through Pam’s sister’s things,” she jokingly scolded Kyle, and he gave her a smile and joined her on the bed.

They sat in silence for a few seconds until Kyle impulsively leaned in and placed a kiss to Isabel’s lips. He wasn’t sure what made him do it. Maybe it was to fill the silence. Maybe it was just because he thought it was what he should do. Regardless of the reason, he kissed her and she kissed him back. The kiss was slow and sweet, and Kyle definitely felt a spark.

Breathlessly, they pulled apart, and Kyle placed his forehead against hers, running a hand through the silky strands of her golden hair. “There’s something special about you, Isabel,” he said in a low voice.

“Wh-what?” Isabel stammered, suddenly sounding nervous.

“I can’t explain it,” Kyle said to her. “But you’re special. I think there’s more to you than what everyone else sees. I want to know you.”

Isabel suddenly felt as if she couldn’t breathe. Any other girl probably would have turned to a pile of goo at Kyle’s sweet words, but they left Isabel in a near panic. Sure, she thought there was something special about Kyle too, but now that she was faced with the reality of the situation, all she wanted to do was run. Kyle couldn’t know her. He couldn’t ever know her.

When he leaned in to kiss her again, Isabel pulled away, abruptly standing up. She gave Kyle a brief longing look, wishing more than anything that she could continue kissing him. Wishing that she didn’t have this secret that would forever prevent her from getting close to anyone. Maybe Max and Michael had the right idea after all…

“What’s wrong?” Kyle asked, sounding confused.

“I’m not interested in getting serious,” Isabel told him firmly.

“Who said anything about serious?” Kyle asked, clearly perplexed. “I just want to get to know you better.”

“I don’t think this is going to work out,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. She picked up her purse and headed for the door.

“Isabel, wait!”

Isabel turned back to face him slowly, and saw the pain and confusion in his eyes. Taking a deep breath, she spoke quietly, showing him the side that he knew lurked beneath her cold exterior.

“I’m sorry, Kyle. You’re a really nice guy, but… this just isn’t going to work for me. You deserve someone who can let you in… I’m just not that person. Maybe if things were different…” She paused, her voice catching in her throat. She didn’t want Kyle to see just how much this was getting to her. “But they aren’t. I’m sorry, Kyle. I really am.” With that, she opened the door and made a quick exit.

Kyle jumped up to follow her, his mind reeling. What just happened here? One minute they were having fun, making out, and the next she was running for the door. What is she talking about? If things were different…?

Kyle followed Isabel’s quick descent down the stairs, but stopped short at the bottom as she joined her friends back in the living room. She cast one last apologetic look in his direction before turning her attention back to the group.

“So she ditched you already, huh?” Kyle heard Paulie say. Convenient that he just happened to show up then.

“Shut up, Paulie,” Kyle grumbled.

“Told you, man,” Tommy said, popping up beside Paulie. “Cold as ice!”

The two guys walked off, laughing at Kyle’s expense, but Kyle just ignored them. He watched wistfully as Isabel laughed with her friends on the other side of the room. He didn’t care what his buddies said. He knew there was something more to Isabel Evans.

Kyle Valenti just wasn’t the guy who would be lucky enough to figure it out.

The End

AN: I hope you guys aren't too disappointed in the ending, but I felt it was appropriate. And who knows, maybe there's a sequel somewhere down the line. Thank you all for reading, and Happy Valentine's Day!
