Sometimes The Wind Blows...
Chapter One
About Jesscia
Liz stood at the window, watching the children as they played in the park across the street. She let out a small sigh, she hoped this emergency meeting with her attorney Thomas Burke was not anything to serious. He had called while she was away on business and left a message saying that he needed to see her as soon as possible that a situation had come up concerning her niece Jessica. Thinking about her precious little niece made her smile, she loved her very much. Jessica was her sister Beth's child. Bethany Ann Parker, Beth as she always went by, was Liz's younger identical twin sister. When Beth found out she was pregnant, she came running to Liz for help. It was very clear that her little sister was in no way ready for the responsibilities of motherhood, so Liz came to her rescue. She loved her sister dearly but she hated the selfish, self destructive behavior she always seemed to be drowning in. It wasn't long after Jessica's birth that the police showed up on Liz's door, “Miss Parker, we are sorry to tell you, your sister was involved in a accident, seems she had been drinking this evening and her car slid off the road and hit a tree...” the rest of the words were a blur. Beth held on for a few weeks in intensive care but then one cold, snowy night she just slipped away. Liz had written to Jase Evans informing him about Beth's death but she never heard back from him, so she continued to raise Jessie as her own. The sound of the door opening interrupted her thoughts, she smiled as Thomas Burke finally came in and greeted her, “Oh good morning Elizabeth, I am so sorry to keep you waiting.” he said as he sat down at his desk.
Liz smiled, she walked over and took a seat, “Its alright Thomas, so whats up, you said on the phone this had to do with Jessie?” she asked trying not to sound to worried.
Thomas opened a file on his desk and nodded, “Yes, something has come up. I received a call three days ago from Mr. Williams, he is the attorney of Maxwell Evens. Does the last name sound familiar?” he asked her.
Liz shook her head yes, “Evens is Jase's last name.” she said.
“Yes, well Maxwell Evens is his older brother and he his demanding to see Jessica.” he told her.
“What?... Why now?... Why after all this time does he want to see her, its been 4 years?” she asked her voice filled with concern.
Thomas shook his head, “Apparently Jase died of cancer a few weeks ago. Before he died he asked his brother to right the wrong he had done by not acknowledging Jessica in the first place. Mr. Williams explained that Mr. Evens was very interested in meeting with Jessica and working out some kind of arrangement for the child's care.”
Liz let out a heavy sigh, “What exactly does that mean Thomas, you seem awfully concerned about this if all the uncle wants is to see Jessica and get to know her.” Liz asked.
Thomas Burke smiled then took off his glasses and cleaned them, “I am not going to lie to you Elizabeth, Maxwell Evens is a very powerful man and used to getting what ever it is he wants. Before Jase died he told his brother about Bethany. He told him about the drinking and partying behavior. Mr Evans wants to make sure that his niece is not in any kind of abusive situation.”
“But she's not, so everything should be fine right?” Liz asked.
“Not exactly, its seems Maxwell Evens has it in his mind to take Jessica from you, he is considering suing for full custody because of your background...or rather because of Bethany's background.” he told her then added, “Elizabeth, he hired a private detective and that is how he found you, he believes that you are Jessica's real mother. He believes that you are Bethany and he has concerns about someone like that raising his niece. Now that he knows about Jessica he feels that he needs to step in.”
Liz shook her head, “He can't do that, he can't take Jessie from me..” she said then added, “Can't we just tell him that Beth was Jessica's mother but she died in a car accident not long after her birth.”
Thomas shook his head, “I am advising you against that at the moment.” he said in all seriousness. “Elizabeth when Jessica was born you knowingly admitted Beth as Elizabeth Parker, you gave your ID, your insurance information, your social security number...that constitutes fraud” he warned her.
Liz took in a deep breath, “I know that, but what was I supposed to do, Beth was unconscious, in heavy labor and that hospital was refusing to care for her unless I produced insurance for her. She would have died if I hadn't switched places and so would have Jessica.” she reminded him.
“I know that, I do...but its your name that appears on all the birth records and the birth certificate not Bethany's and Mr. Evans believes your the person that Jase told him about.” He explained, “Elizabeth if the truth gets out you could loose Jessica. Even if the court did take into consideration all the facts surrounding the case. Even if the charges of fraud that surely would come up where dismissed, in the end it would still come down to a custody battle between you, Jessica's biological aunt and him her biological uncle...and he has a lot more money and connections then you do.” he told her honestly.
Liz got up and walked over to the window, “Alright then we let him believe that I am Jessie's mom. I will just pretend to be Beth, but then what, he still could take this into court.”
Thomas smiled, “Not necessarily, he wants to meet with you.”
“Why?” was all Liz said.
“I'm not sure but I am guessing because the information the detective uncovered about you doesn't match with what Jase must have told him.” He told her.
Liz shook her head in confusion, “I am not sure I am following you.”
He walked over to stand near her, “Don't you see he does not know about Beth being your identical twin, he believes you are the woman Jase was with. Meet him and let him see for himself that he has nothing to worry about where Jessica is concerned and I am sure this whole thing will all blow over.” he told her.
"Alright Thomas, I trust you. You have always been there for me and my family if you think this is the best way to handle this, then I will do it.” she told him. “Thank you again for all your help.”
“Now I don't want you to worry, I am going to do my best for you to get this settle. You go on home and give Jessie a kiss for me and I will call you as soon as I hear back from them about meeting with you.” Thomas assured her.
Liz smiled, “I will try not to worry.” she promised as she left the office. She did trust Thomas, he was a dear friend to her. She had known him since she was a young girl, he and her father had gone to school together. He had always been there for both her and Beth even after her parents where killed in a plane crash. She missed her mom and dad very much, especially at times like these when she desperately needed to be sure she was doing the right thing.

This is a max and Liz centered story.
Authors note; Sorry about not leaving a better description for my story in the first chapter, this being my first story that I am posting I was unaware of the protocol. I hope that you will enjoy reading my story as much as I am writing it. Thank you.
This story is about Elizabeth Parker, a young woman who has had many struggles to face in her life, the death of her parents at an early age, the loss of her beloved twin sister, and the trails of caring for her baby niece on her own. Maxwell Evens is a young business man of 25. He has everything he could ever want, money, power, success. It isn't until the tragic loss of his younger brother that he realizes that the one thing he does not have in his life is love. Will the smile of his beautiful young niece, or the haunting dark brown eyes of a woman he can't quite figure out show him that there is more to life then what he can buy????
Chapter 2
Max's view
It was already past noon when Max's attorney showed up at the office, “John, its good to hear back from you finally so what news do you have for me?” he asked as he shook hands with him and motioned for him to sit down.
Jonathan Williams smiled as he sat down, “Well it looks as if she has agreed to meet with you. Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this but apparently she was out of town on business and just spoke with her attorney this morning.” he explained.
“What is it she does again?” Max asked not sure he remembered from the file.
“She is a photographer, she does some freelance work as well as full time stuff for the magazine International Weekly News.” he told him.
“Thats right, I had forgotten.” Max said as he took out and opened the file the detective agency had sent over for him. He stared at the picture of the young woman as she walked along holding the hand of the little girl he assumed was his niece. She was beautiful, with long dark brown hair and gorgeous brown eyes. He remembered thinking the first time he saw her photo that he could understand why his brother had been attracted to her. As he read over the file again he found himself feeling confused all over again, she did not seem to be the person that his brother described at all.
“So Max, why do you want to meet with her anyway, from what you said Jase told you about her, she seems to me like she is clearly and unfit mother, and not capable of raising a daughter on her own.” Jonathan asked him, then added, “I think we have a pretty strong case, although she has no arrest record, the videos your brother had of the two of them made it very clear what kid of person she was.”
Max shook his head, “Yes, I know, and believe me I am taking that into consideration. Its just very odd, everything Jase said about her, wrote about her in his journals leads me to believe that perusing custody is the right thing for me to do, but this detective report its a complete opposite. I mean, look here...it says she is 23 years old, maintains a full time job, owns her own home, doesn't drink, smoke, or use drugs of any kind. In the entire month that I had her followed she never once stepped into a night club, I don't even think she dates, all of her time is either consumed with work or the child.” he told him.
“It is puzzling to be sure.” He said as he got to his feet, “So do you want me to set up a meeting for this week with the mother and the little girl?”
Max shook his head, “No lets just set it up for Miss Parker first, the little girl is only 4, I don't want to frighten or confuse her, besides we don't know what she has been told about her father at this point.” he said as he glanced down at his niece, she was a sweet looking child, she resembled her mother a great deal except in the eyes. She had Jase's hazel green eyes, the one thing he shared in common with his younger brother, he thought to himself. Max said goodbye to his attorney and sat back down at his desk to examine the photo further, something just didn't seem to add up here and he was determined to figure out what it was. Truthfully this woman Elizabeth Parker didn't seem at all like Jase's type, he usually went for the party girl who like himself liked to drink, hang out with friends and over indulge in everything. Jase always use to tell Max that life wasn't worth living if you didn't live it to the fullest, and for him that meant chasing after woman, spending money, and drinking large amounts of alcohol. He was the perfect stereotypical rich playboy at heart. Both Max and his older sister Isabel had tried over the years to get their younger brother to slow down, to take on some responsibility but he refused, until it was to late. He closed his eyes and thought about the day Jase had called and wanted to see him,
“Max...I need to be honest with you. I need to tell you somethings, something about me that you don't know.” Jase told him.
Max looked down at his younger brother, laying in his hospital bed, barely able to breath and smiled, “I doubt very seriously that there is anything that you can tell me Jase that I don't already know or at least suspect.”
“Max, I'm not going to beat this thing, I know it...every day they come in here with some knew treatment , and everyday I feel myself slipping further and further away.” he started to say. Max didn't interrupt or protest the notions that he didn't have much time left, he had seen for himself as his once healthy vibrant little brother was now wasting away. He took Jase hand into his own and sat down in the chair near the bed, “Ok little brother, talk to me, tell me what you need to.” he said softly.
Jase seemed relieved not to have to argue the point, “Max I have a child. There was a girl she was barely 19, her name was Beth...Beth Parker. She was beautiful, we had only been together for a few months when she told me she was pregnant. I was selfish, a real scum, I suggested she have an abortion, but she refused. I told her that I didn't love her and as far as I was concerned she was on her own. She wrote to me once, but I tossed the letter and never looked back.” he admitted.
Max let out a heavy sigh, “Your sure the child is yours?” he asked his brother.
“Yea, I am sure. She knew I had money and I kind of think the pregnancy was on purpose..at least that was what I told myself to ease my conscious for not doing what I should have.” Jase said as another round of coughing fits over came him. Several moments later he continued, “She was wild, liked living fast, and having fun, a real party girl..not the type to make a good mother.” he said then added, “Max, I need you to promise me that you will find Beth and make sure that the baby, that my baby is alright. Make sure he or she is well cared for, that they have a good home; And promise me that you will make sure my child knows that I am sorry I wasn't there when they were born, that I wasn't there for them.” he said as he struggled to hold back tears.
Max own eyes were filling with tears, “I will Jase, I promise.” he said softly.
Jase smiled as if a heavy burden had been lifted off his shoulders, “Max, I saw Jonathan early today, my trust fund, I have instructed him to put the remainder of my trust fund and any of the profit of my shares in the business, its to be set aside in an account for my child, for when they are older.” he said as fresh waves of pain griped his body. “Max in my journal, in my private chambers at the house, it has all the information I have on Beth, her last address, stuff like that. You need to go through it, you need to find her.” he said as he struggled with the pain.
Max nodded his head, “Alright Jase, I will see to it that everything happens just as you instructed.”
Max wiped his eyes as tears formed, he thought about Jase's last day alive:
“Jase...I found her. I found Elizabeth. I just got the call from the detective, you are the father of a beautiful little girl.” he told him.
Jase struggled to breath as his eyes flutter open for a brief moment, “Her name? What is her name?” he asked weakly.
Max smiled, “Her name is Jessica.”
Jase closed his eyes as a peaceful expression washed over his face as he mumbled softly, “Jessica.” A few short hours later Jase died having never regained consciousness. The cancer finally taking over completely he died that afternoon.
Max pushed back from the desk and walked over to the window. He wiped his eyes and watched as the wind softly blew through the trees. “I promise Jase that your little girl will be taken care of and that she will know how much you loved her.” Max whispered softly to himself.

This is a Max and Liz centered story.
Author's note: Thank you Eve for leaving me a reply. I hope you will still find the story interesting as it progresses. If anyone else is reading, I am always interested in hearing peoples thoughts about my writing. In this chapter Max and Liz meet one another.
Chapter 3
Meeting
Liz opened the front door and called out, “Jessie, I'm home.”
Without warning a small but lively beautiful little girl came running out of the kitchen her hands filled with peanut butter and jelly, laughing and giggling, “Mommy!” she cried as she leaped into Liz arms.
Liz laughed, “oh my someone; has been making their own lunch again haven't they? Where is auntie Maria?” she asked as they headed back towards the kitchen.
“I am in here Liz.” Maria called to her friend.
Liz walked into the kitchen, there were several small messy peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on a plate and three glasses of milk sitting in the center of the table. Maria finished washing her hands and motioned for Liz to sit down, “Jessie made us lunch.”
Liz smiled, “I see that.” she said as she sat Jessica down in her chair and took the one next to her. “Well these look very yummy, don't they auntie Maria.”
“They sure do.” Maria said as they all took a sandwich and ate. After they finished eating and listening to the amazingly fun time that Jessie and Auntie Maria had together Liz cleaned up her niece and sent her off to watch cartoons so she could speak with Maria.
Maria wiped down the table and sat back down as Liz came back into the room, “So what happened, what was the big emergency?” she asked.
Liz shook her head as she grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, “Its not good, apparently Jase Evens died of cancer and his older brother Maxwell Evans wants to meet with me to discuss Jessica.”
“Maxwell Evens,... Maxwell Evens...that name sounds really familiar to me for some reason.” she said as she got up and headed into Liz office and turned on her computer. Liz followed along behind explaining everything Thomas had told her that morning.
“So I really don't have any choice but to meet him and pray that he doesn't want to pursue this custody any further.” Liz said as she stood next to her desk.
Maria finished typing on the keyboard and pulled up a recent news article, “I knew it, look here Liz he is that guy, the really young business man that is in all the headlines lately.” she said pointing to the screen.
Liz glanced at the monitors screen and read, “Maxwell Evens, one of the worlds richest men, and all before 25.” She stared at his photo, “Wow, he doesn't look that much like Jase does he, I mean they have the same eyes, but the hair and other features are really different.” Liz said finally.
Maria shook her head, “Liz according to this, he is hardcore, “At the age of 18 Maxwell Evens graduated from Harvard Business school and took over the running of the family business when his fathers sudden stroke left him unable to continue as chairman of the board. Today he is a multi millionaire at the young age of 25. He along with his older sister Isabel Whitman co-chair the board and are the major stock holders in their software security company Secure Knowledge technologies as well as their many other subsidiary companies. Recently Evans Enterprise bought up major shares in their chief competitor Safety Net software, and wall street is watching for the announcement of a merger between the too. When asked if there was any obstacle that Mr. Evans couldn't over come, he shook his head confidently and replied, “Not yet.” Maria turned to Liz as she finished reading, “So your really going to meet with this guy?”
Liz nodded her head, “what choice do I have?”
Maria glanced back over at his picture, “Well maybe he's not so hardcore in his personal life as he is in his business.”
“I hope so Maria, I can't loose Jessica, she is the only family that I have left.” Liz said softly.
Maria smiled, “Liz its going to be alright, just do what Thomas told you and meet with him. Maxwell Evans will see that your not some out of control party girl, but a loving and caring mom and that will be that.” she assured
Liz bit her bottom lip, “I hope your right.” she said. “Thomas said that Jase told him all about Beth. I am sure he has some really ugly stories about her that are going to be difficult having brought up again.”
Maria could tell Liz was feeling upset, “This is bringing up some bad memories ugh?” she asked.
“I have been thinking a lot about Beth all morning, she wasn't perfect, but she was my sister.” Liz said sadly.
“Liz there are a lot of really great memories of Beth that you and I both have, but in the end she wasn't the person we both grew up with, I know thats hard for you, but try to remember that when you meet with this guy ok.” Maria told her. “No matter what he says.”
Liz shook her head, “I will. So what are you doing the rest of the day?”
Maria glanced down at her watch, “I am having lunch with Billy.” she told her.
Liz laughed, “I thought that you and Billy were all through.”
“yeah well you know how it is, on again, off again. Some day I am going to meet the perfect guy and it will just click.” she said then added “You might think about getting out once in awhile too.”
Liz shook her head, “Please I have enough going on right now, I don't need to add a relationship to the mix. Besides I just don't think my Mr. Right is here in New Port.”
Maria grabbed her bag and headed for the door, “Yeah but Liz you have been saying that since we were 14.” she reminded her just before she left.
Liz glanced down at the photo one more time before she shut off the computer. He was amazingly handsome she had to admit. She went into the living room and checked on Jessica who was curled up on the sofa watching her favorite movie, Cinderella. She thought about what Maria had said and knew she was right. She hadn't dated, at least not seriously. It was strange how the death of her parents effected her and Beth differently. She had thrown herself into her education and then later into her work, while Beth barely graduated. By the time they both turned 18 Beth was already drinking heavily, and partying all the time. When she got her hands on the money her parents left her she was gone for almost a year before Liz heard from her again. When Beth did finally show back up she was 9 months pregnant, broke and really messed up emotionally Liz remembered:
“Lizzie I have made such a mess of my life. I need your help, please?” Beth asked as tears rolled down her cheeks.
Liz fixed her sister some tea and sat down next to her, “Bethany how far along are you?” she asked.
“I think about 8 months, maybe a little more.” she said as she wiped her eyes.
Liz shook her head, “What about the father, is he willing to help at all?” she asked.
Beth shook her head, “No. He doesn't want anything to do with me at all.” she told her. “Lizzie can I stay here in my old room until the baby is born?”
Liz shook her head, “Of course Beth.” she said then added, “Beth, about the baby, your not still drinking are you?” she asked.
“No I haven't touched a drop since I found out I was pregnant, I swear.” she told her. Liz helped her sister upstairs to her room, “Lizzie, I want you to have the baby. I want you to take care of her and be her mom.” Beth told her.
Liz stopped, she looked at her sister and shook her head, “Bethany I can't just raise a baby by myself, I'm not even finished with school yet. Besides what about the father, just because he doesn't want anything to do with you right now that might change once the baby is born.”
“He hates me Lizzie, he thinks I got pregnant on purpose, he wanted me to have an abortion.” She told her.
Liz stared into her sisters eyes, “Did you get pregnant on prupose?” she asked seeing the hurt that flashed across her sisters face.
Beth didn't answer right away, “Truthfully... yes, he is rich, and handsome, he had everything I wanted, but then I fell in love with him Lizzie. I really did.” she said softly.
Liz knew she was being honest this time, she wrapped her arms around her sister and lead her into the bedroom, “get some sleep, we can talk more when you wake up.”
Liz wiped her eyes as tears formed in them, she didn't want Jessica to see her upset. She thought about the day of Beth's accident, she had been so upset all that day. Liz had tried to talk to her several times but she wouldn't tell her what was wrong. Later after the accident as Liz was going through Bethany's things she found a magazine article about Jase Evans being engaged to some super model, from that moment on she wondered if Beth had taken her own life that night her car slid into the tree. It was the sound of the telephone ringing that interrupted her thoughts. “hello” Liz answered.
“Liz this is Thomas, I heard back from Mr. Evans attorney and he wants to fly in tomorrow morning to meet with you is that all right?” Thomas asked.
“Thats really fast, should we be worried that he is wastering no time here in wanting to meet with me?” she asked surprised that they were meeting already.
“No, thats just the type of person Maxwell Evens is. So how about my office at 10:30 then.” He asked.
“I will be there.” she told him then said good bye. She took in a deep breath let out a small sigh. Jessica crawled over by her and asked, “Whats the matter mommy?”
Liz wrapped her arms around her, “Now why do you think that something is the matter?” she asked her.
“Because you went like this.” she let out a sigh mimicking Liz.
Liz laughed, “Oh I see and when I do that you think something is wrong.”
Jessica nodded her head, “Last week when I ate all the cookies in the cookie jar you were upset and you did that then.” she reminded her.
Liz smiled, “Well you are very clever to notice, but I am fine. I have a few things on my mind but nothing that you should worry about.” Liz told her. “How about we go down to the beach for a swim?”
Jessica jumped up, her face filled with excitement, “Oh yes, can I bring my water rings too?”
Liz nodded, “Yes, and your beach ball if you like.” she watched as Jessica jumped off the sofa and ran upstairs to get ready. Tomorrow would be here soon enough but for now she just wanted to try and clear her mind and have fun.
Max was running late, a fast moving storm delayed his take off and now he was 20 minutes late for his meeting. He hated it when things were beyond his control. He was not in the best of moods when he entered into the offices of Thomas Burke. Max took note of Elizabeth Parker as soon as he walked into the room, she was very beautiful. Her picture didn't do her justice her thought to himself. “Hello, I am sorry to be late, my assistant called I am sure to inform you of what was happening?” he said as he shook hands with Thomas.
“Yes she did Mr. Evans, no need to apologies some times these things can not be helped.” Thomas told him then turned to Liz, “Mr. Evans, this is Elizabeth Parker, Jessica's mother.”
Liz smiled politely and stood up for a moment to shake hand with him, “Its nice to meet you, Mr. Evans.” she said softly.
Max nodded, “Thank you.” he said as he took his seat, “Now if there are no objections by anyone I have some questions I would like to ask you Miss Parker?”
Liz noticed that he was use to being in charge, she stared into his hazel green eyes and shook her head, “No not at all. I will try to answer your questions.”
Max leaned back in his chair keeping his focus on Liz face, “About my niece, I am sure that Mr. Burke told you that I only just found out about her so obviously a number of my concerns are for her well being.” he began.
Liz interrupted, “Yes Mr. Evans, Thomas did tell me about Jase. I am sorry for your loss.” she said softly.
Max shook his, “Thank you his death was a shock for us all.” Max admitted.
Liz nodded, “The loss of a loved one can be very devastating.” she told him understandingly.
“I understand that you lost your parents when you were younger.” Max mentioned, his voiced filled with sympathy.
Liz nodded her head, “I was 14, they died in a plane crash.” she explained.
“I am sorry.” he said. He stared into her beautiful eyes, they held a depth of emotion he was sure he didn't fully grasp. He couldn't believe how his mood had changed in just the few short minutes of being with her, gone was the tension and frustration he was feeling before. Max cleared his throat and turned his attention down the the file he had in front of him reminding himself not to get caught up in her beauty, “About my niece, tell me about her. What are her likes and dislikes? Does she go to school?” He asked.
Liz smiled, “She is your typical 4 year old, she loves ice cream, chocolate being her favorite. Right now her favorite movie is Cinderella and I think we must have watched it a dozen times since she got it for her birthday.” Liz told him, “She loves kittens, but does not like dogs at all. She likes swimming and playing with her little friends, but no she does not go to school yet.”
Max shook his head, “why doesn't she go to school?” he asked surprised.
Liz laughed, “Because she is only four years old, kindergarten doesn't begin until 6 here.”
“I was in school when I was four, I am sure there are number of good private schools in the area, that have programs for children her age, perhaps you might look into some of them.” he told her.
Liz shook her head, “Thank you for the advice Mr. Evans but I don't think...” she started to say but he interrupted.
“If its the cost, I am more then happy to pay for it for you.” he told her.
Liz felt her self becoming a bit irritated, “Thank you but no, its not the cost. I just happen to think that while Jessie is young she should have fun, time to be a child. There will be more then enough time for school when she is a little older.” she explained.
Max leaned back in his chair, “Yes well there are advantages to having a proper education and head start later on in life.” he told her.
Liz smiled politely, “ok.” was all she said.
“You mentioned that she loves ice cream, I hope you monitor her intake of sweets and sugar. I was just reading the other day that more then half of America's youth struggle with weight problems.” he mentioned.
Liz was beginning to feel really annoyed but tried not to get upset, “She is a typical little girl Mr. Evans, and she has been to everyone of her check ups with the pediatrician and is doing just fine.” she assured him politely.
Max looked up and her, “What does she know about her father? Have you mentioned him to her or explained anything about why he is not there?”
Liz let out a small sigh, she knew this was going to come up, “Mr. Evans, Jessica is only 4 years old.” she reminded him again, then added, “she hasn't asked about her father and truthfully I haven't mentioned Jase to her at all.” she told him.
Max leaned forward in his chair, “And may I ask you why not. I understand that you and Jase did not end on the best of terms but surely she should be told about him. I realize that you didn't get to see him in the end but he was a changed person and wanted very much to know his child. He regretted his action and his unwillingness to take on his responsibilities as her father.” He said in a very serious tone, then added, “Perhaps your not the best suited person to speak with her about her father considering your past.” he suggested feeling defensive for his younger brother.
Liz eyes narrowed, “And just exactly what is that suppose to mean?.” she said sounding more irritated then she meant to.
“Miss Parker, my brother had many things to say about your past, he voiced his concerns to me before he died about the welfare of his child and her care, now from what I can see you seem to have gotten your life together but ...” he told her.
Liz felt her temper flaring, “Mr. Evans, I understand your concerns about Jessica's welfare but she is being very well cared for in a loving home I assure you...”
It was Max's turn to interrupt, “Frankly I don't feel comfortable just taking your word for it. Jase expressed his concerns to me about you raising his child. He told me in great detail about your your drinking, partying and loose lifestyle.” he told her in a cold, angry voice.
Liz stood up, she was angry and didn't like feeling attacked, “Mr. Evans this meeting is over, I am sorry it had to end this way really I am but you seem bent on attacking me. You said that Jase changed well perhaps you should open up to the possibility that I am not the same person I was when Jessica was born. My past is just that my past...I have no desire to go over it here with you or to sit and be verbally assaulted by you.” She said as she started to leave, then stopped turned to face him and added, “You don't even know me or Jessica, you don't know the first thing about either of us, so maybe just maybe you could reserve making judgments until you do.” she said then stormed out of the office.
Max sat back in his chair he realized he had been attacking her. He sat quite for a few moments thinking about what to do next, he had to admit he was surprised by how she stood up for herself, not many people did that when it came to talking to him. Still he couldn't help but feel that she was hiding something and that intrigued him. He was just about to say something to Mr. Burke when Liz came back into the room, “Here...I forgot to give you this.” she said as she handed him a picture of Jessica. “It was taken just a few days ago on the beach near our home. I thought you might like to know what she looks like.” she said still sounding annoyed.
Max looked at the photo, “Thank you Miss Parker.” he said surprised by the thoughtfulness of her action even though she was obviously still angry with him.
Liz cleared her throat, “She has your brothers eyes, their the same hazel green as Jase's were.” she said more softly.
Max smiled, “Its the one thing that Jase and I had in common.” he said told her.
Liz shook her head, deep down she still felt angry with him for his arrogance so she said softly, “Good Bye Mr. Evans.” then she turned and left. It was clear that he was going to take this to court she thought to herself. Tears formed in her eyes, she should have kept her cool, it was just that it was so hard to hear a complete stranger talk her in that way. Having him talk about her drinking, and partying, implying that she was some kind of immoral awful person really bothered her even though she wasn't completely sure why.
Max stood staring at the photo for several more seconds before he turned to address Mr. Burke, “It is unfortunate that things turned out the way they did. Could you please extend my apologies to Miss Parker. I am not usually so sensitive but having Jase just pass away so recently I am afraid I allowed it to affect my actions here today.” he said apologetically.
“I have known Elizabeth for many years, I am sure she will understand.” he said.
Max looked over at his attorney and motioned for him, “Good bye Mr. Burke...we will be in touch.”
Once in the limo Jonathan asked Max, “How do you want to proceed with this Max?”
“I have been thinking, she said that I don't know her or Jessica, perhaps I should get to know them.” he said thinking out loud.
Jonathan shook his head, “do you want me to set up a meeting to meet with the little girl?” he asked a bit puzzled by Max's commit.
Max shook his head no, “I want you to notify Mr. Burke that I would like to invite Miss Parker and Jessica to the house, in Roswell. I would like them to spend a few weeks with me so that I might be able to get to know them both better as she suggested.”
“Do you really think she will go along with that?” he asked doubtful.
Max smiled, “Probably not, so give her a reason to, tell her attorney that I am sure after we spend time getting to know one another that there will be no need to drag this into court, that will make her come.” he said confidently.

Chapter 4
Liz was so frustrated, Maxwell Evans was so obnoxious and arrogant. She had never met a more frustrating man in her life. She decided to go straight to see Maria instead of heading home, she didn't want Jessica to see her so upset. Maria could tell by the expression on her face when she walked into the recording studio that her friend was angry, “Hey guys lets take five.”she told everyone then walked over to join Liz.
“Maria he was rude, and arrogant.” she told her.
“What happened?” Maria asked.
Liz spent the next few minutes going into detail about the meeting, “And then he has the nerve to bring up my past.”
“You mean Beth's past right?” Maria reminded her.
Liz shook her head, “Yes I mean Beth's past.”
“Liz, I'm sorry...does this mean he is going to take you to court?” she asked concerned for her friend.
Liz nodded, “I think he will, he thinks the worst possible things about me. He made it clear that he didn't trust me and with everything he said I wouldn't be surprised if I heard back from Thomas at any moment.” she said as her cell phone began ringing. She looked at the caller Id and shook her head, “Its Thomas.” she said letting out a small sigh just before answering, “Hello Thomas.”
“Elizabeth, Mr. Evans wanted me to extend his apologies, he wanted me to tell you that he is sorry for treating you so rudely and also to invite you and Jessica to come and stay with him at his family home in Roswell, New Mexico.” he told her.
Liz shook her head, “He said he was sorry.” she repeated then added, “Well I appreciate that, I don't think that Jessica and I staying with him is a good idea.” she told him still feeling very angry.
“Elizabeth his lawyer did mention that Mr. Evans has a very busy schedule and that having you visit at his home would be more convenient for him.” Thomas explained.
“Yes well what about me and Jessica, what about our convenience?” she was beginning to feel irritated all over again.
Thomas tried to calm her, “I can't tell you what to do, but I will advise you to make the trip, stay for a week at least. His lawyer did say that Mr. Evans said that he felt if you and he were able to spend time getting to know each other, visitation arrangement could be reached with out taking this to court.” he told her.
Liz took in a deep breath, “He said that?” she repeated.
“Yes and I really think that its a good idea, we really don't want this to go to court. At least think about it over night and call me in the morning.” he told her. Liz agreed and hung up the phone.
“So what was that all about?” she asked.
“Apparently he wanted me to know he was sorry for being so rude and wants Jessica and I to come for a visit.” she explained.
Maria smiled, “Maybe this is a good thing.” she assured her.
Liz shook her head, “Maybe...but why does part of me feel like this is a trap then? At the meeting he was really very nice at first. Then out of no where he was rude and attacking, what if he is like that in front of Jessica. She won't understand and it will scare her.” Liz explained.
Maria glanced down at her watch, “Look I have to get back to work, Sam wants these tracks laid before the weekend so the CD can come out by the end of summer, but don't make any decision until I come by later ok.” she said as she head back toward the sound booth.
Liz shook her head, “What are you plotting in that head of yours?” she asked.
Maria smiled, “Just trust me. See you around 7:00.” she said then closed the door.
Liz headed home to see Jessica, she thought about how nice Maxwell Evans was when he first came into the meeting. She had actually found her self attracted to him for a few moments. Seeing the sadness in his eyes when he spoke about his brother was something she could relate too all to well.
Max stared at the photo of his little niece, it was actually very thoughtful of Elizabeth to give it to him. He let out a small sigh, still he needed to keep his guard up where the mother was concerned, he didn't want anything blinding him to the care and well being of niece. He glanced down at his watch, he wondered if the flowers he had impulsively sent to Miss Parker were a bad idea now. He had truly felt bad about being so rude, and he told himself in any other situation he would have probably done the same thing. Besides perhaps this would go along way to help convince her to say yes to his invitation.
Liz opened the front door, she was surprised by the shouts of excitement from her young niece, “Mommy! Mommy! Someone sent you flowers today.” Jessica announced as she walked though the door.
Liz smiled, “Really?” she asked wondering who they could be from. Mrs. Kline came walking into the front hall with a large bouquet of yellow and white roses. They were beautiful, now she was really curious to see who they were from, knowing how expensive they must have been.
“They came about half an hour ago. There's a card, I left it on the counter for you.” Mrs. Kline told her as she placed the flowers down on the entry table for Liz. “did your meeting go well dear?” she asked.
Liz smiled, “Yes it was fine, thank you Mrs. Kline for sitting with Jessie for me.” she said.
“Anytime dear, you know I love getting to spend time with her, she's like one of my own grand babies.” the older woman told her.
Liz smiled, “Oh thank you, thats so sweet for you to say.”
“Well I better get home, Mr. Kline has been fishing all morning and probably needs help cleaning them so I will see you soon.” she said, then headed out the door.
Liz smiled and waved, “Thanks again.” she said just before closing the door. “Well Jessica lets go read the card and see who sent me these very expensive gorgeous flowers shall we.”
Jessica smiled, “Oh yes mommy...I bet they are from your prince.” she said as she skipped off toward the kitchen.
Liz laughed, “My prince ugh... thats a nice thought.” She opened the envelope and read the note:
Miss Parker, Please excuse my rudeness and abrasiveness during this mornings meeting. I was a bit jet lagged from a hectic schedule and lack of sleep, not at all myself. I say this not as an excuse for my behavior but rather in hopes that I have not put you off completely and you might be willing to accept my invitation and come along with Jessica and stay with the family? I know that my sister Isabel is very anxious to meet her niece as you well might understand.
Hoping to hear from you soon,
Maxwell Evans
Liz put the card back into the envelope and looked down to see Jessica waiting patiently for some news. She smiled, “Well you were right, it was from the prince and he sad he was sorry so he sent me these flowers.” she told her.
Jessica smiled, “I knew it, I just knew it...now we are going to go and live in a castle aren't we mommy?” she asked.
Liz laughed, “No we can't go live in a castle, we live here, besides wouldn't you miss the ocean and all you friends if we went to live in a stuffy old castle.”
“Well maybe just a little but I still want to live in a castle.” she said as she ran from the room. Liz let out a heavy sigh, she wondered what Maxwell Evans was up to. She was really confused by his attitude during the meeting and now this apology and expensive flowers. She wondered if Mr. Evans was using a new tactic to get what he wanted, she resolved to be very cautious if she found herself in his company again.
Max was glad to finally be home, his return flight went much smoother then his previous one but he was still very tired. He was not entirely surprised to see Isabel waiting for him as he walked into the kitchen to grab a bite to eat. “I thought you might be here when I got back.” he told her.
Isabel sipped her lemonade, “Well I did want to know how things went and as usual you did not answer my call.”
“I hate cell phone you know that besides I made a mess of things so I did not exactly want to talk about it over the phone.” he admitted.
Isabel frowned, “What exactly does that mean, you made a mess of things?” she asked concerned.
“Well I insulted her, brought up her past, and generally attacked her for being an evil mother who could never possible raise my niece in a satisfactory manner.” he told her in all seriousness.
“Oh Maxwell you didn't really do that did you?” she asked in frustration.
Max nodded his head, “Yes I did. It was the strangest thing, everything started out on a good note then with out even realizing what was happening we seemed to be at one another's throats. I will admit I threw the first punch, metaphorically speaking of course; but she held her own to be sure.”
Isabel shook her head, “Well what set you off exactly?” she asked.
Max shook his head, “I'm not even sure, we were talking about Jessica's likes and dislikes and she mentioned that she wasn't enrolled in any kind of school or educational programs so I voiced my opinion on the matter; I simply suggested that four was not to early for her to have Jessica in a school situation. Early academic success is a good thing.”
Isabel glared at her brother, “Maxwell four years old is a bit young just because you enjoyed school at a very early age does not mean all children belong in a class room at that young.” she told him them added, “Jefferey is not going to start school until he is at least 5 maybe even 6.” she informed him.
Max looked at her in disbelief, “You can not be serious?” he said when he saw that she was he added, “I will tell you what I told her then, having a solid early education is not a bad thing it offers your child a wealth of advantages later on in life and you should reconsider. I can't believe Alex is going along with that decision.”
Isabel ignored him, “What else did you say?” she asked almost afraid to know.
Max let out a small sigh, “I brought up Jase and asked her what Jessica knew about him. She said she had not told her anything about him and I guess I over reacted. I regret that part of our conversation and I did let her know that.”
“Alright, so what happens from here?” she asked.
Max sipped his soda then smiled, “I invited her and Jessica to come and stay with us for a few weeks so that I, ...rather we might get a better chance to know them both.” he told her.
Isabel let out a heavy sigh, “Well if you were your usual controlling self I highly doubt she will accept.” she told him then added, “Why did you invite them here anyway, you have made it painfully obvious that you don't trust her.”
Max smiled, “Haven't you ever heard that old saying 'Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer,' well thats exactly what I am planning on doing.” he told her.
Isabel shook her head, “You know Max this will go a lot simpler if you would try not to see her as the enemy.” she reminded him before leaving the room. Isabel was annoyed with her younger brother. Even though she was the oldest he always liked to be in charge no matter what. She thought about calling their mom and asking her to speak with him but decided against it, as she entered her bedroom she decided to make another phone call instead. She called Jonathan and got Elizabeth Parkers phone number.
Liz had just finished dinner when the phone rang. It was almost 7:00 and she figured it was Maria calling to say she would be late. “Hello.” she said as she picked up the phone.
“Hello, is this Elizabeth Parker?” Isabel asked.
Liz politely answered, “Yes.”
“My name is Isabel Whitman, Jase was my younger brother.” she said softly.
Liz suddenly felt very nervous, “Mrs. Whitman...” she repeated then added, “I was sorry to hear about Jase, I know it must be a difficult time for your family.” she said sincerely.
“Thank you Miss Parker and please call me Isabel.” she said.
“You can call me Liz, I rarely go by Elizabeth.” Liz told her.
“Alright Liz, I am calling because I know things did not go as well as they could have at your first meeting with my brother Max but I wanted to let you know that the whole family is anxious to meet with Jessica. My son Jefferey is only a few months younger then your daughter and is so excited to meet his cousin.” she said then added, “And it would of course mean so much to my parents as well to know Jase's daughter.”
Liz was surprised by the sincerity in her voice, she wasn't really sure what to say, “I didn't even know Jessie had a cousin.” she said truthfully.
“Yes, Jefferey is turning 4 in just a few weeks actually. So please consider coming for at least a week, it would mean so much to us and I promise to keep Max on his best behavior.” she told her.
Liz hesitated, “Well I will have to check with my employer, to see if I am able to take the time right now.” she said then added, “If I am able to get away, I will consider it.”
“Thank you I hope that I didn't make you to uncomfortable, I just wanted to let you know that we aren't all as abrasive as my little brother.” she told her before saying good bye.
Liz hung up the phone just as Maria walked into the room. “So who was that?” she asked.
Liz tuned to Maria, “that was Isabel Whitman, Jase's older sister, she called to ask me to please consider coming.”
“Well I think you should go.” she told her.
“I don't know Maria, I really don't like the idea of going there and being alone with Maxwell Evans.” she told her.
“Thats just it, you won't be going alone...I am going with you.” she offered.
Liz smiled, “Really, that would be so great, what about your CD?” she asked not wanting to cause her friend any troubles.
Maria laughed, “I worked everything out with Sam to delay the release date just a little bit.” she told her.
“I don't want to cause you any trouble Maria.” Liz said.
Maria shook her head, “No it will be fine really, I hated the way those last two songs were coming out and now I will have a chance to work on them the way I want.” she explained.
Liz hugged Maria, “You are the best friend ever. Thank you so much.”
“So does that mean we are going then.” Maria asked.
Liz shook her head, “Well it would be nice for Jessica to meet to some of her family. I just found out she has a cousin who is almost the same age as she is.” Liz told her then added, “And she would get to meet her grandparents too...that would be really nice for her.”
“Then its decided we are going.” Maria told her then added, “Who knows maybe I will find the man of my dreams in Roswell, New Mexico.” she teased.
What happened to Billy?” Liz laughed.
“On the outs, he wants to get married and have babies.” maria told her.
“And you don't?” she asked.
Maria shook her head, “No I do, I just finally realized that I don't want to with him.”
Isabel was just about to turn out the light when Alex appeared in the door way, “I was beginning to think that you fell asleep in Jefferey's room.” she told him.
Alex walked over and climbed into bed, “I almost did. Jefferey said to tell Uncle Max that he is upset with him.”
Isabel laughed, “Really why is that?” she asked.
“He said that I do not do as good a job with the stories as mommy and Uncle Max kept you waiting to long.” he told her.
Isabel smiled, “Oh thats so sweet.” she said then added, “you really are an awful story teller.” she teased him.
Alex pulled his wife into his arms and whispered, “Yeah but I'm pretty good at other things.”
Isabel stared seductively into his eyes, “Show me...” she said just before he captured her lips with his own.

sorry it took so long to get this part posted. I was dealing with some writers block for a little bit. Hope you like this part.
Chapter 5
Liz looked around at her beautiful surroundings of the plane that Maxwell Evans arranged for them to fly in, it was incredible. She had never seen such extravagance in her life. The flight attendant's name was Sabrina and she was a lovely young woman, who had taken every opportunity to make sure there flight was enjoyable. Liz took in a deep breath and tried to relax...no matter how many times she flied it was always a struggle for her. Memories of her parents death always seemed to find a way to creep into her thoughts.
Jessica patted her hand, “Its ok mommy, auntie Maria and I are here with you.”
Liz smiled, “Thank you Jessie, that makes me feel much better.” she said trying to sound convincing.
“Is everything alright Miss Parker?” Sabrina asked.
Liz closed her eyes as the plane began to level out, “Yes I'm fine. I just don't really enjoy flying very much.” she admitted.
“Oh I understand, it took me months to get used to it but now I fly all over the place.” she admitted.
Liz smiled, “I hope one day I can get used to it too.” was all she said.
Sabrina looked over to Jessica, “Would you like to watch a movie?” she asked her.
Liz shook her head, “Thats alright we don't want to be an inconvenience to anyone.”
Sabrina smiled, “Its no trouble really Miss Parker. Mr. Evans wanted you to have a very relaxing and enjoyable flight, he took the liberty of having the entire Disney catalog of movies stored into the in flight library so Miss Jessica would not be bored.” she explained.
“That was very nice of him.” was all Liz said.
Jessica was very excited at the prospect of watching her favorite movie on the plane, “Do you have Cinderella?” she asked.
Sabrina smiled, “I sure do. I will cue it up now to play if that is alright?” she asked Liz.
Liz shook her head, “Thats fine thank you.”
In no time at all Jessica was entranced her movie. Maria glanced over and saw the expression on Liz face, “Its not just the flight is it?”
Liz shook her head, “No.. Maria I hope I am doing the right thing in going there.” she said worriedly.
Maria laughed, “Its going to be fine. Maxwell Evans will see that you are a wonderful woman and a fabulous mother and that will be that.” she assured her.
I hope so.” she told her.
“Who knows he might even fall for you.” Maria teased her.
Liz shook her head, “Please, that is the last thing I need.” she laughed.
“Well you never know, he is pretty good looking.” Maria reminded her.
“Really you think so. I kind of think the obnoxious, arrogant, controlling aspects of his personality take away from his good looks.” Liz told her.
“Who is arrogant Mommy?” Jessie asked.
Liz glanced down at her not realizing that she had been listening, “The prince who owns the castle.”
“OH, ok.” Jessica said then went back to watching her movie.
Maria and Liz looked at each other and laughed, the rest of the flight was quiet they watched the movie and then Jessica took a short nap, afterwards they had a wonderful lunch prepared by the Evans family personal in flight chief. Sabrina explained that Mr. Evans usually flew to New York at least once a week for business so the family kept a full staff at all times. Liz tried hard to relax but was unable to the entire trip, no matter how much she tried not to think about her parents it still was very hard. She remembered the day just like it was yesterday, Thomas had come over to the house to tell her and Bethany about her parents accident. They plane they were on went down due to bad weather, everyone on board was killed. Liz was glad when the plane landed she sniffled in a bit and wiped her eyes dry.
Sabrina smiled as Liz left the plane, “I am sorry Miss Parker that we were unable to make the flight more enjoyable for you.”
Liz shook her head, “Oh please do not apologize, it was a lovely flight. Everything was wonderful I just have a difficult time with flying thats all.” she admitted. Liz took Jessica's hand into her own as they walked toward the terminal. “I am not sure what we do from here.” Liz said to Maria.
Maria nodded and pointed over in the direction of a middle aged man who was heading toward them, “Don''t worry I think its been taken care of.” she whispered softly.
“Miss Parker? My name is James...I will be your driver while your here, please allow me to escort you to your limousine.” He told her.
“Thank you Sims.” Liz told him then added, “Is Mr. Evans going to be meeting us at the house then?”
“I believe so Miss...He regretted that his schedule would not allow him the privilege of meeting you and Miss Jessica himself but he was other wise detained.” he explained.
Liz didn't mind, the longer she had without having to meet with Maxwell Evans the better she thought to herself. Jessica was so excited to see the limousine as James opened the door for them all, “Mommy this is so wonderful, do you think that we are going to a castle?” she asked her voice filled with excitement.
Liz smiled, “I don't know, we will have to see won't we.”
Maria slid into the car next to her, “So how are you doing so far?” she asked.
“My stomach is a mess but I am determined to make a good impression. I want this to go smoothly for Jessica's sake.” Liz whispered softly. They were quite as they drove the rest of the way to the house. It was not a long drive only about 35 minutes from the airport until they reached the house. Liz looked out the window as they pulled up to the front of the house. She couldn't believe her eyes, it was huge. Jessica cried with delight as she got out of the car, “Oh look mommy it is a castle!”
IT almost was a castle, the entire exterior of the house was done in old brick. IT was at least 4 stories high and the front lawns where perfectly kept. Liz took Jessica's hand into her own and followed Sims and Maria into the house. Once inside the James introduced them to the butler, Sims and he showed them to the their rooms.
Liz couldn't get over the inside of the house, the floors were a beautiful travertine tile and all the wood work was a deep rich mahogany that made the whole room seem warm and inviting. Once they reached the top floor Sims led them down a long hallway, “Mr. Evans had this wing opened for you Miss Parker. He thought you might enjoy the views of the lake and the gardens that this side of the estates has to offer.
“That was very considerate of him.” Liz said politely.
“This is your room, Miss Parker.” Sims informed her as he opened a large set of double doors. Liz mouth almost dropped open as she took in the grandeur of the room, it was beautiful. The walls were a soft creamy white that complimented the rich gold and wine colored fabrics that were chosen for the bedding, drapes, and chairs. There was a huge four poster bed made of solid mahogany and a lovely marble fire place that added to the beauty of the room. Jessica jumped up in down and tugged on her hand, “See mommy it is a castle.”
“I think your right sweetie, it is just like a castle.” Liz told her as she walked over and looked out on the terrace. Just below her room was a large garden with several different variety of rose bushes and near that was a large lake surrounded by beautiful trees. Liz turned to Sims, “Do you think the family would mind very much if I took some photographs of the landscaping around their home?”
“I can answer for all of us when I say that you may take pictures of what ever you like.” Isabel said as she walked into the room, he son Jefferey holding her hand tightly. “Hello Liz, I am Isabel Whitman, we spoke on the phone, and this shy fellow is my son Jefferey.”
“OH hello. Its nice to meet you, this is Jessica and this is my friend Maria.” Liz introduced them.
Isabel smiled, “Jessica you are a very beautiful little girl and I am very happy to meet you.” she said noticing the resembles that the child had to her brother. “Maria, I am so glad you were able to come with Liz. I am also a fan of yours, I love your music.” she told her.
“Thank you, thats very nice of you to say.” Maria told her.
“We are having a large get together to welcome Liz and Jessica to the family, I know I would love it and so would my husband if you would do us the honor of singing for everyone, of course only if you want to?” Isabel told her.
Maria smiled, “Oh of course I will sing. Liz is my best friend and I would love being apart of that.” she told her.
Sims cleared his throat, “Excuse me Mrs. Whitman, I was just about to show Miss Jessica and Miss Da Lucia their rooms. Is it alright if I continue.”
Isabel smiled, “Of course Sims.” she said sweetly. “Liz can I have a moment to speak with you?”
Liz nodded as Maria took Jessica's hand in hers, “Come on sport lets go see our rooms.” she encouraged her.
Jessica was busy chatting with her new friend Jefferey. “Can Jefferey come along as well?” she pleaded.
Isabel nodded her head, “Of course.” she told him as he followed along Maria and Sims through a side door that attached Liz's room to another.
“I wanted to ask if you had spoken to Jessica about Jase at all, please don't think I am telling you that you have to. I just was wondering what you had decided to tell her about us?” Isabel asked once they were alone.
Liz smiled, “Well the truth is I haven't told her yet but I am planning to, maybe now that she has met with you and Jefferey that will open up the door for me to tell her about her daddy.”
Isabel slid her hand into her pocket and pulled out a small locket, inside was a photo of Bethany and Jase, “My mother gave this to me when I was little, it had photo's of her and my father in it...I just thought if you don't mind I could give it to Jessica. There is a photo of you and Jase inside, Max found a nice shot of the two of you together when you were on your trip in Mexico from some of Jase things, he had it redone to fit the locket.” she explained as she showed Liz. She smiled, it was a lovely photo of her sister and Jase, they were smiling and seemed like an ideal couple. She remembered Beth telling her about that photo it was taken not to long after she and Jase began dating. She wiped her eyes as tears welled up in them. Isabel could see how visibly upset she was and regretted having cause her pain, “Oh Liz I am sorry. I didn't mean to bring up painful memories.” she told her as she closed the locket.
Liz shook her head and wiped the last of her tears dry, “No really its fine, its a lovely picture and it will be a lovely gift for Jessica.” she told her.
Isabel smiled, “I will let you give it to her, when your ready.” she told her softly.
Liz was just about to thank her for being so understanding when Jessica came running back into the room, “Mommy, hurry and come see my room. Its so pretty, the whole room is Cinderella.” she told her.
Liz laughed, “Ok lets go see.” she said as she followed her through the joining bathroom and into the other room. It was completely done in a Cinderella motif. “This is such a beautiful room, your so lucky.” Liz told her.
“My room is just across the hall, it is gorgeous, Liz you have to see the view from in there.” maria told her. “The balcony overlooks the pool area and there is a huge fountain. It is so beautiful.”
“Well I am going to let you get settled in. Come on Jefferey lets go see if daddy is home.” Isabel told them. “Oh dinner will be at 6:00. I hope that will be alright.
Liz nodded that it would be fine, then she turned her attention back to Jessica who was busy discovering all the wonderful new things for her to play with. After they got settled in both Liz and Maria showered and got dressed for dinner. Liz was nervous about seeing Maxwell again and wanted to make a good impression, she wasn't really sure why it matter so much to her but it did. Liz, Jessica and Maria all headed to the formal dinning room right at six. Isabel, Jefferey, and her husband Alex were all there waiting for them.
Isabel introduced Alex to them both, “This is my husband, Alex.” she said then pointing to Liz she said, “This is Jessica's mom, Elizabeth Parker, and this is her friend...”
Alex interrupted her, “Maria Da Luca, I am a huge fan of your work.” he said enthusiastically as he shook her hand.
Isabel began laughing, “Ok Alex you can let go of her hand now.” she teased him.
Alex looked a little embarrassed, “I'm sorry, I just really enjoy your work.” he told her again.
Maria laughed, “Its not a problem really.”
Liz laughed, “She means that too, she thrives on the attention so feel free to gush over her.”
Maria smiled, “What can I say, it's true.” she laughed as they took their places at the table. Jessica began chatting with Jefferey, Liz could see that the two of them were quickly becoming friends. She learned a lot about both Alex and Isabel as they enjoyed their dinner and chatted. Liz was relieved that Max wasn't there. She smiled, maybe this visit wouldn't be so bad after all.
IT was well past 9:00 when they said good night and made there way to there rooms. Liz was heading upstairs to her room with Maria and Jessica when Sims called to her, “Miss, if you don't mind; Mr. Evens would like to speak with you in his office.” he said politely.
Liz looked at Maria, “Would you get Jessie ready for bed for me?”
Maria nodded her head, “Not a problem, come on cute stuff lets go get into our PJ's.” she said as they headed up the stairs. Liz followed Sims to max office dreaded the encounter the whole way. Sims opened the door for her and then closed it as he left. Liz stood there in the door way not really sure what she should do.
Max motioned for her to sit down, “I am sorry I was not able to meet with you at the air port.” he told her as he walked over to the bar.
Liz sat down on the sofa, “Its understandable, I am sure you were busy.” she told him.
“I was, thank you for understanding.” he said then added, “Would you like a drink?” he offered as he stood at the bar in his office.
Liz shook her head, “No thank you, I don't drink alcohol.” she told him.
Max smiled, “I don't either. I wasn't offering you alcohol just then, I was wondering if you might like anything to drink, such as a soda, lemonade, water or tea?”
Liz felt like he was purposefully trying to tarp her, “No I am not thirsty.” she said stiffly.
“I hope your rooms are acceptable?” Max asked.
“Yes, they are lovely thank you.” she said trying not to sound so annoyed or nervous.
“I had hoped to be home sooner in order to have dinner with you and Jessica but I was not able to leave my meeting.”
“Thats alright, we had a lovely dinner with Isabel and Alex.” she told him.
Max smiled, “I am glad you enjoyed yourself.” he said, then he added, “I spoke with Sabrina she mentioned that you did not enjoy your flight in from New Port. She said you seemed upset during the flight...was it something in particular that made you unhappy?” he asked her.
“The flight was fine really, thank you for going to all the trouble.” Liz said softly.
“It was no trouble, I am sorry that my crew was unable to make the flight more enjoyable for you though.” he said watching her carefully.
Liz tried to be polite, “I was just a little bit uncomfortable on the flight but it wasn't anything to do with the staff, they were all wonderful.” she told him.
Max poured himself a drink of cola over crushed ice, then walked over and sat down at his desk, “If the staff was so wonderful why did you have an uncomfortable flight Miss Parker?” he asked her again.
Liz hated feeling like she was being interrogated, “I don't like flying really.”
Max glanced up at her, “Really I would have thought someone in your line of work would probably fly all the time.” he commented.
Liz shook her head, “I do fly a lot, but I don't like it.”
“So you have a fear of flying then?” he said.
Liz shook her head, “No not a fear exactly...its just” she was beginning to feel frustrated by his attitude.
Max leaned back in his chair and stared intently at her, “Well what would you call it then, the flight was wonderful you said so yourself and yet you were tense and uncomfortable the entire time.”
Liz took in a deep breath, “What exactly is the point you are trying to make Mr. Evans?”
Max sipped his drink, “ I guess I was just concerned for Jessica, thats all?”
Liz shook her head, “What about Jessica?” she snapped at him.
“Well it just seems to me that she is going to end up thinking that flying in a plane is something to be afraid of . She sees that you are upset and it might cause her to become afraid as well.” he told her, “ I would just hate to see her have the wrong idea about flying in a plane because you can not handle your irrational fears.”
Liz could feel her cheeks flush as she struggled to keep her temper under control, “Mr. Evans, I am not afraid of flying and it was not as if I made a scene on the plane I just had a lot on my mind and I was a bit tense. I hardly think that Jessica will be permanently turned off to flying because of me.”
Max shook his head, “There really isn't any need for you to become angry Miss Parker, I was merely pointing out a fact to you to help make you aware that your fears could be affecting your daughter, something I am sure you don't want to have happen.” he said coldly.
Liz eyes stung with tears, she sniffled in and turned to leave. She was not going to give him the satisfaction of seeing her upset. She was almost at the door when the sound of his voice stopped her, “I see Miss Parker that you are just as unwilling to discuss this as you were Jessica's schooling.” he told her as he stood up from his desk.
Liz turned around and faced him, “Mr. Evans, I am not afraid to fly. I tend to be emotional when I fly, it is something that I struggle with...my parents were killed in a plane crash and truthfully since then when ever I fly it reminds me of them, of my loss and so yes I am uncomfortable flying. Jessica is to little to understand but one day I will explain it all to her until then she has shown no signs of being afraid to fly because of me.” she told him then she turned to leave closing the door behind her. She took in a deep breath and headed toward the stairs as fresh tears rolled down her cheek. She hated the fact that he was able to have an effect on her.
Max sat back in his chair. He had forgotten about her parents dying in a plane crash, of course that would effect her. He let out a heavy sigh, he had to stop searching for flaws with her and try to get to know her, he thought to himself. He pushed himself away from his desk and headed upstairs, it was late and he was tired. He really did regret having not being there to meet his niece this afternoon when they arrived. He was just about to go to his room when he decided that he should go and apologies to his guest first.
Liz walked into her room to find Maria and Jessica sitting in the middle of her large bed. “So everything ok?” Maria asked.
Liz shook her head, “Well I feel like I just got called to the principle office but other then that it went well.”
Maria gave her friend a sympathetic look, “Chin up it will be better tomorrow.” She told him then added, “Ok well I am off to sleep in my over sized large luxurious bed.”
Liz waved good night. She watched as Maria left the room then she walked over to the dresser and pulled out the necklace. She opened the locket and looked at the picture of her sister and Jase. There were times when she missed Beth very much, and this was one of them. She walked over to the bed were Jessica was laying and sat down next to her. She didn't notice the fact that Maria hadn't closed the door properly, having left it ajar. She also didn't notice as she began to tell Jessie about her dad that Maxwell Evens was standing just outside the door.
“Jessica sweetie, I have something I want to give you. Its from Isabel.” Liz told her.
Jessica smiled and her eyes grew wide with excitement, “Oh mommy is it a present?”
“Yes it is a very special present.” she said handing her the beautiful solid gold locket with a small diamond stud in the center.
Jessica reached out and carefully took the locket in her hand, “Oh mommy its so pretty, is it really mine?” she asked.
Liz nodded, “Yes and if you open it there is a picture inside.” she told her.
Jessica little fingers fumbled around trying to undo the latch and after a few moments the clasp opened and she saw the pictures inside. “Oh mommy thats you...but who is that man in the picture?”
Max was just about to knock and ask to come in when her heard Liz voice, “Well sweetie that mans name was Jase and he was your daddy.” Liz told her softly.
Jessica stared at the photo for along time then she looked into Liz eyes, “He looks like Isabel doesn't he mommy?”
Liz smiled she was an observant little girl, “Yes he does actually, thats because Jase was Isabel's younger brother, and you know what that means that she is your Auntie Isabel.” she explained.
Jessica smiled, “I like her mommy she is nice, I'm glad she is my auntie just like auntie Maria.”
Liz smiled, “You know what else, Jefferey is your cousin and Alex is your uncle.” she told her.
Jessica laughed, “I have a cousin!” she was so excited, “I have a cousin just like Nilly.”
Liz wrapped her in her arms, “Yea just like Nilly, wait until you tell her about your new family. She will be excited for you.”
Jessica smiled, “Mommy does this mean that we can have my cousin come to my house and visit us too?”
Liz shook her head, “Of course we can.” she told her.
Jessica closed the locket and handed it back to Liz, “Can I wear it now?” she asked.
Liz helped her put it on, “Yes but be careful with it ok, its very special.” she told her.
Jessica shook her head, “Oh I will, I promise.”
Liz stared into her eyes for a moment, “Jessie is there anything you want to ask about your daddy, because if there is you know you can always ask me ok?” she asked a bit surprised at how easily she seemed to be taking all of this.
Jessica yawned and stretched a bit, “Where is my daddy? Am I going to meet him too?” she asked sleepily.
Liz shook her head, “No honey I am afraid not. He wanted to meet you very much, but he got sick and he went be in heaven.”
Jessica shook her head, “Like your mommy and daddy?” she asked softly.
“Yes just like my mommy and daddy.” she told her.
Jessica yawned again, “Mommy do you think it will be ok for me to call Isabel my Auntie?”
Liz scooped her up into her arms, “I think she would like that very much.” she told her as she headed towards the door to Jessica's room. “Now I think its time for you to get some sleep.”
Max stood back from the door, he felt truly moved by the exchange that he over heard between the two of them. He closed the door and walked back down the hall, towards his own room. He was really more confused then ever about Elizabeth Parker, she was nothing like the person that his brother spoke of or described in his journals. Was it really possible that someone could change so completely he wondered.
