Title: Pieces of Me
Author: Emma
Disclaimer: I don’t own anything; I’m just borrowing it for the purposes of this story.
Category: M/L
Rating: ADULT
Authors Note: Some of the ideas used in this story have come from Will & Grace. The events will be different obviously, sine Max is not gay.
Summery: Max and Liz have been best friends since childhood. They’ve been through most of life’s obstacles together, as well as relationships. What will happen when they make a decision to make drastic change to their relationship? And most importantly will their friendship survive?

One

“I’m coming,” Max called out as he rushed out of the bathroom, sweat pants slung low on his hips, to answer the pounding on the door.

He opens the door and is surprised when he finds his best friend standing on the other side. Her face is read and puffy and tears are still pouring down her face.

“Liz, what’s wrong?” He asks panicked. The Liz Parker that Max Evans knew very rarely cried. Those incidents were normally saved for her other best friend and coincidentally his sister in law Maria.

“We broke up,” she cried and fell into his open arms and began to sob all over again.

Max felt his heart fall for Liz. They both knew that the break up with her boyfriend of a year, Sean, was coming eventually. Liz had confided in him that things weren’t really working, but he still hated to see Liz cry.

“What happened sweetie?” He asked as he led her into his apartment and towards the couch.

“He showed up at the apartment earlier, I haven’t heard or seen him in over a week, and he got angry when I asked where he had been,” she explained as she dried her eyes on the sleeve of her top.

Sean had a habit of disappearing on Liz for days at a time, and every time it happened Liz would think of every scenario to where he was, and what he was doing, almost sending herself crazy. Their relationship left Liz upset more times than happy and other than her tears; Max thought it was best they had broken up.

“So I told him to pack up anything he had left there and to fuck off,” she said.

“You did the right thing,” Max told her.

“You think?” Liz asked a little unsure. Liz Parker was 29 years old and other than Max, she was the only one of her friends who wasn’t married. Max however was in a serious relationship and Liz’s biggest fear was that she was going to end up alone.

“Of course,” Max assured her. “You can do so much better than a guy like Sean, Liz,” Max said. Secretly Max hadn’t ever liked Sean and had always wondered what Liz had seen in him. Max just wanted Liz to be happy and that was most of the reason he didn’t like Sean, because he didn’t make Liz happy.

Max wrapped his arms around her then. “I’m going to end up alone,” Liz cried against his chest. “Why isn’t there a guy out there for me, Max?”

“There is,” Max told her as he tried to sooth her by running a hand through her long hair.

“Where is he then? Everyone else has someone that loves them except me. It’s not fair Max,” she cried.

Max didn’t know what to say to make her feel better; he didn’t know if there were words to make Liz feel better about the situation.

That was how they were when Max’s girlfriend Katie walked through the front door ten minutes later. She stopped short at the sight of her boyfriend, half naked with Liz in his arms.

“Hi,” she said trying to hide her surprise.

“Hi,” Max smiled at her.

Liz sat up then and dried her eyes. “Hi Katie,” she said.

“Hey Liz, how are you?” She asked.

Liz shrugged; “I should go,” she whispered and then turned to Max. “Thank you,” she said.

Max smiled and leaned in and left a kiss on her forehead, “I’ll come by later ok?”

“Ok,” she nodded.

She stood up then, “I’ll see you later Katie,” she said, her head down in an effort to hide the tear tracks on her face, before she continued towards the door and let herself out.

Max approached his girlfriend who was placing a grocery bag down on the kitchen bench.

“Hey,” he said as he kissed her. “How was your day?” He asked.

“It was good,” she smiled, her face turned curious then, “What’s up with Liz?” She asked.

It wasn’t unusual to come home and find Liz in the apartment she shared with Max, and even though Katie knew that they were only friends, it still unnerved her a little at how affectionate they were. She wondered if she would ever get used to her boyfriend sharing such a close relationship with a women that wasn’t her.

“Her and Sean broke up,” Max said.

“Oh,” Katie said.

“Yeah,” he frowned.

Max moved around the kitchen putting the groceries away then.

“Did you get final numbers for dinner tomorrow night?” Katie asked him then.

They were having a family dinner the following night. Katie thought it would be a nice idea that their families get to know each other a little better.

Max and Katie had been dating on and off three years but she had moved in with Max six months earlier. So far, she thought things were going well and she was hoping that things were going to become more serious in the next few months. She wanted to get married and have children and she knew that Max also wanted a family.

“Yeah I spoke to Mum today,” Max said from inside the fridge. “So there will be seven,” he said.

Katie frowned as she did the numbers in her head, “Seven?” She questioned, that seemed like too many.

“Yeah,” Max nodded, “Mum & Dad, Isabel & Alex, Michael & Maria, and Liz,” he told her.

“Why is Liz coming?” Katie asked.

Max looked up from his perusal of the food, “Liz is family, Katie you know that,” he said.

Not wanting to get into an argument Katie sighed. She should have realised that they couldn’t have a dinner party without inviting Liz. It wasn’t that Katie didn’t like Liz; she thought she was a lovely person. Katie just hated the fact that Liz was part of every part of Max’s life, including sometimes their relationship. She knew she would be able to accept their relationship more if there were some boundaries between them but in the three years that Katie had been with Max she had come to realise there weren’t any at all.

“It’s just that I thought this was just going to be our immediate families, a chance for them to get to know each other,” she explained.

“It is,” he said.

“Ok, well I understand that you and Liz are close but I’m not inviting Lisa or Kerri,” she told him.

Lisa and Kerri were Katie’s best friends. Truthfully, Max didn’t really like them all that much, they were bitchy girls and he didn’t particularly like the way Katie acted around them.

“Why would you invite them?” Max asked.

“That’s what I mean, Max we’re not inviting best friends, just family,” she sighed.

“Liz might be my best friend but she is also family, Katie,” Max said stiffly.

Katie sighed again, “Ok,” she told him.

“So is all of your family coming?” Max asked then.

In the past, Katie’s family had always been difficult to organise anything with. Her parents still worked and she was especially close to her brother and his wife.

“Yes they’re coming,” she smiled.

“Great,” Max nodded.

***

After dinner Max pulled on his joggers and walked to the freezer. He pulled out the tub of fudge brownie which he knew was in there for this type of thing.

Katie walked out of their bedroom, freshly showered. “What are you doing?” she asked.

“I’m heading over to Liz’s,” he explained.

Looking at the time Katie frowned. “At this time?” she asked.

Both Katie and Max worked hectic schedules and this was the only time they really have to spend together. Katie resented the fact that she had to share this time with Liz.

“Yeah,” Max nodded. “Liz is upset and she needs someone to talk to.”

“Can’t she ring Maria or something?” Katie whined as she approached Max and wrapped her arms around his waist hoping to entice him to stay and have an early night with her instead.

“I’m sure she’s already talked to Maria,” Max grinned knowing what his girls were like. Isabel, Maria and Liz could all talk anyone’s ear off and he new his sister and sister in law would have already given Liz their opinion by now on the Sean situation.

“I won’t be late,” Max said as he pulled back from the hug and headed for the door.

“You’re taking the ice cream?” Katie whined then. Fudge brownie was her favourite and they hardly ever had it in the house.

“Yep sorry, but it’s an emergency,” he grinned.

Walking back Max kissed Katie gently. “I’ll see you later honey,” he said.

Katie waited for the door to shut before she frowned. When she had moved in with Max it had taken her a while to get used to the fact that Liz lived in the same apartment building, on the same floor as him. At first, Liz used to let herself into the apartment without knocking but Katie had soon put a stop to that after she had walked in on some unideal situations.

With a final huff, she picked up a packet of chips and headed for a lonely night on the couch with the TV.

Wow, thank you so much everyone. I haven't received a response like this to a first part in a while.

Anyway I'm back with a new part. I like hearing your points of view on the Max/Katie/Liz situation.

Just a note for anyone who might have read the first part and went, "oh not another best friends who are really in love story". I hope that if you continue reading you'll realise that this definetely isn't planned as one of those.

Enjoy :D .

Two

When Max arrived home the next night Katie was already there busy in the kitchen preparing dinner.

“Hey honey,” he greeted as he walked through the door.

“Hey,” she replied looking up from what she was doing and accepting the kiss he offered.

“Let me just get changed and I’ll come and help,” he told her.

When he came out Katie was standing looking at the food in front of her.

“What are you cooking?” He asked.

“I have no idea,” she sighed then.

“Oh ok?” He frowned. She had been planning this dinner party for weeks and expected her to have already planned the menu.

“My parents called,” she said then, “Dad’s sick so they’re not coming.”

“Oh,” Max said. He could tell from Katie’s mood that she was disappointed and refrained from saying anything that might upset her. It was hardly her fault that her parents couldn’t put themselves out for anyone other than themselves.

“So I rang and told Ben not to bother coming either,” she added.

Max hoped that she wasn’t hinting he should call his family, because there was no way he would do that.

“Ok well then if it’s just my family how about we just order Chinese?” Max suggested.

The Evans’ were simple people and some of the food in front of Max looked like it was going to take hours to cook and probably wouldn’t have been that appealing, especially to Michael.

“We’ve got plenty of wine and everyone loves Chinese.”

“Ok sounds good,” Katie shrugged. She didn’t really feel much like cooking anyway so she began to pack up the food in front of her and put it away.

Max’s family arrived an hour later and soon the room was noisy with chatter as everyone caught up.

“Max honey where’s Liz?” Dianne Evans asked.

Katie stiffened from her spot next to Max but he didn’t seem to notice it. Although all the Evans were lovely to her and hugged her in greeting, trying to make her feel welcome, it did upset her that they seemed to be closer to Liz.

“She should be here,” Max said.

Max and Isabel met Liz, Maria and Alex in year three and they instantly became friends. Roswell was a small town so they all lived close enough

A few seconds later there was a knock on the door and Max got up to let Liz in. As soon as Liz entered, the apartment was once again alive with noise as each of the Evans family rose to hug her.

“Oh sweetie it’s so good to see you,” Dianne Evans said as she pulled Liz down onto the couch in between her and Phillip. They spent the next ten minutes talking while the others decided what to order.

“So Michael how’s work?” Katie asked trying to make conversation. Out of all of Max’s family Katie found it the hardest to get to know Michael. Her and Max had been together on and off for the past 3 years and she still felt that she didn’t know anything about Michael except for what Max had told her.

Michael seemed surprised by her question, “Um good thanks. You?” He replied.

Katie smiled politely as his question. She doubted Michael even knew what she did but it was nice that he was at least trying to continue the conversation.

“Yeah it’s good, busy but that’s good,” she smiled.

Katie was a financial advisor. It wasn’t a very glamorous job but she enjoyed it and it paid well.

She turned her attention to Isabel then who was starting to show in her pregnancy. “How are you feeling Isabel?”

“Fat,” Isabel replied bluntly. Katie didn’t think she would ever get used to Isabel’s ice queen demeanour. She was the opposite of Max and sometimes it was hard to believe that they were twins. Her personality was also a vast contrast to Alex who was always happy and smiling.

Alex laughed at his wife. “You look beautiful Isabel, don’t you think so Katie?” He asked.

“Definitely, you have this glow to your face and it’s like you radiate,” she added.

“Thank you,” Isabel smiled it always felt nice to get a compliment of someone who wasn’t family.

When the food arrived, they all moved to the dinning table that Katie had insisted they buy a few months earlier. Max had thought it was ugly and too big but Katie really wanted it so he had given in. It came in handy for nights like this as they all took a seat around it comfortably.

“Just sit anywhere,” Max said and Katie watched in surprise as the Evans family sat at the table in the same places they had for years.

Phillip sat at the head with Dianne on one side and Isabel on the other. Alex sat next to Isabel and Michael and Maria took the seats next to Dianne. That left Max at the head of the table and Liz had slipped into the seat next to him.

“Oh I’m so sorry Katie, that was so rude of me,” she said when she realised. “I didn’t even think when everyone started sitting down.”

Max hopped up, retrieved an extra seat, and placed it next to Maria so that Liz could sit on his other side and the table all looked away awkwardly as Katie slipped into the seat next to Max.

“I told you this table would come in handy,” she said to Max trying to ease the tension in the room.

“Yeah but that still doesn’t change the fact its ugly,” he grinned.

The talk continued all night and Katie sat politely and listened to them all interact. They had all known each other forever and they had stories about each other that went that far back as well.

“Do you remember the time that you and Max decided to run away?” Dianne Evans laughed as she talked to Liz.

Liz and Max both groaned and Katie looked between them curiously. “What happened?” She asked. She wanted to know these things about Max that everyone else knew.

“They packed some clothes and food in a bag, Liz took her dooner and half her bedroom and they hid out in the tree house Phillip built for the kids down the back yard,” Dianne explained.

“I went crazy when I found Max gone, and of course it never occurred to any of us that they hadn’t gone far. Nancy Parker called the Sheriff and we were scouting the streets for them. All the while these two were cuddled up under Liz’s dooner fast asleep in the tree house,” she laughed.

“It wasn’t funny at the time,” Phillip pointed out.

“That’s true,” Dianne agreed.

“We weren’t really running away anyway,” Liz replied. “We wanted to have a sleep over and you guys wouldn’t let us.”

“You two always wanted to have sleepovers,” Isabel laughed.

Both Liz and Max flushed bright red as the rest of the table laughed. Katie chuckled along with them not sure what was so funny but not wanting to feel left out.

The drinking, eating and talking went on four hours and it was past midnight when the Evans family said goodnight.

“Liz are we still on for shopping tomorrow?” Isabel asked as they walked to the front door.

“Yep but in the afternoon because I have to work…” she paused to look at her watch and frowned, “in five hours,” she answered.

“Yuk,” Maria agreed. “Call us when you get off work.”

“Will do.”

“Night guys, thanks for dinner,” Liz waved as she followed the rest of the Evans family out the door.

“Night,” Max and Katie called back.

Max sighed as he cast a look at his living room. There were wine glasses and Chinese take out boxers everywhere.

Katie moved around the house quickly and quietly picking up the wine glasses and carrying them back to the kitchen.

“Lets just go to bed, we can clean this up tomorrow,” Max suggested.

“No, I hate getting up to a dirty kitchen,” she answered.

Max could immediately tell that something was wrong but instead of asking, he started to help clean up the room instead.

They worked in silence and ten minutes later Max was standing with a tea towel in his hand while Katie washed the glasses and dishes.

“What’s wrong?” He finally asked unable to stand the silence any longer.

“Nothing,” she shook her head. The last thing Katie wanted to do was open her mouth and spew her insecurities. To confess to her boyfriend that she felt like the left out party in her own house during dinner.

“Yes there is,” Max said as he dried a glass, his face never leaving Katie’s.

Katie remained quiet so Max decided to keep talking. “I thought dinner was great,” he said. “Don’t you?”

“Yeah sure,” she replied vaguely.

“Did you have a nice time?” He asked picking up something in her tone.

“Yes,” she replied.

“Then what’s the problem?” He asked.

Katie sighed, it as obvious that Max wanted to talk. “I guess it’s just hard sometimes,” she confessed. “You’ve all know each other for so long and you have all these stories and memories together,” she told him.

“Of course we do, we’re family,” Max replied.

“It’s not just that,” she sighed again. “I see how much your parents love Liz, all your family does and sometimes I feel like everyone’s wondering why the hell you’re with me when you could be with Liz.”

Max stopped his drying and placed the glass down with a frown. “They don’t think that at all. Liz has been my best friend for most of my life and we’ve never been anything more than that. What’s this really about?” He asked. He knew that his family hadn’t done anything to make Katie feeling anything less that welcome into their family. Sure, his parents did love Liz but they also knew that Max and Liz were just friends.

“You don’t understand how hard it is, Max,” she whispered turning so she was facing him. “I know you and Liz are just best friends but it feels like it’s more than that sometimes. It feels like she’s more important than I am.”

“That’s not true,” Max said feeling his anger rising.

“I want to be your first priority,” Katie said.

Max opened his mouth but no words came out.

“I want to come before Liz,” she said. “I think this situation with her living down the hall is most of the problem. I think you should talk to Liz and see how she feels about moving. If she doesn’t want to we could start apartment hunting.”

Max placed the tea towel down calmly. He and Liz had bought their apartments together five years ago. It was a proud moment for both of them that they could financially afford to own their own places. He didn’t want to move and he knew Liz wouldn’t either.

Without a word Max turned and walked towards the door, grabbing his keys and a jacket on the way.

“Where are you going?” Katie cried.

“Out,” he snapped. “Don’t wait up.”

Katie raced to the door and watched as Max stormed down the hall. She half expected him to stop at Liz’s but he walked to the lift and stalked inside.

A few minutes later, from the window overlooking the street she watched him emerge from the building and begin walking up the street. She knew she should have kept quiet but once she had started opening up to Max and talking about her feelings, everything had come out. It was the truth. Katie was finding it increasingly difficult to deal with Liz’s place in Max’s life. When she couldn’t see him anymore, she moved to the lounge, sunk down, and cried.

Max walked up the street towards the local bar. He had his hand on the door and was about to walk inside when he stopped.

“Fucking hell,” he cursed. He couldn’t believe some of the things Katie had said. Did she really expect him to ask Liz to move out of their apartment building? That was ridiculous. But he was also hurt because in the three years that he and Katie had been together on and off he didn’t feel like he had ever put Liz first. When Katie needed him he was there, why did it have to be a choice between being a good boyfriend and being a good friend? Why couldn’t he be both?

He turned and headed back towards the apartment. He had to work tomorrow and the last thing he needed was another drink after all the wine he had already consumed that night.

He rode up tiredly in the lift and once he reached the hallway his apartment was on, he glanced between his door and Liz’s as contemplated what to do. With a tired sigh, he rooted around on his key ring for the one to Liz’s apartment and let himself in. The room was dark and he assumed she would already be in bed.

He pulled out his phone and typed a quick text.

I WONT BE HOME TONIGHT.

C YOU TMORROW.

MAX.

He knew Katie would be angry when she read it but he didn’t care right now. He was angry himself.

He walked quietly into Liz’s room and kicked off his shoes before pulling his jeans off.

Liz startled as he slipped into bed beside her. “Max?”

“Yeah it’s me. Shh go back to sleep,” he whispered.

“What are you doing here?” She asked sleepily glancing at the clock.

“It’s a long story,” he sighed.

“I have to be up in four hours,” she groaned.

“Then go back to sleep,” he said rubbing her back. “We’ll have lunch tomorrow,” he said.

“Ok,” she whispered.

A couple of minutes later he heard her breathing even out and he knew she had gone back to sleep. He closed his own eyes then feeling comforted by the sounds Liz’s was making and soon slumber also claimed him.

See you next week

Three

Liz Parker was confused when she woke up with an arm wrapped tightly around her and pressed against someone’s hard chest. It only took her a few minutes to remember it was Max and she frowned as she wondered why he was sleeping in her bed instead of his own a few metres up the hall.

She reached over and turned her alarm off before she disentangled herself with Max. He moved in his sleep and hugged her pillow and Liz smiled noticing that he still slept the same way after all these years.

She did her best to change into her work clothes in the dark. Pulling on her scrubs and comfortable shoes. Liz was a radiologist. She loved everything about her job except the hours. She was head of her department now which meant she didn’t have to do many all nighters anymore but she still did her fair share of early shifts.

“Hey,” Max whispered groggily.

Liz turned startled by the sounds of his voice and pulled her jumper over her head before turning around.

“Hey,” she whispered kneeling on the bed. “It’s early go back to sleep,” she said.

“Ok,” he whispered.

“I’ll see you for lunch?” She asked remembering him mentioning it the night before.

“Yeah,” he nodded. He really needed to talk to her, he needed her advice.

Liz leaned in and kissed his cheek then. “See you later,” she whispered.

Max however was already fast asleep so Liz re-set her alarm for 7.30 so he wouldn’t be late for work and quietly left the apartment.

***

Katie looked up from her bowl of cereal as the door opened and Max walked in.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hi,” Max replied.

“Where did you stay last night?” She asked concerned. His message had been vague and she had barely slept at all last night worried about him.

“Liz’s,” he answered as he placed his keys down.

“Oh,” she said her frown deepening. She bit back the urge to point out that he done exactly what she had accused him of the night before.

“I didn’t know Liz had a spare bedroom,” she said then knowing well and good that she didn’t.

“She has a comfortable couch,” Max replied.

Katie studied his face, she wasn’t quite sure she believed that he had slept on the couch but she kept her mouth shut.

“I’m going to grab a shower before I’m late for work,” he said.

“Can we have lunch?” Katie called out knowing she would most likely be gone by the time he re-emerged. “To talk?” she added.

“I can’t today I have a meeting, what about tonight?” He suggested.

“Ok,” she nodded.

“I’ll see you later,” he responded then and walked into the bathroom.

Max hated fighting with anyone but especially with Liz and Katie. But he had no desire to just pretend everything was alright with Katie right now and for the first time in over a year, he actually contemplated ending things between them.

They had broken up a few times over the three years they had been together, but mainly over silly things and it never lasted long. But the past 12 months things had been wonderful which is why Max had asked her to move in. He had even been contemplating the idea of marriage lately but now he was completely second guessing his decisions. It was obvious that Katie had been hiding her issues with his family and Liz for a while and now he wondered what else she had been hiding from him.

Shaking his head, he stepped under the shower determined to forget about it for a few hours and concentrate on work instead.

***

“So you blurted it all out?” Kerri asked.

Needing someone to talk about things happening with Max, Katie called one of her best friends to have lunch with her. Kerri was a nurse so they were having lunch at a café on the hospital grounds.

“Yes,” Katie sighed.

“What did he say?” She asked.

Kerri had heard all about Liz and her quirky relationship with Max but she had never met her.

“He got angry and left. Ended up sleeping at her house.” She replied.

Kerri’s eyes went wide. “You’re kidding?”

“Nope,” she sighed. “I should have just kept my mouth shut.”

“No you shouldn’t have,” Kerri replied. “Max needs to understand how you feel. He has to understand that this relationship he has with Liz makes you feel insecure and that it’s affecting your relationship.”

“I know,” she nodded. Katie wondered then if that was the case. It wasn’t like Liz was chasing Max; she was simply being a friend and relying on a friend. Maybe she was the one in the wrong here.

“Just be honest with him, tell him how you feel,” Kerrie encouraged she stood up.

“I have to go,” she said regretfully.

Katie put some money down with Kerri’s and stood up. “Yeah I should get back to work too,” she said.

They were waling out of the café when Kerri’s glanced up and stopped.

“Isn’t that Max?” She asked.

“Where?” Katie asked surprised.

“Over there,” she pointed, “who’s the brunette?” she asked.

Katie frowned as she watched Max greet Liz with a hug before they linked hands and walked off towards the hospital.

“Liz,” Katie replied with a frown.

“Oh,” Kerri frowned.

“He told me he was having a lunch meeting,” she said.

“Maybe it go cancelled or something?” Kerri said trying to stop her friend from what could potentially be a major breakdown.

“Yeah maybe,” Katie whispered.

***

Liz led Max to the hospital cafeteria, it wasn’t fancy but the food was okay and Liz had to stay on site in case she was paged.

They grabbed a tray and a few minutes later they were sitting at a table near the window with sandwiches and fruit.

“So as much as I liked having a hot body like yours in my bed want to tell me what you were doing there?” Liz asked as she opened her sandwich and took a bite.

“Katie and I had a fight,” Max replied.

“About?”

“You,” he replied.

Liz froze mid bite and placed her sandwich down. “Wow it’s been a long time since I’ve caused a fight with you and a girlfriend. I think maybe it was high school and you were dating Pam Troy. What did I do this time?” She asked.

“You did nothing,” Max sighed. “Katie is just being ridiculous,” he said.

“About what?” Liz asked again.

“She thinks you’re too involved in our lives and that one of us should move,” he said.

Liz’s eyes grew wide. “You’re kidding?” She asked.

“Nope.”

“I thought she liked me,” Liz said sadly. All of a sudden, she wasn’t feeling very hungry.

“She does,” Max replied. “I think.”

“I don’t understand. She seemed fine last night?”

“She reckons mum and dad like you more than her and that they’re all hoping we’ll get together.”

Liz snorted, “Um hello, best friends for over twenty years. I think if we were going to hook up we probably would have in high school when I had a crush on you.”

It was Max’s turn to stop mid bite. “You had a crush on me in high school?” He asked.

Liz laughed. “Yeah, senior year but then I woke up and realised that our friendship was too good and too important to risk on a high school crush.”

“I contemplated asking you out at uni,” Max admitted then with a smile. “You were so hot and all the guys were chasing you.”

Liz blushed. “See we’ve had our moment and neither of us acted on it. Does she thing we would now?”

“It’s not that. I think she thinks everyone else wants us too.”

Liz sighed. “I guess I’ll just back off for a while,” she said. “We can just have lunch occasionally.” Liz shrugged.

It wasn’t like she spent a lot of time at Max’s or vice versa but she didn’t want to get in the way of Max’s relationship with Katie.

Max sat thinking the situation over for a while. He understood what Katie was saying but did he agree with it. No.

“Don’t do that,” he told her. “I’d miss you like crazy,” he told her.

“Me too but maybe if we give Katie some time she might come around,” Liz shrugged.

“Maybe,” Max sighed.

***

Katie was chopping vegetables when Max entered the apartment that night.

“Hi,” he said.

Katie didn’t look up from her chopping. “Hi.”

Max walked to the fridge, pulled out a bottle of wine, and poured himself a glass. Call it a bit of courage. He had been thinking about his situation with Katie all afternoon and truthfully, he was stuck between a rock and a hard place. He loved Katie but he wasn’t willing to sacrifice his relationship with Liz for her.

“How did your lunch meeting go?” She asked.

“Fine,” Max lied.

He frowned as Katie began chopping loudly and more erratically. “Take it easy on the poor carrots Kate,” he laughed.

Katie dropped the knife then and looked up. Her eyes were full of fire and Max took a sip to calm down.

“When did you start lying?” She asked.

Max frowned. “I had lunch with Kerri today at the hospital,” she told him.

Max gulped. “I knew you’d go off if you found out I was having lunch with Liz,” he shrugged.

“Of course I would have especially after you blew me off,” she yelled.

“I already made the plans with Liz before you asked,” he argued.

“I don’t care,” she said. “I wanted to talk about our relationship I think that’s a little more important than your lunch with Liz,” she said sarcastically.

“Well I needed to talk to someone about you and our relationship too,” Max replied.

“This is exactly what I mean,” Katie scoffed. “You always run to her first. Why can’t you talk to me?” She asked.

“Maybe because you’re acting like a spoilt brat.”

“Why? Because I don’t want to share my boyfriend?” She asked hurt by his words.

“You can’t have me all to yourself. I have family and friends just like you do. I don’t give you anything less because my best friend happens to be girl,” Max argued.

“Yes you do, and the worst part is that you don’t even know it. I should have come first today Max, not Liz,” she said.

“No that’s where you’re wrong. I had to come first. Me. I needed to talk to someone and that person was Liz.” He told her.

“You can’t keep doing this Max,” Katie sighed. “You need to set some boundaries in place and with your friendship with Liz.”

Max felt his hackles rise. Was she not hearing him?

“No I think you’re the one who needs to stop doing this Katie because you’re ruining our relationship. Liz and I are friends, period. Any other scenario you dreamed up is in your head only,” he snapped.

Katie felt tears spring to her eyes. “Its not that I don’t trust you. I just don’t see why Liz had to be such a major part of your life, a part you don’t want to let me be apart of.”

“What part is that? I asked you to move in, you’ve met my family, my friends all the important people in my life I don’t understand what else I can do?”

“I just need to feel like the most important person in you life,” Katie cried in response and that there was the crux of the problem because despite the fact he loved her Max knew he couldn’t give her that place.

“You’re very important to me,” Max argued.

“Am I?” she asked.

Max sighed then, “Yes but you aren’t the only important person in my life and you need to deal with that or…”

“Or what?” Katie asked. “What if I need Liz to back off, to give me some space to establish my place in your life?”

“I think that if you don’t feel like you already have an important part in my life after three years together you never will like feel you do,” He admitted honestly. “I can only tell you that I love you and that you’re important. I won’t give up Liz though so if you’re asking me too the answer is no.”

Katie was quiet as she stared at Max stunned. “Liz offered to back off today when I told her what was going on between us, she wants this to work for me but….”

“You don’t,” Katie whispered.

“I think it would be best if you moved out,” He admitted honestly.

Katie nodded blankly. She couldn’t believe this was happening. Max rose to his feet then. “I’ll stay with Liz till you find somewhere,” he said before he walked to the bedroom to pack a bag.

see you next week

Four

18 months later

“Are you sure you’ll be alright?” Maria asked Liz again as she handed her small son over to her.

Liz smiled wistfully at the baby before turning her attention back to Maria. “I’ll be fine. Max is coming over later to watch DVD’s,” she explained.

It had been a surprise to everyone when 12 months ago Maria and Michael announced that they were going to have a baby. Michael never seemed like the type of guy who would want children but unlike his own father, he was a great dad.

Michael was adopted by the Evans when he was eleven after Dianne and Phillip discovered that his foster father Hank had been beating him. He spent most of his time at the Evan’s anyway so it hadn’t been a hard transition for anyone when he became a permanent part of their family.

Liz had been surprised but truly happy for her two friends. Although they weren’t married, the baby was a happy surprise for Maria and Michael and Liz didn’t think she had ever seen either of them look so content and happy in their life.

Like Michael, Maria’s childhood hadn’t been easy. Her father had abandoned her and her mother when she was little and Liz knew that Maria had mixed emotions most of her life about being a mother. She didn’t want to be like her mother, always struggling to raise a child, and she certainly didn’t want a father who wasn’t going to stick around. Maria didn’t have anything to worry about with Michael though.

Max had confided in Liz that he believed this was what Michael had always wanted and craved for. Although he loved the Evans family, he didn’t always feel that he belonged with them. Now he had Maria and Adam, his own family and for the first time in his life, he felt like he truly belonged somewhere.

“You and Michael just go out and have fun,” Liz added.

It was Maria and Michael’s anniversary, and they were going out to celebrate which meant that Liz was babysitting her three month old God son, Adam. She didn’t get to baby-sit very often, most of the time Dianne Evans had dibs on it but tonight was Liz’s turn and she was extremely excited.

“Ok well everything you should need is inside,” Maria said. “Thank you for this Liz.”

“You’re welcome,” Liz grinned. “We’re going to have a great time together,” she said looking down at the little boy who was smiling at her with a cheeky grin like his mothers.

After Maria and Michael left Liz took Adam into her apartment and placed him into the playpen Michael had set up with all his toys. She sat on the couch and watched as he played and gurgled for hours, and that what she was doing when Max showed up.

“I’m here,” he announced as he walked through the door his arms full of snacks and DVD’s.

Adam’s little eyes lit up at the sound of a new voice and Liz giggled.

“Look who’s here Adam, its Uncle Max,” Liz said as she picked him up.

“Hey there buddy,” Max grinned taking him from Liz’s arms and giving him a cuddle before lifting his little shirt and blowing a raspberry on his belly.

Liz smiled as she watched Max interact with his nephew. She knew without a doubt that Max would be a wonderful father and she wondered if like her, he would ever get the chance to experience parenthood for himself.

Since his break up with Katie, Max had been single. Sometimes Liz felt incredibly guilty that he was alone because of their friendship but he always insisted it wasn’t her fault that Katie just wasn’t the one for him. Liz wondered if he would ever find the one, she knew she wasn’t having any luck. Apart from a few dates since her break up with Sean, Liz had been single too and she was growing tired.

Liz wanted to have children desperately. Her 30th birthday had already passed and at the end of the year she would be 31. Time was running out for her if she wanted to have children, and with no Mr Right in sight, she was starting to picture a very lonely and empty life.

Max and Liz worked together to bath little Adam and feed him before they placed him in the portable cot set up in Liz’s room.

Liz sat on her bed and watched as he tried to fight sleep but soon he was snoring softly like only babies do.

“He’s so beautiful,” Liz whispered.

“Yeah he looks like Maria,” Max smiled.

Liz felts tears spring to her eyes as she wondered if there would ever be a little person that looked like her.

“I want this so badly,” she confessed.

Max looked down at her and saw the tears in her eyes. He sat down next to her then and wrapped an arm around her.

“Yeah me too,” he said. “We still have time,” he told her. He certainly hadn’t given up hope that there was someone out there for him.

They spent the rest of the night watching DVD’s and when Liz tiptoed into her room hours later, little Adam was still fast asleep.

***

A few days later Liz and Max were having dinner. Liz had been very quiet for the past few days and Max had taken her out to try to cheer her up.

“You ok?” Max asked.

Liz took a deep breath. “Can I ask you something?” She said.

“Of course,” Max nodded.

“You want a family right? Kids and stuff?” She asked.

Max nodded as he studied her face. He had had a feeling that her mood for the past couple of days had been because she was lonely.

“What about if you never meet the right person?” She asked.

“I think I will,” Max said, “I’ve got time,” he added then.

“Yeah that’s true I guess. You’re not racing your biological clock,” she sighed and looked away.

“Liz you’ll meet someone and you’ll have beautiful babies,” He said reaching over and covering her hand with his. Liz had wanted children ever since they were little kids. She used to make them all play house. Max would be the father, Liz the mother and most of the time poor Alex would be stuck playing their baby.

“I don’t think so,” she smiled sadly.

Max didn’t know what to tell her. Liz was a truly amazing person and he knew any man would be lucky to have her, he just wished he could convince her of that.

“Can I ask you something else?” Liz asked then.

“Yeah,” Max nodded.

“Would you consider…” she stopped then her heart beating a mile a minute. She hadn’t been able to get the thought out of her head for days.

“I don’t think I’m ever going to meet the perfect guy for me, Max,” she said. “Maybe I already have and I’ve let him get away,” she shrugged. “But I do know I want to have a baby.”

“Ok,” Max nodded.

“W-Would you consider being the father?” She asked.

Max’s eyes widened with shock. “What do you mean?” He asked.

“You’d make the best father Max,” she whispered, “and you’re my best friend, the only man I know that I would want to share this with.”

“You’re not talking adoption are you?” Max asked.

“No,” Liz shook her head. “I’m been giving this a lot of thought, it’s all I’ve been thinking about for days actually. I want to have a baby and I want you to be the father of it.”

Max sat in his chair staring at Liz in a mixture of shock and astonishment. At first, he didn’t think she was serious but now he realised that she was. Liz literally wanted him to be the biological father of her child.

“I wouldn’t expect you to marry me or anything. You could still date and live your life the way you want to the only difference being that we would share a child. Someone that we could both love….”

Liz could tell he was completely shocked.

“You don’t have to say yes,” she whispered her heart shattering. In her mind, Max was her last option. She didn’t have any other close male friends other than Michael and Alex and she certainly couldn’t ask them to be the father of her child.

“Can I think about it?” Max finally asked.

“Sure,” she nodded.

***

Max sighed as he walked through the large department store. It was his niece’s birthday on the weekend and he had come to buy her a present. Alex and Isabel’s daughter Laura would be 2 but Max’s problem was that he had no idea what two year old girls liked. He knew he should have bought Liz with him but he had been avoiding her for the past few days since she had asked him to have a baby with her.

The truth was Max had no idea what to say to her. Did he want children? Of course he did but did he think it was a good idea to have a child with a woman he wasn’t in love with, or would never be married to? And what would happen if in a couple of years he met someone and he wanted to have children with them?

Max was so caught up in his thoughts that he was startled when he heard someone say his name.

“Max?”

Looking around he recognised the blonde smiling as she walked towards him.

Katie.

She looked good. Her hair was longer and a little darker and her skin glowed. His eyes settled on her stomach then. It was full and round.

“Hi Max,” she said.

This was the first time since their break up that Max had seen her. After they had broken up, she had moved out into an apartment closer to where she worked.

“Hey,” he said and leaned in and hugged her awkwardly.

“How are you?” She asked happily. Despite the way they broke up and how hurt she was for a while after, Katie held no resentment towards Max.

“Good,” Max smiled. “You?”

Katie’s hands rested on her protruding belly, “I’m great.”

“Congratulations,” Max said then.

“Thank you.”

“How far along are you?” He asked.

“Six months,” she smiled. “I’ve met a wonderful guy and I’m really happy. We’re engaged,” she said and showed him her ring.

“I’m really happy for you,” he said.

“Thanks.” Katie nodded.

“So how’s Liz?” She asked. She wondered if the two of them were together yet. It was obvious that what they shared was a lot more than friendship.

“She’s good,” Max nodded.

Katie’s partner approached them then, “Max this is Roger,” she introduced.

“Hey,” he smiled and shook his hands. “Congratulations.”

“Thanks,” Roger grinned.

“It was great seeing you Max,” Katie smiled then. “Say hi to everyone for me.”

“I will,” he nodded and watched as she walked off with her partner.

Max couldn’t deny that he’d felt a little bit of regret when he saw Katie. She looked happy pregnant and he wondered if she would have been that happy having his child. He realised then exactly how Liz was feeling. Seeing something you wanted so badly and it being out of your reach. Max didn’t necessarily want Katie but he realised then he wanted what Liz did. A family of his own.

Just a small note. I never expected people to get so involved in the Max/Liz/Katie thing so I apologise if the shift in this story seems a bit odd but this was the intention of this fic all along.

Liz was surprised when she opened her front door and found Max standing on the other side. She hadn’t seen him in days and she knew he was avoiding her and it hurt. Over the years they had had fights, some lasted a few minutes, others a few hours but they had never gone more than a day being angry at each other. Although they weren’t angry now, in some ways it still felt as though they were fighting.

“Hey,” Max smiled.

“Hey yourself,” Liz replied and moved aside so that she could enter the room.

“How was work?” Max asked when he noticed she was wearing her usual work attire. Green scrubs and a t-shirt. Today the t-shirt was an old one of his that she had stolen from his wardrobe as some point, and he couldn’t help but smile.

“Good,” Liz replied and returned to the kitchen where she was in the middle of making herself a sandwich.

“Want one?” She offered.

Max’s mouth watered at the sight of the club sandwich she was making. Liz was a good cook but he didn’t get to experience it often.

“Sure,” he replied.

Liz slid the plate with the already made sandwich towards him and went about preparing a second one for herself.

Once she was finished, she took a seat across from Max who was studying her carefully.

“How have you been?” He asked.

Liz shrugged and played with a piece of lettuce on her plate to avoid looking at Max.

“Ok, you?” She asked.

“I missed you the past couple of days,” he admitted.

Liz looked up, saw the sincerity on his face, and smiled. “Me too.”

“I just needed some time to think things over.”

Liz nodded, “That’s understandable but it felt like you were closing yourself off to me. It kind of hurt.”

“I’m sorry,” he replied.

Liz smiled at him again and that told Max that he was forgiven.

“So aren’t you curious at all to what decision I came too?” He asked her when it was clear she wasn’t going to bring the subject up.

Liz took a deep breath as she stood up and picked up both of their plates, moving towards the sink.

“I think I got your answer, and I understand,” she said. Liz did truly understand but that didn’t stop her from feeling sad about it. Having children was something she had dreamt about and she felt as though all those dreams were now out of her reach.

Max stood up and approached Liz slowly.

“Why do you assume my answer is no?” He asked.

Liz turned to face him, she was doing her best to smile but Max could tell it was fake.

“I know you Max. You’ve been avoiding me for three days. I got your message.”

“I ran into Katie yesterday,” he blurted out.

Liz’s eyes widened in surprise. “Yeah?”

Liz immediately went on alert. Was he here telling her he was going to get back with Katie?

“She’s pregnant,” he added.

Liz gulped, “Wow she didn’t waste any time.”

Max chuckled. “Yeah that was my first thought but she’s engaged and she seems really happy. She asked about you and said to say hi.”

“She did?” Liz asked shocked. Liz assumed that Katie hated her and blamed her for her break up with Max. It surprised her that she would be interested in how she was.

“Yeah,” Max smiled.

“So are you ok with that?” Liz asked concerned how Max might be feeling.

“Yeah I am,” he said.

He said it with so much confidence that Liz had no trouble believing him and she was glad.

“Ok, well that’s good,” she said.

“It made me realise something though, Liz,” he said then.

“Yeah?”

Reaching out Max grabbed Liz’s hand and pulled her towards the couch. Once she was seated, he took a seat next to her.

“I want a family too,” he told her.

“I know you do,” Liz whispered.

“I want to have a baby with you, Liz,” he said then.

Liz didn’t think she heard him at first, “What did you just say?”

She had been expecting him to let her down gently.

“I want to do this,” Max smiled. “Let’s have a baby.”

“Really?” Liz asked her heart racing.

“Really,” Max replied.

Liz let out a squeal and leaped into Max’s arms. She hugged him tight as tears whirled in her eyes.

“We’re really going to do this; we’re going to have a baby?” Liz asked.

“Yeah,” he said.

“Wow,” Liz blew out.

“I guess the next question is how the hell are we going to do this?” He asked her.

***

The next week Liz started doing some research on their options. There was a lot of information but before all of that Liz realised that they had many decisions to make and things to talk about.

“So what did you find out?” Max asked.

After making the decision and telling Liz, he had found himself getting more excited about the prospect of being a dad.

“There is so much stuff we need to do and to talk about,” Liz blew out.

“Ok so lets make a list of everything and check the items of as we get through them,” Max suggested.

Max was a list type of person. He had a list for everything and if asked he would tell you that was the reason his life was orderly and organised. Liz was definetely not a list person. She was a spur of the moment kind of person.

“Ok,” she agreed.

“First item for the list is what we tell people,” she said.

It hadn’t occurred to her until last night that people looking in from the outside might think that the arrangement Liz and Max were in might be strange. Not to mention, how would a child feel about having parents that were never romantically involved.

“What do you mean?” Max asked.

“Do we tell our family what we’re planning? If I get pregnant what do we tell people we work with, what will tell out baby when they grow up?” She asked feeling slightly overwhelmed.

Max smiled at her. “I think we should look into everything and get organised before we tell anyone at all,” he told her honestly. He knew it would come to a surprise to both of their families but that they would support them.

“As for people at work and the baby lets cross that bridge when we come to it,” he said, “maybe when there is a real baby,” he added with a smile.

“You right I’m sorry,” Liz sighed. “It’s just that there is so much to think about I’m just feeling a little overwhelmed.”

“Are you sure this is what you want?” Max asked her then.

“Definitely,” she said.

“Ok, good,” he smiled. “So tell me what else did you find out?”

“Well I looked into a few things like IVF, we would have to go through counselling and stuff like that,” she informed him.

“But maybe our first stop should be the doctors?” She suggested.

“Ok, why there?” Max asked.

“We should get some tests done to make sure it’s physically possible for us to both conceive a child,” Liz said.

Max nodded, “I don’t think there’s any reason we couldn’t,” Max said.

“I know. We’re both healthy but you never know with these things so I think its best we get the green light before we invest too much emotionally into this,” she told him. “I don’t think I could survive if I started this without doing things properly and found out down the track it wasn’t possible for us.”

Max nodded his understanding. He knew exactly what Liz meant. They were both already emotionally involved in the idea. If things didn’t come off, he knew they would both be upset but if they invested months of hope into it, in the end it would be a lot worse.

“I can get us an appointment together or make you one separately if you’d feel more comfortable,” Liz said.

“Go for it,” Max told her. “Just let me know when so I can schedule it in at work.”

“Ok,” Liz smiled.

“So what’s this stuff about IVF?” Max asked then.

Max had heard bits and pieces about IVF before but he really didn’t have any idea how it worked. Truthfully, he hadn’t given much thought to the whole getting Liz pregnant process and if he was honest with himself, he assumed that they would have done it normally.

“Well we could use invitro fertilisation to get pregnant,” Liz said. “You put your sperm into a cup and they use that to fertilise my egg.”

“Oh,” Max said. It sounded very technical.

“It’s that easy?” He asked.

“No not really,” Liz frowned. “It’s expensive and you have to jump through some hoops to get into the program. But the doctor should know more about that and tell us what we need to know to be prepared.”

“Ok,” he nodded. He decided to hold off on talking to Liz about the details of her getting pregnant until he had all the information. He knew it sounded cave man to want to plant the seed that conceived his baby, inside Liz himself.

“So what do we do now?” He asked.

“I make an appointment,” Liz smiled.

“Right,” Max nodded. It wasn’t that simple was it?

“Morning Max, Liz,” Doctor William Gray smiled as he entered the office.

Max and Liz had been waiting for ten minutes for the results of their tests. It had taken Liz three weeks to get an appointment with the Doctor who was considered on of the best in his field. He specialise in IVF and would be able to help them with the steps they had ahead of them.

“Morning Doctor,” they both replied.

He opens the file in front of him and then nods.

“Ok so the two of you have both had a full medical,” he says.

“Yes,” Liz answers for them.

The first thing the nurses did when Liz had made the appointment was book them in for a full medical. That included a urine and sperm sample for Max, and a urine and pelvic exam for Liz.

“Ok the results are back.” He says without looking up, instead finishing with one file and picking up the other.

After a few minutes of awkward and nervous silence, he places the file down and looks up with a smile.

“Good news,” he says. “You’re both perfectly healthy and you’ll have no trouble conceiving.”

“Really?” Liz asks happily.

“Really,” he replies.

Next to Liz, Max breaths a sigh of relief too.

“So why are you here?” He asked bluntly.

Liz looked at Max and he looked back at her.

“How long have you been trying? How often?” He asked.

“Um actually,” Liz started, “Max and I haven’t actually tried.”

Immediately William Gray looked confused.

“You see we’re not together, together,” Liz tried to explain feeling embarrassed. “But we want to have a baby together.”

When the expression on Gray’s face didn’t change Liz added, “We’re best friends.”

“Are you gay?” He asked bluntly causing Max to almost choke on his own saliva.

“No,” he quickly assured the Doctor.

“No neither of us are gay,” Liz said a little annoyed.

After a few more seconds of silence, he began talking.

“There are a lot of steps involved in IVF,” he said carefully. “Normally we would give you an injection of hormones to stimulate your ovaries but I’m reluctant to do that Liz because there is nothing wrong with you,” he replied.

“I realise that,” Liz said. “We really only want the help with fertilising my egg with Max’s sperm.”

Max could hear that Liz was getting frustrated and he reached out and took her hand. He wished then that they had talked about this before the appointment.

“Is there any reason that the two of you can’t do this naturally?” The doctor asked bluntly.

Liz stuttered, “N-No I guess there isn’t.”

“I’m not trying to be rude Ms Parker but I don’t normally have healthy young couples come into my room and want help having babies. Normally it’s women who have been trying for years unsuccessfully to have children.”

“I realise that,” Liz whispered feeling stupid.

He studied Liz for a few seconds then.

“Let me give you some information,” he said standing up and reaching for some pamphlets. “Have a read through this and think about it seriously. I’ve also included some information on the right time of your cycle to try and conceive.”

“Does that mean you won’t help us?” Liz asked.

Max could already hear the dejection in her voice.

“No,” he shook his head. “I just think you should pursue natural options first,” he said.

Liz was quiet the whole way out of the office and once in Max’s car in the car pack she started to cry.

“Shh don’t cry,” Max whispered reaching over and placing his arms around her.

“What are we going to do now?” She sobbed.

Max took a deep breath and settled back into his seat.

“Let’s go home and talk about this over lunch?” He suggested.

Liz nodded and a few seconds later, they were on the road towards their apartment.

***

By the time they had reached the apartment Liz had clamed down considerably.

“Let’s go to my apartment I have some left over chicken,” Max suggested.

Once inside Max sat out some food but Liz made no move to touch any of the food.

Realising food would have to wait until after Max took a deep breath and prepared himself.

“Just because Doctor Gray won’t help us doesn’t mean that we can’t still have a baby,” Max said quietly.

“You think we should find another doctor?” Liz asked surprised.

Max shook his head hesitantly. “No I don’t. I didn’t like the sound of you having hormones inserted into you body when you don’t need them. I’ve heard that kind of thing can cause cancer,” Max said.

“Than what do you suggest?” Liz asked confused.

Personally, the idea of injections didn’t appeal to her either but she was willing to have them if it meant that she would be a mother.

“I think we should doitthenormalway,” Max mumbled, lowering his head and to avoid embarrassment.

“What?” Liz asked.

Max sighed, “We should try things the normal way,” Max replied slower.

Liz’s eyes went wide.

“You think we should have sex?” She whispered, shocked.

Slowly Max nodded. He watched Liz carefully worried about her reaction.

Instead, she cocked her head to the side and studied Max. Her eyes travelled his strong torso and venture lower towards Max’s lap. Max blushed bright red. He knew she couldn’t see anything but he shifted in his seat anyway, all of a sudden feeling a little uncomfortable.

“Ok,” she answered finally, and as far as Max was concerned way to casually considering what they were actually talking about.

“Ok?” Max questioned.

Liz smiled, “Yeah, ok.”

“So let me get this straight. You have no problem having sex with me?” Max quirked an eyebrow at her.

Liz giggled then. “It’s not like we’re just having sex for the hell of having it. We’re making a baby,” she shrugged.

“I’m just confused, if you had no problem with doing it this way to begin with then why did we go through with the doctors appointments?” Max asked.

“I didn’t think you’d want to do it the normal way,” Liz replied.

Max frowned. “Why not?”

“Well sex is a big thing. I mean we’ve never had sex,” Liz replied hesitantly.

“No we haven’t,” Max acknowledged. “We’ve never even kissed,” he pointed out.

“Exactly,” Liz smiled. “Because we don’t have those types of feelings for each other. I wasn’t sure if it would be possible to do it naturally.”

“Why the hell not?”

“Well because you have to have certain equipment working to have sex, and in order for that to happen you have to be attracted to the person your planning on having sex with…” Liz began to ramble.

“Wait a second,” Max interrupted with wide eyes.

“You thought I’d have a problem getting it up?” He asked outraged.

“Oh God,” Liz cursed. This was exactly why they had never had a conversation about having sex before.

“No I didn’t mean that!” She replied. “I’m sure your equipment works fine…”

“It does,” Max assured her quickly.

“I simply meant that it might have been difficult because there is no attraction between us.”

Liz was continuing to shock Max today. Sure, he didn’t really think of Liz as anything more than a friend, and never had apart from that few weeks in college when he had felt a pull to her, but he certainly wasn’t turned off by her.

“Liz just because we’re not in love, or lust with each other doesn’t mean that I don’t find you attractive. Hell your fucking gorgeous, hotter than most of the girls I’ve dated over the years,” Max told her.

Liz blushed. “Thank you. You’re not too bad either,” she admitted.

Max chuckled. “You’re so dead Parker.”

“What? Why?” Liz asked.

“Because I’m a stud in the bedroom,” he teased, “One romp with me and I’ll ruin you for life.”

At this comment, Liz burst into a fit of laughter.

When she calmed down Max was grinning at her.

“So should we schedule some sex?” Liz asked a hint of teasing in her voice.

“You might need to call my secretary?” Max replied.

“Oh so half an hour then?” Liz asked with a smirk. “10 minutes here, it should only take you 5 minutes and that will give you 5 minutes to recover before the 10 minute drive back”

Max was out of his seat as quick as lightning and with a squeal Liz fled from her seat and ran knowing that he was coming after her and that he would ticker her mercifully for her teasing.

It didn’t take long for Max to catch her.

Liz ran towards the lounge using it as a barrier between her and Max but after chasing her around it a few times Max launched himself over it tackling them both onto the soft cushions.

“You think you’re funny?” He asked as he tickled her sides.

Launching Liz nodded. “Yep.”

“Take it back,” Max said tickling her harder.

“Ok, OK!” Liz cried out.

Max smiled in triumph from above Liz. He was a little startled when he looked down at her flushed face to find her staring back at him.

Slowly, he began to lower his head.

At the same time, Liz began to raise hers to meet his.

The first touch of their lips was soft and tentative but as soon as Liz opened her mouth and Max’s tongue slid inside her mouth stars exploded behind Liz’s eyes.

The kiss was short but passionate.

“Um wow,” Liz breathed out.

“Yeah,” Max whispered.

“Maybe we should get started…,” she suggested hesitantly.

With a nod, Max agreed and soon his mouth was once again attacking Liz’s eager one.

“Is this ok?” Max whispered as he settled his naked body between Liz’s thighs.

“Yeah,” Liz smiled.

After the kiss they had somehow made it to Max’s bedroom, both loosing most of their clothes during the trip.

Now they were laying on the bed, both naked, getting ready to take a major step in their relationship.

Liz was surprised that she felt so comfortable in front of Max naked. As soon as her body had been revealed to her, Max had murmured reverently that she was beautiful causing a tear to come to her eyes. No one had ever said that to her in such a beautiful way before, in a way that made her actually believe it was true. Maybe it was because she trusted Max so completely.

Tentatively Max cupped one of Liz’s breast and caressed it gently. It fit into his hand perfectly.

He ran his hand over the rosy nipples and Liz moaned.

“Does this feel weird?” Max wondered as he kissed his way up her neck to her ear.

“Right now the only thing it feels is really good,” she admitted squirming a little which caused Max’s hardness to brush against her slick folds.

Max immediately groaned at the contact.

“You’re right,” he agreed as he swooped down and took a nipple into his mouth.

The foreplay wasn’t necessary. Liz knew she was already wet and ready for Max. It had been very easy for him to excite her. He knew her so well. But the feel of his mouth over her breasts was so good she couldn’t bring herself to pull himself away.

In the end, she didn’t need to. Unable to wait a second longer Max pulled his head back and reached between them to line his cock up with her opening.

“You ready?” He asked as he rubbed himself against her gently.

“Yes,” Liz moaned.

Max slid inside quickly. Liz was so slick and tight.

He pumped in and out of her slowly. In his mind, he knew it wasn’t right that nothing had ever felt as good as being inside of Liz did at that very second. This was Liz, his best friend since childhood. But he pushed those thoughts aside and concentrated on his thrust.

“Yes Max,” Liz moaned.

She wrapped her legs around his hips and thrust against him.

Max felt so good and with every thrust, he filled her up.

“Are you close?” Max panted as he felt his orgasm approaching.

Liz nodded.

Max reached between them then and rubbed her clit.

With a few final thrusts, Max jerked once, and then twice as he blew his seed deep inside Liz’s body and seconds later Liz thrust her head back and cried out as her own rocked her body.

Exhausted, Max collapsed on Liz’s limp body. It was few seconds before he had the energy to roll to the side.

“You ok?” He asked Liz when he got his breath back.

Liz turned her head and smiled. “Uh huh,” she grinned.

Feeling a smug and proud Max also grinned. Liz looked completely satisfied and he was proud of that fact.

“How often do you think we’ll have to do this?” Max finally asked.

“I’m not sure,” Liz replied as she sat up. Not worried at all about baring her naked body to Max.

“I doubt I’ll fall pregnant the first time,” she added then.

“So we should follow up then?” Max suggested.

Liz bit her bottom lip, “Yeah.”

“We should read that pamphlet,” Max said then. “Didn’t the doctor say something about the best times to try?”

“Yep,” Liz nodded.

“We might as well be efficient,” Max grinned then as he stood up.

“You’re right,” Liz agreed.

Liz watched then as Max began to pick up their discarded clothing, going out into the lounge room to retrieve all of it before walking back in.

“Do you have to go back to work?” She asked then.

Max sighed and nodded. “If not I’ll just have twice as much work to do tomorrow.”

“I’m on night shift,” she informed him then.

Max nodded, “Make me a copy of your schedule so I know where you are?” He asked then.

Liz smiled as she reached for her bra and panties. “Sure.”

***

The next day

“Oh God Max don’t stop,” Liz cried as he plunged in and out of her.

“I’m coming,” he grunted.

“Yes, Yes,” Liz cried out.

Liz’s walls fluttered around Max’s cock as her orgasm over took her.

“MAX!” She cried in ecstasy.

“Ahh…” Max cried out as his own orgasm ripped through him and he came.

Their foreheads against each other Liz and Max panted.

“Um that was unexpected,” Liz whispered.

Max chuckled.

He had headed to Liz’s apartment that night and had cooked dinner for her. Liz had walked into the apartment in her scrubs and t-shirt and before Max could even serve dinner, they were going at it on Liz’s kitchen table.

“Sorry,” Max apologised.

He wasn’t sure what had come over him but he had just seen her and a picture of her naked and in the throes of passion appeared in his mind and he had to have her.

Inside Liz’s felt butterflies in her stomach and she cursed them.

“It’s ok.” She told him. “Besides I haven’t had sex in close to 2 years now, I’m not going to complain about twice in two days,” she teased.

Max smiled as he stepped back and put himself back inside of his jeans.

He understood what Liz meant. He had broken up with Katie 18 months ago and apart from a few one night stands, he had been high and dry for that long too.

“I know what you mean.”

Liz giggled then. “God this is so strange.”

Max looked up surprised. He didn’t think it felt strange at all.

“I mean we hardly ever talk about sex,” Liz said. “Even in high school we just didn’t go there and here we are talking about sex with each other,” she said.

Max smiled then too. Liz was right. For some reason they had always talked about everything but sex had always been off limits.

“You’re right,” he agreed.

“So I read the pamphlet last night,” Liz said then as she also got up off the table and fixed herself up before she took a seat.

“Yeah?” Max asked as he began to put the food he prepared onto plates.

“I did some research on the net too,” she added. “It was a slow night.”

“What did you find out?” Max asked curiously as placed a plate of pasta in front of her.

“Basically you work out your cycle and then from there we can we can find my most fertile times, it says in those times we should have sex as much as possible. It also suggests taking your temp so you’ll now when you’re ovulating.”

Max’s eyes went wide. It sounded so technical.

Liz grinned. “Don’t worry I’ll take care of that part.”

“Um good,” Max smiled sheepishly.

They sat and ate in slice for a while then.

“Maybe you should stay here for a while,” Liz suggested unexpectedly.

“Convenience,” she shrugged when Max looked at her surprised.

“I only live down the hall Lizzie, you know if you feel the urge for a booty call,” Max teased.

Liz reached across and whacked him.

“Fine,” she said.

“It’s cool. I’m happy to sleep here,” Max said then with a shrug. It beat going home to an empty apartment most nights.

“Cool,” Liz said with a small smile.

“I might just leave my stuff at home though because I think it would be a bit hard to explain to our friends and family why I was living with you.”

“Yeah that’s true,” Liz nodded. “We should make sure we lock the door when we’re here to because you know what Maria’s like,” Liz added as an after thought.

Max agreed. The last thing they needed was for Maria to walk in on them.

“Our families are going to freak when they find out,” Max sighed then.

“You think?” Liz asked.

“Of course. I mean I’m sure they’ll support us but at first everyone is going to think we’re crazy,” Max replied.

“Do you think we are?” Liz asked curiously.

Max smiled, “Sometimes but then I think about being a father and having a little girl running around that looks like you and calls me daddy and I get so excited.”

Liz grinned then, “I want a little boy that looks like you,” Liz told him. “He’ll look just like you did when we were little, hopefully with my ears though.”

“Hey!” Max objected and threw a napkin at Liz.

“I’m just kidding. I think your ears are cute,” Liz told him.

Max rubbed his ears self-consciously.

“Look Max,” Liz said her tone serious. “As long as we’re both sure about this then it doesn’t matter what our families say. Besides they just want us to be happy so once they realise that this is what we want and will make us happy I’m sure they’ll support us.”

Both there families had always been supportive and wonderful and Liz didn’t have any reason to think they wouldn’t now.

“I hope you right,” he smiled.

“Lets cross that bridge when we get to it,” Liz said reminding Max of something similar he said to her recently.

“You’re right.” Max nodded. “You’re right.”

“I think that this is our only option James,” Max explained to his client who was sitting across from him. What was it with these rich men who wanted to divorce their wives who they had been with before they made their money? They never wanted to part with a cent and didn’t think there should be a problem with the fact that they were fucking their secretary and that their wife had found out.

“Fine,” he sighed.

Max was about to inform him he would make an appointment to talk to his wife’s lawyer when his phone beeped.

He looked at it annoyed. His secretary knew better than to interrupt him during an appointment.

“Excuse me,” he said to James and picked up the phone.

“What is it Sarah?” He snapped.

“I’m sorry to bother you Mr Evans but Liz is on the phone and she says it’s urgent.”

Max frowned. “Put her through,” he said.

“Liz?” He questioned as he turned his seat to try to get a bit of privacy.

“Max it’s time, I’m ovulating,” Liz informed him.

Max’s eyes went wide. “You rang me to tell me that?” He whispered annoyed. “I’m in a meeting Liz,” he added.

“I’m sorry but you need to come home as quickly as possible,” she replied. “This is the best time to try to make a baby,” she added.

“Give me a half an hour,” he sighed.

“Ok, but hurry,” she added.

Max put the phone down gently and smiled at James Cummings. “Sorry about that,” he apologised again.

“Wife?” James smirked.

“Um no,” Max replied with a small smile.

“Ok, as I was saying I’ll set up an appointment and go through the offer with your wife and her lawyer. I don’t see a need for you to be at that meeting,” he added. “If they agree I’ll draw up the papers.”

James Cummings sighed. “Good the sooner this is over the better.”

Max saw James out then and approached Sarah.

“When is my next appointment?” He asked.

“Not until 2,” Sarah advised.

“Great I’ll be out of the office for a while but you should be able to reach me on my cell if you need me,” he informed her.

Sarah nodded professionally but secretly she was wondering where her boss rushed off to all the time.

A couple of times over the past few weeks he had run off after a call from Liz, or to Liz.

***

Max was already undoing his tie as he barged into Liz’s apartment.

“I’m here,” he called out.

“I’m in the bedroom,” Liz called back.

Max kicked off his shoes as he rushed towards the bedroom. He had never dreamed that making a baby could be so tiring.

Liz was already waiting for him on the bed, naked, with only a sheet covering her and Max gulped. Was it right to find your best friend so fucking attractive? He wondered.

Liz got to her knees and immediately moved to help Max out of his clothes.

“I wish you would have ovulated at a more convenient time,” Max grunted as he pushed his pants and boxers down his legs.

Liz giggled. “I’m sorry. I promise I’ll have a word with my uterus for you.”

Max grinned as he pushed Liz’s body onto the bed with his own, wasting no time kissing her.

Reaching between them Liz stroked Max’s cock. Delighted that it was already hard.

So far, sex had been nothing but smooth sailing between them. Liz had worried at first that it would be awkward afterwards but so far they had been able to fall into their old ways easily, and no one suspected that anything had changed between them.

Sure, their friends hassled them about dating but that was the last thing on Liz’s mind at the moment and she doubted Max had time to think about dating either.

Secretly she was glad. They hadn’t talked about what would happen when she got pregnant. Would they date other people and tell them about their situation.

Max entered Liz in one smooth thrust and she moaned out loudly before wrapping her legs around his waist.

Max strokes were hard and fast. They both worked together and their moans and cries filled the small bedroom of Liz’s apartment. Their slick bodies glided against each other as their hands explored each other.

As Liz felt her orgasm approaching her back arched off the bed, as her toes dug into Max’s ass.

“Yes Max… ahh MAX!” she cried out.

He walls contracted around Max and with a final jerk he allowed his own orgasm to wash over him and blew his seed deep inside of Liz.

“I hope your neighbour isn’t home through the day,” he joked when he rolled off Liz a few seconds later.

Liz lifted her legs up and held onto them with her hands in an effort to keep Max’s seed deep inside of her for as long as possible. She read somewhere that it helped sometimes.

“It’s vacant at the moment,” she panted stilling trying to get her breath back. “Someone has been in and out painting so I guess someone will move in sooner or later.”

Liz’s last neighbour had been a man in his 40’s who had gotten divorced. Unfortunately, the apartment wasn’t big enough when his kids visited and in the end, he had to move out.

Max turned on his side and reach over to stroke Liz’s cheek before moving some mattered hair from her forehead.

“You ok?” He asked.

Liz grinned. “Uh huh.”

Max lay with her for a few more minutes before she final let her legs go.

“You got time for lunch?” She asked.

“With you?” He smiled. “Always,” he added then before leaning over and kissing her cheek.

Liz prepared sandwiches while Max had a shower and when he emerged wearing only his boxers they sat down at her small dinning table.

“Did I interrupt an important meeting?” She asked when he sat down.

Max grinned as he took a bite of the sandwich. “It was pretty much over,” he assured her.

“But you scared me when Sarah said it was an emergency,” he pointed out.

“Sorry,” Liz replied sheepishly. “But there was no way she was going to put me through unless I said that,” she pointed out.

“I know, next time though just tell her it’s important and I’ll let her know to come and tell me as soon as my meeting is over. It’s not like I can walk out on a meeting anyway, Liz,” he said sensibly.

“You’re right,” she sighed. “I got a little excited I think,” she said then.

“That’s understandable,” he said.

“So when do you think we’ll know if any of this will work?” He asked.

Liz through about it before answering. “Another week or so,” she said.

Max nodded. He knew they would be very lucky if Liz was to fall during their first month of trying but it would be wonderful if she did. Everywhere Max went now he saw babies, or baby stuff and he just got more and more excited.

On the weekend he had seen his niece and nephew and it only proved to him how much he wanted one of his very own. He never dreamed he would be doing something like this with Liz, but then when he thought about it, who better to do it with than your best friend? Their child would never have to worry about mummy and daddy falling out of love and fighting all the time. They would always have two parents who loved them and was there for them.

“Have you thought about what you’ll do about work when you fall?” Max asked then.

Sometimes Liz’s job could be very tiring and physical and he doubted that she would be able to work full term.

“I have leave and savings,” she advised.

“I know, and obviously I would help support you,” Max pointed out. “What I meant was what would happen to your job?” He asked.

Liz was head of radiology. She worked hard to get to that position.

“I’ll take maternity leave and they’ll find someone to replace me during that time. I can come back when I’m ready,” she shrugged.

“So you won’t loose your job?” He asked.

“Nope,” she smiled happily. She had already looked into her entitlements and it turned out that working for a government department had its advantages. Sure, they didn’t pay as well as private hospitals but she had job security and that’s what was important when you were single and paying off a mortgage.

After finishing lunch, Max finished getting dressed and returned to the kitchen. He kissed Liz’s cheek.

“See you tonight,” he told her.

“Yep,” she agreed. She’d worked 5 days straight and she had a couple of days off ahead of her.

“Let’s go out,” Max suggested then.

“That’s sounds nice,” she smiled. “Where?”

“You pick,” he smiled. “Get all dolled up for me,” he added then.

When Liz saw his smile, she felt her heart melt. Why hadn’t she noticed before how sexy and sweet that smile of his was? No wonder woman always fell over themselves when he was around.

“Ok,” she agreed.

Liz felt her heart skip a beat at the thought of a night out with Max and as soon as he left she headed towards her cupboard to find a dress for their night out.

***

“Evans,” Max turned as he walked back into his boss.

“Hey Dave,” he greeted his boss.

“Do you have a minute?” Dave asked.

Dave Harrison was one of those types of men that you loved working for. He was a family man and if you worked for him he considered you part of his family. Harrison Legal was only a small firm but they did very well thanks to Max and a few other senior lawyers.

“I just hired a new lawyer,” he told Max as they sat down in his office.

“Really?” Max asked surprised.

“Yes,” he nodded.

“I didn’t realise we were expanding,” Max said.

“I’m taking on a partner,” he replied.

Max was at a loss for words. How had he not known anything about this? He had worked for Dave for years and he was the most senior person there.

“That’s great. Congratulations,” he said politely, but deep down he was disappointed. He had been waiting for the day that Dave took on a partner in hopes it would be him.

“So I needed someone to take your place,” he added casually.

Max’s eyes widened. “Excuse me?”

Dave Harrison smiled. “How do you feel about being my partner Max?” he asked. “I thought Harrison & Evans Legal had a nice ring to it?”

Max was completely shocked and it was obvious to Dave.

“Thank you,” he finally said.

Dave shrugged. “No thank you,” he said. “I’m getting old Max,” he told him, “and you’re just the guy I want running this place and leading it into the future.”

Dave stood up then and Max quickly followed.

“Congratulations Max,” he said and held out his hand.

Max shook it eagerly. “We’ll discuss the details later.” He told him.

Max was still shocked and sunk into his seat when Dave left. It only took a few minute for him to snap out of it and pick up the phone. He truly had a reason to go out and celebrate tonight with Liz.

Nine

“I’m so proud of you,” Liz smiled at Max from across the table.

When Max had arrived at her apartment with a grin that reminded her of a cat that ate the canary she knew that something had happened.

When he had told her about his conversation with Dave Harrison Liz had squealed in delight before jumping into his arms. She knew that this was Max’s dream; it was the closest thing to him as having his own firm was.

“Me too,” Max smiled. “I still can’t believe it actually,” he added then. “Harrison & Evans Legal,” he grinned

“It has a very nice ring to it,” Liz agreed.

“I’m just worried about the timing of everything,” he frowned then.

After the shock had worn off and Max had gotten time to sit down and think about his promotion he realised the work ahead of him. First, he would have to train the new lawyer and brief them on some of the cases that he was doing, that would now be their responsibility. At the same time he would have to learn all about some of the bigger clients cases.

“Why?” Liz asked.

“Well this promotion is going to mean long hours for a while,” he said. “I’m worried how that will affect our plan to have a baby, I’m not going to be around as much as I would like to.”

Liz smiled at Max. It was amazing that a man who was so sensitive and considerate hadn’t already been snapped up. Max was everything a girl could want so it still baffled her how he hadn’t found the perfect woman yet. Sometimes she wondered if it was because of her. She knew from experience that a lot of woman Max dated and men that she dated had a problem with their extremely close relationship. Liz didn’t really remember anymore how it had happened but it felt like the most natural thing in the world to her. Liz had always based her search for the perfect man on Max because he possessed all the characteristics that she loved.

“It will be fine, besides it could take months for me to get pregnant,” Liz pointed out.

“I know it’s just that I don’t want you to think I’m not committed to it because I am,” he assured her.

Liz’s smile widened and she reached across the table for Max’s hand. “I know that’s why I knew you were the perfect man to be the father of my children,” she told him.

“So do you know who Dave hired to replace you yet?” Liz wondered. Liz was familiar with most of the people Max had worked with since she had attended Christmas parties and functions with him over the years he had worked there.

“No clue, he said he had someone so I guess I’ll meet them when they start,” Max shrugged unworried about it.

“I’m sure it will be fine,” Liz told him.

“Yep, but enough about work,” he said, “Lets just enjoy the night together.”

After that, Max and Liz spent the rest of the night talking about everything they could think of, from their friends and family to their hopes for the future. It was amazing the things they learnt about each other considering how long they had been friends but it was in that moment that Liz realised that Max would probably never stop amazing her.

***

“So Liz what’s new with you?” Isabel asked as the three girls sat around a table over coffee.

Liz, Maria and Isabel got together weekly for coffee, dinner or just a catch up.

Liz shrugged, “Not much, just work,” she said.

Isabel eyed her friend of many years. There was something different about her, a sparkle in her eye that she didn’t remember seeing before.

“Been on any dates lately?” Maria asked curiously

These days with a baby and Michael, Maria’s life was very tame so she believed that she had to live her life vicariously through Liz at times.

Liz sighed. “Nope, no dates,” she told them.

“What about you guys?” Liz asked quickly trying to change the subject because she knew where Maria was going to go next.

“No dates? How come?” Maria asked ignoring Liz.

“For the same reason as last week Maria,” Liz laughed, “I haven’t met anyone worth dating.”

“You sound like Max,” Isabel said. “He says the same thing every time I give him a hard time. You guys aren’t getting any younger you know,” Isabel pointed out.

“Thank you Isabel,” Liz frowned.

“It would be so much easier if you and Max just got together.”

“What!” Liz asked shocked. Certainly she hadn’t heard Maria right because if she did it would mean her best friend was suggesting that her and Max should be a couple.

“Why would you say something like that?” She asked.

Maria shrugged. “I’ve always thought that the two of you were perfect for each other,” she admitted, “I just never said anything because I figured you’d realise it yourself one day.”

Liz looked at Isabel then who was watching the conversation unravel with interest, “Do you think the same thing?” She asked.

Isabel hesitated for a second, “I think that the two of you could be really good together.”

“We are good together, as BEST FRIENDS,” Liz reminded them.

The argument was stupid considering the fact that they were trying to have a baby together but Isabel and Maria didn’t know that and Liz had no intention of telling them.

Liz couldn’t believe that her friends all thought her and Max would get together eventually or that they should.

But didn’t Liz think that at one point? Sure, she had thought about it high school when she had a bit of a crush on Max but that had been all it was, right.

Liz knew she wasn’t harbouring secret feelings for Max. She loved him, he knew that but she wasn’t romantically in love with him.

“We know that,” Maria spoke up, “but have you ever considered how good you could be together romantically?” Maria asked.

Maria had wanted to have this conversation with Liz a million times but had always stopped herself knowing that this was exactly how Liz would react.

“I mean you guys have so much in common, not to mention the fact that you see each other every day, live in the same apartment building and still never fight,” she pointed out.

“Oh, but when you do there is just so much passion there,” Isabel chimed in.

Liz shook her head, “I can’t believe that you two are talking about this,” she said.

“Can you honestly say you’ve never thought about it?” Maria asked.

Liz frowned, “Maybe once in high school for maybe a millisecond,” Liz admitted.

“Max had the hots for you in uni,” Isabel smiled.

“I know,” Liz told her wanting to wipe the smug smile of her face.

“It was a crush; it was bound to happen with all the time we spend together.”

“So you don’t think you could ever feel that way for Max?” Maria asked bluntly.

Now that she had gotten to talk to Liz about Max, there was no way she was going to let up before she found out everything she wanted to know. This was a hot topic. Michael had told her countless times that she was a busy body and she should stay out of other peoples business but what if Liz and Max just needed that push from a friend to make them see what was right in front of them. If that was the case, she would never forgive herself if she hadn’t said anything.

“Max and I have been best friends for 20 years, you don’t just start dating someone after that sort of time, it would be weird,” Liz said.

“Right,” Isabel said, but she didn’t’ buy it for a second and Liz knew it.

***

When Liz arrived home after her gruelling questioning over coffee she found Max in her apartment.

“Hey,” he smiled when she entered.

“Hey,” Liz replied tiredly and flopped on to the couch next to him.

Max immediately wrapped an arm around her shoulder and Liz leaned her head down.

“How was coffee?” He asked.

Liz groaned.

“That good?” Max asked curiously.

“I got double teamed by Maria and Isabel,” she replied.

“What about?” Max asked curiously. He knew exactly how bad his sister and sister in law could be so he was surprised Liz made it home alive.

“You actually,” Liz told him.

‘Me?” Max asked surprised.

“Yep. Apparently our friends believe we’re perfect for each other,” she grinned at him.

Liz couldn’t wait for Max’s reaction.

“What?” He asked.

“Maria told me she thought we were perfect for each other and Isabel agreed.”

Max sat in his seat shocked as he watched Liz.

“So you want to have babies with me, Max?” She teased.

Max’s look of shock quickly turned to a wide grin and before Liz could react, he pounced on her.

“Yep and I think we should get started on that right away,” he whispered as he nuzzled her neck.

It escaped both their notice how easily they slipped from best friends to lovers.

Max pulled Liz onto his lap and fused their mouths together. His tongued licked the seam of Liz’s lips begging for entrance and she quickly opened in invitation. Liz’s small hands quickly began pulling Max’s t-shirt up so she could caress his flawless six-pack.

Max groaned as Liz’s hands explored his chest and stomach and soon his own hands were working at the small buttons of Liz’s flimsy blouse until he had it open and could cup her breasts over her black lacy bra.

He trailed kisses from her mouth and down her neck stopping to suck on her pulse point, something he had learned that drove her crazy.

Pulling back Liz whipped Max’s shirt off his body before pushing her blouse off. Max struggled with the clasp of her bra while her hands busily unzipped and unbuttoned his jeans.

“Up,” Max grunted as she attempted to tug on his jeans.

Liz quickly jumped to her feet and they both quickly kicked off their remaining clothes before they fell back onto the lounge.

Liz wasted no time grasping Max’s cock and stroking it while Max’s hands slipped between Liz’s thighs and caressed her heat. His finger slid inside of her and he pumped in and out to the same rhythm Liz was stroking him.

“Now Max,” Liz moaned as she bucked against Max’s hand.

Max led his cock to her opening and rubbed himself against her a few times before sliding inside of her.

“Yes,” Liz moaned.

“Liz,” Max hissed.

Liz rose on to her knees and slid up and down Max’s cock slowly at first enjoying the feel of his length inside of her.

Max arched his head back against the couch as Liz tortured him by taking him in and out of her tight pussy over and over again.

Soon though it wasn’t enough for Liz and she began bucking against Max harder.

“Help me Max,” she panted.

Max’s hands grasped her hips and he pounded Liz down on his cock as he raised his hips to meet every thrust.

Liz cried out at how hard and deep he was penetrating her. “God Max, don’t stop,” she cried.

Max grinned as he watched through hooded eyes as Liz’s breasts bounced uncontrollably in his face as she rode him with abandon. She looked so sexy and he couldn’t resists leaning up and taking a rosy nipple into his mouth.

“Yes Max…ah yes,” Liz cried out, her walls contracting around Max’s girth.

Max thrust into Liz a few more times before his own orgasm ripped through him and he came inside Liz with an animalistic cry.

Exhausted, Liz slumped against Max’s body, a smile on her face that told of her satisfaction.

“You ok?” Max asked when she didn’t’ speak up, leaving a kiss on her forehead as he wiped her sweaty hair away from her face. He was aware that he was still buried deep inside of her but he was in no hurry to move.

Liz grinned lazily at Max and nodded. “Is it wrong that I enjoy this so much?” She asked.

Max chuckled at her, “Would you feel better if I told you I enjoy it a lot too?” He asked.

“Yes,” Liz said.

“Just remember this conversation when you’re pregnant and blame me for all the weight you’re going to put on,” he teased.

Liz’s smile grew brighter at the mention of being pregnant and she snuggled closer. “Ok,” she assured him.

Seeing that Liz was content where she was for the time being Max kissed her cheek again before laying his head back against the couch and rested his eyes too.
