My mother is Puerto Rican so we grew up speaking Spanish and English. My father is Native American, so I understand Lakota, but because it's not really the side of my family I grew up around, and because my father (who is trilingual) spoke mostly Spanish or English, I'm not as fluent in it. Thus I speak two and a half languages.

Well, a fellow Puerto Rican on the board. Nice to meet ya. :)

I have to say, I now know what you mean. When I was growing up, my parents didn't speak Spanish to me as often (English was predominate in the house), but when I went to visit my grandparents, they would speak both Spanish and English. I really didn't pick up on it until later and I'm still at a loss sometimes. I can read and write it and get away with having a minimal conversation.

It's the reason why when I have kids, I'm going to make sure I live close enough to visit my mom and have her converse with my kids only in Spanish. My brother has two kids and I find myself speaking to them in Spanish and my brother just looks at me like I've lost my mind. I think he thinks it's a hindrance, but it shouldn't be. It should be an advantage for them.

Well they say it's easier to pick up languages when you're young. Because it comes more naturally for my wife to speak English, we hardly ever speak Spanish when it's just us. Therefore, my mother insists that we only speak Spanish when we take our son to visit my family, so he'll get a large dose of both languages. Maybe next time we visit them I'll suggest that my dad only speak Lakota. lol

Ellie I love you even more!!! I like how Puerto Rican spanish is different than Mexican spanish! I know how to read, write, and speak spanish. It is quite fun. People never guess I can speak spanish and it is funny when people are talking about me in spanish and I laugh and say ' do you kiss your mom with that mouth' in spanish of course! LOL!

I love the things I learn about other people from this thread.

You totally should! What an interesting language to understand. My language comprehension is significantly more boring than that. I speak English and French and understand German. I can converse in Sign, but it's pretty rough going when I do.

Ellie - I agree with you. I think being bilingual could only aid your future kids. My cousin's son is in a Japanese immersion school, so he speaks both English and Japanese, to honor both his parents. (His mom is Japanese.)

Vanessa - What are your 2 1/2 languages?

I can sign but I can't barley understand it despite the 3 years I took in high school. Could that be considered knowing half the language?
