Chapter One

Brrrring! The bell sounded, marking the end of the school day.

“Urgh, I’m so glad that’s over. English class has really started to be a drag nowadays.” Maria said rolling her eyes and walking with Liz towards the door, “I mean those essays we have to write- analysis of the different types of languages in the US; consequences of drugs; why today’s teens are walking backwards! What the hell does that even mean? Backwards? I’m walking very forwards by the way! I even have a plan for university. Almost.”

“It totally sucks.” Liz agreed, half-listening to Maria’s rant. “Where is Max?”

“I mean, at least we have stuff to do today! Yay tomorrow’s Halloween! I’m so excited! The whole dressing up thing is fu-unn! We have to go pick out our costumes today Liz. I mean any later and we’ll have to go in something we have at home. And let me tell you right now that I’m not going in that cat outfit, its ugly and pink. Not to mention it might’ve gotten a little small since the fourth grade...”

“Of course we’ll go get costumes today!” Liz said giggling. “We’ll buy hot outfits that will knock the guys’ socks’ off. But seriously, Max always comes to class!”

“Lizz..” Maria looked at her with a worried expression on her face, and a warning in her tone.

“It’s okay Maria, I’m not sinking back in to the whole Max thing. It’s over, I’m just worried.”

“Well.. okay, let’s get to your place then we’ll call them. Michael never shows up for class anyhow.”

“Oh wait, Isabel.” Liz said, running over to her, “Hey, where’s Max?”

Isabel turned around to face the two. It’s funny how a year ago she would have never thought about talking to them, and now they were part of her life. Quite a big part in fact. Being the only girls to know their secret, she was bond to them, and she didn’t even mind it that much anymore. “Oh hey Liz, Maria. I have no idea- I haven’t seen him since lunch, which, now I think about it, is pretty weird.”

“But everything’s okay right? I mean there’s no-” Liz was definitely concerned. Max skipping school? Max didn’t skip school anymore than Michael came to school. She knew that they weren’t together now, but she couldn’t help worrying about him. She still loved him after all.

“Other worldly crisis? No, no, everything’s fine. If it wasn’t he definitely would have called.”

“Going to the Halloween Bash tomorrow, Iz?”

“I’m not sure Maria. I mean, I love parties generally, but Halloween? Spirits? Little vampires asking for candy? It’s all a bit lame. Anyways I’ll see you guys later, since Max isn’t here I’ll have to catch a ride home. Later guys!”

“What is it with these aliens and Halloween?” Maria threw her hand up in the air, “I mean I don’t get it. We believe in them, how can they not believe in spirits and stuff?”

“I dunno Maria, it is all a bit, illogical you know.”

“Et tu, Liz?” Maria gasped and clutched her heart, dramatically pretending to have been stabbed.

“No, no, I’m a believer I swear! Don’t harm me!” Liz exclaimed, shrinking away from Maria, and briskly walking to the door. Turning back she was greeted with a mock glare.

“Very funny Lizzy.”

*****

The girls got to the Parker’s house, and Maria sat herself on the bed as Liz went to take a quick shower. Hmm.. bunny? Too slutty. Werewolf? Too poofy.. Vampire? Too Buffy. Maria thought, laying on the bed and going through some magazines. I wonder if I can get Michael to dress up as anything. Mm, maybe a military man.. just then her mobile started ringing, interrupting her very interesting train of thoughts.

“Hello?”

“Maria.”

“Michael! I’m so glad you called, I was thinking about Halloween tomorrow, and I was trying to think of a costume, I was planning to go with enchanted princess or something, you know with the glitter and the purple, or maybe the corpse bride, that would be awe-“

“Maria.”

“And I thought, maybe you wouldn’t mind dressing up either.. It might be fun!”

“Maria! Hell no, okay.” He just had to stop her there. She could not be thinking what he knew she was thinking. No way would he ever dress up in anything ridiculous for some lame almost-public holiday invented so that people could have an excuse to dress up as other things and party. Well, unless she really, really wanted him too.. then he would be officially stuck. “First of all, I would never wear any stupid-ass costume.”

“Not even-”

“No not even the military costume.”

“James Bond?”

James Bond!” Michael repeated incredulously, “You know, if you think about it, I’m already in a costume. I mean this human body is basically a costume for me.” he smirked; he could almost hear her glaring over the phone, “But anyways, that’s not the point. We have more serious things to think about right now. There’s been another sighting.”

“Ohmygod! Where?”

“It’s a little further than marathon. Me, Max and Iz are planning to go check it out tomorrow.”

“What? But when will you be back? And what about Tess?”

Michael hesitated, should he tell her? He had to tell her, she and Liz would just have to go to the party alone. “Don’t know about Tess, and well it’ll probably take all day..”

“Well fine, we’re coming with.”

“What? Maria, what about school?”

“Ha,” she said snorting, “I can’t believe you just said that to me. But, either way, its Halloween, half the students don’t show up to school tomorrow so no one will suspect a thing. My mother’s out selling supplies, and we can fool Liz’s parents any day! Come on, I mean, I don’t want to spend Halloween without you, and no matter what Liz says, she’s lost when she’s not around Max. We can even bring Alex, he’ll keep Isabel company.”

“Well..” Michael smiled inwardly; it really would be more fun with her. Without her and Liz he would have to sit through Isabel’s whining about missing school and Max’s silent brooding about Liz and/or Tess. And the fact that it was silent brooding, didn’t make it any less annoying. “Sure babe. It’s a road trip. You guys come over to my apartment later and we’ll make up a plan.”

“Woohoo! Yay! I’ll tell Liz and get ready! Bye baby!” She said, almost jumping up in excitement.

A moment later Liz entered the room-

“Maria-” she said, coming over and sitting on the bed, her face all joyous. “We’re going on a road trip!”

“What? Hey I was just going to say that to you!” Maria grinned, it was amazing how no matter how different they were- one being serious and headstrong, the other being wacky and independent- sometimes their minds were on exactly the same frequency! But after years of friendship, gossip and emotional stress, it wasn’t surprising. “You talked to Max didn’t you?”

“Michael?” Liz said feeling as excited as Maria looked.

“Yup.”

Clapping, Liz chucked Maria her mobile, “Get Alex on the phone.. Oh, this is going to be fun.”

xmag - you're right, so much potential for fun.. but knowing the pod squad, they're bound to end up disturbing someone (or maybe some spirits?)
by the way, i lurve your banner, its gorgeous!

Chapter Two

By six everyone had gathered at Michael’s apartment for an over look of the “plan”.

“Okay then, we’ll leave tomorrow morning, and hopefully we should get there by lunch. Alex just said he could get his dad’s mini-van and tell him we’re going down to the desert for the day for some research, so I think that’s pretty much covered.”

“Max, how much do we know about this sighting?”

“Not much Iz, all we know is some people saw some glowing Orbs, and there are burn marks on the ground in the shape of a strange symbol. I just think we should check it out in case.”

“We should. I mean, this is important to you guys, and besides, I didn’t feel much like a party. Did you Isabel?” Alex said, returning all his attention to Isabel. Boy, didn’t she look great standing there. If only she would give him a chance.. it felt like she almost did a while ago, but that blew up withe the whole destiny thing.

“Well, I don’t really mind the partying..” She replied, smiling at the lanky boy who had taken such a strong liking to her.

“So, anything else?” Max looked around at the gang.

“What about Tess?” Liz asked, not looking into his eyes. “I already know Kyle doesn’t want to come.”

Ever since Max found out Liz had slept with Kyle he was pulling away from her. And that was what the plan was, that was what she had meant to do, but it hurt her like hell. And since then she had noticed him getting closer to Tess. But as nice as Tess was, there was something wrong with her; something Liz didn’t trust. But how could she explain that to Max?

“Tess is away. She didn’t explain, but she said she would be back in a week or so.” And that’s all Max said before changing the subject. “So. Anything else?”

“I think that’s it.” Alex said slowly, trying to fill the silence. “This is great, a road trip! I haven’t had one of these in years. I think the last time was when Liz, Maria and I went to the beach. And that didn’t end very well, because, oh you must remember Maria, the jellyfish?”

Maria instantly turned red and glared at Alex, “don’t you dare Alex, don’t forget I know countless stories about you too!”

Joining the group in his laughter, he put his hands up, “okay, okay truce.”

“That’s right buddy!” she said, settling back against Michael’s legs, which were hanging off the couch. “Okay, so Liz, Alex and I will take care of food and other assorted things. It really sucks about missing the Halloween Bash though. Say, if we hurry we can maybe make it.”

A loud groan sounded from all the aliens in the room.

“Seriously what is it with all you aliens and Halloween?”

“Maria, it’s just a loud of crap. Spirits, ghosts? Come on.” Michael said, nudging her with his foot.

“You know, believing in aliens was like believing in spirits for me. And now I believe in one, it’s sort off hypocritical not believing in the other.” She said, raising an eyebrow, as if daring them to challenge her beliefs.

“I like to keep an open mind too,” Liz nodded, seconding her best friend.

“Really Liz? Vampires?” Max said raising an eyebrow. He wished he could go to her and poke her.. tease her as he did before. But no more. He couldn’t help feeling jealous of Michael and Maria’s closeness. He and Liz were so distant now..

“Well, okay maybe not vampires. But sprits and stuff? Yeah sure. I’d like to think that those close to us who have died are around us sometimes.”

“I guess so.” Isabel said, considering what Liz was saying, “Still, I could never believe in that stuff unless I saw something to make me believe.”

“I still think it’s all a load of crap.”

“Michael, you always think everything is a load of crap. All the holidays, I mean do you enjoy any of them?” Maria retorted rolling her eyes.

“For your information, I do enjoy holidays- by sitting in my apartment, on my sufficiently comfortable couch, munching Doritos and drinking Snapple while watching the sports channel. Now that is much fulfilling for me.”

“That’s not enjoying or celebrating, that’s called being a useless couch potato.” Maria mumbled.

“Wha-?” Michael said, leaning over to bring his face closer to hers. “Are you saying that I’m useless?”

Isabel decided that she had had enough, no way were they wasting time listening to another episode of the Michael and Maria Shout-it-Out Show. “Michael, shutup. Guys, whose bringing the sleeping bags in case we get stuck?”

*****

The gang was ready to go by nine in the morning. They had all decided to meet in the desert so that none of their parents would catch them.

“Not that there is much cause for worry there, I mean I think by now our parents have realized that we’re old enough to be left on our own sometimes. And that keeping tags on us only causes arguments and anxiety. Besides we’re old enough to protect ourselves. At least we men, right guys?” Alex looked to wards Max and Michael. Michael just continued to haul the bags into the car while Max smiled at him, clearly amused.

“Right who’s driving first?”

“I don’t mind, and I know the way out of the city just fine, so..” Alex volunteered.

“Great, okay everyone get in. Liz do we have sustenance supplies?” Maria said pulling Michael inside the mini van and taking their place at the back.

“Chips, dip, biscuits, sandwiches and candy. Check, check, check, check, and check.” She said, making the things off on her invisible list. “And we have the info about the sighting? Where it is and all?”

“Yeah I have that.” Max replied, joining Liz uncomfortably in the middle row. Isabel and Alex got in comfortably at the front. Alex’s couldn’t be happier with Isabel sitting next to him; this was going to be one good trip.

“Okay than we’re off.”

loviedovie- hehe, im glad you like it xD

Chapter Three

The first few hours of the trip were fun, with Michael and Maria napping at the back- apparently all the making out had exhausted them- Liz and Max sitting in silence in the middle and Alex and Isabel having silly conversations at front. Liz looked around at all of them and sighed happily. It was just so much fun for all of them to let go and enjoy life. With all the alien business and the Nascedo/Tess business they had all forgotten how to have fun. This was the perfect time for that. Granted this was only a one-day thing, but still, at least it was time away from Roswell. The only thing that was bugging her was all this drama between her and Max.

Turning to him, she watched as he stared out the window. “Max?”

“Hmm?” he turned to face her and smiled slightly. Oh god, how she missed that smile.

“Listen, I know there is a lot going on.. or not going on between us two.. but can we just forget it for this trip? I know, I know it’s stupid, but I just want to enjoy this. I mean, look we’re all here. All of us, like before, like right in the beginning when out biggest threat had been Valenti.. and I just, I really need to take a break from all this indifference and.. everything.”

Max regarded her silently, a thoughtful expression on her face. As much as he hated the fact that she gave herself up to Kyle, he couldn’t help but look into her silently pleading eyes and not give in. It was Liz after all.

“Um, yeah, okay. I think i can live with that..” He said, smiling slightly and wondering what the hell he had gotten himself into as she grinned widely and made his heart speed up.

****

Half an hour later, they were silent again. But this time it was a comfortable silence. A silence of two people who couldn’t say it, but were content to just be sitting next to each other.

“A Penny for you thoughts?” Max whispered smiling lazily.

“They’re worth much more than that,” she grinned, “I was just thinking how it’s great for us to be out here, driving around in the desert, forgetting about life for a while. It’s really nice.”

“Yeah, you’re right Liz, it is really nice. And so is just being able to sit with you here, on the road, going somewhere random.” Blushing slightly when he realized what he had said, he cleared his throat and changed the subject, “I think I should volunteer to drive soon, Alex must be tired.”

“Oh Max, I hope you find what your looking for at this sighting.”

“Me too.” He said sighing. “But let’s not think about that until we get there.” Smiling warmly at each other, they lapsed back into comfortable silence. Suddenly he gave an unmanly giggle. Raising an eyebrow, Liz looked over at him, he doesn’t know how cute he is! and followed the line of his arm as he pointed in front of them, “Look at Isabel! Doesn’t she look happy?”

Liz shifted her head to look at the two in front of her. Alex was talking about something in a very animated way which had Iz laughing hysterically.

****

“Alex I can’t believe you did that!”

He puffed out his chest proudly “That’s me! Alex the Saviour.” Then he wrinkled up his face, “But seriously it’s not something I like to remember, I only use it against Maria sometimes. Oh, don’t tell her. She may harm me, and seriously, she looks small, but whoa, that girl can kick box.”

“I won’t.” Iz promised, “Well, at least you relieved her of the terrible pain!” she said, still laughing slightly. “Now we know who to call in a jellyfish crisis!”

“Oh please no, I think now that I’m a grown, ahem, man, if I were ever again put back in that situation I would not choose to save anybody! I’m not as gutsy as I was back then. Seven was a very strong age for me; I was a rock of confidence.”

“Aw, Alex I still think you scream confidence.”

“Really?” he looked at her, doubtful.

“Well, maybe not scream but the confidence is there, definitely.” With that, she blushed slightly, and turned her head out to stare at the window. Alex glanced at her for a few seconds, and then continued to drive, a slight smile on his face. Oh yeah, I’m in.

****

“Maria, your hair is in my face.” Michael groaned.

“Move your face then.”

“Mariaaaa..” Michael whined, but she could feel him smiling.

“Michaelll..” she turned to look up at his face that was still stuffed in her hair, and smiled, “Good nap?”

“I’d say so.” He said, lifting his head up and looking outside. “The clouds are really dark. That’s weird, what time is it?”

“Noon I’d say.” She said, peering over the seats to look at Max’s watch, then out the window to look at the clouds, “That is weird. Wow, it might actually rain.” Then leaning back she snuggled in Michael’s arms again, giving the clouds no more thought. “Mm. I’m so glad we’re back together. And next time we break up, I’m seriously letting you have it. Those street fighting lessons I took in the summer really helped my channel my energy.”

Michael raised an eyebrow “No wonder your stomach feels less flabby..” he said, somehow managing to keep a straight face, while hers went red. Winding Maria up was his favourite thing to do.

“Flabby? Michael, tell me you did not just say ‘flabby’ that is so-” Maria giggled, but stopped instantly when she realized what he had said, “Wait a minute. Did you just call me fat? Take that back spaceboy!”

Smirking he grinned at her, “Nope.”

“Uh!” She gasped whacking his arm a whole bunch of times. “Take that! You impossible guy! Well not even guy.. you impossible little green man!”

“Little? Green?” Raising his eyebrow, Michael laughed as he grabbed her arms, “Okay, okay I take it back, you were never fat.” He said giving her a kiss on the nose, “From now on to never call you fat.. even if I think you are.” He said grinning while her mouth dropped open. “I’m kidding alright. Your gorgeous, I always thought so.”

“I’ll have you know that- really?” she said, her face beaming. Now it was his turn to blush, rolling his eyes and stared out the window. “Aww! Michael!” Maria jumped into his arms and gave him a huge hug. Uneasy for a moment, he looked down at her happy face and couldn’t help hugging her back. As she started kissing down his neck he pondered upon how much he loved her. He loved this girl so much, I mean it’s practically unhealthy, he thought, grinning and slightly blushing at the same time.

Only Maria could make Michael blush.

****

“Guys.” Max said, shaking a sleeping Alex from the front seat, “Michael, Iz.”

“Yeah?” Michael said, poking up from the backseat.

“The gas is running out!”

“What? Alex didn’t you fill her up?” Michael said, prodding Alex until he got up.

“What? Huh..” he mumbled in a sleepy daze, lifting his face suddenly when he realized it was laying on a very awake Isabel’s shoulder. Smiling shyly, he turned to Max and tried to remember his question. “Um.. the van, right. Oh. Well, I yeah, I mean it was basically full when we got out.”

“Basically? Alex!” Liz said, looking worried.

“What?”

“We’re out of gas with an hour left to go.” Max said, and it sounded like the van agreed, because just then it started making puffing sounds and slowing down.

Alex slapped his forehead, “Oh. Shit.”

“So what do we do guys? Any spare fuel in the back or something?”

“Look, there’s a house!” Isabel exclaimed pointing out of the window.

“You’re right. Let’s go ask for help.” Max said stopping the car near the uncommonly large mansion-type house. Getting out he and Liz went up to the front door.

“Just great, broken cars and weird houses.” Isabel mumbled, opening on of the bags by her feet. Rummaging around until she found some candy. “Caramel covered aliens? Are you serious?”

“Hey! I’ll have you know that it maybe Halloween but Roswell’s favourite supernatural characters are still aliens, and that’s all they had in the shop. Look, they’re cute, coloured hair and everything.” Alex said, then looking at Isabel’s face he amended himself, “I mean, sooo not cute, horrible, demeaning, shameful-”

His rant was cut off by Max coming back in the van, “There doesn’t seem to be anyone inside. In fact it doesn’t seem like anyone has been here for ages. It’s not creepy or anything, we might as well just stay here for a while,” Looking up at the sky, his forehead crinkled in worry, “Looks like it’s going to rain.” Then grabbing some bags he went back to join Liz inside.

“A creepy mansion? Oh no, noooo way am I going in some random house. Its Halloween guys! I’m already jittery.” Maria crossed her arms.

“Maria.” Michael and Alex stood in front of her trying to lift her off the seat.

“Nuh-uh, no frickin way I’m getting up.” The guys looked at each other, and then grabbed one of her arms each and hauled her up. “Guys! No, noo, come on! There could be ghosts! And like spiders or something...”

PML, keepsmiling7, xmag and cayla (pretty name btw!) thanx for the comments guys... it's awesome to know people are reading! Don't worry, the fun is just beginning ;)

Chapter Four

“This is actually a pretty nice place.” Isabel commented, noticing the grand doors with beautiful carvings of birds and assorted flowers on them. Running her fingers over the deep etchings, she scrunched up her face when her fingers came back grey, “I mean, you know when you disregard the dust and all.”

“You’re right Isabel, look at this gorgeous lamp.” Liz said from the next room.

“Seriously Liz, a lamp?... Oh my god!” Entering the living room she could not believe her eyes. The whole place was made of rich, dark wood. The sofas were deep burgundy with a touch of gold, and from the ceiling hung a shimmering gold chandelier. The living room looked like it had come from a nineteenth century magazine. If, of course, they had had magazines then. In fact the only 21st century thing in the entire room was the bulbs that hung from the chandelier and the lamp that Liz was looking at.

It had a gold-painted metal base that twisted up four-feet, and on top of it was a dusty red lamp shade and broken bulb.

“Whoa.” Alex said, stepping into the room, “this is- this is, wow.”

“Yeah..” Max agreed, coming in behind him, “at least we know that no ones been here for ages, everything’s as dusty as hell.”

“Liz! Ohhh look what I found! Aren’t they stunning?” Maria ran in, barely giving the room a glance, and shoving two shoes in Liz’s face. “They were lying in the hallway! Look at them! God and turquoise lace Liz! I’m going to try them on.” She said, plopping down on the sofa and coughing as a big poof of cloud surrounded her. “God. This place must be ancient..”

“I see all your fright has gone Maria.” Isabel grinned at the excited girl.

“Pretty things posses great calming powers!” Maria winked at her as Michael came into the room.

“Not bad. I could get used to getting stuck in places like this. They’re like 5 rooms upstairs and 2 bathrooms. Can’t say much about the plumbing though...” coming over to stand next to Maria, he pulled something out of her hair, “You’ve got cobwebs in you hair babe.”

Meanwhile Max had been standing silently near the window looking out.

“Max.” Liz said, putting her head on his shoulder, she just couldn’t help touching him. “What is it?”

“It’s started to rain lightly, and we have to go. We can’t stay the night here.”

“Don’t worry about it Max, let’s go see if we can find something for the van, and if worst comes to worst and we have to stay, then it’s okay we’ll stay; our parents’ are so busy with the Halloween stuff that they won’t realize.” Looking around she added, “It’s a good thing it doesn’t look like anyone’s coming back to this place tonight. Okay?” she said smiling softly at him.

“Okay.” He said smiling back. It was so nice to have Liz to confide in, he thought. She just makes it all so much easier, he thought; her betrayal fading fast in his mind.

****

Half an hour later no one had found any fuel of any kind, and it looked like the rain was getting harder. The sky had turned a greyish-black, which was unusual since it was hardly 4 o’ clock. Michael had raided the kitchen and found some tins of fruits and corn. There were even some old bags of potato chips. Clearly no one had been here for over a year.

By six the rain had only gotten harder and the clouds had only gotten blacker. The gang accepted the fact that they would probably be stuck in the old house till the next morning. Isabel had used her powers to get rid of all the dust on the sofa’s and tables, and since there was no electricity at all the girls lit some candles.

When everything was done, the group sat comfortably in the lounge on various pieces of furniture, and munching crisps while Alex sat in the middle with a torch telling everyone the story of Halloween.

“So, Halloween is the one day when the fine line between the living and the dead, the deceased and breathing, the supernatural and the natural, the-”

“Wacky and the not so wacky?”

“The- yes, well basically Maria, is erased, and the rules of the universe are bent. People believe that souls of the dead and demons of the night come down to earth at this time, to play with the humans. Some people even believe the spirits of the dead come to earth looking for bodies to posses for the next year.”

A collective “Ooo!” sounded around the room- mostly from the girls who couldn’t stop giggling by this time.

“Well I think if we don’t bug them they won’t bug us. So no talk of hating sprits or any crap in this place guys. God knows how old it is! They could be sprits everywhere. The dead old guy that lived here could have murdered his adulterous wife before committing suicide and his essence could still be wondering around looking for people to hack up with a butcher’s knife!”

“Maria seriously? A butcher’s knife.” Michael said, incredulously, “Look how grand this place is. I’m guessing he’s sporting a rifle. He probably has a preference for blondes who wear his dead adulterous wife’s slippers too.”

“Oh shutup. You know the smartass, dirty-mouthed, macho guy always goes first.”

“That is so true!” Isabel said, grinning at Michael, “And anyways that’s why people dress up in ugly costumes, right? To scare away the spirits.. If, of course, there are spirits.”

“And here I thought it was just for fun and candy.” Michael mumbled while Maria nudged him in the ribs.

“Oh well that too of course.” Alex interjected, nodding. “Personally I think the candy is just another way to keep the tradition of Halloween still alive. I mean that’s the only reason kids are interested at all, that and the costumes. Everyone gets a kick outta those. I tried to be Tarzan one year. It was embarrassing. And not to mention not scary or cool at all.”

Laughing, Liz shook her head, “I disagree Alex, you were half naked. It was extremely scary.”

“Half-naked?! He was jumping around pretending to be swinging on things, and I distinctly remember seeing little Alex more than once that Halloween.” Maria popped in, quickly bursting into laughter as the memories washed over her.

“Oh ha-ha.” Alex said making a face. Getting up off the sofa he went and sat himself beside Isabel on the big burgundy sofa. “Girls can we try to stop the Alex-bashing? Just till the end of this trip. Pleeease?” He looked at Maria and Liz, eyes wide, lips in a pout, trying to pull off a decent puppy-face.

Looking at him, Isabel couldn’t help joining the other two girls in their laughter. Giggling she nudged him playfully, “If you never ever, ever make that face again, I think they might agree.”

Alex blushed red, while Maria and Liz shared a secret grin. Alex was finally getting somewhere!

“Remember how we used to make dad dress up as that spaceman, Iz?” Max asked from the floor, where he and Liz were leaning against the wall.

“Oh my god yes! Every year! In the beginning I didn’t even understand why I liked the costume so much. But thinking about it now, it probably had something to do with subconsciously missing ‘home’.”

“Yeah.. But after a while I think we just got him to wear it to see if he could still fit in it.” Max grinned, “Good times.”

“Maria and I used to sit at her house making lanterns! Remember Maria? And if we didn’t have pumpkins we would use melons and stuff. God Ms. Deluca’s kitchen would be a mess by the time we were done!”

“Oh yeah! That was hilarious, mom would get so annoyed but she would ever say anything!”

“You know were the pumpkin thing comes from?” Alex said, perking up as he saw some space to impart his knowledge.

“No, but you probably do..”

“Yeah, no listen, this one’s actually creepy! So there was this guy right? Jack and he was like this drunken-”

Max spoke up, “badass?”

“yeah, basically, and he decides to trick the devil right and capture him. So what he does is, he-”

“-dresses up as a priest, big gold cross in hand and shouts Latin words at it?”

“Not even close Maria. He tricked him into climbing a tree, and then carved a cross on the tree blocking the devil’s way down. Anyways-”

“Is there a point to this story?” Michael raised an eyebrow, while snuggling into Maria.

Ignoring the gang’s frequent interrupts Alex went on, “so when he dies they don’t let him in heaven or hell cause you know they’re really choosy up there, so the devil gives him this single light in a turnip to guide his way around the earth.”

“Turnip?”

“Right. Dunno how that changed.”

“So girls, if anyone sees any creepy moving lanterns, you know who it’s from.” Michael grinned. “Don’t get too scared. And don’t come running to us.”

“Oh whatever Michael, like you wouldn’t go running if you saw a floating lantern.” Maria rolled her eyes.

“I guess we’ll never find out.” He said, winking.

“Oh no,” Isabel said, laughing, “Michael would just stand there and glare at the pumpkin until it exploded!”

“Or just ignore it, until it got sick of trying to scare him” Liz giggled.

“Hey, hey, hey! Low blows girls, I’m not that bad.” Michael grumbled, stuffing his face deeper into Maria’s lap.

Five pairs of eyes stared at the back of his head, unbelieving expressions on their faces, grinning and not saying a word.

chanks_girl, keepsmiling7, pijeechinadoll (thanks again fo the banner! :D ) and xmag thanx for the comments guys, I'm glad you're all enjoying the teasing and fun parts! I tried to make it as enjoyable as i could
here's the next part.. let the creepy-ness begin!

*Chapter Five*

As night fell upon them they all decided to go upstairs into on of the rooms. There were five rooms, and the gang decided on sleeping in groups of two. All the rooms were on the same floor, with a large hallway between them. The storm had only gotten worse and the house was starting to creek.

“Michael! Stop hogging the covers.” Maria whined, tugging it from his grasp.

“Maria! It’s freezing in here!” he tugged it back.

Turning to face him, she glared at him in the dark. So he was just going to leave her cold was he? “Oh trust me I know,” she said with an evil glint in her eyes. A second later Michael gasped and rolled away from her.

“Jesus, Maria! What the hell was that for?”

Grinning coyly, she batted her eyelashes at him, “What? My feet were cold.”

“You little minx.” He said, grinning back at her and coming closer, a well-known glint in his eye, “You know what? I know a good way to warm you up.”

“Oh really?” Maria looked at him suspiciously through narrowed eyes. That I’m-up-to-something face, no matter how adorable it was, was not trustworthy.

“Umm-hmm..” he said coming closer and wrapping the faded-white flowery comforter around them. Just as Maria begun to relax in his arms his hands came up to her stomach and ruthlessly started to tickle her. Squealing and giggling at the same time Maria tried to push him away.

“No, no, no, Michael! Truce! TRUCE!” trying to glare at him, which just wasn’t possible with all the laughing, “Ooooh.. I’m so going to kick your ass!” She said, rolling over him and pinning him to the bed. Rolling her back, Michael smirked as she tumbled back to her side. Instinctively she pushed him slightly. They were laughing and panting at the same time when a loud thud sounded.

“Michael?” Maria said looking around.

He had toppled over the side of the bed.

“Ow..” he groaned.

****

“This place is really pretty.” Liz said, staring at the beautifully painted ceiling above her. She could almost feel at peace looking at the coloured flowers and bright clouds. Almost. But when can I ever feel calm with Max around? She thought, a light blush appearing on her cheeks. Thank god Max was too busy trying not to think about Liz lying on the other side of the bed to notice.

“Yes it is.. this whole thing is kind of nice. I mean, I really want to go see this sighting, and I hope we find some answers, but sometimes taking a break is good.”

“Yeah..” Liz giggled, “She any ghosts yet?”

“Ha ha, not likely Liz..”

Silence took over then, and they both comfortably lay side by side, their minds in their own worlds. It seemed like there was a lot of silence between them these days. Max turned to look at Liz, feeling happy just by watching her. “Liz..” Max begun, momentarily forgetting his words as she turned to look him in the eyes, “I..”

“Yes?” She said, and he dared to believe he could see a tiny shimmer of hope in her eyes. Hope? Why would there be hope? She slept with Kyle. She ended this.

Blinking he broke the spell and looked away. “Nothing. Good night Liz.”

Turning his face away a moment to early, Max missed the broken expression on Liz’s face.

****

Stepping down the creaky old stairs Michael frowned as he reached the front door. Where the hell was that kitchen? He groaned rubbing his head where it hurt, and squinting around to see, well, anything. It was pitch-dark. He loved Maria alright, but sometimes that girl was a handful. Grinning mindlessly he corrected his earlier thought- she was always a handful!

Man, if Kyle heard that last thought he would say he was whipped. Whipped. Michael never thought he would ever, ever call himself whipped, but there it was. That little pixie-girl had him whipped big time. She was just great, completely unique, and sometimes crazy, but always there always ready to care for him. And if I have to get pushed off the bed a few times in exchange for all that, then I think I can deal.

Finally finding the kitchen, Michael found some water, and putting the cold bottle on his head he leaned against the counter. There he was, in the dusty old kitchen, thinking his random thoughts when he heard some music.

What the hell..? Michael cautiously stepped towards the living room, hand raised, ready to blast anything out of the ordinary. The eerie music continued as he stood at the door of the room.

At first he couldn’t see anything, and then slowly he saw some silvery stuff come to view.

People.

They were people, wearing gowns and dancing. Actually dancing, like a scene from an old british movie. Shit. Stumbling against the door Michael blinked a few times, then raising his hand he blasted. Nothing. Nothing happened no one moved. The blast seemed to go through them and hit the sofa which toppled over. What the hell were they? Ghosts? Turning around he sprinted up the stairs running back to the room.

“Maria! I-I saw.. Oh Lord.. You have to see this..” he said, stopping to take a breath.

Groaning Maria sat up in bed and frowned, looking at him, a weird expression on her face, “Michael, you’re hyperventilating” she said pointedly. “Are you okay?”

“Shit Maria, this place is really weird..” then looking away he mumbled, “I think I just saw some ghosts.”

“Excuse me? What?.. Ghosts?” She repeated, raising a perfected shaped eyebrow. Then getting up, she put her hands on his face and looked into his eyes, squinting her own slightly. “Want some Cyprus oil?”

“Want some..? Maria! No. Seriously! Come on I’ll show you.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her out the door.

“Michael, this is stupid, you said so yourself you don’t believe in ghosts. Okay, okay! Stop tugging or you’ll have a Maria-falls-down-the-stairs situation, and then who will save you from the big, bad, terrifying, alien-eating ghosts?”

Ignoring her teasing, Michael pulled her towards the room and shoved her inside.

“And I’m looking at.. what?”

“What the- I’m telling you they were here! Like twenty people, dancing! The waltz! There was music too! Shit.” He rubbed his eyes, trying to make sense of the situation.

“The waltz? You’re telling me you saw twenty-something, waltzing ghosts right here? Michael, you’re tired, come on we’re going to bed.. Wait, they weren’t some alien mojo were they?”

“I don’t think so, I blasted. The sofa fell. Nothing happened to them, but I’m telling you I saw that I saw.”

“Okay, I believe you, but.. They’re gone, and they didn’t seem evil right? So let’s go.” She clearly didn’t believe him.

Michael pouted. “This place creeps me out.”

Maria giggled silently and then dragged him back up the stairs muttering about crazy adorable aliens and hallucinations.

*****

Alex couldn’t sleep. Isabel sleeping on the bed was pretty distracting. Meanwhile he was lying on the floor, staring at the ceiling unable to forget that she was right there sleeping with him. Well, okay, not with him, but still...

“Alex go to sleep.”

“Oh Isabel, you’re up. I-I thought you were sleeping. I mean, not that I was watching you or anything, I mean..”

Giggling slightly she turned to face him, “You guys are going to have to drive tomorrow. You need your rest.”

“Yeah, yeah of course.” Alex said, his nervousness evaporating slightly as he turned to look at her. They stared at each other for a few moments, before Isabel got up, rubbed her face and walked into the adjoining bathroom.

What am I doing with him? She thought staring at herself in the mirror. She liked Alex and all.. he was sweet, and always looked out for her, but.. it was hard for her to let go and let someone in. Max could because he was.. well, he was Max. And Michael was practically forced to let Maria in, because she wouldn’t have it any other way, but Isabel had the upper hand here. And she wasn’t sure whether she wanted to let her strong hold on control go.

Suddenly she heard a blast, followed by many clunking sounds. Whisking around, she looked for the origin of the sound. Nothing. What is that sound? It sounded like someone dragging heavy chains around. Closing her eyes she tried to sense where the noise was coming from. The closet. Walking towards it slowly, she extended her hand towards the doorknob. Taking a deep breath she opened the door. Suddenly a creature jumped out at her. She gasped, jumping back and clutching her chest. Recovering from the fright she looked around for it.

A rat. Letting out a breath she didn’t know she held, she washed her face and when back to the room.

That’s when she heard the noise of dragging chains again.

As always, thanx for the comments - Keepsmiling7, xmag, pijeechinadoll, CandyLand - you guys are awesome!

Chapter Six

Max was having good feelings. Fluttering feelings in his stomach. And he was happy. Lying so close to Liz was really not that good for his, ahem, physical state, but emotionally it was giving him a high. Just being next to her was intoxicating.

Shutting his eyes he was just about to drown in the smell of her and let it lull him to sleep when he heard a creaking. Instantly his eyes opened wide and he got up. The room suddenly seemed too dark and the carpet was giving off an eerie tint. Making sure Liz was sleep he slowly got up and walked towards the door. The creaking got louder. Opening up the door he yelped as something soft bumped into him. Now usually Max wasn’t one to yelp, but these- he would later say to himself- were extenuating circumstances.

As the thing he bumped into let out a little shriek, he knew who it was. “Isabel?”

“Jesus Max, you scared the hell out of me! I’ll probably have white hair in the morning..”

“What are you doing here? What’s wrong?”

“It’s, well, Max this might sound weird but I heard chains. Dragging and chiming chains, and it sounded like it was coming from downstairs. At first I thought it was the closet in the bathroom, but I think it’s something below that.”

“Are you sure Iz? I mean this place is pretty old, just ignore it. We’re only going to be here for a few more hours, you know? Just until the storm dies down.”

“I-um, okay. Yeah sure, I can do that, okay.” Isabel reassured him, still looking a little freaked, “Yeah, fine. It’s just those sounds.. they really crept me out. With everything that’s been happening to us these days, with all the skins.. I don’t know if I can take much more of this.”

“I know.. the drama has been getting to all of us. Just.. we’re in a house- granted it’s sort of creepy- but it’s away from Roswell. Just try and forget about everything okay? Go to bed, I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Okay..” giving Max a hug she turned around and walked away.

Turning around, Max shut the door and walked back over to the bed. Liz had insisted that they share. He was trying to be friends with her so he didn’t argue.. but this was all so hard.

*****

Going to the bathroom, he washed his face with cold water. Why was this all so hard? When did this get screwed up? It was always screwed up, a little voice in his head told him, you just didn’t realize it then. It was true. The whole time he had had a destiny waiting, a destiny with Tess, and he had never known it. So he had gotten close to Liz.

Staring at his wet hands he wondered what his alien hands looked like. Where they really green? After all the whole green alien theory had to come from somewhere. So engrossed in his thoughts he didn’t hear the creak of the door. But a moment later he did feel a presence behind him.

“Liz?” he said looking up into the mirror.

But it wasn’t Liz. There in the mirror was a woman in white, with dark brown hair and a pale face. A dead looking face. Max stood still for a second, caught in her steely gaze. Her black eyes bore into his, and he noticed that her lips were sewn together. For a moment he felt like he had seen her before. Then her eyes shut, and a loud screeching noise emitted from her nose.

Stumbling, Max turned around to look the woman in the eye but there was no one there. Turning back to the mirror he blinked a few times. Nothing. Was he seeing things? Did he make up that woman? He felt like he had seen her before.. Or was Isabel right? Was there something weird about this place?

Heart beating wildly, he went to the bedroom to wake Liz up.

*****

Isabel Evans was not afraid of a lot of things. Alien-hunters and the science teacher’s Botox maybe, but not a lot of things; and she always made it a point to try to rid herself of her fears - in the unlikely situation that she had one, of course. This was one of those times. So instead of going back to her room, which she did not feel like going back into because, creepy sounds aside, there we’re rats in there and the potential prospect of things crawling down her shirt and biting her was not appealing in any form. Shivering involuntarily at the thought, she moved around the corridor.
It was fairly possible that somebody had followed them to the house, like one of the skins, but the thing was they never saw a hint of a car following them at all. Frowning in confusion, Isabel walked towards what looked like a study.

The study was a stunning dusty old room, with mahogany panels all over the floors and halfway up the walls. The tables and chairs were exquisite, with beautiful carvings and shining threads that looked like gold-strips etched into them. In the centre of the room was a large desk, with a leather chair behind it. On top of the chair was a large portrait of an old man. The rest of the walls were filled with bookshelves. God Liz and Max would have a field day if they found out they got stuck in literacy-land.

The first thing Isabel did, even though she felt stupid doing it, was to go close to the picture and check its eyes. Not moving. Great. Staring at the picture a few more seconds she felt like she had seen the old man before. Yeah right. Rolling her eyes at herself, she turned around and walked towards the nearest bookshelf. She was just about to pick out a dusty book when the lights turned out. Frozen in fear, Isabel tip-toed to where she thought the door would be.

An inch from the doorknob something clutched her arm. She tried to let out a scream but another hand went to her mouth. Thrusting around the two pushed each other into the book shelves. Books falling around her, she tried to get him/her to release her. Or at least see the person’s face. But it was too dark. Pulling her hand in front of herself she was just about to use her powers when she was let go. Wrenching open the door she ran to the first place she could see in front of her, with out a single look back - afraid of what she would see. Running she went forward -

Down the stairs.

*****

Maria had to pee. And even if she really didn’t want to get out of the warm covers, and not to mention part with Michael’s warm body she had to. It was important okay? There was nothing else she could do about it- she would have to grudgingly walk to the old creaky bathroom and satisfy herself. In a matter of speaking of course.

After having a long inner debate with her sleepy consciousness, in which she dozed off twice, she shuffled out of bed to fix her little problem, but as soon as she got to the bathroom she screamed. She screamed and she ran.

Michael, jolted awake and followed her, confused about why his girlfriend was running down the hall screaming.

“Maria! Maria! Where the hell are you going? What’s wrong? Baby what happened?” He said, finally catching up to her as she cowered in his arms.

“I saw, I saw something! In white! I-I.. Michael, I’m sorry I didn’t believe you! Ohmygod..” she surrendered himself to his secure embrace as Max and Liz ran down the hall towards them.

“Michael! Maria? What happened?” Liz ran over and hugged her best friend.

“I- we saw things! Ghosts! Michael saw like this party of old dancing people! And I don’t mean my-grandma’s-come-to-life old, but like Pride and Prejudice old!” Maria spoke so fast they hardly could catch the words coming out of her mouth.

“I saw something too.. there’s something going on with this place.”

“No shit, Maxwell.”

“So what do we do? It’s still all stormy out there.” Liz looked nervous.

Suddenly they heard a big bang and some squeaking. Holding on to each other the four of them backed away from the main upstairs hallway- where their rooms were- towards the staircase leading downstairs. There seemed to be a shimmering light coming from the window at the far side of the hall.

“Can you see that?”

“What is it? What’s happening?”

“I don’t know what’s going on!”

“Ohmygod I’m so not ready to die!”

They all whispered simultaneously. Maria clutched Michael and Liz tightly with each hand while Max stood behind Liz protectively. As they backed up Maria felt something grab her from behind. A chill went through her as she squealed and turned around, causing Michael and Liz to be pulled around too. As you can guess none of this ended well. Liz tripped over Max’s feet sending them both down to the floor, while Michael stumbled pushing Maria forward into the person who had grabbed her.

As Maria let out a not-too-small squeal, the person in turngave her an irritated look -

“Ow! Maria” Isabel whined.

“Isabel, you scared the hell out of me! I nearly fell down the stairs! With you by the way, both of us would’ve fallen and broken our necks. There is something weird going on with this place.. there are noises and ghost people! We need to get out of here.” Maria ranted nervously.

“Your right.” Max helped Liz up, where she had fallen over him.

“I think meanwhile we should stay together. How about downstairs?”

“That’s where I saw the ghost people. Not that I really believe in ghosts.. but what else could they be? I mean the blasting didn’t work.”

At once Isabel remembered the blast she had heard before, “Blasting.. Was that like a while ago? I think that’s what I heard from the bathroom! Guys someone grabbed me-”

Suddenly they heard the creaking sound again. They all shut up and stared at the door it was coming from.

Slowly the door opened and a beam of light shone out of it. A second later they saw an orange lantern appear from behind the door. Just as a white robe and a pale foot emerged before them, they all turned and ran down the stairs. A person in white walked out the door and stared down at them.

This was so not what they had planned for tonight.

Chapter Seven

Running down the stairs the gang ran into a room at the side of the house. A room they had never seen before.

“Okay, let’s stay in here and shut the door.”

Looking around, they noticed that it was a dark and dingy room, with dark blue wallpaper on the walls, and gold designs on the door. The carpet was also navy blue, and the room was adorned with big paintings of people and objects. But the most noticeable thing in the room was a beautiful, dusty, wooden piano.

Maria went over to it, a look of awe on her face, “Wow. I never saw this before.”

“You’ve never been here before.” Michael commented, looking around for any creepy ghost-people. “I think we’re safe here.”

“Ohmygod! Alex!” Isabel gasped, slapping her forehead, “I forgot Alex! In the room, he was dosing off! I need to go back and get Alex..” She said, darting to the door.

“I’ll come with you.” Liz stood up going to her.

“Liz, no.. I’ll go. It’s safer.” Max interjected. No matter what was going on between them, he didn’t want her to get hurt. She was too precious for that.

“But-”

“Liz.” Going over to her, he held her gaze, trying to convey what he was feeling, the worry, the fright. Holding her hand for a brief moment, he smiled as she nodded slightly and whispered, “Be careful.”

****

While Max and Isabel left, Michael kept peaking out of the window at the spooky garden. “Michael, what’s all this fascination with the garden about?” Maria asked, peering over her boyfriend’s shoulder.

“I keep seeing a flash.”

“A flash?” Liz said, joining them at the window.

“Yeah.. some light.. outside.”

“Michael there’s nothing there.” Maria sighed, turning around and resting her back against the window.

“Look!”

Swirling around, she joined Liz and Michael and pressed her face against the window. There it was.. a tiny light bobbing around in the air. “A lantern..” It dawned on Maria.

“What?”

“Look, that’s what it is! A lantern..”

“Oh, god Maria,” Michael rolled his eyes, “you can’t seriously mean like that John-lantern guy from the story?”

“Jack Michael. And, well yeah.. hasn’t this night made you believe that something seriously spooky is happening here?”

“Spooky and shitty. Look, I’m going to check it out.”

“What? No..”

“No, we need to figure this out. I mean this is ridiculous, we’re hiding from.. from, God I don’t even know what we’re hiding from! And I’m not going to stand here hiding from nothing! I’m sick of these goddamn ghosts.”

“I think we should go check it out Maria.. Michael’s right. Enough.” Liz looked pointedly at her best friend as she sighed.

“Fine, but we’re all going. And anything happens to me spaceboy and you aren’t getting any for a week. And I mean that.”

“Puh. You can’t keep that promise.” Michael, rolled his eyes, opening the door and walking through.

“Don’t tempt me!”

“Guys, seriously I think we should get going..” Liz said, stepping in between them, a small smile on her face. God these two.. now I know what it’s like to have kids..

****

Max and Isabel tiptoed up the stairs towards the landing. “Max, do you think this could be the skins or something?”

“I don’t know Iz, I don’t think so.. I mean, they’d probably just come out and attack us. The woman I saw in the bathroom looked pretty ghost-like..”

“Max, shh! Ohmygod..” Isabel gasped, seeing a white flash at the top of the stairs, “there’s someone there! Alex! Alex!” She shouted, still not moving towards the room.

“Look, lets just go inside! I don’t think they can actually touch us or anything.” Max moved around her to walk to the door.

Busting the door open they moved inside and looked for Alex, but the bed was rumpled and he was no where to be seen.

A flash appeared from outside the door, and they moved to follow it. As soon as they left the room, the door shut behind them, and they saw another flash at the end of the corridor. Max and Isabel stood, staring at the place where they saw the flash, wondering whether to follow. They stood still, until another flash appeared and this time the woman in the dress that Max had seen before in the bathroom appeared in front of their eyes. Isabel gasped as the woman extended a long finger towards them, signalling them to follow her. In another bright flash she was gone.

“I think she wants us to follow her.” Max mumbled, his breath heaving in his chest.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea... we have to find Alex.”

“Isabel, I’ve seen her before... I think she’s from our past, I have to follow her.”

Hearing some voices, Isabel turned around, “Max, I need to find Alex.” She said, the desperation evident in her voice, “Wait right here, I’ll send Michael up, and I’ll go search for Alex downstairs because he sure isn’t here.”

“Isabel..”

“Max. Don’t move.” She said, silencing him and going back down the stairs. Turning around Max stared at the place where the woman disappeared. Something was telling him that this woman was connected to him..

****

“Michael, stop walking so fast. Not all of us include boots in our general attire.” Maria whined, as her sandals got dirty in the muddy floor. The rain had almost stopped, after all, it had been going on all night, but the clouds were still heavy in the sky.

“Yeah, well maybe they should.” He shot back.

“Some people actually care about what they look like.”

“Doesn’t seem to stop you-”

“Guys! Look! The light.” Liz interrupted, pulling both of them in the direction of the light.

There behind a dark tree was the lantern. It did look like it was floating out of nowhere. Michael squinted. Alien powers? No, that lantern looked like an actual lantern.. and why would an alien use one of those?

Grabbing a shovel out of the ground, he walked around the tree, as if he were sizing it up.

The eerie sounds of the garden made Liz shiver inwardly. She didn’t like this. All this ghost stuff was really starting to scare her.

“Michael, don’t!” Maria whispered urgently as Michael walked towards the tree. Staring at the lantern, he raised his hand and blasted the tree.

The girls gasped as a body fell out.

“What the f-” Michael muttered as a foot knocked him down.

here's the big mystery (i admit, it wasn't that smart.. XD)

Chapter Eight

“Alex! Alex where are you?” Isabel called quietly. She was worried. Way beyond worried. If anything happened to Alex she would never forgive herself. He was so sweet.. and always there. She should have given him a chance. As soon as Tess came and all the Royal Four stuff started she had just thought that it would be better for her to stay away from him. She didn’t need him anyways.. at least not like Max needed Liz. And she didn’t want him like Michael wanted Maria. But standing in the dark, desperately trying to find the one boy who had made her laugh and cared about her regardless of all her bitching she realized that she liked him around her.

She preferred it when he was there, to make silly jokes or to comment on her clothes. It felt weird without him.. He had actually made her feel more like she was part of the group. Sometimes Max would ignore what she said, but Alex would always listen.

“Alex, dammit where are you?” Isabel walked through the halls, using one hand to guide her and the other to light her way. Suddenly she heard them again. Chains. Where were those noises coming from? Chains being dragged and muffled screaming.

Was it all in her head? Was there someone there? Shivers ran down her spine, as the situation got to her and she started to run. She needed it to stop.. the chains the noises..

She ran blindly to the back of the house until she came to a door. Pulling it open it she ran out into the garden. Taking a deep breath she ran her fingers through her hair and tried to calm herself.

“Noo!” Hearing the loud shout she whisked around, hand raised, until she realized it was Maria.

“Maria?” she said, running over, “What’s- who’s that? Alex??”

*****

Michael was shit confused. A body fell out of the tree, that sonovabitch that was holding the floating lantern. And he was just about to beat the said body with his shovel, when Maria, yes, Maria, pushed him aside to the ground. And suddenly Isabel was there gasping. Alex? What about Alex? Getting up, he looked down, prepared to glare at his clearly insane girlfriend.

Ohmygod.

Michael’s mouth fell open. There he was. Alex, dressed in white, his hair full of leaves and white robes splattered in mud.

“Okay, someone tell me what the fuck is going on here!” Michael glared, hands on hips, trying to understand the situation.

Maria giggled nervously, “Okay, you might not find this funny-” she stopped to look at Isabel’s stricken face, “-at all. But we just played a huge prank on you guys.”

“What?!” the aliens stared in horror at their human friends.

“Well..” Liz fumbled, deciding to step in, “Yesterday you guys said you didn’t believe in ghosts and stuff, and we thought we’d make you believe.”

“yeah, it’s all crap really, there are no ghosts.” Alex mumbled, grabbing his head and moaning in pain, “shit Michael, now I know why people stay away from you.”

Looking down at Alex, what had just happened hit Michael like a ton of bricks. A smiled appeared on his face that became wider still as he thought of the past day. Everyone gapped at him as he burst out laughing. Running his hand through his hair, he went over the situation in his head, still in fits of hysteria.

“I can’t- can’t believe you guys!” Michael stuttered, as the laughter died down. By now everyone was grinning, “Why? I mean, that was all such a waste of time!”

“Hey buster! We did a good job okay!” Maria glared at him.

“And it took forever to set up.” Liz added.

Isabel still stood there, staring at the three humans in shock. When she opened her mouth she said the only word that would come into her mind at the time. “How?”

“Well, Kyle was the dude, you know the guy in the white clothes.. he’s probably in there trying to scare Max. We should get him. Anyway so, yeah, Kyle came up here and set up the stuff. The noises and all- recordings. Well, except for the stairs, those are majorly creaky, Alex you need to get those fixed!” she said, pointedly turning to look at him where he was still laying on the floor.

“Alex?” Isabel said, looking down at him. Okay, this was all too confusing. Liz, Alex, Maria and Kyle had set this up? She was pretty sure she was only capable of single-syllables until her brain agreed to wrap itself around the situation.

“Yeah, this is my grandfathers house.. well, we used to call it a mini-mansion. And well, I was going to say we should all spend a week here, but then Maria called me yesterday and thought of this.” He chuckled, “and as much as my ass is protesting right now, scaring you guys for once was a hell-lotta fun!”

"Of course it was Maria," Michael muttered as Maria stuck her tongue out at him.

Rolling her eyes, Isabel grinned, unable to resist Alex’s contagious chuckle. Extending her hand forward she helped him up. “Well.. it was a good prank!”

“Let’s go inside guys and see what Kyle’s doing to Max.” Liz started making her way to the door as the rest followed.

“Wait, wait, wait..” Michael put his hand up in front of Maria’s face, “the ghosts Maria? The ones in the lounge..?”

“Right, holographic-machine above the window.” She said, ignoring his hand and walked towards the house.

“And you screaming?”

“Fake.”

“Oh god.. you bitch. Your good.” Michael’s mouth opened in disbelief. Maria almost glared at him for the bitch thing, but looking at the expression on his face she ended up giggling and looping her arm in his. “Hold on. What about when you shoved me off the bed?”

“You shoved him off the bed?” Liz turned around, a big smile on her face.

“No- I mean yes.. but that wasn’t intentional..” Maria smiled sweetly up at her boyfriend.

“I swear Maria, if you weren’t this hot..”

That made everyone burst into laughter. Reaching the door Liz pulled on the knob. “Guys.. this is locked!”

“What? We didn’t lock it..”

“Max! Kyle.. open the door!” she shouted, “you know, I haven’t seen Kyle since he scared us in the hallway.. and that was ages ago.”

“Neither have I..” Alex agreed, “maybe he fell asleep?”

“I don’t think so..”

“The woman!” Isabel exclaimed loudly, as if she just found the meaning of life, “That’s what was bothering me! How did you guys do the woman.. that isn’t anyone we know..”

“I didn’t see any woman...” Michael said, eyebrow furrowing.

“Hold the phone here guys. What woman? There was no woman, just Kyle!” Maria looked at Isabel, waiting for an explanation.

“Maybe it was Kyle..” Michael mumbled as Maria jabbed him.

“The-the woman.. in a long white dress.. pale, lips sealed!” Isabel stuttered, extremely confused, “You didn’t do that? She was telling us to follow her and- Shit! I was supposed to get Michael to help!”

“Max!” Liz gasped, as they all began to run towards the main entrance.

most of the questions are answered here! i feel like i rushed this part a bit, but i wrote the next few parts in a day (for the contest), so i had to be quick.. i hope it doesn't dissapoint :?

Chapter Nine

Max followed the woman, his heart beating wildly in his chest as she led him through the dark corridors of the house. He barely looked at his surroundings as they walked by, so intent on making sure she didn’t disappear. He held out his hands to touch the walls at his sides as he felt the passages getting narrower.

Max, in his desperation to feel in some sort of control over the situation, tried to ask her some Questions. “Where are we going? Who are you??”

Nothing. Of course she can’t speak, her lips are sealed together you idiot, he scolded himself, starting to wish he had waited for Isabel and Michael. He felt like they were going downstairs.. towards a basement maybe? Suddenly he heard clunking noises. Chains.. chains make clunking noises. What the hell was going on here?

As he followed the translucent woman down some steps he could hear a person speak.. moaning, groaning, tortured noises. After the stairs they walked through another dark corridor. This one had a door at the end. He felt like he was quite far from the house now.. the underground passage had led him somewhere else.

“Wait! Wait, what the hell is that? Where are you taking me?” He was just about to stop walking and run back to the rooms when his eyes picked up a familiar sound. Someone was calling his name. His eyes opened wide as he moved to push the woman and run past her. Of course that didn’t work and he ended up going right through her and falling on the ground. Groaning, Max got up and ran towards the door, busting through it.

It was a room. A pitch dark room. And this was where the noises were coming from. Max moved to call out to the ghost-woman, but turning around, he found out that she had vanished. A second later he felt a sharp pain through his arm as he fell to the floor.

****

“Where could he be?” Isabel said, walking briskly through the mansion as the others ran to catch up with her. “Max!”
But there was no reply.

“Shit, where the hell is Maxwell?” Michael asked rhetorically, starting to get extremely worried.

“Well if we knew, we wouldn’t be standing here!” Isabel snapped, looking a little irritated at Michael and a little bit more scared of the situation. Alex put a comforting hand on her shoulder, and she turned to smile at him slightly.

“I know, I just meant-” Michael begun, an equally annoyed and worried expression on his face.

“Shh! Guys!” Liz said holding up a hand.

Isabel recognised the noises instantly, “that’s the noise I could hear from my bathroom! It sounds like it’s coming from somewhere below the ground.”

“Kyle was doing the clunking to scare you guys!” Alex mumbled.

“Either way, we should check it out, maybe he knows where Max is. Yeah.. he’s probably with Kyle.. right? Oh god I hope they’re okay, and that none of them hurt the other, because Max could have easily clubbed Kyle on the back of his head thinking he was a ghost!” Maria said nervously, not caring that no one was really listening.

“Maria, why would he club a ghost? They wouldn’t be able to feel it.” Michael rolled his eyes, unable to not comment on her ridiculous rant.

“Where is the noise coming from?” Alex went and put his ear to the wall.

“Probably a basement.”

Alex turned to look at Liz, confused, “But.. I’m not sure there is a basement. Guys, we could get lost!”

“Doesn’t matter. We have to try and find them, Alex.” Isabel said, her voice stern.

“Let’s Go. Just follow the noises!” Liz was surprised at how confident she felt about this. Max would be fine; this was all just something spooky going on that would end. Probably karma kicking them in the asses for what they just played on the aliens.

Finding a door at the end of the corridor that led to a steep bunch of stairs the gang went down into the basement, hoping Max was alright, and that Kyle was just stuck in the basement somewhere.

****

“Max.” A foot pushed him back down on the floor as he tried to get up. He was quite certain his right arm had broken. Whoever was stepping on him right now, knew exactly what they were doing, injuring his good hand like that. Max could hardly aim his powers that well with his left hand.

“Uh, I see you are awake. Well, I have a deal for you. I need to know where the granolith is, and you, you Max are going to tell me what I need.”

His head was spinning, he could hear someone calling out to him, but his mind was fuzzy. The granolith? Max groaned inwardly. Not another alien-race thing. Coughing, he raised his head an inch off the floor and growled, “and why the hell would I do that?”

“Ah, I was hoping you would ask me that. Look in front of you Max.”

Shaking his head slightly, Max blinked a few times, unable to see in such darkness. When his eyes adjusted he saw that someone’s cowboy boots were directly in his line of vision. Looking up, he could make out a face.

“Kyle?!” Max exclaimed, and jumped up with all his might, and the person behind him fell due to the force in his push. His freedom was fleeting though, as he felt himself being propelled backwards due to an unknown energy.

“What the hell is this?” His eyes opened wide as, at the opposite side of the room, a figure stepped out of the dark. “Nicholas!”

“One and the same, young king.”

“Wait, who was that woman?” Max asked, confused.

“Oh just an apparition. Not a ghost, is that what you thought Max? Oh, the powerful King Zan believing in silly human stories.. how amusing.”

“But I.. I felt like..”

“Like you knew her? Yes, yes you did. She was a dear friend of your wife’s. Ampythia lived in your palace. We captured her, and after she refused to speak, to spill the secrets of your illustrious kingdom, we bounded her lips so that she may never speak again. Needless to say, you were quite upset.”

Max blinked a few times, stunned at the cruelty in the alien’s voice, “You are a monster.”

“I’ll take that the best way I can.. lets not talk about the past. Now is what is important. We faked that sighting, knowing you would travel to see it. We didn’t know that there would be so many of you, but, we were prepared. Kept tabs on you the whole way. When the storm made it apparent that you might not get to the sighting we decided to come to you. I knew Ampythia would cause a stirring in your subconscious.. We came here to eradicate you, and in the process found your friend skulking around this grand house making clonking noises with chains. So we hit him and, well, as you can see, we bound him with those very same chains.”

Max looked at Kyle, his arms were falling over the side of the chair as he swung them, making the sound that they had been hearing all night long. He had a gag in his mouth and several bruises on his arms. Clearly he had tried to fight them and it took the strength out of him; he looked tired and scared all at the same time. Taking a deep breath, Max played the role of the leader again; “Let him go, you want me, and you have me.”

Nicholas laughed, his laugh cruel and cold, sounding so out of place with the body of the young innocent boy he was in. “That’s were you’re wrong, Max.” he said, spitting out the word in hate, “I don’t want you, I just want the information. Where is the granolith?” walking slowly towards Kyle, he continued, “Besides, the jock will help me in convincing you how important it is for you to tell me..” placing his hand lightly on Kyle’s bruised arm, he squeezed, “and what your putting at stake if you don’t.”

“Don’t worry Kyle, we’ll get out of this. Nicholas, I won’t tell you.”

Pointing his other hand at Max, a ray of red light shot out of his hand, and he grinned sadistically as Max cried out in pain. “Wonderful. Just what I wanted to hear.”

Wincing Max tried to ignore the pain and think of a plan. Hopefully Isabel and Michael are on their way. After all I’m sure Iz will realize that something is not right..

Coming closer to Max, Nicholas stood in front of him and stared in his eyes, “Oh, no, no, no. No point in thinking that. I’ve already got people taking care of your little friends..”

Max’s hazel eyes saw red, and he tried to lash out at Nicholas, but he was too fast for him. Isabel! Liz..

Chapter Ten

Michael touched the wall with both hands, making sure he was going straight. The gang was following behind him, and the place was pretty dark. Suddenly he bumped into a soft body with a blonde head. “Maria!” he sighed, annoyed.

Boy was he surprised when he irritated, “what?” came from behind him!

“Wha- Courtney?!”

“What?” Isabel said, holding her shining light up to see him. Lo and behold there was Courtney and a few other guys behind her.

“What the hell?” Michael managed just before she blasted them all unconscious. Stepping over their bodies she leaned forward brushing her lips against his ear, “Sorry baby, but you weren’t coming around, and I need to get home before this pathetic skin crumbles.”

****

“There they are..” Nicholas’ eyes gleamed as he saw the rest of his hostages being dragged into the room in a gaze. Using his powers he held them all against the wall. As their backs hit the stone wall with a thud they all started to come to.

“Where is this place? I’ve never seen this part of the house..” Alex mumbled, looking around at the cave-like room.

“That’s because it’s not really part of the house. No one knows about it. Now stop asking me pointless questions.” Nicholas snapped.

“What the hell is going on here?” Michael looked around at the dingy cave-like walls and then at Nicholas and glared. He then tried to use his powers, but he found that his arms wouldn’t move. Michael was just about to open up his mouth and give the son of a bitch a good screaming at, when Maria cut him off, “What the fuck have you done to us you asshole?” she said, withering around, trying to get free from the invisible bonds.

“Nothing permanent. Yet.” He said, moving closer to her and placing a hand on her face.

“Hey!” Michael growled “Get away from her!”

But he didn’t, instead he kept his hand on her face for quite a few moments and then moved away grinning, “Interesting.. so you want to get out of here, go home and screw him-” he pointed at Michael. “And you..” he walked to Liz who was beside her, “What pretty eyes.. you want to tell our fair king here the truth about sleeping with the jock over there, and she-” walking towards Isabel, “Wishes that she kissed the lanky boy over there, and he is thinking along the same lines while craving for a can of soda.”

Courtney, standing in the background looked at each of them with glee. Clapping her hands, she quipped, “This is just like a daytime soap!”

Rolling his eyes, Nicholas moved away from them towards Kyle. “Whatever. We have more pressing matters to discuss. One of you will tell me where the granolith is right now, or I will blow his poor boy’s head off.” He said, his tone turning very serious and malicious.

Momentarily forgetting what Nicholas has read from Liz’s mind - what did that mean? Max looked around at the others shaking his head slightly. No, Nicholas could not know. It was too dangerous.

“Do you really want him to die? His whole life wasted?.. I mean he could be a star employee at the cheese factory some day. Why would you, his friends deny him of that?” He snickered. Kyle just glared at him, too beat up to speak. “I can read your memory people. Don’t even try to lie to me.”

Maria’s eyes filled with rage. How dare he do this to them? This whole thing was turning into a nightmare. All they had wanted was to have some fun.. Looking at Michael, she silently conveyed how sorry she was for all of this. He glared back at her. There would be none of this; what the hell is she feeling guilty about anyways? Shaking his head he kept glaring, as if sternly telling her none of this was her fault and feeling bad was ridiculous. She smiled at him slightly, which was all she could muster in the situation, and leaned her head against the wall. What were they going to do?

Isabel’s arms were hurting from being raised above her head on the wall. She had tried as hard as she could but the bond would not break. Nothing could be done. She shared a look with Alex, and she felt oddly comforted as he smiled, what he hoped was a reassuring smile at her. Isabel felt her heart float at his ill-attempt and she promised herself that she would definitely kiss him if they got out of this. No, when. When they got out of this.

Liz, meanwhile couldn’t even look at Max. Her cheeks were burning red and she was scared of the reaction she would get from him. This was wrong, all wrong. He wasn’t supposed to find out. He and Tess were meant to be together. Granted, Tess and Max did seem closer now, but not by much. She could feel his intense gaze on her, but she refused to look up. She knew if she looked up then it would be hard to lie to him. Again. But that was what she had to do.. after they got out of here that is.

The girls broke out of their reverie as Nicholas spoke again. His voice was stern, and you could tell he was using all the patience he could muster to stop him from snapping at them and killing Kyle.

“Tell me where it is, and I will let you all live.”

Max and Michael looked at each other. Could they? They couldn’t. There had to be another way out of this. The skins could not know where the granolith was, it was too powerful for them. The problem was, there was no way to get out of these bonds. Nicholas’ hand rested on Kyle’s forehead and he looked like he was going to do something. Max’s eyes opened wide as he decided what he would say. He would just have to-

“I know where it is! I’ll tell you.”

Nicholas grinned and looked at Maria, who was suddenly very red in the face. “yes..?”

“Well...” She looked and Michael and Max with apologetic eyes, “look guys I’m sorry.. but Kyle..” no one stopped her. No one. They all just looked down, all having some internal debate with themselves. “Its buried.. in the ground, near where the spaceship thingy crashed.”

Nicholas stood in front of Maria, looking at her intently, and she willed her mind to go blank. “Very good.”

She let out a deep breath as he walked away from them towards the far side of the room. “Very good acting.” She gasped slightly, “I almost believed you, didn’t pick up on anything suspicious – your mind was almost blank.. but I know for a fact that it isn’t there. No military evidence and all. So I think we would call that your last shot.”

Liz let out a cry and Michael shouted as Nicholas walked briskly over to Maria and placed his hands on either side of her face. She let out a yelp as she felt him enter her mind. She felt him look at her thoughts; he was raping her subconscious and the pain was exquisite. Then she felt him squeeze on something with his mind and then suddenly she saw no more.

Nicholas released his hands from the girl, and removed his bonds as she sunk to the floor. Liz had tears on her face, and Alex was looking at the boy in quiet shock. Michael on the other hand was pouring out as many insults and threats as he could imagine, his face red in anger.

“Your time is up guys.” He stepped in front of Kyle’s weary face and placed his hands on his head, just like he had done Maria’s. Kyle let out a scream, and suddenly the room was flooded with white light.
