Lylas (CC,K/T,MATURE) COMPLETE - 3/2/09

Post by jbangelo »

Title: Lylas
Author: Jenny
Disclaimer: They still don’t belong to me.
Pairing: Kyle/Tess
Rating: MATURE
Summary: Kyle and Tess go to prom. Misunderstandings abound. Set during Heart of Mine (some dialogue is taken from the episode).
Author’s Note: Written for killjoy and nibbles2 for the Support Stacie Author Auction. Bonus cool points if you know the meaning of the title. ;) This will be two parts, and I hope to have the second part up in the next day or two.

Part 1

“Kyle Valenti, get out of that bathroom right now!”

Tess Harding pounded on the bathroom door with the heel of her hand, much harder than was really necessary, and she winced against the slight pain that it caused. But Kyle was being an even bigger pain, having been occupying the bathroom for well over half an hour. They would need to leave for school soon, and she hadn’t even fixed her hair or brushed her teeth.

When the door finally opened, Kyle was whistling nonchalantly. “Oh, did you need to get in here?” he asked Tess innocently, acting as if he hadn’t heard her hammering on the door.

Tess shoved past him and into the bathroom. “You’re worse than a girl,” she told him. Kyle just chuckled and left her to get ready. She speedily brushed her teeth, aggravated that she had to rush because Kyle had taken his sweet time. I swear, sometimes he’s like an obnoxious little brother, she thought to herself. Not that she knew what it was like to have an obnoxious little brother.

“Come on, Tess, we’re gonna be late!” Kyle called as he passed from the hallway, and Tess could have throttled him. She finished running a hairbrush through her blonde hair, and at a loss for what else to do, pulled it into two low ponytails on each side. Kinda cute, she thought with a lopsided glance in the mirror.

“Tess!” Kyle called again.

“God, give me a second!” she yelled back in exasperation. Typical of him to rush her when it was his fault they were running late in the first place.

She grabbed her things, hoping she wasn’t forgetting anything in her rush, and met Kyle at the car. She had barely gotten inside and closed the door before he was backing out of the driveway. She was all ready to lay into him about his obnoxious morning behavior, but he was already relaying her with an amusing story from the previous day’s baseball practice. Despite herself, Tess couldn’t help but laugh, and by the time they were walking into the school, he had her in stitches.

How Kyle had the astounding ability to piss her off one minute and have her laughing the next, thus making her forget why she’d been mad in the first place, she would never know.

***

Whether the main reason for a relationship is physical attraction, an inner feeling that one shares the same interests or a deep identification, there is much to learn.*

Kyle tuned out the sounds of the bustling students around him, completely immersed in the Buddhism book he’d found in the library a couple days earlier. He paid no attention when another body sat down next to him, but then he felt a pat on his shoulder and a familiar voice said his name.

He sighed deliberately and looked up, annoyed at being interrupted, and greeted Ernie Malamud, one of his (not-so-favorite) teammates.

“You still reading this Hinduism crap?” Malamud asked, a hint of disdain in his voice.

Kyle was so not in the mood for this moron right now, but held his cool. “It’s Buddhism,” he correctly calmly. “And if you’re asking about my spiritual journey, I’m touched,” he added mockingly.

“Well, no, actually,” his friend said, “I was wondering if it’s gonna help you get into Tess Harding’s pants.”

“Right,” Kyle replied, caught off-guard by Malamud’s comment.

“No, I’m serious, man. How long are you gonna let that blonde little hottie live under your roof before you make your move?”

Kyle looked at Malamud for a moment, a dumbstruck look on his face. Truth was, he hadn’t given it much thought. Sure, he’d had the major hots for Tess when she first came to town, but then he’d found out about the alien invasion, and his whole world had turned on its axis. Did he find Tess attractive? Absolutely. Did he enjoy spending time with her? Without a doubt. She’d become, over the course of the last months, one of the most important people in his life. But how did he feel about her?

Malamud was now blabbering on about the upcoming game, and was thankfully cut off by the school bell, signaling the end of lunch period. Kyle stuffed his book in his bag and grabbed his letterman’s jacket. He looked up just in time to see none other than Tess across the hall, walking to class with Pam Troy. She saw him and waved, and a small smile crossed his face as he waved back.

He made his way slowly to his next class, unable to stop thinking about what Malamud had said, and how pretty Tess looked when she smiled.

Damn.

***

“So, you and Kyle,” Pam said to Tess as they settled into their seats in their fifth period English class.

Tess looked at Pam, momentarily caught off-guard. “Me and Kyle?” she repeated dumbly.

“Yeah. Are you two, like, together?” Pam asked, somewhat cautiously.

“No,” Tess answered, drawing the word out.

“Oh,” Pam responded, seeming to perk up a little. “Is he seeing anyone?”

Tess raised an eyebrow in suspicion. “Why?” she asked, avoiding Pam’s question.

Pam shrugged nonchalantly. “If he isn’t, I was thinking of, maybe, you know, asking him to prom.”

“He already has a date,” Tess said quickly. The words were out of her mouth before she even realized what she was saying.

“Oh,” Pam said in disappointment, a small pout forming on her lips. “Who?”

“Me,” Tess answered on autopilot, again shocked at the words coming out of her mouth.

“But you just said—”

“I mean, we’re going as friends.”

“Oh,” Pam said again. “Well.” She pulled a notebook out of her bag and said, “Maybe Ernie then…”

Tess went about pulling her things out of her bag, completely shocked at what she’d just done. What had possessed her to tell Pam that she and Kyle were going to the prom together? They hadn’t so much as discussed the option.

She couldn’t explain it. The minute Pam had said she wanted to ask Kyle to prom, Tess’ predatory instincts had kicked in. She couldn’t fathom the thought of Kyle going to the prom with Pam Troy.

She couldn’t fathom the thought of him going with anyone.

Crap. What have I done?

***

Later that night, Tess sat on her bed trying to finish her homework, but she was beginning to think it was a losing battle. She’d been distracted since her conversation with Pam and her own bizarre behavior. Subsequently, she’d avoided Kyle for most of the day, and she wasn’t even sure why.

Did she want to go to the prom with Kyle? And if she did, why didn’t she just ask him? She didn’t think he’d invited anyone else yet. Her stomach churned again at the thought of Kyle asking some other girl to go to the prom with him.

What was going on with her? Why did picturing Kyle with another girl just make her crazy? Could it be…

Do I have feelings for Kyle?

Her train of thought didn’t go much further, because she heard a soft knock on the door, and none other than the subject of her thoughts poked his head in the room.

“Oh, Kyle, hey.”

“Hey,” he greeted her. He seemed nervous. Tess momentarily panicked that he’d gotten wind of her telling Pam that they were going to prom together.

“What’s up?” Tess asked as casually as possible.

“Last year, I went to the prom with Trudy MacIntire,” Kyle said, and Tess wasn’t sure why he was telling her this. Another involuntary stab of jealousy went through her.

“Oh, Trudy, she’s cute,” Tess said, hoping she sounded enthusiastic.

Kyle nodded, twisting his hands in front of him. “Yeah, and so we went, and everything was okay, but I didn’t really know her, uh, so we didn’t really have much to talk about… to say to each other.” He paused briefly. “And so I realized that I feel like I really know you. Which is unusual for me with girls and, uh, anyway, I just…”

Tess couldn’t help but smile at his rambling, and her heart rate quickened of its own volition. She felt like she knew where he was going with this, and couldn’t believe her good fortune.

“Feel free to say no,” Kyle continued, “or laugh or be outraged or whatever, but would you… want to go to the prom? You know, with me?”

Inside, Tess rejoiced, but she held her composure. As coolly as she could manage, she replied, “You know, I’d really like that, Kyle.”

“Oh.” Kyle seemed genuinely surprised that she’d said yes.

Tess smiled widely. “Thank you,” she told him.

“Sure,” Kyle said, and he smiled. An awkward silence briefly filled the room before he said, “Well, I’ll let you get back to your homework. Good night.”

“Good night,” she responded, and she waited until he was gone before she fell back on the bed in glee. She couldn’t believe that Kyle had actually asked her to prom. And not just because she’d already told Pam that they were going together, but because she did genuinely want to go with him. The idea of going with anyone else had never even occurred to her.

She sat back up abruptly, again wondering about these strange new feelings towards Kyle. She’d never given it much thought. Ever since she arrived in Roswell, Kyle had always just sorta been there, whether it was when he was trying to make a move on her last spring, or as a roommate and… well, a brother.

She moved to put her homework away even though she hadn’t finished it, because she knew she was even less likely to concentrate on it now, but stopped short and gasped when she saw her notebook.

Doodled in the margins of her notebook, over and over again, was Kyle’s name, complete with little hearts. Tess hadn’t even realized she’d been doing it. I really hope Kyle didn’t notice this, she thought in embarrassment, heat spreading across her face.

As she put her notebook away and prepared for bed, Tess came to the realization that the feelings she had for Kyle were anything but sisterly.

*As far as I know, the book Kyle was reading in this scene, The Buddha Advises on Relationships, does not really exist. The quote is taken from this site.
“You know you’re right for someone when they force you to be the best version of yourself.”

Re: Lylas (CC,K/T,MATURE) Part 1/2 - 2/12/09

Well, what was originally planned as a one-shot has morphed into quite a bit more! Looks like it's going to be three parts total now. :)

Thank you all for the fantastic feedback! It means so much to me. :D

Janetfl is the winner of the cool points! Lylas is indeed an acronym for love you like a sister. It's the way my best friend and I used to sign our letters in high school. ;)

Now, without further ado, I give you Part 2 of 3.

Part 2

“Okay, just think about everything that you remember. What did it look like? Smell like? Feel like?”

Max Evans sat next to Tess on his bed, his brow furrowed as he struggled to answer her questions. When he didn’t answer after a moment, she said, “You’re not concentrating.”

“Yes, I am,” Max countered, frustration evident in his tone.

“Something’s getting your way,” Tess said. “What’s going on with you?”

“Actually, there is something I should probably tell you,” he said nervously, meeting her eyes. “Liz and I are going to the prom.”

“So?” Tess responded. “I’m going with Kyle.”

A look of surprise momentarily crossed Max’s face. “Oh. Oh, okay. That’s… that’s good.”

Tess couldn’t help but smile at his reaction. No doubt he had thought that she would be upset that he was taking Liz Parker to the prom. Truth was, Max had barely crossed her thoughts of late – she was much more occupied with a certain other male specimen.

Realizing that her heart wasn’t really in this any more than Max’s was, she suggested, “You know what? Why don’t we put the memory retrieval lessons on the back burner for now? I think we’ve both got other things on our minds.”

A look of relief visibly softened Max’s features. He smiled and said, “I think that’s a good idea. Thanks, Tess.” Spontaneously, he reached out and gave her a friendly hug, which caught Tess briefly by surprise, before she returned the gesture. Truthfully, she wouldn’t mind if they put these lessons on hold permanently – in light of recent developments, it just didn’t seem quite so important anymore.

But unbeknownst to either of them, someone had just witnessed their exchange and walked away with the complete wrong idea.

***

Two days before the big event, Kyle stopped by the Crashdown to pick up some dinner for himself and his father. Liz greeted him at the counter, the takeout bag already in hand.

“What would you and your dad do without us?” she asked with a smile as she punched some numbers into the cash register.

“I shudder to think,” Kyle responded, grinning and pulling some cash out of his wallet. He and the Sheriff ate at least two meals a week at the Crashdown.

“So you and Evans going to the prom?” Kyle asked, making small talk while she rang up his dinner.

“Yeah,” was all Liz said.

“Don’t get too excited now,” he joked.

“It’s just…”

“Complicated,” Kyle finished for her.

“Yeah.” Liz’s shoulders sagged, but she gave Kyle a small smile. “What about you?” she asked. “What lucky lady will you be escorting?”

“Actually, I’m taking Tess,” he answered.

“Oh.”

Kyle raised an eyebrow at Liz. “What?” he asked. He knew Liz wasn’t Tess’ biggest fan, but he really didn’t want her raining on his parade right now.

“Nothing.”

“Liz.”

“Kyle, just… don’t get your hopes up.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kyle asked her, his tone one of irritation.

“Look,” Liz started, handing Kyle his change but avoiding his eyes, “I went over to Max’s last night to talk to him about something, and Tess was there.”

“Yeah, and?”

“They were… well, they looked very cozy.”

When Kyle didn’t respond, Liz said, “I just don’t want to see you get hurt. Take it from someone who knows.”

As Kyle headed home, he thought about what Liz had said. Was she right? Was he just setting himself up to get hurt? He had no doubt that he had feelings for Tess, but were those feelings only one-sided?

Was he just going to lose another girl to Max Evans?

***

Prom night had arrived, and Kyle was torn between wanting to ravish Tess and wanting to run away with his tail between his legs. She looked more beautiful than he’d ever seen her, but he couldn’t stop thinking about his conversation with Liz. It was true that Tess had been chasing after Max ever since she arrived in Roswell, Kyle knew that. But lately he had felt like things were changing between them. He sighed. Maybe he was fooling himself into thinking that she saw him as anything more than a friend.

But she’s at the prom with you, not Max, a voice in his head said.

Probably only because Max wasn’t available, he argued back.

“You okay?” Tess asked him, and he realized that was scowling.

He shook his head. “Yeah, sorry,” he said to her. They had just arrived at the Crashdown for the pre-party. “So, uh, beverage?” he asked awkwardly.

“Yeah, yeah, please,” Tess answered with a nod. “I… I’m just gonna go and sit over there.” She gestured to a nearby booth.

“Good, good. So I’ll get… your beverage.”

With that, Kyle headed to the counter, and Tess settled herself at the booth. Kyle had been acting weird all day, and she couldn’t figure out what was going on with him. She’d been so looking forward to this, but so far, the evening wasn’t off to a very good start.

He’s just nervous, that’s all, Tess told herself. And so am I.

She’d been unable to keep Kyle off her mind since her sudden realization of her feelings. She’d been fantasizing about tonight – about dancing with him to some sappy, romantic song, where he’d pull her close and whisper in ear that she was the most beautiful girl in the room. Then she’d confess her feelings for him, and he would tell her that he felt the same, that he’d wanted her since the moment he met her.

Jeez, when had she turned into such a sap?

But none of that was even going to happen if Kyle didn’t loosen up. She glanced over at him – he was at the counter talking to Maria and still had that same curious expression on his face.

Tess took him a deep breath and willed herself to relax. She’d just give him some time. The night was young, after all, and they hadn’t even made it to the dance yet. She still had plenty of time for her fantasy to come true.

***

The prom was already in full swing by the time their little group arrived. Kyle and Tess and Isabel and Alex headed for the photographer first, to get their pictures made. Then Tess coerced Kyle onto the dance floor, and for a little while he was able to relax and just enjoy himself. Tess seemed to be having the time of her life, and Kyle couldn’t stop the hope that once again welled up in his chest.

After a few fast-paced songs, Tess went to grab them some seats while Kyle headed for the refreshment table to get them some punch. It was there that his good buddy Malamud found him again. Kyle cursed under his breath.

“This is it, big man. The big night,” Malamud said, cuffing Kyle on the shoulder.

“Yeah, this is it,” Kyle replied disinterestedly.

“I envy you, Valenti,” his teammate said, and Kyle followed his eyes to where Tess was seated nearby. Kyle frowned when he saw that she was talking to Max. Talking and smiling.

“All right,” he said, a hint of annoyance in his voice. Annoyance at Malamud. Annoyance at Max. Annoyance at himself.

“Look at that compact little body.”

“All right,” Kyle bit out. Now the annoyance was all for Malamud.

“Bet she’s a firecracker in the sack.”

Was he really still talking? “I wouldn’t know,” was all Kyle said, but Malamud was really starting to push his buttons.

“Yeah, well, you will soon.”

I don’t know about that, Kyle thought.

“Hey, listen, what do you say, you throw her to me for a couple hours after you’re done?”

Kyle snapped. Grabbing the jerk by his collar, he got right in his face and said in a low, threatening voice, “One more word, Malamud, and I’ll do more than just kick your ass on the field.”

“Hey,” Malamud said, holding his hands up defensively, obviously surprised at Kyle’s outburst. “Sorry, man, it was a joke.”

“Ha ha,” Kyle replied humorlessly, shoving Malamud away from him.

He looked back at Tess, who was now alone at the table. Kyle was surprised at his own reaction to Malamud’s inappropriate comments. He had genuinely wanted to hurt him for saying those things about Tess. But while he’d been defending her honor, she’d been flirting with Max.

Kyle knew what he needed to do.

“I thought you were getting drinks,” Tess said when he arrived at the table empty-handed.

“Oh, sorry,” he apologized. He’d completely forgotten about refreshments.

“Are you okay?” Tess asked, cocking her head to the side. “You’ve been distracted all night.”

“Actually, can we go somewhere and talk? Somewhere quiet?”

Tess smiled and said, “Sure.”

She stood up and he took her hand, leading her out of the crowded gym and into the hallway. There were a still quite a few students milling about, so he gestured her to follow him and he opened the first door he came to, a broom closet, and pulled her inside.

He closed the door behind them, trying to gather his courage before turning around to face her. He was trying desperately to think of something to say, some way to let her down easy, to let her know that she was free to go after the guy she really wanted. To do the noble thing.

“Um, Tess, uh, you…” he stuttered, finally looking at her. Damn, she looked hot in that dress.

Focus, you idiot!

“You’re… you’re beautiful,” he said truthfully.

“Thank you,” Tess responded, smiling softly.

“And the thing is, you’re not just some girl. I care about you.”

She still smiled, and Kyle had to look down for fear of getting lost in those bright blue eyes of hers. Then he said the first thing that popped into his head. “I think of you as family. As a sister. I don’t think it could be a romantic thing.”

Fucking hell, did I really just say that? He cringed at his own words.

“Excuse me?” Tess deadpanned, and he looked back at her. The smile was gone, but he was unable to discern the expression on her face. “You’re joking, right?” she asked.

“Uh… I, uh…”

This is why you wanted to go someplace quiet?” She put her hands on her hips. He could certainly read the expression on her face now – anger.

He was confused by her reaction. “What did you think…?” He trailed off, leaving the question open.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Tess said with a huff, dropping her hands against her sides with a little slap. “I thought maybe you were finally going to get off your ass and make a move!”

“I—” Kyle’s jaw dropped. “You what?”

“A sister,” Tess said with a scoff. Her blue eyes were blazing, and Kyle wasn’t sure what to say or what to do. Was she implying that she wanted him to make a move?

He didn’t have much time to contemplate. “A sister,” Tess repeated disdainfully, like the word left a bad taste in her mouth. “I’ll show you a sister.”

And the next thing he knew, she had grabbed the lapels of his jacket, pulled his body flush against hers, and pressed her lips to his.
“You know you’re right for someone when they force you to be the best version of yourself.”

I'm only 22 minutes late.

Final part, ladies and gents. Thanks for all your support. :D

Part 3

Inside the gymnasium, scattered applause and excited chatter floated through the open space as the Senior class president handed out the Junior and Senior superlative awards. Liz had already been named “Most Likely to Succeed” for the Junior class, and Isabel “Best Dressed.”

“And now for ‘Best Athlete,’” the class president announced, looking at his list. “For the Junior class, no surprise here, folks – Kyle Valenti!”

A round of applause echoed throughout the gym, along with a few wolf whistles. When Kyle failed to approach the stage, the announcer repeated his name. “Valenti! You here?”

“Where is Kyle?” Maria asked Liz as they both looked around the crowd.

“I don’t know,” Liz mused. “I don’t see Tess either.”

“Maybe they left,” Alex suggested with a shrug, as the announcer moved on to the next category.

***

Kyle had kissed a lot of girls in his young life. Some good, some bad, some extremely memorable, some not so much. But never in his life could he recall being kissed the way Tess was kissing him right now.

Her lips parted and he swept his tongue into her mouth, feeling a heady rush as their tongues tangled together. He grasped her hips, pulling her body even tighter against his own, and she had her hands at the back of his neck. A groan sounded; he couldn’t be sure which one of them made the sound.

And just as suddenly as it had started, it stopped. Placing her hands on his chest, Tess shoved him away, and he grunted in protest.

He looked at her in bewilderment, instantly missing the heat of her body. She stared back at him, hands on her hips, her chest rising and falling rapidly. “There,” she said pointedly, panting slightly. Daggers seemed to shoot from her eyes. “Still think of me as a sister?”

All Kyle could manage was a shake of his head.

“Then why did you say it?” Tess asked weakly. The anger was instantly gone from her voice and her features, and Kyle saw something in her face that he’d never seen before - vulnerability. “Do you even want to be here with me?” she asked.

“Yes,” Kyle replied with conviction, taking a step closer to her. She responded by taking a step back.

“Then why have you been acting like such a freak all day?” she demanded. “And telling me that you think of me as a sister?”

“Because…” Kyle hesitated, not sure how to answer her question. He started to reach toward her, but stopped himself. “Because I’m scared,” he finally answered honestly.

“Scared?” Tess asked, her eyes round. “Of what?”

Instead of answering her directly, he asked, “What about Max?”

“What about Max?”

“Isn’t he, like, your destiny or whatever?”

“What?”

“Liz told me she saw you over at his house the other night,” Kyle explained. “And I saw you flirting with him earlier.”

“Flirting?” Tess looked at him in confusion. “I was just asking him how his night was going.” She paused. “Is that what this is all about?” she asked, realization dawning in her eyes. “Kyle… the thing with Max…” She faltered, and looked down at the floor briefly before looking back at him. “You’re the one I can’t stop thinking about.”

Kyle took another step towards her. She didn’t back away this time. “Really?” he asked, and Tess nodded.

“There’s nothing going on with you and Evans?”

“We’re friends,” Tess responded.

Kyle was now standing directly in front of her. “And us?” he asked softly.

“You tell me,” she said, a little of the fire back in her voice. She jabbed a finger into his chest, hard. “You’re the one saying I’m like a sister to you.”

“I’m sorry,” he apologized, grabbing her finger. “It was the first thing that popped in my head.” He shook his head. “I definitely,” he tucked a strand of loose hair behind her ear, “do not think of you,” he touched her cheek, “as a sister.”

He leaned in slowly, giving her the opportunity to back away, but she didn’t. He took his chance and kissed her, slower and more gently than they’d been kissing before.

Tess whimpered slightly, then pulled him deeper into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck. His heart seemed to plummet into his stomach as he pulled her body as close to him as he possibly could. One hand cradled the back of her head and the other stroked the smooth, bare skin on her back. He could feel goosebumps rise on her flesh.

It was better than he ever could have imagined, being wrapped in her arms like this. The feel of her skin under his fingers, every pleasured sound that emitted from her lips, the way her fingers threaded through his hair, it was like some fantastic dream that he never wanted to wake up from.

He was lost in a sea of sensation. Before he even realized it, Tess had backed up roughly against the shelves lining the wall, and a few bottles of cleaning solution fell to the floor. Neither of them paid any attention, just kept kissing and touching.

When his fingers brushed the underside of her breast, she let out a small gasp. “Sorry,” he mumbled, moving his hands away.

“No. Don’t stop,” Tess said, her voice breathless.

Kyle didn’t need to be told twice.

***

“Should we go look for them?” Maria asked later. Thirty minutes had passed since the awards were announced, and the prom was starting to wind down.

“I guess we should,” Liz said, looking at her watch. “We only have the limo until midnight.”

“We’ve still got plenty of time,” Max said, handing Liz a glass of punch. She took it with a grateful smile.

“What are you so worried about?” Michael asked his girlfriend. “They’re probably just in a closet somewhere making out.”

Maria lightly hit him on the arm. “Michael, you perv.”

***

Tess dropped her head back against the shelf behind her, a sigh of pleasure escaping her lips. Her hands gripped the back of Kyle’s head, holding him in place where his tongue swirled around her nipple. She felt as though she’d died and gone to heaven.

Kyle slowly kissed his way back up to her face, the touch of his lips leaving a trail of fire on her skin. She could feel his arousal for her up against her thigh, and she wanted so badly to touch him, but couldn’t quite work up the nerve.

“Tess…” Her name fell from his lips in a breathy whisper, and she could feel his breath skitter across her face. Never in her life had she been so turned on.

Just as she was about to be bold and touch him like she wanted to, they heard the distinct sound of someone pulling at the door, and they both jerked their heads in that direction, eyes wide with panic. Thankfully Kyle had locked it when they came in, and the person on the other side seemed to give up after a couple of failed attempts at getting it open.

Kyle looked back at Tess, his eyes wide and dark. His heavy breathing matched her own, but they both seemed to be coming back to their senses.

“Tess,” he murmured, pushing her hair away from her face, which had now fallen out of its glamorous updo. “I want you… so bad. But, not here. Not in a broom closet.”

Tess smiled. It couldn’t have been a more perfect thing to say. “You really are Mr. Nobility tonight, aren’t you?” she asked, her voice teasing.

“I do what I can,” he teased back, his blue eyes twinkling. Reverently, he pulled the straps of her dress back into place, dropping a light kiss onto her shoulder as he did so.

“We should go,” she said regretfully. “We’ve been gone for a long time.”

Kyle nodded his head in agreement, and they quietly and discreetly slipped from the closet and made their way back to the gym to find the others.

“Where have you two been?” Maria asked.

“What are you talking about?” Kyle asked, the corners of his lips twitching. “We’ve been here the whole time.”

Tess stifled her laughter at Maria’s bemused expression. She was glad to see that Michael had decided to show up after all, and he looked quite handsome in his tux. She noticed the Liz and Max were seated side by side at the table, hands entwined, and Isabel and Alex were still on the dance floor, looking for all the world like they were the only two people on the planet.

Tess wondered if all of them were feeling what she was feeling at the moment.

That this just might have been the greatest night of her life.

***

“Kyle Valenti, I swear to Buddha, if you make us late again, I really will slag you with my death ray eyes!”

Tess Harding once again pounded on the bathroom door with her fist, tempted to use her powers and just barge in. What could he possibly be doing in there every morning that took so damn long?

She stumbled slightly when the door suddenly opened beneath her onslaught, then let out a surprised squeak when Kyle grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her inside.

“Kyle!” She lightly hit him in the chest. He responded by grabbing her by the hips and lifting her up to sit on the vanity.

“We are going to be late for school!” she scolded, but her protest was already dying as Kyle kissed the spot behind her ear - a spot that he had already discovered she liked very much.

“We can stand to be a little bit late,” Kyle murmured, kissing a trail along her neck. Tess shivered, bringing her hands up to thread through his freshly-washed hair.

“Okay, maybe a little,” she sighed happily, and she was sure she felt him smiling against her skin.

How Kyle had the astounding ability to piss her off one minute and have her giggling like a schoolgirl the next… well, now she knew.

THE END
“You know you’re right for someone when they force you to be the best version of yourself.”
