Summary: Pre-Pilot. The fourth graders take a field trip. Drabble; 100 words.

Maria stared out the window of the activity bus as she waited impatiently for the day’s journey to begin.
“Michael’s the only one not going on the field trip,” she observed. “I heard his foster dad wouldn’t sign his permission slip. I’d be so mad if I didn’t get to go to the circus.”
“Maybe you should bring him something back,” Liz suggested.
“I can’t do that! He’ll think I like him.”
“So, keep it a secret.”
And keep it a secret she did. It would be years before Michael learned who left the red balloon tied to his chair.
