"… if you open the door,
I'll give a whole lot more …
I could be anyone but your friend ..."

Michael walked the darkened streets alone with his thoughts. He'd gone back to
the hospital after Nasedo had gone and finding the others had left had set out into
the night to find them. He figured they'd gone off somewhere to regroup and discuss
what had happened and being that it was almost eleven o'clock, he'd guessed they'd
gone to the Crashdown for a post closing get together.

He'd headed off in the general direction of the alien themed restaurant, and now happy
to take his time getting there, took a quiet moment while he walked to mull over what
they'd learned so far. Nasedo hadn't gone into much detail about their past lives, but
enough had been said to trigger certain thoughts and feelings inside him.

He couldn't really remember his life back then but he knew instinctively the sort of man
he'd been. He'd been a competent and skilled warrior, strong and loyal to his king, but
above all else a ruthless and sometimes viscous adversary. He'd loved the fight, he
knew this without question but the knowledge sat uncomfortably with him. He wasn't
sure how much of who he'd been remained, but the pleasure that thoughts of slowly
torturing and murdering Maria's abductor brought forth didn't make him happy.

The feeling wasn't totally unfamiliar however, he recognised it well. He'd felt it before
and an image suddenly came to him of Agent Pierce's silent corpse. He'd certainly
suffered anguished feelings of guilt and remorse after that whole incident, but part of
him had been pleased. He remembered the feeling of power flowing through him, the
excitement and thrill of lashing out with all he'd had. For a moment he'd felt the full
potential of who he was shine through his humanity and he'd been glad.

Michael suppressed a shudder and forced himself to face the truth of what he'd learned.
Part of him enjoyed killing. It was difficult to accept and even harder to understand, but
good or bad he could not ignore it. He'd been bred for war, at least in his last life, and
whoever had engineered this new version of himself had included the essence of what
he'd been.

He swallowed nervously and stuffed his fists deep into his pockets, he was scared.
Scared that he wouldn't be able to help Maria; scared that she would die despite his
best efforts; but mostly, he was terrified of what he could, or would, become.

He didn't want to be the cold and ruthless commander he sensed at his core. He was
constantly confused by his human side and often hated the complexity it brought into
his life, but this seemed preferable to the desolation and horror of which his alien self
seemed capable.

Was he going to be a danger to those he cared about? Could he contain this part of
himself and still fight and win? Michael didn't know. He'd always feared that when the
time came he wouldn't be strong enough to face his responsibilities, but now he was
more worried about the cost of succeeding.

He thought of Maria and his expression hardened, it didn't really matter the cost. Her
life was worth any price and he would do everything in his power to protect it. If he
had to sell his soul to the devil and embrace his alien side to keep her safe, he would.
A tiny voice inside him cautioned that Maria would fight him every step of the way,
she would not want that for him, but he silenced it with thoughts of her pale and
lifeless body.

He sighed tiredly and stopped walking for a moment to rest, she was getting weak. He
peered down at his dirty shoes, deep in thought. He felt drained from the dream walk
and knew he should have recouped a little more then he had. It was obvious that she
was feeding off his energy levels much more then before, she was running out of time.

They had to figure out a way to get her out of there and soon. He scowled, they had
to find Lysus and he had no idea where to begin looking. His brow wrinkled as he
frowned, he wished he knew why he'd taken Maria in the first place and why they'd not
heard from him. There must be more to this surely, a reason for it, something that he
wanted.

Maria had told them that he'd wanted them all dead, and he believed her, but if that
was the case why hadn't he tried already? No, there was something else going on,
there had to be.

Michael looked up from contemplating his booted feet and blinked in surprise. Without
realising it he'd arrived at the Crashdown. The doors were closed and the lights out
front were off, but he could see through the glass doors that his friends were still
seated inside.

He paused for a moment and took a deep, satisfying breath. He was exhausted but
knew that he had to go inside and face them. He closed his eyes and gathered his
thoughts. It wasn't going to be pleasant rehashing what had happened during the
dream walk, he wasn't looking forward to seeing the disappointment and worry in their
faces, but he knew that it had to be done. Swallowing a sigh he took the remaining
steps towards the doors and finding them unlocked, pushed them open and walked
inside.

As he approached the booth towards the back where his friends were huddled, he
noticed Liz coming through the door from the kitchen.

"Michael, you're here."

At Liz's words the group collectively turned to look in his direction and he nodded in
greeting.

They shuffled over to make room for him and he grabbed a nearby chair and spun it
around to straddle it backwards. They looked at him and an uneasy silence settled
around them.

"You want something to eat Michael? The kitchen's closed but I can rustle you up
something if you like?"

Michael shook his head, "No thanks, I'm good, but I wouldn't mind a cup of coffee."

Liz nodded and hurried over to the coffee machine behind the counter.

"So, where'd you get to?" Alex voiced the question they were all wondering aloud
and belatedly realised that he was probably jumping into waters that he shouldn't.

Michael gave the tall, lanky young man a brief look and ignored the question. Instead,
he looked over at Isabel and asked in a soft voice. "How are you feeling?"

Isabel shrugged and took another sip of her third cup of coffee. "I'm ok I guess. Tired,
but ok. What about you?"

Michael nodded, "Pretty much the same."

Isabel looked at him closely, he looked terrible. His eyes were red rimmed and glassy
and his mouth was tight. He looked completely washed out and she sighed, she was
sure she didn't look much better. She was starting to feel a little more like herself but
she was still fighting an over whelming sense of fatigue.

Moments later Liz returned with a fresh pot of coffee and mug for Michael and leaned
over to refill everyone's cup. Once satisfied, she returned the pot to keep it warm and
settled back into her seat beside Alex on the far side of the booth.

They'd arrived over an hour before, had satisfied their hunger and then passed the time
with inconsequential chatter. Now though the restaurant was empty, the staff had
closed up and left for the day and the time had come to talk of more important things.

Alex glanced at Isabel as he leaned back in his seat, his posture was relaxed but those
that knew him well saw the intensity in his gaze. "I don't know about the rest of you,
but the suspense is just about killing me. Are you guys ready to tell us what happened?"

Michael's eyes flickered over to Isabel but he remained silent. Max and Liz shared a
brief look then both turned to look at her expectantly. Even Tess remained focused
on her and Isabel sighed deeply and closed her eyes for a moment. Obviously they
wanted to hear her tell the story, so be it. She opened her eyes and began.

"Well it was pretty strange. I had no difficulty getting into Michael's head but I didn't
expect to have too many problems with that. We ended up in the same place that
Michael had dreamt about. Remember he told us that he'd met a creature there that
had helped him bond with Maria?"

They each nodded, "Well, I met it as well. It was amazing, it was this huge beautiful
black cat. Like something you'd read about in some fantasy story. I thought it was
impressive of Michael to have dreamt up such a creature in his imagination but it told
us that we weren't in fact in his mind at all."

Max frowned, "What do you mean?"

"Well, because I dream walked Michael, we assumed that whatever he'd dreamt
about and what we were seeing was part of his mind. His own creation, but the
cat told us that we'd actually travelled outside of this existence to a spiritual plane
of some sort."

Liz looked at Alex and he returned her amazed expression before asking, "So you
astral projected or something?"

All eyes looked to him in question and he shrugged, "What? I've been best friends
with Maria for most of my life, what did you expect?"

Liz smiled wistfully, how she missed her friend.

"I'm not really sure how we got there, but we'd done it before during the balance.
Anyway this creature told us that we had access to it because of our alien powers.
They spoke to us about patterns of life and how Maria was somehow central to the
survival of all life in the universe. They didn't say how or why, only that we had
to save her. They warned us that we weren't going to have the strength to rescue
her and they were right. We managed to find her in the darkness that she resides in,
how we did that I still don't know. Although I do know that if Michael hadn't been
there we wouldn't have made it as far as we did."

Michael shifted uncomfortably in his seat and tried to ignore the looks they sent him.
Isabel smiled slightly at his discomfort and continued, "We walked into this void, it was
completely black, there was no light at all and it was terrifying. Maria was in there,
a voice in the darkness. It was like she WAS the void, it was horrible. But we found
her and talked to her, although not for long."

Liz leaned forward in her seat and rested her elbows on the table, "What did she say?"

"Not much really, she didn't seem to know how much time had passed since she'd
been there and she didn't tell us how she'd gotten there in the first place, there just
wasn't time, but she did tell us that Lysus was the one who'd put her there."

She stopped to take another sip of coffee, "She said he told her that he had big plans
for us, basically he wants us dead but for some reason seems to have a particular
interest in Michael." She paused and gave Michael a considering look, "I've been
thinking about that and it has to have something to do with the fact that he was the
one who brought him to justice for the murder of our father."

Michael looked thoughtful, "You're probably right, but I've been thinking too and I'm
sure there's got to be more to this then that."

Max nodded, "Yeah, I agree with Michael. There's something else going on, I can
almost feel it." He gave Tess a quick glance then looked at Isabel, "Can't you?"

"I'm not sure, I'm so tired at the moment I can't trust my instincts."

Max frowned and looked at his sister's weary face. "This really took it out of you didn't
it?"

Isabel nodded, "Yeah, I've never been so tired after a dream walk before. I've never
experienced anything like it." She looked at her brother worriedly, "It took everything
we had to find her Max, and once we'd made contact it was like our power drained
away. It was the hardest thing I think I've ever done, it's going to be extremely difficult
to get her out of there."

Michael ran his fingers through his unruly hair and climbed to his feet, "I don't think
we're going to be able to go back and get her out that way. There has to be another
option."

Alex looked up at the tall alien and was about to speak when he noticed a man standing
just outside the front doors of the cafe. He turned to the petite dark haired girl beside
him, "Hey Liz, there's a guy out front, you want me to go tell him we're closed?"

Everyone turned their attention to the entrance as Liz stood and started toward the front.
"No, I'll get it, won't be a sec."

Liz had taken a few steps away from the table when she was stopped by a vice like hand
gripping her arm. Looking back she saw that it was Michael. She opened her
mouth to question him but was suddenly silenced by the ferocious expression on his face.

"Michael? What is it?"

Michael stared through the glass at the man who stood on the other side of the doors.
He knew that face, it was burned into his mind like a brand.

Max stood up and came to stand beside his friend, "Michael, what's going on?"

Michael remained motionless and stared into the eyes of his enemy, "It's him, the guy
from my dream." He paused and felt the beginnings of his power build, "It's Lysus."

"… the truth it begins,
we're breathing it in,
with shadows of doubt ..."

Max studied the face of their enemy and was surprised that he didn't seem terribly
frightening. He was an ordinary looking man, nothing about him indicated that
he was an evil alien responsible for the ill health of their friend, and he continued
searching his face for signs of the monster he expected him to be.

He was fairly tall, of average weight and thick dark hair settled unevenly on a broad
forehead above equally thick straight brows. He had very ordinary features, nothing
about his face invited a second look and Max looked sideways at his friend to confirm
that this was indeed their adversary.

Michael hadn't moved a muscle, he was rigid and still, staring through the glass and
his expression brooked no argument. Max knew that as far as Michael was concerned,
this ordinary, everyday guy was the one responsible for their current predicament.

"Michael, are you sure?" Liz whispered the words into the silence of the room and
everyone glanced in his direction.

He remained frozen in place for a moment before physically shifting his focus to the slim
brunette beside him. "Yeah, I'm sure. The question is what does he want." He looked
at Max beside him, "I suggest we find out. You ready for this?"

Max met his eyes and read his friend's determination and strength shine through the
overwhelming weariness in his gaze. He knew he was about ready to drop and
knowing he was no where near full strength added additional worry to the huge
unknown that awaited them.

"I am if you are Michael, are you sure you're up for it?"

Michael nodded then turned to regard the others standing around them, "All of you
need to get out of here." He looked specifically at Liz, "Can you take everyone
upstairs?"

Isabel frowned, "What are you going to do Michael?" At his hard look she continued,
"Oh no, no way, if you think I'm going to leave you two down here to face him on your
own you're crazy."

Alex moved to stand beside Isabel and glanced at Michael, "I think Michael's right
Isabel, you're exhausted, you need rest."

Isabel felt the concern behind his words and her expression softened. "I know you're
worried Alex, but I'm ok. Michael is just as worn out as I am and besides, I can't let
them face him alone, what if something happens and they need me?"

"Is, I don't think anything's going to happen to us, if he wanted us dead this instant I
imagine he'd not be waiting patiently outside for us. It's going to be fine, we'll handle it.
Trust me." Max tried to sound reassured but was well aware that he was not.

"Well if there's no danger then why can't we all stay?" Liz crossed her arms across her
chest and glared at him.

Max sighed almost inaudibly and took a step toward her, "Liz, there isn't time for this,
we really don't know what he's about and I'd feel better if you were well away from the
confrontation..."

"This isn't just an alien issue Max, Maria is my best friend." Liz glanced at Alex, "We
deserve to know as much about what's going on as you do."

Max frowned at her, he'd not seen this side of her and was somewhat surprised. He
hadn't realised how stubborn she could be, the thought almost made him smile. "Liz,
this has nothing to do with being alien or not, we don't know what he's planning and
it's just not safe. We're not going to keep anything from you, we're going to go out
there and see what he wants, that's all."

Liz scowled, she wasn't ready to concede just yet, "No Max, we ..."

Michael turned and interrupted her, his voice harsh and uncompromising. "No. He
already has more then enough leverage to get what he wants, whatever that is. I'm
not willing to give him any more."

His clipped words silenced any other protests. It brought to mind the reason why they
were there in the first place. Maria was near death and this was the best chance
they'd had of finding out why.

"Alright, but I don't like this Max, not at all." Isabel gave her brother a hard look then
reluctantly turned and headed towards the back of the restaurant.

Liz looked from Max to Michael, her posture stiff. "You get us if you need us." It wasn't
a question and Michael didn't bother responding. She turned away and followed the
taller girl, a silent Alex fell into step beside her.

Max looked down at Tess who stood beside him, "You need to go too Tess."

Tess opened her mouth to argue but was silenced as he continued, "Isabel is
exhausted, she's got hardly any power left and if something does happen to us you'll
be the only one that has any chance of protecting the others. Do you understand? If
we fall, it'll be up to you."

Tess looked at him with complete confidence, "You won't." At Max's narrowed look
she sighed, "Ok Max, but be careful."

Max nodded and watched as she turned and walked away. He returned his attention
to Michael and saw that he was once again watching Lysus through the front doors of
the restaurant.

"Ok, let's do this." Michael's voice was low and gravely, he took a breath and
straightened his shoulders, mentally preparing himself for the task ahead. Max watched
him stride towards the doors and followed close behind.

Once outside the pair moved beyond the circle of light produced by the interior lights of
the restaurant and came to stand a few metres in front of their dark haired nemesis.

They regarded each other in silence for several minutes before the alien spoke, breaking
the quiet of the night.

"You know who I am." The words were a statement of fact and his deep voice sounded
a little surprised.

Michael forcibly reigned in his temper and despite his weariness felt an impressive
amount of energy pool in his stomach. He wanted nothing more then to crush his face
into dust, but knew that giving in to the urge would mean certain death for Maria, so
he calmed himself and replied. "Yeah we know who you are. We also know what you've
done."

Lysus did not look overly concerned. "So, you've got it all figured out have you? I
must say that is impressive, Maria did seem rather confident that you'd rescue her,
perhaps your hybridisation has improved your intelligence." He paused for a moment
to study them up close and smiled, "How strange you look, although I suppose it has
been a while since our paths crossed. You're little more then children aren't you?"

Max frowned, "You might be surprised."

"What do you want?" Michael ignored the useless chitchat and got straight to the point.

Lysus looked at him intently, "Ah the direct approach, why doesn't that surprise me?
You were always quick to strike Rath, nice to see that trait was not bred out of you."

Michael scowled and folded his arms defensively across his chest. "The name's Michael."

Lysus raised an eyebrow but did not respond. Instead, he wandered over to lean
against the outside wall of the restaurant, taking a long moment to settle himself
comfortably.

Michael watched him with growing agitation and unable to help himself spoke out, his
voice clipped and direct. "Why?"

Lysus glanced in his direction and did not pretend to misunderstand his question, his thin
lips curled into a cold smile and Michael felt an involuntary shiver shoot down his spine.

"Why? Why do you think?"

Max took a deep breath and forced himself to calm. It was difficult to ignore the angry
vibes emanating from Michael, he was projecting them so clearly that he almost felt they
belonged to himself. He was somewhat surprised at the loss of control Michael was
exhibiting and realised again just how exhausted he must be, he wasn't normally so free
with his emotions.

"I don't know why, she's innocent in this, whatever 'this' is." Michael replied.

Lysus' expression hardened and his eyes glittered dangerously, "Innocent? Since when
did innocence hold any weight with you?"

Max looked at Michael in confusion then addressed the alien, "What are you talking
about?"

Lysus laughed bitterly, "Like you don't know."

Michael and Max shared a look, "I don't know what you think this is about, but believe me
when I say we don't have a clue. We don't remember much from out past lives."

Lysus gave them a disbelieving look, "Then how is it you know me?"

Max glanced at Michael before responding, "We have our ways."

Lysus grunted and stood away from the wall, "Well, that is neither here nor there. I
haven't got time to chit chat, I'm a busy man. Let's cut to the chase. I've got
something you want, and you've go something I need. I propose an exchange."

Michael blinked in surprise. This wasn't what he'd expected at all. The guy wanted to
ransom Maria, but for what, and for God's sake why? He glanced at Max and saw him
look back at him in question. This was certainly not at all what they'd imagined, besides,
Maria had told him that Lysus had said he'd wanted them all dead and that she was going
to be the first to go. If that was true, then why all of a sudden was he trying to make
a deal? He'd known there was more to this then petty revenge, although for what he had
no idea.

At his silence Max took the initiative. "What is it you want?"

Lysus took a couple of steps forward and looked from one to the other, "I have spent my
entire life studying the Ancient's of our world and I have searched for the key to all their
knowledge and power. I have suffered and sacrificed much, including my life, to obtain it
and I will not be denied. I am almost done and have collected all but one tiny piece of
the puzzle. That piece was the most difficult to find, but find it I have." He paused and
allowed his gaze to fall to Michael, "It was sent far away from our lands, to a tiny blue
planet in another solar system. It was sent here, with you."

Michael held his gaze and saw for the first time something in his eyes that seemed familiar.
Some small spark that resonated with his alien self and he suddenly felt uneasy.

Max looked from one to the other and interrupted, "What are you talking about? What
piece?"

Lysus tore his gaze away from Michael and focused on the man who would be King. "It is
an ancient artefact that the ruling house of Antar has secretly had in its possession for
centuries. I did not know at the time that the very thing I hungered for was underneath
my very nose. It is ironic that I never thought to find it there, but then, why would I?
I was stripped of my position, title and ultimately my life because of my search, why would
I have thought the King who'd banished me would possess such a relic?"

Michael blinked and tried to fathom what he was talking about. An ancient artefact?

He switched his gaze to Michael, "It is the last element needed to complete my life's work,
and you have it. Of course, I hold your lover's life in my hands so I suppose one could
say we're even."

Michael's expression grew fierce and he unfolded his arms and clenched his fists. "We
don't know anything about any ancient relic."

"Then you'd better find out quickly, your girlfriend's life is almost at an end. I am the only
thing holding her here and I am not a patient man."

Max felt Michael's anger spike and knew his control had snapped, he grabbed his arm in an
effort to stop him lashing out. "Michael don't, remember, he's got Maria."

Lysus took an involuntary step back at Max's words and Michael took sadistic pleasure in
the fact.

"Yes, you kill me and she dies Michael, never forget that."

Michael grunted but remained silent as he struggled for control. When Max was satisfied
that he wasn't going to vaporise the other alien, he released his arm and steered the
conversation in a more useful direction. "What does this artefact look like?"

Lysus narrowed his eyes at Michael briefly before focusing on the question, "It is a small
metallic like disk, only two inches in diameter. A small, insignificant thing really."

"If it's so insignificant then why do you want it? What does it do?" Max searched his
mind but with growing despair could not remember anything remotely like what he was
describing.

"It is of no concern of yours what it does. Know only that I want it and will do anything
to have it."

Michael took a menacing step towards Lysus and their eyes met, "Whatever if is, if you
don't let Maria go you'll never get your hands on it, I'll make sure of that." Lysus glared
at him and something ferocious and primal passed between them.

Max stood apart from them and observed their interaction. It was as Maria had said,
there seemed to be something personal going on here. When Lysus looked at Michael
his eyes burned with a fanatical light of barely suppressed rage. There was history here,
something had happened between them in their past life, perhaps something related to
his capture and subsequent death. Max wasn't sure what but he intended to find out.

"You can try but remember this, there are plenty more where she came from." His voice
was low and dangerous and Max swallowed the sudden lump of fear that crawled its way
up his throat. Against his will an image came to him of Maria's hospital room, but instead
of his blonde haired friend, he saw spread out across the sterile sheets the long silky
brown hair and fine gentle features of Liz.

He suppressed a shudder and looked over at Michael. He was standing there silently, and
Max knew as well as he did that there was nothing more they could say. He had them well
and truly over a barrel.

At their silence Lysus smiled cruelly and turned to take a step away, "Now that that is
settled I suggest you get busy. I will give you two days to find the disk. I'll be in
touch to arrange the exchange."

Michael and Max stood and watched him turn and disappear into the darkness. They both
remained where they were for several minutes, neither sure what to do now that the initial
confrontation was over.

Max glanced at his friend and surrogate brother, "I suppose we'd better go and fill the
others in on what happened."

Michael seemed not to hear him at first but after a moments hesitation he turned without
a word and headed back towards the front doors of the cafe.

Max stood there in the dark and watched him wrench open the doors and stride inside, his
pain abundant and clear. It was difficult to take and he wondered not for the first time
if Michael would survive this. If they couldn't find this disk ... Max let that thought fall
away. He sighed tiredly and he feared.

He feared for them all.

"… pain drifts to days,
turns to nights,
and slowly we'll subside …"

Lysus walked away from the alien themed restaurant rather pleased with how his
encounter with the Royals had gone. He'd decided that the time had finally come
to confront them and things had gone perfectly to plan. He'd left them ill at ease,
confused and anxious, which was exactly how he wanted them. He would have
liked to stretch it out a little more but the human girl would only last so long and
he did, after all, have more important things to do.

Thinking on it, he thought it was rather ironic that he'd come here completely
occupied with constructing the device, only to find in searching for the remaining
piece the one thing above all else that had kept him going all these years. For so
long he'd wanted nothing else but to make those that had destroyed his life pay,
and now he had been handed that very opportunity.

He had known that the key to the machine had been sent away most likely with
the re-engineered Royals, and even though they'd denied all knowledge of it (and
he was inclined to believe them), what little evidence he had pointed to it being
here, and besides, he had searched for it everywhere else.

It was perhaps pertinent now, he thought, to remind himself of his ultimate goal. For
although he'd taken the girl to exact his revenge for times since passed, he'd always
had as his primary focus the discovery of the ancient's knowledge and power. He'd
spent the better part of his years researching and by chance had stumbled upon a
barely legible reference to the device. Since then, he'd made it his life's work and he
now stood on the edge of a new age, one that he would create. He would have such
power that no one would dare oppose him. He would be a God.

Lysus smiled to himself as he walked further into the darkness, he would complete his
work and finish the machine and when he did, everything would be as it should. His
smile turned sour and his eyes glittered with unholy light. He would use every element
at his disposal to ensure it, but first, he'd watch them burn. Every last one of them.

Max entered the restaurant and stopped short when the door to the staff area
opened and their friends filed through. He looked at them in question and his sister
looked down her dainty nose at him and responded. "We heard everything, we
decided that we couldn't just sit around in Liz's room waiting for you so we hid in
the alley and listened in on your conversation."

Max scowled in annoyance, "Isabel, I thought we agreed that you would go upstairs
and leave Lysus to us. What were you thinking? Anything could have happened to
you."

Isabel sighed dramatically, "Oh Max, relax, nothing happened and now you don't have
to worry about filling us in on what was said. We heard it all."

Max gave Michael a long suffering look and moved over to settle himself down next
to his friend.

"So what now?" Tess asked as she found herself a seat and looked questioningly at
Max.

Max glanced in her direction and sighed, he was really getting tired of being the one
everybody looked to in times of crisis. Right then he felt far older then he should
have.

"I don't know, I have to say I'm a bit surprised about this metallic disk thing. I
have absolutely no idea what he's talking about or where to even begin looking for
it. Do you Tess?"

Tess looked thoughtful for a moment then shook her head, "No, other then the bits
and pieces I've already shown you, there's nothing else I know of that was sent
here with us. Maybe Nasedo knows of it, I wonder where he is?"

Michael sat quietly and stared at his hands as they gripped the back of the chair he
was sitting on. He was confused, exhausted, and frustrated almost beyond
endurance. They'd finally seen their enemy in the flesh and he'd stupidly let the
opportunity pass by without finding out anything remotely useful. He didn't know
what this metallic disk was all about, but he suspected that Lysus was toying with
them. If what Maria had told them was true, his reason for being here in the first
place was to finish them all off.

He had known in the back of his mind though that there was something else
going on. He just wasn't sure this ancient artefact had anything to do with it. He
sighed and rubbed his eyes tiredly, he couldn't think straight, he needed to rest.
Although he hated to waste the precious hours in sleep, he knew that he was little
good to Maria in his current state.

"I don't know whether Lysus is sending us on a wild goose chase or not, and right
now I'm so tired I can't think through the situation clearly." He paused to look around
the room at his friends, "But whether he is or not, we have little choice but to go
with what he wants. He's holding all the cards, he's got Maria and until we figure
out a way to release her, we can't take the chance with her life. Whatever this
disk is, for whatever purpose he wants it, we're going to find it."

Michael stared at each of them until he was satisfied he had their agreement then
stood tiredly and headed for the front doors of the restaurant. "I'm going home
to rest for a few hours, let's regroup tomorrow morning and start looking for it.
Max, call me." He didn't turn around and wait for acknowledgement, but simply
walked out and disappeared into the night.

Max settled back into his chair and regarded his sister, "Michael has the right idea
Is, we should head home so you can get some sleep."

Isabel nodded and stifled a yawn, "Yeah, sleep sounds wonderful. I'm totally
wiped out."

Max nodded and stood up, preparing to leave. "Ok, then we'll all turn in for the
night and meet back at Michael's around eight?" At the combined nods of all
he grabbed his keys from his pocket and took Isabel's arm, leading her towards
the front of the restaurant. He was a step away from the doors when a small,
quiet voice stopped him.

"Max. What are we going to do if we can't find it?" Liz spoke clearly, but her
voice was low and worried.

Max paused at the doors and turned to look at her. He searched her dark eyes
for a moment and saw the intense worry reflected in her gaze. He swallowed
his immediate feeling of defeat and recalled to mind Michael's determined look
moments ago. "We'll find it Liz, if it exists, we'll find it."

Liz stared at him a moment longer then lowered her eyes and nodded once.
She wasn't convinced, he could tell, but for the moment she was allowing herself
the luxury of belief. He felt the added weight of her faith settle on his shoulders
and he shrugged it off with renewed vigour. They would fix this. One way or
another, they would.

"Come on Is, let's go home."

Isabel nodded, they said their goodbyes, then left.
