“I didn’t want to”.
“I wish I hadn’t, but I did”.
“He would have told you what I did and I couldn’t let that happen”.
“I didn’t mean to, his brain was just so weakened by the mindwarp”.
“None of this matters now”.
The words replayed themselves through Isabel’s mind. She had waited for Max at the entrance of the cave and listened, in horror, to his confrontation with Tess.
“None of this matters now”. “None of this matters now”. The words echoed like a broken record and didn’t stop.
It had been her. Isabel’s “friend”. She’d done this. She’d mindwarped Alex and made him go and decode her stupid destiny book. So she could go home. So she could turn us over to the enemy and rule with Max’s son.
“None of this matters now”.
Max had sent Tess and his child home. That was his decision. He used the granolith, our only way back to Antar. So that he could save his son; he sent Tess away, unpunished.
“None of this matters now”.
It’s now been over a month. Max’s son should have been born. And Max and the others are no closer to finding a way to get him back than when they started.
“None of this matters now”
Larek, using Brody’s body, came to see Max today. He said the child had indeed been born, but Khivar had rejected him as the heir. He also said Tess was dead and his people had brought the child to his planet for safety.
“None of this matters now”.
Max will be relentless now. I really don’t care. Does that sound cold? I don’t mean to be. But I’m glad she’s dead. And I’m sorry, but I can’t love the boy. I was happy at first, before I knew everything, but now…. I will accept him; after all he is my nephew. But I can never love him. Tess was his mother. Tess killed Alex.
