Chapter 1
Maxwell Phillip Evans sat at his kitchen table. Tons of books, papers and broken pencils littered the table and the floor around it. He sat in front of his lap top, fiercely typing, his brow creased in consentration.
Only a week into his sophomore year at UNM, he already had two papers due at the end of the week and a ton of work to do in calculus.
At nineteen Max came right out of high school and landed a job at a local museum. He spent his enire summer working hard to move into his new dorm room, eager to get away from his contolling, hot headed father.
His father was always pressuring Max to go to law school and join him at his firm. But Max always refused and because of that, it caused a major dent in their relationship.
Phillip Evans wasn't what you would call the world's greatest father. He was a strict person who'd do anything to better himself, including blackmailing his own son.
His phone rang and he reached across the table to the phone with one hand, while typing with the other.
"Hello?" He said once he retrieved the phone. He placed it between his shoulder and ear so that he could continue typing.
"Just calling to check up on things." A deep, cold voice said, putting a heavy emphasis on 'things'.
'Well speak of the devil' He thought.
"Hello to you to dad. I'm fine and how are you?" He said sarcastically as he got up to refill his mug with coffee.
"Don't talk to me that way Maxwell!" He bellowed. "Have you no respect for your father?"
'No. Not really' He wanted to say.
"That I do father dearest." He said instead in a British accent. He loved pushing his father to the limit.
"That's the type of shit that'll get you no where Maxwell."
Max could just picture the steam coming out of his fathers ears. He fought to hide his smile as he leaned against the kitchen counter, sipping on his coffee.
"If you're wondering, like I know you are, yes I'm still with Tess. And yes I'm treating her well."
"Good."
Just as if on cue, Tess came strolling through the door.
"Hi Maxie." She cooed.
Max raised an eyebrow as she sauntered drunkenly into the kitchen. It was barely five in the afternoon and she was already drunk? Her clothes were a mess. Her shirt was wrinkled and inside out. Her blond curls were mashed crazily to her head. Her lipstick and makeup was smeared all over her face and Max knew that she had been fooling around with another guy. But he didn't care, it wasn't like he loved her anyway.
"Is that Tess I hear?" His father asked.
"Unfortunately." Max sighed.
Tess giggled uncontrollably, her drunken mind thinking that he was joking. She leaned against him, leaning her head up to give him a kiss. He chose that moment to bring his mug to his lips and take a sip.
"Your funny Maxie." She said as she moved away from him and sat at the table. She started to mess with the papers there. Max grabbed her hand, leading her to the couch.
"Max, don't fuck this up for me or I'll pull my funding." He threatened.
Max, sighed. "I know dad, I'm not going to break up with her." He said, staring at the drunken nightmare that was Tess.
Max had actually found her attrative when he first met her. Not that she was ugly now. She was beautiful in fact. Any guy would kill for a girl like Tess. Her silky, blond curls fell just below her shoulders, framing her flawless face. Her crystal blue eyes and her full, pouty lips were sure to turn the head of every guy. And most girls would kill for her curvy figure.
Yes she was beautiful, but Max could have sworn that she was a demon child.
"Damn straight you're not going to break up with her. Now, I have to go. I'll check in later." He hung up with out another thought.
"Yeah. Bye dad. I guess I'll talk to you later. Love you too." He said to the dial tone. He rolled his eyes and sat the phone down, returning back to his work.
How he wished that he could put his father in his place. If he wasn't paying for more than half of his college tuition, Max doubted that he and his father would ever speak.
Tess was another reason Max resented his father. Tess's father was a millionare, on his way to becoming a billionare. Mr. harding is a client of Phillip's. And whatever Mr. harding's daughter wants, she gets. And unfortunately, Tess wanted Max. So in order to keep his biggest client, Phillip blackmailed Max into being with Tess. If she complained about Max or he broke up with her and it wasn't mutual, then Max wouldn't be able to afford school.
So in order to go to college, he had to put up with Tess's bratty ways, just until he graduated and got a real job.
Or until he strangled her.
But that was illegal, so he had to go with the former.
"Maxie...." Tess whined from the couch
"Yes Tess." He said, trying desperately to hide his irritation.
"Aren't you going to talk to me." She said with a pout.
"I have work to do." He said, not taking his eyes off the screen.
She stood and stumbled to him, sitting in his lap. She leaned in and nibbled on his neck.
"Tess....."
"Yes Maxie?" She cooed.
He placed his hands on her shoulders and pushed her away. "Look. I... have... to... study. Do.... you.... understand?" He said slowly.
She looked bewildered for a while before giggling and slapping his chest lightly. "Maxie, come on. Let's have some fun." She squeaked as she grabbed his hand and tried to pull him to his feet.
'Was she even listening to anything I said or is she really that mentally stupid?'
Pouting when he resisted, she stomped her foot and crossed her arms in front of her chest. "You always got your nose in that damned lap top and not paying me any attention!!" Max turned back to the lap top.
"I spent all last week with you. I have to work now."
"Fine Maxie!!" She stomped over to the couch, reaching for her purse and pulling out her cell phone. "Do what you want!! I'll just make a little phone call to your father and see what he has to say about this."
He jumped out of his chair, grabbing the phone out of her hand. "Okay, okay. Just....Just let me work for another hour and then we can do something okay?" He said as he seductively ran his finger across her cheek.
She smirked, knowing she had him wrapped around her little finger. "Okay Maxie. One hour. Then you can take me shopping." She kicked off her shoes and propped her feet on the coffee table, flipping on the television.
Yep. She had him wrapped around her little finger.
