Title: Postponing Forever
Author: Emma (aka Emz80m)
Category: AU M/L
Rating: ADULT
Disclaimer: I don't own Roswell or any of it's characters I just love them.

Authors Note: Okay everyone this is an idea that i've been working on. I dont think that this fic will end up being very long but lets just see what happens and where the story takes us. I have a bit of this read and most of the storyline worked out but who knows what might pop up unplanned.

Summery: Max Evan’s and Liz Parker are best friends who are in love, but they make a decision to postpone forever.

Prologue

‘You’re so beautiful’ Max whispered in her ear as they danced to the soft tunes of the final song at their senior prom. It still felt a little surreal to Liz that she was there, in the arms of her best friend and the man she knew she would love for the rest of her life.

‘Thank you’ she blushed which caused Max to chuckle it never ceased to amaze him that she could still blush when he complimented her.

To the outside world, the people they had gone to school with everyday Max Evans and Liz Parker were just two best friends dancing. They weren’t a couple; in fact the two of them had both been in relationships with other people until a few weeks before prom.

But as Max moved Liz around in his arms on the dance floor they both knew they weren’t just two friends sharing the most wonderful night of their life together, it was just so much more than that.

‘Come on’ he whispered to her as the final notes of the song faded out. He took her hand and began to lead her outside to where the limousine he had organized for the night would be waiting. They had started their night with dinner at Chez Pierre with their closest friends Michael, Maria, Alex and Isabel who were all couples, before coming to Prom and Max had no plans for the night to end anytime soon.

‘Where are we going?’ Liz asked him as they climbed into the limousine.

‘It’s a surprise’ he smiled back before leaning into leave a soft kiss on the corner of her mouth.

‘I like surprises’ she whispered huskily.

‘I know you do’ he smirked as his head leaned back into to meet hers.

The first touch of their lips was tentative, they had kissed before but tonight it meant so much more.

Max gently caressed his lips against hers before pulling her lower lip into his mouth. Liz wasted no time plunging her tongue into his mouth after that action and the kiss instantly turned more passionate. Before long Max had pulled Liz onto his lap where the kiss continued, the two of them only stopping long enough to breathe.

‘Sir, we’re here’ the driver informed them when they had reached their destination and although Max was reluctant to stop the drug inducing kisses with Liz he was excited to move them to a more private location and see her reaction to the surprise he had planned.

Most of the “couples” at West Roswell would be staying in the suites at Country Club that night where Max had no doubt there would be a lot of drinking, drugs and sex, things he certainly didn’t want to be involved in when he spent the night with his heart. So after remembering Liz mention how much she wanted to stay here before he had decided to book a room there.

After getting out of the car Max offered a hand to Liz and helped her out. He wasn’t disappointed when he heard her gasp when she realised where had had brought her.

‘The B&B’ she cried. For as long as she could remember it had always been Liz’s fantasy to spend the night in a B&B, and since it was Liz’s fantasy it was Max’s goal to make it come true.

Max thanked the driver before moving to stand behind Liz and take her back into his arms; he would never forget how right she felt in them.

‘Thank you’ she whispered arching her neck for another kiss.

‘Anything for you El’ he told her, using the familiar name he had used for most of their lives.

Max led her slowly to their room, he had already been there earlier in the day to set everything up and drop off the bag that Maria had packed for Liz. He had wanted everything to be a surprise and Maria had been very helpful.

The room was covered in white and red rose petals when Liz entered and she couldn’t help but gasp again which made Max’s heart soar.

‘I can’t believe you did this’

‘Believe it’ Max replied happily, this was the reaction he had hoped for all along and it didn’t matter what happened between them tonight or in the future everything was worth it just to have this one perfect moment where every fantasy Liz had ever had came true.

Max removed his jacket and threw it over the chair before moving to pour them both a glass of champagne, all of a sudden he was completely nervous and he wasn’t sure why, this is El he told himself.

‘Thank you’ Liz smiled when he handed her the drink.

‘I have something for you’ he startled her then pulling out a long velvet box out from the bedside drawer.

Liz opened the box in excitement and almost cried when she saw what was inside. It was the most exquisite gold necklace she had ever seen. It was so delicate and hanging on it was half of a heart.

Liz looked up at Max with questioning eyes, which were full of tears ‘Where’s the other half?’ she asked him.

Standing up and coming to sit next to her Max removed the necklace that was hidden by his shirt and revealed the other half.

‘Here’ he whispered. ‘Because this is my heart and you have the other half of it’

Liz smiled at the words and finally allowed the tears of happiness that had gathered in her eyes to fall.

‘I love you’ she whispered.

Max grinned ‘I love you too’ he replied before pulling her firmly into his arms.

Mouths sort out each other as dresses were delicately slipped down bodies and suits carefully removed. Both felt the need to be together desperately but they were also both aware that they had all the time in the world and this was something that they didn’t want to rush.

Max crawled up the bed naked ‘Are you sure?’’ he asked her.

‘Yes, I saved myself for you’ she declared.

‘Me too’ he replied and even though he had sometimes cursed his heart which had always stood in the way of him giving into his bodies need now he thanked it with everything he was. He was so glad that they had both waited so that their fist time would be with each other, it would mean so much more in fifty years when they looked back on the night.

Leaning down Max took one rosy nipple into his mouth sucking and biting it gently ‘Oh Max’ she moaned in response. His hand drifted down her body until he found her wet folds waiting for him, he entered a finger into her gently wanting to ensure that she was ready for him. He knew that she wasn’t new to foreplay; hell they’d done enough of it themselves over the years.

‘Max please’ she begged when he removed his finger, she couldn’t stand the teasing any longer she needed him badly. Unable to ignore her plea Max led his very hard cock to her core. He rubbed in against her a few times before he gently began to enter her.

‘Oh Liz your so tight’ he groaned.

‘Oh Max’ Liz moaned in delight as he filled her body.

When he reached her barrier he looked up and met her eyes, he saw that she was ready but he didn’t want to hurt her. ‘It’s yours’ she whispered.

‘I love you’ he told her.

‘I love you too’ she smiled back and with one thrust Max joined them completely.

Liz felt the tears spring to her eyes when the pain hit but it didn’t last long and soon she was able to enjoy the feeling of being filled with Max.

‘You ok?’ he asked.

She nodded in reply so slowly Max began to thrust in and out of her body.

‘Oh yes Max’ she moaned as their sweaty bodies glided against each other.

‘El’ he moaned ‘oh you feel so good, so good’

Liz moved her legs so that they were wrapped around his waist and the new position opened her up more and allowed Max to penetrate her deeper.

‘Oh god’ she cried out.

‘You like that baby’ Max asked her unable to hide the smile of pride that Liz was moaning because of him, for him.

‘Oh yes Max, oh harder baby’ she begged her nails digging into his back, but Max didn’t feel any of it he just felt and listened whilst he thrust in and out of her beautiful body driving them towards ecstasy.

‘MAXXX’ Liz cried out when she felt her orgasm take hold of her.

‘Oh Liz yes baby’ Max groaned feeling his balls tighten when Liz screamed his name as she came.

‘LIZZZ” he cried out when he couldn’t hold on any longer coming deep inside her leaving them both content and happy.

***

‘Are you sure your ok’ Max asked her again as they drove home.

Liz smiled and placed her hand over his on the gear stick ‘I’m wonderful’ she told him. Sure it hurt but not enough to stop them making love a second time the night before and then once again early this morning in the shower. The whole experience had been everything she had always hoped it would be.

‘Good’ he replied with a smile. He was sad that their time together was ending and that he would drop her home and then head to his own house.

‘So did you send of your acceptance to NYU?’ she asked him.

‘Yep’ he grinned in reply. Him and Liz had decided early on that they wanted to go to college together and they planned on sharing an apartment once they reached New York. The whole gang was heading there and Max couldn’t wait.

‘Great, I can’t wait to go apartment hunting’ Liz told him.

‘Oh god that’s the part I’m dreading’ he laughed as he pulled up out the front of the Crashdown. He quickly jumped out and helped her out before grabbing her bag and walking her to the door.

‘Thank you for the most wonderful night of my life’ she smiled up at him her hand unconsciously fingering the necklace he had given her.

‘Your welcome El’ he told her before leaning down to give her a soft kiss.

‘I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning ok?’ he told her then before taking a few steps backwards.

‘Cant wait’ she told him and with one final wave she entered her apartment and Max took of in the jeep.

***

Graduation – 2 weeks later

‘Hey’ Liz smiled as Max sat down across from her on the bench that they had ate lunch on for the past three years.

‘You ok?’ he asked.

‘Yeah just remembering’ she shrugged but it wasn’t the only thing that was bothering her, she had felt Max pulling away from her for the past two weeks and the distance was starting to scare her. After what had happened between them she thought it would have brought them closer.

‘I can’t believe it’s all over’ he told her.

‘I know’ Graduation had come and gone and now they had a party to attend at the Crashdown that Liz’s parents were throwing for her.

‘I wanted to talk to you before we went to the party’ he told her then.

Liz nodded; she had been waiting for this.

‘You know I love you right El?’

Liz nodded again, she did. ‘I love you too’ she told him her hand once again going to her necklace, something he noticed she did a lot since he had given it to her.

‘And I know that the love I feel for you is the kind of love that is forever’ he confessed then, but it didn’t scare or surprise Liz because it was exactly how she felt too.

‘I feel the same way Max’

Max smiled and reached for her hand ‘El’ he started his eyes pained.

‘What is it Max?’ she asked worried.

‘I’m not ready for forever’ he whispered with his eyes closed, he didn’t want to see her face when the words hit her, he didn’t want to see how much he hurt her. It had been on his mind for the past week. He knew he was just scared but then he also knew he should be. He was 18 and he had met the women he knew he was going to be with forever. That didn’t scare him what did was that he hadn’t experience enough of life yet and he didn’t want that to be a problem between them in the future which he knew it could be.

When he opened his eyes he wasn’t prepared for what he saw in front of him. Liz had tears sliding down her face and her big brown eyes looked shattered.

‘I know that your it for me El, but I want the chance to experience life on my own before we start our life together’ he rushed to tell her.

‘What do you mean?’ she cried.

‘God I’ve totally stuffed this up. El you’re my best friend and I know that one day in the future I’m going to ask you to marry me, I love you but I’m not ready for that yet. I want to postpone it’ he told her.

‘You want to postpone forever?’ she asked confused.

‘Yes’ Max replied.

‘And what will that entail?’ she asked curiously.

‘I still want us to share an apartment together when we go away but I think we should go back to the way we were before Prom’ he explained thinking about their best friends with benefits act that they had going on.

‘So you want do date other people?’ she asked horrified.

‘Don’t you?’ Max asked her.

‘Why? I know you’re the one for me’ she told him.

‘I know and I know you’re the one for me too but don’t you want to experience everything life has to offer? Do you really want me to be your only lover for the rest of your life?’ he asked her.

Liz thought about the question and the answer that instantly sprang to mind was Yes but she was also aware that Max obviously wasn’t in the same place that she was.

‘You want to make love to other girls?’ she asked hurt.

‘I don’t know, maybe’ he told her honestly.

‘And if I say no?’ she asked.

‘T-then I wont do it, I mean I love you but’ he started.

‘But your not ready for forever’ she finished for him.

‘Yeah’

Silence ensued then and Max was ready to tell her to forget he even brought it up when her voice startled him.

‘Okay’ she told him.

‘Okay?’ Max asked making sure he heard her right.

‘Okay, we can postpone forever it’s not like we really had started anything here anyway’ she shrugged. Max was slightly hurt the way she had brushed aside what they had developed between them since Prom.

‘Are you sure?’ he questioned. Liz put a smile on her face convinced that maybe this was what Max needed to be ready for forever.

‘Sure. We’ll date and we’ll fuck other people’ she grinned. Let’s see if Max Evans could really take it.

Max cringed at what he thought sounded like excitement in Liz’s voice ‘Liz’ he sighed.

‘No your right Max. Your not ready for forever and I think your solution is workable’ she smiled.

‘So we’re postponing forever’ she put out her hand as a gesture for Max to shake.

‘We’re postponing forever’ he shook.

A/N: Wow :D I am totally overwhelmed by the feedback on this fic, thank you so much everyone.

So, I am definetely going to continue. Also, just wanted to answer some questions a few of you asked. Max and Liz havent been a couple in the past they've just been best friends who knew they had feelings for each other. Regardless of the fact Max wasnt ready for a relationship Liz wasnt either but they both knew that they wanted to loose their virginity to each other which is why they did on Prom.

I know Max's idea might seem harsh but he actually does have good intentions but you'll have to continue reading to find out what they are.

Anyway i hope you like the next part, dont be too harsh on Max! :D

Part 1

Three and a half years later

Liz was sitting on the lounge pouring over her study notes when Max walked in the door. He seemed surprised to see her there.

‘Hey’ he smiled

Removing her glasses ‘hey yourself’ she smiled back taking the opportunity to look him over. She felt as though she had hardly seen him the past three months. They had both been so busy with exams and work that they didn’t get any quality time together at all anymore.

‘I thought you had a date?’ he asked her then.

shit Liz cursed under her breath, she should have remembered that Max had a great memory for things like that especially when it came to who she was spending her time with ‘Yeah I do, but it’s not to later’ she told him.

‘Oh okay’ he smiled ‘I have to work tonight so I better get going’ he told her before walking off into the bathroom.

Thirty minutes later Max was at Burn the nightclub where he did bar work with Michael.

‘Hey’ Michael greeted his friend, he felt like he hadn’t seen him outside of work for months now and not for the first time wondered what was going on with him.

‘Hey’ Max replied glumly. He had been feeling like shit for days now but after seeing Liz he felt twice as bad.

The place wasn’t busy yet so Michael took the opportunity to question him about what was up.

‘I’ve really fucked up Mike’ he replied.

‘What have you done?’ he asked.

Max looked up ‘I’ve met someone’ he told him.

‘What do you mean you’ve met someone?’ Michael asked confused. All the gang new everything about Max and Liz and postponing forever, none of them really understood it but they accepted it.

‘I’ve been seeing someone for the past three months and I don’t know how to tell Liz’ he explained.

‘Oh’ Michael frowned ‘what the hell are you doing Maxwell? You have this top chick at home who loves you to death why are you wasting your time with these bimbo’s’ he bitched at his friend. Michael was also more than aware from his relationship with Maria that Liz wasn’t as into the whole dating other people thing as Max was, and he knew if Liz found out about Max breaking the rules of the agreement it would shatter her.

‘I don’t know’ Max sighed ‘and that’s not all’ he added.

‘What else could there be?’

‘You know that girl that Liz and Maria are always bitching about?’ Max asked.

‘Yeah Selena or whatever’ he shrugged, he usually tuned out when they started gossiping.

‘Serena’ Max corrected.

‘Please tell me your not?’ Michael demanded then. When Max didn’t move to deny it Michael just shook his head.

‘Fuck’ he cursed.

‘I know’ he told him knowing what his friend was thinking.

‘End it’ Michael told him then.

‘I know that’s what I should do’ Max replied.

‘Then why don’t you?’ Michael asked.

‘It’s different with her, I feel things’ he told him.

‘What do you mean you feel things?’ Michael asked incredulous. There was no way his friend was standing here telling him that he was going to give up his forever for a feeling. Even though Max had casually dated over the past three and a half years things with him and Liz had always been great.

‘I don’t know’ Max cried. Michael was about to respond when his girlfriend made her presence known at the bar.

‘Hey’ Michael greeted her leaning over to give her a peck on the lips.

‘Hey yourself Space boy’ she smiled back ‘hey stranger’ she turned to Max then.

‘Hi Ria’ he smiled before moving away from her to take care of some people that were now waiting to be served.

Three hours later the place had picked up but it still wasn’t busy for a Friday night. Max was leaning against the bar sipping on a cherry coke when he felt someone reach up and place their wet lips on his neck. ‘Hey sexy’ she whispered.

Max smiled he would recognize that voice and that smell anywhere he was just surprised that she was there and he realised how much he had missed her.

Turning around ‘hey yourself’ he replied his eyes taking in how sexy she looked tonight. Oh and did she look hot, Max couldn’t remembered the last time he had seen anyone ooze sexiness like she did right now in her very short and tight black leather miniskirt which was accompanied by a pair of knee high boots and a small red tank top.

‘Wow’ he mumbled.

‘Thank you’ she grinned she was very happy that the outfit had the desired effect.

‘Are you on your break?’ she asked then. Max shook his had unable to form words his eyes still glued to her body.

‘Can you take a break and come dance with me?’ she asked.

Max finally raised his eyes to meet hers then when he realised she has asked him something, the thought of being on the dace floor with her body grinding against his was the best offer he had in three months he realised.

‘Let me ask’ he smiled.

‘Hey Liz’ Michael smiled.

‘Hey Mike’ she smiled back.

Less than two minutes later Max was back with a grin that told the story ‘I’ve got half an hour’ he told her letting her grab his hand and lead them to the dance floor.

The minute they stepped foot on the dance floor Max wasted no time pulling Liz’s body flush against his own, enjoying the feel of having her with him. He was beyond confused right now. Everything about being with Liz was as perfect as it always was but he knew that he had to tell her what had been going on in the past three months. Michael was right he was being an idiot. He hadn’t meant to get involved with Serena it had happened by accident and by the time he realised that she was the girl Liz and Maria disliked so much, he had already gone too far.

He had known he was breaking the rules of his and Liz’s agreement, they had decided that they were needed if it was going to work and some of them were just required, like no sex with anyone other than each other in the apartment they shared. No sex with anyone without a condom except each other. That they would tell each other if they had sex with someone else. No bringing dates to group outings, and most importantly no dating anyone for more than two months. They had all been easy until Serena and he wasn’t quite sure why.

He hadn’t done anything different with her then he had with any of the others but for some reason he seemed to be more attracted to her and had eventually given in after a few months and slept with her. She was the first women other than Liz that he had ever slept with and he had felt guilt as hell ever since.

Liz turned around and grinded her ass into Max’s crotch smiling in delight when she found him hard for her. Max spun her around and pulled her to him before leaning down to thrust his tongue into her mouth. She was driving him absolutely crazy with her torture on his body.

‘What happened to your date?’ Max asked her.

‘Oh I guess you could say it didn’t work out’ she lied ‘so I decided to come here and meet up with Maria and I’m glad I did’ she smiled.

‘Me too’ he told her and he did. It had been so long since they had done this he realised.

‘I want you’ she whispered when they pulled apart from their heated kiss.

‘El’ he groaned before allowing his hands to cup her ass and pulling her more firmly against him.

‘Hey lovebirds’ Maria interrupted them with a smirk on her face, she was glad to see Liz smiling again she hadn’t seen enough of it in the last three months and it also appeared that operation ‘Starting Forever’ was off to a nice start.

‘Yes Maria?’ Liz asked sending a mock glare at her friend for interrupting.

‘Marcus told me to tell you that you can finish up for the night Max because it’s not very busy’ she told them.

‘Thanks Maria’ he smiled. He pulled away from Liz and grabbed her hand ‘Well we’ve gotta jet so we’ll see you later’ he quickly told her before him and Liz began walking quickly towards the exit, both with the same destination in mind.

***

Maria was still chuckling when she sat back down at the bar.

‘What’s so funny?’ Michael asked.

‘Oh just how quickly Max and Liz fled this place when I told Max that Marcus said he could go, there’s gonna be some screaming in that apartment tonight’ she explained.

‘He left with Liz?’ Michael queried.

‘Yeah’ Maria told him. Michael frowned, what did Max think he was doing? The only thing that should be happening in that apartment tonight between him and Liz was a lot of talking and most likely a lot of groveling, and maybe then Max could think about make up sex.

‘Okay Space Boy spill’ Maria demanded when she saw the look on Michaels face.

Michael sighed he knew he should keep his mouth shut but he and Maria didn’t keep secrets from each other anymore. It was the only way that they could keep their relationship on track so most of their friends new if you told one of them something you were pretty much telling them both something.

‘You can’t tell Liz’ he said.

‘Michael’ she warned.

‘I’m serious Maria it’s none of our business and we should stay out of it’ he told her.

‘Stay out of what?’

‘Max has been seeing someone for the past three months’ he told her.

‘What! That’s against the rules’ Maria gasped. See everyone new the rules that’s why he couldn’t understand how Max had managed to break them.

‘I know’ Michael sighed.

‘Is he going to tell her?’ she wanted to know.

‘I guess’ he shrugged, he hoped so that’s for sure.

‘Man I can’t believe this’ she sighed. Liz was going to be devastated when she found out.

‘It will be ok, they’ll work things out it’s Max and Liz’ Michael tried to reassure her.

‘You don’t understand Michael’ she sighed ‘Liz is going to tell Max tonight that she doesn’t want to see other people anymore, she’s sick of playing these dating games with Max and she’s going to tell him’

‘Oh’ Michael said this could turn out really bad.

‘Yeah oh’ Maria agreed.

Part 2

As soon as the apartment door was shut behind them Max pushed Liz into the door and grinded his body against hers.

‘Hurry Max’ she begged her hands flying to the zipper of his black pants where she unbuckled and unzipped them like an expert, his shirt had already been unbuttoned in the elevator on the way up. The entire drive home had been spent teasing each other to the point they were both ready to explode.

‘Are you ready for me baby?’ Max moaned as he ran a hand up her thigh, he expected to come into contact with the lace of her panties but instead his hand plunged into her dark curls.

‘Oh god you’ve been naked under their all night’ he groaned.

‘Yes’ she giggled but the giggles soon subsided when she felt Max’s hard cock pressing against her opening.

‘Oh Yes Max’ she moaned ‘please’ she begged.

‘You want this?’ he asked her rubbing himself against her; there was nothing more beautiful than Liz Parker when she looked totally ravaged.

‘Yes’ she moaned and with that Max entered her in one long thrust.

‘Oh god’ he groaned at the feel of her tight walls around him. He thrust in and out of her long and hard. Nothing in the world ever compared to making love to Liz, he thought then.

‘Oh fuck Max’ she moaned.

‘Oh you feel so fucking good El, so good’ he moaned in reply.

‘Harder baby’ she begged.

Max picked up their rhythm and began thrusting into Liz with everything he had, he could feel her walls tightening around him and knew she was about to go over the edge so reaching down between them he gave her clit a pinch.

‘Oh fuck yes’ she screamed.

‘Oh yes baby’ Max cried back as his own release swept over him.

‘Oh god that was awesome’ Liz told him.

‘Uh huh’ he agreed still trying to catch his breath.

‘I love you’ she whispered.

‘Hmm me too’ was Max’s reply.

When he felt as though his legs could hold them up he walked them towards his bedroom and laid her gently on the bed.

‘I’ve missed you’ she whispered as they lay together in the dark.

Max was a little confused about what she meant ‘I’m always here for you’ he told her.

‘It doesn’t feel like it lately’ she whispered back.

‘What do you mean?’ he asked her turning on his side and propping himself up on an elbow to look at her.

‘It’s just with school, exams and work I feel like I’ve barely seen you in the past three months and I’ve missed you’ she told him.

‘I know but school with be done in a month or so’ he told her feeling completely guilty because it hadn’t been just school and work that had kept him apart from her. Yes they had certainly been the major contributing factors but he had also spent some of his spare time with Serena when he could have been with his Liz.

‘I need to go to the bathroom but I wanted to talk to you when I come back about something’ Liz told him then jumping up quickly.

‘Okay’ he smiled as he watched her cute little ass swaying as she walked out the door and felt himself harden again.

Whilst she was gone Max heard his cell phone going off in the pocket of his jeans and leant down to retrieve it.

‘Hello’ he answered.

‘Hey honey’ the voice replied and caused Max to close his eyes in dread.

‘Hey’ he replied. He was just about to sit up when Liz came back into the room completely naked and climbed back on top of his body and laying her head against his chest.

‘Where are you?’ she asked him. Liz could hear the female voice and jealousy surged through her along with the need to stake her claim.

‘At home’ he replied trying to stifle a groan as Liz began to trail kisses up his chest.

‘Oh, I thought you were working tonight but I went to the club and they said you weren’t there’ she told him.

‘Y-Yeah I know it wasn’t very busy so Marcus let me go home’ he explained.

‘Are you ok?’ she asked

‘Um I’m kind of busy’ he moaned and Liz couldn’t stop herself from giggling at the way his voice sounded.

‘Who’s that?’ Serena asked jealously.

‘Oh that’s Liz the girl I live with’ he told her.

‘Oh’ she replied. ‘Why didn’t you come over after you got off?’ she whined. Was she always this clingy and whiny? he asked himself then.

‘I had some things to take care of, listen I cant really talk ok’ he told her then he looked up to find that Liz was frowning at him now, all the playfulness gone.

‘Oh ok I’ll talk to you tomorrow’ she said.

‘Yeah’ Max frowned his eyes never leaving Liz’s.

‘I love you Max’ she said causing Liz to gasp.

‘Um’ Max mumbled shocked ‘it’s ok Max’ Serena told him ‘I know you’re not ready to say it back yet’ she assured him.

‘Bye’ Max said quickly before hanging up the phone.

Liz rolled off Max until she was on the bed next to him. ‘W-Who was that?’ she asked him when he turned to her.

‘Um a- a girl I’ve been seeing’ he told her quietly.

‘W-who is she?’ she asked then instantly worried the night she had planned had taken a turn for the worse.

Max sat up and threw his legs over the side of the bed, turning his back on Liz and putting his head in his hands. He needed to gain some control and he couldn’t do that while he looked at the emotions crossing her face.

‘What was it that you wanted to talk about?’ he asked her.

Liz was startled at the subject change, if she didn’t know any better she would have thought Max was trying to keep something from her but her and Max didn’t have secrets or so she thought.

‘Y-You didn’t respond’ she blurted out then when realization finally hit her. He hadn’t been around for almost three months now and tonight was the first time in that three months that they had been intimate at all and worst of all he hadn’t replied.

‘Sorry?’ he asked confused.

‘I-I t-told you that I loved you earlier and you d-didn’t say it back’ she said her eyes filling with tears.

‘Oh El don’t cry please’ he begged ‘I’m sorry’ he told her.

‘What’s happening to us Max?’ she sobbed.

‘You’ve obviously been avoiding me the last three months if you’ve had time to date, your getting calls from other women in the middle of the night who tell you that they love you and expect to hear it back a-and y-your not wearing your h-heart’ she cried.

Max’s hand instantly reached to his throat to confirm that she was right he wasn’t wearing it. He had taken it off earlier in the week when he had a date with Serena and he had forgotten to put it back on. He immediately reached over to his dresser and picked it up intending on putting it back on.

‘D-don’t bother Max obviously you don’t mean it anymore’ she said quietly. ‘I wanted to talk to you tonight because I cant do this anymore. I was going to tell you that I’m sick of missing you, I’m sick of not waking up next to you every morning but mostly I’m sick of sharing you. I cant, no Max I wont do this anymore but I guess I don’t need to tell you that’ she whispered between sobs as she wrapped a sheet around her and began to get off the bed.

‘El please’ he begged he didn’t know what was happening exactly but he didn’t like it. Her words had hit him hard and he wanted to tell her that he wanted all those things too, maybe that had been why he had allowed himself to get involved with Serena in the first place.

Liz stopped ‘How long?’ she asked him.

‘How long what?’

‘How long have you been having a relationship with someone else, I mean that’s what it isn’t it. She seems to think it’s serious, serious enough to tell you that she loves you and she obviously doesn’t know anything about me’ she cried.

‘Oh god El it’s not like that’ he told her. ‘I-I never meant for it to get out of control but it did and I’m sorry’

‘How long?’ she asked again.

‘Three months’ he told her. The moment his answer reached her ears Liz broke down in renewed sobs because the one thing she had worried about everyday for the past three and half years whilst she lived this charade with Max had just become a reality. The only difference was that it hurt twice as much as she ever dreamed.

‘W-who is she?’ she made herself ask.

‘Don’t do this El’ he begged. She still hadn’t turned back around but he could see her body shaking and hear her crying.

‘Who?’ she asked again.

‘Serena Michaels’ he whispered.

He watched in horror then as Liz spun around and her hand reared out and slapped him hard across the face ‘How could you?’ she screamed. Liz hated Serena Michaels with a passion, the girl had done nothing but make several of Liz’s classes hell over the past four years and she had told Max her feelings about it on several occasions.

‘I didn’t mean for it to happen’ he whispered his hand going up to cover his face where she had slapped him. This was three times as worse as what he had expected during all the times he thought about her reaction when he told her he had broken the rules.

Shaking her head Liz turned back around and reaching up to around her neck she removed the necklace that Max had given her. She felt her heart break as she took it off.

Max gasped as she turned around and stepped forward and handed him the necklace that he had given her as a promise. He had given it to her because she had held his heart and as far as he was concerned she always would, he didn’t want to take it back he didn’t want his heart back from her.

‘I guess you have someone else to give this to now’ she whispered tears still running down her eyes.

‘No El please don’t do this’ he begged.

‘Y-You still didn’t say it’ she sobbed then ‘you only had to say one thing and you cant even do that, can you?’ she told him. It was clear as day he had no idea what she was talking about so unwilling to stay a minute longer she picked up her clothes and after allowing the sheet to drop away from her body she ran out of Max’s room and into her own.

Part 3

Max sat in his bedroom stunned for a few minutes before he quickly jumped up and ran to her room. He tried the door but found that it was locked ‘El please let me in?’ he begged. He needed to talk to her, to explain but most of all he needed to tell her he loved her because he did. That hadn’t changed.

He admitted that he was confused about his feelings for Serena but he was not confused about his feelings for Liz and she needed to know that.

No answer came from the room and after five minutes of knocking Max gave up and retreated to the living room where he buried in his head in his hands.

‘You fucking asshole’ Maria’s voice yelling at him as she slammed into the apartment startled him.

‘Maria what?’ he questioned her he had no idea why she was here.

‘How could you?’ she asked him then.

‘Liz called you?’ he asked.

‘Of course she did although I could barely understand a word she said because of how hard she was crying’

‘Oh god Ria I fucked up really bad’ he broke down then.

‘Yeah you did you asshole’ she told him. She felt no sympathy for him anymore. He had caused everything. It had been his idea to ‘postpone forever’ it had been him who had started dating and fucking other people and it had been him that had broken the rules.

‘I cant believe while she’s spent the last three months miserable missing you and making plans to talk to you about ending this bullshit charade that she’s hated since day one, you’ve been out falling in love with someone else’ she yelled.

‘Hey’ Max yelled back ‘I haven’t been out falling in love with other people, I love her and she’s been dating other people too you know’ he told her. He knew that he was completely in the wrong but it wasn’t as though Liz had told him that she was miserable with their arrangement. But you should have know his conscious told him.

Maria scoffed ‘oh yeah, you would think that. You really haven’t paid an ounce of attention to her for months have you?’ she said sarcastically.

‘What’s that supposed to mean, I might not have been here as much as I would have normally because of exams and stuff but’

‘She’s been lying for months Max’ Maria told him then ‘she hasn’t been out a date with anyone in over three months and she probably hasn’t slept with anyone else either’ she spat out angrily and watched as Max’s face turned pale.

‘And then to date Serena of all people considering how much she hates her’ she continued.

‘Liz doesn’t hate people Maria’ Max sighed leaning back into the couch and closing his eyes.

‘Oh doesn’t she?’ Maria replied sarcastically.

‘No, I mean I know she doesn’t seem to like Serena for some reason but’

‘For some reason?’ Maria roared ‘News flash moron, your girlfriend in a fucking bitch and believe me unlike you I’ve seen her in action. She has gone out of her way to make Liz’s life a living hell all because Liz is smarter and doing better in class than her’

Max looked shocked at her words and Maria realised that he had obviously never seen that side of the girl.

‘I didn’t mean for it to happen’ he whispered then.

‘Did you sleep with her?’ Maria asked then, she needed to know.

Max nodded his head sadly.

‘Slept or sleeping?’ she asked him then.

‘Only once’ he whispered disgusted with himself.
‘Why didn’t you just end it when you realised who she was?’ she asked then.

‘I don’t know’ he sighed ‘there is just something about her that drew me in’ he confessed.

‘You said you don’t love her well what do you feel for her?’ she asked.

‘To tell you the truth I’m not sure what it is’ he admitted

Shaking her head she turned her back on him and started towards Liz’s bedroom ‘Maria please tell her I’m so sorry and that I love her, only her’ he begged. His words caused Maria to stop and turn back around ‘Ok’ she agreed and then she was gone.

***

Max waited around the apartment all day for Liz to come out of her room but she never did. Maria came in and out bringing her food and anything that she needed but even she wouldn’t talk to Max about how Liz was or if she was going to talk to him.

Max sat watching the clock trying to decide what to do about the shift he had at the bar that night when there was a knock on the door. He didn’t want to go to the bar without working things out with Liz; he didn’t want to leave the apartment until they talked. He got up and answered it reluctantly and once he did he wish he hadn’t.

‘What do you want Valenti?’ he growled at the man on the other side. Kyle Valenti and Max Evans hated each other. Everything they did since they had been 12 years old had been a competition, one which Max usually came out of top of which is why Kyle had chased Liz for years, unsuccessfully. At first Max hadn’t been to worried about beating Kyle at sports or getting hotter chicks but that quickly changed when Kyle learned his weakness and went after Liz.

‘I’m here to pick up Liz’ he smirked. Max wanted to wipe the smug look of his face. Normally Max wasn’t a fighter but he would make the exception tonight because he had a lot of frustration to work out.

‘What do you mean, pick up Liz? She’s not going anywhere with you Valenti when are you going to get the message’ Max growled taking a step closer to the other man.

‘Kyle you’re here’ the sound of Liz’s voice startled him and he turned around to see her. He was shocked to say the least at what he saw. The Liz before him didn’t look like the girl that he had heard crying all night. She was dressed in a tight black dress with her hair pulled up and her makeup done with obvious intentions of going out he realised.

‘El’ he sighed in relief.

Liz ignored him and moved towards Kyle ‘Hi’ she smiled sweetly. A smile he knew Liz had never used when in the company of Kyle Valenti, or for Kyle Valenti.

‘Hey’ he replied ‘you ready?’

‘Yeah just let me get my jacket’ she replied.

Max’s mouth fell open in shock but he quickly came to his senses when Liz went off in search of her coat. He rushed to catch her and found her in her bedroom.

‘El what are you doing?’ he asked her.

‘Going on a date, what does it look like’ she snapped.

‘El you know how I feel about Kyle’ he groaned and the minute the words left his mouth he wished he could take them back, because if looks could kill he would be six feet under from the one Liz just gave him.

‘Well wait right there Max and I’ll get you fifty cents so that you can call someone who cares, maybe Serena?’ Liz told him before pushing past him and out of the room. Max wasted no time going after her and caught her right before she reached the door.

‘El’ he whispered in desperation.

Liz turned around when she heard the plea in his voice and for the first time since she came out of her room Max could tell how much she was hurting, he could see it reflected in her eyes ‘I love you baby’ he whispered and then reaching into his pocket he pulled out the necklace with the other side of his heart, the one she had returned the night before and he reached up to put it back around her neck.

Liz moved to object at first but when she saw the unshed tears in his eyes she gave in ‘this is yours, only yours’ he told her.

When he finished fastening it around her neck he took a step back and shoved his hands in his pockets. Hesitating for only second Liz moved to the door and accepted the arm Kyle offered her, closing the door behind her.

Realising that there was nothing that he could do about it, that he had brought everything that was happening upon himself Max picked up his own jacket and left the apartment for work.

***

‘Hey’ Michael greeted him when he joined him behind the bar.

‘Hey’ Max replied and the look on his face said it all.

‘So it didn’t go well?’ he stated.

‘Yeah you could say that, and because I’m such a fucking idiot she’s now out on a date with Kyle Valenti’ he told him.

‘Valenti? Your kidding me?’ Michael laughed

‘I don’t see what’s so funny Michael. My life is falling apart and all you can do is laugh’ he snapped.

‘It is funny man; Maria didn’t tell me that part. Hey an eye for an eye I say, she’ll feel a shit load better tomorrow after she’s fucked him’

Max’s head snapped up and he growled then ‘if Valenti lays a hand on her I swear to god I’ll kill him’ he told Michael.

‘No you wont, your going to take it like a man because you deserve it. Max, man Maria has told me a little about this Serena chick and some of the things she’s said and done to Liz, and I can understand why she hates her. If I was you I’d be thankful if fucking Kyle helps her get over it at all and she considers forgiving you’ he told him seriously.

‘When did my life get so out of control?’ he groaned.

‘Oh I’d say around the time you came up with this stupid idea to postpone forever’ Michael quipped sarcastically.

‘Get to work guys’ they heard their boss yell then. It was pretty busy that night considering how slow it was the night before.

About five people into the line though Max’s night suddenly got worse because standing in the line that he was serving he spotted Serena and he groaned.

Michael looked up from his spot next to Max and saw the girl at the end of the line waving enthusiastically, trying to get Max’s attention.

‘Please tell me that’s not her?’ Michael asked.

When Max didn’t reply Michael shook his head and laughed again.

‘What the fuck is so funny?’ Max asked

‘You kidding me right?’ Michael asked incredulously ‘please tell me you see it’ Michael said turning his eyes back to the petite brunette with brown eyes who struck quite a resemblance to a certain other brunette Max lived with.

‘See what?’ Max asked when he had a chance a couple of minutes later. By this stage Serena was now second in line.

‘Man she could be Liz’s twin’ Michael told him.

Part 4

Liz closed her eyes as she sat in the car with Kyle on their way to Burn. They had gone to dinner earlier at a nice restaurant where Liz picked at her food, and gulped down wine while she listened to Kyle talk about many of his sporting accomplishments. It was the first time she had ever allowed herself to be in the presence of Kyle Valenti by choice and she was questioning that decision now. Liz knew she had only called Kyle, who had chased her non stop for close to ten years to get back at Max, she also knew that if Kyle was aware of her reason he wouldn’t care either. His own motivation to date her was fairly similar.

She couldn’t help but let her mind wander to things they shouldn’t, like how she had ended up in the car on a date with Kyle Valenti, her soul mates worst enemy. If you had asked Liz Parker three and half years ago where she thought she would be today she would have told you either engaged or married to the man of her dreams, Max Evans.

When she had agreed to the ‘postponing forever’ agreement with Max she never dreamed it would still be in play now. When she had arrived in New York and started classes, she had made it her business to date as many guys as often as she could hoping that it would drive Max crazy. Unfortunately he had gritted and bared it, sure she could tell that he didn’t like it, in fact he had even asked her why she felt the need to rub it in his face when she started showing up for lunch with him bringing along her latest date.

So they had introduced the rules. Eventually Liz had to admit the agreement worked. It had given her the time to be selfish and concentrate on her schooling, which ensured she was at the top of her class now. When she realised that dating all the time wasn’t going to get Max to back out of the agreement she settled down completely and most of the time it worked out fairly well, that was until 12 months ago when Liz just tired of the entire thing. Now her world was crashing down around her.

Once they reached Burn Liz marched straight up to the bar and ordered herself another couple of drinks, she had also been lucky enough to avoid being served by either Max or Michael. So far she had managed to be in the club without drawing any attention to herself.

So now sitting at a table slightly drunk she felt a lot better about her date with Kyle, at least he was fun. ‘Want to dance?’ he asked her.

‘Sure’ Liz smiled. Despite the fact he liked to talk about himself a lot, Kyle was an all right guy, very good looking and his body showed that he played a lot of sport.

***

‘Hey sweetie’ Serena grinned when she finally reached the bar.

‘Um hey’ Max replied scratching his ear nervously. He knew he couldn’t avoid her forever and that he needed to talk to her. To tell her what, he wasn’t really sure. Yeah sorry Serena I never should have got involved with you because I’ve already met the women I love and am going to marry, I just postponed it it even sounds ridiculous to him, so how could he expect Serena to understand it.

The worst part was is that Max couldn’t believe that Liz had actually put up with him for the past three years. I mean realistically he hadn’t dated that many girls, in fact Liz had been the one to do a considerable lot of dating when they had first arrived in New York it was one of the main reasons they had decided to put the rules into place. But thinking about it now the whole concept had been selfish and ridiculous on his part but at the time he hadn’t know what else to do, and even if he could get Liz to forgive him eventually he knew he probably didn’t deserve it considering how he had treated her during this entire situation.

‘What can I get you?’ he asked her then realizing that he had zoned out.

‘My usual’ she requested with a smile.

‘Um’ Max’s mind went blank he had no idea what her usual was, just another one of the things he didn’t know a bout Serena.

‘Vodka and red bull, Max’ she frowned. He was acting very peculiar tonight.

Max couldn’t help but keep returning his eyes to the girl in front of him and for the first time since he had met Serena Michaels three months earlier, he finally saw what Michael was talking about. Standing in front of him was a very good copy of Liz, the way she wore her hair, her eyes but then there was also obvious things that made them look so different like the way Serena dressed and the fact that she wore twice as much makeup.

Could it be possible that the reason he was attracted to her in the first place because she reminded him of Liz? He wondered

‘What time do you finish?’ she asked then. Luckily the lines had thinned out and there was no one waiting behind Serena to be served.

‘Oh around one or so’ Max shrugged. He looked up then and almost gasped when he caught sight of the dance floor. There was his Liz in the arms of Kyle Valenti and every muscle in his body flinched in jealousy. He curled his hands into fists unconsciously in an effort to stop himself from marching over there and ripping her out of Kyle’s arms and back into his own where she belonged.

‘Max are you alright?’ Serena asked worriedly turning her head to see what it was that Max was looking at. All she could see was people on the dance floor.

‘Fine’ he told her through gritted teeth. Michael also must have caught sight of the dance floor because Max heard him sigh and mumble something about it never-ending under his breath.

‘Well maybe you can come back to my house when you’re done here?’ she suggested then.

‘Um no I’m just going to head home’ Max replied.

‘Oh’ Serena sighed. What was up with him lately? She wondered once again.

‘But I need to talk to you about something tomorrow so do you think we could meet up?’ he asked her.

Serena watched the look on his face and was curious as to what he wanted to talk about, ‘well I’m kind of busy but I’ll be at the coffee house at around three’ let Max come to her for a change, she thought. She was a little sick of all the chasing she had to do to score Max Evans. Sure they hadn’t spent that much time together but Serena loved him, she had never been with anyone as truly amazing and sweet as Max and she had no intention of ending the relationship regardless of his behavior over the past three days, but letting him suffer and chase her around couldn’t hurt for a little while.

‘Yeah that’s fine’ he answered absentmindedly his eyes still drifting to the dance floor, only now Liz was headed their way and to Max’s disgust he realised that Kyle had gotten her drunk. Her hips were swaying seductively as she approached and every couple of steps she would stumble in her heels, Max knew from experience that Liz didn’t handle alcohol very well, which is why she didn’t drink very often.

‘Ok, I can see your pre-occupied’ Serena snapped ‘so I’ll just see you tomorrow if you remember to show up’ she told him before taking her drink and storming off still oblivious to what had Max so distracted.

‘Another drink please Mikey’ Liz smiled when she approached the bar and saw Michael’s face. Max took a few steps so that he was standing next to next to Michael.

‘Don’t you think you’ve had enough El?’ he asked gently.

Liz turned her head and glared at him ‘why don’t you mind your own business Max’ she snapped.

‘Well I consider you my business El’ he told her sincerely and the loving way he said the words almost caused Liz to crumble.

Kyle joined her at the bar then and to Max’s relief he seemed to be a little better than Liz. ‘Sorry Liz’ Michael apologised, he completely agreed with Max she had already had too much and he could loose his job if he served her. ‘I’m not allowed to serve intoxicated people’ he informed her with a smile and a wink.

‘Hey sexy’ Kyle greeted her ‘I was wondering where you went too’

Liz turned and pouted ‘they wont give me another drink’ she whined.

‘Yeah probably a good idea’ he laughed ‘how about we get out of here?’ he suggested.

Liz thought about it for a moment and with one last look shook her head.

‘Wait a second’ Max objected ‘El, why don’t you go to the toilet before you leave or you’ll need Kyle to stop’

Max could tell that Liz was about to tell him to go jump but she seemed to realise he was right and made a beeline towards the ladies. ‘Listen up Valenti’ Max seethed, leaning over the bar so he could get as close to Kyle as possible. Michael stood beside him with his arms crossed over his chest ‘It’s no secret that I don’t like you and that I hate the fact that Liz is out with you even more, but I swear to god if you take advantage of her while she is drunk I will hunt you down and kill you’ he declared.

‘That goes for me as well’ Michael added.

Max could tell that his threat had been received from the look on Kyle face and with one last nod he took off to wait for Liz.

Liz was almost asleep in the cab on the ride back to her apartment when Kyle’s voice broke through the thick fog ‘How come Max calls you El?’ he asked. It had always annoyed him how everyone would always call her Liz except for Max, he couldn’t understand where he had gotten El from in the first place anyway.

‘Oh I guess it’s because when I was little my grandma Claudia used to call me Eli’ she explained, but her explanation was lost on Kyle.

‘Why would she call you that?’ he asked confused. ‘I mean how do you get Eli or El from Liz?’ he asked.

His question caused Liz to laugh then. Liz had been in school with Kyle since kindergarten and she couldn’t believe that Kyle didn’t know her name.

‘Well actually my name is Elizabeth, Kyle. That’s where Liz comes from as well as Eli and El’ she informed him.

‘Oh’ he replied ‘so can I call you El?’ he asked then.

‘Um I’d rather you didn’t’ she told him.

‘How come?’ he asked.

‘Because like you said, only Max calls me El’ she answered sadly.

‘Right’ he replied annoyed.

When the taxi pulled up out the front of Liz’s apartment Kyle paid the driver and walked her to the door.

‘Do you want to come in?’ Liz asked him then. It was against the rules even she remembered that in her intoxicated state but that was also the point.

‘Sure’ Kyle smiled a little surprised.

Part 5

Max threw his keys on the table in the kitchen when he entered the apartment an hour later. He was glad to be finished work and had been able to escape Serena with out too much hassle and now he just wanted to check in on Liz, and make sure she got home alright.

‘Yeah you like that baby?’ He heard a male voice ask, stopping Max in his tracks.

‘Oh yes, Kyle’ Max felt his heart leave his body then because even if he wasn’t in his apartment he would know that voice and that moan anywhere. It was Liz in the throes of passion. He had been lucky enough to experience that and now because of his own stupidity someone else was getting to experience it too.

Walking backwards he stumbled onto the couch and buried his head in his hands letting the sobs that had been mounting up since their argument, out. He couldn’t remember a time that he had cried like he did right then. He knew that life as he dreamed it was now over. Looking back now he realised that he had let his own insecurities and fear stop him from having everything he had always wanted with Liz. He knew now that he was a coward and he also feared that that cowardice would loose him Liz forever.

He wasn’t sure what time it was when he finally stopped crying but the moans from Liz’s room had stopped and he assumed that they had fallen asleep.

Getting up he made his way to the bathroom, deciding to have a shower before hitting the sack.

***

Liz woke up early the next morning to a throbbing headache. She tried to sit up but found it hard because of the dead weight lying partially on top of her. Opening her eyes she expected to see that Max had crawled into bed with her last night but when she saw sandy blonde hair instead of black she almost screamed.

Think Liz she told herself and that’s when the events of the past two days came back to her. Finding out that Max was with someone else, no not just someone else she reminded herself. Serena Michaels. The date with Kyle the night before where she had drunk way too much and then inviting him into the apartment. Then she remembered what had happened after he had accepted her invitation and she felt the bile rise in her throat. Not worried anymore about waking him up she quickly shoved him off her and ran towards the bathroom.

***

Max woke to the sound of someone vomiting the next morning and instantly realised that it was Liz. Without thinking he quickly jumped out of bed and raced into the bathroom to check on her.

The sight that greeted him was anything but pretty. Liz was kneeling over the toilet her hair falling all over her face. He immediately kneeled down behind her and pulled her hair out of her face.

‘Oh El sweetie, are you ok?’ he asked her concerned.

When Liz finally had nothing left to vomit she allowed her self to fall back into Max’s arm. Max sat her between his legs as he leaned against the wall. Reaching up he pulled a washcloth from the bathtub and wet it, bringing it back to wipe her forehead.

‘Oh fuck I feel like shit’ she moaned.

‘I know baby, you’ll feel better later’ he told her. Liz closed her eyes and enjoyed the feel of being in his arms, she knew it wouldn’t last very long once he realised that Kyle was in her bedroom and she couldn’t really blame him either. Everything she had done the night before had been intended to hurt him, she had been calculative and used what she knew about him against him.

‘You okay Liz?’ Liz and Max looked up to find Kyle standing in the doorway of the bathroom in only his boxers rubbing sleep out of his eyes.

Liz felt Max’s hand tighten around her waist and his body tensed and she waited for him to push her away, it never came though.

‘She’s fine Kyle, I’ve got her’ He told him.

‘Um ok’ Kyle replied, a frown forming on his face ‘well I might head off then’ he said looking at Liz appearing to be waiting for her to say something.

‘Yeah sounds like a good idea’ Max told him.

A few minutes later Max and Liz heard the front door open and close and Max sighed in relief that Kyle was gone.

‘You feel a bit better now?’ he asked her quietly.

Liz nodded. ‘I-I didn’t sleep with him’ she whispered so quietly that Max barely caught what she said. She didn’t know why but she felt compelled to tell him.

‘What?’ he asked.

‘I said I didn’t sleep with him’ she repeated.

Max was quiet for a while not sure how to respond, ‘it certainly sounded like it’ he told her.

Liz felt the bile rose in her stomach all over again after his words, she had never meant for him to be in the apartment when what had happened, actually happened.

Max was right behind her all over again, holding her hair back and when she was finished he turned on the shower for her so she could clean up. ‘Have a shower it’ll make you feel better and I’ll go make you some toast’ he told her.

Twenty minutes later Liz emerged from the bathroom freshly showered and wearing a pair of Max’s boxers and his shirt, common lounge clothes for her. Max couldn’t help but smile when he saw her.

‘Feel better?’ he asked quietly.

‘Yeah’ she nodded ‘Thanks’ she said when he placed two pieces of toast in front of her with strawberry jam on them. Her favorite and it served as a reminder that no one on earth knew her as well as Max.

They sat in silence for what felt like forever. Liz eating her toast and Max watching her, sipping quietly on the glass of juice in front of him.

‘I know I have no right to ask but why did you invite him in El?’ Max’s question broke the silence.

Liz looked at him. There was so much to talk about and she knew that it needed to be done sooner rather than later.

‘You know why’ was her whispered reply.

‘Michael said that I deserved it you know. He said I should thank Kyle if fucking him made you feel better, was he right?’ he asked then.

‘I didn’t sleep with him’ she told him again growing a little annoyed that he didn’t seem to believe her the first time.

‘I-I was going to but I couldn’t go through with it. I didn’t want to sleep with him just because I was hurt with you and drunk. I would have regretted it for the rest of my life’ she whispered.

Max’s head fell into his hands. He should be ashamed of himself that he was happy that she was still untouched by another man, it was selfish of him and he knew that if she ever knew what he was thinking that she would hate him for it.

‘Why?’ she asked him then, her words coming out and pained and teary.

Max lifted his head.

‘I didn’t mean to’ he told her.

‘Then why did you, and especially with her?’ she cried.

‘I-I didn’t realise it was her at first’ he explained. ‘I met her at a party and I was pretty drunk. The details are pretty hazy but we must have kissed before I stumbled home’

‘So why did you see her again if you knew who she was and how much I despised her?’

‘It wasn’t until a month later that she mentioned that she was majoring in biology and that’s when I put it together’ he explained.

‘You dated her a month before you asked her anything about herself?’ Liz asked horrified. That wasn’t the Max she knew who shared everything with her.

Max seeming to know what she was thinking said ‘I’m not looking for a relationship with anyone other that you, Liz so those sort of things are pointless. Besides it was only a couple of dates’ he shrugged.

Liz felt a little happy at his words. He was right, she never tried to get to know any of the people she dated either because what was the point?

‘I didn’t call her back after I realised who she was but she wouldn’t give up’ he explained.

‘What do you mean?’

‘She chased me. She kept showing up at the bar every night, at parties I was at, hanging off me and stuff’

‘Why didn’t you tell her that you weren’t interested that you were with someone else?’ Liz reasoned.

Max’s head dropped again ‘that’s what I should have done, your right. The truth is El I was attracted to her and I’ve never seen the side of her that you and Maria talk about’

‘A-Are you saying you don’t believe me?’ she asked hurt.

‘Oh course I believe you El’ he told her sincerely ‘I’ve never believed in or trusted someone more than I trust you’ he whispered.

‘So did you sleep with her?’ she asked then. Maria had already told her that he had but she needed to hear it herself. She still wasn’t sure what she was going to do but she needed some closure on this entire situation if she was going to be able to sit the rest of her exams without failing.

‘Y-Yes’ he replied.

Liz let the sobs overtake her then.

‘I’m so sorry baby’ Liz had known all along that their was the potential for Max to fuck someone else, but deep down she had always hoped that he would never want to be with anyone else the way he was with her.

‘Michael asked me tonight if I was blind and he pointed something out to me. I’d never noticed it before until then but it made some of the things I was feeling for Serena a lot clearer’ he told her then.

‘What’s that?’ Liz asked him bitterly.

‘I don’t love Serena, El. I only love you and that’s never changed or faltered, ever. You have to know that. What I felt for Serena is attraction and now that I know why I was attracted to her I feel a lot better about it’ he told her.

‘Well I’m glad one of us do’ she snapped.

‘Haven’t you ever noticed how much Serena looks like you?’ he asked her then.

Liz’s head snapped towards him then. ‘What do you mean?’ she asked.

Max allowed a ghost of a smile to emerge then ‘Baby, she could be your twin’ he told her.

‘Oh now your just delusional’ she barked.

‘No I’m not’ he told her ‘she has the same colour and length hair as you, her eyes are similar, the skin color, her height and frame are all like you. The only difference is her clothes and makeup’ he argued

Liz thought about what he was saying, hadn’t Maria said something similar the first day of class when she had seen Serena?

‘So you’re saying you liked her because she looked like me?’ she asked.

‘Well I have to be honest and tell you I didn’t see it myself but the things that attracted me to her are essentially the things I love and adore about you’ he told her.

Liz nodded the things he had said had given her a lot to think about she stood up and put her plate on the sink and began walking back towards her bedroom. Her plan was to change the sheets before sinking back into her bed.

‘I’m going to tell her I can’t see her anymore’ Max’s words stopped her in her tracks.

‘Y-You are?’ she asked without turning around to face him.

‘I just want to be with you, El’ he whispered.

Liz turned around quickly then fire in her eyes and anger blaring unlike Max had ever seen. But what she said next was the last thing Max Evans ever expected.

Part 6

‘No, Max, no you don’t’ she yelled ‘isn’t that was this postponing forever shit was all about’

‘I-I’ Max’s mouth fell open in shock; he had never seen Liz so angry before.

Liz’s anger was quickly replaced by tears though ‘W-Why was I never enough for you?’ she cried before breaking down and sinking to the floor. Finally allowing three years of hurt seep out.

Snapping out of his stupor Max crawled to Liz and pulled her into his arms ‘oh baby you are my every dream come true’ he cried.

Liz couldn’t respond her body was sobbing uncontrollably now and she allowed Max to sooth her through it, clinging on to him as though it would be the last time she was in his arms because potentially it could be.

‘Y-You say that you love me but you never wanted to be with me’ she cried then.

‘Oh El’ he closed his eyes at the pain he heard in her voice. It would be so easy to tell her the awful truth about everything but then he would do the one thing he had tried to prevent over the past 4 years. He knew she would have to make a choice and that’s not what he wanted for her.

He wanted to tell her that everything she wanted he wanted just as badly. He wanted her face to be the first one he saw every morning, not because they ate breakfast together but because she woke in his arms. He wanted her to know that she was his; he was hers for the rest of their lives. He just wanted her to know the truth so badly. It had been hard the past three and half years watching her get ready and go out on dates knowing it wasn’t what she wanted to do but that she did it because he asked her for time. He knew she never expected him to need this much time and he had just hoped she could hold on till graduation and then he would make everything right regardless of what anyone else said.

He realised now that maybe that’s why he had been so weak with Serena. He wanted the things he couldn’t have with Liz.

‘I do love you’ he told her ‘and I want to be with you so bad baby I just didn’t think it would work though’ he told her.

Liz pulled away from him then ‘you doubted us before we even started?’ she asked.

‘No, that’s not what I meant’ he replied cursing himself for not thinking before he opened his mouth because that had come out completely wrong.

‘You know what Max I think your either a liar or a coward so which one is it. I mean even a guy like Michael with all his issues with family and relationships is able to have a healthy relationship with Maria. It seems commitment is right for everyone but you’ she bit back angrily.

‘Your right Liz I am a coward but I’m not lying about my feelings for you. You’re the one’ he told her.

Liz shook her head. She didn’t know what to believe anymore, she was angry and hurt over the whole Serena situation but the truth was she knew it was just the beginning of her anger and hurt over the entire situation.

‘Don’t you get it El we could never be like Michael and Maria or even Alex and Isabel’ he cried then.

‘What do you mean?’ a confused Liz asked.

‘Sure El they love each other and they’re happy but you and I we don’t do things halfway. If we’d continued to be together after Prom it wouldn’t have ended at us coming to New York and living together. Eventually that wouldn’t have been enough for us and in the end I would have ruined your life’ he cried.

‘What?’ Liz asked shocked ‘How could you think you would ever ruin my life?’

‘I would have because whether is was after Prom or even a year later eventually I would have asked you to be mine forever, I would have asked you to marry me because nothing else would do. Sure we would have kidded ourselves saying that we were going to wait until after graduation but I know we wouldn’t have and in the end we would have been married before we graduated. Then before we know it you would have been pregnant Liz and then all your dreams about working as a microbiologist would go out the window and you’d accept a job close to where I worked instead of the one you really wanted. Then after the baby was born you wouldn’t go back to work and over the next 5 years or so we probably would have had a couple more kids. You would have decided to pursue your own career again until the kids went to school, only then you would probably find that your 10 year old degree means nothing because you have no lab experience and that’s when you start to regret Liz. You start to regret me and our children and out life because you gave up all your dreams and I don’t even want you to regret anything we do.’ Max began sobbing then finally relieved to get it off his shoulders after all this time. It wasn’t the complete truth but it was most of the truth.

Liz sat watching the man she loved with her entire heart sobbing uncontrollably. Everything he had said had shocked her to the very core, had he really thought he would be ruining her life. Did he really want to marry her?

Liz took him into her arms then and allowed him to cry, things certainly weren’t over.

***

By the time three o’clock came Max had calmed down considerably. He sighed when he looked at the clock realizing he would have to leave now or risk missing Serena and he wasn’t prepared to let this thing with her slide any longer.

He walked into Liz’s bedroom and pushed the already open door open further.

‘Liz’ he called to her hesitantly.

Liz lifted her head from the bed where she was studying.

‘I’ve gotta go meet Serena to talk to her’ he told her.

‘Oh’ Liz frowned. ‘Are you going to her apartment?’ she asked.

‘No’ Max shook his head ‘We’re meeting at the coffee shop around the corner’ he told her.

‘Do you want to come?’ he asked her then. He knew it probably wasn’t a good idea. He didn’t have any intentions of telling Serena about Liz he didn’t think it would serve any purpose except to make Liz’s life harder.

‘What are you going to tell her?’ she asked him.

‘The truth’ he told her.

Liz raised an eyebrow in question at him ‘and what exactly is the truth, Max?’ she found herself asking.

‘That I’m in love with the most wonderful women in the world and that being with her was a mistake and that I’m sorry for leading her on, but a relationship was impossible because I’ve already given my heart to someone else’ he told her.

Liz allowed a small smile to grace her lips, Max certainly had a way with words she thought.

‘No, I think it’s best that I don’t come considering’ she told him slipping back to her indifferent mode.

‘Yeah’ he smiled ‘I’ll be back in a half an hour or so’ he assured her.

Liz saw the guilt flicker in his eyes then. ‘Okay’ she replied.

‘Did you want anything?’ he asked her then.

‘Yeah there is a lot I want but I’m not sure you’ll find it in a coffee shop’ she told him turning her eyes back to the books in front of her.

Max frowned ‘okay well I’ll see you later then’ he said softly.

‘Bye’ she replied.

‘Love you El’ he whispered then, but Liz heard him and lifted her head ‘ I love you too’ she said but Max was already gone.

Max was at the front door when Liz’s words reached him and he smiled. Maybe things would be okay after all.

***

Serena looked at her watch for the third time in ten minutes ‘Am I keeping you from something?’ Tess her best friend asked angrily.

‘Oh Tess I’m sorry’ she sighed ‘Max was supposed to be meeting us here that’s all’

‘Oh’ Tess smiled. Tess liked Max, in fact she liked him a hell of a lot and was a little pissed that her best friend had got her claws into him before she had the chance. Personally she didn’t think that Max was all that interested in her friend and was just biding her time till she got a shot at him.

‘He’s probably just running late’ she tried to assure her.

‘No I don’t think so’ she sighed ‘he’s been acting really strange the past week, blowing me off and stuff. And the other night when I rang him when he was supposed to be at work I can heard a girl giggling in the back ground’ she frowned.

‘Did you ask him about it?’ she asked.

‘Yeah he said it was the girl he lived with’ she shrugged.

‘As in roommate or as in lives with?’ Tess asked curiously.

‘I’m not sure’ Serena told her ‘but believe me I’m going to find out’

‘Find out what?’ Max asked as he approached the table. He wasn’t sure what they were talking about but he had a feeling it was him.

‘Hey’ Serena grinned and stood up and threw her arms around his neck.

Max placed his hand on the side of her waist and gently pushed her away before taking a step back. ‘Hi Serena, Tess’ he greeted them but it was obvious to Tess that it was forced.

Serena sat down annoyed and confused as to why Max was blowing her greeting off she also wasn’t oblivious to the smiles and eyelash batting her best friend was doing when Max was around either.

‘You’re late’ Serena said then, a little harsher than she had meant to.

‘Yeah sorry about that’ he asked taking a seat across from her.

‘Max!’ Max, Serena and Tess all turned to see who it was calling to him.

Maria approached the table Max sat at with a frown and gestured with her head for him to follow her.

‘Excuse me’ he told Tess and Serena before following Maria.

‘What the hell is he doing talking to her?’ Tess asked.

‘God knows’ Serena sighed in annoyance.

***

‘What’s up Ria?’ Max asked her.

‘Nothing Liz just told me you were meeting skank incorporated down here and I just thought I’d come down and have my girls back’ she told him throwing another frown in Serena’s direction.

Max scratched his ear and tired to hold back a giggle ‘Well I’m sure that would have made Liz happy’

Maria nodded ‘I’ll be outside if you need me’ she assured him.

‘Thanks Ria, you’re a good friend you know that?’

Maria smiled before heading out the coffee shop allowing Max to return to Serena.

***

When Max returned to the table both Serena and Tess were whispering.

‘Ok why were you talking to Deluca?’ Tess asked him and just the way she said it caused the hairs on Max’s arms to stand up.

‘Yeah how do you know her anyway?’ Serena asked.

‘Actually Maria and I go way back, we’re both from Roswell’ he told them.

‘Oh god does that mean you know that friend of hers too’ Tess giggled.

‘What friend would that be?’ Max asked.

‘Liz, Liz Parker’ Serena filled him in ‘I mean Deluca is bad enough but Liz is the biggest loser’ she told him.

‘Oh god if you know her maybe you could find out if the rumours are true about her sleeping with Dr. Watson’ Tess laughed then.

Max frowned ‘I can assure you their not’ Max snapped stopping Tess’s laughing.

‘Oh god you do know her, you poor honey’ Serena soothed rubbing her hand up his arm.

‘Yes I do’ Max turned furious eyes to Serena ‘and I’ve also heard what a bitch you are to her’ he said then.

‘Excuse me?’ Serena played dump.

‘Hmm neither Liz or Maria are liars but I honestly thought they were exaggerating when they told me about you, obviously I just haven’t had the displeasure to see this side of you before’ he said through gritted teeth.

Serena and Tess’s mouth fell open in shock ‘How do you know Liz?’ Serena asked.

‘Liz is my best friend actually and we live together’ he told her. Max sighed then, they were getting totally off track but he couldn’t deny that he was glad he saw this side of her.

‘Um wow I didn’t know’ Serena stuttered.

‘Obviously’ Max snorted.

‘Look Max I’m sorry’ Serena whined ‘you said you wanted to talk so why don’t we go to my place? Or better yet how about your place you live close by don’t you?’

‘No’ Max shook his head.

Serena narrowed her eyes when Max shook his head something around his neck catching her attention ‘What’s that?’ she asked him reaching up to finger the chain that was now outside of his sweater.

‘It’s a chain’ Max answered lifting his hand to remove her hand.

‘What does the engraving say?’ she asked him then. She had never seen this chain or the hear hanging off it on him before.

Max sighed ‘It says El’ he told her.

Tess looked between the two and knew it was her cue to leave, so excusing herself she went to the bathroom.

‘Who’s El?’ Serena asked.

‘Serena I cant see you anymore’ he told her bluntly.

‘W-What?’ a shocked Serena asked this was the last thing she expected him to say.

‘I cant see you anymore. The truth is I never should have let this go as far as it did. I’m in love with someone else, Serena and I didn’t mean to lead you on but I cant have a relationship with you’

Serena felt the tears start falling down her face. ‘Is this because of Liz?’ she asked then. ‘I mean I didn’t know she was your best friend’ she argued.

‘It has nothing to do with the way you treated Liz, although it makes doing this easier because it’s obvious I don’t know you very well’

‘Who is she? Is it this El?’ she asked him.

‘Yes’ he replied ‘I love her and I’ve hurt her because of this thing with you’ he told her.

‘Wow’ Serena said wiping the tears from her eyes.

Max stood up then ‘Look for what it’s worth I’m sorry’ he told her.

‘Yeah right’ Serena replied. ‘This isn’t over, Max’ she assured him then.

‘Yes, Serena it is’ he said with conviction and then turned on his heel and walked away, not once looking back.

Part 7

As soon as Max entered the apartment he made his way to Liz’s room needing to see her face.

Liz looked up when she heard him approach.

‘Hey’ she said.

‘Hi’ he smiled back.

‘How did it go?’ she couldn’t help but ask. Truthfully she didn’t care she just wanted to know that it had been done.

‘It’s done’ he assured her as he made his way into her room and took a seat on the edge of her bed.

‘Can we talk?’ he asked her. They had only began to scratch the surface of the problems they had he realized, and he couldn’t stand the distance that was between them and wanted to sort it out as soon as possible.

Liz sighed and put her books down. There was still a week of exams left and Liz still had her two most important ones coming up and right not she wasn’t getting anywhere with the study she was trying to complete.

‘Max, I know we need to talk but I cant deal with this at the moment. I have a biology lab and written exam this week and right now I just want to concentrate on passing it’ she told him. ‘I know you have exams this week too so can we just let this go until our exams are over?’

‘But that’s a week Liz’ he replied shocked. Liz wasn’t the type of person to avoid things so he was concerned as to why she wanted to avoid this. He knew that her biology exam was important but he also knew that she probably didn’t need to study as much as she was making out.

‘I know but that’s the best I can do right now’ she told him.

Max stood up then he knew he wasn’t going to get anywhere with Liz when she was in the mood she was in ‘Ok’ he whispered.

‘I have to make this my priority’ she told him in defense. She could read the hurt on his face and in the tone of his voice.

‘What about us, Liz? we’re falling apart at the seams’ he turned to her, his eyes reflecting everything he was feeling.

‘I’ve never been your top priority before, Max so what’s different now?’ she snapped.

Max shook his head ‘That’s where your wrong Liz, it’s always been about you’ he told her softly before turning and heading out of her room and into his own. He knew if he stayed that there would be another argument brewing and he didn’t want that. He would step back and give Liz the space she wanted because wasn’t this what everything was about. Liz passing and getting her dream job was why he’d sacrificed everything he wanted with her and why he had hurt her over and over in the past three and a half years.

***

Serena watched with hatred as Liz walked to the front of the room and handed over her exam to the professor. She was the first one finished as usual and most likely she would top the class too. She couldn’t understand for the life of her how someone like Liz Parker had wound up being Max Evans best friend. They seemed to be completely opposite but on the other hand Serena recognized Liz as a weakness for Max. Maybe if she could get friendly with Liz she would be able to get the information out of her about who this El was that Max claimed to love and had dumped her for.

Liz sighed in relief when she left the classroom. Her exams were over; her college life was practically over too she thought happily. She was glad that the exam was easy and that she could get out of the room as quickly as possible, she had felt Serena’s eyes boring holes in her back the entire time and it was making her feel very uncomfortable. One thing she was glad for was that in a few short days she wouldn’t have to see Serena Michaels or her gerbil looking friend Tess Harding every again.

Liz picked up the mail as she made her way back to the apartment. She noticed immediately that there was another couple of letters to her from some big companies all over America. They had been coming for months now and she knew that she was running out of time to respond to them. Some were offering her jobs others were offering scholarships to continue her doctorate. She had continued to put them off hoping that things would be sorted out between her and Max and that they would be able to sit down and decide where they wanted to live together. Now she knew that she couldn’t hold of making a decision about her life anymore.

So popping the envelopes on the small dining table they had Liz went and retrieved the rest of them and began the task of reading through them and working out which one’s were possibilities and which ones she could rule out straight away for some reason or another.

***

Max allowed his first smile to form on his lips in over a week as he made his way into his apartment building. He was finally finished with exams and was only a few short weeks away from graduating. All he needed now was to find a job as a lawyer somewhere near where Liz found a job and things would be great.

He was also happy because now he could work on fixing things with him and Liz. He had been making plans for over six months for graduation and he wanted to fix things with him and Liz before then.

He was surprised when he entered the apartment to find Liz already home but also relieved because it must have meant her exam went well. But then he noticed that she was surrounded by papers and wondered what she was studying.

‘Hi’ he greeted her.

‘Hi’ Liz looked up.

‘How was your exam?’ he asked her.

‘Good’ she smiled ‘I’m pretty sure I’m going to get an A’

‘That’s my girl’ he smiled proudly before leaning down to press a kiss on her forehead, surprising Liz.

‘How about yours?’ she asked him.

‘Yeah it was good’ he told her pulling out the seat on the other end of the table and taking a seat.

‘What’s all this?’ he asked picking up an envelope and frowning.

‘Oh there job offers and such’ she told him as though it wasn’t a big deal.

Max looked up shocked. There had to be over thirty offers in front of her.

‘Why didn’t you say something?’ he asked her.

Liz shrugged ‘When did you want me to do that? During the five minutes I saw you every second day for breakfast?’

Liz looked up and saw the defeated look on his face. She had already gone through most of the offers and so far had found ten offers worth looking into from different parts of the country and also a very intriguing one from Europe which she had put on the bottom of the maybe pile. Maybe a trip and some distance would be the best thing for them.

‘Wow I knew you were doing well but this is amazing’ he sighed flicking through some of the offers in the pile Liz had rejected.

‘Yeah’ she shrugged modestly.

‘So’ he started then ‘now that exams are over can I take you out to dinner to celebrate tonight?’ he asked her.

‘Sorry I made plans with Maria’ she told him quickly before turning back to her list.

Max frowned he felt as though a giant glass wall had been built between him and Liz and he had no idea how to get past it. He had hoped giving her the space to get through her exams would help him in the end but apparently Liz had used the space to pull further away from him and now he felt like a stranger who was just looking in on her life.

‘What are you guys doing?’ he asked.

‘Michael had to work so we’re going to watch chick flicks and eat ice cream, that sort of thing’ she explained without looking up.

‘Do you think you could stop that for a couple of minutes to talk to me?’ he asked her then becoming increasingly annoyed with the way she was behaving.

‘Not really I need to go through these and make some decisions’

‘What sort of decisions need to be made that cant wait for ten minutes?’ he asked.

‘The kind where I decide if I want to accept a job in Europe or in California’ she snapped.

‘Your considering a job in Europe?’ he asked shocked.

‘I don’t know’ Liz finally looked up and caught the first glimpse of hurt and sadness in his eyes.

‘Don’t you think we should talk about it?’ he asked her.

‘What’s there to talk about?’ Liz asked him.

‘Well this is a big decision, El. The law system works differently in Europe and I’m not sure if I would be able to practice over there’ he told her.

‘Why would you be worried about working in Europe?’ she asked.

Max frowned then ‘well I need to work I cant live off you if we move over there’ he told her.

‘Who said anything about you moving over there, Max?’ she whispered then.

‘Well El if you’re going to be in Europe then that’s where I plan on being too’ he cried. He saw her face then and realised what she was getting at.

‘You don’t want me to come with you?’ he asked then.

‘I haven’t made a decision about Europe yet Max it’s just in the maybe pile’ she told him.

‘No, that’s not what I meant and you know it’ Max yelled then.

‘Your not planning on talking to me about this are you?’ he asked her then ‘because your not planning on being with me are you?’ he cried.

Liz looked up and met his distressed eyes then ‘I-I don’t know’ she replied.

Max jumped from the table ‘you said when exams were done you’d talk to me, that we would work through this’ he cried.

‘I told you I would talk to you I never told you that we were going to work this out, Max’

‘Fuck’ he screamed then ‘I know I fucked up El, god do I know it but I love you and I cant loose you’ he cried.

Liz allowed the tears to flow down her eyes then ‘and what happens if you already have?’ she whispered. She felt her heart breaking a little more with every word that she said to him. Even though she had told him she wasn’t ready to deal with him last week she had spent most of her time sorting through everything and she still didn’t have the answers and what that told her was maybe she needed space.

‘W-What?’ Max asked her.

Liz stood up and packed away the things that she was doing before walking into her bedroom.

‘Please don’t walk away from me El’ he pleaded ‘if you walk to far I’m not sure if we’ll be able to fix this’ he cried. The further she walked the less the chance was that she would want to. He was watching as three and half years of sacrifices went up in smoke.

‘I’m going to stay at Maria’s tonight I think we need some space’ she told him. ‘I need to clear my head and you need to calm down’ she told him trying to be reasonable.

‘No, the last thing we need is more space El’ he cried ‘the problem is we’ve had too much space’

Liz ignored him and continued to pack a bag of things to take with her to Maria’s.

‘El, please’ he cried.

Liz walked past him and towards the door, she stopped at the pleading sound in his voice ‘I don’t know what you want me to say, I don’t know what to say’ she whispered sadly.

‘You don’t have to say anything El I just need you to listen’ he begged.

‘Okay’ she told him ‘but tomorrow I promised Maria that we’d have girl time tonight’ she told him.

Max nodded his head in defeat even though she had agreed to talk to him she was still running and he didn’t know he was going to be able to do to catch her.

A/N: Hi everyone. Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback, I was happy with the reaction I got from a few of you in the last part it was what I was aiming for. Ok, now that we're right in the thick of the story I want to clarify a few things which some of you seemed to be confused by.

1. The rules - Yes Max broke them. He broke the 'Don't date anyone for more than two month rule' and the 'If you sleep with someone you have to tell the other'. So what Max did isn't considered cheating anymore than what Liz did with Kyle is.

Also, the rules were a mutual decision.

2. Max knows he fucked up by sleeping with Serena, he also knows it's not Liz's fault. It's the situation that he is frustrated with and there are reasons why he chose the path that he did.

3. Except for the three months where Max had been seeing Serena him and Liz did see each other. They always made sure to have breakfast together when they could and they shared the closest friendship. Serena was not the reason for them not seeing each other. Between Exams, and studying for Exams and work schedules they were coming and going. This was both their faults Liz because she devoted a lot of time to school and Max because he worked.

Part 8

Maria was shocked when she opened the door to see a sobbing Liz; she had expected to see a happy best friend since exams were over.

‘What’s wrong sweetie?’ she asked her as she swept her into the apartment.

‘M-Max’ she sobbed out. On the short trip down to Maria’s Liz finally let her emotions get the better of her and she started to cry. It had hurt more than anything to walk away from him when he was begging her to stay and talk to him but she wasn’t ready to.

‘Oh sweetie’ Maria soothed, an explanation wasn’t needed she had the conversation daily with Liz.

***

Isabel knocked on the door to her brothers apartment waited for him to answer. She had barely heard or seen him in the past couple of months but the gossip had finally got to her the day before when she had met with Maria for lunch and had been filled in on what was happening between him and Liz.

Isabel loved Liz and couldn’t wait for the day that the two of them would be sisters. She never understood what Max was doing ‘postponing forever’ and had been one of the first people to confront him asking him if he was stupid. He hadn’t gone into details with his explanation but he had assured her that there was reason to his madness so like in everything they did Isabel trusted her brother.

When Maria had told her what Max had done at first she had refused to believe it. Isabel knew without a doubt how much Max loved Liz, it was obvious to everyone but to Isabel she could always see it more and thought it was because of the connection she had with her brother.

When no one answered the door Isabel began to get worried, she could hear someone in there and Maria had only rang her an hour ago asking her to go and check up on Max and explained the condition Liz was in. Thankfully Maria had realised that Max was probably in a worse condition after Liz had walked out on him.

Isabel tested the door handle and found it open so she hesitantly entered the apartment.

‘Max’ she called out but she received no response. There were lights on in the house so Isabel made her way to Max’s bedroom hoping that she might find him there asleep.

I hear the clock, it's six a.m.
I feel so far away from where I've been
I got my eggs, I got my pancakes too
Got my maple syrup, everything but you
I break the yolks and make a smiley face
I kinda like it in my brand new place
I wipe the spots off of the mirror, don't leave the keys in the door
I never put wet towels on the floor anymore 'cause

Max was in his room but he wasn’t asleep. Isabel found him sitting on his bed, his face red from crying and his clothes crumpled. Isabel had never seen her brother look so defeated in her entire life and her heart went out to him.

‘Max’ she called to him again softly this time gaining his attention.

The minute Max caught sight of his sister he immediately began crying again.

‘She’s gone Iz and I don’t know if she’ll come back’ he sobbed.

Dreams last so long, even after you're gone
I know, that you love me and soon you will see
You were meant for me and I was meant for you

Isabel rushed to his side ‘Shh it’s ok she’ll be back tomorrow she’s just at Maria’s for the night’ she tried to reassure him.

‘N-No’ he shook his head ‘you didn’t see her Izzy, the way she looked at me, the way she’s been looking at me for the past week now. I-I don’t think she wants to be with me anymore’

‘Oh Max’ Isabel cried. She noticed then that Max appeared to have something in his hand ‘What’s that?’ she asked him.

I Called my momma, she was out for a walk
Consoled a cup of coffee but it didn't wanna talk
So picked up a paper, it was more bad news
More hearts being broken or people being used
Put on my coat in the pouring rain
I saw a movie it just wasn't the same
'Cause it was happy and I was sad and
It made me miss you oh so bad cause

Max opened his hand and revealed the small black box causing Isabel to gasp.

‘Is that what I think it is?’ she asked him.

‘Y-Yes’ he told her handing it to her so that she could take a look at it.

Dreams last so long, even after you're gone
I know, that you love me and soon you will see
You were meant for me and I was meant for you

‘Oh Max’ Isabel couldn’t get over how beautiful the ring inside was; it would be perfect for Liz.

‘When did you get this?’ she asked him.

Max laughed bitterly ‘three and half years ago’

‘What?’ Isabel gasped. Three and half years ago was high school and pretty much the time that Max started to behave like a typical male when it came to his relationship with Liz.

‘I bought it after Prom’ he told her.

‘Why?’ she asked.

Max turned to his sister then, at the time he had wanted to confide in Isabel but had decided that if he wanted this to work that he was going to have to keep it a secret.

‘Because I was going to ask her to marry me’ he whispered.

Dreams last so long, even after you're gone
I know, that you love me and soon you will see
You were meant for me and I was meant for you

Isabel was completely stunned and confused, if Max was going to ask Liz to marry him then how did they end up in the mess they were now. Not together and certainly not engaged or married, so she asked him as much.

Max sunk against the wall ‘God Iz, everything is a disaster what am I going to do without her’ he sobbed.

Isabel moved to try and comfort Max but he shrugged her off, she wasn’t able to get anything out of him to explain what was going on.

‘I shouldn’t have listened but I just wanted her to be happy’ he cried.

Isabel couldn’t take anymore, Max was an absolute wreck and it was obvious it wasn’t her that he needed. So making a decision she quickly left the apartment and headed towards Maria’s.

When Maria heard the knock at the door she looked at Liz surprised. It had taken close to an hour to calm Liz down but now they were happily watching the latest Jason Behr movie and enjoying their favorite Ben & Jerry’s.

‘I wonder who that could be’ she said to Liz as she got up to answer it.

‘Isabel’ she smiled surprised when she saw the talker women on the other side.

‘Hi Maria’ she smiled sadly ‘I’m sorry to barge in on you but I need to talk to Liz’ she told her.

Liz popped her head up over the couch when she heard Isabel’s voice and the mention of her name; she wasn’t aware that Maria had called Isabel and asked her to check on Max.

‘Hey Iz’ she smiled. Isabel took in her friend’s appearance and frowned at what she saw. Liz looked pale and thin in the face and it was obvious that this whole situation was taking its toll on her as well.

‘Liz, I know you don’t want to deal with this right now but I’m really worried about Max’ she told her.

‘What’s wrong with him?’ she asked quickly.

‘He’s a mess, Liz and I cant calm him down, I don’t know what to do. I panicked and came here’ she told her.

Liz jumped off the lounge immediately and started heading towards the door. ‘Liz, are you sure you should do this?’ Maria asked her friend worriedly.

‘Where is he?’ Liz asked.

‘In his bedroom’ Isabel explained as her and Maria followed Liz as she practically ran to the apartment she and Max shared.

Liz fidgeted nervously in the lift on the way up to her apartment ‘did he say anything?’ she asked Isabel.

‘Um nothing that made sense’ Isabel confessed leaving out the part about the engagement ring on purpose. If and when Max and Liz actually got around to talking everything over it would be up to him to show her or tell her about it.

Once they reached her floor Liz took off out of the elevator into a dead run towards her apartment.

‘Max’ she cried out racing into the apartment. She found him minutes later in the exact place Isabel had told her she left him. He was sobbing uncontrollably and mumbling something that she couldn’t understand.

‘Max’ she fell onto the floor next to him and straddled his lap so that she could take him in her arms.

‘Max, please it’s me’ she told him trying to calm him down.

Max had no idea how long he had sat in the spot he was but he knew that he was totally out of control, he thought that he had heard Liz calling for him but that would mean that she had come back to him and right now he refused to believe that.

‘Max baby’ he heard again.

‘E-El’ he cried out uncertainly.

‘Yeah it’s me sweetie, please calm down’ she pleaded.

Maria and Isabel stood in the doorway watching the scene before them in shock. For Isabel she felt helpless that her brother, the person she had always turned to in times of trouble was sitting in front of her having a breakdown and that there was nothing that she could do about it.

Maria watched on in sadness, that her best friend and the man that she was convinced her best friend would grow old with were falling apart in front of her. It scared her because if Max and Liz couldn’t make it how did her and Michael or even Isabel and Alex think they could.

‘I’m sorry’ Max whispered when he eventually calmed down. He looked at the clock and realised he had been sitting there for close to a half an hour by now.

Liz looked up and found Maria and Isabel still standing there watching. ‘Can you guys leave us please?’ she asked them.

Isabel nodded ‘Call me later?’ she requested and Liz nodded.

Maria on the other hand hesitated ‘Sorry to cut our night short Ria but’ she started.

‘Don’t even, Liz your where you need to be but are you sure you don’t want me to stay?’

‘Um no’ she shook her head in the negative.

‘Okay, call me if you need anything, and I mean anything at all’ she told her.

‘Thank you’

When they were gone Liz turned her attention back to Max. ‘Are you okay now?’ she asked him.

Max raised his face to meet hers then before lifting a hand and gently pushing a piece of stray hair behind her ear. It was a familiar move on his part and it brought comfort to him that she would still allow him to do it.

‘I thought you were gone’ he told her.

‘I was only at Maria’s’ she replied concerned at what she saw in front of her. Normally she could tell what Max was thinking by his eyes but when she looked at them now they looked empty, dead.

‘Yeah so close yet so far away’ he mumbled sadly and quietly.

‘Talk to me’ she begged him then.

‘Like you talked to me earlier’ he replied sadly. There was nothing accusing in his tone, no fight Liz acknowledged.

‘Your scaring me’ she cried then.

‘I’m sorry, I don’t mean to’ he whispered. He reached out and used his hands to remove her off his lap then, placing her gently beside him before pushing himself off the floor. He walked over to his bed and noticed that the ring was still on the bed where Isabel was looking at it before she had left so he quickly picked it up and placed it back in his second drawer.

‘What’s that?’ Liz asked him. He hadn’t heard her walk up behind him.

‘N-Nothing’ he stuttered ‘I’m going to go have a shower’ he told her quickly avoiding her and heading towards the bathroom.

Liz heard the door close and the shower start soon after and fell on the bed and closed her eyes. She was so tired and she felt as though her and Max had done nothing but go around in circles every time they talked. Sure she was angry and she deserved to be but she should have talked to him last week when he had asked her, and she definitely should of talked to him today. She realised now that Max was falling apart before her very eyes and she wondered if maybe he wasn’t the only one who had been blind for months now. Was Max’s dating Serena as a cry for help to her?

Her attention turned back to the object Max had quickly shoved back into his drawer and she wondered what it could have been. Her and Max had never had secrets but things had changed recently. Unable to help herself though and aware from the sound of water running that Max was still in the shower she hesitantly opened the drawer. Inside was mostly filled with papers and photos of the two of them but amongst all that was the bag that she had seen in his hand earlier.

She pulled out the contents of the bag quickly, a small black box and a receipt. Her eyes raked over the receipt first.

‘Roswell Jewelers’ she murmured confused ‘Two thousand dollars’ she gasped. Her interest was peaked and just as she was about to open the box she realised that she had forgotten to pay attention to the sounds of the shower.

‘El, what are you doing?’ Max’s voice came from the doorway.

Part 9

Max was shocked at what he saw when he entered his room after his shower. Liz was sitting on his bed with the box containing her engagement ring in her hand prepared to open it.

‘El, what are you doing?’ he asked. He knew he should be annoyed that she was snooping but it wasn’t surprising that her interest had been peaked. They never used to keep things from each other which made surprises hard, but this was something he had managed to keep from her for three and half years now. He realised what a mistake it had been too and now it was time to tell her.

Liz’s head snapped up when she heard his voice ‘W-What is this?’ she asked him hesitantly before quickly averting her eyes. She felt guilty as hell that she had snooped but it was even worse that she had been caught. But right now her guilt was being overshadowed by desire and love because Max stood in front of her with only a towel wrapped around his waist and water all over his body.

Max sighed before making his way into his bedroom ‘you shouldn’t be snooping, El’ he told her.

He turned around and let the towel drop to the floor leaving him naked and giving Liz a perfect view of his toned ass and thighs. He quickly pulled a fresh pair of boxers on before turning back around to her.

He smiled when he saw her eyes darken with desire.

Liz averted her eyes quickly and back to the box in her hand but Max reached down gently and took it out of her hand before taking a seat beside her.

‘I’m sorry I couldn’t help myself’ she apologized.

‘I’m surprised it took you this long to find it’ he replied.

‘I didn’t think I needed to snoop’ she replied.

Max nodded, she was right.

‘Are you okay?’ she asked him then.

‘Better now that your here but how long is that going to last?’ he smiled sadly.

‘I was wrong to walk out on you this afternoon and I’m sorry’ she told him.

‘You can’t forgive me can you?’ he startled her then. His question was the last one she had been expecting but she shouldn’t have been surprised Max was always the sort of guy that got straight to the point.

‘Right now?’ she asked.

Max nodded.

‘No I cant’ she whispered ‘I feel so hurt right now that I cant see past it. It’s why I walked out on you this afternoon and why I have to have this conversation with you now’

Max’s head fell; he knew it was only a matter of time. Sure Isabel never believed that the situation would go this far, nor did the rest of their friends but Max knew. Max knew Liz better than anyone, which is why in the end he knew she would walk.

He stood up then and walked over to his window ‘There are a lot of things I need to tell you’ he said.

‘What about?’ she asked him.

‘About why I came up with the idea to postpone forever’ he answered still not turning to face her.

‘I thought it was because you weren’t ready and that you were scared about ruining my future plans, about me regretting?’ she asked confused. The funny thing was that Liz could understand where he was coming from when he had admitted all the things to her the week before and she could even admit to some degree he was right. Her dreams were important to her but she had realised something very important during all of this and that was that being with Max Evans was more important.

Max shook his head ‘I was ready’ he whispered ‘that had nothing to do with it’ he told her honestly.

‘Then why?’ she asked him.

‘Y-You should tell me what you needed to talk to me about first’ he said then. He had a feeling he knew what was coming which is why he was holding off on telling her. He had a feeling that in the end it wouldn’t make a difference, except to cause a lot of trouble and upset her.

‘I think it would be best for us to spend some time apart’ she told him.

Max turned to face her then.

‘I still love you, Max but right now I’m hurt and I cant get past that. I know you say that you love me and that I’m the one you want to be with but I don’t know if I can believe that any more. Maybe being with me it just easy and safe and just like you I don’t want you to give up on the things that mean a lot to you and one day regret everything we have’

Max felt the last shred of hope he had been holding onto fall away. He walked to his closet quickly and threw on a t-shirt and a pair of jeans before turning back to face her.

‘I’ll stay with Iz and Alex tonight’ he told her ‘I’ll come by and get the rest of my stuff tomorrow’

‘What!’ Liz gasped. Was he just going to leave and give up on everything?

‘I said I was going’ he repeated

‘No I heard what you said. So that it’s your just going to give up, walk away?’ she yelled angrily.

In her mind she new she was being irrational. She had just told him that they needed time apart and instead of her being forced to leave to get it he was going to do it to give her space but now that it was happening she didn’t want it. Liz wanted him to beg her to listen to him to let him prove to her how much he loved her. Liz wanted Max to fight for her like he had never had to fight before.

Max shook his head ‘No, but in one breath you just told me that you don’t believe that I love you or want to be with you, and I know for a fact that you don’t trust me so what is there left when you take all those things away?’ He whispered sadly.

‘What about the fact that I want to believe, I want you to convince me’ she cried. ‘I want to be your forever’ she fell onto the bed then and sobbed.

Max approached the bed hesitantly and sat down before reaching out to caress her hair.

‘You are my forever’ he whispered.

Liz rolled over to face him when she heard his whispered words. ‘When?’ she asked ‘When am I your forever?’

‘Today, tomorrow, yesterday, last week, and for the 1200 hundred days before that’ he replied without skipping a beat.

Liz eyes locked with his own and she saw nothing but love and truth in those eyes. But then she remembered all the countless faces who he had taken out on dates, and who he had kissed on those dates.

‘Then why? I need you tell me why?’ she begged.

Max sighed and ran a hand threw his hair, it was now or never he thought. He pulled the box our from his pocket and handed it to her.

‘What’s this?’ she asked confused.

‘Proof’ he whispered.

Liz slowly turned her eyes back to the box before gently lifting the lid on the box. When her eyes focused and she realised what it was she was staring at she gasped.

‘I-Is this what I think it is?’ she asked.

‘What do you think it is?’ he asked.

‘Forever’ she whispered back turning her eyes back to Max.

‘Yes’ he answered.

‘The receipt said it came from Roswell’ she stated then trying to assess all the information she had. Sure they had been back to Roswell for Christmas’s and for a few weeks during the summers but she hadn’t known Max had got this.

‘It did’ he told her.

‘Um’ she licked her lips ‘how long have you had this?’

‘Does it make a difference?’ he asked her.

‘Well I mean we haven’t been home in over six months I guess I was just curious’ she rambled.

Max gently reached over the took the box from her hands then. ‘What are you doing?’ she asked.

Max was a little shocked ‘Um I was just going to put it away’ he stuttered.

‘It’s not for me?’ she asked confused.

Max shook his head. Five minutes ago he could have sworn that she was leaving him and now she was upset that he wasn’t proposing.

‘Yes I bought it for you but you cant have it’ he told her this time allowing a smile.

‘Oh’ she frowned

‘El, you can’t have the ring until I ask you a question and you say yes to it’ he laughed.

‘I’ll be forty and too old to have kids before your ready for that’ she mumbled under her breath but Max heard her regardless.

‘El, I love you and believe me I’ve dreamed a thousand dreams about proposing to you but none of them involved this scenario. So right now no you cant have the ring and it’s not because I’m not ready or I don’t want to it’s because right now we need to fix us’ he told her.

‘So now you want to fix us’ she said sarcastically.

‘Well until five minutes ago I didn’t think there was an us to fix’ he replied.

Max could tell that Liz was about to argue with him.

‘Stop’ he told her. Looking at the clock he noticed that it was past ten and he was completely exhausted.

Liz was startled at his tone and force.

‘Let’s stop playing games. I just want us to put everything out there so then we can deal with it. Can we do that?’ he begged.

Liz thought about what he was saying. Of course he was right. They had been back and forth for over a week now and it was getting them nowhere. She had no idea what she wanted or if she could move past this thing with Serena but she also realised that it was because she no idea what Max wanted or what he was thinking.

Max watched Liz nervously. He wasn’t ready to walk but if that’s what she wanted in the end he would. He realised that he was opening a can or worms that things might be said that could never be taken back but he also acknowledged that Liz would finally know the truth about the way he felt, what he wanted and the reason why they were in this situation. But he wouldn’t stop what he started because it would all be worth it if in the end they could come back to each other.

‘Yes, let’s do this’ she told him.
