Prologue

Max Evans tried, for the fourth time in the last two minutes, to move his arms from where they were resting on his chest, to crossed behind his head, once again coming out unsuccessful. Every fiber of his being protested against any movement, screaming out in pain if he took too deep a breath.

“I thought that training camp would get easier.” Drew, one of his teammates said from the bed next to him. “I mean, it seemed rational. The longer we were here, the more we get used to being pushed...but no. I think this is the sorest I’ve ever been in my entire life.”

“I hear you, man.” Max said, unable to even turn his head to the left to look at Drew when he was talking to him.

Max still couldn’t believe he was here. It all seemed like a dream. The really good kind that you have and you get really excited about, but then you wake up and it didn’t happen. At least not to you.

Everything had happened so suddenly too. It seemed like just yesterday he was celebrating actually making it onto his college basketball team.

As long as Max had been alive, he had been in love with basketball. He and his father used to sit and watch games together every chance they got. Max played basketball on his junior high team, and his high school team, always playing the position of shooting guard.

Some of the best moments in his life had to do with playing basketball. He’d even met his girlfriend, Liz Parker, while playing basketball his freshman year. He remembered the day as if it were only yesterday. He and his best friend, Michael Guerin, were at the park shooting some hoops, trying to nail their lay-ups and rebound shots, determined to make Varsity by following year. Max had done a particularly nasty job with one rebound, missing the basket entirely and sending the basketball flying in the direction of a girl sitting under a tree reading.

Max had yelled for her to watch out, and she’d looked up just in time to catch the ball before it bounced into her nose. He’d run over to make sure she was ok, and all she could tell him was that he would have made the shot if he were following through properly. He’d laughed it off and told her that he’d been playing basketball long enough to know what was wrong. To which she argued that if he knew what he was doing wrong, and had been playing basketball long, he would have corrected it already.

She’d introduced herself as Elizabeth Parker, but told both of the guys to call her Liz. She explained that she’d just moved to town a week before. She left, shortly thereafter, telling them she really did need to be getting home. As she walked away, she yelled at them to keep focus and follow through, to which they both rolled their eyes...until thirty minutes later, when they’d actually listened to her. Neither of them had missed a shot the rest of the day.

Max caught up with Liz the next day at school to thank her for helping him. She told him anytime he needed help she was there for him. Before he knew what he was doing he asked her to go out with him that weekend, and she’d agreed. Ever since, they’d been inseparable.

They’d finished up junior high and high school together, both opting to go to the same college. New Mexico State University in Las Cruces since it was only three hours from their hometown of Roswell, New Mexico.

For Max, freshman year of college was a blur, as was most of his sophomore year. Except for one particular event from his sophomore year, which will be forever engraved in his memory as one of the moments he’ll never forget as long as he lives.

The New Mexico State basketball team had made it to the championship, and was up for the title. The whole game was one big adrenaline rush, as both teams were very equally matched. Most of the time, they were tied, only for one to get a point or two ahead before the other team would come back and tie it up again.

Max had been put in the last three minutes of the game, knowing he needed an absolute miracle to pull something off. His job on the team was simple…he was the one who was supposed to score the points, and that’s exactly what the team was expecting.

There were still some exact details of those last three minutes that he just couldn’t remember, even after seeing the videotape of the game. He was a jumble of nervous, anxious energy as the clock winded down with the other team just one point ahead.

Somehow, one of his teammates had managed to steal the ball from the other team, and dribble it half way down the court before passing it to Max. He stood there, completely stunned for a good three seconds, before he heard Liz yell at him to shoot the ball. He looked up at the clock, five seconds left in the game. He turned to look at Liz for a moment before he dribbled the ball between his legs and took the shot. The buzzer went off as the ball sailed through the air. The whole place was completely silent waiting to see if the ball went into the hoop or not.

Max held his breath as he watched the ball arch in the air and swish through the net. The perfect three-point shot won them the game.

The whole crowd erupted in applause, leaping from their seats as the whole team ran out onto the court, yelling, cheering, and hollering. Max stood on the court, staring at the basket in awe as his team embraced him, slapping him on the back.

When he finally regained his bearings, his eyes immediately sought out Liz. She was on her feet, standing in between his sister, Isabel, and her best friend, Maria. She had the biggest smile on her face, tears of pride swimming in her big, brown eyes.

After the game, he got business cards from several NBA scouts shoved into his hands, all of them promising him the biggest, brightest future if he decided to come play for them. He hardly paid them any mind, his only thoughts were of getting to Liz.

After the game, the gang all went out to have a big celebration dinner, where Max told them all about the scouts. They all looked over the business cards, in awe over the teams that wanted to recruit Max.

He and his parents spent the next two weeks talking to each scout in great detail over what it would mean if Max decided to join their team. After weeks of deliberation, Max finally decided to join the Boston Celtics.

He smiled to himself as he thought back over the nervousness and anticipation he felt before training camp had started. Once he actually got there, he was worked way too hard to be nervous anymore.

“What’s the first thing you’re gonna do when you get back home?” Drew asked, still sprawled on the bed next to Max.

“Go see Liz.” Max answered, without a second’s hesitation.

“That’s your girl, right? That hot little number with the brown hair and brown eyes?”

Max checked the impulse to beat Drew to a bloody pulp for saying something like that about Liz, instead simply smirking to himself. “Yeah. That’s my girl.”

Before he could get too excited about the thoughts of finally getting out of the hell hole known as training camp, and going back to see Liz, the head coach came into the room.

“Evans! Epley!” Coach Rivers barked, prompting Max and Drew to leap from their beds, no matter how much their bodies protested. “Here.” Coach walked over to them, handing them each a piece of paper. “This is the tentative schedule for this coming season. I know it looks crazy now...” He trailed off.

“Coach?” Drew ventured after Rivers failed to say anything else.

“Oh, I didn’t have anything to add to that. The schedule’s always crazy. You never get used to being away from your family, but it comes with the territory, so get used to it ASAP. It’ll make it easier.” With that, Rivers nodded his farewell and left the room.

Max and Drew both hobbled back to their beds, collapsing onto them and groaning. Max lay there for a minute before he brought the schedule up to look at it. Coach was absolutely right. The schedule was crazy. There were games and practices, and traveling all over the place. He knew there was no way he’d have time for anything besides basketball for a long time to come.

After that realization, he knew what he had to do, even if it was the last thing he wanted. He mulled the situation in his head for the hour it took him to pack up, and the entire way back to Roswell. As soon as he got into town, he did exactly what he told Drew he was going to do, and went to see Liz.

He rang the doorbell and took a deep breath as he heard footsteps approaching the door. When the door opened Liz stood in front of him, the light from the room behind her silhouetting her, making her look like an angel.

He didn’t get a chance to even get a ‘hello’ out before she launched herself into his arms, peppering his face with kisses, and holding onto him for dear life. He slowly brought his arms up to encircle her waist, forever awed by how tiny she was in comparison to him. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling her scent, memorizing it.

After a few minutes, they pulled back and looked at each other for a few minutes. Liz stood on her tiptoes, giving Max a nice, long, proper kiss.

She pulled back and looked up at him, grinning from ear-to-ear. “Hi.”

“Hey.” He replied, unable to smile back at her. “Can I come in? We need to talk.”

Hey guys! Since both Tanya and I lack anything resembling any willpower, I'm back to post the first chapter. We'd just like to let everyone know that we're going to be updating this every Saturday. Next Saturday, Tanya will be back with Chapter Two.

We'd both like to thank you all for your feedback. It helps get us moving... we're kinda slackers by nature... *LOL*

Ok, I'm shuttin up... On with the show!

Chapter One

~Six Years Later~

Liz Parker grabbed the last of her personal things off her desk and walked out of her office, thankful that it was a Friday. After a long, grueling week of working her ass off, worrying about last minute details and making sure everything was absolutely perfect, she had finally finished with her first high-profile client. As soon as she’d been positive that she was going to finish everything that week, she’d called her friends and demanded they go out on Friday for a big celebration... and thankfully, Friday had finally arrived.

As one of the newest interior designers at Castle’s Interior Designs in Atlanta, Georgia, she knew that how she performed on that account would mean the difference between preparing herself for all the high-profile cases, and packing up her desk to leave after being fired. Thankfully, it wasn’t the latter that she needed to prepare for, because her client loved every little detail, promising to tell everyone they knew all about her.

She hurried into the parking garage, disengaging the locks on her sporty, red, Mazda RX-8. She hopped in, putting her briefcase in the backseat, and her purse in the passenger seat before slipping the key into the ignition and taking off.

She left the parking garage, flipping through the radio stations as she made her way through Atlanta. As she drove, she sang along with the radio, giggling at the guys she passed who couldn’t help but take notice of the beautiful woman driving the hot red car.

Half an hour later, due to the ridiculous traffic jams everywhere, she finally made it to her apartment, deciding she needed to change before she went out. She quickly grabbed her things out of the car and hurried to her door.

She unlocked the door and walked in. No matter how many times she walked in the front door, her apartment always made her smile. She still couldn’t believe she could actually afford it, it was absolutely amazing. It was a loft apartment, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and about fifteen hundred square feet. It was extremely modern, with all black appliances, white brick walls, eighteen foot high ceilings, and polished cement floors. It was actually an old factory, which had been converted into loft apartments, and she loved it.

She dropped her briefcase in her extra bedroom, which she had made her office away from the office, ecstatic that tomorrow would be the first Saturday in almost four months that she wouldn’t have to spend all day cooped up in there. After that, she made her way to her master bedroom, checking the answering machine for messages before going into her closet to change.

She slipped into a simple, short black skirt and a deep red shirt with a plunging v-neck and three-quarter length sleeves. She threw on her knee high black boots before scurrying into the bathroom and taking her hair out of the bun she wore it in to work, her long hair falling in a cascade of soft waves around her shoulders. She applied the tiniest bit of lip gloss before grabbing her purse and running back out the door.

Another thirty minutes later, she finally made it to Scruffy’s, making her way through the crowd and over to the table where her friends were already seated. “Hey!” She greeted, plopping down into the empty chair.

“Hey!” Steph, Chelsea, Crystal and Renae yelled back, even though it wasn’t that loud in there and she was right in front of them.

“What’d I miss?” Liz asked, setting her purse on her lap and signaling the waitress over. She ordered a margarita before turning back to the table.

“Nothing at all.” Chelsea informed her, taking a drag off her cigarette. “We were just wondering if you’d gotten lost or something.”

“Nope, just running a little late.” Liz replied, handing her credit card to the waitress and telling her to start a tab.

“Planning on doing a little drinking tonight?” Renae asked, smiling into her Long Island Iced Tea.

“Maybe a little...” Liz smiled at them. They knew how hard she worked all week, and how hard she worked on most weekends. The fact that they actually got her away from her work was a miracle in itself, so she was going to enjoy the freedom of not having to stress over whether or not the right fabric would be sent over from India, and party before she got sucked into another account.

“Oh! Game time!” Steph squealed, pointing at the big screen TV behind Liz.

“Oh, and the Celtics are playing!” Crystal squealed back.

At that, Liz literally got nauseous, grimacing at how much she didn’t want to turn around, yet knowing that there was not way in hell she couldn’t.

“There he is!” Chelsea sighed, resting her chin in her hand as she gazed lovingly at the television screen. Liz rolled her eyes as Crystal and Steph followed suit.

Liz finally gave up her internal battle, turning around and looking at the screen just as it flashed back to Max, decked out in the Celtics jersey, warming up for the game. She only let herself look for a few seconds before she turned back around, staring into her drink, rather than looking up and risking seeing Max again.

“What’s up with you, Liz?” Renae finally asked. “How is it that you’re the only woman on the entire planet who doesn’t think he’s the most gorgeous man they’ve ever seen?”

Liz closed her eyes and took a deep breath before looking up at Renae. “Has it ever crossed your mind that he’s probably like every other guy in the world? Selfish, conceited, only worried about what’s best for him, only after one thing and generally not giving a fuck about anything else?” She snapped, then immediately looking back down into her drink.

“Calm down, Liz. Geez.” Crystal looked around the table at everyone’s shocked expression. “Know him personally or something?” She laughed, causing the other girls to laugh along with her.

Liz had learned not to tell people that once upon a time, many, many years ago, she was involved with Max. After they found out, that’s all they cared about, wanting to know every little detail about Max and wanting to know if Liz could still get in touch with him. Liz made it a point to never bring Max up in conversations or be apart of conversations where he was being talked about. That proved a lot harder to do over the years as Max evolved into one of the most sought-after, most talked about, and most recognized men in the NBA.

Thankfully, Liz was saved from having to laugh it off or flat-out lie to her friends when her cell phone started ringing. She quickly dug through her purse, finding her cell phone and flipping it open. “Hello?”

“Hola, Chica!”

Liz smiled upon hearing the voice of one of her oldest and dearest friends in the whole world, Maria DeLuca. “Hey! What are you doin?” Liz asked, covering her ear in hopes of hearing Maria better.

“Oh, you know... just got done buying a new house, the usual.” Maria said, barely containing her excitement.

“You guys finally bought a house?” Liz squealed. “About time you two got out of that apartment! Now, if you guys will finally just get married, you’ll be living the American dream!”

“Yeah, well, you know Michael.” Maria flippantly responded. Maria had been dating Michael Guerin since high school, and they had yet to actually tie the knot. They’d been living together since they graduated, and Michael had finally given into Maria’s constant badgering and asked him to marry her almost a year and a half before, but had made no progress in actually getting married. He figured they’d been together long enough, a piece of paper wasn’t going to change anything. “Oh, you should see the house, Lizzie! Its beautiful! Its four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, all the rooms are enormous! Walk in closets, a huge yard, three car garage!” Maria gushed.

“That’s amazing, Maria! Congratulations! You guys sound like you’re doing really well.” Liz smiled, happy that her friends were getting things together.

“Well, the restaurant is doing better than ever, and you know how Michael squirrels his money away, never spending more than absolutely necessary.” Maria continues. Michael is part owner in one of the swankiest restaurants in Roswell, as well as head chef.

“I still find it hard to believe that he can do that while being engaged to you, Miss I-Can’t-Go-Two-Days-Without-Shopping.” Liz laughs.

“Well, we balance each other out. That’s the only reason we haven’t killed each other yet.” Maria giggles. “One needs the other to get through the day. Oh, but we got way off topic, because believe it or not, I actually called for a reason.”

“And that reason would be?...” Liz prodded, looking over and catching another glimpse of Max on the TV.

“Well... Michael and I started talking about how we wanted to decorate the house, which resulted in a very large argument and him having to sleep on the sofa-bed for a night, and we agreed that we’d love it if you would come out and help us design it.” Maria rushed out. “So... will you? Please?”

“Maria, you know I will! I’d be happy too! You caught me at a great time too, I just finished the house I was working on today, and my boss hasn’t sent another client my way yet, so I’ll call her as soon as we get off the phone and let her know that I have a new client and I’ll need to go out of town for a few months.” Liz said, practically bouncing in her seat with excitement. She couldn’t wait to see Maria again.

“Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!” Maria chanted. “I owe you!”

“No you don’t. We’re best friends, Maria. Its what we do.”

They chatted for a few more minutes before they hung up and Liz quickly called her boss to let her know about her new project. Liz was given the go-ahead, so she proceeded to call the airlines and book a flight out to New Mexico in two days.

Max strode through the livingroom of his two-story home in Boston, Massachusetts with a smile stretching from ear to ear. They had won the game by well over twenty points, and Max was hosting a party in celebration of the win, as per usual, which was in full-swing.

He high-five-d his team mates as he passed them on his way to the kitchen to get another beer, not even stopping to mingle with any of the ladies that were scattered around the house, all vying for his attention. He’d simply shoot them a smile, occasionally adding a wink if he thought they were really hot, and then kept going. He knew that they’d come find him later anyway.

Max stepped into the kitchen, nodding at the guys who had gathered around the kitchen table to play cards, before grabbing a beer out of the fridge, opening it and taking a long drink.

Small hands snaked around his waist, coming to rest right above the snap on his jeans. Max glanced down at them, then over his shoulder as the woman belonging to the hands pressed herself against his side as she came around to stand in front of him.

“You played really well tonight.” She said, nibbling on her bottom lip seductively and looking up at Max from beneath her eyelashes.

She was beautiful, Max couldn’t deny that. She was about 5'6, with long blonde hair that curled around her shoulders and fell halfway down her back. She was well-tanned, as if just back from a vacation in the Bahamas, but Max knew she had a tanning bed to thank for her color, as did almost all the other girls at the party. Her big, brown eyes looked up at him expectantly, waiting for a response. He knew the response she was looking for, an invite for a tour of the house, both knowing the tour would end in the bedroom.

“Thanks.” Max simply replied, smirking at her before removing her arms from around his waist and walking over to the table where the card game was going on.

Once Max reached his destination, he couldn’t stop himself from sneaking a quick glance over to where the girl still stood, obviously shocked that Max had showed such disinterest in her. She pouted for a moment before turning and walking out of the kitchen.

Max shook his head at the predictability of the girls that always seemed to end up at the parties. He had no idea how they got there, he sure as hell didn’t invite them, but they ended up there after every game, Max could always count on that.

Every party was the same. The guys would drink and unwind after the big win, or to get over the frustration of a loose and the girls would flock to the guys, willing to give up every shred of pride, dignity and self-worth, just for the chance at an hour or two in the sack with one of the guys... and Max was number one on the most wanted list.

The most frustrating thing for all the girls was that Max never took any of them to bed. Max was known to be one of the biggest flirts on the entire team, but he never followed through with any of the girls.

“You wanna get in on the game, Evans?” Theo looked up at Max as he started shuffling the cards.

“No, I’m cool.” Max said, shaking his head. “Just making the rounds, making sure all you guys are behaving yourselves.”

“Yeah, right.” They all chorused, laughing. Max simply shook his head, wished them luck in their game and walked back towards the livingroom.

As soon as he entered the room, all female eyes immediately went to him, even if the girls were already in a conversation with another guy. He saw two girls getting ready to approach him, but thankfully, he was saved by the phone.

His cell phone rang to life in his pocket, and he quickly pulled it out, looking at the display screen. A picture of his twin sister, Isabel smiled back at him. He couldn’t help but smile back at the picture. He’d taken it during his last trip back home, shortly after he had purchased his camera phone.

He quickly flipped the phone open, bringing the phone to his ear. “Hey, little sister.”

“Max, you’re like three minutes older than me.” Isabel replied, trying to sound annoyed, but Max could tell by her tone that she was smiling.

“Still makes me older...” Max teased, making his way out of the livingroom onto the back patio for a little peace and quiet.

“I still maintain that you kicked me out of the way, I was supposed to be older.” Isabel argued.

Max smiled at their usual banter. He missed his sister, having not been able to make it back home to see her for over a year. He knew that she was still plenty upset that he’d missed her wedding. He tried his hardest to get there, making sure that she knew exactly when he was playing, as to plan the wedding around his schedule. He would have made it too, if his plane hadn’t gotten snowed in. He was still kicking himself in the ass for not taking the flight the day before, but instead staying home to attend one of the parties with the team. “What’s up?” He asked, forcing his train of thought elsewhere.

“I was just calling to see what you were doing, although I already know the answer.” She stated, matter-of-factly.

“Oh, you do, huh? What am I doing?” Max asked.

“You’re having a party at your house because you guys won tonight.” Isabel said, smiling to herself when her statement was met with silence from Max. She’d hit the nail right on the head. “I know you too well.”

“Don’t sound so smug about it, you don’t know me.” Max said.

Isabel laughed, a little too hard as far as Max was concerned, but quickly recovered. “Ok, if that’s what you want to think...” She trailed off.

“Did you call to make fun of my predictability, or was there actually something you wanted?” Max asked, glancing over his shoulder and looking into the livingroom to make sure everything was still running smoothly.

“Ok, I know you want to get back to your party, so I’ll try to make this quick.” Isabel started. “I was just wondering if I should prepare the guest room anytime soon. In case someone wanted to come out and see me? Like, oh, I dunno... my brother who hasn’t even seen my new house yet?”

Max sighed. He loved what he did for a living, he couldn’t imagine doing anything else but playing pro ball, but he hated his schedule, and he hated the fact that he never got to go home and see his family, or have any time for a girlfriend, if he decided he wanted to have one. “Isabel, you know that I would love to come out there and see you. I hate myself for missing your wedding, and for not having the time to come out there, but you know the drill. I don’t make the schedule, and I don’t have the power to make changes in the schedule. I wish I did, believe me.”

“I know, Max. I’m not trying to make you feel bad, but I want you to come back home! Is that so wrong? I haven’t seen you in a year! That’s over 365 days without so much as five minutes, spent together, in person! You HAVE to come home! Its mandatory that I make sure that you’re not letting all those fake-breasted bimbos rubbing themselves on you daily inflate your ego. No matter how much of a star you are, you’re still from Roswell. You’re still a small-town boy, and damn it, I swear on my life, if you don’t take a break, get on a fucking airplane and get out here to see me, not to mention our parents! I will fly over there, break your legs, and drag you back here!”

By the end of her speech, Max was forced to hold the phone an arms length away from his ear. He knew she was mad at him, but he didn’t know she was this mad. Guilt washed over him as he thought about everything he’d missed... his sisters wedding, her birthday, his parents birthdays, his best friends engagement. “I’m sorry, Iz. I hate that I don’t get to come home as much as I’d like to, but as I already said, its out of my hands.”

“Don’t give me that shit, Max!” Isabel yelled into the phone, breaking Max’s heart when he heard her voice break. “Its bullshit. If you really wanted to come home, you could! You’re not the only person on that damn basketball team, and they won’t fall apart if you aren’t there for a week.”

Max pinched the bridge of his nose with his index finger and thumb before dropping back into one of the patio chairs. He looked up at the sky, able to see just a handful of stars due to all the lights in the city. He could remember when he was a kid, he used to look up at the sky and be awe-struck of the million tiny stars twinkling back at him. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry, Max.” Isabel sniffled. “Be here.”

“Ok, check this. I have absolutely no time off for the next two months, but then I have a week where I have no prior plans or things I have to do. I’m gonna keep my calendar clear, and so are you. I’ll see you in two months.” Max said, knowing that he had to go back home no matter what came up. He needed the break, he needed to be back home with his family and friends- the people who really knew him.

“R-really?” Isabel stammered, the excitement evident in her voice.

“Really, really.” Max stated, leaving no room for doubt.

Isabel screamed into the phone, making Max rip the phone away from his ear and rub it, in hopes of alleviating some of the pain her high-pitched squeal had inflicted. “In two months? You promise?”

“I promise.” Max confirmed.

“Ohmigod! You’re actually gonna come home! You’d never make a promise to me and not keep it! I have to call mom and dad! I have to start working on the guest room, its not even close to being ready for people to stay in it! Oh, and I have to...” Isabel started rambling, and Max could picture her running for the nearest blank piece of paper to start a list of all the things she had to do.

“Isabel! You have two months, calm down!” Max laughed. “I gotta go, though. I’ll talk to you soon, ok?”

“Yeah, ok! Bye Max!” Isabel said, quickly hanging up and tossing her cell phone onto the couch next to her. She fell back into the cushions, a smile stretched across her face.

Maria wandered into the livingroom from the kitchen, her cell phone in her hand. She plopped down onto the couch next to Isabel. “How did it go?”

Isabel looked over at Maria, nodding. “He has a week off, two months from now. He promised he’d be here, and he knows better than to break a promise to me. He’ll be here.” She sighed, content with what she had pulled off. “How did it go with you?”

Maria smiled. “She’ll be here in two days, and she asked for a few months off. So, we’re gonna have to try to hold her up as much as possible so her and Max end up here at the same time.”

“That’s not a problem. It’s gonna take you and Michael forever to decide on anything anyway.” Isabel pointed out.

“Speak of the devil...” Maria said, looking towards Isabel’s front door as Michael and Alex walked in, carting with them their golf clubs. “How was the golf course?”

“Sucked.” Michael grunting, sliding his golf bag off his shoulder. It hit the floor with a loud ‘thud’ which only seemed to piss Michael off more, so he gave it a few kicks for good measure. “I lost like five bucks worth of golf balls in the damn lake. I hate golfing!”

“Ditto.” Alex grumbled, walking into the livingroom and dropping down into one of the recliners. Michael followed him and fell into the recliner next to him. “Dude, why did we think we could pull that off?”

“Fuck if I know.” Michael said, crossing his arms over his chest and regarding the girls. “Why do you two look so happy?”

Maria and Isabel looked at each other, giggling. “No reason. Maria just got done talking to Liz, and I just got off the phone with Max. We’re happy we got to catch up with two people that we miss, thats all.” Maria said, trying to sound really convincing.

“Yeah, I’m sure that’s all it is.” Michael narrowed his eyes at them before slowly getting up from the comfort of the chair to go get something to drink from the kitchen. “We already warned you guys that this little scheme of yours is gonna backfire in your faces, but you won’t listen, so just do us a favor and don’t drag us down with you when you go, ok?”

“Whatever you say, babe.” Maria replied. She knew this plan would work. It had to work. It was too well thought out and planned for it to not work. Besides, everything for Max and Liz was riding on this plan working.

A/N - So here I am finally with Chapter 2. Just want to thank all of you for the great feedback...sorry I have no better words right now...LOL...

Edited to add: Yeah so I just remembered what I needed to tell you guys...a part of this picks up right where the Pro left off

Chapter 2

She stared out the window, watching the world pass her by. Going home felt like the right thing to do, but that didn’t mean she was looking forward to it.

Roswell held so many memories for Liz. Some of which were the best of her life, others that still left her feeling empty and hurt. The stewardess asked if she’d like a drink as she passed by, but Liz declined. She felt sick, she felt nervous but most importantly she felt... alone.

Liz had been trying to catch a few hours of sleep to try to keep her mind from racing, but to no avail. The memories slammed through her mind like a freight train and she was defenseless to stop them.

All the memories were of him. He was supposed to love her forever, he was supposed to be there for her, but those were broken promises. As much as Liz tried to convince herself that she didn’t still care for him, she knew she was just lying to herself. It was pointless to try and argue that fact. He was a part of her heart-- always had been, always would be.

She decided to get up and walk to the rest room to wash her face, hoping to clear her mind. However, by the time she made it back to her seat the memories washed over her and she leaned back in her seat and waited for the past to relive itself in her heart.

It was their sophomore year of college and after the big game Max had won for the team. After they celebrated with all their friends, Liz went home to prepare for her own private celebration with Max. She loved him so much and she was so proud of him... she wanted to make sure he knew that. They spent the entire night together and woke up the next morning in each other’s arms. Liz knew she never wanted to be with anyone else. Max was it for her.

That was a good time, a good memory... one of her last good memories with Max. After that night, things changed, not only for Max, but for their relationship as well.

He had been away at training camp and he was finally done with it and heading back home to her.

The moment he arrived, Liz was overwhelmed with so many emotions. She missed him and she was so happy to see him again. After a few minutes of reacquainting themselves they made their way into the living room, since Max had suddenly looked so serious.

“Sure Max, we can talk. About what?” Liz was confused. He didn’t look that excited to see her, and if she was honest with herself, he looked as if he was overcome with dread. Which left her very worried.

She watched as he took a seat on the couch and reached out for her to join him. She settled herself in his lap and he wrapped his arms around her waist. Why did she think he wasn’t going to tell her something she wanted to hear?

“Liz, you know I love you, right?”

“Of course Max. What kind of a question is that?” She tried to read his eyes, to get some kind of feel for what he was thinking, but she was left with no answers. She would have to wait until he said what he needed to say.

“I just want to make sure you know that I love you Liz and I don’t know how to say this.”

“Say what?” Liz asked hesitantly. Surely he wasn’t breaking up with her. No, she was over reacting he was probably going to tell her something about training camp or…

“I think we need to break up Liz.”

“What?! Max…what are you talking about? Break up? Where is this coming from?” She tried to bite back her tears, but not only were they evident in her eyes, but in her voice as well. How could he do this to them?

“Liz, you don’t understand the schedule they have me on…I’ll never be around. It’s too much to ask you to wait for me.” She watched the emotions cross his face; she could tell he didn’t want to do it but then why was he? She could wait for him, he didn’t even ask.

“So that’s it? You get to decide for the both of us? We are in a relationship Max and not a short term one either. I think I deserve to choose what I want to do with my life!” Liz rose to her feet and paced in front of him. This was not happening; that was the only thought that kept crossing her mind. He was not breaking her heart... he was not killing her with his words.

“You don’t understand Liz. It wouldn’t be fair. I won’t be home probably more than a few days during the year for God only knows how long. How you can you have a life, sitting at home waiting for me to show up? That’s not a relationship. You deserve more than that and I wish I could give you more... I wish I could give you your forever, but I can’t.” His voice was thick with emotions, and as bad as Liz felt for him knowing that maybe he didn’t want to do that, maybe he didn’t mean to break her heart, she knew that he did it anyway and no matter what she said, she knew he wasn’t changing his mind.

“Then I guess this is it then, right? You go off and be a big star, and one day when you’re done with everything you can remember what we had and how you threw it away without a second thought.” Liz said sarcastically and then watched as Max dropped to his knees and encircled her waist pleading with her to not be like that. “How can you ask anything of me? How! You’re telling me you don’t want to be with me and that all the dreams I had for us were for nothing. I don’t…why now, Max? You know I would be with you, that I would wait for you.” She cried out to him softly.

“You’d resent me, baby. You don’t think you would but I know you better than you know yourself. And while for a few months it would be okay, maybe even a year, but years Liz…years? I have faith in you and our love, but after a while it would bring you down and I don’t want that for you. I don’t want you to resent me for ruining your life.”

“So this is better? Being without you? I’m sorry Max but I don’t see how it’s better without you. I don’t see how my life would be better without…you.” Liz fell to her knees and allowed Max to hold her one last time, to kiss her one last time before they said their goodbye.

“Miss, we are about to land.” Liz was broken from her thoughts. She had thought that thinking about them would help her be angry again, so she could push past the hurt and just stay furious with Max.

She was wrong. It only left her wanting. Wanting for him, for what they had. She knew they would never be together again, especially now that he’s a very successful player. That dream was over, and Liz knew that she needed to move on with her life. Telling her mind was the easy part; not listening to her heart was the hard part.

****

After her plane landed, Liz picked up her rental car and made her way through the familiar streets of Roswell. As she passed through the downtown area, she was hit with so many more memories from her past.

She passed by the places where she and Max met so many summers ago, where they had their first date and where he kissed her for the first time in his Jeep. Liz struggled to push through her thoughts and feelings, not wanting them to drag her down. She was going to see her best friend and she wasn’t going to be anything but happy today.

She had called Maria to get directions, Liz was very familiar with the area but she wanted to make sure she had the right house. A few minutes later she pulled up to a two story, light beige brick house that was simply breathtaking.

“Liz!” Maria flung open the front door as soon as she saw her best friend pull up. Liz didn’t even have a chance to put the car in park before Maria was standing by the driver’s side door to pull her friend out.

“I missed you so much!” Maria said while anxiously trying to pull Liz from the car.

“Maria, do you think I could put the car in park before it rolls down the damn street?” Liz said trying to sound serious, but feeling just as giddy as her best friend.

“Oh, shit! Sorry. Just hurry.” Liz watched as Maria walked back to the sidewalk. After parking the car they stood in front of one another without a single word passing between them. Then suddenly Maria lunged at Liz and both girls wrapped their arms around one another.

“I missed you Maria, you don’t know how much.” Liz said while the tears began to sting her eyes. She never realized how much she missed seeing Maria and just being around her.

“Let’s get inside before people start to think you’re my lesbian lover or some shit like that.” Liz just shook her head; she definitely missed Maria’s sense of humor. They made their way up to the front steps but Liz stopped realizing she forgot to take her bags out of the car.

“What the hell do you think Michael is for?” Maria waved Liz on shaking her head.

A few minutes later Maria was in the middle of giving Liz the grand tour of the house, starting with the enormous and completely modern kitchen. “Wow, Maria this is just amazing,” She commented sounding somewhat awed. Liz knew that the kitchen was really Michael’s haven. After all he isn’t the part owner of one of the swankiest restaurants in Roswell, as well as the head chef, for nothing.

“Liz, what are you drooling over? I mean, you are inside some of the biggest houses on a daily basis, making them look all great. I’m sure this is nothing compared to that.” Liz didn’t even get to comment on that, because Maria was already dragging her through the rest of the house.

Finally about forty-five minutes later, they were done with the tour and Maria was still talking about the plans her and Michael have for the house. “Maria, it all sounds great. Don’t worry, we’ll have this place done in no time.” She paused for a moment, her eyebrows drawing together. “By the way where is Michael?”

“Did someone request my presence?” Michael said while closing the front door. Both girls were now in the living room, and he was just waiting for his fiancé to come back with a sarcastic comment.

“Oh please! Just cause she said your name didn’t mean she actually wanted you to show up.” Maria said, already making her way towards the door to greet him properly. Liz couldn’t help but watch them interact, and feel somewhat saddened. She missed that, missed having someone to tell all her problems to, having someone to just be there to hold and kiss her. What it came down to was that she missed Max, and she didn’t want to.

“Liz Parker, I see you decided to join the rest of us bottom feeders and make an appearance.” Michael teased her lightly, already helping her to her feet and wrapping his arms around her. Liz simply slapped his back gently and allowed him to hold her for a few seconds. She missed him too. Liz was finding it harder and harder to not fall into a depressed state. “Nice to see you, too, Michael. Now, I need you to go get my bags out of my car.” Liz said taking her seat back on the couch, next to where Maria had settled back.

“You know, I don’t know why I try. All you women are the same.” Michael said dragging his feet to the door he just came from to get Liz’s bags.

“So Liz, tell me, you have a hot guy waiting for you at home or are you still playing the teenaged girl who got her heart broken bit?”

“Maria! You know it wasn’t like that.” Liz said crossing her arms over her chest and pouting. “Besides, if you’re referring to Max, we were twenty when we broke up, not teenagers.”

“Same difference.” Maria rolled her eyes. “You know I love teasing you Liz. Seriously though, is there anybody?” Maria asked and then wanted to stick her foot in her mouth when she caught a glimpse of the sad expression on her friends face.

“No, there isn’t anyone out there for me. I think I might just stay single forever. It’s better that way. Less drama.” Liz shrugged her shoulders, trying to brush off the sudden urge to throw herself into Maria’s arms and cry like a baby.

“Damn Liz, are you planning on staying forever?” Michael said slamming the front door and bringing Liz’s bags further into the living room. The moment he looked up and saw that both girls no longer had smiles on their faces; he wanted to groan out loud for being the only man in the room.

“Have you…I mean, do you guys talk to Max?” Liz said softly, not looking up from her lap. Michael crossed the room and took a seat beside his fiancé.

“Liz, do you really want to talk about Max?” Maria asked. She didn’t want Liz to be upset, but a big part of her was hoping that Liz asked because she’s ready to forgive him.

Michael, on the other hand, knew what Maria was up to. He knew that she meant no harm but that didn’t mean people weren’t going to end up hurt in the end.

“Liz, I talk to Max at least once a week.” Michael admitted softly. It wasn’t a surprise to Liz at all. They were best friends as long as she could remember, but she ached to know how he was doing. Was he missing her? Was he sorry? Or did he not even care anymore? That’s what held Liz back from asking all this time, but she needed to know now.

“I figured as much. How about you Maria? Do you?”

“Yeah, sometimes. When he has time and when Michael’s not yanking the phone away from my ear.” Maria ribbed Michael gently, in hopes of keeping the mood light.

“So, so how is he?” Liz asked, still not able to look Michael in the eyes, but she managed a glace at Maria.

“He’s doing good. You know, living the rich life but it’s lonely, too. He’s never home, you know that though. I mean, he even missed Isabel’s wedding.” Maria said softly.

“I know he did.” It was obvious to Liz long ago that Max was not exaggerating about how busy his schedule would be. That didn’t mean that she just accepted the fact that he was the one that decided to end their relationship. It also didn’t mean that Liz couldn’t handle being away from him. Hell, she had been without him for years and she was surviving just fine.

“I didn’t think you would care.” Maria paused. “Do you?” Maria asked hesitantly. She didn’t want to push Liz, but she also wanted to know what was going on in her head.

“I don’t care. I just wondered that’s all. I’m glad he’s doing well; I would never wish him anything but the best. So next time you talk to him you can tell him I said hello.” Wait! Did she just say that? No she didn’t, she did not just say that!

“Really?” Michael almost choked from Liz’s words. Surely Liz was still pissed off that Max broke up with her, and broke her heart. Maybe he was wrong and Maria was right after all, he thought.

“Yeah right! Like I give a shit what he’s doing? Please, I have much more important things to do then to worry about Max spending his millions and having girls fall at his feet or…” Liz realized she was ranting and she didn’t like it one bit, so she stopped. She took a deep breath, shook her head and plastered on a smile, “I’m actually kind of hungry. How about we get something to eat?” Liz asked hopping up from the couch, leaving Maria and Michael to stare at one another in confusion.

****

To help break the tension, Maria decided to call Isabel and Alex over for dinner. Michael was already out back firing up the barbeque and as soon as Alex arrived, he greeted Liz and made his way into the backyard to join Michael.

The girls were currently standing in the kitchen gathering the rest of the food to take outside. Isabel had been very uncertain when Maria called her to come over. It wasn’t because her and Liz weren’t friends, it was mainly because Isabel knew what Maria and her had planned for Max and Liz, and a part of her was terrified that things would blow up in their faces.

“So, Isabel are you enjoying your new home?” Liz said still trying to distract her mind from screaming at her that she was in the room with Max’s sister. She was trying desperately not to think of him, and here was a tall, blonde, glaring reminder of him. Liz loved Isabel; they had always been close. Never as close as her and Maria, but close enough. When the breakup came, Isabel was one of the first people to call her and make sure she was okay. Liz knew if it weren’t for having these two women in her life, she wouldn’t have made it through that.

“Yes, we are. I just never knew how much work went into it though. Slowly but surely we’re getting things done and maybe you can offer your services for a few of our rooms?” She glanced at Liz hopefully. Isabel knew that it hurt Liz to look at her; she knew she was a huge reminder of Max, but was thankful that Liz looked past that and didn’t hold any grudges.

“Of course! You don’t even have to ask, I was going to offer anyway.” Liz smiled and Maria announced that the men were hungry so they needed to hurry up.

“Oh all right! Damn, they act like they haven’t eaten at all today.” Isabel said while following Maria and Liz outside.

A few minutes later, Michael and Maria were arguing about what to cook first, while Isabel and Alex acted as referees. Liz just sat back on her lounge chair with her eyes closed. No matter how hard she tried she couldn’t escape her thoughts of Max. It was like being back in Roswell opened a floodgate to her heart. She just wished it would close shut already.

Isabel turned to Liz and saw her lying back with her eyes closed. Isabel knew exactly what Liz was thinking about, or rather who she was thinking about. It was many years ago, but Isabel will never forget the look on her brother’s face when he told her the news.

“Max, what’s wrong? Is Liz okay?” Isabel said taking a seat next to her brother on the edge of his bed. He had just gotten home and she could tell something was upsetting him.

“No, she’s not Iz. I don’t know if she will ever be.” He answered her sadly.

“What? Why?” Isabel was starting to get worried, what did he mean?

“I…I broke up with her.” She saw his head drop and she resisted the urge to slap him in the back of the head.

“Why would you do that? I don’t understand. You love her, right?”

“Yes! Of course I love her!”

“Then why?”

“I had to do it Isabel. I can’t explain it right now, but she’ll understand later on.”

After a few minutes to trying to pry information out of him she gave up and called Liz, telling her how sorry she was. From the moment Liz picked up the phone, Isabel knew it would be a long time before Liz got over her brother, if ever.

“I can’t believe he did this to you Liz. I mean, what the hell is he thinking? You guys are supposed to be together forever and he just threw it all away.” Isabel said pulling Liz into a tight embrace as soon as she arrived at her house the next day.

“I’m okay Isabel, really. Just thank you for being here. I mean, I know he’s your brother and…”

“And nothing Liz! You’re my friend and he hurt you and I’m so sorry. I wish I could make him change his mind but…”

“He’s stubborn Isabel, just like you. He’s already made up his mind and if I can’t change it, no one can.” Liz smiled sadly at her ex’s sister. Isabel stayed with her the entire day and they just talked about whatever Liz wanted, until Maria arrived after work. All three girls sat up the entire night talking about everything and anything until Liz finally fell asleep.

At that moment Isabel’s heart broke for Liz. She knew how much Liz loved her brother, and she hoped that one day they would find their way back to each other and the love the had.

That’s why Isabel and Maria were more than determined to set things straight. They knew that Liz missed Max just as much as he missed her. The only problem was trying to convince the both of them of that fact.

Tanya and I want to thank everyone for your FB, its always interesting to read what ya'll are thinking so far.

We're slightly shocked about the intense hate that ya'll seem to have for Max, without even getting his thoughts on everything yet... All we can say about that is, just give him a chance. He might surpise ya.

Also, to Tiff(sweetbrowneyes) and Alien614-- you two really picked up on what we were trying to say here.

On with the next chapter... Enjoy!

Chapter Three

Liz leisurely strolled down Roswell’s main drag. It was a beautiful Thursday afternoon, and after having lunch with her parents, she decided to do a little shopping. Maybe pick up a few things to work into her design for Michael and Maria’s house.

So far, everything had gone fairly smoothly. Almost the entire house had been painted, most of the furniture and tables had been picked out, the only thing left to do was the livingroom.

Liz hadn’t anticipated this project being as hard as it had turned out to be. She thought that working for celebrities was going to be tough, she was sorely mistaken. Her last client was a walk in the park compared to working with Maria and Michael.

Liz still marveled at the fact that those two were still together. They disagreed on absolutely every idea Liz had for the house. The master bedroom alone took almost a whole month to finish.

Thankfully, everything was coming together, and the house would shortly be done. Earlier that day, Liz and Maria had taken a trip to Home Depot and finalized the color choice. They’d finally decided on a light beige color- something warm and inviting, but nothing too girly, otherwise Michael would throw another temper-tantrum. Not that Liz wasn’t still anticipating him having one, but one could hope.

As she walked back towards her car, she looked across the street, stopping abruptly. She let out a long, shaky breath, before squaring her shoulders and crossing the street. She was determined to face this place, and not let it get to her.

As she walked deeper into the park, she headed directly towards the basketball court. She took long, purposeful strides until she came to her destination. She set her shopping bags down on the ground, next to the tree truck, before folding herself down, leaning back against the tree... the exact tree she had been sitting against the day she met Max.

She slowly swept her gaze over the whole park, feeling as though she has been transported back in time, as everything looked exactly the same.

Her eyes finally settled on the basketball court, watching as two teenage boys warmed up for what looked like a one-on-one game.

She took a deep breath, looking down and playing with the hem on her knee-length skirt. She hated that she still had feelings for Max. She cursed him everyday for making her fall in love with him, and then leaving her.

She felt tears stinging at her eyes, and she quickly muttered a few curses before willing them to go away. She made a promise to herself a long time ago, that no matter what, she would never shed another tear over Max Evans. He wasn’t worth it, and she wouldn’t let herself forget that.

She was broken out of her thoughts by the shrill ringing of her cell phone. She quickly reached over and rummaged through her purse, finding the phone and checking the caller ID.

A smile tugged at the corners of her lips as she looked at the display window. She flipped open her phone, before bringing it up to her ear. “Hey!”

“What’s up bitch?!” Renae yelled into the phone, laughing.

Liz laughed, her previous bad mood already gone. “Oh, you know. Same shit, different day.” Liz replied, cradling the phone between her shoulder and her ear, picking at her nails. “How’s everything going back there?”

“Fine, nothing new to report.” Renae said. “When are you coming home?”

Liz sighed. “I don’t know, Nae. You have no idea how hard it is to work with Michael and Maria... I swear, if they have one more argument about where they want the couch... I’m going to have to kill them both myself.”

“Sounds like you’re having a great time.” Renae joked, laughing.

“Haha, laugh it up.” Liz muttered. “Besides, like its possible to have a ‘great time’ in this town. It’s nothing but dust and desert. Now I remember why I moved out of here.”

“Sounds very exciting, I’m sorry that I’m missing it. You’ll send me a postcard, right?” Renae replied. “So, what are you doing right now?”

“Sitting in the park.” Liz said, before even thinking about it. Now she had to try to tip-toe around why she was actually in the park to begin with. She was a terrible lier, so Renae would know right away if she weren’t telling the truth.

“Why are you sitting in the park?” Renae asked, as expected. “Is there really that little to do around that town that you have to go to the park for kicks?”

As Liz opened her mouth to try her best at getting out of answering the question, someone yelled “Watch out!”

Liz looked up from her lap, dropping the phone, and putting her hands up just in time to catch the basketball that was flying at her face.

She stared at the orange leather ball, which was mere centimeters from her nose, and blew out a breath she was unaware she was holding.

The boys came rushing over, asking her if she was ok. It took a minute for her mind to register everything that was going on, but as soon as she did, she tossed the ball away from her in a panic.

She told the boys she was fine, and accepted the apologies that they were rushing out as she quickly got to her feet, grabbing her bags, purse and cell phone.

As she hurried from the park, she remembered that she had actually been talking on the phone, and that she could still hear Renae yelling on the other line. She quickly brought the phone back up to her ear. “Renae?”

“YES!” Renae screeched. “What the fuck was going on!? Are you ok?!”

Liz sighed. “Yeah, I’m fine. I almost got my nose smashed in by a basketball, but I’m fine.”

Liz half-listened as Renae went on and on about how that’s why she never goes to the park, as if almost getting hit in the face with a basketball is an everyday threat to people. Liz quickly located her rental car on the street and hurried over to it, tossing the bags in the trunk.

“Nae, I’m sorry, but I have to let you go. I have a meeting with Michael and Maria in ten minutes, and I’m already going to be running late. Call me back tomorrow, ok?” Liz hoped against hope that for once, Renae would believe her and get off the phone.

“Ok, fine. Stay away from the park, do you hear me? Its dangerous there!” Renae chided, before telling Liz that she loved her and missed her and wanted her to come back home soon.

Liz said goodbye, disconnecting the call as she slid into the drivers seat. She tossed her purse and cell phone on the passagener seat before resting her head against the steering wheel.

She marveled at her stupid, bad luck. She didn’t even want to think about how slim the chances of almost getting hit in the face with a basketball, in the exact same place were, unless someone was throwing the ball directly at your head.

She berated herself for even stopping in the park to begin with. It wasn’t as if she’d just gotten into town and that was the first time she’d actually seen the park again. She’d seen it plenty of times while out with Maria, or Isabel, or her mom. She’d just never let herself think about it, and she definitely didn’t allow herself to actually stop there.

She forced herself to not think about it anymore, instead she just put the keys in the ignition and headed back towards Maria’s house.

She flipped on the radio, needing more help than she thought to get her mind off of Max. That, however, didn’t work out for her, because as soon as the radio came on, the local DJ was babbling on and on about ‘hometown hero’ Max Evans, and his amazing plays in last nights game.

Liz mutters under her breath before hitting the radio dial, a little harder than necessary, and turning off the radio all together. Today, apparently, just wasn’t her day.

She quickly made her way to Michael and Maria’s house, groaning when she saw both of their cars in the driveway. She already knew she would be walking into a war-zone, but she didn’t have a choice, she’d have to deal with it eventually anyway.

She grabbed all of her stuff out of the car, hurrying up the walk-way and letting herself into the house.

“NO!” Michael screamed, causing Liz to jump slightly. “It’ll be a cold day in hell before I let you paint my livingroom that frou-frou girly color!”

“Frou-frou?!” Maria yelled back. “Girly?! You should count your lucky stars that I’m not having this livingroom painted pink!”

“I’ll toss you out a window if you get the color pink next to any of these walls, Maria! I swear!” Michael narrows his eyes at her.

Liz cautiously stepped into the livingroom, clearing her throat to make her presence known. They both looked her direction as she gave them a half-smile. “Hi.”

“Michael hates the beige.” Maria said, skipping any pleasantries and getting right into it.

“Yeah, I caught that.” Liz made her way into the room, setting down her bags in the doorway. “Is there any other color that you’d prefer to have the livingroom painted?”

Michael looked between the two girls, as they look at him. “I don’t know, I’m no good with this kinda thing.”

“Yeah, that’s why we hired Liz!” Maria erupted, “She knows what she’s doing! She does it for a living! How would you feel if she wandered into your kitchen and told you how to cook?!”

They started yelling again, but Liz quickly stepped in the middle of them. “Ok, just calm down. Michael, the paint is gonna dry darker than what you see in the can, ok? How about we just paint a little spot on the wall, let it dry, and then we’ll see what you think. If you don’t like it, we can go back to Home Depot, and they can mix another batch.” She looked back and forth between them. “Does that work for everyone?”

Maria and Michael both nodded, before moving and wrapping their arms around each other. Liz rolled her eyes at the predictably of the two of them. They fight, then they cuddle... and not long after they start cuddling, they start fighting again.

“So, what are we doing this weekend?” Liz asked, taking the painting tarp off one of the chairs to sit down. The painters were supposed to be done today, but because of the disagreement over the color, they hadn’t even started.

“We’re going camping!” Maria said, smiling and bouncing slightly from her seat on Michael’s lap.

“Hey, no bouncing!” Michael scolded. “Watch the goods, sweetie, you want kids, right?” Maria simply rolled her eyes at him.

“Camping?” Liz balked. “Like... pitch a tent, no electricity, no bathrooms, bugs, campfire... camping??”

“Yup.” Michael replied, just as the phone started ringing. He stood up, Maria in hand before setting her back down on the chair and going to answer it.

“I hate camping.” Liz whined.

Michael picked up the phone from the cradle, putting it to his ear before simply saying. “We’re going, learn to love it.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Max rummaged through his dresser drawers, searching high and low for his favorite shirt. He needed to get to bed, since he had an early flight tomorrow, but he couldn’t find his damn shirt. He was getting ready to call his maid and ask her where it was, he didn’t care what time it was, he needed his shirt.

“Damn it.” He muttered, throwing his arms up in frustration. “Ok, think. If I were my favorite blue shirt, where the hell would I be?” He laughed. “Well, if I was my shirt, I wouldn’t need to find myself, but... I’m talking to myself, so I think I’m crazy anyway.”

He pulled open another dresser drawer, throwing the contents of it all over the bedroom floor. He was only going to be back in Roswell for a week, and he’d already packed enough clothes for at least two, but he had to have his favorite shirt. It fit him perfectly, the arms of the shirt hugging his biceps, which all the ladies loved, therefore, making him love it, as well.

As he reached the bottom of the drawer, he froze, his hands full of clothes he was prepared to dump all over the floor with the rest of his wardrobe. He stood there for a minute before he finally dropped the clothes and reached back into the drawer.

He pulled out his college basketball jersey, holding it in his hands. He unfolded it, turning it over to stare at his last name, boldly displayed on the back. He sighed, closing his eyes as the memories came back to him as if it had all happened yesterday.

Max ran from his car towards the door to the apartment he and Liz were sharing. He’d just gotten down with basketball practice, preparing for his first college game. Today, the team had finally been given their jerseys and Max was so excited to show it to Liz.

He burst through the front door, searching the apartment for her. He found her sprawled on the livingroom floor, surrounded by her usual mountain of homework. She looked up at him the second she felt his presence in the room. “Hey baby. How was practice?” She asked, getting up off the floor and stretching before stepping over her books and giving him a soft, lingering kiss.

“You know, usual hell.” He smirked. “However, I did get something today.”

“What’d you get?” She asks, smiling at how excited he was about it.

He didn’t say anything, just pulled his jerseys out from behind his back, and holding them up in front of him proudly.

“Your jerseys!” Liz squealed, bouncing up and down excitedly. “Go try them on! I wanna see hot sexy you look!”

Max didn’t need to be told twice, he quickly ran into the bathroom, getting dressed in his gear quicker than he’d ever gotten dressed in his life. He poked his head out of the bathroom, his eyes landing on Liz, who was standing in front of the door. “You ready?”

“Oh, come on! Just come out of the bathroom!” Liz whined.

Max laughed before opening the door all the way, leaning against the door frame. “What do you think?”

“You look so sexy right now.” Liz admitted, walking over to him. She pressed her body up against his, running her hands down the front of his jersey. “Have I ever told you how much your basketball outfits turn me on?” She flirtatiously purred.

Max audibly gulped, closing his eyes as her hand snaked under his jersey and she ran her nails over his chest and down his abs, her fingers lingering dangerously close to the waistband of his shorts. “N-n-no. I, uhm, I don’t think you have.” He un-smoothly stuttered.

She giggled slightly, standing up on her tiptoes, whispering in his ear. “Well, it does. A lot.”

Before she knew what was going on, Max lifted her up, wrapping her legs around his waist and walking them to the bedroom. He laid her down on the bed, quickly pulling her shirt and bra off, as well as his jersey, his shorts and his boxers. He pulled her underwear down her legs, and bunched her skirt up around her waist before slipping into her welcoming body.

Max dropped back onto his bed, trying to shake the memory from his head. He set the jersey aside before refocusing his thoughts on packing. After searching for another half an hour, he realized that he’d already packed his blue shirt, so he zipped up his suitcase, set it by his bedroom door and got into bed.

He laid there for about fifteen minutes, thoughts of Liz taking over, before he switched on the light and reached for the phone. He dialed the familiar number and listened while the call rang through.

“We’re going, learn to love it.” Michael said to someone in the background before turning his attention to the phone. “Hello?”

“Who needs to lean to love what?” Max asked, mildly amused.

“Oh, hey man.” Michael said, sounding fairly surprised. He glanced back in the livingroom at Liz and Maria before going out the back door and taking a seat on the patio. “Maria was bitching about going camping.” Michael lied. He knew he should warn Max about what the girls were doing, but he knew it’d be the end of his life, so he opted to not.

“I thought Maria loved camping.” Max pointed out.

Michael was silent for a moment before finally thinking of something to say. “Yeah, she was just bitching that it was gonna be too hot this weekend, or some shit. Dude, you know I don’t normally listen when she talks. I only heard about half of what she said just a minute ago.”

Max laughed, obviously believing Michael. “No wonder you’re always in so much trouble, Mike. Pay attention when she talks.”

Michael grunted. “Maybe if she didn’t talk so damn much, I might pay more attention when she does say something.”

Max laughed for a minute, but immediatly sobered when he glanced over and saw his college jersey still laying on the other side of his bed. “Hey, I gotta ask you something, because I know you’ll be honest with me.”

“Alright.” Michael said, feeling a little guilty since he really wasn’t be honest with Max.

“Did I royally fuck up? I mean, did I totally just screw myself over?” Max asked.

Michael sat there for a minute, his eyebrows drawn together in confusion. “Dude, what the hell are you talking about?”

“With Liz.” Max elaborated, causing Michael to choke slightly and start coughing. “You ok?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Michael said once he’d recovered. “What about Liz?” Michael tried to act indifferent, like he wasn’t hiding something, but with Max it was really hard. They’d been best friends since they were born, and they always knew when the other was doing something sneaky.

“I was going through my drawers earlier looking for my shirt and I found my college basketball jersey, and I just started thinking, ya know? I had this amazing girl, everything I’d ever wanted in another person, and more. And I threw it all away. For what? To throw an orange ball through a hoop? Did I really fuck it up, Mike?”

Michael sat there for a minute, genuinely unsure of how to respond. “Max, dude. I’m not sure what to say to all that.” Michael sighed, and thought for a minute. “Ok, let me ask you something. You never bang any of these hot chicks that throw themselves at you. Why?” Before Max could respond, Michael continued. “Ok, I don’t really want an answer, I got something better. I want you to think about this. When you think about the future, say... five, ten years from now, you imagine that you’re married, right? Wife, maybe a few kids, a dog, a white picket fence and all that shit?”

“Well, yeah.” Max replied.

“Who do you picture there with you? In that imagine in your mind of the future and all that shit I just said... who are you sharing that with?” Michael asked, then wondered when the hell he became so damn smart. He’d have to remind himself to tell Maria about this one, maybe score a few points so she wouldn’t think he was a total dolt after all.

Max pictured that in his mind again, then it all hit him like a two ton heavy thing. “Liz.” He whispered. “I see Liz there with me.”

Michael was quiet for a minute, unsure what to say. Just as he was about to open his mouth, and hope something smart would come out of it like last time, Max’s laugh came through the phone. Michael pulled the phone away from his ear, looking at it funny before bringing it back to his ear. “Dude, are you ok?”

It took Max a few minutes to respond because he was laughing so hard. “I did.” He managed between laughter fits. “I fucked it all up so bad.”

“It might not be too late, man. You never know, right?” Michael said, trying to make Max feel better.

“It’s way too late. I messed up way too bad, and it’s been way too long. Even if I flew down to Atlanta and begged Liz, in person, to take me back, she’d laugh at me and slam the door in my face. I’m not that naive that I don’t know that.” Max said, angry with himself.

“Wait a second.” Michael said, thinking back over all the conversations he’d had with Max since him and Liz had broken up. “I never told you Liz was in Atlanta. How’d you know that?”

Max sighed. “I hired someone to find her for me, about a year ago. I was gonna go see her, and... I don’t know what I was expecting to happen, but I was gonna go see her. I lost my nerve before I went, but I’ve kept up with what’s been going on with her.”

“So, you’ve been stalking her. Nice, Max. What a way to win a lady back.” Michael sarcastically replied.

“I’m not stalking her!” Max defended himself. “Ok, maybe a little, but its not in a crazy way.”

“Its possible to not stalk someone in a crazy way?” Michael implored.

“Oh, shuddup, dude.” Max finally said, causing Michael to laugh. “I’m gonna let you go, I got an early flight tomorrow. I’ll see you when I get into town.”

“Alright, have a good flight. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Michael replied before saying goodbye and hanging up the phone.

Max put the phone back on the cradle before laying back down on the bed, putting his arms behind his head. “Yeah, I’m a freakin idiot.” He muttered to himself, closing his eyes to go to sleep.

Michael walked back in the house with the phone in his hand after hanging up with Max. He walked towards the livingroom and stopped before the girls saw him, really looking at Liz. Her and Maria were laughing about something or another, and for the first time, Michael realized that even now, when she laughed, she didn’t have that sparkle in her eyes like she did when she was with Max. If Liz was half as miserable as Max was, maybe this hair-brain scheme of Maria and Isabel’s might just be a good idea.

Chapter 4

“Are you sure you guys don’t want to rent a nice little cabin, with running water and comfortable beds?” Liz had been trying for the greater part of two hours to get Maria and Michael to change their minds about this camping trip. She knew it was all in vain, however, because at that this very moment, Maria and Michael were putting up the tents.

“Liz, get over it already. Seriously, you are giving me a fucking headache. At least let me eat before you start bitching again.” Michael bit out. He wasn’t too happy about the situation, had he known that Liz would be this uptight about sleeping outside, he would have rented her an entire hotel suite. Having one woman in his life that complained about everything was enough; he sure as hell wasn’t looking for another.

“Bitching? I’m sorry if being at one with nature is not my forte. I happen to enjoy the indoors. Which I guess Michael, would be the reason why I am an Interior Designer!” Liz yelled, fisting her hands at her sides. This was just too much. She hated, no, despised the outdoors.

“Oh come on Liz, it’ll be fun!” Maria said trying to stave off an argument that would surely begin if Liz didn’t calm down. Michael was usually very lenient when it came to Liz and her small fits, but not when he was hungry. Everyone knows you don’t mess with a man that hasn’t eaten.

“Fun? Ha! You have got to be kidding me. I have to sleep on the ground, with bugs and other miscellaneous creatures that crawl all over your body while you sleep. Oh! And please let’s not forget the wonderful bears that just roam around waiting for fresh meat!” Liz knew she was beginning to sound a bit irrational, but she’d rather sit in a room with her worst enemy than to sleep outside. Despite all of this, she knew it was a losing battle and she was getting tired of fighting. She huffed and took a seat on the log by the fire pit beside Michael, and watched him start a fire so they could eat and keep warm.

Maria watched Liz from the corner of her eye, she was beginning to wonder if her and Isabel’s plan was a good one. If Liz was this pissed off about sleeping outside, how would she react when…

“Maria!” Oh damn! Maria knew this would come up eventually, she just hoped it was much later in the evening.

“Yes, Liz?” Maria tried to act as innocent as possible, but she knew that Liz was onto her.

“Don’t, yes Liz me! Michael just informed me that if I have to use the bathroom I have to use a tree or some crazy shit like that?!” Liz stood in front of her best friend, trying hard to bite back the tears; she refused to use a tree as a toilet, she was not a dog. It was not going to happen, or so she believed.

“That is not what I said, Liz.” Michael came to stand behind Liz, knowing that he shouldn’t test her at that moment, but decided Maria would yell at him later for something that wasn’t his fault, so he should get his kicks where he could.

“Oh really? Please enlighten us then?” Liz turned around and crossed her arms over her chest; she was going to get Michael back for this.

“Thank you I will,” Michael said smugly. He was going to love this one, her reaction the first time was classic, he wouldn’t mind reliving it once again. “Ahem,” He started. “Liz asked where the bathrooms were. So I simply pulled out a roll of toilet paper and threw it at her. Once she caught it and looked at me like I had three heads, I told her to pick a tree.” Liz was fuming at this point. Maria on the other hand was trying as hard as she could to not burst out laughing.

“Liz, don’t be a cry baby, just find a tree and squat.” Maria tried to say as casually as possible, but Liz simply squinted her eyes and stomped off into the woods. As soon as Liz walked away Maria and Michael doubled over in laughter.

“Assholes!” Liz said as she found a place to do her business, she wasn’t happy but she really had to go. She closed her eyes and wished that she had taken her rental car with her, so she could get as far away from nature as possible.

****

“So how was your flight?” Isabel asked, turning in her seat to face her brother. His plane had landed a couple of hours ago, but she was so busy trying to get everything packed that she didn’t have time to talk to him about much of anything.

“It was good, I guess.” Max knew that his sister was acting weird. So was his brother-in-law, for that matter. Every time Max looked in the mirror at Alex, he saw a smirk cross Alex’s face before he turned back to the road.

“What’s going on?”

“Going on? Max, what are you talking about? There is absolutely nothing going on.” Isabel smiled brightly at her brother. She knew trying to keep a secret while he was face-to-face with her was going to be a challenge, but she needed to keep it up for just a few more minutes until they reached their destination.

“Max just relax. You must be tired, hungry?” Alex tried to turn Max’s attention away from Isabel. He knew Max and in knowing him, he knew that he could crack Isabel within minutes.

“I’m fine, I’m relaxed, but I know you guys are keeping something from me.”

“So Max, how’s the game going?” Isabel had to bite back her laugh. She was glad to have Alex with her as a distraction, but she knew that Max would hold out for only so long.

“It’s going good. I’m just getting tired of traveling so much. Sometimes I wish I could just let it go and have a real life.” Max said somewhat sadly. He was thinking back to his conversation with Michael the night before. He often wondered what his life would have been like had he not let Liz go. There were so many what if’s in his life, but he loved his job and that would have to be enough, he thought.

Isabel’s ears perked up at that revelation. Sure, Max had often said that, but there was something in the way he said it. It was as if he were longing for something he never knew he wanted. Isabel knew for certain that things would work out, one way or another…at least she hoped.

“We’re here!” Alex shouted out as he pulled the car to a stop. Isabel quickly jumped out, Max jumping out shortly behind her. “Damn Iz, how much shit did you pack? I mean we are camping not vacationing in the Bahamas.” Max ribbed his sister for her need to always pack more than necessary. Something about never knowing when an emergency would arise.

“Shut up Max! Or I’ll make you carry all my stuff!”

“Please do so because then I won’t have to carry it alone.” Alex said, coming to stand next to them at the back of the car.

“Alex Charles Whitman, do you want to sleep alone tonight?” Isabel placed her hands on her hips and raised her eyebrows. Both Alex and Max knew she meant business and would have no problem with leaving him out of the tent to fend for himself.

“No dear, I would be more than happy to carry all your shit… I mean, stuff to the campsite.” Alex said, grabbing one of Isabel’s bags. He slung it over his shoulder while grabbing another heavy ass bag in his hands and walking into the designated wooded area a few feet away where Maria and Michael were sitting by the fire.

“Ah, the joys of being married.” Max quipped lightly as he pulled out his bag and tent and made his way over to everyone with Isabel trailing behind him.

“I officially hate the wilderness!” Liz said as she made her way to the clearing where Maria and Michael were, but when she got closer she realized they were not alone. Isabel and Alex were there.

“So, you guys finally…No fucking way…” Liz stopped dead in her tracks because once Isabel stepped off to the side she noticed someone behind her pitching a tent. She had to be wrong, she knew it. There was no way it was him.

Max had already placed his things on the ground and was getting his tent ready to set up. Then he heard an all too familiar voice, one he hadn’t heard in quite some time. That didn’t matter though, he would have recognized it anywhere. He turned around slowly and locked eyes with
the last person he expected to see on this trip home.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!”

****

“What is she doing here?!” Max hissed at his sister. If he knew her, and he did, he knew she had something to do with this little gathering.

“She is here to have a good time just like you.” Isabel tried to act as if it was no big deal, but knowing her brother she knew he wasn’t just going to let this go.

“A good time? Liz, in the woods? That’s a fucking joke! Liz doesn’t like the outdoors, she’d rather sell her soul to the devil before she sleeps outside with miscellaneous creatures, as she calls them.” Max said, not knowing that he was quoting Liz’s exact words from a few moments ago.

“You’re getting all worked up for nothing, Max.” Isabel brushed off his last statement, even though she knew it was the truth. Liz was probably giving Maria and Michael a hard time.

“Worked up? Isabel you do realize how big of a mistake this is, right?” Max pulled her to the side with his back facing Liz.

“Gentle please,” Isabel knew that her brother was upset, but he wasn’t looking at the big picture. She would just have to make him see what was right in front of his face.

“Max, I’m doing you a favor here. You’ll thank me later.”

“Thank you? Isabel have you been sniffing Maria’s cypress oil again? Seriously, I think you have been to one too many sales at the mall.” Max was trying to get his emotions in check. Even though it wasn’t a good thing that Liz was there, it wasn’t terrible either, he missed seeing her all this time.

“No, I stopped sniffing that stuff when I accidentally got some up my nose, that stung like hell.”

“Isabel, could you focus here for a minute? Liz is over there. Liz, the girl I broke up with, the girl who hates my fucking guts.” Max bit out through clenched teeth. He loved his sister but right now he wanted to throw her up a tree and leave her to the wolves.

“It’ll be fine, don’t worry. Everything will work out.” Isabel said stepping away from her brother, only to be pulled back by his side.

“Fine? Isabel I love you, I really do but you realize that I haven’t spoken to or seen her since I broke up with her? This is really bad, you get that, right?” Max’s patience was wearing thin. He could see Liz arguing with Maria, and obviously she was just as upset as he knew she would be with him being there.

“Max would you stop groaning, it’s not becoming. Now, get yourself together and let’s be polite and say hello.” Isabel said wrapping her arm around her brother’s shoulder and guiding him towards Maria and Liz.

****

“Maria, what the fuck is going on? What is he doing here?!” Liz was furious. Wasn’t it bad enough that she was stuck sleeping outside in the jungle with wild beasts? Obviously not to her best friend, Liz was seriously reconsidering that title for Maria. Traitor, that seemed more appropriate at the moment.

“I have no idea. Maybe he was in town or whatever and Isabel invited him. I mean, he is her brother after all.” Maria couldn’t look Liz in the eye. She knew the excuse was inadequate but she didn’t really think about the excuse because somewhere in the back of her mind she thought the reunion would go very smoothly. Maybe a little music in the background and Liz running slowly into Max’s arms and then…

“Maria! Would you get your mind out of La-La land and focus on me here?! Why is he here? I know you know why! Stop lying to me!” Liz tried to keep her voice down and act like she could care less that Max Evans, the man that broke her heart, was not standing ten feet away from her.

“Liz, I’m sorry I just…”

“Wait. You’re sorry? You planned this? Maria, how could you? You are supposed to be my best friend.” Liz said, unable to hide the hurt in her voice. She knew that Maria might have meant well but that didn’t make it okay.

“Liz,” Maria sighed tiredly, she really meant well but this was just not going like she planned. She could only hope that Isabel was doing better than she was. “I love you, and you are my best friend, but you and Max belong together. I know you don’t see it and I know you are hurt and angry about what happened but…you’ll see.”

“I’ll see? I’ll see Maria! Do you hear yourself? I won’t see shit! You want to know why? Because I fucking hate him, I hate what he did to us… to me. And I will never forgive him for that Maria… never.” Liz said making her way over to where Michael was getting some hot dogs ready to grill.

“Hey Liz, what’s going on?” Michael knew what was going on, but he was a male and he knew at this particular moment it was best to act as stupid as possible.

“Nothing, did you notice your best friend? In case you didn’t, he’s right over there!” Liz raised her voice causing Max to turn his head in her direction. Oh, this was not going to be pretty. He wished that he could get the fuck out of there, and was seriously debating on whether or not to just take Alex’s car and head for the hills.

“Liz, I know you’re pissed off, but just try.” Liz turned to him and looked as if she was ready to pounce on his ass for knowing this was all a set up and not saying anything.

“Try? You want me to try? Try what? Try acting like I give a shit that he’s here? That what he did doesn’t affect me? That I fucking enjoy sitting my ass outside on a hard ass log just for the hell of it? Or that I really and truly love taking a piss on a tree? Which one Michael?”

“O-okay. I guess I’m going to shut up and set up the tents, do you think you can hold these for me?” Michael asked, not waiting for a response. He handed her the hot dogs and watched as she held them in the fire.

“I should drop his in here so he could starve.” Liz mumbled to herself after a few minutes. Without realizing it though, Max had come to stand behind her.

“I wouldn’t blame you.” Liz was so startled she almost dropped all of the hot dogs into the fire.

“Max!”

“Hi Liz.” Max said, somewhat nervously, but took a seat beside her just the same.

“Hi.” Liz couldn’t look at him, if she did surely she would fall all over again, and that was not happening. He was an asshole; she had to keep remembering to remind herself of that.

“So how have you been?” Max wasn’t sure why he was even talking to her; he didn’t want her to think that he still thought of her. Or about how beautiful she still looked, if not more. And how he wanted to run his fingers through her hair and breathe it’s soft scent, or how he wanted to hold her until she fell asleep. She wouldn’t welcome the thoughts, so he would keep himself in check until he was alone and could think a little more clearly.

“I’ve been great! Just keeping myself busy. You?” Liz said looking at him from the corner of her eye. She didn’t want to see him up close. She didn’t want to smell his scent and she most definitely didn’t want to miss him. But she did, a hell of a lot, but she was more hurt than anything, so this would not turn out good and she knew it.

“That’s really good Liz. And I’m doing really good.” How many times am I going to use the word good? He thought, rolling his eyes at himself.

“Right.” They sat in a very uncomfortable silence before Michael and Alex came to relieve the tension.

“So after dinner you guys want to help put up the tents?”

“No.” Max said quickly. He suddenly realized while sitting with Liz in total awkward silence that he really needed to get out of there, Liz didn’t even want to look at him. He knew that she hated him and would never forgive him. It was a nice idea that she would forgive him one day and maybe they could at least be friends, but he knew that was not realistic. He knew, without a doubt, that he and Liz could never go back to the way they were, which meant they could never be friends again.

“That’s a hell no.” Liz said looking at Michael and Alex like she wanted to turn them over and poke them with a stick and roast their asses over the fire.

“Alright, no need to get your panties in a twist, we’ll do it alone. We’ll just let you two get reacquainted with each other.”

“We are not getting reacquainted Alex, we are…we…fuck if I know what we are doing, but if it wasn’t for all of you trying to meddle in our lives, we would be just great!” Liz said handing Max the hot dogs and stomping off to a secluded corner of the campsite.

“Boy, she’s pissed huh?” Alex said taking a seat next to Max, while Michael took a seat on the opposite side of the fire.

“Pissed? You think? Damn I didn’t even notice.” Max said sarcastically.

“Really? Maxwell how did you not notice? I mean her nostrils were flaring and her cheeks were all blushed and her eyes were doing that weird squinting thing she does when she’s fuming mad.” Michael said, completely oblivious to the fact that Max was not being serious.

“Asshole! Wake the fuck up! I need to get out of here.”

“No way, you are staying! Isabel and Maria worked too hard on this and there is no way I’m getting in that tent with your sister pissed off. I’d rather be skinned alive and left to the miscellaneous creatures out here.”

“Stop being dramatic Alex, grow a pair.”

“Oh, right Mikey, like Maria isn’t going to whip your ass if you don’t make this shit between Max and Liz work? She’ll just blame you and then Isabel will blame me and then we’ll have to sleep in the guest rooms. I don’t like the guest rooms Michael, they’re scary places.”

“Step away from the dark side Alex, it’ll be okay. I know Max won’t let us hang out to dry on this one. Right, Maxwell?” Michael looked at Max hopefully. However, the only response either Michael or Alex received was a grunt from Max.

“Come on, just be nice to her. I know she’s upset with you but…”

“Upset? Why does everyone think that Liz only gets upset? You guys know her and she isn’t upset with me. She probably wishes we were at a Luau right now.” Max sighed, taking a look around to capture Liz’s gaze, which surprisingly was fixed on him.

Michael and Alex looked at one another in confusion then back at Max.

“A Luau?”

“Yes, you know where they poke a stick through a pig and roast it over an open flame?”

“Oh yeah…”

“Yes, and what does that have to do with you and Liz?” Alex asked, still not following the conversation.

“Because she’s probably wishing I was that pig.” Max sighed, dropping his gaze to the ground in front of him. It was going to be a long night.

****

“Oh hell no! This is just wrong!” Liz yelled, crossing her arms over her chest. She was about ready to break in half. After they finished dinner, she and Max watched as everyone else put up the tents. Max and her might have their disagreements but when it came time for them to help with the tents, they refused with a vengeance. They didn’t want to be there together; therefore they were not going to help the effort.

“Oh yes! See Liz, you didn’t want to help so we set them up so that you and Max could be right next to each other. That’s your punishment.” Maria said while being pulled into her tent by Michael.

“Night!” She yelled as Michael zipped up the tent.

“Isabel, what the fuck are you doing?” Max was livid. Why were they trying to make his life miserable?

“Oh dear brother, just like Maria said, you don’t want to help then you have no say in where you sleep. Deal with it. See you in the morning.”

“Sweet dreams!” Alex called out from inside he and Isabel’s tent.

“Bastards!” Liz said, storming past Max to her tent, which was neatly set up right next to his. Max just laughed to himself. She was still just as spunky as ever, as he made his way over to his tent for bed.

It had definitely turned out to be an exciting evening to say the least; he just hoped that the morning would be better.

Chapter 5

Liz sighed, flopping onto her back. She was freezing, and she’d been trying for the past two hours to find a comfortable sleeping position, and so far, had yet to accomplish that. To top all that off, she had to pee. She’d been holding it for at least an hour, hoping that the sun would come up, but it still hadn’t.

Finally, she reached over, rummaging through her bag and found her cell phone. She didn’t get very good reception, so she couldn’t call anyone, but at least she could find out what time it was. She pushed the ‘end call’ button, so that the screen lit up, letting her know it was only 3:21 AM.

“Well, shit.” She mumbled to herself. There was no way she could hold it anymore. She searched through her bag for the flashlight she saw Maria put in it earlier. Once she found it, she crawled over to the tent opening and started unzipping it.

It didn’t unzip very far before the zipper got caught on the tent material and refused to budge. “What the hell?” Liz kept tugging on it, causing the tent to jerk every time she tugged on it. She finally got on her feet, so she was squatting. She grabbed the zipper with both hands, giving it a hard tug, putting all her weight into it for leverage. The zipper quickly gave and Liz went flying back on her ass. “Oww ” She screamed, huffing before she grabbed the flashlight and crawled out of the tent.

Once she was safely outside and on her feet, she turned around and kicked the tent a few times, just to show it who was boss. She flipped on her flashlight, grabbing some T.P. and heading off into the woods.

She tried not to freak out over every little noise, telling herself that it was just her imagination. She threw the beam of the flashlight in every direction, convinced that Leatherface, or Jason, or Freddy was gonna come after her at any moment.

As soon as that thought crossed her mind, she ran as fast as she could into the woods, and quickly picked a tree. She peed as quickly as she could before hurrying back in the direction of the campsite.

She walked for a good two minutes, surprised that she’d gone that far into the woods just to go to the bathroom. She sighed, muttering to herself about how this was one of the main reasons she despised camping.

She looked down at the ground as she walked, glancing up every now and then to prevent walking into a tree. She stepped between two trees, and walked right into a spiders web.

She, of course, started screaming, wildly wiping away at the sticky web she’d gotten all over her. Once she was certain it was all off, she walked a little more quickly back towards the camp site.

She stopped dead in her tracks when she heard a twig snap behind her. She didn’t breath, or dare turn around. She stood perfectly still, listening to see if she could hear anything. She chanced a glance behind her, finding nothing but woods. She pointed her flashlight all around her, seeing nothing.

“Grow up, Parker. There’s nothing out there.” She scolded herself, resuming the walk back. She took about five steps before she heard something again. She stopped, once again, listening intently for any kind of noise.

All of a sudden, she felt something touch her shoulder. She started screaming as loud as she possibly could, before turning around, fists clenched, swinging wildly.

She closed her eyes as her fists connected repeatedly with her attacker. She turned to run away when she heard him talk.

“Damn it, Liz ”She stopped, whirling around, seeing Max bent over, his hand over his eye. “What the hell are you doing?”

Liz stalked back over to him. “What the hell am I doing? I was going pee What the hell are you doing? Why did you follow me out into the woods? I thought you were a serial killer ”

“I heard you leaving your tent, and I came to make sure you were ok, and that you didn’t get lost Which, it’s a damn good thing I did because you’re going in the wrong fucking direction ” Max up righted himself, touching his eye gingerly. “I think you gave me a black eye.”

“Serves you right ” She crossed her arms over her chest. She was quiet for a moment. “And what the hell do you mean, I’m going the wrong direction?”

“Our campsite is that way.” Max said, pointing to the left. Liz glanced over to the left, before completely ignoring him and starting to walk that way. “You’re welcome.”

“Don’t expect to hear a thank you outta me I didn’t ask you to follow me into the woods, did I? ” She yelled, never turning around to look at him. “If it hadn’t been for you, I’d be going the right direction anyway ”

“Oh, so its my fault?” Max asked, slightly amused. “How the hell do you figure that?”

“I heard you making all kinds of noises and it scared me, so I went the wrong direction. See? All your fault. Way to go, a-hole ”

Max chose not to reply, just followed after her. He watched her hips sway from side to side as she took long strides in the direction he’d pointed her in. He pulled his lower lip in between his teeth, biting down to try to control the groan as he remembered what it was to have those legs wrapped around him.

Max was so busy with his day dream, he didn’t notice that Liz has stopped and turned to look at him until he barreled into her, knocking her over.

He grabbed her just before she hit the ground. “What the hell is your problem?” Liz asked, pushing him away from her and standing up. “First of all, what the hell were you moaning about?”

Max blushed, not realizing that he’d not only moaned out loud, but apparently loud enough for her to hear it. “I didn’t moan, you’re crazy.” Max decided that just denying the whole thing was the best course of action.

Liz scoffed at him before turning around and continuing her trek back to the campsite. “Whatever you say, Super Star.”

After about three minutes of walking, they finally made it back to camp. Max watched as Liz went directly into her tent, zipping it up tightly. He sighed, pushing his hands though his hair and making his way over to his tent.

He got in and got back in his sleeping bag. He reached up, touching his eye and wincing. He knew it was already starting to swell up, and he knew it was going to be all black and blue tomorrow, but right now, all he wanted to do was go to sleep and forget all this drama was going on.

*********

Liz pulled her sleeping bag back from her face, groaning as she tried to sit up. She’d slept horribly the night before, and she had muscles sore that she didn’t even know she had.

She could hear Maria and Michael arguing and Isabel and Alex trying to run an interference, so she figured everyone else was already awake. She grabbed a hair tie out of her bag, quickly throwing her hair back in a ponytail.

She crawled over to the opening of the tent, happy when the zipper didn’t get stuck again.

“Morning.” Isabel said, sounding way to cheerful for Liz’s liking.

“Yeah, whatever.” Liz grumbled, making her way over to the fire and plopping down on a log next to Alex. She slipped her arm though his, resting her head on his shoulder. “Can we go home yet?”

“We’re leaving later today. Don’t worry, you won’t have to sleep outside again.” Alex confirms, laughing as Liz throws her head back, and starts yelling.

“THERE IS A GOD ” Liz yelled, throwing her arms up in victory. “No more having to pee in the woods, and then getting lost on the way back ”

“Wait, you got lost in the woods?” Maria asked, giving up on helping Michael with breakfast.

“Yeah, at like three something this morning. I went to go pee, and I kept hearing things and I got lost.” Liz admited. “I thought I was just being paranoid, hearing things in the woods because I was scared, but I wasn’t just being ridiculous. Max followed me into the woods and was all creeping around.”

“What?” Michael also gives up on breakfast, suddenly interested in the story.

Liz looked at Michael, Maria, Isabel and Alex, noticing that she had everyone’s undivided attention. “Well, I was walking back, and I heard something. So I stopped, and looked around, didn’t see anything, so I kept going. A few seconds later, I heard something again, and so I stopped, then I felt something touch my shoulder and I started screaming and turned around swinging and I kinda... uhm, punched Max in a face.”

“You punched him in the face? ” Michael balked, but still burst out laughing like everyone else.

“Well, was he ok?” Alex managed in between fits of laughter.

“I don’t know. I didn’t ask him. I was pissed, so I came back here and went into my tent right away, haven’t seen him since.” Liz said, grabbing a soda, popping the top and taking a big drink. She hoped a little caffeine would wake her up and get rid of the groggy feeling she had. “He’s a big boy, I’m sure he’s fine.” Liz flippantly said, raising her soda can to take another drink. Just as the soda poured into her mouth, she glanced over, seeing Max coming out of his tent... sporting a huge shiner. She immediately spit her soda out, bringing her hand up to her mouth, sputtering.

Everyone looked at Liz in concern, but followed her line of sight. Everyone’s mouth dropped wide open when they caught sight of Max. He had major bed-head, his hair sticking up in every direction, and his left eye was almost completely purple, and quite swollen. It looked like he’d gotten jumped.

Max walked over to the fire pit, dropping down on the log across from Liz and Alex, glaring at Liz. Liz’s eyes got really wide. “Ohmigod, I did that?” She asked, finding it unbelievable. She’d never hit anyone before, let alone given someone a black eye.

“Ya think? ” Max asked, tilting his head to the side and regarding Liz with a squint.

“I didn’t mean to ” Liz tried to defend herself.

“Yeah, I believe that.” Max bit out, combing his fingers through his hair.

Alex discreetly stood up, stepping away from Liz and walking over to where Isabel, Maria and Michael were watching the battle from a distance.

“I’m sor-” Liz started to apologize.

“Save the shit, Liz. You know you were just itching for a chance to do it.” Max shot back, standing up and walking back over to his tent and going back inside, zipping it closed behind him.

Liz watched him go, her eyebrows drawn together in confusion, her mouth wide open. She was in total shock that Max thought that she’d wanted to do that. The thought had crossed her mind from time to time, just because she was upset about him taking away her choice in their relationship, but she would have never actually done it just to be malicious.

Maria made her way over to Liz, sitting down next to her where Alex had been sitting a few moments before. Liz was looking down at the soda in her hands, nibbling on the inside of her lip.

“Does that taste good?” Maria tried to joke, but as she anticipated, no one even broke a smile. Maria put her arm around Liz, silently giving Liz support.

Liz sighed, looking over at Maria. “Should we go ahead and start putting the tents up?” She asked, not wanting to have to talk about what had just happened.

Maria knew Liz didn’t want people making a big deal about the confrontation, so she just nodded. “Yeah, we can go ahead and start packing up while Michael makes breakfast.” Maria gave her a small smile before getting up and offering Liz her hand to help her up as well.

Liz, Isabel, Maria and Alex went to work on the tents while Michael cooked, and Max sulked in his tent until he was kicked out of it so it could be put away as well.

*********

After all the tents were broken down, and all the sleeping bags rolled up, everything was piled together near the fire to be taken down to the cars. Everyone sat around the fire eating breakfast, no one daring to start a conversation, knowing some how, it would end in another fight.

Maria finished her food, getting up to throw her paper plate away in the garbage pin provided at the campsite. “Good breakfast, sweetie.” Maria said, giving Michael a kiss on the cheek. He grunted in reply, continuing to shovel food in his mouth. “Don’t hold your fork like that.” Maria scolded, grabbing Michael’s fork and showing him the right way to use it. “You’re not a cave man, don’t act like one.” Michael started to reply but Maria just cut him off. “Isabel, you’re done. Wanna help me start carrying the stuff down to the cars?”

Isabel glanced up at Maria, noticing Maria had the ‘we need to talk’ look on her face. “Sure.” Isabel replied, getting up and tossing her plate in the garbage.

The girls each grabbed an armful of stuff, making their way down to the cars. Once they were sure they were out of earshot, they started in on the discussion. “So, what do you think?” Maria asked, glancing behind her to see Michael and Alex grabbing some stuff to bring down to the cars. Liz and Max were both still sitting by the fire, acting as if the other wasn’t there.

“I’m not sure.” Isabel admitted. “It seemed like a really good idea, but I had no idea it was gonna be this bad.”

“Hey, we anticipated they wouldn’t welcome the reunion at first. Don’t you dare wimp out on me now, Whitman.” Maria popped the truck on the car, tossing in the stuff. “It’s gonna take them both a little while to realize this is a good thing, maybe a little longer than we thought, but this was a good idea. They’ll be thanking us later.”

“This wasn’t a good idea.” Michael announced, coming around the side of the car with Alex trailing behind him. “Did you see them? They’re about to kill each other ”

“No, they weren’t.” Maria argued.

“Are you sure about that? I’m pretty sure I saw Max with a big black eye.” Michael pointed out, arranging all the stuff in the trunk so it would all fit.

“If we wanted your opinion, we’d ask for it. Somehow, I don’t remember asking for it, so shut up.” Maria threw back. “Don’t you have something you can be doing, other than putting in your two cents where it’s unwanted? Go piss on a tree, claim your territory, or whatever it is that you do.”

“You’re getting on my last nerve, woman.” Michael gritted out, poking his index finger in her face for emphasis before turning around and stalking back towards the campsite.

Maria just rolled her eyes at his retreating form. “He’s such a moron. Anyway,” She turned her attention back to Isabel. “We gotta hold strong in our plan. We can’t be pansies about this. We started this, we’re seeing it through to the end. Ok?” Maria asked, holding out her fist to Isabel.

Isabel reluctantly tapped her own fist against Maria’s. The girls started doing it way back in high school, no one could really remember why, but for some reason, the tradition was still alive. “Let’s get back up there.” Isabel said, walking back towards camp with Maria. Alex and Michael passed them, carrying the last of the stuff.

Once the girls got back to the campsite, Liz stood up. “Time to go?” She asked, thankful to get back to the world of electricity and running water.

“Not quite yet.” Isabel hedged, not wanting to be the one to tell Liz what they were going to be doing when the guys got back from the car.

Liz narrowed her eyes at them. “What do you mean, not quite yet? We came, we camped, we packed up. Let’s make like a tree and get the fuck outta here.”

Alex and Michael strolled up right after Liz finished her sentence. “Ok.” Alex clapped his hands, rubbing them together. “Let’s go hiking.”

Liz’s eyes got huge, darting to look at everyone. Maria and Isabel had innocent smiles on their faces, Alex looked excited, Michael looked confused, and Max looked pissed. “WHAT? ” She squealed. “Hiking? You’ve gotta be fuckin kidding me ”

*********

“Are we done hiking yet?” Liz whined.

“We haven’t even been walking for two minutes.” Maria pointed out. “Will you just go with it? Enjoy nature.”

“I hate nature. I hate the trees, I hate the animals, I hate the bugs, I hate the mud, I hate the stupid fresh air, I want to get out of here ” Liz yelled.

“For the love of...” Michael trailed off, tugging at his hair in frustration. “If you don’t stop, I swear, I’m gonna leave you out here for the bears to eat you, Liz.”

Max snorted a laugh, unable to hold it in. Liz hit him in the upper arm, causing him to look over at her. “Will you stop hitting me? ” Max yelled, tripping over an exposed tree root since he wasn’t watching where he was going. Liz burst out laughing at Max’s expense, having to stop walking because she was laughing too hard. Max stopped, gawking at her. “You find that amusing?” He asked, getting more upset by the second.

“Yeah, I think that’s one of the funniest things I’ve seen since I’ve been back in Roswell. And that includes seeing Michael fall off the treadmill.”

Michael turned bright red. “Why am I being brought into this?”

“You fell off the treadmill?” Maria asked, barely holding back a smile.

“That’s neither here nor there.” Michael brushed it off. “Let’s keep going.”

Liz groaned, but kept walking, her and Max bringing up the rear of the group.

After about half an hour of walking, Liz threw her hands up in the air. “I quit. I’m not walking anymore.” She walked over to a large rock off the side of the trail and sat down, intent on not moving.

“Alright, good luck finding your way back to the camp.” Michael said, never once even looking behind him. “We’re leaving you there, so have a nice day.”

Liz’s mouth dropped open, shocked that they were seriously going to leave her there. “Fine, I didn’t wanna hang out with you anyway ” Liz threw back, knowing it was lame, but not really caring.

Max stopped, turning around to look at Liz. “C’mon, you can’t just stay there. You’re gonna end up getting lost on the way back. Get up, I’m sure we’re not going that much farter.”

“There’s no we in this situation, because I’m not going anywhere at all. I’m going to sit right here.” Liz crossed her arms over her chest, as if that proved that she wasn’t gonna move.

“They’re seriously going to leave you behind, you know?” Max informed her.

“They’re gonna leave your ass behind too, if you don’t go catch up ” She yelled at him.

“I’m not leaving you here in the woods by yourself.” Max tried to reason with her.

“Oh, but you have no trouble leaving me any other time.” Liz bitterly replied, looking away from Max.

Max sighed, more hurt by that comment then he’d ever admit to. He drug his hand down his face. “Then get up, we’ll walk back to the campsite and wait for them there.”

“No. No, Max, we won’t. Don’t do me any favors, just go away.” Liz knew she was being extremely stubborn, but she refused to let Max help her. To her, that would be admitting that she needed him, and it was her goal to make sure he knew that she didn’t need him.

“I repeat, I’m not leaving you here in the woods by yourself.” Max said, walking over and standing directly in front of her.

“Well, I’m not moving.” She said, sticking her nose up in the air, and looking away from Max.

Max clicked his tongue, nodding. “Alright, you don’t wanna move. That’s fine.”

Before Liz knew what was happening, Max grabbed one of her arms, yanking her up off the rock. He bent over, wrapping an arm around her waist, and hoisting her over his shoulder before turning back the way they had come in the first place.

“Max Evans, put me down ” Liz screamed, beating her fists into his back. “Let go of me ”

“You said you weren’t moving, and I couldn’t leave you there, so this is how it’s gonna have to be. You feel free to let me know if you find an alternative to this.” Max said, holding onto her tightly as she tried to squirm out of his grasp.

Despite her best efforts, he carried her all the way back to the campsite, walking over and setting her on the trunk of Michael’s car.

The minute he set her down, she popped off the hood, standing on top of him, all up in his face. “Who the hell do you think you are? ” Liz yelled, beating her fists into his chest. Liz looked up, meeting his gaze, literally stumbling back a step.

Max advanced on her, like a tiger stalking his pray. “You better watch it and start playing nice, baby.” Max growled. Her back came into contact with the side of the car, but Max didn’t stop until he was pressed up against her. “I wouldn’t wanna have to spank you for being naughty.”

Liz was sure her jaw was on the ground at his last statement. However, she couldn’t say that she wasn’t intrigued, or affected by him. “You don’t scare me.” Liz whispered, leaning into him as well. If he wanted to play, oh, she’d play right back.

“You sure?” Max asked, his hands coming to rest on her hips, before slowly moving upwards. He had no idea what the hell he was thinking, but he didn’t really care. He was lost in the sensation of touching Liz again, and having her touch him.

Liz knew she needed to get away from Max. Being in such close proximity, being able to touch him, and smell him again was making her common sense go flying out the window. Even with all that, she couldn’t make herself move away. Liz watched as Max’s head dipped slightly, then slowly, his lips moved towards hers.

Just as their lips were about to touch, the sound of Maria screeching Michael’s name penetrated their sexual fog, and Max jumped back at least six feet, as Liz quickly moved around to the complete other side of the car.

A few moments later, Michael, Maria, Isabel and Alex came stumbling out the woods. Michael and Maria were arguing about something, like usual, and Alex and Isabel were laughing their asses off.

Max and Liz avoided even looking in the others general direction as everyone else made their way back to the cars, and they all piled in, ready to finally head back home.

A/N - I finally made it with the update...of course Sarah wanted me to post it sooner but my computers were being retarded. Anyway we just wanted to say HELLO to everyone we met in Philly and we had a great time! And once again thank you all for the incredible feedback:wink:

Chapter 6

“Liz are you ever going to get out of your pajamas?” Maria asked walking into to Liz’s bedroom, it was well into the afternoon and her friend had not made any attempt to get up.

“No! I had to deal with all that camping bullshit, which means I deserve a little R, R, & S.” Liz’s voice sounded muffled from underneath the fluffy white comforter. If Liz had her way she would never get out of bed. Dealing with Max took more out of her then she wanted to let on. Why did he still affect her? She sighed in exasperation of her utter and complete helplessness.

“First of all, you wanna remove the damn blanket from over your mouth? Secondly, what the fuck does R, R & S mean?”

Liz threw back the covers and sat up to face her best friend, and then let her shoulders drop in defeat. It was pointless; Maria would just ask her one question after another until she got up anyway. “It means, rest, relaxation and sleep! You know the three things I didn’t do while camping with the miscellaneous creatures in the jungle!” Liz planted both feet on the floor and made her way over to the bathroom.

“You are being dramatic Liz, we weren’t in the jungle. It was the forest, but there were miscellaneous creatures that much I will agree with.” Maria said as she made up Liz’s bed. Today was going to be a good day for Max and Liz, she thought.

Liz entered the bedroom only to roll her eyes, seeing the bed was already made. It was still warm and it was still calling her. She closed her eyes and kissed sleep goodbye, at least until tonight.

“Alright, mother what did I have to get out of bed for?” Liz was rummaging through the closet trying to find something to wear. She preferred to walk around in her tank top and boy shorts but didn’t think Michael would appreciate it.

“Today is a new day, filled with endless possibilities. And you my dear have to help me pick out curtains.”

“You know Maria, you seem very upbeat today and that’s good and everything, but cut the Mary Poppins shit out. I’m tired and I haven’t had my morning coffee.” Liz knew she was grumpy, but what did Maria expect? She had spent most of her evening thinking about Max and that just stressed her out to the point where every time she closed her eyes, she saw him. And just as she was falling asleep, Maria walked in to get her out of bed. Who wouldn’t be grumpy, she thought.

“Morning coffee? Liz it’s almost four in the afternoon, breakfast, as you know it is long over. But, I still made you some coffee. It’s in the kitchen, now hurry up we have a lot to do and not a lot of time to get it done.” Maria said quickly rushing out of the room; she didn’t want Liz asking any questions.

“What is that…Maria! This conversation is not over just because you chickened out and left the room!” Liz yelled out after Maria and decided that she really did miss her more than she thought. It was good to be around her friends again, minus Max of course. But hopefully soon, he would be leaving and all would go back to normal.

****

“I think this color would be great, Maria.” Liz was getting tired. It was almost an hour later and she couldn’t even get Maria to agree on a color pattern. She had first tried to get Maria to choose a design, but Maria had said there were just too many choices. So Liz decided it would be better to maybe start with a color that way Maria could envision what it would look like. But that wasn’t working either.

“I don’t think Michael will like it, and he’s just so difficult Liz. You know that.” Liz looked at Maria giving her the, “and you’re not difficult” look. “Don’t look at me like that. You know we have been arguing about this for weeks and it’s driving me crazy.” Liz understood Maria’s dilemma, but if they didn’t pick out something soon she would make every room white and not care one single bit.

“Maria, what you need to do is make a decision. I can’t be here for a year helping you. You are my best friend and I love you, but if you don’t decide I will be forced quit. And I am not a quitter Maria.” Liz stated firmly making her way into the kitchen for a cold drink.

“Oh, you’re not a quitter?” Maria questioned following behind her into the kitchen.

“No. I don’t quit. I follow through with everything.”

“Everything?” Maria, raised her eyebrow in question.

“Everything. And what the fuck is up with repeating every last word I say? Did you visit the pet store too many times this week? I told you to stay away from the parakeets, do you not listen to anything I say?” Liz sighed dramatically while rolling her eyes.

“Ha, ha. Aren’t you the comedian? So let me ask you something Liz?” Maria settled at the cluttered kitchen table waiting for Liz to join her. Liz crossed the room and took a seat next to her friend.

“Go ahead.”

“If you’re not a quitter, then what do you call what you did with Max?” Maria knew she was hitting a sore spot, but she knew that her friend needed to face the reality of her feelings.

“Excuse me? What I did with Max? Don’t you think you have it wrong? He left me. He broke up with me. I didn’t tell him to do it, I…” Liz didn’t and wouldn’t break down. Why was Maria pushing the issue so much? Why couldn’t she leave the past dead and buried?

“I know you didn’t. But he’s here now Liz and you won’t give him a chance.”

“You know Maria, you’re right. Let me think about this for a minute.” Liz sat back and crossed her arms over her chest, and pretended to ponder the situation.

“Oh I got it! That’s because he doesn’t fucking deserve it! He got his fame, his fortune and I’m sure he has an entire harem of girls waiting to take him to bed. So I’m sorry if I don’t see how I fit into his life, if I were to give him a chance. But let’s not forget the major issue here.”

“Which is?” Maria was lost. She knew that Liz was hurt, but she was allowing the hurt to cloud her real feelings. Maria knew without a doubt that Max and Liz belonged together. They were just too stubborn to realize it.

“Which is. We are too different. I don’t even know him Maria. It’s like he’s this acquaintance. How is that possible? We used to share everything…everything. And now, I don’t even know what television shows he watches or if he still snores lightly in his sleep, or if he still whispers out my name while he’s dreaming or…” Liz trailed off when she realized she had said too much.

“I knew it!” Maria said triumphantly.

“Knew what?!” Michael swings open the back door with Max trailing behind him.

Liz straightened up and tried to look disinterested, but her heart ached. She was so angry with herself. She should not have let Maria know those things. They were the types of things that had run through her head that previous evening. And now, he was there.

“I knew…none of your business. I was having a private conversation with my friend Michael.” Maria realized that she couldn’t repeat what Liz just said. So she covered it up as best as possible.

“Hi Max! So did you guys enjoy your game?” Maria asked giving Michael a kiss on his cheek and sending him upstairs to shower.

“Hey Maria. Liz. Yeah we had a good time. But Michael thinks I should stick to my day job.” Max managed a small chuckle, but he couldn’t tear his eyes away from Liz’s downcast face. Maria watched the small exchange and knew that she needed to talk to Isabel immediately. They were close to cracking, she just knew it.

“Why’s that Evans? Do you suck that bad at golf?”

“That’s putting it mildly.” Max pulled out a chair and took a seat at the table. That’s when he really took notice of all the books and material scattered across it.

“What’s all this shit?” He said while holding a piece of peach fabric in the air.

“This shit, is what I’m going through to help decorate my house.” Maria said gathering some items to make the table look a little more presentable.

“Okay. Wouldn’t be easier to hire a professional designer to handle this stuff?” Max still looked confused. He knew Maria and Michael all too well, which meant one thing. They couldn’t decide on a mattress without lots of arguing.

“You’re looking at one.” Liz bit out sarcastically. It was the first time she spoke and Max’s eyes snapped in her direction. He looked surprised to say the least. And why shouldn’t he be? He didn’t know this beauty sitting before him. He used to know everything about her. Did she have any new habits? Did she still giggle when she watched the Pillsbury commercials? And most of all, did she still cuddle up under her blankets, like she never wanted to get out of bed?

Max wished things turned out differently for them. He wished that he could have made all her dreams come true. Did she have someone back home that was missing her? Did he get to hold her and talk to her when she was scared? Max longed to be that person, and at one point in his life he was that person. But now…he didn’t want to think about it anymore. It was the past and it’s over.

“I’m hungry. I’m gonna grab something to eat and then I’m going to head back to Isabel’s.” Max rose from the chair and made his way to the fridge to make a sandwich.

Liz needed to get out of the room. It was dangerous and she honestly didn’t want to fight with Max. That was never her intention. She turned to Maria and asked her to go upstairs with her for a few minutes.

Once inside her room with the door closed, Liz turned to Maria. “When is he leaving?”

“Who? Max?”

“No. Donald Duck. Of course Max.” Liz sighed and took a seat at the edge of her bed. She wanted to crawl back under the covers and sleep until tomorrow.

“I don’t know. I guess I can ask Isabel when we see her later.”

“Later? What are you talking about?”

“I mean we are all having dinner tonight.” Maria said as upbeat as possible, but she was failing miserably. She knew Liz would be furious.

“Dinner! No we are not having dinner. You and Michael can go have dinner, but I’m going to be in this room, laying in the dark and praying for the sandman.” Liz hissed out. Why was everyone trying to hurt her? What did she do in her last life to make this life terrible?

“Yes, Liz. We are having dinner. And you will get out of the bed, take a shower and get beautiful. Why? Because Isabel went to a lot of trouble to get us reservations at Porcini’s.” Maria stood over Liz making sure she understood that no matter what she said, she was going to dinner.

“Wow! Maria that place is so great. I haven’t been there in so long. You guys are evil you know that right?”

“We know. But you love us. Just like we love you. I promise it’s going to be a great night.”

“Be ready by eight.” Maria smiled brightly and placed a kiss on the top of Liz’s head before leaving the room.

“Oh yeah it’s gonna be a great night. I can see it already.” Liz sighed and threw herself back on the bed.

****

“I know you think you are doing a great thing. And I have no doubt you have the best intentions but you can’t push them.”

“Don’t you think I know that?” Isabel turned from rummaging through her closet for the perfect dress to wear to dinner. It was a special dinner and everything had to be perfect.

“Isabel…” He said in a warning tone.

“Alex…” She simply mocked him.

“I’m serious.”

“So am I. They don’t realize how good they are together Alex. Max is my brother and I love him but he’s miserable. He can feed me all the bullshit he wants over the telephone, but his eyes don’t lie. When he looks at that girl, it’s all there. It never went anywhere. And I have to wonder if he didn’t miss our wedding because she was going to be there.”

“Isabel! You know that’s not true. Max was devastated and I know that even if Liz were there, if he could have he would have made it.” Alex turned his wife around and made sure she heard every word out of his mouth.

“I know. I do. Really. I just want everything to work out for them. They deserve to be happy.”

“I understand. Just give them time.” Alex pulled her into his arms and kissed her lips softly before allowing her to return to her perusal of her closet.

****

“What the fuck am I doing?” Max paced his bedroom floor for the past hour. He couldn’t find anything to wear and he was nervous as hell.

He was going to be having dinner with Liz. Well, not just with Liz but the point was that she was going to be there. After she told him what she did for a living, she hadn’t said another word to him and he was certain that she hated him even more.

What did he expect? That she would see him again and beg him to take her back? That was a joke. If anything he knew he should be the one. But he wouldn’t. She was happy. Wasn’t she?

This was infuriating for him. He didn’t know what to think. All he knew was that in less than an hour he would be sitting at a table with the most beautiful girl in the world and she thought he was the biggest self centered asshole on the planet.

“Yeah this is going to be a great night.” He thought as he slipped his tie around his neck.

****

They had all settled down to dinner and Max had found it difficult to focus on any of the conversations taking place at the table. The reason being was Liz. When he saw her enter the restaurant with Michael and Maria, he literally thought he would pass out.

She was wearing wine colored satin dress. Her hair fell loosely around her shoulders and the front was pinned back, allowing for a perfectly unobstructed view of her face. Max sat and stared at her for a few minutes, waiting and hoping that she might make some eye contact with him. However, she didn’t. In fact she acted as if he wasn’t there. Which pissed him off beyond belief. Did he mean so little to her now? He tried to focus on the menu in front him, knowing it would be a long night.

Liz didn’t know what to do with herself. She felt completely self-conscious. Did Max like her dress? Did he still think she was beautiful? Or did he have some gorgeous model type girlfriend back home waiting for him? He looked so good to her tonight. He was wearing a black suit and a satin black and silver tie, and it fit him perfectly. She knew she was being rude by not talking to him, but she was terrified. Terrified that if she did, she would get lost like she always did in his eyes. She was afraid that she would let her emotions take over, and she couldn’t. He would be leaving soon, and if not she would. Therefore either way, they wouldn’t be seeing each other soon enough.

“Liz would you pick out something to eat already and stop day dreaming?” Michael piped in over the silence at the table. They all knew just how long it took Liz to order a meal. Even if it were a place she had been to a dozen times, she was very picky.

“Stop rushing me. You got your drink now just relax.” Liz said as she skimmed the menu for the fifth time, still not being able to decide on what to get.

Max saw that she was having problems; she always bit her bottom lip and fidgeted with the menu when she wasn’t sure what to get. At least that hasn’t changed, he thought. A small smile played on his lips as he realized the opportunity that had presented itself to him.

He leaned in closer, since of course everyone so conveniently had them sitting next to one another, and whispered to her. “Liz, why don’t you order the Chicken Marsala, you know that’s the only thing you order when we go to Italian restaurants.” Liz was a little startled, but had to smile at the fact that Max remembered. “You’re right! I don’t know why I even bother looking at a menu. Thank you, Max.” Liz and Max were locked in a heated stare. They both had a smile across their lips and they looked as if they had forgotten they were at a table with four other people.

They would have stayed that way if three people hadn’t approached the table for autographs. She watched as Max signed something for each of the fans before sending them on their way. She was so proud of him, and she wanted to tell him as much. But she didn’t. He was probably tired of hearing it, so she decided to just focus on the conversation Maria was having with Michael.

“Well I’m stuffed! That meal was excellent.” Michael said leaning back and rubbing his full stomach.

“I agree. It was very good. Isabel, thank you for setting this all up. I had such a good time.” Liz said realizing that ever since Max suggested what she should have for dinner, that she hadn’t wiped the smile off her face.

“Ladies, I think we need to freshen up!” Isabel said excusing herself from the table and gave Maria and Liz a face that said, defy me and face my wrath. Both girls jumped from their chair to follow Isabel to the ladies room.

“Michael what the fuck is wrong with you?” Max said as soon as the girls were out of earshot.

“What? What’d I do?” Michael looked innocently at Max and then when Max gave him a disbelieving look he turned to Alex.

“Hey man, I don’t know what he’s talking about.” Alex waved his hands defensively in the air. Max looked pissed and he didn’t even want to know what was going on.

“Liz. Why didn’t you tell me she was an interior designer?” Max hissed out.

“Hey man, you said you knew she lived in Atlanta.” Michael said in his defense. Honestly he had no idea what the fuck Max was talking about.

“Yeah Max you knew she lived there.” Max turned his fiery eyes at Alex.

“My bad man. Continue with ripping into Michael.” Alex sat back and took a drink of his wine.

“Yes, I knew she lived there but I didn’t know that’s what she did for a living. You could have prepared me.” Max said and lowered his voice when he saw the girls heading back to the table.

“Sorry man.” Michael was able to get that much out before the girls returned to the table.

“All freshened up or whatever the fuck it is you girls do in the bathroom together?”

“Yes, we are. Now because you are being so great, how about a dance?” Maria said reaching out her hand for Michael to grab.

“But I don’t…”

“Michael.” Maria said sternly leaving no room for arguments.

“Yes dear.”

“Isabel, would you like to dance?” Alex stands and takes his wife by the arm and leads her to the dance floor.

That left Max and Liz seated that the table in very awkward silence. Max was contemplating asking her to dance, but wasn’t sure how she would react to it. Liz on the other hand felt left out; she would love to dance with Max but knew he probably wouldn’t ask. She knew she had been harsh but she was still hurt and it was only getting worse the longer she was around him. Mainly because she felt the urge to tell him how she felt, but she promised herself she would never put herself out there again to get hurt.

“Liz?” His soft voice startled her.

“Yes.”

“Would you like to dance?” Max knew he was setting himself up for disappointment, but maybe just maybe she would bend a little.

“No, thank you Max.” She wanted to so bad, but where would that leave them?

Shot down! But he would try once again. This time he stood up in front of her and asked, “I won’t beg you Liz, but I will ask you one last time. Will you dance with me?” He waited and prayed that she didn’t turn him down again.

Liz looked up at him; she knew she was hurting him. And even though he broke her heart, she still hated to see him upset. So she agreed.

They made their way out to the dance floor just as the song was changing. Max reached an arm out and placed it around her waist. He then reached for her hand with the other and they began to sway to the music.

Last night I had a crazy dream
A wish was granted just for me,
It could be for anything
I didn't ask for money
Or a mansion in Malibu
I simply wished, for one more day with you

Max could feel his heartbeat quicken, being that close to her again was almost too much. He wanted to tell her so much but decided that they should just have that moment together.

One more day
One more time
One more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again
I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still, for one more day with you

First thing I'd do, is pray for time to crawl
Then I'd unplug the telephone
And keep the TV off
I'd hold you every second
Say a million I Love You's
That's what I'd do. With one more day with you

Liz couldn’t look up at him. Her breathing had sped up when she felt his arm snake around her waist. She had longed for nights where she could feel him touch her, hold her and make love to her. At that moment she decided she couldn’t hold out any longer, this might be the last time, she thought.

One more day
One more time
One more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again
I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still, for one more day with you

She tilted her head up and waited for Max to realize that she was looking at him. When their eyes locked it was if the world stopped spinning and only the sound of the song floated through the air and their breathing became in sync.

One more day
One more time
One more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again
I know what it would do

Leave me wishing still for one more day
Leave me wishing still for one more day...
With you

As the song came to an end, Max and Liz never realized that they were now the only two people standing on the dance floor. Nor did they notice that Isabel and Maria were both giving each other pats on the back for a job well done.

Liz didn’t blink; she didn’t think she was breathing. She was lost. Lost in a world where her and Max were together.

Max stared into her big brown eyes and probably for the first time in a long time did he realize, how badly he messed up. And how he lost the best thing that he ever had. Now he needed to figure out where to go from there.

Hey guys, just stoppin by real quick to drop off the new part. As always, thank you for your feedback, and we hope you enjoy!

Chapter 7

Liz woke up, slowly sitting up and becoming aware of her surroundings. She was still in Roswell, at Michael and Maria’s house. As the events of last night flooded back to her, she groaned, dropping back into the pillows and pulling the blanket over her head.

No less than ten seconds later, her alarm clock went off, annoying alerting her to the fact that she needed to drag herself out of bed and get in the shower. She huffed, pulling the comforter off of her face, slamming her hand down on the alarm clock to silence it.

After a few minutes, she finally got up, turning off the alarm clock and heading towards the bathroom. She grabbed a pair of jeans and a hooded sweatshirt before turning on the shower and getting in.

She washed her hair, trying to wash away the memory of being back in Max’s arms as they’d danced last night. After the song ended, they stood for an uncertain amount of time, just staring at each other.

Liz was still unsure of what had finally snapped them out of it, but she’d jumped away from Max as if he’d burned her, quickly making her way back to the table and telling them that she was going to walk home.

She’d left before anyone could protest, quickly running two block before she allowed herself to slow down. Thankfully, due to constantly running around at work, she could run fairly well in high heels. She was both glad, and slightly upset that Max didn’t chase after her.

She sighed, mentally belittling herself for thinking of him as she turned off the shower and started drying off.

She threw her wet hair up in a ponytail, before throwing on her jeans and sweatshirt. All she was doing today was going with Michael and Maria to check up on a few last minute things, she didn’t need to look good.

She made her way out of her room, and began her decent down the stairs. She stopped abruptly after hearing Max’s voice, followed by a shrill giggle that she knew didn’t belong to Maria. She peeked down into the livingroom, noticing Maria and Michael on the love seat, and Max and a blonde girl on the couch. Liz saw red when the blonde laughed again, leaning into Max, putting her hand on his leg.

Liz had no idea who she was, but she didn’t like her. She was your typical blonde haired, blue eyed, big breasted bimbo, dressed to perfection in a simple black skirt, black high heels and a light blue tank top.

Liz glanced down at her outfit, quickly spinning around and running back to her room. She quickly dried and curled her hair, then threw on some make-up and jewelry before quickly getting redressed. She made her way to the mirror and looked herself up and down.

She was wearing a light, mint green camisole top with beige lace around the bottom, and around the neckline, which was fairly low. Over that, she had a pink and beige plaid tweed blazer, and the matching skirt, which came down to brush her knees. The whole outfit was topped off by beige, high heeled strappy sandals.

She smiled at her reflection and began to make her way to the stairs. She took a deep, calming breath at the top of the stairs, then started down.

When she reached the bottom, Maria stopped talking mid-sentence, and Michael’s eyebrows shot up to his hairline. Following their gaze, Max turned around to find Liz already making her way through the livingroom and into the kitchen. She could feel his eyes on her until she was out of his eyesight, which she was very pleased with. She grabbed a cup of coffee before walking back into the livingroom. She came to stand next to the love seat, looking down at Maria. “Morning, birthday girl.” Liz said, smiling brightly at Maria, then Michael.

Maria looked Liz from head to toe. “You look hot! Where are you going?” She questioned.

“I’m going with you and Michael, don’t you remember?” Liz sighed. “We had this all planned out a few days ago.”

“Oh, I knew about that. Why are you dressed like that, then?” Maria looked to Michael for answers, but he just shrugged.

“I wanted to look nice, since when is that a crime?” Liz shot back, turning her gaze to Max and the blonde. “Max.” She greeted him with a smile, tossing her hair over her shoulder.

“Hi Liz.” He replied, his eyes traveling up and down her body. “You look really nice today.”

“Thank you.” She glanced at Tess, then over to Maria, raising her eyebrows in question.

“OH!” Maria shook her head, realizing her mistake. “I’m sorry, I totally spaced out. Liz Parker, this is Tess Harding. Tess, this is Liz.” Liz stepped forward, giving Tess a fake smile as they shook hands. “Liz is one of our best friends from high school.” Maria explained. “Tess is Michael’s cousin, she lives in Michigan, but she was on her way to California and decided to stop by for a day or two.”

“That’s nice.” Liz said, taking another sip of her coffee. “Well, hate to break this up, kids, but we need to get going. I want to get this done as soon as possible and go get something to eat, I’m starving.”

“Ok, we’ll meet you in the car?” Maria asked, getting up to search for her purse. Liz nodded, and without so much as another glance is Max’s direction, she walked out the door and got in her car.

Liz watched as Maria and Michael came out of the house, turning around to say something to Max and Tess as they came out behind them. As Maria and Michael were getting in the car, Max said something to Tess, who smiled widely and nodded enthusiastically, before sashaying to her car. Max walked to his car, getting in and taking off with Tess following him. Liz resisted the urge to growl over the fact that it appeared they had made plans. She took a deep breath, before putting the car in reverse and backing down the driveway, seemingly unaware of Michael and Maria already bickering.

**********

After only fifteen minutes in Home Depot, Liz completely gave up getting anything done with both Maria and Michael there. They started yelling so loud that everyone had stopped to stare at them. Liz had to drag them both out of there, then yelled at them in the parking lot, telling them that she’d handle the rest of it herself and wanted no further input from either of them.

They had both remained silent on the drive over to the Crashdown, where Liz had decided they would go for lunch without even opening the topic for discussion, knowing that Maria and Michael would somehow end up fighting about it.

She pulled into a parking space out in front of the café before unbuckling her seatbelt and stepping out of the car. Maria and Michael filed out behind her and fell into step as they made their way to the door. Just as they were reaching it, the door opened from the other side, and Tess stepped out.

“Oh, hey guys.” She smiled at them. “How did it go?”

“Don’t ask.” Liz grumbled, shooting a look over her shoulder at Michael and Maria. “What are you doing here?” She turned her attention back to Tess.

“Oh, I just stopped in to have a soda with Max.” She replied, as if it were nothing. She clearly knew nothing about the history of Max and Liz. “He invited me to your birthday party tonight, Maria, I hope that’s alright with everyone.”

“Yeah, that’s fine.” Maria replied, glancing briefly at Liz to check her reaction to the news.

Liz’s facial expression remained neutral, not letting on that she was secretly daydreaming about knocking Tess’ teeth down her throat just at the thought of her have any plans whatsoever with Max. “So we’ll see you tonight, then?” Liz asked, moving around Tess to go inside.

“Yeah.” Tess answered back. “I’m just heading to the mall to hopefully find a nice outfit to wear tonight. Wouldn’t wanna make Max look bad.” She giggled.

Liz faked a laugh in reply before mumbling a goodbye and walking inside. She noticed Max at the counter, but simply tossed her purse into the booth that they used to always sit in back in high school, and walking into the back to say hi to her dad, who was working the grill. “Hey, Daddy.” Liz greeted, rising up on her tip-toes to place a kiss on his cheek, and then flick a piece of hair out of his eyes. “You need a haircut.”

“You sound like your mother.” Jeff Parker grumbled, flipping the burgers on the grill before lowering the fries into the hot grease. He glanced over at Liz. “You look very nice today.”

“Thanks.” Liz replied, doing a little twirl for him. “Just a little something I threw together.” She fibbed slightly. “Mom upstairs?”

“Yeah, she’s supposed to be down in a few minutes. Agnes called in sick. Again.” Jeff muttered something else under his breath, but Liz didn’t catch it.

“Ok, well, I’m gonna go get something to drink and sit down. I’m having lunch with Michael and Maria.” She started to back away. “And probably Max, since he’s already here. I’m sure Michael’s gonna invite him to eat with us.”

Jeff nearly dropped the spatula as he turned to look through the order window. “Evans.” He growled, his eyes landing on Max, who had, indeed, moved from the counter to sit down with Michael and Maria. “You stay away from that boy. He’s nothing if not bad news. Thinking he’s a big hot shot basketball player, I’ll show him a thing or two if he tries anything.” Jeff started ranting, flinging his arms around in front of his face.

“Dad, stop. You’re gonna scare the customers away.” Liz reprimanded, patting him on the arm. “He can’t get to me, Daddy, because I’m not going to let him. I have a wonderful life in Atlanta, and he’s not part of it. I’m not going to let him mess it up either. Don’t worry.” Liz soothed.

“Yeah, ok.” Jeff nodded, going back to the grill.

Liz rolled her eyes at her fathers protectiveness as she made her way back into the diner, immediately walking behind the counter to pour herself a cup of coffee. It wasn’t too long after that she heard someone whistle behind her. “Well, well. Look what we have here.”

Liz sighed, turning around, prepared to curse out the asshole who thought she could be talked to like she was a piece of meat. Once she saw who the remarks were coming from however, all rebuttals faded away. Her mouth opened in a shocked smile as twinkling blue eyes looked at her, a mixture of amusement and happiness. “Kyle Valenti, Look at you!” Liz gushed, taking in his police uniform.

“That’s Deputy Valenti, darlin. I’m working right now.” He winked playfully at her. “You move back here? I haven’t seen you in forever.” He went on.

“Oh, no. Didn’t move back. I’m just here helping Maria DeLuca and Michael Guerin decorate their house. I’m an interior designer.” She explained, glancing towards the booth where they were all seated, seeing them all watching her.

“Yeah? Well, good for you.” Kyle hadn’t stop smiling since he’d laid eyes on her. “Cup of coffee to go, please?” He teased her, since she still had the coffee pot in her hand.

Liz laughed, but went ahead and got him the coffee anyway. “On the house, just don’t let my dad know about it.” She giggled.

“It’ll be our secret.” Kyle blew on his coffee, attempting to cool it down. “Where are you living these days?”

“Atlanta, Georgia” Liz supplied, adding the Georgia accent, that she still had yet to pick up. Liz glanced over at Max, who had plopped himself down next to Kyle on another bar stool. “Yes?” Liz asked him.

“The waitress is over there. What are you getting?” Max asked, eyeing Kyle. “Valenti.”

“Evans.” Kyle replied, tipping his hat in a move that mirrored the one his father was constantly doing. Liz held in a giggle, remembering when Kyle used to deny that he’d ever get into law enforcement, like his father and grandfather. Now, he was almost a spitting image of Jim Valenti.

“I can put in my order separately, Max. I am pretty close with the management and all.” Liz replied, hoping to shoo Max back to the booth where he’d been before. The tension was rising with him being there.

He made a grunting noise before dragging himself off the stool and going back to the booth. “You two end up married?” Kyle asked as Liz began taking a sip of her own coffee, but then began choking once Kyle’s question registered.

She cleared her throat a few times, before letting out an uncomfortable laugh. “Uhm, no. No. Never did that.” She flashed him a little smile. “He broke up with me after he got back from NBA training camp. Hadn’t seem him since then, until a few days ago.”

“So it wouldn’t be totally inappropriate to ask you if you had plans tonight?” Kyle smirked.

Liz was slightly taken aback. “Oh. No, it wouldn’t be inappropriate. I do, however, have plans.” She drew out.

“Say no more, I completely understand.” Kyle nodded, already getting up. “It was nice seeing you, Liz. You look great.”

“No, wait.” Liz called him back, remembering Tess’ comments as she was leaving. “It’s a birthday party for Maria. I mean, those are my plans for tonight. You could come with me. I mean, if you want to.” She smiled shyly at him.

“How about you give me your number and I’ll call you when I get off work?” Kyle suggested.

Liz grabbed a napkin and a pen, quickly writing down her cell phone number and handing it to Kyle. “I’ll talk to you later?” She asked.

“Count on it.” Kyle winked at her again, putting the number in the breast pocket of his shirt. “Thanks for the coffee.” He tipped his hat again before walking out the door.

Liz grabbed her coffee, quickly writing out a ticket for her lunch and putting it on the ticket wheel before going back over and sitting down in the booth next to Max. Michael and Maria had sat together, of course, forcing her to sit where she did.

“What was all that about?” Maria asked, taking a drink of her soda.

“Nothing, really.” Liz waved her hand in the air. “Just some catching up. He asked what I was doing now, and where I lived, if Max and I were married, to which I choked on my coffee, then told him absolutely not.” Liz glanced at Max, whose eyebrows suddenly drew together. “Then he asked me if I had plans tonight, and I told him I did, and then I kinda invited him to your party.” She looked at Maria apologetically. “I hope it’s ok.”

“No, its not.” Max threw out there, causing everyone to look at him.

“You invited Tess, don’t even start with me.” Liz blew him off, looking back at Maria. “Well?”

Maria looked from Max to Liz, clearly torn as to what she should do. “It’s ok with me.” She finally said.

Max sighed before scooting closer to Liz. “I’m outta here. Get up, please.” Liz stood up, allowing Max to scoot out of the booth before she sat back down. “I’ll see you guys later.” He said, already halfway out the door.

“Who pissed in his Wheaties?” Liz asked, completely oblivious.

Maria rolled her eyes. It was gonna be a long night.

**********

Max slammed the front door closed behind him, causing Isabel to jump. “Max? What’s wrong?” She asked as he stormed into the room and threw himself down on the other end of the couch.

“I’m an idiot.” He replied, glancing over at her. Her facial expression was clearly asking for a little more information as to how he concluded that about himself. He sighed, shoving his hands through his hair. “I invited Michael’s cousin Tess to Maria’s birthday party tonight. She was over at Michael’s earlier when I went over there. I guess Liz ran into her when she was leaving the Crashdown and Tess told them about it, so Liz invited Kyle Valenti.” Max spat his name out like it was poison on his lips.

“And you wanted her to go alone?” Isabel asked. When Max nodded, she slowly nodded as well. “Ok, so you didn’t want her to have a date, even though you already had one?”

“Well, it sounds stupid when you say it.” Max mumbled.

“That’s because it IS stupid. I, however, am not. I see right through you, Max. You’re still in love with Liz, no matter how much you want to deny it, so why did you invite Tess?” Isabel drew her legs up underneath her, turning to face her brother.

“I didn’t know she was going to consider it a date.” Max dropped his head back against the couch. “That’s not the truth.” He sighed. “I wanted Liz to be jealous. I wanted to know that she still cared, but she obviously doesn’t.”

“You’re so blind, its ridiculous.” Isabel shook her head. “She IS jealous, Max. Why do you think she invited Kyle? To make YOU jealous. She cares, probably a lot more than she wants to. You have to look at it from her perspective... you broke her heart. She doesn’t want to miss you, she doesn’t want to care, she doesn’t want to give a flying fuck about you. But she does, and it scares her.”

Max sat up a little. “She said all that?” He asked, hopefully.

Isabel gave Max a small smile. “No. She didn’t say any of it. But...” Isabel tagged on when Max fell back against the couch with a groan. “She says a lot when she keeps her mouth shut. It’s all in her eyes. She’s going to crack, Max. I’d bet that by the end of this party tonight, she’s gonna crack.”

“And if she doesn’t?” Max asked, afraid to look over at Isabel, but instead picking at one of the throw pillows.

“She’ll come around eventually.” Isabel stated matter-of-factly.

“That’s it?” He glanced over at her. “That’s all the advice you have?”

“That, and... look hot tonight. Get all dressed up in a nice suit, or whatever and take her breath away.” Isabel smiled. “Oh, and don’t hang all over Tess. That’s just going to make her hang all over Kyle, and that’s not going to get either of you anywhere.”

Max sighed. “This sucks.” He sat, pondering his situation for a minute. “I’m going to go take a nap. Wake me up in time to get ready.”

Isabel didn’t say anything as Max walked out of the room and made his way upstairs to the guest room where he was staying. Isabel waited until she heard the door close before snatching up the phone and quickly dialing Maria’s number.

**********

Liz finished touching up her curls, shaking her head slightly to observe her hair from all angles. She’s tuned out Maria about ten minutes ago, when she started going on and on about what Michael might be getting her for her birthday. Liz came out of the bathroom, switching off the light behind her.

Maria was sitting on the edge of the bed, still babbling like there was no tomorrow. Liz walked across the room and glanced out the window towards the street. She noticed Isabel’s car was in the driveway, which wasn’t the case a few minutes ago. “Isabel’s here.” Liz announced to Maria.

Isabel popped into the room, as if on cue. “Hey guys.” She smiled at them, dropping down onto the bed next to Maria. “Happy birthday. You look amazing.” Isabel gave Maria a kiss on the cheek. “Liz, you look beautiful as ever.”

Liz’s gaze dropped down to her dark blue halter top dress with the asymmetric hem, and she self-consciously smoothed her hands down the front of it. “Thanks. You do, too.”

“Can we leave yet?” Maria whined, bouncing on the bed like a three year old.

“God, Maria, calm down. The limo isn’t even here yet.” Isabel placed her hands on Maria’s shoulders, trying to keep her in one place.

“Limo?!” Maria squawked, a huge smile spreading across her face.

“Ah, hell.” Isabel shook her head. “I guess it was still a surprise. Michael hired a limo to take you to your big birthday bash in serious style.” Isabel smiled. “Why the hell do you think I came here instead of going straight to the restaurant?”

“Really? He did that? Aww, how sweet.” Maria smiled.

“Yeah, I’m sure it was a real sweet phone call he made.” Isabel rolled her eyes. “This worked out well, though. Kinda like a double party, of sorts.”

“What do you mean?” Liz asked, squirting some perfume on her wrists, then rubbing her wrists behind her ear.

“Well, its like a birthday party for Maria, and a goodbye party for Max.” Isabel explained. “See? Double party.”

“Whoa, whoa. Wait a minute.” Liz held up her hand. “Rewind the tape. What do you mean, goodbye party for Max?”

“He’s leaving tomorrow morning. You didn’t know that?” Isabel asked, glancing at Maria, who simply looked the other direction. She’d put off telling Liz that Max was leaving, for fear of how Liz would react.

“Oh.” Liz blankly replied. She glanced back out the window. “Limos here. Let’s go.” She grabbed her purse and headed towards the front door, a guilty Isabel and Maria following behind her.

**********

Liz glanced around the restaurant, smiling slightly at what a wonderful job Michael had done with the whole party. He’d recruited Liz a month earlier to help him plan something, and once they’d decided on it, he took charge. The place was beautiful anyway, and Michael had gotten dozens upon dozens of Maria’s favorite flowers and had them placed all over. A large table against the back wall was stacked with towers of presents, and it appeared as almost everyone in Roswell had turned out for the bash. Music pumped through the speakers, and everyone appeared to be having a blast, either dancing or mingling.

In her perusal of the place, her eyes had inevitably landed on Max and Tess, who were having a conversation with Isabel and Alex. Max was talking, and Tess threw her head back, laughing at whatever Max had said, before placing her hand on his arm. Liz scowled before turning around, taking her apple martini from the bartender, her sixth one of the evening.

She made her way back over to Kyle, who was chatting with someone that Liz didn’t recognize, even though she’d been introduced to him not ten minutes ago. The alcohol was definitely working against her in that regard.

She stepped back up next to Kyle, and his hand immediately came to rest on the small of Liz’s back as he said goodbye to who he was talking to, turning his full attention to Liz. “Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?” He asked, guiding her towards a table where Michael and Maria were sitting.

Liz caught Max’s gaze from where he was now stationed at the bar. She’d seen him over there quite a few other times during the night, he was apparently getting smashed as well. “Only about a dozen times.” Liz giggled in response to Kyle’s statement, noticing a slight slur when she spoke.

They made their way through the crowd, finally making it to the table and sitting down. In a matter of only five minutes, Liz had drained her martini, and excused herself to use the restroom, and get another drink.

She dropped her glass off at the bar and ordering another one before making her way down the hallway towards the bathroom. Once she’d handled that, she did a quick hair fluff before opening the bathroom door and walking right into Max.

Due to their heavy alcohol consumption thus far, they both stumbled back a few feet, before righting themselves again and standing awkwardly for a minute.

“Hi.” Max finally ventured, nervously scratching behind his ear.

“Hi.” Liz echoed, smoothing out the front of her dress.

“Having a good time with Kyle?” Max asked, his disapproval of the whole thing evident in the tone of his voice.

“I’m having a wonderful time.” Liz said forcefully, using any ammo she had in her arsenal to make Max jealous.

“Well, isn’t that just wonderful news?” Max shifted his weight from one foot to the other, somehow managing to almost fall over in the process.

Liz burst out in a fit of laughter the minute he did it. “Smooth move, Super Star.” She managed once the laugher had died down.

“Why do you keep calling me that?” Max asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

“It’s true, right? You’re a big basketball super star.” Liz slurred, poking her finger at him. “Love the game more than anything else. Make it priority number one, and all that.” She rambled on.

“What is that?” Max threw his arms up in the air. “You know that you’re more important than basketball ever could be!”

Liz’s eyes automatically teared up, and she blinked rapidly in an attempt to keep herself from crying. She could feel the tears on her lashes, but had managed to keep herself from actually crying. “Yeah, you made that abundantly clear last time you had to choose, didn’t you?” That knocked the wind out of Max’s sails, he could do little more than gape at her after a statement like that. Liz tilted her head towards Max, as if straining to hear something. “Oh. What’s that? No wise-ass retort? C’mon Evans! Let’s hear it!” Liz looked up at Max from under wet lashes. “Screw it. I’m done with all this. Go enjoy the party, since, ya know, it’s doubling as a going away party for you.”

“Why are you so upset at me?!” Max threw out once he found his voice again.

“Because you always leave, Max!” She blurted out.

“I can’t help that I travel a lot, Liz! It’s part of the fucking job!” Max yelled.

“No!” Liz finally lost it. “You always leave me!” As soon as the words left her mouth, her eyes grew wide, realizing the Pandora’s Box that she just opened with that one slip of the tongue. She quickly turned to retreat, but Max grabbed her wrist.

“Whoa. Wait just a damn minute.” Max demanded. “You can’t say something like that and then run away. What does that mean?”

“Nothing, Max. It doesn’t matter, just forget about it.” Liz practically begged.

“If it doesn’t matter, then why do you care that I’m leaving?” He let go of her wrist, hoping she wouldn’t run again, and hoping for an answer.

“I don’t.” Liz whispered, even though the shattered tone of her voice told a completely different story.

She turned once again to leave, when Max reached out again and grabbed onto her hand. He gave her a soft tug in his direction and when she came back around to face him, his hands came up, framing her face and his lips crashed down on hers.

Her arms instinctively went up around his neck as she reciprocated the kiss, opening her mouth when his tongue swept across her lips. They poured every emotion they’d felt for each other over the last six years into that kiss. Max’s hands left her face, sliding down the side of her body and came to rest on her hips. He pulled her roughly against him, banding his arms around her waist to prevent her escape. He wanted her to stay right where she was for the rest of his life.

The minute Liz’s body pressed into Max’s, she broke the kiss and tried to push herself out of his arms. “Let me go.”

“No.” Max stated. “I’m not letting you run from me anymore.” He continued to hold her even as she struggled against him. “Please, Liz. Please don’t run from me.” He whispered against her temple.

“I didn’t run from you.” She gave up fighting. “I never ran from you. You ran from me.” The tears began cascading down her cheeks as she looked up into Max’s eyes. “I don’t get it.”

“Get what?” Max gently prodded, hoping she would give him an answer instead of clamming up and pushing away.

“I don’t understand what I did wrong.” She whispered, her chin trembling. “Why wasn’t I good enough for you?”

Max felt like he’d been punched in the stomach with a sledge hammer. Is that what she thought? That entire time, she’d believed that she wasn’t good enough, and that’s why he’d broken up with her? “Liz...” He whispered, his eyes welling up with tears.

“Liz?” Maria’s voice sounded from down the hall, as the clicking sound of her heels on the tile came closer and closer. Liz gave Max a hard shove away from her and reached up, trying her best to look like she hadn’t been crying. Maria rounded the corner and stopped when she saw Liz and Max. It was obvious that Liz had been crying, and Max looked... broken. “What’s going on, guys?” Maria looked back and forth between them.

“I’m not feeling well. I’m gonna leave.” Liz turned to face Maria. “I’m sorry, sweetie. I know this was your big night and all...”

“No, its ok. If you don’t feel good you should go get some sleep.” Maria knew Liz just wanted to run from Max, but she pretended to believe the sick story. From the look on Liz’s face, something had happened, something big. Maria gave Liz a hug, her eyes locking with Max’s over Liz’s shoulder for a moment before Maria released Liz and began walking her back into the party.

Liz apologized to Kyle for having to leave, and he offered to take her home, which she declined, telling him to stay and enjoy the party. She said goodbye to Michael and Maria before getting in the limo and leaving.

As soon as the limo pulled away, Michael turned to Maria. Before he could even speak, she beat him to the punch. “I know what you’re going to say, just... don’t. Please?” He simply nodded and Maria made a bee-line for Isabel, grabbing her out of the conversation she was having and dragging her off to the side. Maria sighed, before meeting Isabel’s gaze. “I think we made a huge mistake, Iz.”

A/N - What to say...we both understand how you guys are feeling about Max, but don't worry this part will help shed some light as well future parts. Anyway...just want to say thank you for the great feedback and hope you enjoy this next part...

Chapter 8

“Liz what happened the night of my party?” Maria asked as the girls waited for their breakfast order to be served. It had been almost three days and Liz still hadn’t spoke about it.

“Maria, I don’t want to talk about it. It doesn’t even matter anymore. Max is gone, like he always is and I’m going home soon. End of story.” Liz was trying not to let Max get to her. She needed to move on and the only way to do that was to avoid any and all conversations having to do with him.

Isabel sat back and sipped on her cup of coffee. She had a long talk with Max about what happened that night, so she knew the story. In fact, the conversation ended up in an argument that Alex had to break up. Isabel was furious for Max not apologizing for the way he left her all those years ago. Max had given her the excuse that he wasn’t thinking straight and once he kissed her any logic he had left that wasn’t affected by the alcohol pumping through his veins flew out the window.

“I know you don’t want to talk about it Liz, but it might do you good to get it off your chest.” Maria prodded further, knowing that she might be touching on something that she might not be able to control.

“Get off my chest?! Are you serious?! You both know what he did to me. He hasn’t said he was sorry or that he made a mistake. Nothing! In fact, I get the, ‘don’t run away from me Liz,’ bullshit! I didn’t run, he left me and then he excluded me from his life! That was his choice not mine and now you want me to get it off my chest! Honestly, I don’t want to know anymore…I don’t care anymore and I…”

“Liz, I know how hurt you must be and I know that my brother has yet to prove a damn thing to you, but he feels trapped Liz.” Isabel tried to help Liz understand Max’s frame of mind for doing what he’s done, even though she still to this day didn’t know why he broke up with her.

“Trapped? Ha! He feels trapped. And what the fuck should I feel? He dumped my ass to play a fucking game with a bunch of guys. Oh! And please let’s not forget the mountain of girls I’m sure he’s fucked twice over again! So, now ask me why I don’t see how he has felt trapped.” Maria realized her mistake and knew that she should not have said a damn thing, but it was too late. Liz had some things she needed to say and now Isabel and Maria were going to have to sit and listen, as well as all the customers in the restaurant.

“Liz, relax. I’m sorry I even mentioned it.”

“No, this is good Maria. You’re right. I need to get a few things off my chest so that the both of you can understand that while I appreciate your help, it wasn’t nor will it ever be welcomed.” Liz let out sarcastically. She was still furious with the two of them. Shortly after Max left they both confessed to her that they had planned the entire reunion. Why couldn’t they leave well enough alone?

“Now, where was I?” Liz pretended to ponder the question all the while knowing exactly where she left off.

“Let me ask you a question Isabel, and you too Maria. He’s called you right? Kept in contact?” Liz’s eyebrows furrowed together in aggravation.

“Y-”

“Don’t answer that Isabel. Okay, so let me run down the list; Isabel, Maria, Michael, his parents I’m sure, but I wonder who’s missing off that list? Me! That’s who! He just dumped me, cut me off from his life, all the while knowing that he was breaking my heart. And it didn’t matter to him, I didn’t matter, our relationship didn’t matter! He made the choice not me!” Liz bit out angrily while trying to keep the tears from escaping past her lids.

“If Max regrets it, then he can live with it. I’ve done nothing wrong!” Liz hissed out as she eyed the waitress making her way to the table with their orders.

The three girls sat in silence as they ate their lunch. Maria was done with all conversations for the day, she just wanted to go home and bury herself in her bed. Isabel on the other hand was not through and had one more question for Liz.

“Isabel, I love you, but if you don’t let this topic drop I will never talk to you again.” The three girls were outside of the restaurant making their way to their cars.

“I know you won’t and I’m sorry. I love you, Liz but I need to ask you. And if after I’m through you never want to speak to me again, I’d understand.” Liz ran a frustrated hand through her hair and waited for Isabel to begin.

“You say that he didn’t keep in touch, and you’re right. But let me ask you Liz, if my brother didn’t care about how you felt don’t you think he would have continued to be a involved in your life? Wouldn’t that have hurt you more in the long run? Because honestly, you have to ask yourself, could you just be friends with him and talk to him as if you had no history? I honestly don’t think you could, so while I think it was wrong of him not to explain to you why he did what he did and how he did it, I can’t fault him for not speaking to you. I know it would have broken your heart and you wouldn’t have been able to let go and finish school and become the successful independent person standing in front of me, if he didn’t.” Isabel finished her speech and then fished inside her purse for her keys. Her hands were shaking because she was truly afraid that Liz would never speak to her again, but then she felt a hand on her arm.

Liz was speechless. It never dawned on her as to what fueled Max’s decision to not talk to her after he left. Now though, it was becoming clearer. He didn’t do it to hurt her; he did it to help her get over him. And maybe just maybe if she hated him enough, she wouldn’t hurt so bad.

It was all true. Everything Isabel said was true, that she couldn’t deny. He could have rubbed in her face the girls he was dating, or the good time he was having, but instead he let her hate him. Although the anger was justified it wasn’t really defined. Liz just hated him, period. There was no further explanation in her mind up until Isabel spoke.

However, if she was honest it was somewhat of a relief. With Max gone, she did go to school, she did become successful and she had to wonder, how successful she would have been following Max around the county. If she had continued to date him, she would have probably grown weary of the practices, the parties and the games.

That however still did not excuse or erase the fact that he made the decision, she would have been willing to compromise to be with him. It also didn’t excuse the fact that he had not shown any remorse upon their reunion. So Liz still had to question, why did he do it?

****

“What the fuck?! That’s a fucking bullshit call ref! Were your eyes closed! Damn!” Michael yelled out as the game went into double overtime with two seconds on the clock and Max was fouled and the refs didn’t make the call.

“Michael who the hell are you yelling at?” Maria asked as she and Liz made their way into the living room that same afternoon.

Liz stopped dead in her tracks when she happened to glance at the television. There he was and he looked so good, she thought. She couldn’t help it, she should have walked right upstairs but her feet wouldn’t allow her, she needed to see him one last time.

In the background she didn’t hear Maria and Michael arguing, all she heard was the loud cheering coming from the television, she stepped further into the living room. Now the camera had closed in on him about to make his free throw after getting fouled a second time.

She could almost feel the rapid beating of his heart and how he always told her how nervous he was on that line and how the only way he stopped himself from passing out sometimes was to think about her. He would tell her that he would stand there and think about her being the only person in the crowd, the only person that mattered.

Liz couldn’t stand it any longer, she had already seen too much. She quickly turned on her heals and ran up the stairs to her room.

“Oh yeah baby! They won!” Michael was cheering loudly and hadn’t even noticed Liz leave the room, he was that caught up in the game.

Maria came up behind him and slapped him on the back of the head. “Hey what the hell was that for?”

“For being an insensitive asshole. How could you watch the game with Liz here?”

“Look Maria, I had the game on before you came home and you were the one that asked who I was talking to.”

“I know but as soon as you saw us you should have changed it.” Maria hissed out trying to keep her voice low.

“Well fuck me then Maria, I didn’t know that I couldn’t watch a fucking basketball game in my own living room!” Michael said rising from the couch to stand in front of her.

“That’s not what I meant.” Maria finished flatly.

“You are the one that put this little plan into effect and now you can’ t deal with the consequences, but it’s not my fault.”

“I know Michael…I know. I’m sorry.” Michael didn’t want to argue with her, he loved her but she needed to mind her business, most of the time. So he just wrapped his arms around her and told her that things would work out the way they are supposed to.

****

“What was I thinking?” Liz muttered to herself as she tossed herself onto the bed. There were so many emotions running through her and she couldn’t grab onto any of them fast enough.

She loved him. And she was so angry with herself for still loving him. She guessed it had a lot to do with the fact that most of the plans she made for her future involved him. And now she was living her future and it didn’t seem right without him. She was happy with her life, but could she be happier with Max?

The answer to that she already knew. Yes. Liz knew she would feel complete, that’s the way being with Max made her feel.

The only problem was that although she knew she would be happier with Max, he wouldn’t be having anything to do with her for probably another six years. Liz felt helpless; she would not go to him. No matter what, it would have to be his choice. She would not allow him to see her broken, she let it slip once that night she was drunk, and she vowed she would never allow it to happen again.

****

“Kick ass game, Evans!” One of his teammates called out. It was indeed a great game, but he felt like something was missing. It was the same thing that had been missing from his life for the past six years, Liz. He packed up his bag and quickly made his way to his car that was waiting.

He threw his things down in his hotel room and then decided to take a quick shower to try and relax himself. As the spray of the hot shower cascaded around him, his thoughts wandered back to a time he and Liz had tried to take a shower together while they were still in high school…

“Max you won’t fit in here! Get out!”

“Liz, come on. Don’t you want me to wash your hair…your body.” Max leaned in close and whispered into her ear.

“Max, be good.” Liz tried to reprimand him, but he was already snaking his hands around her waist drawing her closer to his naked body. They had already made love the night before and he was so nervous so he didn’t take the proper amount of time to study her body.

“Stop staring Max! You’re making me all self conscious.” She slapped his arm gently and he brought her closer and sealed their lips. He could kiss her all day; he loved the feel of her soft lips against his.

“You’re so beautiful, Liz. How many times do I have to tell you?” He asked as they pulled away panting. When her eyes met his, he sucked in a ragged breath. He knew that look; it was the same one she gave him last night when she asked him to make love to her for the first time.

“Liz, you need to be good or I might have to take advantage of you in this little shower of yours.” Max joked with her. Liz let out a small giggle and gave Max a heated stare, which led to her being pressed into the tile wall behind her.

“God, Liz I love you.” Max moaned out as her tiny hand encased this throbbing erection. He quickly lifted her effortlessly against the wall of the shower and kissed her deeply before joining their bodies.

The cold water snapped Max back to the present. He tried to take his mind off of Liz, but it was proving futile. He quickly towel dried and put on his boxers and slipped under the sheets. He rolled over and lifted the phone from its cradle and dialed the familiar number.

“Hello?”

“Hey man, what’s going on?”

“Maxwell, fucking great game! Those refs were fucking assholes man!” Max laughed at the enthusiasm of his best friend.

“I know trust me. I was pissed off, but it all worked out, we kicked their ass.”

“Hell yeah.” They were both silent and Max knew why he called, but working up the nerve to ask was another story.

“Max, what’s on your mind?”

“How is she…Liz? How is she doing?” Max asked hesitantly and rolled onto his back.

“She’s doing good. She caught the tail end of the game…” Max’s ears perked up at that knowledge.

“Really?”

“Yeah but don’t let your dick get all hard yet dude, she ended up running upstairs to her room. Maria is up there with her now.”

“Is…did she cry?” Max asked brokenly. He was so tired of seeing her cry; he needed to do something and soon. He thought that he could stay away, but after seeing her he knew he was kidding himself.

“I don’t know. Max, I know what Maria and Isabel did was wrong, so I can’t say I supported them at all, but if I’m honest with you. I wanted it to work. You both deserve to be happy.” Max was beyond furious when he found out what his sister and friend had done to get them back together, and while he appreciated it, it was the wrong way to go about it.

“I know, but she can’t be happy with me. I destroyed that. But look, I don’t want to talk about that right now. I called for a reason.”

“Oh really? And what’s that? You gonna fly my ass out to see a live game or some shit?”

“Exactly.”

“Now that’s what I’m talking about! When? Where?” Michael was firing off the questions and Max couldn’t help but laugh.

“I have a home game next week. I’m going to fly you guys out.”

“Who are you talking about Max? You know Isabel, Alex, Maria and I are down for that, but we will never and I do mean never get Liz’s ass on a plane to watch you play.” Max signed in defeat; he knew he was kidding himself. But he needed to see her.

“I know that Michael but I can’t stop thinking about her…”

“Since when have you stopped thinking about her?” Michael tried to lighten the mood. He knew his best friend was torn between what he thought was the right thing and what he wanted.

“You’re right. But after our kiss…” Max closed his eyes remembering what it felt like kissing Liz again after all that time.

“Wait! Kiss? You kissed her? When did that happen?”

“It was at Maria’s party. We were both drunk and she was so pissed off with me and I couldn’t help myself. I felt like it might be my last chance to touch her. I lost her because I was stupid, but I needed to be selfish for that one last moment.” He was minutes from breaking down. He needed to finish this conversation before he totally lost it.

“Wow…I had no idea. Hell I don’t even think she told Maria that. Because you know and I know that Maria would have been rubbing that in my face.”

“I know. Okay let me talk to her.”

“Who?” Michael asked confused because surely he wasn’t asking to speak with…

“Liz. Michael just put her on for me.” Michael shook his head even though he knew Max couldn’t see him.

“That’s not a good idea.”

“Please.” Michael could hear the desperation in his friends voice and decided he couldn’t turn him down. If Liz didn’t want to talk to him, she could tell him herself.

“Hold on. Let me go to Liz’s room and drag Maria out first.”

“Okay.” Max took a deep breath waiting, he hoped she would at least get on the phone and decline his offer. He knew he was desperate but right now he would take what he could get.

*****

“Maria!” What did the man want now? Didn’t he know she was trying to mend fences with her best friend?

“It’s okay Maria, go see what he wants.” Liz laid back down against the pillows with her eyes closed. She was just telling Maria about the kiss her and Max shared. She might have been intoxicated but she was not paralyzed. Liz felt the kiss that Max gave her; she felt it down to her toes. Her heartbeat quickened and for just a moment she allowed herself to remember being with him.

He would cherish her with his lips and his body. She missed how he would cradle her against his body when she was cold and how he would carry her anywhere he could, even though she was capable of walking herself. It was the little things that added up to so much for Liz.

“Michael have you lost your fucking mind?!” Liz could hear Maria through the door, she was curious so she eavesdropped…a little.

“Maria, let her decide what she wants to do. It’s her life.”

“I know, but I promised her I wouldn’t interfere anymore.” Liz knew they were obviously talking about her, but why?

“We aren’t. In fact she gets to choose herself. She can either accept or decline.” They were silent for a moment before Liz heard Maria sigh heavily and agree. Liz quickly scrambled back to the bed and pretended like she had been there all along.

“Liz?”

“Yeah?”

“There’s someone on the phone for you.” Maria was being vague and Liz knew it.

“Who is it, Maria?” Liz raised her eyebrow suspiciously.

“Max.” What?! Why was he calling her? He never did before. Why today…why now?

“What does he want?” Liz crossed her arms. She would not give in. However that thought only lasted a moment because as soon as Liz saw Michael’s face she couldn’t help but let her curiosity get the best of her.

“Give me the phone.” Liz sighed and reached for the phone.

Max overheard the entire exchange between Michael and Maria as well as Maria and Liz, so now he waited with bated breath for Liz’s answer. He practically dropped the phone when she asked Michael to hand her the phone.

What should he say? Oh why had he not let Michael talk him out of this situation sooner?

“Hello, Max.” Liz greeted him flatly after Maria and Michael left the room.

“Hi, Liz.”

“What do you want?” Ouch! That hurt, but he knew he deserved it.

“I called Michael to tell him about my home game…in Boston next week…and I…I was inviting everyone to fly out to see it…and I…”

Liz rolled her eyes, she knew what was coming and she already knew her answer as well.

“Spit it out Evans. I don’t have all day.” Liz meant for the comment to come out harsh but ironically it came out very playful.

“Don’t get your panties in a twist Parker.” Max joked back with her.

“Ha ha! Now seriously what do you want?” Liz sank herself further into the bed, pulling the comforter up to her neck.

“I wanted to ask you if you’d like to go.” He was barely breathing as we waited for her answer.

“I don’t think that…” Liz stopped the moment she heard him cut her off, what could he possibly have to say, she thought.

“Wait!” What was he stopping her for? It would probably only end up with them arguing. No, he needed to tell her what he was feeling at that moment.

“I know you don’t think it’s a good idea. But I want you there, Liz. I know you’ll have a good time and you can even root for the other team if you want.” Liz giggled despite herself.

“Max, I have no doubt that I’ll have a good time, but why now Max? Why after all these years? You could have asked me before.” Liz finished sadly.

“Could I have, Liz? I don’t think I could. I left you and I deserve all the resentment you have towards me…it’s just that I feel like you came back into my life and I just want you to see me once…just once and then you never have to see me again. I promise.” Max was practically in tears. It was selfish he knew, but he hoped that she understood his intentions. Which were to just see her, but he couldn’t tell her that because he knew she would not welcome the thought.

Liz had to swipe the tears that had fallen from her eyes at Max’s words. She had such a soft spot for him, and so with very little reluctance she gave him her answer.

“Okay Max. I think…I think it will be fun. I’d love to go.”

“Really?” Max bounced off his bed and began pacing. Was this really happening or did he hear wrong?

“Yes, now let me go before I change my mind.”

“Right. Thank you, Liz. Goodnight.” He finished softly.

“Night, Max.” After she hung up the phone she screamed into her pillows letting out some of her anxiety.

“What the hell did I just get myself into?” She mumbled to herself as she closed her eyes, and prayed for sleep to come.

Chapter Nine

Max tugged nervously on the zipper of his warm-up jacket, glancing up slightly as someone clapped a hand on his shoulder and plopped down on the bench next to him. Drew went about making sure his shoes were laced up tightly before looking at Max.

“You ok, dude?” Drew asked. “You look like you did before our first pro game.” He joked.

Max smiled slightly at the memory. The night of his first game as a part of the Boston Celtics, he honestly thought he was going to pass out before he even stepped foot onto the court. His heart had hammered against his chest so badly, Max was sure it was going to break right through his ribs. He’d had butterflies in this stomach, threatening to either choke him, or make him throw up. Nothing, however, could stamp out the feeling of pure excitement he’d felt, knowing that he was about to go out onto that court and play basketball in the NBA.

“Dude, what is up with you?” Drew laughed, giving Max a slight shove, breaking him out of his reverie.

“Liz is here.” Max stated, glancing over at Drew.

The laughing smile left Drew’s face as Max’s words sunk him. “Ex-girlfriend Liz? Hot brunette?” Max nodded, rubbing his hands over his face. “Here, here? Like... in the arena, gonna watch the game, here?” Max nodded again. “Damn, dude. That’s big.”

Max sighed. “Yeah, I realize that. I still can’t believe she even agreed to come out here after the way we left things back in Roswell.”

Drew shook his head sympathetically. “You know what I’ve always told you, man. I’ve never seen you smile like you do when you’re thinking about her. You two are meant to be together, and despite the shady way your sister and that Maria chick tried making it happen, they were really doing you a favor. Sooner or later, you’re going to have to pull your head out of your ass and realize what everyone else already knows.”

Max’s reply was to simply raise his hand and flip Drew the bird, snorting a laugh as Drew responded by blowing him a kiss. Ever since training camp, Drew had been the guy on the team that Max had been closest to, they’d even shared an apartment together the first year they were on the team, before they both bought houses. Drew knew all about Liz, and made it known that he thought Max was an idiot for breaking up with her.

Before anything else could be said, Coach walked into the locker room and started his usual pre-game lecture. Max tried to pay attention, but his thoughts kept drifting back to Liz. This is gonna be a long game, Max thought.

****

Liz bounced her legs nervously as she glanced around the arena. She squirmed around in her seat, cursing herself for the hundredth time for even agreeing to come out here. While she loved the fact that she was sitting court side at a pro basketball game, she hated the fact that she was sitting directly across from where Max would be sitting, if he were ever put on the bench, which Liz found highly unlikely... at least not for more than a few minutes to let him rest.

She glanced over to where the aisle led to the way out the arena, debating on sprinting out of there like her life depended on it. She clutched her purse tightly in her lap, poised for escape. This was a horrible idea, she could feel it. She needed to get the hell out of there while she still had the chance.

“Don’t even think about it, Parker.” Isabel said, reaching over and ripping Liz’s purse from her hands before setting it on the floor by her feet. “You’re not going anywhere.”

“This was a bad idea. I shouldn’t be here.” Liz tried to reason with Isabel, reaching over Alex to make a grab for her purse.

Isabel slapped at Liz’s hands as Alex grabbed her shoulders and sat her properly in her seat. Alex looped his arm around her shoulders, bringing her in close to his body. “You already told Max you’d be here, you can’t just leave.” When Liz opened her mouth, a smart-ass reply on the tip of her tongue, Alex shushed her. “I know, I know. Max left you, he’d deserve it, lets not go there, shall we? Just sit and enjoy the game, Liz.” Alex’s eyes pleaded with her to not make a big fuss.

The crowd erupted in applause as the team ran out from the locker room, single file, and began running though their warm-up drills. Liz caught Max’s eyes for a brief moment before he got into his position to warm-up rebound shots.

Liz turned back to Alex to say something, but before she could, Maria and Michael filed back into their seats, their arms loaded down with stuff from the concessions stand. Maria passed Isabel and Alex a big tub of popcorn, while Michael started passing over beers. He handed one to Liz, and she looked at him, questioningly. “Liquid Courage.” Michael supplied, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

Liz couldn’t hold back a laugh as she thanked him, bringing the cup to her lips to take a drink.

“Wait!” Maria cried, reaching over to stop Liz before she could take a sip of her beer. She held up her own cup. “A toast!” She supplied. “To finally, FINALLY getting Liz to one of these games... and it only took, what? Six years?”

Liz laughed, despite herself, and chugged half the contents of her plastic cup. She set it down at her feet before turning her attention back to the guys, who were still warming up.

“We Will Rock You” began playing, and everyone in the arena started stomping their feet and clapping in time with the music, except Liz, who had no desire to do so.

“C’mon!!” Maria yelled at her. “Don’t be like that! You know you’re having fun! I know you know you’re having fun, because you love basketball, and no matter the reason you’re here, you’re loving it!”

Liz simply shook her head, crossing her arms over her chest. She glanced back and forth between Maria and Alex, who looked like they were up to no good.

Without much warning, Maria uncrossed Liz’s arms, holding onto them tightly as Alex wrapped his hands around one of Liz’s thighs. Alex stomped Liz’s foot in time with the music, as Maria handled making her clap. Liz couldn’t help cracking up, trying to shake them off of her. “Ok, I can do it myself! Get off me!”

“No, actually, this is a lot more fun than just doing it yourself!” Alex replied, causing them all to laugh.

****

Max made his lay-up before jogging back into the line to continue warming up, but couldn’t hold back a snicker when he saw Maria and Alex practically attacking Liz, in an effort to make her play along with the song.

“What’re you giggling about, Evans?” Jake asked, coming up behind Max after making his own lay-up.

Max nodded his head over in the direction of his friends, as Liz continued her fight to break free.

Brian, who was in front of Max turned around and followed the other guys’ gazes. “Damn, check out the blonde all the way on the end! I’d like to get me a piece of that ass!”

Antonio, who was in front of Brian, turned around at that declaration, joining in the appreciation of the females. “I’d go for the other blonde. The one that’s all over that little brunette. She looks feisty as hell. Those are always fun in the sack.” He stated, garnering a high five from Brian.

Jake shook his head. “Forget that, I want the brunette. She is too fine!”

“Whose too fine?” Drew asked, as he fell into line behind Brian. The guys, minus Max, who was all but seething at this point, all nodded their heads in the direction they were staring. Drew immediately recognized Liz from the pictures Max had shown him, and glanced in Max’s direction.

“Which one you likin, Max?” Jake asked, digging himself into an even bigger hole without even knowing it. “I bet you like the tall blonde.” He gave Max a nudge with his shoulder.

“Actually.” Max bit out. “The tall blonde is my sister, Isabel.” Drew put his hand over his mouth to hold in the laughter as the rest of the guys who were part of the conversation attempted to retrieve their jaws from the floor. “My TWIN sister.” Max added.

“S-so, I guess you, uhm... you know t-the other ones too?” Antonio stuttered, feeling his face heat up.

“Yeah, I do.” Max nodded. “The shorter blonde, Maria, is engaged to my best friend, the large menacing looking guy sitting next to her. Oh, and the guy sitting between Isabel and the brunette, is her husband, Alex. And, the brunette is my ex-girlfriend, Liz.” Max stated casually, although all the guys knew he was probably beyond pissed.

They refrained from saying anything else as they finished warming up.

****

Liz, who had finally managed to shake off Alex and Maria, sat back in her chair, waiting for the game to start. The teams were done warming up, and were sitting on their respective benches waiting for the game to begin.

Maria leaned over slightly, causing Liz to look over. “What?”

“Have to noticed that... a good majority of the team is staring at us?” Maria asked, glancing over towards the bench out of the corner of her eye.

“They are?” Liz asked, turning her head back so she could see all the players. She was taken aback when, sure enough, more than half the team was staring in their direction. She turned back to Maria. “Why are they doing that?”

“I have a feeling it has to do with you and Max.” Maria glanced over one more time. “He might have mentioned you or something.”

“Now I know how the animals at the zoo feel.” Liz muttered. She turned so she was fully facing the team, and stared right back. When none of them got the hint, she crossed her arms over her chest, raising her eyebrows. She looked at them, one by one, until they got the hint and turned. “God.” Liz scoffed. “They’re not much for subtlety, are they?”

As the players went onto the court to start the game, she noticed that some of them still continued to glance her direction. I should have left when I had the chance, she thought.

****

The game went pretty smoothly until the third quarter. The Celtics were winning, and the crowd was pumped. Liz had to admit to herself that she was having a great time. Watching Max play basketball, live and in person, transported her back in time. She could remember going to his basketball practices and just watching him. The way he moved was like poetry. He always looked so strong, and confident out on the court. She missed seeing that.

Liz was broken out of her thoughts by the referees blowing their whistles as the guys all ran back to their respective benches. Apparently, one of the coaches had called a time out, because the guys were all grabbing some water, huddling up to talk about whatever was going on down there, and the cheerleaders walked a little further onto the court from their place on the sidelines, to keep the crowd entertained.

Liz couldn’t help looking at the girls, and wondering if Max had ever hooked up with any of them. They were all pretty cute, all had the kind of bodies that all women dream about having... yeah, Liz hated them.

The guys finished their huddles, and started walking back out onto the court, as the cheerleaders made their way back to the sidelines. Liz couldn’t hold back a giggle when one of the guys ran over to where the cheerleaders were, and pretended to be doing a cheer with them.

Max went over to grab him and get him back into the game, just as the coach started yelling at him to get his head in the game. Liz noticed that Max lingered over there a little longer than necessary, talking to the girls. He was talking quickly, probably to keep the trouble he would get into at a minimum, and he had a huge smile on his face, stretching from ear to ear. All the girls giggled at Max, one of them hitting him on the shoulder with her pom-poms as they all looked up at him with barely concealed adoration, all of them batting their eyelashes like he was the best thing since sliced bread.

Liz had finally had enough of watching Max flirt with his harem of cheerleaders. She grabbed her purse, and before anyone she was sitting with could say a damn thing, she got up and sprinted up the stairs and out of the arena.

Once she’d finally made it out, she quickly glanced both ways, trying to remember which way they’d came in from. Michael had gotten her another beer since that first one, so she wasn’t completely sure she could trust herself to remember which way they’d came from. She quickly walked up to the nearest security guard, and asked for the quickest way to an exit. He directed her towards the left, and she thanked him before power walking in that direction.

“Liz!” She heard Maria shout from behind her. She didn’t slow down, or turn around, determined to get out of there.

“Liz, wait!” Isabel yelled. She could hear the sound of their heels clicking quickly on the floor behind her, which only fueled her need to go faster.

She was all but running when two hands grabbed onto her arms, halting her escape. “I’m not going back in there, you guys. I just can’t.” Liz said, determination strong in her voice.

“We just wanna know what happened, Liz. You just bolted outta there like the place was on fire. I don’t get it.” Maria said, hoping for an explanation.

“I can’t just sit there and watch him flirt with all those cheerleaders. Its too hard.” She finally turned around, keeping her eyes downcast, embarrassed that she’d let herself get so upset about something so stupid.

They all stood there in silence for almost a minute, no one saying anything. Finally, Liz couldn’t take it, and she looked up. She barely contained a growl at the sight of the looks Maria and Isabel were sporting. “We don’t know what to say...” Isabel finally said, pity dripping from her voice.

Liz finally snapped. “Don’t. Pity. Me.” She bit out. Maria opened her mouth to respond, but Liz wouldn’t let her get a word in. “I don’t want your pity. I don’t want anyone’s pity. I don’t want to be here, please just let me leave.”

“How are you gonna get back to the hotel?” Isabel tried to reason with her. “We only rented one car, and Alex has the keys.”

“I’ll take a cab, I don’t care. I can’t go back in there.” The dam holding back her tears finally broke, and the tears began spilling down her cheeks. She reached up to wipe them away, laughing at herself. “Why did I think this was a good idea? Why did I agree to this?! You saw me the other day at your house, Maria! I couldn’t even watch the game on the damn TV without getting upset!”

She quickly put her hands over her face, mortified that she was doing this, in public, no less. Isabel and Maria put their arms around her, guiding her into the nearest ladies room. Maria went into a stall and grabbed some toilet paper, handing it to Liz. “You wanna talk about it?” Maria asked, as Liz wiped her eyes.

Liz stopped trying to fix her make up in the mirror, and turned around to face them. In truth, she did want to talk about, if for nothing else than to help them understand. She was sick of holding everything inside, and if they wanted to know, she’d tell them. She figured there was no use trying to fix her makeup anymore, she knew she was just gonna keep crying.

“You guys have no idea how hard it is.” Liz sucked in a shuddering breath. “On the one hand, I’m so proud of him. As long as I’ve known him, this is exactly what he wanted... and what I wanted for him too. We always used to talk about what we’d do once he finally got into the NBA, and once he was a big basketball star.” She paused, trying to keep her voice from breaking any worse than it already was. “Then, on the complete other side of the spectrum, it kills me. It kills me to know that the reason I don’t have him anymore is because of an orange ball.”

She couldn’t go on anymore, the sobs took over her body, shaking her small frame. Isabel and Maria enveloped her in a hug, just as Liz’s knees completely gave out. All three of them went down, none of them caring about the pain of their knees hitting the tile floor of the bathroom the way they did.

The three of them knelt on the floor for an unknown amount of time. Liz cried until she couldn’t cry anymore. Isabel and Maria even cried a little, the pain evident in Liz’s cries was simply too much for them.

When Liz’s sobs died down, Maria took the tissue from her hand, gently wiping the tears from her cheeks. “I’m so sorry we pushed you into this.” Maria said, glancing from Liz to Isabel. “We really just wanted you to be happy. I’m so, so sorry.”

Liz didn’t respond right away, she just stared at her hands in her lap. Finally she looked up. “You guys know how the other day at breakfast... I said that I didn’t care anymore?” She glanced at both of them, and they both nodded. “I lied. I still love him so much it hurts to even breathe. I don’t want to, but I do.” Liz whispered, brokenly. “I just don’t know what to do.”

“No more tears.” Isabel said, smiling slightly at Liz. Isabel opened Liz’s purse, taking out her makeup. She sat, facing Liz, and fixed the makeup that had been ruined during the breakdown. “I can tell you one thing about my brother. I never understand why he does the things that he does... I don’t even think he understands. I do know one thing for sure though. He loves you, Liz. You two are killing each other with this. After the game tonight, promise me that you’ll talk to him. I’m not asking you to lay yourself on the line and tell him how you feel, but you need to at least get an honest explanation for his actions. If you two can’t make it work, and I hope to God that you can, you two at least need to get all your past issues worked out before you part ways again. You know?”

Liz nodded slightly. She laughed slightly. “God, I feel stupid. I’m sitting on a dirty bathroom floor crying about my ex-boyfriend like I’m still in high school.” She pulled herself up off the floor, looking in the mirror. “Oh, man. I look like a train wreck.” She whined, desperately trying to fix her makeup.

“You look fine.” Maria argued. Liz gave up on fixing her makeup, walking towards the door to the bathroom.

Once they got outside, Isabel and Maria looked at her. “You gonna come back?” Isabel asked, a hopeful expression on her face.

Liz sighed. “Yeah, I guess.”

The girls looped their arms through hers, stopping off at the concessions stand to buy some more beers, make it look like they’d left for a reason.

After buying the drinks, the girls went back to their seats. Liz only glanced briefly at Max, who was sitting on the bench, taking a rest. She took her seat next to Alex, taking a big gulp of her beer before setting it at her feet with her purse.

“Welcome back.” Alex said, nudging her shoulder, smiling at her. “You’ll never guess what you missed.”

“What’s that?” Liz asked, smiling back at him. She could never not smile in Alex’s presence. His attitude was just too infectious.

“One of the dudes on the other team tried to pass the ball to one of the other guys, and a dude from Max’s team went to block him, and the ball got hit the other direction... nailed one of the cheerleaders right in the head. It was awesome!”

Liz burst into a fit of laughter, throwing her head back. She started laughing all over again when she looked over at Alex and saw the excited look on his face. “That’s the best thing I’ve heard all day.” Liz managed, bursting into another fit of laughter when Alex recreated the girls expression upon getting hit with the ball.

****

Max had been sitting on the bench for at least five minutes when he saw Liz, Isabel and Maria come back in. When he’d sat down, he’d been surprised to see them gone. He shot Michael and Alex a questioning look, but they’d both just shrugged their shoulders. Max now knew that the girls simply went on a beer run.

Max took another sip of the water he’d been handed earlier, wiping off his face and neck with a towel. He looked back up to see Liz laughing at something Alex had obviously said to her, since they were both laughing. Liz had her head thrown back, and Max couldn’t help but miss her so much it hurt in that moment.

Max rested his elbows on his knees, looking at the ground by his feet. He needed to focus, get his head back in the game. Every time he looked up to actually watch the game, his gaze had drifted back to Liz, so he’d resorted to simply staring at the floor.

His head snapped up at the sound of the buzzer, signaling that the fourth quarter was about to begin. Coach yelled his name, telling him to get back in and score some points.

Max stood up, and with one last glance in Liz’s direction, he trotted out onto the court.

****

As the fourth quarter went on, Liz found herself having more and more fun. She’d pretended not to notice when Isabel whispered to Alex what had happened, and Alex had spent the time since then making her laugh. She couldn’t say she was upset that he knew, he was helping her not fall into a funk over Max.

Liz watched as the guys scrambled down at the other teams basket, trying to get the ball to Max for him to make a shot.

Finally, Max had gotten open, and they’d passed him the ball. Liz watched as he dribbled down the court, going for a lay-up.

She glanced over briefly at Alex, laughing as he continued to pretend he was the announcer, commentating the game to her.

When she glanced back, she saw Max jump up to make the shot. She held her breath like she always did, just as anxious to see if it would go in the hoop as the guys on the court.

A player from the other team jumped up to try to block Max, and they slammed into each other. They both went down, as the ball swished through the hoop.

Liz cheered along with everyone else in the crowd, as the guy from the other team got up and walked away. Liz’s cheers died down when Max didn’t get up. She couldn’t really see through all the guys standing around him, but he’d obviously hurt himself. He was grabbing his leg but Liz couldn’t tell where.

She watched helplessly as the coaches and the medics rushed out onto the court. Between them and the players who’d made a circle around him, Liz couldn’t see a damn thing.

She glanced at Isabel and Alex, then at Maria and Michael. “Can you guys see anything? What’s going on?” She asked.

“I can’t see shit.” Michael all but yelled, craning his head in every possible direction to get a better look. “C’mon, dumbass, get outta way!” He yelled at no one in particular.

Liz’s eyes darted from the crowd around Max on the court, to the stretcher that was being brought in. “Oh, my God.” Liz whispered, over and over.

She blindly groped for Maria’s hand, breathing a little sigh of relief when Maria reached over, lacing her fingers through Liz’s. Alex did the same. Liz noticed that Maria and Michael, and Alex and Isabel were also doing so. She said a little prayer, knowing the others were doing the same. Max had to be ok.

She was taken a back slightly when, not for the first time, a good majority of the players on the team glanced in her direction. One of them broke from the group and ran over in her direction. After a few moments she recognized him. Drew Epley. He started playing for the Celtics when Max did. She also vaguely remembered Max mentioning they’d roomed together at training camp.

He stopped in front of her, looking unsure of himself. “What’s going on?” Liz finally asked. “Is he ok?”

Drew took a deep breath. “When he went down, he did something to his knee. We’re not sure what, exactly, is wrong with him, but I know he’s pretty hurt. They’re taking him to the hospital.” Liz only half listened as Isabel asked which hospital, already gathering up her stuff. Drew answered her, she guessed because suddenly he was talking to her again.

She shook her head slightly. “What?” She asked.

“He’s asking for you. He won’t let them move the stretcher until you’re there.” Drew explained, looking hopefully at Liz. Liz assumed Drew knew about everything that was going on. She couldn’t worry about that now, though.

“Yeah, ok.” She grabbed her purse, glancing at her friends. “I’ll see you guys there?” They all nodded, and took off towards the exit at full speed. She turned back to Drew as they disappeared through the entrance to the arena. “Take me to him.”

Drew held out his hand, and Liz quickly grabbed it, knowing it’d be a lot easier to get through all those people if she were holding onto Drew. He all but drug her across the court, pushing his way through all the other players.

Liz rushed to Max’s side as soon as she was through the circle. “Hey.” She smiled down at him slightly, slipping her hand into his. “You were doing pretty good until that.” She tried to joke.

“Are you coming with me?” Max asked, trying not to sound scared in front of his team mates.

“Yeah, I’m coming with you. Isabel, Alex, Maria and Michael already took off for the hospital, and I’m not leaving your side until I’m forced to, ok?” Liz reached up, brushing his bangs off his forehead.

“Ok.” Max nodded, gripping her hand a little tighter.

Liz ran beside the stretcher as they wheeled it towards a waiting ambulance. She had to wait outside until they had Max in there and all situated and then she climbed in, sitting next to him and instinctively reaching for his hand.

She was shocked to see tears start rolling down Max’s cheeks. “Hey, its ok. You’re gonna be fine.” Liz tried to reassure him, even though she had no idea if he’d really be ok.

He looked over at her, the tears continuing to fall. “I’m so sorry, Liz. For everything. I’m so sorry.” Max whispered.

It took Liz a minute to say anything back. Finally, she just pulled his hand toward her, pressing her lips to the back of his hand. “We’ll talk about all that later, ok? I promise.” She smiled at him, wiping his tears. “I’m not going anywhere.”
