Title: Like Father, Like Son.
Disclamer: the characters of Roswell doesn’t belong to me…
Summary: Took place in 2017. Alex Thomson is 16 as well as his girlfriend. He had been adopted when he was a baby as his father was just 18 and had, at the time, a really complicated life… Max Evans give up his child because he loved him but his son wants now to find out the real reasons…

Prologue:

“SHE IS WHAT?!”

Alex watched the two couple sitting before him and gripped Lily’s hand a little tighter in his. She was shaking, he could feel it. He could see her tears on her cheeks without looking at her face; all he had to do was listening to her sobs.

His father stood up and stared passing the floor of the small living room as Lily’s sat still on the couch struck by the new. Mrs. Stevens started to cry but Alex refused to cross his mother’s eyes.
He already knew what he would find: it wasn’t anger or surprise; it’d be disappointment.

She had told him; warn him; not once, not twice, but a thousand time. She had trusted him… Lily’s parents had trusted him.

“Are you sure?”
Hearing her voice brought tears in his eyes. He felt like a child, like a five-year-old who had just been caught stealing a cake in a bakery. The thing was that his mistake –if he was allowed to call it that way- was a lot worst that stealing a cake.

His head lowered as he nodded slightly. But he held back his tears.

“How old are you?”
Dr. Stevens’ dry voice brought him back to a reality he wasn’t even sure he had left. Was he waiting for an answer?

“I…I’m 16,… sir.”
Alex gulped some air in his lungs, trying to swallowed passed the lump in his throat. He could swear he would be dead by now if his girlfriend’s father had had a gun under his hand. Just watching him in the eyes would have killed him.

“16… you’re 16… you kids are 16…”

Alex watched cautiously as the man stood up and stopped Alex’s father from passing the room. The two men glared into each other eyes for a few seconds; but it seemed eternity to Alex; he didn’t know what he should expect from this.

He had prepared himself to everything: the shouting, the crying… the shame… But he had never thought silence would be the worst he could get from the parents. His father’s outburst earlier had reassured him in a way.

Dr. Stevens let out a nervous laugh. “They are 16…they are 16 and pregnant…. PREGNANT!”

What happened next went too fast for Alex to remember it clearly. He saw a fist going fast into his father face and heard his mother shout as Mrs. Stevens tried to calm her husband.

He heard Lily’s cried more and more as they tried to disentangle her from his embrace. He is ashamed to say it, but he didn’t fight. He was struck and helpless in front of the situation.

He watched the Stevens drove away from his house bringing his heart away from him. He barely recalled his mom bringing him back in the inside and his dad’s bloody face staring at him with more anger than he had ever seen in the eyes of someone.

**************
Later that night, Alex laid in his bed, his eyes fixed on the ceiling. The slight knock at his door caught his attention. He hadn’t dare going out for dinner, knowing anyone was ready to see him right now.

He sat on the side of his bed when he saw his mother entering the room and closed the door behind her.

She didn’t meet his eyes as she sat next to him, a bunch of paper in her hands. There was a silence until Alex cleared his throat.

She finally raised her head and her blood shot eyes meet his own torturous stare. He didn’t miss the point of disappointment in her voice even though she talked calmly.

“You remember what we told you when you turn 4 Alexander?”

He nodded, his head hanging low. “You told me that… that you weren’t my real parents. That you had adopted me when I was a baby… but that it didn’t matter ‘cause you loved me.”

“It still true Alexander. We did love you.” But it was said with so much bitter that it brought back to his tear once again; he couldn’t do anything to stop them from being ashamed of him when he was more ashamed of himself than he has been in his whole life.

“We never told you the whole story Alex… We knew a lot more but we wanted to wait until you’d be a little older… to give you a chance to know your origin.” His mother continued to talk and he listened carefully to her every word. He didn’t know where this discussion would lead but he was curious.

Mrs. Thomson took a deep breath looking back at her son.
“When we started to search for adoption, you dad was still unease with the idea; but when one of his friend, a lawyer from New York, told us that they had a child who needed a family quickly, we didn’t hesitate. It was the chance of our life and we took it… But we asked for the true; we wanted to know your story… they said it would be impossible to reveal the identity of the parents… your real parents, because they had asked to keep this information secret. But they told us that your father was 18, he had lost his girlfriend just a week before and had decided to give you up. He wanted you to have a better life that the one he would gave you… He was probably torn… as torn as you must be right now… but this night, he took the best decision of his life… because he loved you, and-.”

Alex cut her before she could finished. He stood up from the bed brutally, watching his mother suspiciously.

“What are you trying to tell me Mum?”

She stood up and put a hand on his arm. She could feel he was starting to panic and that wasn’t what she had foreseen.

“It’s okay sweetie. I just want you to think about the decision your real father took 15 years ago. He decided to gave you a chance to have a life… he had the same problem as you and he decided to take a decision for you, his child.”

Alex jerked his arm away from her grip as her words hit his brain. It was the last thing he had waited from his mother as a reaction.

“You… You want us to give up on our child?”

“I… No sweetie. I just want you to think of the possibility. And there is a few… Lily told her mother she was 3 months long; there isn’t much possibility left.”

“Lily doesn’t want an abortion! And I don’t want either! And we won’t give up our child! It’s out of the question!”

Mrs. Thomson felt helpless in front of her son’s outburst. She hadn’t been used to that, he was a quiet child. But today, he looked more like a man than like a kid.

“Please Alex, look at you. You’re 16 and barely able to take care of yourself. How can you take care of a child! Please Alex think about it.” She begged with all her motherly ability, but he was already out of the room.

Tonight, she had lost her only child as he was himself fighting not to lose his own…

Part 1

Lily-Anne Stevens lay on her bed that night, tears pooling on the side of her face. She was curled on a fetal position, trying to forget the day she had just had. But it seemed impossible.
In one night, she had lost her parents, and probably ruined their own couple; she could hear her father screaming as her mother cried. She didn’t bother to recall the words he was saying anymore; they had been the same since they had left the Thomson’s house: ‘how could I trust them! They are kids! Why did I trust them? Why?’

She let her mind drifted back to a time where everything was simple. When the Thomson had become their new neighbors tem years ago; when she had first met this shy and quiet black hair boy who live two blocks away from her house; when they were nothing more than just friends to each other but everyone knew they’d soon become more; when the both set of parents accept their first kiss with cheers and whistled two years ago… the hope of an eternal love.

But this precious time had ended a few months ago when thing had become a lot more serious than she had expected on her early age. Hormonal kids… was that all that they were? Hormonal kids?
She knew it wasn’t true. She loved Alexander Thomson with all her heart; and she had felt he loved her the same way more than once.

She knew he would be at her side right now if her parents hadn’t forbidden her to see him again…

A slight knock on her windows brought her back to the reality. She hadn’t even remarked that the screaming had stopped above in her parent’s room, replaced by light footsteps passing the floor.

She made her way to the window and met the eyes of her lover behind the glass. She hesitated an instant, but when she crossed his torturous stare, she opened the lock quickly and hurried him inside.

She wrapped her arms around his shoulder as soon as he was settled on his two feet, crying softly again his chest. His own strong arms came around her as he tried to sooth her shaking body.

“Shh, it’s okay… everything gonna be ok…”

“How? How can it be okay Alex? They want to keep us apart. They want me to give up the baby… I don’t want to Alex.”

“We won’t let them Lily, we won’t! It is our child and they can’t decided for us.”

She looked into his eyes, torn between believing the unbelievable, and telling him the reality of the facts..
“We’re too young Alex… I mean legally, they are the one who can make the decision for us; even if we don’t want them to.”

“I know that Lily. But we can get passed through the legality. We can eloped and-.”
“Elope! Alex are you hearing what you’re saying?” She whispered urgently. “It’s crazy!”

“It’s not that crazy! It’s our child’s life which is at stake Lily! Think about it!”
She felt his warm hand on the bump of her lower belly and immediately understood his point. She didn’t know if it was normal but she had felt the baby live inside of her since the beginning. She couldn’t think of losing this life and she would do anything to keep people from hurting it or brought it away from her.

“Okay.”

Alex stared at her with barely hide disbelief. Had she said Okay? “Wh-what did you say?”
“I said okay Alex. Let’s go away from here. I want my baby to be safe… I Need it to be safe!”

A smile plastered itself on his lips. He still didn’t know what was waiting for him and he didn’t want to think about it.

He threw a suitcase on Lily’s bed and put all the clothes she was giving him one by one. They didn’t need much, just the essential. When the suitcase was closed, Lily approached the door and opened the it as quietly as she could. She could still here the footsteps above and she didn’t want to catch the attention to them.

She turned back to Alex, whispering urgently. “You stay here, I’m coming back.”

Alex obeyed and a few minutes later, she came back holding an envelop in her hand.
“My dad always keeps some cash in his desk, just in case. It’s not much but it would cover for a few days.”

Alex just nodded his agreement. She had always been the thinker and apparently it wasn’t gonna change soon.

“We need to stop at my house; I need some stuffs.”

************
Alex moved swiftly in his room, trying to think of everything he would need, at least for the first few days. He had seen the light in his parents room when he had entered the house by the window, if he wasn’t quiet, his mother would remark that he was back, and will be in his room in no time.

When his backpack was full he started to turned back toward the window but the papers laying on his bed caught his attention. His mother had brought them when she had come in his room and he now knew what they were: his adoption paper.

Maybe that was his chance? He opened the first page of the paper, knowing instinctively exactly where to look. On the bottom of the paper was the name of the lawyer who had take care of his adoption before passing by his dad’s friend in New York. He read it: Phillip Evans, from the Evans’s associate law firm, Roswell, New Mexico.

He folded the papers back into their envelop and made his way quietly to the window. Lily hadn’t given a second sight, not even a second thought. She had trusted him and followed him once again. He would do the same.

He run to the car parked on the other side of the street and entered the driver seat. His eyes met Lily’s questioning glare.
“Where are we going now Alex?” She asked anxiously.

“Roswell, New Mexico.”

Part 2

3rd February 2017. 6 a.m. 2 miles from Pittsburgh.

Alex drove in silence as Lily sat at his side. He hadn’t said a word since they had crossed the New York’s line. And even before that he hadn’t been really talk active. She had been struck that he already knew where they were going; she hadn’t bothered asking him how. She would have gone everywhere for him, and if he wanted to go in Roswell, New Mexico, then she would follow him.

But still, she wondered what was so interesting in Roswell. Wasn’t it what they were calling ‘the little green men town’ or something? Why would he want to go there, when all they would find was fake aliens and restaurants on this theme?

But he had stayed silent at her questioning looks before, and she didn’t want to push him in anything he didn’t want to explain. She had trusted him before, she would trusted him again.

Lily was brought out of her thought when she felt the car slowed down. They had entered a little station on the side of the road and Alex was now rummaging on the front pocket of his coat searching for the last dollars.

“You want some cafe?”
She turned on her seat; first surprise to heard him talk after a so long silence. Then his question hit her and she grinned.
“Well, Mister Thomson, have you already forgotten why we are on the run?”
She patted the soft swell of her belly and was rewarded by a smile of his own.
“It’ll be milk for you then!”

By the time he came back to the car, Lily was already fast asleep in the front seat. It was understandable after all. They had spend the last 5 hours in the car and she hadn’t took any second to sleep. He didn’t felt the urge to sleep, his mind too much tortured right now to find slumber, so he climbed back in the car and go back on the road.

*************
3rd February 2017. 0.30 a.m. Seattle

Mickey Alexander Evans turned the locked of the front door of his house as quietly as possible. He knew what would be waiting for him in the morning if his parents learned he had come back so late…

He took off his shoes, intending to climb the stair that led him to his room on his tiptoes ; but the voice behind him froze him to the core and he stopped dead in his track.

“Not so fast young man!” Came the calm voice of his dad behind him. Calm but not less scary for the 13 years old Mickey was. He turned slowly to face his dad, but was rewarded by blackness. He squinted to adequate his eyes and made a few steps inside the room.

His dad was sitting on the couch, wearing only jeans, his feet were bare and he didn’t wear any shirt. His hands were joined between his knees while his elbows stayed on his laps.

“Where were you?”
His voice was still so calm and under control but Mickey could feel it won’t last long. He made the mistake to let the question unanswered and jumped when his dad repeat it a lot more louder than the first time.
“WHERE WERE YOU?”

This time it was Max who didn’t let him finished; he stood up and made his way toward his son.
“You worried you mother to death, I was ready to go search for you if you hadn’t arrived! For the last time: Where were you?”

“At John’s.”
Came the teary answer of his son. Max let out a nervous laugh. He had called John’s parent’s half an hour ago. His son’s best friend was soundly asleep in is room at the time.
“Why are you lying?”

“I’m not!”
“Yes you’re! So tell me where you were or you won’t need any curfew anymore until the age of 21!”

Mickey hesitated a moment, his mouth doing fishy motion as he search for an answer. He finally gave up when he saw that his dad wasn’t kidding.
“I was out… out on the street.”
“With who?”
He tempted a look toward his dad’s face but immediately lowered his eyes. It was the first time he had seen his dad so angry toward him. He was always so calm and under control.

“With Tom and Sarah.”
“The two punks?”
Mickey felt the anger grown inside him at this moment and a surge of power burned his palm. He wasn’t yet totally in control and it played him trick every once in a while when his emotions were running high.

“THEY ARE NOT PUNKS! THEY ARE MY FRIENDS!”
He hurled back to his father’s face. Max’s face stayed unmoving at his son’s outburst. He had learned to stay of ice when it came to Mickey. He had always been a quiet and respectful kid until a few months ago when he had met those other teens.

“You know I don’t like it when you wandered on the street alone! Something could happen to you and you know your mother would not support it!”

Mickey let out a sarcastic laugh, no longer afraid by his dad. His power gave him some assurance and he didn’t fear answering him anymore.
“I’m not a kid anymore! And I don’t know why something would happen to me! John’s parents let him go out at least!”

He made an attempt to turned back toward his room but Max’s firm grip restrained him to go.
“John’s parents are not Aliens chased by the FBI, nor by some tyrant from another planet! They don’t have to fear for their children anytime they go out alone on the street!… You’re the crown prince of a whole planet Mickey, don’t forget that you’ll be the first goal of our enemies!” He ended up calmer. He hadn’t meant to frightened his son, just made him understand the thread.

By the time Max’s ended his speech, any feeling of revolt was gone from Mickey’s deep brown eyes, replaced by frustration and despair. He tried to hold on tears as he face what his father had just said.

“I’d rather be a normal kid then… I wish I wasn’t your son… I wish you’d given me up when I was born! That way all this crap about being a crown prince wouldn’t exist!”

He brutally disentangled his arm from Max gripped and run to his room slamming the door behind him. Max stayed frozen and unmoving, struck by his son’s revelation… If only he knew.

His eyes felt on the form in the hallway. Liz. She had been standing there the whole time, he had felt her. And seemed as struck as him by her son sudden outburst.
“What’s happening to him Max?.. I don’t recognized him… where is my son?”

He made his way toward her, wrapping his arms around her fragile frame trying to sooth her sobs. But at the same time he couldn’t help contemplated what had brought his son to this harsh revelation. Had they been wrong?

Mickey was born 4 years after their departure from Roswell and they hadn’t really foreseen his arrival. But it had still been the greatest joy for Max as for Liz even if they were still on the run; Mickey was born on the old van between Duluth and the Canadian’s line. During the first 7 years of his life, they had continued to run from the FBI crossing the Mexican’s line or the Canadian’s line once in a while when the agents had spot them; working wherever they found jobs; trying to live a normal life when they had the chance to try; but it had never last more than a few months.

It had last until they discovered that Maria was pregnant at her turn. The had then decided it was time for them to stop running. They had plan a trick for the FBI knowing they hadn’t much time as an alien pregnancy last no more than 5 months.

Max, Michael and Kyle had been forced to killed three men this night, just to assured themselves a normal life for once. The months that followed had been the hardest to live for the three boys, until the birth of Maria and Michael’s little girl; they discovered then that they hadn’t do this sacrifice for nothing.

They were installed in Seattle for close to 6 years now and hadn’t had any other ‘surprise’ from the special unit. But they knew it wouldn’t last long, the unit wasn’t dead and neither does Khivar…

It hadn’t prevent them to have a almost quiet life. Liz had the little house she had always dreamed of in the suburb of Seattle, they had both a job in the local high school, Liz as a chemistry teacher and Max as an English teacher. Maria and Michael were owning a little restaurant and Isabel and Kyle rent a studio not so far from Maria and Michael’s.

And to crown it all, they had been blessed by the birth of a little girl 1 and half years ago. They couldn’t have ask for more. But fate had decided to claim them one more time when Mickey started to show powers a few months ago and his behavior had completely change from then.
He had gone from the quiet and shy child Max had been too while he was a child, to an agitated and revolted teen.

Liz had gave up a month ago to let him passed to crisis alone, even though it hurt her to see him struggle that way. But Max couldn’t give up to lose his son, even if it was for a while; he had already lost one and he wasn’t ready to lost another one…

************
Lily woke up in a start, startling Alex.
“What? What’s up? Are you okay Lily?”
He parked the car on the side of the road, turning on his seat to take Lily’s face between his two hands. She was still breathing hard and she crossed his worried glare.

“Are you ok Lily?”
But he was surprise to discovered fascination and not fear in her eyes. “I.. I think I’m okay… I think I saw your dad.”

Part 3a

“You what?”
Lily was still trying to regain a normal rate of breathing as she contemplated what had just happened. She had fallen asleep and then there had been this strange dream, where she had felt as if she had been in someone else body.

She had been moving and thinking but it wasn’t her who had been controlling neither her thought nor her moving; when she thought about it, it was more as if she had been seeing something through someone else eyes.

She tried to remember what she had seen but it was still so blurry in her mind. An empty bed… worry, she had been worried by something… a key turning in a lock… a dark hallway… relief at the sight of a young boy crossing the front door… and then a deep voice, worried voice… an argument… or a lecture… so blurry…

She hadn’t heard anything; just had seen the scene as an invisible spectator. But what had woken her up had been the face of the man in the room she had been standing in. Dark raven hair, deep amber eyes, tall and well-built; a feature that remind her so much of her own lover.

Yes, she was certain now, that the man standing before her in her dream had been her lover’s dad. She turned her head toward Alex, a smile adoring her face at the revelation she had just had.
“His name is Max… .”

**************
Alex sat on a chair facing the bed where Lily was sleeping peacefully. After her weird waking up in the car, he had decided it was time for them to get some sleep and they had stop on a motel on the side of the road.

But he couldn’t find slumber so he just sat there, watching his love breathing, sighting occasionally in her sleep. His eyes fell on the papers in his hand. He had grabbed them just before going and hadn’t had time to go through them while they were on the road.

He opened the files, wishing silently to find what hew as looking for. He didn’t even know what that was what he was searching, but he do hope for the best clue to find his dad. The file wasn’t big; barely three page, four if he count his birth certificate; his adoption had been fast due to his father relationships on the law government.

A letter from a lawyer settled in New Mexico to his colleague in New York. The letter was signed Phillip Evans, and he recognized the name from the firm which had taken charge of his adoption. But then a word caught his eyes under the Law firm’s name: Criminal Lawyers Firm.

How come a lawyer in criminality could have taken charge of his adoption? Was his dad a criminal? Or his mother? Had he himself been victim of a criminal and it had been the reason of his adoption? Thousand of questions run through his mind.

He took a look at his birth certificate. He had seen it several time already, but he had never thought of looking at it more attentively. Different handwritings filled the cases on the paper.
Several were of his dad, things like his birth date: it had been a question he had asked himself when he grown up: If he had already been closed to 9 months when his mother and father had adopted him, how come his birth date hadn’t been filled of his real birth date? The one that was on his birth certificate was only an approximate one chosen by his mother; he had turned 17 on October the 6th, but was he really 17?

Only one case had been filled by another handwriting: his name: Alexander Mickey. Why? He didn’t know. Had his dad called him this way for his first 9 months of life? Had he chosen this name just like that, or had it a signification for him?

His attention was caught back by Lilly lying on the bed. She had been turning and tossing in her sleep for some minutes now and as she was becoming agitated, he started to get worried. He approached the bed and sat carefully next to her body, not to jolt her.

************
Lilly could still feel the bed underneath her back and the light blanket covering her body. But at the same time she was in another world. It has nothing to do with a dream world, but more a space between reality and dream.

There were stars in a black sky above her head. Soft lawn underneath her feet. A fresh perfume of rose in the air. It looked like paradise. But this strange feeling to still be in her bed, was upsetting.

A form beside her caught her attention and she quickly turned her head. Not a feet from her stood a small woman, not taller than her, but quiet older though. Her long brown hair flown on her shoulder as wind blew. Her big brown eyes were looking at her with wonder.

“Who are you?” She asked in a small but still firm voice.
“I’m Lily.” She answered fearfully.
“Who are you?” The woman asked once again. “You reach for me but I don’t know why? If you don’t tell me who you are, I can’t help you.”
She continued urgently.

But Lily hadn’t time to answer. Both woman looked in amazement when Lily’s lower abdomen started glowing with a deep green light. She was startled by the sudden phenomena and was drown out of this strange world.
***********
Light came into view as she opened her eyes and she jolted in fear as she saw the body beside her. She gasped but Alex didn’t look at her. He was looking at something else on her body.
Then she felt it, his hand on her lower abdomen.

She followed his sight and watched as his hand laid flat on her belly, just above her womb. Green light was shinning from under his palm. She gasped louder this time and it startled Alex who jumped from the bed.

He brought his hand away from her belly as if it had suddenly burn his skin. She tried to crossed his eyes but he wasn’t looking at her. He was watching her abdomen with intense glares, where the green light had stopped the moment he had pushed away his had.

Part 3b

Alex stumbled backward, his eyes glued to Lily’s abdomen that had been lightened by green light just a minute ago. His eyes fell to his hand and he watched it in fear suddenly realizing that it had been his own hand which had done that to Lily.

His back encountered the hard wall covered with a pale green wallpaper. He gasped in a sharp intake of breath. Was he becoming crazy? Maybe he needed some sleep. He hadn’t closed his eyes during the last two days. Yeah, it was probably that.

But then he saw Lily’s eyes glued on her abdomen too. She was caressing her blouse covered belly while gazing at it in awe. Why wasn’t she afraid like him? If she had seen that green light too, she should be as afraid as him. Why was she so calm?

“Wha-..What was that?” Alex tried to gulped some air past the lump in his throat. But he was feeling like choking, closed up between those four walls which seemed closer and closer with every passing minutes.

Lily’s head shot toward Alex when she heard his shaking voice. She wasn’t prepared for what she encountered: wide eyes, pale skin. He looked like he was going to faint.
She quickly stood up and made his way toward him just fast enough to catch him before he fell to the floor.

Alex felt her hand on his face, he heard her soothing words trying to calm his raging breathing rate. But his eyes opened again and then he realized once again what was happening and back away from her outstretching his hand to keep her at arm length.

“Alex! Alex what are you doing? What’s happening to you?”

He stopped suddenly in his track when he heard her voice full of worry. What was he doing? Lily was his love, she was carrying his child. Why was baking away from her now? But this green light. What had it been?

He saw tears starting to form in her eyes as he continued to stay as far away from her as he could. Her pleading words were softening his heart and he couldn’t take it anymore.
He walked back to her and wrapped her small frame in his arms.

“Shh, please Lily, please, don’t cry. Please.”
“Alex… please, don’t do that again… you scare me. Please.”

They both talked at the same time barely hearing the plead of the other too absorbed in their own worries.

**************
Liz woke up with a start, feeling the warm sweat pooling at the side of her brow as she tried to calm her raging breath. Her hands plastered again her chest as she tried to calm down. What was that?

Max went out of the bathroom when he heard Liz shouting in her sleep. He was brushing his teeth when he heard her and came back running in the room to knelt at her side of the bed.
“Liz! What’s happening? Did you had a dream?”

“She needs me, she needs me but I can’t help her. The baby, she is pregnant, but… Max…”
“What Liz? What did you see? I’m here, I’m listening.”
He brushed her sweat covered hair away from her forehead folding his hand in each side of her head. He knew that when she got dreams, she had difficulty coming out of her daze and he had to forced her out or she’d wear herself out.

“Liz, come back, honey. Come back.”

Finally, she met his eyes and he could see she was finally completely conscious. Relieve spread over him and he kissed her forehead slightly. He didn’t like when she got dreams, because every time there was a risk that she’d not come back. She had stayed several hours barely conscious last time and didn’t want this scenery to repeat.

“I saw this girl Max. She-.. she was pregnant… She would not tell me who she was. I… I try to ask her but, then… then there was the green light and… I think she got scared…”

“Did she tell you her name?”
“Lily! Her name is Lily.”

****************
Max held little Mary-Beth in his arms, trying to calm her cries of hunger and prepared some breakfast at the same time. How come Liz could do that every morning. Most of the time, when she woke up and prepared breakfast, he was already gone. She started her first class at 10 while he started at 8.30 every morning; that way she had the time to sleep some more, clean the house and drop Beth at daycare.

But today, he had insisted that she stayed at home and try to regain some strength after the dream. It had wore her out one more time as he had predicted and he was afraid she would sleep a good part of the day.

So he had promised to take care of dropping Beth at the daycare himself and prepared to breakfast. He had even said he would clean up the living a little bit, but finally it would have to wait until tonight.

“Mickey! Hurry up boy! We’re gonna be late!”
Max shouted from the lower step of the stair. He hadn’t seen his son since yesterday night, when he had refused to have dinner after having not been allowed to go out. The young ten had slammed his door and they had heard loud music until late in the evening.

Max bounced the little girl in his arms, holding a cup of cafe in one hand and a cold bottle sandwiched between her bottom and his other hand. She was still crying in his ears and he didn’t hear the doorbell rang at first.

He came back to the stair on his way and shout one more time when there was no sight of his son coming down.
“Mickey! What are doing up there! It’s time.”

He stuck the cold bottle in his daughter’s mouth stopping her hungry cries almost instantly. Then he turned to the door and opened it swiftly. It wasn’t really the moment, he was gonna be late and he still had to drop Beth at daycare. So it was a frustrated Max that opened the door.

But the sight before him froze him in place. Mickey that he has been calling desperately since the last 5 minutes, was standing before him framed by two policeman. The young boy’s head hang low and he never met his father shook eyes.

“Mister Evans?”
The voice of the policeman shook him out of his daze and he started at the older man before him.

“Yeah, yeah, it’s me… Wha-… what happened?” The stunned father asked in barely hide disbelief.

“Your son was found with two of his friends degrading a wench on the Park of the Falls on the other side of the town. And an old woman said having seen him and his friends thrown eggs on her front door earlier in the night. We’ve been trying to reach you this morning but it wasn’t answering. We wouldn’t let the boy come back alone so we brought him back and make sure he had a correction for what he did.”

The policeman didn’t insist as he realized that the young father was actually quiet shocked by his son attitude. It had shocked himself to see a so young and innocent looking boy doing such kind of things. It had obviously been the two punks that were accompanying him who had pushed him to act that way.

“Sure! Don’t worry he would have a punition for what he did.”
“Ok then we let you cope with this. Have good day mister Evans.” He turned to Mickey tilting his chin to forced the teen to look at him. “And you young boy, I don’t want to see you again in the middle of the night wandering with those two punks! Clear?”

Mickey shamefully nodded his head.

Alex looked deep into Lily’s eyes, tilting her chin to force her to look at him. “Did you hear me Lily? I don’t want you to do that again.” He spoke softly and she could hear fear and anxiousness in his voice.

Lily didn’t meet his eyes.
“I just… I couldn’t help it Alex. After the dream I’ve had on the car I was so shocked… and then, when I went back to sleep there was this… this ‘pull’… and it was so strong!… It’s like I couldn’t resist the… I don’t know how to call it… this connection. Yes, that’s it: it was like a connection… and then there was this woman and it was so peaceful. She said she wanted to help us. But then it fade away so quickly… What if it has something to do with you being able to catch on other’s emotions. You remember what you told me when we first start dating, you said you had discovered that when you were a child and that you had felt my love for you.”

She look back at him trying to catch his feeling, but this time it was his turn to avoid her gaze.
“I don’t think so Lily. I was speaking metaphorically when I said that.”

Lily shook her head. She couldn’t believe that. She had always felt that Alex was special, he had just never accepted it. It had afraid her at first. She knew the special bond they share wasn’t something normal. But now that she was pregnant with his child, it was like the baby was reassuring her it’s own way.

“But where did this light come from then Alex? And who was this woman?”
“I… I’ve no idea Lily. I just think we are both… really tired and that we need to get some sleep. I just want you to stay away from that… that ‘pull’ as you call it…. Please, Lily, can you do that?”

He took her face between both his hands and started brushing her cheeks with his thumbs, wiping the tears that were silently falling. She didn’t want to loose this feeling; she wanted to feel this peacefulness again. And she wasn’t alone, the baby wanted that too, it was like begging her.
“I don’t think I can do that Alex… it’s just… it’s just so strong.” She tried to argue.

But it was Alex time to cry. He just couldn’t hold his tears as anger built in his body… no not anger, it was more like… frustration. Frustration of not being able to know what was wrong with Lily… with him. He just couldn’t let her take that risk. He knew he was different. And it scared him to death.

“Shh. Alex. It’s ok.” Lily wrapped her arms around her devastated boyfriend. Trying to calm the frantic movements he was doing to escape her warm embrace. Finally he let go and end up sobbing, his head curled in her chest. All the pressure of the last two days fading away as she hold him against her bosom.

“I’m so scared Lily… what if… what if something happen to you?… what if something happen to our baby?…”

“Nothing will happen Alex. Nothing. I promise.”
He finally held up his head, his fearful eyes meeting her own.

When she saw his torture stare, she decided his worried might be understandable. Maybe he was right after all. He had never been the worrying kind, and seeing him so scared was something she wasn’t use to.
“I won’t do it again Alex. I’ll resist. If it’s what you want, if you think it’s too dangerous, then I won’t do it again.”

A weak smile made his way on his lips, as he accepted the feeling of relief that overwhelmed him. Or was it fear? His mind was so confuse at the moment, and all he could think of now was that Lily had accept his request, and that he didn’t have to think about that anymore.

“I think maybe we could stay here for the night… what do you think?”
Lily smiled back at him, knowing well what he had in mind.

As she laid on his side this night, his arms around her, hearing his calm breath; she realized that she had been right to stop the pull before it was too late. He had proved her one more time tonight, that he was all she needed.

Part 4B

February, 2nd 2017. 9.40 AM, high school of ‘Seattle suburb’

Mickey walked in the still empty high school as students were still attending there first class. The bell would ring in five minutes and he decided it was no need to hurry. He knew he shouldn’t do that, skipping class like he had done during the last month, but what was a few class in one years? He didn’t like math anyway.

He had already been convoked at the principal several times during the last month, having receive several detentions that he explains as being a new job to his parents.
Soon the principal would call his parents, and the three of them would sit in front of his desk and they would discuss his future.

But he didn’t mind being caught anymore. He didn’t mind having to confront his dad anymore. It had happened so much lately, that he even suspected his dad was slowly giving up on him. The punitions were like new challenges to him: he and his new friends would find a way to escape it anyway.

“Excuse me.”
A voice behind him caught his attention and he turned around slowly. He found himself face to face with a blond shy girl. She was nervously tucking on her lower lips and the sight of her made Mickey smiled.

Her shining blue eyes were holding some kind of innocence, and he couldn’t help but felt lost into them. “Hey. You… you are the new student, aren’t you?”

Her blond curl bounced as she nodded shyly. “Y...yes. It’s me… I… I can’t find my class, would you mind helping me?”

“Sure. I’m Mickey. Whatya name?”
She smiled back at him and shook the hand he was outstretching to her. “hum.. Carry. Thank you… for helping me, Mickey… I admit I’m a lil lost. It’s kinda big here.”
She laughed nervously, but Mickey couldn’t help but think it sound just like a soft melody to his ears.

“You think it’s big? Well you haven’t see our mall I guess.” She laughed once more, finding this boy really nice for someone of the town. She had expected to find herself alone in this big high school and had been scared to be alone for the whole year, but she was starting to think that maybe there was nice people even in big towns.

Mickey looked around him, and remarked that students were now all walking in the hallway all around them. He hadn’t even heard the bell ring. He turned back to her.
“You didn’t tell me what was your next class.”

Carry felt herself blushing under his gaze. Why was she acting so shy? She had never been that way before, she was an outgoing. But around him, she was acting like a stupid geek.
“aw… hum sorry, hu..”

She checked her schedule. “Hum… my second class is English with Mr. Evans.”
Mickey gulped when he heard her say the name of her English. They had at least 3 English teachers in their grade, why did she had to be in his dad’s class?… anyway, he had promised her he’ll bring her to her class and he would do that.

“Ok. I’m not in this class but it’s near my second class so it’s ok.”
“Didn’t you had a first period?”

He felt himself blushing. Why was he feeling at having skipping classes suddenly? Maybe because she was looking so innocent… maybe because he liked that.
“…er… I… I was running late this morning. Let’s go to your class. Ok.”
His eyes fall on her schedule that she was still holding in her hands. He needed to find another subject of conversation.
“Hey you’re in Mrs. Cletton’s class in third period! I’m too! Maybe we could go together. And after the class I could show you around what do you think?”

Carry felt herself grinning at his words. Maybe she had been wrong after all, the people in town were kind and nice just like in the country.

They arrived two minutes before the bell rang and students were starting to sit at their desk. Mickey hold the door open for Carry and she was surprised to see that he was following her into the class.

“I thought it wasn’t your class?”
He just gave her a genuine smile and turned back toward the teacher. She was even more surprised when he took her hand and led her in front of the teacher’s desk.

Mr. Evans’s head was down, looking at some copies on his desk. “hey dad!”
His head shot facing the class as he heard the voice of his son calling him. What was it with Mickey? He usually never came in his class… well he hadn’t since the year had began.
He was surprised to see the genuine smile on his face as he approached him.

Saying that Carry was stunned was an understatement. So Mickey was Mr. Evans’s son. And effectively she was able to see how they look like each other when Mr. Evans raised his head. Gosh he was good looking!

He was closed to 35 she thought, black hairs just like Mickey, though his eyes were amber while Mickey’s were deep brown. She couldn’t help but remarked that both had the same cute little ears.

She didn’t miss the surprised look in her new teacher eyes, but it quickly faded as he turned toward his son.
“Hey Mickey. What are you doing here?”

“Dad, Carry is the new student. She is in your class. I thought I could show her around after school what do you think?”

Max eyed his son suspiciously. It wasn’t in Mickey habits to ask him for permission. Was it a new tactic? But the smile on his son’s face was unmistakable. It was the first genuine smile he had seen on his son face for months.

“Well. I don’t see any problem in that, as long as you’re back at home in time for dinner.”
Mickey couldn’t help the grin that took form on his lips. “Don’t worry I’ll be there.”

He then turned back to his new friend. “I’ll be waiting for you outside Carry, I’ll show you Mrs. Cletton’s class.”
He was lost in her bottomless blue eyes for a moment, but his dad’s voice brought him back to the reality.

“Mickey, better hurry, you’re gonna be late to your next class…. Here Carry why don’t you sit next to Chloe? Ok, people let’s start…”

February, 2nd. 2017. 9 PM. Roswell, New Mexico.

Alex looked outside the window of the driver seat. It was it, they had finally arrived in Roswell New Mexico where, he hoped, was their clue for a better life. If only he could find his real dad. Maybe he’ll be able to help them. It was his only hope and he was clutching on it for dear life.

It was already dark outside, as rain fall with force. He wondered if that kind of storm was current here. It was the desert after all, though the rain falling that way remind him of the storm they had experienced a few years ago in New York. But it was the desert here, it was probably rare that it’s rain that way.

Behind the curtain of rain, he could see the house where all his hopes where held. The light of what he guessed was the living room, was on, and he could see movements in the kitchen too. Maybe it was a little late to come at people place, but they hadn’t made this whole travel to stop just at the front door. No, he had decided he would meet this lawyer Mr. Evans, as soon as he was in town.

You may think it took them sometimes to come there… One month actually. They had actually realized after sometimes on the road, that their parents had called the police and that their face where plastered in every police station of the country… or at least, the most part of it. So they had decided to just sleep the day and drive at night. Hiding in a motel for a few days when they thought they had been seen and going back on the road when it seemed clear.

It had been a exhausting month for him, but even more for Lily. She had started her 5th month, and she looked 8 months pregnant. He didn’t know if it was normal, and he couldn’t help worrying. She was weaker everyday, she didn’t eat well, and her skin was turning paler every morning.

He turned toward her, as she sat in the seat next to him. She was wearing one of his shirt, and a string pants as anything seemed to fit her anymore. But she was more beautiful on his eyes everyday.

He extended his hand toward her face and stroke her cheek tenderly. “hey sweetheart, we’re here.”
She opened her eyes oh so slowly and look into his deep amber eyes. She smiled weakly at his grinning face. “Then what are we waiting for? Let’s meet this Mr. Evans.”

She hadn’t remarked it was raining and was startled when light explode in the black sky. “When did it start raining?” She asked weakly.

“A few hours ago…. I hope it’ll stop soon. If they give us information about where my dad is staying, I’d like to be on the road tonight.”

*****************
Diane Evans whistled softly as she prepared the dinner for her husband, rummaging through several cupboard to find some conserve tomato. She frowned when she realized there wasn’t any left.

He had phoned 10 minutes ago saying he’d be back in half an hour, but that he’d appreciate some good dinner even that late. She was determinate to do this good dinner he had apparently been waiting for all day, and she decided it was worst it to go out and search for some more conserve tomato.

‘Maybe the little shop across the railroad will be open?’ She thought.
She grabbed her vest and umbrella, slide some cash on her bag and made her way to the front door.

The moment she opened the door, she cried out in fear. Two people were standing before her and she had been startled by her presence. When her heart calm down a little bit she looked up to see that they were two young teenagers and that they were both wet to the core.

“Oh gosh! You kids startled me!… But god, you’re all wet, C’mon c’mon in. Don’t stay out there you must be freezing.”

The two teens obeyed without protestations. It was cold outside, and Diane could see that their teeth were chattering and that both kids were shivering.

“Oh my god. Look at you. Where are your parents? Should I call them? Where are you living? Are you lost? Where is your car?”

Questions where flying from her mouth as she urged them to quit off their damp clothes. But she stopped dead in her track as she saw the two teens standing before her: The boy was holding what seemed to be his girlfriend, His arms circling her to the waist… her way too large waist..
‘Oh my god!’

Diane brought a hand to her mouth to stop the gasp from exiting her mouth. They both look so young, barely 17… and the girl… yes she was sure now… the girl was definitely very pregnant.

After a long silence, Alex decided it was his turn to talk. “Mrs. Evans, we’re really sorry to bother you so late, but-.”

Diane hushed him before he could go farther. “Shh it’s ok. You don’t have to explain right now. You two are going to take a shower and get some change of close. You’re lucky that still have some of my children clothes.”

Diane was back on mother mode, and hurried them in the hallway that led to Max’s old room. She opened the dressing and started rummaging through the different clothes. “I think my son was a little taller than you but you seem to be built the same way. I think this will fit you.”

She handed Alex dry jeans, a blue shirt, and a pair of boxers and pointed to a door on the side of the room. “Here is the bathroom, you take a shower while I take care of your girlfriend.”

He gave her an unconvinced stare, but she pushed him in the room and he had no choice but to accept the offer.
He was barely in the bathroom when he heard Diane talking to Lily. “Here, come with me sweetie. I think I have some dry clothes for you too. Gosh look at you, you’re trembling.”

************
Alex went out of the bathroom fifteen minutes later. He didn’t want to be away from Lily too long, but it had been so long since he had taken a good warm shower, that he had been able to shave, and put on dry and clean clothes. It was kinda out of fashion, but it was classic.

He entered the living room feeling awkward. His eyes fell on Lily, sitting on the couch. She was freshly showered too, and was wearing a tight red shirt and black strings pants. Her hair were still damp from the shower, and he couldn’t help but think she had never looked so beautiful.

His thought were cut short when he saw Mrs. Evans enter the room from the corner of his eyes. She was holding a tray of tea and cookies in her hand, and came to sit next to Lily. She turned to him when she saw he wasn’t moving.
“C’mon sweetie. You must be starving.” She patted the seat beside her, inviting him to come and sit next to his girlfriend.

“Mrs. Evans. I… Thank you… I…”
“How do you know my name?” Diane asked suddenly. She had thought their were elope kids, nothing more.. even though it was already a big deal. But apparently they knew here, and hadn’t stopped at her house by pure coincidence.

“We have been searching for you… I mean, I’ve been searching for you… You’re Mrs. Evans right? Mr. Phillip Evans’s wife?”
“It’s me.” Diane was more and more confused. Why were those kids searching for Phillip in the first place?

“Well you see Mrs. Evans, I’ve been adopted when I was a kid, and I’ve been trying to find my biologic parents for the last few month. I found out it was your husband who took care in my adoption in 2002. He is the first clue I’ve ever found and I wished he could help me.”

For the second time tonight, a gasp escaped Diane’s mouth. ‘adoption… 2002… your husband…’ Phillip have taken care of only one adoption in his whole career. He was a criminal lawyer and it wasn’t his job first hand. But this adoption wasn’t like any other adoption. It was her grandson adoption.

She raised her head toward the young teen standing before her, and she finally remarked what was obvious: the amber eyes, the black jay hair, the high cheekbones… gosh, even the ears were the same!… She was currently facing her grandson!

Phillip took this time to make his appearance: “Honey! I’m home!”

Part 5

Phillip entered his house a smile plastered on his face. It had been a long day, and he was relief to finally be home with his wife.
His smile faded a little when he saw that his living room was full. Two young teens were standing in the middle of the room facing Diane who sat on the recliner.

“Well I didn’t know we had guests tonight. Diane?”
He turned to his wife and was surprised to see a look of pure shock on her face. She was becoming paler and paler every minute. “Diane? What is it? Are you ok?”

“I… I…” She couldn’t stop looking at the young man in front of her. How had she been so blind? How had he found her? Was he really her grandson? So many questions and she couldn’t find the voice to ask them.

She felt Phillip sat beside her as her eyes were still glued to Alex. “Oh my god…” He heard her whispered. “Diane. You must tell me what’s wrong honey. Please.”

She didn’t answer him; instead she just turned back toward the boy still standing in the middle of the room. “Who… who are you?”

Alex was stunned by her question; he couldn’t understand why she was so surprise when she had told him about the adoption. Though, he felt his total honesty was needed here. He would do anything if it meant she would help him find his dad.

“I’m Alexander Thomson and this is Lily Stevens… I’ve been adopted by my parents when I was a baby and all I know is that Mr. Evans was the lawyer in charge of my adoption and that everything started here, in Roswell New Mexico…are you Mr. Evans?” He asked his question to the older man that had just entered the house and had sat next to Mrs. Evans.

Phillip didn’t answer the question that was directed to him. He just looked back at Alex, not even hiding his surprise. He could understand now why Diane had been so upset when he arrived. Once the shock was passed, he finally managed to croak out. “Do… Do you have any idea of who you are… of who I am?”

Alex was a little taken aback by the question. He hadn’t wait for this kind of reaction from the lawyer that had taken care of his case. He had just wished he would help him find his dad.

“Well, Mr. Evans… I don’t really know what you mean by who I am… but I can tell you what I know…” he gulped some air in his lungs. “I… I know that my dad was 18 when he gave me up, and I do understand that it must have been hard for him as my… as my mum had just died… I know he gave me the name of Alexander Mickey… and I guess I was from New Mexico… that’s all I know about my origins… about you: well I know that you were the lawyer who took care of my adoption case back in 2002.”

Phillip watched in amazement as Alex talked to him… it may sound stupid, but the last time he had seen his grandson, he had been a baby; and now, here he was flesh and bones, a well built young man of 17 years old… who had apparently put his girlfriend in a bad situation. But it wasn’t time to think about that… he’ll deal with this ‘formality’ later.

He could recognize the determination look in his eyes; he had seen it so many times before that. He hadn’t good memories of this Tess girl, but he could swear this young man had taken more from his dad than from his mother.

He hadn’t much time to try to know him right now. This young man was asking him a request and he had that to keep in mind. His shoulders slumped as he realized it would be a tough work. Alex needed to know the truth; he had to know who he was; even more now that he and his girlfriend were expecting. ‘God Help me!’ he thought in despair.

“I… I’m sorry Alex, I don’t think I can help you find your dad… for the simple reason that the last time I saw him was a few weeks after your adoption…”

He saw the young boy’s shoulder sacked in defeat and it broke his heart. “But I can tell you who you are… I can tell you your origins… I can help you find out what you are…”

***********
Max watched through the window of the living room as the Guerin girl pulled in the driveway and one really exited little girl went out of the car.

Eli was a real spitfire and the spit image of her mother: Blond soft hair framing a pale visage and sparkling green eyes. She was barely 7 years old and knew what to do to make people do what she wanted them to do. She had Michael wrapped around her little finger and Max had to admit he wasn’t far behind.

Max remembered the arrival of Eli in the world; it had been one of the joyous moments of the little family’s life. For the first time, they had been able to settle in a place. For the first time they had been able to say that they were safe. Though during all the pregnancy, the three boys had felt the weight of having killed three other agents to have this freedom.
And when Eli was born, it had been like a rush of oxygen. Eventually, they had understood that they had done that for something. The guilt had slowly faded when they had looked the children grown…

But even though it had been of the joyous moment of all of them, it was nothing compared to the joy and proud he had felt the night Mickey was born…

April, 15th.2004. Duluth. 3.25 PM

Max went out of the little shop as the rain start to fall. His arms were full of bags and he hurried to the old van where Liz was waiting for him. It would be one of the last rides in this van. At this very moment, Maria, Isabel and Kyle were 50 miles away searching two new cars for them to drive in Duluth.

They had finally decided to settle for good two months ago when Liz had discovered she was pregnant. They have opted for Duluth one month ago, because it was big enough to hide with a baby, and still close enough from the Canadian line.

The agents hadn’t bothered them for over two months now, and they had all found a job, which allowed them to buy new cars. Soon, him and Liz would have their own place and car. Finally, they’d be what they had dreamed to be for years: a family.

He entered the driver seat in a hurry, smiling at his very pregnant wife sitting on the passenger seat. Even though she was only 4 and half long, she already looked as if she was due anytime. They had concluded that alien pregnancy was shorter than human’s one, and Liz had stopped working a couple of weeks ago, not knowing when their little one would show it’s pretty face.

“Did you take vanilla ice cream?”
He turned shocked eyes toward his wife. “Didn’t I buy a full box yesterday?”
She gave him an innocent look. “I finished it last night. I couldn’t sleep.”
Liz hadn’t had a lot of craving since the beginning of her pregnancy, but vanilla ice cream with a lot of Tabasco sauce had been one.

Max sighted in frustration, throwing his head over the wheel as if the world had ended just because he had forgot vanilla flavor ice cream. “Ooooook…”
He gave his wife a kiss on the cheek. “I’ll be right back.”

He exited the van and Liz watched him run toward the shop once again. To her surprise he was out only a few second later… hand empty. She frowned and sighted; they were probably out of ice cream. Anyway, she’d find a way to convince Max to stop at the mall.

Max reentered the van, an anxious look on his face. The car was on the road in no time and he handed his cell phone to Liz.
“Call Michael. Tell him to pack everything he can from our stuff at the apartment and tell him to be at the corner of main street.”

“Max what’s happening.”
He took a look at his suddenly nervous wife. How could this happen right now. They had finally settled in a place and now they were back on the road. But he hadn’t the time to complain about his lost of dream.

“I saw an agent in the shop. He was following me. I’m not sure if he saw me going out, but he won’t be long to remark that I’m not here anymore.”

He saw the shock on Liz’s feature, and he couldn’t stop the phone from falling from her hands. After all, it was also her dream, and she was even more affect that she was pregnant.

“Please Liz… I know it’s not what you want, and believe me it’s not what I want either but we don’t have any choice. You need to call Michael now, or it’ll be too late.”

15 minutes later, Michael was sitting in the backseat of the van barely able to catch his breath. He had barely been able to pack a few things when agents had showed up at their place.

“I saw them Max, they are right behind us! You need to hurry!”

He spotted Liz sitting next to Max, and the shock look on her face couldn’t be miss. Since the moment she had announced she was pregnant, he couldn’t help but felt concern for her. Now, he was even more. What were they supposed to do? They were obviously back on the road, and they didn’t know for how long. Two months had been the longest they had been in a town, and it was Duluth.

After two hours of being on the road Max realised he had finally got ride of the agents. ‘Not for long’ he thought. They had managed to reach the three other member of the group and learned that they had been followed by agents all morning and had finally got ride of them a few hours ago while reaching the Canadian line. Then, it’d mean there would be other agents waiting for them at the Line too.

They were still at a 20 miles from the line when Max noticed the silence in the car. Michael was turned toward the back window, watching for any sign of agent’s cars, and Liz was sitting quietly beside him… too quietly.

Even though she had tried to hide it, he had felt the moment she had started to cry softly beside him the moment the shock had passed. But now, the crying had stopped, and had been replaced by a calmness he was not used to. He couldn’t see her face as she was looking outside the window, but her hand clutching the edge of the seat caught his attention. Her knuckles were white and he wondered what was happening with her.

His eyes were back on the road but his hand came to brush hers, trying too easiest her grip on the seat. But she wouldn’t let go, and this time, he heard a distinct whimper escaping her lips. He turned back to her, suddenly worried. “Liz? Everything’s ok?”

He was cut by Michael outburst. “Maxwell they are here! Faster!”

Max was startled and let go of Liz’s hand, not remarking her wincing. In no time, another car came into view. “It’s another agent’s car. Max we have to go outta here! Now!”

Max turned on the first road, while Michael sent a burst of light behind the car, hiding their attempt to escape from the other agents. The road is getting hardest to drive on, but Max kept driving as fast as he could, until he heard the now obvious gasp beside him.

He managed a look at his side, and his eyes fixed themselves on the growing dampness on Liz’s pant. “Liz?”
She gave him a teary look, while rubbing her painful stomach. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry Max.”

“Liz?…” Max is confused, what was exactly happening. “Liz… did-.”
“My water broke.”

“WHAT?” Coming from Michael. He had finally stopped looking outside, and was now fully focus on what was happening on the front seat. He spotted the darkness on Liz's lap and gasped in disgust.

“It can’t happen now Liz! You know that! They are still following us!”
“Michael I-.”
She didn’t have to answer as another contraction ripped her tiny body. “Gosh! It hurts!”

Max panicked as he saw Liz in pain and let go off the wheel for a second, trying to cope both with the road and his wife clutching his hand at his side. “Liiiiiiz! You’re hurting me!… Michael, how much before we reach the Canadian line?”

Michael took a look at the map on his laps. “From what I see here, we’ve turned 30 miles before the line, we must have made already a good 10 miles to east, it made us 35 miles from the line if we took the next road on the north… with this rain, we won’t be there before 1 hour, ‘coz I’m not even sure that the road is over; the map is too old, it doesn’t say.”

Both boys heard the gasp coming from Liz’s mouth. “Max! The baby is coming!”
“What? Wasn’t it supposed to last at least 10 hours? Isn’t what they say for the first child!”

It’s an angry Liz who turned toward Max. “May I remind you, mister ‘I know everything’, that this baby is an alien! And it’s your baby, if it wants to see its daddy, IT WILL!”

10 minutes later, Max was running out of the van to his wife side. The rain was falling hard and by the time Liz is installed on the back of the van, both were drench wet. Michael was now on the driver seat and was back on the old road in no time. On the backseat, Max wrapped his arms around Liz, rubbing the bulge of her stomach trying to ease the pain as much as he can; but Liz’s cry are intensifying. “Max, the baby is coming, you need to help me!”

“Tell me baby. Whatever I’ve to do, I’ll do it. Just tell me.”
“First of all…(grunting)… get those big hands off of me! I don’t want you to touch me! EVER!”

Ten minutes later, Liz is lying on her back, Max on the other side of her, trying not to faint. He had never seen so much blood in his life. “Liz, are sure it’s normal. I mean…”
“Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaax!… I… I think, you have to help it to go out… with… with your power… I…please Max! Do it now!”

Max didn’t wait another second as he heard Liz cried once more in pain. One of his hands went on her bulge, while he slide the other between her legs, trying not to wince. The soft glow appeared and he heard Liz panting and breathing hard.

Michael hasn’t turned his head from the road, since he had switched place with Max. Though, only hearing Liz crying and gasping, made him imagined what it must be like. He just refused to turn his head. He turned the radio on, trying to cover the sound of Liz’s crying.

But it didn’t seem to work so well, and even less, when another cry came to complete Liz’s. But it’s a different cry. Softer yet stronger. Liz’s gasps are suddenly replaced by sobs. He couldn’t help but turning his head and watched as the newest member of their group made its apparition to the world.

He met Max’s awe gaze, and almost lost control of the car at the sight before him. “It’s a boy…”
Michael looked back at the road before him, and saw the sign that he is crossing. “Welcome in Canada little man.”

*********
“Max, it’s so nice of you to accept to look after Eli… Michael is replacing the cook tonight and with two waitresses sick, I can’t watch over her all at the same time.

“Hey it’s ok! You know Liz and I love having her here! Her and Mary Beth are cool playing together and it gives Liz and I sometimes together.”

“Well, Max, then if you enjoy it so much, maybe I should bring her here more often?…”
“Nah… I’m not sure Michael will appreciate that too much, he already told me he likes having his two girls at home.”

Maria laughed; she hadn’t seen Max made joke and laughed lately, with Mickey acting like a rebel teenager, and Liz having dizziness every once and while, his life had suddenly became exhausting.

“How is Liz? Feeling any dizziness lately?… Max have you thought that maybe she was-…”
He cut her before she could go farther on her theory. “Pregnant? No, we have been really careful ever since Mary-Beth was born. We can’t afford another baby right now and it’s physically impossible that Liz was pregnant right now… No, I know something wrong with her but I can’t find out what… It must have something to do with those dreams she had had last month.”

Maria contemplated what he had said for a moment. Liz hadn’t told her much about those dream, but she had felt it had bother her not having find out who it was from.
“You must be right… well keep us inform. I don’t want anything bad to happen to Liz… and you guys should remember that we are here to help you. How are things doing with Mickey by the way?”

Max couldn’t help chuckling slightly; Mickey had been the subject of conversation of the whole family for over 2 months now, his son would probably not appreciate it much if he knew.

“Well it’s hard to say. The principal told me this morning he had started skip a few class, and he keeps wandering with those… punk kids… Liz doesn’t how to act with him anymore. He’s taller than her now, and she is scared of how he might react you know… He comes in my class this morning, he was different though I don’t know how.”

“Hey Max, you know maybe you should send him to us. Michael and I are gonna show him how life is really. There is plenty of job at the house: babysitting, laundry, and even some serving at the cafe if he is up to it!”

Max chuckled at Maria, trying to imagine his son with an apron and some blue paper hat on his head. Nah, was really not for him. “I don’t want him to become a good ‘mother at home’ Maria, I just wish he could review his behavior a little bit. I feel that something is bothering him, but neither Liz or I can find out what it is.”

“Yeah… right… well keep us inform ok! I’ll come and picked Eli tomorrow at 12. See you then.”

He watched Maria pulled out from the driveway and closed the door behind him, getting ready to face two really excited little girl.

*************
Alex frowned at his words. “What do you mean WHAT I am?”

Phillip looked at his wife, seeing the support in her eyes, he then turned back toward his grandson trying to find a way to explain him that he was actually an alien, or more specifically, an hybrid, that he was actually born in another planet called Antar, and that his biologic father had been away from Roswell for close to 17 years because he had to flee from the FBI.

“Alex, have you ever noticed… some special… things… that happened to you… or things you can do that are… special?”

Alex gave him a confused look. Where was he going? When Phillip saw that Alex wouldn’t answer his question so easily. He just stood up, went to a closet on the corner of the room, open it and came back to the couch holding what looked like a photo album in his hands.

He sat back next to his wife, looking at her one more time before facing his grandson once again. He was now holding his girlfriend’s hand, and his motion mimicked Max’s when he was with Liz. It was obvious that this boy loved his girlfriend as much as Max loved Liz.

He opened the album and Alex tried to see what he was searching for. A minute later, Phillip found what he was searching for. It was a picture he had taken from Max and little Zan not long before Max had decided to give him up.

Max was holding his son with so much care and love in his eyes, that it was obvious it had been a torture to give him up. Phillip watched on last time at the picture, contemplating it with a faraway look. Finally, he looked up and handed the picture to Alex.

The young boy watched Mr. Evans with a questioning look in his eyes, then looked down at the picture. He gasped when he saw what and who was on the picture. He heard Lily gasped beside him and he turned toward her. Had she recognized him?

“It’s him Alex!… I saw him in my dream!”
Alex faced Mr. Evans, asking the question that was inevitable. “Is… Is it my dad?”

Phillip nodded slightly. “Your dad… and my son.”

TBC….. just tell me whatya think!!!!!

Part 6

Alex looked back at the older man in front of him. Had he heard correctly what he had said?
“Y… Your son?… but if it’s my dad too… then it means that… that you’re….”

“Your grandparents. Yes, Alex. You’re our grandson.”
He was suddenly overwhelmed by thousand of emotions that were running around in his mind: fear, joy, relief, despair. But he felt arms wrapping around him. They weren’t Lily’s arms. They felt just like his mother arm. He had missed that so much. A shoulder to cry on, an adult who would understand him.

He couldn’t hold his tears any longer, and he started crying along with his grandparents. They were holding on him so tight that he could barely breath, but it didn’t matter. He had found his family; he had found what he and Lily had been looking for so long.

But then, what his grandpa had said came back to his mind, and he felt even more confused. He waited until they let go of him; even though he wasn’t ready to do so himself, he knew now he had plenty of time to try and know them.
“Where is he?… I… I mean my dad? Where is he?… You’re his parents, you should know where he is.”

More tears started to pooled at the corner of Diane’s eyes. Just being able to hold her grandson in her arms had been so much, but now, having to tell him the truth, it was so hard.
“Alex…” Phillip started but he couldn’t find the words.

“There is so much to tell… I wish I could explain you but…”
“But what?” Alex felt anger built on him. And even more than anger, it was frustration that he felt at the very moment. He should be happy to have found his grandparents; but at the same time it wasn’t enough.

“you don’t understand… I… I need to know. I need to find him!… I want to understand!”

Phillip shook his head from side to side, not really knowing where to begin. It was obvious that Alex wanted to find his dad; but he didn’t know if it was a good solution.

“Alex, there is something that you don’t know… something that forced your dad to give you up and to flee from this town! It saddened us all, but they just couldn’t do otherwise.”
“They?” The boy gave him another confused look.

“Yes… you see, when he was a kid, your dad-.”
Alex jerked from his seat between his two grandparents, starting to pace in frustration. “I don’t want to know what he did when he was a kid! I just want to know where he is!”

“We can’t tell you that Alex… I wish we could, but we can’t…”
Seeing that he had gave up and sat back, Phillip resumed talking. “A few weeks before he had to flee, your dad… and your aunt, told us something about them, about their origin…”

“Their origin but-.”
“We adopted them when they were 7 Alex… both of them were wandering in the desert when we found them…”

Alex felt even more frustrated by the minute. “Does it mean… does it mean that you’re not really my grandparents?”
“We are Alex. Believe me we are… it was in April if I remember well,… I had started having suspicion about Max and Isabel months before, but it really came to us when we saw a video… On this video, Isabel, your aunt, was levitating objects from her room-.”

He held up his hand, stopping Alex from interrupting him. “I know it’s sound crazy Alex, but if you keep interrupting me, I won’t be able to get it straight out. So lets say it, and then I’ll answer all your questions. Ok?”

Alex just nodded and Phillip started again. “We were as struck as you are right now when we saw the tape, your grandma and me, but at the same, we knew from the beginning that our children were special… and they were; damn yes they were!…” he swallowed passed the lump in his throat; trying to cope with all his emotions at the moment wasn’t the simplest thing ever.

“They both came at the house this night, and I think I’d never seen them so frightened that night when we shown them the tape… They had been hiding this secret for so long, and suddenly everything around them was falling apart... I think your dad was ready to tell us all about them, about their secret… but then you arrive. Your mum was back and Max found her in the kitchen you in her arms. We already knew that you existed, but the shock of seeing you was still hard…the FBI was after you and your mum, all the town was full of agents searching the houses in the middle of the night. When they came to our doors, I first didn’t know what to do; but then Isabel told us that they were actually after you and your mum, because you were alien, just like your father and her…”

Saying that Alex was shocked was an understatement. He had never hard such a story in his life, but yet, the man in front of him who claimed being his grandfather, was so convinced while saying it, that he was almost convinced himself.

“First, we thought it was a real bad joke, but I’d never seen your aunt and father so serious while talking, nor so afraid. Afraid that us, their own parents, would turn them on… I wasn’t even sure myself if Max was even my son anymore. This person in front of me was an alien king and it have been hard for me to accept that he was actually the same person… That he was the kid I had raised and taught my values to… He might have powers and being a hybrid with royal blood, he was still my adoptive son, and I loved, and still love him like he was my blood and flesh… but all the love I gave him couldn’t prevent them to be killed or kidnapped by the FBI or some alien madman… I was clueless and all I could do was watching your dad cried out all the tears he had while giving you up… I think if it hadn’t been for Liz, he wouldn’t have live through… He was as clueless as me, but then what came a few weeks after probably convinced him that he had been right… you see, when your mom came back on earth after being rejected by the madman who had took over their planet, she killed more than 25 people in the process, before being killed herself… I don’t know much about how it happened, but I understood that Liz had some kind of new power who allowed her to see the future, and they foreseen the danger that they were gonna be confront to. And that’s how they left Roswell. The day of their graduation… We hadn’t had any new from them before three weeks when Jeff Parker, Liz’s dad, called us and let us read what the journal Liz had sent him after their departure. She said everything that had happened to them during three years, things we had never been aware of… She concluded saying she was happy and married to the man she had always loved… your dad… that was the last things we ever learnt about them for the last 17 years…”

By the time he ended his tall, tears were streaking on both his and Diane’s faces. Just remembering all the mistake he had made while his children were still there, everything they had had to do just to survive, was killing him. He knew that it wouldn’t be that easy for Alex to accept but at least he had told him the whole true.

He saw the doubtful look in the young boy eyes and just nodded for him to go ahead and ask every questions he wanted to. The first one had been one foreseen: “Is it a joke?… Do you realised that you just told me that my dad was some kind of alien king… and that he had to flee from the FBI and that it was the reason he gave me up?… Do you really think that I’m gonna believe that? That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard!”

“Believe it or not Alex, but I only said the truth… I know it must be really hard on you, but you have to think rationally-.”

Alex was on his feet, pacing when he heard Phillip’s last words. “Rationally! Are you kid-… What are you trying to do by the way! Scare me! And now you’re asking me to think rationally! You’re talking about aliens being among us, only that isn’t something rational so excuse me if I have a hard time thinking rationally!”

There was a silence, as nor neither Phillip nor Diane knew what to answer. They knew by experience, that it was something hard to accept, but it was even more for Alex as it made him an alien prince himself…

The silence was cut by Lily’s first words in the conversation. She had listened carefully at what Mr. Evans had said, and strangely, she was ready to accept it.
“What if it is right Alex? What if he said true? It could explain so much: you feeling the other’s feelings, my dreams, and this time you heal a little cat!.. maybe you should think about it Alex, it’s not coincidences… I know that.”

Alex’s eyes softened as he looked at his mates and mother of his child. “But it’s crazy Lily.”
Lily didn’t answer, she just turned to the one who seemed to be able to give her answers finally.
“Is it Mr. Evans?”

Phillip watched the young girl beside him. She reminded him so much of Max’s Liz: Same calm and reasoning mind, same soft and caring motion and words toward her boyfriend. Even though he hadn’t know Liz so much the first years, he had soon learnt she had a great influence on Max, and if what he thought about this young girl was true, then Lily had probably some influence on Alex too.

“It surely is… One of Max’s power was one of healing. It is how everything started, when he healed Liz Parker from a shoot wound at the restaurant she was working…”
He turned to his grandson. “You probably inherited some of his abilities… When your mother came back with you, she said you were totally human and that’s what convinced Max that you had the right to have a normal life… the fact of you being totally human was probably another lie from your mother.”

Alex frowned, giving his grandpa an hurt look. He wasn’t really pleased by what he was hearing: first he was some kind of alien born on another planet, next his mom had lied to his dad before dying. “Another lie?”

Phillip winced at that. Maybe he had said too much too fast. He didn’t want his grandson to be implied in the ‘alien abyss’ too fast. It could disgust him.
“I… I’ll explain later… I want to be sure that you understood everything I said… And what it means for Lily… Alex, she is carrying an alien baby, and I’ve no idea what it could imply for her healthiness and the baby’s.

It hit Alex suddenly. Phillip was right. If all this was true, then it made their life even more complicated. He felt his knees giving underneath his weight and he had to sit back down. He felt Lily’s arms surrounding him, getting strength from her touch.
“We’ll find a way.” He stated suddenly… “I won’t let anything happen to our baby… alien or not.” He added more to himself than to her.

Phillip came to sit next to his grandson, putting a comforting hand on his shoulder. “I know you want answers Alex… but maybe it’s time for everyone to got to bed and try to get some much needed rest… I know that you two must be really tired after this long travel… but-.”

He forced the young man to look in his eyes, and turned his head to have their both attention. “You were right to come here… Diane and I are both happy that you decided to come to us… when I give you to the social worker I was convinced that it’d be the last time I’d see you… I’m glad you choose to come here.”

****************
Seattle. 9 PM. Mickey’s room.

He laid on his bad, hands behind the head, contemplating the first happy day he had had in months. He had this grin plastered on his smile that wouldn’t go away, and he had seen the weird look his father had sent him the whole dinner.

He never thought he would be that happy again in his life. Everything had seemed so complicated lately, with his new powers showing, his fear to hurt his friends, and his new responsibilities as crown prince. His didn’t thought his dad will ever see him like someone else than his heir… He missed their encounters at the lake early in the morning; he missed the simple father/son relationship he had always had with his dad.

But he was the only one to blame for it’s lost. He had been the one asking for intimacy and independence; he had been the one who had cut the connection between he and his parents.

But today… today had been different. As if, when he was with Carry, his life was suddenly clear and simple. He had shown her the town after school, the place he liked to hang out at; and he had even talked with John a little, introduced him to his new friend. It had been so long since he had had a real conversation with him, and it had felt good talking with someone who really know him for once.

He heard a knocked at the window and held up his head, seeing who was behind the window.
He went to open it and even through the closed window he could hear the music pounding from the radio Tom was holding under his arm.

“Hey guys!… Tom can you turn that thing off, I don’t want to wake my parents.”
Tom turned the radio off, turning to his younger friend. “So whatya bee’ up ta?”

“Well, nothing much actually.” Mickey felt suddenly awkward facing his two friends. After the afternoon he had had, he wasn’t so sure he wanted to hang out with them anymore.

Sarah cocked her head to the side, eyeing him suspiciously, seeing the fearful look in the 13 years old grown as minutes passed.
“Up ta hav’ some fun wi’ us?”
“Hum… well I’m stuck at home… can’t go out.” He sputtered out.
“C’mon. I’m sure they won’ see you gone! They don’ care anyway!” she dismissed the last word with a raised hand.

Mickey felt a pang of hurt at hearing her harsh words. It hadn’t bother him the last few months, but now it was different. “Sorry I can’t go.”
He started closing the window, but Tom held it open. “Wai’! Ya can’t go!… heard of the new ‘lready?… Sarah thought it’d be fun ta eggs her house… watcha think?”

Mickey’s head jerked at that. It had been something he had done several time already, but knowing that it was Carry’s house, he couldn’t let that happen.
“I… I know her… Hey guys, please don’t do that, she’s a nice girl!”

The laugher he got in return wasn’t reassuring, and he was tempted to just follow them just to be sure they wouldn’t do it, but he was tired of being punished, tired of lying to his parents. And if he insisted, they wouldn’t do it… yeah, that was probably the good things to do.
“Please, guy, I’ll do whatever you want. Just don’t egg her house ok?”

Tom and Sarah looked at him, the laugher dying. “Ok! Ok! We won’t do it!…”
“Haf’ fun sleepin’ man!…” Tom turned to his girlfriend while turning is radio back on. “C’mon ya! We’re outta here…. See ya latter Mick!” He shouted back without turning back.

Max watched from the door which had staid slightly ajar. He had heard the commotion coming from his son’s room, and he had been ready to burst into it and let his presence known, but then he had seen his son rejecting the two punk kids’ offer. Maybe there was a chance that his son was back finally. Maybe the crisis was over…

**************
Alex woke up early the next morning; he hadn’t been able to sleep well last night. He had tossed and turned for hours before finally the tiredness of the last month had taken it’s toll on him.

He knew Lily needed her sleep, so he slide out of the bed, slipping his pant back off, as well as the shirt Grandma had given him, and he made his way out of the room.
He entered the kitchen to find Grandpa sitting alone at the table; it was only 6 am, and he wondered if he had had as much of a hard time to sleep.

“Hey.”
Phillip was startled by Alex’s arrival. He was always the only one up, he had learnt to be as his children had been morning sleeper. And he had thought that it would be the same for Alex and Lily. But the circle under the young man eyes told him Alex hadn’t sleep a lot more than him.

“Hey Alex! It’s still early. You couldn’t sleep? I’m sure Diane will bring you back to bed as soon as she’ll see those black circles you’re sporting.” He tried to light up the mood, knowing that the next days were going to be hard on both him and Alex.
“Here come and sit down. I made some cafe.”

He gave him a mug and filled it, then sit back down and both remained silent while drinking their morning drug. After a moment, Phillip put his mug aside, feeling it was time to have a discussion.

“Do you believe me now Alex?… I mean, I know what I told you last night was a shocking news, but it’s the only truth.

Alex hanged his head low, refusing to meet his grandpa’s eyes. “I… I don’t know who… or what I should believe… it’s just…. All those stuffs… about my dad, and his origins… it’s just so confusing!”

“I know it is. But you don’t have the time to think about it too much… I mean, Lily is pregnant and…”
He stopped knowing that Alex must have had this conversation already with his adoptive parents, and probably with Lily’s too. “I’m not here to judge you Alex… I just… I’ve been in that situation before with your dad. Though you were already born and I didn’t have to worry about you being healthy or not. I know you were… Now, can you tell me how it happened?”

Alex raised an eyebrow, feeling his cheeks flushed at the question. “Well.. you know… I mean… is it supposed to be different for alien?… because, we… we did it the normal way… I mean… I think we did…”
Lily had been the only girl in his life, and he suddenly wondered if them being intimate was different just because he had alien’s origins.

Phillip couldn’t help the smile from forming on his lips. “Well, I don’t think there is any differences actually… I was thinking about a more practical way of it… how did she end up pregnant? Weren’t you two careful, I mean you’ re both still so young.”

Alex didn’t know if it was possible to be more flush than he was now. Even his dad hadn’t had the time to question him about that. “well… I… we… I forgot… only once… we thought it was ok… because Lily was on the pill but… it didn’t work…”
The thought occurred to him as he was talking. “Do you think it could be alien related?… I mean the fact that the pill didn’t work?”

“I don’t know. Maybe…”
he didn’t know if it was because he had already had this problem with his own son, but Phillip felt he would be much more understanding than he has been the first time. Probably because he felt that those kids were lost, and that they hadn’t come here to have another lecture, but to find someone to help them through this crisis. And now he realised he hadn’t even given them that reassurance. All he had done was adding even more pressure on the couple.

“Alex, I want you to know that you’ve been right to come… Your grandma and I will help you as much as we can. You’re our grandson, and be sure we are happy to have you both at home with us… though there was something I wanted to know about Lily’s pregnancy..”

“Sure.”
“She said that she had seen Max-… I mean, your father, in a dream already. She recognized him. Has she had a lot of dreams like that? What else did she see?”

Alex frowned at the sudden interest grandpa had for Lily’s dream. She had promised she’d resist the ‘pull’ as she had called it, and she had obviously hold her promise. Now, knowing that it could be alien related, it made thing different. Like maybe it was something normal; maybe it was even a need for the baby.

“I… She didn’t tell me much… I kinda… forbidden her to do that again… I was scared of what may happen, and I didn’t want her or the baby to be hurt… I thought it was just because she was exhausted you know.”

“I understand… Though, it may help. Max hadn’t time to tell me much about this connection he was sharing with Liz but-.” “Who’s Liz?” Alex interrupted him.

Phillip was a little taken aback by this question. But then he realised he hadn’t really told his grandson who were those people who had surrounded Max’s world for so long. He took a look at the young boy, and finally decided it was time for a little flash back.

He stood up, went to the closet in the living room where he knew Diane had put all their photo albums, took some with him, and sat back down next to his grandson. He opened the first one and handed it to Alex, nodding when he gave him an unconvinced look.

“Here.” He pointed to one black and white photo, on which a 7 years old sat on a blench, in some kind of playground, looking distract. He had jay black hair, just like him, and look strangely familiar. “It’s one of the first picture we took of your dad. He was acting like it was the first time he was seeing a playground… and it was. We just didn’t know that at the time.”

He turned another page, and this time, a blond girl was sitting on the same blench, next to Max.
Phillip pointed to the little girl. “It’s Isabel. Max’s sister… and your aunt. We found both of them on the road this night in 1989, they didn’t know anything; from how to use facilities, to how to play.”

Alex gave him a questioning look. “But weren’t you suspicious?”
Phillip just shook his head. “The physician at the orphanage told us they had probably lived something really stressful, and that the only way they had found to heal was to forget… We never thought about them being other than normal kids who had lived an horrible experience and who wanted another chance in life.”

Phillip didn’t want to continue on this subject, he had a lot more to explain, and it would take time. He turned another page and smiled at the picture in front of him; at least it wouldn’t only bring back bad memories, it would also remind him of all the good ones.

Diane and Lily entered the room one hour later, finding both Phillip and Alex laughing at an anecdote Phillip had told about Max. “Well, it seems like we didn’t miss you!”

Diane went immediately to her grandson, wrapping her arms around him, whispering in his ear:
“We’re so happy you’re here.”
It brought a smile to his lips; he couldn’t help being overwhelm by all the emotions he had to cope with at the moment. But his eyes caught Lily who had sat in front of him, and he knew it wasn’t over. He may have found his grandparents, but he wasn’t done yet. He was determinate to find his dad too.

Lily couldn’t help taking a look at the album laying under Mr. Evans’s elbow. Her brown furrowed when she recognized another face. She pointed at one photograph on which Max and Liz were holding hands, oblivious to everything around.
“Who’s that? Is it Alex’s mom?”

Phillip hadn’t been there yet. They still had to enter the important part of his son’s life. The beginning of his life as an alien. He knew it would come sooner or later and he needed to do that.

“This is Liz…”

**************

Mickey entered the high school’s hallway a smile on his lips. His little encounter with his two friends last night hadn’t broken his high mood, and this morning he found himself grinning like a fool while waking up just at the idea of seeing Carry again.

He looked around the place, trying to see through the crow of student. Although he was tall for his age, he wasn’t as tall as the seniors and if he hadn’t known the school better thanks to his parents working here, he would have lost his way back to his classroom more than once.

His smile widened when he saw her facing locker, obviously busy arranging things inside. She didn’t see him approached and jerked when he put a hand on her shoulder.
“Hey! Sorry, I didn’t want to startled you.”

She faced him and he was surprised to see fresh tears track on her cheeks. The tears had started fall again the moment she had entered the school, and she had been hiding her face in the locker trying not to draw attention. But she hadn’t heard Mickey coming and she was even more embarrassed now.

“Oh, he Mickey, how are you?”
She wiped the tears trying to avoid his gaze, but he had seen her crying and his smile had faded immediately. “Are you ok? Why are you crying?”

“I… it’s ok, it’s nothing really.”
“No I know it’s not, c’mon tell me what’s wrong.” He insisted.

Carry looked at him, finally giving up, her tears started to fall again but she didn’t care.
“Guys came last night and eggs our houses… My dad tried to stop them but they beat him, He… he is at the hospital.”

The shock on Mickey’s face was obvious. He couldn’t believe that. He had thought he had insisted enough last night. He had known Tom and Sarah enough to be sure they wouldn’t do something he didn’t want to do himself… but now he wasn’t sure anymore. They were the only people he knew at school who were able to do something like that.

“Do… Do you remember how they looked like?… the people who did that to your dad.”

She gave him a confused look, her tears finally stopping now that she had said what was weighing on her heart since this morning.
“Not quiet… They were young I think. One boy and a girl. They had leather jackets… but Mickey, I already said that to the police and they’ll take care of that.”

But Mickey knew it was wrong. Sarah’s dad was the sheriff and even if they’d catch them, they’d be out of jail in no time. They were even probably already out.

“Ok, you go to class I’ve something to do.”
Carry eyed him carefully, not knowing what he was up to. “But you’re gonna miss first period.”

“It’s ok.”

Part 7 A

Mickey watched from side to side as he entered the empty field. He knew where to find them. They were always here. He had been there with them often… too often.

His heart started beating faster as he heard Tom’s laughter reverberating against the walls of the locker room. He knew their hiding-place, he knew what they were doing, and he knew what he was getting involved into. But there was no turning back now.

He stopped at the entrance door, took a deep breath and entered the room.
“Hey Mick! Bud’! We di’n’ think you’ come!”

************
Max wandered around the desks, watching over his students’ shoulders; a habit he had taken after a few years of teaching. He knew it made the students uncomfortable, but sometimes, the temptation was too great to resist.

He was watching over Carry’s shoulder when someone knocked at the door. He silently made his way to the hallway, trying not to bother the kids as they worked on an important test. He met the young senior working at the counselor office.

“Matthew? Everything is fine?”
The young boy switched from one foot to foot, obviously upset. “Hum, Mr. Taylor… asked me to come and get you… I think… I think it’s about your son.”

“About Mickey? Can’t it wait till next period?”
Matthew nervously shook his head… He knew very well what was waiting for Mr. Evans’ son. And it wasn’t good. His own brother had been involved in that kind of things before and he knew the punishment for it.

“… Ok… well, hum. Do you think you could watch over them for a few minutes? I’ll be back.”

Before he was able to object, Max was gone running toward the administration office.

************
Max knocked slightly at the door of the counselor, waiting for an answer. He got a calm ‘Come in.” and opened the door.

He knew he had knew he would have to see Mr. Taylor about Mickey sooner or later, but he wouldn't have believed it would be so soon. But then, he entered the room and understood the urgency.

Mickey was sitting in front of Mr. Taylor, his head hanging low. Max frowned slightly as he approached his son. “Mickey? You’re not in your class? What are you doing here?”

Mickey held up his head shamefully, showing several bruises and wounds adorning his feature. Max couldn’t help the gasp that escaped his lips. He immediately knelt in front of his son, ready to heal those marks immediately.
“Who? Who did that to you, son?”

Mr. Taylor cleared his throat, reminding Max of his presence.
“Hum… Mr. Evans. I think we need to talk…” He turned to Mickey, nodding toward the door.
“Why don’t you wait outside Michael?”

Mickey made his way out, refusing to meet his dad’s gaze yet. He knew what was coming and when his dad will come out of the office he wouldn’t be as concerned for him as he was now.

Once he was gone, Max sat in front of the desk and asked urgently.
“Who did that Mr. Taylor? What happened? Do you know?”

Mr. Taylor sighted deeply, obviously bothered by what he was going to say.
“Your son was involved in a fight Mr. Evans…”

Max gave him a confused look. Never had Mickey been involved in a fight at school. On the contrary, besides missing his first period, he kept a low profile most of the time there. Even on the last few months that had been really hard for him, he had never shown any change of behavior at school.

“What do you mean? It’s obvious someone beat him! I want to know who did that to my son. Who else was involved?”

“Actually Mr. Evans, it seems that it was your son who started the fight! He wasn’t beaten by any of his fellows; the student he attacked just defended himself…. It was Tom Balley.”
He finally answered to a very stunned Max.

“What… what?… Are you saying that my son provoked another student in a fight?”
“Apparently your son attacked Tom without any reasons… He knocked him unconscious Mr. Evans! I’m sure it may sound crazy, and knowing your son like I know him, it does sound crazy to me too, but I saw Tom. He was really in a bad state…”

Seeing the fear on Max’s face, he tried to correct his words immediately. “Don’t worry, he is ok now. He was just a little dizzy for a few minutes, and they sent him to the hospital just to check that everything was ok. I got a phone call a few minutes ago and he is coming back home at this very moment… What I’m worrying about Mr. Evans, it’s about your son’s behavior. He was a calm student until the beginning of the year. I don’t know what happened to him, but if there are problems at home maybe you should tell me…”

When Max didn’t make any attempts to talk, he continued.
“I think he should go back and stay at home for a few days. Maybe until next Monday?… and maybe you should try and talk to him.”

Max didn’t have anything to say. He never thought it would go that far. And when he came out of the office, he was more shocked than angered.

He took Mickey’s arm and led him to his car. They stepped inside without a word and the way back home was silent.

When they finally entered the house, Mickey tried to make a beeline for his room but Max stopped him dead in his track. “Wait!… I want to talk to you.”

Max went to sit on the couch and Mickey followed him uncomfortably. He sat on the recliner in front of Max… After a long silence, Max raised his head meeting his son’s eyes.
“Can you tell me why you did that? Why you attacked this kid?… you may be having a crisis right now, but you’ve never been the kind to attack without a reason.”

There was a silence. Mickey met his dad’s eyes. He couldn’t tell him. If he told him, then he would want to know how he knew it was Tom and Sarah who egged Carry’s house, and he’d know that he had talked to them last night… He decided to just not tell him and stood up.

“I think there is a beginning for everything.”
He went straight to his room without a glance toward his dad.

**************
Carry was surprised when she didn’t meet Mickey at her locker after her first period in Mr. Evans’s class. And she was even more disappointed when she realized he wouldn’t come.

She walked fast toward her next class knowing she had lost some time waiting till the last minute for him. Strangely, the name of her new biology teacher was Evans, just like her English teacher’s who happened to be Mickey’s father.

So now she couldn’t help wondering if this woman who seemed to be in her early thirties was also Mickey’s mother. But she didn’t bother to check, she was too preoccupied by Mickey’s absence. She hadn’t seen him since this morning and after Mr. Evans fast departure during the test, she couldn’t help worrying.

Maybe she could come and see what was up with him after school. Maybe he wasn’t feeling well.

Lena came to sit down next to her and broke her course of thoughts. “Hey Carry!” They had met yesterday when Mickey had shown her around the school; she was with this other boy, John, who appeared to be her boyfriend, and Mickey’s best friend. They had talked for a little while, and had found they had several common points.

“Did you hear about Mickey?”
Lena whispered into her ear when Mrs. Evans entered the classroom.
“What about him?” Carry asked even more concerned than a few minutes ago.
“I heard he was out of school for a week. He started a fight with Tom Balley this morning, a sophomore…”

Carry’s shocked expression wasn’t missed by her new friend. “Do… do you know why he did that?” She managed to croak out.
“I don’t know but he must have had a good reason. Mickey would never hurt someone on purpose without a good reason…”

Carry’s head straightened as she heard Mrs. Evans called her name, she answered absently and didn’t even notice the knowing smile her new teacher was giving her. Instead she was back deep in thought, suddenly very aware of Mickey’s reason for attacking this sophomore boy.

***********
Carry was nervously switching her weight from one feet to the other as she waited for someone to answer the door. Why was she here? She didn’t know. What had passed through her mind when she had decided to walk straight to the Evans’s house after school?

Now she was standing in front of the door, nervously tugging on her lips, and she knew she had nothing to do here. But before she could chicken out, the door flew open reveling an obviously angry Mr. Evans.

But his face suddenly soften when she met his eyes. “Oh hey Carry! What are you doing here? A problem with your English homework?”

She smiled awkwardly. “Er… no… hum… I wanted to see Mickey… if it’s possible.”

She saw the change in her teacher’s face immediately and regret coming here. Who would want to make this beautiful smile of him disappeared?
“Mickey is grounded; I’m sorry Carry but you’ll have to come back another day.”

He started closing the door, but she pushed it back open in sudden boldness. “No! Wait!… Mr. Evans, I’m sorry, I really need to talk to him! Or at least, could you give him a message from me?” she pleaded.

“Well, yeah, I guess I can.” He folded his arms on his chest waiting for her to speak.

She gulped several time before starting. “Tell him… tell him that I’m sorry he was involved in this fight because of me… and that he shouldn’t have done that for me.. but.. but I thank him anyway.”

Max frowned at her words, trying to figure out what she was trying to say. “What are you talking about Carry? Do you know why Mickey was involved in this fight?”
He suddenly asked worriedly.

It was her turned to frown. What did he mean? Hadn’t Mickey told him? Or maybe it was her who was wrong; maybe Mickey hadn’t beaten this boy for her sake at all. She felt suddenly really stupid. How could she think he would do something like that for her? He barely knew her.

“I… I’m sorry Mr. Evans… I… I thought he… I thought he had done that because of me…I…” She tried to smile a little to hide her discomfort.

“You see Mr. Evans, this morning I.. I was crying and he asked what was wrong… and I told him someone had egged my house… and, and that my dad was at the hospital after trying to stop the guys who did it… but… I… I’m sorry Mr. Evans I shouldn’t have come.”

She turned on her heel, attempting to run back to her house at a dead run, but Max was faster and took her arm before she could flee from the house.

“No! Carry, listen..”

He waited till she was back in front of him, a smile on his lips, realizing suddenly the reasons his son had been involved in a fight, and he couldn’t help feeling proud.
“I think you should go and talk to him…”

Carry was taken aback. A minute Mr. Evans was forbidding her to see Mickey and next he was inviting her to come in. “..I.. I don’t know… are you… are you sure Mr. Evans?”

“Absolutely. Here come in.”
He stepped back to let her in and she entered her teacher’s house. “You climb the stair and his room is the second on the right.” He indicated before retreating into the living room.

She hesitated a moment, but suddenly realized she was alone in the entryway. She took two stepped at a time and came face to face with her new biology teacher.
“Mrs. Evans!”

“Carry?! Nice to see you here. Are you coming to see Mickey? Here come with me.”

The woman took her hand and led her through the hallway. Now that she could take a good look at the tiny woman who was tugging on her hand, she realized that the likeness was obvious. Even though Mickey looked a lot more like his dad, he had also a lot of his mother, starting by his eyes.

Mrs. Evans stopped at a door covered by a Metallica poster and a “don’t disturb” sign hanging from the doorknob. She knocked slightly and when she didn’t get any answer she opened the door.

Carry couldn’t see the inside of the room from where she was standing but she could hear the soft music.
“Hey, honey ? You’ve a visitor.”

Liz pushed the young girl into the room before she could chicken out. “We’re going at Maria and Michael’s in an hour Mickey, be ready honey.”

Seeing the shocked look on his face at the sight of his new girlfriend standing in the middle of his room, Liz just stifled a laughed and left the room before waiting for an answer from her son she knew would never come.

She couldn’t help but plastered her ear against the wood of the door, and tried to catch a sound. But the sound of steps coming from the stairs startled her and before she knew it, Max was beside her.

“Are you eavesdropping on our son, honey?” Max asked amused.
Liz just shook her head innocently, never trusting her voice. “You're sure?” he insisted while putting his arm around her slim waist.

“Yeeeaahhh…why did you let her in anyway, I thought he was grounded for the rest of his life?”
She tried to change the subject.

“Well.. Carry changed my mind.”

Liz hadn’t even bother to ask what else their son had been up to. She had gave up months ago and now all she could do was watching helplessly as he got more and more away from her. She now let Max handle dealing with their teen son. She didn’t want to fight him anymore. She wanted to be there for him and she didn’t mind not knowing all he was up to behind her back. She was aware it was cowardice to do that, but she just couldn’t handle it and she knew Max was there to do it.

“Guess that’s good news…”

Max felt his wife’s turmoil and raised her face to look into her eyes, both his hands resting on her cheeks. “He is getting better you know… I believe he is.”

Liz look silently into her husband’s eyes, taking strength from him. “I can’t believe anything right now Max… don’t ask me to get my hopes up if there is nothing to hope for.”

**************

Mickey didn’t know what hit him when he realized who was standing in the middle of his room. God she was gorgeous today! Those low cut pants were hugging her hips so well, and this tight blue shirt was just perfect on her.

He shook his head, chastised himself for thinking like that about her. “Oh hey Carry! What are you doing here?”

God, what was she doing here? If she had told everything to his dad, he was dead for sure. Why had he let her in anyway? Wasn’t he supposed to be grounded?

He smiled when he saw her nervously biting on her lower lip and wondered if it was a girl’s thing because his mom kept doing that whenever she was nervous.
When he didn’t get any answer, he just stood up and went to stand in front of her. “Carry?”

Her head snapped up and she smiled nervously. “Oh hey Mickey!” She was so engrossed into the discovery of his sanctuary that she hadn’t even seen him standing up. She jumped when she saw him right in front of her, almost falling when she stumbled on her feet.

His hand grabbed at her arm straightening her back on her feet, and she felt electricity coursed through her body at the contact. Why was she feeling that way? Why was she acting so nervously? He was only a boy for god’s sake!

‘A boy that make your heartbeat fastened whenever he’s around’; she heard a little voice whisper in her head. What was that supposed to mean? She couldn’t even look into his eyes in fear that she might turn into flames.

Mickey felt her arm trembled under his hand and couldn’t help worrying. “Are you ok? Are you cold? I can give you a sweater if you want?”

Cold? Was she cold? NO! Was he kidding? She was burning from the inside-out! Why would he think she was cold?
“No!.. I mean… no, it’s ok… I’m ok.” She managed to sputter out.

What? What had he said? He wanted to give her a sweater? His sweater? Could she be anymore stupid. Why had she said she wasn’t cold? She could have at least pretended. At least she would have had something of him to snuggle into when she’d be back at home all alone in her room and...

Her thoughts were brutlly interrupted when she realized what she was thinking. What was the matter with her?

Suddenly his hand wasn’t on her anymore and he went to sit back on the chair at his desk, inviting her to take a seat on his bed. “So? What brings you here?”

The time she took to sit on the side of his bed gave her a few seconds to recompose herself and she finally found her voice back. She fumbled in her backpack, and handed him a neat packet of notes.

“Those are my notes.. from the different classes we have together… Lena and John said they’d bring you the ones that were missing.. if you wanted to.”

Mickey’s smile disappeared when he realized why she was there. So it was only for the homework and notes.. still, he couldn’t help thinking it was a nice gesturn coming from someone he had only known for one day.

“Mickey, I know what you did.” He heard her say. And his face flushed bright red with shame.

So she had heard. Was it his dad who had told her, or was it all over the school already. “Lena told me.” She answered his unspoken question.

“Oh… Listen Carry, I’m sorry you heard about that I-.”
“Thank you.”

He was cut dead in his track at her words. Why was she thanking him for?

Carry saw the questioning look on his eyes and smiled shyly. “I know why you did it… and I thank you for that…I didn’t want you to get into trouble for me… but you did. You take this risk just for me whereas you don’t even know me and… and I didn’t know how to thank you so I brought you the notes of the day.. and I’ll bring you them everyday after class as long as you’ll be at home… if you let me..”

Mickey stared at her dumbstruck by her revelation. So she was there to thank him? He felt pride from doing this for her, and knowing she had made all this way to his house from the school only to thank him was enough to not regret his action of this morning.

“You’re welcome…” was all he could manage as he watched her stand up.

“I should go now.”
“Why?” he asked hastily. “My parents and I are going out tonight; my cousin is having her 6th birthday party. Why don’t you come with us?”

“I’d love to but-… I’d like to go see my dad at the hospital before the visits are over.”
“I could come with you, that way I could apologized for what those guys did to him.”
“There is no need for that Mickey.”
“I insist.”

She shyly lowered her head, a smile dancing on her lips. Eventually she raised her head, grinning.
“I’ll see you tomorrow Mickey…”

It was all she said before opening his door, turning one last time to look into his eyes, and seconds later he heard her fast departure as she ran the stairs and said her last goodbye to his parents as she met them in the hallway.

*********
Max waited until Carry had closed the door behind her before standing from his spot next to Liz on the couch. He bent down, taking his daughter into his arm and giving her a butterfly kiss on her soft cheek. Her giggles made him smile and he knew he needed that.

“When is the party exactly.”
“Maria and Michael were closing at 6.30. The party should start around 7 I guess.”
Max took a look at his watch. “It gives me half an hour.”

Liz stood up and came to wrapped her arms around his waist, her chin resting on his shoulder blade. “You don’t have to do it tonight, it can wait.”
But Max shook his head. He couldn’t wait, he had taken a decision and he didn’t want to take the risk of changing his mind. “No. I need to do it tonight; or I’ll never do it.”

“Then take your time. Me and Beth will go to the party and you and Mickey will meet us there whenever you’re done… right sweetie!” she ended up taking her little girl from her husband’s arm, blowing kisses on her cheek, being reward by more giggles.

She was taking that way too easily Max couldn’t help thinking. But he wouldn’t push her too far. He knew it was a big decision for her, and even though she had eventually accepted it, he knew she was concerned by their son’s reaction to the news.

“So… you sure you don’t want to be there? What if he wants to talk to you?”
Liz gave him a confident look. “Then he’ll come to the party and we’ll talk… it’s you who’s going to tell him Max. I’m not part of this and I don’t want to.”
She made it clear for him before leaning on his chest and kissed his lips slightly before heading for the kitchen.

“I go make my salad for the buffet and we’ll be gone in 20 minutes. I’ll let you the jeep, join us whenever you’re done Max, but take all your time.”
