Prologue
Rath was about to sit down to dinner when he heard someone at the door. He knew that Cerrian had gotten the door already.
“M’lord there is a messenger here to see you” Cerrian said with a slight curtsy.
“Send him in” Rath ordered.
Cerrian nodded and left the room. She returned with a message carrier close behind.
“Well give it here than” Rath demanded.
He paid the carrier and dismissed them both. He examined the letter and recognized the name of a woman he had a relationship with some months ago. He opens it and began to read.
Dear Rath,
I sure you are surprised to here from me but I’m writing to you of a very important nature. You have a Son. His beautiful and looks just like you. I know what your think that he can’t possible be yours but he is yours. I found out I was pregnant with him shortly after our relationship ended and I wasn’t with any other man but you. I wasn’t going to tell you but I’m dieing and I don’t have any family so you are all he has. Please come as soon as possible I won’t to make sure he is alright before I die.
Sincerely,
Livva
Rath sat back in his in complete shock. ‘He had a son. How the hell did this happen he was always careful’ he thought to himself. ‘He would go see the boy and if he proved to be his he would take care of him.’
“Cerrian!” Rath shouted.
“Yes M’lord” Cerrian said as she walked in the dining room.
“I need you to pack some clothes for me, I’m going on a trip” Rath told her.
“Yes M’lord” Cerrian said and was gone.
‘It would take at least two weeks to reach Livva. What’s he gonna tell Zan? What’s he gonna tell his Mother? He’ll worry about that later. He needed to make arrangements for his departure.’ Rath thought before he left.
Part 1
Rath was on his to Gonjur where Livva lived. He chose to take the train because it was the fast way there. His mother, Lady Rowena, had chosen to accompany him on his little journey. When he was making arrangements for the trip he made the mistake of telling her about livva and his ‘might be’ son.
“I really don’t know why you had to come” Rath asked his mother.
“Because if this boy is your son then he is my grandson and besides what do you know about children anyway?” His mother replied.
“You know he might not be mine” Rath told her so she didn’t get her hopes up.
“With the way you hop from one woman to the next I’m surprised more women haven’t come to claiming you’re the father of their children” his mother said with an annoying laugh.
Rath didn’t say a word just gave a look that he didn’t find her comment funny. His mother only continued to laugh more.
“Your father used to give that some look when he was irritated by something I said or did” his mother said through her laughter.
He let out a breath of frustration and rolled over to try and get some sleep. The trip went fairly fast and before he knew it he was in Gonjur. He immediately went to see livva, his mother wished to go with him but he had to do this alone. He made sure that she was comfortably set up in a hotel and then he was on his way.
Once he got to livva house he stood outside for a minute before knocking on the door. An old wrinkled gentleman answered the door.
“How may I help you sir?” asked the old man.
“I’m here to see Miss Livva Deherd” Rath answered old man.
“I’m sorry sir but Miss Livva pasted sometime last night” the old man informed him.
“What of her son?” Rath inquired.
“For the moment my wife and I are looking after the boy until his father comes for him” the old man told him.
“Well I’m here” Rath said bluntly.
The old man invited Rath in and introduced himself.
“Forgive me M’lord I am Rutherford, my wife I have been employed by Miss Livva for some years now. She asked to look over the boy until you arrive. Would you like to see him?” Rutherford asked.
Rath nodded his head yes and followed him upstairs. He was lead to the nursery where an old woman was sitting next to the bassinet where the boy was sleeping.
Rutherford introduced his wife “This is my wife Claries.”
“What’s the boy’s name?” Rath asked gazing done at his sleeping from.
“Um.....Miss Livva didn’t name him, she was terribly ill. And we thought it best for you to name him” Claries answered.
“How did she die?” Rath wondered
“There were many complications throughout her pregnancy, the doctor even suggested terminating the pregnancy but she wouldn’t hear of it. They told her of the risk if she went through with the pregnancy but she didn’t care. She lost a lot of blood during the birth, ran incredibly high fevers and slip in and out of consciousness. All the doctor could do was to make her as comfortable as possible” Claries explained.
“Where is the doctor? I must speak with him immediately” Rath asked
“I’ll take you to him. Claries can look after the boy until you return” Rutherford offered.
Rath thanked them both and followed Rutherford to his cart. The trip was relatively short and within ten minutes he was at the doctor’s office. Rath entered the building and spoke with his secretary. The doctor was with a patient so he had to wait, it wasn’t long though. The doctor came out and introduced himself.
“Hi I’m Dr. Lathes, How can I help?” Dr. Lathes asked.
“I need to speak with concerning the son of Miss Livva Deherd” Rath answered.
“Why don’t we go into my office” Dr. Lathes suggested.
Rath followed into office and sat down.
“I assume you’re here because you’re the boy’s father but what do you want from me?” Dr. Lathes stated.
“You assume right doctor and I need you to prove if the boy is really mine” Rath told him.
“You mean a blood test; I can do that, it won’t take more the a few minutes. I just need a blood sample, I already have one of the boy” Dr. Lathes assured him.
Rath allowed him to draw some blood. He was able to watch the procedure. Dr. Lathes put the two samples in a machine and turned it on. After two minutes the machine printed out the results, he was the father. He thanked the doctor and paid him for his services and Livva medical bills.
Rutherford was waiting for him and went to Livva attorney’s office. Livva had left her estate to Rutherford and his wife. She left her assets and savings to her son. Rath told the attorney that he would pay for the funerals and any bills. The funeral was the next day. After all the arrangements were taken care he and his mother left for home with his son.
-On the Train-
“You’re going to need a nanny to help you take care of him” His mother suggested.
“I suppose but why can’t you just watch him” Rath replied
“Because I’ve raised my children but I’ll help you find the best nanny for.... what did you name him?” his mother offered.
Rath looked down at the sleeping boy in his arms and replied to his mother “Leto after father.”
The day after they returned Leto was the subject of all sort of gossip. His mother had spoken with several of her friends and got references for some nannies. Rath had set up interviews with five that he liked. They were all good and well experienced but when they tried to hold Leto he screamed until they put him down.
“He’s a very picky baby isn’t he” his mother had said.
Until he found someone that was to his son’s liking Cerrian watches him while he’s in meetings with Zan.
“M’lord I think I found a nanny for Leto” Cerrian said as she entered his study.
“Really, what are her credentials?” Rath asked.
“She doesn’t have any experince but she took care of both her younger siblings for her parents while they worked. She comes from a family of hard workers and I know her mother well” Cerrian assured him.
-In The Nursery-
Cerrian had left Niama in the Nursery to look over Leto while she spoke to Lord Rath.
Niama looked at the boy that would be her future charge. The boy had dark black hair, dark brown eyes, and a cute round face with cubby cheeks. He didn’t look older the one month.
‘I wonder what his father is like. Is he the womanizing brute that people gossip about?’ thought Niama.
Leto began to fuss and cry as if he knew she was think bad about his father. She reached down and picked him up and began to sing a lullaby that her mother used to sing to her. He quieted down and looked at Niama with wonder at sound coming out of her mouth. After a while he slowly drifted to sleep.
“Impressive, Leto doesn’t usual warm up to people so quickly” Rath said as he entered the nursery.
Niama was so startled that for a moment she was afraid of dropping Leto. She turned around to find a tall, handsome man staring at her. His eyes were dark and unexpressive, his face held a harden look. Rath reached out hands and Niama placed the sleeping boy in his arms.
“Cerrian that will be all for know, I’ll be in my study if you need me” Rath said.
Niama hadn’t noticed the older woman standing next to him. Cerrian had left as quiet as she had come in.
“We’ll conduct the interview in my study” Rath left the room not waiting for a response. Niama quickly followed after him.
Once in his study Rath placed Leto in a basinet next to his desk. He looked at the young women sitting across from him, she had blond hair but he couldn’t tell how long because it was pinned up, sparkling green eyes and full red lips. She was very attractive but she couldn’t be any older then sixteen.
“How old are you?” Rath asked
“18 M’lord” Niama answered. Rath looked at her with his eyebrow raised.
“You cared your younger siblings for you parents. What were your duties?” Rath inquired
“Well both my parents got up really early for work so I would get them up and dressed, fix them breakfast, take them to the park, give them lunch, put them down for naps, disciple if necessary. I also help my mother with cooking clean around the house” Niama told him.
“Your only concern will be the happiness and safety of my son. The salary is a five regals a week; you get one day off a week and one half a day a week. There is a separate room in the nursery that will be yours and you begin Monday” Rath explained.(1 regal = $100)
“You expect me to stay here as well?” Niama asked a bit mortified.
“Yes, I need someone that can care for my son day and night. My work schedule is not consist so I need someone that is here when I’m not. Is that going to be a problem?” Rath explained.
“No, I just need to speak to my parents first. Does Cerrian live here as well?” Niama asked
“No she usual leaves after dinner. So I’ll see you on Monday” Rath said as he got up. He picked up Leto and showed her to the door.
“I’ll have my carriage take you home” Rath offered.
“That’s alright My brother is waiting” Niama said and left.
AN: This only part of part one I couldn't finish but I just wanted to post this any way enjoy. The name Leto is from Frank Herbert's Dune.
