Author: Vegas312

Disclaimer: I do not own Roswell so please don't sue me as I'm just taking the characters for a small spin.

Disclaimer 2: I borrowed some of the lines below from the eppys "EOTW," and "Graduation." I do not own either eppy so yeah please don't sue me.

Rating: Mature for language

Coupling: Mainly M/L with a dash of the others (CC)

Summary: Everything up to Max in the City happens except we start the story before Max goes to see Liz. This is my twist and take on Max and Liz trying to redefine their relationship after everything that happened after EOTW.

AN: This is dedicated to my best buddy Mary who challenged me to write a short dreamer fic that's a bit angsty and a bit fluff. lol She challenges me to push it and I love her for that. *smooch* Luv ya babe! Btw she made the awesome banner below. :D Oh this is a two parter and part two will be posted on Saturday. Enjoy!

Part One

Couples strolled arm in arm enjoying the night air that was surprising warm for that time of the year. A few kids ran along side their parents playing tag and amber eyes looked on as a boy and girl with brunette hair chased each other under their parents’ watchful eyes. The thought that one day that could have been him and Liz crossed his mind before he closed his eyes with regret and sadness. He could no longer have thoughts like that or wish for what could have been because she had made it clear that he wasn’t what she wanted.

She wants to have children with someone normal. Someone who won’t have to look over their shoulder to see if their enemies are behind him.

The words whispered through his mind as he remembered the words that had been exchanged the night his entire world had come crashing down and he found out that everything he had believed in was nothing more than a lie…a beautiful lie that had given him hope that he one day could be one of those couples strolling hand in hand, but still a lie.

He shook his head and moved away from the light post he had been leaning against. With one more look at the two children playing tag, he started the walk across the street that would lead him to the dual entry of heaven and hell. Heaven because he could look at her and remember the love that had been between them, and hell because he would only now look at her and see the betrayal and the dreams she had shattered.

She saved your life Max. The only reason we were able to get through to you in New York was because whatever you did when you saved Liz changed her in a way that connected the two of you.

If they were so connected then how could she have done what she’d done? If she really loved him then she would have known that finding her in bed with Kyle was the last thing he had wanted to see. If that was love then he didn’t want it. Those were the words he had flung back at Isabel when she had told him what had happened when he was in New York City. Isabel had tried to tell him that maybe there was more than what he had thought he had saw, but he had ignored her not wanting to tell her that finally after months that he no longer had hope that Liz and he would be together.

Hope…how can one who had never allowed himself to believe in anything now believe in a concept like hope? Hope…it was nothing more than something mothers gave their children when the world was harsh and cruel and told them to believe in something they couldn’t see and that hope and faith would see them through such a cruel world.

Once upon a time ago when all was well he had allowed himself to believe in something and to hope that just maybe he belonged here and that the girl of his dreams loved him as much as he loved her.

You’ve put me on this pedestal.

Maybe she was right that he had put her on a pedestal and that he had been blinded to everything else. She sure as hell had knocked that pedestal down when he had caught her in bed with Kyle. Was it wrong to want to be happy? Was it so wrong to forget about everything else except for her and him? Why did it have to be so wrong?

You’re like this martyr. Instead of carrying a stick and trying to save the poor, you’re wearing your pain as if it’s a cape as a constant reminder to everyone around that your heart has been broken. God, look around you because it happens to everyone. Everyone gets his or her heart broken everyday and I’m sorry to say this, but it’s part of growing up. And Max, you’re not the only one hurting. Maybe if you stop playing the role of the wounded then you would realize that Liz is hurting too.

You’re my sister. You’re supposed to take my side. And when did you start becoming a fan of Liz?

When she saved your life despite everything that has happened to her. Despite feeling dislike from me for what she did to you, she still saved your life. She’s hurting too.

The earlier conversation he had with Isabel came back to him as he found himself staring at the bright Crashdown sign. Laughter reached his ears and he looked around to make sure no one was looking at him before he walked down the alley that led to the fire escape. He put one foot on the step and then another and pretty soon he reached the top of the ladder and pulled himself up and stepped onto the balcony.

What am I supposed to do then? Tell me since you seemed to know it all.

If the two of you can’t be friends without hurting each other then maybe you should just say goodbye and stay out of each other’s lives.

Goodbye? Just like that? It’s not that simple.

Nothing about love is ever that simple.

Each step towards the window felt heavier and heavier and he continued to walk despite the ache in his heart. Finally reaching the window he looked in the dimly lit room and saw her lying across her bed with her dark tresses hanging over the bed as she stared up at the ceiling.

“Liz,” he whispered. A whispered that contained sadness and something more…if he didn’t know better he would have thought that it was hope but hope had deserted him long ago. As he stared at her, he wanted nothing more than to forget about this idea to say goodbye and just leave and erased everything that had happened in the past two years, even all the good things. He wanted peace and to no longer wake up with her name on his lips as he dreamed of better times and of things that never would be. No more lies, no more dreams, no more hope.

What will you do? Keep on hurting the both of you forever? No one deserves that. You either fight or let go…one or the other.

I wasn’t the one to let go…she let go first!

Yeah but you choose to let go instead wrapping yourself in that cape of misery and wrongdoing.

You’re wrong.

Am I?

‘Only Isabel would come bargaining into my room and give me advice whether I want it or not,’ he sighed before he raised his fist to knock on the window, but it froze a few inches away from the glass as fear wrapped itself around him. He moved his fist to knock again and like before he stopped before actually knocking.

“I can’t do it,” he whispered and moved away from the window. Leaning against the brick wall he slide down and sat as the memories of all they had been to each other flashed through his mind. He flinched as saw again Liz and Kyle in bed with each other and as if to mock him his mind replayed the image over and over again.

“No!” He bit back a moan and cradled his head in between his hands. Breathing harshly, he stayed liked that until he regained his control over his emotions. He wouldn’t let her see what she had done to him.

Maybe Isabel was right…that he couldn’t go on like this. That he had to either forget and forgive, or just walk away. Rubbing his face before he gripped the wall behind him, he pushed up and stood up. He turned around and moved back to the window and stared at the one person who held his entire world in her hands without even trying. “How could you?” He asked knowing there would be no answers before raising his hand and knocking lightly on the window.

He watched as Liz turned over and pushed her hair out of her face before getting up to walk over to the window.

She stopped at the window and stared at him in shock. Various emotions chased across her face before she got herself under control and her face turned into a blank mask. ‘What is he doing here,’ she thought with a hint of panic even as she drunk in the sight of him with her eyes all the while happy to see that he had survived the dupes and the summit. Opening the window she moved back and watched as he climbed into her room. As he walked past her, her eyes fluttered close as she caught the scent that was so uniquely his. Taking a deep breath she braced herself for what she was sure another round of Max demanding that she tell him why she had done what she had done. No matter how much it hurt the both of them she couldn’t break her promise to Future Max and condemn them all to no future. She rather have Max think she slept with Kyle then have the end of the world on both their heads.

“Hey, how are you? I’m glad that you made it out of New York okay,” she said nervously as she watched him move around her room looking at pictures on her mirror before he turned around to stare at the bed for a brief second.

Licking his suddenly dry lips, he tried not to flinch as he stared at the place where it had happened before he turned to stare at her. Amber eyes stared into brown eyes and he moved to stand before her. The connection that had been between the two of them since that day when he had showed her who he really was hummed quietly just waiting to be set free and connect the two again.

“Max, what’s going on,” she nervously pushed a strand of hair behind her ear and avoided looking at those searching eyes. She turned to look out at the window into the dark night to keep from giving into temptation and letting herself get lost in those golden eyes of his. God all she wanted to do was tell him the truth and let everything go back to normal, well at least normal between the two of them. ‘Why must everything be so hard for us? Isn’t anything ever simple?’ She ranted silently to the cosmos and whatever higher being was out there. ‘Why can’t we be together? It’s not fair!’

Right before I came Michael had died and so had Isabel.

Tess left town when we got married and without her we weren’t strong enough.

The end of the world came.

Her shoulders stooped as the words that had shattered her dreams came back to her and remind her why she was causing all this pain. ‘We can never be together again or the end of the world will come.’ She repeated to herself as if it was a mantra and would keep away her feelings for Max. ‘Someone, anyone please help me.’

Max looked at Liz and watched, as her body became more and more tense. Whatever she was thinking it couldn’t be pleasant and he wondered if it had something to do with her actions of late. Whatever it was it wasn’t making her happy. ‘Maybe now isn’t the time to do this, but when will it ever be right to tell her goodbye. Maybe it doesn’t have to be goodbye. Maybe she’s ready to tell me the truth for once. Dare I ask?’ Not sure what to do, but knowing that he couldn’t bear to see her like this no matter that he moved to stand behind her.

Suddenly warm arms wrapped around and pulled her into a hard chest. Closing her eyes she let herself enjoy the brief moment of returning to where she belonged. Warm breath stirred the hair around her ears as Max whispered into her ears, “Liz, please…” He felt her grow taunt at his words and he realized that it didn’t matter how many times and how many different ways he asked her for the truth that she wouldn’t tell him unless she was absolutely ready to.

She waited for him to say the same thing he had been asking her for months to say. That she didn’t sleep with Kyle and that everything she’d done since then had been all a lie, but she couldn’t tell him no matter how much she wanted to. ‘Why couldn’t he just let it go?’ Her conscience replied harshly that he had loved her and still did. A rush of pleasure that he still hadn’t chosen destiny or better known as Tess filled her, and a sense of guilt that even though they couldn’t they be together that she was happy that he hadn’t gotten over so quickly. ‘What kind of person am I that I would want him to be happy rather than with someone else? What have I become?’

“Max,” she started to say, but was interrupted when he turned her around and placed his finger over her lips. Startled she looked up at him as he gave her a smile that could only be described as full of regret and lost.

“I don’t think I have the words to say to thank you for everything you’ve done for me, Michael and Isabel. Thank you for every word, every kiss, and always believing in me. My getting to know you has made me more human than you can ever know, and I know there’s a lot going on with you lately.” He shook his head at her when it looked like she would say something again. “Don’t worry I won’t ask you anymore about what happened that night. For whatever reasons for why you did what you did those reasons will stay with you.”

He leaned down and kissed her on the cheek, “Goodbye Liz Parker.” With that he moved away and started out the window while Liz stared at the placed where Max had just been standing at in shock.

She continued to stare as what he had had said circled through her mind. “Goodbye? He couldn’t have meant goodbye forever. Then why did he sound as if he wasn’t going to see me again,” she asked the silent room before rushing over to the window and climbing out.

“Max!” She called as she caught him making his way towards the ladder. “Wait!”

He paused as he turned around to see Liz rushing towards him. He looked at her curiously as she halted in front of him.

“Um I just wanted to say goodnight since you left so quickly. What did you mean by goodbye,” her eyes searched his hoping that she had misunderstood him.

“Goodbye Liz,” he pushed a strand of hair behind her ear in a gesture so familiar that she had to keep from grasping his hand and never letting go. “I think it’s better this way. No more hurt, no more lies, and no more anything.”

“No!” She shouted as panic filled her and her heart seemed to have stopped beating. “What do you mean it’s better this way? I mean why do we have to stopping seeming each other. Why can’t we go back to being friends? We were friends before.” They might no longer be together and couldn’t be together romantically, but she couldn’t lose him completely not like this.

“Liz, we were never friends,” he moved away from her not wanting to make it harder than it already was.

“No, Max we were friends before everything happened, before the shooting and you saving me,” she hurried to block his exit to the ladder. “Please, don’t do this.”

He looked at the pleading in her eyes and he didn’t know what to say. A few minutes ago it was ‘I don’t want to be with you and I want to have a normal life,’ to ‘we can be friends.’ She was a walking talking contradiction he thought as he tried really understand what was going on.

‘Then again I’ve been trying to understand her words and actions for these past months and I’m still not sure what she wants from me. Doesn’t she understand what she’s doing to me by asking this?’

“I can’t do this anymore. It’s better for the both of us if we just part ways,” he told her softly not really believing these were the words coming out of his mouth, but knowing that they had to be said.

“How is this better for the both of us? Why can’t things go back to the way they were,” she blinked furiously to keep the tears that were starting to form in her eyes back.

“Don’t you understand what you mean to me? Don’t you understand that from the first moment I laid eyes on you, you were the only person who means the most to me? When I saved you that day I wasn’t thinking about Michael or Isabel. I was thinking only of you and even now with everything that has gone on I still want to protect you, so I’m doing this for the both of us,” he stared at her and showed her all that he had been hiding since their talked had begin. Pain so intense was in his eyes that they were no longer the bright amber, but they had changed into a dark molten color.

She winced at the words that were so familiar…words that she had said to Future Max to explain to him why she couldn’t go through with his plan.

‘Don’t you know what you mean to me? Everyone else will always be second best.’

Looking at the stark emotions that covered his face, she knew it was selfish to not let him go…but she couldn’t sever that last link that was between them. She just couldn’t. She thought about the life that could have been if fate hadn’t interfered because in that other life, she and Max would be happy and wouldn’t be hurting each other so much. To not have him in her life at all was just too painful to think about and she wouldn’t think about it. They’re relationship of late was like a shattered glass with it’s jagged pieces, but it was still precariously hanging together if nothing more than the determination to keep it together.

That determination filled her and she ignored the whispering of her conscience that it was more like desperation…desperation to keep him in her life. She pushed her hair away from her face needing something to do with her hands as she moved away from the ladder. Her chin lifted challengingly and she told him harshly, “If you want to leave now without us being friends then fine, but if you do this then I will never speak to you for the rest of my life. I won’t forget that you choose to leave and break our friendship.” She knew the words coming out of her mouth didn’t make sense and that they would only cause Max more pain, but this was the only way to make him see that if he did this then there was no hope left for them.

“You won’t forget?! How dare you? I wish everyday that I could forget want you did not to me, but to us and what we had. I wish I could forget that you decided to fuck Kyle, but I can’t as I relived that experience every night when I sleep and every day when I see the kids at school giving me pity glances. I can’t believe you! It’s like you’re this different person and that girl that I fell in love with never existed,” he towered over her with barely leashed anger making his body taunt and his eyes flash.

“Is this what this is about? Me sleeping or as you said fucking Kyle? It seems like you’re the one issuing ultimatums around here,” she glared at him hoping for some kind of reaction…anything to provoke him to tell her what he really felt.

She got more than she bargained for when he replied coldly, “Oh I doubt there was any sleeping going on. I know if it had been me and you there would have been no sleeping, just exploring and making love. But apparently my taking things slow wasn’t your idea of a relationship.”

With a gasp she raised her hand to deliver a slap, but he caught her hand and used to bring her close. Something dark glimmered in his eyes, something dangerous, something potent…like desire and yearning. He pulled her close giving her the chance to break away if she wanted and when she didn’t do anything he leaned down and kissed her…not a gentle kiss, but a kiss that screamed “mine.”

Liz clenched her hands into fists trying to resist the urge to clench his shirt knowing that she couldn’t lose all control although deep down inside she was pleased that she had caused him to lose his control.

Suddenly the kiss changed from full of anger to soften to nothing more than a whisper…a goodbye. She tasted the goodbye on his lips as his anger drained away and a tear slipped from her eye and slid down her cheek. Max pulled away and looked into the tear filled eyes of the girl before him…the girl who had brought him not only pain, but had brought him happiness at one point in his life. Whether she knew or not, she made him be normal and be human. Seeing the tear that hovered on her chin, he wiped it away with his thumb before letting her go.

She turned to see him climb over the ledge and start down the stairs. “Max!”

He paused and took in the sight of her rumpled shirt and her hair flying everywhere as a breeze lifted it in the air and wondered if he would ever really be able to go through a day without thinking about her. “Yes Liz?”

“I’m sorry for what I said about everything,” she stared at him willing him to say something, do something, anything but goodbye.

“I’m sorry too,” he said before disappearing down the ladder. Now standing on the ground he leaned against the ladder suddenly feeling sick and lost. Stumbling away from the ladder he made his way slowly down the alley knowing that he was indeed in a private hell of his own. He didn’t feel free, he didn’t feel happy, and he felt if as he had lost the only home had known.

He wasn’t the only one to feel as if they had lost everything that night. Liz stared blankly out into the night not wanting to believe that he had left. ‘Now he can pursue his destiny,’ a voice taunted in her head.

“No, he loves me,” she shook her head in denial.

‘Don’t you remember that you broke his heart and his love for you?’

“You’re wrong! Wrong!” She yelled into the night.

‘No you’re wrong.’

Tears blinded her sight as she spun away desperate to get away from the taunting voice and she made her way to the window and tried to climb in only to fall in. Sprawl on the floor she curled up not carrying that her bed was a few feet away and that there was a pain in her ankle where she had caught it in the window.

“Why me? Why?!” She screamed as she hit her fist against the floor as tears continued to flow unchecked.

Title: Shattered Illusions

Author: vegas312

Disclaimer: I do not own Roswell so yeah please don’t sue me as all I’m doing is taking the characters out for a quick spin.

Rating: Mature

Coupling: M/L with a sprinkling of the other couples

Summary: Everything up to Max in the City happened except Max didn’t go to visit Liz so quickly. This is my twist on Max and Liz trying to define their new relationship.

AN: Thanks so much for the feedback and if I wasn’t so sleepy I would leave individual thank yous, but yeah my bed is calling me now. Anyway this originally started off as what was supposed to be a one parter and now a two parter. Mary (ilymeforever) challenged me to write an angst yet fluffy short dreamer fic, so what you see below is my response to her challenge. Hopefully I was able to do Max and Liz some justice as I always find them the hardest characters to write. Thanks again and enjoy.

AN 2: The songs below aren’t mine and belong to their respective owners. Yeah I don’t own anything so please don’t sue me. “Just Fine” by Christ Brown. “Bootylicious” Destiny’s Child. “Addicted” by Kelly Clarkson.

italics are either remarks from the conscience of Max/Liz or song lyrics

Part Two

She didn’t know whether minutes or hours had gone by and she didn’t really care as she cried for all that had been lost for the second time. She had broke his heart and hers once before when she pretended to sleep with Kyle, but that only been a crack in their hearts and anyone could see that the two were still in love with each other. This time she had finally succeeded in doing what Future Max had asked of her…she had truly once and all had shattered Max Evan’s heart and all his beliefs, and in the process hers had shattered as well.

With that final kiss Max had revealed that he still loved her and that he loved her enough to let her go because in the end their love wasn’t such a pure thing anymore. It had become twisted and tainted to the point that each had used it to hurt the other and that isn’t what love is supposed to be. Love is supposed to let you fly, let you soar, and finally set you free. Max had done what she could not do…he had set them both free.

‘What does being free really mean? Free of each other? Free from the pain? I don’t want to be free if it means not being around him, not hearing his voice, and not being able to remember what we shared and had once meant to each other. I rather have the pain than nothing at all. I just can’t not be with him…I can’t let go and I don’t want to let go.’

‘But he’s not yours anymore…you made the choice to let him go
,’ her mind whispered.

“I didn’t make a choice…I was left with no other options. I couldn’t let them die,” her hoarse voice filled the room. “I had no choice! None! He didn’t want to go to anyone else so I did what I had to do.”

‘You say you had no other choices, but there was one left to you that you didn’t use. You could have told the truth and let Max and the others help you. This was your decision to take everyone’s lives in your hands. When the future changed you could have told him the truth, but instead you choose to keep it to yourself,’
the voice told her harshly.

“No! That’s not true. I only did what had to be done,” she buried her face in the carpet not wanting to face up the words her mind whispered to her.

‘You can’t play God and not like the results. You can’t go breaking his heart and then doing everything possible to keep him connected to you. You took a gamble and lost…you don’t get to rollover.’

She couldn’t take this anymore, this voice, her conscience that was trying to remove the shutters that blinded her from everything that had happened as a result of her tampering with time. Over the past months she had convinced herself that she was doing what was best for everyone and that she should be pleased that her sacrifice was saving millions of lives. Plus despite pushing Max away countless times he kept coming back to her and she had secretly hoped that he would push so hard that she would be force to tell her secret.

The more she had push him back the more he had been determine to make her tell the secret…release her from her burden and she would be free to love him again as she wanted to. Instead everything had gone so horribly wrong tonight that she had panic when it looked like he was no longer going to push and pursue her. She had looked into his eyes without blinking and had uttered that horrid ultimatum. That she would never speak to him again if he cut that last link between them…their friendship.

‘We were never friends,’ his words seemed to echo in the dark room.

She flinched at the words and tried to find the familiar cape of anger that he wouldn’t fight for her, but she realized with a startling clarity that he had been fighting for her all this time. She was the one who had long ago given up on them. It had started when she left him on that day his destiny had been revealed and she had gone willingly with Future Max’s plan because a small part of her believed that Max never had belonged to her and never would.

Closing her eyes tightly to block out the truth, she was faced with memories of the truth. Memories of Max telling her what he hoped his destiny to be, Max yelling that he wouldn’t give on her, Max serenading her, and finally Max telling her goodbye for the last time.

‘I’m coming for you.’

“I want that back, I want to go to go back to simpler times. I don’t want to say goodbye. I want him back,” she bit her lip to hold the sob that was building in her throat back. Running her fingers through her hair frantically she knew that there was no going back and that she had to face reality…a reality without knowing and loving Max Evans. She choked out a small bitter laugh at the irony of the situation…she had fooled herself into believing that she had been doing just fine all these months without being able to tell him the truth and being without him.

“All these months I was never without him. Now that he’s gone what am I going to do?”

‘Do the right thing and say goodbye and finally let him go,’ the voice returned and interrupted her musings.

‘Goodbye Liz Parker,’ he had told her softly before leaving.

“Goodbye Max Evans,” she whispered raggedly as she rolled over to stare out into the darkness of the night once again for the second time that night.

A star twinkled in the night as if to say that it knew and recognized the difficulty of her situation and that it would watch over. She stared through dry eyes and soon her eyes started to close and with that she fell asleep. Several minutes later her door open slowly and voices quietly spoke as the two figures looked around the room and stopped when they saw their fallen friend. Dark blue eyes and green eyes looked at each other questioningly neither knowing what to say, but both conveying the sadness of the thought that they’re friend was in such pain.

“Alex, what are we going to do with her? She can’t go on like this,” Maria bent down and smooth Liz’s hair back away from her face and winced when she saw the tear tracks across her friend’s face. Wiping the tracks away softly she muttered, “Oh sweetie, what happened this time? Why must everything be so complicated in your life?”

Alex bent down and stared silently at the sleeping form of Liz before he slipped his arms around her. Standing up slowly so as not to drop her, he motioned for Maria to pull back the blanket on the bed. Maria quickly stood up and moved to the bed to move the blanket back as Alex laid Liz down on the bed.

“Max,” Liz muttered with such yearning on her face that Alex and Maria had to turn away. “Max,” she whispered again as a teardrop slide from her closed eyes and landed on the dark pillowcase.

Maria turned around and made a quick task of taking off Liz’s shoes before pulling the blanket up to her chin. “Sleep well Liz,” she pushed the dark hair away from Liz’s face before turning around and grabbing hold of Alex’s hand and heading towards the door.

Closing the door behind them Maria squeezed Alex’s hand and looked up with determination in her eyes with a hint of vulnerability. “Alex,” was all she said before shaking her head.

“It’s going to be okay. We’re going to fix this,” he hugged to her to his side and the two grabbed onto each other for comfort. Despite everything that had happened in the past year with all the lies, the hiding and running from the FBI and other various law enforcement agencies, and enemy aliens the two found comfort in just being with each other. They took comfort in knowing that they had their best friend to turn to when things really got strange, and that their friendship was as strong as ever. “Too bad we just can’t lock them in a closet and make the two of them work it out,” Alex joked.

“You know that’s not a bad idea at all. Too bad they didn’t toss Tess in a closet then we could have been saved all this drama. End of the world my ass,” Maria muttered vehemently. “But that’s a plan for another day. Now let’s go work on saving our friend from herself and I’ll catch you up on what’s been going on with our love struck friends.”

“End of the world? Do I even want to know?” Alex sighed knowing that it was going to be a long night indeed, but if it meant reuniting two of his friends and making his best friend smile again then he was all up for it.

“Come on I’ll explain it to you,” Maria clasped hands with Alex and with that the two left to figure out what to do next.

*****

Not caring where he was going, he had stumbled out of the alley onto the main street and just walked…anything to not let himself think about what he had done. Anything to not feel the bundle of emotions that were fighting to explode. Fighting to overcome him and leave him weak and he had already been weak enough for one night. He thought of the kiss that he had aggressively taken from Liz with guilt. ‘I shouldn’t have gotten angry. I should have known that she would push back like she always does when she’s in a corner. I should have just let it go, but she has always known how to push me.’

‘She knows how to push your buttons the same way you know how to push hers. If you really wanted to know why she’s been acting so out of character you could have pushed her until she snapped and told you everything,’
his mind whispered seductively.

“No! I couldn’t do that to her. I couldn’t use everything I know about her and make her tell me when she obviously didn’t want to. Isabel was right that it’s better this way…better that we’ve closed the chapter that was us.”

‘Better for who? Liz? Or for yourself? Nothing worth having is ever simple yet you choose the simple way out and broke things completely off. Isn’t that what you’ve been doing your whole life? If something isn’t to your liking or it becomes too complicated then you ignore it until it goes away. Remember your mom and the fire and her questions? You ignored her questions and threatened to leave. Control.. it’s your tool, your weapon when life gets too hard for you.’

‘I can’t lose control. I can’t think about it. I can’t. I won’t. I made my choice. It’s better this way.’ “It was my choice,” he whispered out loud ignoring the stares of others as not knowing how he looked with his hair all mused from where he had run his fingers through as he walked and muttered to himself. “Control is all I have. It’s all I’ll ever have.”

‘Is it? Or could you have had more?’

Flinching from the suggestion of his conscience he stopped in front of one of the many shops that lined the main street and looked at the display case of jewelry. “Maybe I wasn’t worthy of what I wanted. It doesn’t matter now since I made a clean break.“ Staring blankly at a gold heart locket his voice broke as he asked in a small and uncertain voice, “Why don’t I feel better? Making a clean break was supposed to stop the pain and everything was supposed to go back to the way it was. Why? Why hasn’t it gone away?”

Moving away from the display he turned around in circles and threw his arms up as he looked angrily up at the sky. “All my mom told ever since I was a child that even though I might not believe in you, you believe in me. That when I was at my darkest hour that I should look to You for guidance. Where are you when I need you? Huh? Isn’t this my darkest hour? Where’s your light to shine in my darkness?”

He looked away from the sky that showed nothing but the dim light of the stars. He didn’t really expect an answer…why would God speak to me? I’m not even human. I’m an alien hybrid…something that shouldn’t even exist, so why would God if He existed even pay me any attention. The one light burned out because I didn’t deserve it and because I was different.’

Spinning around on the deserted street his hand brushed up against a parking meter and a flash hit him with such intensity that he froze. Nearly falling to his knees he saw an image of himself wearing a goofy grin making the parking meters sparkle and play music as Liz watched on. Just as quick as the flash had hit him, the flash ended just as quick and he was left standing unsteadily on his feet. It wasn’t the flash that had broken him rather it was the emotion that he felt…happiness and a sense of belonging. At that moment in time he had belonged, but he couldn’t remember ever having done those things.

“What was that, and what did it mean,” he drew in a breath and slowly let go of the parking meter. He started to walk away but paused to turn around to stare at the parking meter before resuming his walk. He didn’t know what to make of what had just happened then again it had been a long night.

‘Go rest. Tomorrow is another day. You have the rest of the night to toss and turn and wrestle with your decisions of this day.’

Rest. Would he ever rest again? He didn’t know, but he knew he couldn’t wander around the rest of the night. With a sigh knowing that the nights would now be longer from here on out to maybe eternity he started walking towards home.

****

Two Weeks Later

Faint black marks appeared under sad brown eyes as they stared at her reflection in the mirror. Taking in the maroon color blouse with spaghetti straps and the dark blue jeans that ended in her black boots that added a few more inches to her height, she picks up the dainty makeup wand and ran lightly across her right cheek then to the other. She sighed and put down the wand on her dresser and turned away from the mirror that revealed more than she wanted.

‘I wonder what he’s doing. He’s probably out with Tess making her his new best friend,’ she thought sadly to herself as she sat down on her bed. ‘Oh why did I let Maria and Alex talk me into going out tonight? I rather stay in bed and eat a pint of ice cream and try not to think about Max. This is what happens when I let Maria guilt me into going out and then using Alex’s puppy dog look on me. I’m such a sucker for those pretty blue eyes of his although Max has the most gorgeous color too. God, Max! I got to stop thinking about him.’

It had been two weeks since the two of them had last spoken and now whenever both had to be in each other’s presence neither spoke and acted as if the other wasn’t in the room. Yet anyone looking close could see the two taking turns staring at each other when the other wasn’t looking. At first everyone thought that the two of them would go back to being normal and that things couldn’t get worst, but things got worst as the weeks went by and Max and Liz both continued to walk around in a trance like state…more on automatic pilot than anyone sitting in the pilot chair and flying.

‘How much longer can we go on like this? How much longer do I have to do this,’ she covered her eyes with a weary sigh. The days were getting much longer and time was going by slower and she didn’t know when if ever the pain would end.

So lost in her thoughts she didn’t hear the door open until someone cleared their throat.

Liz looked up to see green eyes staring at her in worry and she turned to her right to find dark blue eyes staring at her as well. Not wanting her friends’ sympathy or pity, she squared her shoulders and stood up with a small smile. “So where are we headed off to anyway? It’s a new place to do karaoke right? I can’t believe you gave up singing karaoke at the Pizza Pan to go somewhere new.”

Maria and Alex exchanged a look at Liz’s act of being chipper, as both knew for a fact that it was nothing more than an act. They’ve both known her since they were elementary school and could tell when she was lying. Neither one decided to call her on her lie as they hoped that what they had planned for the rest of the night would put the light that was missing from Liz’s eyes back as well as Max’s eyes. After leaving Liz sleeping a couple of weeks ago, Maria had explained to Alex all about the whole end of the world fiasco and as a result Liz’s actions of late. Alex had wanted to go to Max and explain the whole thing, but Maria had pointed out that Liz was the only one who should tell him and that all they could do was give their friends a push towards reconciliation.

As the future had already been changed the two figured that the end of the world wasn’t going to happen anytime soon or ever since Tess was still in town, so they had come up with a plan and had called the others and explained their plan. At first there had been reluctance especially from Michael and Tess, but eventually both had agreed as long as they didn’t have to do anything except put Liz and Max together in the same room. Strangely enough Isabel and Kyle had been the easiest to go along with the plan as Kyle wanted to redeem himself for his role in helping Liz break up with Max, while Isabel having observe her brother without having Liz in any part of his life knew that the two of them not having any kind of relationship wasn’t doing him any good nor Liz from what she could see. So the six friends or allies were now all doing their best to get Max and Liz in the same room and hoped that the connection between the two was so strong that it would make them deal with their problems instead of hiding them behind brittle smiles.

“Maria? Alex? Are we leaving now?” Liz looked at her friends not sure what was going on with the two of them, but knowing them as she knew them it was probably something she was going to end up disliking.

“Huh? Sure babe let’s go and have some fun. I can’t wait to test out the new karaoke machine. I hope they have some song choices because I’ve run out of song selections at the Pizza Pan,” Maria picked up Liz’s coat and handed to her before opening the door.

“Maria, you ran out of song choices because you’ve been singing there for the past two years twice a week. I’m surprised you haven’t run out of songs long before this,” Alex ducked Maria’s hand and quickly ran down the stairs.

“You can run Whitman, but remember you’re riding with me,” Maria laughed and giggled as she started to chase Alex down the stairs. “Come on Lizzie we have to get to the car before Alex calls shotgun.”

Liz laughed at their crazy antics before hurrying to catch up with Maria and Alex. Soon the three were in the car headed towards the new club and after arguing over a parking spot the three were inside the club.

The three entered the club and looked around at the eighties theme décor before heading to a table. “This is great! I’m so glad that we’re finally hanging out even if we had to use the puppy eyes to get someone out here,” Maria teased Liz who stuck her tongue out in response.

“You guys are bad for using the puppy eyes on me to get me to come out,” Liz started, but stopped as her body tensed as it felt a familiar presence enter the room. ‘Max,’ her heart whispered as she searched the room frantically looking for him. He had to be here because she felt him, but the question was what was he doing here. ‘There,’ her body joined her heart in whispering. ‘He’s there,’ she turned sharply to the entrance and froze as she saw him come in with Isabel, Tess, Michael, and was that Kyle with him. ‘What’s going on? This can’t be good.’ She felt the familiar emotion of panic rising up to choke her in questions and what ifs.

Alex and Maria looked at Liz questioningly and looked around to see what had caught her attention. Turning to face the entrance they saw their group of friends at the entrance looking around and knew that their plan was going accordingly to plan although Maria had originally voted to stuff Tess in a closet, but Alex had quickly veto that.

“Oh look there’s Michael and Isabel. I wonder what they’re doing here,” Maria said rather loudly before standing up waving frantically at her friends.

‘And the Oscar for the worst performance ever goes to Maria Deluca,’ Alex snickered at Maria’s loud and fake performance at being surprise to see the others.

Liz turned away from staring at Max to glare angrily at her two so-called friends. “What have the two of you done now? It can’t be just a coincidence that Max shows up here with the others.” Seeing the guilty looks on both their faces she quickly stood up, “I can’t believe the two of you would do this to me after knowing that Max and I aren’t talking or anything anymore.”

“Liz, we did this for you,” Alex started but was interrupted by Liz slamming her fist on the table.

“Damn it Alex! You and Maria had no right to do this to me. I’ve been making my own decisions for most of my life and I don’t need the two of you to start butting in now. Max and I are no longer in a relationship of any kind and the two of you need to start understanding this.” She grabbed her coat and started to leave when Maria jumped up and moved in front of her.

“Look babe maybe the two of us shouldn’t have invited the others to come hang out, but we’re not trying to butt in your life. We’re friends with both you and Max and we damn well don’t like being put in the middle of your drama. We just want to hang out and have fun like any other teenagers on a Saturday night. Is that too much to ask for? Does everything have to be about you and Max? Please tell me when did the two of you became the center of the world?” Maria knew from blush on Liz’s face that some of what she had said had made her feel guilty, but there was no way in hell Maria was going to let Liz run.

“I’m sorry guys. I guess I’ve been so wrapped up in myself that I haven’t been much of a best friend to the two of you. I’m sure I can get through the night without pulling my hair out and bemoaning my fate,” she gave a small laugh and looked at her friends hopeful that they weren’t mad at her.

“It’s okay Parker, we know that you still love us despite all your boyfriend drama,” Alex drawled and winked at her.

Meanwhile on the other side of the room Max was seething and glaring angrily at Isabel. He couldn’t believe that she had failed to mention that not only would Tess be here, but so would Kyle. The only reason he had come out with her to begin with was that Tess had been calling him all day and wanting to hang out and talk about destiny. Then Isabel had mentioned that Tess had told her she was coming over to hang out with Max, and that she would be leaving the two of them alone as she was going to check out a new club. Let’s just say given an option of going to a club with his sister where he could hang out in a corner or stay home and listen to Tess tell him about a destiny that were at the root of his problems, he had chosen to go out with Isabel.

So now here he stood looking at the small blonde he had been trying to avoid all night and the guy who had slept with the one girl that he had wanted his whole life. ‘Yup the night can’t get any better,’ he rolled his eyes and turned back to glare at his sister who had somehow tricked him into coming out. ‘Why does everyone insist in trying to run my life? First Liz and now Isabel, I can make my own decisions,’ he thought with frustration.

Ignoring Max’s death glare Isabel looked around the club and finally found the three she was looking for. “Oh look there’s Alex and Maria and I do believe that’s Liz. Let’s go sit over there.” She didn’t leave anyone any choice as she started heading over to join the others. Max stood in shock at the sight of Liz although he had known she was there as soon as he had stepped into the club as he had felt her presence long before Isabel had spotted her. ‘This has to be day two of the worst day of my life.’

He stood still for a few minutes and drunk in the sight of Liz with her dark locks curled around her face. ‘I’m not sure I’m strong enough to do this now. I don’t want to do this now. I can’t do this right now.’

Isabel turned around when she noticed that Max wasn’t with her and saw him standing by the entrance looking pale. She knew that forcing Max and Liz into a situation where they had to interact with each other was going to be painful for the tow, she was sorry for ripping the Band-Aid off this fresh wound, but she knew that he and Liz belonged together. She hadn’t liked it at first as she dealt with her own feelings of jealously and protectiveness towards Max, but she knew now that those two just worked together so well. They had something special and even though she wasn’t sure if she would ever experience anything like what the two of them had, she believed that they should be given the chance to make it work hence her dragging her depressed brother out to a club.

Smiling she looped her arm through her brother’s and with a pat of comfort pulled him towards the table. “Damn it Isabel,” he muttered for her ears only.

“Damn it Max,” she said cheerfully. “Smile little brother because it’s going to be a long night.”

Having reached the table everyone sat down after comically playing musical chairs to make sure Max and Liz sat next to each other. No one said anything as everyone could feel the tension build between the two until Maria stood up and clapped her hands to get the others attention. “Hey they’re getting ready to start the karaoke sign ups and it’s in groups or pairs so I’m off to sign us all up for it, so if you got a song preference you better come with me.”

Everyone stood up quickly wanting to get away from the stillness of the table and the tension that was building between Max and Liz. Muttering that Max and Liz should stay and watch the table, the others muttered about Maria’s choice of songs and who was singing with whom before taking off.

“Hell will freeze over before I sing with tone deaf Guerin,” Kyle’s voice could be hear as everyone left to go sign up.

Max and Liz realizing they were the only ones left at the table looked up to stare at each other before looking away to stare out at anything but each other. Neither knew what to say to the other and just sat thinking of the last time they had a conversation and how that had ended up.

‘What do I say?’

‘What do I say?’
Both turned at the exact same time and locked eyes before looking away again. ‘This is just great. Great conversationalist you are,’ Max sighed before standing up. “This isn’t going to work, I think maybe I should just leave and let you enjoy the rest of the night with the others.”

“No Max that’s not right. I mean sure we’re not fr..friends anymore,” she stammered out before standing up. “If we can’t at least be civil towards each other then we’re going to have a bigger problem than we already have. Maria pointed out to me earlier that you and I share the same friends and that it isn’t fair to make them choose between us. And I know for a fact that both Maria and Isabel would be disappointed if you left.” She watched him silently hoping that he would change his mind about leaving. Sure it hurt to be around him, but at the same time she couldn’t not be with him.

He thought of what she said about sharing friends and knew she was right. Stuffing his hands in his pocket he looked down at the table before looking up at her. “I guess we could go order drinks for the others since I’m sure they’re going to be thirsty with all that singing they’re about to do. I’m going to head to the bar and order.” He paused before asking, “Want to come?”

She nodded her head and waited for him to start off before following him to the bar. Catching the bartender’s attention Max quickly put in the order with Liz adding in input what Kyle, Maria, and Alex liked to drink. As the two waited for their drink order, Liz moved in front of him and fiddle with the straws and napkins. Suddenly the lights dimmed as the speakers next to the bar started shaking with the next song.

‘Heeyy, uh, ummmm, heey, oh girl, oh girl
We did everything we could do
To try to make it work (we did, we did)
Baby, you look so confused, cause it feels like, there was no way we could lose (no way, no way)
Baby, I just don't know why I can't find the things you need in me (I can't, I can't girl)
Baby, they know just know what to say, the trying to break us away from one another, but maybe their right for a change’

Max stared down at Liz as he waited for the bartender to come back with their drinks. He noticed how tightly was holding herself together and tried to move back to avoid making her any more uncomfortable instead someone bumped into him sending him flying forward. Pushing his arms out to avoid falling into Liz, both his arms were enclosing Liz grasping onto the bar, as his chest was an inch from her back.

‘I think, God will give you someone,
Much better than me, trust me
Your life will be O.K. it will be alright.
You'll be just fine (just fine, just fine)’

“Sorry about that,” his voice tickled her ear.

Liz’s breath caught in her throat as she felt Max’s body an inch from hers before moving away before giving into temptation. ‘It’s going to be a long night, but I can do it. I can do it.’ As Liz contemplated what to do next the bartender came back with their drinks and Max dug out his wallet and paid for the drinks. He leaned over Liz to hand the money and Liz turned around to protest that Max didn’t have pay for all the drinks. Her hair swung past his face carrying the scent of not the vanilla that he had long associated with her, but something that smelled of cherries.

‘I know that baby we would disagree constantly on the basic things (we did, we did)
You thought that there was someone else, all along (no way, no way)
Baby I want to decide to stay right by your side
Baby, they know just what to say.
They wanna keep us away from one another
But Maybe they're right for a change’

He saw the look on her face and knew she was going to protest him buying her drink. “I’m sure the others won’t mind me paying for the drinks this round and someone else can do it next round. We should probably head back to our seats since I believe they’re going to start doing the karaoke soon.” He reached around her to grab the drink tray and she briefly closed her eyes at the heat that seemed to radiant from him.

Nodding her head she turned around to grab straws and napkins and brushed against him before hurrying off to the table. “It’s going to be a long night,” Max let out the breath that he had been holding before heading off to the table.

‘I think, God will give you someone,
Much better than me, trust me
Your life will be O.K. (O.K.), alright (alright), just fine (just fine)’

Arriving back at the table they found that everyone had returned except Maria, Alex, and Kyle. Everyone quickly got their drink and Liz opened her mouth to ask where the others were at but before she could the music stopped and a guy appeared on the stage.

“Welcome. Welcome to our first karaoke contest at Club Eternity. First up is a group of friends who I must say are brave for singing this song, but I do believe we’re going to be entertain that’s for sure. Here’s Maria, Alex, and Kyle singing “Bootylicious by Destiny’s Child.” He moved off the stage as the music started playing and the three appeared on the stage.

“Oh no! How in the world did Maria get Alex and Kyle to do this song with her,” Liz laughed as she turned around to watch the three shake their respective butts before turning around to grab a microphone.

‘Alex
Can you handle this
Kyle
Can you handle this
Maria
Can you handle this
I don't think they can handle this whoooo,
’ Maria started singing before moving back to let Kyle in front of her.

‘Better move
Cause we've arrived
Lookin' sexy
Lookin' fly
Baddest chick
Chick inside
Dj Jam tonight
Spotted me
A tender thang
There you are
Come on baby
Don't you wanna
Dance with me
Can you handle me,
’ Kyle swerved his hips as he sung before moving out of the way to let Alex get in front.

Alex grinned and winked at the crowd before singing the next line, “You gotta do much better
If you're gonna dance with me tonight
You gotta work your jelly
If you're gonna dance with me tonight
Read my lips carefully, if you like what you see
Move, groove, prove you can hang with me
By the looks I got you shook up and scared of me
Buckle your seatbelt, it's time for takeoff.’

Then the three started shaking their hips as they sung the last hook, “I don't think you're ready for this jelly
I don't think you're ready for this jelly
I don't think you're ready for this
'cause my body's too bootylicious for ya babe.”

Soon the three were done and left the stage after bowing as the audience cheered and whistled. “Oh my God! I can’t believe they actually did the song. I didn’t think they would do it after I dare to it,” Isabel covered her mouth to keep the laughter in. “Although I must say the hip shaking they had going on was an added bonus.” A giggle broke out and pretty soon all of them were laughing.

“I’m afraid to ask, but what did the rest of you sign up for,” Liz asked as the host of the contest came back on stage.

Max leaned forward curious now to know what the others were going to sing not knowing that he was going to wish pretty soon that he had gone with the others to pick out songs and partners. He had to admit that tonight had turned out to be fun so far even with all the underlying currents that were running between him and Liz.

“Alright much thanks to our three brave contestants who got up here and had fun with it. Now onto a different type of song…we got a duet even though the song isn’t written that way so it should be interesting to see. Next up singing “Addicted” by Kelly Clarkson are Max and Liz,” he clapped. “Come on up here!”

“What did he just say,” Liz asked desperately wishing that she had given into the urge earlier to go home.

“No,” Max stated bluntly. “There’s no way I’m getting up there to sing that song. No way!”

Max and Liz glared at their respective friends who all turned away as the host repeated for Max and Liz to come on stage.

“The both of you are going have to get up there otherwise I hear they put a spotlight on the people who try to back out of singing,” Isabel turned back to look back and forth between the two of them while lying without blinking. “I’m sorry but you’re going have to do it if we don’t everyone staring at us for the rest of the night. Then again after Maria, Kyle, and Alex’s performance I’m sure we’ll get stares for the rest of the night.”

Liz stared at the stage in resignation before standing up and with a final glare at her former friends she started walking towards the stage. “I can’t believe they did this to me, I’m so going to get them back for this,” she muttered to herself. “This is just great, I’m going to be standing up there by myself while half the town looks on. Boy does this sounds familiar or what.”

Before she started up the stairs that led to the stage a hand grabbed hold of her arm. She knew who it was before he spoke and she looked back at Max with a question in her eyes. “Um there’s no point in just you embarrassing yourself, so we might as well do it together,” he stuff his hands in his pockets and nodded to the stage as the music started playing.

“Are you sure about this? I know this isn’t your thing,” she pointed to the stage.

“I’m sure,” he nodded and waited for her to get on the stage.

She searched his eyes before getting on the stage and grabbing a microphone. ‘Well at least Maria didn’t sing me up for ‘I will survive’ song she’s always singing,’ she gave a brief smile at the thought. ‘Still I’m up here singing a song about being addicted to some guy. And ladies and gentlemen the irony keeps coming,’ she closed off her thoughts and looked to see Max standing nervously beside her. Seeing how pale he was starting to look she turned him to look at her and said quietly, “It’s going to be okay. Whenever I have to do a speech or something I just focus on one person in the audience and it makes it less painful,” she told him quietly.

Max nodded his head and he looked around the audience and swallowed nervously. ‘Okay looking out there for someone isn’t going to work,’ he turned back to see Liz still staring at him as she lifted up the microphone and started singing as the music played.

‘It’s like you’re a drug
It’s like you’re a demon I can’t face down
It’s like I’m stuck
It’s like I’m running from you all the time
And I know I let
You have all the power
It’s like the only company I seek
Is misery all around’

Focusing on her deep brown eyes he felt more confident as he felt the emotion behind the song.

“It’s like you’re a leach
Sucking the life from me
It’s like I can’t breathe
Without you inside of me
And I know I let you
Have all the power
And I realize I’m never gonna
Quit you over time
,” his deep voice joined his.

She felt something come over her as his voice joined hers and she moved closer to him as she swayed to the song.

“It’s like I can’t breathe
It’s like I can’t see anything
Nothing but you
I’m addicted to you
It’s like I can’t think
Without you interrupting me
In my thoughts
In my dreams
You’ve taken over me
It’s like I’m not me
It’s like I’m not me”

Everything they had gone through flashed through his mind and with those flashes came the emotions. Love, hate, want, and need swept through him as he unconsciously moved closer to her aligning his body to sway in rhythm with hers. He wasn’t sure how, but this small fragile looking young woman had captured him mind, body and soul. She had broke his heart and broke him in every way that a person who had power over another to do. Frankly he no longer cared know why she went about breaking nor did it matter. Nothing mattered anymore because all he wanted was to stamped himself upon her soul as she had done to his.

“It’s like I’m lost
It’s like I’m giving up slowly
It’s like you’re a ghost
That’s haunting me
Leave me alone
And I know these voices in
My head are mine alone
And I know I’ll never change my ways
If I don’t give you up now”

Not caring that her body seemed to have a mind of it’s own as she stared into his eyes that seemed to glow brightly. All she knew was that nothing this good could be so wrong. She didn’t think about destiny and about futures that no longer existed or could exist, she didn’t think at all as her body was flooded with emotions that she had long buried. She wanted. She needed. She burned. She loved. All she wanted was wrapped in one person…Max Evans and he was standing right in front of her looking at her the way she knew she had to be looking at him.

“I’m hooked on you
I need a fix, I can’t take it
Just one more hit
I promise I can deal with it
I’ll handle it, quit it
Just one more time, then that’s it
Just a little bit more to get me through this”

She dropped the microphone and he dropped his as the music ended neither caring or daring to remember where they were. Both breathe harshly as they stared at each other and moved that last step that had their bodies brushing against each other. In a move that had come naturally to them the first time they had kissed, she reached up as he pulled her closer and he dipped his head. No words were exchanged as they continued to stare not knowing that the crowd was staring at them in silent disbelief. They no longer cared about what had kept them apart as need and want and love overcame all barriers they had constructed between them. He moved slowly before swooping in and kissing her as if there was no tomorrow, no todays, no present.

Flashes hit them both as their connection eagerly opened and showed them exactly what they each had missed so much. Flashes from when they first met to Max healing Liz to Max kidnapping Liz on her blind date and making the parking meters sparkle to Liz’s visitor from the future and everything that had happened up to that very moment of them kissing on the stage.

Anyone sitting up front would later swear that they had felt as if a heatwave had hit them as the temperature in the room seemed to increase. The more the two kissed and the more heated their embrace came the more the temperature in the room became hotter.

“We can’t let them stay up there like that,” Michael frowned at his normally quiet friend getting very affectionate in front of a group of people he didn’t know. “Iz, you’re going have to do something otherwise those two are going to start glowing or something.”

“I think they’re going to do more than glow,” Maria smirked.

“Maria!"

“Well they are,” Maria tossed defiantly at her boyfriend and ignored his glare.

Isabel laughed before waving her hand, “Maybe we should just cool them off.” Suddenly the water sprinklers in the roof went off drenching the customers and the couple still kissing on the stage.

Feeling water pour on him, Max shivered and pulled back from Liz. He smiled in satisfaction at Liz’s swollen lips. She smiled at him as he pushed her wet curls away from her hair and rested his forehead upon hers. “Liz,” he started but stopped when she laid her fingers on his lips to forestall him.

“Max, how about we save the heavy conversation for when we’re not wet and standing in front of an audience,” she reached up and pushed his hair away from his eyes.

“Alright I think we can do that, but I want to say just one thing.”

“What’s that Mr. Evans,” she teased.

“I’ve missed you Liz Parker.”

“I’ve missed you too.”

“Good. How about we get out of here,” he held his hand out to her as he had done once before on a different occasion but it meant no less now than it had did than.

Nodding her head she slipped her hand in his and the two made their way off the stage and walked out of the club to start that conversation and just maybe the beginning of the rest of their lives.

The End
