Title: We Are Family

Disclaimer: I don’t own Roswell or the characters I’m just borrowing them. This idea comes from the movie The Family Stone, which I also don’t own.
Rating: ADULT
Category: M/L, Ma/Ma, M/M
Summer: It’s Christmas for the Evans family, how will they react when they’re brother brings home his eccentric girlfriend who he’s considering making a permanent part of their quiet, close family?

Evan’s Family:
Phillip and Dianne (Parents),
Zan – oldest son and married to Ava (27)
Michael – second oldest (25)
Isabel and Max - twins (22)

One

“The girl has no talent, I don’t know why anyone else can’t see it,” Maria tells the person she is talking to on her latest model nokia phone.

She approaches her boyfriend who is looking at two winter hats trying to decide which one to buy. One is black and the other is red.

“Is that for Ava?” She asks.

“Yeah,” he nods and smiles.

“Get the black,” she tells him before turning back to her phone conversation.

“Seriously, they really should listen to me. I am the best in the business,” she brags.

***

“Hello?” Zan calls out as he walks through the front door of family home.

“Mum?” He calls out.

“In here sweetie,” Dianne Evans replies.

“Hey,” Zan smiles when he enters the kitchen and finds his mother cooking away. Ava is following closely behind with an armful of presents.

Dianne greets her son and daughter in law with a kiss.

“Is Max home yet?” Zan wonders.

Dianne shakes her head. “Not yet, he called earlier and said they missed their earlier flight so they were getting on a later one,” she informs him.

Zan and Ava share a look before rolling their eyes. Both knowing that the only reason their anal brother Max would miss his flight is because of his new girlfriend.

“What?” Dianna asks.

“Wait till you meet her Dianne,” Ava says.

“Oh she can’t be that bad,” Dianne laughs the comment off.

Zan shakes his head. “Just you wait, you’re going to hate her,” he tells her.

The entire Evans family was shocked when they found out that Max was bringing home his girlfriend for the holiday. Christmas was very special and a big event in the Evans family and was usually reserved for family or almost family only.

Even Ava hadn’t been welcomed to Christmas until she had been dating Zan for close to three years.

“Where’s Dad?” Zan asks looking around and noticing his father’s absence.

“He just went out to grab some last minute things,” She replies.

***

Isabel smiles when she pulls her small rental car into the driveway of her family home. God did she miss this place.

She pulls out her overstuffed duffel bag and throws it over her shoulder before pulling out the clothes basket which was full of more clothes, and then shoves the bag full of presents on top. She pushed the weight around trying to find a spare hand to shut the car door but she isn’t having any luck.

“God three brothers and do you think any of them are around when you need them,” she mumbles as she drops the washing basket.

“I’m home,” she calls out as she enters the house.

“In here,” Dianne yells back.

Dianne, Zan, and Ava stand to greet Isabel as she makes her way into the kitchen.

“It’s so good to be home,” she tells them as she hugs her mother.

“How’s college?” Zan asks once Isabel settles into a seat at the table with them, a cup of hot coffee in hand.

“Good,” Isabel grins; although she misses Roswell and her family, she loved school in Boston.

“Wow, look at you Ava.” Isabel grins as she finally notices the round bump her sister in law is carrying. “You look great,” she adds.

Ava blushes “Thank you.”

“Is Max or Michael home yet?” Isabel asks.

Dianne shakes her head. “No, Max and his friend should be arriving this afternoon and I have no idea what Michael is doing,” Dianne informs them.

“Great,” Isabel smiles and joins the others at the table. “So what’s been happening?” She asks happily.

***

Phillip rushes in the door and heads straight to the kitchen. The driveway was already full of cars and he couldn’t wait to see his family. Even though Zan and Ava lived in Santa Fe, they still weren’t close enough and all their other children lived in different states.

“Merry Christmas,” he smiles as he walks into the kitchen.

Isabel was the first out of her seat to hug her daddy. She had been a daddy’s girl most of her life especially since she was the only daughter.

“Daddy,” she squeals “Merry Christmas.”

Ava was next before Phillip pulled Zan into a manly hug and slaps his back.

“I love Christmas,” he tells them and they all break out laughing.

***

“So your parents know I’m coming right?” Maria asks Max as they approach his family home.

Max smiles over at his girlfriend and nods. It had been a big decision to ask her to come home with him for Christmas. They have been dating for a little over six months and he had only just agreed to move in with her after Christmas.

Max was extremely close to his family and their opinion of Maria meant a lot to him. He wasn’t sure if what he felt for her was love but it was the closest thing he had ever felt for any one before.

“Of course,” he tells her.

Maria looks around with interest when Max pulls their rental car up out the front of a beautiful two story house. Maria smirks when she notices the white picket fence and the perfect rose garden.

“So this is Roswell?” She says.

“Yep,” Max nods. “This is Roswell.”

The place was a total contradiction to the home she had grown up in with her half sister Liz, her mother, and stepfather.

Max pulls the car into the driveway and hops out.

When the Evans, who was still sitting in the kitchen, heard the car pull up, they all rush to the window to peer outside.

“It’s them,” Isabel informs them all.

Maria sits in the car as Max unloads their luggage and presents onto the porch waiting for him to open her door for her.

“Maybe I should go help,” Zan suggests as he watches Max struggle with the two very large suitcases.

“Why does she have so much stuff?” Isabel asks.

Ava giggles and then bites her tongue. She knows for a fact that Isabel is going to hate Maria’s guts and she can’t wait to see how the whole thing unfolds.

“Max!” Zan calls as he rushes out of the house to help.

“Zan!” Max grins when he sees his brother.

They share a hug before Zan picks up a couple of the suitcases and carries them into the house.

Max approaches Maria’s door and opens it for her. Maria accepts his help to get out of the car, the whole time her eyes were looking around and taking everything in. From the perfect garden to the intricate lights that are hanging.

She runs her hands over her expensive outfit in an effort to get out some of the creases, and checks the pathway before she takes a step in her expensive pumps.

“You ready?” Max asks.

Maria offers him a huge smile. “Of course, I can’t wait to meet everyone,” she informs him.

“Here goes nothing,” Max mumbles as he leads them up the porch and into the Evan’s home.

Two

The Evans family minus Michael are all lined up at the stairs as they wait for Max and Maria to enter the house.

As soon as they are through the front door though Isabel rushes into her brother’s arms. It has been over six months since she has seen him and she misses him so much.

“Max!” Isabel squeals.

“Iz!” He cries with just as much enthusiasm before picking her up and hugging her tightly. Being twins Max and Isabel have always been the closest of the siblings; it was hard to explain the connection you had with someone that you shared womb with for almost nine months.

“God it’s good to see you,” Max tells her when he set her down on the ground.

“You too,” she smiles.

Dianne and Phillip are next to hug Max before Ava steps forward last. Maria is standing by watching the whole thing unfold and for the first time since agreeing to come home with Max for Christmas she is feeling nervous, worried that they might not like her. It’s obvious how close they all are, similar to her and her own sister.

Max steps back after all the hugs are out of the way. “Every one,” he smiles as he takes Maria’s hand. “This is Maria.”

The family all smile. “Maria this is my mum Dianne, my father Phillip,” Max introduces.

“It’s so wonderful to meet you,” Maria tells them as she steps forward and instead of taking the offered hand, she hugs them instead.

Dianne tenses in surprise and tries to ignore Ava’s snort.

“You remember Zan and Ava.”

“Of course,” Maria grins and steps forward to hug Ava who tries her best to avoid her.

“Uhg,” she complains as Maria presses herself against her rounding stomach.

“Sorry,” Maria replies.

“Hi Zan,” she waves. Zan is standing safely behind Ava where he knows Maria can’t get to him.

“And this,” Max points to Isabel. “Is my twin sister Isabel.”

“Wow,” Maria grins. “Max never stops talking about you; it’s so awesome to finally meet you.”

Isabel tenses as Maria flings her arms around her. She shoots a look at Max over her shoulder but he just shrugs and smiles. “I can tell we’re going to be the best of friends,” Maria continues on after pulling back.

“Yeah,” Isabel says with a fake smile.

“And where’s Michael?” Maria asks looking around. “I thought you said he would be here too Max?”

“Michael hasn’t arrived yet,” Phillip informs her.

“Oh ok.”

“How about I show you where you’ll be sleeping,” Dianne suggests.

“That would be great,” Maria smiles and follows her up the stairs with Max trailing behind.

Once she was out of earshot Isabel turns to her father, Zan and Ava with wide eyes.

“Is she for real?” She whispers.

Ava bursts out laughing knowing that Isabel was going to say that.

“I’m afraid so,” Zan replies.

Up the stairs, Dianne leads Maria into Max’s bedroom and Max follows and places Maria’s suitcases on the ground next to the bed.

“You’ll be staying in Max’s room,” Dianne says.

“Wow,” Maria smiles as she looks around at all of Max’s things. “Cool room babe,” she says.

“Um thanks,” Max blushes. The room hasn’t changed at all since he was sixteen.

“Max you can put your things in Michael’s room, your father has already set up the fold out bed for you in there,” Dianne informs her son.

“Thanks Ma,” Max smiles “I’ll just go grab my stuff.”

“Oh Max doesn’t have to stay with Michael.” Maria objects “I don’t mind sharing,” she smiles politely.

Dianne looks at her a little shocked. “It’s fine,” she tells her. “I’ll leave you two to get settled in,” she adds then.

A few minutes later Max returns and pokes his head through the door “Everything ok?” He asks.

“Yeah,” Maria frowns.

Max can tell right away that she’s lying so he enters the room and hugs his girlfriend to his chest. “It’s a little overwhelming isn’t it?”

“It’s not that,” she shakes her head. “Why are you sleeping in your brother’s room?” She asks.

“My parents just have a thing about us not sleeping with out partners under their roof until we’re engaged or married,” he explains to her not seeing what the big deal is. He was the one who would be sleeping on a fold out bed in his brother’s room after all.

“That’s so pre-historic,” she objects in her typical Maria like fashion.

Max frowns “That might be so but this is their house and I have to respect their rules,” he tells her.

Maria sighs and nods.

“I’m going to head downstairs and have a coffee you want to come?” He asks.

“Um I’m just going to call Liz first and then I’ll come down,” she replies.

“Ok,” he nods and leaves.

Max knew that Maria was close to her sister Liz. So far he hadn’t gotten the opportunity to meet her although he’s seen a lot of pictures of her and Maria when they were growing up. As far as he knew, Liz liked to travel and has been abroad for the past year.

Once Max is gone, Maria sits on the bed and pulls her cell phone out to dial Liz.

“Hey,” Liz says when she answers.

“Hey sis,” Maria sighs.

“Are you there yet?” Liz asks.

“Yeah.”

“How is it? What are they like?” Liz asks. Liz understood better than anyone what Maria could be like she grew up with her after all.

“They’re ok,” Maria shrugs. “They’re making us sleep in separate rooms,” she snorts then.

“Ria a lot of people are like that. Mum and Dad would be the same,” Liz points out.

“Which is why I don’t go home,” Maria responds.

“Just have a good time and be…”

“I’m being myself,” Maria interrupts.

“That not what I was going to say,” Liz says “Just be the person Max loves,” Liz amends.

“Ok.”

“What are you doing for Christmas anyway? I never would have agreed to come if I had known you were going to be home.”

Liz sighs. She had come home unexpectedly to surprise her family for Christmas only to end up being the one surprised. Her father was taking her mother on a romantic trip since Maria had plans to go to Max’s families for Christmas.

“I’ll be fine,” Liz says. “I’ll talk to you later.”

“Bye Lizzie.”

“Bye,” Liz replies before she hangs up.

***

Michael thanks the guy who gave him a lift as he hops out of the car and heads down Murray Lane. He hitchhiked from Las Cruses after getting sick of the bus he had taken from Vermont.

“Damn Christmas,” he mumbles under his breath.

He notices all the cars in the driveway as he reaches his family home and smiles. His sister and brothers were all home, he couldn’t wait to see them, and he hadn’t been home since last Christmas.

He opens the door and grins when his nostrils fill with the smells of his mothers cooking.

He places his things down and walks into the kitchen.

His whole family is sitting at the table sipping on coffee, talking, and laughing. They don’t notice him until Ava turns and yelps in surprise.

“Michael!”

The whole family jump to their feet to greet Michael, the prodigal son.

After greeting each member of his family, he backs out of the kitchen to take his bag to his room and to grab a much-needed shower. He doesn’t pay attention to where he’s going as he takes the stairs three at a time with his long powerful legs and he doesn’t see Maria coming out of Max’s room until it’s too late.

“AHH,” she cries out as she falls to the floor with a thud, Michael landing on top of her.

Michael arches an eyebrow at her “Who the hell are you?” He asks.

“Would you get off me you big doofus?” She cries.

The entire Evans family who heard Maria’s cry came rushing out of the kitchen to see what is happening. When Max sees that Maria is on the ground he rushes up the stairs.

Michael gets off the blonde and reluctantly helps her stand, “You ok?” He asks.

Maria looks over her expensive clothes and then down to her feet. That’s when she notices the heel has broken off her expensive pumps.

“Maria are you ok?” Max asks as he rushes to her side.

Maria holds the shoe up so Max can see. “He broke my shoe,” she cries like the world is about to end.

“I’m sure it was an accident,” Max replies.

“Of course it was,” Michael says. “Who the hell is she anyway?” He asks again.

“Oh shit, sorry Mike. This is my girlfriend Maria. Maria this is Michael my brother,” Max introduces.

“It’s nice to meet you Michael but next time you should probably watch where you’re going,” Maria says.

“You too,” Michael says stiffly as he eyes the girl in front of him. “Sorry about your shoe,” he says.

Maria sighs, “Its ok, I’m sure they can be fixed and I have another pair that will go with this outfit,” she informs him.

Michael bites back a laugh. “Well that’s a load off my mind, I’ll be able to sleep tonight now,” he says sarcastically before picking up his fallen duffel bag and walking into his room.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, so many of you loved the movie, i just hope i don't disapoint you :D

Three

Dinner is a lively event that night. Dianne and Phillip sit back and enjoy the sight of all their children under the one roof again, chatting and catching up on each other’s life.

“So Max how did you and Maria meet?” Isabel asks her brother.

“Wow that’s quiet a story Isabel,” Maria speaks up before Max gets the chance.

Isabel looks between her brother and Maria and raises a questioning eyebrow. So far, Maria had barely let Max get a word in edgewise. Every time some one would ask him about his life in New York Maria would speak up before him.

“It’s not that interesting,” Max tells Maria.

“Of course it is,” she smiles.

“You see I work for Crash ’47 Records,” she tells them excitedly and waits for them to all ooh and ahh, which they don’t.

“Who are they?” Michael asks.

“A very up and coming record company in New York,” she tells him.

“Have you met Metallica?” He asks.

Maria frowns. “Um no,” she says.

“Anyway,” she continues. “There’s this little coffee shop around the corner which I go to all the time, they make the best caramel latte and frappachinos,” she informs them all.

Isabel does her best not to roll her eyes at the exaggerated story and wonders when the exciting part will actually start.

“So one day I’m running late, I had an exclusive meeting with an up and coming artist so I’m wearing my best channelle suit,” she informs.

“Is there a point to this story somewhere?” Michael interrupts.

“Michael,” Max says.

“What?” Michael asks. “I don’t need to know this crap,” he says.

Maria shifts in her seat. “Well basically Max knocked me flying on my way out, I got my latte all over my jacket and of course it was ruined,” she smiles. “I must have yelled at him for five minutes before I settled down and Max just smiled at me and offered to pay for it to be dry cleaned, just one smile and I was a goner.”

The occupants at the table share a look at the story. No one knew quite what to say.

“That’s nice,” Dianne finally speaks up. “Would anyone like dessert?” She asks.

“Yes please,” they all chorus.

***

“What are we going to do tonight?” Isabel asks her family as they all work to clean up the kitchen.

“Don’t know, video?” Michael suggests with a shrug.

“Lets go ice skating,” Isabel suggests.

“I don’t know Iz,” Zan says knowing it probably wouldn’t be wise for Ava.

“Oh come on it will be great and I’ll let you hold my hand,” Ava encourages.

“Ok,” he relents with a smile.

“Max?” Isabel asks. It was one of Max and Isabel favourite Christmas past times. Every year they would go ice-skating together and share a mug of hot chocolate.

“Sounds great,” he smiles before turning to Maria who is doing her best not to frown.

“Well if we’re going let’s go now,” Michael tells them.

They all part to get dressed into some warmer clothes.

“You can skate right?” Max checks with Maria as they walk up the stairs. Maria was born and raised in New York and he assumed her and Liz spent time skating in Central Park as children.

“Not really,” Maria says.

“Oh, well that’s ok I’ll teach you,” Max smiles.

Maria sighs, “I think I’ll sit this one out, just watch,” she tells him.

“Oh come on it will be fun,” Max says.

“No really Max it’s fine, it’s a little too high schoolie for me.”

Max frowns. “Oh,” he says.

He should have known that someone like Maria who wore expensive designer shoes and outfits wouldn’t want to spend her time skating around on some ice. Without another word Max made his way into Michael’s bedroom to replace his pants and sweater with a pair of jeans and a weatherproof jacket.

Isabel was coming out of her own room when Maria walked out of Max’s room, changed and ready to watch everyone skating. Isabel stopped and bit her lip to stop herself from laughing when she caught sight of Maria. For a girl who lived in New York she apparently didn’t know very much about the cold weather.

“You aren't wearing that are you?” Isabel asks her.

“I was going to, is there something wrong?” Maria replies looking down at her outfit. She thought it was very nice and complimented her to perfection unlike Isabel’s jeans and heavy plain jacket.

Max made his way out of the room when he heard his sister and Maria; he also stopped short when he saw what Maria was wearing. She was wearing a pair of extremely tight and low cut jeans, a pair of fluffy boots over the outside of them and a fluffy jumper that barely covered her stomach.

“Um Maria I know it’s not as cold in Roswell as it is in New York but I think you’ll at least need a jacket,” Max tells her.

“Why? You’re right it isn’t cold,” she replies

“We’re going to be near ice,” Isabel points out all the while wondering where her brother found this crazy chick. Isabel decided then that it was like watching New York Barbie slumming it in Roswell.

“It’s just a different kind of cold in the dessert, one moment you’ll think its okay but when it hits it’s like ice,” Max tries to explain.

Maria sighs, “Fine I’ll grab a jacket.”

Everyone is waiting down stairs dressed in their old jeans and warm clothes when Maria struts down the stairs in her out fit.

Ava’s eyes go wide and Michael rolls his eyes before turning and walking out of the house towards the car.

“Will this be suitable?” Maria asks Max holding up her leather jacket for inspection.

Max nods. “It will do,” he tells her.

***

Maria sighs as she watches the Evans siblings and Ava skating around on the makeshift ice rink. They all looked so happy and she remembered when her and Liz were younger and used to do things like that.

They had been there for an hour and even though Max kept coming over to check that she was all right Maria was bored out of her mind. It was also very apparent that the Evan’s family weren’t warming to her like she hoped.

Maria pulls out her cell phone and hits the speed dial for her sturdy sister.

“How’s it going?” Liz asks.

“Not so good,” Maria sighs. “Max’s twin sister keeps looking at me like I’m an alien and the rest of his family have barely said a word. Oh except Michael, who has already knocked me over, broke one of my most expensive pairs of shoes, and told me to shut up.”

Liz sighs, “Ria, I’m sure it’s not as bad as you think.”

“Of course it is, they hate me,” Maria pouts.

“You have to try to get to know them,” Liz tells her.

“Why don’t you come here?” Maria says then. “It would be a great opportunity for you to meet Max and having someone on my side would really help.”

“I don’t think so,” Liz replies.

“Oh Lizzie please,” Maria cries.

“Maria I can’t just show up, that’s rude,” Liz argues. She knows eventually she will give in; Maria will give her no choice. She will hound Liz until she cracks.

“No it isn’t we’ll just explain that you got back into town and I didn’t want you to spend Christmas alone,” Maria says happily liking her idea more by the second. No one got her better than her sister Liz did, and if anyone could convince the Evans family that she was perfect for their son it would be Liz.

“Maria,” Liz whines.

“Call me back and let me know what time your flight gets in,” Maria instructs.

“Maria no,” Liz cries but her pleas aren’t heard because before Liz knows what is happening Maria has snapped her phone shut.

“Hey who was that?” Max asks.

“Liz,” Maria smiles standing up to kiss Max.

“Your nose is cold,” she smiles when she pulls back.

Max blushes and rubs his nose. “So the mysterious Liz, when am I going to meet her?” He wonders.

“Sooner that you think,” Maria smiles.

***

Isabel pulls up on her skates next to where Zan and Ava are leaning against the wall and gazes over at her twin and Maria.

“What does he see in her?” She asks Zan.

Michael chooses that moment to join them too, just in time to hear Isabel’s question.

“She’s hot,” he tells her.

Isabel rolls her eyes at her brother. Maria was gorgeous but she talked too much, was stuck up and a little too highly strung as far she was concerned.

“She’s beautiful but she’s not Max’s type,” Zan agreed voicing exactly what Isabel was thinking.

“We can all see it so why can’t he?” Isabel asks.

“He will,” Zan said looking at Ava. “The perfect girl will come around one day and he’ll know, but until then we should all just try to be nice, he seems to like her,” he told his two younger siblings.

“I won’t go out of my way to pick a fight,” Isabel agreed but if Max asked her opinion then she would tell him the truth.

Michael shrugged as he finally stopped staring at Maria and Max.

“As long as she stays out of my way,” he said before he skated off.

Four

The next morning it was almost ten AM when Maria crawled out of bed and made her way into the Evans’ family kitchen. Little did she know that the entire family had been up since seven, and Dianne and Isabel had spent all morning in the kitchen.

“You’re up,” Max smiled when she entered.

Maria looked around embarrassed when she realised everyone was dressed and she was wearing a pair of satin pyjama pants and matching top.

“Um morning everyone,” she said.

“Good morning,” Dianne greeted politely.

Maria looked at Max then, “Coffee?” She asked.

Max looked over at the coffee pot which was now empty. “I’ll put some on for you,” he said.

“I’m sorry I didn’t realise how late it was,” she whispered to Max as he leaned in and hugged her.

“That’s ok,” he said.

“Now you’re up you can help us,” Max suggested then.

“Huh?” Maria frowned.

“We’re cooking for tomorrow,” Max told her gesturing to the biscuits he was decorating on the table.

Maria looked around and noticed that there was a lot of cooking going on. Her frown deepened. One thing Maria didn’t do was cook. She never had. The only way she survived in the past was because her mother could cook, then Liz and most recently Max. Other than that, she lived on takeaway.

“I’m not very good in the kitchen,” she apologised as she slid into a seat at the table while Max put on a fresh pot of coffee for her.

“Surprise, surprise,” Isabel mumbled but everyone in the room heard her.

“Well you can help Max decorate the cookies,” Dianne spoke up and suggested.

Maria’s phone began ringing then in her purse. She looked around for it and rummaged through it until she pulled it out. She smiled when she saw it was Liz. Standing up she excused herself from the kitchen to talk to her sister.

“Hey,” she greeted.

“Hi,” Liz replied.

“So what time are you getting here?” she asked.

“Maria I really think this is a bad idea,” Liz said.

“Not it’s not, its fine, so?”

“Have you even asked Max yet?” Liz asked guessing she hadn’t said a word to her unsuspecting boyfriend.

“No but I will,” she promised.

“Maria,” Liz whined.

“Did you book it or not?” Maria asked.

“I’m at the airport now, I’ll get in at four,” Liz sighed.

Maria squealed. “Yay.”

“Go and tell Max right now and you better organise a hotel room for me,” Liz ordered then.

“Ok, ok I’ll go now. I’m just so excited, so excited I’m going to make sure we have our traditional Christmas potatoes.”

“Maria no,” Liz objected immediately, she knew what a nightmare her sister was in the kitchen and her attempting to make the potato dish had the potential to be a catastrophe.

“It’ll be fine,” Maria waved her concern away. “So someone will be at the airport to pick you up at four,” she told her then thinking she might have to send Max while she was busy making the potato dish, she also reminded her self she needed to run out and buy Liz some presents since the ones she had were in New York.

“You be there Maria,” Liz told her. “I’m flying to Roswell for you so the least you can do is be there when I arrive.”

“I’ll do my best but I can’t make any promises,” Maria told her.

“Maria…”

“Gotta go sis, see you soon,” Maria cut her off.

Maria punched the air as she flicked her phone shut.

When she walked back into the kitchen Max was just pouring her cup of coffee.

“Guess what?” She grinned.

“What?” Max asked as he put the cup down in front of her.

“Liz is home,” she smiled.

“Oh really that’s great,” Max said.

“Yeah it is, unexpected but good,” Maria nodded.

“What’s she doing for Christmas?” He asked.

“Well that’s the thing,” Maria started, “I didn’t want her to be alone so I kind of convinced her to come to Roswell,” she said.

Max’s eyes went wide, “Um ok,” he said.

“It will be great,” Maria smiled. “The two of you will get to meet and I’ll be able to spend Christmas with my two favourite people in the world,” she said excitedly.

“Yeah that’s great,” Max smiled at her.

Over at the stove Isabel looked at her mother in exasperation. “Two of them?” She mouthed.

“I hope it’s ok?” Maria said to Max.

“Its fine,” he told her. “One more for Christmas won’t make a difference right Mum?” He asked as he turned to his mother.

“Of course not honey,” Dianne Evans replied but at the same time she was just praying that Liz was nothing like her sister.

***
“What’s wrong?” Max asked as he watched Maria emerge from the hotel reception with a frown on her face.

“They’re all booked,” she told him.

“Oh,” Max frowned, he hadn’t expected that.

“So where’s the closest one?” She asked.

“Um this is pretty much it Maria, Roswell isn’t that big,” Max replied.

“So where is Liz going to stay?” Maria asked shocked.

“Well if you don’t mind she could bunk in with you at the house,” Max replied thinking that was probably their only option.

He knew his family would be less than happy. The house was already packed to the rafters and they were worried that Liz was going to be exactly like Maria. Max wasn’t stupid he knew his family weren’t that fond of Maria. She wasn’t the type of girl they had expected him to bring home or consider a future with which is probably one of the reasons he had been so attracted to Maria to begin with. She was completely different from the girls he had ever dated before and the girls in his past who had hurt him. Max was convinced that Maria wasn’t the type of girl that would hurt him intentionally.

“You sure that would be ok?” Maria asked hesitantly.

“We’ll just have to ask mum and dad,” Max shrugged.

“Thank you,” she smiled.

“No problem,” he grinned back.

***

Dianne Evans looks up surprised when Max and Maria walked in arms laden down with packages.

“What’s all this?” She asked.

“I bought some groceries to make the Parker traditional potato dish for Christmas Eve dinner,” Maria explained with a grin.

“Oh well that’s very nice Maria but I already do mash potatoes and baked potatoes,” Dianne explained.

“Oh,” Maria said, “well I just thought it would be nice for Liz and I to have something from home tomorrow.”

Dianne was about to argue with Maria that there was a reason her traditions wouldn’t be at the table tomorrow or on Christmas day and that was because her and her sister would be sharing an Evans traditional Christmas but then she saw the pleading eyes of her son and she didn’t have the heart too.

“What type of potatoes is this dish?” She asked.

“It’s a cream potatoes dish,” she shrugged not knowing how else to explain it.

“Ok then,” Dianne smiled.

She looked at the other packages then and to her son. “Some last minute gifts,” Max explained as he placed them under the Christmas tree.

“How about we go for a walk?” Dianne suggested then to her son. She hadn’t gotten the chance to talk to him since he had been home and decided that now was her best opportunity while Maria was busy in the kitchen.

“That would be nice,” Max smiled.

Five minutes later, they were walking slowly down Murray Lane together.

“It’s nice to be home,” Max finally broke the silence.

“It’s nice to have all you home,” Dianne smiled at him.

“I’m glad you suggested this walk because I wanted to talk to you,” Max told her.

“Yeah?” She asked.

Max nodded. “You remember that ring nanna left for me?” He asked.

Dianne stopped and it took a few steps before Max realised that she wasn’t walking with him anymore.

“Mum?” He questioned.

“Please don’t tell me your thinking of marrying this girl Max?” She asked.

“Maybe,” Max grinned.

Dianne shook her head at her son. “You can’t be serious Max?”

“Why not?” He frowned.

“Because she’s not the one for you,” Dianne said simply.

“Why? Because she doesn’t fit the stereotype that you all have worked out for me,” he asked slightly angry.

“Max honey we don’t care if you date a blonde, brunette or a red head. Whether she’s a model, a nurse or just answers phones for a living we just want you to be happy.”

“And what if I tell you she makes me happy?” Max asked.

“Then I’d tell you to think long and hard about wether you love this woman and if she’s the right one for you for the rest of your life, and if you tell me she is then I’ll give you your nana’s ring with my blessing,” she said.

They continued walking for a while then and talked about everything and nothing before they began heading back to the house. They were at the top of Murray Lane when Max slowed his pace down.

“Hold on to Nanna’s ring for a little longer,” he said to his mother.

Dianne smiled at him. “We’re so proud of you Max,” she told him.

“Thank you,” he nodded.

Thanks everyone for reading and leaving feedback.

This story is not meant to bag Maria out, I'm just using her particular character because she does have an extreme personality and that's what i needed in this case.

Hope you enjoy this next part :D

Max sighed as he looked at the piece of paper which had all of Liz Parkers flight details on it. Maria had handed them to him an hour ago before informing him that she couldn’t go with him to pick up Liz because if she did the potato dish wouldn’t be ready for dinner that night.

Max knew how much it meant to her, and that she was doing it to try to make Liz feel welcome for Christmas. So here Max was, at Roswell airport, to pick up a woman he had never met before.

After finding the right gate, which didn’t turn out to be that hard since Roswell airport was extremely small, Max waited until the flight arrived.

Fifteen minutes later people started to walk through the gate and Max looked at each one of them as he tried to recognise Liz who he had only seen before in photos in Maria’s apartment.

Eventually the small influx of people disappeared and then there was only a woman with long chocolate brown hair, big brown eyes and extremely beautiful standing and looking around for someone.

“Liz?” Max asked as he approached.

Liz turned when she heard her name. She felt the air in her lungs fly from her body when she saw the handsome man standing before her.

“Yes,” she nodded.

Max grinned then. This woman looked nothing like the girl in the pictures that Maria had. Granted that girl had been a lot younger and wore braces.

“I’m Max,” he told her and offered his hand to her.

“Max? Wow,” she gasped.

Maria wasn’t lying when she said he was an Adonis.

“I’m sorry but Maria got caught up in the kitchen so she couldn’t come…” he explained her absence.

“I hope someone’s supervising or it won’t be standing when we return,” Liz smiled.

Max’s eyes went wide. “Oh well my mums there,” he told her.

“Good,” she said. “Well its great to finally meet you Max and thank you for letting me crash you’re Christmas, even though I’m sure you didn’t get much choice in the matter.”

Max chuckled then. “Well it’s a pleasure to meet you too. You obviously know Maria very well.”

“Oh yeah,” Liz agreed.

Max looked down at the bag by Liz’s feet then. “Is that your only bag?” He asked.

“Yep I travel light,” Liz shrugged.

Max picked up Liz’s bag then and led her out to the small car park and his waiting rental car.

“I guess I get to tell you the bad news about the hotel too,” Max said as he shoved the bag into the boot.

“Um ok?” Liz bit her bottom lip.

“It was booked out so you’ll be bunking with Maria at my parent’s house, I hope that’s ok?”

“Oh God Max, I’m so sorry about all of this. Are you sure it’s ok?” She asked worried.

“It’s fine,” Max smiled.

“I’m gonna kill Maria,” Liz mumbled under her breath.

“So Liz how was your trip?” Max asked curiously as they began the drive back to the Evans house.

“It was wonderful,” Liz smiled, “I could have stayed away forever,” she added.

“What made you come home?” Max asked curiously, from the impression he had gotten from Maria, Liz intended on travelling and working for some time to come.

Liz gazed out the window before looking back at Max, “I missed home, I missed Maria,” she smiled, “but mainly I just got lonely, and I thought it was time to come home and try and create some type of life here.”

“You’re pretty young to be worried about that,” Max replied.

“I know and I’m not going to stop travelling, just going to do it part time instead of full time.”

“That sounds nice,” he agreed.

“So tell me about you Max? Tell me about the guy who’s captured my sister’s heart?” She asked.

Max was everything Maria had described, gorgeous and great company.

“What do you want to know?” Max asked.

Max couldn’t believe the differences between Maria and Liz. Not only was Liz absolutely gorgeous in a more subtle type of way to Maria but she was funny and intelligent too.

“What do you do? What are your dreams for the future?” Liz grinned.

“That’s a big question,” Max laughed.

“I know but it’s also very important.”

“True,” Max agreed.

“Well I’m in my final year of law school at NYU,” he replied, “I graduate in May and then I plan on getting a job there in business law.”

“Wow, that’s great,” Liz smiled.

“You know you’re not what I expected at all,” Liz blurted out.

“No?” Max asked amused.

“God no. I thought you would be like all of the other guys Maria dates,” Liz tells him.

Max was surprised by that but his curiosity got the better of him. “What type of guys does she normally date?” He asked.

“Rock star wanna bee’s who are only dating her because she lets them think she’s important and can get them a record contract. Once they realise she can’t, or won’t they normally dump her.”

“Oh,” he frowned.

“I’m glad she’s finally trying something different. You’ve been good for her from what I can tell.”

“She asked me to move in,” Max told Liz.

Liz’s eyes went wide, that piece of information hadn’t been shared with her by Maria, and came as a bit of a shock to Liz.

“Really?”

“Yeah, I agreed so we’re supposed to be doing it after Christmas,” Max answered and if Liz was right, he sounded a little uncertain.

“Well good luck with that,” Liz said honestly.

Max found himself barely able to keep his eyes of Liz for the rest of the drive home. He kept casting glances at her and watching her as she took in the sights of Roswell. A couple of times she turned and caught him staring but would just smile politely and turn away.

When they finally reached the Evans house Maria ran out of the house squealing.

Liz’s eyes went wide as she took in her sister’s appearance. She was covered from almost head to tow with what looked like flour and she was wearing a floral apron something she would normally not be seen dead in. How times had changed.

“Oh my God Lizzie it’s so good to see you,” she said as she hugged her tightly.

“You too Maria, but for the record I’m mad at you for not coming to get me at the airport,” Liz replied as she hugged her back tightly.

“You look good,” Maria said stepping back and taking in her appearance. “Really good,” she added.

Liz blushed. “Thanks.”

“Maybe I should go on an overseas holiday,” she sighed then.

“What are you wearing anyway?” Liz asked. “You know the food belongs in the dishes not your clothes right?” Liz teased then.

Maria looked down at her apron and frowned.

“How’s the cooking sweetie?” Max asked.

“Great,” Maria lied with a fake smile and Liz could tell right away.

“I need your help,” Maria whispered.

“What more can I possibly do?” Liz replied sarcastically.

“The potato bake didn’t taste right,” she replied.

Liz rolled her eyes, “I told you that was a bad idea,” she whispered.

They walked into the house then; Max took Liz’s bag upstairs to his room, while Maria led Liz into the kitchen.

Liz gasped when she saw the mess. “Maria has Max’s mum seen this?” She asked horrified.

Maria shook her head.

“You better start cleaning this up now,” Liz told her.

Liz immediately picked up a cloth and began wiping down the bench while she stacked some of the dishes and utensils that Maria had used.

Maria was throwing the potato bake into the bin. In a few minutes the kitchen looked better, not good but when Max walked in he wasn’t as alarmed as Liz had been.

“So where’s this famous potato dish?” He asked.

“Oh, it’s a surprise,” Maria lied and Liz glared at her.

“Ok,” he grinned. “You look cute in that apron,” he told her then.

Michael entered the kitchen then and looked over at Liz.

“Michael this is Maria’s younger sister Liz,” Max introduced. “Liz this is my older brother Michael.”

“Hey,” Michael nodded at Liz while checking her out.

“Hi Michael,” Liz smiled. He looked nothing like Max and he really wasn’t Liz’s type.

“Michael and I are going to go shoot some hoops with Zan so I’ll leave you guys to catch up but the girls should be home soon,” Max explained.

“Great,” Maria said again and this time even Michael frowned at her surprised that she didn’t have something else to say.

As soon as they were gone, Maria sank into a chair at the table and threw her head down. “This is a mess,” she cried. “My cooking sucks and the whole family hates me Lizzie.”

Liz looked around the kitchen and sighed. “Come one lets get this potato bake cooked before someone comes home and then you can clean up,” Liz said.

“Thank you,” Maria smiled. “What would I do without you?” She asked.

Liz rolled her eyes. “You’d be fine,” Liz told her.

A half an hour later Liz was putting the new constructed bake into the oven. This time she hadn’t let Maria anywhere near it. That was how Dianne, Isabel and Ava found them.

“Hey guys,” Maria said cheerily. “This is my sister Liz.”

The woman all looked over at Liz who was still standing by the oven with gloves mitts on.

“Hi,” she smiles.

“This is Max’s mum Dianne, Max’s twin Isabel and his sister in law Ava,” Maria explained.

“It’s nice to meet you,” Liz says politely, “and thank you so much for allowing me to invade your Christmas,” she smiled.

Dianne Evans smiled at the girl in front of her. She was not what she expected at all and she instantly loved her.

What she did next though surprised the hell out of Maria.

“It’s a pleasure sweetheart,” she said before walking over and giving her a hug.

Thanks so much guyz!! I really appreciate all your feedback :D

BTW sorry for labeling the part wrong on Wednesday

Merry Christmas Everyone!

mareli - Most mothers have an idea of the types of attributes they want the girl who is with there son to have and i think that right now Dianne can't see any of those things in Maria. Worse yet, she's already heard things about Maria from Zan and Ava.

Xmag
guelbebek

tequathisy - She expected Liz to be like Maria and i think she liked the fact that Liz wasn't so full on the second she met her.

katydid - I think as the story unfolds people will realise that I'm not portraying Maria as someone no one would like, she's just simply not the person the Evans want with Max. They see why she isn't the one for their son/brother

Behrystrwbry - I think we've all had a moment like that with someone, it usually happens when one person is trying too hard lol.

LysCat - thankyou! you summed it up nicely.

nibbles2 - I think it's obvious, and will become more so as the story goes on that Max doesn't really know what he wants at all and maybe that's why he isn't rushing to Maria's rescue, that and the fact that she really doesn't need him to.

“Why don’t we all go out tonight after dinner?” Maria suggested as the Evans children, their partners and Liz sat around the Evans living room.

“Out where?” Isabel asked.

“I don’t know a club, a pub,” Maria shrugged. “There has to be something fun to do in this little dingy town right?” She grinned.

Liz cringed at her sister’s words as the others in the room frowned at Maria’s comment. Sometimes Maria had no tact.

“Actually this dingy town of ours has three pubs and a nightclub,” Isabel snapped back at her.

Maria was taken back by Isabel’s comment but quickly shook it off. There was no way she was going to let Isabel think she had gotten to her.

“The nightclub sounds great,” she said.

“Maybe Alex will be there Iz,” Ava teased her sister in law and Isabel instantly blushed.

“Who’s Alex?” Maria asked.

“No one,” Isabel replied quickly.

“Isn’t he that band geek in high school that used to follow you everywhere?” Michael asked.

“Yeah that’s him,” Max chuckled remembering Alex Whitman very well from high school. He did everything short of stalking Isabel.

“Isabel hooked up with him when she was home last year,” Ava informed them all.

“Ava!” Isabel gaped.

“You hooked up with a band geek, Iz?” Zan laughed.

“He isn’t a band geek anymore, ok?” Isabel defended herself.

“Right,” Max replied not believing for a second that Alex Whitman could be anything more.

“He’s not,” Isabel turned and hit her brother.

“So why don’t you call him?” Maria suggested then, “then there would be 8 of us.”

“I don’t think so,” Isabel said.

Liz had been quiet through the conversation but was smiling at the interaction between the siblings. She had always wished she had more siblings growing up.

“So Liz, tell us about your travels,” Zan suggested then.

“Oh sure,” Liz replied surprised.

Dianne and Phillip joined them then and they spent the next hour listening and laughing to Liz’s stories. Everyone was enthralled at the places she had been and the things she had seen, everyone but Maria.

She couldn’t understand why the Evans appeared to like Liz so much more than her. They had instantly accepted her into their family, even Isabel who had been like ice to her since she had stepped through the door.

Without a word she stood up quietly walked out the room, doubting anyone, including her boyfriend would even notice.

Five minutes later though it was Liz who noticed her sister’s absence. “Where did Maria go?” She asked Max.

Max looked around the room confused, “I’m not sure,” he frowned, “I’ll go see if I can find her she probably just went to the bathroom or something.”

“Ok,” Liz nodded.

Max searched the house and couldn’t find Maria anywhere; he was starting to panic when he looked out the window and noticed her sitting on the swing in the back yard.

Maria was near tears as Max walked out into the backyard and she looked away quickly as she saw him approach, to try to compose herself.

“Hey, what are you doing out here?” He asked.

Maria shrugged but moved over so he could take a seat.

Max sighed. Bringing Maria home for Christmas had not been what he had expected. He could tell his family didn’t really like her; his mother had made her feelings clear the day before.

“Your family hates me,” she finally whispered.

“No they don’t,” Max denied quickly. Hate was a strong word, and they just didn’t know her right? Once they did, they would love her too, wouldn’t they?

Sometimes Max didn’t think his parents understood what it was like trying to find someone to share your life with. Max wanted what his parents had, 30 years of absolute happiness. He wanted to find someone who was passionate about life and family. Most of the girls he dated or went to school with were only passionate about one thing, their careers. Sure Maria was driven, but she loved life, she was fun, and she cared about him.

“Yeah Max they do. I mean your sister snaps my head off after everything I say…”

“You called our home town dingy,” Max pointed out in defence of his sister.

“I didn’t mean it like that,” Maria sighed.

“Well sometimes you speak before you think Maria and you can say hurtful things.”

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“Its ok, and don’t worry about Iz she’ll warm to you,” he said as he slung an arm around Maria’s shoulder.

“Your mum hugged Liz you know,” she said then.

“What?”

“When she got home earlier she walked into the kitchen and I introduced her to Liz and your mum just smiled and hugged her.”

“So?” Max asked confused.

“She didn’t hug me.”

“Yes she did,” Max pointed out.

“No Max, I hugged her,” Maria argued.

Max sighed tiredly. “I don’t want to fight over this,” he said.

“Me either,” she agreed.

“You’re just a little different to us but once they get used to it they’ll like you as much as I do,” he attempted to smile.

“Like?” Maria cocked her head to the side. “Surely you more than like me Max,” she smiled. He had brought her home for Christmas that meant more than like didn’t it.

Max felt a like a deer caught in headlights. “Maria…” He whispered. He wasn’t ready to say he loved her, he cared deeply for her and he was contemplating a future with her but…

“I think I’m in love with you Max,” she grinned speaking over the top of him.

Max’s eyes got wider if possible. “Um wow.”

“That’s all you’re going to say?” She grinned.

Maria waited then as Max opened and shut his mouth trying to find the right words to express his feelings. But there were none. She wanted him to reciprocate her feelings and more and more he was starting to doubt his feelings for her. He couldn’t tell her that.

“I care for you.”

“But you don’t love me,” she smiled sadly, “yet,” she added then.

She stood up then. “There’s no rush Max,” she told him. “But I think I’m going to head inside now it’s getting cold out here,” she smiled at him.

Max watched her go, a frown of confusion marring her features.

From Max’s bedroom Liz watched the scene unfold and continued to watch as Max sat on the swing deep in thought.

She eventually dragged her eyes away from him when she heard Maria’s footsteps up the stairs.

***

Dinner that night was a BBQ accompanied with salad and hot corn. Everyone sat around the large dinning room table which was a bit more squished with the extra guests.

“This is wonderful,” Liz grinned as she bit into the juicy corn.

“Glad you like it sweetheart,” Dianne smiled back.

Dianne Evans had never met two people so different as Liz and Maria. She was also aware of how close they were. Another thing hadn’t escaped Dianne’s notice was the way her son would stare at Liz when he thought she, and no one else was looking.

“It’s been so long since I’ve had such traditional home cooked meals,” she added then.

“I’ll bet,” Phillip chuckled remembering all the places she talked about being lately.

“What does your family normally do for Christmas?” Isabel asked Liz.

“Oh well we usually had the traditional Parker Christmas party on Christmas Eve and then on Christmas day my mum would cook a chicken and ham,” Liz explained.

“That must have been nice sweetie. You girls must miss your family at this time of year. We go to midnight mass on Christmas Eve,” Dianne replied.

“Oh that sounds beautiful.” Liz smiled, “would you mind if I came this year?” She asked.

“Of course not,” Dianne smiled happily. “What about you Maria would you like to join us too?” She asked.

Maria swallowed her mouthful of food. “Um thank you but no, I don’t believe in God,” she told them.

“Oh that’s a shame, it is really beautiful,” she continued.

“I just never got the whole thanking God; I mean what does he do for us? Look at all the people in the world starving, or dying,” she continued.

“Maybe some people just need something to believe in, a little bit of faith,” Dianne said.

Max could feel the conversation getting out of control and he placed a hand on Maria’s lap hoping to get her attention.

“How can you have faith is someone who has deserted us all?” She asked.

“How can you have no faith?” Dianne countered.

“I have faith in important things, myself, my family,” Maria shrugged.

“And we don’t because we believe in a greater entity than ourselves?” Isabel asked angrily. “You talk about people suffering in the world yet look at yourself in your designer clothes and your $100 haircut. Don’t sit at our table and be a hypocrite telling us our beliefs are wrong. It’s people like you…”

Before Isabel could finish Maria interrupted her. “Maybe you should try getting a $100 haircut and something a bit more feminine and you wouldn’t have to be still crushing over last years fling,” Maria snapped.

“Maria,” Liz gasped.

“Oh no you didn’t...” Isabel yelled as she rose to her feet.

“I think you should leave my dinner table Maria,” Phillip Evans said then.

He had never seen his daughter or wife get so upset but this girl that Max had brought home managed do that easily.

“Excuse me?” She asked shocked.

“You heard me,” he replied.

“Dad?” Max questioned.

“Max she’s out of line,” Phillip replied calmly.

“Fine,” Maria snapped rising to her feet and throwing her napkin down.

She looked back at Max and Liz then who were still seated with their heads down.

When she realised that they weren’t following her, her heart fell and without a word, she stormed out of the house and towards the nearest car.

Please hold your tomatoes and rotten fruit! :)

The table is silent after Maria has left.

“Was that really necessary?” Max finally asks his family in a whisper.

The table remains silent though.

Quietly and politely, Liz takes the napkin out of lap and places it on the table. “Excuse me, I should go after her,” she explains as she stands. But before Liz can take a step away from the table, she is surprised by the loud bang from outside.

“What was that?” Isabel asks.

“Oh shit,” Max curses jumping to his feet. He is followed by Zan, Michael and Phillip who all follow him outside to find Max’s rental car crashed against the white picket fence with Maria behind the wheel.

Michael is the first to reach the car.

“Ouch.” Maria whines as he opens the car door.

“Are you ok?” He asks.

Slowly Maria nods. “Can you stand up?”

“Yeah I’m fine just feeling really stupid,” she answers him.

“Here let me help you,” he says and holds her arms as she climbs out of the car.

“Maria are you ok?” Max moves to her side and asks.

Maria frowns and turns to Michael ignoring Max completely. “Do you have a car?” She asks.

“Um no,” he shakes his head in confusion.

“Great,” she sighs.

Maria turns and begins to walk towards the road then.

“Maria where are you going?” Max calls out worried.

“Go away Max. You’re the last person I want to talk to at the moment,” she snaps.

Max is about to take off after her when a hand on his shoulder stops him. “Let me,” Michael offers. It was obvious that Maria was pissed and he didn’t think Max was the right person to try to get through to her.

Max thought about it for a few seconds before nodding and when he did Michael jogged off in the direction Maria was walking.

“Is she ok?” Liz asked as Max walked back towards the front door. She had been watching everything unfold from the porch with Ava, including Maria completely dismissing Max. Isabel and Dianne had remained inside which was probably a good thing given the condition of her fence right then.

“Um I think so,” he replied offering her a small smile.

“It’ll be ok,” Liz whispered reaching out a hand to him unconsciously. Max took it in his much larger one and squeezed it. “She’s just really angry at the moment but when she calms down she’ll realise that she over reacted.”

Max sighed and sat down on the porch. Liz sat down next to him and waited for him to speak knowing that he had something on his mind.

“This is not the weekend I anticipated,” he finally spoke.

Liz had noticed the tension between Maria and the Evans family as soon as she arrived. As much as she hated to admit it, Maria had been right; she was not fitting into Max’s family at all.

“The best laid plans usually don’t work Max. You can never guess how people are going to react to situations,” Liz replied wisely. “I used to have a plan for everything until one day I asked myself why. Now I live everyday as it comes,” she finished with a shrug.

“You don’t strike me as the planning type,” he told her.

“Then my plan worked,” Liz laughed.

Silence fell between them again for a few seconds, but it was a comfortable silence as they sat with their hands linked.

“My family don’t really get her,” Max finally explained to Liz.

“Not a lot of people do,” Liz smiled.

“They get you,” he whispered as he met her eyes.

Liz didn’t know what was happening as she stared back into Max’s amber pools but she felt something between them that she had never felt before, with anyone.

Unconsciously their heads began to drift together until Max’s lips were pressed gently against Liz’s. The kiss only lasted a few seconds before Liz pulled back. She pulled her hand away from Max and began to rise to her feet.

“No Liz please don’t I’m sorry,” Max rushed out.

“We shouldn’t have done that,” she whispered her hand against her lips which were still tingling.

“I know but I don’t regret it,” he replied.

He knew it was wrong, that his feelings for Liz were wrong but he was struggling to deny them.

“You’re right about Maria, Max. She loves you,” Liz said as she slowly rose to her feet.

Max closed his eyes and turned away. “I know,” he said.

“I can’t do this to her Max,” she said and began backing away.

When Liz was gone Max was left sitting there feeling more confused than he had ever felt in his life.

***

“So where are we going?” Michael finally asked as he and Maria continued to walk around in circles.

Maria stopped then. “I have no idea,” she replied.

“Ok then so how about we just head back because it’s pretty cold out here and I didn’t bring my jacket.”

“I want to get a drink,” she announced.

“Okay,” Michael sighed. “Then we better head this way,” he informed her.

Fifteen minutes later, they walked into a bar.

“Hey Michael, home for Christmas?” The bar tender greeted when he saw him.

“Hey Joe, yep visiting the family,” he replied.

“And who’s this pretty lady?” He asked.

“This is Maria. Maria this is Joe, he owns this place,” Michael introduced.

“I figured since it’s ‘Joe’s bar,’” Maria replied.

“Funny,” Michael sighed.

“Nice to meet you Joe. Can I get a beer please?” Maria spoke up.

“Sure thing.” He grinned.

Maria walked off to a booth then leaving Michael at the bar to pay. “Make that two,” he sighed and pulled out his wallet.

“Feisty one you got there Mikey,” He laughed.

“No, she’s not my girl,” Michael replied as he turned to look at her. She was now standing at the jukebox and flicking through the song lists. Her hips were swaying and he couldn’t help but admire what a nice ass she had.

“Keep em coming Joe,” he said as he picked up the two beers and headed over to Maria.

***

When Max walked into the kitchen, he found the rest of the Evans family.

“Is Maria alright?” Dianne asked.

“Like you care,” Max replied.

“That’s enough Max,” Phillip replied sternly.

“Besides it’s her own stupid fault,” Isabel added. “She’s a bitch.”

“Takes one to know one right Iz?” Max asked sarcastically as he realised how upset he was with his sister over her treatment of Maria.

“Come on Max. I know you’re angry but this isn’t going to help,” Zan spoke up.

“All I wanted was for you to like her,” Max said quietly. “And you couldn’t even try,” he added.

“That’s not fair,” Dianne cried.

“No, what’s not fair is my families snobbery of someone who isn’t like them,” he said tiredly.

Max pushed away from the bench he was leaning against. “I’m going to bed,” he said and walked out of the room.

He was almost at the stairs when Zan caught up with him. “Max…”

Max stoped and turned to face his brother. “I know you’re angry, and you’re right. Some of us could have been nicer, more welcoming, but she’s not the one for you bro.”

“How do you know that?” Max asked. “How do you know that she isn’t and that because of this I’ll loose her and never find my soul mate?”

Zan smiled at his brother. Max had always been a dreamer. The kind of guy who always took things to heart. Zan remembered many brooding nights of being forced to listen to the Counting Crows after Max’s latest girlfriend broke up with him.

“You’ve always been dramatic.”

“It’s not funny,” Max told him.

“I think if you actually stop and really look you’ll realise that the girl for you is probably closer than you think,” he said.

Unconsciously Max’s eyes moved to his bedroom where he was sure Liz was hiding. Something that didn’t go unnoticed to Zan.

Zan slapped him on the back then. “Night bro,” he whispered.

***

“Dance with me Mikey,” Maria giggled as she tried to tug Michael up from the booth he was sitting in.

4 beers and she was drunk.

Michael shook his head.

“Oh please?” She whined.

Michael shook his head again, “No way Blondie.”

“Pretty please with sugar on top?” She continued.

Michael sighed, “One dance just to get you to shut up.” He groaned.

If he thought that Maria talked too much on a good day it didn’t hold a candle to a drunken Maria.

Just as Michael stood up a slow song clicked on over the juke box.

Michael hesitated a few seconds before he placed his arms around her waist and began to sway to the music.

This year’s love had better last.
Heaven knows it's high time,
And I’ve been waiting on my own too long.
But when you hold me like you do.
It feels so right.
I start to forget.
How my heart gets torn,
when that hurt gets thrown.
Feeling like you can't go on.

Maria placed her head against Michael’s chest as they danced. It felt good to be held in strong arms.

Turning circles when time again.
It cuts like a knife oh yeah.
If you love me got to know for sure.
Cos it takes something more this time.
Than sweet sweet lies.
Before I open up my arms and fall,
Losing all control
Every dream inside my soul,
And when you kiss me

Michael knew he shouldn’t be dancing with Maria like this. It was dangerous; he was thinking about doing things with her that he definitely shouldn’t be thinking of doing with his brother’s girlfriend.

On that midnight street,
Sweep me off my feet,
Singing ain't this life so sweet.

This years love had better last
this years love had better last

“You ok?” Michael whispered.

Maria pulled back and looked at him with a drunken smile. “I’m great,” she whispered.

So whose to worry
If our hearts get torn
When that hurt gets thrown
don’t you know this life goes on
and won't you kiss me
on that midnight street.
Sweep me off my feet
Singing ain't this life so sweet.

This year’s love had better last.
This year’s love had better last.
This year’s love had better last.
This years love had better last.

Michael pulled back as the song came to an end. “I should get you home,” he said.

Maria smiled and stepped closer to him. “Yeah, you should take me home,” she agreed.

Max’s feet unconsciously stop as he tried to walk past his bedroom and towards Michael’s. He knew Liz was in there, he could practically feel her. Raising his hand, he knocked quietly. A few seconds later Liz opened the door slightly.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi,” she replied, leaning her head on the side of the door.

Max scratched his ear nervously as he stared at the beautiful woman in front of him. There were so many things he wanted to say to her but right now the words wouldn’t come to him.

“Do you want to come in?” Liz finally asked.

“Sure,” Max nodded and followed her into the room.

“I’m sorry. I can leave if you were going to bed,” Max apologised as he noticed that Liz had changed into her pyjamas.

Liz looked down self consciously at her Elmo pyjamas. “No its ok. I think we should talk,” she replies.

Max nods, “I know.”

Liz made herself comfortable on the edge of Max’s bed while Max took a seat near the window looking out it briefly into the darkness.

“Is it snowing yet?” She wondered.

It had been unusually cold in Roswell and the weather forecast was predicting snow for the first time in a few years. It reminded Liz of Christmas with her family in New York.

“Not yet,” he replied.

“Soon,” Liz added.

“Liz, I’m sorry about earlier….”

“It’s ok Max. The truth is the kiss was wrong but I’m not going to deny that I didn’t enjoy it and if circumstances were different then I probably would do it again,” she admitted.

“Really?” Max smiled. Was it really possible that Liz was feeling some of the things for him that he was feeling for her?

“Really,” Liz smiled back unable to not as she stared at Max’s boyish good looks.

“But circumstances aren’t different,” she added in a whisper and looked away regretfully.

“I know,” Max agreed.

“So I think it’s best if I go.”

“What? NO!” Max objected. The very thought of Liz leaving made his stomach drop.

“Max this thing between us,” she gestured between them, “nothing good can come of it,” Liz argued.

“Maybe not but Liz, its Christmas. What will you tell Maria?”

Liz looked away guiltily at the mention of her sister. Liz had never known Maria to be as happy with a guy as she had been with Max and the very thought of ruining that for her made Liz feel ashamed.

“I’ll stay till Christmas night and then I’ll fly home; tomorrow I’m going to move to a hotel.”

“But they’re all booked,” Max reminded her.

“No, I rang around and there have been a few openings.”

“Oh ok.” Max sighed.

The truth was Liz knew she couldn’t stay around Max and not continue to feel everything she was feeling and that was the problem. Her feelings for Max made her want to forget everything else and Maria meant too much to her.

“I’ll drive you over in the morning if you like?” Max said then.

“Not that’s ok. I’ll just get a taxi,” Liz shook her head.

“Liz…”

“Besides you’ll have your hands full with Maria in the morning,” she pointed out.

Reluctantly Max nodded.

Was it wrong that right now the furthest thing from his mind was Maria and making things right with her? That he just wanted to take Liz into his arms so he would know for certain that she was the perfect fit, and that she most likely belonged there. Max knew it was, and he also realised that Liz was smart enough to realise it too, which is why she was leaving before anything else could happen.

Max knew how much Liz meant to Maria and he knew that should be enough to keep him away from her, but right now he was very confused.

“I should let you get some sleep,” he whispered as he stood up.

Liz agreed with a nod.

“Don’t worry too much about Maria, Max. Once she’s calmed down she’ll be putty in your hands,” she tried to smile.

“Thanks.” He nodded.

Liz watched as he quietly left the room shutting the door behind him. Once it was closed, she moved the seat that Max had vacated and stared out at the dark night.

***

Once in Michael’s room Max felt lost. He changed into a long pair of pyjama pants and shirt and was just about to slip into bed when he changed her mind. Instead, grabbing his pillow and blanket he made his way back down the stairs and into the living room determined to wait for Maria.

***

“Shh,” Michael scolded Maria as he tried to sneak them quietly into his parent’s house. It was late and the house was dark.

Maria broke out in a giggle so Michael was left with little choice but to cover her mouth with his hand as he practically carried her up the stairs.

***

On the couch, Max lay fast asleep unable to wait any longer for Maria and Michael to return.

***

In Max’s bedroom, Liz had also fallen asleep after several voice mail messages to Maria expressing her worry that she hadn’t come home.

***

Once they reached Max’s door Michael removed his hand so he could open the door.

“Uh ah,” Maria shook her head. “Your room’s this way,” she told him escaping his grip and drunkenly walking into his room.

Michael rushed after her worried that she would trip over Max in her drunken state but instead she made her way with ease to his bed.

Looking towards the floor Michael found it empty, and the fold up bed Max had been sleeping in was folded and still pushed against the walls.

“Come to bed Mikey,” Maria slurred as Michael shut his bedroom door soundly.

***

Isabel frowned as she stared at her brother snoring on the living room couch.

“What are you staring at Isabel?” Dianne asked as she approached from behind.

“Shh,” Isabel whispered.

“What’s he doing down here?” Dianne wondered.

“Not sure,” Isabel shrugged before following her mother to the kitchen.

Just as they disappeared, Max’s eyes blinked open and he looked around the room in confusion. “What the hell?” He whispered as he tried to remember why he was asleep on the couch instead of in Michael’s bedroom. Then he remembered he was waiting to speak to Maria.

Isabel walks back in then. “You’re awake,” She said when she saw him sitting up.

“What time is it?”

“Seven,” Isabel answered.

With a nod, Max rose to his feet and made his way up the stairs.

“About last night…” Isabel said.

“Can this wait?” Max asked hopefully, “I don’t think Maria came home last night.”

“Oh,” Isabel frowned. “Ok then.”

“Thanks,” Max smiled and continued up the stairs.

He stood outside his bedroom nervously. Should he knock and risk waking them up or should he just open the door slightly to see if Maria was inside? Deciding on the latter, he opened the door quietly. His intention was to close the door quickly but one look at Liz sleeping peacefully in the middle of the bed and he froze. Even in sleep, she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.

Looking around the room, he noticed the absence of Maria and sighs in worry. He turns to walks back out of the room then.

“Max?” Liz questioned sleepily.

Max turned around with a guilty look on his face, “I’m sorry I was just checking if Maria got home last night.”

Liz yawned and sat up. Max smiled at how cute she looked with her hair all over the place. “I waited up as long as I could,” she explained.

“Me too, I even slept on the couch,” he explained.

“Did you check with Michael?” She asked then.

“Didn’t think of that,” Max nodded, “I’ll go do that now.”

“Ok,” Liz smiled at him.

With a small smile of his own, Max exited the room and made his way towards Michaels. The door was shut when he reached it and Max assumed that was a good sign. He opened the door and walked in. The room was still dark from the drawn curtains but he could see Michael’s body in the bed and sighed in relief. He knew Michael wouldn’t have left Maria alone.

He took another step towards the bed intending on waking Michael up to ask him where Maria was when the bed shifted. Max froze in place as Maria’s blonde hair came into view and the sheet fell away revealing her lacy bra as she rolled over so she was snuggled closer to Michael’s side.

Max began to back out of the room slowly until he reached the door. He couldn’t believe that his brother and girlfriend would do this to him. His anger rising, he slammed the door closed behind him before he took off down the hall and fled down the stairs.

***

Maria startled when the door slammed, her eyes opening and locking with Michaels who was also woken by Max slamming out of the room.

When Maria realised where she was, panic started over.

“Oh God,” she cried as he jumped out of bed. When she realised that she was only in her bra and panties she began to panic more.

“This so did not happen,” she said to Michael. “You’re not even my type,” she told him.

Michael arched an eyebrow at her, “Really that’s not what you were saying last night,” he teased.

“You,” she points to Michael, “this never happened ok? You cannot tell Max about this.”

Michaels smile faded at the mention of his brother and reluctantly he nodded. He knew he should tell Maria the truth but it was fun to watch her squirm. Maria rushed around the room gathering her clothing, not caring how she is putting it back on. When she had everything accounted for she walked to the door but before she walked out she stopped and turned back to Michael.

“Thank you,” she said.

Michael nodded and when she disappeared out the door, he closed his eyes and banged his head against the pillow.

Liz was halfway through packing the last of her things when Maria appeared in the room.

“Where have you been?” She asked. “We were really worried about you,” she added.

“I’m sorry,” Maria smiled weakly. “But I had to leave before I did something I shouldn’t have.”

“Bit late for that by the looks of the fence,” Liz pointed out.

“True,” Maria sighed and slumped onto the bed. She had the worst headache and a very queasy stomach, the result of too much to drink last night. She didn’t want to think of the repercussions of the night before quite yet because she almost couldn’t believe it herself.

Maria took note of her sister then, dressed, and zipping up her suitcase. “What are you doing?” She yawned.

“I got a room at the Tumbleweed,” Liz replied. “The taxi will be here in ten minutes.”

“Why?” Maria frowned.

“I think I’ve imposed enough,” Liz shrugged and looked away in an effort to hide her guilt. She was the worst sister in the world.

“You can’t leave me here Liz,” Maria whined.

Liz sighed; she didn’t like the idea of leaving Maria in such a hostile environment. She knew her sister hadn’t done anything to help herself much the night before but it was also obvious that the Evans were having a hard time accepting her.

“Then come with me,” she suggested.

“You think?” She asked not sure.

“Why not?” Liz said, “We can still come back for Christmas tomorrow but at least this way you’ll have a little bit of space away from the rest of Max’s family.”

“You’ve convinced me,” Maria jumped off the bed.

Maria would do anything that second to avoid being the same house as Michael and Max. She knew Max would just have to take one look at her around Michael and he would know what a cheating cow she was. The worst part was Maria was so drunk she couldn’t even remember it and she was slightly annoyed that Michael had taken advantage of her in that situation.

Max was the first guy that had ever treated Maria well. She had plenty of boyfriends but Max was the first one she actually thought she might have a future with and she was so ashamed that she might have ruined that with one night of drunken lust. Yes, she could admit that she found Michael attractive, and he was typically more her style. But she was with Max, she loved Max and she would do anything she could to try to make things work between them.

“Well hurry up and pack your things, the taxi will be here any second,” Liz said.

Maria hesitated. “You go, I should talk to Max first and I’ll get him to drive me over later.”

Although Maria didn’t want to face the Evans family that morning she also knew she couldn’t just walk away, not if she planned to be part of Max’s life in the future.

“Ok,” Liz nodded. She grabbed her bag then and walked towards the door before she stopped and looked back, “Are you ok? You don’t seem like yourself this morning.”

Maria wanted to tell Liz but she knew how disappointed her sister would be in her. “I’m fine, just hung over and tired.”

“Ok well I’ll see you later,” Liz smiled and left the room.

When Liz reached downstairs, she placed her bag near the front door before heading into the kitchen.

Dianne and Phillip Evans were sitting quietly at the kitchen table sipping coffee.

“Morning,” she greeted shyly.

“Good morning Liz,” they both greeted.

“Would you like some breakfast sweetheart?” Dianne offered.

“Oh thank you Dianne but no, actually I wanted to thank you and let you know that I got a room over at the Tumbleweed so I’m just heading over there now.”

“Oh honey you didn’t have to do that,” Phillip sighed feeling bad. He had a feeling she was leaving because of what happened the night before.

“I know but its ok,” Liz smiled.

The taxi beeped its horn outside then.

“You’re still coming for Christmas tomorrow right?” Dianne asked.

“I’d love that,” Liz smiled back.

“Well we’ll see you tomorrow then,” they told her.

Liz picked up her bag and headed out onto the porch. The taxi driver got out of his car and took her bag from him, placing it in the trunk.

“You’re leaving?”

Liz turned when she heard the whispered voice to find Max sitting on the porch.

“Yeah,” she nodded.

“Ok,” he said.

“Are you ok?” Liz asked worried.

Max looked up and met her eyes then and Liz almost gasped at what she saw.

“I wish you’d stay,” he told her honestly.

“I wish I could,” she replied tears springing to her eyes. “I better go,” she said then looking away. She knew if she continued to just stare at him she would get sucked in further and she couldn’t afford that because she was only hanging on by a bare thread.

Liz was almost in the taxi when she felt the sudden urge to look back.

When she did she found Max standing and watching her sadly.

With a final wave, she got into the taxi and closed the door.

As Max watched the taxi pull away from the kerb he couldn’t help but feel as though this would be the last time he would see Liz Parker, and that very thought almost broke his heart.

***

Maria decided to shower and change before going down in search of Max. She could have done with a few hours sleep before facing him and his family but she knew she couldn’t put it off any longer.

She descended the stairs slowly and took a deep breath before entering the kitchen. What she found when she walked through the door though shocked and scared her. The entire Evans family bar Max and Michael were in there.

For a second she almost contemplated walking back out until Zan spoke up.

“Maria could we speak to you for a second?” He asked.

“Um sure,” she agreed and took a step further into the kitchen.

“We want to apologise,” He explained.

“All of us,” Phillip Evans added giving Isabel and Dianne a pointed look.

“Yes,” they both whispered.

“I think things got a little out of hand last night...”

“Yeah which was partly my fault,” Maria spoke up. “I would like to apologise for that too.”

“It’s our fault too. We didn’t really give you a chance,” Isabel admitted stubbornly.

“I think it would be good if we started again,” Dianne Evans suggested then.

“I would like that,” Maria smiled.

“Great so how about some breakfast?” Phillip suggested.

“Thanks,” Maria nodded. The last thing she felt like was eating but the food was a type of peace offering, one she would happily accept. Maybe she wouldn’t need to move over to the Tumbleweed with Liz after all.

“Has anyone seen Max this morning?” She asked.

“You haven’t seen him?” Isabel asked slightly confused.

“No,” she shook her head.

“Last time I saw him he went looking for you, about a half an hour ago.”

“Oh,” she frowned wondering where he could possibly be.

“He’ll show up when he’s ready,” Dianne smiled. “Sit down and eat.”

***

“Hey man,” Michael greeted Max he descended the stairs wearing an old pair of tracksuit pants and sweatshirt.

Max frowned at Michael.

“Someone’s in a bad mood,” Michael laughed as he reached the bottom. The smile was quickly wiped off his face though when Max punched him square and hard in the jaw sending him falling to the floor.

“What the hell Max!” Michael yelled.

Michaels shout reached the kitchen and soon the occupants piled out to find Michael on the ground with Max glaring at him.

“Max what the hell is gong on?” Zan asked stepping forward.

“Why don’t you ask Michael” Max spat before stepping around Michael and walking up the stairs.

“Michael?” Dianne asked him.

Michael looked to where Maria was standing at the back of the group, her face deathly pale as she realised that her little secret was not a secret after all.

“Excuse me,” she said and pushed through everyone, rushing up the stairs after Max knowing that she needed to speak to him quickly.

“Michael is there something you want to tell us?” Phillip asked his son as Zan helped him off the ground.

Michael rubbed his jaw.

“Nothing, just a misunderstanding,” he grunted.

No one believed him but they decided to let it go.

***

Max was sitting at the window in his bedroom when Maria found him.

“Max...” she started.

“Don’t,” he replied. “I don’t want to hear what you have to say,” he told her.

“Let me explain.”

“You can’t explain, it doesn’t matter how or why. You betrayed me, and with my own brother,” he said hurt. As he said the words, guilt formed in his stomach at his hypocrisy. Hadn’t he himself been kissing Liz the night before?

“I was drunk,” Maria cried.

Max shook his head and refused to look at her. “You should leave,” he whispered.

“What?” Maria asked she wasn't sure if she had heard him right.

“I think you should leave.”

“Max that’s not going to solve anything,” she argued.

“I can’t stand to look at you right now,” he admitted and Maria gasped.

“Ok,” she said. “I’ll go stay with Liz at the hotel.”

Max nodded and then stood.

“Max please don’t do this,” she whispered.

Max stopped and hesitated as though he was about to say something but then decided against it and left instead.

“Maria what’s wrong?” Liz asked as she opened the door to find her sobbing sister.

“Oh God Liz, I messed up.” she cried falling into Liz’s waiting arms.

Liz helped Maria inside her room and sat her on the bed before pulling the bags the taxi driver had left, inside.

“What’s happened?”

“Last night I got drunk at a bar with Michael, and this morning when I woke up we were in bed together,” she cried. “Max found us.”

Liz’s eyes went wide.

“You and Michael?” She asked.

Maria nodded.

“How the hell did that happen?” She asked.

“He was being so nice to me…”

“What did Max say?” She asked taking a seat next to Maria and rubbing soothing circles on her back.

“He told me to leave,” she explained.

Liz sighed. It was so typical of Maria to get herself into that type of situation.

“I’m sure he’ll come around,” Liz said.

“I’m going to go and talk to him,” she said determinedly. “I’ll just give him a few hours to calm down,”

“Ok,” Liz agreed and let Maria lie down on her bed where she quickly fell asleep.

***

“What’s going on Max?” Isabel asked Max as she entered his bedroom which was now empty with both Maria and Liz gone.

Max looked up at his sister, “We just saw Maria leave.” She explained.

“She slept with Michael,” he replied.

Isabel’s eyes went wide, “What?”

“I found them in bed this morning.”

“Are you sure because that doesn’t sound like Michael?” Isabel said weakly.

“I saw them Isabel,” Max snapped.

“Ok,” Isabel replied defensively.

“What are you going to do?” She asked.

“Nothing. It’s over,” Max shrugged.

“Don’t you think you should talk to her first, hear the circumstances?” She asked.

“What’s to hear? She slept with Michael. If she would do something like that what else would she do?”

“But Max, I thought you loved her?” Isabel asked shocked. This wasn’t the brother she knew; he wasn’t mean or refused to listen to people.
But when Isabel expected him to immediately defend his feelings, Max didn’t.

“Max?” She questioned.

“I don’t know what I feel anymore Iz,” he admitted.

Isabel looked at him surprised. “You’re not sure that you’re in love with her?”

Max nodded.

“Because of what she did?” He asked.

Max hesitated a moment before admitting his feelings to Isabel. “No. Before that. Ever since I met Liz….”

Isabel smiled at the mention of Liz, Maria's more quite sister. She was definetely Max’s type and she wondered how she missed it.

“Is that why Liz left?” Isabel guessed.

Max nodded. “I think she felt the same way. We kissed last night.”

Isabel sighed and sat down on her brother’s bed. Why was it that while she had no love life to speak of Max had more than one option?

“What about Maria? She’ll be upset.”

“I know, which is why Liz left. She won’t do anything to hurt Maria,” Max replied.

“But you’re not happy about that are you?” Isabel guessed.

“I can’t stop thinking about her Iz. Instead of being heartbroken because my girlfriend cheated on my with my brother all I’m thinking about is what if I never get to see her again?” He sighed.

“Then you should tell her that,” Isabel told him. It was obvious that Max’s feelings for Liz were already strong and if Liz was feeling anything near the same for Max, then maybe they needed to put their own happiness ahead of Maria’s hurt feelings.

“What about Maria?” Max asked now wanting more of his sister’s advice.

“I’m sure if you explain she’ll understand,” Isabel said.

Max nodded. “Thanks Iz.”

“You’re welcome.”

***

Liz was surprised when there was a knock on the door an hour later.

“Michael hi,” she greeted when she opened the door. He wasn’t the Evans that she was expecting.

“Hi Liz. Is Maria here?” He asked.

“Yeah come in, she’s sleeping,” Liz invited.

As Michael entered the room, Maria was just opening her eyes after being woken by voices.

“Maria I’m so sorry,” he apologised.

Maria sat up and ran a hand through her hair.

Liz tried to be inconspicuous by going back to the book she was reading in a lounge chair by the window.

“What do you want?” She asked him in a whisper.

Michael could tell that she had been crying and he felt worse.

“I shouldn’t have let you leave this morning thinking that something happened between us that didn’t,” he sighed running a hand in frustration through his hair.

“We didn’t sleep together?” She asked with wide eyes.

“No we didn’t,” he said.

“So nothing happened between us at all?” She asked hopefully.

Michael grinned. “Not exactly. You did attack me when we got into bed last night but then you passed out...”

Maria closed her eyes and sighed in relief. “Did you tell Max?” She asked hopefully.

“No. He isn’t exactly talking to me,” he shrugged.

“Did you drive?” She asked standing up.

Michael nodded. “Well then let’s go,” she told him.

“Where?” He asked.

“I have to go and tell Max,” she said.

From the other side of the room Liz felt her heart fall. The selfish side of her was hoping that if Max and Maria really broke up that maybe eventually there would be a chance for her and Max. She tried to shake the feelings away and smiled at her sister.

“Good luck,” she whispered as Maria pulled Michael out the door.

***

Max was sitting in the kitchen nursing a cup of coffee when Michael and Maria entered.

He frowned at seeing them together and went to stand up.

“Before you leave hear me out,” Michael pleaded.

Despite himself Max nodded.

“I know you think you know what you saw this morning but you’re wrong. Maria was just really drunk last night and we didn’t want to wake everyone.”

“Nothing happened,” Maria spoke up wanting to make it perfectly clear.

Max studied his coffee.

“I would never do that to you Max, not matter how hot I think your girl is,” Michael told him.

“Ok, thanks for telling me,” Max replied.

Michel nodded and with a final smile at Maria, he regretfully left. He couldn’t deny that he liked Maria. He had definetely warmed to her personality.

“I’m so sorry Max,” Maria said walking further into the room. “I shouldn’t have gotten so drunk then none of this would have happened.”

She sat down across from Max then and waited for him to say something.

“Maria…” he started.

“Yeah?” She asked.

“I don’t think this is going to work,” he said and then looked up to meet her eyes.

“What do you mean?” She asked.

“We’re too different…” he trailed off.

“Are you breaking up with me?” She asked shocked.

Slowly, Max nodded.

“But why?” She cried. After Michael told him that nothing had happened, she had expected everything to be ok again.

“We were going to move in together, everything was fine until we came here.”

“I know, and you’re right. I thought everything was fine but I realise now that it isn’t,” he tried to explain.

“Why?” She asked.

“We’re just too different,” he told her.

Tears welled in Maria’s eyes. “Is this because your family doesn’t like me?” She asked.

Max smiled. “No,” he shook his head. “They just don’t know you like I do.”

Maria looked away as the tears fell.

“I still want you to share Christmas with us,” he told her.

Maria did her best to compose herself by wiping her face with her sleeve before looking back. “Thanks but I think Liz and I will just head back to New York.”

Max’s heart fell then. Liz was leaving.

“Oh ok,” he whispered.

“Um, call me when you get back and you can pick up some of your stuff,” she said standing up. If Max wanted to break up then she wanted it to be a clean break, she was not the type of girl who begged for second chances.

Max nodded and then could only watch as Maria fled the house to go back to the hotel to a waiting Liz for comfort.
Locked
