Common Ground, AU, M/L TEEN, Chapter 15, 3/7/05 [WIP]

Post by IluvMaxEvans »

Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the characters; I’m just a hopeless dreamer
Author’s Note: This is a new style for me….If you like, let me know and I’ll continue with this, but I’m not used to writing these types of stories, so gimme just a little bit of slack, lol. The first chapter starts to explain a few things, so it might be a little slower paced, the following chapters will be a lot faster paced, don’t worry.

Chapter 1: First day of school

“Honey, c’mon, we’re gonna be late for your first day of school!” Liz Parker called to her 5 year old daughter, Heather. The little blonde girl came running up to her mother with a huge smile on her face and jumped into her mother’s arms, “Got your lunch?”

“Yes mommy,” Heather said, proudly displaying her new Barbie lunchbox. Liz smiled and walked outside with Heather still in her arms. Since the school was only 2 blocks away, they were walking. Liz set her down and took her baby’s hand.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~5 Years Previous~
“Ms. Parker…who is the father?” the nurse at the hospital had asked her, right after her little angel was born.
“Father….um…he’s dead,” Liz said, lying. The nurse eyes her warily, but wrote down her phony answer none the less.
“Would you like to hold her?” another nurse asked, just finished cleaning Heather Rachel Parker. Liz nodded anxiously and took her newborn daughter in her arms.
“I’m going to be the best mommy ever to you…I promise,” she whispered into her baby’s ear. Surprisingly, birthing Heather wasn’t hard at all, she wasn’t in one of those 2 day labors, her water broke, and Heather came out half and hour later. She ran her hand lovingly over her daughter’s fuzzy blonde hair, and for a second her stomach felt uneasy, but then she looked into the big curious brown eyes and lost all feelings over uneasiness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Now, you be a good girl and listen to Mr. Evans okay Heather?” Liz asked the girl, kneeling down in front of her in the playground.

“Mommy, can you come in with me…puleeeeeese?” Heather asked. Liz, being a major pushover when it came to her daughter, nodded, and took her hand, leading her to classroom 9 when the bell rang.

“Good morning!” A man, presumably Mr. Evans greeted them as they walked in. Liz looked up and froze for about 2 seconds, before smiling and walking a nervous Heather in.

“Liz Parker, this is my daughter, Heather,” Liz said, offering her free hand to Mr. Evans.

“Very nice meeting you Mrs. Parker, I’m Mr. Evans, and I’, looking forward to having Heather in my class,” Mr. Evans said, smiling down at Heather.

“Actually, it’s Ms,” Liz said, correcting him. She hated it when people assumed just because she had a child she was married.

“My mistake, I’m sorry, now, Heather, why don’t you go sit in the seat that looks nicest to you, and we’ll let your mommy get going,” Mr. Evans said as other kids walked in. Heather nodded with big eyes and pulled Liz over to a desk in the middle of the classroom.

“Can I sit here?” she whispered. Liz laughed quietly.

“Yes, baby you can, now, mommy has to get to work, I’ll be here to pick you up at 12:30,” Liz said. Heather hugged her mother tightly before sitting nervously in her seat as a little brunette girl sat next to her.

“If there are any problems, please call me,” Liz said to Mr. Evans, handing him a sheet of paper with her home, phone, and work number on it.

“Don’t worry, have a good day Ms. Parker,” he replied, waving her goodbye as she exited the room.

“What a beautiful woman,” he thought to himself when she left. Long dark hair and enchanting chocolate brown eyes, with a perfect figure, “She must be no older than 25.”

Liz walked quickly back to her apartment and changed into her uniform. She had a part time job at the local Nordstrom’s, working in the junior's section of clothes.

“Heather sure did have a looker for her teacher,” He was gorgeous, short brown hair and hazel eyes, with a muscular build, “most likely in his early twenties,” Liz thought, sighing, “what is a gorgeous man doing, being a teacher, and he’s not even married!” She had noticed, while shaking his hand, that he didn’t have on a wedding band.

Liz dismissed her thoughts of him as she drove in her Ford Escape to the local mall. She wasn’t rich, by no means, but when her rich aunt died, she had left her a little over half a million, most of it Liz put in a trust fund for her daughter’s college tuition. With the rest, she had bought the car, and her 2 bedroom apartment.

“Liz, late!” Mrs. Josaline called as Liz walked into the junior section of clothes that she worked in.

“Sorry, first day of school for Heather,” Liz apologized, walking behind the register.

“Don’t let it happen again,” she said, walking out of the dressing room with an arm full of clothes, “put these away for me please dear.”

“Sure,” Liz said, taking the clothes and putting them on the proper racks. Even though she was almost 23, she still wore the clothes in the junior’s section, being very petite and thin. Having a baby didn’t affect her body in any way.

4 hours later she checked out and made her way back to the school to pick Heather up. Looking down at her watch she noticed that there were about 10 minutes left. She parked her car and walked into the building, glancing inside Heather’s classroom door. They were apparently in free time, and Liz smiled widely at the sight of her daughter playing blocks with the little brunette from earlier.

Max Evans looked up from his desk and out the door, noticing Ms. Parker standing there, watching her daughter. He got up and waked over to the door, opening it.

“Hello, Ms. Parker, class is almost done if you would wish to get your daughter,” he said politely, noticing that she had changed and ws wearing a more funky outfit, a black skirt and a sheer green top with a pink spaghetti strap tank top underneath.

“I’ll let her finish up, has she been good?” Liz asked.

“Very much so, you have a very intelligent daughter. She’s very friendly as well, her and Adriana clicked immediately,” Max said, smiling at the two.

“Did she cooperate at nap time? She’s never really been one for afternoon naps,” Liz said.

“Yes, fell asleep almost immediately,” Max said.

“That’s good! Hey baby!” Liz said, as Heather noticed her mother talking to Mr. Evans, and saying something to Adriana before both of them ran up to Liz. Liz knelt down to Heather’s level.

“Mommy, this is Adriana, she’s my bestest friend,” Heather said. Adriana smiled shyly.

“Why, hello Adriana, I’m Heather’s mommy, Liz,” Liz said, shaking Adriana’s tiny hand, “now, we have to go sweetie, don’t worry, you’ll come back tomorrow,” Liz said. Max smiled secretly. Liz. The name suited her perfectly.

“Ok, bye bye Adriana,” Heather said, hugging her new friend before going up in Liz’s arms with her lunch box and backpack on.

“Goodbye Heather!” Max called.

“Bye Mr. Evans!” Heather called, Liz waved and walked out of the classroom, leaving Max dazed.

lol, the father won't be revealed for a while...but glad you like this! Here's the next chapter!

Disclaimer: I don’t own anything
Author’s Note: I don’t particularly like this chapter much…I liked the last one best, but hopefully you guys will like it.

Chapter 2: Call me Max

“So Heather, I assume you enjoyed your first day of school?” Liz asked, as they drove back to the local Dairy Queen.

“Yes! We counted to 10…and we sang the al-fuh-bu-bet song,” Heather said, fumbling over alphabet.

“Mommy is very proud of you, taking a nap and being a good girl,” Liz said, smiling.

“I like Mr. Evans, he’s nice, and funny too. I think he likes you,” Heather said. Liz parked and looked over at Heather, raising her brow.

“Oh really? Why do you say that sweetie?” Liz asked, helping Heather unbuckle and get out of her booster seat.

“Because…he smiled at you, and Adriana said that when a boy smiles at a girl it means that he wants to marry her,” Heather said. Liz let out a hearty laugh, if only it was like that.

“Honey, that’s not how it works, he was just being friendly. Now, do you want chocolate or vanilla ice cream?” Liz asked, scooping Heather up.

“Chocolate,” she said, pointing to a picture of chocolate ice cream.

“Then chocolate it is. One kid’s size chocolate ice cream cone and one peanut buster parfait please,” she said to the teenage girl behind the counter.

A minute later she returned with the ice cream and Liz paid, thanking her.

“Now, we’re going to Auntie Maria’s house,” Liz said, referring to her best friend, Maria Deluca Guerin, who was close enough to be family.

“Is Uncle Michael gonna be there?” Heather asked excitedly, her face covered with chocolate ice cream.

“Yes sweetie, he is,” Liz said, wiping her face with a napkin before putting the car in gear and driving to Maria’s house. Maria worked with her most days at Nordstrom’s and on the days she didn’t, she sang at a local bar. They had been friends since high school in Los Angeles and moved to Roswell, New Mexico, after Heather’s birth, where Maria soon fell in love with Michael Guerin, and they were married 2 years later.

When they pulled up in the driveway Liz helped Heather get out once again after wiping her face clean, and then grabbed her own ice cream, which had started to melt, and walked in the cozy house.

“Liz!” Maria exclaimed, walking quickly up to her, her huge belly protruding from under her shirt.

“Hey Maria! You rang earlier and left a message telling me to come over, what’s the matter?” Liz asked. Maria NEVER left messages…NEVER. If no one was home, she’d try your cell, work and beeper, and if no one answered any, then she’d wait until later.

“Nothing serious, I just wanted you to come over and didn’t feel like waiting, I’m not in the best of shape these days,” Maria said, patting her stomach before sitting down.

“Heather, babe, why don’t you go in the basement and watch TV or play with the games?” Liz asked. Since in the past Heather came over so much, Maria baby sat her a lot before she became pregnant, Liz had bought toys that stayed in their house permanently.

“Ok mommy!” Heather said cheerfully, skipping down to the basement.

“I hope my daughter’s as good as yours,” Maria sighed. Liz smiled and started to eat her ice cream when she heard Heather shriek. She almost dropped her parfait, but caught it, and set it down before rushing down to the basement.

“Heather! What is it?” Liz exclaimed, running up to her and kneeling down in front of her, not noticing Michael and the other man standing there.

“Mommy…stop, I’m ok…it’s Mr. Evans!” Heather exclaimed, pointing behind Liz. Liz furrowed her brows together then stood up and turned around, to be met by none other than Mr. Evans, standing next to Michael.

“Hello Mr. Evans, you know Michael?” Liz asked curiously.

“Yes, we’ve been best friends since grade school, he’s just never been here when you were,” Michael said, taking another drink of his beer.

“Heather, go and play baby,” Liz said to Heather, who was grinning. Heather tugged on her mother’s arm before leaving. Liz knelt down and Heather came up to her ear.

“He likes you mommy, he’s smiling,” Heather whispered, luckily it was quietly. Liz smiled at her before shooing her off and turning back towards the men.

“So, you’ve known Mikey here for a long time Mr. Evans?” Liz asked.

“Liz? What the hell is going on down there?” Maria called from the top of the stairs.

“Maria! My daughter is down here thank you very much! And nothing, she just saw her teacher and was excited,” Liz called up to Maria.

“Max? Max you didn’t tell me that you teached!” Maria said crabbily, she had been like this a lot more lately.

“I’ll deal with her, you two talk or whatever, be right back,” Michael grunted, quickly going up the stairs.

“Yeah, actually, I’ve known him since about 3rd grade,” Max said, smiling.

“Very cool, I’ve known Maria since we were in diapers, back in Los Angeles,” Liz said, slightly scowling at the name.

“I see. So…call me Max, this Mr. Evans stuff is too long. Plus, I have to deal with it with the kids all day, I might as well have at least one adult call me by my first name,” Max said.

“Ok, Max it is. So Max, are you married?” Liz asked.

“No. I had a girlfriend, named Tess, but we recently broke up. Glad I did it too. I suppose you aren’t either. What about Heather’s father?” Max asked, gazing at the beautiful woman in front of him. She was far more beautiful than Tess ever could be. Liz’s beauty was all throughout her body, inside and out. Tess’ beauty was only skin deep.

“Dead,” Liz replied almost too quickly.

“I’m sorry,” Max replied, not sure on how to handle this situation.

“Don’t be,” Liz said as Michael came back down, “I’m going to go back upstairs. See you tomorrow Max.”

“Bye Ms. Parker!” Max replied, not using her first name.

“It’s Liz!” she exclaimed as she walked up the stairs. Max grinned as Michael started talking again.

Chapter 3: Pretty

“Ok, so explain this all to me again…you never knew Max was Michael’s best friend? How could you never have met him? He’s over here all the time, though I guess now that he’s a teacher, glad he felt it important enough to tell me, he won’t be coming by as much,” Maria said, sitting next to Liz on the couch, the guys still downstairs, but Heather taking another nap in the spare bedroom.

“I guess he just always came over when I wasn’t over here,” Liz said, shrugging. Maria’s eyes suddenly started to gleam, which Liz knew from experience, meant no good at all.

“I’m going to hook you 2 up. It’d be perfect! Plus, Max is just your type! Tall, dark, handsome…every girl’s dream man, except me of course,” Maria said quietly, so the guys wouldn’t hear.

“No…I’m not ready for another relationship,” Liz said, shaking her head.

“You haven’t been with anyone since Heather was conceived…oh, I’m sorry I just brought that up didn’t I?” Maria said quickly, noticing Liz’s eyes starting to tear up. Liz quickly swiped the tears away.

“S’ok, you didn’t mean to. Now, I think it’s time Heather and I get going, it’s already 7:00, and she has to be in bed at 8:30. Thanks for dinner,” Liz said, standing up and helping Maria up as well.

“Any time babe, any time, stop by tomorrow and tell me what happens at school,” Maria said, winking. Liz laughed and shook her head.

“Only you Maria, only you,” Liz said, walking quietly into the spare bedroom and carefully scooping Heather up in her arms. Maria gave Liz a friendly kiss on the cheek before escorting her and the sleeping Heather to the door.

“Bye,” she whispered to Liz before shutting the door. Liz placed Heather in the car and drove the both of them home, surprisingly, she was very tired, more tired than she had ever been this early.

Once at home, she changed Heather into her nightgown quickly and tucked her in, kissing her forehead softly before exiting the room and making her way to her room down the hall.

She quickly undressed before slipping in her comfortable bed and falling quickly to sleep.

“Mom-eeeeee!” Heather whined, shaking Liz’s arm. Liz opened her eyes and groaned.

“What time is it babe?” she asked, not wanting to wake up quite yet.

“I don’t know…the clock says 8 4 5, and you usually make me get up at 8 0 0,” Heather said, not able to read time, but able to read what numbers were.

“8:45!!! Oh no, I slept in, shoot! C’mon darling, let’s get you dressed, school started 15 minutes ago!” Liz exclaimed, practically flinging Heather into her room and throwing a jumper on her with a t-shirt underneath.

She took her lunch out of the fridge and grabbed Heather’s backpack, then her car keys and purse before dragging Heather out of the door.

“Mommy, what are you wearing?” Heather asked as her mother buckled her in. Liz looked down and almost wanted to scream. She was still in her spaghetti strap night shirt and pajama pants.

“Stay here Heather, mommy will be right back,” Liz said, running back inside and throwing on a pair of tight blue jeans and a blue halter top. She quickly ran a comb through her hair and slipped her sandals on before locking up and dashing back out to the car. They didn’t have time to walk today.

“Mommy’s sorry for rushing you honey, if you get hungry, just eat the banana in your lunch box, I’ll make sure Mr. Evans lets you,” Liz said, speeding down the road to the school, parking and running Heather up to the main office to sign her in. After this was done, she quickly escorted her to her classroom, fixed her dress and giving her a quick kiss before opening the classroom door.

“I’m so sorry Mr. Evans, I slept in late,” Liz said as Heather walked over to her seat and talked to Adriana.

“Don’t worry about it, they weren’t dong anything yet anyways, I let them socialize for the first 10 minutes or so of class, just to get it out of them,” Max said, taking in her appearance. Even if she HAD just wakened up, it sure didn’t show. She was still beautiful as ever.

“Thank you Mr. Evans, I’ll be back at 12:30,” Liz said, smiling before turning around to leave. She waved goodbye to Heather, and headed to the door.

“Wait, didn’t I ask you to call me Max?” Max asked softly, smiling.“I will, just not in front of your class,” Liz said softly, “you going by Maria’s house later?”

“Probably, bye,” Max said, escorting her out before turning his attention back to his class, who was staring at him. He chuckled nervously.

“Mr. Evans, is it true you want to marry Heather’s mommy? Cuz my mommy says that if a boy smiles at a girl, then they want to marry them,” Adriana asked innocently. Max shook his head and smiled.

“No Adriana, not that she isn’t very pretty, but I was just being friendly,” Max said to his young student.

“Ok,” Adriana replied.

“Now, let’s go over the alphabet again,” Max said turning to board.

Liz stood on the other side of the door blushing. Max thought she was pretty. She shook her head at her own pettiness and walked out to her car.

She turned on her radio and drove home; glad she didn’t have work today. The second she got home she took off her sandals, set her alarm and fell asleep on her bed. For some reason she was super tired, and there was no explanation to it. She just assumed it was sue to that time of the month.

Her alarm woke her up at 12:15, and she changed into a more comfortable pair of sweats and a stylish t-shirt, with her flip flops, then locking up, she walked to the school, feeling a million times better already.

She stood outside, with all of the other parents until the bell rang and all of the kids came running out.

“Mommy!!!” Heather exclaimed, jumping into her mother’s arms.

“Hey baby! Did you have a good day?” Liz asked, carrying her a little ways until she got too heavy.

“Yes, we drew pictures of our favoritist place; I drew our aparta-ma-ment, because it’s my favoritist place in the world, and we went over the al-fuh-bu-bet,” Heather said, showing Liz the picture proudly. Liz smiled. There was a tall building, and then a person with long brown hair and what looked like a dress on, and a shorter person with long blonde hair and a what appeared to be a jumper on.

“It’s beautiful honey!” Liz exclaimed, kissing Heather on the cheek, “what do you want to do this weekend?”

“I want to go to Auntie Maria’s,” Heather said.

“Maybe, I’ll ask her later when we go over,” Liz said, unlocking her front door and walking in, “go pack just in case she says you can stay over tonight.”

“Okay!” Heather said happily. She really liked staying over there; Auntie Maria helped her make paper dolls and played dress up with her, but not as much lately since she was going to have a baby. Uncle Michael played go fish with her, and he told her funny jokes, and he took her to the video store to rent her favorite movies. Besides her mommy, they were her favorite old people. Auntie Maria, Uncle Michael, and now…possibly Mr. Evans. All the other old people she knew were mean and smelled funny.

“I’m done mommy!” Heather said, pulling a plastic bag with undies, a shirt and socks, and her toothbrush, all the stuff mommy said she needed to pack whenever she stayed over.

“Okay, let’s go,” Liz said, and they made their way to the car.

Chapter 4: Unexpected Call

“Us? Mind her spending the night? Never, go get her bag and we’ll start the fun!” Maria exclaimed, tousling Heather’s blonde locks.

“Thanks Ria, be right back sweetie pie,” Liz said smiling down at Heather before quickly walking out to the car and grabbing her overnight bag, and noticing a car pull up and Michael and Max get out.

“Hey Liz!” Michael said waving and locking up the car.

“Hey Michael, hey Max,” Liz said before walking back inside, “here you go sugar, now, be a good girl, and if you need anything, just call mommy and I’ll be back here in 10 minutes, love you, bye,” Liz said, giving Heather a big hug and kiss on the cheek.

“Buh Bye mommy, love you,” Heather said, making Liz smile.

“Love you too, bye Maria,” Liz said.

“Bye Chica, see you tomorrow,” Maria said as Liz left.

“So, having mother’s night out?” Max asked, standing on the porch next to Michael.

“Maybe, I’ll actually probably just stay home and watch a few movies…just relax, bye,” Liz said to Max before leaving. She drove to the local Burger King and picked herself up an early dinner, seeing how it was only 3:00.

“Time to relax…or not,” Liz said, groaning as the phone rang when she was at home, watching her favorite movie, A Walk to Remember.

“Hello?” she asked into the receiver.

“Hey, Liz…um…I got your number yesterday…but it seemed like you weren’t doing anything tonight…so…do you maybe want to see a movie with me?” Max asked. Liz froze solid. Max was calling her. MAX was calling her and he was asking her out on A DATE!!!!

“Hello?” Max asked when she didn’t reply.

“Oh, sorry, that sounds great, pick me up at 7?” Liz asked nervously.

“Sure thing, later,” Max said, hanging up. Liz set the phone down with a dreamy look on her face.

“YES YES YES YES YES!!!” she squealed. She looked at the clock. Shoot, it was only 3:30, “might as well finish the movie.”

Bad choice. When the movie was done, as always when she watched it, her eyes were puffy and red and she was sniffing uncontrollably. It was now 6:00, so she jumped in the shower to clean herself up, and then quickly dried her hair. 6:45. He’d be here in 15 minutes and he wasn’t even dressed!

Liz walked quickly into her room and threw open her closet.

“Pink? No. Blue? No. Black? Waaaaaay no. Green? YES!!” Liz exclaimed, taking out her pale green sheer blouse, under it she put a white spaghetti strapped tank top, and a blue jean, knee length skirt. To top it off she put on some tan pumps and put her hair in a half ponytail, then put her makeup on.

“Where is he?” she asked herself, pacing the living room. It was 7:05. He was late. What if she was getting stood up? She should have known he would….the doorbell! She knew he’d never stand her up!
Liz collected herself before walking over to the door as calmly as possible and opened it.

“Hey Max,” she said, smiling at him.

“Whoa, you look….amazing,” Max said, handing her a bouquet of roses. Liz put her nose up to them and inhaled.

“They are beautiful, come on in while I put them in some water,” Liz said, walking to the kitchen to put them in a vase. Max walked in the house and looked around. It was simple, yet pretty. Child proof obviously. He walked over to the mantle and looked at the various pictures scattered across it. There was a picture of Liz and Heather at the beach, a picture of Liz in front of the apartment with Heather in a stroller, a picture of Liz and two elder people that he assumed to be her parents, and a picture of Maria and Michael at their wedding. The wedding he couldn’t make it to because of his business. Damn business. Maybe he wouldn’t known Liz sooner if he could have made it to the wedding.

“All done, ah I see you found the pictures,” Liz said, coming up and standing beside Max, who was wearing a button down shirt and a pair of slacks.

“Yes, Heather is very pretty, as are you. She looks so much like you. Her eyes, her smile. The only thing that isn’t yours is her hair,” Max said.

“Yeah…” Liz said abruptly, not wanting to talk about it.

“Oh, I’m sorry if I brought up something you didn’t want to talk about,” Max said apologetically.

“It’s no problem, now, shall we go?” Liz asked.

“Absolutely, do you mind if we see the movie Finding Neverland?” Max asked as they got in his car.

“Not at all, I wanted to see that anyways, so I guess it all works out,” Liz said in reply.

“2 tickets for Finding Neverland please,” Max said. The ticket person gave them their tickets and Max paid, then he bought them popcorn and such.

They went into the theatre and sat down, and the movie came on.

Halfway into it Max took a risk and put his arm over her seat. Liz was surprised by this, but she liked the feel, so she leaned up again his shoulder.

“That was such a good movie, but it was sad also!” Liz said as they walked out of the movie theatre, Liz dabbing her eyes slightly, “I am such a sucker for sad movies.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Max said, smiling at her. He was happy that she was warming up to him without much hesitation.

“Yeah, but I’m REALLY bad, you should have seen me earlier after I watched A Walk to Remember,” Liz said, letting out a laugh as she scooted into the front seat.

“You should see my sister Isabel, it’s like a waterfall,” Max said, putting the car in gear and exiting the parking lot.

“You have a sister? That’s cool. I wish I had siblings sometimes,” Liz said, leaning her head against the seat.

“You should meet her, you two would click right away,” Max said as they pulled up in front of Liz’s apartment complex.

“That would be cool. So, I guess I’ll see you Monday, unless you go to Maria’s tomorrow,” Liz said.

“I might be there, bye Liz, thanks for tonight,” Max said, helping her out of the car and walking her to her door.

“No, thank YOU Max, if you hadn’t have called, I’d still be in there watching sappy movies and crying my eyes out,” Liz said. Then she did something that surprised Max, she leaned in and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before waving and going in her apartment.

Max smiled all the way back for the car. Was it possible that he was truly falling for his student’s mother? Obviously.

Chapter 5: New Additions

“So then you kissed him?” Maria said excitedly the next day when Liz came to pick up Heather.

“Just on the cheek,” Liz said modestly. Maria shook her head.

“Chica, you still kissed him, and that makes you one step below an OFFICIAL couple!” Maria squealed, “I’m so glad that Heather got into his class, otherwise you’d probably never had met him!”

“Shh…the guys just got here,” Liz said quietly, “Heather, are you almost ready?”

“Yes mommy, I just gotsa brush my teef,” Heather said with her toothbrush already in her mouth. Liz smiled and nodded.

“She’s so adorable,” Maria sighed. She suddenly froze and clutched her large belly, “L…Liz…it’s time!”

“Ok…um…um…omigod….MICHAEL!!!” Liz exclaimed, running outside and grabbing him roughly. She dragged him inside where Maria was clearly in pain and was taking deep breaths.

“Ok, Liz, give me your keys, I need to take your car, and you can take mine!” Michael exclaimed rushing over to Maria and helping her stand up. With much effort from both of the men, they got her to Liz’s car, where she had spread a blanket out across the seat.

“Chica, don’t leave me,” Maria gasped.

“Ok, Max, can you drive Heather to the hospital?” Liz asked, which was big for her, Liz barely trusted anyone with her daughter.

“I’ll get her there, don’t worry,” he said, taking Heather’s hand, who looked wide eyed and scared at her Auntie Maria.

“Sweetie, you be a good girl, mommy will see you in a few minutes, be good for Mr. Evans,” Liz said, giving her a kiss before getting in the passenger’s side of the front seat and taking Maria’s hand while Michael sped down the road towards the local hospital.

“My wife…she’s in labor!” Michael exclaimed to the people in the emergency room when they pulled up to the hospital. They rushed out to the car with a gurney and when Liz and Michael were inside, Maria’s doctor was waiting for them.

“Right on time, she was due tomorrow,” he said, ushering them to a waiting room, “Mr. Guerin, you may come with me, but your friend has to stay here,” the doctor said, ushering Michael into the delivery room. Liz smiled at Michael as he left and sat down, joined later by Heather and Max.

“Mommy! What’s the matter with Auntie Maria?” Heather asked, perched in Liz’s lap.

“Sweetie, you know that baby we saw in the park, the one in the stroller? Well, Auntie Maria is going to have a baby just like that one, except it’s going to be a little girl,” Liz said.

“Like me?” Heather asked.

“Yes sugar, like you,” Liz said, messing with her hair.

“Will Auntie Maria still love me?” Heather asked, scared that this new baby would mean that Auntie Maria wouldn’t want to spend time with her anymore.

“Of course. She won’t be able to play with you as much, but she’ll still love you just the same,” Liz said, hugging her.

Max watched how Liz handled Heather and smiled. Liz had such a way of calming Heather down. They were so close, and sometimes he wished he had taken the time to be this close with his family.

“IT’S A GIRL!!!” Michael exclaimed, running into the room with a cap and gown covering him over his clothes.

Liz smiled and handed Heather over to Max before getting up and hugging Michael.

“Congratulations Mike, you’ll be a great father,” Liz said.

“There’s better news…there are TWO girls, we had twins! Obviously the doctor missed one in the ultrasound, but there are two sure enough. Guess what we named them?” Michael said mischievously.

“Please don’t tell me you named them after some football players or something,” Liz said, laughing.

“Nope, the oldest by 2 minutes, her name is…Elizabeth Isabel Guerin, nad the younger one is Amy Heather Guerin,” Michael said, laughing at the look on Liz’s face.

“You name your oldest after me?” Liz exclaimed.

“Maria insisted. She’ll go by Lizzie or Beth though, just so as not to confuse anybody,” Michael replied, “would you like to see them?”

“Yes! Can Heather come if she’s careful?” Liz asked.

“Of course,” Michael said, handing Liz a gown and cap, and getting a smaller one from the doctor for Heather.

“We’re going to see the babies sweetie,” Liz said to Heather, putting the gown and cap on herself, then Heather, “you have to be gentle though, and extra quiet.” Heather nodded, wide eyed as Liz led her in the room with Maria, holding the twins.

“Hey Chica, I did it! Here’s Lizzie, and this one is Amy,” Maria said, handing Lizzie over to her namesake.

“She has you eyes and Michael’s hair! Heather, this is Lizzie,” Liz said, kneeling down a bit so Heather could see. Heather looked at her and hesitantly reached her hand out, finally putting it on the baby’s head.

“Baby Lizzie,” she said, stroking the soft skin. Liz smiled at her daughter, and then down at Lizzie before giving her back to Maria. She looked out the window and saw Max. He waved and then pointed to his watch, signaling that he had to go. Maria saw this and smiled.

“Go say bye, I’ll watch Heather for a minute,” she said. Liz smiled and exited the room.

Chapter 6: Butterflies

“Hey,” Liz said, shutting the door behind herself.

“Hi, congratulations…on being a namesake I mean,” Max said, glancing at Michael. He took the hint and Liz swore she saw him wink at Max before going into the delivery room with Maria, the twins and Heather.

“Did he just….wink at you?” Liz asked, furrowing her brows and pointing to Michael then Max.

“I guess he did,” Max said, grinning mischievously.

“What are you boys up to?” Liz asked, crossing her arms, but smirking none-the-less.

Max didn’t say anything; he just leaned in and quickly kissed her on the lips.

“I have to get going bye,” Max said, waving before quickly walking out of the room. Liz stood in the same spot until it hit what had just happened. Max Evans kissed her. MAX EVANS KISSED HER!!!

Inside she was jumping for joy, but deep down in her heart she wondered if she could really trust this man. Relationships weren’t exactly her forte in life.

“You sneaky little….Michael!” Liz exclaimed playfully, going into the room he was in. Michael smirked and hugged her. Heather tugged at Liz’s skirt, so Liz picked her up.

“Mommy, I want ice cream,” she said.

“Then mommy will get you some ice cream. Maria, I need to get going, I’ll be back later though,” Liz said, walking up to Maria and kissing her cheek.

“Bye Chica thanks again,” Maria said warmly. Liz smiled at her before leaving the room and heading towards her SUV, to find Max standing beside it.

“Max? What are you doing here?” Liz asked, glad it was dark so it could hide the blush that was slowly rising up her neck at the remembrance of his kiss.

“I um…I need a ride,” Max said. Then it dawned upon her. He had taken Michael’s car, and left his at his house.

“Hop in,” she said, rolling her eyes while buckling Heather in.

“I can’t believe its only noon,” Max said as they drove down the road.

“I can’t believe Maria just had twins, one named after me!” Liz said in disbelief. Max laughed at her statement and moved his hand, landing coincidentally on her hand. Liz’s laughter stopped and she looked in the rear-view mirror to check on Heather, who was grinning at her mother as if saying “I told you so.”

Liz quickly moved her hand and concentrated on the road for the next minute. When they finally pulled up in front of Maria’s house, Max got out and walked over to Liz’s side of the car. She unrolled her window and he leaned in.

“I’m sorry if I made you nervous,” he whispered. Liz was about to say, nervous isn’t the right word. You make butterflies come to my stomach every time you’re near. But she decided against that, seeing how she had her 5 year old daughter in the back that would never let it live down if she admitted that she liked Max.

“It’s alright, see you Monday?” she said, it came out as more of a question than a statement.

“Always will,” Max replied nonchalantly before smiling and walking over to his car. Liz took a deep breath before backing her car slowly and driving home, stopping by Dairy Queen first.

“What do you want to do tonight sweet pea?” Liz asked after they finished their ice cream.

“Um….watch Barney!” Heather exclaimed. Liz barely held back a groan. Barney was Heather’s FAVORITE show, and Liz absolutely HATED it.
“Barney sounds fun!” Liz said, sucking it up for the sole purpose that Heather was the love of her life. Literally. A man could come and go, but Heather would stay with her forever…hopefully.

She popped the tape in and plopped down on the couch beside Heather, whose eyes would be glued to the TV screen for the next hour. Liz smiled at her and tousled her hair before getting up to change clothes. She pulled on a pair of casually sweats and a white tank-top, nothing too fancy, but it was her most comfortable outfit. She pulled her French braid out and let the curls fall over her shoulders before sweeping it all up into a ponytail. Right as she slipped her slippers on, the doorbell rang.

“Heather, don’t you dare open that door!” Liz exclaimed, putting her other slipper on before walking quickly to the door and opening it.

Shit.

It was Max.

And she was wearing the frumpiest outfit in her wardrobe.

“Max…what are you doing here?” Liz asked, truly surprised. He smiled and there they went, the butterflies started zipping around her stomach.

“Just thought I’d stop by to keep you company, Michael told me what Heather’s favorite movie was, and I guess I’m psychic, because I thought she would be watching this, and you’d need a level of maturity if you didn’t want to go insane…and I’m rambling again aren’t I?” he asked, laughing.

“Yeah…but come in, nonetheless, we can all watch Barney!” Liz exclaimed in a false cheery voice.

“Mommy! Shhhh!” Heather exclaimed from the living room. Liz pursed her lips together to keep from laughing, but cracked and she started to giggle silently.

“Are you sure they didn’t spike your ice cream at Dairy Queen? I always knew they were suspicious,” Max said as they sat down at the kitchen table.

“No, I’m perfectly fine,” Liz replied, smiling, “about…today…” Now was the time to do this. She couldn’t wait any longer.

Ok….sorry it was so short, but I’m pressed for time, hope you like :)

Chapter 7: The Kiss

“Oh, about that kiss?” Max asked, sipping on the coffee Liz gave him.

“Yeah…what’s it mean?” Liz asked, sitting opposite of Max so that she could clearly watch Heather.

“I don’t exactly know yet,” Max replied. Liz furrowed her brows together and gazed into his hazel eyes. They were so beautiful and…..whoa wake up Liz; he’s sitting in front of you and probably notices that you’ve started to drool.

“Neither do I,” Liz countered quickly to cover up for her space out. Max nodded and seemed to study her for a minute. He set down his coffee cup and glanced at his watch.

“I have to get going, there’s a teacher’s meeting at the school in about 10 minutes,” Max said, smiling at Liz. She nodded her head in understanding before gathering up his cup and walked over to the sink to rinse it out.

“Have a nice day Max,” Liz said, seeing him out. He slowly reached a hand out, as if not sure, but then rested it on her face, gazing into her eyes, before mumbling a quick ‘bye’ and leaving.

Over the next week Liz’s routine was very much the same. Nothing varied out of the norm. She’d wake up, drop Heather off, say a quick hello to Max, leave for work, come back at 12:30, say a quick hi and bye to Max, then her and Heather would go to Dairy Queen, then they would go to Maria’s house to help out with the twins and give Michael and Maria a break. Once or twice she ran into Max while she was at their house, but they didn’t really talk. This changed the following Monday.

“Heather, sweet pea, we’re going to be late for school!” Liz exclaimed, throwing on a pair of black Capri’s and a red tank top covered by a black zip up sweater.

“I’m ready mommy!” Heather said, walking into Liz’s room, dressed with her lunch box and back pack in hand and on back.

“Look at you, you’re such a big girl,” Liz said, smiling at her before taking her hand and rushing down the street towards the school.

“Bye mommy!” Heather said, running off to meet her friend. Heather had told Liz during their brisk walk that she didn’t need her to walk into the classroom with her. Her little girl was growing up so fast right in front of her eyes; it made her proud, but also made her sad in the pit of her stomach.

“Whatcha looking at?” Max asked suddenly behind her. Liz jumped a little and looked at Max.

“Oh it’s you, you scared me!” Liz said, laughing, “Just looking at Heather.”

“I see, we haven’t talked much lately,” Max said, stepping around so that he was facing her.

“I’ve been busy with work,” Liz shrugged. She chanced to divert her gaze from Heather and looked at Max to find he was looking at her.

“So…” Liz said, at loss of words.

“So…I have to get back to the classroom,” Max said, putting his hands in his pockets.

“Yeah, I have to get to work, bye,” Liz said turning around and beginning to walk away from the awkward moment. Max reached out and grabbed her arm.

“Wait, do you maybe you know…?” he started to ask.

"Sure! 7:00?” Liz said, knowing already what he was going to ask.

“Ok, see you later,” Max said, letting go of her arm and walking back into the classroom.

“Am I falling for him?” Liz whispered excitedly to herself as she changed for work. It wasn’t like he wasn’t attractive…he was gorgeous. The way he was flirting with her, it seemed like he liked her too, but it could be an act…it’s not like she hadn’t been tricked before. No, don’t think like that. Max would never do anything to hurt her. At least she hoped he wouldn’t.

“Liz? Liz! Snap out of it!” Maria snapped later as Liz was spacing while talking with Maria.

“Oh, sorry, I’m being a space cadet today,” Liz said, laughing it off. Maria got a wicked gleam in her eyes.

“You have a date later don’t you…? Don’t you!!” she exclaimed. She knew Liz too well. When she was younger, whenever she got a date, she’d turn into a major space cadet until the date, “Max asked you out again?”

“Yeah…” Liz slowly said, blushing.

“This confirms it!! You are a couple!! I saw him kissing you at the hospital last Sunday!” Maria exclaimed.

“No…we don’t know what’s going on between us yet,” Liz said, giggling.

“If he kisses you goodbye tonight, it’s official. And the second you walk into your apartment, call me. I don’t care what time it is. By the way, you can leave Heather here tonight, they don’t have school tomorrow, remember, it’s some school teacher work day,” Maria said.

“Thanks. Are you sure…with the twins to take care of?” Liz said.

“Absolutely. Plus, Heather adores them and loves helping me with them. Heather, do you want to spend the night at my house tonight?” Maria called to Heather, who was watching TV.

“Yes!!” Heather exclaimed; her face lighting up with joy. Liz smiled at her daughter’s apparent joy.

“Ok, well mommy needs to get going, you have some clothes and stuff here sweet pea, love you,” Liz said, standing up and giving Heather a tight hug before leaving. On her way out, in another moment of spacing out, she bumped into someone, almost falling down, but they reached a strong hand out and grasped her waist, balancing her.

“I’m sorry,” Liz said, laughing. She looked up at the person who caught her and her body froze, “hey Max.”

“Hey, you need to watch where you’re going,” he teased. Liz noticed that his arm still rested around her stomach, and she liked its feeling. All of a sudden he was leaning down.

He took his hand from around her waist and put it on her cheek, the other hand resting on her back. Her breath hitched as she stared into his intense eyes. If she closed the gap, that meant she was ready to trust another man. Ready to move on.

The argument in her mind ended when she leaned up and sealed her lips on top of his. Max kissed her back at first with some hesitation, but that disappeared a moment later and turned into hunger.

Liz moved her hands up to his head, where she ran them through his hair, kissing him intensely. She could feel his tongue resting against her lips, as if asking her permission.

Realizing that this totally wasn’t the right time for this, she pulled back.

“Not here Max…my daughter is inside, so is Maria, who will go berserk if she sees us out here like this,” Liz whispered.

“Ok…so does this make us…you know…a couple?” Max asked, a smirk forming on his face.

“I guess so. Are we still on for 7:00?” Liz asked, gazing into his eyes.

“Absolutely. Oh, dress formally, we’re going out to a restaurant,” Max said.

“Ooooo!! I love dressing up, I better go, see you later,” Liz said flirtatiously, suddenly feeling like a giddy school girl who had just received her first kiss. Max quickly pecked her on the lips before shooing her off.

Author’s Note: Thanks for the replies!!! Just to let you guys know…I’ve never particularly like writing out stuff…I prefer dialogue…like, I like thinking about it in movie reference…it’s easier, that’s why my stories might seem rushed when there isn’t dialogue, details don’t like me very much.

Chapter 8: Car Nap

Liz tossed her clothes aside piece by piece trying to fins the perfect dress. She went through her red satin, pink velvet, black polyester…

“C’mon!” she exclaimed, rummaging through the closet, “YES!!” she pulled out the lavender silk sleeveless floor length gown, with sequins embroidered here and there. She threw on a pair of panty-hoes and then slipped the gown carefully up her body.

She quickly did her makeup and put her hair up in a bun, then after putting on her favorite diamond earrings and her gold link bracelet, she was done.

Liz stood in front of her floor length mirror and twirled around. Perfect. At least it was as good as she was ever going to look.
Right at 7:00 she heard the doorbell and grabbed her small black purse.

“Max!” Liz greeted excitedly, after opening the door for him.
“Wow…you look…gorgeous,” Max said, twirling her around. She laughed and grabbed her purple shawl before stepping outside.

“You clean up well yourself,” she replied as they walked down the steps towards his car.

“Thank you…I think,” Max said making Liz laugh more as they settled in the car. They drove in silence, Liz too excited about where Max was taking her, and Max too nervous that he’d say something stupid.

“Where are we going??” Liz asked half an hour later, as they were still driving.

“You’ll see, be patient, we’ll be there in about 15 minutes,” Max said, smiling at her quickly.

“Meanie,” Liz replied playfully, setting her head back and resting her eyes. When she felt the car slow to a stop she opened her eyes and looked out.

“Here we are Piccola Italia, Little Italy, the best Italian restaurant in the state, at least that’s what Maria told me,” Max said, helping Liz out of the car.

“Maria helped you! And she didn’t tell me?!?!?” Liz exclaimed.

“Well, it was meant to be a surprise,” Max said, laughing.

“I’m just surprised she didn’t spill, she isn’t very good at keeping secrets,” Liz said as Max escorted her inside. The second they walked in Liz gasped. It was the most beautiful restaurant she had ever laid eyes on. It was beautiful with an antique Italian design, and structure.

“Evans, Max,” Max said to the seating attendant.

“Right this way sir!” He said, grabbing two menus and leading them to a little table among other people, “your waiter will be out shortly.”

“This is so beautiful, thank you so much for asking me out,” Liz said after they ordered their food and the waiter brought out the wine they ordered.

“Trust me, it was MY pleasure,” Max replied, deciding to take a risk and leaning across the table to take her hand.

Liz smiled at his sudden action. It wasn’t unwanted at all. Actually, for the last few days, she had been secretly wondering what it would feel like when he ran his fingers through her hair…or when he kissed her neck…

“Liz?” Max asked a moment later as she seemed to daze out. She blinked at looked at him apologetically.

“I’m sorry, you’ll have to excuse me from time to time when I space out…I have a bad habit of doing that,” Liz said, blushing slightly, and squeezing Max’s hand.

“Spaghetti and Meatballs, here you go sir, and minestrone soup with a side salad,” their waiter said, interrupting the moment.

“Thank you very much,” Max said, putting his napkin in his lap and cutting into his spaghetti. Liz looked hungrily down at her soup and started eating.

She almost moaned in pleasure it was so good. Waaaaaaay better than some other Italian restaurants she had been to in the past.
“Ohmigod this is sooooo good!” she said erotically. Max looked at her, startled by the tone of her voice.

“Y…yea, it looks good, and my spaghetti’s good also,” Max replied, noticing the stiffness forming in between his legs.

“So…have you ever been here before?” Liz asked, as she picked through her salad.

“Yeah, actually…with Tess,” he mumbled the last part quietly, but Liz caught it nonetheless.

“Oh, really,” Liz replied, looking down at her bowl, “listen; she’s not with you anymore, so why don’t we just act like adults here?”

“You’re right, I’m sorry, I just thought you might be a little…unnerved at the mention of Tess on out date. I brought her here for our one month anniversary a while ago…we broke up 2 weeks afterward,” Max said, shrugging it off dismissively.

“Ok,” Liz replied nonchalantly, but inside she was bubbling, he brought Tess here after one month…but he was bringing her here after just ONE DATE!!!

“I hope you enjoyed yourself, I did,” Max said later as they walked back out to the car.

“Very much so, thank you…so, it’s still moderately early…are we doing anything else?” Liz asked, settling herself into the front seat as he sat down next to her and started the engine.

“Of course, next stop, Roswell City Park!” Max said, Liz looked over at him and giggled.

“You know how to make a girl smile don’t you?” Liz asked, leaning her head on his shoulder.

“Well, you know…I try,” Max replied as she closed her eyes and silently dozed off. When they were within seeing distance of the park, Max looked down at Liz, who was still asleep and smiled, he’d just cut tonight short. He drove past the park and down a couple of blocks until they were at her apartment and moved a piece of hair from her forehead.

“Hey…why are we at my place?” Liz asked confusedly as she woke up.

“You were asleep, so I assumed you were tired, and we should just call it a night,” Max replied.

“No…I don’t want to yet…it’s only nine. Hmmm…why don’t you just come up to my place?” Liz asked, sitting up straighter.

“You sure?” Max asked, unbuckling all the same.

“Sure, we can chill and watch a movie…or something,” Liz said, adding the or something at the last second in a breathy voice that wasn’t intentional, but came on her when at the last second Max leaned over and placed his mouth firmly onto hers, devouring it. Liz was startled at first, and didn’t move for a moment, but then woke up and snaked her arms around his neck, deepening the kiss further by opening her mouth and allowing him to explore inside.

He moved his hungry lips down to her neck and gently began to suck on it.

“Oh Maaaaax!” Liz moaned. She unlatched her body from his and took his hands, “let’s go upstairs.”

Chapter 9: The phone call

Max carried Liz up the stairs to her apartment doors, while in the meanwhile, kissing her hungrily.

“Keys,” he grunted when they stood in front of her door. She dug in her purse and handed him her keys, placing her mouth back on his, missing the warmth of it. Max fumbled with the lock, on account of not being able to see it, but it finally clicked open and they stumbled into her apartment and onto the couch. Max sat down and placed Liz besides him, kissing her. She soon moved so that she was straddling him and kissing down his neck, and she slowly unbuttoned his shirt.

Max felt like he was in heaven. This gorgeous, sweet, caring woman was practically all over him. Once Max’s shirt was off all the way Liz broke apart from Max for a second and placed her hands on his well shaped chest, running them across it seductively, until Max couldn’t take it anymore, and moved his lips up to capture her’s.

His hands slowly slid up her waist and back up to her zipper, it was half way undone when Liz looked down at him. She moved her hand to his face and gave him a sweet, lingering kiss, ready for whatever was about to come.

Then the worst thing possible happened.

The phone rang.

“Dammit!” Liz cursed, not stopping her kissing, “just ignore it…they’ll leave a message,” she mumbled. 3 rings later Maria’s voice came on the answering machine.

“Chica…are you there? If you are either Max is there with you…you go girl! Or you finished early…I’ll kill him…So…if you aren’t…tell me how fa…” she didn’t get to finish her statement because, with a very red face, Liz jumped off a blushing Max and ran over to the phone.

“MARIA!!!!!” she squealed, sitting down on the couch next to Max, and zipping herself back up, “you know…certain people could hear your message!”

“Oh my god, he’s there isn’t he??? Isn’t he!!! Ohhhh!! Its official isn’t it!!! I’m so happy for you Chica! So…what exactly WERE you doing?” Maria asked as Liz swatted Max away, giggling when he started to kiss her neck.

“Um…that’s none of your business,” Liz replied, smiling secretly.

“Sure…uh huh…you’ll tell me tomorrow right?” Maria said quickly.

“Of course…goodbye Maria,” Liz said, hanging up before Maria could respond. Liz looked at Max and broke out laughing.

“I’m sooo sorry you had to hear one of Maria’s messages, she barely leaves any, but they are hilarious when she does,” Liz said, moving a strand of hair out of her face.

“It’s no problem…hey, I think we should just…you know….call it a night,” Max said unsurely.

“Yea, I was thinking that too, but are we still cool?” Liz asked.

“Of course, as a matter of fact, Friday night do you want to go on a midnight picnic with me?” Max asked, taking her hands in his and kissing them.

“Sure, I’ll see you at school,” Liz said, leaning over and kissing him briefly, but meaningfully, before walking him to the door, where she received one last sweet kiss before he left.

She waited until she saw his car leave before running into her room, throwing the dress off and putting a shirt and jeans on, and then racing out to her car, driving to Maria’s place.

“I knew it! Come in and spill!” Maria exclaimed the second she opened her door.

“The guys aren’t here right?” Liz asked, coming in and sitting on the couch.

“Nope, and all the kids are asleep. Spill!” Maria quietly exclaimed.
An hour later Liz had told Maria every detail of her date and Maria was grinning at Liz.

“I told you he digged you. I’m so happy for you Chica…finally finding a guy you can trust. Sometimes I wish Michael were as romantic as you say Max is,” Maria said, sighing.

“Don’t worry Ria…he is just still in shock of being a father, and I don’t think he’s ready to have more than 2 kids yet,” Liz said, giggling a bit as Maria playfully hit her.

“Why don’t you stay the night? It’s almost 11, and you look exhausted,” Maria said.

“That’s a good idea, I’ll sleep on the couch,” Liz said as they both got up and pulled the couch bed out.

“Goodnight Chica, see you in the morning,” Maria said, giving her a quick hug before turning off the light and heading to her own bedroom.

Chapter 10: Meet the Parents…and Isabel part 1

“Ooooof!” Liz mumbled as something disturbed her more than peaceful sleep by plopping itself onto her stomach and knocking the wind out of her. She grudgingly opened her eyes, blinking a couple times from the bright sunlight.

“Mommy!!!” Heather exclaimed, bouncing on her stomach, knocking even more wind out of Liz.

“Sweetie…what time is it?” Liz groaned out, moving Heather beside her and taking a second to breathe in deeply.

“8 2 0,” Heather said proudly, and pointing to the digital clock that was placed besides Liz. Liz moaned and slowly threw the sheets off herself, doing a few cat stretches before shaking her head and sliding off the bed, “did you have fun last night sweetie?” She grabbed a robe Maria had obviously retrieved for her, she must’ve picked the stuff up from her house earlier. Her fuzzy robe, slippers, and her outfit. It was so totally a Maria outfit. Jean mini-skirt and a pink halter top, with some bangles and knee high boots.

“Mommy, why did Auntie Maria bring you gloveses?” Heather asked, taking her leather boots and slipping them on her arms. Liz let out a hearty laugh and brought Heather over to sit on her lap.

“Those are mommy’s shoes sweetie, now, why don’t you go get dressed while mommy takes a shower?” Liz asked, sliding Heather off her lap and picking up her own clothes, heading to the guest bathroom.

“Ah, finally woke up Chica? You aren’t usually one to sleep in,” Maria said, passing Liz in the hallway.

“Well, seeing how I had a busy night last night…I guess you could say I was tired,” Liz replied, smirking, “could you help Heather get dressed…you know just make sure she doesn’t put her underwear on, on top of her dress.”

“Will do, go freshen up,” Maria said, smiling at Liz before walking past.

“Hey Maria…” Liz said before Maria completely disappeared, “NEVER call me again while I’m supposed to be on a date…now, go on,” Liz said, smiling impishly. Maria grinned back and rolled her eyes before walking away.

Liz sighed and stepped into the bathroom, quickly disrobing and taking a shower, then getting out and putting on the interesting outfit Maria picked out. She loved each garment…just not together.

“Maria!!! Where’s your makeup?” Liz exclaimed, sticking her head outside the bathroom, hair down around her waist.

“Makeup? It’s behind the mirror!” Maria exclaimed. Liz put on some mascara, eyeliner, blush and lip gloss before exiting the bathroom.
The second Liz walked out Lizzie and Amy started crying. She walked to the nursery while Maria finished up with Heather and picked up Lizzie. She stopped crying instantly and just gazed up at Liz. Maria bustled into the room and over to Amy.

“This is weird…she just…stopped crying,” Liz said, taking a bottle from Maria and feeding it to Lizzie, “it’s like we have a connection.”

“Well, you are her namesake…but maybe there’s just something about you that babies love. Heather was like this also if I’m correct,” Maria said while feeding a hungry Amy.

“Yeah,” Liz replied as Lizzie sucked the bottle dry, then her eyelids slowly drooped and she was fast asleep again, “looks like you got your wish when you hoped for girls as well tempered as Heather.”

“Well she is….my darling Amy here…may be taking after her papa, little temper this darling has,” Maria replied, when Amy was done feeding and like Lizzie, fell asleep. Maria placed her in the crib next to Lizzie and watched as they slept peacefully.

“I really hope you aren’t going to make them REALLY call Michael papa…he’ll go nuts…and so will I,” Liz said as they sat at the kitchen bar, drinking coffee.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be mom. Plain and simple. He’ll be dad,” Maria said, smiling.

“Who’ll be dad?” Michael asked, walking into the house with another of his friends, Kyle Valenti, Liz knew him very well, he came over all the time, and about a year or so back, they ALMOST were a couple, but decided it would be too awkward. He walked in with his girlfriend, a girl Liz had never seen, next to him.

“Hey Kyle,” Liz said, “hey Mike.”

“Hey Liz, this is Isabel Evans, we’ve been going out for a while,” Kyle said.

“Evans…as in Max Evans?” Liz exclaimed, jumping out of her seat.

“Yeah…” Isabel said stiffly a look on her face that showed she thought Liz was insane.

“Oh…sorry, just wondering…Max and I are sort of…dating,” she said in almost a whisper. Max had told her Isabel was sort of an ice queen, but it was even more intimidating up close.

“Oh really? So you’re this girl he talks incessantly about. Liz Parker. I heard your daughter is in his class…divorce?” Isabel asked, gazing down at her.

“Never married…Heather’s father…died,” Liz said quietly, quickly glancing over at Maria. Isabel rolled her eyes and looked to Kyle.

“Kyle, what did we come here for again?” Isabel asked, her voice changing slightly while talking to him…it wasn’t as cold anymore.

“Michael is letting me borrow some of his tools, since I busted some of mine,” Kyle said, draping an arm around Isabel.

“Well, nice meeting you!” Liz said cheerfully, but she was really unnerved inside. They came back out with the tools and Isabel just sort of…glared at her.

“I suppose, bye,” Isabel replied.
“Bye Liz,” Kyle said, waving before they left.

“What is her problem?” Maria asked for Liz the second the door was closed.

“Izzy has always been somewhat of an ice queen…her and Max were adopted you know…I guess it’s just in her nature,” Michael said. Michael had been friends with the two for quite some time, and it surprised Liz even more that she had never seen them.

“Oh, ok. Well, I promised Heather that we’d have some girl time, so I’ll see you guys later,” Liz said, picking up Heather and her bag and kissing Maria on the cheek as they always did, “bye Michael!”

When they returned to their apartment Liz found a note on the front door. She took it off and let Heather in.

“Sweetie, go pick out a movie and put your stuff away,” Liz said, walking over to the kitchen and sitting down to read the letter.

Dear Liz,

Well, I guess you aren’t here. It’s um….8:00 a.m. and I was wondering if maybe you’d like to meet me at Red Lobster tonight…my sister wants to meet you, along with my parents…if you don’t want to, it’s perfectly fine with me…just though maybe…you know, you’d like to meet them because they want to meet you…

Call me,

Max

Liz carefully folded up the letter and sat looking at it for a moment. Meeting his parents…and seeing Isabel again…if that’s what she had to do to take it a step further with Max…she’d do it.

“Honey, mommy’s gonna make a phone call, so keep it down,” Liz called before dialing Max’s cell phone number.

Ring…

Ring….

Ring….

“Hey this is Max…” his voice began.

“Hey Max this is…” Liz started to say, but then it continued.

“…I’m not available at the moment but it if you’d like to, leave your name, and number at the beep and I’ll get right back with ya, adios!” his ANSWERING MACHINE said.

“Um…ya, this is Liz, I just wanted to say that I’ll come tonight…pick me up at 6? Bye!” she quickly hung up. He must be at that school meeting.

“Mommy! I want to watch Barbie as Rap-oon-zel,” Heather said, holding up the Barbie movie to her mommy. At least it wasn’t’ Barney.

Liz popped the movie in and sat down next to Heather, Heather responding by immediately curling up into a ball on her lap.

As scenes of Barbie in a forest passed through her head; Liz’s eyelids slowly started to droop.

“Mooooooooooomm-eeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!” Heather whined, poking Liz’s cheek. Liz’s eyes snapped open and she looked at Heather, “Mommy, you falled asleep…and someone’s knocking at the door, I told them that you were a sleeping…the person is in the kitchen.”

“Oh no! You let them in!! It could be a bad person Heather, next time wake mommy up!” Liz exclaimed, putting Heather next to her and rushing out to the kitchen to find Max sitting at the kitchen table.

“I guess I’m the bad person?” Max asked, his face lighting up with humor. Liz placed her hands on her hips and rolled her eyes.

“You could have waked me up instead of having Heather scare me half to death,” Liz said seriously, but a grin forming on her face.

“Forgive me your majesty,” Max said, bowing his head, then looking up at her amused face and smiling, “I came by to make sure about later…I just heard that you met Isabel.”

“Yes actually, quite nice she is!” Liz said, forcing a smile.

“Don’t lie, she gave you the whole ice queen you are dirt thing didn’t she?” Max said, standing up and facing her with one hand on each shoulder.

“Well…yeah. I tried to get along with her Max…I truly did…” Liz implored, gazing deeply into his eyes.

“I know…Isabel rarely lets anyone in. We were adopted if you didn’t already know…and Isabel I guess has never let anyone in because of it. Me, Michael, Kyle, we’re basically it, with the exceptions of a few friends at her college, her and Maria never really clicked though, that’s why you never saw us much, we hung at my house, or Izzy’s,” Max said, taking his hands off her shoulders, but leaning in and gently kissing her forehead, “I promise…you’ll click with mom and dad immediately, they will adore you, just as I do.”

Liz smiled and leaned in to give Max a hug.

“What should I wear?” Liz asked, still in the embrace.

“Lizzie dear, you could wear a trash bag and still be gorgeous…but I guess I would suggest a nice blouse and a skirt,” Max said, pulling back smiling down at her.

“Ok, well, I’d ask you to stay, but it might be boring, Heather’s gonna ask to watch either Barney or Spongebob next,” Liz said.

“I don’t mind, unless of course, you don’t want me to stay…” Max started.

“Of course I do, I just don’t want to bore you to death before dinner, what kind of impression would that make?” Liz said, giving him a quick peck on the lips before leading him out to the living room where Heather had popped in Shrek 2, surprisingly.

Max sat down and was about to pull Liz down on his lap, but Liz gave him a look and nodded to Heather, who was looking at them curiously.

“Mr. Evans…I have some questions. I’m going to say them just as Auntie Maria told me to say them. What are your intentions with my mommy?” Heather asked, scooting so that she was in-between the two. Max glanced with an amused expression on his face at Liz, who looked shocked.

“Well…it depends. I wish to date her…possibly more…” Max said, gazing at Liz, who raised her eyebrows.

“Very good, I’ll have to tell her immmmediately!” Heather said, “After Shrek.” Liz laughed a bit then moved Heather so that Liz could cuddle up next to Max and Heather could do the same next to her mommy.
