Forward:

Max: You were right, about Alex. He was killed by an alien. I prayed that that wasn't the case but it was. We're responsible.

Liz: I never blamed you, Max. I never blamed any of you.

Max: I know. I know you didn't.

Liz: I never wanted to lose you.

Max: Me either. Liz there's something I need to tell you. It's about Tess and me...

Liz: You're together now, I know.

Max: It more than that. Our relationship is... uh, we spent the night together.

Liz: Oh...

Max: Liz... Tess is pregnant.

Liz: (mouth agape, pain and betrayal evident in her eyes) She's...

Max: I know you're upset.

A few moments, of which seem almost like an eternity, goes by as Liz blankly stares into Max's eyes. As tears suddenly fall, she lets out a short bitter laugh, of which never reaches her eyes. Anger suddenly explodes within as it finally dawns on her of what Max just said.

Liz: (whispers calmly) Upset? Upset? (her voice raising as her calm explodes) God I-I trusted you, I gave you everything. I jumped off bridges for you..., I broke laws for you. I risked getting shot for you. I trusted you! And you go off-god, with Tess- God I saved myself for you!

Max: Saved your self? You slept with Kyle!

Liz: (deflated) Get out (turning away from him)

A few moments go by in silence as Max takes everything in.

Max: Liz, you never slept with Kyle, did you?

Liz: (turning to face him, her eyes fill with tears once again) No

Max: Liz...

Liz: Leave Max... This is it. It's been over for a while now. Me denying having slept with Kyle isn't going to change that.

Max: No (breaking down) Liz, I can't

Liz: Yes you can. (sobbed) Let... me...go

Max: I can't...

Max slowly, determined not to lose her, walks over to Liz. Cupping her face gently, his lips slowly descend upon hers. They spend long moments giving each other open mouth kisses. Slowly descending upon the bed, Max and Liz's kisses grew longer and heated. "We can't do this Max..." Liz gasped between kisses. Liz didn't know whether to go with her mind, which was telling her to push him, or go with her heart, which was telling her to move forward with being with the man she loved because this would be the last time.

She went with her heart. Max was Tess's forever but this was the one moment in time where Max belonged to her. "Liz... I can't let go..." Max whispered in anguish as he looked into her somber brown eyes. "But... if you want me to..." Max stated slowly, hoping that she wouldn't tell him yes to stop, took her mouth again. "No don't go...just- just for tonight..."Liz breathed. Receiving flashes of their past, Max and Liz slowly strip away each other's clothes. Max began kissing Liz from head to toe.

They met each other in a fever, flesh upon flesh. They gloried in one another's love, stroking. Max slowly eased into Liz's entrance before coming to her barrier. "Liz... are you sure?" "Yes... now Max now..." He moved then thrusting into her. Max groaned in pleasure as Liz cried out in pain, arching her back, her nails leaving crescents in his broad shoulders. "Don't cry Liz, please" Max whispered, kissing her tears away as they became accustom to one another. Max kissed Liz, then, slowly showing her how much she meant to him. His intoxicating kisses, slowly, put Liz into a fervor for more.

Clinching around his member, Max started to move. Losing control, he thrust in desperation. Liz moaned, panting out Max's name. Their sweat mingled together as the temperature of their mating rose to alarming degrees. Max couldn't get enough of her. Liz, then again met the center of the universe for the second time, as Max moved into her, crying. She lay boneless under Max as he cried out her name, eyes clenched shut. Seconds later, Max fell upon her panting, jolting her back into reality. What had she done?! She had just had sex with the love of her life, who not days ago made love to someone else.

"Oh god..." she gasped in pain and horror.” Liz..." Max asked, lifting his head to have found her gone pale, tears springing from her dark brown eyes. "Liz..." "Get up, get up, Max." Liz cried urgently pushing at his shoulders, feeling the bile and nausea rise within her. "Liz..." "Not now, Max" Liz shouted as she ran into the adjoining bathroom, slamming the door. Max sat there in shock. Standing up, he heard Liz vomiting. He knocked on the door. "Go away, Max" Liz sobbed as she leaned over the toilet. Max slowly backed away from the door. 'What had he done?'

Lying naked on the cold bathroom tile, Liz had a new out look on how screwed up her life really was. She hadn't actually realized it until the exact moment when she lay spent under Max's body. Stiff and sore, Liz groaned as she stood in front of her bathroom mirror. Looking into the mirror, she inwardly groaned some more. Her appearance would scare the small town of Roswell, if they could catch a glimpse of her now. Hair in limp tangles, puffy bloodshot eyes, a swollen mouth and a body that ached from lost innocence, she looked and felt like she was just dragged out of the gutter.

Slowly donning her silk robe, Liz cautiously opened the door to see that Max had indeed left. She gave a sigh of relief as she made her way to the bed only to clench her eyes shut at the bloodstains upon her sheets. Hoping against hope that they would disappear and this would be just a very bad dream. She looked away in shame. Liz didn't know whether to laugh or cry at her antics. She was indeed going insane. Liz quickly removed the sheets, replacing them with clean ones, keeping her eyes away from the evidence of her lost innocence.

What had she become? She was supposed to be the perfect Liz Parker. But when had she ever been perfect. She like everyone else had always put the label upon herself as being perfect, of being the one who thought rationally through a moment of crisis. Until this very last moment when she had found out that the love of her life had just carelessly given his virginity away to another. And then she had foolishly given her virginity to him, not a week later.

Crawling into bed, Liz burrowed herself under the covers not caring the least that it was still daylight outside. She was never coming out again. "Chica, you ready to shop till we drop? Oh… how did it go with Don Juan?" Liz sighed as Maria burst into the room in her usual Maria 'Hurricane' Deluca way. 'God, what have I done to deserve this?' Liz thought as she burrowed further under the covers. "Lizzie...?" "What?" Liz muffled under the covers, trying not to cry at her stupidity. "Liz...?" Maria asked again this time in concern before pulling back the covers.

Maria gasped as she saw the defeated look in Liz's swollen eyes. Maria looked her friend over in her disheveled state and almost cried out the pain that was evident. "Liz, what happened?" I don't want to talk about it Maria." Before pulling the cover back over her head. "Tough sh--t, talk Chica" Maria demanded firmly pulling the covers back. Liz looked her friend in the eye and knew Maria wouldn't judge her. Because she really didn't need that right now. "I slept with Max" Liz whispered, ashamed.

"As in snoring sleeping" Maria asked dreading the answer. "No Maria, as in sex!" "Liz, come on stop you were only gone..." "Yes Maria" Liz sighed, tears rolling down her cheeks, as she clenched her sheet. "Oh…" Maria stated suddenly deflated before hopping off of the bed. "Ohmigod, Liz" Maria screeched rubbing her hands roughly down her behind. "Ewww, sorry Chica wouldn't want to get Don Juan's little green alien men on my jeans. What? They’re new." Maria replied sheepishly before crouching down in front of Liz's bed.

"That's not all..." Liz's face went blank of emotions. "Well, what else could there be?" Maria grimaced dreading what was coming up next. "He had sex with Tess and she's pregnant." "What?" Maria screeched, standing abruptly in shock. "What did you just say?" "He had sex with Tess..." Maria starts pacing at this, hands waving. "I heard you. I heard you, Liz. Let me get this straight, you had sex with him..." "Not so loud, Maria." Liz hissed sitting up in bed watching Maria rant and rave.

"Not so loud? Liz have you lost it? Max has sex with Tess and gets her pregnant and you have sex with him?" "I know. I know..." "You know, you know. I don't think you do know Liz. Did you guys like use protection?" Maria asked standing rigidly in front of the bed, her fists balled. Liz went white with shame, embarrassment, and fear answering Maria's question in the process. "Oh my god, I guess that's a no. So tell me Liz what do you think about the possibility of alien herpes, alien Aids, oh yeah let's not forget alien pregnancies?" Maria asked sarcastically, so mad she could spit.

Liz breaks down in tears then covering her face with her hands, hating Maria for what she was saying but knowing full well she was right. She hadn't even thought of the possibility of getting pregnant or of contracting some alien STD. The only thought that ran through her mind from the time she lay in bed with Max to this very moment was the fact of how stupid she was to sleep with Max in the first place, and after he had already moved on and slept with Tess. The thought hadn't even crossed her mind of the consequences of having slept with him.

'What was she going to do if she was pregnant? What would happen if she became sick and never survived past next week? How would that affect her parents? How was she going to tell her parents that she was pregnant at the age of seventeen? How could she afford a baby? She wasn't even finished high school yet. Oh god...' "Liz babe, I'm sorry" Maria whispered climbing on the bed beside her friend, hugging as she cried. "I'm sorry...so sorry..."

Sitting up, Liz wiped her tears away with the back of her hand. "What am I going to do, Maria?" Maria sat cross-legged examining her defeated friend and made up her mind. "Get up." "What?" "Get up, your going to go take a shower" Maria demanded pushing Liz off the bed. "We're going out." Maria said while shoving Liz into the bathroom. "But Maria..." "No buts. We're going shopping. The way I see it is we can't think of plans for our problems if the problems haven't even arrived yet. We'll take it one day at a time and for now the best cure for your suicidal state is to go shopping and get some fresh air." Maria ranted before reaching for the door. "Maria?" "Yeah, Chica." Maria stopped expectantly. "I love you" Liz smiled, somberly turning on the shower. "I love you too. Now hop to it, shopping a-waits."

A Few Days Later

"Hey... ummm Max can I talk to you for a second?" Liz asked finding Max, Isabel, Tess seated outside in the squad during lunch. "Yeah sure." Ignoring Isabel and Tess's quizzical looks Max grabbed up his books. Liz couldn't even look at Tess without losing her composure, so she watched Max grab his things before following him towards the bleachers. Liz had a lot to think about these last few days. A possible pregnancy, Max, Tess, parents, school, the whole shebang. And with Maria's help, she came to a conclusion.

Liz felt a lot better than she had a few days a go, the only telling sign saying she was going through something bad was the shadows under her eyes from lack of sleep. Too many things to think about, to worry about. Liz wanted to be free again and the only way to accomplish that feet would be to let Max go. He looked as bad as she felt: five o'clock shadow, bags under his eyes which at the moment were bloodshot red.

"Liz listen I just wanted to apologize for the other day. I took advantage of you and I'm sorry..." Turning to meet his eyes with angry eyes of her own, Liz tried to control her emotions enough not to snap. "That's bull Max. I had just as much a choice in what we did as you did. Do you honestly think I would have let you go that far if I didn't want you? But that's beside the point, isn't it? The point being, I can't have you." Max nodded, his gaze centered toward the field. "It's time to let go, Max. To make a clean break."

"Do you think it'll work...?" "It has to work or else I won't survive. I'm tired, Max. Really tired" Liz sighed rolling her eyes towards the sky before rolling them back to wards him. "So what about the other day, do we just throw that away?" Max whispered turning his gaze toward her. Liz sat there for a couple of moments weighing her words before answering," Yes... we're not meant to be, Max."

Sighing, "We never were. You have your path to follow and I have mine. I need to follow my own path, Max. We're both suffocating, as much as we want to deny it we are. So it's either continue our relationship in the process suffocating the life out of one another or move on." Liz replied swallowing her tears back. "Then I guess... we move on." Max answered his face devoid of expression.

"Ok..., there can be no friendship between us, Max. If you see me... walk the other way or plainly ignore me and vice versa. If you need me in a life or death crisis, I'll always be there. But other than that we have no reason to converse at all." Liz whispered, holding her emotions in check. "What if you need me?" "I won't need you!" "Yes you will" he answered in anger. "Alright then I'll call you...but don't count on it!" Liz replied coldly before calmly standing up and walking away, leaving Max to watch her leave once again.

That Night

Liz lay tangled in her sheets, tossing and turning, as she dreamt of Max and Tess. No... No Liz whispered in her sleep as she witnessed the nuptials. 'Do you Max Evans take Tess Harding to be your lawfully wedded wife....? I do.... Now you may kiss the bride.' Max kisses Tess tenderly' Then people applauded happily as Max and Tess walked down the isle. Another scene came up in which an older Liz is seen running down a dark street near the Crash Down after a black van screaming Alex's name at the top of her lungs.

Liz woke up in a cold sweat, breathing hard. Fear clouding her mind. 'Oh god what was that?' Liz breathed as her heart slowed its pace. She, shivering, couldn't help but feel that something wasn't right. She had the exact same feeling after Alex's death. Something just wasn't right.

Two Weeks Later:

It was fifth period and Liz was starving for food. Rushing across the squad to a quiet area, she ignored the suspicious looks from Max, Isabel, Michael, and Tess. She was hungry. Just this morning her breakfast had consisted of a leftover ice cream Sundae loaded down with chocolate syrup and tons of Tabasco sauce. If Liz didn't know this morning then she knew now that she was indeed pregnant. No pregnancy tests, no morning sickness just a really big urge for that ice cream Sundae, from the night before, and Tabasco sauce. Luckily, her parents had driven out early this morning to a restaurant convention in Albuquerque or she would've had some serious questions to answer. Mainly from her mother. Nancy Parker was a suspicious mother by nature and seeing her only daughter greedily gobble down a large ice cream Sundae would've looked very suspicious.

Pulling out and opening her neatly wrapped tuna sandwich, Liz didn't notice Maria coming up behind her as she neatly mixed yogurt with Tabasco sauce into the sandwich. Taking a huge bite, Liz moaned in delight. "Liz... Chica what the hell is that?" Maria asked fearfully, eyes bulging, mouth agape. Liz looked up startled in the process of taking another bite when she heard Maria. Looking as guilty as a sin, Liz slowly put down the sandwich. 'Damn these cravings' Liz thought.

"Hey, Maria" Liz greeted nervously wiping the corners of her mouth before meeting Maria's eyes. "Lizzie answer my question." "What question?" Liz asked innocently knowing full well what Maria just asked. "You know what question. What are you eating?" "Oh just a sandwich." Maria not believing that for a second snatches up the sandwich with Liz grabbing for it, desperately, in the process. Maria sniffs at it examining its contents. "Is this yogurt and tuna fish...with Tabasco sauce?"

Snatching it back, Liz frowned indignantly at Maria before answering her. "Yes it is if you don't mind?" Taking another bite Liz moaned, not embarrassed in the least, as Maria shuddered. "I'm telling Max." Maria started. Liz's head snapped up, eyes deadly intent blazing with fire, meeting Maria's gaze head on. Maria took a step back. "No-o, you... will not tell Max a thing!" Liz grounded out angrily, just as puzzled as Maria at her response.

For the past two weeks, she had been feeling these uncontrollable emotions run through her in a whirlwind. As if one thing went wrong she would just snap into a rage. Controlling her feelings and thoughts had been work but she had survived through it until now when Maria mentioned Max, as if some instinct was telling her to protect as well as do harm if threatened, she had indeed snapped. Liz felt so confused.

"I'm sorry for snapping, Maria. Please don't tell Max!" She sighed pleadingly to her friend. "He needs to know, Liz.” "I know and I'm going to tell him. I just need the time to adjust first to becoming a mom. I'll tell him...just not right now." Liz breathed combing her hands through her hair in a sigh of stress. Understanding, Maria nodded. "Ok but promise me you'll tell him soon." "I promise..." Liz smiled.

"Now can I eat my sandwich... in peace?" "Sure, go right ahead." Maria replied, watching Liz in horror as she took another bite of her sandwich, while trying not to gag. After lunch, Liz and Maria went there separate ways. Maria to English Literature and Liz to Calculus. Walking down the crowded hall, Liz came upon Max and Tess holding hands just before he kissed her fore head.

Liz tried not to look, pushing her hair nervously behind her ear, as she past them walking the opposite way. Max didn't give away anything in his expression that he saw her but kept on walking. Liz didn't know why it hurt seeing him with Tess being as though she came up with the whole idea of moving on from the beginning. Liz tried throughout the day to shake off her depression but it wouldn't leave.

Later that night as Liz tossed and turned in her bed, she dreamt again for the third time this week of Max and Tess getting married. But that wasn't the worst of what she dreamt about. Liz dreamt again of running down the street after a dark van wailing Alex's name. In the end she always woke up in a cold sweat. Alex was dead she thought as a cold chill of fear ran done her spine. She really needed someone to hold her.

Early On that Night:

"Max, where are we going?" Tess asked excitedly, as they drove through the open desert. "Someplace special." Max smiled, squeezing her hand gently as he drove out into the night. He couldn't help but think he was making another huge mistake. That once he said what he had to say there would be no turning back. Max had a tremendous urge to turn the jeep around and say never mind but he owed this to Tess and the baby to be a man and step up to his responsibilities.

Driving up to the rock formation where the pods lay, Max parked. This is where he had first met her, where he had first laid eyes on her, so this was just as good as any other place to seal his fate. "Max...?" Tess asked her voice filled with concern as she realized where they were. Hopping out of the jeep, Max helped Tess out before leading her up the rocky path. Laying his palm upon the cold, rocky surface of the wall leading to the pod chamber, Max met Tess's gaze. Shaking inside with dread and nervousness, Max pulled Tess through the opening. This was supposed to be Liz. Their fate was supposed to be together. So then why was he proposing to Tess? 'Because she's having your baby and you owe it to her to make sure she's happy and well taken care of. Seeing as though this was your fault in the first place. That's why. Oh yeah and one more reason, Liz doesn't want you anymore.' He thought as he glanced at the pods before turning towards Tess.

Taking both of her hands into his, "Tess, do you remember when I said I was ready to wake up?" Tess looked up at Max confused before answering, "Yeah..." "And do you remember telling me that you would be here for 'eternity'? Nodding, her curls shook as she stared up into his eyes. "Did you mean it when you said that?" "Of course, Max. What is all this about?" Tess asked nervously. "Well first, I want to apologize for taking advantage of you. You've always been there for me and I guess I've expected that. I just never thought of the fact that one day you might get tired of waiting and leave." "Max...?" "I don't want you to leave, Tess. In fact, I would really need for you to stay and become my wife..." Surprised would be an understatement to what Tess was feeling right now, she couldn't move. Grinning, Max kneeled down, taking out an engagement ring with an alien symbol embedded into it out of his pocket. Max took a deep breath, "Tess will you marry me?"

A few Days later

Max knocked on Sheriff Valenti's door Saturday morning with a bouquet of daisies, Tess's favorite, a stuffed spaceship, for the baby, and a newspaper. He had a lot to think about these last few days after proposing to Tess. And Max again came to the same conclusion, he had made his bed and now he was prepared to sleep in it but... he couldn't do this if he was still living under his parents' roof. "Max? What can I do for ya?" Jim Valenti greeted upon answering the door. "Uh... hey I'm here to see Tess." Max greeted in discomfort knowing full well Valenti knew what happened three weeks ago. "Come on in. She's in her room." Valenti replied, stepping back as Max entered.

"So Max... I'm just going to get to the point. I'm not going to pretend to be your parent and tell you what's right from wrong. I just want to let you know that I'm here if you need to talk or anything." Valenti finished in concern, uncomfortable at the situation all together but also realizing he couldn't do a damn thing about. All Jim could do was step in when needed. Max nodded his head in understanding, "Thanks Sheriff". "No problem. So, I'm just gonna take a walk." Max nodded once again as he watched the Sheriff leave, before walking into Tess’s room. Tess looked up from painting her toe nails as Max entered. Startled, she uttered a curse as she spilled the red fingernail polish on her bed.

Waving her hand over the mess, she smiled. "Max..." Tess greeted hopping off the bed. "Hey... I don't think I've ever heard you speak such language before." Max greeted before meeting her lips for a brief kiss. "Well, it's a lot of things you don't know about me, Max." Tess teased. Smiling, not really getting the indication of that statement, Max shook his head before saying, "These are for you and this is for the baby." Holding out the daisies and stuffed toy. "So how are you feeling?" Max asked staring at her belly in concern. "As good as can be expected considering the morning sickness and dizziness. Thanks Max, this is so sweet." Tess beamed, taking the gifts before giving him another kiss, this time showing him her appreciation. Pulling back, Max smiled. "No alien side effects." "No I'm fine, Max. I read up on morning sickness. I've got it just about covered." Tess smiled over Max's concern while pointing to a box of saltine crackers, a jar of peanut butter, Tabasco sauce, and a bottle of ginger ale on her nightstand.

"So Max, what are you doing here?" "I just wanted to see you. And I thought we could try looking for an apartment." Max answered, indicating the newspaper in his hand. "Are you sure, Max?" Tess asked, uneasily trying not to get her hopes up to high to crash and burn. "Yeah. Why not? We're going to be a family right? We can't live my parents forever." "I know that, Max. Speaking of your parents… When and what are you planning on telling them?" Tess asked, sitting upon her bed Indian style. "Tonight... and the truth." He shrugged, not wanting to give a thought as to how his parents would react to becoming grandparents. "The truth being..." Tess prodded. "That I was irresponsible and… I love you and wanna make things right." Appeased, Tess grinned. "Ok... let's look at those apartments, then." Tess replied pulling Max down beside her.

An hour earlier:

"One hundred, twenty-three pounds." Liz uttered, stepping off her scale. She had read this was going to happen. But not so soon, she was only almost three weeks and already she was gaining weight. 'Vain' she thought. 'I am not vain.' she muttered to herself quietly. Wiping the steam off the mirror with her towel, Liz looked at her reflection. Who was she? She wasn't Liz Parker. Liz Parker didn't get knocked up. So, who was she, then? Sighing, she brushed her teeth, wiping her mouth with the towel, after toward. Liz stood up meeting her reflection again in the mirror, only this time to find her reflection no longer had eyes, a nose, or lips.

Gasping in disbelief, she stumbled back before moving forward again to examine her missing features in the mirror. Liz tried to stay calm, then, but to her horror it wasn't working. Waving her hand in front of the mirror, Liz's features once again resurfaced to a terrified expression. The scientist in her wanted to know what exactly was going with her body but the human inside was too afraid to find out. Then the memory resurfaced in her mind of Max healing her and bringing her back to life. So, she was indeed changing now but... this could also be the cause of being pregnant by an alien. Looking at herself once again, Liz chalked it up to just losing it. She was bound to be a certifiable nutcase anyway. So why shouldn't it be happening now... in the mist of her pregnancy.

Getting dressed in jeans and a short sleeved t-shirt, Liz planned on going to the park to get some much needed air, reading about 'Pregnancy' in the process, before heading over to Maria's. She had a whole stack load of information on being pregnant, hidden of course, from giant textbooks to articles off the Internet. Liz wanted as much information on having a baby as humanly possible before going into labor. Because there was no way she could go to an obstetrician and still believe she'd last a week before ending up in the FBI'S claws. So she had only herself to rely upon now. The way Liz saw it, she had until the end of February, next year, to go into labor that is if things went normal and there weren't any alien side effects. Liz had to face the fact that she was in deed alone and couldn't count on Maria, Max, or her parents to keep her and her child alive. She had to do that herself.

Liz still had yet to tell Max or her parents that she was pregnant. She didn't know how she felt about it besides the overwhelming fear that something bad was going to happen. How was she going to tell Max? How was she going to tell her mom and dad? How would they react? Liz was almost too terrified to find out. Dressed, Liz grabbed her book, 'The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy by Vicki Jovine that Maria had bought her, and left by closing her bedroom door behind her. Downstairs, she grabbed an orange, banana, Tabasco sauce, and orange juice before stuffing the items into her tote bag, heading out into the diner.

Waving to her dad at the grill, Liz walked the three blocks to the public playground. She couldn't resist but go in. She was drawn instantly to the squeals of laughter. Sitting on a bench, Liz watched as toddlers and children of all ages ran around the jungle gym. There were mothers and fathers pushing their young ones in swings. There sitting on the benches were young parents feeding and playing with their babies. This made Liz smile a real smile of wonder, knowing that one day she would be experiencing that exact same joy. This was the first time in weeks that she actually felt optimistic about being pregnant. She was still terrified, though, of what was to come but the excitement and relief, Liz felt, was quickly replacing the fear and apprehension of having a child. She knew then... that everything would be all right.

That Evening after Dinner

"Max... honey is everything ok?" Diane Evans asked sitting across from her son in the living room. "Yeah son, what is it that you needed to speak to us about?" Phillip Evans asked, sitting beside his wife as they both gazed at Max with worried expressions. Sighing, Max glanced at his parents and sister with a mixture of both shame and fear before speaking, "I don't know how to say this but to just say it..." "Oh Max, get on with it. My date will arrive in any minute." Isabel breathed impatiently not the least bit ashamed to let her agitation show. Ignoring Isabel, Max went on. "I just want to let you know that I never meant to cause you any of this pain and disappointment. I simply wasn't thinking..." "Max..." Diane interrupted. "Let me just finish mom..." Sucking in a deep breath, Max blurted out his unorganized thoughts," I'm getting married."

Silence met with silence as the sound of the grandfather clock ticked away in the background. Phillip Evans started howling then in laughter as Diane looked to her husband with a disapproving frown before looking to Max to explain. Isabel was too dazed and confused to say anything. "Max, don't you think you're a little too young to be getting married?" Phillip asked, extremely amused after having calm down. "I mean you've only just turn eighteen and your still in high school." Phillip Evans stated, uneasily at Max's expression of guilt. "That isn't all..." "Then... what is it, Max?" Diane breathed sharply, dreading the news. "You’re going to be grandparents."

Silence yet again filled the neatly furnished room, only this time Phillip Evans didn't laugh but bellowed in rage. "What?" Shock, anger, and disappointment filled out Diane Evans features. "Please Phillip... How could you do this, Max? Who... who is she?" "Her name's Tess Harding…"Max stated, his face yet again devoid of emotion.”You mean that nice girl Isabel hangs out with? That Tess? What happened to Liz Parker?" "Yes... and it didn't work out." Max answered clenching his jaw.
"It doesn't really matter who she is. The problem can be rectified by tomorrow afternoon... with an abortion!" Phillip Evans stated bluntly, deadly calm as he met the gaze of his only son.

"Phillip..." Diane gasped, turning toward her husband. "Sorry dad, the decision has already been made. We're having the baby." Max replied enraged. His usual calm hazel-brown eyes were turbulent with rage at his father's coldness. "Not under my roof your not. You can either terminate it or move out. Your choice, Max?" Phillip stated calmly, moving to leave the room. "Then..., I'll just have to move out then." Max whispered quietly, tears clouding his eyes, stopping Phillip cold. Both Isabel and Diane silently looked on crying as they took in the two most important men in their lives. One standing in the doorway to the kitchen… the other exiting the premises.

Rewinding... to that morning:

After having walked the six blocks to Maria's house, Liz knocked on the door. She waited two more minutes before knocking again. Glaring at the door a few minutes later, Liz felt her agitation rise to worry. Banging on the door, she finally heard muffled noises before hearing Maria scream, "I'm coming. Can't a girl make...Liz?" Maria greeted, flushing in embarrassment. Liz was immediately suspicious. "Was I interrupting...something?" Liz asked while trying to see into the kitchen over Maria's head before taking in Maria's state of dress. "Oh no...not at all." "Ok...so why don't you invite me in Maria?" Liz asked, not the least bit phased by Maria's 'innocence'. A few seconds pass, as Maria adjusted her thoughts under Liz's scrutiny.

Sighing dejectedly, Maria admitted a bit annoyed, “Because, Michael isn't...dressed." Liz pointed to Maria's jeans unzipped for the world to see. Horridly zipping her jeans, Maria flushed once more in embarrassment. At that moment, Michael chose to step into the kitchen. And he was just as disheveled as Maria, maybe more so. Liz tried to keep from smiling as she noticed Michael's shirt was on backwards, showing the tag. "Hey." Michael grunted, opening the refrigerator. Liz rolled her eyes towards the sky before meeting Maria's gaze. "I guess this isn't a good time after all...seeing as though I'm still outside. I'll call you later." Liz sighed, mood swings kicking in, before turning to leave.

"Liz...wait. Michael was just leaving." Maria called out abruptly at her friend's departure. Liz turned, frowning. She should of known her good mood wasn't going to last. "What?" Michael asked sharply with annoyance before grabbing a chocolate chip cookie and the milk. "Michael, right?" Michael then looked between Maria and Liz, carton midway to his mouth, before putting the carton of milk back, disappointment. "Yeah, right." Michael mumbled, moving to leave before Maria grabbed him for a kiss. Liz once again rolled her eyes toward the bright blue sky, happy that at least one of her friends was happy. Leaving, Michael passed Liz without so much as word of goodbye.

The usual Michael 'I'm a brick wall's motto’, which she had learned early on to have patience with, had now escaped her grasp. Liz seriously desired to go after him and smack him one. Looking to Maria, Liz followed her inside, closing the door behind her. In Maria's room, they sat in an awkward silence which Liz couldn't resist breaking. "So... I would've thought you had learned from my mistakes by now. I guess not." Liz stated, teasing ling baiting Maria. "I did. I didn't lose my virginity. If I had though, you could bet you a-- that Michael would've been wearing a condom and I'd still be on my big batch of birth control pills. Unlike you and Max." Maria replied in defense. "Well then I guess that's why you’re still a virgin. I wouldn't have taken you for hypocrite, Maria. Don't judge me, one minute and then five minutes later, do the exact same thing." Liz retorted, eyes blazing.

Blowing out a breath, Maria really looked at Liz and realized the girl was finally shedding her claws. Don't get Maria wrong, Liz did have claws but she never used them. Maria couldn't help but grin, which took Liz back even more. "Listen, Liz. Michael knows that this chic isn't going any further than kissing, ok and maybe a little bit of foreplay, without a ring on her finger. I just…I never meant to judge you, Lizzie. You're my best friend and... I trust that if I needed a reality check you wouldn't hesitate in dishing it out to me. I'm the same way. I don't want to cause you anymore pain then you have to deal with but neither am I going to sugar coat the truth either." Maria stated, walking over to her closet. Liz sat there puzzled at her outburst while nodding somberly in agreement to Maria's statement. Finally finding the gift bag, Maria smiled. 'This might cheer her up', Maria thought.

Sighing in exhaustion, Liz finally glanced up to find Maria standing stock still with her hands behind her back, trying not to smile. "Don't cry, Liz. Because then, I'll start crying and you know how that goes." Liz certainly knew how it went. If Maria started crying she would never stop and then it would be a bawl fiesta between the both of them crying. Maria, then, pulled out a gift bag from behind her back. "Ok? What's in the bag?" Liz asked beyond curious as to what it was. "Nothing really, just this and that." Maria replied nonchalantly, all but bursting inside. "For me? Can I see?" Liz grinned. Handing over the gift bag, Maria plopped down next to her on the bed, anxiously. Liz gasped in surprise as she looked into the bag, "Oh my gosh, Maria?" Liz exclaimed, trying to hold in her tears.

She examined the contents meticulously, each one bringing tears to her eyes. Baby clothes. They were so tiny. There were two infant bodysuits: One white and one red with spaceships printed in the center, a pack of coveralls in: yellow, green, and blue, a white and yellow knit blanket, a washcloth set, another pack of striped caps matching the coveralls. And last but not least was a rectangular blue gift box tied in a blue ribbon. Finally, Liz glanced upon from examining the clothes to see Maria hovering over shoulder, expectantly.

"It finally hit home, Maria. I mean it really hit home. Before I was just basically going through the motions. Yes, I knew I was going to have a baby in my mind and I was prepared... But it never truly hit home in my heart. You know... not until now... that I'm going to be a mother. That, this beautiful... human being will belong to me. Will look up to me for protection. Will love and depend on me. And all long I was thinking about myself, about how Max hurt me..." Liz whispered, tears leaking down her face, as she picked up each piece of clothing once again. Wiping her tears away, Maria waited. "About how this was affecting me... about how this would ruin my life... about how everyone was going to react to me being pregnant. But... I never really looked at the big picture, Maria. It isn't about me anymore." Picking up the box, Liz slid the bow free before opening the box to see a green rattle. Picking it up, she rattled it smiling. Placing the rattle on the bed, Liz, then started going through the box, again quiet. There was another Bib, another bodysuit without sleeves, soft cargo pants, a reversible cardigan, and another soft knit blanket, this time green.

Glancing up, Liz met Maria’s eyes. "Thanks Maria... for being my friend." "Oh, you’re welcome Chica. You better get use to it though." "What?" "Me spoiling my niece or nephew rotten, of course." Maria teased, trying to lighten the mood and succeeding. Liz laughed her first real laugh in months. Maria grinned before going stern, "Now go wash your face and get yourself together." "Why?" Liz asked curiously, in the doorway. "Why? Because... we have hot dates with our favorite men tonight... Ben & Jerry." Maria replied indignantly before grinning. Liz laughed, helplessly, before leaving toward the bathroom. Closing the door behind her, Liz went to wet the washcloth, she had found in the hallway closet, but immediately gripped the sink as dizziness struck her blind. The last thing Liz remembered, before fainting away, was hitting the floor.

Walking outside of the bathroom door, Maria heard a thump. Calling out Liz's name, Maria became instantly worried when she knocked once again but no answer came. "Lizzie...Liz?" Maria called out; pushing the door open to find Liz sprawled out unconscious on the bathroom floor as the water ran. "Oh god..." She cried out, panicking. Running into her room, Maria found a vile of Cyprus oil that could wake the dead. Crouching over Liz in the bathroom, Maria waves the odor under Liz's nose, desperately. She did this for a few moments with success. Liz moaned grimacing in pain, as she tried to touch the back of her head. Opening her eyes a few times, Liz's eyes focused Maria's whose eyes were filled with concern.

"Liz...chica, are you ok? I heard this loud thump. Did you hurt anything?" Maria asked holding out a hand. "I don't know...not really." Liz replied, drawing in a deep breath, before standing up. "God, Liz don't ever scare me like that again." Maria's voice trembled at the thought of losing her best friend. Liz smiled, "I'll try not to... Maria I need to sit down." Liz stated, urgently, feeling the dizziness coming on again. "Oh no you don't. C'mon, I'll help you." Maria grabbed Liz by the arm, before slowly pulling her into her room before sitting her down on the side of the bed. "Liz, when are you going to tell Max?" "I don't know..." "You don't know?" "Monday, Maria." Liz interrupted, exhausted, lying back on the bed. "I'm just so tired." Liz yawned. "No Liz, you could a have a concussion." Maria warned, grabbing the cartons of ice cream off her dresser. "Yes, mother" Liz teased, grabbing the carton of Vanilla with Caramel swirl. The one thing she couldn't resist, even if it was a matter of life and death, during her pregnancy was ice cream, with extra sugar and Tabasco sauce. Looking into the container, "Maria, you have any Tabasco sauce?" Maria, in answer to that rolled her eyes toward the ceiling. "Yeah, sit here. I'll get it." "Oh yeah and Maria 'sugar'" Liz called out of the room. Maria wanted to vomit.

Monday:

"Moon doggie is staring at you again. And very closely, I might say." Maria observed. Liz stopped midway, a spoon of applesauce mixed with sugar halfway to her mouth. Glaring at Maria, Liz refused to turn around and see. She had enough problems, as it was, that was not including Max Evans. "I, so, do not need this right now, Maria." "It's time babe, now or never." "Never would be just fine with me." Liz muttered, clearly in a bad mood, not caring in the least how she sounded. She had been through too much on the account of Max Evans and she just wanted to be left alone. But Maria wasn't going for it, "Either you do it or I do it. Either way he will know." "Have a seat Maria. If you weren't my best friend, I would do you some serious harm right now." Liz muttered furious, standing up before giving Maria a dirty look. She strode over toward the aliens' table of choice.

Upon arriving at the table, Max glanced up to find Liz standing before him. She was so incredibly beautiful. Glowing actually but not 'he thought' with happiness. He missed seeing her, talking to her, but most of all he missed her smile. Knowing that he was the one who snatched the way the light in her eyes and the smile that he had come to love, made Max want to throw himself off a cliff, any cliff, just so he couldn't do the one thing that he had always succeeded in doing, hurting Liz. Max missed her. Plain and simple. He hadn't actually realized this until just a few moments ago. When he wasn't thinking about the baby, Tess, or his parents, Max was wondering if she was okay. If his stupidity hadn't actually cause yet another pregnancy.

He wasn't a total idiot; he couldn't just go up to Liz and ask if she was she pregnant with his child. Especially with the way things were between them now. They weren't even on speaking terms. She'd probably kick him in the balls if he so much as breathed in her direction. So, Max had decided to wait for her to come to him if anything was wrong. And here she was, "Max, I need to speak to you for a second in 'private'. Liz stated, while trying to ignore Isabel, Tess, and Michael's intense stares. "Alright..." Max, then, followed Liz across the squad to an empty table. Sitting in silence, Liz glanced at everything but Max before coming to meet his eyes. Max had no such difficulty. Nowadays, he craved for just the sight of her, seeing as though that was the only thing he could have.

It hit him suddenly that this was the time to bring up three weeks ago and the fact that he hadn't used a condom. But he was suddenly interrupted from his thoughts by Liz's voice. "Max..." Liz finished, nervously, unsure of how she was going to tell him, without getting hurt in the process. Suddenly alert to the fear he saw in her eyes, "What is it, Liz? Is something wrong?" He prodded after a few moments of silence. 'Well, obviously', Max thought, 'She wouldn't be speaking to you otherwise, idiot.' "No...Yes..." Right there, Liz was interrupted by the noise of the crowd surrounding Max's table. Leaping up, panicked, Max ran over to the crowd, shoving his way through, his heart lodged in his throat, as he saw Tess sprawled out unconsciously on the ground. Liz was left sitting there, somberly, as she watched Max carry an unconscious Tess to his jeep, Michael and Isabel not far behind, before driving away. Liz sat there, quietly; the pain overwhelming, as she vowed this would be the last time Max Evans ever had the chance of hurting her...again.

That Night:

Liz once again, tossed and turned in her sleep. Her dreams leaving her gasping for air. Dreaming, Liz picked up a small dark-haired little girl, maybe three or four, out of a sandbox. They were both laughing hysterically. The little girl looked as Liz's exact twin at that age. Her dream then went on to... tucking in a dark-haired little boy, also maybe three or four. She kissed him on the forehead as he slept. Liz's dreams went then from a dream to a nightmare in a matter of seconds. An older version of the little boy's face burned its way into her mind, smiling. Suddenly his face disappeared, to an older version of Liz running down a dark familiar street..., in anguish, wailing Alex's name over and over again as the dark van disappeared into the night. Collapsing into the ground, sobbing, Liz repeatedly cried Alex's name, over and over again, as she hugged herself. Sitting up, gasping for air, Liz looked down to her abdomen... before laying both of her palms on it in comfort. She, then, whispered one word that would explain everything. "Twins"

A few Days Later

Liz stood outside of Max's apartment building Wednesday afternoon, tense with anxiety. She really just wanted to go home, finish the leftover carton of ice cream from the night before and climb into bed for some much needed sleep. For the last few nights her dreams had become more disturbing, possibly more sinister than she could ever imagine. Since Monday, Liz had been avoiding Max with success. But now... it was time to tell him. Blowing out a breath, Liz quickly climbed the three staircases to the third floor. To say she was nervous was an understatement, Liz was terrified. Knocking on the door to apartment 305, Liz waited, hoping upon hope that Max answered the door instead of Tess. Evidently, her hopes were in vain because Tess answered the door. "Liz...?" Tess greeted, shocked, evidently not expecting her. "Hello, Tess. Is Max in?" "Uh no, he's at work." "Ok...thanks." Liz replied, ready to walk away, ending this little chat with Tess immediately. "Liz...wait. Why don't you come in. So, we can talk." Tess asked, voice filled with false gaiety that had always grated Liz's nerves. "No thanks, Tess." Liz replied, smiling a smile of which never reached her usually animated brown eyes.

She really, really did not need this extra drama, right now. "Please, it'll only be a second. I just want to talk, clear the air." Tess pleaded, opening the door wider for Liz to step through. Feeling threatened to the fullest but curious as to what Tess had up her sleeve, Liz stepped in, closing the door behind her. Taking in her surroundings, Liz studied the neatly furnished apartment. There was an old navy blue couch, two tables with lamps, a few posters plastered to the wall, two book shelves filled with books, and cream and sky blue curtains that blocked out the sunshine, all in all the living room was very cozy. Liz came to the conclusion quickly that the apartment must of come already furnished upon moving in. Jealous of their apparent happiness, she followed Tess into the kitchen. Liz didn't why she would be jealous. She was happy for them. Liz immediately nixed that thought because it wasn’t true. She hoped they lived miserably… with not a drop of happiness. Liz wanted them to suffer... slowly.

"Do you want something to drink, Liz?" "No, thanks." "Ok Liz... I know this must be difficult for you and all, seeing Max and I together..." "Not at all, I'm fine." Liz stated, unconvincingly, in resentment and anger. Tess smiled, immediately, seeing through her facade. "I know how you feel Liz, considering the fact that Max and I are getting married Friday." Tess taunted, smiling sweetly at Liz's stunned expression. "Married? You and Max are getting married?" Liz choked out stunned, her heart logging in her throat. "Of course, he proposed, not a week ago. And I have to tell you, Liz, it was so romantic." Tess giggled, holding out her left hand's ring finger. "I'm surprised, he didn't tell you. Seeing as though how close you two were at one time." Tess beamed, noticing Liz's eyes tearing up. "Well so am I." Liz responded hoarsley.' Surprise' wouldn't even be the word for it.

Backing up, Liz turned leaving, while trying not to pass out. The pain was too overwhelming, spreading in alarming speed. As she realized yet again that Max Evans still had the power to break her heart. Rage consumed the pain, making it that much easier to hate Max and wish him to the lowest circles of hell. She hated him. She loved him. She hated him. Sighing dramatically at Liz's devastated expression, Tess smiled inside. "You should move on, Liz. This is not healthy, you pining for Max. He's over you. I'm sorry to say. We're having a family. Do you really want to ruin that? In the process making Max hate you." Liz's head snapped up stunned once again. Only this time at Tess's extent of winning Max. Turning, Liz strode to the door only to have Tess block her exit, slapping her hand up against the door. "Tess, move out of the way." Liz warned, turning to face Tess head on. "No Liz, you need to realize that Max doesn't love you anymore. He loves me..."

Snapping, Liz exploded throwing Tess across the room into the book shelves. Hormones raging, Liz's face contorted into rage, her eyes black with fury. Electricity circulated throughout the apartment, as she stormed over to pick Tess up by the neck, repeatedly slamming her into the wall. "I hate you. I hate you…!" Liz screamed in rage. She didn't hear Max’s arrival. "Liz...? No stop!" Max roared, startling Liz into dropping Tess's unconscious body to the floor. Running over to Tess, Max ran a hand over Tess, healing the wounds Liz inflicted, before looking up. Regaining her composure, Liz strode over to the door, as if nothing had happened, before stopping to look back at Max with a serene smile, eyes snapping in rage.

"Congratulations Max. You’ve succeeded in making me hate you!" Slamming the door, Liz cried. Walking down the street, after a good cry, Liz felt invigorated and free. Something, she hadn't felt in over two years. Kicking Tess's a-- felt so good. Liz wondered why she hadn't done it sooner. It had relieved a load of stress that she had been holding onto for the last three months. No not three weeks...two years. It had all been worth it at the time.... because she had Max. But she no longer had Max. So, would it be worth it to go through all this again.... the FBI, Max, Tess, Kivar...everything... if she no longer had him? No, it wouldn't be worth it. Liz wanted out and she guessed the only way to achieve this... would be to leave Roswell.

Liz wasn't a coward and running away wasn't apart of her programming. 'But think about it, Liz, A new life, a new identity, a new setting...freedom. And let's not forget about your children, Liz. They would grow up with childhoods, deprived childhoods... but childhoods just the same. Where they wouldn't have to worry about looking over their shoulders, of saying the wrong thing, or of being hunted. They could be normal. 'But how normal, Liz, could they be? Their father's an alien 'King', not to mention you’re newly found gifts.' Liz thought, thinking back to this morning to the revelation of realizing she had in deed changed. The alarm had gone off, repeatedly, setting off her anger while sleeping. Before Liz knew it, she had become so enraged that she had blown up the alarm clock. Resulting in her falling off the bed, luckily, her parents were downstairs and hadn't heard the explosion. Or she would've had some explaining to do.

All day, she had had to walk around with long sleeves, seeing as though her arms were covered with green electricity. That's when Liz realized, she had to talk to Max, telling him everything. But then Tess opened the door. And it all went down hill from there. Closing her bedroom door, Liz had much to think about. Should she leave Roswell and all the pain, starting out fresh? Or should she stay and risk becoming insane? Walking to her closet, Liz pulled out a shoebox. In the box was everything she owned of her Grandma Claudia's. Pictures, letters, treasures from expeditions, post cards, and her journal. In Grandma Claudia's journal, she had found just what she had been looking for, a copy of Grandma Claudia's Will.

Liz had never had the courage to read it. It had always been too much for her but Liz forced herself to read every word of it. Basically, Claudia Parker had left everything to her only granddaughter, Elizabeth Parker. Her five bedroom home in Nevada, a stylish, well taken care of 98' Ford Taurus, and $50,000 in stock and savings. Liz neatly folded the Will back into the box before sitting down. With her face in her palms, Liz cried like a baby in relief. "Thank you, Grandma." Liz whispered, thinking that this was a sign that she really could leave Roswell. That she could really start over. Liz's eighteenth birthday was at the end of the month of June. With the money she had saved up, Liz could have her bags packed and be on the next bus out of Roswell by tomorrow morning. But she wasn't going to make this decision lightly without thinking it through first.

Thursday Night:

The dreams always started off the same. Max standing beside Tess at the alter, saying their vows, as everyone applauded their union. But like all the others this dream ended all together differently. Liz dreamt she sat in a cozy living room with an older boy, who she recognized as her son, and an older girl, who looked vaguely like Liz's twin as a child. It was almost uncanny their similar characteristics, this was her little girl. They all sat around a coffee table eating pizza and playing games while laughing at each others' jokes. Then, Liz watched flabbergasted as Tess walked into the room, laughing as well, affectionately ruffling the boy's dark hair. Only it wasn't Tess, she realized, but Tess's dupe, Ava. Liz, again, watched as they laughed and watched movies.

Liz felt true happiness watching the scenes roll through her mind. Birthday parties, dinners, movie nights, the twins first steps... everything. Suddenly, within a blink of an eye, the dream became sinisterly dark. This time she didn't watch as an older Liz ran down the street in desperation but something much more heart wrenching and terrifying. It was the boy, her son, being dragged into 'a dark van', wailing desperately while trying unsuccessfully to escape. "Mommy... help me... no let me go!" Someone, then out of the shadows of the van, yank her son in before slamming the door shut, silencing his screams. "Mommy... Mommy... please help me!"

Liz jerked awake in a cold sweat, her heart slamming up against her ribs. These dreams weren't just any dreams but premonitions... warnings. Something bad was going to happen... unless there was something done. 'Motherly' instincts kicking in hard, Liz jumped from the bed, pacing the floor in agitation. Stopping mid-stride, Liz looked back to the clock to see it was a little after 2am. Pacing yet again, she came to the question that had been nagging her since yesterday upon discovering her new found powers. Should she leave Roswell? Lying palms upon her flat stomach. Liz came to an answer, immediately. 'Yes'

Making a list of things to do, Liz read the first line, 'money'. 'How much do you have' she asked herself, sitting down at her desk. Liz pulled out her most recent bank statement before scanning it. Liz's hopes began sinking, then, as she read the statement again. She had exactly $578.35. "Damn you, Maria, and you’re shopping sprees." Liz muttered. It was enough to get her away from Roswell but was it enough for food and a place to stay on the way? Yes, it was enough. Liz would make enough. She had decided she wouldn't be traveling to Grandma Claudia's, convenient as it was, because that would be the next place her parents, mainly her father, would search before dragging her back to Roswell. Liz wanted to cut all ties from Roswell, from Max, from the alien abyss. Not only for her babies safety, Liz thought, but for her own peace of mind.

Liz wanted a fresh start and that was exactly what she planned on achieving. She chose to 'postpone' telling Max about the babies until she knew it was safe. He couldn't help her least of all with another baby on the way and Tess as his wife. Not to mention she got the distinct impression that her son's abduction wasn't just a mere a kidnapping but... alien related. Her instincts, as crazy as they might sound, had never failed her before and they weren't going fail to her now. Liz decided she had to do this on her own. Selfish, she knew. But when it came to her peace of mind and heart, Max Evans' feelings no longer held any weight in her decisions. Liz loved Max, warts and all, and that would never change. But her babies' safety and happiness came first, then Liz, Max last, and that would never change either. It was time to let go of the fairytales. Max had his life and she had her own.

Packing, Liz glanced at the clock, again. It was 3:36 am. The bus to Nevada left in an hour. Liz wasn't actually going to Nevada but if anyone ever decided to investigate her whereabouts. It would lead them to a dead end. If she were to ever get discovered, it would be on her terms, no one else’s. She had no destination in mind except to get as far away from Roswell as she possibly could, fast. Finally packed, Liz placed two small luggage bags and her book bag near the door before moving toward the desk. Sitting down, she tore tow pieces of paper from her journal before writing:

'Dear. Mom and Dad,

Pain would be an understatement to what I've caused you for the last two years, to what I'm causing you now. You’re probably wondering what has happened to me, your daughter, to cause her to leave her home so abruptly. I wish I could give you an answer to that, to all the questions that are left unanswered. But I can't. All that I can say is that I'm alive and well. I love you both very much; that at this moment I'm missing you already and I haven't even left yet. I'm so sorry to leave without at least one more moment with the people I love most in this world. Again, I'm safe and one day, maybe in the near by future, you'll find me, once again, in your arms. In the meantime, I'll promise to get in touch with you whenever possible.

With love and regret, your daughter,

Liz Parker

P.S: Your car is parked in the bus depot. The keys are under the mat.

'Dear. Maria,

Don't panic. I'm fine. For the past twelve thirteen year you've been my best friend. I can't love you enough for you being you, Maria. For your tough love and your uncanny ability to be there whenever I needed you, and most of all for your wackiness and loyalty. You are my best friend and I'm sorry, more than you'll ever know, for not being there for you as you've been for me. I know I have a lot of nerve asking you for anything. But could you do a few things for me, Maria, please. The first being: be happy no matter what. Go after your dreams and don't make the same mistakes I have. Don't settle for anything less than what you deserve. The second being: there are a lot of reasons why I left Roswell but Max isn't one of them. Please don't blame him for any of my decisions. He doesn't know about my pregnancy and I would prefer, please, if you didn't tell him at all. The third being, take care of my parents, Maria. I love you, be happy, and thank you for being not only a friend to me but a sister. In the meantime, I promise to be in touch.

With love and regret, your sister,

Liz Parker

Three Hours Later:

Liz stared pensively out the window as the bus left Roswell, New Mexico. Feeling defeated, she lay back against the seat rest thinking about all the good and bad times she was leaving behind. This was it. This was the end to Liz's old life and the beginning to a new one. Liz wasn't naive. She knew this journey into the unknown would be tough, especially pregnant and alone. Guzzling her second bottle of orange juice, with sugar, in the last hour, Liz pulled out her most recent book 'What to Expect when Your Expecting' by Arlene Eisenberg. She was reading exactly that when she felt herself drift into a sound sleep. Close to an hour later, Liz awakened well rested with an urge to pee, badly. Luckily, the bus was pulling into a rest stop in... Where were they? Liz glanced around trying to see where exactly they were.

Parking, the old weary bus driver stood, receiving everyone's attention. "Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, please be back, note the time, at this bus 162 by 10:30. The bus will leave with or without you by 10:35. Now just in case you do not get back in time, I suggest everyone to take their luggage with them. Have a nice day." 'Unusual', she thought, valiantly holding her bladder as an old couple slowly proceeded to walk in front of her. Sighing, Liz patiently waited before climbing off the bus. Grabbing her bags 'just in case’, she quickly walked across the large sweltering parking lot. It was at least ninety-two degrees outside with not a breeze in sight. Liz's jeans stuck to her thighs and sweat ran down her spine as she traveled the distance through hell. Entering the air-conditioned rest area, she, sighing in relief, went about finding a bathroom. Two minutes later, there was a line. Liz really had a huge urge to stomp her feet and wail, like a baby, but instead she patiently waited, pacing. Finally, it was her turn. Running over to a stall, Liz, silently cursed, while struggling to get both luggage bags and her book bag through the door. She was going to pee on herself. She just knew it.

Finally, Liz found a way to get both herself and the luggage through the door. Now there was the problem of getting the door to shut. Sh-- Liz thought desperately, before... solving the problem by putting the bags on the floor. Liz calmly closed the door as others gawked while trying to hold in their laughter. She had a real tremendous urge to show them something really hilarious, like her finger. But the bathroom won out. At least three minutes later, coming out of the bathroom stall, Liz sighed in relief. Washing her hands before pulling out a washcloth from her book bag, Liz wiped her face before brushing the tangles from her hair.

Exiting the restroom, Liz went to straight to a fast food restaurant, built inside the rest stop, called 'Fast Food'. 'Hmmmm, very imaginative' Liz thought. Ordering a medium sized pizza with everything, two large lemonades, and two side orders of cheese fries to stay, Liz sat down at a small table, where she had stash her bags upon entering. Eating leisurely, Liz didn't notice the time go past. She was too caught up in her cheese fries and thoughts. She had already finished off the pizza, one container of cheese fries, and a container of lemonade. Liz wasn't even trying to think about gaining weight. She was eating for three now, so she had an excuse. Finishing off the rest of her fries, Liz cleaned up her mess before grabbing her lemonade in one hand and the luggage in the other. Glancing at her wristwatch, Liz gasped before running as fast as she could with her luggage and lemonade to the parking lot. But by the time she had arrived it was too late. The bus was long gone. Panting for air, Liz dropped her bags in defeat. She was stuck... at a rest stop... in, reading the welcome sign, Liz rolled her eyes toward the mocking blue sky.... before reading the sign again. Roswell, New Mexico
That Very Afternoon

‘Where was she?’ Maria worried, trying Liz’s cell again for the third time today. Liz never missed school unless it was a life or death situation and she always kept her cell on. “Hey.” Michael greeted, sitting before her outside in the squad. “Hey.” Maria sighed with worry coloring her usual vibrant green eyes. Suddenly alert, Michael asked sharply. ”What’s wrong?” Maria sat silently for a few minutes before replying, “Liz never came to school today…” Michael stared at Maria blankly…trying to comprehend the problem. “Ok…so she missed school today, big deal. I always miss school.” Maria looked exasperated, “We’re not talking about ‘you’ here, Michael. Liz never misses school unless...there is something wrong. God, I'm so scared. This is not like, Liz. She would at least leave on her cell. I have a really bad feeling about this, Michael." "Listen, why don't you just call her at home? Knowing Liz, she's probably sick or something." Michael shrugged, trying to wipe the panic look off of Maria's face.

"Ok...so where's Max and Tess? I haven't had the urge to gag in a few days." Maria asked glancing around the court yard, curiously. "Don't know, don't care. Max and Tess are in their own little world..." Maria grew suspicious then, "Of what...?" Michael shrugged, defensive, "I don't know, Maria. I'm not Maxwell's keeper." Michael snapped, angrily, before getting up to walk away. Grabbing his arm, "What's going on, Michael? What are you not telling me?" Maria demanded beyond suspicious. "Max and Tess are married... as of this morning." Michael sighed, waiting for the hurricane. "What?" Maria exploded. "Michael, when were you going to tell me?" Maria hissed, as she ignored glances from her classmates. "Seeing your reaction, the answer would've been never." Michael muttered. Then Maria went suddenly pale, "Does Liz know? Oh my god." Maria whispered, quickly grabbing up her things. "What are you doing? Where are you going?" Michael called irritated at Maria's abrupt exit. "To Liz's..." She called, hopping into the Jetta before speeding away.

Ten Minutes Later

Maria pulled up outside of the 'Crash Down' to find it was closed. All the lights were off and the doors locked. Maria, then, went up the fire escape to Liz's balcony. Walking over to the window, Maria came upon a distraught Mr. and Mrs. Parker sitting solemnly on Liz’s neatly made bed. She became terrified, then. Something was definitely wrong "Mr. Parker Mrs. Parker, hey, what's going on?" Maria asked climbing through the window, coming upon a grief-stricken Jeff Parker and even more devastated Nancy Parker. Maria knew then that things would never be the same again. "My baby's gone..." Nancy Parker sobbed. Standing up, Jeff handed Maria an envelope with Maria's name neatly written in Liz's handwriting. Maria's knees almost buckled then, tears clouding her vision as all her questions were answered in one gesture. "Thank you?" Maria swallowed as Jeff Parker nodded before leading a weeping Nancy Parker out of the bedroom. Maria slumped upon the bed as she held the envelope. Staring blindly a head, she came to the full force realization that... Lizzie was gone.

It took Maria at least a half of an hour, after slightly crying her way to sleep, to read Liz's letter. After having cried her heart out some more, she crawled limply upon Liz's comforter, exhausted. Maria lay staring at the envelope next to her trying to get up the courage to read. Looking toward Liz’s window she saw that the sun was setting in the sky. Glancing at the clock, she noticed it was three in the afternoon. Finally sitting Indian style, she tore the seal. Her heart pounded against her ribs as she began reading Liz’s handwriting. This being one of the hardest trials of her life, Maria tried to make sense of the words blurring before her eyes. Wiping away her tears, Maria drew in a breath to calm her emotions before reading the letter successfully for the third time. Upon finishing the letter, Maria was no longer in tears but boiling angry. Furious actually. And she could only think of one person she could take it out on. Max Evans.

Fifteen Minutes later, Maria pounded up the three flights of stairs to Max’s apartment. Seeing as though, she hadn’t seen either the Alien king or his gerbil of a wife in school today. Maria chose to start the search at their apartment. On the hunt, Maria stalked down the hall never noticing Michael coming the other way, so lost in thought. “Maria?” Michael called, suspiciously, grabbing her arm as she sailed past him in a fury he knew only to well. Startled Maria glanced up, “Oh Michael… not now I have some aliens' a--- to kick!” Maria smiled patting him on the chest before trying to sail past him once again. “Oh no you don’t, Deluca. Get back here. You do not want to go in there.” “Oh yeah, Space boy, why the hell the not?” “Because… Because… you just don’t want to go in there!” Michael stammered dragging her into the other direction. “Michael… let go…” Maria gritted out, trying to stand her ground while being dragged in the process. Yanking Michael’s arm up, she bit him sharply, leaving teeth marks. Michael howled in pain, yanking his arm away before rubbing it in relief as he watched Maria stalk to the door. Cursing a blue streak, Michael stalked down the hall just as Maria swung the door open to 305.

Maria blinked at the scene before her. The scene wasn’t shocking so much as sickening. The scene was of Tess and Max making out on the couch half clothed. Startled at the door slamming, Max and Tess jumped apart to see a furious Maria Deluca and an exhausted Michael Guerin. Seeing the wild look in Maria’s eyes, Max asked,” Maria is everything ok?” Standing up at her silence, Max moved in front of her with nothing more than jeans on. Maria saw her opportunity. She swung, punching Max square in the nose, knocking him off his feet. Blood squirted out as, Max grunted holding his nose. “Maria! Max, are you alright?” Tess cried out running over to hold her shirt over his nose. Seeing two Maria’s, Max crossed his eyes before bringing them back into focus. Michael just stood there quietly, impressed by Maria’s punch.

Rubbing her sore hand, Maria looked down upon Max and Tess with disgust so deep that it hurt. “That was nothing compared to the pain you caused Liz.” Maria whispered as she watched Max’s face go pale with anguish upon the mention of Liz’s name. “She’s gone Max…” “What?” Michael asked, shocked. “She left us and this time… it wasn’t to go on some vacation. She’s gone for good and all because you couldn’t keep your pants up. I use to feel sorry for you because I obviously thought you deserved Liz… I guess I was wrong.” Maria whispered, pain clouding fury “Where is she, Maria?” Michael asked watching Max. “I don’t know, Michael. She’s my best friend and she’s out there somewhere!” Maria responded in frustration, her voice becoming shrill with worry. Looking into Max’s guilty eyes, Maria wanted to scream. “I hope you’re happy, Max. I really do… and maybe this is for the best because you obviously don’t know a good thing when it’s staring you straight in the face!” Calmly turning toward the door, Maria looked back once more to find Max’s eyes filled with guilt and tears. This should really hit him hard. “And just one more thing Max… when you were with Liz that day… did you ever think that maybe without the use of a condom you might of gotten her pregnant… because she is… pregnant that is.” Maria whispered shutting the door silently, betraying her emotions.

Sprawled in the same spot, Max felt as if someone was slowly but surely ripping out his heart. Head pounding and nose bleeding, Max watched as Michael followed her out. Ignoring Tess’s shock, Max slowly came to his feet. Suddenly feeling Tess’s arms around him, Max stood before slowly pushing her away. Max was filled with a blinding rage and pain that erupted into something more. He destroyed the living room in seconds. Bookcases were knocked over, the 13 inch TV flew across the room, the stereo following it; the coffee table crashed into another wall, while Max’s fist flew into the remaining wall. Sobbing in anguish, Max flew around the living room as if he was a tornado. Tess stood silent in shock, anger, and pain as she watched Max’s rampage. Finally moving to stop Max, she wrapped her arms around him as he collapsed to the floor in exhaustion. Sobbing into his hands, Max heart broke once again over the fact that Liz wasn’t just alone but alone and pregnant.

8 Months Later
Clovis, New Mexico

“Crash Down Café, Maria speaking.” Liz gripped the phone in homesickness and pain as Maria’s voice filled the other end. Silently, Liz tried unsuccessfully to hold back her tears. “Liz…?” Maria whispered, beckoning the Parkers over furiously. “I’m fine, Maria. I love you!” “I love you too, Chica. Where are you?” Liz cut the line abruptly, choking back tears as she pocketed her cell. Glancing at her wristwatch, she saw her lunch was almost over. Eating quickly, Liz barely struggled to her aching feet. Eight months pregnant and she felt like a whale, literally. She was twice the size of a normal pregnancy and this terrified Liz. She felt as if any moment she was going to burst. Liz had grown large fast. She couldn’t wait for this to end but at the same time dreaded the idea of going into labor alone.

Straightening her waitress uniform, Liz made her way into the small crowded diner called, ‘Sandy’s Desert’. Eight months ago today, Liz had wondered her way into town by taxi. Upon arriving into Clovis, she was reminded of Roswell without the alien themes. It wasn’t a small town by Roswell standards but it wasn’t large town either. Exiting the cab, Liz traveled into the nearest place that held air conditioning and food and there it was Sandy’s Desert. Ordering a drink, Liz’s gaze instantly fell upon the poster above her head. ‘Waitresses Wanted’ Liz had immediately jumped on the poster as a sign. She needed the money badly but she also needed a place of residence. Just so happens, Sandy Lewis, grandmother, widow, and owner of Sandy’s Desert, rented out rooms down the street in her three story home. She was a cheerful, energetic woman, rarely upset. Liz immediately got a good feeling about Sandy upon meeting.

Eight months later, Liz stood in the same diner serving plates on swollen ankles. Sandy tried unsuccessfully to make Liz ‘rest’ at home, even going so far as to threaten to fire her. Liz laughed at this knowing that Sandy didn’t have a malicious bone in her body. They had become good friends in the last eight months. There was a time or two when their friendship tested its limits. Simply because Sandy chose to ask questions and Liz refused to answer them, becoming silent and withdrawn. She had to constantly remind herself that she was alone and that’s how it had to be. Liz was grateful to Sandy and loved her like a mother but if push came to shove and she had to leave… She wanted to be prepared and working three shifts prepared her.

Serving a customer, Liz never noticed a blonde- haired girl take a booth in her section. “Yo cornball, can a chic get some service ova here.” Liz froze dropping a plate of food in the customer’s lap. She turned her head slowly toward the voice, ignoring the man’s curses as she felt her world crashing down before her eyes. ‘No, No, No’ she thought in a fury. Stunned, she came upon a sight that shocked the breath out of her. Ava was no longer the pierced, scared teenager with highlights from New York. She no longer wore Goth clothing but a pair regular jean shorts with a short sleeve t-shirt that stated her maturity. Liz would’ve sworn that she was Tess, if it wasn’t for the New York accent of course. This discovery, however, didn’t deter her thoughts of running. “Ava?” Liz whispered, stepping towards the blonde’s table “In the flesh cornball, so…what are you doing in Clovis, Yo? And pregnant to beat, I never thought you had it in you, Lizzie.” “Yeah well me neither, what can I get you?” She asked trying to come to turns with seeing Ava. Liz’s fears were reinforced. The premonitions that her babies were still in danger heightened those fears

Taking Ava’s order, Liz made her rounds. She had to force her limbs to move and her lips to speak. Placing a plate in front of Ava, Liz asked suspiciously,” So what are you doing in Clovis? I never would’ve thought you for such ‘cornball’ town?” This made Ava laugh, Liz didn’t think a damn thing was funny. She had wanted to escape this, the alien abyss and here she was being sucked in again. “Yeah me neither, yo. But… I’m happy in this town. I get to lead a normal life I neva had in the Subways. All in all I’m free. How about you, Lizzie? Why ain’t you in Harvard or someplace getting your degree?” Liz’s gaze went to her large protruding stomach in answer as a lump formed in her throat. “Max’s?” Ava asked getting the point. “Yeah… I gotta go. If that’s all pay up at the counter” Liz whispered in despair, turning away. “Liz wait… how about we meet up after you get off. You know catch up?” Ava asked, sensing Liz’s despair while needing a friend herself. Liz looked undecided, “No I don’t think that’s a good idea, Ava. But it was nice seeing you again.” “You neva were a good liar cornball.” Ava called smiling sadly as Liz escaped into the bathroom.

Closing up later on that night, an exhausted Liz wobbled her way down the street to Sandy’s house when she heard a voice several blocks behind her. Speeding up her steps, Liz tried to ignore Ava’s voice which was getting closer and closer with every step she took. “Cornball, wait up…” Ava called from the inside of a small blue Toyota. “Won’t you stop bein so stubborn, yo, and get in the car!” “Stalking is illegal, you know.” “Yeah so is many things, get in the damn car Liz. You look as if you bout to collapse!” Ava called in annoyance. Sighing, Liz stopped and glared at Ava. She felt as if she was about ready to collapse that was the only damn reason she climbed into that car. Pulling off, Ava sped down the street.

Pulling up outside of Sandy’s, Liz climbed out of the car as fast as she could without a thank you, leaving Ava to go away. Closing the door, Liz locked it, putting on the chain as well, before moving toward the kitchen. Sighing Liz dropped into a chair in exhaustion. At the moment, Sandy was out of town visiting her sisters in California. She wouldn’t be back till next week which meant that Liz had the whole house to herself. Babies kicking, Liz laid palms on her moving belly, laughing and wincing as another kick came. She remembered the first flutter of movement as if it were yesterday. Four months ago to be exact, Liz was dancing and singing to Dido’s ‘Here With me’ when she felt a flutter of movement. She had learned in the months following that if she wanted to feel any limb at all from her babies all she had to do was play that song. Smiling fondly, Liz was startled out of her chair to see Ava in the kitchen doorway looking a bit annoyed.

“You know that’s breaking and entering?” “Yeah so, you were rude!” Ava said defensively. Wincing Liz became filled with guilt at the way she was treating Ava. “Sorry…, I just had a long day. Not that that’s any excuse.” Liz smiled, the smile in question never reaching her eyes. “That’s aight cornball. You got anything to eat up in this piece? I’m hungry.” Ava asked looking through the contents of the refrigerator. “I’ll make some sandwiches.” Liz sighed, struggling to stand up. Finally succeeding with Ava’s help, Liz made her way to the counter slowly pulling out the contents that would make a sandwich. Minor contractions flowed threw her as she stood making the sandwiches. Any day now Liz thought as she went to pour juice. But just in the mist of pouring, she was gripped by a hard contraction that tore through her making her cry out in pain. Looking up instantly from the boiling pot of soup Liz made her put on, Ava cried out Liz’s name as she watched the container of juice spill to the floor. Liz felt something pop instantly in the mist of her pain. Water and white mucus splashed down her legs, Liz stood motionless before looking up into Ava’s concerned gaze. “Are you alright?” Liz shook her head numbly before whispering, “No, my water broke!”

“Push Liz… C’mon Cornball push…” Ava chanted as Liz strained, gritting her teeth as another contraction hit her hard. As the pain receded, Liz slumped back against her pillows, sweat beading down her forehead. Ava wiped it off, as another contraction rolled through Ava taunted, “C’mon you weaklin. I knows you can do better than that. Push Cornball!” Liz let out a scream mingled with rage and fear. “I am pushing you, b---!” Ava laughed hysterically making Liz all the more furious. Ava gasped as she glanced down, “I see the head, Lizzie. It’ll be over soon.” Gasping for breath, Liz nodded. Fifteen-twenty minutes later of labor, a loud furious wail pierced the air as Ava slapped it’s bottom. Looking to see what it was, Ava grinned. “Lizzie…” Opening her eyes from pure exhaustion, Liz watched as Ava placed a squealing baby in her arms. “It’s a girl!” Ava whispered in wonder fingering the dark mop of curls. Liz breath stilled as she looked upon her daughter. Stroking a finger down her soft cheeks, Liz met the eyes of her first born. “What are you goin to name her, Liz?” Liz smiled proudly at her small, alert baby girl nibbling her tiny fists. “Amelia Selene Parker”

Washing a sleeping Amelia quickly before placing her in a white body suit with a pink receiving blanket and a cap, Ava placed her in a basinet. “Oh god, it’s time to push again” Liz whispered piercing the silence. Bewildered, Ava turned around, “What?” Breathing, Liz pushed herself up, hair plastered to her head. “I’m having twins.” “Oh…oh” Ava breathed before moving toward the bed again. “Here we go…” as Liz had another contraction. A half hour later, Ava was cutting the umbilical cord of a tiny baby boy. Liz lay half unconscious, slipping in and out of consciousness. “Cornball wake up, it’s time to meet your son.” Ava called jerking Liz awake. Liz sat up as she held out her arms. ‘God he was so tiny, smaller than Amelia’ she thought as he remained silent and alert. “Hello little guy.” Stroking his dark head while looking into his eyes, Liz thought about Alex and how much she missed him. “What’s his name?” Ava asked grinning. “Alexavier Maximos Parker… Alex for short.”

Chapter 1
9 Years Later
Clovis, New Mexico

“Mom, I can’t find my sneakers?” Alex called down, frustrated, as his sister, Amelia, sprinted up the steps, pushing past him into the bathroom. “Hey…?” Alex called indignantly. “Girls” he muttered, shaking his head before searching for his favorite sneakers in the hall closet. “Mom… I can’t find them.” “Look in the kitchen, Alex, where I specifically told you not to leave them...” Liz called up from the living room, rolling her eyes, exasperatingly. “Amelia, let’s go. Stop primping and get out of the bathroom. Aunt Ava’s almost here.” Alex shouted banging on the bathroom door. “I’m coming. I’m coming. God, you act you like we never went swimming before.” Amelia replied swinging open the bathroom door.

“Ohhh, mom’s never going to let you go like that. You look ugly enough without looking like a clown.” Alex laughed. Amelia replied by sticking out her tongue while switching out the bathroom. “Shut up. Doofus, you wouldn’t know pretty if it bit you in the ….” She gasped in surprise. “Amelia, say it and regret it!” Liz scolded as she awaited the battle that was to come. “He started it mom.” “Nuh- uh, I can’t help it if she looks like a clown.” “That’s enough, Alex. Did you remember your towel and swimming trunks?” Liz reminded her son as he came into view. “Oh darn…” before thudding back upstairs. “Let’s see you, princess.” Liz called as her daughter stood on the staircase, hiding. “Mom, promise you won’t say anything.” Liz grinned, remaining silent. They had this argument every time Amelia decided take a step into public, which was usually every day. “Mom…?” “Come down, Amelia.” “Oh alright.”

Finally, Amelia came out of hiding to watch her mother’s eyes go wide with surprise, eyebrows raised in question. Stiffening a giggle, “Do I know you?” “Mom…” Amelia whined, looking a bit uncertain of what was to come. “How do I look?” “Not like my little girl.” “I’m not a little girl, mom, I’m nine….” Interrupting her, “Your eight, you won’t be nine for another six months…” “I know but I’m almost nine and Samantha Charles’s mom said she could where make up any time she liked.” Liz sternly watches Amelia finish her tirade, trying her best not to smile. “Well, Amelia, I’m not Samantha’s mom. I’m yours…” Standing up, Liz moved toward her daughter. “And no eight year old of mine is stepping outside of this household looking as if she was eight-teen. So go up stairs and we’ll see what we can do.” Grumbling, Amelia stomped her way up the steps.

“Alex, off the computer” Liz called as she ushered Amelia into the bathroom. Tilting her daughters face, she smiled. Hidden beneath the make up, Amelia had her father’s soulful eyes. Those deep, hazel brown eyes hidden beneath a ton of makeup stared up at her pleadingly. Smoothing back Amelia’s soft sable brown hair that fell to her shoulders, Liz sighed with love and a hint of sadness. “Mama…” Amelia whispered sensing her mother’s sadness. “Yeah baby…” “Are you thinking about Daddy again?” It wasn’t a day that went by when Liz didn’t think of Max whether in anger, sadness, regret, or just plain yearning. It hit her the hardest at night when she lay in bed alone a sailed by the memories.

“A little. But there are other things… like how beautiful you are without makeup.” “Mom…” “Shhh… let’s make a deal.” “Ok” “I’ll let you wear make up outside of the house only on the weekends but… either I or your Aunt Ava has to put it on for you.” Amelia thought about it for a moment before breaking out into a huge grin. “Okay, shake on it.” Liz laughed this time before shaking her daughter’s hand. “Ok let’s take this makeup off.” “Oh mom…” Amelia whined. “Ok if you let me wash this off. I’ll let you put on a small, ‘very small amount’ of lipstick. Got it.” “Ooo-kaay-doe-kaay.” “Mom, Aunt Ava’s here.” Alex called from downstairs.

“Oh c’mon Liz it’ll be fun, yo.” Liz smiled standing in Ava’s bedroom doorway, as Ava herself sprinted around the room looking for her bathing suit. “Can we go already?” Alex called from downstairs impatiently. “Yeah hold ya horses… Yes, found it.” Ava grinned triumphal. “You sure you don’t want to go?’ Ava asked watching her, intently. “Positive, you guys have fun. I have a date grading papers.” Liz responded following Ava downstairs. “Alright suit yourself. You guys ready?” “Like last year…” Alex complained as he and Amelia stood waiting by the door. Liz smiled faintly as Alex’s attitude once again reminded her of Michael. Alex wasn’t the least bit shy in speaking his mind. “Alright you guys, behave.” “Ok, bye mom.” “Bye mom. I’m sitting in the front.” “In your dreams, doofus.” Amelia called after him as he ran to Ava’s used 03’ bright yellow beetle. Liz laughed softly,” Good luck.” Ava grinned back at her companionably. “You sure you don’t want to come along, cornball?” “Positive, have fun.” Liz laughed closing the door behind her.

Liz reveled in the silence of the house, her home, as she graded papers. She loved teaching, especially something as important to her as science. She had come along way from being a scared knocked up teenager. After having given labor to Amelia and Alex, Liz had realized that she was no longer alone. She was responsible for not one but two lives. She couldn’t afford to put her babies’ lives in the hands of fate. So close to a month later, Liz was renting a cheap two-bedroom apartment with Ava as her roommate across town. Sandy, of course, put up a fight at first, arguing that Liz could stay as long as she wanted for free, but Liz refused.

She needed to do this on her own, to stand on her own two feet without a crutch or support from someone else. It was hard, very difficult to be a correct description. Liz worked full time, first shift, while Ava worked just as hard on the night shift at Clovis Inn cleaning rooms. In the meantime, Liz took care of the twins’ breastfeeding them while Ava bottle fed them during the day when Liz was at work. They split the rent and the bills each. Liz couldn’t comprehend how she would’ve of survived if Ava hadn’t came along. Finally after two years of saving every penny she had, Liz bought a small traditional-ranch style home with four bedrooms and two baths.

On sight Liz fell in love. With a couple of loans from the bank and the money she saved over, Liz put a down-payment on the house. Finally settled, she quit her job as a waitress at Sandy’s diner. Liz’s dream of going to Harvard and becoming a Molecular Biologist were over, done but that didn’t mean she had to waitress for the rest of her life. Liz was hard worker, therefore it wasn’t in her nature to just laze about and waste her life away even if she hadn’t had kids. But she did and that made it all the more important to finish High School. So with Ava’s help and support, she enrolled herself into a correspondence school called ‘Home study International Online’. After almost a year was up, Liz was handed her High school Diploma. For a graduating present that day Ava took the babies for the whole afternoon as Liz slept off a year of babies and papers.

After a few months of rest and spending time with Amelia and Alex, Liz thought about College. She wasn’t done she knew that. Liz wanted more out of life than a High school Diploma. She wanted a degree. So Liz enrolled herself into Clovis Community College with the idea of majoring in Education, preferably, Secondary Education with the option of Science. Liz thought that if she couldn’t perform her dreams of becoming a biologist that she could teach others to love science just as much as she did. Two years later, she was looking at two more years of College before she could get her Bachelors Degree. But first she needed a time out for Alex and Amelia.

They were almost five and growing fast. Liz couldn’t help but think that she had missed out on most of the four years of their lives. Regret twisted her stomach in knots on a daily basis as she watched Amelia and Alex grow. Poor Ava, she was always exhausted from working the night shift and taking care of the babies while Liz was away. This hurt Liz because she knew she was the cause, but Ava never complained. Liz had taken advantage and she knew some groveling was in order. So she decided to take a longer break than planned and start looking forr work again but this time as a secretary for a legal Firm called Howard & Henley. Liz was finally content, then, with being a mom and a friend.

Snapping out of her thoughts by the phone ringing, Liz answered. “Hello…” “Hey Liz, this is Kevin. I just wanted to know if we were still on for dinner tomorrow night.” “Uhh- yes eight right?” “Yes, so I’ll see you then.” “Ummm wait where are going?” Trying clear her head of grades. “It’s a surprise.” He said smiling through the phone. Liz smiled as well, “Ok give me a hint here. Is it casual or formal?” “Formal, see you then.” “Bye” “Bye” Hanging up the phone, Liz smiled. She had been dating Kevin now for at least six months. He was cute. Dirty blonde hair that curled around his neck, dark green eyes that sparkled in amusement, and a grin with dimples that left Liz smiling as well. Tall and broad shouldered, Kevin would be anyone’s dream man but Liz’s.

Maybe that was reason she was dating him. He didn’t get her smoldering hot and couldn’t tear her apart if he so chose. Kevin was just the opposite. He made her laugh and simmer just enough to be hot but in control. He was someone Liz would consider marrying, if asked, simply because of the fact that he was the exact opposite of her type. At thirty-six, single and a successful attorney, Kevin and Liz met briefly years ago at Howard and Henley. But then six months ago, they had run into each other at the supermarket where they flirted before Liz was asked to dinner.

Refusing politely, Liz left it as that not yet ready for a relationship on top of everything else. But then, the single white roses started to show up outside of her classroom. Then once and a while he would show up after school to walk to her car. At first Liz was kind of worried that she might have attracted a stalker but slowly as the months progressed Liz finally agreed to go on a date with him, mace and powers ready. But he surprised her and had been doing so every since.

Liz rarely had time to think about Max with the kids, her career, and Kevin keeping her busy but when she thought about him… It was as if all those emotions, from now and then, slammed into her forcing her to break down. It hit her the hardest when she was alone especially at night when she could remember how it felt to be held by him, to remember the certainty that no matter what he would always love her. But then reality would knock and the former would only be memory and the latter a fools dream.

Liz never regretted leaving Roswell simply for the fact of her babies being in danger. But she also learned in the past nine years of growing up that you couldn’t change the future simply by running away. Her babies were going to get hurt she couldn’t stop that as much as she tried because their parents DNA and mistakes would always be with them. The only thing she could do was to teach them how to protect themselves by honing and practicing their gifts with the help of Ava. They were quick and learning fast. Amelia had inherited Isabel’s gift to dream walk. Alex inherited his gift from Michael, to attack if threatened. Liz’s powers were dormant as of now, thankfully. She hadn’t woken up from or seen the future in a very long time. But Liz knew what was to come and dreaded that day as it came.

The phone jerked Liz out of her thoughts once again. Sighing, Liz answered. “Hello…” “Well if it isn’t the illusive Liz Parker.” Liz’s heart slammed into her ribs, her breath caught in a gasp at the voice on the other end. “Maria?” “One and the same.” Liz clutched the phone tight, tears filling her eyes. “How-How did you get my number?” Liz whispered, trying her best to breath. She didn’t know whether to cry from happiness or fear. “Oh… did a little investigating here and there and realized you’re not but only forty-five minutes away. So what’s it been Lizzie nine years? ““Yeah… long huh” “That long. That long since you last called but not as long since your father was buried.”

Liz froze in silence for a few moments, horror and anguish rolling over her in waves. Liz didn’t believe for a minute Maria was lying. Gasping, Liz cough, choking off her bile as she ran towards the bathroom, dropping the phone in the process. Oh god… oh god. Retching in the toilet, she cried hard. It hurt. It hurt so badly. Leaning against the wall, Liz wept into her palms. She sat there for an eternity crying. Liz couldn’t fathom her father being dead, being buried. Liz didn’t here the kids or Ava come in downstairs. She didn’t here Ava enter her room or pick up the phone and she certainly didn’t here the conversation that took place.

Moments later, Ava found Liz in the exact spot, staring unblinkingly at the wall, not making a sound as Ava entered the bathroom. “Lizzie… Lizzie” Ava whispered before shaking her. Liz sobbed, gut wrenchingly then, crying out in anger and pain. “Oh Lizzie…” Ava pulled into a hug, rocking her back and forth. “He’s dead. My daddy is dead” Liz whispered, tears leaking out of her eyes as she calm down. “I know Lizzie. I know. C’mon, Lizzie get up off this cold floor and lay down.” Liz went along obediently, lying under the covers, silently, staring up at the ceiling. “When do you wanna leave?” It seem like it took Liz an eternity to answer. At first Ava thought that she hadn’t heard or she had heard but wasn’t listening when she answered in a whisper, her eyes vacant. “Monday morning.”

Roswell, New Mexico
Monday Morning

“Dad…wake up.” Max moaned, whimpering, in his sleep, flipping face down into his pillow. “Liz…don’t go.” “Dad wake up.” Alexander Maxwell Evans called trying to nudge his dad awake. Max jerked his eyes open at Zan’s voice before groaning in despair. “Zan, buddy, another hour. Another hour…” He pleaded, squinting, with one eye open into a pair of merciless green eyes. “You promised. Father and Son day, remember?” Max sighed before he opened both eyes. “Yeah, I remember. Where’s your mom?” He grunted sitting up in bed. Zan shrugged, climbing on top of the bed beside his father, mimicking his position. Max caught his son mimicking his movements. “I guess she’s still in bed. Dad…” Zan yelped, his childish laughter filling the room, while Max tickled him mercilessly. Zan finally escaped, leaping from bed to race from the room. “C’mon, dad. Let’s go wake up mom?” Max watched his son enter Tess’s room before closing his door.

Things had been tense between Max and Tess since she found out he had hired an investigator to find Liz. Almost nine years had gone by since that day Liz left and with his child. Almost nine years since he hired an investigator to find out Liz’s whereabouts. He had questions and he had wanted them answered, then and now. Was she alive? Was she happy? Did she have his child? Why hadn’t she told him? Why had she run? Didn’t she think it was his right to be there for their baby? All these questions and more burdened him since the day she left. At times he could convince himself that they were safe and that their child was alive and safe. And then the doubt came till felt he would go insane from the questions.

Soon enough it had turn into a secret obsession to find Liz and his child. He had to find them but no one was to know about it especially not Tess. They had come along way and were if anything but friends. They shared a child, a household but from the day when his dreams started about Liz he no longer shared her bed. It wasn’t fair to him and it definitely wasn’t fair to Tess. Tess was furious about this at first, still is actually after nine years, but she had contented herself with the thought that if he wasn’t pressured that they would once again be happy.

Max was afraid that that wouldn’t happen as much as he wished it could. His love for Liz hadn’t diminished simply because she was gone. He had made mistakes, many of them actually, but he couldn’t change the past. Max was a man who had learned slowly but surely from his mistakes. He knew and regretted how much he hurt Liz. He wished he could’ve made her happy but he realized that being the man that he was, it just wasn’t possible. The only thing that kept him going these days, the only thing that really mattered next to the knowledge that he had child somewhere out there, was Zan.

The investigator, Damien Roberts, contacted Max not a week ago about Liz’s whereabouts. She lived in Clovis, a forty-five minute drive away, to Max’s surprise. She was an elementary teacher. Looking through blurry photos of Liz, Max had remained blank as Damien told him of the extensive hunt he went on to find Ms. Parker and how he deserved more than what Max was paying. After showing Mr. Roberts the exit, Max in a trance stumbled into his office to realize that he had indeed found Liz. Now what was he going to do about it?

He thought about traveling up to Clovis himself but nixed that idea. Then he thought about the person who had just as much right as he to know the whereabouts of Liz, Maria Deluca. Eight years ago, they weren’t ‘girlfriends’ much less on speaking terms, much to his regret. He missed Maria and her antics, and tried unsuccessfully; to gain that bond again they had formed the summer Liz left. But it wasn’t possible Maria still blamed him for Liz leaving and he couldn’t fault her because she was right. It was his fault. Now nine years later, they weren’t the best of friends but they were on speaking terms. It took place at Michael and Maria’s wedding three years ago where they decided to let the past rest.

After a shower, Max made his way down stairs to the chatter of voices and giggling. Striding into the kitchen in a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt, he found Tess and Zan sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast consisting of Max’s favorite blueberry pancakes, eggs and cheese, and fruit. Max stopped in surprise. “Oh Max, good morning. I made your favorite.” Tess smiled, cheerfully rising to give a smack of a kiss on his lips. Max stood stunned at this turn around from Tess who was hardly speaking to him last night at dinner. “So I see, what’s the occasion?” Max asked sitting down beside Zan, who was at the moment grinning happily at the scene between his mom and dad.

They didn’t know that he felt the tension in the air when they were fighting, or that he heard the arguing in the middle of the night when they thought he was asleep, and or the fact he heard and saw his mother’s crying when she thought no one was around. He knew they weren’t happy and hated it but for now was content with the fact that they were talking. “Oh nothing just thought I’d do something special for you.” Max nodded, pushing away his suspicion that Tess was up to something. It was just something in her eyes.

“Thank you.” Max replied studying her. “Your welcome, now eat up. I’m going to go with Isabel to do some shopping and see movie. What are you guys up to today?” Tess asked looking everywhere but into Max’s steady gaze. “Mom…its father son day, remember?” Zan answered woofing down his pancakes. “Slow down, Zan..” Tess commanded ruffling her son’s dark hair before meeting Max’s eyes, again, steadily. Tess stood suddenly, “Well I’d better be going. I told Isabel I’d meet her at 10. You guys have fun.” Kissing both Zan and Max on the cheek, Tess left, in quite a hurry actually. “You ready, buddy?” Max asked after finishing his breakfast and washing their dishes. “Yeah, where are we going first?” Max grinned. “Fishing with Grandpa.”

A few hours later

The car was filled with tension and worry as they traveled down route 69. Liz stared out into the desert, pensively. Ava glanced at her in worry. She hadn’t said a word since leaving and not much before leaving either. She looked drawn and tired, with evidence of shadows under her eyes. Ava wasn’t the only one worried. Alex and Amelia sat in silence, not wanting to disturb their mom. They knew she needed to think and adjust to her fathers’ death and to going back to Roswell. Mom never talked about her past but if asked about their father… she wouldn’t hold anything back from them. They knew this was hard for her and so remained silent.

Alex and Amelia were naturally protective of their mother and couldn’t stand to see her in pain, whether this was apart of their alien side or human side they didn’t know. They just wanted their mom to stop hurting. They frowned as Aunt Ava turned on the radio, breaking the silence. “Sorry can’t stand the silence, I’ll turn it off Liz if you want me to?” Liz shook herself, whispering, “No, it’s ok . Turn it up.” Liz needed something to distract her from her thoughts. She had made so many mistakes in the past for the simple fact that she was thinking off herself. Her father was dead. He would never get to meet his grandchildren. He died without ever knowing if Liz was alive or dead. Not to mention, she never got the chance to tell him how much she loved him and how sorry she was.

They had been driving for close to a half hour when Dido’s ‘Here with me’ came on. Amelia couldn’t help it this was her favorite song. She started singing the lyrics to the song, quietly. Alex nudged her frowning, looking at her pointedly. ‘What was she doing?’ Mom’s hurting and she’s singing. Alex shook his exasperatingly. Amelia went silent at Alex message before nodding understandingly. Liz glanced back, “Aren’t you going sing, Amelia. It’ll cheer me up if you do?” Liz smiled sadly knowing how bad her baby liked this song and actually it did cheer her up.

Knowing that her kids were happy made her happy even if for a little while. “Ok…” Amelia replied shyly while Ava turned up the radio. Alex shrugged before ignoring everyone all together. He had some things to think about himself, like about finally meeting his father. Alex wasn’t stupid or forgetful. He knew his mother wasn’t just hurting over her dad dying. There was something else and he would bet that something else was his father, Max Evans. He was jerked instantly out of his thoughts by Amelia, Aunt Ava, and his mom belting out the last of the lyrics ‘Here with me’ by Dido. He smiled, shaking his head in bewilderment. ‘Weird, girls are just weird.’

A few moments later, “Liz, we’re almost there.” Ava commented as they passed into the alien theme trap also known as Roswell, New Mexico. The car instantly grew grim then. Liz continued to stare out the passenger seat window in silence. She never would’ve thought that this day would come so soon where she would be going home. Almost nine years and two kids later, Liz was finally going home. ‘But to what ‘she asked herself. Liz dreaded the uncertainty of what was to come. Roswell might not have changed much in her absence accept for a few new restaurants and stores but people had just as Liz had. She wondered what she would find in Roswell. What kind of reaction to her returning home would take place? Her stomach was filled with dread, regret, and anguish as she watched the buildings go by.

Liz had left a lot of baggage in Roswell and just by coming back she felt the weight of it settle on her shoulders. Just by coming back here, she was putting her kids’ lives in danger… but she couldn’t have left them even if she tried and they would have let her. Liz had no doubt her kids would of found a way to get her, so she had bought them against her better judgment. Five minutes later, they were parked out side of the Crash down Café. Liz froze, like a deer caught off guard by an oncoming car. Anguish and dread, so strong, suffocated her. The ache in her heart hurt so badly that she involuntarily rubbed at her chest to make the pain disappear. So many different feelings bombarded her as she stared at the entrance to the Crash down Café: Despair, anxiety, sadness, dread, and fear. The car waited in silence for Liz to make the first move. “Liz...are you okay? Are you going to be ok?” Ava whispered, glancing at the Diner before meeting Liz’s tear filled eyes. “Yeah” Liz replied, taking a shuddering breath before giving Ava and the kids a small reassuring smile. “Let’s go…”

Fifteen Minutes Earlier

“Dad, Dad look let’s go to the Crash Down.” Zan suggested excitedly from beside Max. He glanced toward the Crash Down while driving. “You sure you don’t want to have lunch at Grandma’s? She’s making your favorite, pizza.” Max replied parking. “Yeah, can we go to grandma's house after?” “Okay.” Entering the crowded cafe, Max and Zan spotted Michael holding a one year old Alexandria in their usual booth. “Hey…” Michael greeted, somberly, watching Maria’s every move “Hi Alexa. Hey Uncle Michael, what’s wrong?” “Yeah, what’s wrong?” Max repeated, sensing Michael’s mood matched his own under the pretence.

They all knew that Maria had called Liz last night but as for what was said they didn’t know. “Maria… She’s been up all last night crying. She won’t talk about it and then this morning insisted again that she help Mrs. Parker run the café. I have no complaints except for the fact that she’s eight months pregnant.” Michael grumbled worriedly, rubbing at his five o’clock shadow, while watching Alexa scribbling in her coloring book. Max glanced up to see a Maria wobbling over to another table to collect dishes. Max became irritated and went to go help.

“Go sit down, Max” Maria commanded sensing Max’s presence behind her before he spoke. Max stood baffled before clearing his throat. “Maria, you shouldn’t be doing that…” Maria sighed in annoyance. “I can handle it, plus Michael already tried. So you might as well go have a seat.” Balancing the tray, she turned to see a determined Max Evans. Maria smiled, “Hand over the tray, Maria.” Maria sighed this time in anger at his commanding voice. “Max, if you wanted the role of being the night in shinning armor. You should’ve tried eight years ago when I told you ‘Liz’ was pregnant. As of right about now, auditions are eight years over. So beat it.” Maria grounded out in anger before stomping off into the other direction.

Max stood stunned speechless. ‘What?’ Maria never told him Liz was pregnant. Max had found out four months later by way of letter, Maria’s letter. Max had been helping Michael clean, to Maria insistence, when he had found Liz’s letter addressed to Maria under a stack of Michael’s mail. Against his own better judgment he had pocketed it. An hour later, in the privacy of his own home, Max had found that he wasn’t just a father to one child but two. Max had tried calling everyone who had even a clue to Liz’s whereabouts.

Liz’s aunt in Florida denied her ever being there, to Max’s disbelief, seeing as though that’s where Liz told him she would be staying. Maria wouldn’t even talk to him much less tell him where the hell she was. He had driven himself crazy trying to locate her on his own without Tess finding out. At the time, she was still pregnant with Zan and having a lot of complications. Tess was having false labor here and there. Suddenly one night, a few days after Zan’s birth, Max had had the dream. He dreamt he was holding Zan, and then he was suddenly switched to the scene of that day when he and Liz had made love. The next thing he knew, Max was in a kitchen he didn’t recognize.

His heart clenched upon seeing Liz, a very pregnant Liz pouring juice. Her usually long hair was up in a pony tail. She had on a waitress’s uniform that held tightly around her round belly. He had tried several times to reach out, to move towards her but by then he had realized that it just wasn’t a dream but really happening. Suddenly he watched Liz cried out in pain, dropping the container of juice before clutching her stomach. Max, instantly, cried out Liz’s name as he was no longer in a kitchen but in a bedroom he didn’t recognize.

Turning around, Max came upon the scene of Liz giving birth. He stood there stunned, motionless, as she fell back against the pillows crying. Snapping out of his daze, Max tried violently to move, to move toward Liz. He wanted to hold her so badly, to help her. Liz looked exhausted as she got up enough energy to push one more time. Finally, he watched as Liz was handed a tiny infant. “What’s his name?” He had a son, a baby boy! He realized watching the scene in front of him in amazement. Max finally noticed the blonde. Focused so intently on Liz, He hadn’t noticed her. Gasping, Max was struck at the sight of Tess standing before him. Only it wasn’t Tess. Something was different. Max suddenly was jerked awake by Tess, herself. Calling out Liz’s name in desperation, he cried. Tess watched him in anguish before getting out of bed to walk out of the room. The next day, Max hired an investigator with his last penny saved to find Liz and his son.

Snapping out of his thoughts, Max shook his head making his way back over to his booth. “See I told you not to tell her about Liz. But you insisted. This is your entire fault Maxwell.” Michael pointed accusingly. ‘Yeah, it was his fault’ he thought somberly scooting in beside his son. Zan sensed his dad’s mood but didn’t comment on it. He knew this Liz was a major factor in his parents’ marriage and he hated it, hated her. She made his mom cry and his dad sad. “Calm down, Michael. Don’t stomp on him any more than need be.” Maria sighed, soothing him with a long kiss. “Ewwww, Aunt Maria?” Zan whined while Alexa and Anna giggled. Max had to look away, a blush crawling up his neck as he whistled.

“Move over for mommy, Alexa” Maria commanded replacing her daughter on her husbands lap, sitting sideways. “Hey Uncle Max” Five year old Anna said smiling shyly. “Hey Annabelle, come give me a hug.” Max grinned picking the small brunette for a hug. Both girls looked just like their mother with fiery green eyes and short light brown hair but neither had their parents’ temperament. “Hey Zan…” “Hey…” Zan said smiling sadly. Max glanced at him with worry. Zan was verily sad, shy and quiet but not sad. Annabelle, getting bored on Uncle Max's lap, decided to crawl to the other side of the table to sit next to her sister. “Zan, you ok, buddy?” “Yeah, I’m ok.” Zan answered smiling reassuringly at his father, hiding his thoughts. Max nodded deciding to have a little talk with his son, later.

“So Max…, I talked to Liz last night.” Maria stated watching him intently, waiting to see if he still had any feelings of love inside of that black heart of his. “Oh yeah… what did she say?” Max asked taking a deep breath, shaking inside, his face going blank at Maria’s inspection of his feelings. Maria hid a smile. Max was an open book. He almost did well hiding his feelings this time except for the tension in his broad shoulders and the bob of his Adam’s apple. “Oh nothing really. I just told her that she missed her father’s funeral. She dropped the phone and I talked briefly to one of her new friends. If I know Liz like I think I know her despite eights years, she should be hear by the end of the week.” Maria replied mildly, disguising what she truly felt.

Max sat back wondering what he would do when and if Liz came back? What would he say? What would she say? Max’s shoulders stiffened and his stomach tied in knots at the thought. Not to mention the headache that came on. Max heard the bell, the sound of someone entering but ignored it… until Maria gasped. “Well look at the devil herself…” Michael commented in shock. Max sat there eyes wide with shock as he stared at the one and only Liz Parker.

Chapter Two

Max felt as if he had been struck between the eyes with a sledge hammer. There she was, right before his eyes, Liz Parker. She wasn’t alone either. There was a boy, Zan’s age maybe, dressed in black denim shorts with a red t-shirt. He had long, shaggy brown hair, similar to Max’s, with deep brown eyes similar to his mother’s. He also sported a chip on his shoulders the size of New Mexico. Max gaze flew to the petite girl on Liz’s right. The little girl wore hot pink Capri’s with a sleeveless white top. Her dark brown hair was braided into pigtails that understated her maturity. She was the exact replica of Liz… that is except for her eyes, those were his.

Either he was delusional and Liz had moved on or this little girl was also his. But how? When? There was only that one time. ‘Unless… no. It couldn’t be…twins.’ Max thought desperately as his gaze searched quickly between the girl and boy and then his gaze fell on Liz. If she was beautiful before at sixteen she was stunning now at twenty-six. Motherhood had done her well. Liz was still petite but giving birth to two children had filled her out in all the right places. She was no longer the girl he had known and loved, but a woman, who held all kinds of mysteries and secrets. She was absolutely stunning wearing navy blue Capri’s that hugged tightly against her round hips, and a white corset, that snuggly held breasts. Her dark hair was no longer long but cut elegantly short into spiraling, luxurious curls.

Looking her over, Max could see tell she had been crying and had received little sleep the night before. She was hurting. Max’s gaze then went to the blond haired woman behind Liz. He had been so busy coming to grips with Liz being in the same room and having another child, that he hadn’t noticed her. She looked exactly like Tess, the only difference being she wasn’t. It was her dupe, Max realized with foreboding. What was Liz doing with her? She was trouble just by being who she was, a dupe. Max remembered back to nine years ago when he had last seen her. She had decided to stay in Roswell, not giving him a hint that he was being used and would be dead before the week was up. Max didn’t like this. He didn’t like this at all.

Liz stood frozen in the entrance. Everything had changed but yet…everything was still the same. She spotted Max, Michael, and Maria instantly in the crowded diner. They looked so different... in a good way, that is. Liz didn’t know how much she would miss these people when she left until today. God, it had been eight years, almost a decade. Liz didn’t know whether to cry from happiness or despair. Maria had changed the most. Ripe with pregnancy, she had let her natural hair color, of dark brown, grow back in, cascading luxuriously down her back. She was seated on Michael’s lap next to two little girls that stared at her with avid curiosity.

Michael had changed the least in looks except for his hair being shorter and a five o’clock shadow. Liz’s gaze then fell on the little boy seated beside Max. He was a cute with short dark brown and expressive green eyes. He looked as Max had as a boy but with green eyes…Tess’s eyes. Her gaze then landed on a frowning Max. Eight years, it had been eight years since she had looked into those deep soulful eyes. Liz didn’t know whether to run towards him or away, the other way. He was such a large part of her life, of her. How could she have thought that by leaving, she could’ve stopped loving him? She loved him but she couldn’t trust him. They were strangers now, no longer love sick teenagers, but adults.

She could handle this. She could handle him. He was no longer the boy she had fall in-love with so long ago but a man. A very good-looking man, Liz thought. At twenty-seven, Max Evans was ruggedly masculine. If Liz thought he was handsome before then words couldn’t even describe how Max looked now. He looked as his future self without the gray hair and leather. He was taller. Liz didn’t know how she knew that because he was sitting down but she knew. He was broader through the chest and shoulders, and the sleeves of shirt stretched across his forearms. His hair was long and rugged, curling around his neck making him look wild with a 5’o’clock shadow. The only thing that hadn’t changed about Max was his eyes. They hadn’t changed a bit to Liz’s bad fortune. They were still the same hazel-brown eyes that could suck her in if she wasn’t too careful. “Excuse me, ma’am” A customer said trying to exit. “Oh… I’m sorry” Liz replied stepping out of the exit. Liz looked at her children and Ava, uneasily. “Let’s go say hi guys.”

Everyone at the booth watched in silence as Liz, Ava, and the kids made there way to the booth. Maria was the first to speak. “Well if isn’t Liz Parker… back in Roswell. I never would’ve thought.” Liz smiled sadly at Maria. “Yeah, well me neither. It’s nice to see you, Maria. You look great!” Maria grinned,” Thanks, you too. The last time we spoke you were a month pregnant… that was eight years ago.” Maria replied stonily. Liz looked uneasily at Max as he sat back quietly, his face devoid of any emotion, watching. She shifted nervously before her eyes landed on the two little girls seated on the other side of Michael. “I see you have two of your own and… one on the way.” Liz commented, changing the subject. Maria surprised, beamed proudly. “Oh yeah… Liz this is Annabelle. Annabelle this is one of mommy’s old friends, Liz.” “Hi Liz” the tallest of the two waved. “It’s Aunt Liz to you Anna…” Maria scolded. Liz smiled, “It’s nice to meet you Annabelle.” “And this is my youngest baby, “Alexandria…” Liz’s eyes widened in surprise. “Wow, it’s nice to meet you Alexandria. I like your name.” “Thank you. I’m named after my Uncle Alex.” Alexandria grinned before going back to coloring. Liz looked surprised and smiled sadly before meeting Maria’s eyes. “Your turn…”

“Oh...” Liz laughed a little before smiling proudly at her babies. She turned to Amelia first, who was staring intently at Maria with a warning glint in her eyes, “This is my oldest Amelia. Amelia this is some of mommy’s friends from High school: Maria, Michael, and Max.” Amelia glanced at all of them but her glance fell on Max the longest. “I know who they are, mom. Nice to meet ya” Amelia said giving everyone at the table a chilly smile. Liz frowned before turning to Alex. “And this is my youngest, Alexavier. Alex, this is Maria, Michael and Max...” Alex nodded staring intently at the man who was his father. They stared at each other for moments before his eyes came upon the boy beside him. Alex chucked his head to the boy, “Who’s that?” Liz found her gaze on Max's son. He should've been Liz's. Stop it, Liz.’ She scolded herself. You were blessed with two babies... who love you. So stop it.

Max finally spoke after taking his eyes off of Alex to look at Zan. “This is Alexander 'Zan'. How old are you, Alex?” Staring at his father intently, Alex answered. “Eight. I’ll be nine in January.” Max nodded, silently before turning his intense eyes on to Amelia. “And how old are you, Amelia?” “Nine, me and Alex are twins.” Amelia stated. Liz stood frozen, staring at Max. ‘Oh god, he knows. He knows but he couldn’t know because that meant Maria had told him. But Maria… yes she would. Sh—‘Liz thought. Max, then, turned his gaze to Liz. “I have to be going guys.” Max stood, looking at Liz all the while. Liz backed up as he and Zan walked past. Liz sighed in relief but Max turned around. “Oh Liz… Welcome back.” Liz nodded nervously, “Thanks.” ‘He doesn’t know. If he had known, wouldn’t he have said something? Yes’ She thought. Zan gave Liz one last glare before leaving. ‘Don’t worry Zan. Getting back together with your father would be the last thing on Earth I'd ever do.’ Liz thought before turning towards Maria. “Liz… Lizzie is that you?”

Nancy Parker stood astounded at seeing her little girl standing smack dab in the middle of her Café after nine years. “Lizzie?” Liz smiled, uneasily, not sure what to do. “Hi Mom, surprise…” Tears filled Nancy’s eyes. “Ohmigod, come here!” Nancy cried out, tears over flowing her eyes. Liz beamed proceeding to hug her mother tightly. “Oh my baby’s home. She’s finally home!” Nancy whispered into Liz’s hair. Liz held in a sob as Nancy pushed her away. “Let me look at you, as beautiful as ever. You’re not my little girl anymore are you?” She whispered stroking Liz’s hair. “No.” Liz smiled, looking over her mother as well. Nancy Parker had aged well. Her reddish brown hair was lightly streaked with gray; she had a few laugh lines. There was also a sadness and resignation in her mother’s light green eyes that been both due to her daughters’ absence and her husbands’ death a month ago. It was as if Nancy had suddenly thrown in the towel on life and just gave up. Liz knew that she was partly responsible for that.

“No mom, you’re as beautiful as ever!” Nancy smiled tugging Liz back into another hug. “Welcome home, baby.” “Thank you.” Liz replied before turning to usher Amelia and Alex forward. “Mom…ummm, I want you to meet your grandchildren.” Mouth agape, Nancy stared at the two dark haired children before her. “Mom…I left for a reason. And these two were my reason.” “Lizzie…” Nancy choked out looking from Liz to the children. “Amelia Alex, say hi to your Grandma.” They obeyed each giving their grandmother a hug. Nancy cried hugging them both tightly. “Mom, this is Amelia and this is Alex. They’re twins.” Liz whispered watching her mother’s look of surprise. “Twins…” ‘Uh-huh.” “Oh wow … Lizzie... aren’t you going to introduce me to your friend?”

Liz turned to usher Ava forward as well. “Mom this is Ava. Ava this is my mom, Nancy Parker. I think you both met about eight years ago when Ava visited.” After a moment, recognition crossed Nancy’s face. “Oh, yes I remember. It’s nice to see you again Ava.” Ava nodded, uncomfortable with the family reunion. “You too, Mrs. Parker. I hope you don’t mind me staying…” “Please, if your Lizzie’s friend your welcome here anytime.” Nancy answered giving Ava reassuring smile. “Mom, Ava was the one that helped me all these years. I owe her everything.” Liz smiled, proudly, watching Ava’s discomfort with amusement. “Ok… well let’s go stairs and talk. We have a lot of catching up to do.” Nancy commanded motioning the kids to the door. Liz looked back and saw that Maria, Michael and the kids had also left. Liz smiled sadly, ‘Welcome home, indeed.’

After dropping Zan off at his mothers, Max had walked to the park. Sitting down a nearby bench, Max wondered what the hell was wrong with him. Staring broodingly out into nowhere, he thought about Liz. He had missed her, plain and simple, for the past eight years. Seeing her again had brought everything back. He couldn’t believe he simply walked away but at the same time he knew why. Max was simply overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by seeing Liz again. Overwhelmed that he wasn’t just a father to Zan and Alex but to Amelia as well. He simply didn’t know what to think? What to feel anymore? So many emotions were bombarding him all at once: Anger, at himself at Liz, relief, shock, happiness, dread, awe, and excitement. All these emotion rolled into one.

Why hadn’t she told him? Why had she taken the responsibility of raising his kids all on herself? Didn’t he have a right to know Alex and Amelia? Didn’t he have a right to help her and see to her safety? Didn’t she trust him? ‘Hell no’ Max thought at that last question, shaking his head. She had stop trusting him the day he came to her room eight years ago and Max couldn’t blame her. He could no longer trust himself, either. But that didn’t stop the anger from flowing through his veins nor the awe. Max was in awe of Liz. She had given up her dreams for their children despite the fact that she despised him. If he could take it all back: marrying Tess, causing Liz to leave. He would in a heartbeat but he couldn’t. Max couldn’t just break off his marriage to Tess because he had married her, thinking of his responsibility towards her, not knowing that Liz also needed him as well.

He had made mistakes, a lot of mistakes, and couldn’t change a thing about them. Max guessed that’s what made him human, making mistakes. Now what was he going to do correct those mistakes? Nothing, he could do nothing. Simply because he had made his bed, figuratively speaking, and now he had to sleep in it. The only thing that he could content himself with doing now was getting to know his kids. Max had missed eight years of their lives. He had a lot of catching up to do. But first he would have to wait for Liz openly tells him that Alex and Amelia were his. In order for that to happen Liz would have to come to him because he simply couldn’t go on circumstances. Max couldn’t just blatantly come out of now where after almost a decade and a spring a question on her like that. No he would have to wait. In the meantime, Max would watch from afar.

Later on that Night

After dinner, Nancy and Liz talked, that is really talked while the kids and Ava went down into the Crash Down for dessert. Liz had never really been close to her mother. Somehow, somewhere along the line, she had always been a daddy’s girls. But tonight it had been about them, mother and daughter. They talked about when Liz was growing up, memories. They talked of Liz’s adolescent and teenage years. They laughed and cried over some of her father’s antics and had then discussed Liz’s leaving and what came after in the years to come. Liz left out the alien part, of course. They went through pictures of Liz as a child and compared them to Alex and Amelia’s pictures. They gossiped about Roswell, who was seeing who, who was going where, and who, supposedly, saw an alien. Basically they just talked. Liz asked about her father’s death and Nancy answered: A heart attack. One moment, he was up and about. The next, he had collapsed. Nancy wept as she told Liz this. Afterwards at about ten ten-thirty, Liz got the kids ready for bed. Amelia and Ava shared Liz’s bed while Alex slept on the floor in a sleeping bag. After putting the kids to sleep next to Ava’s comatose body, Liz went in to see that her mother was in bed, already sound asleep. Liz smiled before making her way downstairs. Walking into the Café, Liz was surprised to see Maria was still there.

“Hey…” Liz said smiling as she watched Maria wipe down the tables. Jerked out of her thoughts, Maria looked up to see Liz. “I thought you had left, already.” Liz commented sitting on a stool. “Nope, I was just on a break. So…how was your talk with your mom?” Maria asked, making coffee. “Fine, actually. Better than I expected.” Liz sighed. “That’s good. She really missed, you know. We all did.” Maria smiled in sadness. “You did?” “Yup, why didn’t you call, Liz? We were worried something had happen to you.” Liz looked down, biting the side of her lip. Could she tell Maria this? Could she trust her? Liz, obviously, didn’t know anymore but she went against her instincts and decided to tell her anyway. “There were a lot of reasons I couldn’t call and now I realize they’re just excuses. There were the twins and trying to get my life together and then it was the thought of someone finding out where I was.”

Maria came around the counter and sat down on a stool beside Liz. “Ok, I get the first part, maybe, but the seconds a little confusing. What was the big secret about where you were? Why couldn’t we know? Why did you leave? God, I would’ve been there for you any way I could.” Maria whispered, tears feeling her eyes. “I know you would have Maria. But there was Amelia and Alex to think of. They would’ve been in danger actually they still are.” Maria looked up in surprise, “What? What kind of danger?” Liz shrugged, “I don’t know. All I know is that before left I was having these dreams about Alex, premonitions. I dreamt that I came back and we: you, Max, Michael, Isabel, Ava, were all here after closing time when Alex was kidnapped. I would run out in the street and see a gray van driving away; all the while I would hear Alex screaming for me. I kind of got the feeling after the dream that it was alien related, not to mention the fact that I was changing. I didn’t know what to do. Afterward, I had every intention of calling you but then I had Alex and Amelia. And I thought maybe then was a good time to distance myself from Roswell, from you guys. By that time three months had past and I wasn’t sure…”

Maria burst out laughing and crying, interrupting Liz. “God Liz… I understand. I’m a bit hurt but I understand .I was so angry at you for the longest.” Maria responded taking Liz’s hand. “But as angry as I am I don’t want to lose you again. I missed you, so much Lizzie. I wanted so badly for you to be at my wedding, to be there when the girls born. I wanted to be an Aunt to Amelia and Alex, to spoil them but as I can see someone already took my place…” Liz sighed, holding back her tears. “No one’s taken your place Maria. You will always be my sister and their Aunt. They just have two Aunts now. Don’t ever think that just because Ava is apart of my life that your not. Because you will always be my best friend but …Ava’s also my best friend as well. So don’t be mad at me, Maria, for loving you both. “Maria nodded in understanding before laughing before pulling Liz into a hug. “I’m so happy your home Lizzie.” Sitting back, Maria and Liz smiled before hopping off the seat, startling Liz. “Maria…” “I’ll be right back…” Maria called running into the back. A few seconds later, she came back with two pints of ice cream, strawberry and vanilla. “They're not our guys but they’ll have to do. Now spill, girlfriend.” Liz laughed softly, “What do you wanna know?” “Everything” So Liz told her exactly that, everything.

The Next Morning:

“Brush you teeth good, you guys.” Liz called as she made up her old bed. Ava was in the kitchen fixing breakfast. Finishing up her bed, she went into her mother’s room to see her on the phone. So Liz just made herself comfortable on the bed. “Thanks, Maria.” Liz looked up startled at her mother. “Who was that?” “Maria, she’ll be coming in about fifteen minutes.” “Mom, why is she coming in?” “To waitress, of course.” “Mom, call her back. I’ll waitress today.” “But… are you sure, Lizzie? I thought maybe you’d wanna go see some friends, get familiar with Roswell again.” Nancy suggested stroking her daughter’s curls. “Mom it’s okay. I’ll do it. Maria’s eight months pregnant. Plus I know Roswell like the back of my hand. Hurry mom and call her back before she leaves.” Liz called, leaving the room.

In the kitchen, Ava, Alex, and Amelia sat eating waffles and orange juice. Kissing both Amelia and Alex on the forehead, Liz sat across from Ava. “So what’s on the schedule for today?” “Aunt Ava’s taking me to the mall” Amelia said adding sugar to her orange juice. “And you, Alex?” “I’m going to the arcade.” Alex mumbled with a mouth full of a chewed up waffle. Liz grimaced, “Alex, swallow before you talk again, please.” Alex nodded in understanding, grinning in amusement. “You’re not going alone, are you?” Alex shook his head, “No mom, the arcade is in the mall.” “Oh, how did you know that?” Shrugging, “I read it in the tourist guide.” “Ok, well I’ll be helping your Grandma out in the Cafe.” “Really? Are you are going to wear those weird alien costumes and say may I take your order?” Amelia giggled. “Yes…is something wrong with that?” Liz smiled. “No, it’s just that I wouldn’t be seen dead wearing something so…weird.” Amelia stated. Ava sputtered on her orange juice laughing. Alex rolled his eyes. Liz shook her head, smiling. “Mom are you sure you can fit into it because I saw them and they look kinda small?” Amelia squinted in curiosity. Liz mumbled in indignation. “Yes, I can fit into the uniform. Thank you very much, I only gained what? Ten pounds in the last eight years.”

Downstairs in the bathroom, Liz tried to pull her skirt up over hips. “C’mon C’mon C’mon” Liz chanted, squeezing her thighs and hips into the tight fabric. Finally heaving a sigh of relief, Liz sucked in her baby fat to button the uniform. Fifteen-minutes later, she was a waitress again after five years. Liz was serving a table when she heard the bell over the door rang signaling someone entering. Looking up, Liz gasped almost spilling the plate of food onto the customer’s lap again. Settling the plate down, carefully, Liz turned around. “Kevin?” “Hey Liz. I’d thought I’d come down and visit you?” Liz was stood stunned as he hugged and kissed her. “How did you know I was here?” “Oh I asked around. I found out your father died and that you were going home. Then I remember you telling me about a certain alien town and here I am” Kevin said grinning, his green eyes twinkling. Liz laughed a bit uneasy. Pushing the uneasiness away she took his arm, “Well then I’m glad you’re here. You can have a seat if you want. I won’t be on break for another three hours.” “No that’s ok. I think I’ll go have a look around Roswell, buy some alien souvenirs.” Kevin smiled giving her a quick kiss. Liz smiled,” Ok, suit your self.” “I’ll be back.” Liz just smiled until he left. ‘What was he doing here?’

Chapter 3
Fifteen Minutes Outside of Roswell, New Mexico

“I want the Heir, Tess. We had a bargain.” Kivar pointed, pacing the confines of the abandoned warehouse. “I know… every things going as planned just stick to your half.” Tess stated, boldly, filing her nails. She didn’t notice Kivar move until he was tilting her chin up. “And what… exactly is my half again Tess? You know if I wanted to I could break your pretty little neck right now without breaking a sweat and absolutely no one would miss you , not even your precious King.” He smiled seeing the fear in her eyes, reveling in it. Tess shook him away, angrily, tears filing her eyes. “You’re wrong?” Kivar’s eyes widened in amusement. “Oh am I? So... how is your spineless leader, anyway?” Tess remained silent, tears falling down her cheeks.

Kivar ignored her tears, grinning to himself as the memory of the last time he killed that self-righteous bastard occurred. “Oh… I can’t wait for the day when I kill him, again. It will be glorious!” His voice boomed through out the rooms. “Kivar… I want to ask another favor.” “What is it little sis? Anything your heart desires.” Tess stared at him for a moment. She verily saw his nice side if it wasn’t for some gain. “I want you to let Max live. You’ll have Isabel and the crowned heir. Let me have him…” Her eyes pleaded in desperation. “But you don’t have him. And what makes you think that Max isn’t going to come after Vilandra and Zan, not to mention his Crown if I let him live. No I refuse. He’s too much of liability. He has to die.” “Kivar please, let me have him. I love him.” Tess pleaded, grabbing his arm before he moved to leave.

Kivar looked down with disdain before shaking her loose. “Stop your whimpering, Tess.” Kivar snapped before sighing. “Ok, I will let you have Max. But remember this well, Tess that if this plan fails at all. It will be your head I carry back to Antar.” Kivar grinned, almost skipping towards the door. Tess stood frozen, terrified of what was to come. “Your hands will be full this week, sister, but remember you’ll not only have Max but your life at the end of it, so be happy.” Tess was shaking by the time she climbed into her jeep. She was so scared, so scared. If this failed, then, she stood to lose everything, including her life. ‘Everything will be okay.’ She told herself. ‘After...she killed Liz. She just had to kill Liz. How easy was that? But first she would have to suffer.’ Tess smiled, ‘Yes, everything would be fine.’

A few hours later

“Kevin’s here.” Liz stated plopping down across from Ava in a booth during her break. The kids were in the back watching cartoons. Ava looked up startled, choking off of a piece of blueberry pie, “What? Kevin as in the King of Cornballs attorney? That Kevin.” Liz giggled, “Yes and he is not a cornball…just sweet.” “Sweet, Liz? That guy is sweet enough to give me a cavity. I don’t know why you go out with that dude? He is such a wimp yo. How did he even know where you were, anyway?” Liz shook her head, taking a piece of Ava pie. “Aye…” Liz stuck out her tongue as Ava’s glared at her.

“He said he did some looking around. He probably spoke to Cathy. She was the only who would know since she’s collecting the mail.” “Some looking around huh? What’s that suppose to mean? Not only is he spineless and sweet but a stalker as well. What a combo, Lizzie.” Ava laughed, shaking her head. Liz rolled her eyes. “Shut up, I don’t see why you and Alex don’t like him, Amelia does.” Ava shook her head, “Please, buy that girl anything and you got a best friend for life. And Alex, he wants a father not someone even ‘he’ can make cry.” “Hey, that was only one time and Alex kicked him in the balls, so there.” Liz explained in defense. “Yeah I would’ve too in Alex’s position. The guy is just a plain weird.”

After work, Liz and Ava took the kids to the play ground. “Mom push me, please” Amelia called, feebly, trying to swing herself. “You are so weak…” Alex called swinging high. “Be quiet, doofus.” “I’m coming Amelia. Leave your sister alone, Alex.” Liz commanded before pushing Amelia on the swing. “Higher, mom, higher.” Amelia screamed in delight as Liz used her powers to move the swing faster. “Liz grinned as Amelia laughed. “Mom, how about me?” “I think you’re going fast enough, Alex.” Liz replied, plopping down beside a bored Ava. Suddenly she sat up straighter, her eyes alight with mischief.

“I’ll race you, Liz?” “What?” “You heard me, I’ll race you.” “No…” “C’mon Liz, I’m bored. Stop being a chicken.” Ava mocked. “I am not a chicken, thank you very much. Where and how much?” Ava nodded, triumph. “Across the field down to that last tree.” “How much?” “Ten” “Fifteen” “Deal…” Liz took off her sandals. Ava tightened her laces. “Ok, get ready. Stop cheating, Ava. Set. Go.” Liz sprinted leaving Ava sputtering in indignation. Breathing, Liz ran as fast as she could with Ava right behind her. Crossing the hill, Liz was the one to collapse on the tree first. Ava collided into her, both hitting the ground laughing. Finally catching their breath, Liz held out her hand. “Pay up, loser” “Ohhh, I hate you.” Ava laughed smacking a ten and five in Liz’s hand. Back at the swings, Alex held out his hand. “Pay up…” Amelia grumbled pulling out two dollars of her allowance.

That evening instead of Nancy cooking, Liz decided to take everyone out to dinner at the new restaurant just on the edge of town called, ‘The Mexican Border’. Entering the restaurant, they waited for a table. 'The Mexican Border' was crowded full of families, friends, couples, and business executives. They didn’t have to wait long but was seated immediately in the middle of the dining room around a six-seat table. They didn’t notice Max, Tess, and Zan across the distance but Max noticed them. Upon arriving, they had eaten in complete silence. Max wasn’t the only who noticed the tension, Zan had too. Tonight, Tess had been tense. He had tried to make conversation but it seemed as if Tess was in another world, even Zan tried to his frustration.

There just wasn’t any use talking to her tonight so Max had given up. They were supposed to be celebrating his raise but they sat in tense silence trying to figure if they should say anything or nothing at all. And then, Max had spotted Liz and the kids. They had looked so happy. Their table was filled with chatter and giggles that made Max crave to join. But he knew he wouldn’t be welcome and would probably ruin their appetites on sight. So he stayed seated watching from afar. Max watched as Liz laughed at something Alex said. He watched as Amelia stuck her tongue out at Alex before saying something to Mrs. Parker. He just watched. Max’s gaze was full of intense yearning. Zan wasn’t the only one who noticed his dad’s distraction. Tess noticed, also. Her green eyes followed his across the room to Liz’s table and she wanted to scream in anger and jealousy. Didn’t he see she needed him now? But that b—was all he could ever think of. All he could ever care about. Thankfully that would change soon and Max would never have think of Liz Parker again.

Liz felt someone’s gaze and turned around to collide with Max Evans intense hazel-brown eyes. She turned around quickly, not noticing Tess or Zan’s glare, as well. Damn, just when she thought she would have a peaceful night out with her family. Wasn’t it just a coincidence that Max Evans happened to be in the same restaurant at the same time they were? Now, she couldn’t even eat a bite, her appetite was ruined. But she tried for the kids’ sake to eat and have a good time. She tried very hard to block out Max because she knew that at any moment now that either Amelia or Alex would sense her discomfort and their night would be ruined. So, she tried making conversation and it worked. “Guess what guys?” Everyone turned their gazes toward to her, then.

“We were invited to Aunt Maria’s barbeque this weekend.” “Awww mom… do we have to go?” Alex groaned. “Well, why not Alex? We have nothing else do and maybe you might have fun.” “I don’t like those people!” Amelia frowned, picking through her food. Liz frowned as well. “Why not Amelia, you haven’t even gotten to know them yet?” Amelia lips puckered and tears filled her eyes. “They were mean to you. They just stared at us as if we were some walking talking boogies.” “Aww honey, I’m sure that’s not true…” Nancy commented rubbing her back. “They weren’t mean to me, honey. There’s a lot things that mommy hasn’t told you yet and until I tell you… you can’t past judgment simply on what you saw. They’re good people and we were invited. So we’re going.” Liz stated firmly, feeling a headache come on as Amelia burst into tears. Liz didn’t notice Max, Tess, and Zan walk out a few minutes later, arguing. She was too caught up in her own drama.

That night, Tess watched Max from the doorway. He was lying on his stomach, his face buried in a pillow as he snored softly. She had loved him for the longest, even before she met him. Upon arriving and watching him with Liz, Tess knew that that love wouldn’t be returned. Why couldn’t he love her that way, even a little a bit? She knew he cared about her and probably loved her as a friend… but that simply wasn’t enough. Tess wanted all of his love and devotion and she couldn’t have that if Liz was still breathing. She had only mind warped Max since their marriage maybe once or twice simply because she had learned her lesson from Alex. Plus she didn’t want Max’s love for her to be produced out of a mind warp. She wanted his love to be pure without any powers involved.

The first time she had mind warped him was the day Liz left. Tess had been so desperate for him to forget about her. That she had made it seem as though Liz had come to him personally to say goodbye. She had made Liz out to be cold in her farewell, making it seem as though he was more of a pest than anything else. Liz told him that she was moving on and he should move, too. Max had been miserable for a while after that. He had become more and more distant towards Tess. As if something wasn’t right but he didn’t know what. Then it was that time six months ago, when she had been on the phone with Kivar and he had picked up the other line and heard the conversation. Max had livid with anger, out of control. Tess had been scared but with a little mind warp the problem had been solved. She had never meant to hurt him. She had just wanted him to forget for the sake of their future and hopefully there would be a future once Tess got Liz out of the way.

Chapter 4
Saturday Afternoon

“1069, 1071, 1073, ok here we go.” Liz muttered as the kids sulked in the backseat. Parking, Liz turned to Ava and smiled. “I still don’t know why I had to come, yo. I don’t even know these people.” “You’re family. You’re coming. Plus I need you here for support.” Liz teased, examining the small, two story brick home with a porch and deck. This was Liz’s first time being at Maria’s house and she loved it. Walking onto the porch, she knocked on the screen door. There were screams of delight in the yard so Liz entered took it upon herself to enter. The house was silent and very homey. “Maria?” Liz called out but was yet again answered with laughter from the backyard. Walking through the dinning room and kitchen onto the deck, Liz was awed by the size of the yard. It was enough room to fit a deck and some more. Liz was impressed.

Stepping through the screen door, Liz was greeted with silence from the table’s occupants: Isabel, Tess, and a Hispanic man, Liz didn’t recognize. “See… I told you they would stare at us.” Amelia screeched. Isabel was the first to speak, coming around to give Liz a warm hug. “Liz.... wow welcome home.” Liz smiled, surprised at Isabel's happiness to see her. “Thanks Isabel. It’s nice to see you again.” “You too, you look great.” Isabel responded looking her over. Isabel looked great herself, but she always had. So, Liz wasn’t surprised.

“Come and sit down…” Liz looked back to Ava, Alex, and Amelia and made introductions. “Oh… excuse me. You guys remember Ava?” Isabel lost her smile upon seeing Ava but quickly regained it. “Hi, it's nice to see again.” “You too” Ava answered smiling uneasily. Tess stared in disdain at Liz, Ava, and the kids under her sunglasses. Liz met Tess’s gaze. “Nice to see you again, Tess.” Liz was determined not let this women unsettle her. She was going to be nice, even if it killed her. “I wish I could say the same. Welcome home, Liz.” Tess muttered, going back to her magazine. “Oh Liz… this is my husband Jesse. Jesse this is Liz. We went to high school together.” Jesse stood, grasping Liz’s hand “Oh yeah? Nice to meet you, Liz.” Liz had to suck in a breath at a close inspection of his face. The man was gorgeous. “Nice to meet you, too.” Liz smiled. Then she turned back to Alex and Amelia. “These are my babies, Alex and Amelia. You, guys, this is Mr. Evans sister Isabel and her husband Jesse. Say hi.” Obeying their mother, Alex and Amelia stood awkwardly before going to sit on the deck’s steps. Isabel gasped, inwardly, at the resemblance between Alex and Max. 'It could be... couldn’t it... but how?' Shaking her thoughts away, Isabel grabbed Liz's hand. “So Liz… Ava come have a seat.”

At the grill, Max, Maria, and Michael argued. “I so told you tell him not to bring her, Michael!” “You sure, because I don’t remember” Michael answered flipping a hamburger. “Yes, Michael. I told you on Thursday during the game, remember?” “See Maria, that’s why I don’t remember, the game was on.” Michael answered, fighting a smile. She threw her hands up in frustration. “Maria, I couldn’t have just told her not to come.” Max interrupted, drinking a cherry coke. “Yes, you could have.” “Maria, you invite one of us you invite all of us. So get use to it.” Michael demanded. “Ohhh, I hate you.” “Sweetheart that wasn’t what you said last night.” Michael laughed as Maria stormed off. Max shook his head. “Liz is here?” “Huh? What? Where?” “Calm down Maxwell, over there sitting by the wifey.” Max spotted Liz immediately. She was laughing at something Maria said. Her smile was as radiant as ever and her soft wavy hair blew with the wind. Max's gaze, then, fell to the kids sitting on the steps. They were both frowning and muttering to each other. It made him angry as hell to know that he had missed eight years of their life. Moments later, he watched Liz and Maria made their way to the grill.

Back at the table
A few minutes earlier

Well away from ears, Liz and Maria talked quietly to each other. “So out of all the things we’ve talked about in the last few days, we haven’t talked about Max.” Maria teased watching Max watch Liz. “Maria don’t…” “Don’t what? He still loves you, you know?” Liz shook her head, her features sober. “I doubt it…” Maria looked at her in disbelief. “Really…that’s the same thing you implied that ‘day’ so long ago at sixteen when you were shot. Are you as sure now as you were then?” Liz turned to stare at her kids. “I’m doubly sure. He’s happily married to Tess. He’s moved on…” Maria burst out in laughter as Liz frowned.

“Liz, girlfriend, open your eyes. Max might be married but he isn’t happy. Matter of fact, he hasn’t been happy for a very long time. The only reason he’s been Tess for so long is Zan, otherwise he would’ve been in Clovis right now, hunting you down. You know and I know I can’t stand the air Max breathes but I can’t deny one thing: that guy has never stopped loving you, Lizzie. Just look at the way he’s looking at you right now. It’s just like before. Before Tess. He hasn’t taken his eyes off you since you arrived. Now what does that say about his so called marriage?” Liz sighed, “I’m not getting you, Maria. What are you trying to say?” “Nothing just that the guy cares even if he does have an idiotic way of showing it. I don’t know, Liz. Maybe you should just tell him.” “No” “If not for your sake or his sake then for Amelia and Alex. I mean don’t you think it’s kind of unfair to them not to have a father?”

“Yes, Maria. I’ve thought of that but …if Max knows than there’s the possibility that everyone would know. I can’t take the risk that by telling Max my kids’ lives might be in danger.” Maria nodded in understanding. “Ok all I’m saying, Liz, is that no one’s blind here. Alex is Max’s twin in the looks department. He looks more like Max than Zan does. You can only hide the truth for so long until it comes and bites you the butt.” Maria stood watching Max and Michael at the grill. “I’ll tell him…” “Ok… it’s just a matter of time before someone else does.” Liz gave Maria a warning glare. “Don’t push me, Maria. ‘When’ I tell him is my problem not yours.” Maria smiled holding up her hands in defense, “Ok ok, no need to bite my head off.” Liz laughed at Maria’s expression. “C’mon let’s go say hi to our men…” Maria said taking Liz’s arm. “He’s not ‘my man’, Maria.”

A Few Minutes Later:

Walking up behind Michael, Maria startled him by wrapping her arms around his waist. “Hey…” “Hey, I see you’re not angry anymore.” Michael commented, looking over his shoulders into Maria’s mischievous green eyes. Max and Liz stood in an uncomfortable silence, staring at one another. Max was the first one who spoke, “So… having a good time?” Liz smiled sadly, “Yeah… it’s nice to be home.” Maria watched Max and Liz for a few seconds before whispering into Michael’s ear, “Wanna go somewhere, Space boy?” Michael looked up startled as Maria’s hand started to travel south. Grabbing her hand quickly, Michael looked up to see Max and Liz were doing their 'look into my eyes' soul mate thing.

“Maxwell, watch the grill for a sec.” Max nodded in answer as Michael walked away. Leaning against a tree, he turned his attention back to Liz. She tensed as she watched Maria and Michael walk away. “So… Liz what do you do? What’s your life like in Clovis?” Max asked, trying to break the silence. His tongue was tied in knots at the thought of speaking to Liz after all these years. Liz smiled, watching Isabel and Ava talk, “ Its ok I guess. Never the problem of boredom with two kids… I teach now, though…” Max looked surprise, “Really? Wow.” Liz nodded staring at him out of the corner of her eyes. Maria was right, he was watching her just as he use too. But that doesn't change anything. “So what do you teach?” “Science... third grade science.” Liz answered uneasily before watching looking up to meet Max’s frown. “What…” Liz asked with puzzlement as she found Max’s gaze on the kids. Meeting her eyes, he gave her a reassuring smile. “Hold on a sec…Zan?”

He whistled getting his son’s attention. Zan ran over, frowning at Liz in the process. “Yeah dad…” Leaning down, Max whispered something into his ear making his frown turn darker. Zan nodded, obeying, before running off. “What did you say to him, not that it’s any of my business.” Max smiled, “Just watch…” Liz turned and did exactly that. Zan ran over to all the kids before speaking in hushed tones, and then they followed him over to Amelia and Alex. Liz frowned, watching the interaction then suddenly smiled as she watched Alex nodding. Standing up, he took Amelia’s reluctant hand before dragging her along behind the crowd of kids. “What were they doing?” “Inviting Amelia and Alex to play… Zan is kind of shy like his father. So I had to push him into the right direction.” Max said before flipping another hamburger. Liz nodded smiling,” Thanks Max.”

Max nodded, “No need for thanks. They were being left out.” “So… Max, what do you do?” “I went into family law, like my father…” “Really? That’s great.” “Yeah thanks. Before Zan was born my dad and I weren’t on good terms. We weren’t on speaking terms period, actually, but then Zan came. After that, dad sort of gravitated toward Zan and in conclusion forgiving me. I started going to Roswell’s Community College with Isabel and Michael when I decided to go into law. I now run dad’s firm.” Liz laughed softly, “Wow I’m impressed. What do Michael and Isabel do?” Watching the kids, Max smiled slightly. “Michael is famous for his art…he runs his own Art gallery downtown. Isabel is also a teacher. She teaches first graders and appears to love it.” “Isabel as a teacher, I never would’ve of imagined.” Max grinned, watching Liz. “Me either but Isabel has always had that protective motherly instinct ingrained in her so…”

Interrupting, Tess smiled a condescending smile at Liz before addressing Max. “I’m leaving. Don’t bring Zan home too late. Ok…” Max frowned, “Sure…” Tess nodded, trying to give Max a kiss on the lips... but she missed by a few inches when Max turned his head. Liz, instead of turning her head like a wimp, examined their behavior. Max had deflected that kiss… purposely. His big body also looked tense with anger. Hmmm maybe Maria was right after all. Maybe Max and Tess's marriage wasn’t so perfect after all. Yeah, like that would make a difference? “See you later. By Liz…” Tess called, walking away. ‘Hmmmm’ Liz thought before her thoughts were interrupted by Max. “Listen Liz… I don’t see why we can’t be friends?” Mouth agape, a little taken aback, Liz frowned. “I don’t see why not either Max but… we have a past that destroyed any remnants of a future!” “Even as friends? Listen… I don’t want it to be anything more than that…” ‘Liar…’ his thoughts screamed. Yes, he wanted more but it simply couldn’t be, so he would take what he could get. “I just want to be friends if that’s ok.” Liz remained silent for a few moments, watching the kids run around. Could they be friends? Could they be friends without wanting more from each other? Liz didn’t know but in the same token… she couldn’t say 'no'. Liz smiled making her decision then before turning toward a nervous Max. “Yeah… it would be okay.”

Max watched, yearningly, as Liz ran across the yard dodging the ball. Maria and Ava used Liz as a shield as they tried not to get hit and trip over the children at the same time. Alex and Zan grinned, evilly, as the women and children tried to run. Max sighed in content, “Maxwell, quit it. You’re driving me insane….” Max looked at Michael from across the table, quizzically. “What?” “That tapping, that insistent tapping, Maxwell that’s what?” “Oh… I thought Maria would’ve at least put you in good during your disappearing act.” Michael glared at Max before getting back to the entertainment of watching the women squeal. Max went back to watching as well. His fingers went unknowing back to tapping the glass table. “Maxwell, damn, you’re driving me nuts…” Michael stood in a temper before stomping off towards the game. Max shrugged before concentrating his eyes back on Liz. She was driving him crazy: her radiant smile, her giggles and laughter, her sparkling brown eyes. All of this was making Max feel things again that he thought were long ago gone. He watched her broodingly as she dodged the ball with skill. “Hey Max … Who is it this time?” Max turned, watching Kyle walked out onto the deck. “Hey…what?” Kyle grinned, “Who’s the lucky girl who you can’t take your eye off? It can’t be Tess, seeing as though I just saw her on my way here… Liz…Liz?” Kyle cried out, stunned upon spotting who the lucky girl was, sprinting off the deck’s steps. “Liz?”

Liz jerked to a stop, frozen in place by the voice. “Liz, is that you?” Kyle called from behind her. She turned, stunned before crying out in joy, throwing herself into his arms. “Kyle…ohmigod” Kyle stood still before wrapping his arms around her, “Lizzie is this really you…” As if doubting he was really holding her in his arms. “Yes Kyle, it’s really me.” Liz whispered with tears in her eyes, as everyone stood around with silence while watching the scene. “Oh buddha…” Kyle sobbed, hugging her tighter. Liz pushed him away, wiping away her tears. “Let me see you…damn you look good.” Laughing, Liz took him in. If Kyle was cute back in High school then he was a knock out now. He was taller now, broader in the shoulders. His hair was cut short and he had on cop’s uniform. “Talk about looks, Lizzie. You look damn fine yourself.” Kyle grinned, pulling her back into a hug. She breathed him in and met Max’s eyes across the distance.

Pushing him back again, Liz grinned before calling the kids over. “Kyle these are my babies, Amelia and Alex. You guys, this is one of my friends from school, Uncle Kyle.” Liz introduced. Kyle’s eyes widened in surprise at Alex and Amelia before meeting Liz’s eyes again. Her eyes confirmed his suspicions. “Oh yeah Kyle… I want you to meet someone, else. C’mere, Ava...” Liz beckoned with a smile. Kyle sucked in his breath upon spotting Ava. She looked exactly like Tess. The only difference being he didn’t feel the least bit brotherly towards her. Kyle in his inspection of Ava found her to be very attractive compared to the women he had dated. It was just something about her. “Hi…” Ava greeted a bit shyly. “Hey… wow. So your Tess’s dupe. “Both Ava and Liz lost their smiles then. Ava stared him up and down with a frown. Before taking a step back, “Duke, I’m ‘nobodies’ dupe.” “Okay…” Maria called, stepping in front of Kyle and Ava. “Let’s get back to the game. Kyle, unless you feel like joining in, why don’t you go sit down by Max.” Kyle nodded, receiving a kiss on the cheek from Liz without breaking eye contact with Ava. Turning around, Kyle grinned. He had just found his better half.

Liz threw the ball aiming to hit Amelia when Maria called from the kitchen, “You have a visitor, Liz.” Liz looked up startled, “What?” At that exact moment, Kevin stepped onto the deck, looking out of place in a business suit. Damn, she thought. Jogging up to the deck, “Hey…” Liz greeted, staring briefly into Max’s intense hazel brown eyes before meeting Kevin’s dark green eyes. “Hey… Your mother gave me the address. I hope you don’t mind…” Kevin explained wrapping his arm around Liz’s waist before kissing her long and tenderly. Max watched the scene with blankly, his hands balled into fists. He knew he had no right to be jealous but he had always thought of Liz as being his, whether they were together or not.

Kyle watched both Max and Liz with amusement. Across the yard, Alex kicked the ball in a temper of his own, his gaze as fierce as Max’s. Ava looked sickened and Maria looked downright shocked. Except for Amelia evident happiness, Michael looked bored. The guy was evidently staking his claim, Michael thought. Liz pulled back in shock. “Ummm no… no I don’t mind at all. Wow…” Kevin grinned sheepishly before noticing that they did not go unnoticed. “So… Liz aren’t you going to introduce me to your friends.” Liz smiled, unsure, “Ummm sure, everyone this is Kevin. Kevin: this is Maria and her little girls Annabelle and Alexa. You already know Ava and my kids. There’s Zan. That’s Michael over there beside the grill. Behind you are Kyle and Max.” Liz smiled. “Wow… It’s nice to meet you all” Kevin grinned at the answering silence.

Max tossed and turned that night, his dreams turbulent. He was dreaming of Liz. He dreamt that instead of marrying Tess, he had married Liz. They were happy. Max dreams then changed dramatically: ‘He entered his tent. There were candles burning on the small amount of furniture left in the tent. The Antarian breeze blew lightly outside betraying Zan’s emotions as he stood waiting. This was the night. The night Latanya would finally be his. Sitting down in a dark corner, he waited. Finally, the flaps to the tent brushed open allowing her entrance. She searched the tent with her eyes, smiling in happiness before stripping herself of her gown. Zan watched her with a burning desire. Latanya De Christoff was absolutely beautiful in her honeymoon attire. As if sensing his presence, she met him with a seductive smile. “Zan…” She whispered, trying unsuccessfully to hold in her giggles, watching as him as he stepped from the shadows. She watched him, with wonder and love sparkling from her deep brown eyes. He advanced on her quickly, lifting her to her meet his hungry kiss while her slender legs encircled around his waist. Latanya yelped in surprise before sighing into his delicious mouth. Zan growled his pleasure before laying her upon his pallet.

Max sighed in his sleep, mumbling. Still dreaming: ‘Zan and his men walked into the court yard with relief. He was home, finally home. He looked up to see Latanya was still up. Candles lightened their window. Zan smiled. At that moment, Latanya appeared in the window, serenely. She smiled sadly down upon him before lifting her hands to the glass. Zan frowned, sensing something was wrong. He continued to watch as Latanya held her stomach in pain before being shoved through the glass. Zan roared in pain as he watched his wife fall. He desperately ran to catch her fall but he was a distance to late.

Zan lifted her limp body into his arms and sobbed her name. Running his hands over blood stained gown, he tried to heal her repeatedly but it was too late. He wept into her hair. What had he done? What had he done? Moving his gaze up to Latanya’s window, he howled in rage at the figure standing in the window, smiling sinisterly. “Mark my words, Ava. You will pay with every dying breath you take. You Mark My Words.” Zan looked upon Latanya’s broken body and wept. “Oh, Latanya. I’m so sorry. So sorry.” He sobbed as his men brought Ava’s shackled body into the open. Zan went in for the kill.’ Max awakened the next morning with no memory of the dream from the night before… except for a single name that would haunt his thoughts for days to come. ‘Latanya’

Chapter 5
A Few Days Later

“Mom, do we have to go to bed?” Amelia moaned as Liz tucked her into bed, “Yes, ten twenty-eight is as good as any time to be in bed.” Liz whispered, as her son snored. Amelia frowned, she hated going to bed. She was missing all of the fun. “You had a busy day, Amelia. You hung out with your Aunt Maria. You went to the movies. You helped mommy in the cafe and now… it’s time to sleep.” Liz sighed kissing her daughter on the cheek. “Okay… but first can you read me a story?” Amelia asked pleadingly. Liz nodded, “What do you want to read?” “A fairytale.” Liz laughed softly at Amelia excitement. “What kind of Fairytale? Cinderella? Beauty and the Beast?” She frowned shaking her head. “No, those are for babies. Make up one, mom” “Ok… but t it’s going to have to be short. I have to finish cleaning up downstairs.” Amelia nodded her agreement, waiting in anticipation. “Ok once upon a time…”

Liz smiled as her daughter slept. She had conked out not five minutes after Liz had started the story. She shook her head before checking on her son. Alex was lying on his stomach, snoring quietly. His thick shaggy brown hair in disarray. Liz had never felt love this intense before not even with Max. Okay… maybe with Max. But that was a different kind of love, spurned on by hormones. The love she felt for Max didn’t even compare to the way she felt about her children. It not only scared her but awed her speechless. Watching from the doorway, Liz tried to imagine how she would feel if anything happened to Amelia or Alex. She couldn’t… as much as she tried she couldn’t think of the thought of her kids getting hurt.

Determined, Liz stalked over to the window, sealing it shut with her powers. Leaving the door open, she made her way downstairs to find everyone was still there. Max, Michael, Isabel, Tess sat in one booth while Maria, and Kyle sat at another booth. Maria had mentioned that all of the kids were over at Sheriff Valenti and Amy’s house. She had invited Alex and Amelia but Liz had refused. She wanted to be near her babies incase anything went wrong. Liz knew she couldn’t stand guard over Amelia and Alex for the rest of their stay in Roswell. Which would probably be indefinitely? She just had this bad feeling that something was going to happen soon and she could do nothing to stop it. At that moment, Ava entered, carrying her stereo.

Liz smiled, “What’s for that for?” Ava lifted the stereo with a grin. “I was thinking that since we couldn’t go out clubbing, tonight. That the club would just have to come to us.” Liz glanced over at the aliens, briefly. She could see it in their eyes that they were still suspicious of Ava. Not so much Isabel and Maria but everyone else. They were naturally weary of her and this made Liz smile in amusement. She couldn’t be angry with them because she had been weary of Ava herself not so long ago. “C’mon Liz whaddaya say…” “It might wake up the kids.” Liz commented, teasingly. “Liz, please, a parade couldn't wake those kids up.” Ava laughed, putting on a CD.

“Oh… all right. But I don’t I have the correct club attire.” Ava looked Liz over in her waitress’s uniform. “Oh well, it’ll have to do…” Ava stated, pushing play as Liz started to sweep. Her mother wasn’t home. She had gone to her sister’s home in Albuquerque for the week, so Liz didn’t have to worry about waking her up. Kevin had left this morning, as well, saying he had to get back to work but that he would call her. She had been filled with an intense relief at his leaving. Liz didn't know what was wrong with her but she could no longer pretend that she and Kevin belonged together. Sweeping, Liz looked up to hear Christina Aguilera’s voice hum through the speakers:

When I, thought I knew you
Thinking, that you were true
I guess I, couldn’t trust
‘Cause your bluff time is up
‘Cause I’ve had enough
You were, there by my side
Always, down for the ride
But your joyride just came down in flames.
‘Cause your greed sold me out of shame, mmhmm

She smiled, laughing, as Ava swung her hips. ‘C’mon Liz, let’s give him something to dream about tonight.” Shocked, Liz met Max’s gaze and then Ava’s. She shook her head ‘No’, holding in her laughter. Ava grabbing Liz’s hands, “C’mon, Liz” Liz laughed uncontrollably, swinging her hips along to the lyrics. Max watched Liz in a trance, spellbound. Her body moved hypnotically to the music, her brown eyes twinkled with happiness and mischief, her soft curls swinging seductively in her face, as her lips, which had always captivated Max, sung along to the lyrics.

When I, thought I knew you
Thinking, that you were true
I guess I, I couldn't trust
'Cause your bluff time is up
'Cause I've had enough
You were, there by my side
Always, down for the ride
But your, joy ride just came down in flames
'Cause your greed sold me out of shame, mmhmm

Kyle watched as well. But it was Ava his eyes were glued to. He wanted her, badly. He watched yearningly, eating her up with his eyes as she danced. Kyle had had the night off tonight and instead of going home to an empty apartment. He had decided to drop by the Crash Down for a glimpse of Ava. He felt like he had died a happy man because he had got that much and more. Kyle had tried to talk to her that day at the cookout to make up for being a moron but she had avoided him as much as possible. Kyle wasn’t the type to give up, though. He wanted her and by Buddha he would have her.

After all of the stealing and cheating
You probably think that I hold resentment for you
But, uh uh, oh no, you're wrong
'Cause if it wasn't for all that you tried to do
I wouldn't know just how capable I am to pull through
So I wanna say thank you

Max and Kyle weren’t the only ones watching. Tess watched as well. Max hadn’t taken his eyes off of Liz since she arrived. Tess watched Liz with a deep seated hatred, hidden beneath a blank mask. Feeling her cell phone vibrating against her leg, Tess looked to Max’s dazed expression. It would start tonight. Let him have his fill of the perfect Liz Parker because by the end of the week she’ll be gone, for good. “Max... Max I’m going home. Are you coming?” “No, you go ahead…” Max replied absentmindedly. Tess smiled, thinly, before getting up to walk outside. She spotted the gray van across the street and smiled. Tonight… it all started tonight

'Cause it makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter

Liz felt a prickle of unease as she danced. The unease grew and grew, filling her with dread. Finally stopping, Liz stood frozen before walking over to the counter. Turning down the volume to the stereo, she listened. Everyone watched in confusion as Liz stood, listening. Liz heard it, a thump and ran. ‘No, no, no.’ she thought as she sprinted up the steps like a speed of lightening. Max. Isabel, Michael, Maria and Ava right on her heels. The door was sealed shut. Liz cried out, using her powers to the open the door.

She gasped as she found Amelia lying limply on the floor before searching the room for Alex. Max, upon entering the room, went over to Amelia. Breathing hard, he healed any injuries she might’ve of had. In the end, reviving her. Liz looked back, making sure Amelia was ok, before climbing out onto the balcony. Looking down, she watched as Alex was yanked into the van. Oh… God. “Alex…” she screamed climbing down the ladder, frantically. “Mommy… Mommy… please help me…” He screamed, crying, as the van door slammed shut behind.

Oh, ohh

Never, saw it coming
All of, your backstabbing
Just so, you could cash in
On a good thing before I realized your game
I heard, you're going around
Playing, the victim now
But don't, even begin
Feeling I'm the one to blame
'Cause you dug your own grave, uh huh

Liz ran into the street after the van, trying her best to keep up with the van. She cried Alex’s name over and over again as she watched the van disappear. Liz cried in anguish before collapsing onto the hard concrete. It hurt. It hurt so badly. Hugging herself, she rocked back and forth crying Alex’s name. She never heard Max, Michael, Maria, Ava, Isabel, and Amelia behind her. But she did feel herself being lifted off of the concrete by warm, strong arms. Liz calmed down, then, weeping. She buried her face into Max’s chest as they walked back to the Crash Down. Everyone else followed behind somberly. Amelia looked behind her in tears, beseechingly, as the van's headlights disapeared into the darkness. Aunt Ava hugged her shoulders tightly, in support and love, as she was lead into the Crash Down cafe.

After all of the fights and the lies
Yes you wanted to harm me but that won't work anymore
Uh, no more, oh no, it's over
'Cause if it wasn't for all of your torture
I wouldn't know how to be this way now, and never back down
So I wanna say thank you

Tess watched from the shadows as Max carried Liz back to the Crash Down. She smiled with hatred. Oh… she couldn’t wait... and this was just the beginning. ‘Don’t worry, Liz...’ She thought. ‘You’ll be seeing your son 'very' soon.’

'Cause it makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
Makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
It makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter

'Fighter' by Christina Aguilera

Chapter 6
In the Crash Down:

“I want to call it in… put an APB out on the van…” Kyle sighed, walking over to sit at the counter, before pulling out his walkie-talkie. Everyone sat in a worrying silence, waiting. Liz paced a hole in the floor, her bloodshot eyes filled with torment. Maria sat upon Michael’s watching Liz in worry and concern from her own tear filled eyes. But at Kyle’s statement all three women came alert. Liz stopped mid-pace, Ava tensed, stroking Amelia’s hair, and Maria sat up, eyes alert. “I don’t think that’s such a good idea Kyle...” Maria replied looking to Liz, uneasily. “What? Why the hell not…” He asked, startled, walkie-talkie in hand. Everyone else wondered as much but Max knew

He sat across from Maria and Michael, watching Liz. His panic and fear almost as strong. God… what if something happened to him? Max didn’t know Alex that well, to his regret. But he loved him just the same simply because he was a life both Liz and Max had created. Isabel watched as well, in silence, wanting to ask the same thing. She had been watching Liz with concern. She couldn’t imagine losing a child, having it stripped away from her. She couldn’t imagine a nephew being taken away from her, either. Isabel didn’t know for sure but she had her suspicions, seeing as though Alex looked exactly like Max . She was just going to wait… maybe Liz had a reason for keeping Alex and Amelia a secret… maybe this was it.

At first, Isabel had been filled with shock and rage at finding out the way she did. During the picnic, she had found out from Ava that Liz was single mother and the father wasn’t in the picture. Isabel’s suspicions being confirmed. She watched the kids, especially Alex. Jesse sensing her mood, then, decided to take her home. They argued about Isabel’s suspicions before Jesse convinced her that maybe Liz had reason and maybe Isabel should give her time. She had been enraged but Jesse had proved to calm her down by promising her she could talk to Liz by the end of the week if nothing came up.

Maria looked at expectantly to Liz, who looked so defeated. Kyle prompted upon seeing Maria and Liz’s little exchange “Liz…” She sighed before turning to look at Max, “This wasn’t just some random kidnapping, Kyle, as you all suspected… And Alex isn’t just some normal little boy.” Sitting upon a stool, she continued to stare into Max’s hazel eyes. “He can defend himself like Michael and he can also heal… just like his father. He can manipulate molecular structure! Amelia… she’s a talented dream walker like her aunt. She can mind warp like Tess and… heal just as well as Alex. ” Silence filled the room as everyone sat in silence. Liz hadn’t expected this. She had expected gawking, shouting, recriminations, anger but not this calm silence.

She glanced at all of her friends and then her gaze landed on Max. What was he thinking? Was he angry? Was he happy? His face was blank but his eyes hadn’t lost its intensity. Liz suddenly felt overwhelmed with fear and regret. She closed her eyes against the onset before opening them in tears. “I’m so sorry…” She whispered in defeat. “Just tell me this, Liz, who else knew about this?” Max asked calmly, pushing away the urge to walk over and hold her. “Maria… just Maria.” Max’s gaze met Maria’s instantly in question. Maria looked back at Max, puzzled. “What, Max? I told you the day she left…” Max stared at her with a fierce frown. “Maria, you never told me anything… As a matter of fact, I’m wondering, Liz, why you didn’t say anything that day you came over.”

It was Liz’s turn to look puzzled. “What are you talking about, Max? I never came to tell you anything. I wrote a letter to Maria and my parents and left.” Everyone sat up straighter, listening to the conversation with a deep sense of dread and confusion. Max became angrier and confused then. “Liz, you came to me that day. You said that you were going away for awhile and that you were staying with your Aunt in Florida. You said you were moving on and that I should too.” Max stated in desperation. Maria shook her head, whispering, “Max… Liz never came to you that day, I did. Michael was there, too… Remember? I punched you in the nose…” Michael frowned, rubbing Maria’s back soothingly. Something wasn’t right. Either Maxwell was losing it or Tess was mind warping him, maybe all of them. Max’s blood drained from his face. He looked met Michael’s worried gaze to confirm his suspicions. “Ok… someone please explain this to me, please.” Kyle sighed. Isabel started to cry. Liz stood frozen in shock. “It was Tess… If she could… Alex. Kyle, put in that APB.” Liz whispered, meeting Maria’s panic stricken gaze.

“Damn, how could this have happened? So many years…we trusted her.” Kyle groaned after he cut off his walkie-talkie. Everyone sat in a stony silence. “God… I wish we could do something instead of just sitting here.” Maria mumbled, angrily, against Michael’s shoulder. “Hey… you two are dupes, right. I don’t see why you didn’t feel anything, see anything…” Michael exploded into the silence in Ava’s direction. Kyle frowned fiercely at Michael. Ava frowned as well, looking Michael up and down. “I’m not a mind reader, yo. Just because I’m her dupe don’t mean nothin. You’re just as connected to her as I am. Why didn’t you see or feel anything?” Ava snapped. “Hey… I’m not the one that sent Maxwell, here, to New York, knowing damn well Lonnie and Rath were going to kill him!” Michael yelled.

Ava looked about ready to self-combust but Kyle interrupted first, standing, “Michael cool it, buddy. It’s not her fault that Tess is a conniving b…, so don’t take it out on her.” Michael gently pushed a protesting Maria off his lap before standing up, facing Kyle. “I’m not taking it out on her. But how do we know that she wasn’t in on it with Tess? How do we know that she isn’t mind warping us just as well…?” Liz couldn’t take it any more. She was so scared. She felt it overwhelming her to the point that she couldn’t breathe. Liz silently strode into the back room thinking about Alex, hugging herself in desperation. Was he scared? Were they hurting him? Where was he?

Max sat in silence, his face set in lines of rage, as the others’ argued. Max's gaze moved from the group to Liz and he stiffened as he watched her walk away. Standing up, he followed her into the back. Everyone suddenly went quiet as they watched Max walk away. “What are we doing?” Maria whispered in guilt as she watched the door close behind Max and Liz. “We should be doing something other than arguing…” She whispered meeting everyone’s guilt ridden gaze before meeting Amelia’s tear filled eyes. Stiffening under everyone’s gaze, Amelia wiped away her tears before meeting Isabel’s eyes. “Me and Alex have a connection… I think I can connect with him to find out where he’s at!”

Walking into the back with others following, Amelia found her mother and father hugging. At the sound of the door opening, Liz pulled away from Max before wiping away her tears. Looking up at her mother, Amelia told her what she wanted to do. Nodding, Liz took her daughter’s hand before leading her upstairs. Moments later, Amelia, with her head on her mother’s lap, formed a connection. A few minutes later, Amelia broke the connection, crying. “What happened, Amelia? Where’s Alex?” Liz demanded, panicking at the fear in Amelia’s eyes. “He’s in a van…He’s crying… He’s-he’s trying to use his powers. He has something tied around his mouth. He’s afraid. So afraid, mom!"

Fifteen Minutes outside of Roswell, New Mexico

“I know why I want Liz dead…but why do you?” Tess asked as she watched Alex moodily yank at the bindings around his wrists. Kivar smiled, “Because LaTanya is the key to Zan’s demise. You kill her. You kill him, I’ve learned, at least emotionally.” Tess became frustrated at his use for calling Liz ‘Latanya’. “Why do you call her that? Her name’s Liz.” Kivar grinned at Tess, leaning against the wall. He enjoyed shocking Tess almost much as he enjoyed hurting her. “Silly me… that was her name back home, in another life. Latanya De Christoff, ‘The Fairy Queen’.”

Tess stood frozen, “You're lying…” “I would never…” Kivar replied with a grin. “It can’t be… she’s human… just a stupid human.” Tess whispered in desperation as Kivar stalked her. “Or is she? She’s just as much an ‘alien’, Tess, as you and I. She’s also the queen.” “You're-you're lying!” Tess whispered in rage, sobbing. “I’m the Queen. Me… not Liz Parker.” “Oh… that’s where your wrong darling, she has as much right to the crown as you do.” Kivar taunted, grabbing the sides of her head in a death grip. “Remember…” She shouted in terror, struggling. “No…” “ C’mon Tess, remember?”

'She sat watching as Zan and Larek swam, laughing. She stood on the Dimara’s rock. He was so handsome. Prince Zan… he was going to be her husband. Right at this very moment, daddy was signing the alliance contract. Prince Zan had been her betrothed since birth but this was the first time Ava had actually laid eyes upon him. At that moment as if sensing her gaze, he glanced up. He stood in the moonlight, his muscles and chest glistening with water. She smiled, waving. He smiled, shyly, before talking to his friend. Ava stood there for several moments, watching the guys’ splash and laugh before she finally left with a satisfied grin. '

Suddenly she was jerked into another memory, her wedding reception. 'She walked around, lingering and laughing with friends receiving congratulations. On the podium, Zan sat upon his throne, Rath and Kivar by his side. He smiled as guests approached him bowing, presenting gifts and congratulations. Zan grumbling to Rath, “How much longer until this is over?” Rath smiled a true smile, “Not for another four hours. Relax, Zan your honeymoon will be here, soon.” Zan grimaced, whispering. “I’m not worried about my honeymoon, Jacka--. I’ve already sampled the goods. What I want is sleep. It’s been almost a week since I’ve received any.”

‘ Kivar smiled, obliviously hiding the fact that he heard everything. It was no secret that Zan could barely tolerate his sister, hell, he couldn’t tolerate her. Upon first meeting, Zan had been patient and nice to Ava, despite the fact she seemed to be hiding behind a nice facade. It was just something about her manner that put him on guard. As if he would always have to watch his back for the knife she’d plunged in it. It wasn’t anything she had done, of course. It was just him. He had been against the joining of alliances since the beginning but his father had refused to let him 'refuse', so he had grudging agreed. Now, he was a married man. Sighing, he watched the room in interest. That was when he spotted her.'

'In a shadowed corner, across the large ballroom, stood Princess LaTanya De Christoff. She couldn’t believe she was standing here with these aristocrats when she could be at home with her family, watching the sunrise. Watching the sunrise would be a lot more interesting to Latanya than listening to these snobs gossip. But Kivar, her betrothed, had insisted she be here. So here she was at King Zan and Queen Ava’s wedding reception. Zan watched her from across the room mesmerized by her beauty. “Kivar…” “Yes, your Highness…” “Who is the goddess over there in the corner?” Kivar followed his gaze and grinned proudly. “That’s my betrothed, Zan. Princess Latanya De Christoff..”

‘He watched her with awe and desire growing in his veins. She stood like Queen, looking down upon her peasants. She had a gentle, patient smile upon her face but she stood alone, virtually alone. As if she was there but she wished to be somewhere else. Strange… seeing as though his balls were the talk of Antar, all around. “Introduce me.” He commanded. Kivar bowed but with resentment. He bowed to no one. It was his destiny to be King. Kivar was meant to be seated upon the thrown and for that fact Zan would forever have his undying hatred. They were friends once as boys but as men they would forever be enemies, unbeknownst to Zan.'

'Latanya slowly made her way to the throne, chin high, at the curious stares and whispers. She knew she was considered a barbarian, living in the wild, but she couldn’t care less as she stared into the most amazing eyes. They were a beautiful hazel-brown framed by thick, eyelashes that made her dizzy with desire. He was absolutely beautiful, as rumored. “Your highness…” Latanya whispered, bowing while never breaking contact from his gaze. The air buzzed with excitement around them. Zan’s stomach clenched in desire as she came closer. Dressed in an off-white sheathed gown, she was stunning. The gown hugged her curves seductively making Zan crave to slide it off of her. Her dark chestnut hair was pulled tightly into a French braid while a few strands of hair were left loose, lying against her cheekbones. She had deepest dark brown eyes he had ever seen. She was exquisite and Zan wanted her. “Tell me Princess… how did I miss your arrival?”'

Tess was, then, thrust into another scene. 'The soldiers dragged her out without a fight. Her hands were covered with blood and she smiled as she came upon the sight of Zan kneeling over Latanya. At that moment, Ava jerked back in fear as he lunged at her. There was an icy stillness to Zan’s rage. He was out for blood and he wanted Ava’s. But before he could get his hands on her, Rath blocked him. “Move…” He growled his eyes deadly cold with intent. “No my lord, I will not. She deserves die but don’t give her the satisfaction of it being brief.”

‘ Zan’s eyes flashed, his rage unleashed. “You are my friend Rath. Don’t let me lose focus of that and end your life this instant. As my Second in Command and my servant, you ‘will’ step aside.” Rath stared at his friend calmly despite the fact that Zan was about to run him through. He felt his friend’s pain and it was an unbearable feeling. A few moments of silence went by before Zan nodded turning to Ava. “You will die, Ava, but not before I use every method there is of torture in Antar’s Dungeons to make you scream in agony and regret that I hadn’t ended your miserable life at this very moment. You can thank, Rath, for that.”'

Tess became conscious, sobbing in agony. She cried and cried until her voice was but a croak. She glanced around to see Kivar had left. So the bastard had decided to leave her alone with his little gift Tess thought enraged as she climbed to her feet. Alex stared transfixed at Tess as if she had two heads. She screamed in rage, scaring the little brat, before walking calmly into the morning air. Sitting in her jeep, Tess cried long and hard. Afterward, she wiped her tears away. She knew what she had to do, more than ever now. Liz had to die, tonight. Tess would make sure of it because Max could never find out about his 'real' destiny. If he did… she would lose him for good.

Chapter 7
Rewind…to the night before at the Crash Down:

Upon entering Liz’s old bedroom, Max found Amelia crying upon Liz’s lap. Liz looked up at his entrance. The fear and desperation evident in her brown eyes. “I can’t stand sitting here!” She whispered, stroking Amelia’s head. “I have to do something… I can’t just sit here…Maybe we can find something in her stuff… something that can tell us where Alex is.” She suggested with a hope so clear in her voice that Max immediately agreed. “That’s a great idea. I’ll go get Michael and Isabel and then we’ll be on our way.” Max finished turning to leave but halted as he watched Liz climb to her feet. “Mom?” Amelia sat up in surprise, her gaze following her mother across the room.

Turning towards her daughter’s voice, Liz gave Amelia a hopeful smile. “I’ll be back soon. Maria will be here so you won’t be alone.” “But mom…” Walking over to Amelia, Liz stooped down to meet her daughter’s panic filled gaze. “No buts Amelia. You’re to stay here with your Aunt Maria. Promise me that you will stay here.” “I promise…Promise me that you’ll come back.” Liz smiled softly. “I promise, okay?” Nodding but with despair, Amelia felt her mother’s kiss on her fore head before she walked away. Pulling on her jacket, Liz walked to the door where Max stood watching her.

“What are you doing?” She looked up at him, in the mist of zippering her jacket, with an eyebrow raised. “Going to find Alex, Max. You didn’t actually ‘think’ I was just going sit here, twiddling my thumbs while you went searching for Alex. Did you?” “It’s too dangerous Liz! She might be there at this very moment. Trust me to find him, please.” Max pleaded. “Trust you… Max. That’s my son out there. My baby. So no, I’m sorry but I can’t trust you!” Determinedly pushing past him, she made her way down stairs to find everyone was still there, waiting.

“Okay… this is the plan. Kyle you’re driving with Isabel. Michael's with Max. And Ava you’re with me. We’ll start the search with Tess’s stuff. Maria... you’ll stay here.” Maria looked up, surprised, “No … no, Liz, I’m coming with you.” Michael shook his head, “No Maria, you’re staying here.” Maria’s face contorted in anger. “Michael…” “He’s right, Maria. You’re eight months pregnant. I need you here with Amelia. So please, Maria.” Liz’s eyes pleaded with Maria. “Oh alright…” Maria sighed dejectedly. Liz smiled before kissing her on the cheek. “Thank you.”

They searched Max’s house from top to bottom. Neither Tess nor her jeep was there when they arrived. Isabel and Ava searched the kitchen, while Max and Michael searched the garage, and Kyle and Liz searched Tess’s bedroom. There was nothing…absolutely nothing. Liz moved her search to the walk-in closet while Kyle searched under the bed. Searching through the closet Liz suddenly found a box. Opening it, she found old encrypted articles. The same encrypted articles they found on Alex’s computer that day in Las Cruces. Touching them, she received an image of Alex typing while Tess stood over him. Liz gasped as she came out of the vision, “What was Tess doing with Alex in Las Cruces?” She mumbled, fumbling with the papers before coming upon ‘The Alien’ book. Picking it, Liz gasped, crying out, as the images bombarded her. But the last condemning vision was of Alex’s death.

Alex: You did this to me, you sent me to Las Cruces
Tess: Okay, Alex. Alex let me fix your mind, you’re not thinking straight.
Alex: You mind warped me for two months while I decoded this silly book for you and now there’s nothing left for you to mind warp. You destroyed my mind! How could you do this to me?
Kyle enters the room, then, baffled.
Tess: Kyle get out!
Kyle: What’s going on?
Tess: Kyle go!
Alex: I have nothing, I might as well be dead.
Kyle: Hey, just calm down.
Tess: He’s right, okay. Calm down! Just calm down!
Alex: No, you can’t mind warp me. No!!!
Tess mind warps Alex, in a panic, and he collapses, limply, to the floor.
Outside minutes later:
Kyle: Your duffel’s all loaded
Tess: Thanks, Kyle.
Kyle: Want me to come along?
Tess: No. Go in the house. I’ll take care of everything.[/b][/b]

Liz came out of the vision weeping. “It’s okay, Liz. Shhh” Kyle whispered rocking her back and forth. “What the hell’s going on?” Michael barked, upon entering the closet with Max, Isabel, and Ava right behind him. Kyle shook his head, rubbing Liz’s back. “I don’t know, man. She was in some sort of trance. Then she started crying. Liz…” Looking down in concern, he spotted a book. “What’s this…?” Liz looked up at Kyle and her eyes filled with more tears. “Kyle…” Taking his head between her palms, gently, she stared deeply into his brown eyes. “I’m so sorry, Kyle, but I need you to remember.” Liz whispered, sobbing.

She made a connection with him. Healing him in the process. Everyone looked on for answers as they watched Kyle and Liz connect. Seconds later, Kyle let out a gasp, crawling backwards, away from Liz. He put his head into his palms and began to bawl. “What is it, Liz? What did you find?” Isabel asked kneeling front of her. Liz stared at her, her face devoid of color. “Tess killed Alex… She mind warped him until he had nothing left!” At that moment, Isabel formed a connection with Liz, seeing everything that she saw. Breaking away, Isabel started sobbing in anguish before being pulled into Michael’s arms. “Oh God!” Looking back at Kyle’s distraught form, Liz crawled over to him, hugging him as he cried. “She-She made me carry his body, Liz… She made me carry his body.” Max silently made his way out of the closet to slump onto the bed in exhaustion. Tears rolling down his cheeks as he sat in agony.

They searched all morning looking for Tess and the van. But nothing came up. The town was eerily quiet as they made their way into the Crash Down. They had searched all of the back roads, the Granolith Chamber; abandon buildings, Tess’s first home. But came up with nothing…no Alex… no Tess. The APB Kyle called in hadn’t work, either. There were no gray vans or tan four door Blazers driving the streets or parked at abandoned at caves. Liz, tired and defeated, climbed the stairs to her old bedroom. Both Maria and Amelia were knocked out sleep. Moving into the bathroom, she splashed her face with cold water before brushing her teeth.

Looking into the mirror, she sighed. Her eyes were bloodshot and her face was puffy from crying. She decided, then, to wake Amelia up before doing anything else. Sitting on the side of the bed, she stroked Amelia’s hair. “Amelia…” Eyes fluttered open to the sight of Liz’s smile. “Hi, I’m home.” Amelia whimpered, then, in tears at the remembrance of her missing brother. “I tried to dream walk him but it didn’t work. I couldn’t make a connection.” Liz smiled sadly in tears. “We’ll find him! Now go back to sleep.” Liz answered, stroking Amelia’s dark hair back from her fore head “Where are you going?” She asked sitting up. “Just for a walk, I’ll be right back.” Liz promised closing the door behind.

Making her way downstairs, Liz found everyone sprawled out in the break room, even Isabel. Everyone came alert as Liz came into sight. “She tried to dream walk Alex but couldn’t connect.” Everyone stood alert, then. She pulled on her jacket again. “Sit…please” Liz commanded as the group stood to follow her. Everyone obeyed except Max. “Where are you going?” “To the Cemetery…” “It dangerous, Liz” “Don’t you think I know that, Max. I just need some time to think…okay?” Max looked ready to argue but Liz interrupted, sighing. “Look, I have my cell phone with me. So if anything goes wrong you’ll be the first one to know about it.” Max nodded in compliance. “If you’re not back in an hour Liz, we’re coming after you.” Michael spoke up, exhausted. Liz just smiled before leaving.

At least six blocks away, Liz lightly ran her fingers over Alex’s tombstone. “I should’ve seen it sooner… I’m so sorry, Alex. You were the last person on earth who deserved this.” A breeze blew lightly making Liz shiver in her waitress’s uniform. “I wish you were here. I wish you could tell me what to do!” She whispered, running her fingers over his beautiful daisies and cards. She wondered who had left them probably his parents, Isabel, or Maria. Picking them up, Liz sniffed them. They were new. All of sudden, she was bombarded with a vision of Tess lying the flowers in front of the tombstone. Liz froze, searching the surrounding area with her gaze. All was quiet. It wasn’t a single person in sight. So why did it feel as if someone was there, watching her. “She was here, recently, but why…” All of a sudden, she felt a presence behind her. Standing, she turned slowly around to find… Max?

“God Max, You scared me. What are you going here?” Liz sighed, rubbing her heart. “We found him…” He answered with a relieved smile. “What?” “We found Alex. C’mon Isabel, Michael, and Ava are waiting in the car.” Watching Max jog back to the car, Liz called after him. “Wait…how did you find him?” But Max didn’t answer, but instead just kept on jogging. He must’ve not heard her. Something wasn’t right here. “C’mon, Liz…” Max called back, opening the door to the driver’s seat. Liz looked to him frowning, before jogging to the car. She wouldn’t let herself get her hopes up.

So, she remained silent during the drive out of the Cemetery. Looking back, she saw that Michael, Isabel, Ava were sitting in a weird silence, staring ahead. Liz, then, looked to Max and found him smiling like an idiot. “How did you find him, Max? Where is he?” Max just grinned like an idiot, driving past the Crash Down. “It’s a long story. I’ll tell you, later.” Liz became furious at his response. “No, Max. You’ll tell me, now.” “Just calm down, Liz.” Max laughed, pulling over to the side. Liz, suddenly, glanced in the back to find that Michael, Isabel, and Ava had disappeared. Looking to Max she found Tess instead, smiling. “Hi, Liz…”

“Tess… where’s Alex?” Liz breathed silently, trying to stay calm. “Safe, I thought you might want to see him?” God yes, she wanted to see him, to make sure he was ok, to kiss and hug him, to take him home. Not to mention the fact that she could alert the others to her whereabouts. “Yes… take me to him.” Liz commanded, looking straight ahead. Tess smiled. Liz was making this too easy, but then again Tess knew it would be. Smiling proudly, she snuck glances at Liz while pulling off. Tess drove the fifteen minutes out of town, through the desert, to the warehouse. Liz jumped out before the jeep came to the stop, running. She was, suddenly catapulted into the air, hitting the ground with a hard thud.

Tess smiled as Liz tried to sit up, gasping in pain. She, then, used her powers again to slam Liz into the brick building, knocking her unconscious. Tess, giggled in delight, as she dragged Liz’s limp body into the shelter. Alex turned, to the entrance then, to watch as his mom's unconscious body was dragged in. “Mom…” He cried out, jerking at his binding, trying unsuccessfully to use his powers. “That’s right, Alex. Mommy’s here. She’ll be up in no time. I promise.” Tess called, binding Liz's hands and feet together. Alex started to cry as he watched blood trickle down his mother's forehead. Pulling out a syringe, Tess smiled tapping Liz’s arm for a vein. “Don’t worry Alex; I haven’t hurt your mommy. She won’t die…yet.”

Chapter 8
Forty-Five Minutes Earlier

A few moments after Liz left the Crash Down, there was a tense silence. Leaving Max, Michael, Isabel, and Kyle to their brooding, Ava made her way up stairs to check on Amelia. Downstairs, they sat worrying, contemplating Tess’s motives for Alex’s death and Alexavier’s kidnapping. The only difference being, Max’s thoughts were also on Liz. He suddenly stood, alerting everyone. “What, Max?” Isabel asked warily. “I’m following her...” Michael nodded at Max in understanding. At that moment, Maria came wobbling downstairs in a panic.

“Where’s Liz?” She demanded upon spotting Max, Michael, Isabel, and Kyle. “She went for a walk…” Michael muttered, standing to help her down the remaining steps. “What? You let her run around town, alone, with that psycho b—loose?” Maria screeched, looking at them as if they had all lost it. “Maria, she just left just a minute ago. I’m gonna follow her incase anything happens.” Maria looked him, then, “Well move you’re a--, then. I swear if anything happens to Liz. I’m holding you all responsible!” “Here take this, Max.” Isabel demanded, tossing her cell phone to him. “Thanks…” “Max, go.” Maria cried out, pushing Max out into the Café.

Max watched as Liz sniffed the flowers. Her straight hair now framing her elegant features. He couldn’t get a good look at her expression from the bottom of the hill but he could imagine her bittersweet smile and beautiful eyes filled with tears. Max felt like an intruder. This was supposed to be private for Liz. She had asked for that and he was now denying her that privacy just by being there. He had a mountain of self-condemnation towards himself. Max was the reason Alex was taken. He was the reason a good friend was now buried. He was the reason for all of Liz’s pain, then and now. Why hadn’t he seen it? Why hadn’t he seen Tess for what she really was? She had been deceiving him for years and except for a few times of uneasiness, he had never felt it.

Who was he? He wasn’t a king… A king would’ve felt such a deception, right? Max didn’t know. All he knew was that he had to fix this before it was too late… and, then, he’d leave Liz alone for good. Because just by knowing Max, by being friends with him her life and their son’s life were in danger. Glancing back up to Liz again from inside the car, he watched perplexed as she had a conversation with… no one. No one was there. All of a sudden, she was shouting and running in the other direction. Max started the engine in a panic before driving in a semi-circle to the other side of the cemetery. That's when he saw Tess’s tan jeep. Slowing down, he pulled out Isabel’s cell phone.

Watching as Liz hopped into the passenger’s side, he waited impatiently for the other line to pick up. Finally Maria picked up, “Maria, put Michael on, ‘now’.” “What is it, Max? What’s happened?” Maria demanded furiously. “Maria please put Michael on the phone…” He sighed, pulling off behind Tess. “Okay-okay. I’m sorry just hold on.” Following behind Tess at a safe distance, Max impatiently waited for Michael to pick up the phone. “Yeah…what the hell’s going on Maxwell?” “I found Tess. She has Liz. We’re getting ready to drive by. Follow me from behind…” Max finished, hanging up, before watching Tess as she pulled over. Max slowed from behind, also, pulling over to the other side of street. Hoping that Tess didn’t notice his 2-door pickup, Max had to kill the urge to slam out of the pickup and grab Liz. But Tess would take Liz to where Alex was being held. He would bet his life on it.

A Few Minutes Earlier

“Sh—“Michael muttered, hanging up. “We gotta go. Tess has Liz and Max is behind them.” Everyone froze before moving into action. Michael, Ava, Isabel, and Kyle ran to the entrance of the Crash Down when Michael stopped causing Maria to crash into him. Stumbling back, Michael grabbed her with a frustrated sigh. “Goddamnit Maria…stay here.” Pushing him away, Maria grew even more furious. “No, I’m coming with you, Michael.” Michael shook his head in denial. “Liz is my best friend. If anything happened to her or Alex...” At that moment, Amelia entered. “Where’s my mom?” Michael sighed, grabbing Maria’s shoulders, “Listen, I have to go. Liz would’ve wanted you here with Amelia. So can you please stay ‘here’?” Maria nodded whispering, “Yes… just promise me you'll bring them back.” Michael promised, before sprinting out of the Crash Down behind the others. Isabel was seated in the passenger seat as Michael hopped in, starting the engine, while Ava had already pulled off. “Let’s Go, Michael. Tess and Max already passed.” Maria watched Michael drive off before turning to find Amelia gone

Fifteen Minutes Outside of Roswell

Michael drove past a large abandoned warehouse before pulling up behind Ava, and Max on the road. Michael and Isabel jumped out, meeting Max and the others at his jeep. “Where are they?” Max nodded toward the warehouse, “In there, I was just pulling up when Tess dragged Liz in. Listen… we can’t go in there without a plan. We need a plan. God… I wish we knew the lay out of this place. It’s too big for all of us to just go in. But we have no choice. So the fewer the better. Kyle, Isabel, and Ava can be the get away drivers.” Kyle was the only one in agreement with this. “Max, you need all the power you can get. Tess is much more advanced at her powers than we are.” Isabel argued. “Hey I agree with Isabel, yo. We should 'all' go in.”

At that moment, Isabel’s cell phone went off. Irritated, Isabel answered to hear Maria’s hysterical voice asking for Michael. Everyone frowned as Michael answered. “What is it, Maria?” Listening, his gaze narrowed toward Ava’s car. “Alright, Maria calm down. It’s okay. Go sit down before you faint.” Michael terminated the call then before stalking over to Ava’s trunk. “What’s wrong?” Max asked, following him. Using his powers to unlock the trunk, Michael frowned down fiercely at the small duplicate of Liz Parker, smiling innocently.

“Uhh, we have company!” Kyle called as he heard the hum of a car approaching. Michael cursed while Max grabbed Amelia up before running towards Ava. “Hide us…” Ava nodded her compliance before mind warping whoever the driver was to see nothing but the road as he parked. The group almost broke Ava's concentration with their low groans, cursing and ohmigods as the figure stepped out of the Lincoln and into the building “You can break it, Ava. You mind telling us why Kevin is here?” Max asked, growling over her shoulders. “Let’s make it for another time, Max. Liz is in there but to ally your fears. No I don’t know why Kevin just entered that building.”

Chapter 9
Inside the Warehouse

Liz moaned in pain, her eyes fluttering open. “Mom… Mom, wake up.” Alex called, softly, watching as Tess and Kevin argued, nervously. He had always known something was up with that guy. He was just too perfect…too nice. Alex watched as his mother struggled to sit up. Whimpering in pain, Liz succeeded, taking in her surroundings in confusion. ‘Where was she?’ And then she remembered. Looking for Alex, her gaze found him and she smiled in relief. “Hi’ she mouthed. Alex returned her smile before looking at Tess and Kevin pointedly. Liz sucked in a breath, wincing in pain. Kevin? Sweet handsome Kevin was someone else all together, Liz realized.

Tess and Kevin were arguing and they were very loud about it, too. “Look everything is going as planned…” Kevin shouted, incensed. “As planned? We had an arrangement, Tess’ you were to bring me ‘Vilondra’.” Tess nodded in fear, “I did bring the heir… and as for Isabel I was sidetracked.” Kevin looked ready to self-combust. Moving as quick as lightening, Kevin’s hands were around Tess’s throat squeezing, tightly.

Lifting her off the floor, Kevin smiled menacingly. “Sidetracked? You will have Vilondra on that ship tonight. If you prove to be one minute behind schedule, Tess, I swear I will do the one thing I should’ve done twenty years ago.” Letting go, Tess dropped to the floor gasping. “Now that I think about it… I’ll just take the boy now.” Liz, lying on the cold floor, screamed in outrage as Kevin stalked over to Alex. “No…you son-of-b--…No.” Kevin smiled, before coming to stoop in front of her. “My love… always so beautiful. Tess… before you rid this beautiful thing of the Earth… tell her of her past.” Liz met his eyes with all the hatred in the world, before looking at her son. Using her powers, she called out to him, “Don’t cry, Alex. Mommy’s going to come for you. Don’t cry.” Alex nodded holding in his tears as he was jerked away by Kevin.

Isabel, Kyle, Michael, Ava, Amelia, and Max watched from outside as Kevin tossed Alex into the car. Max struggled against Michael as Amelia cried against Ava’s hand. After Ava’s mind warp was successful and the car was gone, Max shoved Michael away. Breathing hard, Max started violently after Michael. “Maxwell, just calm down. If you would’ve went after Kevin that would’ve alerted Tess. And Liz and Alex would’ve been hurt or worse. We’ll get him, Max. But since we’re here… it’s Liz first, maybe she might know where they’re headed.” Michael suggested reasonably, after a few moments of silence Max nodded before turning to Ava. “Keep her out here…”

Amelia shook her head in denial, tears spilling down her face. Max stooped, coming to eye level with his daughter. Hazel-brown eyes looked into hazel brown eyes as father and daughter took each others’ measures. With his thumbs, he wiped her tears away. “Amelia, I need you to listen to me. Can you do that?” “Yes…” “I need you to stay here with your Aunt Ava. Your mommy and a bad lady are inside. And if you go inside, you might get hurt. And your mommy and I would be very sad if anything happened to you. So as to not make your mom sad, can you please help me by staying out here.” Amelia tilted her head to side as if thinking and then smiled. “Ok…” Max grinned proudly, “That’s my girl.”

Inside, Tess stood, rubbing her throat. Liz sat there watching her with a dangerous intent. Slowly, as if feeling Liz’s glare, she turned around. There was silence as hatred and angry flooded the room in waves. “This was all planned wasn’t it? For almost ten years, you’ve been plotting this. Why?” Tess smiled, stooping in front of Liz, capturing one of her dark locks “Because I always knew you’d come back. You’re so predictable. No wonder Max got bored with you.” Playing with Liz’s hair, Tess looked into her eyes smiling, condescendingly.

Liz laughed. “Are you serious? Max was in-love with me, not you, and still is actually. That’s why I’m here isn’t it? You really think that if you killed me Max would actually love ‘you’? You’re a manipulative b---, Tess. Max would never fall for some one like you unless you were mind warping him… and not even then would he fall!” Enraged Tess yanked Liz’s hair hard, making her wince. “News flash Liz, he has fallen for me.” “Really? Is that why he sleeps in a separate bedroom? Or why he couldn’t take his eyes off me since I drove into town? Is that why you want me dead? Is it, Tess. Because if that’s love your welcome to him.” Tess frowned before using another tactic. “Liz, haven’t you ever wondered what happened to daddy?”

Liz froze for a moment, her face draining of its blood before crumpling. Tess smiled as watched Liz’s reaction. “You-you killed him didn’t you?” Becoming enraged at her silence, Liz screamed in a violent anguish. “Why, Tess? Why…He was innocent.” “I didn’t kill him, Liz…” Tess answered with false sympathy. Liz sobbed onto her knees, ignoring Tess’s taunts. “The man you know as Kevin, or I should I say Kivar, did.” Liz finally looked up with cold eyes. “You’re lying… Why would Kevin… Kivar want my father dead?” Giggling, Tess sat in front of her Indian style, “Awww Liz that’s where the story really begins. Here… let me show you.” Liz screamed, trying to shrug Tess’s hands away as she formed a connection.

Liz was thrust into a void of memories, experiencing everyone’s thoughts and feelings as they came. She was witnessing the past, their past. Max, Isabel, Michael, and Tess’s. Antar was a beautiful planet, everything so much larger and more advanced than Earth. Liz watched Max and Tess’s first meeting and wedding but then that’s when things got really confusing. There was another woman, a beautiful woman, who to Liz’s disbelief looked exactly like her mirror image. Her name was Latanya De Christoff and then that’s when she remembered:

Latanya was the Princess of the Wilderness. She was engaged to marry Sir Kivar ‘The gentleman’ when she had met Zan, the King of Antar. Their first meeting, at Zan’s wedding reception, was electrifyingly intense. Liz felt what Zan felt, as if he had stopped breathing, at his first real look at Latanya. They had tried their best to avoid each other and their attraction for one another while Latanya was still a guest in the castle. He threw himself into his marriage, why she had tried to stay content in being just a guest. At that time, Kivar had been witnessed in associating with assassins and traders to the King.

He had admitted to as much, arguing that he had deserved to be king just as much as Zan. He was then held for trial, proved guilty, and sentenced to death. Despite the fact that he and Zan were child hoods friends, Zan couldn’t and wouldn’t forgive Kivar’s treachery. Zan and Ava’s marriage was on the rocks, as well. Their marriage failed simply because of his unyielding hand as a king and her manipulative ways as Queen. Not to mention the fact that Zan’s mind was always on another woman. Ava didn’t notice this at the time. She was too busy trying to convince Zan to set her brother free.

Finally, Ava took it into her own hands. Without evidence to aiding a trader, Ava went with out a trail… but not without her king and husband’s suspicions. One night so desperate for her husband’s unwilling touch, Ava had tried to mind warp him into making love to her. But it had proved to be unsuccessful as Zan had filed for a petition of divorce the next day… of course after banning Ava from his land. Ava had become deadly furious at Zan’s cruelty. She had loved him and he had humiliated by divorcing her and banning her from their home. Everything was so clear. It was as if Liz was watching a very suspense movie with herself included. She then watched as Zan made his move on Latanya following her to the Wilds of Antar.

Zan, during his stay, built a small castle dedicating it to Latanya. She had refused to even step foot in the castle until he changed the name. They had become good friends, flirting outrageously. Latanya was back in her element. She was home. Zan had requested visits with her daily until one day her father, Prince Rainer, had requested a marriage despite the fact that Zan was a king of Antar. Liz noticed that Prince Rainer looked nothing like her father here on Earth and frowned. She watched as Zan had, of course, agreed while Latanya had refused saying she needed her space and wouldn’t be the least bit obedient as a wife or a slave. Zan had, then, set out to prove to her how much he wanted her as his wife. He hadn’t realized the reason for it was because he was in love.

Zan had continued to propose: having ‘balls’ in her honor, writing laws: such as no woman, in her right mind, should refuse a man’s proposal, especially if the said man is a king. She had, of course, gone against the laws and had refused numerous times. He had written her little notes, sent her gifts, bought her land and still she had refused. Liz watch with a grin as Latanya denied the king of Antar again with a radiant smile. She felt Latanya’s love for Zan growing each and every day, until she felt as if her heart would explode. Finally Zan had had to leave on a two month business trip to his Kingdom. Before leaving, he had proposed to Latanya once again. With Latanya’s last refusal and their first kiss, he had promised to come back for her.

It had taken him close to six months to fulfill that promise. After months and months of waiting, Latanya had begun to doubt if she would ever see the King of Antar again. She had been miserable, not having the urge to do anything but mope and worry her parents. Finally one day on the coast of Wilderan, Latanya had sat in her favorite spot on the beach watching the sun rise. As if feeling someone’s presence, she had looked up to her left to see a bearded –hazel eyed pirate watching her. She let out a laugh, climbing to her feet before running into his strong arms. Wrapping her legs around him, she peppered him with kisses.

Finally catching her mouth, all the playfulness had disappeared from Zan and Latanya souls were quickly replaced by love and desire. The kiss was long, scorching their souls. Latanya bit his bottom lip before soothingly sucking the wound. They stayed that way for what felt like an eternity. Giving each other open mouth kisses while murmuring to one another, they realized that they were finally home. “Will… you…marry me Latanya De Christoff?” Latanya tilted her head to the side matching his grin with one of her own. “Ummm, no… I don’t think so.” She grinned, giggling. Zan retaliated pinching her rear. “Ow.” “We’ll then, I’ll just have to take you back to my castle and ravish you, ruining you for any other man.” Zan whispered huskily into her lips. “Well… take me then, my king.” Latanya replied, sighing into his mouth. “I intend to, Princess.”

The next morning, Latanya had awakened to the tender caresses of her king. “Zan…I’m trying to sleep.” Stroking her with a white rose, Zan had met Latanya’s deep brown eyes. “Wake up, Princess. I have just one more proposal my tender heart can take asking. So get dressed.” With Zan’s help, Latanya had dressed in no time and was led blind folded to Zan’s secret destination. Slowly taking the blind fold off, Zan met Latanya’s eyes with serious ones of his own before turning her around. Looking over her shoulder, Zan watched transfixed as Latanya’s beautiful features filled with wonder.

It was a lavender waterfall crashing down into a small pond. It was absolutely beautiful. She loved nature, loved the wild. It was as if it were her other half. And Zan knew this because he knew her. She beamed up at him with delight. “Thank you.” “No thank you… just say ‘Yes’. Can you swim?” Latanya shook her head, “No not really. I’ve always loved the sight of water but it’s seems to not agree with me.” Taking her hand, he pulled her into the water. “Come my Queen.” “Zan, no… my gown…” “Will be replaced.” Zan answered, leading her to a huge rock.

Standing in between her legs, he had let her hair down. “I’ve asked you many times to accept me as your husband, haven’t I Latanya?” She nodded in answer. “But I’ve never quite ‘asked’ have I? I’m a king and in nature I’m not use to asking for what I want. Just taking. But some how I knew from instant I laid eyes on you that you weren’t possession to be taken but a gift to be cherished. For the last few months away on business, I felt…lost as if something or someone was missing and then I realized what that someone was… you. That if I were to ever to become a good man and king, I would need you. So what I’m trying to ask Latanya is… will you be my wife? And take in mind that as long as I live that I will never stop asking for your hand.” Zan finished, smiling with hope.

“I’ll ask you one question, Zan.” “Ask away, my Queen.” Latanya had looked into his beautiful hazel-brown eyes, stroking his glistening hard chest. “Do you love me?” No longer smiling, he had looked into her eyes with all the seriousness of man in-love. “Yes.” “Say the words, Zan” “I love you. Now, you say the words. All four of them.” Latanya laughed, arms encircling his strong neck. Leaning down, she pronounced each word with a kiss. “Yes, I…love…you. Yes, I’ll marry you. Yes to all the above.”

A week later, they were married in a small ceremony off the coast of Wilderan. Immediately afterward, they had been settled happily in their small castle as newly-weds. One dark day, not two months afterward, Latanya sat curled up in Zan’s favorite recliner waiting for her husbands return. All was quiet in the castle. Suddenly the door was thrust open. Hoping it was Zan, Latanya jumped out of the recliner. Only to see it wasn’t Zan who stepped through the door but his ex-wife. She no longer looked as the queen of Antar but as a peasant… a deranged peasant. Backing up, Latanya held out her hands. “Ava…put the knife down.” “You stole him from me…” Ava lunged in rage.

Latanya ran to the other side of the bed, lunging over it. Running to the door with Ava behind her, she tried to unlock the doors with shaking hands but it wouldn’t work. Zan had installed all the doors with a special lock equipped to deflect powers. At that moment, Ava was on her. “Get up, b—!“ Ava growled grabbing Latanya’s hair in her fist. Pushing her towards the arched window, Ava smiled, putting her knife to Latanya’s back. Gasping at the distance from the ground, she cried. ‘Oh god was this it? Was this the way she was supposed to die? She came to the heart wrenching conclusion that it was when Ava whispered into her ears, “Say goodbye Fairy Queen. Let’s see if you can fly.”

At that moment, Zan and his men came into sight. They’d never make it up here in time, Latanya thought. At least she would get to say goodbye. It was breaking Latanya’s heart that they didn’t get to grow old together, that they wouldn’t see their baby girl come into the world. At that moment as if sensing her gaze, he looked up smiling. Latanya smiled back with all the love she had in her before the knife was thrust into her stomach. She went flying with one last thought in her mind of how much she loved Zan.

Liz watch as chaos rein on Antar after that day. Zan had lost his will to live, to protect, to rule. He had simply given up. The royal members of the family including Ava had died that night in the mist of war. Zan was the last to die, sitting in his recliner holding Latanya’s wedding ring as he watch his death approach. Antar had many more bad times like that day to come under Kivar’s rule. In a last hope to salvage Antar, the remaining royal family had sent down the royal four.

Latanya De Christoff was sent down separately by her family as the Fairy Queen of Antar. Liz gasped as she came out of the connection. She was Latanya. She…Liz Parker was really in reality Latanya De Christoff. But how was that possible? She was human with human parents? But that was Liz in that vision… in her past life. It just couldn’t be. Liz thought in denial because then that would mean her whole life was a lie. “Now do you see, Liz, why I have to kill you? Max is mine. The crown is mine.” Tess stated vehemently. “Oh, I don’t know about that, Tess.” Max growled from the doorway with Michael beside him.

They both lounged against the doorway, insolently. Tess froze before yanking Liz up in front of her as a shield. Liz and Max shared a brief message before Max looked up into Tess’s eyes. “You need to know, Max, that I never intentionally wanted to hurt you.” “Oh yeah, you could’ve fooled me. Well, technically you did. You succeeded at accomplishing everything you set out do…except for one thing.” Tess frowned at Max, dragging Liz along, as he stalked her. “What’s that Max? Everything that I did was for you, for us.” “No you’re wrong, Tess. Everything you did, all the pain caused, was simply for you.”

“No ‘you’re’ wrong, Max. It was for us. We belong together, now and then, but you could never let go of this silly b—could you? We were a family, Max, but you lost all focus of that when Liz came back. Why couldn’t you love me? Why couldn’t you treat me as if I was the only thing that mattered?” Tess sobbed. “I gave you everything I had available Tess, including my trust. You’re right when you said that Liz was the only one that I could ever think of. She’d have never mind warped me. She’s never lied to me. I never had to doubt her motives. With you, though, that’s a different case. I married you out of duty, Tess, not love. I thought we could make a marriage work with simply that but I was wrong. I don’t love you, Tess.” Max finished baiting Tess into using her powers to let Liz go and it worked.

“Stop Max…just stop it.” Tess screamed, throwing Max against the nearest wall. Liz ran as Michael tossed Tess across the room. Tess, upon, standing retaliated by throwing the abandoned steel desk at Michael‘s head, missing him by an inch. Liz used her power, then, to toss Tess into a water heater. Max stood up groaning as he watched Tess stand as well. “B—.“ Tess screamed throwing Liz into the brick wall. Both Max and Michael retaliated by throwing Tess into the nearest wall. Tess hit the wall with a thud before slidding down unconscious. Max limped over to Liz, helping her up. “Here let me heal you…”

Looking into each other’s eyes, they formed a connection. Max saw everything that Liz saw. Stunned, Max broke the connection. Utterly speechless, he waited for Liz to say something as to what he just saw. Uncomfortable with Max’s close scrutiny, Liz shyly lowered her eyes before looking up to meet Max’s gaze, again. “Thanks…” Max smiled in bafflement, trying to process that vision. “Your welcome… Princess. What did I just see, Liz? Was that real? ” Liz ducked her head, then, uneasy at his questioning gaze. "I don't know, Max. I'm still trying to digest it myself..." “Uhh Maxwell, she’s coming to... and she looks really pissed.”

Max and Liz turned to see to Tess rising, her usual green eyes black and devoid of emotions. “I can’t believe I ever begged for your worthless life. I should’ve just let Kivar kill you. It would’ve saved me a whole lot of trouble. But that’s fine see because now I get to see you watch your precious Liz die.” Tess finished, giving Liz a full blast of her power. Liz hit the wall hard, falling unconscious. Amelia entered, then, watching her dad and uncle Michael fly across the room as well. “Aye lady?” Amelia screamed, giving Tess a full blast of her power. Running into the room, Amelia used her power to lift and throw Tess’s limp body across the room. “You’re an evil, evil lady.” Amelia screamed in rage as she threw Tess’s body to the other side of the room. “But you made one mistake, lady… you messed with the wro-ong kid.” Amelia finished, putting all of her power into this last blast. Tess hit all four corners of the room before her dead body hit the floor.

Chapter 10:

“Mom…mom, please wake up” Amelia called, kneeling before her mother’s unconscious body, in tears. At the sound of grunts and groans, Amelia turned to see Uncle Michael helping her dad up. Wincing at the pain throbbing through his head, Max limped as fast as he could to Amelia and Liz. “Amelia…Amelia” Ava, Kyle, and Isabel called in a panic as they ran into the room. They immediately stopped upon seeing Tess’s broken body. Their gazes moved to Max, Amelia, and Michael leaning over Liz’s body. “Oh God…” Ava croaked before running to kneel, as well, over Liz. “Aww man…what happened?” Kyle demanded, kneeling as well. “That evil lady did it…” Amelia sniffed, as tears fell. “Everyone be quiet I need to concentrate. Liz… I can’t do this with her eyes closed.” Max whispered in fear as he tenderly stroked her cheek. “Try anyway, Max” Ava replied shrilly, as she held Liz’s hand.

Taking a deep breath, he tried and after several moments succeeded. When he opened his eyes again, he found Liz’s eyes watching him. “Mom…” “Liz… are you ok?” Sitting up, Liz tried to get her bearings as she glanced at all the faces surrounding her. “Yeah, I’m fine… Alex. Kivar has Alex. We have to go!” Filled with fear, she stood with the help of Max and Amelia. Liz gave them grateful smiles before spotting Tess. Nodding her head towards Tess's body, she asked. “Is she…dead?” “Yeah.” Michael answered, following Liz’s gaze. She nodded, somberly with out a word, before quickly making her way to Ava’s car with the others following closely behind. Michael stopped Max with a hand on his shoulder. “What do we do with her?” Max looked ahead. “We’ll figure it out once we have Alex.” Walking over to Ava’s car, Max leaned down by the passenger side where Liz sat with her eyes closed. As if feeling his presence, Liz opened her eyes, meeting his. “Where do you wanna search first?” “The Granolith Chamber.”

Fifteen Minutes later, they were parked outside of the rock formation. They had spotted Kivar’s Lincoln immediately on the road as they climbed out. Max was the first to head up to the rock, followed by Liz. They all but ran up the cliff as their dread and worry climbed. Laying his palm upon the cool rock, Max entered the pod chamber. Holding his hand up in self- defense, Max climbed through one pod, halfway, spotting Alex and Kivar immediately. Kivar was typing a code into the Granolith as Alex sat huddled in a corner. Alex immediately looked up, spotting Max. Max held a finger to his lips in silence before slowly climbing out. Kivar looked up just in time to see Max landing on the ground, soundly. “Bravo your Highness, Bravo” Kivar clapped, clearly impressed.

Liz climbed in next, followed by Michael, and Isabel. “You’ve impressed me. I didn’t think you had it in you.” Max kept his hand up, as a shield. He watched Kivar with a deadly calm. “C’mon aren’t you going to greet me like a good old friend?” Max remained silent as he took Kivar’s measure and formed a plan. Smiling, Max decided enough was enough. It was time for this to end. Using his powers, he blasted Kivar clear across the chamber. Max shouted, “Run…go” as Alex ran past him. Liz obeyed picking Alex up, before climbing through the pods to the outside. “Go…now” Max demanded as Michael and Isabel were about to argue.

At that moment, Kivar stood up, calmly. He reacted by pining all of them to the pods. “C’mon, that’s all you have, Max?” He smiled shaking his head in disgust while holding them up. “You were said be one of the greatest Kings, not to mention the greatest warlords of Antar, and that’s all you have to give me? I could never believe the words of others especially if it was about ‘you’. You were such a weak King, especially after Latanya’s death. How you were ever chosen as King over me still baffles me to this day. But of course the problem can be easily rectified by your death.” Max, like the others, struggled against the bonds that held him. Finally giving up, Max used his powers to throw Kivar into the Granolith, shutting off its power.

Max, like the others, hit the floor. Standing up, Kivar screamed in rage, blasting the ceiling. “You have been a thorn in my back side long enough, Max, and for that and every thing else you've cost me. You will pay!” All of a sudden, the ground shook as the ceiling started to fall. He ducked, as Isabel screamed and Michael shouted, but it was too late. The ceiling hit Max first, followed by a rock, the size of a hand, knocking him out cold. Isabel and Michael dove out of the chamber for cover. Outside, Liz cried out, escaping Kyle’s hold. She ran up the hill, entering the chamber to find Isabel and Michael sprawled on the ground. They stood with difficulty, dust covering their bodies.

Liz pushed past Michael as he started to climb through the pods. “Max?” She gasped as she saw Max’s body buried half the ceiling. “Oh god…” Suddenly, Liz was yanked painfully into Kivar’s arms. Liz screamed, fighting, as he forced her into a pod. Succeeding in pushing a fighting Liz through a pod, Kivar blasted Michael and Isabel on sight before making his way outside. Liz struggled violently against Kivar as she was led down the hill. “Be a good girl Liz and stop fighting. Or I’ll kill Max Junior over there!” She stopped struggling, obediently. At that moment, Ava, Kyle, Amelia, and Alex came into sight. Liz watched crying and fighting as both her children and her friends were tossed into the air. Coming to a halt at the Lincoln, Kivar held a hand up in the direction of Alex in a warning while opening the passenger side door. Climbing in without a fight, Liz met Ava’s eyes in the distance before Kivar started the engine and sped away.

Outside of the rock formation, Alex watched terrified as Kevin drove off with his mom. In a panic, he started to run. Entering the cave, Alex saw Aunt Isabel lying in a corner unconscious while Uncle Michael struggled to stand. “Where’s my dad… he’s got her. He’s got mom!” Ignoring Uncle Michael’s command to stay back, Alex climbed through a pod. Lights flickering over the damage, casting shadows, Alex searched the room with his gaze, spotting his dad under a pile of rocks. He ran over, uncovering Max as fast as he could, crying.

Tossing rocks away, Alex dropped down beside his dad’s wounded body. Blood dripping down the corner of his mouth, Max’s eyes flickered before opening to meet Alex’s. Framing his dad’s head, Alex formed a connection. He saw and felt everything that defined the man that had fathered him. Moments later, Alex sat back as he met his father’s gaze, so like his own. “He’s got mom…” That was all it took for Max to quickly stand up and lead Alex out of the Granolith chamber and cave, past Isabel and Michael, to safety. Making sure his son and daughter were ok, Max started at a dead run down the hill, before jumping into his jeep. Starting the engine, he sped off.

Ten minutes away, Liz struggled to open the door. Kivar glanced at her with a smile, speeding along the highway. Frustrated, Liz turned her glare to the man beside her. “Where are you taking me?” “Home.” “Why me? I’m just a human.” Liz argued. “Wrong, Latanya, you’re the Rightful Queen… and you could be of some use to me providing an heir.” “I’m not a Queen. I’m Liz Parker.” “Sorry darling, wrong again. You’re Latanya De Christoff, Queen of Antar. You’ll serve me well at my side. Of course you’re not Vilondra but you’ll have to do.” “Hang on darling… we’ll be there in do time” Kivar smiled as they saw a sharp curve on the side of the road up ahead. She glared at him as he smiled at her.

Looking into the rear view mirror, Liz noticed a dark pickup, speeding along the highway. ‘Max…’ She cried out in relief. Kivar also noticed the pickup. Grimacing, he sped up. From the pickup, Max leaned out of the window, using his powers, to form a cloud of sand surrounding the Lincoln. Driving, Kivar tried to see past the cloud blocking the road but failed. Liz, at that moment, chose to lean forward, using her powers, to unlock the door. The vehicle swerved a little as, Kivar grabbed for her but missed as she jumped from the vehicle at the bend in the road. Kivar, trying to gain control, swerved to round the curve before flying engine first off the steep cliff and into the river.

Slowing down, Max put his foot on the break hard as he tried to avoid hitting Liz. Jerking to a halt at the side of the road, he jumped out before running the small distance to where Liz lay. Slumping to the ground, again, Max caught her up. Holding Liz, they both fell to the ground in exhaustion. Being held so close on Max’s lap, Liz sighed in relief, against his rapid beating heart. Resting his chin into her head, Max watched as Ava and Michael’s cars advanced up the highway.

Bringing their cars to a halt, everyone stepped out taking in Max and Liz’s exhausted positions on the side of the road. Michael and Isabel after making sure Max and Liz were ok, walked to the edge the cliff to watch as Kivar's Lincoln moved with the river. With an uneasiness that this wasn't over, they hugged each other, tightly, before making their way back to the car. On the side of the road, Amelia and Alex ran over to Liz, smothering her with hugs and kisses. Back at the car, Ava smiled in relief. She was startled when Kyle came up from behind her, nuzzling her neck. “Be warned that when this is over, I’m taking you out.” Ava laughed, shaking her head.
