Rating/Couple: TEEN, M/L
Disclaimer: I own nothing, except a massive fear of commitment, a lot of apathy, and a really cute pair of Sketchers... please don't take them!
AN: I wrote this forever ago, but just decided to post it this morning. I wrote it after MITC when Liz lied to Max, and I started thinking about when she could tell him the truth. And it occurred to me that I always had an easier time telling the truth when I could just write it... so here we go! I also wrote it right after I started going to chat rooms for the first times, and there really are chat rooms like the one I use here... I hope this comes out okay, formatting wise... and thanks in advance for reading! Let me know what you think?

AN: Well, I figured it was time to repost this over here. I started posting Dial Up over a year ago, and wow, if anyone had told me I'd still be writing/posting it now, I never would have believed you. I want to thank all of you who have read it for such incredible feedback and support. You've truly made my day with kind (and some not so kind or subtle) words. :) Sadly, due to school, I don't really have time to repost all the previous parts, but I will give you a link to them. :)

So for parts 1 - 32 of Dial-Up: Connection, please go to:
http://www.roswellfanatics.net/archive/ ... 75484.html

New parts will be posted here. :)

Thanks, again,
Jenn

<center>~*~Part 33~*~</center>

Of course, sometimes to reach the inevitability of success, challenges had to be overcome. And for Alex and Liz, their biggest challenge was, of course, Tess. She was still in the parking lot when Liz pulled in, and she waited right by her car to see Liz and Alex/Dr. Schaffner get out of hers.

Liz nearly groaned when she saw her and tried not to think of all the things she’d like to do if she only could… “I can handle talking to her, right, Alex?” She tried not to look over at the blond girl who was trying to steal her life, her destiny. Liz shook her head, knowing she would give up the title or crown or whatever, if that was all Tess wanted. But she wanted the one person who gave Liz’s life meaning and purpose. And Liz would not give him up.

“Yes, you can, Liz. You’re stronger than her, remember that.” He whispered as Tess walked closer to them.

She stopped in front of them. “Liz?” She said in her friendliest voice. “Who do you have with you today?”

Liz put on her fake smile. She knew it didn’t matter that she looked something like the Joker without make-up. Tess knew what Liz thought of her. The fake smile and conversation was just to go along with the game they played of being friends. “Hi, Tess. This is Dr. Schaffner. He’s from Covington University—“

Tess heard the word university and allowed all her dreams of getting Liz Parker out of the way to come to the surface. “Are they encouraging you to go to college early? I’ve heard that’s being done a lot more lately. I, of course, think it’s a wonderful idea for you! I mean, you need to take as many advantages as you can if you’re going to be a molecular biologist before you’re 30, right?” She smiled as they started walking towards the building. If only this dream came true, her future with Max Evans would be as easy as…mindwarping a human. She smiled internally at that little pun.

Liz saw through Tess’ questions easily. She was seeing a life with Max, no doubt, just running through her head. “Well, I don’t know about graduating early,” Liz said, “I mean, I’d miss out on all the fun stuff in high school, you know. Prom, skip days—“ killing you, she thought.

“Oh, I guess I do need to start planning for prom, shouldn’t I? I mean, I’ll need to choose a dress so Max can find a matching tux.” She smiled. “It’ll just be like---“ she looked at Alex, knowing that even thought his would be a wonderful time to remind Liz of the destiny she and Max shared, she needed to edit her words—“old times.”

“Right,” Liz said and started walking quicker. She was not going to let this---girl hurt her. She was stronger. She was stronger. She was stronger.

“Elizabeth, I don’t believe you’ve introduced me to your friend. Perhaps—“ Alex decided to play with Tess’ emotions for a while.

Liz looked at Alex, wondering what he was going to do. “I’m sorry. Dr. Ryan Schaffner, this is Tess Harding. She’s a junior here, too.”

He nodded. “Harding?” He acted like he might have heard the voice before. “That name is not pulling any strings with me. I thought I’d memorized the names of all the honors students here.” He looked down at her. He dismissed her just as quickly. “Oh, well, Elizabeth, perhaps we should continue—“

“What are you here for, Dr. Schaffner?” Tess looked him over. He wasn’t actually that bad to look at. She just didn’t like the way he barely paid any attention to her. Couldn’t he recognize who she was?

“Oh, I’m on a recruitment trip.” He put his arm around Liz’s waist, like he was guiding her.

“You’re recruiting Liz?” Tess tried to keep the joy out of her voice.

“Yes, of course. Have you seen her grades? Her letters of recommendation? She’s destined for something special, don’t you think? I mean, some people are just meant to have boring lives, but I think that Liz is destined for something that no one has ever imagined before.”

Liz smiled a little. Trust Alex to throw barbs in such an eloquent way. She doubted Tess would have caught that.

“Well—“

Alex checked his watch. “Elizabeth, we’d better get to the principal’s office. He’s waiting for us.”

“Wait! Who else are you recruiting?” Tess asked.

“I’m sorry, Miss. I can’t reveal that.” He allowed Liz to lead him through the familiar halls towards the principal’s office. He whispered to Liz, “I never thought I’d miss this place.”

“You’ll be back soon, Alex,” she whispered. “And things will be so much better.”

He smiled. “I know.”

They stopped right outside the principal’s office door. Liz casually looked across the hall to where Isabel was standing at her locker and then reached out and touched Alex on the arm. Isabel would start the mindwarp now. They waited another second and then walked into the office.

Mrs. Wilkinson, the secretary, looked up in surprise. “Why, Liz, what are you doing here?”

She smiled, hoping this was working. “We have an appointment, Mrs. Wilkinson. This is—“

“Dr. Schaffner from Covington University!” Mrs. Wilkinson jumped up. “Of course!” Liz and Alex smiled at each other. They’d never seen the secretary move so quickly! “We’ve been waiting for your arrival. I’ll just get Principal Fuller.”

“Thank you.” Alex leaned back against the counter a bit, as he always wanted to when he was a student there. Of course, as a mere student, he didn’t dare. Mrs. Wilkinson was known to be a bit of a nazi against slouching on her ‘spotless’ counters.

Mrs. Wilkinson was only gone a few moments before she came back. “He’ll see you in his office now.”

Liz and Alex walked into the principal’s office. He was standing beside his desk in a full 3-piece suit. Liz was nearly impressed. She’d never seen Mr. Fuller in a full suit, usually his jacket and tie were off, outside of graduations. But he couldn’t have known when he dressed this morning that he would be meeting someone from a prestigious university. Did he just have this kind of clothing hanging in his closet, waiting for days like this? She wondered for a second if she would find out if she touched him…

“Dr. Schaffner, I’m Steven Fuller. We spoke on the phone.”

“Of course. Thank you for welcoming me to your campus.”

“Of course! You’re bringing about some very exciting opportunities for our brightest students,” he smiled at Liz, “like Miss Parker.”

Liz smiled. “Thank you, Mr. Fuller.”

“Now you mentioned you’d like to invite Miss Parker—“

“Yes. I’ve already spoken to her parents, and they have agreed.”

“Wonderful.” He wrote a few things down on his yellow legal notebook. “Do you have any ideas on who else you’d like to invite?”

Alex nodded. “I do, but perhaps it would be wiser to send Elizabeth to class.”

“I agree,” Mr. Fuller looked at Liz. “Just ask Mrs. Wilkinson for a pass, Liz.”

“Of course.” Liz stood up, smiled at Alex, and walked out.

Isabel was still waiting in the hall. “How’d it go?”

“Alex is doing incredibly, Is! He needs to think about a career as an actor!” She smiled. “Tess saw us on our way in.”

“What’d she say?”

“Well, she’s interested in who is being recruited.”

Isabel smiled. “I bet.”

“Can you tell if she’s tried anything?” Liz worried.

“She doesn’t know what’s going on, Liz. I don’t feel any other mindwarps or anything alien going on right now.”

“How much longer are you going to hold the mindwarp? They believe that that is Dr. Schaffner from Covington. Mr. Fuller is signing up students to go with him now.”

“I know. Just a few more minutes, just in case.” She smiled a little. “I think I’m allowed to be paranoid right now, don’t you think?”

“Sure,” she smiled. “Well, I’m going to calculus. This is the only one Max and I are alone in today. I want to have the opportunity to make a few googly eyes at him before we have to deal with Tess.”

Isabel smiled. “Don’t embarrass yourselves! Or my good family name, please!”

Liz laughed. “I wouldn’t think of it.”

Isabel turned back to facing the office. She wondered how it was going.

<center>***</center>

Alex had never felt so powerful in the principal’s office before. Mr. Fuller was going out of his way to make Alex so…welcome. Usually a visit to this office meant problems and there was definitely no offer of coffee or water.

“We are just so honored that Covington is interested in some of our students.”

“Well, it appears that West Roswell High is a fine school, interested in increasing its student’s potential and future.” He had to wonder where all this B.S. was coming from. When had he learned to speak so smoothly? Maybe the deep voice brought it out in him.

“We certainly are.” Mr. Fuller sat down behind his desk. “You mentioned you had already chosen several students?”

“Yes. I—we, the recruitment committee at Covington, are interested in several students, all in the junior class.” He pulled a leather notebook case from his briefcase.

The principal picked up a pen, ready to add names to his notes.

“First, of course, was Elizabeth Parker. I cannot wait to introduce her to my colleagues and our labs. I’m confident that she will love it.”

“Well, Miss Parker certainly is devoted to her studies,” Mr. Fuller said. “Who are the other students?”

Alex made the act out of scanning his papers. “Second is Maxwell Evans. His paperwork hints at a real interest in history and politics.”

Mr. Fuller nodded. “Mr. Evans is a fine student. The only thing you should probably know is that Max and Liz have recently suffered a nasty, public break-up.”

Alex raised his eyebrows. “Really? Do you think that will stop him from wanting to participate? I mean, if he simply knew that Elizabeth was already committed, would he reject the idea of attending the recruitment week?”

“Perhaps.”

“Maybe I should talk to Mr. and Mrs. Evans about this. Surely they want what is best for their children.”

“Of course, they do. Why Diane Evans—children? Did you say children?”

“Yes. Isabel Evans is my final choice.”

“Isabel?”

“Yes. Her grades are magnificent. Not as high as her brother’s or Miss Parker’s, but wonderful, nonetheless. It seems like the only reason they might not be as high is simply her involvement in so many extracurricular activities.”

“Yes, Isabel’s definitely a real go-getter.” Mr. fuller picked up a file off his desk. “I’m actually very excited that you brought her up. I would have, had you not. Her grades are good, yes, but she also has the opportunity to graduate at the end of this year, a full year early.”

Alex tried not to look or sound surprised. “Really?” Isabel was leaving him? She would graduate early? What about all the time they were supposed to have together? What about all the things they were supposed to do as seniors? What if she went to college and found some big guy—who looked like Dr. Schaffner—and decided she wanted him more than a skinny high school boy? His mind filled with so many what-ifs…

“Yes. Her guidance counselor and I talked to her about it several weeks ago. She still hasn’t decided whether or not she will graduate early, but we certainly are hopeful. It will give her quite an advantage.”

Alex nodded and resumed his role. “This might be just the opportunity she needs. Perhaps seeing how a college environment differs from high school will encourage her to make her decision quickly. And hopefully, Covington will welcome her in the fall.”

Mr. Fuller smiled. “We’ll certainly hope so.”

“Wold there be any way to bring the Evans into the school today so we can discuss their children? I’m sure they’d be interested in this. I mean, I’ve not met a parent yet who isn’t interested in possibilities for scholarships and top notch education.”

“I’m certain the Evans would like this idea. They are both very active in their children’s lives.” He picked up Isabel’s file again. “I’ll just call them.”

Alex nodded. The plan was going perfectly.

<center>***</center>

Isabel looked at Max from across the lunch table. “Did you see Dad’s car in the front parking lot during 3rd period?”

“It looks like everything is going our way,” Max smiled, wishing Liz could be sitting next to him rather than trying to avoid the near occasion of Tess.

“Finally,” Michael said, taking a bite of his taco. He looked around the quad wondering where Maria was. She’d said she’d have lunch with him today.

“Don’t you get a little paranoid about this? I mean, it’s just been so long since I truly felt—“ Isabel found she didn’t have the words to explain the feelings she’d been having all day.

“Yeah, it can inspire paranoia, Is, but I just know things are going to be okay.”

Max and Isabel were both speechless to hear those words coming from Michael’s mouth. When had he become an optimist?

“I know it sounds odd coming from me, but, for the first time in my life, I just know—nothing will hurt us this time. We’re too strong for anyone to hurt us.”

Maria slid into the long bench beside Michael. He immediately wrapped his arm around her. “So what’s going on, guys?”

Max and Isabel looked between each other, instantly knowing the true source of Michael’s optimism and smiled. “Nothing, Maria. How’ve you been?”

“Ah, you know, classes do not always mean fun.” She grinned and took a french fry of Michael’s lunch tray. “Has this been Tabasco-ized?” She looked at it intently before putting it in her mouth and smiling.

“Where’s Liz?” Max asked quietly.

“She taking her lunch in the eraser room,” Maria smiled. “I’d suggest you go on there, Max. You don’t want lunch to get----cold.”

Max smiled and stood up. “Thanks, guys.” He turned around and found Tess standing directly behind him, waiting, it seemed. He tried to sound natural. “Tess, hi.”

“Hi, Max. Where are you going?” She set her tray down.

Max felt his chances of a good lunch being destroyed. “I needed a drink.” He said quietly.

“Well, I’ll save your seat till you get back.” She sat down next to where he was sitting.

‘Love?’

‘Why aren’t you here yet?” Her impatient voice filled his mind and he immediately felt at ease, just feeling her through their connection.

‘We’ve got a glitch in the system.’

His voice told her everything. ‘Named Tess.’

‘Yes.’

‘You know, the first thing I do when she’s finally out of our lives forever—‘

Max smiled, knowing where her mind was going with that thought. ‘Not if I can do it first.’

‘I love you, Zan.’

‘I love you, too, Asha.’

Max walked back to the table carrying a can of cherry coke and forced himself to sit down next to Tess. He saw the immediate sympathy in Isabel’s eyes that was quickly hidden when she dropped her eyes toward her lunch tray.

“So Max, how has your day been?” Tess looked at him, wondering if he knew Liz was going to Covington for a week. How could she present that in a way that made it look like she was betraying him by leaving?

“Pretty good. Yours?”

Before she could answer, Maria and Michael escalated a whispered conversation they were having to a full voice interaction. They spoke in impossible to understand monosyllables, until Maria turned to Tess.

“Tess, we—I need a favor.”

Tess was shocked by that one. She certainly hadn’t been expecting Maria to ever say that to her. “What?” Why was Maria asking her for favorites? What was going on?

“It’s just that Liz is going away for a week—“

As if on cue, Max’s face fell. “A week? Where is she going? Who with?” He instinctively knew this was going to be how they got Tess to be too busy to try to find the rest of them.

“Don’t worry about it, Max. Liz is a big girl. She can take care of herself,” Michael forced himself to sound jaded. He silently pondered if he’d always sounded like such an asshole when he had nothing to care for.

“Anyway, with her gone for a week, the Crashdown is going to be in serious trouble. She has lots of shifts that no one knows about. So we’re going to need extra help or the Parkers are never going to let her go anywhere again. I mean, when they realistically see how much they overuse their daughter, they’ll realize how much they need her.” Maria knew her babbling would annoy Tess to no end. “Anyway, since you were so kind and willing to donate your time the other day, becoming this total lifesaver, by the way, I was wondering if you’d be willing to help me out again and take Liz’s shifts next week?” Maria finished her long-winded babble.

“You want me to waitress again?” Tess said disdainfully.

“You were so good that day. I mean, you dealt with the hardest customers and just handled it like a pro. It would mean so much to me.” Inside her head, Maria kept chanting, This is for the good of my friends over and over. She could handle a week of seeing Tess daily if it meant that soon her friends would be able to get rid of her for good. She was doing this so Alex could come home looking like himself and so Max and Liz could be all adorable together…and she was doing this so SpaceBoy could find his family—whoever that may be.

Tess didn’t look convinced.

Max decided to help her out. “Wow, Maria, that was really big of you to ask Tess. I know you guys aren’t completely close, but by asking her, it shows a lot about the way you respect people. And how willing you are to ask for help.” He smiled. That sounded like the right psychobabble he’d heard the last time he’d seen Dr. Phil on Oprah.

Tess looked at Maria and Max. She knew she was stuck. There was no way she could say no without looking like a complete bitch, and it wouldn’t do for Max to have that image of her in his head. “Sure, Maria. I’ll help out.”

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Maria did her best happy squeal, even though she was dreading a week of working with her.

“What are friends for?” Tess said slowly. She couldn’t believe it. Another week spent waitressing. If Khivar could see her now…

The lunch bell rang and everyone headed to class. Maria walked with Tess telling her the basic shifts she would have and promising to have a uniform for her. Max hung back around Michael and Isabel for a moment.

“Is, this afternoon, you need to get in touch with Valenti. Let him know some of what’s going on, not everything, but just why Tess needs to work this week. He’ll make sure she doesn’t skip any shifts.”

Michael broke out in a smile only Maria had ever seen. “Guys, this is going to work. I know it will.”

And when a person who was once as negative as Michael Guerin suddenly finds faith in optimism, it’s hard to disagree with him.

AN: Well, I've declared this day "Jenn's official wriitng day" so yay, here we go. Hopefully (i fully expect) there will be more out soon. :) (or later, depending on when i go to the gym). :)

thank you all for reading this and keeping up with this story that has grown so much longer than i ever expected.

Jenn

{anything in italics is conversation betwen Max/Liz via their connection} Oh, and i should probably mention that this part is very transitory. I just kink of missed the nice Evans parents (before Mr. Evans went psycho dad in season 3) and I wanted them somewhere in here...

<center>~*~Part 34~*~</center>

Max and Isabel drove home together that day, anxious for the conversation they would be having with their parents. The principal hadn’t called them into his office at school, so they figured the discussion about going to Covington for the week would have to come from their parents. Isabel teased Max the entire way about showing too much excitement at the idea. They would never let them go if they knew he was looking forward to it as a chance to hook up with Liz.

“Like you aren’t looking forward to a little alone time with Alex?” Max shot back as he pulled into their driveway.

“I won’t lie. I am anxious about spending a whole week with him. I honestly can’t wait. I mean, this will be the first time where we’ll really just be free. We won’t have to be constantly looking over our shoulders, you know? We’ll be able to have a good time and not focus on worrying if Tess is going to intrude or break it up.”

“I know, Is, and soon we won’t have to worry about her.”

She nodded. “Do you ever feel weird about this, Max? I mean, we’re talking so casually about killing someone, like it’s of no great value. I never thought we’d behave like this. We never did, even back on Antar.”

“I know, Is, and I know it’s weird. But knowing what she has done to us here, the things she wants to do in the future, and really remembering what she did to us in the past…I think it would be irresponsible of us to leave her without any type of punishment. I mean, she is capable of doing nearly anything to get what she wants. We’ve all heard her plans. We have to do something.”

“I know,” Isabel sighed. “I just wonder if we can classify killing her as a punishment. That seems a little harsh, don’t you think?”

“No,” he admitted. “Not when I think about what she has done and what she is capable of doing to any of us at any minute.” He looked at his sister, knowing she wouldn’t be judging him for what he’d just said. He also knew there was something underneath this reluctance she’d suddenly found that she needed to talk about. “What’s up, Isabel? Why are you thinking like this?”

She looked at her brother seriously. “I don’t know. I just started thinking about this earlier when I realized we’d actually be killing her. And I do know that the punishment is worthy of the crime. It’s just—I can’t help thinking about what Michael went through after he killed Pierce. I just don’t want us to have to go through that…guilt or whatever it was. I don’t want us to be ashamed of ourselves or scared because we did the only thing we could do to protect ourselves, our futures, our friends and even our families. But I don’t see how to avoid it.”

“I can’t say we won’t go through that. I’d like to believe that we wouldn’t feel any guilt, that we’ll know we’re doing the right thing for all of us and the world, in a lot of ways. But just because we’re doing the right thing doesn’t mean there won’t be guilt,” he admitted. He felt like he was talking in circles. “I think the most important thing will be for us to just be there for each other. Michael wouldn’t talk to anyone about it last summer, not even Maria. Maybe that was his problem, he didn’t allow us to support him.” Max took the key from the ignition. “I mean, he saved all of our lives, and he felt like a criminal for that. If he’d given me the chance, I would have liked to thank him for it, not condemn him.”

Isabel nodded and changed the subject. She knew they would do what they needed to do, and she would never regret something that made her life free, that gave her the opportunity to know her family. “Are you ready for this?” She nodded toward the house.

“I think I can act suitably depressed about it,” he grinned.

She laughed. “Mom and Dad will probably be relieved to not have to hear the Counting Crows coming from your room, 24/7. No wonder they agreed so quickly.” Alex had told her how pleased her parents had been by his invitation, particularly for Max. Diane was apparently hoping that seeing some of the opportunities his future held would help Max find some motivation he’d been lacking lately.

“Ha ha ha.” Max shook his head. They walked into the house and immediately headed to the kitchen. It was just the natural progression of after-school. Immediately go to kitchen to find some form of snack food.

Diane Evans breezed into the kitchen just as Max finished pouring himself a glass of apple juice. “Kids! I thought I heard you guys get home.”

“Hey, Mom,” Isabel kissed her cheek. “What are you doing home?”

“Well, your Dad and I have something we need to talk to you two about—“

“Dad’s home?”

“Yeah. Why don’t you take your snacks into the study? He’s in there.”

Max picked up his juice and a package of Swiss Cake Rolls™ and went into the study. His father was sitting at the computer and he looked up and smiled at Max’s footsteps. “Hey, Dad.”

“Hi, Max. Where’re your mom and Isabel?”

“They’ll be here in a minute. I think Isabel was trying to find some non-fat food or something.” He shrugged. “I got out of there as soon as I could.”

Philip laughed. “Glad to see I’ve taught you something, son.”

Max grinned as his sister and mother walked in sharing a bag of baked potato chips. They shared the couch and kept handing the bag back and forth.

“So what’s up?”

“Well, we got called to your school today,” Philip started. Max and Isabel made a show out of looking at one another for a second even doing the silent eye communication that all siblings, alien or human, had when someone was in trouble and they didn’t know who before turning back to their parents and acting like nothing was wrong. “Now it wasn’t about anything bad—“

“Just the opposite,” Diane smiled. “The two of you have been chosen to participate in a week long recruitment trip at Covington University.”

“Covington?” Isabel said slowly. “They have one of the most impressive fine arts programs in the Southwest.”

“Yes, Covington,” Philip looked at his daughter. Fine arts? She wanted to major in fine arts? He was going to have to sit down with her soon and talk about her future. Had she considered anything else? Law perhaps? He knew she’d be a fine lawyer; he’d heard some of the fights that she and Max had had over the years. Her verbal skills were quite impressive, if he did say so himself. He figured it had to do with the fact that for the first 3 years after they’d been adopted, he would practice all his opening and closing arguments on her. She had always been such a responsive child…

Max and Isabel looked at their father. He’d been quiet for a few moments, and he looked like he was in his own little world. Diane walked over and sat on the side of her husband’s chair. She affectionately elbowed him when she didn’t even get a response. “Anyway,” she started, “you’ve both been invited to go to a recruitment week they’re doing at Covington. You’d live in the dorms, go to classes in fields you’re interested in, and meet professors. It seems they really are interested in the two of you going to school there in 2 years.” Diane tried to make that sound positive. She couldn’t believe that her babies were already getting ready for college. She was supposed to have them another year and a half, and here, it seemed like they were going to be leaving so soon. Part of her, the part that had wanted nothing but to protect them since the first moment she’d seen them, wanted to lock them in their rooms and never let them out. She wanted to cook weird dishes they’d never tell her they disliked. She wanted to clean up after them even though she complained about it every time she had to. She hurried back to finish the explanations that she and Philip had come up with that afternoon, waiting for their kids to come home. “Now you don’t have to go. We’ll certainly understand if you don’t want to, if you’re not interested. But we would like you to seriously think about it. This could be a great opportunity for you both, and we don’t want to see you miss out on it because you didn’t really think about it.”

Isabel spoke up almost immediately and enthusiastically. “Well, I want to go. I mean, this is an excellent opportunity and I think I need to take it.”

Philip, who had come out of his daze by this point, smiled. “I figured you’d say that, Izzy.”

Diane looked at her son. “Max, what do you think?”

He kind of shrugged. He could hear Liz in his head, teasing him because she knew how very much he wanted to go, and it was very hard not to smile whenever he heard her voice. “I don’t know. I mean, I honestly hadn’t even really thought that much about college yet. I figured all that would come up next year—“

“Come on, Max. This would be an opportunity to see what it’s really like!” Isabel exclaimed interrupting.

“Iz, don’t try to convince your brother. This is a decision he needs to make on his own,” Diane said.

“I know. It’s just hard to imagine me doing something as important as this without Max there,” she smiled sadly.

“Is—“ Max said slowly.

“But Mom is right. You need to make this decision for yourself, Max. I mean, I don’t want you to come with me and spend an entire week miserable.”

Max couldn’t think. How had he thought he could deny what he wanted more than anything with any sense of realism? He was no actor!

‘Baby, just rationalize. Make it seem like you’re taking the pros and the cons.’

‘Liz—‘

‘You can do it, Zan. I know you can. Just pretend it’s like the time when we were dating that I wanted that puppy. You acted pretty well right then, making me think I couldn’t have a puppy in the palace.’

Inwardly, Max smiled. That had been such a great trick to play on her. And then to see her fact light up when he’d given her Koko.

‘But don’t think about that right now. Think about ways to rationalize yourself into going to Covington.’

‘Like?’

‘Like you didn’t realize that it would be so competitive to get into college. Or maybe that you didn’t know there would be so many options. I don’t know. Just BS this.’

“Maybe I ought to go. I mean, I know I want to go to college. But I haven’t really thought about it. What if I’m really far behind? Maybe I need to see my options.” He knew he had to present the other side, too. “But what if I don’t know what I’m looking for. I mean, I could go and be really impressed by this place and decide to go there, and miss out on everything else. Or what if I found something---“

“Max,” Philip stopped his son, “let’s not overanalyze this. You aren’t a psychology student here, at least not yet.” He wondered how his son would do as a psych student. How odd…he’d have to always wonder if his son was analyzing him and diagnosing him with issues from his childhood that he’d never heard of. “Let’s talk about this, okay? It might be easier.” He looked at Diane. “Honestly, I’m seeing a lot of benefits to you guys going to this week. Not only would it expose you to a different world and let you see the opportunities you will have when you go to college, but maybe it will help you decide what you want to do. The professor we spoke to about this today, Dr. Schaffner, is a molecular biologist. He’s willing to take you into his labs so you can see what he really does, not just what you might experience in an introductory biology lab. Or he can introduce you to professors in political science or history or English, whatever you’re interested in.” He left fine arts off that list. Isabel would surely change her mind. “And you wouldn’t have to commit to Covington this week or ever. You would just be able to see what the university can give you. And next year, when you seriously start looking at colleges, you can see what they offer in compare to Covington. It might be good to have that starting point.”

“We don’t want to force you to go, Max, like I said earlier. But we would like you to know that we feel this is an excellent opportunity for you, and that if you take it, it might just change your life. I didn’t know where I wanted to go to college until I went to a recruitment weekend at the University of New Mexico. I saw how that school treated its students like family and how attentive the faculty was, and I knew I wanted to go there. I’d hate to think where I’d have gone had I not gone to that weekend.”

Max nodded. “I guess yeah, it would be a good idea. And I could stand to get out of Roswell for a few days,” he smiled.

Isabel smiled. “So you’re going to go?”

He nodded. “Sure. Maybe I’ll figure out what I want to do with my life.”

Philip smiled. “Or what you don’t want to do. Let’s keep your options open, Max.” He thought of his son as a counselor and smiled. That might be a little odd. But his son as a lawyer, well, that would be incredible. It could be a family practice!

Max and Isabel talked to their parents for a few more minutes before heading up to Max’s room.

“I think that was successful.” Isabel said.

Max smiled. “Now to just make it through this week before we leave.”

Oh, yeah, all italics mean the mental conversations between max/liz

<center>~*~Part 35~*~</center>

Wednesday night, Liz and Max were hidden from the rest of the world on her balcony. They’d just gotten back from a final planning meeting for their escape. Max was sitting on the lawn chair with Liz curled up in his lap. He ran his fingers through her hair, knowing she was over-thinking all this.

“Max?” She raised her head from his shoulder. “Do you think we’re going to be able to do this?’

“Of course I do, Liz,” he said confidently.

She sighed, knowing he was probably just patronizing her. But she needed it.

‘Stop assuming I’m patronizing you. I believe we will get through this because I believe in us. I believe in Michael and Maria and in Isabel and Alex. But most importantly, I believe in you and me, Asha.’ He wrapped his arms around her tighter.

She smiled. ‘I believe in us, too.’

They laid on the chaise for a few more minutes before Liz sat up breaking the silence. “When is your mother expecting you home?”

“Actually,” he suddenly sounded shy, “my mom thinks I’m spending the night at Michael’s.”

“Really?” She didn’t know what to say.

“Yeah.” He looked at her waiting for her to make the next move. He would do anything she wanted; all he wanted was to be beside her.

She stood up and reached for his hand. Then she made her way through her window. He waited on the other side. “Liz, what about—“

“They’re gone for the night, Max. Please come in.” She looked at him with all the love she felt for him in her eyes, and he couldn’t have said no if he wanted to.

He climbed through her window and just loved the immediate sense of Liz that flooded his system. It was incredible how much one room could so thoroughly represent someone. His eyes couldn’t help but go to her bed, neatly made with the quilt he knew her grandmother had made for her when she was little. His mind flipped through all the events he’d bookmarked in his mind that revolved around that bed. And despite all the things that had happened there, the pretend betrayal with Kyle, the first night he finally knew the truth…the only events he could think about were all the nights he’d snuck onto her balcony after he’d first saved her and just watched her sleep. It was those nights, when all he’d wanted to do was protect her that meant the most to him now, knowing that he’d always be able to do that.

“Liz—“ He didn’t know what he was going to say. He wanted her to know that nothing would happen that she didn’t want to happen. He didn’t expect anything from her tonight. All he wanted was to hold her while they slept and wake up with her still in his arms. He’d been dreaming about it for weeks, years, really, and those dreams had only become more intense and real since he’d recovered his memories of being Zan, since he could remember actually sleeping beside her every single night, being free to reach out and touch her naked skin…knowing that she would always be next to him.

Liz stood on her tiptoes and kissed him. She knew what he was thinking. She’d been having the same dreams. She knew that they couldn’t do anything tonight. She didn’t have any protection, and she wasn’t sure that now was the best time to ‘cement’, but she wanted to sleep beside him and just enjoy that. She needed some of his strength right now before they started their training. She needed his confidence. She just needed him.

‘Zan, do you remember the first night we ever slept in the same bed together?’

‘Of course”

‘Can we have that again? I want to wake up with you so much—‘

He interrupted her with a kiss. “Yes.”

She smiled up at him gratefully. She reached up and started unbuttoning his shirt. Max flashed to all the nights Asha helped him undress, and then he remembered all the times he returned the favor and put his hands in motion against the buttons on the little red cardigan he loved so well.

They climbed into bed together, moving as close to one another in the center of the bed. Liz was wearing just her panties and a tank top while Max was only in his boxers. He wrapped his arm around her waist and unconsciously moved the material of the shirt up so he could touch her bare skin. Finally, he felt completely at home again. Liz laid her hand on top of Max’s and they both felt the familiar sleeping pattern. This was how they had always slept back on Antar, curled up together as if nothing could break them apart.

‘Good night, love,’ Zan whispered before he fell into a deep sleep.

Liz took advantage of his warmth and spent a few more moments just enjoying this experience for what it was and not as a function of memory. Then she too fell asleep.

AN: Okay...so this is sooo not my best work but I think between finals and partying a bit too much, my creativity has just been zapped. :) But I wanted to post something that will hopefully spark something for me to write now. :)

Thanks for reading, and all your happy replies to my note. :)

<center>~*~Part 36~*~</center>

Friday morning, Isabel and Max walked into school together. Michael had already left for the cabin, and Alex was pulling the van with Liz in the backseat up to the front. The plan was that Max and Isabel would meet him in the principal’s office at 8 to leave. They both just hoped that they could avoid seeing Tess; it had become their mission in the past few days to see her as little as possible.

Of course, missions never did work out well when they involved Tess.

“Max! Max!” She yelled as she followed them through the halls.

“Do we have to turn around?” Max whispered to Isabel. She smiled, and then Tess had her hands on his arm and was turning him toward her.

“Max, there you are! I’ve been looking for you all week!”

He tried to smile. “Hi, Tess. I didn’t know you were looking for me.”

“Well, of course, I am. I mean, we really need to start working on your powers again. What about Rath and Lonnie? We have to be ready to protect ourselves from them.”

“Right, Tess,” Max said awkwardly. He looked at Isabel. “It’s just that our parents have signed us up for that college week thing.”

“At Covington? The one Liz is going to?” She did her best to not sound angry, but this was just not a good thing. Max and Liz alone for a week at a college? Too many things could happen there, without her there to stop it.

He tried to play innocent. “Yeah, it’s at Covington. I didn’t know Liz was going—“

Determinedly, Tess shook her head. “Can you get out of it, Max? I really think we need to work on your powers. We never know when someone might come, especially now. They know where we are and that we have the granolith. That’s what they want.”

“I know that, Tess, but I can’t get out of this week. My parents are really excited by it. They think it’s a great opportunity for us. Isabel and I both have to go—“

She started plotting. “Well, then I can mindwarp them into thinking they’d invited me, too. Then we can work on our powers there.”

Max barely managed to bite his tongue before the “NO!” that was his natural reaction to that came out. He looked at Isabel desperately.

“Tess, we can’t do that. It wouldn’t be right. This college is sincerely interested in us, just as students. We can’t use them like that. Besides, what about the Sheriff and Kyle? They’d know you were missing…and you can’t mindwarp them.” Isabel said pointedly. She knew her reasons didn’t mean anything to a moral-less person like Tess. She was such a moral-less tramp!

“I could mindwarp them—“ Tess proved her lack of integrity.

“You can’t mindwarp the Sheriff and Kyle, Tess. They’re our friends; that wouldn’t be right.” Max said. “Listen, we’ll take care of this next week, ok? Isabel and I will try to practice our powers while we’re gone…and we’ll come back focused. And our parents will get off our backs about all this future stuff so we can train.”

Tess looked at him. She didn’t want to sound desperate, but she was starting to get worried. She’d thought that the trick with ‘future Max’ would have been enough to keep Max and Liz apart, but lately… they were acting just like they used to. Her plan with Khivar would never work if she didn’t make it happen soon. “Max—“

“We’ve got to go, Max,” Isabel said. “Sorry, Tess. There’s no way around this. We’ll see you in a week.” She led Max into the office.

“Thanks, Is,” he said. “I can’t seem to speak to her without getting extremely angry.”

“None of us can,” she admitted. “But just think, we’ll have a whole week without her.”

Max nodded. They’d have a week without her to train, and then—well, the inevitable would have to happen.

Meanwhile,

Liz stretched out a little as she laid on the backseat in the van. She was actually really relieved that she wasn’t in the school this morning to see what was going on. Feeling Max’s emotions was enough. He’d obviously seen Tess. She could tell just by the complete iciness that had run through him. She vowed to make it up to him when she saw him.

At about 10 after 8, the van door opened. Liz waited, still lying down but she did move her legs off the seat so that Max would have a place to sit. She smiled when she saw his face. He looked so relieved to just be sitting next to her. She curled around so that her head was in his lap.

“Hi,” she whispered.

“Hi.”

“You okay?”

He nodded. “I am now.”

She smiled and heard Alex and Isabel’s doors slam.

“Let’s get out of here, Alex,” she said toward the front of the van.

He laughed and started to drive away.

Max arranged he and Liz on the back seat of the van so that she was essentially lying on top of him. It was so comforting to them that they fell asleep, just giving each other strength.

In the front seats, Alex and Isabel were holding hands.

“You know,” she smiled, “ I can’t wait till we see Michael.”

“Why?”

“I want him to turn you back into you. I miss your face, Alex.” She grinned.

He laughed. “I never thought anyone would ever say that about me.” She started to correct his lack of esteem. “Thank you, Isabel.”

She smiled. She hadn’t felt so free to be happy since Tess had come to town. She was able to embrace her humanity just as much as she was able to embrace all these new alien feelings in her. “Thank you, Alex.” She figured he’d know what she meant it for.

He did.

Part 37

<center>~*~Part 37~*~</center>

Michael was sitting on the front steps to the cabin when the rest of the group got there. He looked calm, reading some book as he leaned back against an imaginary wall. Liz smiled and wished that Maria could see him like this—so peaceful. Hopefully, once they were done with all this training and what they had to do, she’d be able to.

He looked up as the van stopped. “Hey, guys,” he walked over to the driver’s window. “How was the trip?” He grinned. “Some of those curves were killer on my bike.”

Alex smiled. “There were minutes there were I wasn’t sure a van was suited for traveling those roads, but no one else seemed to notice.” He laughed remembering his initial idea to warn Max and Liz to buckle up; he hadn’t been able to wake them up.

“I had total faith in you, Alex,” Isabel squeezed his hand.

“There were curves?” Liz asked groggily. What had she slept through?

Michael helped to unload the luggage. “Everything was okay at school then? No one caught on?” They all knew he meant Tess and just didn’t want to mention her by name.

“She tried to join us,” Max said, “but thankfully, Isabel feels no need for tact.”

She laughed. “There was no way I would let her ruin our week here. We need this, guys. Everyone needs this.”

Michael walked into the cabin right after Liz. “Maria’s okay, right?”

“She’s fine, Michael. She can handle this.”

<center>***</center>

<i>Meanwhile, back at the CrashDown,</I>

Maria looked at the clock on the wall. It was 3:25. 5 more minutes and Tess would be showing up for her first shift. She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out something she’d just recently discovered to relieve stress. She wasn’t proud of herself but she’d stolen a bandana from Michael’s clean laundry basket. It smelled so much like him, and if she was going to have to be separated from him for the next week so he could help save the world, she wanted something of his to make her smile. She rationalized that it helped her to relax, but really, it just reminded her of what was really important. It reminded her that she could make it through a week of seeing Tess every single day with no one in between them to distract her.

Mr. Parker walked over to Maria. “I can’t believe Lizzie’s gone off to college already.”

“It’s only for a week, Mr. P.”

“I know, but it still seems like it’s too soon. She’s my—“ He stopped himself from getting too sentimental. “Anyway, thank you for training Tess today. She is going to be such a lifesaver with Liz and Michael gone.”

“Michael’s gone?” She feigned innocence. “Where did he go?”

“I don’t know. He called in this morning before school and said he needed to be off this week to do research on Czechoslovakians. I guess he has a big project in his geography course or something.”

Maria forced herself to not even break a smile. “I guess so. Man, who’s covering his shifts?”

“Jose will take some, and I hired a new guy today for the day shift mostly, but he said he’d take some of Michael’s shifts, too.”

“Who is it?”

“I don’t think you’ll know him. He’s new to Roswell, but he’s had a lot of experience in restaurants. His name’s Dillon Hawkins. He’s in the kitchen right now.”

Maria nodded, instantly wary of any new person. “I guess I’ll go introduce myself and wait for Tess.”

“Thanks again, Maria.” Mr. Parker walked over to the cash register to check on some receipts.

Maria walked into the break room and started into the kitchen.

“Nasedo, you shouldn’t be here, not this close!”

“I had to see what you were up to, didn’t I, Tess? Our plan needs to have some success soon or I’m not sure how much longer Khivar—“

“There will be success. I’m getting closer to them—“

“Then where are Zan and Vilandra today?”

“They had this school thing. They couldn’t get out of it.”

“You should be there with them, Tess.”

“I wish I could be, Nasedo. There was just no way I could get involved. The university was specific about only Max, Isabel, and Liz. I wanted to mindwarp them, but Max insisted we couldn’t. His loyalty to the humans won’t let him ‘hurt’ them.”

“You should be there. His loyalty is secondary to our mission.”

“He comes back on Sunday. I won’t let Max out of my sight after that, not until our plan is successful.”

“I’m more worried about what will happen this week, Tess. You’ve allowed Max and Liz to be at a university hundreds of miles away from all this together without anyone to keep them apart—“

“Isabel is there to—“

“Isabel won’t stop her brother. By the time they come back, any chance we might have had of getting the heir and getting home might be gone.” He warned.

Maria backed away from the kitchen door. Oh my God, she thought. Nasedo was there! She would have to work with him all week, this close, alone? What in the world would happen? How could she—Oh my God!

She pulled the bandana from her pocket again and hurried into the dining room. Oh my God.

<center>~*~Part 38~*~</center>

Max, Liz, Isabel, and Michael sat in a diamond-shaped position in the living room of the cabin. Their hands were held out to just touch, palm to palm, with one another. All their eyes were closed, and Alex was left on his own to watch the 4 of them and wonder what was happening between them.

Inside the connection, Max and Liz immediately formed their connection that was so familiar to them. Then they reached out to Michael and Isabel respectively, trying to bring them into their connection and make their personal connection something broader, something more expansive, something that could change the world.

Liz reached Isabel first. She smiled.

“Wow, so this is what it feels like for you and Max?” Isabel was amazed at the total love and compassion she felt within their connection. In a lot of ways, it went beyond even that…it became some sort of lifeline that could never be severed.

“Yeah.” Liz said simply.

“Wow.”

“I’m going to bring you into the connection with me. Just the 2 of us. And then we’ll join with Max and then you and he can make a connection together.”

“Has Michael connected with Max yet?”

“I don’t think so,” Liz frowned. “He will soon, though, I’m sure.” She focused all her energy on Isabel and they met each other’s eyes without a moment’s hesitation between them. They were ready to be as honest as they could with each other.

Liz was nearly overwhelmed at the depth of this ice princess’ feelings. She could understand how she felt the day they emerged from their pods right up to moments before when she looked at Alex. Everything Isabel was was about love and family. It was all she wanted. Liz knew Isabel’s terror at being Vilandra. She understood the relief of finding out the truth, and she felt the sharpness of Tess’ betrayal. Liz saw Isabel for the first time without the world’s blinders on, and she was amazed at the beauty before her.

And Liz opened herself up to Isabel. Isabel was shocked by the multitude of layers there were to this woman who for so long she’d barely given a second glance. This was a woman who could be a true friend to her, someone who completely understood, a sister. There didn’t need to be anything hidden, no playing. This was reality and Isabel was eager to embrace it.

Liz smiled at Isabel. “We’re connected.”

Isabel nodded knowing the truth before Liz had even said it. She was truly connected to another person, in a way that most people wouldn’t—couldn’t—understand. And she was glad the first person she’d connected to was Liz. Before all this had happened, she’d thought they had nothing in common, and now she was seeing just how similar they really were.

“Okay, I think you need to connect with Max next. He’s still having some problems with Michael.”

Isabel nodded with a smile. She’d known that was what Liz was thinking. “We’re really going to have to work on these connections and how to censor them, you know? I mean, I’m not sure I’m ready for my brother to know my every thought about my boyfriend.”

Liz laughed. “I think the same would be true for him.” She reached out to Max and pulled him into her connection with Isabel. “I think it’s time you and your sister connect, Max.”

“Michael is having a lot of trouble doing this, Liz. Can you—“

“I think I can help him,” she smiled. “After all, didn’t we decide like yesterday that my special power was making connections?” She couldn’t help teasing him. He squeezed her waist and she laughed. Even their physical connection transcended this connection.

Liz reached out to find Michael. She could feel his fear; he felt so alone and afraid that he wouldn’t be able to do this. He didn’t know how to let go of the barriers he’d put up around himself not at this deep a level. “Michael.”

He looked up at Liz. “I—“

“I know,” she said simply. She didn’t want to make him feel bad for how he felt; this was a huge change to expect in so short a time. “Do you want to do this?” She asked gently. Maybe he wasn’t ready for this.

“I do, Liz. I just don’t know how. I mean, for so long, I have hidden behind these barriers that no one has gotten across, not even Maria who has gotten across more than anyone else, even Max and Isabel. I just don’t know how to let go of them. What am I without them? How can I do my job when I don’t have my defenses up?”

“Michael, maybe you’ve outgrown them, the defenses, I mean. You don’t need that solitary attitude anymore; you’ve got all of us to be here for you. We can help you build new defenses that will really be able to help us without hurting you.” She stepped closer to him. “I honestly don’t know that much about your life other than what you’ve let slip in the heat of the moment in the past year of running and hiding and searching. I do know that life has tried again and again to beat you up, and you’ve never let it, Michael. You’ve always adapted to what you had to do, found what you needed inside yourself to protect yourself. Well, now it’s time to try something new. It’s time to look outside yourself for what you want…what you need. We’re all here for you, and we are ready to help you.”

“What about Maria?” His voice was barely more than a whisper.

“What about her? Of course she’d be here to help if she could. She is willing to do anything you want to if you’d let her help you.” She felt a chord of worry…of sorrow…of difference slide through Michael. “She’s not going to be upset that you let your walls slide without her here, Michael. If anything, she’s going to be excited that you’ve finally done it. She’s going to love any changes this brings about and if it doesn’t, well, she’ll still love you. And maybe you’ll be more prepared to love her back, the way you want to.”

Michael looked her in the eye and she could see a difference in him. “Okay, let’s try this.”

Liz smiled and reached out to him with her mind. She was overwhelmed by the emotions that were suddenly rolling off Michael. She’d never imagined that behind those walls something so intensely beautiful was hidden. “Michael,” she whispered. She could feel the tears spring to her eyes.

Michael’s voice was hoarse and filled with emotions. “Liz?”

“Thank you. You are—“ she couldn’t go on.

Michael moved on an impulse he’d learned to ignore years ago and hugged her. “Thank you.”

She smiled as she got used to his emotions. “Maria is going to love this!”

“I can connect with her like this?”

“If you really want to, yes. We can make that happen, Michael.” He didn’t say anything but his mind was swirling with the idea. Liz knew he would. “Are you ready to try to connect with Max and Isabel?”

He nodded. “This feeling, Liz, it’s incredible. I don’t think I could hide this anymore.”

“You don’t have to. In fact, I’m pretty sure if you do, I’d have to hurt you,” she teased. She felt her mind reach out to Max and Isabel who were waiting. They’d connected and now they were teasing each other about all the things they finally knew about each other. The siblings couldn’t believe how close they had become.

Both of them smiled, feeling Michael join their connection. Isabel spoke first. “I want to connect to Michael first.”

He nodded and Isabel met Michael’s eyes.

Liz watched them form their connection and knew it’d been made when Isabel had a few tears streaming down her cheeks. And Michael, in a perfectly intuitive move, hugged her.

Max looked at Liz. “How did you do it?”

“I didn’t. Michael chose this,” she smiled. “And Max…” she didn’t know how to finish her statement. And in some ways, she didn’t want to warn him. After all the brotherly fighting they’d done in the past year, he should feel the wave of love Michael felt for him for himself.

Isabel and Michael broke apart several minutes later and Isabel immediately reached up and hugged him. “Thank you, Michael.”

Max and Michael stood for a second, just staring at each other. “I guess this leaves us.” Max said.

“Yeah.”

They sat down and stared into each other’s eyes. It was like they were meditating.

“How will we know if they’ve connected?” Isabel whispered.

“We’ll know,” Liz said.

They watched the 2 men for a few more seconds and then Max took a huge gulp of air.

“They’re connected.”

“Max,” Michael whispered.

“Michael, my God, you’ve been keeping all this bottled up for so long. I’m sorry. I should have given you the opportunity to let this out.” Max was humbled feeling the love and loyalty in his brother.

“Max, I wasn’t ready to let go before this. I—“

“Thank you. I don’t say this enough, but Michael, you are a brother to me. The only brother I could ever imagine having, and I don’t think any of us have shown that—“

“Max, you took me into your family. I’ve eaten more dinners at your house in one year than I ever ate living with Hank or any other foster parent.”

“You put up with Hank so you wouldn’t have to leave us,” he said. He’d never known that Michael had had the opportunity to leave Hank’s foster home, that people from the foster care system had nearly begged him to over the years. But he’d always resisted, he’d always insisted that he had to stay put. He’d put himself in danger for years all because eof his loyalty to something they didn’t even understand.

“I had to stay close to you. I’ve always known that.”

“Thank you, Michael.”

“You’re my brother.” Michael said simply.

They broke out of their direct connection and looked at Liz and Isabel.

“What now?” Isabel asked.

“I think now we all connect—“

“We have.”

“Not together,” Liz said. “We’re here to learn how to work together, right? Well, now we can, but we need to work as a group. We need the complete connection because it’s how we’ll be fighting—together, but as different parts. Did that make sense?”

“No, but 24 hours ago, none of this would have to me,” Michael teased. “What do we do?”

“The same way we made our initial connections: concentrate on all of us this time, though. And just reach out to each other.” Liz directed as she started to reach out to all of them.

They glided into the connection slowly but confidently. The 4 of them were now united; nothing could change that.

Initially there was a fast jumble of thoughts, emotions and memories running through the connection. They were overwhelmed. Liz worked through it first. She focused directly on the others, not allowing her emotional baggage or anyone else’s to infiltrate her intentions.

“Can you hear me?” She asked.

Slowly, one by one the others met her eyes as they pushed past the filler to the core of the connection.

And Alex was in awe when after an hour and a half of the meditation pose, his friends’ hands started glowing.

AN: Finally! Hot damn, i have finally been able to sit at my comptuer and run word enough for it to accept the rest of this part that i have been working on for far too long...and i'm sooooo sorry this took so damn long. I hope you enjoy this part, it feels very very much like transition which i hate and am honestly afraid of which does happily mean that things should start picking up again, provided i have time to write...but seeing as how one of my jobs is babysitting, i think i should... (long story) ok. i'm going to just start procrastinating this and post.
thank you all for reading this adn sticking w/ a story that it sometiems looked like i'd forgotten.

<center>~*~Part 39~*~</center>

There was complete silence within the connection; each member of it was merely basking in the peace and knowledge it held. They knew everything about each other, and there was complete acceptance of it. Nothing was hidden or lied about. It was purity.

“What does this connection allow us to do?” Michael finally asked. “I mean, I know this is incredible, but how does this help us get rid of Tess and Nasedo?”

Liz nodded, understanding where Michael was coming from. “Defensively?” He nodded. “Right now, we are all completely open to each other and whatever we’re capable of. Michael, you’ve been able to heal scratches, but nothing bigger because you didn’t know how. Similarly, Max can’t fight against people as well as you can. Thanks to this connection, I think we should be able to learn how to do things that we’re not naturally capable of.”

“So I’ll be able to heal and blast people?” Isabel asked.

“I think so.”

“Can we test this?” Max asked.

“I think the most physical test can be done with Michael’s powers,” Liz said.

“How do we access them?”

“Michael, I need you to think about what you think about right before you blast something or someone.”

“There’s not a really specific trigger though, Liz. I mean, we’re in danger; I do what I can. And when you think about it, am I the best one to really try this with? I mean, I don’t have complete control of my powers. I’m usually just as shocked as anyone that they work.”

“Have you tried to use your powers since you connected to the granolith?”

“No.”

“When you relived Rath’s life, did you learn anything about how he used his powers?”

“They were instinctive to him. He just knew them.”

“Well, I think that you just know yours now, too,” Liz said. “I think the granolith helped us like that, as well. I think once we became aware of who we really were back on Antar, our abilities became more innate, more a part of us that we can manipulate.”

Michael took a minute to think about it all. “Okay, so what do I have to do?”

“Think about your powers. How do you use them?”

Michael nodded and thought about it. Instantly, Max, Isabel, and Liz were aware of the same thoughts in their heads. Michael showed them how to access that part of their minds.

Max looked at Michael. “Wow.” He’d never imagined the ability to control blasts would be so…energizing.

“And now we test it?” Isabel asked.

“Right. We break the connection and try it out,” Liz smiled.

“How hard will it be for us to reform this connection?” Michael asked. “Are we going to have to go through that whole process every time?”

Liz spoke again. “I don’t think so. I think that once we create the connection, it’s always there. It’s just the matter of us accessing it.”

“For Liz and I, the connection is always there. We just never really actively tried to connect it. We were always too—focused on what Tess said.” Liz wondered how much of Max’s words were true; had they missed out on this incredible connection for so long because they didn’t listen to their hearts? Her grandmother was so right.

Michael nodded. “Then I guess we go practice now.”

“How do we sever the connection? Do we just think of something else? Or do we focus on separating?” Isabel asked.

“Just focus on separating, being in your own mind again,” Max said. “At the same time, you should still feel the buzz in the back of your head, letting you know that the rest of us are still here.”

Isabel was the first to break from the connection. Liz followed, loving that she could really feel Max still. Max and Michael came out of it together. Isabel could feel Michael’s initial resistance to leaving the connection turn into relief that he could still feel them.

Alex was sitting there watching them, in awe at the way they looked. Was it possible for them to look more mature after connecting for like 2 hours? It didn’t make sense, but that was what he saw. They looked more prepared for…everything. “Are you okay?” He asked, hoping they would answer him and not completely block him out.

Isabel smiled. “Better than okay.”

“It worked?” He asked anxiously, looking at all of them.

“We’re about to see.”

The group went outside with Alex trailing behind more curious than he could ever have imagined. What did this mean? What was going to happen? Had they like changed or something? Were they combinations of each other now? Did connecting mean they would always be connected from now on? Would they constantly be like reading each other’s minds—making communicating with them embarrassing and complicated, full of inside jokes? Would this change his relationship with Isabel? Or Liz?

Once they were outside the cabin, Michael started surveying the terrain around them. He suddenly felt more centered in his powers than he ever had before. He saw a rock the size of his fist about 10 feet away. He held out his hand to it, feeling his powers swell in him.

The others watched in amazement as the rock seemingly imploded.

Alex looked at him. “Michael, how—wow, I mean, oh my God, your powers—“ He looked at the others. “Can you all do that?”

Isabel raised her hand at a pile of leaves about 5 feet away. Seconds later, leaves were flying everywhere.

“Oh my God!” Isabel exclaimed.

Alex looked at his girlfriend in a whole new light. He watched in awe as his best friend did things he’d never have had imagined a year ago. Max went last. He chose to make a rock explode rather than implode.

Max, Michael, Isabel, and Liz looked at each other with accomplishment written all over their faces. The connection had worked!

“What does this mean?” Alex’s voice sounded more worried than he wanted to. He’d wanted to sound all powerful or sure or aware.

Isabel walked over to Alex and squeezed his hand, understanding his nervousness. “This means that given a little more practice time, Tess is history.”

Meanwhile back at the CrashDown,

After hearing Tess and Nasedo in the kitchen, Maria dashed back to the breakroom. She opened her locker and pulled out the cell phone her over-suspicious mother had insisted she get. She prayed Liz had her cell on.

Ring!

She cringed each time it rang until it went to Liz’s voicemail.

“Liz, it’s me! I don’t know when you’ll get this but like the minute you do, you’d better call me! We have a little problem with—“she looked around to make sure no one was there, “Tess and her evil plan. Call me!” She put her phone in the pocket of her apron and pulled Michael’s bandana out of her pocket. She would need all the strength she’d need to get through this day.

AN: Well, I finally got this finished, well, to the point i can almost be happy with it. :) I'm so sorry this took so long. I can say that in the time since i last posted, i've had a mini-breakdown, lost some illusions, found some true friends, decided i want to change careers, celebrated a birthday with my mom, watched my roommate get drunk (on 3 smirnoff ices!), and restrained 2 teenage boys who thought they were invincible. :) I'm hoping this transition part will move quickly, but I"m just having some problems getting it. This part is just what came out when i finally put aside all the notes and thoughts and ideas and really wrote.

i hope you enjoy it, and any ideas/thoughts/comments/criticisms will be appreciatively listened to. :) (that means i am really really confused as to the next part still...so please forgive my writing.)

:)

<center>~*~Part 40~*~</center>

They spent the rest of the afternoon working on their new powers. Each time they worked on blasting, it became easier to do and they learned more about how to reach through the connection for what they needed to learn from each other.

“Should we start working on healing?” Max asked. He was the most obviously excited about his new abilities. He felt like everything was coming together. He would finally have what it took to do his job, to take care of Liz—

‘I can take care of myself, Max.’

‘I know, Liz. It’s just—I can—“

‘What my brother is trying to say, Liz, is that these new abilities fulfill the control freak inside of him that believes he always has to be involved and is expected to be the hero.’

Max glared at his sister for a minute. “I just don’t want to lose this momentum.”

“We still have to take breaks, Max. And besides, it’s getting late,” Isabel pointed out. “Maybe we could just try dream-walking tonight instead?”

“Yeah, I think we need a break. I mean, come on. We’ve been working on this for hours, and I just really think we need to eat.” Michael smiled. “I mean, I want a steak. And besides, maybe we ought to check in with Maria, make sure she’s okay.” He couldn’t believe how honest and open he had just been about Maria. That statement had surely revealed his feelings to them, even though they had already known.

Max nodded. Now that Michael had mentioned it, he was getting kind of hungry as well.

Liz took Max’s hand. “Michael’s right. A steak does sound good right about now.” She grinned.

“Do we even have any groceries out here?” Alex asked. He was fully prepared to make a grocery run with Isabel if anyone asked.

“No, but there’s a store about 10 minutes away from here.” Michael said. “I noticed it on my way in.”

Alex nodded. “That’s right. So who wants to go?” he wondered idly if Isabel would be able to read his mind and suggest them.

“Liz, why don’t you and I go?” Isabel suggested. “Because we are obviously smarter at the grocery store than these guys. They’d come back and we’d be eating potato chips and cokes all week.”

Alex started praying that Liz, his wonderful, wise best friend, would know how much he wanted to go and take pity on him, but he heard her laughing, “Good point. Let me just grab my purse.” Alex sat down on the porch. Apparently mind-reading humans wasn’t one of their powers.

The 3 men watched as Liz and Isabel climbed into the van and drove away. Michael sighed. “I guess this means we’ll have salads to go
with our steaks?” He said optimistically.

Liz drove to the grocery store, finally noticing all the curves it took to get to the cabin. “How did Max and I sleep through this?”

Isabel laughed. “I’m sure you had other things on your mind.”

They made it to the store safely and Isabel grabbed a cart to put their food in. They were walking around the produce department picking up various vegetables. Liz laughed, thinking of Michael’s reaction to a big juicy steak w/ a side of steamed broccoli and carrots.

“Liz, did you bring your cell phone with you? We probably ought to check in with Maria. God only knows what she’s going through with Tess.” Isabel smiled. This would have been the time in the past for her to make comments about Maria’s flakiness. She didn’t feel any desire to do so now. She knew how strong her friend was. She smiled again, realizing she had just thought that so naturally.

“I didn’t bring it. I’ll check when we get back.” She put 2 heads of lettuce in their cart and they made their way towards the fresh meat counter. While they waited for their steaks, Liz turned to Isabel. “You know, we’ve never really talked about this, Is, but do you remember how close we used to be?”

She nodded eagerly. “Of course I do, Liz. I miss that so much.” She hurried to amend what she’d said. When had she become so open in the middle of a grocery store? “For so long, it was like I had no one I could really talk to. I always missed what you and I used to have-the sisterhood. I needed that.”

“We’ve got it again, Vi. Me and you and Maria. We’re the closest things to sisters we’ll ever have.”

Isabel nodded, relieved that for the first time in her life she could really accept that relationship from someone else. She smiled. “So sis, what’s the deal with you and my brother?”

Liz laughed. “I think you already know that.”

“Well, yeah, but…I mean, now that you remember EVERYTHING, how hard is it to not—“

Liz turned pink immediately understanding what Isabel was asking. “Isabel!” She could not believe that Max’s sister had just asked that question.

“Well—you know, I mean, I can remember everything about my past life with Michael, and even though I feel absolutely nothing for him, I can’t help but want the feelings he invoked in me again.”

“With Alex?” Liz squealed. All of Alex’s dreams were coming true!

“Well—“ It was Isabel’s turn to turn pink. “Anyway, I figure you remember everything, too, and the difference is that you are in love with Max. So how hard is it? To resist, I mean?”

Liz turned red. “I don’t know how to describe it, Is. It’s tough. I mean, I can remember our wedding night and all the other nights so clearly. And now I have to live with stopping—“

“Liz, you know you actually don’t have to live with that, right?”

She nodded, still not believing she was having this conversation with Isabel. She hoped Max wasn’t paying attention to her thoughts right now. “I know, and honestly, I don’t want to. And neither does Max.”

“Duh.”

“But we don't’ want our first time—in this life anyway—to be like this unmemorable thing.”

“Liz, I hardly think that would happen. I mean, it’s the two of you; it’s going to be memorable.”

“Oh, I know that.” She smiled. She’d long since passed her embarrassment threshold and realized that it didn’t matter. IT wasn’t like she had anything to hide from Isabel. “It’s just that we don’t want to be like hiding from people. You know, always worried our parents might catch us or whatever. Not for our first time.”

Isabel smiled. “Well, Liz, um, you wouldn’t have to worry about it now.”

Liz stared at her as they walked through the store for a second. Of course she knew that. It was driving her crazy. She and Max hadn’t talked about what was going to happen yet, and she couldn’t help but wonder if now was the best time. There was so much going on, but at the same time…

Meanwhile, back at the cabin, Max, Michael, and Alex were sitting on the porch staring at the destruction their blasts had caused.

“So you know, we never really discussed what the sleeping arrangement for the next week is,” Michael said.

Max lifted his head at that. There were 3 bedrooms here. How would they split it up? He knew who he’d like to sleep with, but he wasn’t sure how to bring that up. He didn’t want to make anyone else uncomfortable.

“Because I’d like to claim a private room, if that’s okay,” Michael said quickly.

“So then we have 2 left,” Alex said. He knew what he was hoping for. And he didn’t even think anything was going to happen, he highly doubted it would. But the idea of being in the same room all night with Isabel, in the same bed, it just thrilled him. Those nights at the podchamber had been wonderful but there was a whole level of comfort missing. To be able to just hold her all night, in a bed, would be amazing.

Max didn’t know what to say. He wanted to spend the nights with Liz, alone, more than he could say. He needed to be with her, just holding her, anything. But if he chose that, that would leave Alex in a room with Isabel—his sister, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to have to deal with the mental pictures of what might be happening in that room. She was his sister after all. Brothers weren’t supposed to know that kind of stuff.

Alex and Max looked at each other.

“I guess we can just let the girls decide, right?” Alex suggested. That seemed like the easiest way to get around this whole thing. Let Isabel be in charge of deciding where and who she wanted to sleep with.

Max nodded. “Good idea.” That took the pressure off him. He just hoped his sister made the right decision.

AN: Finally!

<center>~*~Part 41~*~</center>

Liz and Isabel made it back to the cabin without incident. They were perfectly happy, singing along to the radio, sharing old memories. They returned to find all 3 boys sitting on the front porch of the cabin in silence. Max and Alex immediately stood up to help with the grocery bags.

Liz smiled and kissed him. “What were you guys doing just sitting there? Surely you haven’t already run out of things to talk about?”

He grinned. ‘We were talking about sleeping arrangements.’ He focused on sending his thoughts only to Liz.

‘Anything I should know?’

‘Well, Michael has a room to himself.’

‘And who gets to share?’
She could feel Max’s embarrassment.

‘Well, we kind of decided you and Isabel should decide that.’

Liz laughed. ‘Max—‘

‘Asha, there are just some things a brother never-ever wants to think about.’
He reached over and grabbed her hand. ‘At the same time,’ his tone changed, ‘the idea of being separated from you when we’re finally completely free…depresses me more than I can say.’

She kissed him. ‘We’ll figure something out, Max.’

Max picked up the last 2 big bags of food and carried them into the cabin. Liz looked over at Isabel and nodded. Things were going just like they’d figured they would. It was good to know that the boys were so predictable.

Michael used his powers to start up the grill and started cooking the steaks while Liz made a big salad. Max sat at the kitchen table, just watching Liz, occasionally making little comments about trivial things, like school or work. Isabel walked over to him and whispered,

“Hey, Max, let’s go have a talk on the porch.”

Max followed his sister outside and sat down on the steps next to her. “What’s up?”

“Max,” she paused. She could not believe she was about to have this conversation with her brother!

“Isabel?”

“I-uh wanted to talk to you for a second.”

“About?”

“You know, there are about 6 conversations a girl never really wants to have with her brother—“

Max suddenly knew where this conversation was going, and he definitely didn’t want her to be uncomfortable about it. He didn’t even want to have it! “Isabel—“

“Just listen to me, Max.” She said firmly even though she could now feel his discomfort. “I don’t even want to think about this, but I think you and Liz ought to share a room up here.”

“Isabel—“ He wasn’t sure what he was going to say. He thought he ought to protest this decision, for some reason….

“No, I mean, you two should share. It’s not fair to keep you apart, not after all you’ve been through. And as siblings, I don’t even want to think about anything that might happen!” She turned pink.

“Isabel!” Max’s cheeks were red.

She stood up desperate to get out of the conversation. “Lets just agree on the sleeping arrangements. You and Liz in one room. Agreed?”

Max nodded, unable to say anything else.

“Good.” Isabel walked into the kitchen and smiled, nodding to Liz. Everything had really gone just as they’d planned; it was uncanny.

Liz smiled and continued chopping up carrots for the salad.

Max walked into the kitchen a few minutes later and walked up directly behind Liz. He put his hands on her waist. She smiled at the level of familiarity. It was so rare that they were able to be this comfortable together, even before Tess had gotten into their lives there had always been something to stop them from just being together. Soon, there would be nothing to keep them apart.

“What’s up?” She turned her head to kiss him.

“Nothing.”

“What did Isabel want?”

He kissed the base of her neck.

“Do I get to know what was discussed?”

‘You’d better not steal the covers tonight.’

Liz turned around and threw her arms around Max’s shoulders. “Yay,” she squealed.

Max smiled. “I figured you’d be happy about that.”

“Thank you, Max.”

“Thank Isabel. I didn’t make the decision.” He sighed. “And I really do not want to think about what the sleeping arrangements mean.”

She tried her best not to laugh. “I understand.”

By the time dinner was ready half an hour later, Max had resolved just not to think about where his sister slept that night. All that mattered was that he was sleeping in the same room with Liz.

Isabel had decorated the table giving it her traditional pizzazz and when they sat down together, Liz was amazed that it had ever looked at all like just an old wooden table in a cabin in the woods. She told Isabel so and had to laugh at the blush that instantly hit Isabel’s cheeks. They had a pleasant dinner, talking about everything: the goals they had now that they were aware of so much and the past they now completely remembered.

Alex was amazed that he didn’t feel at all left out because when they told the story of the dog Zan had bought for Asha, he was laughing harder than anyone. It all felt so real to him, like he could almost remember it too, just from hearing them talk about it.

Isabel giggled. “Talla was so cute, though. We had to forgive her for anything.”

Liz nodded. “Even when she tore my favorite white dress, I couldn’t yell at her. She was the cutest thing ever, and the best alarm clock I ever had.” She turned to Max. “Will you buy me a new one?”

Max laughed, but the look in his eyes said he would do anything she wanted.

“I’m sure Jeff and Nancy will love that,” Alex laughed at the very image of a puppy in the Crashdown.

The only person who didn’t get involved in the jovial conversation was Michael who had been sitting rather quietly all evening. Finally, he had to ask what was on his mind. “Liz, have you checked your messages since you left this morning?” He was just worried about Maria.

“No! I forgot!” She stood up immediately, knowing how important this was to Michael. “Let me go get my phone.” She found her backpack in the living room and pulled her phone out of its pocket. She dialed her voicemail as she walked back to the kitchen.

“Liz, it’s me! I don’t know when you’ll get this but like the minute you do, you’d better call me! We have a little problem with…Tess and her evil plan. Call me!”

Liz stopped at the door the kitchen. Her face was pale and that was how Michael knew there was a problem.

“Liz, what is it?” Isabel asked.

Michael stood up and walked over to her. “Is she okay?” His voice was low and solid but there was panic lying beneath it.

“Guys, I think we need a change of plan.” She handed the phone to Michael and replayed the message for him.

A minute later, Michael dropped the phone on the table. “That bastard is there.”

“What? Who?” Alex jumped up to follow Michael out the door.

“Nasedo.” Liz said as they all took after Michael. “He’s working at the CrashDown.”

Michael was starting his motorcycle by the time they got outside. He was just about to put on his helmet when Max stepped in front of him.

“Max, get out of my way.”

“Michael, you can’t just do this—“

“Max, get out of my way. You—“

“Michael—“

“You cannot expect me to just leave her there, Max. We don’t know what he might do to her.” Michael looked his brother straight in the eye.

“Michael, I understand how you feel, but you can’t just go back there without thinking it through. We—“

“We need a plan.”

“Liz, this is Maria we’re talking about. We can’t just—“

Liz interrupted him. “I know, Michael. And I want to protect her just as much as anyone. But you have to admit that we need to take care of all of this together, and that includes Tess and Nasedo. They’ve been playing around with our life for far longer than they ever should have.” She paused. “And I know Maria; she can handle this, even for just one more day. Because if we play our cards right, Michael, we can figure out some plan to stop Nasedo and Tess.”

“Let’s just call Maria, Michael,” Isabel suggested. “If she says she can’t handle it, you can go back to Roswell and bring her here. Hell, we’ll all go. But if she says she can handle this, we stay here and finish our training.”

Michael nodded and turned the motorcycle off. “Let’s call her.”

Alex pulled Liz’s cell phone out of his pocket. “Here. She’s probably still at the CrashDown.”

Michael dialed and waited while it rang. After 3 rings, he started to get antsy. It was after 9 pm; surely they weren’t busy.

Ring!

“Well, answer the phone already!” Maria yelled over the whirl of the blender. This had to be the hundredth Alien Blast she’d made today.

“This is not—“

“Now, Tess!” Maria said her millionth prayer for patience…and Michael.

Tess walked over to the phone and answered it with a pathetic, “CrashDown?”

“Tess, is that you?” Michael forced himself to sound normal.

“Michael?”

“Yeah, it’s me—“

“Where are you? What did Mr. Parker mean you were researching Czechoslovakians? I can only assume that means something that has to do with us. I should know about this, Michael!”

“It’s nothing, Tess. It’s just another extra credit assignment from Mr. Seligman so I can pass his class. Where’s Maria?”

“Michael, what aren’t you telling me?”

“Tess, there is nothing for me to tell you. Now I want to talk to my girlfriend.”

“Fine!” Tess looked over at Maria who looked so happy making drinks for these ridiculous people who would actually eat in a restaurant filled with alien memorabilia. “Maria, you have a call!” She dropped the receiver so that it dangled from the base and walked away. She could just wait till they were home—and he was begging her for---

Maria rushed over to the phone hoping it was Liz or Michael. She needed someone to remind her that she was strong and could handle this. She looked behind her to see if either Tess or Nasedo was standing behind her. “Hello?” She said quietly.

“Maria?” Why was she so quiet? Maria was never quiet!

“Michael, thank God it’s you!” She exclaimed.

That sounded more like her, but you never could tell. What if Nasedo or Tess had already hurt her? “Maria, just tell me something.”

“What?” Had he not heard her message? What was he doing?

“When was the first time we ever spent the night together?”

“Michael, why are you asking me that?”

“Just tell me, Maria.”

She sighed and started tapping her foot against the wall. “Fine. It was the night you tried to hijack my car and kidnap me! I still hate that my first night with you, Michael, was spent in that crummy little porn hotel—“

Michael sighed. That was his Maria. “Okay. I’m sorry for that. I was just making sure Tess—“

It all dawned on her. “I get it. Michael—“

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Is he still there?”

“Yes.”

“Do you need me to come get you?”

“Yes,” she sighed. She wanted that more than anything.

“I—“

“But you can’t, Michael. I know that.”

“Maria, I can do anything I want.”

She looked around and noticed Nasedo was staring at her through the window. “No, you can’t. You need to do that research.”

“Maria, are you sure? You can come out here—“

She interrupted him before he could say anything. “Michael, I promise I’m fine. And I promise I can take care of myself.”

“Maria—“

“I’m serious. You need to do what you need to do, and then you can come home.”

“I promise you I’ll be home soon. We’re going to finish working on our powers and come back there with a plan—“

“I know you will, Michael.” And that was the truth. Maria knew that Michael would never abandon her; there was something between them now that wouldn’t let him. “I love you. Tell everyone I’m okay and I hope the training is going well.”

“I will. And I’ll call you later on when you get home.”

“Okay.” Maria smiled.

Michael paused for a moment, knowing she was smiling. “Oh, and Maria?”

“Yes?”

“I love you, too.” He hung up the phone and turned back to the others. “She’s okay, but as soon as we can, we get her out of this.”

“Agreed,” Max said.

Maria hung up the phone and sent up a silent prayer to whoever would listen. <I>Please let Michael and the other s be okay, and let them come home quickly.</I>

“I want to know what Michael is doing.”

Maria jumped and turned to face the only girl she’d ever wished she could murder with her bare hands. “Tess! Jesus, give a girl some warning before you start yelling behind her.”

Tess looked at her like that didn’t matter. “Where is Michael?”

“Tess, he’s doing research for a project. You know that.”

“What kind of research?”

“On Czeckosolvakians. Mr. Seligman told him he had to do one on one interviews with some people he knows in Tempe.”

“Arizona?!”

“Yes. I don't like it either, but there are some things we have to deal with. I mean, you don’t think I want him here with me…so I can spend the nights at his—“ She daydreamed out loud, knowing it was killing Tess.

Tess rolled her eyes and interrupted Maria before she heard anymore drivel that came from her mouth. “Why is he doing this? Doesn’t he know we have more important things to do?”

Maria looked behind Tess’ head and smiled. “Tess, being able to graduate is pretty important, too!”

“Graduation doesn’t matter!” She said vehemently. “All that matters—“

“Tess, I hate to hear you talk like that,” Mr. Parker walked up behind Tess. “Of course, graduation matters. It’s so important for the rest of your life. I know you’ve moved around a lot and probably haven’t had a lot of time to be able to really think about colleges, but—“

“I’m going to get back to work, Mr. P. Thanks for letting me take that call,” Maria smiled.

Tess sneered at her as Mr. Parker embarked upon his patented speech on the importance of a college education.

Maria flitted through the restaurant, refilling drinks and talking to regular customers as she went.

“Maria, can we get some service over here?”

She turned toward the voice from Tess’ section. It was Kyle and Sheriff Valenti. She hadn’t really seen them since all this started. She knew they weren’t fully informed, but she didn’t think that either of them would be able to live with Tess if they knew the truth.

“Absolutely, Sheriff,” she smiled as she walked over to them. They were another reason that they needed to get rid of Tess and Nasedo. They didn’t deserve this. “What can I get you?”

“Coffee,” Sheriff Valenti said.

“I’ll take a coffee, too,” Kyle said.

Both Maria and the Sheriff did a double take. “What are you talking about, Kyle? You always order chocolate milk.”

“But today I want coffee.”

“You don’t even like coffee, Kyle.” Maria pointed out. There was no denying that. She could easily remember a time back when Kyle and Liz were dating, and Kyle stole a sip of what he assumed to be hot chocolate. He’d spewed Liz’s very strong coffee all over her neatly organized biology notes. The smile on her face said she thought she’d won.

Kyle’s next words wiped the smile from her face.

“I also don’t like being kept in the dark by my friends, but I guess I’m going to learn how to accept that. So I can definitely learn how to drink coffee,” Kyle met Maria’s eyes.

“Kyle!” Sheriff Valenti said quickly. His tone was harsh.

“Kyle,” Maria’s voice was more emotional. She’d known something like this would happen. She’d just hoped it would happen to Liz…or Max.

“I don't’ want anymore excuses, Maria. I just want the truth.” He looked at his father. “We deserve it. My father and I have kept every secret you’ve ever asked of us, without asking any questions. We’ve put ourselves on the ling for all of you so many times without question. But I have some questions now, and I think it’s only fair that I get answers.”

Maria sat down in one of the two empty chairs. “I agree, Kyle.” She looked up and saw Tess walking towards them with an angry look on her face. “And I will explain, Kyle. I promise.” She stood up. “Just later—after work.” She whispered, “Please don’t say anything to Tess.”

“Why?” Kyle looked at Maria. “What’s goingon?”

Tess stood behind Kyle. “What’s going on with what?”

Maria smiled. “It’s not a big deal, Kyle. I’m fine.” She prayed he wouldn’t ask her again. “I’ll be right back with your coffee—“

Kyle stopped her from walking away. “Maria, can I have a chocolate milk?”

She smiled. “Sure.”

<center>***</center>

The rest of the training came remarkably easy to the 4 of them at the cabin. It was like they had just awoken something inside them that knew the uses of their powers. All it took was some practicing to remember how to do it. They mastered dream-walking in one night where they all learned far too much about how much Alex was obsessed with Isabel. They worked on healing over one very intense afternoon, in which Alex spent a great deal of time with a wound on his arm. They worked on shields and protecting themselves one morning, during which Alex felt like he was watching some futuristic GI Joe.

By the end of 2 days, they were pretty well aware of everything they could easily do and knew what to do for the rest simply by making the connection.

“But do you think all this is enough?” Isabel asked. “Will we know enough to stop Tess and Nasedo?”

No one had an answer at first.

“Maybe the difference is the connection you four share now. Maybe that’s what makes you capable of defeating Tess. You are all aware of each other now, in a way you couldn’t have been aware of back on Antar. The connection joins you and your powers.” Alex looked at them for a moment. “You can combine to have a stronger power than even we can understand. That’s how we can win.” He thought for a moment. “Maybe dream-walking Tess by yourself won’t work, Isabel, but dream-walking Tess with Liz’s help will.”

Isabel smiled. “Yeah.” She rested her head on Alex’s shoulder.

“You’ve all got great strengths, guys. It’s just now you know how to use them.”

“We do need a plan, though, for what’s going to happen when we get back to Roswell,” Michael said. “Nasedo’s back in town, too. How are we going to handle him?”

Max thought for a moment. “I think the most important thing initially will be to protect ourselves from Tess and Nasedo. And the easiest way to do that is to protect our minds. We know how to allow our connection. We just need to make our connection private—so that they can’t break in.”

“What else are we going to do?” Michael asked. “Because my girlfriend is back there, risking her life every second, working with them.” The passion and concern was unmistakable in his voice.

“Michael—“

“Don’t Michael me, Isabel. I know what I’m talking about. And I know what we need to do.”

“And what is that?” Isabel asked. <I>He is such a hothead!</I>

“We need to go in there and take Tess and Nasedon out—“

“Take them out?” Isabel exclaimed. “Jesus, Michael, you sound like some movie gangster. Do you want to make them an offer they can’t refuse, too?”

“Do you have a better idea?” He glared at her.

“As—“

Max interrupted. “This is getting us nowhere. I know, Michael, that you want some action, some resolution. We all do. We just need to think this through. If we go in and just take them out, we’ll be exposing ourselves—and our true nature—to everyone. Is that how you want to tell the world that there really are aliens? By killing what seems to be helpless humans?”

Michael sighed. “Than what do we do, oh great leader?” There was no sarcasm in his voice, just a lot of anxiety.

“I don’t know. We’ll have to figure the plans out together as we go. The connection will help with that.”

“When do we go back to Roswell?” Liz asked.

“Tomorrow.” Max said.

No one disagreed.

Kyle and Sheriff Valenti walked around to the back of the CrashDown and knocked on the door. Maria opened it slowly and looked around several times, in full paranoia mode. “Are you alone?”

Kyle nearly laughed. “Are we alone? Who do you think we brought? The pope?”

She frowned at him. “Come on in.”

“Maria, what’s going on?” the sheriff asked. “Why all the secrecy?” He held up the receipt from their breakfast on which Maria had written, “10 pm. Break Room. Be alone.” He shook his head. “Why are you acting so cryptically?”

“And why is Tess not here? What does she have to do with this?”

“Everything,” Maria sighed. She looked toward the restaurant. “Do you know where she is now?”

“She went out almost as soon as she got home. Something about going to see a new coworker,” Kyle said quietly.

Maria hoped that she didn’t hear what she thought she’d heard in Kyle’s voice. “well, he might be a new coworker for me, but Tess has known him a whole lot longer.”

“Maria, what is that supposed to mean?”

“The new cook at the CrashDown is Nasedo.”

“I thought—“

“Maria, Nasedo is dead.”

“That’s what we all thought.”

“Until?”

“Well, that’s where this long story begins,” Maria said. “Listen, I know you probably feel like your life can’t get any more confusing, but I promise it is about to.”

“Maria, stop the dramatics. Just tell us what has been going on.”

“Okay. First of all, Max and Liz are back together—finally.”

Kyle just nodded. Of course they were back together. It was inevitable.

“Anyway, Liz and Max were going to tell all of us in the CrashDown one afternoon. And for some reason, I can’t remember what, Liz touched Tess.”

“Touched?”

“I’m not talking in that by an angel kind of way here. Or in that special friends kind of way either. She just reached out and touched Tess’ arm and she got flashes.”

“Flashes of what?” the Sheriff asked.

“How? I thought she only got flashes from Max.”

“Well, that is explained in a minute. Anyway, Liz got these flashes. She saw that Tess would react badly to the news.”

“Well, duh,” Kyle’s voice held something more than just cynical sarcasm. “Tess has been obsessed with max since she came out of her pod.”

“So Liz saw a vision of the future?” the Sheriff was trying to get his head around all this.

“Not exactly,” Maria thought for a moment about everything she knew. “She saw Tess’ life, all of it. And I guess the easiest way to put this is simply that Tess is not an original member of the Royal 4. She’s not the Queen after all, and she has no claim to Max.”

“What?” Kyle was confused. <I?Not a member of the Royal 4? She was an alien. She had to be a member…unless she was one of the people…one of their…</I>

“Tess is an alien, but she wasn’t sent to Earth with our aliens.”

“But there were 4 pods. If she’s not the fourth, than who is?”

“Liz.”

“Liz!” Kyle exclaimed. “Maria, all 3 of us have known Liz since she was a baby. How can she be a member of the Royal 4?”

“Well, that is a long story, but I promise you that she is.” Maria recounted the entire story of the true Royal 4 to the 2 men.

Kyle heard his father then ask the question he was dreading. “Then what about Tess? Where does she fit in?”

“She’s the enemy. She and Nasedo are.” She looked at both men and saw shock on the Sheriff’s face; Kyle looked like he had just heard everything he had ever dreaded. “Tess has been plotting against them since she hatched. And she has done her best to hurt all of us, including Alex who she’d mindwarped into going to Las Cruces to decode the destiny book.”

“Oh my God.”

“Alex’s brain was so weak when Max healed him—“ she caught her breath, “he couldn’t survive many more mindwarps. She almost killed him.”

“No,” the Sheriff shook his head.

“She’s been plotting against us since the day she came to Roswell. Kyle, remember the favor Liz asked of you? The way she used you—“

“I remember.” He cut off the description. His father didn’t need to hear that.

“She did that because Tess and Nasedo had convinced her that if she didn’t push Max away, the world would end and all of us would die. Tess thought Max would turn to her, and they could go on with the destiny that she wants.” She sighed. “We obviously can’t let that happen.”

“Where are Max, Michael, Isabel, and Liz now?”

“With Alex, training at a cabin someplace in the woods. I don’t even know the exact location.”

“Training?”

“Learning to use their powers, trying to figure out some way to get back at Tess and Nasedo.”

“Alone?” the Sheriff said nervously. He just didn’t know which part of him was more nervous: the law enforcer or the father. “I wish they had come to me. I could have helped them in so many ways—“

“They didn’t want to put you in any danger, especially with Tess living with you.”

Kyle looked at her. “Were you ever going to tell us that we were living with a psychopathic potential murdered?”

“Kyle, it has killed me and Liz to not tell you. We just didn’t want you to change the way you behave with Tess. It could alert her that we’re on to her.”

“What are you planning to do?”

“I don't know the plan yet. I haven’t really heard from them that much.”

“When will they be back?”

“Well, they have an excuse to be gone for a week. But I’m guessing they might return whenever they think their training is complete.”

The Sheriff nodded. “I take it then that this college trip Jeff Parker and Philip Evans are so proud of—“

“A cover. It was the easiest way to get them out of town.”

He nodded again. “I don't agree with them lying, but… I can understand it.

“What can I—“

“Can you get in contact with them?”

“Liz has her cell phone.”

“I know they’re anxious to come back—“

Maria nodded. “I don’t think Michael will wait much longer.”

“He can come but tell the others who have the week’s excuse to stick to the original cover,” the sheriff said.

“I will.” She nodded, just happy that her SpaceBoy could come back. “I’m so sorry we didn’t tell you sooner.”

Kyle stood up. “Just don't keep us in the dark again, Maria. It’s not right.”

“We won’t,” she promised.

“And I want to be involved in whatever’s going on—“

“Kyle—“

“Maria, I can help just as much as you and Alex.” He said pointedly. “I need to help.”

Maria heard that little sound in his voice change into something much more mature. He’d really lost something today. “Okay.” She had the feeling they would need everyone they could find soon, especially when it came to fighting Tess.
