Summary:
This story begins when Max makes his take-a-step-back speech to Liz, at the end of “The Balance.” My story takes place during their junior year in high school. Isabel is good friends with Liz and Maria prior to Liz’s shooting. When Max heals Liz, he removes all the evidence from her uniform. Everything that happens after Max’s break up speech to Liz is also different. Their relationship evolves faster, provoking many surprising changes and revelations. Our gang will embrace new allies, discover new enemies, and overcome many conflicts. How will the pod squad and friends rise to these occasions? The fate of two worlds rests on the shoulders of our beloved group.
Prologue
Max, deep in thought somberly drives Liz home and parks the jeep. Holding hands, Max walks Liz to the ladder leading to her balcony. He follows her up.
“Max, I’m so sorry about not being able to help with the healing stones ritual for healing Michael. I just couldn’t help but, think what if it were you lying there, in the cave, possibly dying . . . Are you mad at me? You seem quiet.”
Max gazes at her brown doe eyes drinking in the trust and love he sees reflected at him. “Liz,
No, I can’t be mad at you. . . . But, I can’t promise that what happened to Michael will happen to me, because we are different. I don’t ever want to hurt you. It scares me to think of myself and what kind of danger that I could put you in. There is so much about my own heritage I have questions about and how that could endanger you. I can’t stand for anything to happen to you;
because of me, or who I am. Liz, I can’t give you normally. I think it would be best if we just take a step back now, and not be a couple,” said Max. He turns from Liz and walks toward the ladder to leave her balcony.
Liz moves closer to Max. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, threatening to release at any moment. “Max, stop. Wait! . . . I just need to . . . I want to just remember . . .” Looking into his amber tear filled eyes she reaches her arms toward him. She wraps her arms around his neck, kissing him softly. Liz wills all of her love and acceptance for him, into that tender kiss. Max initiates a second kiss just as emotionally filled. Reluctantly he descends to the street and his waiting jeep. Max is devastated, but believes he had to sacrifice his own happiness to give Liz a chance at a normal life.
Liz hears the jeep’s engine roar to life. She is stunned while hearing the jeep sound becomes more distant, literally taking her soul mate further away . . . leaving her alone and confused, to mourn this unwanted decision.
Entering her bedroom, she takes determined steps to her bed where she flings herself on it and cries into her pillow for what seems like several minutes. Liz keeps replaying in her head, as in a video stuck in a continuous loop, Max’s words. “Liz, I can’t give you normal. I think it would be best if we just take a step back now, and not be a couple.” But we love each other. This doesn’t make any sense. Always the logical one, she thinks about what Max said to her. Reflects on what it felt like when they saw into each others souls. Liz knows they did share a secret love for each other. However, before the healing she didn’t think he noticed her. Besides the embarrassing childhood moments like the infamous cupcake dress her mother made for her when she was little. They now share something much deeper through their ever present connection: thoughts, feelings, emotions, and an awareness of each other that is unique to them. She knows how he views, loves, and even cherishes her. Liz says aloud, “Damn it Max, this is not right! I love you and you love me! So why are you making us take a step back? This is so unfair!”
Liz fumbles for her phone . . . speed dialing Isabel.
“Hi Isabel, can you come over and spend the night? I really need to talk to you and Maria. Isabel could you call Maria and invite her? I know she’s not working tonight and I could use a girl’s night tonight. Is that okay Iz, this is really important?”
Isabel replies, “It’ fine, let me tell my mom. She pauses putting her hand over the mouth piece to ask her mom, yeah sure it’s okay I’ll be right over after I pack a bag and call Maria, anything you want me to bring over Liz? Ice cream?”
“Yes, it’s one of those nights,” Liz replies sniffing tearfully.
“Yeah, sure Liz, I’ll be right over,” a concerned Isabel answers back. “See you in a few, bye Liz.”
“Bye, Isabel.” Liz sighs, and reaches for the box of tissue on her night stand and takes a tissue to wipe her eyes. She goes into her bathroom and washes her face trying to not look as if she’d been crying. She sniffs, and dries her face on a fresh washcloth deciding she looks about as presentable as she can under the circumstances. Liz readies herself to go tell her mother she invited Isabel and Maria to spend the night for girl’s night.
Nancy Parker, Liz’s mom, says “Sure honey, as long as it’s okay with their mother’s it’s okay by me. Remember, not to be up too late it is a school night, and keep the noise down when your father goes to bed.”
Isabel call’s Maria tells her something is wrong with Liz. “I just got off the phone with Liz, she sounds like she’s been crying and she needs our support, a girl’s night.
Maria replies, “Why would she be crying?”
“I don’t know for sure, but I bet it has something to do with my brother. But we’ll find out. That’s why I’m calling. Liz needs you and me to come over and stay the night and have a girl’s night.”
Maria replies, “Well okay, I’m sure Mom, won’t mind. Do you want me to swing by and pick you up in say 30 minutes? Okay, I’ll see you then Isabel.”
Maria and Isabel arrive at the Parker’s apartment and knocks only once to find a very melancholy and antsy Liz greets them at her door. Liz greets her friends and they make small talk about being happy to be invited to a much needed girl’s night. Once the girls have made it to Liz’s room, she shut and locked it behind her. Liz began to tell her friends what happened that has her so upset.
Maria asks, “Liz is this is because River Dog asked you step back from the circle to not stop the flow when we held the healing stones to heal Michael?”
Isabel tells her, “Liz that’s no reason to be so upset and crying. We all know you were just as scared and concerned for Michael as the rest of the group was. So what happened after that has you crying and looking so lost and hurt?” said Isabel.
“What happened? Where did you and Max go after we all left the reservation?”Maria asks Liz.
“Well Max drove me home. He . . . He” Liz’s lips quiver, and her eyes filling with newly formed unshed tears.
Isabel says, “So this has to do with you and Max, right?” Liz simply nods her head yes, unable to form the words. She breaks down and sobs in front of Isabel and Maria. What the hell did my brother say? Or do, to make you cry?”
Maria reaches over to grab the box of tissue and puts it on Liz’s bed as the girls each sit on each side of Liz offering their support and comfort.
Liz takes a tissue Maria offers her and takes a deep breath calming herself. Preparing her mouth to talk and hoping to stop breaking down and crying. Liz steadies herself with one more deep breathe. “His actual words to me were, ‘ I think it would be best if we just take a step back, and not be a couple’.”
Isabel says, “He actually said that to you because of what happened with Michael. That’s so stupid. Michael, is okay now. We know why that happened to Michael, there’s no danger now. What the hell is wrong with Max anyway?”
“ I only know I was the happy having a great time being on my date with Max. Then everything turned very scary, with Michael almost dying. When Michael was healed I was so happy and relieved that he was going to be okay. It was later after Max took me home when the bottom dropped out of my world. I guess that’s what being in love is. I just don’t understand, Isabel. Is this all because of what happened with River Dog at the reservation?” Liz continues, “ I just keep thinking how scared I was for Michael. I couldn’t help but wonder what if this had happened to Max. I was completely terrified. Terrified not because of him being different; but, terrified because I wouldn’t have known what to do to save his life.” Liz looks at Isabel “You got to believe me I couldn’t bare the thought of anything happening to any of you, especially not Max. Isabel, He’s a part of me now, a part of my soul. I’d die if anything happened to him. You have to believe me. Isabel, I love Max.” Liz breaks down sobbing with tears and trying to regain control of both her voice and her tears.
Isabel, comforting Liz strokes her long chocolate brown hair, offers her a tissue and tells Liz to calm down. She thinks she knows how her brother thinks and she can offer some sort of his demented perspective on why he said that to her. “Of course, he’s an idiot and is completely wrong. But, don’t worry Liz this is fixable, trust me. I know my brother. I know that Max has been in love with you for a long time, even before the shooting. I know ever since you two have fallen in love with each other. I know for a fact he is always asking me about you. He’s just being a stupid male right now, so we just need to show him the error of his flawed male thinking. That is unless you want to stay broken up, do you Liz?”
“NO! Of course not, I’m just so confused right now. I know I love him, I’m just hurt and angry. I know he loves me I see it in his eyes and in his soul. He just wouldn’t listen to me or even talk about any of this, like it was only his decision to make. I could just kick his cute hybrid ass sometimes.”
Isabel tells Liz, “You’re right he just thinks he’s being noble, sparing you from whom we are so you won’t feel stuck with him. He’s afraid that knowing and being involved with him will ruin your life, keeping you from a more normal situation. Am I right Liz, did he say something like that to you?”
“Yes he did. How did you know, Isabel?”
“I know my brother, he is very concerned and protective of you. He’d do anything for you, including sparing his own happiness if it meant you’d be happier in the long run according to him,” said Isabel.
Maria pipes up “Men are stupid!” All three girls sigh and say in unison “Yes! They are.”
Maria says, “Okay Liz.”
Isabel says, “What are we going to do about this? Are you going to just take this from him Liz? Letting him make decisions for you about your future and what you want?”
Liz, says “NO! Damn it! I want to be with Max! Just who the hell does he think he is to do that? Making decisions about what I want or whom I want in my life and in my future!”
Isabel looks at Maria and they both have that a light bulb moment gleam in their eye. They turn to look at Liz with a wicked smile plastered on their faces.
Isabel and Maria look at Liz. Maria says, “Well the way I see it, Liz. It’s time you take away that decision from Max. That is if you really want to be with him?”
Liz’s corners of her mouth turn up hesitantly. “What are you two planning, because I know that look on both of your faces?”
Maria motions to Isabel and says, “I believe this is your area of expertise. So you have the floor.”
Isabel smiles at Maria and says, “Thank You. Okay, Liz here’s the plan. You are going to make Max go crazy with jealousy and make him want to kick himself for making that idiotic statement to you and deciding things for you. What do you say, Liz. You up for the plan ?”
Liz smiles at both Liz and Maria, wiping the last remnants of tears from her face. “Okay, what am I going to have to do?” Liz smiles even bigger, “So, you’ll help me Isabel? Maria?
Maria says, “ Hey girlfriend, we got your back, don’t we Isabel?”
Isabel put her arm around Maria’s shoulders affirmatively saying, “Absolutely, Max is never going to know what hit him. Here’s the plan Liz, first off we need to make a list.”
Maria groans, “Not the List Nazi!” Maria looks up at Isabel with her hands up in defeat, “Okay, okay, I was kidding. Your not that bad . Maria decides she’ll just go and get that notepad and get started on writing that list of things to do to execute there newly forming plan for Liz to change Max’s mind.

Part 1
Isabel says, “Maria you are in charge of writing down the list.”
“Okay, Isabel I’m ready,” replies Maria.
So Isabel says, “First off, I think a make over is in order. Don’t you think so Maria?”
“Oh yes, definitely,” replies Maria..
Liz says, “Ouch, and you guys are my best friends.” “Do I really look that bad?”
“No, of course not, Liz. Your great just the way you are. But if were going to make Max eat his words, then we’re going to make you look hot enough to knock his socks off.”
Liz says, “Your going to make me over, and make me look hot and sexy?”
Maria and Isabel nodded in agreement, “Yes we are. It’ll be easy Liz, your so pretty just the way you are. We’re just going to boost your own prettiness, that’s all. We aren’t going to make you look like a rock star or anything. You’ll still be you Liz, just not hiding is all.”
“Maria, did you write that down?”
“First one on the list is make over. Okay, what about wardrobe shopping?” Maria suggests.
“OOH, yes! Great idea,” exclaims Isabel.
Liz says, “Uh, guys? How much is all this going to cost me? I mean, I like what you’re saying and all. I just know how much you both love to shop for clothes, and I just don’t spend that kind of money on my clothes or even have room for all the stuff you guys both do.”
“Don’t worry, Liz,” Isabel assures her, “ We’ll buy just a couple of key things to add to your wardrobe and the rest I can uh, make for you. You know, adjust something you already have in your closet.” Isabel hinting at using her powers casually. “Okay, what do you think about wearing leather, Liz? Or how about mini skirts, or showing a bare midriff? OOH, what about boots, Liz?”
“Hmm? I don’t know guys. I never wore anything like that before. But, I’m willing to try some stuff on. I don’t want to look sleazy, okay!? I don’t want people to get the wrong impression and think that I’m a, well you know what I mean,” Liz blushes.
Isabel, who has the malls hours memorized says, “Well, it’s 6:45 pm the mall closes at 9:30 p.m. We have time, if we hurry, to start on our list. Tonight we get essential provisions necessary for maximum effect. Tomorrow we begin to execute our plan. Shall we ladies?”
Liz grabs her purse and some of her tip money and says “Let’s do it, girls.”
Liz, Maria, and Isabel return later to Liz’s house with lots of shopping bags in hand. Liz ushers them back to her room after greeting her parents.
Nancy Parker laughs noting all the shopping bags and asks, “Girls, did you leave anything left in the mall for the rest of us to buy?”
Liz just laughs at her mom and rolls her eyes, “Of course we left stuff. Gees, mom you think we were a bunch of shop- a- holics on the loose or something.”
Isabel pipes up saying “Well Mrs. Parker, we did manage to hit quite a few great sales and we only went to a few stores tonight. So, yes we were merciful leaving lots of stores untouched. We were on a mission helping Liz look for a few specific pieces to add to her wardrobe. We’re going to give her a new look. We all thought it would be fun to give each other make overs and fashion advice. Liz volunteered to go first and trust us with her make over since neither of us have bad taste or dress weird . It’ll be fun.”
Nancy Parker says, “ I’m glad to see that you all had a good time shopping. Well, doing make overs sounds like fun, girls; but, keep the noise down okay? We don’t want a cranky Mr. Parker to deal with, now do we? Good night girls, good night Liz.”
Liz says, “Good night mom.”
Max is just getting off work from the UFO Center driving home while reflecting on his conversation earlier with Liz. Max says out loud, “I hope Liz isn’t still upset and crying.” Max is confused about how he is feeling about all of this. He parks the jeep and heads to the house using his key to open the door. Max finds his mom sitting on the couch watching an old movie. Max says, “Hi mom, I’m home now, just got off work. I was wondering, is Isabel in her room studying? I really need to talk to her.”
Diane Evans, Max’s mom, says “No honey. Liz called earlier. She sounded upset, and Isabel asked if she could spend the night over at the Parkers. Isabel said they were going to have a girls night with her and Maria. Why do you ask?”
Max says, “Well I just really needed to talk to Isabel about something, but I guess it can wait.”
Max looks visibly disappointed. He walks, with down cast eyes, to his room.
Diane says, “If it’s really important for you to talk with her, Isabel did say she’d take her cell phone and keep it on in case I needed to reach her. You could call her if you want.”
“Thanks mom,” Max says smiling as he walks to his room. Max calls Isabel. He listens to her phone ring. She answers. Max says, “Hi, Iz what’s going on? Is Liz okay?”
Isabel gives a disgusted look, putting her hand over the mouthpiece shushing the Liz and Maria. “It’s him,”says Isabel. “Yes Max what do you want? Oh, why am I spending the night at Liz’s? Well, if you must know... when my friends lives are shattered, I’m there to help them. Why do you care if I’m at Liz’s? You want to know if Liz is okay? What do you think after that talk you had with her? Look dear brother, if your calling me to get my sympathy or help or something, think again. You screwed up and now you’ll just have to deal with the consequences.” Isabel knows how to put her brother in his place.
“What do you mean consequences? Iz. Are you angry with me about what I said to Liz this afternoon? Okay, scratch that. Dumb question. Obviously you are. Can I talk to Liz, please?”
Isabel had held out the phone so Maria and Liz could hear Max. Liz shakes her head no, she’s not ready to talk to him yet.
Maria grabs the phone from Isabel. “Max Evans, you have a hell of a lot of nerve to want to talk to Liz after what you said to her this afternoon! So you want to talk to Liz? Well maybe she doesn’t want to talk to you right now. Did you ever think about how she feels for more than just one second? No I didn’t think so. Maybe if your lucky she’ll talk to you tomorrow, but only if she feels up to it. Max, it’s her decision to talk to you or not. Hey, now there’s something for you to think about between now and then, maybe she has a say in things too, what do you think about that, Max. Good night Max!” Maria pushes the end button on Isabel’s cell phone, abruptly ending the conversation with Max, leaving him dumbfounded.
Liz is a bit stunned by both Maria and Isabel’s protective attitude. Liz says, “Do you think you were too hard on him?” Obviously concerned.
Isabel and Maria both say, “ NO!” Simultaneously.
Isabel informs Liz, “ look I do love my brother. But sometimes he is so damn pig headed he doesn’t even try to see things from the other persons’ point of view, or even allow them to have one. He needs to learn a lesson here, Liz. He can not go around shutting people out like this making a unilateral decision that effects more than just him. Especially, when we all know he loves you and you love him.”
Maria pipes up “She’s right. You and Max are so right for each other and so sweet I swear I could get cavities just being around you two.”
Isabel agrees, nodding her head. “You two are meant to be together. We all know this, and now were going to make sure Max knows it, too.” Isabel says smiling with a wicked gleam in her eye.
Liz gets a concerned look on her face. “Isabel just what are you planning to do to Max at school tomorrow. Or rather, what are you going to have me do to Max?”
Isabel just smiles sweetly and says, “Just make him face some realties he won’t like, that’s all.”
“What do you mean realities he won’t like?” Liz asks.
“Well,” says Isabel, “ He needs to see that you are hot, and that other guys will notice, too. That’s why the new clothes Liz. You’re going to knock ‘em dead.”
“Wait! I don’t want to go out with other guys, or be flirting with other guys. You know that’s just not me, Isabel. Besides, Max will know that’s not who I am either. I’m just plain old mousy small town girl Liz Parker.
Isabel and Maria smile at her, “Not for long girlfriend, not for long. Besides, you won’t have to be flirting with other guys, they’ll be flirting with you.”
“Okay, what all did you guys get for me in those bags. I know you had me try on like a thousand things and you never told me what you picked out and what was decided on. I only know that I had to pay for it. You’re not going to have me look all smutty or anything? Because, there is no way I would wear anything like that, not even to a costume party. Come on guys, this is me, Liz Parker less than stunning member of West Roswell High’s student body.” Liz’s eyes fill with tears, and looks to Isabel and Maria and says, “Oh my god, I never thought of that, maybe he wanted to break it off because there’s someone else who’s prettier and sexier than me that he is interested in.”
Isabel says, “Liz I can say with absolute certainty there is no other girl that has captured my brothers heart or interest since seeing you back in third grade. Liz, you’re it for him. Liz it’s always been you for him. No one else could even register in his presence, but you.
You know that. Right, Liz? Or do you want me to dream walk him to see just what he’s dreaming about? I will if you want me to Liz.” There is a healthy sibling rivalry that exists between Max and Isabel. She’s always up to torture her brother in a loving sisterly way.
“No, I believe you. I’m just so upset and confused by all this, but I’m prepared to go forward with the plan to get Max back”. Liz says, smiling up at Maria and Isabel. “ Just please don’t make me look all trashy or smutty like that Pam Troy person. Yuk!!! Okay?”“
“Okay.” Agrees Maria and Isabel.
“So, girlfriends,” says Maria.. “Shall we do the make-over now for practice tomorrow morning? Then pick out the out fit for Liz to wear to school. You guys up for it?” All three girls smile and say yes. “Okay which should we do first: out- fit selection? hair? or makeup?”
Isabel suggests that they should work on her hair first, then her makeup, and then the out fit selecting. Getting that all figured out tonight will make tomorrow morning easier.
Meanwhile, at the Evans house, Max is just reeling from his phone call to Isabel. “ Maria’s mad at me, as if that wasn’t bad enough, and Isabel is too. This is so not good for me,” replies Max to himself aloud. “What have I done? I thought I was protecting Liz but now I’m beginning to think maybe I was wrong, I don’t know.” A very confused and frustrated Max decides to go take a hot shower to relax and then get some sleep. Perhaps everything will not seem so confusing or frustrating tomorrow at school. Max goes to sleep and finds himself having nightmares about himself, and his being alien, and how being with Liz could endanger her or hurt her. Max continues in his restless fitful slumber and awakens in the morning feeling tired and upset by the images from his nightmare.
Liz awakens to the sound of birds chirping and the dappled sunlight peaking through her drapes in her bedroom. Liz stretches and she looks over at the clock noticing it’s 5:45 am the alarm hasn’t gone off yet. Liz lay in her bed contemplating if this plan will work on Max. Liz sure hopes so. If it had not been for Isabel and Maria’s friendship and support she’d be a total basket case. Liz sighs, and decides to get first dibs on taking the first shower before the alarm goes off. After all, it could take a while to get three girls ready in the morning. Liz takes a quick shower and wakes up her friends just before the alarm goes off at 6 am.
Isabel and Maria both cover their faces with their pillows and grown at the sound of the alarms loud incessant beeping sound.
Liz, laughs at her friends. Okay, ladies rise and shine we have to hurry so we can all get ready. Come on guys, you got to do my hair and makeup for me, remember we have a mission to accomplish.
Maria laughs at Liz, “don’t you mean we have one alien to do our combined voodoo on.”
Isabel, just looks at them and smiles. “Let’s get to work, we don’t want to be late. In fact we want to get there a little early... you know, dangle the bait, make him drool. Hey! Don’t look at me like that. I know guys, and I know my brother. He’s so going to regret that talk yesterday... big time.”
