Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been here recently, but I've been shopping all weekend, yeah! Hubby's not happy, but tis the season to spend butckets of money!

Chapter Eleven

Famous last words, Liz thought as she walked around to the stairs leading to her apartment. She should have noticed Kyle’s car parked out front, but her mind was still on the budding feelings she was having toward Max Evans.

“Liz,” he said, getting to his feet.

“Kyle,” she replied, trying to get past him and up the stairs.

“Liz we need to talk,” he implored, grabbing a hold of her arm.

“Get you hands off of me,” she snarled, trying to break his grip.

“I said we need to talk.”

“You need to drop dead.”

“Is that the way to talk to the father of your child?”

Liz barked out a laugh. Freeing herself with a wrench, she spun on him and snorted. “The father of my child, what a hoot!”

“Liz what’s the matter with you?”

“Me? I think the problem here is you. I want nothing to do with you. Why can’t you get that though your thick head.”

“I want to discuss those ridiculous demands your lawyer sent me,” he growled.

“They are not ridiculous Kyle, they’re what I deserve. Considering what you’ve been doing behind my back for the past six years, your getting off easy.”

“Easy? Liz you want it all! What am I going do do? Where am I going to live after you sell the house?”

“That’s not my problem. Why don’t you shack up with one of your lovers, I’m sure one of them will take you in until you get back on your feet.”

“Is that where you want me to take the baby when I have visitations?” he sneered.

“Your never going to see the baby, so there’s no problem.”

“It’s half mine and I’ll be damned if your going to take him away from me!”

Liz’s control on her anger broke. She hauled off and slapped him across the face. “You don’t have anything. Aurora’s mine.” She laughed bitterly. “Remember the the Halloween party? Do you remember what we did?”

“We didn’t do anything at the party, I was with....”

“With who Kyle? Not with me that’s for sure, but that’s the night I got pregnant. So you see, she’s not yours.”

“You cheated on me?” he asked incredulously.

“No I thought it was you, he had on the same costume, but I should have know it wasn’t you from the first. He treated me like you never did; like a woman. Go away Kyle. Sign the papers and forget about the last six years. I know I plan to.”

Kyle watched her walk up the stairs. “You cheated on me! Wait until I tell my lawyer, he’s going to take you to the cleaners!”

Turning to look down a him she replied, “Do what you got to do, Kyle, but remember this: if you try and make this unpleasant, your finished. I’ll make sure this divorce is the biggest and ugliest thing to ever hit the papers. Oh and by the way, how’s your Dad?”

“You bitch! You turned him against me and you know it!”

“No you turned him against you. Didn’t you ever realize that your mother almost killed him by what she did? Your no better that she was.” Turning the key in the door, she opened it and closed it softly behind her.

###

Kyle spun away from the stair and straight into Max’s fist. Falling to the ground, he grabbed his nose and cried out when he saw the blood. “Who the fuck are you?”

“The guy who's going to beat the shit out of you,” Max said softly, an evil gleam in his eye.

“Your Evans, right?” Kyle asked, regaining his feet. “What the hell are you doing at my wife's house?”

“Making sure Liz was okay.”

“You leave my wife alone. If she needs anything, I’ll take care of her.”

“Like you did in New York?”

“How did you... did she tell you? She lies. She got everything screwed up, like usual.”

Max punched him in the gut. “No she didn’t tell me a thing. You think you didn’t have an audience at the hotel? Your a fool, Kyle.

"Marrying Liz was the only good thing you ever did with your sorry excuse of a life and you blew it. Leave her alone. She deserves to be happy and with you around, that can’t happen.”

Grunting, Kyle unfolded himself from the crouch he was in and snarled, “And you can? I know all about you, Evans. All you care about is a bunch of lowlifes who refuse to get a job and make their own way. Instead, they come begging to you and Masterson hands over all the money I work so hard to make for Metachem. You disgust me.”

“The feeling is mutual. Stay away from Liz and you might make it out in one piece.”

“What’s that suppose to mean?”

“Leave Liz alone and you'll never have to know.”

“You wait, Evans, I’ll make you pay for this!” he cried, staggering down the ally.

Max watched him go and resisted the urge to climb the stairs to Liz’s apartment. He had come upon their argument right before it finished. He had been shocked to hear that she knew Kyle wasn’t Aurora’s father. This could be the opening he needed to tell her it was him behind the mask. No, she’s been thought enough today. Maybe I’ll talk to Iz. She might know how I can approach Liz.

###

“Well, that’s it,” Liz’s lawyer said, sliding the papers Liz had just signed into her folder. “All I need to do is have the judge sign these and it’s over.”

Liz gave him a grateful smile. She didn’t know what made Kyle change his mind, but he had his lawyer send over the signed papers a few days after their fight at her apartment. He accepted everything she wanted and had given up all rights to the baby.

“Thank you,” she said, getting to her feet and showing him to the door. “I appreciate everything you’ve done for me.”

“My pleasure, Miss Parker. If you need anything else....”

“I’ll be sure to call you,” she finished.

“Good afternoon.”

“Bye.”

Maria came over and put her arm around her shoulders. “That was weird. After you told me about Kyle’s threats, I was sure he was going to make you divorce into a three ring circus.”

“You and me both. I wonder what changed his mind?”

“Who cares! Your finally free from that scum bag.” Maria did a little dance and Liz laughed. She blessed the day she met her best friend. She didn’t know how she would have made it thru all this without her.

“Who’s on baby-sitting detail tonight?” she asked the capering blonde.

“Me,” she groaned. “Can you please tell me why we have to spend half the night at Metachem? It’s seriously cutting into my social life.”

“What social life?” teased Liz.

“Thanks for reminding me!”

“Sorry. I know it’s a pain, but Doug wants everything perfect and if one of us isn’t there overseeing things, we’ll never make the deadline”

“But why June twenty-fifth? Nine weeks to makeover two floors and the conference room is nuts! I know money is no object, but damn girl, he’s asking the impossible.”

“We still have seven weeks left, Maria. That’s plenty of time. All we’re doing is a little painting and replacing the carpets.”

“And the window treatment, the art work and half the furniture. Do you realize what I had to do to get that manufacture in North Carolina to put a rush on the tables?”

“I’m sure you handled it like you always do; with grace and charm.”

“Try spit and determination,” she complained.

“Just think about the huge commission we’re going to get," she cajoled. "Didn’t you say you were getting tired of the Jetta? Maybe we could get a Volvo or something.”

“Sure, go ahead and bribe me, why don’t you,” she laughed. “Okay, I’ll go, but I don’t have to like it.”

Liz kissed her cheek and said, “Thanks. Oh and by the way, give my love to Old Stonewall for me, will ya?”

“Oh don’t get me started on Mr. Michael Gurien. I swear to God, one of these days I’m going to knock his block off.”

“Just make sure you don’t get blood on the new rugs!”

We're getting close to the end! Hope you like, Krys.

Chapter Twelve

“...and that about sums it up,” Max said, finishing his tale to Iz. “Pretty pathetic, huh?”

“I’ve heard worse,” she said, taping her fingers on the table.

“So what do you suggest? Do I try and get her to love me first, or do I tell her and hope we can work things out?”

“Well if I fell for a guy, then found out he was the mysterious father of my baby and knew it, but didn’t tell me, there would be no way in hell I’d have anything else to do with him. I think you should tell her and see what happens.”

“But how do I do that?” he asked, running his hand thru his hair. “I’ve known for almost a month.”

“I suggest you ask her out to diner and break it to her gently. Don’t you think she wants to know who the daddy is? Use the brain God gave you, Max.”

“I know, I know, but I don’t want her to get the impression that I sleep with just anyone. You know I’ve been attracted to her from the moment I saw her. I think deep down I might have know it was her behind that cat mask from the beginning.”

“Tell her what you just told me. Tell her that you’ve been sniffing after her since the Harvest Ball. Tell her how you were trying to figure out what Kyle was doing behind her back. Tell her that you were the one who sent Maria to the airport. Be honest and she’ll come around.”

Max dropped his head into his hands. He should have told her the moment he saw the newsletter. He was so afraid she was going to hate him.

“Have Maria help you.”

His head shot up. “What did you just say?”

“Get that Maria girl to help you. She knows you care about Liz. I bet she would be willing to help her friend.”

Max sprung from his chair and gave his sister a squeeze. “Your a genius!” he cried.

Looking down at her nails, she replied, nonchalantly, “I try.”

###

“Hey Michael,” Max said, walking into the security room. “anything going on?”

Michael quickly changed the view on the screen before him and replied, “Uh, not much, Max.”

Max had caught a glimpse of what Michael was watching, so he already knew the answer to his next question. “Is Maria still here?”

“Who?” he asked, his voice squeaking.

Trying not to laugh, Max said, “Maria DeLuca. She’s with Fantasy Decor.”

Michael leafed thru the papers on his clip board. “She hasn’t signed out yet, so she’s here somewhere. Probably bugging people trying to work.”

Deciding to overlook the last part, Max asked, “Could you check and see where she is?”

“She’s the short blonde, right?” he asked innocently.

Like you didn’t already know that. “Uh-hu.”

Michael punched a couple of buttons on the panel in front of him until the view he had been watching came back up. “She’s on the second floor, talking to that jerk off painter.”

Patting him on the back Max said, “Thanks, Michael. See ya later.”

Michael grunted and continued, “What she sees in that muscle head, is beyond me......”

###

Maria was sitting on the edge of the conference table when Max found her a few minutes later. “Maria, just the person I was looking for.”

She looked up and scowled at him. “What do you want?” she snapped.

“Did I come at a bad time?” he asked inocently.

She smiled, “Sorry Max. It’s that ass of a painter. If he spent as much time painting as he did trying to get into my pants, this place would be done by now!”

“Do you want me to sick Stonewall on him?” he joked.

“Like Michael would care if someone was trying to molest me. He’d probably buy front row tickets and sell popcorn.”

That’s what you think! “We can get another painter if you want,” he suggested.

“We can’t. He’s the best and the only one not working on that new condo complex outside of town. Don’t worry, if there’s one thing I can handle is jerks like him. I’m not my mother’s daughter for nothing. You said you were looking for me?”

He nodded. Looking back down the hallway, he closed the door and took a seat across from her. Seeing his seriousness, she dropped into a chair also. “Max what is is it?”

Running his hand thru his hair he said, “Liz.”

“Did she call? Is she okay?” she asked anxiously.

“No it’s nothing like that,” he reassured her. “It’s about me and Liz.”

“What about you and Liz?”

“I’m Aurora’s father.” he said quickly.

Her mouth dropped open in shock. Could it be that easy? She waited for him to continue, but when he didn’t she asked, “You were Zorro?”

“Yeah, but you have to understand, I didn’t know who she was!”

“Now that you do, do you regret it?”

“Never! I’ve been in love with Liz since the first moment I laid eyes on her.”

“When was that?”

“The Harvest Ball. She came in with Kyle and I was done. My sister is still laughing at my reaction to her.”

“So what’s the problem?”

“How am I going to tell her without her hating me forever?”

“You say you didn’t know it was her at the party?” He shook his head. “She knows that Kyle isn’t the father.”

“I know. I heard her fight with Kyle. After she went into the apartment, I beat the shit out of him.”

That’s why he didn’t contest the divorce.”

“They’re divorced already?”

“Yeah, she filed the day she got back from New York.” A thought struck her and she said, “You knew what happened. That was why you called me. I always wondered how you knew.”

“I got a call from one of my guys. I’ve been having Kyle watched. I knew he was up to something, but until then, I didn’t know what it was. I knew Liz would be a wreck, so I called you.”

“How did you know where to reach me?”

“Like I said, I was having Kyle watched and he went to the studio a few times. My guys are very good at what they do.”

Maria shivered. She didn’t relish the thought that she had been staked out. “You’ve call them off now, right?”

“Don’t worry. They were only to watch Kyle. But my problem remains the same. I’ve know Aurora’s mine since the day Liz first met with Kathy.”

“How?”

“She told me her due date.”

“Well if it makes you feel better, she’s glad it’s not Kyle’s.”

“I should hope so! He should pay for what he did to her.”

She nodded in agreement. “What we need is a plan.”

“That’s what Isabel said and the reason I’m here. I was hoping you’d help convince Liz to have diner with me or something. I’ve figured I should tell her the truth and let her decide what we do next.”

“Sound good to me. After all the lying Kyle did to her, she deserves the truth for a change. You ask her and I’ll make sure she goes.”

“Thanks Maria.”

“No problem. Just keep Michael away from me.”

“Deal!”

Well folks, this the last chapter, but don't dispair, there is an epilogue. Peace.

Chapter Thirteen

The following day, Max nervously paced his office. He had called and asked Liz to meet him this morning, when she arrived to check on the progress from the night before. The intercom buzzed and he nearly jumped out of his skin. “Yes?” he asked.

“Mrs. Valenti, uh sorry, Miss Parker, is here to see you.” his assistant, Loretta said.

“Send her in,” he replied, gruffly.

Liz opened the door and was surprised by Max’s appearance. His hair was standing away from his head in the most adorable fashion. Also, there were dark circles under his eyes and he looked tired. “Max, are you okay?” she asked, concern coloring her voice.

He gave her a smile and said, “No, everything's okay. Won’t you take a seat?”

Confused by his formality, Liz sat at the edge of the chair as he took the other and spun it to look at her. Something is wrong! she thought. I hope he’s okay.

“Liz, the reason I asked to see you was, uh I was wondering, that is, um, I wanted, oh hell!”

Liz placed her hand on his arm and said softly, “Just tell me, Max.”

His name sounded like velvet on her lips and Max steeled his spine and blurted, “Will you have dinner with me?”

Liz slid back in her seat. His outburst surprised her. He was nervous about asking me out on a date? she thought, silently thrilled. How sweet!

Max saw her pull back from him and thought all was lost. Despite Maria's assurance that she would go, he knew she didn’t return his feelings. If that were true, what will she do when I tell her about being Aurora’s father? Never want to speak with you again, fool!

Despair made him rash and he spat, “There are some things we need to discuss and I would rather not do them here.”

His tone made her angry and she replied, “What things? If it’s about my designing abilities, here would the perfect place to discuss them.”

“It has nothing to do with the stupid remodeling.”

“Then what?” she demanded.

“I love you, okay!” he shouted. “But I wanted to take you to a nice place and tell you in private.”

Liz’s mouth dropped open in astonishment. Max loved her? But how? When? her brain sputtered. Snapping her mouth shut, she licked her lips before whispering, “You love me?”

He ran his hand thru his hair and admitted, “Yeah. For quite a while now.”

“But I’m big and fat, not to mention pregnant with someone else’s baby,” she pointed out.

Smiling, he said, “Your beautiful. And about the baby, we really need to talk.” Taking her hand, he kissed the back, then rested it against his cheek.

His lip touching her skin sent rays off heat shooting thru her. “Do we have to wait for tonight?”

A thrill rushed thru him. Releasing her hand, he reached over and hit the intercom. “Loretta, cancel all my appointments. I’m taking the rest of the day off.”

Suppressing a laugh, Loretta replied, “Whatever you say Max.” Looking up at Doug and Kathy Masterson, she said, “Max is taking the day off.”

“So we heard,” Doug laughed.

“I think everyone on this floor did too,” Kathy said, chuckling. “Do you think we should move up the date?”

“Naw. Let’s give them some time to get use to each other first,” her husband replied. “They’ll be more than ready by the end of June, trust me.”

“I always do, when it comes to the matters of the heart. You knew I loved you months before I did!”

Placing a kiss on her brow, the two moved away from Max’s office with many envious looks following them.

###

Max brought Liz to his most favorite place. It was a jut of rock on the edge of the desert. He had gone there to scope a shooting sight with his sister and fell in love with it’s quintessence. Taking her hand, he led her to a flat spot and helped her down on the blanket he spread out.

“It's beautiful here,” she said, getting comfortable.

“Wait until you see it on a moonlit night,” he promised, sitting next her.

“Max..” “Liz..” they said together.

They laughed. “You go first,” she said.

“There’s something I need to tell you and I hope it won’t change the way, I hope, you feel about me,” he began, then fell silent. She motioned for him to continue. Taking a deep breath, he said, “I know that Kyle isn’t Aurora’s father.” He stopped at her gasp. Taking her hand, he finished, “I am.”

Liz thought his exclamation of love had been earth shattering. He was her baby’s father? “You were behind the mask?”

Looking to the top of the jute, he said, “Yes.”

“But that’s wonderful!”

His gaze shot back down to her face. “It is?”

“Do you know how many sleepless night’s I’ve had wondering who I spent that incredible night with? When I told you that it was the best I ever had, I wasn’t lying. Kyle was the only other man I ever made love with, and he never worshiped me like you did. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.”

“Me too, but I want you to know, that isn’t something I normally do. In fact that, to tell you the truth, that was my very first time.”

“It was? But how could someone be...,” she didn’t know how to finish.

“Twenty six and still a virgin?” he laughed. She nodded. “I was waiting for you.”

Tears welled up in her eyes. Taking his hand, she put it on her belly and said, “We’re glad you did.”

Leaning in close he said before his lips touched hers, “Me too, Liz. Me too.”

Okay, so here is the real end of the story, but I call it an epilogue cuz chapter 13 could have been the end, but we all know we want the fairy tail ending, so I gave it to ya! Anyway. I'm working on M&M's story and it's called Will Wonders Never Cease, so if you didn't get enough of M&L they are in there too. Thanks for taking time to leave feed back, it is the best compliment you can give an author.

Epilogue

“Can you please explain to me, why Doug insisted on a ‘Oscar Night’ theme for the unveiling?” Liz asked, as she and Max made their way slowly up the stairs to the front entrance of Metachem. She was in the beginning of her ninth month and getting around took a lot longer than it use to. “I look like a over ripe cherry.”

“You do not!” Max exclaimed. “I love you in red. That’s the color you were wearing when I fell in love with you.”

“Flatterer.”

“It’s the truth. As to the theme, you know Doug, he never does anything half way.”

Holding the door open for her, he placed his hand on her back and they entered the gaily bedecked lobby. “Surprise!” the assembled group called, and they stopped in shock.

Standing before them, were all their friends and family along with most of the two hundred employees of Metachem. At the end of an aisle, where the reception desk normally stood, was a flower draped arbor, with a man in a black suit under it.

“What?” Liz asked, looking up at her fiancé.

“I have no idea,” he replied.

Maria came rushing over to them and thrust a bouquet of roses into Liz’s hand. “Max, Michael is waiting up there for you,” she said, pointing over her shoulder at the fidgeting man next to the justice of the peace.

“Maria, what is going on?” Liz squawked, as her friend placed a small tiara with a gossamer veil attached to it, on the top of her head.

“It’s your wedding, silly,” she replied, standing back to check her handiwork.

“But we’re not getting married until after the baby is born!”

“That’s what you think,” Isabel said, coming up to them and giving her brother a push. “Up you go, little brother,” she said. Turning to Liz she said, “Welcome to the family.”

“Uh thanks, I think.”

“Maria, the music is all set,” a handsome man said quietly behind her. Maria turned and replied, “Thanks, Alex. Your a peach.”

Flashing the women a smile, Alex went and took his seat. “Alex huh?” Isabel inquired, her eyes riveted to the retreating figure. “You’ve been holding out on me, Maria.”

“But that’s only Alex,” she replied. The music began, and she said, “That’s your queue, Iz.”

Flashing them a million dollar smile, literacy, Isabel slowly walked up the aisle.

“I’m next, than you,” Maria instructed, picking up her bouquet from a near by table. “Make me proud.”

“Okay,” Liz replied, then it was her turn. Walking slowly, her eyes focused on Max and she knew all her childhood dreams had come true.

###

“Well you did it,” Kathy whispered, as Liz floated past them. “Again.”

Doug’s gaze was focused not on the bride, but on Maria and Michael who were giving each other dirty looks across the aisle, and he felt that old feeling blossom in his heart. He had thought he was done with his matchmaking for a while, but like always, there was another assignment just around the corner. Giving his wife a squeeze, he said, “I feel another challenge coming on.”

“God help them!” she prayed and turned her attention to the ceremony.

The End

AN: I hope you enjoyed Liz and Max’s story. While writing this, I decided to make this into a trilogy, so keep an eye out for Maria & Michael and Alex & Isabel in the near future. Doug has something up his sleeves for all of them and the money to back it up! ~Krys~
