“I’m Not In Love”
Date: May 04, 2003
Rating: M/L ADULT
Summary: Max Evans is perfect, the star of every girl's nightly dreams. He is handsome, sweet, kind, and everything a girl could want. Life is perfect until the day his old friend asks him for a favor, turning his life... and heart... upside down.
Liz Parker is that girl you always prayed you'd never be. She wears ugly clothes, has no friends, and is too smart for her own good. No guy has ever looked at her twice, scarring her worse than anything else could.
So when God-like Max starts hanging around her, his entire attention devoted towards her, her brain tells her something is up, but her heart.. well her heart thinks differently. With every look, every touch, Liz finds herself losing her heart to the one guy guaranteed to break it. But she can't help it.
Now, one question comes into play: does Max feel the same way or is he not in love?

PROLOGUE

Thirteen-year-old Liz Parker peeked slowly around the glass deck doors, her ugly glasses traitorously reflecting the sunlight. Holding her breath, Liz scanned the area, her heart picking up a thousand beats as her gaze landed on him.

Fifteen-year-old Max Evans had been Liz’s neighbor since the day she was born and Max and her older brother, twenty-three-year-old Alex, had grown up together. With his perfect brown hair and chocolate eyes, Max stole Liz’s breath away.

Liz watched with starry eyes as Max approached Tess, a fifteen-year-old blond-haired, blue-eyed beauty, who was also at the Parker’s Annual Neighborhood Barbeque. With cheeks tinted red from embarrassment, Max tapped on Tess’ shoulder, getting her attention. The teenager turned around, a smile lighting up her perfect face. Liz watched as the two talked and what Liz saw next sent a thousand knives flying straight into her heart. Max leaned closer to Tess and grabbed her hand, a goofy smile lighting his face.

Liz couldn’t watch any longer. Sharply, she turned around and ran straight into a large body. With tears pricking her eyes, Liz managed to rasp out a, “excuse me” before she attempted to flee to the safety of her room where she could cry her not-blue eyes out.

“Liz!” a familiar concerned voice called, grabbing her around the arms. “What’s wrong, Honeyeyes?”

The girl just shook her head, not wanting her older brother to see how upset she was. “I, I have to go!”

“But Liz, you’ve been hiding in your room for hours now! Mom and Dad are going to be really upset if you don’t go. Come on.”

“No, I don’t want to, Alex.”

“But -“

“Oh, leave her alone, Alex.”

Relieved to hear the voice of Isabel, Alex’s high school sweetheart, Liz looked up and turned around, throwing herself into Izzy’s arms.

“Whoa, sweetie, what’s wrong?” the older woman asked, sensing Liz’s pain. When she realized that Liz wouldn’t answer in front of Alex, Isabel took them upstairs to Liz’s room. Gently, she sat the crying girl onto the king-sized bed. Reaching out, Isabel tucked a strand of silky, brown hair behind Liz’s ear. Staring into Liz’s dark eyes which were speckled with sparks of honey, Isabel could see that something had genuinely upset the girl.

“Izzy?”

“Hmm?”

“Am I ugly?”

Isabel froze, not expecting to be asked that question, especially from such a beautiful person. Didn’t Liz see that behind her hideous glasses and out-of-style clothes was a gorgeous woman with a great personality? Only few people got to see the real Liz and Isabel knew she was blessed to be of those few.

Isabel shook her head, cupping Liz’s chin and tilting it up. “You are not ugly. You’re beautiful!” she paused as she saw the doubt in the young girl’s eyes. “I envy your thick, brown hair and sweet brown eyes!”

Liz shook her head, “I know you’re trying to be nice, Izzy, but honestly, I can handle the truth. I am not pretty and my hair and eyes are plain, plain, plain.” She turned away and whispered quietly, “I wish I had blond hair and blue eyes.”

Instantly, Isabel knew why. There was only one blond-haired, blue-eyed girl in the neighborhood: Tess Harding. But why would Liz want to be like ditzy, I-am-only-good-for-twirling-my-hair Tess? “Why do you want blond hair and blue eyes? Your hair and eyes are exotic.”

Liz felt her cheeks warming, even though she knew it was a lie; there was nothing about her that was exotic; she was just plain. “I, well, I just…”

“Hey, come on, Liz. This is me you’re talking to.”

Liz knew who she was talking to: Izzy, the only person she could ever really talk to since she had no friends because she was too ugly and shy and smart. But Izzy didn’t care that Liz was those things and when Liz was around her, well, Liz didn’t care about those things either.

“I, well, I want to be like Tess.” Mortified, Liz duck her head, her shiny brown hair blocking her bright face.

“But why, Honeyeyes? You’re so much prettier and sweeter and-“

“-Max likes her,” Liz blurted out, her eyes pleading with Izzy to understand.

“Oh!” Isabel had not been expecting that. It was odd that Liz had a crush on Max, odd to think of Max with anyone other than Tess because everyone thought that the two would end up together; that was just the way things were. But now that she thought about it, Max and Liz would make an adorable couple, their similar brown hair and brown eyes would fit so nicely together and their different personalities balanced one another out. It was a wonder that no one had thought of that before.

“Oh, Izzy,” Liz pleaded, “Please don’t tell anyone that I like Max! I know that everyone thinks that he and Tess are perfect, but I just can’t help it! He’s so cute and sweet and kind and-“

“Don’t worry, Liz, I won’t tell anyone.”

“Not even Alex? Oh, if Alex found out, he’d never stop teasing me!”

Isabel shook her head. “This is just between us; no one will ever know how you feel.”

PART ONE

“What?!” Max shouted, his eyes wide and unbelieving, “You have got to be out of your mind, Alex!”

“Oh, come on, Max,” Max’s long-time friend pleaded, his face serious.

“No!” Max shook his head, “No!”

“But, Max!”

“No, Alex! I can’t! She’s your goddamn little sister! Not to mention that I’ve know her since she was in diapers and-“

“She’s not in diapers now…”

An image of shy, mousy Liz popped into Max’s mind. No, she certainly wasn’t wearing diapers anymore and she was certainly not Max’s type. Max usually went for long-legged blondes with blue eyes, not plain brown-haired girls with ugly glasses and even uglier clothes. Not that Liz didn’t have a nice personality because she did… or at least Max thought so; he hadn’t ever really talked to her much, despite being such great friends with Alex. Alex, who, at this moment, was definitely losing his mind.

An hour ago, Alex had called Max and asked to meet him for lunch at Alex’s law firm. Ten minutes after Max arrived, Alex hit in with the biggie.

“Max, I need for you to do me a favor,” Alex had said.

“What is it?” Max hadn’t had a single idea what was in store for him next.

“I need for you to date Liz.” As Max remained speechless, Alex rushed on, “It’s her senior year and her prom’s coming up and you know Liz, she’s never had a boyfriend, never been on a date. Guys don’t like her because they think she’s too smart and not the most stylish person ever and girls hate her for the same reason. She’s lonely and I know how important the prom is, and well, I couldn’t think of anyone better to take her than you. I mean, you’ve known since she was born and I know you and Liz will get along perfectly because you guys have so much in common and-“

That was when Max had shouted, knowing Alex must have been drunk or high or something.

“Max?” Alex broke into Max’s thoughts. “Please, man, I really need you to do me this favor!”

Max took in a deep breath. “You want me,” he started, “to start hanging around your little sister, make her think I like her, date her, take her to prom, and then ditch her?!”

“Basically, but-“

“Alex, man, you are really something, you know. This will hurt her more than not going to prom. If she finds out, she’ll hate you forever and will probably kill me with one of her huge books!”

“I know, but Izzy and I are worried about her. And besides, Liz has had this huge crush on you since-“

“What?” Max made a mental note to get his hearing tested later because he was definitely having hearing problems.

“Oh, come on; don’t tell me you haven’t noticed. Liz has liked you since she first laid eyes on you and it’s so obvious,” Alex rolled his eyes, a childish gesture for a big-time, successful, twenty-eight-year-old lawyer.

Max hadn’t been expecting that. Liz, Elizabeth Parker, had a crush on him? They had barely ever seen one another, much less talked! This could get interesting… Wait! What the hell was he thinking? No, he shook his head, he would not go along with Alex’s crazy plan. No way.

Alex sighed, “I didn’t want to use this, but I guess I have no choice.”

Max shot the man across from him a suspicious frown. “Use what?”

“Do you remember,” Alex said, “four years ago when you and that older woman were caught at Make-Out Point and you both were almost arrested? Who came to your rescue and presented you? Hell, if it wasn’t for me, you’d probably still be in prison now and-“

Damn. “Fine!” Max shouted. “Fine. I’ll be part of your damn plan, but I’m telling you now, I don’t like it!” And with that, Max stormed out of Alex’s law firm, fuming, his fists itching to bury themselves in Alex’s face.

When Max was gone, Alex smiled and laughed out loud. “You may not like it now, Max, but you will, oh yeah, you most definitely will.”

PART TWO

“Oh, Liz! You look absolutely glamorous!” Isabel exclaimed, her eyes shining with excitement.

Liz, on the other hand, wasn’t as enthusiastic. “Are you sure about this, Izzy? I don’t know…. The shirt’s kind of low cut and the pants are really tight and-“

Izzy shook her head, knowing that this was the perfect outfit for Liz to be wearing when Max came to ask her out. Not that Liz knew this.

Izzy smiled as she watched Liz consciously try to tug the deep red halter top higher. The top accented her light skin and silky hair, not to mention that it also finally showed off some of her womanly curves. Giving up on the top, Liz squirmed around in the hip-hugging Abercrombie jeans, uncomfortable with the second skin.

“It looks beautiful on you, Liz! I’m so glad you finally agreed to let me pick out a new wardrobe for you! Your senior year is almost over and it’s about time you changed.”

“It’s not like you gave me much choice,” Liz muttered, her eyes once again resting on her reflection. She wasn’t used to these kind of clothes, but she had to admit that she liked the way they looked. Never before had she worn such revealing and stylish clothes. Maybe Max would be at Alex’s tonight for dinner; Liz wondered what he’d think, if he would even notice her.

Izzy ignored Liz’s sarcastic comment and beamed down at the young girl as she shoved another outfit in Liz’s arms. “Go,” she commanded, itching with excitement. She couldn’t wait to see how the white dress made of silk would look like on Liz’s perfect body. The minute Isabel had seen the dress, she had known that that dress would have to be the one Liz wore on her first date with Max. Isabel was so glad that Alex had gone along with her plan and that Max still owed her husband a huge favor for saving his ass those years ago.

Liz stalked into the dressing room, a frown on her face. But once she was behind closed doors, a smile lit up her face. Liz fingered the soft lace-covered silk, dying to try it on. But of course, Liz would never admit that; she didn’t want Isabel to know that she was actually enjoying this shopping spree and change. Liz knew no one liked her and she knew that she was ugly and that even with her new clothes, nothing would really change in her life, but Liz was grateful to Isabel for trying.

Liz gasped as she saw herself in the mirror through her glasses. She looked like an entirely different person! The dress was gorgeous! The straps, made of sheer pink ribbon were long, connected to the dress an inch above her cleavage. And the bottom of her bust was wrapped with a single strip of more ribbon. The dress reached just below her knees, ending in curved lace.

“Are you done, Liz?” Isabel yelled, slicing through Liz’s awed “moment.”

Gulping, Liz opened the dressing room door and stepped out into the light.

“Oh, migod, Liz!” Isabel shouted, jumping up and down as much as a six-month-pregnant woman could. “The dress is perfect, absolutely perfect! You look fabulous! Oh, I can’t wait!”

Liz frowned, confusion in her eyes. “You can’t wait for what?”

A guilty expression formed on Isabel’s face but a second later, it was gone. “I can’t wait until everyone sees the new you!”

“Well, maybe we could wait another week…”

“No! You are going to wear that outfit that you just tried on to dinner tonight! And on Monday, you are going to wear your other new clothes and knock everyone off of their feet. And, oh! We’ve got to hurry now because we have to stop by the optometrist and pick up your new contacts. You go in and change into that outfit and I’ll go pay.”

“What? Izzy, you never mentioned contacts! I don’t want to stick things into my eyes!”

“Oh, Liz, how can you have a complete transformation if you keep wearing those hideous glasses? You need contacts so that everyone can see your beautiful brown eyes.”

“No,” Liz shook her head, not believing that she had actually said “no” this many times. “I am not going to get contacts; the glasses stay.”

“Oh, Honeyeyes-“

“Don’t ‘Honeyeyes’ me! That will not work this time and-“

“Are you sure? The baby would like it so much when he or she opens his or her eyes for the first time and can look into their auntie’s pretty eyes and-“

“Oh, fine!” Liz nearly shouted, surprised at her outburst. It seemed as if the clothes were already changing her.

“Great!” Isabel screeched, clapping her hands. Before going to pay, she shoved Liz into the dressing room.

When she reached the register, the cashier asked politely, “Is your sister going for a big change?”

Isabel nodded, positively beaming with content. “Yes, she is. How did she look?”

“Oh, she’s beautiful! But honestly, I never would have guessed that underneath her glasses and baggy clothes was such a stunning girl!”

Isabel’s twinkling laughter echoed in the air, “It’s for a guy she likes.”

The cashier’s eyes sparkled as she said, “Isn’t it always?”

PART THREE

Holy shit. That was the only thing Max could think of when he saw Liz that night. Holy shit. No one had warned him that expecting the same, plain Liz was a very, very large error. Holy shit.

“Oh, hi, Max!” she beamed, her eyes twinkling in the dark moonlight.

Max just stood there like an idiot. He tried to make his gaping mouth work, he really did, but it just wasn’t obeying.

“Is everything all right?” Liz asked after a few seconds. Self-consciously, she tugged at her clothes, a blush tinting her cheeks. Did she really look that different? Was her glasses-free-and-ugly-clothes-gone, new look that outrageous?

“You... clothes… glasses…. Wow.”

Liz’s blush deepened. Thank God Max couldn’t see it in the dark. Liz squirmed, her eyes falling to the floor. Hearing the appreciation and wonder in Max’s voice was something new for her. She wanted to hide behind a tree or a bush, but at the same time, she wanted to hear him say it again.

“Ummm, I, I brought new clothes today and umm, I got contacts, too.”

“Wow,” his voice was husky and rough, sending shivers coursing through Liz’s body.

“I know it’s quite different from what I used to wear,” Liz rambled, “but Izzy insisted that it was finally time for me to, well, change and well, I kind of agreed with her, and well, yeah…” she trailed off. Her face felt like it was on fire as Max just stood there and stared at her, his eyes nearly falling out of the sockets and his mouth nearly touching the ground. It felt kind of nice, actually, to have Max Evans, the Max Evans, speechless before her.

“Max! Liz!” Alex called, coming out onto the deck. His face was full of worry and Liz immediately knew something was wrong.

“What’s wrong? Is it Izzy? Is she ok?” Liz asked, anxiously beginning to walk into the house. But before she even reached Alex, a strong, warm male hand reached out and grabbed her bare arm. She tugged in an attempt to free her arm from Max, but it wasn’t working. It must have been because of Max’s strength or the fact that Liz’s body suddenly melted and she found herself unable to do anything but inhale Max’s wonderfully-masculine scent.

“What’s wrong, Alex?” Max finally got his mouth to work, his body hardening as Liz’s floral scent teased at his senses.

“It’s Izzy. She’s not feeling well; she must have eaten something that upset her stomach during dinner.” Alex turned to Liz, “Liz, we won’t be able to drive you home tonight, but maybe,” he turned back to Max, “maybe Max will be able to.”

It took Max several long moments for his mind to empty itself of all the erotic possibilities of what could occur when he drove this sweet temptress home. When his mind finally accomplished that agonizing task, Max nodded, “Of course. Come on, Liz, how about we start heading out? It looks as if Alex would like to get back to Izzy now.”

Liz nodded, nervous at the thought of spending time alone with Max. In his car. In the dark. Right next to him.

“I’ll tell Izzy you guys said ‘good-bye,’” Alex informed them, giving Liz a brotherly hug, forcing Max to release his hold on her. “She’ll call you tomorrow.”

“Ok. Good-night.”

“Sweet dreams, Honeyeyes.”

And with that, Max led Liz out of the backyard to his sleek, silver Mercedes convertible in the driveway. Liz didn’t know how she got her legs to function with Max’s warm hand burning a sensual hole through the back of her shirt where it rested. He opened the door for her and helped her in. Unable to resist the opportunity, he leaned over her and buckled her in, too, going slowly in order to feel the softness of her body and smell her intoxicating scent. When he heard her quick intake of breath, he turned, finding his mouth millimeters from his. Fuck. Her lips parted like an invitation and before he knew it, his lips were on hers, hungrily delving.

Fireworks exploded. Lightening shot through their bodies. It seemed as if they had been waiting their whole lives for this moment.

Liz was in heaven, fireworks exploded between her and Max. She had never been kissed before, yet the moment Max’s lips touched hers, she instinctively knew what to do. Opening her mouth wider, she threw her arms around Max’s neck, her fingers losing themselves in his silky hair. Since as long as she could remember, Liz had had a fascination with Max’s hair. She had never thought she would get within feet of it, let alone have her hands tangled in it! She groaned, an unfamiliar, but wonderful feeling seeping into her body, an ache to get closer.

Shit. Max knew he shouldn’t be doing this, knew he had to go slowly, but well, tell his dick that. Reluctantly, Max yanked himself away, hastily closing the door and walking to the other side of it. He got into the car, started it, and they were off.

Liz could feel herself trembling with need, the delicious taste of Max still lingering in her mouth. Max hadn’t said a word to her since that earth-shattering kiss ten minutes ago; Liz was getting worried. What if he regretted it? What if he was disgusted? What if he thought she was inexperienced? Liz wrung her hands together, gnawing at her lower lip. Should she say something? Should she apologize?

No, she decided. She had never lied to Max before and she didn’t intend to start now.

Finally, they reached her house. The porch light was still on which meant that her parents had already gone to sleep.

Liz took Max’s hand when he offered it to her after opening the door. Still holding her hand, they walked silently towards the door, the cool night brushing against their skin.

“Liz?”

Liz turned around, the key still in the lock. “Yes?” Her pulse picked up about, oh, a thousand beats.

“I was wondering, if you’re not busy tomorrow night, maybe we could go out for a movie and dinner. How about Italian? I know how much you like pasta.”

He did? Liz was too astonished to answer. Did Max Evans just ask her out? For a real date? She was about to say “yes” when suspicion kicked in. Why, now, after 18 years, was Max suddenly so interested in her? Was he really interested in her… or the Liz dressed in these clothes?

“Umm, I don’t think so, Max. That wouldn’t be a good idea; I’ve got exams to study for and well, maybe some other time.”

Liz wished she had a camera. The shock on Max’s face at being rejected was priceless. But he quickly regained his composure.

“Right,” he nodded briskly. “Sure, some other time. Night.”

“Night,” Liz whispered sadly as she watched Max Evans walk out of her life.

PART FOUR

It wasn’t supposed to be that good… not with Liz at least. Max wasn’t supposed to have felt like he was clinging onto the back of a rocket soaring through space when his lips had touched Liz’s. He wasn’t supposed to have wanted her so badly, his body wasn’t still supposed to be craving for hers.

No one had told him. And damnit, they should have.

It was less than 24 hours later and Max couldn’t wait to see her again. He was obsessed with her and he knew it. He couldn’t get her out of his mind; she was driving him crazy!

He got it! What better way to stop thinking about seeing her than actually seeing her? Why, he wasn’t doing anything at that moment, why not stop by her house and ask her for a casual lunch? Yup, that was exactly what he’d do.

Grinning like a fool, Max slammed the door to his dorm quickly behind him and jogged to his parking spot. Max was just seated into his Mercedes when he saw Tess walking towards him. He groaned and closed his eyes. Not now; he didn’t want to deal with her now.

“Hey, Max!”

Oh, God, she wasn’t going to go away, was she?

Max opened his eyes and smiled at her, not wanting to hurt her anymore than he already had when he had broke up with her. Despite her ditziness and lack of actual personality, she had a good heart and Max hated knowing that he had broken it. “Hey, Tess. How are you?”

She grinned at him, her white teeth dazzling. That smile used to steal Max’s breath away, but now, all it did was make him think of Liz’s heart-stopping smile, the one she had given him the night before on Alex’s deck. “I’m fine, Max! Just great!”

She wasn’t and Max knew it, but didn’t know what to do about it. “That’s ummm, great, great.” He looked at the key, almost in the ignition, and his hand itched to start the car and race off to Liz’s.

“Max,” Tess said softly, her eyes pleading. “I was wondering, well, the crew and I are going clubbing at that new club that just opened, you know, the Crashdown, and well, I was wondering if you’d like to join us… you know…”

Oh, God. Not again. How many times had Max told her that they were through? “I can’t, Tess, you know that. I just can’t.”

“Oh,” her sky-blue eyes turned dark with pain. “Well, why not?”

Max said the first thing that came into his mind…. It wasn’t the right thing. “Liz! I, umm, I have a date with Liz.”

“Liz?!” Tess’s eyes widened in surprise. “Liz Parker?”

Max nodded, suddenly more than a little uncomfortable with the change in Tess’s eyes; they went from pained to surprised to seething with jealousy.

Tess just stared at him for a few moments, her hands clenched together in fists at her sides. “Why don’t you bring her along?” she asked, her words edged with anger, “I’m sure everyone will just love to see how you two are together.”

Max was sure that the exact opposite was true. “Sure,” he said before he could think better of it. “Well, I’ve got to go. I’ll see you tonight then. What time?”

“Nine,” Tess muttered through clenched teeth.

“Great. See you there.”

As Max drove off, he knew the trouble he was in. First of all, he didn’t want everyone seeing him with Liz because it was all a bet and, well, yeah, it was all a bet. And second of all, there was still the little problem of having her agree to go out; she definitely hadn’t sounded like she wanted to. What was it that she said she had to do tonight? Study for exams? Damn. What self-respecting girl would spend a Saturday night studying? Liz, apparently, his mind answered him.

Before he knew it, Max was parked in front of Liz’s large mansion on a house, almost identical to his parents’s house down the street. Max walked up to the door and knocked, gulping continuously.

“Hey, Izzy! You’re early; I wasn’t expecting you for another…” Liz’s voice and smile quickly died off, her eyes widening in astonishment. “Umm, Max. Hi! What are you, ummm, doing here?” She stepped outside and closed the door behind her.

“Hey, Liz,” Max answered, his eyes greedily taking her in. She looked so delectable there, standing in her baby-pink Capri’s and matching halter top and flip flops. Max just wanted to spread whip cream all over her and lick it up, inch by inch.

“Max, you really shouldn’t be here. Izzy will be here any second now and-“

“-Will you go clubbing with me tonight?” Max blurted out, running a hand through his hair.

“Oh, Max, you know I can’t. I told you, I have to, I have to study tonight and-“

“With Izzy? Last time I checked, Izzy had graduated a long time ago.”

Liz chewed her lower lip, her eyes downcast.

Max suddenly knew she didn’t really have to study and that for some reason, despite wanting to go with him, she was holding back. He stepped closer and cupped her chin in his hand, tipping it up. He waited until her eyes met his. “Liz, why won’t you go out with me tonight?” He saw that she was about to answer, another lie, no doubt. “No, Liz, not another lie. I want the truth. Why won’t you go out with me, Liz?”

Liz wanted to tell him, once again, that she had to study, but staring into his eyes, Liz knew she couldn’t do it. “Max, why are you really asking me out? Why now? I mean,” she paused, “you know I’ve had this like, huge crush on you for like ever, but why now? Why not last year or next year or-“

“-Because I was a fool. I didn’t see what was right in front of me the whole time. Please forgive me for my stupidity, but what can I say? I’m a guy,” he smiled sheepishly.

Liz knew she was lost. If Max asked her to jump off a cliff, she would do it. “Ok,” she whispered, “I’ll go with you tonight.”

The corners of Max’s mouth turned upwards, his eyes shining. “Great! We’re going to the Crashdown and we’re going to meet Tess and Kyle and them there and then-“

“What?! Oh, no, Max, no. Not Tess; I just couldn’t. Everyone knows that she still loves you and-“

“Please, Liz. For me,” he added with a small smile. “Tess knows that it’s over between me and her and that you’re my girl now.”

His girl. Liz melted, literally.

Everything turned black as Liz crumpled onto the floor.

PART FIVE

“I told you to ask her out for a date,” Alex said through gritted teeth, “not kill her!”

Max just shook his head, sensing his friend’s anger. “I didn’t kill her, Alex. She just fainted. She’s fine; I mean, she woke up a minute later.”

“I don’t think this was a good idea,” Alex sighed, burying his face into his hands.

Oh, no. Max had a feeling Alex was going to pull back his favor and there was no way in Hell Max would let that happen, not when he was so close to being close to Liz.

“No, Alex. Whatever you’re going to say, keep it to yourself. Liz and I are going out tonight and we are going to have a great time.” Max would make sure of it, even if it killed him.

Alex raised his head, shaking it from side to side. “Max, maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. I mean, no matter how much Izzy and I care about Liz, we had no right interfering this way and-“

“-You just wanted what was best for her…. And so do I. You were right, Liz is a wonderful woman and she’d make any man the happiest in the world and-“

“Whoa, whoa!” Alex’s eyes glittered with amusement. “If I didn’t know better, Max, I’d say you were, well, falling for my little sister!”

Max’s eyes widened as he shook his head furiously. “No, no, not me, I-“

“-You did just say that she’d make any man the happiest in the world. That man could be you, huh?”

Max’s head continued shaking like a dog, “No. When I said any man, that didn’t mean me, because I’m never, ever going to fall for any woman, not again, not after that whole thing with Tess. I’m not in love and I’ll never be again.”

“Max, I’ve said it a thousands times before and I’m going to say it a thousand times again: you were never in love with Tess. You just thought you were because she was the first thing that came along and everyone thought you two should be in love. You never loved her and she never loved you.” Alex waited a few moments for that to sink in before continuing, “Liz, on the other hand, has loved you for the longest time and-“

“-That wasn’t love; that was infatuation. You can’t love someone at such a young age.”

“You obviously don’t know Liz very well. She defies all logic and-“

“Alex? Max?” Isabel called, knocking briefly before entering into her living room.

Alex’s eyes lit up as his pregnant wife dawdled into the room, situating herself comfortably onto the couch next to him. They both sighed contentedly as she snuggled into his side.

“Is Liz ready yet?” Max asked eagerly, though still bothered by Alex’s comments. But he shook them off, like rain off a coat; he wasn’t going to fall in love with Liz because he was never going to love again. So, he had no problem, right? Besides, just because he was obsessed with the scent of her and the feel of her soft skin didn’t mean he was in love. Obsession and love were two very different things.

Isabel nodded slowly, weary from running around trying to help an overly-excited Liz dress for her first date. “But you can’t pick her up yet. She made me promise to keep you here for another hour or so.”

“Why?” Max nearly shouted. So what if they didn’t have to meet the crew at the Crashdown for another 3 hours? And so what if his reservations for Romilio’s, the Italian restaurant Liz supposedly loved, wasn’t for another hour and a half?

“Max,” Isabel scolded while laughing inside, “Liz knows the reservations aren’t for another hour and a half and so she’s taking her time now. Besides, she was humiliated beyond belief, fainting in front of you like that for a reason you really don’t need to know about. When I left, she was getting ready for a bubble bath.”

Oh, God. Erotic images of Liz’s naked body barely concealed by transparent bubbles fluttered through Max’s mind. And then even more flooded into his head as he pictured himself in there with her, caressing her silky skin and kissing her wet body.

Isabel, apparently unaware of the turmoil Max was in, announced, “That sounds so nice; I want to go take a bubble bath, too. Alex, will you help me?”

Alex jumped eagerly at her request, “Of course. Bye, Max,” he pushed Max out of the living room and out the front door. He ignored Max’s protests that he had nowhere to go and smiling, Alex slammed the door in Max’s face.

“Honey? I need help getting my clothes off,” Isabel called, no hint of desire in her tone.

Alex could easily change that, he thought, smiling to himself. As he climbed up the steps, he couldn’t help thinking that even though his wife was rounded with six months of pregnancy, she was still the most delectable thing around.

PART SIX

Max’s eyes hungrily devoured the sexy-as-sin sight before him. Holy shit. His cock hardened painfully in his suddenly-too-tight pants.

Liz was a goddess; Max was sure of that now. She was sent down to Earth to lure unsuspecting men like himself to death due to hard dicks. Yes, that was most definitely it; it had to be. Look at her, damnit. That was the only realistic reason.

Liz stood in front of him, dazzling hot in her hot-pink tube dress. God, that dress was so low and so short, Max was sure she must have found it in the little girls’ section. No, make it the infants’ section.

“Hi, Max,” Liz greeted, her smile wide and as sultry as ever, though still innocently shy.

Max couldn’t seem to make his dumb mouth work; it just worked up and down, not a single word coming out. Liz’s siren-like dress clashed so greatly with her pureness that it nearly knocked Max over.

“So, where are we going to eat?” Liz asked timidly, biting on her lower lip as she closed the door behind them and grabbed onto Max’s strong arm.

Max’s gaze flew to her lips. He nearly groaned aloud when her pink tongue peeked out and licked at her dry lips. Max wanted to be the one licking her lips and before he knew it, he was.

Liz’s gasp of surprise was muffled by Max’s lips crashing onto hers. Sighing, she wrapped her arms around his neck, her hands playing with hair. Liz pressed closer to Max, her breasts pressed flush up against Max’s hard chest. Her whole body tingled as she wondered if this was the way it always was when people kissed. Something told her that it wasn’t; that it was only this good because it was Max kissing her.

Max pulled Liz closer, if that was even possible. His hands tangled themselves into her silky hair. His body was so taut with desire that when Liz’s stomach brushed against his erection, Max seriously thought he was going to explode (talk about premature ejaculation).

“Liz! Don’t forget your cardigan! It’s very cold out…. Oh.”

Liz pulled away from Max’s embrace as if he was on fire. “Mom!” her voice was hoarse with desire.

Mrs. Parker stood there, blinking in surprise. It wasn’t every day that she found her sweet little girl profusely making out with a boy, no matter how sweet and kind, whose reputation of being of a playboy preceded him.

Blushing furiously, Liz grabbed the silk cardigan from her mother, and after a quick “good-bye,” dragged Max to his convertible.

“Bye, Mrs. Parker!” Max shouted, knowing he was in deep shit. His mother and Liz’s mother were best friends and there was no way in Hell that Mrs. Parker would not tell his mom about what she saw.

“Max,” Liz started, “about earlier… I’m really sorry; I don’t know what got into me. I guess I was just really surprised at you calling me, well, what you called me and-“

“Hey, it’s ok. As long as you’re ok, we’ll just forget about it.”

Liz nodded, feeling as if a boulder had been lifted off of her shoulders. “So, where are we going?” Liz asked once they had set off.

“Romilio’s,” Max answered, throwing a quick glance her way.

“Romilio’s?! Oh, I love that place!” Liz declared excitedly, her eyes twinkling with delight.

“I know,” Max smiled, suddenly feeling Liz’s excitement, “That’s why we’re going there…. Just for you, Honeyeyes, just for you.”

Liz gasped. Honeyeyes. That was the first time that Max had ever called her by her childhood nickname. It sent a shiver of excitement coursing through her body. She prayed that she wouldn’t faint again. She couldn’t just keep on fainting every time Max called her something sweet; it couldn’t possibly be healthy.

“You know, Honeyeyes,” Max winked, “your eyes really do have specks of honey in them. Just like you, they’re sweet and, just in case you wanted to know, I love honey.”

It was enough to make a girl faint….

But this time, Liz managed to hold on to her consciousness.

The rest of the ride passed in easy conversation. Max learned that Liz’s favorite color was pink, she loved roses, and was a teeny-bopper at heart. Liz learned that Max’s new favorite color was honey, he hated flowers because they gave him allergies, and even more than flowers, he hated teeny-boppers. But, he added, teeny-boppers with honey-colored specks in their eyes were ok. Before they knew it, they had reached Romilio’s.

Max and Liz ate quickly and in comfortable chatter. Several times, Liz wanted to ask Max about his former relationship with Tess, but it just didn’t seem like the right time. Instead, Liz focused on how attentive and sweet Max was. He knew the right things to say to get her to relax and he always sent those unexpected hot looks her way.

After dinner came the Crashdown.

Liz’s eyes widened in awe as she took in the bright neon green lights and flashing strobes. She let Max lead her inside; his hand on the small of her back was the only thing reminding her that she had not stepped into some alternate universe.

“Max! Over here!” a very feminine voice called over the loud music.

Max’s head shot towards the voice. He let out a groan as he saw Tess there with everyone: Kyle, Michael, Maria, Alexis, Isabella… everyone. He had wanted to let Liz slowly absorb his crew, but thanks to Tess, that wasn’t going to happen. Instead, the poor girl was going to meet them all head-on.

Liz watched Max greet everyone and then, before she was ready, he turned and introduced her. Liz tried to remember everyone’s names, but that didn’t work very well; there was just too many of them. A blush crept onto her cheeks as one of the guys (Kyle?) winked suggestively at her, earning a not-so-gentle punch from Max. When Tess came over to greet Liz, Liz’s eyes widened even more as she saw what Tess was wearing. When Isabel had insisted that Liz wear this hot pink tube dress, Liz was doubtful; she thought it might have been too scandalous. It turned out that it wasn’t at all; actually, compared to Tess’s five-inch-wide strap of fabric across her breasts and separate ten-inch-wide strap of fabric across her lower regions, Liz was very much covered. Liz could feel herself growing green with jealousy. Tess was obviously very used to having everyone’s attention focused on her, especially Max’s. But, if Max noticed Tess’s indecent attire, he didn’t mention it. Instead, he slung an arm around Liz’s shoulder and hauled her off to the dance floor before Kyle could ask her.

“Wait, Max!” Liz shouted over the music, halting and tugging on Max’s hand.

Max turned around and took Liz’s petite body into his arms, sighing with content. This was the way things were meant to be.

“Max, please!” Liz’s eyes were downcast, “I don’t know how to dance.”

Max just smiled and helped her find the rhythm.

Several hours and many grinding dances later, Liz sat in Max’s lap, sipping an alcoholic beverage Max had ordered for them. Liz had never drunken alcohol before and she found that she didn’t really like its taste, but if Tess was drinking, then Liz was, too.

“Hey, Liz? Are you sure you should be drinking so much? It’s a little strong,” Max warned, noting her unfocused eyes and hiccups.

“I’m fine, Maxie,” she cooed flirtatiously, not able to really grasp reality. Max’s concerned face swam before her eyes, making her dizzy.

“No,” Max shook his head, a feeling of dread washing over him, “You are not fine. Come on, Honeyeyes, I think it’s time that I took you home.”

Liz shook her head, immediately regretting it as her stomach lurched in protest. “I want to stay and dance more,” she hiccupped.

Taking her hand, Max quickly said their good-byes. When Liz resisted, Max gallantly swept her up into his arms and carried her out of the booming nightclub. When he tucked her into his Mercedes and got in, Liz giggled.

“Liz, I think you’re drunk.”

She just giggled some more.

“Yeah, you are definitely drunk.” He started the car and muttered under his breath, “They’re going to kill me.”

One minute, he was about to back the car out and the next, Liz was on top of him and his lips were dueling hotly with hers. He moaned, his hands tangling themselves into her hair. The kiss grew steamier and steamier, fogging up the car windows until Liz started grinding against Max’s harder-than-stone erection. Max couldn’t help himself; he thrust back, mimicking a very different sort of dance, a dance that was usually done in the bedroom, for hours upon sweaty hours, a dance he would be more than happy to teach Liz.

“Take me home with you, Maxie,” Liz pleaded, her tongue tracing Max’s upper lip.

Liz’s plea for him to take her to bed snapped Max back into reality. This was moving far too quickly for her and, if he was honest with himself, for him, too. He needed time to deal with the intense things she made him feel; he needed time to guard himself against feeling anything but lust and desire for this sexy bundle in his arms. Groaning, Max removed Liz from his arms and placed her back in the passenger seat. She resisted, throwing her arms around his neck and nipping at the sensitive area behind his ear he hadn’t known existed until now.

“I don’t have to go home tonight; Mom and Dad think you’re dropping me off at Izzy’s. She said she’d cover for us.”

Oh, God. How was he supposed to not take her to bed now and not make love to her until they both died from exhaustion?

“If you take me to Izzy’s, she’ll know that I failed and I can’t be a failure again, I just can’t,” Liz cried, sudden tears flowing down her cheeks and tearing at Max’s heart.

“Alright, alright. Come on, then Honeyeyes. Let’s go to my dorm.”

Liz’s sparkling grin told him that he had just probably made the second biggest mistake of his life. The first was agreeing to Alex’s stupid favor.

PART SEVEN

Liz groaned, her body protesting as she rolled over in bed. Her eyes shot open as she felt herself pressed flush up against a very strong, very masculine, very naked body.

“Oh, migod!” her mind screamed frantically. Did she? Did they? With Max? Liz tried to force herself to remember what happened last night. Ignoring the throbbing pain in her head, she pushed her mind… only to remember nothing. Wait, that wasn’t true. Liz did remember the ride home and begging Max to take her to his dorm because- Oh, migod. Frantically, Liz pushed herself away from Max’s warm body and sat up, a very big mistake. Her head immediately began to spin again.

“Whoa, Liz. Calm down,” Max’s still-sleepy voice said as he reached out to steady her swaying body. Laying her down, he leaned over her and smiled, “Hurts like a mother, huh? I tried to get you to stop drinking, even warned you ahead of time about hangovers, but you wouldn’t listen. Did you know that you can be really stubborn at times?”

Liz shook her head and groaned, closing her eyes. It was only when Max had sat up that she realized he still had his boxers on and that she had on a large T-shirt and boxers which were rolled-up a couple of times. But if they hadn’t…

“Max?” Liz asked, her cheeks turning a bright pink, “Did we? I mean, well, ummm, last night-“

“No,” Max stated firmly, shaking his head. Then he let out a killer grin, “Although you were begging me to.”

Liz’s eyes widened in surprise and mortification as she tried to push herself up and away from Max’s penetrating gaze.

“Relax, Liz,” Max held her down, “I don’t take advantage of girls, especially not you. Nothing happened. I carried you in here, changed you into some of my clothes, and then we just went to sleep. I promise, Scout’s Honor.”

Liz could feel a smile threatening to break through the tears which also wanted to escape, “Oh, Max. You’re not even a Boy Scout!”

He grinned sheepishly, making him seem almost boyish, “I know, I know, but I’ve always wanted to be one, doesn’t that count?”

“No!” Liz laughed, smacking him playfully on the chest.

“Whoa,” Max drawled out, pretending to be insulted. “Are you laughing at me? Are you laughing at me?” he asked in a fake New York accent.

“What if I am?” Liz’s eyes glittered with excitement.

“No one gets away with insulting Maxwell Evans, not even someone as beautiful as you, Honeyeyes!” And with that last shout, Max proceeded to tickle Liz senseless.

“No, Max! Stop!” she giggled, wriggling under Max in a poor attempt to escape his questing fingers.

He didn’t, much to her dismay. While tears formed in her eyes, Max’s grin lit up the room. At last, he had her pinned down on the mattress, too weak to do anything but submit.

“Liz?” Max asked, running his fingers from her forehead and down her slender neck.

“Hmm?” she replied, shivering at the hot trail his fingers left behind.

“I like you. A lot.” Wow, how poetic.

Liz stared dreamily into his dark eyes. “I like you a lot, too.”

His ear-to-ear grin sent Liz’s heart skipping several beats. “That’s good,” he nodded, “Very good.”

Then, his lips covered Liz’s and all she could think was that yes, it was very good indeed.

PART EIGHT

“Well? What happened last night? Tell me, tell me, tell me!”

Liz, blushing furiously, gently tried to extract her arm from Isabel’s tight grasp. “Izzy, please! Nothing happened!”

Isabel rolled her eyes. “Do you really expect me to believe that? With Max, who is known for his playboy, sexual appetite and you, in that killer dress I picked out for you? Ha!”

Liz’s blush deepened, forming two dark spots on her smooth cheeks. She hissed at Isabel, “Izzy! Lower your voice! Everyone’s going to hear you!”

After Max had dropped Liz off at home, Isabel had come over a few minutes later. The two decided to head out for some light lunch at a café; little did Liz know that Isabel would also then be announcing to everyone in Roswell that Liz hadn’t had sex with Max Evans.

Isabel shook her head, unable to believe that nothing had happened. She and Alex had planned it all out, although Alex didn’t really like the part about Liz sleeping with Max…. Actually, he hated it, covering both of his ears with his hands for the twenty minutes Isabel had tortured him with it. There was no way that Max couldn’t have made a move on Liz! Liz was beautiful and Max was already madly in love with her, even if he didn’t see it!

“Izzy, nothing happened. Max and I did not, we didn’t…. We didn’t. Look, let’s just forget it, ok? I don’t want to take the chance of someone finding out and making fun of Max-“

“-What’s this about making fun of Max? Now, who would do such a thing?”

Liz’s gaze shot upward and her breath caught in nervousness and fear.

Tess stood there, as perfect as ever in her low-cut, blue T-shirt and her white mini-skirt. Not even a single strand of hair was out of place.

Liz, on the other hand, knew her hair was falling out of her loose ponytail and that her Roswell high sweatshirt and flares were far from stylish.

“Hi, Tess,” Liz greeted, biting her lower lip.

Tess gave Liz’s grungy clothes the once-over, a not-greatly-disguised disgusted look on her face. “Hi, Liz, Isabel. So, what were you saying about Max?”

“Umm,” the two spots on her cheek returned, “Nothing. Nothing at all.”

“Really?” Tess didn’t believe it for a second, “’Cuz it sounded like you didn’t want him knowing that every knows that he failed to seduce a little girl like you.”

Liz saw red. “Max was not trying to seduce me! He’s sweeter than that and he wouldn’t ever try to do something like that; he told me!”

Tess’s laugh was more like a cackle. “Do you really believe that? Do you really think that’d he’d actually want to be with you? Right, like in your dreams! Can’t you see that he obviously wants something from you? I guess his taste has gone to little, innocent virgins.”

With that, Tess walked out, leaving a very upset Isabel, who knew that she shouldn’t get overworked because it wasn’t good for the baby, and Liz, whose tears blurred her vision so greatly that she barely saw Tess leave.

Tess was right. Liz was too innocent and a virgin…. But Liz could change that. And she was going to start tonight.

PART NINE

“I’m coming, I’m coming!” Max shouted. Damn, people these days were so impatient, like that person knocking at his door right now. Groaning, Max got up from the couch, fleetingly considering putting some clothes on over his boxers and white undershirt.

Max threw open the door.

Liz launched herself at him.

“Mwarf?” Max’s surprise was muffled by Liz’s oh-so-distracting lips devouring his. It was pure instinct, his wrapping his arms tightly around Liz.

The door slammed shut behind them as they hurriedly grabbed at each other’s clothes, ripping the garments off without thought. Pure, hot passion erupted between them, a volcano made to wait for too long. They moaned together as the lava erupted, the burning hot heat sending them up in flames. They tumbled onto the couch, embraced in one another’s arms.

Max’s lips moved from Liz’s lips to the clasp of her baby pink bra, leaving a wet trail behind. When his teeth undid the little button, Liz gasped and held his head to her body, not wanting him to stop. He didn’t. Expertly, he removed the sweetly innocent undergarment, throwing it behind him…. And sat back to admire the view.

Liz’s breath hitched as she opened her eyes to see Max staring intently at her breasts. Her skin flushed darker as the seconds ticked by. She gnawed at her lower lips, afraid that Max was disappointed. Even through her sexual haze, she knew that her breasts weren’t big or fantastic. Suddenly ashamed at her actions, Liz began to cover herself.

But Max wouldn’t let her. He grabbed her hands and gently moved them to her sides, his eyes finally leaving her chest. He swallowed. “You’re beautiful,” he whispered, staring into her eyes.

And at that moment, she really believed him. She was beautiful. And she loved Max. Oh, God, she knew then that she really did. She had always loved him, but had never really known him. Now, she really knew him, knew how sweet and caring he was, how his playboy image was just that, an image. She knew him and she loved him, a deep, soulful love that would carve out her heart for the rest of her life. A love that would leave her heart shattered for eternity and would stain her face with everlasting tears. She loved him with her whole being and knew with whole being that her love would never be returned.

“Liz? Oh, Honeyeyes, don’t cry. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you,” Max’s voice was full of concern.

Shaking her head was all Liz could manage. She knew Max didn’t mean to hurt her, knew he would never deliberately hurt anyone, but he had. He let her fall in love with him when they both knew that she was just his plaything for the next few weeks or until he got tired of her.

Max couldn’t figure out what was wrong. He saw the tears flowing down his sweet Liz’s beautiful face, saw the pain etched in her eyes; it sent knives through his heart. He didn’t want to see her hurt. Liz didn’t deserve any pain, any suffering; she was too sweet, too much of an angel, an angel sent down to earth for him and him alone. Max shook his head, not wanting to think about what Liz meant to him; he wasn’t ready for that yet.

“Come on,” Max sat up, rummaged around and found her bra. Tenderly, he put it back on her and wrapped her up in a light blanket that was on the couch. Whispering sweet nothings in her ear, he led her down the hall and into his bedroom. After he sat her down on his bed, he went into his drawers to find her a T-shirt and another pair of his boxers. When he handed the clothes to her, he informed her, “I’m going to go and get us a nice cup of hot cocoa while you change, ok? Then we’ll talk.”

Liz nodded and watched Max walk out of the room. Sniffling, she shrugged out of her bra and shorts and put on Max’s clothes. Tears filled her eyes once again as she inhaled the scent of Max through his T-shirt. What if she never got to smell that again? What if she never got the chance to slip into his large T-shirt and roll up his boxers to fit her again? Liz didn’t think she could handle it.

“Liz?”

Liz’s gaze snapped towards the door where Max had just entered through, holding two steaming cups of hot cocoa. Somehow, she managed a grin, and took the cup Max offered.

Max could see that her eyes were still watery and he just felt so… helpless. He didn’t know what was wrong, so he couldn’t fix it. He had a feeling that asking Liz wouldn’t help, but would, most likely, only make her feel worse. He sat down on the bed and gathered Liz into his lap.

For minutes they just sat there together, sipping their hot drinks, not saying a word. Liz was busy memorizing every detail she could and Max was busying watching her.

Finally, when Max had finished his drink, he set it aside and asked quietly, “Are your parents expecting you home tonight?”

Liz shook her head, “I told them I was staying at Alex’s.”

“Oh.”

And then it was silent again.

“Max?”

“Hmm?”

“I, well, I’m not ready yet.”

A frown appeared on his face, lines of worry stretching on his forehead. “Ready for what?”

Oh, God. Was he really going to make her say it? She took a deep breath, “I’m not ready to, well, to lose my virginity yet.”

Max’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. His mouth worked up and down, but nothing came out.

Liz panicked. “Oh, migod! Are you choking?” Frantic, Liz began to thump Max on the back. It wasn’t until he stilled her movements that she noticed that he wasn’t choking at all, just speechless.

Finally, Max managed to gain a hold of his voice. He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry; he was so confused. “Liz, sweetheart, you’re not going to lose your virginity tonight, I promise. You’re not ready and hell, I’m not exactly ready yet either.”

Now it was Liz’s turn to be surprised. “You mean, you mean you’ve never had sex before?” she whispered, stunned beyond belief.

Max’s laughter rocked the bed as he buried his face into Liz’s strawberry-scented hair. “Liz, I have most definitely had sex before. I meant that I wasn’t ready to umm, for lack of better word, deflower you yet.”

“Oh,” Liz’s eyes filled with those stupid tears again.

Max immediately noted his mistake. “No!” he shouted, turning Liz’s head so that he could look into her eyes, “I didn’t mean that I wouldn’t want to because I do. God, do I. But now’s not the time, you know?” Max could not believe he was having this conversation.

Liz nodded, “I’m so sorry, Max. I don’t know what’s gotten into me. I’ve been crying on and off all day for no reason at all.”

“You’re tired,” Max stated as he noticed the weariness in her eyes. “Let’s get you into bed, Honeyeyes. Then, tomorrow, how about we go check out Maria’s concert at the Pavilion? You want to?

“Oh, I’d love to! Everyone’s always raving on about how great of a singer she is. I just haven’t had anybody to go to a concert with.”

Max smiled. “You’ll never not have someone again, Liz. You’ll always have me.” And then he leaned down and kissed her forehead tenderly, an act so simple, yet filled with so much love, that Liz knew she was dreaming. Max wasn’t in love, no, not at all.

PART TEN

“Maxwell Evans, you are sunk,” Alex announced.

After his morning class, Max had decided to stop by Alex’s firm to ask him to join him for lunch. Somehow, they had gotten onto the subject of Liz.

“I am not ‘sunk,’ Alex!” Max announced back. “Yes, I like your sister very much, but man, that doesn’t mean that I’ve gone and fallen in love with her!”

Alex was shaking his head, amusement in his eyes. “Max, ever since you’ve laid eyes on the new Liz, you’ve dropped your playboy ways, spend every second with her, you don’t want anybody else, and-“

“-I am not in love!” Max shouted, sure that everyone in the building had heard him.

“Why are you denying it? If you’d just admit it, everyone could rest in peace. Besides, you have nothing to worry about, Liz is head over heels in love with you.”

“Really?” Max sat up eagerly in his chair. Why did the sudden knowledge that Liz could love him send Max’s heart zooming a thousand miles per hour?

Alex let out a quick laugh and walked over to Max, slapping him on the back. “You are sunk, Max, sunk.”

“Alex, for the last time, I am not-“

“-Excuse me, sir, but your one o’ clock is waiting,” Alex’s secretary’s voice interrupted Max’s rant.

“Yes, thank you,” Alex responded into the intercom. Turning back to the very frustrated Max, Alex smiled, “Sorry, Max, but work calls.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Max shook his head and walked out. Since he still hadn’t had lunch, he walked the streets of Roswell, looking for a good place to grab a quick meal. Suddenly, he halted. His eyes were drawn to the red roses in the window display, surrounded by small white flowers. Liz’s favorite flowers were roses, weren’t they? Without thinking, he walked into the store.

“Hi! May I help you?” a round, old woman asked him after she had heard the tinkling of the bells indicating a customer. She had to admit that she was taken aback at seeing such a handsome youth in her store.

Max nodded and smiled kindly, “I was wondering if I could buy that rose display you have in the window.”

The corners of the woman’s mouth lifted in delight, “But of course! Let me just go into the back and get a fresh one for you. You wait right here, young man.”

Smiling, Max consented, musing over how much the old woman reminded him of his deceased grandmother.

“So, who’s the lucky girl?”

A silly grin appeared on Max’s face at the mention of Liz. “It’s for my girlfriend, Liz.”

“Ah, does she like roses?”

“They’re her favorite.”

The old woman’s eyes twinkled knowingly, “Roses are beautiful are they not? However,” she handed the flowers over as she collected the payment from Max, “they can be very dangerous and can hurt her. Because she has a weakness for their beauty, she may find herself being pricked by several thorns.”

Max left the store, a foreboding feeling crashing over him. That woman couldn’t possibly have known about the “favor,” could she? Max’s heart clenched in fear; Liz couldn’t find out now, not when things were so good. He knew that she’d be furious and would most likely hate him for ever. Shaking his head, he wouldn’t let himself think about that, Max walked back to his car and got in, driving to Roswell High.

Ah, the memories.

Max had loved high school. Everything was so simple, then. He had been the star of the basketball team, had had a steady string of girlfriends…. Yes, life had been perfect. Shaking away the memories, Max made his way to the main office.

Immediately, one of the secretaries, Mrs. Bentley, jumped up and ran over to Max, enveloping him in cheek pats and grandmotherly kisses. “Oh, Max! I am so happy to see you again! What brings you back?”

Max smiled that heart-stopping smile, “Why, I came back to see you of course!”

Mrs. Bentley shook her head, pointing a finger at him, “You little sneaky liar. Don’t you think that by now I’ve learned of your little tricks?” She laughed and gasped as her eyes landed on the bouquet Max held in his arms. “It’s a girl, huh? Which one is the lucky one today, Max?”

Max placed a hand over his heart and swooned dramatically, “Mrs. Bentley! You’ve broken my heart! I am not a playboy!”

“You just think that, dear.”

The goofy grin on Max’s face and the way he kept sneaking glances at the clock told her that whoever this girl was, she was a keeper.

“Mrs. Bentley, I was wondering if you could please tell me the last period of a senior named Liz Parker. I want to surprise her.”

“Liz Parker?” Mrs. Bentley’s eyes widened in astonishment and disbelief. “Valedictorian Liz Parker? Oh, Max, what are you thinking? Going after a wonderful girl like that?”

“Please, Mrs. Bentley, school’s going to end soon and I’d really like to be there to give Liz the roses and-“

“-All right, all right, Max,” she shot him a warning look, “But if you break that poor child’s heart, I swear I will let your mother spank the daylights out of you.”

Max’s laughter boomed loudly in the office. After he had gotten the information from Mrs. Bentley, who kept reminding him that he had better not hurt “that poor girl,” Max walked to the science lab Liz was in and waited outside of the door, roses in hand.

The bell rang. Liz was the sixth person out of the door.

“Liz!”

Liz turned around, a smile lighting up her face as she saw Max standing there. “Max!” she called and threw herself into his arms.

Max chuckled, enjoying the feel of her lush body pressed against his hard one. “Here,” he pulled slightly back, “These are for you.”

Liz gasped. “They’re beautiful!” Taking the flowers, she leaned into Max and gave him a loving peck on the lips. “Thank you so much, Max,” her voice lowered, “No one’s ever gotten me flowers before.”

Max smiled and lifted Liz’s face for a kiss. His lips settled onto hers and he heard her sigh softly as she melted into him. God, it was so good. Was it always going to be this good? Only with Liz, only with Liz.

Liz lost herself in the kiss, unaware of the people staring at her and Max, unaware of the spectacle she was making. Liz felt as if she was flying away, heat nipping at her soul. It was only when Max pulled away that the whispers finally reached her ears. Mortified, Liz jerked away from Max, but was stopped short by his arms tightening around her waist. His gaze burned through her.

“It doesn’t matter what they think,” he said in a low voice, “It only matters what we think and feel.”

He was right, Liz knew that, especially when Max’s lips covered hers once again. Liz was gone again, off in her own world with Max.

CRASH

Liz jumped away from Max and tears gathered in her eyes as she saw the shattered glass of the beautiful vase and the blood-red petals scattered over the hallway floor. Immediately, she bent down to pick up the roses. As she gathered the last stem, she cried out in pain.

“What’s wrong?” Max asked, grabbing her hand and examining it.

“I got pricked by a thorn.”

“Does it hurt?” Max’s head was spinning.

Liz nodded, tears forming. “It hurts a lot.”

PART ELEVEN

Maria’s beautiful voice flowed through the hair, lifting Liz up in a cloud of harmony. Liz had never heard such lovely singing before; it was as if Maria had been sent from heaven to Earth to sing and make everyone’s lives better.

Max smiled into Liz’s hair as she leaned further back into him, their bodies swaying slightly the music. He loved coming to Maria’s concerts and hearing her sing; she was so gifted with her voice that Max knew she’d make it big soon. He was glad he had brought Liz; he wanted to share this special moment with her.

When the song ended, Liz turned in his arms, tears glittering in her eyes. “Oh, Max, that was so beautiful!”

He tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ears and nodded, “Maria’s something special, isn’t she?”

Liz nodded, noting how the pride shone in Max’s eyes.

“You know what?” Max asked, eagerness lighting up his eyes. “I think that you and Maria would really like one another! You guys have a lot in common and balance each other so well and-“

Liz laughed, “-Max, we’ve already met before. She didn’t seem too impressed by me.”

“That’s because of Tess though. Maria and Tess have been friends for a long time and Maria probably felt as if she had to not like you or else she would be betraying Tess.”

Hope lit Liz’s eyes, “You really think so?”

Max’s breath was taken away as he stared at the excitement in her eyes. Liz was so beautiful; how could he have not noticed it before?

“Max? Max!”

Snapped out of the spell Liz had him under, Max turned his head and groaned audibly when he saw Tess walking towards them. Liz seemed to feel the same way, if her suddenly stiffening was any indication.

Tess, her blond curls bouncing and her icy blue eyes gleaming, beamed at Max, giving him a quick peck on the cheek, ignoring the very quiet Liz in his arms. Tess’s grin slid off when she faced Liz.

“Hello, Liz.”

“Hi,” Liz squeaked out, curling her fingers into a fist and seething with jealousy and anger.

“So, Tess,” Max said, sensing the tension between the two females, “What brings you here? You hate going to Maria’s concerts.”

The corners of Tess’s sultry mouth curled up as her heart skipped a beat. Max had remembered! “Well, Maria said you were going to be here and, well,” she paused, desire darkening her eyes, “I wanted to be here with you, too.”

That was it; Liz saw red. It was one thing to pine after Max, but practically throwing herself at him was crossing the line. Why couldn’t Tess open her eyes and see that Max was with Liz now, not her? Why couldn’t Tess see that Max loved Liz now, not her, well if he really did, that is?

Max sighed, tightening his arms around Liz. He noted, shamefully relieved, that Tess saw that move and that her teeth clenched together in jealousy. “Look, Tess, I don’t want to go over this again. Liz and I are going to go now; tell Maria we said ‘hi.’”

Leaving Tess gaping with surprise, Max released Liz and wrapped an arm around her, maneuvering the two of them back out to the parking lot.

“But, Max, what about me meeting Maria?” Liz asked, pushing aside the jealousy and anger. She let Max help her into the seat and buckled her seatbelt.

Max ran around to the other side and got in. “Not tonight. Sorry, Liz, about that with Tess.” He turned to her, framing her beautiful face in his large hands. “I’ve told Tess a thousand times that it’s over between the two of us and a thousand more times that I’m with you now. But she just doesn’t seem to want to accept it.”

The silence grew between them in the car as Max drove them to his dorm.

“Max?” Liz asked hesitantly when the two of them were seated comfortably on his couch, “Why did you and Tess break up?”

Max sighed, knowing that this had to have been coming, was coming for a long time. “Well, you know that since the day we were born, everyone thought that Tess and I would be perfect for one another, that we would fall in love and marry and have a life together. When I was fifteen, I finally decided to accept it and to be honest, it wasn’t that bad of a thought. Ironically, it was at your family’s annual barbeque that I made the first move.”

Liz nodded, her cheeks turning pink as she considered what she was about to admit. “I know. I watched you the whole night, too shy to come within shouting distance of you. I saw you with Tess and was so upset, I ran upstairs crying. Izzy was with me and that night was the first time that I ever voiced my crush on you to someone. I even told Izzy that I wished I had blond hair and blue eyes.”

Shaking his head, Max kissed Liz lightly on the lips. “I, for one, am very glad that you don’t have blond hair and blue eyes. As a matter of fact, I love your brown hair and honey-speckled brown eyes.”

Liz smiled, returning Max’s soft kiss. “Keep going,” she urged, needing to know the rest of the story.

“What?” Max asked incredulously. “Oh, right. The story. Well, umm, yeah, so Tess and I dated and it was great at first. We had lots in common and she was, in my eyes, sweet and kind. But, I began to notice little things at first that I didn’t like. For instance, if you’re not her friend, she’ll give you these mean looks and won’t even bother trying to get to know you. She was also really possessive; she was always around me, watching me and she got extremely jealous when I would be within fifty feet of another female. I got annoyed and realized that she had changed, wasn’t the person I thought she was anymore and I broke it off. She was my first love, Liz, and it killed me to have to let her go because she was supposed to be perfect, to be my soul mate. Instead, I was blind and she broke my heart. That’s why I’m never going to fall in love again, Liz, it hurts too much and you end up making these huge mistakes and hurting those you care about.”

She was my first love. Hearing those words from Max sent daggers piercing into Liz’s hurting heart. It just reminded her of the old pain she felt when she had seen them together in the past. Those words brought back the fresh waves of anguish she had experienced when her heart and mind had both accepted that Max would never be hers.

“Max,” Liz began, choosing her words carefully, “Love isn’t always like that. When you find the right person, there won’t be anymore pain and disappointment. You won’t end up making mistakes or hurting those you care about. Just because you had one bad experience in love doesn’t mean that you can give up trying to love forever. Loving someone doesn’t mean they’ll love you back but you’ve got to love anyway or else you’ll never find the one you were meant to be with.” She paused, gazing into Max’s deep eyes, trying to send him a silent message that her words were for him. “I’ve loved before, Max, and I got hurt, no, crushed, but that hasn’t stopped me from being with you, has it? I’m still trying for that brass ring, Max, and you should be, too.”

Max’s eyes were hard to read in the darkness of the night. “You’ve been in love before? But, you’ve never dated or –“

“-Just because I haven’t dated someone doesn’t mean that I haven’t been in love before. That’s why I was hurt. I was in love with someone who could never be mine, someone who didn’t even see me. I was lost in love’s young dream and thought that maybe, one day, he would notice me and fall madly, deeply in love with me. Of course, that never happened and when I realized that it wouldn’t ever happen, my heart broke. But, thanks to you, Max, it’s slowly mending again and I’m starting to believe that everything will be ok.”

Max just stared into Liz’s beautiful eyes. He couldn’t believe that she had just shared so much of her heart with him, that she had trusted it with him. Her words were so deep, so full of passion and knowledge that it astonished him. He had thought her so naive and innocent, but she wasn’t, no, she wasn’t at all. And who was that guy she had lost her heart to? And why did it matter so much to him?

“Liz?” Max asked hesitantly, not sure he wanted to hear the answer.

Liz smiled sadly and laid a hand on Max’s cheek. “It was you, Max, always you.”

Him? Max wasn’t sure he could believed his ears. He had known that Liz had had a crush on him, but love? How could she have loved him and he not known? And then he remembered how she had said that he had caused her heartbreak and pain. “Oh, God, Liz, I’m so-“

Liz shook her head, “No, Max, don’t be sorry. It’s not your fault that you couldn’t see me because of Tess. She was all you could see just as much as you were all I could see.”

“I see you now, Liz.”

A weak smile appeared on her face as Liz took a deep breath. It was time. “I love you, Max.”

PART TWELVE

At that moment, Max knew that his life would never be the same. He had come into this as a favor for a friend, not knowing that this was actually a favor to him. He had won the loving heart of a wonderful woman…

The problem was that he didn’t want it.

He didn’t want to be responsible for another’s heart again. He didn’t want to know that the shine in Liz’s eyes came from her heart. He didn’t want to hate himself for not loving her back, the way she deserved to be loved.

“Max,” Liz whispered, cupping his handsome face in her soft hands. “I love you. I always have and I always will.” Tears gathered into her eyes as she said, “I don’t expect you to love me back because you can’t. I’m not anything like Tess, like a woman you could possibly love. I’m sorry if my feelings have changed things between us, but I just couldn’t keep it inside anymore.”

Max stared at her, unsure of what was to come next, what he should do.

“I’m glad I told you, Max, so glad. You came into my life not so long ago and I’ve never been happier! It’s like, when you smile, my whole world lights up and everything is perfect. When I think about you, I get this silly grin on my face and I don’t care; I want everyone to see how madly in love with you I am.”

“Liz,” Max started, knowing he was about to rip her heart to shreds, “I can’t love you back. It’s not because you’re not like Tess, I thank God every day that you’re not like her; it’s not because you’re not a woman I could love because Liz, you are a woman I could love. If my heart wasn’t already dead, I know I would have already lost it to you.”

Silent tears slid down Liz’s face, a sign of her torment and pain. She was going to lose him, lose the one thing she had always wanted and dreamed about. She had been a fool; why had she blurted out that forbidden four-letter word? Why hadn’t she just kept her mouth shut and kept things going the way they were?

Because that will never be enough for you.

Liz heard those words clearly, almost as if she had said them aloud. Without a warning, a huge, heart-shattering sob fell out of her as she buried her face into her hands and wept.

He hadn’t been expecting that. As if controlled by imaginary strings, Max took Liz into his arms and cradled her, rocking her back and forth. “Shhh, Honeyeyes, it’ll all be ok.”

Liz shook her head, “No, Max, it won’t. I’m going to lose you and I just can’t!” Sobs shook her body violently as she buried herself further into his embrace, fearing a life of loneliness without him.

Her anguished cries tore at Max. “You’re not going to lose me, Honeyeyes,” he lied, knowing there was no way they could work now, not with her loving him and him not being able to return that love. Also, not to mention that this was all a favor, a lie.

She knew he was lying. Liz may have been foolish in telling Max her feelings, but she knew a lie when she heard one. She just wanted to lose herself in Max, to forget the real world.

Max sensed the change in her, in the atmosphere.

Sexual tension filled the room, desire sizzling in the air around them. Liz’s body hummed, aching for the feel of Max’s. Max’s body responded as his lips met Liz’s, a meeting of hearts and souls.

Max tilted Liz’s chin up, deepening the passionate kiss. He knew he shouldn’t be doing this, that this would only make things worse. He couldn’t seem to help himself. Liz had cast a spell over him, blinding him with lust.

Running her hands under his shirt, Liz moaned, feeling the rough contours of his muscular body.

God! Her hands were burning, leaving a trail of scorching fire in their wake. As her soft fingers began to hesitantly undo the button of his jeans, Max was thrown back into reality.

“Liz,” he grabbed her hand, “What are we doing? We can’t do this; it’ll only make things worse.”

“No!” Liz defied, yanking her hand away from his grasp and returning it to his jeans. She began to fumble with the button, jerking his zipper down. A sense of fierce urgency washed over her, panic squeezing at her heart. When Max opened his mouth to protest, Liz jumped on top of him, straddling his hard body while thrusting her tongue into his open mouth.

“Mwfarf, Lwif,” Max mumbled. On their own accord, his hands dove under Liz’s top, caressing her silky skin. When he reached her bra, he cupped her breasts as his thumb rubbed her peaked nipples through the lace.

Liz broke the kiss, gasping for breath as she tilted her head back and moaned, pushing herself into Max’s hands. A fire was nipping at her, making her burn and then shiver with need. There was no space for shyness or self-consciousness; there was only space for Liz to be free, for Liz to want. And Liz wanted, she wanted Max. Making a sudden decision, Liz pulled slightly away from Max and keeping her eyes locked with his, slipped her shirt off, revealing the black lace bra she had thrown on on a whim. Then, she got up and walked away towards his bedroom, her hips swaying seductively.

Oh, God. What was Max supposed to do? How was he supposed to resist a sexy, willing woman? She wanted it, and Max wanted it, too. He wanted to be the one to teach her the secrets of lovemaking, to be the one whose hands and mouth would bring her to her first pleasure-filled orgasm. Knowing that he would most likely regret this in the morning, Max got up and quickly followed her. When he got into his bedroom and saw Liz in only her lace bra and panties, Max was sure he would explode then.

Taking a deep breath, Liz crooked her finger at him, her legs spreading slightly.

Even from fifteen feet away, Max could see the dark, wet spot spreading on the center of her panties. Damn, she was sexy, so sexy Max couldn’t believe that this was the same girl he had known since she was only seven pounds and in a diaper. Gulping like crazy, he walked over to her, his sexy-as-sin Goddess. Carelessly, he tossed his shirt off and tore off his jeans, leaving him in nothing but boxers.

He was a God. Liz’s eyes widened in marvel as she looked him up and down, her eyes resting finally on the large bulge below his stomach. He was huge! Liz could tell even through the layer of restrictive fabric. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea, after all. But Liz knew that if she left now, she would never know what it was like to be loved by Max, to spend the night in his arms, and to wake up beside him in the morning.

Without saying a word, Max crawled on top of Liz, one hand running through her shiny hair as his lips met hers. His other hand snaked down to her chest and expertly unclasped the bra. Still kissing her, he removed the bra and threw it behind him, letting both of his hands explore her flesh. Her breasts were the perfect size, fitting perfectly into his large hands. Before, when he had first discovered them, he hadn’t had enough time to examine them, worship them the way he wanted to. But now, he had all the time in the world. Slowly, his fingers kneaded, sending pleasure shooting through Liz’s body, gathering between her legs. He avoided her aching nipples, drawing circles around them as Liz arched in need.

“Oh, God, Max, please, please,” Liz pleaded as Max kissed a wet trail down her neck to her breasts.

“Please what, Liz?” Max discovered that he liked to hear Liz beg, really liked it.

“I, please,” Liz hesitated, a sudden shyness inching its way into her.

“Tell me, Liz, and I’ll make you feel good, so good.” As if to prove his point, Max nipped at swollen breast.

Gasping, Liz grabbed Max’s head and held it to her, no longer feeling shy. “Kiss me, Max. Suck my nipples.”

With pleasure, Max thought, his mouth latching onto a peaked nipple. He tugged and pulled at it while his other hand fondled the abandoned breast.

Liz could feel a tide of pleasure approaching, knew that she wanted it, but, at the same time, was scared of riding it alone. But, when Max bit down on her, she screamed, bucking uncontrollably as she experienced her first orgasm.

Max had never seen anything as erotic, as beautiful as the vision of Liz before him. Her eyes were closed in pleasure, her mouth open as she screamed her pleasure, her engorged nipples arching into Max even more. Tears leaked from her eyes as the ecstasy overwhelmed her. Max considered waiting until she recovered, but as her panties slid an inch further down her body, he knew he couldn’t. Hurriedly, he licked his way down to the juncture between her legs. He rubbed his face against her, the friction between the lace and her vaginal lips sending delicious sparks through her body. Max inhaled the spicy scent of her as he ripped the panties off.

Liz tried to close her legs, her body flushing from embarrassment. But when she felt Max’s breath on her vagina, her legs fell further apart and she grabbed onto Max’s hair, holding him closer.

Unable to wait a moment later, Max dug in, burying himself into Liz’s sweet warmth. His teeth pulled on her lips, his tongue pushed into her. Another orgasm shot through her, her cum flooding into Max’s mouth.

“No more, Max, God, no more!” Liz screamed, fearing that she would die from the immense pleasure. Her legs, which had been wrapped around Max’s head, fell as Max made his way up her body.

“You are so beautiful, Liz, so sexy.” Max’s eyes were dark with desire and his face glistened with Liz’s cum. “I want to make love to you, Liz. May I?”

This was it. “Yes,” Liz nodded, bringing Max’s lips to hers. She groaned when she tasted herself in Max’s mouth, remembering the slurping noises he had made as he drank her. She wanted to drink him, too. Suddenly, Liz pushed and rolled them over. With newfound courage, she straddled him, grinding against his hard erection. But that wasn’t enough, she wanted him bare skin. Before Max could react, Liz had his boxers off and his cock in her curious hands.

“Liz, stop, don’t…. Yes, right there. Oh, no, stop,” Max rasped out contradictingly.

Max was so beautiful, his penis long and hard. Liz had never seen one before, but she was sure that Max had to be larger than average. It was so wide and long, nine inches of hard rock. Leaning down, she timidly kissed the tip, licking up the small drop.

The sight of his cock in Liz’s sweet mouth nearly had Max cumming. He wanted to close his eyes, to make this last longer, but he found that he couldn’t. He was mesmerized; he couldn’t move as she watched Liz’s tongue run all over him.

Liz was now sure that she was doing it right, if the hardening of Max’s penis in her mouth was any indication. She could only get about half of it in when she wanted it all. Tears of frustration built up in her eyes as she bobbed her head, trying to take all of Max in.

Max was going to cum; he just knew it, especially if Liz kept deep-throating him. Her throat was so warm, so tight, he wanted to bury himself in another part of her that was warm and tight. Before he exploded, Max pulled Liz up and rolled her over so that he lay comfortably on top of her. He made a move to get up, but Liz wasn’t having any of it.

Her arms wound their way around his neck. “Where do you think you’re going, Mister?” Liz teased, her voice rough with passion.

Oh, God. She was teasing him, at a time like this! “Protection.”

Liz shook her head and nipped at the cord on Max’s neck. She smiled into his neck when she heard his groan. “I’m on the pill, Max. I don’t have a regular cycle.”

That was it; there was nothing stopping Max now. Roughly, he kissed Liz, tweaking her nipples. He captured her moans of pleasure into his mouth.

“Oh, my God!” Liz cried when the tip of Max’s cock penetrated her tight pussy.

“I’m so sorry, Liz, but this is going to hurt, Honeyeyes.”

Liz nodded, wanting this more than anything.

“A bit of pain… for the glory,” Max shouted, thrusting all of himself into Liz. He was lost. She was so tight, so wet that Max couldn’t stop himself, couldn’t give Liz time to adjust. He moved back and forth quickly, pounding into her relentlessly.

“Yes, Max, yes!” Liz screamed, the short flash of pain easily forgotten as Max rammed into her again and again. Liz had never felt so good; she felt as if she was soaring!

As the passion mounted, Max felt his balls fill and tighten. This was it and Liz was ready with him. A moment later, both Max and Liz exploded in white ecstasy, holding onto one another. Their screams echoed around them as they lost themselves to another.

Max collapsed onto his back, pulling Liz onto his chest.

As their breathing slowed and their bodies cooled, Liz leaned over Max. She thought he was asleep when she whispered into the darkness, “I love you, Max.”

He was wide awake.

PART THIRTEEN

“Harder, Max! Harder!” Liz demanded as she grinded herself against Max’s delving fingers.

Max flicked Liz’s hard clit over and over again while his fingers explored her sweet sex. He drove them in harder, hitting her G-spot.

It was too much for her. Liz climaxed, her legs trapping Max’s hands as he continued to play with her.

In one quick move, Max readied himself at Liz’s entrance. While she was still cumming, her vagina muscles clenched air, seeking Max. Burying his tongue into her mouth, Max thrust in, burying his cock into her warmth.

As he plunged into Liz, he rolled them over. He groaned, “Ride me, Honeyeyes.”

Excitement and anticipation lit up Liz’s eyes as she slowly pushed herself up. The feeling of Max’s penis slowly inching into her was marvelous, so stimulating that Liz came, her fluids leaking out in pools. After she had recovered, she felt Max’s erection hardening even more inside of her. Eagerly, she tried it out, bouncing up and down on Max’s cock, loving the power she had. She could decide when to go faster, when to slow down. Right now, she wanted it fast and hard. She rode him, her breasts jiggling teasingly in front of Max’s face.

Max couldn’t resist pulling those succulent orbs into his mouth, nipping roughly on her flesh. He couldn’t tell where he began and where Liz ended; it was as if they were one. Their moans and groans filled the room with the rhythmic slapping of their bodies.

When Max’s hand crept down in between their bodies to pinch her clit, Liz screamed, falling over the edge quickly and wonderfully. She came again when she felt Max’s hot seed flooding her insides, shooting up into her womb.

“Oh, God, Max,” she rasped out, collapsing on top of Max’s chest.

Max had to be dead. He couldn’t feel his body, could only feel exhaustion and pleasure. He inhaled and the scent of their lovemaking invaded his nostrils. God, it was hot. Just like his Liz, she was so damn hot. After their first time, she had rested comfortably for about thirty minutes. Before he knew what was happening, he was waking up to her deep-throating him again. He came right then and there and a very satisfied Liz had told him, “You taste so good, Max, I could drink you forever.” And she seemed to be telling the truth because he woke up every hour or so after each of their lovemaking sessions to find himself buried in her mouth. Life was good.

Liz sighed, snuggling against Max’s sweaty chest. She could feel her heart beating a thousand beats a minute and fancied that she heard Max’s, also. She stretched out and rolled off of Max, enjoying the relaxation taking over her body. She couldn’t believe that she wasn’t dead yet; Max and her and spent the whole night making love, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes gently, sometimes roughly. It had been wonderful and Liz discovered that when it came to Max, she was insatiable; she just wanted more and more of him every time. Turning her head, she caught a glimpse of the clock. It was only eight in the morning and Liz still-

Oh my God! It was eight! Frantic, Liz sat up. “Shit!”

That definitely surprised a very sleepy Max. Immediately, he sat up also and put a hand on her arm. “You’ve been hanging around me too often, Liz, you’re starting to curse.”

She shook his arm off and jumped off of the bed, oblivious to her naked state. Hurriedly, she began looking all over the room for her clothes. “Where’s my bra, Max?” she yelled from under the bed.

“I don’t know. It should be here. What’s wrong, Liz?” Max had gotten out of bed and had pulled his boxers on.

“I have school, Max! I’m already half an hour late!” she cried, pulling on her jeans. “Aha! My bra!” she exclaimed when she found the crumpled garment hanging from the lamp on Max’s desk. Now, how had it gotten there?

“Oh, shit!” Max quickly threw some clothes on and told Liz to use his toothbrush in the bathroom while he made them coffee.

She looked like a mess. Liz’s hair was uncombed and her clothes disheveled. After she brushed her teeth, she washed her face, letting the cool water soothe her nerves. She had never missed a day of school in her life and she hadn’t ever been late either.

“Max!”

Max nearly dropped his cup of coffee when he heard Liz scream. Panicked, he ran to the bathroom. “What is it, Honeyeyes?”

Liz was sitting on the bathroom floor, her face buried in her hands. Through soft sobs, she told him, “I can’t go. I look like a mess and I don’t have clothes and it hurts and-“

“-What hurts?” Max asked, scooping Liz up into his arms as he carried her out to the couch.

Liz shot him a disbelieving look. “You know.”

Oh. There. He sighed and began to undress her.

“What are you doing, Max? I have to get to school!”

“Liz, you’re already late so you might as well go take a shower. Not only will that make you feel cleaner, but the warm water will soothe your body. God, I’m sorry. I should have known that this would happen and slowed down.”

Liz giggled, her mood suddenly lighter. While undressing, she scoffed, “Like you really could have stopped me.” And with that, she haughtily walked into the bathroom. A second later, the water turned on.

While she was showering, Max quickly brushed his teeth and washed his teeth. On a whim, he shaved and then rummaged through his clothes for something Liz could wear. He didn’t have much. Most of his clothes were too big, but he managed to find a plain black T-shirt that he no longer fit and a pair of mesh basketball pants. He left them in the bathroom for Liz and went out to the kitchen to fix her a bowl of cereal.

“Max.”

Startled, he turned. Holy shit. Max had to bite his lip not to burst out laughing; Liz was looking defeated enough without his laughing at her.

“Max! Stop laughing!” Liz scolded, walked over to him, his pants dragging across the floor.

“I’m not.”

“Your eyes are twinkling.”

He burst out laughing. She just looked so cute, drowning in those huge clothes. He took her into his arms and smiled down at her, “Come on, Liz, let’s get you to school.”

“Max?” she searched his eyes, reading his soul.

“Yeah?”

“Your heart isn’t dead; it’s very much alive.”

He stared at her, astounded. “Liz-“

Tears filled her eyes. “You promised me I wouldn’t lose you. Will I?”

Would she? Max gazed into her eyes, her heart out in the open. Was she right, was his heart not dead at all, but just waiting? Was he willing to give her up, to let her go? Resting his forehead against hers, he promised her, “No, Honeyeyes. You won’t lose me.”

PART FOURTEEN

Everyone stared at her. They knew that those weren’t Liz’s clothes, but a guy’s.

By lunch, it was all over school that Liz had spent the night with a guy.

During the last period of the day, while Liz was busy measuring chlorine for her biology lab, Bree, the captain of the cheerleading squad, sauntered over.

“Excuse me.”

Liz looked up and froze. What did Bree want? She had never talked to Liz before. “Yes?”

Bree smiled evilly, “So, Liz, is it true that you and Max Evans are a couple?”

“What do you think?” Liz asked, exasperated that yet another person wanted to know.

“Well, everyone like says that he like gave you flowers yesterday. And like it’s like totally obvious that you are like wearing a guy’s like clothes. Are they like Max’s?”

Should she or shouldn’t she? She should. Liz nodded, “Yes, they’re Max’s and yes, I am going out with him.”

Bree’s eyes widened in disbelief. “So you like really did like spend the night with him?”

“That’s none of your business. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to finish this lab.”

“I don’t believe you, you know. No one does,” she sneered at Liz. “There’s no way that the Max Evans would want anything to do with you.”

“And why’s that?” Liz asked, her eyes shining with anger and disguised pain. “I’ve known Max since forever; he doesn’t judge me the way you all judge me. He knows who I am and I know who he is.”

“Look, Liz. Max is like totally out of your league. He’s like hot and so cool while you’re like so not,” she paused and then a mischievous smile lit her face. “Unless, of course, it was like a bet or favor or something. That’s totally it! Just some stupid college bet.” With that last remark, she snootily walked away, flinging her blond hair behind her.

Liz stared at her in disbelief. Was Bree really that dense? Didn’t she know Max at all? Max would never ever lie to her and go out with her just because of a bet or a favor. He wasn’t like that. Max was kind and honest and besides, he couldn’t fake the way he had made love to her. His touch was so full of truth and love that it had to have been real.

“Ms. Parker! There’s someone here to see you!” Mr. Boarme, Liz’s biology teacher called.

Liz turned around, a frown on her face. The frown immediately disappeared and turned into a grin when she saw who was standing there.

Max.

Smiling at her, Max made his way through the classroom, not noticing Bree and her cheerleader friends waving and winking at him.

“Hey, Liz,” he greeted, giving her a quick peck on the cheek. “I thought I’d stop by and we could get a quick snack after school.”

Liz flushed, aware that everyone in the room was staring at them. “Max, you’re not allowed to be here during school hours.”

He just flashed her a grin and turned towards her work with the test tubes. He picked one up, examining it carefully. “Don’t worry, Honeyeyes. I have the secretaries at the office wrapped around my finger; they said I could stay. And plus, Mr. Boarme doesn’t mind.” He looked up at the teacher and gave him a thumbs-up. Mr. Boarme just smiled and told the class to get back to work.

The corners of Liz’s mouth lifted up as she brushed her hair back.

“Here, let me do it,” Max offered, gently grabbing her hair and tying it into a loose ponytail.

“Hi, Max!” a cheery voice greeted followed with a giggle.

Max and Liz both turned to see Bree and her followers standing there.

“Ummm, hello.” Max paused, “Do I know you?”

Bree flushed. “Yeah, I’m Bree. We like met at Tess’s party last year!”

“Oh, right.” Max turned back to Liz then, dismissing Bree. “So, Liz, what are you in the mood for?”

“The mood for?” Liz gulped. Max didn’t mean what she thought he meant, did he? He wouldn’t come on to her in front of everyone, would he?

He took a spine-tingling step closer, his eyes gazing into Liz’s. “Yeah. What are you in the mood for?”

Liz could feel her legs weakening and her panties dampening.

He leaned closer. And then closer. “Pizza or a hamburger? Italian or Chinese?”

Huh? And then Liz realized what he meant. He wanted to know what she wanted to eat later. Oh, God. Mortified beyond belief, Liz turned away and focused on the chemicals in front of her, not daring to look at Max.

“Liz,” Max said softly, wanting her to know that he wasn’t laughing at her, just teasing her a little. But she wouldn’t meet his gaze. Tenderly, he turned her face so that she was facing him. “Hi.”

An embarrassed smile appeared on Liz’s face. “Go away, you jerk,” she said kiddingly.

“Sorry, but I’m here for ever.”

PART FIFTEEN

“Max! I’m going to fucking kill you!” Alex roared.

Max, sensing that Alex wasn’t kidding, quickly jumped over the loveseat in Alex’s living room and ran towards the door.

Alex wasn’t far behind and caught up to Max easily. Dragging Max back to the living room, Alex bellowed, “I’m going to buy a gun, shoot you in the fucking head with it a million fucking times and then I’m going to eat you for fucking dinner!”

“Alex! Put Max down this instant!” Isabel screeched from the doorway.

Alex just shook his head. “He’s going to fucking die!”

“Alex! Stop using such vulgar language! Your child can hear you!” she yelled. “And put Max down now.” When Alex didn’t pay attention and continued to threaten Max, Isabel marched over and grabbed her husband by the ear. “Let him go or I’ll divorce you!”

Max was dropped instantly. Rubbing his neck, Max glared at his friend.

“What is going on here, Alex?” Isabel asked, pushing Alex down into a chair and then settling herself next to him. Her hand gripped onto his to prevent him from doing any further damage to Max.

“Do you know what he did?” Alex demanded angrily, his face red with rage. He didn’t give Isabel any time to answer. “He slept with my baby sister!

Oh, dear. Isabel knew that this was going to be a problem. Why had she opened her big mouth and told him? She grabbed her husband’s face and forced him to look her in the eyes. “Alex, sweetheart, calm down. You know your cholesterol’s not that good; you’re not supposed to get worked up. Now, Max and Liz are two mature adults now, they can decide what they want to do, even if that means sleeping together.”

“I told him to date her, not sleep with her!”

“Darling, what did you expect? There’s an undeniable chemistry between the two. Of course they were going to become intimate. Liz really cares for Max and I’m sure that he cares for her, too.”

“I do, Alex.” Max ran his fingers through his hair. “Look, I’m sorry if you’re angry, but Liz wanted it and I wanted it, too. I don’t regret it and I doubt she does.”

“God, my baby sister!” Alex wailed, burying his face into his hands.

“There, there, sweetheart,” Isabel soothed, patting her husband’s back. “Why don’t you go upstairs and I’ll give you a nice massage?”

Defeated, Alex sulked out of the living room, but not after sending a warning glare at Max.

Max sighed with relief. Getting up, he said, “Thanks, Izzy. I seriously thought he was going to kill me there.”

Isabel smiled, “Oh, he was. I still can’t believe it though! Liz? Having sex? Oh, well, she definitely enjoyed it, if the excitement in her voice was any indication.”

As Max and Isabel walked towards the front door, Isabel reminded him, “Don’t forget, Max: prom. It’s coming up in a few weeks and you’ll need to ask her soon so that she has enough time to get ready and everything.”

Max nodded, smiling as an image of Liz flittered through his mind. “Yeah, I’ll ask her on Friday.”

“Why Friday? That’s so far away!”

“I won’t see her until then. Didn’t she tell you? She’s grounded.”

“Whatever for?” Isabel couldn’t believe it.

Max smiled, “For not coming home and showing up in my clothes. I think they figured out what happened.”

“Oh, Max!”

“Don’t worry, Izzy. They’re still letting us go out, not that they could have stopped me.”

“Max?” Isabel asked hesitantly.

Max stopped and turned around on the sidewalk. “Hmm?”

“When are you going to tell her the truth? About this being a favor?”

The smile slid off of Max’s face like water. “I don’t know. Soon. I don’t want to go on like this with the favor between us. I’m kind of worried though. What if she hates me afterwards? I don’t think I could lose her.”

“The longer you put it off, the more likely it is that you will lose her.”

He prayed it wasn’t too late.

PART SIXTEEN

“Oh, Max! I missed you so much! These past few days have been so horrible!” Liz exclaimed, throwing her arms around Max.

Max chuckled, holding her closer. These past few days had been an eternity for him, too. “So, what do you want to do now? A great movie just came out; we could go watch that.”

Liz shook her head, her eyes darkening with desire. “I was thinking,” she fingered the collar of his shirt, “that we could maybe spend tonight at a more intimate location.” She leaned closer and whispered in Max’s ear, “Preferably, your bed.”

Max hardened immediately. “What have I done?” he teased, a quiver flowing through his body as Liz boldly nipped the sensitive spot behind his ear. “I’ve turned an innocent, pure girl into a sex-craved maniac.”

Laughter bubbled out of Liz as she blushed in embarrassment. Pulling away, she tugged Max towards her living room. “Come on, Max. Mom and Dad want to talk to you.”

Fuck. Max knew this was going to happen, but that didn’t mean that he was prepared for it. What the hell was he supposed to say to them, “Hi! I know you know that I slept with your daughter. Can I take her out tonight to sleep with her again?” Max had a feeling that that wouldn’t go too well.

“Mom, Dad! Max is here,” Liz announced, leaning against Max’s hard body.

“Hey Mr. Parker, Mrs. Parker,” Max greeted, walking over and giving Liz’s mom a soft peek on the cheek. “How are you guys?”

“Oh, we’re fine, Max. I was talking to your mother yesterday and she told me to tell you that if you don’t get your butt home for dinner sometime soon, she’ll be forced to come get you on campus.”

Max smiled. “Then I’d better go, huh? Wouldn’t want that happening.”

“So, where are you two going tonight?” Mr. Parker asked, looking at Max.

“We’re going to go see a movie, Dad. You know, that new one with Matt Damon?” Liz replied, grabbing Max’s hand. “And we’d better get going or we’ll be late.”

“Oh, alright, dear,” Mrs. Parker said, smiling serenely at her daughter. “Just be home by midnight.”

“Actually, Mom, I was going to spend the night at Alex’s. Izzy said that he’s smothering her and that she needs some salvation.”

Liz’s parents smiled fondly and agreed, yelling “good-bye” to the two as Liz and Max made their way to his car.

After throwing Liz’s duffel bag into his trunk, he waved one last time to the Parker’s and drove away, Liz in tow.

“So, what time is Izzy expecting you?” Max asked as Liz fiddled with the radio.

“She’s not,” Liz answered nonchalantly. “I thought I’d spend the night with you if that’s ok.”

She was trying to kill him, Max was sure of it now. He snuck a quick peek at her and saw that her eyes were dancing with excitement. Max put a large hand on her thigh, squeezing affectionately. “Of course that’s ok. Actually, nothing would be more ok.”

The rest of the ride passed in comfortable chatter as they caught up on each other’s lives.

When they had reached Max’s dorm, Liz went to put her bag in Max’s room. Max waited in the living room. After ten minutes, Max realized that he didn’t hear a noise coming from his bedroom. Worried that Liz may be hurt or something, he turned off the television and walked to his room.

“Liz? Where are- Holy shit!”

Liz froze, her heart pounding, her fingers in between her spread legs. Her face flamed red as she quickly removed her fingers and sat up.

“No!” Max yelled, quickly walking to her side. He sat down next to her and grabbed her hand. Surprising her greatly, Max took her hand and brought it to his face, inhaling her musky scent. His eyes on hers, he slowly laved each finger, relishing her spicy taste.

Liz wasn’t embarrassed any more, her body heating up again as she watched Max’s tongue caress her. When Max gently put her hand right on top of her mound, Liz gasped.

“I want to watch you,” Max whispered, releasing her hand and trailing his own up her body. When he reached her firm breasts, he bent down and kissed one. “Let me watch you.”

Gathering her courage, Liz took a deep breath and moved her slick fingers against her clit. “Max, take your shirt off. I need to see you.”

His eyes never leaving hers, Max shrugged out of his shirt. Moving down, Max crouched between Liz’s soft legs and spread them, his eyes scorching hot as they watched Liz’s fingers enter her wet haven, thrusting in and out.

Liz was so hot, she was melting. The sight of Max’s hard muscles enhanced her desire. Max was staring intensely at her and Liz couldn’t believe what she doing. She was touching herself! But it felt so good. Yearning for release, Liz thrust harder and quicker, four slim fingers pistoning in and out of her small body. When Max leaned down and nipped at her hard clit, Liz exploded, her fluids shooting into Max’s mouth.

“God, Liz, I can’t believe you just did that!” Max exclaimed after she had came down from her high.

Liz blushed, hiding her face in Max’s shoulder.

“You’re so sexy, so beautiful,” Max muttered, kissing Liz’s forehead.

When Liz turned her body towards his, she felt his stiff erection throbbing against her thigh. “Mmm,” she purred, rubbing against him, “Someone wants to be let out.”

Max cupped her face in his hands and traced her juicy lips with his tongue. With each small lick, Max felt himself hardening even further. His hand slowly skimmed down Liz’s body, resting on her breast.

“Max, make love to me.”

She didn’t have to ask him twice. Kissing her deeply, Max tenderly kneaded her soft flesh, causing sweet moans to escape.

KNOCK, KNOCK.

Liz shot up and pushed Max away. “Max, someone’s knocking at your door! Go answer it.”

Groaning, Max buried his face into his pillow and murmured, “I’m going to kill myself.”

Liz just laughed and nipped at his bare back. “Come on, put on your shirt while I toss on my pajamas.”

Max threw his rugby shirt back on, not even bothering to button the top buttons. He stalked over to the door and threw it open. “Tess!”

“Hi, Max!” she beamed her blue eyes twinkling with desire as she glimpsed some of Max’s bare chest. Her body heated as she remembered how wonderful the sex had been with him.

“Oh, hi, Tess. Ummm, can I help you with something.”

“Actually, yes.” Her eyes filled with glistening tears. “I umm, Max, I really need to talk to you.”

“What’s wrong?” he asked, genuine concern in his voice.

She threw herself into his arms, sobbing into his chest. “Oh, Max! My mom, she’s, she’s in the hospital. She had a stroke!”

Oh, God. Max felt his heart clench in pain. “Oh, Tess, I’m so sorry.” Gently, he led inside and sat her down on the couch.

Tess buried her face into Max’s chest, holding him tightly, seeking the comfort only he could give her. She loved him so much and needed him even more right now. “Max, I don’t know what to do! I’m so scared! What if she’s not ok? Oh, Max!”

Max tenderly patted her back. “She’ll be fine, Tess. Your mother’s one of the strongest women I know.”

“Max? Who was at the…,” Liz paused, her eyes widening as she took in the scene, “…door.”

Max immediately released Tess, but Tess wouldn’t let him go. “Liz, Tess’s mother just had a stroke. Tess needed someone to talk to.”

“Right.” That one word was full of pain and sarcasm. Liz mentally hit herself. How could she have been so stupid? Max and Tess still loved one another! There wasn’t a chance for her and Max!

Max could clearly read her thoughts and got up, wrapping an arm around Liz. “Liz, Honeyeyes, please.” He softly kissed her on the lips, trying to reassure her.

Tess watched the whole thing, tears flowing down her face. Her heart shattered into a million more pieces as she saw the obvious love in Max’s eyes as he held Liz. Max had never looked at her like that, never held her with that evident love. Maybe it was time to let him go. “Max, I’ve got to go now,” she whispered, walking out.

Max nodded and gave her a friendly hug. When she had gone, he walked back into the dorm and sat down wearily on the loveseat, massaging his temples.

Liz sat down in his lap and held his face to her breast. “She’ll be ok, right, Max?”

“I hope so.”

And they sat like that for a long time, just holding one another.

“Liz? May I escort you to your senior prom?”

The atmosphere in the room suddenly lifted.

Startled, Liz pulled back. “Really?” her eyes shown with excitement.

“Yes. I want to be there with you on that special night.”

Liz glowed and threw her arms around Max’s neck. “Oh, Max! That’d be wonderful! I’d love to have you there!”

Chuckling, Max willingly sat there, enjoying Liz’s soft pecks all over his face. He couldn’t wait the two weeks until the prom; he could already imagine how beautiful Liz would look, her eyes glittering like diamonds as they danced. Max couldn’t remember being this excited when he had gone to his prom two years ago.

“I want to go tell Izzy!”

Max nuzzled her neck, preventing her from escaping to the phone, “Now? How about in, let’s say, an hour or so? After we’re done?”

“Done with what, Max?” Liz asked not-so-innocently.

“Oh, I think you know,” Max drawled out, licking his sweet Liz’s ear.

“No, I’m sorry.” And before he could stop her, Liz had jumped off of Max’s lap and was already dialing Isabel’s number. “Izzy? Hi! Guess what?.... No!.... Max is going to be my date for prom!.... Yes! He just asked me!.... Will you? Oh, thanks so much, Izzy! I love you, too. Say ‘hi’ to Alex for me. Thanks! Bye!”

When she hung up, Max attacked, scooping her up into his arms and carrying her into the bedroom. Nipping at her neck, Max placed her on the bed, his hands immediately taking her shirt off. When Max had her naked, he proceeded to join her in that state.

“Max?” Liz asked, her voice heavy with passion as she stilled Max’s hands. “I’m so happy. Thank you for making me so happy.”

He smiled, “I’m going to make you even happier.”

Liz discovered, while screaming through her orgasm, that Max wasn’t lying.

PART SEVENTEEN

“I love him, Mom.”

Nancy Parker smiled at her daughter, continuing to comb her fingers through Liz’s hair. “I know, sweetie.”

Liz’s eyes twinkled excitedly, “He’s just so sweet, Mom. And kind and handsome and caring and-“

“-I get it, I get it,” Nancy laughed. “Max is perfect.”

Liz sighed, her eyes closing dreamily. “Oh, he is, Mom. He makes me feel so special, like I’m the only person in the world.”

“Have you told him how you feel?”

Liz’s eyes shot open, truth evident in those dark pools. “Yes.”

Nancy’s little girl had grown up, had fallen in love with a man. “And?”

Turning her head, Liz wouldn’t meet her mother’s knowing gaze. “And I said that I loved him.”

That much was obvious. “Does he feel the same way?”

“Well, you see, Mom, Max has been through a lot, you know, with Tess and all. He isn’t prepared to fall in love again and needs time.”

Nancy was afraid this would happen. “Liz, you know as well as I do that Max and Tess never really truly loved one another. They were so stuck on what everyone else thought that they didn’t take the time to see if being together was what they really wanted. They just went along with it. Max’s mother and I think that well, Max is just using his failed relationship with Tess as an excuse to avoid love because he’s scared of it.”

Liz sat up, a frown on her face. “Max isn’t afraid of falling in love, Mom; you’re wrong. He did love Tess and she had hurt him so of course he’s not going to want to fall in love again. When he does, though, it’ll be with me; I just know it!”

Her heart breaking, Nancy watched as tears filled her daughter’s eyes. “Liz, your father and I don’t want you to get hurt. Max is two years older than you. He’s seen more and experienced worlds more than you have. You think you love him, but sweetie, do you really?”

“Of course! I know what I feel, Mom. I’ve never felt this way before with anybody else and-“ Liz choked on a sob and threw herself on her bed, hiding her face in her pillow.

“Oh, Liz, baby, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I just wanted to be sure that you were sure that you loved him. You’re spending all of your time with him and I just don’t want you to be crushed when he ends things.”

“He won’t! We’ll be together forever!” Liz cried, her words muffled slightly by the pillow.

Nancy sighed, seeing that she wasn’t getting anywhere. “Liz, forever isn’t always as long as you think it to be.”

Lifting her head, Liz gazed at her mother with anguished eyes. “I love him, Mom. Isn’t that enough?”

Nancy didn’t have the heart to tell her that it was never enough.

PART EIGHTEEN

“Max! Oh, God, I’m so sorry. I just heard and I got here as quickly as I could,” Liz cried, throwing her arms around Max as he turned into her embrace, burying his face into her neck. Her heart ached for him.

Max squeezed his eyes closed, fighting the tears pricking at his eyes. He held onto Liz, the anchor in his life. He needed her, desperately, like he had never needed someone before. He needed the comfort she willingly gave, the warmth in her smile, the never-ending love and devotion she had for him. As long as she was with him, everything would be ok and he would survive.

Liz knew Max was holding back the tears, not wanting to show that sign of weakness. “She’ll be ok, Max,” Liz whispered as she held him, “Maria’s strong, remember? You told me. She’ll make it, I promise.”

Max didn’t respond, but Liz knew he had heard her.

“I love you, Max. I’m here for you and I won’t leave,” she promised ardently, holding him closer, trying to absorb his pain. “Give me your pain, Max. Let me make you feel better.”

Max shook his head, pulling away slightly to look in her eyes. Even through watery eyes, he could see that Liz meant it; she was willing to carry his pain for him. God, he loved- Max stopped, not wanting to think about it.

“She was walking home from rehearsal. She wouldn’t let someone give her a ride; she insisted that it was a nice evening and that she would walk. It got dark and some bastard, some drunk bastard crashed into her and didn’t even stop! If that drugstore owner hadn’t been outside taking out the trash, Maria would have been there, lying in the street dying!” Max’s voice cracked as he struggled for control. “When we find that bastard, I’m going to kill him.”

“Oh, Max,” Liz whispered hoarsely, holding him close to her. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know her very well, but she has a beautiful voice and I’m sure she’s a beautiful person, too.”

Tess was already losing her mother, her heart couldn’t handle it if she lost her best friend, too. She ached to be the one holding Max, to be held by Max. Instead, she stood there, clenching her fists to control the growing pain in her chest, watching Max and Liz. Michael, Kyle, Alexis, and Isabella all watched the couple sullenly. They could see the obvious love in Liz’s eyes, the strength in that young girl. They could see that with that love, Max would be able to make it through this ordeal. If only they were as lucky to have someone there for them like Max had Liz.

The door to the emergency room opened and a doctor, covered in blood, Maria’s blood, approached the group of teens. His face held defeat and regret.

“I’m sorry,” he said and he meant it. A young life taken so gruesomely, a life which shouldn’t have ended yet.

The group of friends held on to one another, tears flowing down their faces while Liz wept with Max. Liz felt as if everything was crashing around her, the pain she felt was real, burning a hole through her.

“Is one of you Max?” the doctor asked quietly.

Max lifted his head, his eyes wet, but not crying. “I am,” he managed to get out.

The doctor nodded, his eyes filled with sympathy. “Maria asked for you in there. She wanted me to tell you that she’d be ok, that you didn’t have to worry about her.”

Max sighed as a broken sob rose out of him. A single tear rolled down his face and Liz kissed it away.

The doctor added, “She also said that ‘Liz is the love of your life and everyone else is always going to be second best.’”

Max stared into Liz’s loving eyes and knew that Maria was right.

PART NINETEEN *song by Martina McBride called CA*

She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides the bruises with linen and lace

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear, but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it'll be too late

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she is loved
Concrete angel

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

Liz clenched the microphone, tears in her eyes, as she sang the final chords of Maria’s latest song.

Maria’s friends and family clapped as they sobbed. Liz’s voice wasn’t as strong or rough as Maria’s, but it was still breathtakingly beautiful.

It was a beautiful day, the sun shining and the birds chirping. It was a day made for fun and laughter, not for tears and a funeral; Maria would have loved it.

“’Concrete Angel’ was the last song that Maria wrote. She had poured her whole heart and soul into it and I’m honored to be the one singing it.” With wobbly legs, Liz made her way to her chair next to Max and sat down, clasping Max’s hand.

“That was beautiful, Liz. Maria would have been proud,” Max whispered with a weak smile.

When Max and Maria’s family had asked Liz to sing this song, she had refused. But after reading the heart-touching lyrics, Liz knew that she couldn’t not sing it. Maria had a gift and Liz wanted the world to know it. Her only regret was that she had never known Maria well, had never gotten the chance to be her friend.

Six hours later, Liz cradled Max in her arms, humming Maria’s song.

Max held her closer, inhaling her warm scent. If she hadn’t been here for him, Max knew that he wouldn’t have made it. She had been with him, waiting with open arms these past few days. Whenever he needed her, she was there, willing to just hold him. His heart called out to hers and hers called right back.

“I love you, Max,” she whispered, her ever-hopeful heart listening for a reply. Moments passed in tense silence.

And then, finally, Max said softly, “I love you, too, Liz.”

PART TWENTY

It was like a fairy tale come true.

The night was beautiful with stars glittering above them. The moon shone brightly, illuminating Liz’s beautiful face and Max’s handsome smile.

Liz twirled in Max’s arms, her strapless, pink and yellow gown flaring to life. The top of the dress was a deep pink and then faded around her stomach to a brilliant yellow and then danced back to pink. In the moonlight, the fine silver thread, which interlaced to form an exotic pattern on the dress, glittered stunningly. Her sheer shawl was draped lovingly over her bare shoulders, highlighting the paleness of her skin. She felt like a princess in the arms of her Prince Charming.

Max felt his heart fill with love, love for this delicate woman in his arms. He still couldn’t believe that she was his, forever and for always. Dread weighed down heavily on his heart as he remembered the favor, the reason why they were here together. Max knew that Liz deserved to know the truth, but he couldn’t seem to find the right moment to tell her. Every time he had an opportunity, he would hesitate and then it’d be too late. He didn’t want to lose her and he knew that by telling her about the favor, she would slip through his fingers like water. It wouldn’t matter that he was sorry, that he really did love her and that it had nothing to do with the damn favor.

“Liz?”

“Hmm?” she replied dreamily, her head resting against Max’s chest as they danced on the balcony of the ballroom where her prom was being held.

He nipped her ear affectionately. “I love you.”

She smiled the smile of a woman who knows whose hands her heart is in. “I love you, too.”

“I’m sorry I was an idiot and didn’t realize it sooner.”

Liz pulled away slightly to gaze into his eyes. “That’s ok. What’s important is that you did realize it. It doesn’t matter that it took you a while.”

Max shook his head. “I made us suffer for so long; how can you be so forgiving? I feel like strangling myself when I think of all the time I wasted.” Taking a deep breath, Max kissed Liz’s forehead and held her head close to his chest. “I thought that I had loved Tess, believed that she and I were meant to be. God, Liz, I was so wrong. All I have to do is look at you and I know that I never loved Tess. With her, it was a fluttery feeling in my stomach, a sharp stab of desire. With you, it’s fireworks and explosions and overwhelming longing and desire. With you, I’d be content to just hold you in my arms for the night. You make me crazy, Liz, and I love you, more than I ever thought it was possible to love someone.”

Tears flowed down Liz’s face and even with mascara stains underneath her eyes, Max’s heart was on the verge of bursting with love.

“Oh, Max! I love you, too!” Liz cried, holding him tighter. “I always have, since the moment I first laid eyes on you. You’re everything I’ve ever dreamed of and so much more.”

Cupping her face in his large hands, Max kissed her, a kiss that Liz had always dreamed of. Max poured his heart into that kiss, needing to show her that she really did mean everything to him. He was so afraid that she would leave him once she found out the truth.

“Look, Max!” Liz exclaimed excitedly, her eyes shining as she pointed to something behind him.

Turning his head, Max just barely saw the glittering streak of a shooting star in the sky. Placing a soft kiss on Liz’s forehead, he whispered, “Make a wish.”

Happier than she had ever been before, Liz whispered back, “I wish that we’ll always be together, forever and for always.”

Max wished, too.

PART TWENTY-ONE

“Have you told her the truth yet, Max?” Alex asked in a whisper, his eyes continuously darting towards the door to make sure that Liz wasn’t there.

After the prom, Max and Liz had gone to Alex’s house so that they could change into their Post Prom outfits. Max should have known that Liz would then spend the next hour recounting to Isabel every single detail that had happened hours before.

“No, but I will after the Post Prom,” Max promised, his chest tightening at the thought.

Alex just shook his head, knowing that it wasn’t going to be easier for Max. He also knew that it wouldn’t be easy for him or Isabel either; his baby sister probably wouldn’t talk to him for the next few years. “Look, Max, you know that Isabel and I are behind you 100%; we’ll take the blame, too. But, please, break it to her gently. I mean, she thinks that she really does love you and-“

“-She does love me, Alex. And I love her.”

Alex’s eyes twinkled. “I know. Hell, who doesn’t know? But I’m just saying, when she finds out that you asking her out in the beginning was because of a favor that you owed me, she’ll be furious. Especially when she finds out that Izzy and I have been planning this for years.”

“You’ve been what?!” Max demanded, anger flaring to life in his eyes.

“Oh, shut your damn mouth, Evans. Yes, Izzy and I have been master-minding for years, playing matchmaker. We knew you and Liz belonged together like Izzy and I belong together. We also knew, that without our help, you two would never get together. So, Izzy convinced Liz that she needed a make-over and I told you that you owed me a favor. The rest is history.”

“You’ve been playing us this whole time?” Max’s fists were clenched at his waist and Alex inched a little further away.

“Not really. We just gave you and Liz the push you needed. The rest was up to you. And may I congratulate you, you did a wonderful job with Liz. Izzy and I were expecting that it would take a couple more pushes, but you surprised us all. It almost really seemed that, at the beginning, you were really interested in Liz. It was great, Max, great.” He paused and gave Max a brotherly slap on the back. “Everything’s worked out, see? You and Liz are together and in love; nothing can go wrong.”

“Oh, it can go really wrong,” a voice as cold as ice announced from the doorway.

Both men whirled around toward the door, their eyes widening as they saw who was standing there. Liz.

Her eyes were glazed with tears as her lips drew up in a fake smile. There was no mistaking the hurt in her voice. “You see,” she threw a sharp glance at Alex, “your stupid sister or,” she threw daggers at Max, “that dim-witted girl you played, has discovered the truth.”

“Liz, it’s not like that,” Alex and Max both pleaded, taking a few steps closer.

Holding up her hands, Liz didn’t even notice the flood of tears flowing down her face. “I hate you, all of you,” she declared in a deceivingly-calm voice.

“No, Honeyeyes, I love-“ Max began.

“-Don’t call me that!” Liz screamed, turning and running for the front door.

“Liz!” Max called, chasing after her. But she was nowhere in sight.

“What’s happened?” Isabel asked, slowly making her way down the stairs. “I sent Liz down to look for the camera and she hasn’t come back up yet.”

Max’s eyes were filled with self-disgust. He said hoarsely, “She found out. She’s gone.” The bleakness in his voice almost sent Isabel tumbling down the steps.

“Oh, no,” Isabel cried, shaking her head. “Alex?” she asked as her husband made his way up the stairs and gathered her in his arms. When he nodded, she burst into tears. “Oh, no, it just can’t be, Alex. She wasn’t supposed to, to find out this way!”

“I was telling Max about it and she overheard,” Alex explained. When his gaze landed on Max, Alex said, “Max, go get her. Tell her the truth; it’ll all be ok.”

Max didn’t believe him. Not one bit.

PART TWENTY-TWO

She had been so stupid, so foolish! How could she have believed Max? She should have known that Max could never like the boring, ugly girl she was. Her dumb dreams of happily-ever-after and of Prince Charming laid shattered in her heart as Liz ran blindly down the street.

Liz had never felt such pain before; it was etching its way into her very being, permanently damaging her. Betrayal hung thickly in the air around her. How could they? How could Alex and Isabel have done something like that? How could she have been so blind?

And then it happened.

Swerving dangerously, a black car ran straight into Liz. As her body flew in the air, the car crashed into the large oak tree several feet ahead.

In the darkness of the night, Liz’s body laid crumpled on the hard gravel. Blood slowly seeped out of her barely-living body as she moved into the darkness.

No!” Max cried, running to her. Frantically, he kneeled down. “Liz, Honeyeyes, wake up. It’s me, Liz, me! I love you, God, I love you so much. Don’t leave me now, please, not when I’ve finally found you. I’m so sorry about the favor; it’s nothing, baby, nothing. You mean so much more.”

When she didn’t respond, Max reached into his pocket and grabbed his cellular phone. Blindly, he dialed in 911. Everything after that was a blur. He didn’t remember answering some questions to an operator, waiting for the ambulance to arrive while he cradled the unconscious Liz in his arms, or pacing the hospital’s ER. All he remembered was the pain and the guilt, the knowledge that if he lost Liz, he would simply die.

In the waiting room, Isabel sobbed onto Alex’s shoulder. Liz’s parents and Max’s clung onto one another, their old age finally showing. Max sat alone. The only person he wanted comfort from was bleeding to death behind those closed doors because of him. Max hated himself; it was his fault that Liz was fighting to live right now, his fault that she was struggling between life and death.

As he stared at the doors guarding Liz, Max was kicked in the stomach with the startling similarity between this and that fateful night weeks ago when he had lost Maria. He had already lost someone he cared about, he couldn’t lose another. When Maria had passed on, Max had had Liz there to hold him, to ease his pain. Now there was no one.

The door swung open and seven pairs of eyes anchored the doctor to his spot. Smiling gently, the doctor gave the good news, “She’s fine, just a few bruises and scratches, but she can only have a few visitors at a time. She’s being moved to level 7, room 713.”

“Oh, thank you!” Mrs. Parker cried, tugging her husband towards the elevator.

As they all made their way up to Liz’s room, tears of happiness and smiles replaced the dreadful fear and pain.

Liz’s parents and Max’s went first. They stayed for 15 minutes and 23 seconds, according to Max’s watch.

Alex and Isabel went next. They stayed for 8 minutes and 57 seconds.

Then Max went in.

The moment he laid eyes on her beautiful face covered in scratches and bruises, Max’s heart stopped. Rushing to her, Max grabbed her hands and kissed her, her forehead, her eyelids, her lips.

“Get off of me!” Liz demanded, her voice cold and devoid of emotion. Her eyes were two angry slits, “I hate you.”

Max’s world crumbled around him, the painful truth evident in her eyes. “Liz,” he pleaded, tightening his hold on her hands, “I love you, Liz.”

She just shook her head, angry tears seeping from her eyes. “You’re a liar, Max, and I hate you. You used me; I was just a stupid favor!”

How could she think that? Didn’t she see that Max loved her more than life itself? “No, Liz, you’re wrong. It started out as a favor… for that first second. But, God, Liz, I fell for you right then and there on Alex’s porch. I was supposed to just ask you out for one date and then to prom, but I wasn’t supposed to fall head over heels in love with you, Liz. But I did. Your smile and your laughter and your tears, they were so real, Honeyeyes. I love you because of that, Liz, because you’re real and you make me feel alive. My feelings have nothing to do with that stupid favor. I love you, Liz, and I know you love me.”

“You’re wrong. I hate you,” Liz stated as if by saying it a few more times, it would become true.

Max’s eyes darkened with pain and defeat. Guilt engulfed him as he saw Liz flinch from pain when she tried to move away from him. “You should hate me. It’s my fault you were run over today, my fault you’re lying here this moment. God, I almost killed you, Liz. I hate me, too.” And with that, Max turned and stalked purposefully towards the door.

“Max, wait!”

He stopped, not believing that he had actually heard Liz’s voice calling him back.

“Please, Max.”

Turning, Max made his way back to Liz’s bedside. “Yeah?” he asked, his voice gruff with despair.

The coldness had disappeared from her eyes as she reached out and grabbed Max’s hand. “Oh, Max, this isn’t your fault; it’s mine. I was acting foolishly; I shouldn’t have run out like that by myself at night. I didn’t even bother to look where I was going.”

“You ran out of there because of me, because of the damn favor, the damn lies.”

Liz didn’t know what to say to that. She wanted to forgive Max, to believe in his love once again. On the other hand, she was still hurt from his lies, still wary of trusting him.

Tentatively, Max reached out with his free hand and brushed a loose lock of hair away from Liz’s beautiful face. “I love you, Liz, and I’m so sorry for hurting you. I know it might take forever for you to forgive me, if you ever do, but if you let me, I’m willing to wait for ever.”

Liz stared into his deep eyes, seeing the evident love shining for her. She shook her head sadly, “I’m not willing to wait, Max.”

“Oh.” His face was crestfallen, pain etching itself into his features. “Well, yeah, I understand. I mean, you’re still young and you’d want to, umm, explore new, umm things with other, other men. Yeah, I get it.” Once more, Max got up.

But Liz wouldn’t let go of his hand. “No, Max, that’s not what I meant. I don’t want to explore ‘new things with other men.’ I only want you, Max…. And I’m not willing to wait for ever to be with you.”

He had a hearing problem; that had to be it. Either that or the hit Liz took to the head was causing major damage. “Liz, I-“

“-Don’t say another word, Max; I haven’t forgiven you entirely yet. I hate that it took a favor to get you to notice me; I hate that you didn’t tell me the truth before. But I love that you love me; I love the way your smile makes my heart go all fluttery. I love you, Max. And I’ll forgive you when you tell me how much you love me and-“

Max chuckled, the tension in the room suddenly lifting. It would always be like this with Liz; she would always be able to make everything better just by being by his side. “I love you more than anything in this world. I nearly died when I saw you lying there on the ground; I was so scared.”

Liz’s face grew serious as she cupped Max’s face in her hands and kissed him softly on the lips. “Thank you for saving me. You’re my hero.”

“No,” Max smiled, “thank you for saving me.”

Liz rested her head against Max’s chest, listening to his steady heartbeat. “Oh, yes, your heart is very much alive.”

And so it was.

PART TWENTY-THREE

“Can you believe it, Maria? It was him, the guy who had crashed into me was the same guy who had, who had with you. He’s in jail, now, Maria. It’s all over so you can rest now. Oh, and,” she leaned closer to Maria’s tombstone, giggling, “Max and I are fine now…. Thanks to a couple of sweaty tumbles in bed.”

“Ready, Honeyeyes?” Max appeared next to her, wrapping an arm around her waist.

She nodded, “Yeah. I think it’ll all be ok now, Max. Maria can rest now knowing that we’ve got the drunk driver.”

Max gave her a small peck on the cheek. Leaning down, he placed a beautiful bouquet of flowers against Maria’s tombstone. Straightening, Max tugged on Liz’s hand and together, they walked out of the graveyard. After Max started the car, his cellular phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Max?” Alex’s tense voice filled Max’s ear.

“Hey, Alex? What’s up?” Max started backing out of his parking spot.

“Izzy’s in labor!”

SCREECH! Max’s foot slammed on the brake and he and Liz propelled forward. “What?!”

“She’s in labor; she’s early. God, we need you and Liz here, now, at Roswell Hospital. Second floor, we’re in the hallway to the left.”

“Second floor. Left. Got it. We’ll be right there!”

After he had hung up and began racing towards the hospital, Liz asked, “Max, what is it? Where are we going?”

He didn’t even spare her a glance, he was so intent on getting to the hospital quickly. He knew that Liz wanted to be there for the birth of her first nephew or niece. “Izzy’s in labor.”

“Oh!” she replied, startled. And then it was as if a light bulb lit up in her head. Suddenly, she let out a yelp and grabbed Max’s thigh. “Hurry, Max! Hurry!”

Speeding 15 miles over the speed limit, Max’s car shot down the quiet streets of Roswell. When they reached the hospital, they headed straight for Isabel.

“Mom! Dad!” Liz greeted, giving her parents a quick hug. “Is Izzy ok?” she asked after she had greeted Isabel’s parents, also.

“She’s fine. Alex is there with her,” Mrs. Parker answered Liz after she had given Max a motherly hug. “She said for you to go straight in.”

Liz’s eyes lit up with excitement. This was it; she was really going to witness her nephew or niece’s birth! She was so eager that she had to have Max help her change and scrub down. After a quick kiss, she headed into the delivery room while Max sat down next to her parents to wait.

“Izzy!” Liz called, rushing to her sister-in-law’s side.

“Oh, Liz, thank God you made it. The baby’s coming out,” Isabel gasped out. Reaching over, she grabbed Liz’s hand and squeezed tightly. Turning her head, she squeezed her husband’s hand with her other hand. “I love you, Alex.”

Tears welled up in Alex’s eyes as he leaned down to kiss his beautiful wife. “I love you, too, Izzy. Now, push.”

And she did. She pushed with all of her might and an hour and 2 minutes later, at 3:41 p.m., little Colin Whitman was born, wailing and flailing. When her pink-faced son was placed in her arms, Isabel wept, cradling her new bundle of joy in her arms. Alex soon joined her in her tears, gathering his wife and child into his arms.

Liz crept slowly out and announced to the five nervous people waiting outside, “It’s a boy, Colin Whitman!”

Everyone cheered and more tears flowed as they celebrated the birth of a new generation.

Two hours later, everyone had left except for Max and Liz, who were both still cuddling with the small baby.

Alex walked in with a baby blue teddy bear and a bouquet of roses. Smiling, he handed his wife the roses and set the teddy bear next to her. “For you.”

“Oh, Alex, they’re lovely!” And then she burst into joyful tears.

Liz walked over carefully and placed her nephew into his father’s arms. And as Liz and Max silently made their way out, Liz briefly looked over her shoulder.

They were beautiful, the three of them. As Liz watched, she couldn’t help imagining that it was her and Max there, their baby cradled contently in their loving arms. Max would be a wonderful father, she just knew it. He would love and protect her and their children. If only…

“Liz?” Max asked later that night when they were in his bed.

“Hmm?” Liz asked, exhausted from their love-making.

Max smiled as he took in her drowsy eyelids and flushed cheeks. Her hair was everywhere and there wasn’t a speck of make-up on her face. She had never looked more beautiful, Max decided. “Liz, I love you, so much that I can’t even begin to put it into words. When I see you, I can’t think of anything but you. Your smile haunts me when I’m away from you and when I’m with you, I feel invincible. Today, when I saw you with Colin in your arms, I couldn’t help but picture you with our child. I know we’re both still young and you’ve still got all of your college to go through, but, I, I love you so much, Liz, and I want to spend the rest of forever with you.” He paused and pulled a small box from his bedside drawer. “Elizabeth Parker, will you make me the happiest man in the world and agree to be my wife?”

Liz couldn’t speak, tears flowing down her face. “Oh, Max!” She threw her arms around him, the love of her life, and kissed him all over his face. “Yes, Max, yes! I’ll marry you!”

And as Max held the crying Liz in his arms, he couldn’t have asked for anything more.

EPILOGUE

“Mom, where are my lucky basketball shorts?” nine-year-old Jason hollered from the laundry room where he was busy flinging clothes this way and that.

“In your top drawer!” Liz yelled back while chopping the tomatoes for the salad.

“Mommy! Mommy! Barbie’s head fell off! Mommy! Mommy!” four-year-old Shiri cried frantically, tugging at her mother’s shirt.

“Oh, Shiri, here, let me have her head.” Very carefully, Liz popped Princess Barbie’s head back on.

“Thanks, Mommy!” Shiri shouted gleefully as she ran back to the playroom.

“Liz? My new client and his wife will be here in an hour for lunch! Where’s Colin? He was supposed to be here twenty minutes ago to pick the kids up!” Max shouted over the vacuum which he was using.

“I’m not sure, Max! He must have hit traffic,” Liz answered, finally finishing the salad for the lunch. Max was now a successful lawyer for his and Alex’s firm, Whitman & Evans.

Mom! It’s not there!” Jason yelled, his voice on the edge of hysterical. “My game’s soon, Mom!”

“Check again, Jace! It’s right under your lucky soccer shorts!”

A moment passed by. “Oh, thanks, Mom!”

DING DONG.

The sound of thundering footsteps echoed throughout the $2 million mansion.

While Liz was checking on her pasta, she could hear her children’s excited voices.

“Colin! You’re coming to my game, right? You and Uncle Alex and Auntie Izzy?”

“Of course, kiddo,” seventeen-year-old Colin replied. “Hey, it’s my favorite girl!”

Shiri’s giggle could be heard from the kitchen. She loved her cousin Colin; she and Jason both. Aside from their father and their Uncle Alex, Colin was their ultimate hero.

“Hey, Colin. How’s your senior year going?” Max asked.

“Fine. I’m sorry about being late, Unc, but there was traffic and-“

Max chuckled, “-Hey, it’s ok. But, in order for you guys to make Jason’s game, you need to leave now.”

“Yeah, yeah. We’re going. Bye! Bye Aunt Liz!”

“Bye, Mom!” they chorused. The door slammed shut then and the house was blissfully silent.

“Hey, Honeyeyes, need any help?” Max asked, wrapping his arms around his thirty-five-but-still-the-most-beautiful-woman-ever wife.

Grinning, Liz leaned back against her husband’s chest. She shook her head, “Nope, it’s all done and ready to be eaten.”

“Good,” Max murmured into her neck. Placing wet kisses onto her flesh, he suggested, “Why don’t we go upstairs and get changed, huh?”

Liz giggled and then moaned when Max bit her ear. “How much time do we have?”

“Forty-five minutes.”

Quickly, Liz turned in Max’s embrace and, with desire-heavy eyelids, said huskily, “That should be enough time, hmmm?”

“Time for what, Mrs. Evans?”

“Mmm, I think you know, Mr. Evans.”

When Liz’s hand snaked inside his Dockers, Max was pretty sure he knew what they had time for. Chuckling, he scooped his delectable wife into his arms and carried them into their master bedroom.

When Liz was undressed and lying on their bed, waiting for Max to come to her, she was suddenly hit, once again, with the realization of how lucky she was. She had a loving husband, wonderful kids, and a beautiful home. Life couldn’t be better.

“I love you, Liz, God, do I love you,” Max whispered hoarsely, kissing his wife on the lips.

“I love you, too, Max.”

And so they loved one another for the next forty minutes and for the next fifty years.
