Prologue
“Mama?”
“What, sweetie?”
“I cand fin’ daddy.”
“Aww…”
I lift him up and he settles down on my lap.
“Where did he go?” I ask my four-year-old son sweetly.
“I dun tnow, Mama. We were playin’ hite an’ seet.”
“It’s ‘hide and seek’ baby.” I correct him.
“Rite, hite and seet.” I roll my eyes.
“Well, then obviously you cannot find him because you guys are playing hide and seek.”
“Dats wat I’m sayin’, Mama. I cand fin’ him!” He exclaims.
“Have you looked everywhere?” I ask, ruffling his dark brown hair.
“Yep.” He says, shaking his head.
“Hmm…” I say, tapping my chin.
“Coud you hel’ me, Mama?” He makes those puppy dog eyes and pouts.
And I can’t resist. He looks so much like his father when he does that. And additionally, I always give in when his father does that.
“Sweetie…” I start, remembering that I have several papers to grade.
“Please…” He whines.
I sigh and take my glasses off.
“Okay, then. Lets find your daddy.” I say in a playful tone.
“Yay!” He screams and hops off my lap quickly, tugging me along.
“Now where could that clown be?” I ask my son who just giggles.
And that just wins him a loud kiss on his cheek.
“Yuck.” He says, rubbing his cheek and making a disgusting face.
I laugh. But yeah, his father seems to like that. A lot.
“Okay, then. Where do you propose we should start from?”
He looks horribly confused. “ Popose? Wats dat, Mama?”
“Oh umm… I’ll tell you later.” I answer, remembering that giving him one answer leads to another. And that would definitely give me a headache.
He nods but I know that he will ask me the same question later for sure.
“I think we should start from the kitchen…” I trial off when I hear a moving sound coming from my bedroom.
“Den lets go, Mama.” He says, trying to drag me to the kitchen.
“Shhh… wait, wait.” I say, kneeling beside him.
He scowls. “Wat?”
“Listen…” I tell him.
He bites his lip and looks around, showing that he is listening. He so has picked up that habit from me.
I suddenly remember the task in my hand and lift him up on my hip while standing.
He is getting heavier everyday.
“Wat?” He asks again impatiently.
“I think your daddy is in our bedroom…”
His golden brown eyes lit up. “Really?”
“I think so, baby.” I give him a light kiss on his forehead.
Then I start advancing towards the bedroom.
“Mama?” He whispers.
I stop and look at him.
“Hmm?”
“Me not a baby, Mama.” He says for a hundredth time in his lifetime.
I roll my eyes and sigh.
“Right. You are the oldest person on this planet Earth.”
He grins.
One look at him remind me of what I had lost last time. My world had crumbled down but if it hadn’t been for him and his father, I would have definitely forgotten to smile.
“Mama?”
“Yeah?” I ask, coming out of my busy thoughts.
“Are you thinkin’ aboud him?” He asks, making a concerned face.
I give him a surprised look. My four-year-old son always knows what his mother is thinking.
I just nod and decide to change the subject. But before I could, he says,
“Dun worry, Mama. I’m here.” He says, patting my cheek.
His father always does that whenever I’m upset.
Tears sting my eyes and I hug him tightly. I love him so much, he would never understand.
I don’t pull away so he pats my shoulder and says,
“Mama, I want to fin’ daddy.”
I giggle. He can always change the mood.
I pull away and smile at him.
“Right. Lets go and tell your father how good we both powerpuff girls are.”
But as soon as I say that, I regret it. Because he’s actually a boy.
“But I’m a boy!!” He whines.
“Right, sweetie…”
“No, I’m a boy! An’ I dun like parpuff girls!!”
“Okay, all right. You are a boy and you are…” I trail off when I don’t know what to say.
“Johnny Bravo.” He finishes for me, smiling.
I bite my lip from laughing. My son would always be… my son. Or in his opinion, Johnny Bravo.
“Okay, Mr. Bravo. Lets find your daddy.”
“Yes!”
“Now, we need to be very quite. We don’t need to scare off your daddy.” I whisper.
He nods.
But I’m still wondering how his father has managed to remain in one place without giving up. Looks like he was really in a mood to play hite and seet. Umm… I mean, hide and seek.
I tiptoe to the bedroom and my son puts his hand on his mouth, trying not to giggle but could not succeed.
“Sshhh, baby.”
He nods but giggles again. I roll my eyes. Kids.
I open the door quietly and that’s when I see three fingers under the bed.
I don’t tell my son or he would scream and stuff.
I quickly run and his father almost curses when I squeeze his fingers.
Me and my son laugh loudly.
He comes out of his hiding place and rubs his fingers.
“That was a bad move.” He tells me.
I just shrug and my son laughs louder.
We sit on the bed.
“You know, this is cheating.” My husband tells me.
“How?” I ask and my son keeps a straight face.
But my husband does not fall for our innocent looks and jumps on us, tickling us both.
But thankfully, after two minutes, the doorbell rings.
“Don’t think you’ll get away with it.” He warns me more than to my son.
I poke my tongue at him and leave the room before he could grab me.
My son runs to the door but I stop him, reminding that we should always see who is outside the door first.
He just nods.
And that is none other than his grandmother.
“Mummy!” I say, opening the door wide.
She hugs me and then turns to my son who looks very happy to see her.
“And how is my baby??” She asks.
“I’m not a baby.” My son corrects her as she lifts him up.
“Oh, right. You are the oldest person on planet Earth.” She tells him, glancing at me.
He nods.
“Okay, then. Are you ready to go, Brad?” She asks him and he shouts ‘yes!’.
After five minutes, I hand her his bag.
“Don’t worry. I as well as you father will look after him like we always do.”
I roll my eyes.
“Yeah and the greatest example of that would be dad giving my son hundreds of chocolates.” I say.
She smiles innocently and pinches Brad's cheek lightly.
“Lets go before your mom changes her mind.” She tells him.
After saying good-byes, I close the door and pick up the mess on the way to bedroom.
As soon as I enter, my husband grabs me and pins me to the door.
I giggle but that comes out more like a moan as he starts sucking my neck.
“I told you that you wouldn’t be able to get away with it.” He mumbles before capturing my mouth with his.
After some minutes, when he finally enters me, I remember the time when we first did it. And the circumstances that we have been through. It wasn’t so easy but we made it.
“God, I love you.” He says, spilling his seed inside me.
“I love you too.”
