Summary: Omakynee is Liz, just work with me it's going to get better. She stumbles across an old room in her palace and finds something extremely surprising.
It started when I was little. I had run away from my governess and was
hiding in the curtains near the rumoured old secret passage, I had tried to
find that passage for so long and just when I gave up on finding it I
stumbled across it by accident. She had almost got me when I stepped
back and knocked a raised part of the wall and a door opened and I
rolled backwards down the stairs through dust in the dark. I yelped when
I landed at the bottom on my behind and I looked round, I stood up and
dusted off my underclothes and looked round. There were large painted
portraits of my ancestors on the walls and dust was the main theme here.
I walked down the passage till I came to an old room. There was a desk,
a chest, a bed and a book on top of the desk. I picked up the book but it
was in old Antarian. Xoan would be able to translate it for me. I put it
back down on the desk and looked into the chest, there was an old dust
covered outfit and broadsword. I picked it up and unsheathed it; it was
still shiny and perfect. I could see my brown hair in it and was amazed
that it hadn’t rusted up at all. I rose it above my head then swung it round
listening to it move through the air. I put it back in its sheath and laid it
back in the chest and shut it back up. I pick up the journal and left, I
wandered back along the corridor and up the stairs I had rolled down and
out through the door back into the large thick red curtains that framed the
windows near the secret door.
I peeked out and saw the coast all clear, I began to run along the hall.
When I was running no one could catch me, not even if they were on
horse or land jet. I was born a free spirit, no one can outrun me, and I
raced through towards Xoan’s office and found him shouting at a phial of
bluish liquid.
“Xoan is it being silly again?”
“Princess Omakynee” he grinned and turned towards me, I ran over and
he lifted me up into his arms “So what brings you here? I thought you
said my lab was too smelly for you?”
“I found something that I need you to translate for me”
“Oh? You’ve been in the library again. What did your governess tell you
about climbing that ladder?”
“I wasn’t in the library Xoan. I found the secret passage and I want you
to translate this journal for me” I explained and he put me down and took
the journal. He looked over it then opened the silver chute and popped it
in then pressed the button. It scanned each page all at once and began to
print out the pages in New Antarian.
“Thank you Xoan” I said as he handed me the sheaves of paper. I
skipped out, round the corner then bumped into my governess. She
grabbed me by the wrist and shook her head
“Princess what am I going to do? There is only half an hour for you to get
ready! You’re caked in dust and dirt and your hair is a tangled mess! Your
parents will surely fire me for this! You’ve been with that idiot scientist all
this time!”
“Xoan isn’t an idiot scientist! He’s smarter than you Governess Yuko!”
“Hah well that wouldn’t be hard” she said as she continued to pull me
along “And what is this? I don't want you reading anything but the books I
provide for you!” she went to take it off me but I pulled out of her grasp
and stepped back
“I will get dressed for the ball but you are not to take this off me!” I
snapped angrily clutching the paper to my chest
“Very well your Highness” she said and put her hand on my back and led
me to my room. My dress was waiting for me on my four-poster bed
along with my stockings and my shoes were laid out carefully on the
floor. I sat on the bed and she pulled on my stockings and then put the
dress over my head and fastened it up. I sat down on my dressing table
chair and she did my hair up into a bun with curls around it. She carefully
placed my little crown over the bun then helped me into my shoes and
put a light shawl around my shoulders.
“There!” she said with a smile “Now you look like a presentable lady”
there was a knock at the door and it was my body guard Lex coming to
escort me. If I went anywhere that didn’t have high cover then I had to
have him with me. The ball was in my parent’s castle by the sea. He
escorted me along the hall and down the marble stairs out to the Land
Jet. He sat in the cabin with me as we drove and a few moments later it
stopped. He helped me out and into the reception where my older brother
and sister were waiting. Avana and Demitri where standing there like they
own the place. I was very sick of them; they were perfect and never
misbehaved like I did. They were almost ten years older than me and
treated me like a baby. Avana used to play with me when she was
younger but then decided it was too babyish and she ignored me from
then on. They were always mean to me and we didn’t get out, too bad
daddy saw me as his favourite.
“Good evening Sister” said Demitri calmly
“Good evening Brother” I said and bowed to him. Even though we didn’t
get on I still had the utmost respect for them “Sister”
“Sister” she nodded “I hope you’re going to behave like the lady you are
supposed to be. I hear mother and father and going to choose your
husband to be tonight,” she said with a hidden smirk. When they were
sixteen they were married off, Avana was married to King Zan of Antar
and Demitri was married off to Lady Cameron, Lord High Priest Larek’s
daughter. I was worried that I was going to married off to Prince Kivar or
his brother Prince Nichol. The doors opened and the trumpets blew, the
announcer shouted out our names.
“Their Royal Highnesses Queen Avana of Antar, Prince Demitri of the
House of Heike and Crown Princess Omakynee of the house of
Paark’ven!” he bellowed and we entered onto the dance floor. Mama and
Papa were sat at the other end in their throne watching us and Demitri
and Avana joined their other halves and began to dance. I stood there
like an idiot until three squabbling princes stumbled forward.
“Crown Princess Omakynee will you dance with us?” asked Prince Kivar
the oldest one there.
“All of you? At the same time?” I asked confused. He laughed madly like I
had cracked the funniest joke; he took me in his arms and began to
dance. He kept stepping on my feet and kicking my ankles, I groaned in
pain and stepped back from him and Prince Nichol stepped forward and
began to swing me round like a baton. I slipped and landed on my behind
and the crowd gasped
“You really need dance lessons!” he mumbled and War Lord Rath stepped
forward and helped me up.
“Ignore him and his two left feet. We all know he can’t dance” he smiled
and I moved into his arms and began to dance. It was nice and soft and I
enjoyed it. I had a big smile on my face but knew that I wasn’t the girl his
parents wanted him to marry. They had asked Princess Vilandra and he
was going to her. He was my distant cousin after all and I was glad he
would go to someone who needed him more than I. But I had heard that
his heart belonged to a scullery maid, sure they were only rumours but I
had heard that she was very nice and he loved her very much despite his
betrothal to Vilandra.
“Thank you for the dance Rath”
“My pleasure, you’re not growing up too fast are you?”
“Me?” I asked. I was only ten and he was fifteen, a good five years
between us “Never. I’m still a kid”
“Well if you ever need anything don't hesitate to contact me” I smiled and
nodded then moved through the floor towards the wall to sit down. Xoan
appeared out of nowhere and knelt down next to me
“I have a present for you Omakynee” he whispered, he was the only I
truly let call me by my name.
“Ahem!” coughed mama, as she and Papa came up behind him “Professor
Xoan aren’t you supposed to be in laboratory?”
“I wanted to give Oma… Her highness a present for her betrothal”
“We haven’t announced it yet Xoan. Go join the guests while we talk to
her then announce it”
“Yes highnesses” he stalked off into the crowd and they turned to me
“Omakynee we’ve spoken to Nichol and Kivar’s parents and we’ve agreed
that Kivar would be better suited to you. After your little incident on the
dance floor Nichol doesn’t want to be associated with your common
clumsiness and it’s not the first time it’s happened. In six years time you
shall be wed to him and you shall become Queen Omakynee of the House
of Deille”
“Yes mama” I nodded feeling trapped. I wish my parents hadn’t done this,
but every parent of Royalty and Nobility did it. They were following
tradition. A tradition I would have to follow if I ever had children. Mama
hugged me and papa patted my shoulder and they went back to their
thrones. I scowled and got bored of sitting round I was betrothed. I had
done what they had wanted now I just wanted to go back and read that
translation. Then suddenly I remembered Xoan, I gathered my flowing
skirt up and hurried out quickly and quietly and headed to Xoan’s office.
“Xoan! Xoan where are you?” I called looking round the smelly lab and
saw him slumped against a cupboard “Xoan?” there was a red patch on
his chest and he was limp. I clapped my hand over my mouth and
stepped back. I bumped into something and turned round quickly and saw
my governess smirking at me.
“I despise your parents, your brother and sister and most of all you. I
work for the skins and I am a rebel, first mission was destroy Xoan and
then the court one by one. It’s perfect that you have interrupted me, now
I can kill you too!” she pulled out a curved dagger and raised it in her
hand.
“Omakynee!” I heard Xoan cry out and then he blasted her with his dying
strength. I screamed loud, that something else I was good at. No one else
could scream as loud as I could, not even Avana. Soon enough guards
were coming fast into the lab and they checked Xoan who was dead. They
checked over Yuko but she was dead too, they looked to me
“Are you okay highness?” I nodded and cleared my throat
“Governess Yuko killed Xoan. She was going to kill me; she was a skin
and a rebel. She said she was here to kill the court,” I explained and they
began cording off the scene. Lex came and escorted me back to my
room, I pulled off my tight shoes and stocking and stripped out of my
dress into my underclothes. I stood there in my white vest and bloomers
undid my hair and pulled out that paper. I read the first few lines about
how it belonged to my great, great, great, great uncle Dimitri, he was a
skilled swordsman and warrior. He protected the people before tradition
became law.
