Post by FallenMagic »

Author's Note: Here it is guys! A new part! I'm so sorry for it being so terribly late! Blame RL! Well even though I wanted to add a couple more things to it, I decided that I've kept you guys waiting long enough. So I've cut the chapter up into two. Hope you guys like it. And thank you for waiting so patiently and for all the bumps! :D

Part 91

The air was now crackling with power. The intensity of it left both Tess and Ava shaken. For Tess it was like seeing a ghost. There was no way Liz could be alive and in Roswell at that! Isabel’s words came rushing back to her now. Hadn’t Isabel insisted that Liz was alive?

She was right! She was right! The words kept repeating themselves in Tess’s mind as she stared at the fiery image of Liz. Yet even as she heard Isabel’s words in her head and saw Liz standing right there in front of her, she felt numb from shock. In a daze she wondered how Max would react to this piece of news but she was too much in shock to really understand the implication of Liz being here.

Tess watched in silence as Liz shot out again, this time purposely missing Ava by a scant few inches. Ava ducked, stifling a yelp. Liz smiled coldly, her eyes and hands trained on Ava.

Is this really Liz? Tess wondered. This cold, vindictive and bitter Liz was do different from the passive girl she had known only months ago. What had she gone through? Where had she been that changes her so much?

Ava, on the other hand, was now crawling to her feet, keeping Liz in sight. Her mind was whirling with this new twist. Desperately she tried to figure out how this happened. Liz was supposed to be dead! She shot Tess a look and by the looks of her it looked like she was even more shocked that Ava herself.

That rules out the possibility that she, or anyone else, knew about Liz all along. Ava mused as she regarded Liz warily.

Liz had now put down her hand and was just staring fixedly at Ava. Yet even with her hand down, her skin flickered with the green energy web. There was no doubt in Tess or Ava’s mind that Liz was ready to strike within seconds if she felt the need to do so.

“You know what, Ava?” Liz said, her voice flat yet her eyes blazing with fury. “You really piss me off.”

Ava gave her a bored, indifferent look. She fought hard to keep the nervousness and surprise of her face. “I kinda figured that part out.” She replied sarcastically.

Liz took a step closer, the energy increasing and the flicker on her skin reaching a maddening pitch. “Good! Then I won’t have to explain to you why you’d better start praying.” Liz shot back coldly.

“Was that a threat?” Ava asked derisively. She regarded Liz coolly. “I’d say you’re the one who’s going to need the prayers.”

“Don’t underestimate me, Ava.” Liz told her. “You have no idea what you’re up against.”

This time there was genuine amusement in Ava’s laugh as she chuckled, “Little lost human girl comes back after a few months with powers and she thinks she can challenge me?”

Liz lifted a brow in a challenge. “Want to take me on?”

Ava paused, as if considering. Then a predatory smile lit her face. “You’re on, Parker.”

The further away Alex and Serena got from where they had split up with Liz, the more unsettled Alex began to feel. More than once he turned around, as if debating heading back but then ignoring the feeling, used to move on with Serena, looking for any sign of the dupes.

“I wish we had some idea of where she is.” Serena said as they scouted the area.

Alex nodded almost distractedly. “Yeah. It would make things easier, that’s for sure.”

Serena glanced at Alex as she stopped to check for any energy vibes. She noticed Alex looking back the way they came before turning away, uneasy. She laid a gentle hand on his arm, getting his attention. “What’s troubling you, Alex?” she asked.

Alex sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I’m not sure.” He replied honestly. “But something is really making me uneasy.”

“Something…or someone?” Serena asked carefully.

Alex shot her a started look. Serena just shrugged. “You’ve been acting strange ever since we left Liz to go her own way.” Serena said.

“Did something seem…off about Liz today?” Alex asked suddenly.

Serena paused, considering Liz’s behavior before she nodded reluctantly. “She seemed very disinterested…” Serena said. “Kinda funny considering she was itching to have a go at Ava a few days back.”

Alex nodded. “And she seemed too eager to split up.” He added. He shook his head, talking almost to himself. “Something just isn’t right.”

“Nothing coming off from her in your connection though?” Serena asked.

Alex concentrated briefly on feeling Liz’s emotions before he shook his head. “Nothing. Exactly the same as she was before.” Then he frowned as he honed in on something. It was very slight, barely noticeable but Alex caught it at once. “Wait…I can feel something from here…it’s very faint…but it almost feels like…anticipation?” He broke off to give Serena a puzzled look. “What is she up to?”

Serena was now looking worried. “Focus, Alex. Do you feel anything else?”

Alex didn’t need to be told so. He was already focusing only on Liz and he felt the calm emotions coming off her fade every moment, replaced by anticipation, fear and a thirst for revenge. Alex’s blood ran cold when he felt a thrill of satisfaction that bordered dangerously on revenge, run through Liz. Suddenly he was bowled over as the calm façade Liz had been sending to him broke. He was flooded with Liz’s anger and vindictiveness.

Struggling to partially block the emotions a coming off from his best friend, Alex grasped Serena’s arm to stop himself from falling over.

“Alex!” Serena cried fearfully. “What’s going on?”

“Liz…” Alex gasped. “She’s been blocking me this entire time!” He pulled himself upright to look at Serena with a harried expression on his face. “She’s found Ava! That’s what she was up to all along! She’s going to take her down…alone.”

The jeep roared down the street towards where Kyle had left Tess alone with Ava. In the jeep sat Michael, Max, Isabel, Maria and Kyle. Kyle had reached them only moments before and after briefly filling them in on what had happened, Max had jumped into the jeep, ready to go.

“Kyle, hurry.” Isabel said, her voice strained and worried.

Kyle shot Isabel a quick look in the rearview mirror and nodded, increasing his speed. His heart was racing wildly in his chest as he considered all that Ava could do to Tess. More than once he cursed himself for leaving her. He would never forgive himself if something happened to her.

Max, on the other hand, was doing the self-blame bit also. He cursed himself for letting them go off by themselves. He shouldn’t have let them. He should have told them to stay inside.

Michael glanced behind him to look at Max and saw the look on his best friend’s face. Sighing in exasperation he growled, “Max, quit with the guilt trip and focus on what we have to do.”

Max turned to glare at him before relaxing when he realized that Michael was right. He had to be alert. “How far away are we now, Kyle?” Max asked.

“Almost there.” Kyle replied, his eyes trained on the road. “Around two blocks away.”

“She’ll be fine.” Maria said trying to spread optimism in the car when she herself was unconsciously reaching for her vials. “Tess can handle herself.”

Kyle didn’t say anything instead his grip tightened on the steering wheel and he just pressed down on the accelerator. No one told him to slow down. He was just a block away when suddenly Kyle swerved the car, turning sharply to the left.

“Where the hell are you going?” Michael demanded. “I thought you said that you left Tess the other way?”

“They’re not there anymore.” Kyle answered shortly.

“What do you mean?” Isabel asked. “How do you know that?”

“Look, I just do all right?” Kyle shouted. “Don’t ask me how but trust me here!”

“It’s the connection.” Max suddenly spoke up. “It’s the connection that was formed when Kyle helped Tess break out of the mind warp.”

“Whatever it is, I’m not about to question it!” Kyle snapped. Then he paled. He turned briefly to give the others a panicked look. “I think she’s hurt!”

“Damn it, Kyle!” Maria suddenly yelled. “Just drive!”

“I am!” Kyle shot back then his voice reduced to a whisper as he prayed, “Please Buddha, God…anyone… let her be all right.”

Serena and Alex were running as fast as they could towards where Alex had pin pointed Liz’s position. He knew that Liz had found Ava and if he and Serena could just get to Liz in time, they could help her take Ava down. He didn’t even want to think about taking her down by herself.

“That is the stupidest thing Liz could have done.” Serena panted.

“Liz isn’t really thinking about anything except revenge right now.” Alex replied grimly.

Serena looked over at him to ask hi to explain but then kept quiet. She didn’t really want to know what that meant. Instead she said, “We’re almost there. Another block or so.”

Alex nodded, feeling the energy waves and emotions coming at him more strongly. “I know. I just hope we aren’t too late…”

* * * * * * * * * * *

The jeep screeched to a halt a few feet away from the alley Kyle was sure Tess was in. The alley was partially blocked by a dumpster which was lying sideways, obviously caught in the cross fire. He jumped out of the jeep before anyone else.

The others quickly followed behind but Max was the only one who was grounded to his spot. No one noticed his dazed and stunned expression. Nor did they hear the anguish and confusion in his voice as he stared towards where the others were heading off to and whispered one word.

“Liz…”

* * * * * * * * * * *

As they stood facing each other, Liz glared at Ava, her anger showing.

“You hurt Alex, you hurt Maria and you did your damn best to hurt everyone else…” Liz said to Ava, her voice tinged with cold fury. “You led me on, made me think you were my friend and all this time…? All this time you were the one we should have been looking out for. Not Rath, Lonnie or Nicholas but you!”

Ava smiled, almost looking pleased. “You’re giving me too much credit.” She replied. “I barely had to even try. You guys were too easy.”

“We were blind, mindwarped!” Liz shot back. “You were too much of a coward to take us all on so you resorted to tricks!”

“Anything for power… anything for Antar!” Ava replied coldly. “I didn’t choose the coward’s way…I choose the smart way. I was not stupid that I’d walk into Roswell and take you all on without any back up!”

“What happened to Kivar and his army?” Liz asked with a sneer. Though both her own and Ava’s hands were still raised, they both made no move to shoot.

Ava laughed, the sound chilling. “Who? The skins? They are utterly useless. I told Kivar so from the very beginning but he wouldn’t listen to me. Stupid fool!”

“I’m sure he wouldn’t like to hear you say that. He is, after all, your so-called king.” Liz pointed out.

Ava just shrugged her shoulders, an amused smile on her lips. “That’s what he thinks.”

“It was my entire plan!” She told Liz arrogantly. “It was my plan to fool you people into thinking I was an ally, my plan to try to kill Max and then have you ‘save’ him in New York. It was I who made Alex decode the book…” she paused and grinned smugly at Liz. “It was because of me that Max got Tess pregnant…”

That threw Liz over the thin edge of control she was at. Just hearing bout Max and Tess…and how it was Ava’s doing pushed her to a rage she had never experienced. Eyes flashing with unconcealed anger and hatred, Liz ruthlessly attacked Ava, one shot after another not giving the other girl time enough to even counter attack. Had it been a human or even an alien with weak powers, he would never have been able to sustain the injuries Ava had and still be able to fight back. But Ava wasn’t like normal hybrids. She had more power and more stamina in her genes than the other hybrids combined. With blood oozing down her face and bruises marring her once perfect skin, Ava struggled to her feet, this time being successful in bringing up her shield.

The garbage metal cans she had fallen behind had allowed her a few seconds she had needed to call up her powers. Now with her shield in place she stood back up, once more facing Liz. Liz, with her hair flying in the breeze, the green energy flickering madly across her skin and her eyes hard and cold, looked like some beautiful deity, powerful and undefeatable.

“If you give up now, I’ll try to make it almost painless.” She said snidely as she regarded the battered dupe.

But Ava only smirked coldly. “No chance in hell am I even near defeat.” She replied. “I haven’t even begun yet.” Though Ava thought that there might be a broken rib or two from when she had hit the wall with full force and she might have suffered cuts and bruises, she was in no way unable to fight. If Liz was itching for a fight, well she would give her one.

“Let’s see what you’ve learned while you were away, Parker!” Ava taunted as she caught Liz off guard and blasted her.

Liz gasped in pain and shock as she was pushed back and ended up falling on her back on the hard concrete floor. Within seconds, though, she was back up on her feet, countering Ava’s attack with her own. But she had forgotten about Ava’s shield. Her shot bounced harmlessly off it, leaving Ava untouched. Ava smiled at Liz as she once more shot at Liz, making her stumble and said, “I doubt you’re able to call up a shield.”

“You’re often wrong.” Liz shot back as she hit at Ava’s shield again, trying to weaken it. Though she didn’t admit it, Ava had been right. Pulling up a shield was something she couldn’t do as yet and she thought might never be able to. And she had a feeling Ava knew she was bluffing. She shot at Ava’s shield thrice more but each time it just wavered briefly before returning back to the way it was.

“Afraid you’ll loose if I get in a shot, Ava?” Liz asked, almost in frustration at not being able to break the shield.

“No…” Ava replied with an odd smile. “Just preparing…”

Before Liz could think about what that meant, she gasped in shock as she felt Ava forcefully enter her mind. She felt Ava slowly begin to mind warp her, at the same time messing with her head. She didn’t have time to wonder how this had happened, how Ava had managed to creep in unnoticed by her. She could only stare in open-mouthed horror as she began to loose all control over her senses and began to react to whatever mind warp Ava was beginning on her. She saw Ava’s cold, satisfied smile before she her grip on reality start to slip.

“No!” she managed to bite out and weakly raised her hand to shoot at Ava but could barely make out what was real and what images Ava was feeding her. She tried desperately to fight them off but she knew she was loosing the battle.

I don’t want to die this way! Her mind screamed. Not without putting up a good fight. Not without bringing her down!

But she couldn’t even manage to raise her hand anymore. As she fell to her knees she heard someone shout her name…someone who sounded like…

“Max…” She whispered weakly as she recognized the voice.

* * * * * * * * * * *

It was a feeling he’d never thought he’d feel again but still it was one he knew he could never forget. It was like a warm tingle starting at the base of his neck that slowly spread and cocooned him in its warm and comforting embrace. Max felt his connection with Liz, long dead, spring back to life as if it had caught fire and he felt it then…he felt her!

Liz! Liz was here! He hardly dared to believe that thought; could barely begin to ask how that was possible but he was already running in her direction, something inside of him telling him that she was really here. Max pushed past Kyle and Michael who had just gotten out of the jeep. He ran fast, his heart beating wildly in his chest as he felt his connection increase with every step he took towards her general direction. He halted abruptly just inside the alley, his hair askance as he desperately raked over the alley. At first he couldn’t see Liz and he panicked, refusing to believe that what he was feeling was untrue. He stepped fully inside, and once more looked around. It was then he saw her, Liz…falling to he knees, head in her hands.

“Liz…” he whispered, shaken and then louder. “Liz!”

But she didn’t reply or move, still holding her head in her hands, her face looking down. Even through he couldn’t see her face he could feel her struggle through the connection that had unexpectedly sprung up again. Liz was desperately trying to fight off some inner demons and for a second Max didn’t understand what was going on. Then he saw Ava, standing not far from Liz, eyes closed obviously mind warping. Until he had seen her he had forgotten all about why they were here in the first place. He heard Kyle come running behind him.

“Did you find Tess?” Kyle asked as he and Michael came to Max in hurry then abruptly stopping when they saw Liz and Ava. “Is that – but…” Kyle stammered, fixated by seeing Liz.

“Liz…its Liz…” Michael said in bewilderment, looking at Max for confirmation.

Max heard them but didn’t reply, staring almost in disbelief at Ava and Liz. “No!” He whispered fiercely as he realized what Ava was trying to do. His hand flew up in an instant and prepared to blast Ava. “No! You will not hurt her!” He shouted.

Ava had been so intent on mind warping, so sure in her belief that no one would find them, that she wasn’t aware of anything or anyone around her except for Liz. That’s why when Max shouted, her eyes flew open in surprise. Her control over the mind warp wavered as she saw Max getting ready to strike and she threw up a shield. Max’s blast harmlessly hit the shield. But Ava hadn’t been able to hold the shield till the end and so she staggered a bit when she felt the force of Max’s blast on it. That one shot was enough to make Ava loose total control over her mind warp. Not being prepared for any outside attack, Ava had let herself concentrate fully on mind warping Liz, secure in the fact that Tess lay unconscious on the floor, bleeding.

Ava struggled to grab control over her mind warp but Liz had grabbed the few seconds reprieve and had fought against it, breaking it. She was now on her feet, her hand trained Ava, her eyes cold, furious and determined. Without any preamble Liz shot out again at Ava. Ava stumbled and Liz shot again. Refusing to go down Ava tried to get in a shot but it missed Liz. That only spurred Liz to hit her again, this time bringing her to her knees, her face bleeding, her body bruised. When Liz saw Max and Michael and Isabel begin to move in to help she snapped, “This is my fight!”

They hesitated but then backed off as Liz and Ava continued their fight. Ava managed to get in a few more shots at Liz but they were weak, unable to do any real damage. Ava was losing and she knew it. With some desperation, she shot out at Liz as she tried to find a way out of the alley. But Liz saw that and wouldn’t let that happen. Determined not to let her slip, Liz threw one last shot at her, this time keeping her pinned to the wall behind her.

Max, Kyle, Michael, Isabel and Maria, who were now all in the alley, watched in stunned silence at Liz’s portrayal of power. Liz kept her eyes trained on Ava, not about to let her down. She had also pinned Ava’s hands, making her helpless.

“I can mind warp you, you bitch!” Ava spat out angrily as she struggled against the invisible bonds.

Liz just looked at her knowingly. “You can try but it won’t do any good.” She told Ava. “You caught me unprepared before; I’m not letting it happen again.” Without waiting for Ava’s answer, she addressed the people she hadn’t spoken to in months over her shoulder. “Kyle, Isabel…go make sure if Tess is okay. Ava had knocked her about pretty badly.”

Kyle and Isabel hesitated, debating whether to ask questions now or not but then Kyle, worried about Tess hurried to her, cradling her head in his lap. Isabel tried to check the extent of Tess’s injuries. Max was standing unsure what to do or say. Michael was throwing Liz distrustful looks, unsure whether it was really her. Maria, on the other hand had tears rolling down her cheek.

“Oh god…Liz!” She cried. She made a move as if to rush to Liz but something in Liz’s expression disconcerted her. “What? How?” she ventured hesitantly with a sob.

Liz turned to give her best friend the briefest of smiles. “Thank you for believing, Maria.” She said. Maria gave her a startled look, not at what she had said but the way it was said, in a wry yet flat tone. Liz’s gaze flickered to Max and then to Tess who was now sitting up, leaning against Kyle. Her gaze settled for the briefest of seconds on Tess and she was reminded of the new relationship between her and Max. She averted her eyes quickly, hurt and anger filling them.

Ava noticed and she realized all of a sudden that Liz thought Tess really was pregnant. She didn’t know how Liz had found out that piece of news but she was determined to milk it for all it was worth.

“Why are so worried about Tess, Liz?” Ava asked in a mock-sympathetic tone. “When she’s your competition? She’s the one you should be worried about. You should have let her die. There is no other way you can get Max back. You do know that she’s…”

Ava’s words were cut off when two energy blasts suddenly were aimed at her and merged to hit her. The green and blue light of the blasts blinded everyone, making them avert their eyes. When they turned to look back at Ava she was crumpled on the floor, dead.

Frantic eyes turned to look at the people from whom the blast had come from and to everyone’s surprise they saw Tess and Serena with their hands up in the air from when they had struck.

Tess was staring hatefully at Ava’s prone body, half sitting up. Serena on the other hand was now walking steadily towards Liz with Alex. She ignored the looks everyone else was shooting them as she regarded Liz with mild anger.

“That was one hell of a stupid thing you did, Liz.” Serena chided.

Liz shrugged, her eyes falling on Ava. “It was worth it.”

“You could have died!” Alex put in, his worry finally showing its full extent now that he knew Liz was safe.

“I know how to handle myself.” Liz replied.

Alex just reached out and touched the cut above her eye lightly, making her wince. “Yeah, sure…” he replied softly.

Isabel watched the exchange with tears slipping down her face. Her grip on Tess tightened when she heard his voice and felt his soothing presence. She saw Maria trembling where she stood and Michael standing beside her. She saw Max looking bewildered, a million questions on his face.

Slowly, with the tears blurring her vision, Isabel got to her feet. Alex, feeling her nearby, turned suddenly away from Liz and looked at her almost shyly. Isabel took a step forward, her footsteps shaky.

With a choked sob she whispered, “Alex?”

“Hi, Iz…” he replied, smiling gently at her. At the sound of his voice she flew at him, wrapping him in his arms, crying uncontrollably. Alex hugged her back tightly, stroking her hair.

“God, I thought I’d never be able to hold you again!” He whispered to her. “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.” He didn’t know what exactly he was apologizing for he held on to Isabel tightly as he taking her in.

Isabel looked at him with her tear streaked face, and said fiercely, “Don’t ever leave me again! Never! I don’t know what happened, how you’re standing here but I don’t care. Just never leave me again!”

Alex leaned down and kissed her fiercely. “I promise.” He replied. Then, looking up he saw Maria standing close to him, watching. Without a word he opened his arms for her and she flew into them.

For a moment they stood there as the others watched tearfully. Max, who had been watching Liz all this time, began to move to her, to talk to her. She stood apart from everyone, watching yet not part taking. Max approached her but stopped a distance away from her though all he wanted to do was hold her and never let her go. Somehow though, he felt Liz needed distance right now.

Liz turned slightly to look at him, her arms wrapped around herself tightly. For a second Max saw something akin to anger and pain flash in them before they grew unreadable. Her features were also cold, icy as she regarded him.

“Liz…” Max began hesitantly, unsure what to say or ask. “We thought…we thought you were dead…how…?”

“Never got on the plane, Max.” Liz replied. She looked over at Serena who was eying Michael carefully as was Michael. “Serena saved me.”

“Who is Serena?” Max asked. He looked towards the blonde girl. “Her?”

Liz nodded. “Yeah…” he voice grew soft. “Her. She saved me and Alex…helped us.” Then her voice turned bitter as she said, “I wish she’d let me get on the plane.”

“Liz!” Max gasped at her words. He took a step towards her. “You’re not really saying that. You can’t mean…”

Liz took a step back when he took one towards her. She gave him a sharp look. “What? That I was dead?” She laughed bitterly. “I don’t know what I want anymore…”

“Liz, what is going on?” Max asked, confused and worried by her demeanor. “You’re not thinking clearly.”

“Oh I think I am, Max.” Liz replied. She glanced towards Tess and Kyle who were now standing close, able to hear everything. She caught their shocked look when they heard her but she just smiled coldly. She turned to look back at Max, forcing the hurt and anger out of her voice. “I think I see things very clearly…”

“What do you, Liz?” Max asked desperately. “What are you talking about?” He took another step closer to her, wanting to hold her but Liz’s hand shot up, stopping him.

“Don’t, Max!” This time Max heard her voice waver, almost as if she was about to cry. Liz’s eyes misted over as she shook her head. “Don’t come any closer.”

“Liz…” he whispered in anguish, unable to understand why Liz was acting this way.

“I have to go…” Liz said suddenly and turned around quickly and almost ran back out.

Serena though, haven seen and heard everything, along with everyone else, reached out to stop her. “Liz…?” she asked quietly. But Liz just shook her head, a single tear falling down her cheek.

“Please, Serena…” Liz whispered. “I need to go.”

For a second Serena looked at her carefully then turned to look at Alex who was watching Liz with a worried, yet understanding expression. He nodded imperceptibly, telling Serena to let Liz go for now.

Serena dropped Liz’s arm and nodded. “We’ll talk later.” She told Liz. “Back at home.”

Liz didn’t argue but ran out on the street. Tears coursed down her cheek as images of Max and Tess flashed in her mind. She might be back but things were not going to be the same anymore…

Part 92

Max watched Liz’s retreating back with dismay and a wild urge to stop her. But he hesitated, remembering the look on Liz’s face when he had tried to approach her earlier. Her words rung in his head and he refused to believe that this was the same Liz. She sounded so bitter, so…broken.

He didn’t know why she was like this, why she had retreated against his touch. He wanted to ask but was afraid to hear the answer. It struck him that if Liz had been alive all this time then she had been consciously blocking him, stopping him from feeling her presence. There was no other way he could not have felt her. She was in him, in his soul. It hurt him to know she had done it purposely but in a way he understood why she had done it. It appeared as if she had been in Roswell all this time to be able to know apparently so much that had been going on.

Why hadn’t he known she was alive before? Some part of him asked accusingly and ashamed. Why hadn’t he seen through the lies?

Max felt someone lay a hand on his shoulder and pulling himself from his thoughts, he turned to see it was Alex. Alex had been watching him closely and felt that Max and Liz needed to talk things out, clear out some problems. He didn’t know how they would skirt around the pregnancy issue, nor did he know how Liz would react but at this moment, Liz needed to feel something…anything expect bitterness which he could sense coming off her.

“Go after her!” Alex ordered Max.

“What?” Max asked a little bewildered by the suddenness of Alex’s words.

Alex grinned a little at him as he inclined his way towards where Liz had gone. “Go after her, man!”

Max hesitated. “It doesn’t look like she wants to talk to me – or anyone – at this moment.” Max replied, yet looking longing in the direction Liz had disappeared to. He could still feel her essence in him and it was driving him insane.

Alex gave Max a not-so-gentle shove. “Listen; if she needs anyone right now, it’s you.” Alex advised seriously. “Now go!”

Max didn’t need to be told twice. Not caring that everyone was eager to know about where Liz and Alex had been, how they survived and who Serena was, he rushed out after Liz, hoping he could catch up with her.

Everything else could come later.

* * * * * * * * * * *

With her head bowed down, Liz walked slowly on the deserted stretch of road. The tears that she had been holding at bay were now slipping down her cheek and she made no effort to swipe them away. She had done it. She had managed to bring down Ava. Her friends were safe.

Well as safe as they could be with Kivar still about. She briefly wondered what he would do when his top sub-ordinate did not report to him. She didn’t really care. At this moment she didn’t care about anything. Her mind was still reeling with the last jibe Ava had thrown at her just before she died.

“She’s the one you should be worried about. You should have let her die. There is no other way you can get Max back. You do know that she’s…”

Pregnant.
Liz’s mind cruelly finished. Liz felt her heart clench in pain at the thought. It didn’t matter. She tried to tell herself. She didn’t care if Max was with Tess…she wasn’t ready for a relationship with Max right now anyway. Yet it still hurt to know about Max’s exploit.

“No!” Liz whispered to herself, squeezing her eyes hut in effort to forget. “I will not think about this.” Maybe if she repeated it to herself often enough, her mind would get the hint.

She heard the sound of running feet behind her and thought she heard someone call her name. Brushing it off, too deep in her grief to care, she continued walking. But then she heard her name being called again and it was closer this time.

Max! She realized suddenly. Turning almost warily she saw him running towards her. She stopped waiting for him to catch up to her, wondering why he was coming after her.

Max hurried up to her and then stopped right in front of her, his eyes shining with puzzlement.

“Liz!” he cried. “Why did you leave like that?” he asked.

Liz regarded him indifferently not letting her hurt show. “What was the point in staying?” she asked.

“The point in…” Max trailed off in surprise. “Every one is shock to see you. They want to know where you were, what happened…. How can you say there’s no point?”

“Serena and Alex can handle it.” Liz replied.

“I’m not talking about who’s going to handle the explanations.” Max replied, still puzzled over her reaction. “I’m talking about how everyone was anxious to make sure you’re okay.”

“Almost everyone.” Liz bit out.

“What is that supposed to mean?” Max asked, can’t shaking the feeling that Liz’s anger was aimed at him. He took a step closer to her but Liz instantly took one backwards. For a moment Max just looked at her with hurt and growing confusion before asking softly, “What’s going on Liz?”

“I don’t know what you mean.” Liz replied, desperate to leave. She didn’t want to talk to anyone right now, let alone Max. She just wanted to be left alone and it looked like Max wouldn’t allow her to do that.

“What’s happened to you?” Max asked. He took in her defensive stance, the closed off look in her eyes. He still felt her connection but it was growing fainter with each passing minute as if Liz was once more closing herself out. Abruptly realizing that that was her intent he blurted out, “Don’t! Don’t shut me out again.”

Liz looked at him quietly, her heart shattering with each moment she spent standing here with him. Why was she torturing herself like this? Why was she still here? With each moment it would just get harder for her to push him away…to push him back into Tess’s arms.

“Why?” The words flew from her lips, a whisper before she could stop herself. Having spoken the words, the icy wall she had been trying to erect between her and Max fell away. She wanted to know, she needed to understand. She had to hear it from Max.

“Why what?” Max asked, noticing the emotions in Liz’s eyes. He sucked in his breath when he read the desolation there, the pain.

Liz looked at him with tears swimming in her eyes, blurring her vision. “Why Tess? Why now? Why her?” Liz asked, refusing to let the tears fall.

When Max just continued to look at her in confusion she felt anger rise up in her. Did he think she was a fool that she didn’t know? Did he intend to hide it from her? She wanted to hear it from him when it had happened and why. She wanted to know if the baby was really his.

“The baby, Max!” Liz snapped when Max showed no sigh of answering. “I want to know about the baby. Yours and Tess’s!”

Suddenly it all made sense to Max. Her anger, her bitterness and her pain. He felt relief sweep through him that was quickly quenched when he wondered how Liz knew. But then it didn’t matter really. It seemed like Liz knew a lot more about what had been going on than they themselves had. But he was puzzled, wondering why Liz was angry. There was no baby, didn’t she know that?

Then Ava’s last words struck him and he felt anger at the dupe run through him. She had played Liz till the very end. She had played them all…

Liz doesn’t know! He thought frantically.

“Liz…”He began hesitantly. “There was no baby.”

“Don’t lie to me, Max.” Liz said in an oddly choked voice. “Tell me the truth…please.”

Max took a step towards her, holding out his hand desperately trying to make her see. “I’m not lying. It’s the truth. It was just a mind warp Ava did on all of us.”

Liz looked at him doubtfully, not sure whether to believe him. “But you and Tess…” She trailed off, not really sure she wanted to know if they had done the deed.

Max understood her hesitation and was quick to object. “No.” He said. “That was a mind warp too.”

Liz felt relief wash through her at his words. She knew she couldn’t have held him at fault since she had been technically dead to them but the relief she had felt at his words was indescribable. This time when Max reached out to touch her she didn’t move away.

“Liz…” he whispered. “You’re the only one I want! You’re the only one I’ve ever wanted! Not Tess…you have to believe me.”

Liz looked up at him and for some reason she did believe him. There was honesty in his eyes and a genuine pain – pain for her. She felt tears prickle the back of her eyes when she realized that he was pained for her, for the lie she had thought of as the truth for so long. She let him cup her cheek and run his fingers through her hair, for a moment letting herself revel in his touch. She watched him in silence as his gaze traveled all over her face and her body, almost as if checking to make sure she was really standing there in front of him.

She felt his hand tighten slightly in her hair when his gaze traveled back to her face, her eyes and then her lips.

“Liz…” he whispered, his voice low and soft, almost reverent.

Liz saw his eyes begin to darken and his head begin to descent slowly.

He’s going to kiss me! She realized with a sudden bout of panic. Her pulse increased, not due to anticipation but due to sheer panic and a hint of fear. She felt unbridled desperation claw at her from the inside. Her eyes went wide with alarm as she stood immobile. A part of her wanted to feel the touch of his lips on hers again but another part – a dominant part – recoiled at the thought.

He was only a breath away. All she had to do was tilt her head a scant inch and their lips would touch. With a burst of panic, she wrenched away from his grasp.

“No!” Her shaky voice objected. She took a step back, away from him. She saw the confusion flare up in Max’s eyes as he looked at her, not understanding what just happened. “No.” She said again, this time more to herself. “I can’t.”

“Liz, if you’re worried about me and Tess…”Max said, shaking his head, dazed and confused by Liz’s reaction. “There is nothing to worry about. She and I are just friends, that’s all.”

“That-that’s not why I can’t, Max.” Liz replied, averting her gaze from his searching look. She wrapped her arms around her self, shooting Max a quick look before looking away again.

“Then why the hell not?” Max asked and this time Liz heard the slight exasperation and impatience in it. She bit her lip; sorry that she was doing this to him. She didn’t answer him right away. She wasn’t sure how she could explain it. She wasn’t sure if he’d understand.

Raising her eyes to meet his, she sighed wearily. “Because,” She said. “I don’t want to start this again. Start what we had before…before I left…”

Max’s expression was stunned. “You don’t want to be with me?” he asked, unable to accept that Liz didn’t want to be together again.

“That’s not what I meant…exactly.” Liz told him, biting her lip.

“Then explain to me what you mean, Liz. Because that sure as hell sounded like you want nothing to do with me!” Max bit out. He couldn’t believe that Liz was saying this. The past few months had been torture for him without her. Could it be that she really hadn’t missed him? Ached for what they had? It wasn’t possible. He knew her and he knew she loved him almost as much as he loved her.

“Max, before all of this…we didn’t really have much of a relationship—” Liz began but was cut off.

“That’s not true.” Max argued.

“Isn’t it?” Liz countered quietly.

“I loved you!” Max replied. “Still do.”

“That’s not enough, Max. And it never will be.” Liz argued. She shook her head, determined not to back down even if this was killing her. “There was always something that got in between us! And every time it had one of us stepping back, trying to find some sort of balance.” Tears once more formed in her eyes as she said, “And each time I was forced to put my feelings and my dreams behind me, I lost a part of myself! And all this time… all this time that I’ve been forced to live in secret…it’s only made me more confused and lost.” Her voice turned bitter and the tears shone with anger. “One more alien related problem…”

Max just listened to her, unable to believe that this was what she felt. He knew they had had problems before but he never knew the extent to which she resented all that she had had to do.

“Liz, I’m sorry…. I never meant for those things to happen.” Max told her. “If anything I just wanted things to be normal.”

“I know that, Max.” Liz answered, her voice once more tired. “But that doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t change the fact that I’ve changed. I’ve changed a lot…I’m not who I used to be anymore.”

“You’re still the same, Liz. You just don’t know it.” Max argued.

Liz shook her head. “No, I’m not. I’m very different from the Liz Parker you knew before she got shot.” She shrugged a little. “That’s why it would be unfair to start off from where we left off…” A strange smile flitted across her face as she said, “Considering just exactly where we had left off, I don’t know where we stand really anyway.”

“We just had a little fight.” Max replied, a bit uneasily and embarrassed as he recalled the fight they had. “We’ll work through it.”

“Max, listen to me!” Liz said in exasperation now. “I need time, okay? I need time and space to figure out who I am and where I stand.”

“With me?” Max asked.

“Not just you, but I need to find myself again.” Liz replied. “I – I feel as if I don’t know who I am anymore. The things I have done this past year…would I have done them before the shooting? Before I knew you?”

“Yes,” Max answered for her but when that only made her look at him doubtfully he went on. “People change, Liz. Events change them.”

“But they don’t make them loose their sense of identity.” Liz argued, her voice loud. She was angry at him now. She wanted him to understand, to see why she needed to step back from him for a while. Even though she had been away from him for these couple of months, it wasn’t the same. She needed to step back now that she could be around him without having to hide, without having to shut off her emotions and reactions to him. “I don’t even know who I am anymore, Max!” Liz cried. “I seem to have lost myself in this…this big chasm that I can’t escape from.” She looked searchingly into Max’s face, her eyes begging him to tell her who she really is, who she has now become. “Who am I, Max? Who?”

Max met her gaze and she saw a certainty in his eyes. “You’re Liz Parker. Liz Parker.” He repeated. “That’s who you’ve always been. You’re the little girl I fell in love with in third grade, you’re the Liz Parker whose life I saved a year ago! You’re Liz Parker, the love of my life, my soul mate.”

“No, I am not!” Liz cried. “At least not anymore. I may have been her at one point Max but the real Liz Parker started to die from that day in the Crash down. Each day a little part of me – of her – died. Each time you mentioned your destiny, she died a little, each time you looked at Tess with growing recognition and acceptance, she died a little bit more. She’s gone, Max. Don’t you see? She’s gone. She left the day she started to lie to the one person she loved with all her heart. She died when she stopped believing that she could ever be together with her love.”

“She’s still here, Liz!” Max argued, desperate to make her see how he still saw her. “She’s still inside of you. She’s not dead, not lost. You’re still her. You’re still that Liz Parker. And I still love you! We’ve always had a chance. There has never been anything between me and Tess. Or anyone else. You’re all that I wanted, you’re all that mattered to me. You, Liz, you!”

“Can you honestly say that Max?” Liz challenged, her voice choked. “Can you look me in the eyes and say that I’m still the one you love? That I’m still the girl you fell in love with?”

“Yes.” Max replied firmly.

Liz shook her head sorrowfully. “You’re wrong. You can’t be because I’m not her anymore. I’m not the girl who used to dream of a better life, of life outside Roswell. I’m not that girl who had fantasies of going to Harvard.” She looked down at her feet before meeting Max’s stunned eyes. “I’m a girl who has given up her life and heart to someone she can never be with. Someone who has a whole other destiny that can never include her. Someone who’s not only got the weight of the future of one world but two. I’m a girl who has lied, has been lied to time and again. I’m someone who has watched her life fall apart not once but twice. This girl is not Liz Parker. Maybe I’m Caitlin Hurst, maybe I’m Lisa Davis. Who knows? But I am definitely not Liz Parker, Max… at least not anymore.”

She waited a brief second to see Max’s response, waited to see what he could possibly say to counter her but then she saw the look in his eyes. He was standing in disbelief, stunned to the core by her bitter tirade. He couldn’t say anything to make her think differently; she knew it, so did he. He could just look at her with pain, sorrow and desperation but couldn’t say anything for the fear of driving her even further away than she already suddenly was. Liz gave him one last look and then slowly backed away. Her eyes were still locked on his as she moved steadily backwards and then she dropped her gaze, turned and left him standing there alone.

TBC...

Author's Note: I know a lot of you were dissapointed that Liz went off without knowing the truth about the baby but as I had mentioned earlier, I was forced to cut the previous part short since it was taking me so long to write it. Unfortunately this was the part that I had to cut out and make into a new part since it was unfinished.
I also know a lot of you will be very eager to kill me after you've read this update  All I can say in my defense is that Liz is essentially not the same person she once was and therefore to pick up where she and max left out would be just wrong. Though I can promise that there will be a dreamer reunion by the end and I - nor anyone else - have not forgotten about Kivar, Rath and Lonnie! :)

Shadows -- Part 93

Part 93

Once Max had gone after Liz, the people still remaining in the alley stared uncomfortably at each other. More than one person was shooting Serena distrustful looks but that didn’t deter Serena from trying to figure out what to do next.

Stepping forward, easily ignoring Michael’s scrutinizing look, she motioned towards Ava’s body. “What do you want to do with her?” Serena asked.

“Is she dead?” Kyle asked.

Serena nodded. “Can’t say I’m sorry; though I would have liked to ask her some questions.”

“I could say the same for you.” Michael muttered but Maria put a hand on his arm, stopping him from saying anything further.

“We can’t leave her lying like this.” Serena replied. “Someone is bound to find her, most probably Kivar’s people or Rath and Lonnie.”

“I’m not feeling too generous about a burial.” Isabel replied, staring with anger at Ava’s prone body.

“There’s only one thing to do.” Michael replied. He turned to look at Tess and Isabel and a silent communication seemed to pass between them. Nodding, both girls walked to where Michael was standing, a few feet away from Ava.

Michael raised an eyebrow, slightly concerned when he felt both of them take in a shaky breath. “You guys sure you up to it?” he asked them.

“Yes.” Tess replied determinedly. “We are.”

Isabel nodded too before she raised her hand, pointing it towards Ava. When Michael and Ava followed suit, she gave them a terse nod. “Let’s get it over with.” She said.

Then, with those words, all three aliens aimed their energies at Ava’s body, slowly but efficiently incinerating it. There was no heat; no bright flash of light but within seconds all that remained of Ava was dust and ashes.

Michael was the first to turn away. Without giving a backward glance at what he had just done, he walked over to Maria who, along with Serena, Alex and Kyle had been watching it all uneasily. Tess, too after giving the dust a long look turned away and Kyle was quick to be at her side, holding her gently by the shoulders.

Isabel was the only one who continued to stare at the spot, unable to tear her eyes away from what she had just done. She felt a sick feeling twist at her stomach and she shuddered.

“No body, no evidence…no danger.” She whispered as much to herself as to the others. Alex, who had been watching her reaction gently pulled her away and out the alley, followed by the others.

Once outside, all of them stood for a moment in silence which was eventually broken by Michael.

“Who are you?” He asked, looking pointedly at Serena.

Serena smiled slightly, amused that it had taken that long for him to ask in the first place. “Serena.”

“Serena…?” Michael prodded, indicating he wanted her last name.

Serena shrugged. “It doesn’t matter what my last name is.”

“I’ll be the judge of that.” Michael replied shortly. “Serena what?”

Sighing, not as much out of exasperation as out of resignation, she replied, “Serena Walker.”

“And you’re an alien.” Isabel stated, rather than asking, remembering the show of powers from this girl.

Serena hesitated a little, contemplating the answer before nodding slowly. “In a way, I guess I am.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Michael demanded. “Either you are or you aren’t.”

“Look, let’s not do this here.” Alex jumped in, shooting Michael a warning glare. “Let’s go some place where we can sit and talk without being overheard.”

“I don’t trust her.” Michael said irritably.

Serena arched her brow at him, smiling sweetly. “Good. Because if you did then I’d wonder if this was really you or not.”

Maria muffled her laugh at that everyone relaxed a little. Everyone except Michael, that is. He was still looking rather distrustfully at Serena, wondering what part she played in all of this.

“How about if we go to Michael’s apartment?” Kyle suggested. “I doubt if anyone would disturb us there.”

Michael shot Kyle a look as if to say ‘gee, thanks a lot’. Kyle just shrugged saying, “If we have to go somewhere, I’d rather it was on our grounds.”

Reluctantly admitting that it made sense Michael waited for Serena to agree. It was Alex, instead, who replied.

“Fine.” He looked over at the jeep and then at the number of people. “Where we are staying isn’t too far from here. Serena and I’ll go get our car. You guys can head over to Michael’s in the jeep.”

“No!” Both Isabel and Michael burst out.

“I’m not letting you out of my sight, Alex.” Isabel argued, giving him a fierce look as if challenging him to try.

“And I’m not letting her out of mine.” Michael replied, nodding at Serena.

“How about if Isabel goes with Alex and Serena can ride with us?” Tess suggested.

“It’s actually a relief to know you haven’t changed much.” Serena said to Michael as she calmly walked past him and sat down in the front seat. Smiling at the baffled and wary expression on his face, she called out, “I’m calling shot gun.”

* * * * * * * * * * *

The ride back to Michael’s place was uneasy. The silence continued to stretch even as Michael led Maria, Tess, Kyle and Serena into the apartment. Kyle helped Tess down on the sofa as Maria helped her get comfortable. Max hadn’t got the chance to heal her yet so she was bravely trying not to wince with each movement. Serena watched Kyle give her a soft kiss before going to get something to make a make-shift sling for her.

“I’m afraid I don’t have Max’s power otherwise I would have gladly taken care of this for you.” Serena replied.

Tess looked up at her, assessing the sincerity she heard before nodding slowly. “I know.” She answered softly.

Unsure at what to do next and a little uncomfortable at the way everyone was looking at her, she crossed the room and slid down onto the chair. More than one person was watching her, watching the ease and familiarity she had with them and the apartment in general. She made them feel as if they should know her, that maybe she really was on their side after all. She had kept Alex and Liz safe all this time, hadn’t she? But they couldn’t forget the fact that she had kept Alex and Liz away from them also. None of them were sure what her motives were.

“Max doesn’t know we’re here.” Maria spoke up quietly as she came back out from the kitchen.

“He’ll find us here.” Serena replied before any one else could. “This is the first place he’ll look when he finds us all gone.”

Michael stared at her with suspicion clouding his features. “You seem to know a lot about us all.” He stated with narrowed eyes.

“I do.” Serena answered simply. “You might be surprised by how well I know you.”

“How—” Michael began but Serena cut him off with a shake of her head.

“I’ll tell you all you want to know soon.” She promised.

Michael started towards her, menacing. “Give me one good reason why I should trust anything that you have to tell us. For all we know, you really could be working for Kivar, just waiting to lead us all into his waiting palm.”

“Because,” Tess spoke up in Serena’s defense, much to both her own and everyone else’s surprise. “She saved Liz and Alex…and, in a way, maybe even me. If she wanted us dead, or captured then she had more than one opportunity to do so. Not only in alley but also before – when we had no idea about her.”

Michael glared at Serena briefly before turning to look at Tess, glowering. “I hope your theory is right.”

“So do I.” Tess replied in a wry tone. She looked over at Serena who was looking surprised and more than a little grateful. Tess gave her a look, reminding her that Serena still had a lot to explain.

Further conversation was stalled for the moment by the arrival of Isabel and Alex. As soon as they entered Alex looked around and fixed Michael with a mock glare.

“You’ve been interrogating Serena, haven’t you?” he asked. When Michael only rolled his eyes, Alex smiled a little. “You didn’t have to.”

“I wanted to.” Michael retorted. “There are still things I’m very curious to know.”

Alex nodded. “I’m sure you are.” Then he frowned a bit. “Liz and Max aren’t here yet.”

“They must be making up.” Kyle replied with a smirk.

But when Max walked in moments later, looking defeated and alone, the smirk vanished. “Where’s Liz?” he asked, as anxious to see her as anyone else.

“She’s not coming.” Max replied in a flat tone.

“Oh no.” Serena whispered quietly, closing her eyes in resignation before opening them and meeting Alex’s upset ones.

“What do you mean she isn’t coming?” Maria asked, her voice wavering. “I haven’t seen her in months; we all thought she was dead…. She doesn’t want to meet me or talk to me?”

“She’s…upset.” Max replied apologetically, lowering his eyes so as to not let anyone see his pain. “She said she needed space.”

“Space.” Maria scoffed, hurt and tears filling her eyes. “Right…”

“Oh, Maria!” Alex said softly, gathering her into his arms. “Liz is just very confused right now. Give her time.”

Maria laid her head on his shoulders, letting the tears slip down her face. “She says she needs space…” She murmured. “I just – I just want to see her, talk to her…”

“I know.” Alex answered.

Maria raised her eyes to look at Max, who was standing silently, avoiding everyone’s eyes. It occurred to her that Liz might have pushed Max away as well. She was pretty sure Liz had because Max looked so lost at the moment. And knowing how much he had suffered when they all had though Liz was dead; Maria felt a spurt of anger at the cold way Liz had been able to push him away. She didn’t understand Liz’s motives or what she was going through but it made her slightly angry nonetheless.

Max, who had been avoiding everyone’s eyes till now suddenly looked up, as if something just occurred to him. “Ava?” he asked.

“Dead.” Michael replied in a flat tone.

“And the body?” Max asked. “You didn’t leave it there did you?”

“Well, we sure as hell didn’t give her a funeral.” Michael snapped, unnecessarily angry.

Isabel’s eyes flickered briefly over her brother before she said, “We took care of it.”

Something in his sister’s tone and eyes told Max to drop the subject. Isabel had been quiet up till now, just watching and listening. Even though she had accompanied Alex as he had gone to bring his car, she hadn’t been able to talk to him. It had seemed more appropriate to just sit there and take in the moment, to try and wrap her thoughts around the fact that Alex was alive and sitting next to him. They needed to talk but not here, not now.

“Max, could you take care of this?” Kyle spoke up breaking the sudden silence that had fallen in the room.

Max turned to where Kyle was and Kyle pointed towards Tess. Max instantly understood what Kyle was asking of him and he wondered why he hadn’t done it the second he had found her. Max came to crouch down in front of Tess, his hands already going to the deepest cut.

“Sorry, I didn’t do this earlier.” Max said as he carefully healed her wounds.

“It’s okay.” She replied, watching as the blood and gashes disappeared. When he was done, she gave Max a smile. “Thanks.”

Max returned her smile and got back up.

“Max…” Max stopped at the sound of Tess’s hesitant voice. Tess tugged at the hem of her jacket, slightly uncomfortable. “I’m sorry.” She finally said quietly.

Max looked at her in surprise for a moment, seeing the sympathy and apology on her face and in her eyes. He knew she was referring to Liz. He didn’t bother to question how she knew about what had transpired between him and Liz but rather he let himself be enveloped in her quick, yet comforting hug.

“Thanks, Tess.” He replied when she let go.

“You know I’m here if you need to talk, right?” she asked.

Max smiled reassuringly. “I know.” He then turned to look at everyone and asked, “So, what do we do now?”

“We look for answers.” Maria replied, automatically turning towards Serena.

“Look,” Serena said with a sigh. “You all can stop looking at me like I’m some sort of spy. I’m not. I’m not about to cause any more trouble than there already is.”

“Then why are you here?” Michael asked, his arms crossed to make him seem intimidating.

Serena just smiled, almost wistfully. “I’m here to help.”

“With what?” Max demanded. “In keeping Liz and Alex away from us? From leading Kivar right to us?”

“I didn’t lead Kivar to you!” Serena shot back, angered by his accusation. “In fact if it wasn’t for me you’d have all been lead blindly right into his hands, and you know it!”

“Then who did?” Max asked, taking out his frustrations at her. “If not you then who?”

“Have you ever considered that maybe no one did?” Serena asked. “That maybe once Tess came to Roswell and completed the Four Square, you gave of a signal to every alien out there?”

“Are you saying that we have ourselves to blame for this?” Michael asked.

“No, what I’m saying is that no one is at fault! Maybe this was the way it was meant to be! Maybe none of you were meant to have any control over this!” Serena cried.

“Why are you here?” Isabel asked. “And who are you anyway?”

“I told you,” Serena answered. “I’m Serena, an alien like you and I’m here to help. I’m supposed to protect you, guide you so you don’t make the same mistakes you’ve made before.”

“Before?” Max asked.

Serena turned to meet his gaze before saying, “Before this timeline, in a previous one. I was sent to make sure the mistakes you made then are avoided now.”

That earned startled looks from everyone in the room. “Wait, back up!” Kyle spoke, holding up his hands. “Are you saying that you’re not even from this timeline, let alone planet?”

Serena shook her head. “I am a part of this timeline too, or at least I am now. I was sent from the future – a future that had to be changed.”

Suddenly Maria’s head snapped up to fix Serena with a penetrating look. “Wait a minute…Serena…from the future?” she asked. “Do you mean to tell me that you’re the same Serena that future Max mentioned when he came to Liz?”

Serena smiled. “You catch on fast. Yes, I’m that Serena only from an altered timeline, a timeline that Liz did end up changing after her visit from Max.”

“If Liz managed to change the timeline then why are you here?” Tess asked.

“Because when you mess with time something always goes wrong.” Serena replied with a sudden grimness to her words. “Always.”

“What happened?” Isabel asked, feeling a sense of foreboding and she clutched at Alex.

“Something that almost happened today. Ava, with Kivar’s help, managed to bring you down.” Serena told them. “She killed Alex by mind warping him. Alex’s death sent Liz into a spiral, one that she wasn’t able to break out from. Max and she fought and drifted apart, Isabel also began to pull away after Alex’s death. Ava used all of this to finally get to you all. One by one Kivar killed you all.” She looked at everyone in the room. “I’m here to make sure that doesn’t happen again. That’s why the first thing I did was to save Alex.”

“But haven’t you changed the timeline too?” Maria asked. “How can you be sure that something won’t go wrong this time?”

“Because it already has. I did my best to take care of it.” Serena replied.

“What went wrong?” Max asked.

“I was able to save Alex but he was too weak for me to be able to bring him back to Roswell.” Serena told them. “So I went looking for Liz and found her about to leave for Sweden. I managed to stop her, to bring her to Alex with me but in the process her plane went down and even she was presumed dead.”

“Why not approach us?” Michael asked. “Why hide?”

“I could have brought them back.” Serena admitted. “But then I decided that I might as well use this to my advantage and try to flush out who was working for Kivar. I hoped that if Liz and Alex weren’t around the spy would be bold enough to come out in the open. And she did.”

“Didn’t you know already that Ava was working with Kivar?” Tess asked. “From your own time?”

Serena shook her head. “No. In my time she never showed herself. We always thought it was one of the dupes but we were never sure who. It was only in this timeline that Ava actually came to Roswell, probably content in the belief that Liz – her only real threat – was no longer alive.”

“How come you’re an alien?” Max asked. “Are you like us?”

“Almost though not exactly.” Serena replied. “I was actually sent from Antar when Kivar attacked Earth. I was sent as a guardian, protector and adviser to you. But first, in order to come here, my genes had to be altered. In a way I was reborn when I came to Earth. I have human and alien DNA mixed in me. It’s the only way I could have survived and fitted in here.”

Michael ran a hand through his hair as he contemplated all of this. “Who’s to say you’re not lying?” He asked, refusing to believe it. “Who’s to say you aren’t feeding us some story?”

“Because Liz and I both have seen part of the future.” Alex spoke up, for the first time telling the story. “In case you haven’t noticed or realized this, Liz and I both have developed certain…gifts. Mine isn’t so much physical as it is emotional. I can feel your emotions and thoughts if I let myself. Liz, on the other hand, has visions. We saw this future Serena is talking about and I can tell you that it wasn’t pretty.”

“Liz has visions?” Maria asked with shock.

“Premonitions.” He corrected.

“And you have powers too?” Isabel asked faintly.

Alex gave her a reassuring smile. “Maybe not powers exactly but remnants of the effects of the healing stones that Serena used on me.”

“So it looks like you and I are only ones who haven’t turned into some freaky alien side show…yet.” Kyle said to Maria in a slightly amused tone.

That earned smiles from the people in the room. The tension seemed to ease once more as everyone allowed what they had been told to sink in. All of what Serena had told them, when compared to all that had already transpired, didn’t seem so strange anymore. In fact it seemed almost as if it was expected.

“The battle’s not over yet.” Alex observed.

“No, it isn’t.” Serena agreed. “Kivar is still lying in wait.”

“Is he here?” Max asked. “In Roswell?”

“Possibly.” Serena said with a shrug. “Truth is, I don’t know for sure. What I do know is he is here, in person and that just makes him more dangerous, more powerful.”

“How do you expect us to defeat him then?” Isabel asked. “If he’s so powerful how can we go up against power like that?”

This time Serena smiled. “Just because he’s powerful doesn’t mean he’s invincible.”

“We don’t even know where he is.” Michael pointed out.

“True.” Serena acknowledged. “But we can always find out.”

“How?” Michael asked immediately, always ready to fight.

“It might be dangerous.” Serena replied, a little hesitant.

“We can handle it.” Tess broke in, her voice determined.

Serena hesitated, wondering if they were able and ready. Then she nodded, more to herself than them. “We need to be able to draw him out.” She told them. “I doubt he’s stupid enough to have his base in Roswell but it has to be near by, maybe just outside city limits. We know for a fact that he’s been using not only Ava but Rath and Lonnie as well. If we can get to those two, then we can find our way to Kivar.”

“And just how do you intend to find Rath and Lonnie?” Kyle asked.

“I think I know where their and Ava’s meeting place is.” Serena told him with a smile. “I’ve been scouting out Roswell for a while now and I think I know where this place might be.”

“Even if we find it, how do we get Lonnie and Rath to co-operate?” Max asked with a frown. “They aren’t exactly on our side.”

“But they’ll listen to Ava.” Tess said, an odd looking crossing her feature.

“Ava’s dead.” Maria reminded.

Tess stood up and walked to Serena, looking her in the eye. “I’ll take her place.”

“What?” Kyle shot to his feet along with Max. “No, Tess! Don’t even think about it.”

Tess shot Kyle a determined look. “Kyle, it’s the only way.” She replied calmly. And she knew it was. She could do this, she had to do this.

“Tess, what you’re suggesting is beyond dangerous.” Max argued. “What if you can’t pull it off? What if Kivar knows something is off? Then what?”

“Nothing like that is going to happen.” Tess replied. “I can do this, Max.”

“We can’t let you.” Isabel argued, afraid for Tess.

Tess smiled softly. “You have to.” She said. “It’s the only way.”

“No!” Kyle protested. “We’ll think of something else. There has to be more than one way to tackle this.”

Tess sighed a little, though touched by his concern. She went to him and touched his cheek lightly, soothingly. “Kyle…” She began in a soft voice, her eyes begging him to understand and support her. “This is my fight too. Kivar has used me and unless I do this, I’m not going to be satisfied. Consider it my payback.”

Kyle took her fingers in his hand, squeezing them lightly. “We can do this some other way.”

“But none will be as efficient as this.” Tess pointed out. “Think about it.” She turned to regard everyone. “Kivar wouldn’t expect Ava to lead him into a trap. He trusts her; that we can safely assume. It won’t take me long to bring him to where you all will be waiting.”

“As much as I hate to admit this,” Alex said. “Tess is right. This is the best way. The only way we can insure that Kivar comes to us on our terms. If we are to face him, it should be on our grounds.”

“I don’t like this.” Max said, running his hand through his hair.

“Noted.” Tess replied. She turned to Serena once more. “We need Liz in this too. If we’re going up against Kivar, we need all the help we can get.”

“She’ll come.” Serena assured her. She looked briefly at Alex, their eyes meeting for a moment and a silent communication passed between them. They had no doubt that Liz would come, but some one was going to have to talk to Liz nonetheless. It wasn’t going to be easy to break the wall she had erected around herself.

“If we’re going to do this, we’d better do this fast.” Michael spoke up. “Serena, show me the meeting place. We’ll try to figure out where to lure Kivar too.”

“The best place would be near the pod chamber.” Max said.

“But – but won’t that be dangerous?” Maria asked.

“Kivar can’t open the chamber without us. If anything does go wrong, we can take refuge in the pod chamber. We should be safe there.” Max told her.

“Okay, Serena once you’ve shown us where you think the meeting place is, we’ll check it out and wait.” Tess spoke up, taking charge. “Once Rath and Lonnie arrive, you along with the others head out to the pod chamber. Once there, secure the area.”

“I can mind warp to make sure Kivar sees the granolith.” Serena replied.

Tess nodded. “Perfect. That should make things easier.”

“I’ll go and get Liz.” Alex put in.

“I’ll go with you.” Maria spoke up.

Alex glanced at her, slightly surprised but then nodded in agreement. He looked over at Isabel and saw her hesitation at being separated from him. She knew she had to go with Max and the others to the pod chamber but she hated to leave Alex. Alex gave her a soft kiss.

“I’ll join you soon enough.” He told her.

She nodded. “All right.” She agreed, still she held on to him just a moment longer before letting go.

Alex picked up the car keys. “We’ll head out. It’ll take a while to get Liz. We’ll meet you at the pod chamber.” He replied as he and Maria began to head out.

“We’ll head out to the pod chamber; see if we can close of the area to avoid an attack from the back.” Max replied.

“We might have to wait a while before Rath and Lonnie show up.” Serena replied. “We should go now though.”

Kyle went to Tess, wrapping his arms around her briefly. “Be careful.” He whispered to her before giving her a quick kiss.

Tess let herself be over taken by her emotions before she stepped back reluctantly. “You too.” She told him. Then she turned to Serena. “Let’s go.”

Kyle watched her go with a tremor of worry. He just hoped everything worked out as they had hoped.

Shadows -- Part 94

Post by FallenMagic »

Author's Note: Hey all! :D I'm finally done with my new part! Yay! Thanks for all the bumps and the well wishes. :D Sorry it took so long but I'm here! This is fairly short but not too short
As for the new story, well it's still too early to say anything yet but I might not be posting it for a while, atleast not until I've got several parts down.
I'll let you know the second I post it up :D

Part 94

Liz moved slowly inside the dark apartment, trailing her hand over the back of the sofa. She paused and turned, taking the place in. She was alone here for the moment. Serena and Alex were still not back and for that she was glad. She really didn’t want to see anyone right now. On any other occasion the dark and loneliness of the place would have made her feel restless but right now she welcomed the dark and the safety it brought with it. She wanted to let it envelope her, taking her into its comforting arms and let her weep and remember.

She could still see the pain flashing in Max’s eyes as she walked away, she could still feel his presence humming in her body. She didn’t know she could hurt this badly, didn’t know that in hurting him and pushing him she had only ended up hurting herself.

But what could she have done? She knew that if she had allowed herself to fall back into his arms, to let the desire to kiss him take control over her then she would have never been able to pull herself out of the chasm. She would never have been able to find herself again. And she couldn’t allow that to happen. She couldn’t allow herself to be submerged once more in murky waters. She wanted control over her life and if that meant being away from Max, even for a while, then she would do so.

Stifling a shaky sob, she slid to the floor, resting her back against the sofa. Leaning her head back, she closed her eyes tightly constantly seeing pieces of her meeting with Max, hearing snatches of conversation flow between them. One part kept repeating itself relentlessly in her mind. Try as she might she couldn’t stop hearing it.

“…We’ve always had a chance. There has never been anything between me and Tess. Or anyone else. You’re all that I wanted; you’re all that mattered to me. You, Liz, you!”

She remembered the sincerity in his voice; saw the passion and longing flashing in his eyes as he said those words. How could she have walked away after that? How could she have left him after such words?

Silent tears trickled down her face as she brought her knees up and folded her hands on top of them, placing her head on them next. She pulled her legs as close to her as she could, wanting to hide away into the shadows. She didn’t want to feel, didn’t want to hurt, didn’t want to remember. She just wanted peace. And for a few moments she found peace, she found it in her tears and in her silent sobs.

And that’s how Alex and Maria found her; with her head on her knees, her shoulders shaking in silent sobs. Liz didn’t even glance up to look at them when she felt their presence in the apartment. She instead further pushed herself back against the sofa, valiantly trying to pass notice. But they saw her; they heard her sobs and felt their hearts constrict in pain for her.

Maria’s anger flew out of her as she saw her best friend.

“Oh, Lizzie.”

The words flew out of her mouth, a soft gasp, her voice full of pain and tenderness as she fell to her knees and reached out hesitantly to touch Liz on the shoulder. She wasn’t sure if Liz wanted to be touched, if she wanted to be held. Even though Maria was dying to gather Liz in her arms, she refrained from doing so, waiting to see Liz’s reaction.

Upon Maria’s gentle touch, Liz turned her tear stained face to the side, wiping her eyes before she got up slowly, avoiding Maria’s touch. She saw the hurt flare in her friend’s eyes and Liz bit her lip in guilt over causing her more pain.

“Liz, are you okay?” Alex asked in a gentle voice.

“No, I’m not…” She whispered to herself, turning away and walking towards the kitchen. She heard Maria and Alex follow her but she ignored their presence, not willing to deal with them at the moment.

She went to the sink and opened the water faucet to wash her face; instead she let the water fill the sink. She watched the water swirl and rush, like her thoughts and emotions. She dipped her hand into the cold water, for a moment threading her fingers through it before abruptly pulling out the plug. The water gushed down the drain, causing a tiny whirlpool. She watched it in fascination, wondering why pulling the plug to let her emotions and thoughts escape wasn’t just as easy or simple.

She knew Alex and Maria were still there behind her, watching her, worrying about her. They didn’t need to worry. She was fine, she was always fine.

“Liz…” Maria’s voice came out hesitant and worried.

“I’m fine.” She said sharply, without turning around, cutting of whatever Maria was going to say.

“You’re not fine.” She insisted quietly.

Turning around abruptly to face her friends, she glared defiantly at them. “Yes, I am!” she replied. “I have to be…”

Maria took a step towards Liz, the worry clouding her eyes and apparent in her voice. Liz was in need of a shoulder to cry on, for someone to tell her it was going to be okay, she was going to be okay.

“Liz, you’re hands are shaking…” Maria observed quietly as she took yet another cautious step towards Liz.

Liz stared at her hands and with a start realized that Maria was right. Balling her fists, she crossed her arms defiantly. Maria silently stepped up to her, her eyes locked onto Liz’s showing her support. Hesitating for a second, allowing Liz time to pull away, Maria reached out and gently unfolded Liz’s hands, taking them in her own.

“You don’t have to be so strong all the time, Liz.” Maria said softly, her eyes still holding Liz’s tear filled ones. “You’ve always tried to take all the responsibilities on your own shoulders. Maybe…maybe it’s time you learn to share it, to ask for help.”

“I don’t know how…” Liz’s voice trembled as the tears threatened to slip past her eyes. She would have wiped them away but Maria held both of her hands in her own and Liz didn’t want to move them. She just wanted to stand here like this, feeling secure and hopeful after a long time.

“You don’t have to know.” Alex replied, coming to stand next to her and Maria. “All you have to do is reach out and we’ll be there.”

“We’re stronger together, remember?” Maria said, smiling softly.

What Liz did next surprised all three of them, Liz most of all, but it pleased them nonetheless. Without further thought Liz wrapped her arms around Maria, pulling her close for a hug.

“I’ve missed you so much, Maria!” She cried, a sob slipping past her lips.

Maria reacted immediately, pulling Liz close to her to return the hug. “I’ve missed you too.” She replied, tears clogging the back of her throat.

“Is this a private moment or can anyone join in?” Alex’s teasing voice broke through the tension, earning him laugh from both girls.

Liz and Maria both opened their arms and pulled Alex into a three way hug. “I’ve missed you guys.” Maria told them softly. “You have no idea.”

“Believe me, we do.” Alex replied. He hugged both girls close to him, feeling relief wash through him to know that they were together and they were all going to be okay.

Wiping her eyes, Maria let go and smiled at her two best friends. “You guys tried to tell me to follow the clues, didn’t you?” she asked. “I knew I had heard Alex once or twice but I just pushed that away as my imagination.”

“It was me.” Alex confirmed. “Serena and Liz helped me dream walk you. We weren’t sure if it worked.”

“It did.” Maria told him. “It worked well.” Then, carefully choosing her words, Maria said, “Liz, why did you push Max away?”

Abruptly the smile from her face vanished and she drew herself away from Maria and Alex. Turning around, she wrapped her arms around her waist as she felt pain and guilt shoot through her at Maria’s words.

“He’s been through so much without you.” Maria continued quietly, sensing Liz’s grief. “I know because I was there. I found him once, asleep on your balcony because he wanted to be close to you. He put a dozen white roses on your grave every time. And if you’re wondering about Tess and the baby, then that isn’t true. It was a mind warp. Ava’s mind warp. He’s only loved you…”

Unknown to Liz, tears were now trickling down her face as she listened to Maria. She knew what Maria was saying was true. She had no doubt how much he had missed her, grieved for her. In moments when her resolves had crumbled she had allowed herself to reach out for him. And even though she had felt him changing, she had always felt his grief and love come through to her.

“I know…” Liz said quietly.

“Then how could you have pushed him away like that?” Maria asked, confused. “How could it have been so easy for you? I know you love him!”

Liz turned around to face her, the tears now replaced by anger. Liz just wasn’t certain whether the anger was directed at Maria, Max or her own self.

“You think it was easy for me?” She demanded. “You think it was a snap for me to walk away from Max today? To hurt him like that?” She stared in accusation at her friend. “You know me better than that, Maria. I still love him. God, you don’t know how much. It tore my heart to do what I had to do today. So, don’t you dare tell me that it was easy!”

“But then why, Liz?” Maria cried. “Help me understand why?”

“Do you know the last thing Max and I did before I left for Sweden?” Liz asked abruptly. When Maria shook her head, looking confused at the question, Liz replied, “We fought.”

“You fought?” Maria repeated in confusion.

“An all out shouting match.” Liz replied.

“Okay, Liz.” Maria replied. “So you had one little fight. That’s the reason? That’s why you pushed Max away?”

“It wasn’t a little fight, Maria!” Liz told her in exasperation. “It was more than that. It was a matter of trust, of belief! Before all of this happened, Max and I had been drifting apart. We fought, we didn’t trust one another, didn’t think to involve the other in our problems…”

Maria’s face dawned with understanding. “You don’t want to go back to that.”

Biting her lip, Liz nodded. “I really don’t.” She sighed and ran a frustrated hand through her hair. “I love him and I know he loves me but if we truly had a normal relationship, then the things we said to each other that day, the days after Alex’s death…” She trailed off helplessly, unable to put into words what she wanted. Maria saw the frustration in her eyes as Liz glanced at her. “They wouldn’t have been said. We wouldn’t have turned against one another.”

“Liz, there is nothing normal about your relationship with Max.” Maria pointed out with a wry smile. “In fact, there is nothing normal about any one of our relationships with all of them! You knew that from day one.”

“Just because what we have isn’t normal should not mean that there should be no trust between us, or support.” Liz argued. “It doesn’t matter who you’re dating or how different one person is from the other, the core of any relationship is trust…and we didn’t have that.”

Maria fell silent, knowing that maybe Liz was right. Maybe it was the lack of trust that had managed to wedge them apart. But to say that no trust existed wouldn’t be right. There had always been trust but it had riddled with doubt and fear as time went on until Max and the others had been too scared to include them anymore.

“Maybe…maybe you’re right.” Maria conceded with a small shrug. “Maybe you two do need to learn to work together and trust one another, but I don’t think you’re going to have to start from scratch.” She smiled gently at Liz. “You and Max…you guys have a blind faith in one another. So much so that if one of you takes even a tiny misstep it seems like a sin. Maybe that’s what you need to work on. Learning to understand that you can make mistakes and that’s okay. You don’t need to figure out everything alone and at the same time you don’t have to be perfect.

“I need to be away from Max, at least for a while, Maria.” Liz said softly, looking away. “Just till I find my own balance, and figure out what I want to do now that I’m back.”

This time Maria smiled and gave Liz a quick, reassuring hug. “I think I understand.” She told her. “I’m sorry if I sounded harsh or accusing.”

Liz shook her head. “You didn’t.”

Alex, who had till now just watched, now stepped up. “You do know that you can’t avoid him or anyone else, right?”

Liz nodded. “I know.” She sighed. “I guess I’ll have to face him eventually. I just didn’t want to handle it right now. I hoped to buy myself some time.”

“I know you.” Alex stated. “You’ll handle it just fine.”

Liz smiled at him gratefully. “Thanks, Alex.” She replied. “It’s going to be strange to be back for a while.” She pursed her lips in contemplation then. “How are we going to explain this to everyone?” Liz wondered aloud. “How can we possibly explain our coming back into town?”

Maria regarded her carefully. “Are you planning on staying?” she asked.

“I can’t, I won’t, live like this.” Liz replied vehemently.

“Then we’ll figure it out.” Maria replied confidently. “But, right now, we have more important matters to deal with. Namely Kivar.”

Liz’s face hardened at the name. “What about him?” she asked.

“It’s time to bring him down.” Alex replied.

“It can’t be done.” Liz replied with a shake of her head. “He’s strong and the only way to destroy him is with the Four Square, if at all.”

“We have the Four Square. We have it and more. We have love and friendship and trust. Something even Kivar can not beat.” Maria replied.

Liz looked apprehensive and scared for a moment, remembering what Future Max had told her about how Kivar had defeated them before.

But they didn’t have Tess. Liz told herself. We do.

Then, as if just remembering something her head snapped up to look at them. “Tess!” she blurted, her eyes wide as she remembered how badly she had been hurt. “Is she all right?”

“Relax, chica.” Maria soothed. “She’s fine. She was pretty banged up but Max healed her.” An amused and slightly pleased smile crossed her face as she told Liz, “The plan to take down Kivar is Tess’s.”

Surprise filtered across Liz’s face as she asked, “How does she intend to do it?”

Maria and Alex quickly filled Liz in on the basics of the plan, of how Tess would be taking Ava’s place and leading Kivar into their trap. By the time they were done, Liz was nervously working her lip.

“Do you think it’ll work?” she asked.

“Not unless we all work together.” Maria told her. She looked at Liz pleadingly. “Liz, you have to help. We need your powers too. The more the better, right?”

Liz hesitated before she nodded slowly. “Okay, I’m in.” She replied. Her eyes took on a determined edge. “Let’s go take Kivar down.”

Serena, Michael and Tess stood outside the abandoned warehouse, looking up at it with apprehension. The structure was in shambles with the wood having rotted off in places, producing gaping holes. The windows were broken and the door looked like it would fall off at the slightest touch.

How could anyone have even entered this place without having it fall down upon them? Michael wondered. Turning his head, he looked uncertainly at Serena. “You sure this is the place?”

Serena nodded. “This is it.” She confirmed.

She raked her gaze carefully over the place, trying to locate the most secure area. She wasn’t sure where Ava had held her meetings with Rath and Lonnie but Serena was sure that wherever it was in this warehouse, it would be tucked away from sight.

Serena walked closer to the building, running her hand along it as she circled it, carefully judging and evaluating the place. Just as she had almost circled it entirely, she found what she was looking for.

“There.” She said with a pleased smile.

“What?” Tess asked anxiously, now feeling her nerves flutter as the time for her to take center stage grew closer. “Did you find the entrance?”

Serena nodded. “Looks like it.”

The door was hidden well into the wall, a crack barely showing where the door ended and the wall begun. She might have missed it if she hadn’t noticed the window close by. It was the only window that was still intact. In fact, dirty and tattered curtains hung inside, shutting out the view. Serena took that as a sign that there was something to hide in there.

Stepping closer to it, she laid her hand on the door, concentrating her powers onto the lock. She heard a mute click and the door swung open. Once she had it opened, she walked inside, leading Michael and Tess. They all looked around them and knew instantly that this was where Ava did her work.

On a rickety metal shelf on the far corner of the room were several sheaves of paper and boxes. A torn couch lay on the other end and a busted table, which from the looks of it, had been caught in a cross fire.

“Dissention amongst the ranks.” Michael muttered as he moved past it.

“Good for us then.” Tess replied as she surveyed the scene around her and tried to get a feel of the place. Turning her attention to Serena, she addressed her, “Looks like you were right. This is it.”

Serena nodded. “Now all we have to do is wait. I think we might have visitors today.” She answered.

Tess swallowed nervously but nodded, not allowing her fear to show. Nonetheless, Michael came up to her and looked searchingly into her face. “You sure you up to this?” he asked, “Because there is still time to back out. We’ll find some other way.”

But Tess shook her head determinedly. “No, I’m not running scared. I’m nervous but I know I can do this.”

“Even though I don’t like this idea much, I have to admit it is the best plan we have so far.” Michael told her reluctantly.

“Michael, I want you to follow Tess when she goes to Kivar.” Serena said. “And after that I want you to tail her to the pod chamber.”

“Good idea.” Michael begun but Tess but him off with a fierce shake of her head.

“No.” She replied. “Don’t do anything like that. I have to do this by myself.”

“Tess, it’s for your own protection.” Michael replied.

“I can take care of myself.” Tess replied evenly. “Besides, it’d be difficult to explain to Kivar why he’s been followed should he catch sight of the car.”

“I’ll be a safe distance away.” Michael replied.

“Still, I’d prefer it if you didn’t.” Tess looked up at Michael with conviction. “Trust me. I know what I’m doing.”

Michael looked at her for a moment, as if debating with himself. Then he raised his gaze to meet Serena’s, who looked uncertain herself. He ran a hand through his hair before reluctantly nodding.

“Okay. We’ll do it your way.”

Tess smiled, though her eyes showed how nervous she was. “Then you’d better get going before Rath and Lonnie show up.”

Serena and Michael had just started walking back out when Michael suddenly turned around. “Tess,” He waited till she was looking at him before he gave her a worried look. “Be careful, okay? Kyle’ll kill me if anything happens to you.”

That earned a low, amused laugh from Tess. “He doesn’t need to worry.” She replied. Then her gaze turned soft as she appraised him. “And neither do you…”

With a final nod, he and Serena quickly headed back to the car, their next destination being the pod chamber.

* * * * * * * * * * *

Isabel leaned against the hood of Max’s jeep as she watched her brother and Kyle nervously pace the desert. Though she appeared calm, her heart was thumping wildly in her chest, more out of anticipation than out of fear. She wanted to get this over and done with. She wanted to end the wait and to quell the questions and fears that were surfacing as each hour passed and the time to face Kivar grew nearer and nearer.

Max and Kyle were doing nothing to help decrease her restlessness. Watching them pace and mutter to themselves only made her more agitated. Sighing irritably, she dragged her gaze away from them and to the pod chamber above. The granolith was safe there. Kivar didn’t know about its true location and if everything went according to plan he never would.

For the millionth time she wondered how something like the granolith spark off so much trouble. What was it about the granolith that made every alien clamor to be the one to possess it? It hit her that they might never truly know. All she did know was that she and the others had to protect it with their lives. And she intended to do just that.

Letting her eyes fall back down, she saw that Max and Kyle were still pacing restlessly and she was sure she could see a trench where they walked.

“Will you guys please stop that annoying pacing!?” She finally snapped.

Kyle and Max both looked up at her, startled by her outburst. Looking at the irritation flickering on her face they wisely stopped. Max came and propped himself against the jeep like his sister while Kyle pulled himself to sit on the hood.

“How long do you think Alex and Maria will need to convince Liz to come?” Kyle asked as they all looked out towards the road.

Isabel shrugged. “I don’t know.” She admitted. She looked worriedly at the other two. “Do you think she’ll come?”

“She’ll come.” Max replied with conviction. Upon the curious looks he got he stood straight, almost defensively. “I just know, alright?”

He did know. He knew it deep inside of him that she wouldn’t abandon her friends, just as he knew that it had hurt her to walk away from him today. He was a bit nervous about seeing her again after the confrontation they had but he knew that if she intended to stay in Roswell then he couldn’t avoid her forever.

And I don’t intend to. He thought.

“I think someone’s coming!” Kyle cried, breaking Max out of his thoughts.

Both Isabel and Max came around the jeep just as Kyle jumped down from the hood. They shaded their eyes against the glare of the sun as they noticed a small white car zipping towards them.

“I think its Alex and Maria.” Isabel told the others as the car came closer.

“Is Liz with them?” Kyle asked anxiously.

Automatically both of them turned to look at Max, as if expecting him to answer. Slightly amused, Max nodded, feeling Liz faintly. “Yes,” he said happily. “She is.”

The car came to a stop next to the jeep and Alex, Maria and Liz exited. Immediately Alex was engulfed in a hug by Isabel.

“Nice to know I’ve been missed.” Alex laughed.

With her head still tucked into his shoulder, Isabel muttered, “Shut up, Alex.” Pulling away she kissed him before stepping back. “Hi, Liz.”

Liz smiled at her softly, more than happy that Alex seemed to have gotten through to Isabel. “Hey, Isabel.”

“It’s good to see you.” Kyle said, looking a bit nervous.

Liz gave him a reassuring hug much to Max’s irritation. “I’ve missed you.” She said to him quietly. Then she lowered her voice so only he would hear. “I never got to thank you what you did for me that night.” At Kyle’s surprised look she gave him a smile. “And I’m glad you found Tess.”

“So am I.” Kyle told her.

Liz’s eyes met Max’s over Kyle’s shoulder and she felt something tighten in her stomach. He had this look on her face, this protective yet loving look that made her want to throw her arms around him. Instead she gave him a cautious nod.

“Max…”

Max didn’t reply for a moment, just staring intently at Liz. He saw her guard go up immediately when she saw him and that caused him more grief than he had expected. Determined not to let it bother him today, he nodded back in greeting.

“Is everything ready?” Maria asked.

Max tore his gaze away from Liz and nodded. “Everything’s ready.” He replied.

“Aren’t Michael and Serena here yet?” Alex asked.

“I think that’s them coming down the road.” Isabel replied as yet another car came to a screeching halt, inches from where they all stood. Jumping back with a yelp, Isabel rolled her eyes before glaring at Michael as he got out from behind the driver’s seat. “Yep, that’s him.”

“Tess all right?” Kyle asked immediately.

Serena nodded. “She’s ready.” She replied.

“So are we.” Max told her.

“Let’s just hope Tess can pull this off safely, otherwise it’s going to turn messy.” Maria said.

At that proclamation the atmosphere tensed and almost everyone felt a trickle of fear run through them. It was all up to Tess now. All they could do was wait.

Shadows -- Part 95

Post by FallenMagic »

Author's Note: Hey guys! Thanks for all the wonderful feedback. This story is fast coming to an end. Just yesterday I sat down and wrote the outline for the epilogue. *sigh* Kind of makes me sad :( Well, it's still a few parts away so I still have time to give this my all
This part is a but sketchy but it's for all those people who have been wondering about Kivar and dumb and dumber. I don't think I'll ever think of them as Rath and Lonnie again
Now,without much further ado, maye I present...

Part 95

“I can’t believe she dumped this shit on us!” Rath growled as he and Lonnie approached the warehouse where Kivar was at. “And she threw us out of the fuckin’ car!”

“It’s just like her ta send us to face the firin’ squad!” Lonnie added angrily.

Rath stopped abruptly as if something had struck him. His eyes wide with the barest flicker of fear, he asked, “How the hell will we tell Kivar that Ava fucked up?”

Lonnie shifted nervously, her eyes darting to the warehouse then back again to Rath. “It’s Ava’s mess.” She told him, though she sounded uncertain. “Let her take the fall, we sure as hell ain’t takin’ it for her.”

“I ain’t so sure it’s gonna be that easy.” Rath muttered.

“Look, we have nothin’ to do with this shit so Kivar shouldn’t be sayin’ anythin’ to us!” Lonnie replied.

“You think Kivar’s gonna give a damn who’s mess this is?” He countered with a sneer. He shook his head, his gaze resting on the suddenly domineering structure. “He wants only one thing, the granolith. And he don’t care for anythin’ messing it up.”

“If it weren’t for wantin’ to get of this piece of rock, we wouldn’t have ta depend on him.” Lonnie grumbled as she and Rath resumed walking to the warehouse.

“It’ll pay off, Lonnie.” Rath assured her as waved his hand over the door to open it. “All of this will be worth it.”

“It better be.” Lonnie muttered.

She followed Rath as he led the way down a large empty room. Even though the room was conspicuously vacant, they both knew that the guards and soldiers were around, ready to come at Kivar’s call.

The guards placed outside the door to Kivar’s room blocked their way when Rath and Lonnie came. Rath threw them a hard look.

“Tell Kivar that we’s here.” Rath ordered.

The guard hesitated for only a second, assessing both of them before nodding silently and slipping inside. In moment he was back out and ushering them inside. The door closed behind Rath and Lonnie silently but to them the sound reverberated in their head, sounding like a prison door slamming behind them.

Kivar stood in the center of the room, looking down at some object in his hand with a displeased look. He didn’t look up when Rath and Lonnie entered, continuing his perusal of the long crystal object in his hand.

“Greetings, Lord Kivar.” Rath said, sounding nervous and tensed.

Kivar’s gaze didn’t move from the object he was examining as he asked in a serene tone. “Where’s Ava? I thought we had a meeting today.”

Rath shifted nervously from foot to foot, clearing his throat as he pondered on how to tell Kivar what happened. “Well…uh…you see, we’s were on our way here when something…um…came up and…”

Kivar’s gaze shot up to hold his in an icy look. “Are you trying to tell me that she isn’t here?” he asked. Though his voice was calm and smooth, there was a frosty veneer which neither of the dupes mistook.

Swallowing, Rath darted his eyes to look at Lonnie for help. Lonnie stepped forward to explain things as best as she could.

“She’ll be here.” Lonnie told Kivar. “She said she would.”

Kivar placed the crystal he had been examining carefully back down on the table before he walked towards them slowly, languidly. Though he appeared at ease, something in his eyes had both Lonnie and Rath nervous.

“She said she’d be here for this meeting.” Kivar pointed out. “She isn’t.”

“She just had to take care of a few things.” Rath told him. He wasn’t defending Ava, not necessarily anyway. He was just looking out for himself because he knew that when Kivar would find out what had happened he would be furious and most likely look to relieving his anger on the nearest possible person, namely him and Lonnie.

But he had misjudged Kivar in thinking that Kivar wouldn’t know something was up. Kivar was already feeling suspicious as to the reasons of Ava’s tardiness. He had a feeling what whatever was holding Ava up wasn’t something she wanted him to be privy to.

“Where is she?” Kivar asked, his voice taking on a hard-edged tone.

“We don’t know.” Lonnie replied quickly.

“Oh, I think you do.” Kivar countered. “Now either you tell me where she is or I’ll make things very painful for you.” As if to prove his point, he raised his hand towards them and turned it. Almost instantly Lonnie and Rath fell on their knees, grasping their throat as they felt the wind pipe close.

Spots appeared before their eyes as Kivar kept his hold on their throat with his powers. The hold tightened until they felt the air being cut off from their lungs. Their lungs burned for air as they gasped helplessly. Feeling certain that Kivar intended to choke them to death, Rath was very surprised and more than a little relieved when Kivar abruptly relinquished his hold on them.

Gasping and wheezing, Lonnie and Rath struggled to sit up, their eyes blurring, their throats burning.

“Now, are you ready to tell me where Ava is?” Kivar asked smoothly, calmly.

“R-Roswell…” Lonnie gasped out, feeling her throat burn even more as she spoke. Rubbing her hand across her throat, her eyes shone with fear as she looked at Kivar. “Her mind warp broke over Tess and she could feel it breakin’ over the others too. So she went ta fix it before it was too late.”

“It is too late!” Rath muttered.

The cool calm that Kivar eluded abruptly disappeared as rage and disgust formed over his features. “It what?” He hissed. “You mean to tell me that she slipped this close to moment when I was going to make my move?”

“She pushed the girl too far.” Rath told him. “She had tried to do that mind probe thing a coupl’a days back but the plan backfired, an’ she was forced ta mindwarp Tess and the Valenti kid. We warned her that it might be dangerous ta do another mindwarp but she didn’t listen.”

“Why the hell did she attempt it in the first place?” Kivar roared.

“She wanted ta find the granolith.” Lonnie put in.

“We could have found it after we got Max and the others!” Kivar replied, his voice laced with anger. “That was the point in all of this. Luring them to use the granolith! Why the hell was she in a hurry?”

Lonnie shrugged. “You know her…”

Kivar turned around, balling his fists for a moment. Then abruptly he shot out his hand and blew up a chair nearby. He couldn’t believe Ava had done this. She had taken a risky step and one that hadn’t paid off. It was just as he had feared, her getting too confident in her powers. He doubted she would be able to reach Tess before Tess told everyone.

“Well this is going to end now!” Kivar said to himself. “I think it’s time I push up my plan…”

He turned and faced Lonnie and Rath who cringed almost as if waiting for his blow. An amused smirk flitted over his face before he hardened his face again.

“Take me to her.” He ordered.

“What?” Rath asked, for a moment shocked that he hadn’t been blown to bits and even more shocked that Kivar wanted to go to Roswell. “My Lord…Kivar…that might not be a wise idea or safe…”

“I will decide what’s wise or not.” Kivar snapped angrily. “Take me to Roswell, to where you meet. It’s time I handled this matter.” Sneering, he added, “I should learn to stop handing out such tasks to incompetent fools.”

Without waiting for Rath or Lonnie he moved past them and headed out, expecting them to follow. He motioned for a couple of the guards and skins, angry that his plans seemed to have taken a different turn.

But then again he wasn’t defeated yet. As long as he had the element of surprise he still had things working in his favor. He would make sure of that.

Tess smoothed a hand over her short skirt as she glanced at her reflection in a dirty mirror hanging on the wall. In the reflection she could make out the piercing on her face and could see the pink streaks in her hair. Even though it would be easy to change herself back with a quick wave of her hand, she felt repelled by the sight.

This was not who she was. Even seeing her reflection as Ava sent chills down her back as she recalled everything the dupe had done to her, to her friends. No, she wasn’t that person at all, she would never be….

Turning away, she crossed the room and looked out the window once more. She pressed her hand lightly to her stomach, forcing herself not to pay attention to the butterflies in her stomach.

She was nervous, very nervous. Her hands were clammy and more than once horrible scenarios passed through her head in which she would make a mistake and end up ruining everything and letting down everyone. But she wasn’t going to let that happen, she assured herself. She was going to come through for everyone, they were depending on her.

I can handle Rath and Lonnie. She told herself as she waited anxiously for them. I can do this…

But even then her mind was taking her back to when she and Max had gone with them to New York and how easily they had overpowered her. She remembered the pain and helplessness she had felt when they had tried to use their powers on her and the fear she felt when Max had found her and she hadn’t been able to recall anything.

It’s not going to be like that this time. She told herself as she pressed her fingers against her eyes in an effort to block out the images. I’m Ava to them now, not Tess Harding…

But even then she felt her stomach lurch when she heard the sounds of their car stop outside and heard them approach. Swiveling to face the door, she forced a calm look on her face. Carefully she let a guard drop over her eyes, her features unreadable as she saw Lonnie walk in first.

And alone… Tess noticed with a spurt of hope. Maybe it would be easier to adjust to if it was just Lonnie.

Lonnie saw her the moment she stepped in and the surprise of seeing Ava in the warehouse, when she was least expected, registered on her face.

“Ava.” She said, walking over to Tess now. “Didn’t expect ta see you here. We thought you would be gone for a while yet to finish the job.”

Tess gave her a cool smirk and tilted her head arrogantly. “I work fast.” She told Lonnie.

Lonnie stared at her carefully a moment and for a split second Tess panicked, thinking Lonnie knew something was wrong. But then the worry was heedless as Lonnie shrugged and asked, “So, did you do it?”

“What do you think?” Tess asked, her smirk still in place. Inside she was frantically trying to figure out what exactly Lonnie was talking about. The attack Ava had planned for her or something totally different. She tried to draw out the information from Lonnie. “Did you expect me to mess up my job?”

Lonnie hesitated before answering. “The way you freaked out and threw us out of the car I’d have expected that getting control over the mind warps again would be some tough piece of work.”

“What can I say?” Tess asked with a smug look. “I’m just that good!”

Instantly a scowl formed on Lonnie’s lips before she snarled, “You’ve got company…”

“Oh, really?” Tess asked, wondering who it could be. “Rath?”

This time Lonnie laughed, cold and pleased. “When you see who it is, you gonna wish it was just Rath an’ me.”

Tess felt unease begin to churn inside her as her gaze flickered towards the door then back at Lonnie. “Where is this ‘company’ of mine?” She asked.

Almost as if they had been waiting for that cue, the door swung open once more and two figures entered. Tess recognized the first one immediately as Rath but the second man with her had her pausing a bit. She hadn’t seen him before, of that she was sure but the sharp lurch of fear she felt upon seeing him told her that he was someone to be feared.

“Surprised Ava?” The man asked, smiling at her but Tess saw the cold, hard look in his eyes and instantly a name struck her.

Her eyes widened, her breath hitched and she involuntarily took a step back, her hand flying to her throat in shock and undiluted terror.

“Kivar…” She gasped.

Taking her reaction as a sign that she was shocked to see him here, he grinned at her as he came up to her casually. “Did I surprise you, my sweet?” He asked again.

Out of sheer force Tess forced herself to shut off the fear in her and instead just tune in on the surprise. Let him think what he wants. She thought.

So, Tess nodded, although a bit weakly. “Y-yes…” She said, finding it difficult to speak. “You did.”

“Good…” Kivar replied, pleased. He rounded on her then, sudden and fierce. “I’ve had enough surprises from you. It’s my turn to lay one on you!”

“What-what do you mean?” Tess asked.

“You know exactly what I mean!” Kivar snapped. “I’ve just been informed that the reason you skipped out on today’s meeting is because you just lost control over your task!”

“I haven’t lost control of anything.” Tess shot back, knowing instinctively that this was the moment when she could gain the upper hand. She forced herself to look directly at Kivar, scornful and defiant.

“Haven’t you?” Lonnie asked. “You were too freaked out for it not ta have been a major foul up.”

Tess shot Lonnie an angry glare but there was a trace of nervousness in her voice as she replied, “I told you I took care of it.”

Lonnie’s eyes narrowed as she caught the nervousness in Tess’s voice. Something didn’t feel right about this. Lonnie had an odd feeling that Ava was acting like herself. For one thing Ava was never anything but confident and downright cocky when talking to her and Rath. Right now she looked almost scared. But before she could say anything about it, Kivar spoke up.

“How did you take care of it?” He demanded. For a moment he looked alarmed as he asked, “You didn’t kill her did you? Like you killed that human friend of theirs?”

“No…” Tess replied, understanding finally dawning on what they were talking about. Me! They’re talking about me! She thought in a sharp thrill of fear. “No, I didn’t. What do you take me for, an idiot? I know we need her.” she replied.

“No!” Kivar thundered. “We need the Royal Four! The key is of no use to me unless all four members of the royal house are there to work it!”

Tess’s eyes instantly widened in surprise when she heard this piece of news. But what held her attention most was the referral to the key.

“Do you have the key?” She asked casually. “The key to the granolith?”

Kivar looked at her as if she was stupid. “Of course I have it! You have seen it! Why else would I be so desperate to get the Royal Four if I didn’t have the key with me?” He asked. “I’ve had my scientists work too damn hard and long to make it to loose everything now.”

“Where is it?” Tess asked.

Kivar hesitated as if contemplating then he pulled out a crystal rod from his pocket. “Here. With me.”

Tess stared at it, unable to believe that this might be all it would take to find out more about themselves, to hold power over the granolith. It was then she knew that it was time to lead Kivar into the trap.

A smile flitted across her face as she looked back at Kivar. “I think you’ll be pleased by the news I have for you.” She told him.

“I’ll be the judge of that.” He told her.

“Oh, you’ll be pleased all right.” Tess replied. She paused, prolonging the moment before saying, “I know where the granolith is…”

Those words had Rath and Lonnie gaping at her in disbelief and Kivar grinning.

“Now that is news…” He said.

“How did you find it?” Rath asked, more than a little irritated that Ava succeeded where he and Lonnie failed. “Me and Lonnie searched this shitty town up an’ down and we found no sign of it.”

Tess shot him a contemptuous look. “You think they’d be stupid enough to hide it in Roswell?” She asked. “No wonder you weren’t given the granolith to protect. You’d have lost it to some fucking government project.”

Rath flushed angrily but all he could do was look at Ava angrily, knowing that she had the upper hand.

“Where is it, Ava?” Kivar asked eagerly. “And how did you find it?”

“Finding it was easy.” Tess replied, though she tried to come up with an idea. Suddenly, she knew. Smiling she replied, “Tess volunteered it….”

Kivar laughed then, long and low. He assumed she meant that she had tortured Tess into telling her the location. It chilled Tess to know that her life hardly mattered to this person.

“Do you want me to take you to it?” Tess asked.

“Yes,” Kivar nodded. “Nothing would please me more…”

“Then let’s go…” Tess replied, with a smile of her own.

* * * * * * * * * * *

“We’re pretty far out of Roswell.” Rath commented as the miles flew past.

Tess shrugged as she replied, “Makes sense, doesn’t it?”

“Hiding it where no one will even think of looking.” Kivar mused as he saw Eagle Rock coming up. “Not bad…”

Tess shot him a smirk. “They’re smart…but not smart enough.”

She gazed at Eagle Rock in the distance, fervently praying that everyone was ready. As the pod chamber grew closer and closer, Tess grew more anxious. She had no way of knowing if everything was in place. She didn’t even know what exactly Serena was planning on doing. She just hoped that there would be some clue from them.

She looked in the rear view mirror at the two cars following hers, filled with skins who Kivar had needed to bring along and she cursed silently. Kivar had surprised her by coming himself to Roswell. Not only had it forced her to push her plan up, but probably the others wouldn’t be expecting to see for a while yet. She just hoped they were ready.

They reached Eagle Rock in another few minutes and Tess stopped the car and got out, followed by Kivar, Rath, Lonnie and the group of ten people Kivar had brought with them. She scanned the area, looking for any sign or clue as to what was the plan. She didn’t see anyone else and she didn’t know whether to be relieved or worried.

“Well?” Kivar demanded as he came to stand next to Tess. “You said it was here. I don’t see it.”

Trying to stall, she gave him a cool smile. “Do you really think that after all the trouble they’ve gone to keep it hidden; they’re going to display it for everyone to see?”

“You better know what you’re doing, Ava.” Kivar warned.

I hope so too. Tess thought to herself as she confidently walked up the rock formation. Whatever it is you’ve got planned, you better do it fast. She thought to the others as she hesitantly placed her hand on the wall.

Unsure of what to do, she did whatever came to mind. All she needed was to distract Kivar long enough to allow Max and the others to take him by surprise, when he was least cautious.

She let her hands begin to glow, a low pulsing blue. Slowly the light spread from her hand on to the rock formation. Tess closed her eyes, concentrating on the energy flowing through her, forcing it to combine and form the symbol of Antar on the rock.

“Ava…what’s going on?” Kivar asked, as he watched the symbol of the whirlwind galaxy form in bright blue light on the side of the rock formation.

“Just watch…” Tess told him. You want the granolith, Kivar? She thought as a plan began to form in her mind. I’ll give you the granolith…

She let her energy grow; making sure it came to full power. She would need all of her powers and energy for what she had planned and she hoped that she could pull it off. Carefully, making sure not to make it obvious, Tess began to mind warp all the skins, dupes and Kivar there. In her mind she imagined the granolith appearing out of nowhere in the middle of the desert, surrounded by the blue light of the symbol. Then she forced the images onto everyone around her.

Rath and Lonnie gave a collective gasp as the air shimmered in front of them and the granolith appeared, as if an invisibility shield had been lifted off it. They watched the image waver and flicker, as if the shield was still not under control. Kivar felt excitement grow in him as he saw the granolith appear. All he could do was look at the massive object, tasting the victory that was his.

No one noticed Tess as she bucked and almost fell to her knees due to the exertion of holding up the mind warp. She had never held it over so many people and the effort required was draining her fast. The image that was flickering was not intentional but rather because she had trouble holding on to the mind warp.

She felt her powers drain, she felt the weakness engulfing her as she forced the image not to waver but she knew she couldn’t hold it for long. She only prayed that whatever Max intended to do, he do it now.

Suddenly, she felt a burst of power run through her, fresh and unfamiliar. She felt the new power merge with her and pour into the mindwarp she was holding. With the renewed supply of energy the granolith now took full form before everyone and stayed.

Tess didn’t have time to wonder who had just combined their powers with hers; all she knew was that it had been in the nick of time. Another moment and she would have lost control.

“This is what I’ve been waiting for ….” Kivar murmured as he stepped closer to the image of the granolith. “Victory is ours now…this is all we need. This is what we have been waiting for. With the granolith we can rule Antar, like we were meant to…”

“Are you so sure about that?”

“What are you talking about, Ava?” Kivar asked, turning to give her a puzzled look. “Of course it is…the granolith holds power…”

“What granolith, Kivar?” She asked, a smug tone to her voice.

“What the fuck is going on?” Lonnie suddenly shouted. “Kivar! The granolith…it’s gone!”

Kivar whirled to look at where the granolith was and found only a vast stretch of desert there. “Ava!” He shouted. “What is going on?”

Tess now stepped forward, a pleased look on her face. She had dropped the mindwarp when she felt Serena’s presence near her, and heard her whisper that they were ready. She hadn’t seen Serena anywhere but she didn’t hesitate to wonder where the voice came from.

“Haven’t you figured it out, Kivar…” She asked. “I’m not Ava… Ava’s dead.”

Without warning, Max, Michael, Serena, Isabel and Liz suddenly appeared. They all had their hands up, ready to use their powers should anyone even move. The mind warp Serena had held to keep them cloaked was lifted and now they stood surrounding the small army of aliens.

“You!” Kivar stuttered, bewildered by what was happening. “What…? How…?”

“You’re not the only one with surprises, Kivar.” Max told him, his hand still raised in preparation to shoot.

Instantly, Lonnie, Rath and the skins fell into combat mood. The gathered together, near each other, eyeing the people around them warily. They too put up their hands, ready to let loose a blast of energy at Kivar’s command.

“I knew something was wrong.” Lonnie hissed.

“You’re not getting the granolith.” Tess told Kivar. “Not if we have anything to do about it.”

“I’ve killed you once,” Kivar reminded them, his eyes cold, hard and angry. “I can do it again.”

“You can try…” Liz added, her own eyes filled with determination. “But I can guarantee you won’t win!”

Shadows -- Part 96

Post by FallenMagic »

Author's Note: Hey all, it's time for a part I'm sure most of you have been waiting for since forever  (with the exception of a dreamer reunion, of course  ). I didn't like the way it's come out, it's not how I wanted to write it but that's the way the muse writes I guess

Part 96

The tension in the air was thick and pressing. Though Kivar had brought ten skins with him and then there was Lonnie, Rath and him, the odds of two to one still did not please him. He had a distinct feeling that this group was more formidable than they looked.

Max knew that they had Kivar and his men surrounded and there was as such no means of escape. But even then he felt a knot of worry grow in his stomach as the thought of a fight. None of them were trained warriors. None of them had the skills that Kivar’s men doubtlessly had. But what they themselves lacked in skill, Max knew they would make up for in determination.

“Max, things would be so much more simpler if you’d just hand over the granolith.” Kivar cajoled.

Max’s eyes flashed with anger as he said, “Why? So you can kill more innocent people? So you can murder my people for your pleasure?”

“They are not your people, Max.” Kivar replied, his voice cold and scornful. “You’re not Zan and you never will be. And even if you were, you do not control the throne anymore. I do.”

“Then I would assume you have no need for the granolith, Kivar.” Liz interjected, her voice knowing and smug. “But you do…and we have it. That gives us power – not you.”

Kivar whipped his head to look at her, fury and indignation blazing in his eyes. “We’ll see about that!” He hissed.

“Yes, I guess we will….” Michael retorted.

With that, a silent signal was given to both sides and the fight started. Both sides shot at each other at the same time, a mixture of blue, red and green energies criss-crossing in the air.

Michael swiveled, ducking as a blast was aimed at him from a skin. In retaliation, he used his powers to pick up a huge boulder that had been strategically placed around the battle field by the others beforehand and threw it at the skin. The pressure from the fall and the boulder on top of the skin had the silver button at his back shattering, turning the skin to dust.

Meanwhile, Isabel and Tess were backed up against each other, warily eyeing the three skins circling around them. Tess was still feeling drained from her use of her powers so Isabel had her hand lightly clasped with hers, combining both of their energies. Isabel and Tess refrained from blasting the trio, letting the shield protect them. They took the moment to build up their energy level to a high pitch. Isabel increased her pressure on Tess’s hand as she concentrated on holding the power inside her. Sensing that Isabel was ready, Tess abruptly dropped the shield and shouted, “Now!”

Both girls let their energies intermingle and shoot an invisible blast at a radius of two feet, effectively wiping out the three skins and another one that had been within distance. Staggered by what they had done, both girls looked at each other in surprise but they quickly headed back into the fight, not letting themselves think about the intensity of their power.

Max had so far been trying to get to Kivar and Liz and Serena were doing their best to take Rath and Lonnie down but the remaining skins had constantly been getting in their way. As Max managed to kill of another skin with a well placed blow to the back, he saw Kivar aiming for Liz.

His heart beat sped up and his adrenaline shot up as he shouted at her to duck. When he saw Liz hadn’t heard him, he used his powers to push her away, sending her sprawling on her back. But in trying to get Liz out of the line of fire, he had not paid attention to the skins around him who had used his distraction to aim for him. It wasn’t until he heard the tell tale sound of a skin turning to dust just behind him that he turned abruptly and found Michael smirking at him.

“Just watching your back, Maxwell.” He remarked.

Max nodded at him gratefully and turned in time to see his sister turn another skin to dust. Letting Tess, Michael and Serena take care of the remaining three skins, Isabel, Max and Liz turned their attention to two dupes and Kivar.

“Guess it’s just us now.” Max mocked.

“Let’s see who wins this time.” Isabel added as she let loose a powerful energy blast at Lonnie. Lonnie staggered and let out an angry yell before she retaliated.

“You bitch!” she hissed. “You gonna be sorry you did that!”

Instead of answering Isabel aimed another killing blow at her but Lonnie just brought up her shield, smirking as she blocked the attack. Out of the corner of her eyes she saw Rath and Liz interlocked in a battle of fast moves. They weren’t hitting at each other with their powers rather were going hand to hand.

Liz kept her gaze locked onto Rath’s, her eyes blazing with fury. She used every technique Serena had taught her as she ducked to avoid Rath’s box kick. Crouching, she slid her legs along the floor, trying to sweep Rath’s legs from under him. Rath faltered as her aim made contact but deftly managed to avoid falling. They went into a fancy combination of punches and kicks, both of them managing to avoid getting hit. But even then Liz had the slight upper hand as with her moves she had managed to make Rath retreat with every punch and kick. Steadily she had him slightly apart from the group so as not to hurt any of her friends in what she had planned for him.

Once they were at a safe distance, Liz pretended to back off a little. Rath noticed and smirked.

“Is that all you can do, sweetheart?” He goaded.

Liz’s skin began to crackle with green energy as she felt her anger reach a fever pitch. She recalled how he had almost killed Maria and how he had almost killed Max. Her voice low with barely controlled fury, she regarded him carefully as she said, “I haven’t even begun.”

Rath’s eyes widened in terror as he saw her energy build. He had never witnessed such power before. He could feel it in the air, in his skin, in her. Even Ava didn’t have so much energy inside her, Rath knew that instinctively, just as he knew he was not going to be able to fight her off without help. Frantically he looked around for Lonnie but found her barely holding her own against Isabel and Tess, who had joined the battle.

“You can’t get out of this Rath.” Liz’s voice was pleased yet cold and flat. “I have you right where I want you…”

Rath bravely tried to put on a calm façade. Holding up his own hand in threat, he replied, “Are you so sure about that?”

“Plenty.” Was the answer. Then, without warning, Liz lashed out with her energy and even though Rath moved quickly, he wasn’t quick enough. Liz had used her energy to pin him to the boulder right behind him, one that he hadn’t noticed Liz lead him to during their fight.

“What the-” He began as he struggled futilely.

Liz smiled at him, and came up to him. She trailed a finger down his chest softly before looking up at him and he noticed her eyes filled with deadly calm. He felt panic fill him as Liz said in a soft silky voice, “You know Rath…contrary to what you may think…” She paused and placed her hand on his chest, splaying her hand. Rath’s eyes widened as he realized what was about to happen and he was helpless to do anything to stop her. Still smiling coldly at him, Liz finished, “…you weren’t that good of a kisser…”

Then she released her energy, searing his chest, and turning him to ashes within moments due to the intensity of her power. His painful cry echoed off the rocks but Liz watched almost dispassionately as he died before calmly turning back and heading into the battle. She knew what she had done should have shaken her but all she thought of then was all that he and Lonnie had done to her and her friends and she decided that she had still let him off to easily.

Lonnie wasn’t faring all that well herself as she faced off Tess and Isabel. The two of them had managed to bring down her shield and even though Lonnie was deflecting their powers as best as she could, she was faltering and weakening and she knew it.

She heard Rath’s desperate, painful cry and she yelled, “Rath!”

With murder glinting in her eyes she turned on the two girls and spat, “That fuckin’ bitch killed him!”

“Why don’t you join him?” Tess asked as she aimed another blast at Lonnie that had her flying backwards. Tess and Isabel stepped closer to where Lonnie was and towering over her, Tess asked, “I had you fooled into believing I was Ava…you never saw it coming.”

Lonnie glared up at Tess in hatred as she replied, “You’ll never be as powerful as Ava. You’ll never be like her.”

“Who says I want to?” Tess asked.

She and Isabel both raised their hand and aimed for the last shot but Lonnie wasn’t done yet. With a bust of energy that came from desperation as well as vengefulness, Lonnie had them flying backwards, falling to the floor with a painful thud. Lonnie raised her hand in Tess’s direction to take her down first after flicking a glance at a prone Isabel. Confident that Isabel wouldn’t be getting up soon, Lonnie stepped nearer Tess, intending to pay her back.

“Who’s the winner now, Tess?” Lonnie asked smugly.

Tess groaned in pain as her head and ribs ached from the fall. Reaching to touch her side lightly, she winced. Nothing was broken but it would be bruised.

If I manage to live through this, that is. She thought as she tried to protect herself. But Lonnie aimed a swift kick in her ribs that had Tess rolling over in pain.

“Say goodbye…” Lonnie smirked. Tess closed her eyes tightly, thinking only of Kyle as she waited for the blast but instead she heard a gasp of surprise and then someone falling next to her.

Opening her eyes, Tess saw Lonnie lying dead only inches from her. Turning over Tess saw Isabel standing there, her hand raised, her lip bloody and her hair a mess but there was an anger and fire raging in her eyes. Realizing that Isabel had just saved her life, Tess accepted her hand to help her back on her feet.

“Thanks.” She said to Isabel.

Isabel nodded. “Don’t mention it. She was beginning to irritate me.”

Tess laughed but then winced. “Ow! Remind me not to laugh. That hurts!”

The two girls then turned to the last person still standing in the battlefield. Kivar. Max and Kivar were both heading off each other, both magnificent in their control over their powers and both determined to be the one to win this.

Liz, Serena and Michael walked over to the edge of the battle where Tess and Isabel stood, all of them feeling the unspoken order from Max not to interfere. Silently, with some dread they watched the two of them block shot after shot. When Kivar managed to hit Max on the shoulder, Liz stifled a scream. Instead she tightened her hand into a fist, trying not to run in there and help Max. Almost as if reading her thoughts, Tess reached out and pulled Liz’s hand in hers in a comforting gesture. Surprised and a bit pleased, Liz gave her a small smile of thanks.

Max was trying very hard not to let his concentration falter. He knew that if he was off by so much as even a second, Kivar would have the upper hand. And he did not want to give Kivar even a little leverage. As Max deftly brought up his shield to block the staccato of blasts Kivar aimed at him, Max tried to bring his flagging powers up to full force. It was taking a lot out of him, but he had to be in position before he allowed anyone else to enter this fight.

He hoped Serena knew what he wanted her to do. He had told her briefly and quickly what he intended to do before Kivar had arrived. He hadn’t had much time to plan it nor did he know if it was a wise move, but somehow he had known that he alone could not be able to defeat Kivar. He had felt it deep inside of him, like some innate knowledge that this wasn’t his fight alone but a chance for all of them finally get back at Kivar for the trouble he had caused them all.

Serena had been watching quietly, waiting for Max to be in position. When she saw Max’s shield go up, she knew that the time was close. She called everyone to her attention and when they all looked at her, she said, “Michael, you, Isabel and Tess head in there. But stay out of sight. Those boulders there should block you long enough for you to be in position without being seen.”

“What position?” Michael asked in confusion.

“The four points of the compass.” Serena replied. “Max is already standing North, you’re taking East, Isabel across from you at West and Tess south of Max. These four pinnacles are where the powers of nature are at their peak. Max is counting on it to help increase all your powers. You can’t defeat Kivar alone. All four of you need to work together.”

“Then why hasn’t Max allowed us to enter the fight before now?” Isabel asked.

“Because Max needed to be sure he was standing due North. If you had entered before and Kivar would have seen you, he would have known Max is up to something. Contrary to what you think, the granolith isn’t the only thing that needs the Royal Four. For your powers to be maximum, you need to work together. And just as a precaution, the four points are where you’re going to stand. Kivar knows that but Max doesn’t think that he knows that we know that.”

“What about me?” Liz asked.

“This isn’t your fight, Liz.” Serena replied. She motioned to the four aliens. “It’s theirs.”

Liz nodded although a bit reluctantly as the other three silently went off to stand where they had been told.

“You sure this will work?” Liz asked nervously, watching as Kivar tried to break through Max’s shield.

“I hope so.” Was Serena’s only reply as she watched grimly the scene before her.

Max didn’t let his shield drop until he saw that Michael, Isabel and Tess were all in place. The second they were, he felt a renewed energy run through him, and he dropped the shield, ready to truly take on Kivar. Kivar hadn’t noticed the others so when Max dropped his shield he smirked.

“Tired?” he asked.

“Not at all.” Max replied calmly, raising his hand. “Everything’s in place.”

This time Kivar startled at his words, suspecting something was up. Looking around he saw Michael, Isabel and Tess around him, a few feet away, encompassing him in the center of an invisible circle. Shocked and worried, Kivar knew that Max had figured out the rule of four points.

“You really didn’t think we didn’t know, did you?” Max asked.

“How-how did you find out?” Kivar asked.

“Serena…and a little bit of common sense.” Max replied.

“You’ve wanted to see us combine our powers Kivar.” Isabel retorted. Raising her hand along with everyone else she gave him a cold smile. “You’re going to get your wish.”

“What?” Kivar gasped, finding himself unable to move.

His eyes widened as he felt the energy of the circle whip around him as all four members of the royal house raised their hands upwards and let loose a long blast. The energies combined in the air, right above Kivar. He could feel the heat from the energies, could feel the intensity of the power as it glowed a bright pulsing blue.

A fierce wind was whipped up with the powers, swirling around all of them, keeping the circle barred from outsiders. Kivar struggled against the powers that held him but he couldn’t move, only stare in sheer horror at the power intensifying with each passing second.

Max watched their powers combine, he could feel their energies flowing in his body, re-energizing him, making him feel powerful. At that moment he knew that the only reason the real Royal Four had died on Antar was because they hadn’t combined their powers. If they had Kivar would never have beaten them. Kivar had known that and that’s why he had targeted them all separately.

But not this time… Max thought. He was about to give the signal to turn the energy on Kivar when Tess suddenly shouted at him to stop. Turning to look at her he gave her a puzzled look, not understanding why she wanted to stop.

“Tess, this is it.” Max told her. “We hesitate now and we’ll lose control.”

“Max…the key! The key to the granolith!” Tess cried out, suddenly remembering. “He has it with him! If we kill him then it’s gone!”

Startled, Max whipped his head to look at Kivar who was smiling at him in glee. “She’s right, Max.” Kivar said. “Kill me and you loose the key. You can’t break the circle now without losing control over your powers…you know that as well as I.”

“Maxwell!” Michael shouted. “He’s bluffing! We can take the key without loosing control of the circle.”

Kivar turned to look at him scornfully. “Try it!”

Michael hesitated and Max shook his head slightly, indicating Michael to stay put. He didn’t know what to do. Kivar was right, they couldn’t break the circle but they needed the key as well.

Liz watched the conflicting emotions flicker over Max’s face. She and Serena were within hearing distance and could hear everything. She knew, just as Max did, that Kivar wasn’t lying. Thinking frantically what to do, Liz suddenly turned to Serena.

“Serena, when you checked me out for my powers, were their any undeveloped ones there?” She asked.

“What do you mean?” Serena asked.

“My mind powers are more powerful than my physical ones…do you think I can control something telepathically?” Liz asked.

Serena shook her head. “No. You can’t. I checked out every possible power you could have. You seem limited to dream walking and premonitions.”

“Is there any latent potential for more?” Liz asked, an idea beginning to take shape.

“There is always potential. It just needs to be revived.” Serena replied. She narrowed her eyes at Liz. “Why? What are you planning?”

Liz shrugged as she began to walk towards the circle. “I’m not completely sure yet.” She replied.

Max was still debating what to do when he saw Liz come near the edge of the circle. With her hair flying around her, she raised a hand to shield her eyes from the dust flying up in the air. She knew what had to be done, she knew it was the only way but the only way to do it was if Max trusted her completely. She had never tried something like this before and she was nervous. She knew she could do it if she tried but it still made her hesitate to offer.

“Max, I can help.” She told him.

“You’re just a human.” Kivar sneered.

Everyone ignored him.

“Liz, I don’t think you should—” he began but she cut him off.

“Max, I have powers. I have an idea that might just work but I need you to trust me. I need your help in this.”

When Max hesitated, Isabel spoke up, “Max, let her try. Liz always knows what she’s doing.”

Liz looked at Max expectantly and when Max nodded, she stepped up next to him. She turned her brown eyes on his amber ones and said, “Do you trust me?”

“With my life.” Max answered honestly. For a moment he forgot all about that danger around them, looking only at Liz with such love in his eyes that Liz had to look away.

Liz swallowed, more affected than she wanted to be. “I need to join the circle.” She told him.

“Liz, that could be dangerous!” Max cried. “We don’t know if it will accept you.”

“That’s a chance I’m willing to take.” Liz replied.

“Liz, no!” Max said again, worried for her.

Liz smiled gently at him. “Max, trust me…”

Hesitating, Max nodded. Liz turned to face Kivar, her eyes gazing at him contemptuously. Then, she gave all the other three a hesitant smile.

“I’ll be borrowing your powers for a moment, guys.” She told them as she stepped into the circle.

Immediately she was hit by the intensity of the power present. She had felt it outside the circle but in it, it was mind blowing. Struggling to keep control over herself, Liz reached out for Max’s hand. Without hesitation Max reach out and took her hand in his.

The second their hands touched, a bright light flashed between them, leaving them momentarily stunned. After getting over the shock of the connection that had opened between them, Liz closed her eyes and let Max, Michael, Tess and Isabel’s power enter her.

They all felt the pull and they let themselves go, letting Liz take control. They watched as for a moment Liz struggled with the powers before finally opening her eyes. There was a calmness about her as she merged their powers and turned them inwards. Serena had said that latent powers needed to be woken up and if Liz was right then, combing everyone’s powers briefly would give her enough energy to be able to call upon the power she possessed and needed right now.

Instinctively Liz held out her hand and gave a silent call for the key. For a moment nothing happened. Kivar smirked and Liz was a bit disappointed. But when she felt Max’s reassure flow through her via their connection, she spurred her efforts. This time she concentrated with every ounce of her being and after a long moment there was a movement from Kivar.

The key suddenly tore itself free from the pouch Kivar had it tied up in and flew into Liz’s hands. For a second Liz looked as surprise and Kivar did. Neither one of them had really expected it to work.

“It worked!” Tess cried. “Liz, you did it!”

Liz turned to look at Max, still stunned and then turned to look at Tess. “Yes, it did.”

“But that was a foolish move.” Kivar suddenly said, his tone pleased and gleeful.

Without warning, Liz fell to the floor with a cry of pain, the key falling from her hands. Her hand slipped away from Max’s as she let out another cry of pain.

“What are you doing to her?” Max asked with fury as he rounded on Kivar.

Kivar had taken the lapse in power the others had and managed to raise his hand. With his hand trained on Liz and malicious grin on his face as he said, “Just having fun…”

“Let her go!” Michael shouted.

“Not unless you let me go.” Kivar countered, increasing the pressure on Liz until she nearly screamed.

Max felt panic and anger grow in him as he fixed Kivar with a cold look. “Not on your life!” He replied. Kivar was hurting Liz, Max knew without a doubt that he wouldn’t hesitate in killing Liz if that’s what it took. Max had no intention of letting Kivar get that far.

With a silent signal to the others, they once more concentrated on building up their power and this time they didn’t hesitate to turn it on Kivar.

He hadn’t expected them to hurt him while he was hurting Liz but when he saw the light grow brighter and he saw the angry glint in Max’s eyes, he knew this was the end. With a finish that was almost anti-climatic, the energy burst at Kivar.

“This is our revenge, Kivar.” Max said as Kivar’s eyes widened in silent pain before he turned to ashes.

The second Kivar was dead, the energy dissipated and Liz struggled to sit up. Max was crouching next to her in a heart beat. Cradling her to him, he pressed a light kiss to her forehead.

“Oh God, Liz. I’m so sorry.” He cried. Pulling away to look at her, he asked, “Are you okay?”

Liz smiled a little at him, thought slightly uncomfortable at being held by him. Pulling out of his arms, she nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine.” She hesitated before she placed a hand on Max’s cheek in a tender gesture. She was smiling when she said, “Thanks to you.”

Max was a bit taken aback by her gesture but then he smiled at her, letting his hand rest on top of hers. Serena, Tess, Michael and Isabel came up to them then to help them up. Serena picked up the key and gave Liz a smile.

“Well done.”

Returning the grin, Liz laughed. “Learned from the best.”

“Let’s say we go to the pod chamber, now.” Michael said. Looking up he mused, “The others must be frantic in there, especially Maria.”

“She must have driven poor Alex and Kyle up the wall.” Isabel put in.

Max looked at the place where Kivar had stood moments before. He felt oddly calm, as if he hadn’t just had a great battle only moments before. This was it. It had ended. They were safe.

Max smiled a little to himself at the thought and said quietly, “Kivar’s gone…”

At those words everyone was hit by the thought that they were finally safe. The relief that washed through them was apparent on their faces when they glanced at each other. Now only one thing remained…the granolith.

The source of all trouble to begin with.

Shadows -- Part 97

Part 97

Pacing restlessly in the small outer room of the pod chamber, Maria glanced at her watch again and then back at the sealed doorway. She had lost count of how many times she had checked her watch. The worry was beginning to escalate as she, Kyle and Alex sat waiting for the others to arrive. She didn’t even want to think about the possibility that the others might loose against Kivar; that she, Kyle and Alex might have to carry out the task of destroying the granolith to stop from it falling into Kivar’s hands.

Wringing her hands nervously, Maria turned away from her anxious perusal of the door and asked, the worry and panic tingeing the tones of her voice, “What do you think is happening out there?”

Kyle looked up from his own worried thoughts and shrugged. “I’m hoping they’re kicking Kivar’s ass.” He replied.

“That’s just it, isn’t it?” Maria asked a bit frantically as she ran a hand through her hair. “We’re just hoping. That’s the only thing that we can do: hope. God, I hate being shut up here without any way to find out or see what’s going on outside. This waiting is killing me!”

“I don’t think there is need to worry yet.” Alex told her. “I’m still feeling some pretty strong emotions coming off from everyone. Something pretty major is happening outside right now. There’s just so much…energy coming from everyone. I think it’s safe to assume they’re alive.”

“Alive, yes but what about all right?” Maria asked. “What if – what if someone is hurt, what if it’s Michael?”

“Maria, you need to calm down.” Alex replied soothingly.

“Calm down?” Maria asked in disbelief. “Alex, that’s Michael out there fighting some super powerful alien enemy! My best friend is out there! How can you ask me to calm down?”

“We all know what you are going through, Maria.” Alex told her. “Isabel is out there too.”

“Maria, you have to trust that they’re going to be fine. They know how to take care of themselves.” Kyle put in, though being careful to hide his own apprehension and fear.

Maria wrapped her arms around herself, nodding. “You’re right,” She said, sighing. “You’re right. They’ll be fine….They have to be….”

“They better be.” Kyle replied. “I’m not looking forward to trying to destroy that huge machine – the granolith. It’s of alien origin, who knows what revenge it might try to exact on me!”

At that both Maria and Alex laughed, the tension dispelling a bit. Maria came and sat down next to Kyle and without a second thought Kyle wrapped a comforting arm around her shoulders. Smiling gratefully, Maria leaned into him, trying not to think about what could be happening outside.

“They’re going to be all right, you know.” Kyle murmured to her, more to help himself believe it than her.

Maria squeezed his hand reassuringly as she whispered, “I know.”

They sat like that for what seemed a long time, watching in puzzled silence when Alex began to walk around the room, examining cracks, the pods, the debris lying about. When he started to rap lightly on the rock walls, Maria finally gave in to her curiosity.

“What exactly are you doing, Alex?” She asked.

Alex barely turned to look at her as he continued his knocking. “I’m looking for any hollow area, maybe even a hidden panel.” He explained.

“Why?” Kyle asked.

“Well, there’s this theory Serena and I have…” He began with a slightly hesitant shrug. He turned to face them, briefly stopping what he was doing. “We think that maybe the destiny book Tess found isn’t the real thing. Maybe there is another one out there, one that is the actual book.”

“But then why is the other book there?” Kyle asked, confused.

“It’s just a theory but according to what we figure, the first book was a decoy, just in case Kivar did manage to get his hands on the book.” Alex replied. “Which, as we all know, he did.”

“How do you know that what he has is not the real book?” Maria asked.

“Because it mentions nothing about the granolith.” Alex pointed out. “Don’t you think that if the granolith is of such importance it would at least have been mentioned in the book?” He shook his head, a small smile forming on his lips. “I decoded the book for Ava and there was nothing about the granolith in there. I think the real book is still here, in this room.”

“I have to say Whitman, that’s pretty good theory.” Kyle said with admiration. “The question is that if there is another book, how do we find it?”

At this Alex sighed and plopped down on the floor in front of them. “That’s the problem. I have no idea. My guess is that only Max, Isabel, Tess and Michael can find it.”

“Makes sense.” Maria mused. “Seeing how everything else needs all four of them.”

“Let’s just hope they all make it out of the battle alive, otherwise we might never find out if my theory is right.” Alex said.

Maria shot him a sharp look. “Don’t even think something like that!” She scolded. “They’ll make it.”

Almost as if that was the cue they had been waiting for the door to the pod chamber began to rumble and shift slowly. As sunlight filtered through the opening doorway, all three of them tensed inadvertently and sprang to their feet. Even though they were desperately hoping that it was there friends, and maybe even knew it inside them, it didn’t prevent them from tensing, anticipating a fight.

When Max and Michael first stepped through the now open doorway, Maria let out a small cry of relief and pure joy and launched herself at Michael, gluing her lips to his. Michael didn’t pull away, instead he gathered her tightly against him, kissing her back with all the relief, love and passion he felt for her. He had been scared going into this fight, worrying that he might never see Maria again. But he had managed to come out of it alive with only a few minor scratches and bruises. Hell, he wouldn’t have cared even if he broken a few bones, just as long he got to hold Maria again.

When they finally broke apart, Michael cradled her face in his hands, the love and relief shining in his eyes and mirroring what he saw in her eyes. “I love you.” He whispered to her, watching her eyes tear up. “God, you don’t know how much.”

Maria, still reeling from the words, choked back on a sob. The tears fell from her eyes as she placed a tender kiss on his lips before replying, “I love you too.” Then she smiled and asked, “What took you so long, spaceboy?”

Michael grinned in reply, pulling her to his side. “I have no idea…”

Meanwhile, Alex was holding Isabel who was clinging to Alex as if she never intended to let him go. From the looks of things Alex did not seem to mind at all.

“It’s finished.” Isabel told Alex. “He’s gone. We can finally get on with our lives.”

Alex placed a kiss on her forehead as he wrapped his arms around her. “It seems impossible but he really is gone.” Then almost as if he doubted his own words, he pulled back to look at Isabel anxiously. “Uh…he is gone, isn’t he?”

Isabel smiled and placed a light kiss on his lips. “Yes, he is.” She assured him.

“All of them are.” Tess put in. They turned to look at her and found her being held tightly by Kyle. Tess gave a laugh of pure joy and victory. “Rath, Lonnie, Ava, Kivar…we defeated them!”

“But what about the skins?” Kyle asked. “There must be many more of them here.”

“I doubt we need to worry much about them anymore.” Max replied. “With no one to rule them, with no one to follow I think they’re going to stay out of sight at least until eventually their husks die.”

Serena, who had been watching everything quietly, now stepped forward and drew attention to herself. “This is not the end.” She told them.

“What do you mean?” Max asked with a frown.

“Kivar’s dead. What more could be needed to finish this war?” Michael demanded.

Serena gave Michael a sharp look, making him fall silent. “There is still much to be done.” Serena told them all. She paused and gave Max an almost apologetic look before asking, “What do you intend to do about your planet, Max?”

Max looked a bit startled by the question as he shook his head. “We don’t have to worry about Antar anymore.” Max replied. “Like Michael said, Kivar’s dead. His reign is over.”

“And Antar is without a king.” Serena pointed out. “Even if Kivar’s threat is no longer there, they still need someone to guide them, a ruler to rebuild the empire.”

“Haven’t they ever heard of something called a democracy?” Maria asked dryly.

“They wouldn’t know where to start.” Serena told her seriously. “They’ve always been ruled by a king. To change things now would put the kingdom into upheaval.”

“The planet is already in upheaval.” Michael pointed out. “Changing things shouldn’t have a disastrous effect.”

“Even if you are right, who’s going to teach them the basic concept of a government?” Serena countered. “They would still need someone to guide them.” As she said this, she turned to give Max a pointed look.

“Serena, you don’t mean for Max to go to Antar, do you?” Liz asked in a shocked voice. Her eyes were wide as she looked from Serena to Max. “Max, you can’t go back there!”

But Max didn’t reply as he kept his eyes on Serena, thinking, contemplating. He knew Serena was right. He knew that Antar couldn’t be without a king. But he was no king. He couldn’t go back to rule some alien planet. Earth was home, it was where he wanted to be…with his family. But at the same time, in an odd way, Antar was home too. The people there were depending on him. How could he let them down?

“Serena’s right.” Max finally said. “Antar needs a king, or at least a temporary ruler to help them settle down again.”

“Max!” Isabel cried, pulling away from Alex to rush over to her brother. She grabbed Max’s arm in panic as she cried, “You’re not seriously thinking about going back, are you? You can’t, you know you can’t!”

“And I also know that I can’t abandon my people.” Max replied softly.

“Max, we don’t the first thing about that place!” Tess protested. “We don’t even know if we can survive there!”

“I’m not letting you go, Maxwell.” Michael added, his face set. “And if you do go then I’m coming with you.”

“Michael—” Both Maria and Max began to say but Michael cut them off with a shake of his head.

“Either I go with him or he doesn’t go at all.”

Serena sighed and rolled her eyes. “Why do you guys always jump to such drastic measures?” She asked. “Who says you have to return to Antar to finish things?”

Everyone turned to look at Serena with surprise and hope. Seeing their expressions she sighed again. “Some things never change in any timeline…”

“Are you saying there is another way?” Liz asked.

“There is always another way.” Serena replied. “You just have to find it.”

Max ran a hand through his hair, scared to hope that there really might be some other way. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t thought about this. He had. He had spent weeks thinking about all of this the first time he had found out who he really was. He simply did not see another way except to go back himself.

“What if we were meant to go back?” Max asked quietly. “The dupes were made for the purpose of returning back to Antar. What if we were too?”

“You don’t know that, Max.” Maria replied vehemently. “Like Serena said, if there is another way, we’ll find it.”

“But what if there is none?” Max asked again agitated. He didn’t want them to nurse false hope of him staying here. Maybe they might not be able to find some other way.

“We will find one, Max.” Liz said. Max turned to look at her in surprise. Her eyes were blazing with fierce determination and for a moment Max watched in shocked silence as Liz walked up to him, stopping only inches away.

Her eyes were locked on his and he read the blatant rejection of his going away. He thought he saw some other emotion flicker in her eyes briefly as she reached up to place her hand on his cheek.

“We are not making the mistake we’ve made countless times before.” Liz said to him softly. Her eyes shifted away from his for a moment before returning back to his. Her eyes were now soft, vulnerable and pained as if recalling some distant memory. “We’ve never tried to find other ways. We’ve always done what seemed like the right thing to do but it never really was. I think it’s time we learned to stop and think.”

The expression in her eyes had Max instantly knowing that Liz wasn’t just talking about his having to return to Antar. She was talking about every decision they had ever made which had involved either one of them taking a step back from each other. It almost made him hope that there was a chance for him and Liz, that maybe she’d be willing to give them another shot.

He felt their connection stirring once more. He felt Liz seeping into his soul; he felt her familiar warmth as they stared at each other, her hand still on his cheek, soft and almost loving. He wanted to say something, something that told her that he understood what she was trying to say. He wanted to ask for that second chance but before he could say something, Liz’s features once more clouded over, shutting Max out.

Pulling her hand away, Liz took a step back, for a moment looking confused and unsure. She wasn’t sure why the thought of Max leaving for Antar worried her so much. She didn’t want to know why the thought of losing Max again hurt her so much.

Maybe I do know. She admitted to herself as she averted her eyes from Max’s. Biting her lip, she dug her hand into her pockets, fisting them. Maybe because I’m still in love with him.

The thought had her whirling away from Max, her hand blindly groping in her pockets for something to hold on to. Her hand clamped down on a long object. A bit puzzled, Liz pulled it out and then realized it was the key to the granolith. She had stuck it in her pocket and in her worry about Max going to Antar had forgotten about it.

Staring at it, her mind was once more drawn to the matter at hand. It occurred to her that this key might be the deciding factor in whether Max could – would – go back to Antar or not. It could literally unlock the secrets and answers they had been trying to uncover for so long. Liz bit her lip, her hand griping the key tightly. Did she want to use it? Did she want Max to use it? What if whatever this key helped to uncover was something that she didn’t want to hear? What if she, once again, would be forced to walk away from Max? From the other aliens?

Why do I feel so hesitant to hand it over? Liz asked herself. It’s not like Max and I are together anymore. Whatever they find out should not concern me anymore. But it did. Liz closed her eyes, willing back the sudden bout of tears. Oh god, it still did.

Holding the key, knowing that Max could be taken away from her again made her realize what she really wanted…who she really wanted. She might be hurt, confused, lost and reluctant to start things up with Max again but there was no doubt in her mind anymore that she had every intention to try to fix things between them. She still loved him and she was already considering… Liz mentally shook her head. No, not considering, had already decided that she wanted another shot with Max.

She felt torn between her desire to hide the key away somewhere where no one could access it and the rational part of her that knew that she had to hand it over. Slowly, hesitantly, she turned around and groped for the words.

“I-I think you guys will be needing this.” She said, holding out the key.

The others, who had so far been trying to prolong the inevitable for as long as possible, and were using that time to just spend time with their respective other now looked up at her and then the key in her hand.

For a moment, hesitation and doubt filtered in Max’s eyes as he looked at it. He wasn’t sure he wanted to know anything about the granolith or his planet. But Serena took the option away from him by taking the key from Liz and handing it to him.

“You know you have to.” She told him gently, almost as if reading her mind.

His hand closed around the crystal rod and he nodded, staring at it for a brief moment. Then he looked at his sister, Tess and Michael.

“I’m sorry…” he said to them, “But we have no choice. I have to know…”

Tess came up to him and laid a hand on his shoulder. “We understand, Max.” She replied. She shrugged as she continued, “We’ve always known that we can’t run away from our past. We’ve tried but it seems to keep coming back in our path. Maybe we’re meant to do this.” She faltered here, turning to look at Kyle with sorrow in her eyes. “But I kind of wish we didn’t have to…”

Silence fell for a second but Michael abruptly broke it by asking briskly, “How do we know that using the key won’t turn the granolith into a space ship or time machine?”

“We don’t.” Max replied. “Guess we’ll find out soon enough.” He turned to address Kyle, Alex, Maria and Liz. “You guys might want to clear out.”

“Oh no!” Maria shot out. “No way am I leaving! I’m staying right here with Michael, no matter what.”

“Me too.” Kyle added. He pulled Tess to his side, slipping his arm around her waist. “I’m not leaving Tess.”

“Same goes for us.” Alex answered for both himself and Liz.

“Alex,” Isabel began in worry, “We don’t know what will happen. What if we do something wrong and the…I don’t know! What if the pod chamber dissolves or something?”

Alex fixed her with a confident look. “I trust you. I know you won’t mess up.”

Max hesitated, glancing at Serena for approval. When she nodded imperceptibly, Max sighed. “Fine, let’s get this started.”

Leading the way for the others, Max crawled through the pod shells and to the room that held the granolith. Once inside, they all stared at the huge machine in awe. They didn’t know what to expect once they slipped the key in, they didn’t know what the purpose was yet all of them felt the power emitting from the granolith, almost as if it sensed that the key was near.

The humans stood off to the side, watching silently, not saying anything to the aliens for fear of disturbing something.

“Umm…not to sound discouraging or anything,” Kyle whispered to Liz. “But do they even know where that thing goes?”

Liz bit her lip, wondering the same thing. “Guess they’ll just have to search for the key hole.” She replied, watching Max intently as he and Michael stood staring at the granolith in contemplation.

Max had been worried too about how they would know where the key fit. But the moment he entered the chamber, he felt drawn to the granolith. Looking around at the others, he saw that they felt it too. Without a second thought, Max crouched down at the base of the granolith and waved his hand over the smooth base. Instantly a panel silently slid open, showing several buttons, lights and a slot which he was sure was where the key would fit.

He looked back up at Michael, Isabel and Tess and found them watching him with an odd look on their faces. Isabel was the first to speak.

“It’s like a distant memory…” She murmured. “Like I know what to do, what happens next.” She looked from the granolith to her brother, her eyes wide with surprise. “Like we’ve done this before.”

“Many times…” Michael added.

“We have.” Max murmured. “In a different life, on a different planet.” So saying, he slid the key into the slot and instantly a gentle humming filled the chamber. A bit startled Max hesitated before he let instinct take over once more and guide him. Without thinking about how he knew, his fingers slid effortlessly over the panel, punching buttons, changing lights. The humming increased to a gentle whirl and Max could faintly feel the floor rumble beneath his feet, almost as if some engines had started up.

Getting up, he backed away, waiting expectantly for something to happen. A minute passed and nothing did. Curious and anxious glances were exchanged when another minute passed and the granolith continued to whirl gently but showed no signs of doing anything else.

“Maybe you did something wrong?” Tess suggested after a moment.

But Michael shook his head, an echo of a memory playing in his head. He had watched Zan do the exact same thing many years ago. He remembered the effortless way he had commanded the granolith and he knew what Max had done should have brought the granolith to power.

“Whatever Max did was right.” Michael told Tess. He frowned as the memory became clearer. “I…Rath watched Zan do the exact thing the last time the granolith was used. It should have been at full power. Right now it’s just like it…woke up I guess.”

“Max, Kivar had the key designed. This is not the original.” Tess pointed out. “Maybe that’s why the granolith isn’t working. Maybe it needs the original?”

“It would have rejected the key otherwise.” Max replied. Furrowing his brow in thought, Max bit his lip. “No…something else is wrong.” He turned to address Serena for the first time. “What do you think? You used the granolith in the other timeline.”

Serena shook her head. “We did but we never used the key. Liz and I had to manipulate the granolith. We never found the key in the other timeline. Didn’t even know it existed until it was too late.” She look apologetic as she said, “I’m sorry. I don’t think I can help you with this.”

Isabel, who had been staring intently at the granolith up till now, suddenly snapped out of her daze and said in an almost emotionless voice, “I think I know.”

Everyone turned their attention towards Isabel, who was slowly walking towards the panel. She felt an innate tug from the granolith, like it was calling out to her. Like a wave cresting and washing over her she felt its power sweep over and above her, calling, coaxing, reminding. Crouching at its base she waved her hand over the closed panel and it once more slid open.

“Isabel, what are you doing?” Max asked. When Isabel didn’t answer but reached down to finger the key, Max made a move to stop her but Michael held him back, an odd look falling across his face.

“Maxwell, don’t!” he ordered. A memory, a knowledge flashed through him as he watched Isabel examine the panel. “Let her do what she’s doing. I think she knows how to work this thing.”

To Isabel it felt as if someone else was guiding her. A soft voice in her head telling her that it was only up to her. She wasn’t scared or nervous because the voice sounded so familiar. It had an almost calming effect on her. She knew that voice, of that she was sure. She wondered though whose it was. With the voice guiding her, Isabel bent down to place her hand on the flashing blue button in the panel. She let her finger press down on it hard until it stopped flashing. Then she placed her hand on the key and without a second thought let her energy flow into it.

She gasped in part pain and part surprise at the jolt she felt. She dimly heard Max and Alex call out her name in worry but she didn’t pay attention to it. She was being sucked in, sucked in the granolith, feeling her power run to it, powering it. It wasn’t painful anymore, but instead felt almost like drifting through soft clouds, hazy and dreamy.

Memories of a life she didn’t know passed before her and she saw them. She saw their legacy. She saw them grow, saw them fall in love. She saw the betrayal and their fall. When the last one of them fell, she felt a push and found herself back in the granolith chamber, her cheek wet with tears. She no longer felt the pull, no longer heard the voice. Whatever connection she had felt with the granolith was gone. Instead of humming, now it was beginning to glow a bright blue.

She stood up, her legs shaky and instantly Max and Alex were at her side.

“I’m all right.” She waved them aside.

“What happened?” Max demanded. “Are you hurt?”

Isabel shook her head, feeling not hurt but at peace. “No.” she replied. Then with a small smile, “No, far from it. How long was I out?”

“Out?” Max frowned. “You weren’t. You just touched the key a few seconds ago and you let out a small sound before standing back up.”

That shocked Isabel. How could that be? She was sure that at least a few minutes must have passed for her to see all those images, feel all that she felt. How could it be just seconds?

“What did you do, Iz?” Michael asked her, watching the granolith humming to life, this time the light growing brighter and brighter.

“How did you know what to do?” Tess asked.

Isabel shook her head, still a bit confused. “I-I don’t know.” She admitted. “I just…knew.”

“Well, whatever you did, it seemed to have worked.” Serena pointed out. They all turned to look at the granolith which was now glowing brightly. It was so bright that it almost hurt their eyes and made them want to turn away.

“So, now that it’s working…what do you do next?” Maria asked coming to stand next to Michael.

“That remains to be seen.” Max replied.

Without warning, the blue light pulsed before shooting like a beam straight out. Everyone closed their eyes, blinded by the light. When they opened their eyes there was an image hovering inside the granolith.

“Umm…guys…” Kyle said hesitantly. “There’s some one in that contraption!”

For a moment everyone could only stare at the image. It looked human but it…wasn’t. It had strange, dark eyes and it seemed to have a slim, long body.

“Greetings!” The image said with a friendly smile. “I have waited long years for the granolith to be re-activated. It is a pleasure to see you alive and well, your Majesty.”

“What-who are you?” Max asked, taken aback.

The image looked a bit apologetic as he replied, “Forgive me. You must not recognize me in this form. I am Larek of Antar. I believe we’ve met on Earth while I was occupying the body of a human by the name of Brody Davis.”

“You’re Larek?” Michael demanded.

Larek bowed low to Michael and nodded. He glanced around the room, paying close attention to the humans and then to Serena. When he saw her, he smiled widely in pleasure.

“Serena! What a pleasure to see you again. It’s good to know you’re alive and well.” He cried out.

Serena was taken aback by the familiarity and stammered nervously, “Um…I don’t believe I remember you.”

Larek smiled briefly. “That’s perfectly alright. In this timeline we have yet to meet. But I know you – or rather I know of you.”

“What’s going on here?” Max asked, still confused and a bit distrustful. “We weren’t sure what we were expecting but clearly I didn’t see the granolith as a…communication device of sorts.”

“It is many things, your highness.” Larek answered.

“Don’t call me that.” Max said abruptly, looking uncomfortable by the address. “I’m no one’s king. My name is Max Evans…not Zan of Antar.”

Larek paused, as if assessing him and then he nodded a bit reluctantly. “As you wish…Max.” Looking at the other astonished people in the room, Larek said, “I’m sure you have questions you’d like to be answered.”

“Yes, we do.” Tess spoke up, stepping forward. She looked at Larek suspiciously. “If you really are Larek then why didn’t you tell us anything about the granolith or about Kivar when we met at the summit? You could have helped us out! You obviously know things…yet you didn’t say anything. Why?”

This time Larek looked a bit amused. “Are you so sure that I didn’t tell you anything?” He asked. Tilting his head to the side speculatively he spoke, almost to himself. “But maybe you are right…maybe I was too subtle.”

“What do you mean?” Max asked, not understanding what Larek was talking about.

“In case you forgot, I did try to warn you of the consequences of handing Kivar the granolith at the summit.” Larek pointed out.

“We knew the danger in doing that without your help.” Michael sneered. “Liz here warned Max before he left for the summit.”

Max caught Liz’s eye at that and a look passed between them, both recalling that conversation. Now both of them held on to that moment as one when things between them had been comparatively okay.

Larek, too, turned to give Liz an impressed look. “A wise piece of advise.” He stated. “But then from what I know, Liz Parker has hardly ever done anything unwise.” He gave her a smile and then looked back at Max. “But I’m not just talking about that. I did try to offer my services to you that day. I was hoping you’d be able to read into my meaning.”

“You did no such thing.” Tess argued. “I was there and I recall no such thing.”

“Like I said,” Larek said apologetically. “Maybe I was being too subtle. I couldn’t very well come out and say anything there though for fear of Nicholas or his spies over hearing us. I couldn’t take the chance. So I did what I thought would be best. I took control of a person you knew and could easily contact if you ever needed me. I told you that I was once a good friend to you. That is still true. I was hoping that you’d take that admission and try to contact me again. You never did.”

“We didn’t know how.” Isabel said. “We didn’t know the first thing about inter planetary communication. Or how to work the orbs or use the granolith.”

Larek turned his attention to Isabel and for the first time a pleased look came into his eyes as he looked at her. “You always knew, my princess.”

Isabel looked surprised by that news for a moment but then a slight understanding lit her eyes and seeing it Larek nodded. “I see you recall something.”

“Some…” Isabel nodded, trying hard to remember. Her eyes grew distant as she thought back, putting the pieces together. Suddenly, her eyes snapped back into focus and she blurted out, “It was always me, wasn’t it?” she asked Larek.

Larek smiled and nodded. “Yes, it was always you. You knew all along, you just had to connect to the memory.”

“Do you mind spelling it out for those of us who don’t know?” Michael asked dryly.

Instead of answering, Larek asked, “Did you notice that the granolith didn’t work until Princess Vilandra—” He paused, shooting Isabel a quick look and amended, “Isabel…added her energy to it?”

“Yes.” Max answered, his brow furrowing as he thought about it. “I didn’t think too much of it at first. I thought it was because she knew what to do.”

“That is partially true.” Larek agreed. “She did know what to do. But,” He continued. “Had any of you done the exact same thing, it wouldn’t have worked.”

“I’m not sure I understand.” Max answered.

“It was me, Max.” Isabel answered. She looked at him in part astonishment and part understanding. “It was always me. I was the one who the granolith was left to. I’m the only one who it is designed to respond to.”

“What?” Tess cried out in shock. “But how’s that possible? The Royal Four…”

“The Royal Four existed on Antar.” Isabel said, cutting Tess off. “Not here. At least in some aspect of our lives, the Royal Four doesn’t matter anymore.” She looked back up at the granolith and reached out to touch its walls gently and when the granolith’s light pulsed gently in response to her touch, Isabel smiled. “In a way it’s given us our freedom.”

“Are you saying that you’re the granolith’s protector of some sorts?” Michael asked.

“Not protector.” Isabel mused. “It was all of ours responsibility to make sure the granolith is safe but it’s mine to control…”

“Larek?” Max asked, looking for confirmation.

“What she says is true.” Larek told them. “If you stop and think, you’ll see the signs. It was Isabel who found the granolith. It was Isabel who could operate it. The granolith needed her energy to activate. And not to forget, everyone was drawn to her. The parasites, Nicholas, Vanessa Whitaker and Kivar…they all felt drawn to Isabel. They might not have known it, they might not have understood why but they came after her. Didn’t you ever wonder why?”

“It was because Isabel was the key to controlling the granolith.” Tess murmured finally understanding. “But why her?” She stopped; looking embarrassed and gave Isabel an apologetic look. “That’s not meant to be rude or anything but I’m just curious. Why place such power in just one hand? Wouldn’t it be safer to spread the power among the four of us?”

“Maybe. Maybe not.” Larek replied. “When the granolith was on Antar and Zan and the true Royal Four were alive, the granolith answered to all four of them. Only together could the granolith be activated. It worked well there, this pattern or strategy.”

“But then why change things?” Maria asked, speaking up for the first time. They all had been listening but didn’t want to interrupt. But the story had sucked them all in, and roused their interest and curiosity.

“Because it was a safer option to give one power than all.” Larek answered. “When we sent you down here, we didn’t know if you would be together here or not. We couldn’t be sure that all of you would even survive. If one of you died in the trip here…the granolith would have been lost to us forever. It was risky but at the same time safer to place power in one person’s hand.”

“But why me?” Isabel asked. “Why not Michael or Tess? Why not Max? He was king.”

“Zan would have been too obvious.” Larek replied. “He was the most open to be targeted and the most obvious choice. Kivar would know that. Even now, when he felt the pull towards you, Isabel, he still went after Max through Tess because he thought Max held the power. Tess also would have been dangerous to pick because she was essentially queen and again open as a target.”

“What about Michael?” Max asked.

This time Larek chuckled. “Michael barely had control over his powers. Giving him the power to control the granolith would have been disastrous!” He shot Michael a faintly amused look. “I’m sorry to say this but even on Antar he was hot headed. He didn’t stop to think. He just acted.”

“That left only Isabel.” Max sighed, still confused. “But if our enemies knew all of this, wouldn’t they have known Isabel was the only one left?”

Larek shook his head. “No. To the enemies Rath was a great warrior. Fearless and brilliant. But to those who knew him, like Zan and the royal family, he tested their patience with his impulsiveness. Besides, no one would suspect Isabel to be handed the power since she was believed to have betrayed the family. Even sending here her caused distress among some.”

“Did I?” Isabel asked thickly, remembering Whitaker’s words. “Did I do something like that?”

Larek didn’t hesitate when he shook his head. “No. You’d never do something like that.” He said vehemently. “Kivar tricked you, made you believe you were helping to end the war when in actuality he used you to destroy your family. You fought him when you found out. You did whatever you could to warn your brother but by then it was too late. He was dead.”

Tears tickled down Isabel’s face as she wept with relief and sorrow over what had been. For so long she had lived with the inner turmoil that Vilandra had led the family to their doom. She had been torn with guilt and fear of doing the same thing. To know that she had nothing to be sorry for, the relief was overwhelming. Alex slipped his arm around her and gently squeezed.

“None of us doubted you.” He whispered to her. “We all trust you with our lives.”

“I know.” Isabel whispered, wiping her tears. “It’s just a huge relief to know what happened, to be sure of it finally.”

Larek smiled fondly at her. “There couldn’t have been a better person we could have handed the granolith to than you. You should trust in that. It was one of our riskiest and most controversial moves, to place power in one person’s hand but I’m glad to know it worked.”

“What does the granolith do, anyway?” Liz asked now. “Why is it so sought after?”

“Because in essence one who controls the granolith controls everything.” Larek replied.

“We got that much.” Max replied. “But what does that mean? Everything?”

“It’s a space ship and a time machine.” Alex put in. “That much we know. But is that it? It can’t be.”

“No it can’t.” Larek agreed. “It’s much, much more. “Don’t confuse it as a simple time machine.” He warned gravely. “With one touch, the one who owns the granolith has the power to change time itself without ever leaving to alter time like Max did once. With only a thought the granolith can change any event, any situation. The person who controls the granolith only has to think of what he or she wants changed and to what they want to change it to. And the job’s done.”

“That’s one scary weapon.” Kyle shuddered, pulling Tess closer.

Larek nodded. “Have no doubt that it’s the most dangerous one. It could forever alter time.”

“Has it ever been done?” Michael asked. “Time changed with the granolith?”

“Aside from Serena and Max’s attempt…yes once.” Larek replied. “But only when there was no way and only when the survival of the planet was in jeopardy. It happened centuries ago when another alien force tried to take over the galaxy. They destroyed everything. Planets, stars, and would have gone on to other galaxies as well. It was one of the most horrific and bloody battles ever witnessed by any planet. The granolith was used then to change time, to make sure the fleet was finished off before it even attempted such a war.”

“If time was changed, then how do you know this?” Max asked.

“Because the granolith is not affected by any changes in time. It has records of every time changes, every alternate timeline. It’s like the most extensive history book there is.” Larek told him. “That just makes it more dangerous. But it’s not just a time machine or a book. It holds power. Immeasurable power.”

“What kind of power?”

“The power held by the people of Antar. The granolith is almost like a…storage, I guess you can say. It holds the power of people gone, people yet to be born and of people that exist. It holds their essence. When someone dies, their powers are captured by the granolith which holds them until they can be passed on to the appropriate person. When that person is born, the granolith passes on the essence to them. In a way it’s a cycle of re-birth. And it stays connected to the powers of the people still living, like a mother with a child. And if someone ever commits some sort of crime that has to be punished, the holder of the granolith, almost always the king, has the power to take away the power from the criminal, which is then stored in the granolith until released. To Antarians, having no power is a punishment worse than death. They need the power; they don’t know life without it.”

“So who ever controls the granolith has access to all that power?” Maria asked. When Larek replied in the affirmative she let out a deep breath. “No wonder Kivar wanted it. He could control the entire world with it.”

“That’s a lot of power to be in control of.” Isabel said, suddenly nervous. “What if I mess up or loose control? What if I unleash it accidentally?”

“You have no need to worry.” Larek assured her. “Not only will your family help keep you centered and help you in controlling it but your soul mate, your partner will help balance things out.”

At the word soul mate, Isabel automatically looked at Alex but then she remembered the dreams she had a year before alarmed and horrified, she turned to look at Michael and saw him come to the same conclusion. His panicked gaze met hers and Isabel shook her head wildly.

“I can’t…Michael and me…I won’t!” Isabel cried.

Larek smiled and instead of saying anything regarding her words, he said instead, “I think there’s something your mother, her Highness Kayeana, would like to tell you.”

“Mom?” Isabel asked, wide eyed and suddenly teary.

Larek’s image flickered and was enveloped in a bright blue light. When the light dissipated a moment later, in his place was their mother’s image.

“Mom…” Max whispered, awed and uncertain.

Their mother smiled down at them. “My children…” She whispered. “It’s been so long.” She turned to encompass Tess and Michael in her words as well when she said, “It’s an overwhelming feeling to see you all standing here together…alive.”

“It’s-it’s great to see you again.” Isabel said, stepping closer, reaching out to touch her image before snatching her hand away, almost as if uncertain.

Her mother smiled at the reaction. “I’ve missed you most…Isabel.” She said her name hesitantly, almost as if testing the word. “It suits you, the name I mean.”

“I think so too.” Isabel replied softly. “I’m not Vilandra.” She added, almost as if defying her to state otherwise.

“No, you’re not.” There was regret in Kayeana’s voice and at the same time acceptance and pleasure. “But you’re still my daughter; you’re still a part of me. You both are.” She said, looking at Max as well. She glanced at Tess and Michael and smiled at them. “You two were as close to my daughter and son as these two were – are. I’ve missed both of you as well, much more than you’ll ever know.”

“I thought there was no one for me there.” Michael said, surprising everyone, even himself with the admission.

Kayeana smiled gently at him and shook her head. “Oh no, Michael. That isn’t so. There are many for you here, just as there is family for you there on Earth as well.” So saying, she gave Maria an appraising look. Maria returned the look, standing defiantly with her arms slung possessively around Michael’s waist. Kayeana’s smile grew broader and more amused as she said, “I see you’ve chosen well, Michael. She’ll keep you in line.” She turned to look at Kyle, Alex and Liz all in turn and then finally nodded to herself. “You’ve all chosen well.”

“But…I thought there was a destiny…” Tess asked.

Kayeana nodded. “There is.”

“But then why…how…?” Max trailed off, unsure what to say.

“There is a destiny, Max.” His mother told him gently. “Only it is for you to decide. You chose your own destiny.”

At this four shocked faces gaped at her. “But what about the message you sent us through the orbs? And the book?” Isabel asked not daring to hope.

“The message was recorded before you were sent down to Earth. I admit I hoped that when found, the message might revive the feelings and connections you had for each other back on Antar. You were all so in love here that I didn’t stop to think that you might not feel the same way once you were…reborn I guess.” Kayeana looked apologetic as she said, “It was foolish of me and wrong to press onto you such a past….”

“What about the book?” Max asked. “The pictures, the messages…. What of those?”

“In part that was to displace any doubt you might have had about your heritage and your past. It wasn’t meant for it to be a guide on how to live your life here.” Their mother told them. “But also it was meant to mislead and misguide any one of our enemies who might have come across the book. Like Kivar did.”

“Then there is no destiny book?” Alex asked, disappointed that he had been wrong.

“Not a destiny book exactly, for I just told you that destiny is what you make of it.” Kayeana replied carefully. “But there is another book. One that you can use to guide you, not only in using the granolith should you ever wish to do so – though I hope not – and the book will allow you understand and learn about your past selves better.”

“So, there is a book?” Kyle asked in surprise.

“Yes.”

“Where?” Max asked.

“Hidden in a secret panel in this very chamber.” Kayeana answered. “We didn’t want it to be easy to find…you know just in case.”

“How do we open the panel?” Michael asked.

“Always the impatient one.” Kayeana chided lightly. “Use the small red button at the top left on the panel at the base of the granolith. That will bring about a symbol…the one that stands for our planet and the Whirlwind Galaxy. Insert the key in the center and the panel will open.”

She paused now, looking a bit sad as she looked down at all of them. “You have managed to do what we had hoped for when we sent you down here and that is bringing Kivar to his downfall. Antar is free once more. I know though that this causes problems for you. I’m sorry that you have to be in such a position. You don’t have to return though if you don’t want to.”

“Who will take care of Antar?” Max asked. “Can you?”

His mother shook her head. “I can not. I am too old to. I might die before I have the chance to handle everything because this will take many, many years. That will only add more turmoil. The only other person to take the throne is my sister’s son but he is as yet too young to even comprehend such a task.”

“Then…” Max faltered a bit. “Then I guess I have to return…”

But to his surprise Kayeana shook her head. “No, you don’t have to.”

“There may be no other way.” Max argued.

“There are always other ways.” Kayeana answered with a sad smile. “I found a way to bring my children back, for them to fight for our freedom once more. Now you have to find a way to make sure that Antar’s freedom doesn’t mean your surrender.”

“How can I do that?” Max asked, his voice suddenly pleading. “Help me, mother. Help me figure it out.”

But she shook her head. “I can not. This is for you to figure out. Your final…test.”

“Kayeana…” Liz suddenly spoke up. “Does the heir to the throne have to be of royal blood?”

Kayeana looked at Liz in mild confusion. “What are you suggesting?”

“That maybe someone else, chosen my you or Max could rule over Antar.” Liz replied, thinking fast and hard for any possibility.

Kayeana’s eyes turned cold as she said in a low, angry tone. “Antar has forever been ruled by the royals. There has never been any other ruler on the throne except for us. If you’re suggesting that we abdicate the throne to another family then I would advise you to stop right there.”

Liz was a bit unnerved but she stood firm. “I’m not talking about abdication. What I mean is…maybe power could be handed to someone else who would rule until your sister’s son, the next heir is old enough to take over.”

Though Kayeana still looked at Liz doubtfully, Max asked hopefully, “Like maybe a keeper of the throne? He could be guided by my mother…”

“Exactly.” Liz answered. She turned to Kayeana. “At least that way some of your problems are answered.”

Kayeana was now looking thoughtfully at Liz and for a long moment she didn’t speak. Finally she nodded. “It does have potential…” She paused. “But who can we trust with such a responsibility.”

“Who did you and Zan trust?” Liz asked, already knowing the answer.

Kayeana didn’t hesitate to confirm Liz’s suspicion as she answered, “Larek.”

Liz smiled then. “Then who better than Larek?”

Kayeana gave Liz and amused and impressed look. “So it would seem.” She turned to Max. “Do you agree?”

“Why wouldn’t I?” Max asked, floored by the idea. He turned to give Liz a look filled with love and gratitude. “It’s perfect.”

“Then I guess I’ve got things to handle here.” Kayeana smiled fondly at them though her eyes shined with sadness. “It also means I won’t be seeing you any time soon.”

“Oh mother!” Isabel cried. “I wish I knew you.”

“I wish that too.” Tess whispered.

Kayeana smiled at both girls and said, “You did.” She turned to Alex and Kyle and gave them a mock stern glare. “Take care of these two for me. Otherwise I will make you very sorry.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Kyle answered, a bit nervous.

Kayeana turned her attention to Michael and Max and said, “You make me so proud. Be safe and don’t run from what your heart tells you.” She paused, glancing at Liz as she said so. Liz met her gaze and nodded imperceptibly.

“This is good bye then…” she said. “Larek is coming in just a moment. He’s still in shock by the news.” Kayeana laughed. Then she raised her hand in a half wave and a tear slipped down her cheek. “Be safe and remember that I love you.”

With those words, the light flashed and she was gone. In her place was Larek once more. For a moment there was silence and then Larek burst out, almost in panic. “I’m not up to this! I can’t take the throne. I’m not of royal blood. I’ve been your best friend Zan but I’m no king!”

Max gave him an amused look. “Larek, I believe in you. I have full faith that you’ll carry this off. Besides, my mother will be there guiding you.”

“But, your Majesty!” Larek began but Max shook his head.

“That’s your title now.” When Larek didn’t say anything, Max said, “Larek, there is no one else I or my mother trusts more than you. Zan, I know, trusted you. You’ll do fine.”

“Larek…we have faith.” Isabel reassured him.

Larek didn’t say anything for a moment, looking utterly torn. But then he nodded and sighed. “Very well.” He then bowed in reverence and said, “I am honored by the trust placed in me.”

“Well, you earned it.” Max smiled.

“I assure you that I will not misplace the trust you have placed in me.” Larek said again, still overwhelmed and shocked. “If there is ever anything I can do…”

Serena cleared her throat and placed a light hand on Max’s shoulder. Max turned to look at her and understood at once. Turning back to Larek, he said, “Well, I think there is something you can help us with.”

“Name it.”

“Serena?” Max said, turning to look at her and giving her the go ahead.

She flashed him a grateful smile and spoke, “I was wondering…about myself. I’m not from this timeline. I don’t know if and when I’ll cease to exist or if I’ll stay here…” She paused, carefully wording her thoughts. She hadn’t let on till now how much it bothered her not knowing what was going to happen to her but she hoped that now Larek could answer it for her. “What I’m trying to say is…what about me? What will happen to me?”

“That depends on you.” Larek answered.

Serena looked at him in surprise. “What do you mean?” She asked.

“Well, according to theory you’re going to fade away once your job in this timeline has been finished, which should be soon. But,” Larek added, seeing her fear, “There is one more thing that you can do, if you want to stay here.”

“I do!” Serena burst out. She gripped her hands tightly. “I mean, to me this is my reality now…I don’t want to die.”

“And you shan’t.” Larek promised. “But there is another version of you in this timeline. Not on Earth but on Antar. It might cause rifts in the timeline. It has to be fixed.”

“How?” Serena asked.

Larek hesitated before answering, taking the time to think and evaluate the situation. “By combining both timelines.” Larek finally replied.

“Can you do that?” Liz gasped.

“My dear, with the granolith at your disposable you can do anything.” Larek replied with a faintly amused smile.

“But how will that work?” Isabel asked.

“By simply concentrating on Serena, the timelines for her only will be merged. That way she will retain memories from both timelines, recall everything she has ever learned in each one but still remaining the same.” Larek answered. “It might be difficult at first for you to try and separate both memories but once you do I don’t think there should be any problem.”

“The best of both worlds.” Alex grinned.

“In a way.” Larek nodded. Now he turned to look at Liz and Alex speculatively. “The same can be done for you both as well.”

“Us?” Alex squawked. “Why?”

“It would make it easier for you to return to your normal lives with the timelines merged.” Larek replied. He gave them a knowing look. “You can’t tell me that you haven’t wondered how you’ll pull it off. Obviously both of you are not going to continue to live like this.”

“No, we’re not.” Liz replied. She shook her head, still confused. “But how will merging timelines help us?”

“It’s going to be a different merger than one for Serena.” Larek told them thoughtfully. “This one will not affect anyone directly involved in your lives. That includes all nine of you and your parents and the sheriff. But by merging the timeline, the other people in town will simply acquire the memories of the other timeline. For them, that would have been their past now.”

“Wouldn’t it change things for them?” Tess asked, nervously. “We are playing with time here.”

“It wouldn’t change things on a huge extent. In both timelines, up till this point I doubt the outsiders’ interaction with you all will have changed anything for them, in this or the other timeline.” Larek assured them. “Except for a few minor details, nothing much will change for them except for the fact that Liz and Alex did not die. Once the timelines are merged though, their future is yet to be determined. It can flow like it did in either timeline or may take a different course. That will be up to them and their actions.”

“What about us?” Liz asked.

“You will remember this. You will retain your memory for only this timeline. Merging it with the other, like with Serena is not only unnecessary but risky.” Larek told them. “Your parents, though, will have to be told about everything though.”

“Everything?” Max asked nervously.

“Everything.” Larek affirmed. “Max, trust them. You might be surprised.”

Max nodded hesitantly and then shot Isabel a smile. “I guess you’re going to get your wish.”

“How will we know how to change the timeline?” Michael asked. “I mean, one mistake and everything could be seriously fucked up.”

“The book her Majesty Kayeana mentioned has all the details.” Larek assured them. “Not only will it guide you but the granolith will too.”

“The book…” Michael muttered. “Stay here while I get it. You know just in case it’s another decoy or something…”

“I assure you-“

“Stop assuring and just wait!” Michael snapped, a bit unnerved by all that he had seen and heard. Without another word he pulled out the key and though he expected the granolith to shut down, much to everyone’s surprise, it didn’t.

“It won’t shut down.” Larek told them. “I’m making sure of it. Now that you’ve passed the throne to me, I have a part connection to it. Not as strong as you but enough.”

Nodding, Michael pressed the button Kayeana had told them about. Sure enough the symbol appeared on a wall on the other side. Michael went to it and inserted the key in the center. A panel just below the symbol slid open and Michael reach inside to pull out the book.

Maria came up to him and gently took the book from him before he could argue. “Does this come with baby pictures?” She asked with a straight face to Larek.

Kyle gave a muffled laugh but was silenced quickly by a jab in the side from Tess.

“Use the book well. It’s not meant to lead your life for you but to guide you and teach you about the past.” Larek told them. He hesitated, looking a bit remorseful. “For the moment, it looks like the time has come for me to leave you. I don’t know when and if we’ll ever meet again but know that I am always sat your service if you need me.”

“You’ve been a great help to us, Larek.” Max replied.

“You know how to contact me should you ever need to.” Larek said.

“Let’s hope not, considering the circumstances we’ve met you so far.” Kyle joked.

Larek just smiled. “In that case, I hope not too.” Then with a last bow, he said, “Gaurd the book and the granolith and be safe. Your destiny is in your hands….”

The light pulsed brightly once more and the granolith hummed loudly. Everyone closed their eyes against the light. With a loud crack and snap the chamber settled once more. Opening their eyes, they saw Larek’s image gone.

“Well…” Isabel said after a moment’s silence. “That’s the end of it.”

“About time too.” Maria muttered.

“Guys, we do have one last thing to do.” Tess reminded them. “The timelines.”

“We’ll get to it soon.” Max replied. He squeezed Serena’s hand briefly and said, “Very soon.”

“Can we get out of here now?” Kyle asked, shifting from foot to foot. “I need to feel the air again. It feels like I’ve been in here forever.”

Murmurs of agreement went through the group. As they all filtered out, Alex gestured to the book Michael now held and asked, “Please tell me it’s in English. I so don’t want to do another translation!”

Michael opened the book and scanned it. Then he shot Alex a grin. “You’re safe.”

Alex let out a whoop of pleasure that had everyone laughing.

Max smiled at them as he watched them head out. He waited a moment though, wanting to savor this moment, wanting to savor his victory and freedom, this turning point. Max paused to give the granolith one last look. Liz saw him and stopped besides him, for some reason wanting this moment with him.

For a silent minute they stood side by side, both comfortable in each other’s presence after a long while. Then Liz turned to look at Max, an odd lump in her throat.

“I’m glad you’re staying.” She said to him softly.

Max looked at her in surprise and pleasure. He wasn’t sure what she meant by it but the look in her eyes had hope flaring in him. “Really?” he asked.

“Really.”

Liz smiled at him then she did something that surprised both of them. She leaned in and placed a feather soft kiss on his lips. She pulled away before he could return it, her eyes twinkling, her lips smiling.

“Really glad.” She said again softly as she gave him another smile and then turned and headed out after the others, leaving Max gaping after her, breathless and raging with hope.

Shadows -- Part 98

Post by FallenMagic »

Part 98

~ One week later ~

“Call me crazy but I actually missed working at the Crashdown.” Liz sighed happily as she leaned against the counter and glanced at the busy scene before her.

“Okay, you’re crazy.” Maria answered cheerfully. Then, rolling her eyes, Maria propped her chin on her hand as she gazed at the café. “But then I’ve been working double duty here for the past few months. I may be biased.”

Liz turned to her friend and put her hand over hers, squeezing gently. “Thank you, Maria, for helping out my parents.”

Maria looked a bit surprised but then she waved the comment aside. “You know I’d do just about anything for your parents. Besides, it gave me an excuse to be here, to be close to you in a way.” Shrugging, Maria straightened and glanced towards the kitchen. “There’s my order.” She said when she saw Michael signal to her. She nodded her head in faint amusement towards Liz’s father who was manning the cash register. “Better get back to work. Your dad has been watching us like a hawk all week.”

“I think it’s more because he’s wondering if I’m going to grow a pair of antennas soon.” Liz replied with a roll of her eyes.

“He’s still not really gotten over the shock?” Maria asked, remembering how Liz’s parents had been flabbergasted when they had been told about Max, Antar and Alex and Liz’s supposed ‘deaths’.

Her own mom’s reaction had shocked Maria. She had expected hysterics or some initial denial or shock. Instead, Amy had just nodded and warned Michael that if he ever let Maria go off on her own out of Roswell and get hurt again then she was going to make sure he never lived to see another sunrise. Needless to say Michael was left speechless and more than a little scared. Maria had found it all very amusing.

“They both haven’t.” Liz answered, pulling Maria out of her thoughts. “It’s gotten better over the week but it’s still going to take them a while to get used to the fact that I’m alive and have powers.” Then she smiled. “And I don’t blame them.”

“They love you, Liz.” Maria reminded her. “No matter what, they’ll still be here for you, regardless of who you are.”

“I know.” Liz nodded. “That’s why this is a lot less harder than I imagined it would be.”

“Maria, I’m not re-heating your order!” Michael bellowed from the window.

Maria rolled her eyes and pushed away from the counter. “Duty calls.” She sighed. She turned to give a glowering Michael a quick look before grinning. “God, I love him!”

Liz watched her go pick up her order, yelling at Michael all the way. To anyone else it would have seemed like a heated argument but Liz caught the amused glint in both their eyes. Liz couldn’t help grinning. Everything was as it should be.

“It’s nice to see you smile again.”

Liz whirled at the sound of Serena’s voice and pulled her into a hug. “Serena! What are you doing here?” Liz asked. “I thought you had some things to take care of in Las Cruses?”

Serena returned the hug before pulling away. “I was done sooner than I expected so I decided to head on back.” Serena explained.

“How’s your…” Liz gestured to her own head. “You know…how are you handling the different timelines in your head?”

“It gets confusing.” Serena replied with a slight smile. “But I’m adjusting. It’s just been four days since we merged the timelines. It’s going to take some time for me to separate everything in my head.”

“Do you remember all of the stuff from the other timeline?” Liz asked.

“Most of it.” Serena nodded. “Though I’m sure there’s still a lot I don’t know or can’t remember.”

“I’m just glad everything worked the way it was supposed to.” Liz replied. “I was nervous about something going wrong.”

“Me too.” Serena admitted. “But then I trusted you guys to do it right.”

Liz laughed. “You’re a brave person. I was barely holding it together when Max merged the timelines for Alex and me.”

“And look how that turned out.” Serena grinned, looking around. “Everything is normal once more.”

“Well, as normal as normal can be for us.” Liz amended for her.

“True.” Serena laughed. Her eyes roamed about the room and finally settled on Kyle and Tess walking through the door. “Kyle and Tess just came in!” She told Liz, smiling as she raised a hand to get their attention.

Kyle and Tess spotted them both and headed over.

“Hey!” Tess greeted. “When did you get back?”

“Today.” Serena replied. She eyed the way Kyle was holding on to Tess and asked, “So, you two still going at it?”

“It’s still pretty new.” Kyle reminded.

“You guys sure are making up for lost time.” Liz smiled. “You’ve been glued to the hip for a week now.”

Kyle scratched his ear in embarrassment but grinned anyway. “Can’t let this one get away.”

Tess leaned in to give him a kiss. “I’m not going anywhere, Buddha boy.” She replied. Then she gave him a look and glanced at Liz. Kyle understood at once and grabbed Serena’s arm.

“Serena, how about we sit down and catch up?” Kyle asked, dragging her to a table.

Serena looked a bit confused but nodded hesitantly. “Okay…”

Liz watched in part amusement and part confusion at Kyle’s odd behavior. Then she realized that Tess was still standing there, looking slightly uncomfortable but determined.

“Liz, can we talk for a minute?” Tess asked hesitantly.

Frowning slightly, Liz nodded. “Sure, Tess.”

“Privately?” Tess pleaded.

Nodding slowly, Liz led the way to the back room and gestured Tess to the sofa. Tess sat down, her face nervous.

“Just give me a second, okay?” Liz asked. “Let me just tell me dad I’m going on a break.”

“Sure.” Tess answered, privately relieved to have some time to think about what she wanted to say.

When Liz came back, Tess was nervously twisting the necklace she wore. Liz watched her in speculative silence as she came to sit down next to Tess. Liz wondered what Tess could want from her. She and Tess had managed to form a hesitant truce over the last week but to be truthful, neither one of them were very comfortable around each other. It would still take a long time for them to even remotely approach the term friends.

Tess looked up abruptly when Liz came back in and sat down next to her. Tess could tell that even Liz was a bit nervous and unsure as to what this was about. The way Liz kept pushing back her hair and gnawing her lip were proof of that. Not intending to drag this out any longer, Tess searched for a place to start.

Shooting Liz a hesitant and friendly smile, Tess asked, “How are you doing?”

“I’m doing pretty okay, everything considering.” Liz replied with a lift of her shoulder.

“That’s good to hear.” Tess answered. An uncomfortable silence fell once more between the two girls as both of them searched for something to say. Tess knew that she was the one who had wanted to talk but now that she was sitting across from Liz, she wasn’t sure how to broach the subject. Stalling, Tess’s gaze wandered towards the kitchen where she saw Michael working at the grill. A smile was on her lips when she turned back to Liz.

“Michael’s planning to ask Maria out on this romantic date he’s got planned.” Tess told Liz.

Liz looked at Tess in amused shock. “Really? I didn’t think he was a romantic date sort of guy.”

Tess chuckled. “Neither did I but apparently he is making an effort.” She leaned forward furtively and said in a low voice, “He’s even enlisted Isabel’s help!”

A choked laugh slipped from Liz’s lips. “He must be serious then!” Liz leaned back and glanced over at the kitchen thoughtfully. “You know, I don’t think Michael and Maria have ever gone out on an actual date before.”

“Really?” Tess said in surprise. “I thought they had been dating long before I came to Roswell.”

“It was an on-again, off-again thing. Mostly it was an off-again thing.” Liz told Tess with am amused smile. “I think the only time they attempted a date was when they double dated with me and Max. Even then, things didn’t go smoothly. Maria kept finding fault in everything Michael did and compared him to Max, who she insisted was the ‘perfect’ date. Michael didn’t take too well to being compared to Max.” Liz smiled fondly at the memory, her eyes distant as she thought about it. She missed the observing look Tess gave her as she continued, “Max was a perfect date…” Liz mused. “He knew how to make me feel special, wanted, loved…” Liz trailed off when she realized quite suddenly where this was going.

Biting her lip, Liz sat up straight, clenching her hand into fists in her lap. She stared down at them instead of Tess, embarrassed that she had said so much. But at the same time, feeling a bit sad when she thought about all that she had shared with Max. Tess saw the sadness in her stance and laid a hand lightly on Liz’s arm, silently grateful for the opening Liz had inadvertently given to her.

“It can still be all those things.” Tess told her gently. “All you have to do is let him.” When Liz didn’t answer, Tess asked softly, almost sadly, “Liz, why are you running from him?”

“I’m not running from anyone.” Liz denied, knowing full well that it was a lie and that Tess knew it.

“Aren’t you?” Tess countered. “Have you even talked to Max?”

Liz bit her lip and pushed herself off the sofa and stood up. She wrapped her arms around herself almost as if to deflect Tess’s questions, to avoid answering them but in her silence Tess already read the answer.

“I got the impression that you still loved him, that you wanted to change things.” Tess stated.

“I do and I want to…” Liz cried out, running a frustrated hand through her hair. “But it’s not that simple!”

“It is.” Tess replied.

Liz whirled on her, her eyes wide, confused and upset. “Where do I even begin?” Liz asked. “How do I even start things off with him?”

“From wherever you want.” Tess told her. She got to her feet as well and came to stand next to Liz. “It’s not as hard as it seems, Liz.”

“Oh yes it is.” Liz laughed bitterly. “How would you know though? You’ve already got Kyle!”

“You think that was easy for me?” Tess asked incredulously. “Kyle and I – we’ve had our share of problems. It took both of us a really long time to be able to even admit to each other that we liked each other. We simply didn’t have the chance because Ava made sure of it!” Tess’s voice turned soft and almost pleading. “You and Max don’t have anything or anyone stopping you anymore. You both know what you feel for one another whether you admit it to yourself or not.”

Liz bit her lip, shaking her head. “We’ve got a lot of things standing in our way.”

Sighing in frustration, Tess grabbed Liz’s arm and made her look at her. “That’s what I’m trying to tell you. You don’t! The only thing that is standing in the way is you, Liz! So you’ve got problems. Talk them out, work through them!”

Liz raised her gaze from the perusal of the floor to look at Tess and Tess saw the shimmer of tears in Liz’s eyes. “Liz…” Tess said tenderly, “Don’t let Max slip away. Don’t let what you guys have slip away. Because if you keep pushing him away…you’ll lose him.”

It was those words rather than anything else that Tess had said to her that hit Liz the hardest. The tears shining in her eyes slipped down her cheek as she realized that Tess was right. If she kept fighting what she was feeling, if she didn’t face them then she was going to lose Max. And this time she’d lose him for good.

Tess felt a wave of hope go through her when she saw the tears coursing down Liz’s face and the pain and understanding in her eyes. She had hated watching Max go through what he had without Liz. She wanted what was best for him, wanted him to be happy. And she knew that Liz Parker made him truly happy.

She touched Liz’s hand briefly, almost in companionship. “Liz, I’m happy with Kyle. Truly, deeply happy. It’s time you and Max were happy too. God knows we all deserve it.”

With that, Tess shot Liz a last look and then quietly left the room to join Kyle in the front. She hoped that she had managed to do what she had come here for.

Bringing Max and Liz back together.

* * * * * * * * * * *

Liz smoothed the skirt she was wearing as she tried to stall for time. Standing in front of the Evan’s front door, her heart fluttered nervously and her palms were damp. It had been three hours since Tess had come to talk to her and since then Liz could not sit still.

Tess’s words had kept rolling about in her head. Over and over again she heard Tess say that she’d lose Max if she didn’t do anything about this. In turmoil, she had sat in her room, praying fervently for some sort of answer to her problems. She wished she knew what to do.

Her heart had ached for days for Max, some part of her had cried out for him but another part had stifled those cries out of fear and doubt. What if he didn’t want her back? What if it was too late for them?

But how would you know if you never even asked? A voice had asked her. She had shut her eyes tightly, desperately trying to make some sense of her life. She knew that she should go to talk to Max, if nothing but to clear the air but she was hesitant, unsure of what to expect.

A week ago Max had indicated that he still loved her, that he wanted her, but did he still? She had avoided him all week. What if this made him decide that he didn’t want her anymore? Worse, what if he didn’t want anything to do with her?

There had been only one way to find out. She wasn’t going to run scared. If everything she had been through had taught her anything was that you could not depend on tomorrow. There was only the now.

So, she found herself standing at the Evan’s front door, too nervous to ring the bell and too determined to turn back and run. The option, though, was taken from her when the door opened and she found herself face to face with a startled Isabel.

“Liz! Hi!” She cried in surprise. “What are you doing here?”

“Hi Isabel.” Liz replied, flushing slightly. “I-I was…Is Max home?”

Isabel smiled gently, a light of pleasure and hope in her eyes. “Yeah, he is. He’s up in his room.” She bit her lip, turning to look back inside and then back at Liz. “You want me to call him?”

Liz shook her head quickly, wanting to take the time to gather her thoughts before she faced Max. “No, that’s all right.” She told Isabel. “I’ll just head on up.”

“Sure.” Isabel nodded. She gestured vaguely with the car keys in her hand. “I was just heading out to meet Alex.” She explained.

A smile touched Liz’s lips. “I thought you wanted to make him pay for making you go through all that grief after his ‘death’?” Liz asked.

Isabel grinned. “I was planning on it but then I decided that I didn’t want to waste even a minute arguing with him.” Her eyes went soft and briefly sad as she went on. “I’ve already lost so much of time with him.”

Liz felt a sharp sting of tears prick the back of her eyes. An unbridled thought reminded her that so had she. With that thought still in her head, she said goodbye to Isabel and heard the door close shut behind her. Standing in the foyer, she glanced up at the stairs, her apprehension and nerves returning once more.

Slowly, almost cautiously, she went up the stairs, pausing for only a brief moment at the landing. The door to Max’s room was open partially and she heard the strains of a song coming from inside. She braced her self for the fear and the nervousness but was surprised to find only a wild surge of hope and love.

Standing in the doorway she watched Max, unobserved, lying on his bed, his hand linked behind his head, staring up at the ceiling. She felt a smile form on her face as she watched him and at the same time felt a yearning tug in her heart. How could she have ever let him go?

She rapped her knuckles lightly on the door, making him startle. He saw her and instantly he was on his feet, the surprise etched on his face.

“Liz!” He said, “I didn’t hear the doorbell.”

“Isabel let me in as she was leaving.” Liz explained, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear almost shyly when Max continued to look at her. “I hope it was okay for me to just come up here.”

“I’m glad you did.” Max answered softly. He came to her then but stopped hesitantly a few feet away. “I haven’t seen you in a while. How have you been?”

“I’ve been good…” Liz began but then she stopped and shook her head ruefully. “No, actually, that’s not true.” She raised her head to meet his eyes and said, “It’s been hard for me this week, getting used to everything. My powers, being around everyone again, the timelines, my parents…it’s just been a crazy week.”

“Are you able to control your powers?” Max asked. “I mean, they don’t act up or something, do they?”

Liz smiled and shook her head. “No. Though my parents are having a hard time believing that their daughter is different now.”

“Give it time.” Max told her. “They’ll get there.”

“I know.” Liz admitted. She turned to give the room a sweeping glance and smiled a little. “Not much has changed.”

“Feels like a lot has.” Max replied.

The tone of his voice had Liz’s eyes flying up to meet his and one look at them had her breath catching. She knew instantly that Max didn’t mean the room. She bit her lip and shifted her eyes away nervously. Avoiding answering him, she moved past him and went to his desk. She trailed her hand lightly over the things lying there, remembering the last time she had been up here. She picked up the picture frame lying on the desk and for a moment stared at it. Then she turned back to Max, the frame clutched in her hand, her eyes wide and surprised.

“You kept these…” She said softly.

Max looked at what she was talking about and a fond smile fell across his lips. It was the strip of photographs they both had taken in a photo booth last year. “I took them from your room after you…disappeared. I asked your parents. I hope you don’t mind.” Max said.

“I was going through my things earlier this week and I couldn’t find these…” Liz bit her lip, remembering the sharp pang of panic and sadness she had felt at being unable to find them. “I-I thought I may have lost them.”

Unconsciously her grip on the frame tightened as she looked at Max, her heart aching for him once more, for the love that they once had. It shouldn’t matter that he kept the pictures, that he had wanted to keep them. But it did…. It mattered because it showed that he had missed her, had ached for her as she had for him. He’d told her as much himself but to actually see proof – the actually know it – made her want to throw her arms around him and cry for joy.

She couldn’t deny it any longer, not to him and not to herself. She still wanted Max; she still wanted to be with him. She was scared to take the first step. She didn’t know what would happen if she did. Would it still end the same way it had before or would it be different this time?

Her thoughts warred with her emotions, her head with her heart. More than anything she wanted to be with Max but her head warned her to keep herself from getting hurt again. Her heart told her to try again. She wished she knew who to listen too. She shut her eyes tightly for a brief moment when a tear slipped down her cheek.

“Liz?” Max said softly, with concern when he saw the tear fall. He didn’t hesitate to take her in his arms and lay her head on his shoulder as he stroked her hair. Just for a moment he let himself enjoy the feel of her in his arms. It seemed like it had been forever since he had held her. But for the moment he pushed aside his own pleasure and concentrated on Liz.

“Liz, what’s wrong?” he asked gently when Liz clutched him closer to her. “Are you okay?”

“I was so afraid.” She whispered, keeping her face buried in his chest.

“Afraid of what?”

“I was so afraid – upset – that I may have lost those pictures.” She replied softly, her voice think and choked. Liz now looked up at him, her eyes swimming with tears. But even with the tears in her eyes Max saw the love and longing in her eyes and he felt his hear beat pick up. At her words his arms tightened around her, holding her eyes with his own. “I was afraid that I may have lost you. I was afraid that I pushed you too far this time. That maybe it was too late for us.” She looked at him questioningly. “Is it too late for us, Max?”

Max’s heart pounded with hope and longing. He took her chin gently in his hand and raised her head up. “Liz…are you saying…? What-what are you saying?”

“I am saying – no asking for that second chance.” Liz answered. “Is there a chance for us, Max? Is-Is it too late?” Her eyes were vulnerable and uncertain as she gazed up at him, her hand unconsciously clutching him closer.

Max looked at her in shock for a moment. He had hoped that she’d come back to him but he had never imagined it like this, with her coming to him so willingly. He had imagined that he would need to cajole her, coax her and maybe even have to wait a long time but he had never imagined her to come to him, so eager and worried that he might not want her.

How could she even think that he didn’t want her? Didn’t she know what she was to him? Would always be for him? The thought that she had been worried that he may not want her made his heart ache with tenderness. Instead of answering her question, he gently wrapped his arms around her and leaned down to kiss her.

Liz saw the change in his eyes and her breath caught when his lips touched her. Her eyes fluttered close when she felt the long liquid pulls in her stomach. The kiss wasn’t soft or gentle but hot and passionate. There was an urgency to it, like he couldn’t get enough of her. It was as if he had been starving for her. Helpless to do anything but respond to the kiss, Liz laid a limp hand on his shoulder, curling her fingers into it when Max’s hand swept up her back and fisted into her hair, taking her deeper until she was sure she’d slip down to the floor if he hadn’t been holding her.

This was what had been missing. This was what she needed. It felt like coming home, being complete. Liz thought dreamily. How could she have ever doubted it?

When they both finally came up for air, Liz laid her head on his shoulder, her breath coming in gasps. She could hear Max’s heart racing, could feel her own heart pound just as fast.

“Does that answer your question?” Max asked huskily, as he trailed a hand through her hair.

Liz let out a weak laugh, raising her eyes to his. Hers shined with pleasure and amusement as she nodded. “God, I’ve been such an idiot.” She murmured. “I can’t believe I kept pushing you away, that I kept denying what I knew was right.”

“You were scared.” Max said gently.

But Liz shook her head. “No, I was stupid and stubborn.”

Max grinned. “Well I won’t argue with the stubborn part.” The grin faded as a serious look crossed his features. “You really gave me quite a scare. I thought I’d lost you for sure. I was already planning things I would do to get you back.”

A teasing light lit Liz’s eyes. “Really?” She grinned. “Well, I wouldn’t mind you going ahead with your plans. They sound quite interesting.”

Max grinned at that. “I’ll see if I can make arrangements.” Letting go of her, he gave her a hesitant and apologetic look. “Liz, before we get into any of this…I owe you an apology.”

Liz frowned slightly, confused. “An apology?” She asked. “For what?”

“For the way I treated you before you almost left for Sweden. That fight we had.” Max ran hand through his hair and sighed. “You were right. I didn’t want to hear what you were saying because that would mean I would be partly responsible.”

Liz’s gaze shifted from his, remembering that moment. Though she had vowed to try to push it away and not dwell on it, the truth was she had been hurt by Max’s actions. She tried not to let if affect her, to push it aside but she couldn’t forget it. Max saw the hurt flicker in her eyes briefly and knew that she hadn’t forgotten or forgiven. He did owe her an apology and if they planned to start things again, he wanted a clean slate between them. No old ghosts, no old scars marring their relationship.

“I should have listened to you, should have trusted you.” Max went on. “I didn’t…I drove you away.”

“Max…it doesn’t matter anymore.” Liz said softly. As she said it, she realized that she really meant it. She had been holding on to those months as her basis for being away from Max, but now, after everything that had happened, it didn’t matter any more. She wanted Max to see it too, to know that it could be put away, behind them. “Max, what happened is in the past. It’s time to move past it.”

But Max shook his head. “But in order to move forward, we have to clear our past.” He argued. He took hold of her hand and gently held them. “Liz, wherever we go from here, whatever becomes of us…something will always be between us unless I change it.”

“You don’t need to apologize, Max.” Liz told him. “We were both wrong. I should have let you in more.” She shrugged, a small smile on her lips. “Guess we both need to learn a few things this time around.”

“I am sorry, Liz.” Max replied.

Liz’s eyes grew soft at that and she leaned in to place a light kiss on his lips. “I know.” She answered softly. “So am I.” Then she sighed. “Max…I need you to do something for me.”

Concern filtered into Max’s features when he heard her tone and saw the hesitant look in her eyes. “Anything.”

Liz bit her lip anxiously as she searched for the words. Gently pulling her hands out of Max’s she wrapped them around herself and walked across the room to the window. Leaning against it, stalling, she turned to Max again.

“Max, I love you, I always have.” Liz began. “Even though I’m scared I want what we once had back again. I want us to be together. Right now, being with you…I feel complete, safe. All this time I’ve been away, I missed you, missed what we had.”

“But…?” Max prompted, sensing Liz wanted something.

Liz raised her eyes to meet his. “But I want things to be different this time around.”

“Different how?”

“I want to take it slow and easy.” Liz replied. “I don’t want to be pushed along. I want to take the time to just hold hands with you, go out on dates without being interrupted by some alien emergency…I want memories, Max. Memories of us falling in love.”

“All right.”

Liz’s eyes widened slight in surprise. “All right?” She asked. “Just like that?”

Max nodded and came to stand in front of her. “Just like that.” He repeated. He held her gaze with his as he asked gently, “Why were you so hesitant to tell me you wanted this?”

“I thought you might be…” Liz bit her lip and shrugged. “Well…disappointed or upset.”

“Why would I be, Liz?” Max asked gently. He touched the ends of her hair lightly before tucking a strand behind her ear lovingly. “I want all those things too.” He cupped her face and smiled at her. “I want to fall in love with you all over again, Liz Parker. I want to fall deeper and want to cherish every moment of it.”

Liz’s eyes misted over as she smiled at him. “I’ve missed you, Max.” She told him. “More than you’ll ever know.”

“Believe me, I know!” Max murmured before leaning down to capture her mouth with his.

Wrapping her arms around Max’s neck to deepen the kiss, Liz felt a wave of contentment and love wash over her. She knew, without a doubt, that no matter what the odds, they’d be okay. They had each other.
