Sorry about the cliffhanger, guys. I just couldn't help myself. But...but...but...at least you get to find out what happens! Unlike some people who shall remain nameless *cough*JossWhedon*cough*. ;)

Phaedra, Mmmm...gravy. I haven't had gravy for months...now I can't get the idea of biscuits and gravy out of my head.

Lady Scorpio, Hey, thanks for leaving feedback!

Don't have time for individual responses today, but you all have very good questions...most of which will be answered in this next part. As always, thanks for reading and thanks for leaving me much appreciated feedback!

Part 50

“I still think we should take him to the hospital.” He hears a man’s voice…close by. And he gets a sense of several people crowded around him. But he’s drifting…can’t open his eyes.

“No!” Many voices at once. Good. No hospitals. Someone is here who knows.

“What’s wrong with him?” Someone poking at his face. Pain.

“You just left him out there?” Liz. His Liz. His Liz. His Liz.

“It’s not like he gave us a choice.” Michael. Good. Michael won’t let anything happen to him. Why is he floating? Why can’t he see? Everyone sounds so…far away.

“Looks like he’s been out in the sun all day…no water. There’s definitely something wrong with him.” The suspicious man…the one who wants to take him to the hospital.

“Jeff…just…go get some more wet towels, would you?” Jeff. Liz’s dad. The Crashdown. Liz’s balcony. Zan.

He tries to open his eyes, but he still can’t see. His lips feel like 200-year-old parchment paper that’ll crack open if he moves them. He’s reminded of a visit to Washington DC when he saw the Declaration of Independence at the Smithsonian. He tries to make a sound from his throat, but it’s not working.

“I think he’s waking up.” The face-poker again. No more poking. Please.

“Max. Max, can you hear me?” Liz. The sound of her voice is like a soothing balm over his skin and he relaxes. “I’m just gonna replace this.”

Blinding light. He can see! Only to be replaced by darkness again. Crap.

“I saw him pull up out front and stumble from the car. I can’t believe he drove in this condition.”

Silence. People moving. People coming. People going. A door closing.

Furious whispering. “Well we can’t just heal him. How will I explain it to my parents?”

“We hafta get him outta here.” Zan. That’s right. Zan was with Liz. Doing what? How did he find out? Is Liz in danger?

Finally, a sound. It escapes like the last breath of air in his body and produces a squeaking sound from his lips.

“Max.” He can smell her perfume. So close. “Max, please wake up.”

All he can manage is some weird, frog sounding noise and he works his jaw…trying to speak. Try again. “Eyes.” There. One word.

“Eyes? What the hell does that mean?” Ok, the face poker is Maria. He recognizes her voice now.

“Max…what…” He feels a tear drop on his lips and knows it belongs to Liz. “Eyes…he can’t see. Max, listen to me. We think your eyes are burned so we have them covered with a wet cloth.” She’s speaking slowly, probably afraid he can’t understand.

“We need to get him out of here.” Michael sounds angry. Probably blames himself.

“Ok, let’s go. You carryin’ him?” Zan…why is he here? What did he do to Liz? Did Zan do this to him?

He’s moving now. Funny how he can’t feel anything below his chest. He wonders about that for a second before darkness overtakes him again.

When he wakes again, he doesn’t hear any voices. Remembering what Liz said about his eyes, he carefully cracks one open…testing. The room is dark and he feels the familiar texture of the mattress in his bedroom. He feels a little more normal and his eye doesn’t seem to hurt so he opens it all the way, then the other one. He looks up at the ceiling and tests his arms to see if he can move and almost cries with relief that he can feel them…that he can feel his legs and his feet.

The bed dips down next to him and suddenly he sees Liz’s face hovering over him…her dark hair falling like a curtain around her. “Hey. You’re awake.” She immediately runs her hands over his face and arms and his sides…scanning…before she reaches for a cup and holds it in front of his mouth. The straw pokes his lips and he notices that they don’t hurt anymore. “Drink.” She demands and he complies.

“What happened?” His voice is scratchy and she frowns, bringing her hand up to his throat and he feels a warm tingling sensation before she pulls it away.

“Try again.”

“What happened?” His voice sounds normal now…as he expected.

She looks him over and he realizes that he’s lying there in nothing but his boxers with a sheet over his legs. “I was hoping you could tell me. The best we can figure out is you were lying in the desert for almost twelve hours. We found bite marks here.” She touches his side softly, just under his ribs. “Michael thinks they were scorpions. Could have been a snake. We don’t know. Your face and neck were burned so badly…you had blisters all over. And your eyes…you must have had your eyes open because they were burned as well.”

“You healed me.” He says it as a statement more than a question, knowing she would be the only one here capable of that type of healing.

She nods and says, “Zan heard you trying to climb my ladder and we found you lying in the ally. My mom was already there because she saw you drive up and she saw what you looked like. Max…it was…” Her voice cracks with emotion and she looks up at his face and he can see tears in her eyes. “What were you doing, Max? You weren’t…was it because of what I said?”

“No. Liz…no. I just…I just laid down for a little while. I don’t even remember being bitten.” He doesn’t want her to think he was trying to kill himself. Was he? No, definitely no. He remembers becoming a little delirious, but that’s it. “I didn’t think I even slept…I don’t know…it’s kind of fuzzy now, but when I got up it was dark and I remember being confused about how I could have been out there so long.”

He sits up a little, still feeling weak, and reaches for the cup of water. Liz warns him not to drink too much at once and he obeys…taking a small sip before setting it back down. “I thought I was just sunburned.”

“The poison must have worked its way through your body and by the time you got to the Crashdown…Max, you could have died out there.” Liz sits back in a chair that’s now sitting next to his bed and she covers her face with her hands. “I’m so sorry.” Her voice is muffled but he can still hear her.

“Liz, you have nothing to be sorry for. Hey.” He reaches for her hand, trying to pull it away from her face.

She shakes her head and says, “I said all those things to you and…I was just trying to push you, to snap you out of this…I just wanted to get a reaction, any kind of reaction. I didn’t think you’d…”

“Come here.” He sits up and grabs her arms, pulling her over onto the bed with him. Thankfully she comes willingly and wraps her arms around his waist. “Don’t cry. Please, Liz…don’t cry for me. I already feel like the world’s biggest asshole.”

He feels her laugh then and he knows she’ll be ok. Lying back, he pulls her down with him and she rests her head on his chest. For several minutes, they just lie there and she listens to his heartbeat.

“Liz?”

“Hmm?”

“What was Zan doing with you?” He has to know. He’s scared that he might have scared her, or worse, hurt her.

“He climbed up to my balcony. He didn’t know anyone was up there and we scared each other pretty good. When he realized that I was real…that I was alive…he told me that Maria said I used to sit up there all the time when I was young. And that he went up there almost every night…as a sort of penance…for killing me.” She laughs and says, “I thought he was gonna have a heart attack when he saw me.”

“And you were ok with him being there?”

“Honestly, I was scared to death when I first saw him. But I think he was more scared of me than the other way around.” She feels his arm tighten against her back and says, “It’s ok. We talked …and I might get a little nervous around him…but I don’t think he’d ever hurt me. Just, you know, some residual memories…that’s all.”

Max sits up then, bringing Liz with him and he gets up on shaky legs to get a t-shirt out of his dresser. He sits back on the bed next to Liz and brings his hand to her hair, letting it run through his fingers slowly. “It’s been a weird day.” She nods in agreement and he smiles. “But I don’t want you to think for one second that what you said to me earlier had anything to do with what happened. I just laid down…I wanted to think…to have some peace. It could have happened any other day, but it just happened to be today. I think I was trying to meditate and clear my head. Sometimes, if I concentrate, I can feel my mind leave my body and maybe that’s what happened and whatever bit me, did it when I couldn’t feel anything. But I’m glad you were here. No one else could have healed me. Cal is in L.A. and no one else can do what you did. You saved my life.”

“Max…” She starts to disagree, but he holds his finger against her lips to silence her.

“Shhh. Don’t.” He shakes his head. “I’m not sure where to go from here…or what to do about…our situation. But I do know one thing. I’m glad you’re here now. I never meant to hurt you, and I never meant to leave you with this huge responsibility. I was selfish and I thought I was doing the right thing, but obviously it wasn’t right at all.”

“Max, I know you were trying to do the right thing. For both of us. You weren’t the only one there that night. I knew you were leaving…I knew the consequences. But more than I’m worried about me…or this baby…I was worried about what I was hearing about you. You gave up, Max. You’ll never be able to be successful if you go there already defeated. I couldn’t let you do that.” She leans into his hand and says, “You have people here who love you…a lot of people. And they’re all counting on you to come back.”

“I don’t know if I’ll be able to come back.” He says sadly and looks away.

She brings her hand up to turn him back to face her. “But you have to try. You have to do everything you can to come back to us.” She doesn’t say anything else. She doesn’t tell him that she has her own plans. Plans that she’s been busily executing all day today. Because she wants him to come back to himself…to find a reason inside of himself to live.

She sees him looking longingly down at her stomach and she leans back on the bed, lifting her shirt up to expose her still-flat stomach. “Go ahead.” She invites with a smile.

Apprehensive, he holds his hand over her skin for a moment before making contact. The connection is instantaneous and he gasps at the shock of it. He’s filled with the feeling of being warm and content. Safe. And he knows it’s coming from the little being living inside of Liz…a girl…part Liz and part him. She’s aware…aware that he’s her father and that Liz is her mother. And she has complete trust in both of them to keep her safe.

He doesn’t even realize that he’s lowered his head to her stomach and rested his cheek there until he feels Liz’s hand tangle in his hair. He closes his eyes and concentrates on his connection to her and whispers, “She’s beautiful.”

Liz laughs softly and he can hear it all the way to his soul. “She’s only about an inch long, Max. And she probably looks more like a tadpole than a baby.”

“How did you find out? When did you find out? Have you been to a doctor?” He lifts his head and sees her twinkling eyes looking back at him.

“I felt her presence before I had any physical signs. But to make sure, when I was two weeks late I cleared the local Walgreen’s of all their pregnancy tests and took them. They were all positive. That was the day after New Year’s. And no, no doctor. It wouldn’t be safe.” She watches him place a small kiss right below her bellybutton and gently pull down her shirt.

“Did you tell Alex?” He’s guessing no, since no one ever brought it up to him.

She sits up again and sighs. “No. I was gonna wait…until after. I knew he’d tell Isabel and that Isabel would tell you. Of course, this was before I realized that you knew already. But I didn’t want anyone to use this to guilt you into staying…and I think…I think that’s why, even after I knew that you knew, I didn’t say anything.”

This surprises him and he asks, “So you agree that I should go? You’re all for it now?”

“I do, and I am. I’ve had a lot of time to think about it, and this is the only way to prevent what we know will happen from happening. Khivar has to be stopped before he turns his attention to Earth.” She swings her legs over the side of the bed and tucks her hair behind her ear.

“I sense a ‘but’ coming on.” He says warily.

She turns to look at him and smirks at his tone. “But…I think you might be going about it the wrong way.”

“The wrong way? How?” He’s not sure what she’s getting at, but he has a nagging feeling that he won’t like it.

“You can’t do it yourself, Max. I told you before, that the one thing I learned from the Granolith is that we’re stronger when we’re all working together. You need people with you…people you can trust.” She says.

“And I suppose you’re gonna tell me one of those people is you.” He guesses.

“And Michael, Isabel, Ava…and maybe even Zan. Max, you need us. You need me.” There. She’s said it. Now she prepares for the argument.

“No way.” He gets up from the bed and wobbles a bit, still weak.

“Max, Zan and Ava have powers that you can’t ever hope to have. And my powers are ten times stronger than yours.”

He raises an eyebrow and says, “Ten times?”

“Whatever.” She waves her hand in dismissal. “If you really think about it, you know that I’m right.”

“Well, maybe we should just ask everyone to come along. How about Maria, Alex, Kyle and Serena?” He laughs without humor.

“That’s just silly. Maria, Alex and Kyle don’t have powers. And Serena’s pregnant.” She argues.

You’re pregnant!”

She pauses and says, “Well…yah. But I’m also your greatest asset.”

“How so? Besides your magnificently superior powers?” He scoffs.

“I’m your Queen…not technically…but your people will acknowledge me as the Queen you chose. And I’m carrying the heir to the throne. That puts me in a powerful position strategically, and it’ll give you the respect and honor of your people. It’s been true of any culture throughout history, and it’s true of yours.” She sighs and folds her hands in her lap. “Max. As much as I would love it if you’d ask me to come with you willingly…because you believe that I can help you…ultimately, I’m not asking for your permission.” She knows she doesn’t need it, and she hates to pull that card…but she’s learned a lot over the last few weeks, and even more today. And she’s convinced, now more than ever, that she should be there with him.

She stands up and puts her hand on his arm. “I’m gonna go down now and tell everyone that you’re ok. Drink some more water and try to get some sleep. Your body still isn’t fully recovered.”

He watches her walk out of his room, shutting the door quietly in her wake, and he sinks down on his bed. There’s no way in hell he’s letting her go with him. He won’t let her put herself and their child in that kind of danger. Lying back on his bed, he tries to let the day’s events slide away…but all he can really think about are her words …ultimately, I’m not asking for your permission...and what she meant by them.

~~~~~~~~~~
He has no idea the lengths that Liz has gone to with her plan. He has no idea that she’s already talked to Michael and Isabel. Or that she talked to Ava, asking her if she would be willing to go with Max. She even had several conversations with Cal and Serena regarding the implications if she were to go. She’s prepared to board the Granolith with or without Max’s permission, and she knows now that he can’t stop her.
She called Cal when she realized she was pregnant and that her powers had increased significantly. That conversation is where the seed of her plan was planted. She didn’t know it then, but over the last few weeks, it’s become clearer to her what her role should be.
After letting everyone know that Max is ok, she sits out on the back patio with a hot cup of tea and thinks about what she’ll have to do to convince him that she’s right. The door opening gets her attention and she looks back to see Michael walking outside.
“Hey, it’s cold. Maria told me to bring you this.” He walks over and hands her a blanket before sitting in the chair next to her.
“Thanks.” She wraps the blanket around herself gratefully. “I didn’t know you guys were still here.”
“I don’t get it.” He says, causing her to look at him in question. “Why are you so willing to do this? I mean, the rest of us…it’s our planet. But there’s no reason for you to go with us.”
“I love him.” She says simply. As if that’s the only reason she needs.
He thinks she’s gonna say more, but when he realizes that’s it, he says, “You can love him from here. You don’t need to be there.”
“But I want to be there. I can help. Look, Cal told me about your powers. He told me that they’re not as strong as you had all hoped. And for some…strange reason, I have powers that none of you could possibly have. You need me. Max needs me.”
“Like what? Besides that shield and some blasting, what can you do?” Michael knows she’s more adept than them in those things, but it’ll take more than some blasts and a shield to overthrow an entire regime.
“I get glimpses of the future…when I touch people. And I can tell whether someone’s telling the truth or not. And that little blast and shield you saw this morning is nothing compared to what I can really do. I don’t know if the baby is amplifying my powers or what, but I have abilities that can help you…that can help keep you alive. And on top of that, I’m the only other healer you have besides Max.”
He’s surprised. He knew she could heal…he saw her do it earlier when they brought Max back and when she healed him after Max’s pummeling in the desert. But seeing the future? Lie detection? The possibilities of those two things boggle his mind. “Wow.”
“Yah. And with Isabel and Ava, you have a complete four square. We know that’s important from the Granolith. Add Zan and me to the mix and you’ve got…like, a four square plus. If we work together, I know we can do this…and we can all live.” Liz knows that Michael will see her point. She’s already got Cal on her side…and it won’t take much to get Isabel, Zan and Ava to fall in line either. But Michael…he’s the one Max will really listen to. Maybe not at first, but he will eventually.
Michael sits in silence for several minutes before saying, “You know, I really didn’t need to hear about your night of wild sex with Max.” He looks at her, his mouth quirked up in a smirk.
She rolls her eyes and says, “Yah. Sorry about that. But I had to pull out the big guns, and I couldn’t dwell on the fact that you were there.” She smiles and says, “If I promise to never talk about our sex life again, will you forgive me?”
“I guess. Only because I’m sure Maria gives you all the details of ours. So we’re even.” He stands up and starts to walk back inside.
“Michael.” She calls out to him and he turns around. “Think about what I said.”
He nods and continues back inside, admiring Liz Parker more with every step.
~~~~~~~~~~

After finishing her tea, Liz goes back inside and the house is quiet. Someone has left a light on in the hallway for her and she makes her way back to Max’s room and pushes the door in slightly. She can see him sprawled out on his bed asleep…the covers tossed to the floor. So she walks in quietly and picks them up off the floor and carefully arranges them back on the bed to cover him.

“Liz?” His voice is laced with sleep and she looks up to see him cracking his eyes open.

She walks up to the head of his bed and angles the cup of water toward his mouth, her hand behind his head helping him. “Drink some of this.” She’s worried about his dehydration and knows his body won’t completely heal…no matter how much she tries to heal him…until he gets enough water into it.

He leans back when he’s done and asks, “What time is it?”

“Late. Go back to sleep.” She tells him and tucks the covers closer to him.

Kicking off her shoes and undoing her jeans, she hears him mumble, “Stay with me.” And she smiles…having already decided to do just that. Besides, all the bedrooms and the couch are taken and she has no where else to sleep.

She peels her jeans off and pulls her sweater over her head leaving her in a t-shirt and her underwear. Sighing because she already brought her bags to her parent’s house earlier, she resigns herself to the fact that this will have to be good enough and crawls into bed next to Max.

Adjusting the covers around her, she feels Max’s arm automatically draw her closer to him and she obliges by turning onto her side to let him spoon her. She can hear the steady sound of his breathing and knows that he’s already asleep, so she closes her eyes and it doesn’t take long for her to follow him there.

RedRoze68, I'm assuming that Liz explained to Zan why they lied to him. But we'll find out later how Zan feels about it all and if he knew he was being taken over by Tess or not.

cherie, glad to hear the knife is gone. ;) It sounded pretty painful.

BehrObsession, I'm glad you found my fic and that you're enjoying it! Thanks for the feedback!

SoulmateDreamer, thanks for coming out of lurkdom to leave me some feedback!

BelieveInTrueLove, nope, no reforming of the bond. It's gone...never to return.

Kath, In case you missed it, I responded to the question of Zan's healing abilities a few posts back. It'll be addressed in a later part, though.

I am a dreamer, Hmmm...Tess. I wonder what she's up to? ;)

Zevrillion, I hate Liz the doormat. I always thought it was so out of character for her on the show. Thank goodness we have fanfic to fix that!

Hope you all like the next part. I'm finally finished with the ending, but I'm sure it'll change 375 times before I'm done posting. ;) Thanks to everyone who's reading and thanks for all the great feedback!

Part 51

Max’s first thought when he wakes up is that he’s overslept when he feels the sunlight streaming in through his bedroom window. Usually he’s up before dawn. But then he feels someone curved against him and he opens his eyes to see the back of Liz’s head. His memories from the day before come flooding back, but he can’t remember Liz getting into bed with him.

Not that he’s complaining. She’s pressed tightly against him and he can feel her skin underneath his hand…which feels like it’s ridden up under her shirt. Closing his eyes he breathes in the scent of her hair and tightens his hold on her…reveling in the feel of her body against his.

He feels the wide open connection between him and the baby lying beneath his hand and at that moment, he knows that he never wants to lose this feeling. Unaware of the fact that he’s been moving his hand in slow circles over Liz’s stomach, he leans forward and buries his face in Liz’s hair and hears Liz moan and wiggle back into him.

“Unless the plan is to wear the skin off my stomach, I suggest you either stop…or move it elsewhere.” Her throaty voice drifts up to him and he freezes.

She moans in disappointment then, and says, “Mmm…I was kind of hoping you’d choose the second option.”

He smiles into her hair and says, “Ah…sorry.” and moves his hand to her arm.

It only takes a few moments, but he hears her start laughing softly before she turns over to face him. “You’re real funny.” She raises her eyebrows at him and rolls her eyes.

“And you…are half naked and in my bed and I don’t remember how you got here. Are you trying to take advantage of me in my weakened state, Miss Parker?” He looks at her suspiciously as he lowers the covers to expose the small t-shirt she’s wearing and the lacy top of her underwear. Lightly tracing his finger along the top, he watches in fascination as her hips buck up slightly and he looks up to her face and sees her eyes closed.

He leans his head down and replaces the finger on her stomach with his mouth and tongue…breathing deeply of her sleepy, musky scent. And he’s rewarded by the sound of a moan from deep in her throat…and a loud knock on the door.

Not lifting his head, he yells, “Go away!”

“No can do. The big guy’s here. Get your ass up.” They both hear Zan’s voice call out from the other side of the door before they hear footsteps falling away down the hall.

Max rolls onto his back with a groan and shuts his eyes. He opens them again in surprise when he feels his boxers whip down his legs before Liz is on top of him, her legs straddled across his hips. “Liz?”

Impaling herself on him in one smooth motion, they both close their eyes at the sensation and she says, “I’m about ten seconds away from coming, Max…I need you.” She grabs both of his hands and brings them up under her shirt to cup her breasts as her head falls back and she tries to set the pace she needs.

Completely mesmerized with the sight of her flushed body in front of him, he bends his knees to give her more leverage and he meets her downward thrusts halfway. When she brings her hand down between her legs to touch herself, he groans and feels the familiar tingling in his gut. “Oh God…Liz…I’m…” He thrusts up hard and feels her walls contract around him as her head falls forward with a loud moan and he loses it…his hips jerking into her a final two…three times before she collapses onto his chest.

They lie there for a few moments, still connected, and he presses one arm across her back with his other hand at the back of her head…cradling her to him. He runs his hand through her hair and he can feel both of their heartbeats slowly return to normal.

Her face muffled against his shirt, she says, “I guess I should tell you…since I’ve been pregnant, I’m really horny in the morning.”

They both laugh and she lifts her head to place a small kiss on his lips and he says, “I guess I’ll just have to suffer through it”

She rolls her eyes at him with a smile before moving to his side and curling up against him. “You should probably get out there. Sounds like they’re waiting for you.”

~~~~~~~~~~
Five minutes later, Max is dressed and walks into the living room to find everyone sitting there waiting for him. “What are you doing here so early, Cal?”
“I got a frantic phone call from Ava last night that you were on death’s door.” Cal looks him up and down and says, “But I hear now that Liz was here and took care of it. You’re lucky.”
“Sorry you rushed here for nothing.” Max sits in a vacant chair and scratches the back of his head. “But I’m glad you’re here. We have a lot to talk about and some decisions to make.” He glances around and senses that most of the people in this room have already heard about Liz’s plan. How did he become so out of touch with what was going on?
Just then, the doorbell rings and his mom opens the door to reveal Kyle and Serena. Kyle walks in and zeroes in on Max and says, “He looks ok to me.”
“Max, you’re…” Serena steps next to Kyle and joins in his perusal of Max. “Liz did an incredible job. You looked half dead last night.”
“Hey, I have this scar…about right…here.” Kyle reaches around to point to an area on his butt. “You think she could…”
“No.” Max says in irritation, causing Kyle to grin at him.
“I don’t even wanna know how you got a scar on your ass, Valenti.” Michael jokes.
“Oh, it was right after high school and he was at this party and thought it would be a good idea to climb over this iron fence and go skinny dipping…” Maria chimes in excitedly, ready to tell the tale.
“Maria!” Kyle warns. “No one wants to hear about that.”
“I do.” Zan says, quickly followed by agreement from Ava and Isabel.
“So where is Liz?” Serena asks, peeking into the kitchen and trying to change the subject.
“She’s taking a shower. She’ll be down in a minute.” Max says.
Not sure about the current state of Max’s mind, Isabel hopes Liz got through to him and brought her brother back. But just in case, she treads lightly. “What did you wanna talk about, Max?”
“We’ve got three weeks until the planned departure.” Max looks over to Cal and says, “It’s been brought to my attention…that maybe there are other opinions regarding who should go and who should stay.”
Michael catches Zan and Ava exchanging glances and he turns to Max. “I’m going.” He knows that Liz has talked to everyone and he also knows it’s a good plan. Hopefully Max won’t feel like he’s being railroaded and do something stupid like sneak off without them.
“We’re goin’ too.” Zan says as he puts his arm around Ava.
Max looks at Ava and she nods, agreeing with Zan. Then he looks over at Isabel and knows what he’ll hear from her.
“I’m going, Max.” Her voice is steady…offering no room for argument.
Everyone watches Max expectantly as he leans back in his chair with a sigh and rubs his face. They’re not sure how he’s going to react and they can only hope that Liz was able to convince him that this is how it needs to happen.
Max looks toward Cal and raises his eyebrows. “What, you’re not volunteering too?”
Cal gets a panicked look on his face and says, “Not really my thing, Max. The last time I volunteered for something, I ended up here.”
Serena looks at Cal in disappointment. She would go if she could. But there are two things keeping her from speaking up. One, she would be a huge liability as the keeper of the Granolith. Going into a war situation, Max would be screwed if she were to be captured. And two, she’s pregnant. But she had hoped that Cal would decide to go with them. He could be an asset.
Accepting Cal’s statement, not wanting to force anyone to go if they don’t want to, Max looks back at Michael. “Alright. I can accept that. On one condition…Liz stays here. She can’t go.”
Michael sighs and says, “I think you’ll have talk to her about that.” And he nods toward the hall where Liz has just appeared.
Max whips his head around to look at Liz. “I already told you, Max. I’m going.” She says as she walks fully into the room.
He shakes his head and turns back to Michael. “No deal.”
Michael looks completely helpless as his gaze travels between Max and Liz. Both of whom are shooting daggers at him from their eyes. How did he become the one in the middle of this?
“So what now? Who’s the one that gets to make the final decision?” Kyle pipes up when it seems that the staring match isn’t going to end any time soon.
“I think Liz should go, Max.” Ava speaks up quietly from the sofa and everyone turns to look at her. “We need her.” Over the last couple of months she hasn’t voiced her opinion very often, choosing to observe more often than not. So she hopes that the fact that she’s speaking up now will hold some kind of weight.
“That’s not the point.” Max says.
“I know. You think that by making her stay here, she’ll be safe. But if we don’t win…if we don’t stop Khivar now, she won’t be safe here either.” Ava has heard from Liz about her abilities and she knows that they could be extremely useful to them.
As he looks around the room, Max can see that everyone thinks that Liz is right and that she should go with them. He sighs in frustration, not wanting to hear anymore of their arguments. He may be willing to concede that Liz could be an asset to them, but there’s no way in hell he can allow her to put herself in that kind of danger. So, knowing he can’t say anything more about it right now, he turns to Cal. “There’s another issue we need to discuss. I’m taking a shower, then let’s head out to the pod chamber.”
Ready to jump on the change of subject, Cal raises his eyebrow in question and nods.
Liz watches Max get up and walk past her…with a glance that speaks volumes. He’s angry that she keeps pushing him, and he’s disappointed that everyone seems to agree with her. Turning to follow him, she walks into his room and sees him pulling his t-shirt off before grabbing clean clothes from his dresser.
“Can we not do this now?” He asks, not looking at her.
Liz sighs and says, “I just came to tell you that I’m going back home.”
He looks up then. Home? New York? Is she giving up that easily? He desperately wants her to give up the idea of going to Antar with him…but he’s hit with the brutal realization that he doesn’t want her to leave Roswell.
“To the Crashdown.” She clarifies when she sees the beginnings of panic cross his face. She realizes they’re at a stalemate right now, but there’s time still to change his mind.
“Oh.” He relaxes, letting it sink in that she’s staying before he resumes gathering clothes for the day. He has a nagging feeling that there’s something else he needs to tell her, but can’t remember what it is with all the other thoughts crowding his head right now. He picks up his clothes and turns to her. “Will I see you later?”
“You know where to find me.” She grabs her purse from the top of his dresser and leans up to kiss him on the cheek.
~~~~~~~~~~

He’s been watching her over the last few days, looking for signs…wondering. But he can’t tell. Now, as they sit in the kitchen of their temporary home eating lunch, Michael drops his sandwich and just stares…unable to go on wondering. “Are you pregnant?”

Maria chokes on her sandwich and looks at Michael in shock. “Jesus Christ, Michael! No! I mean…no…no, I’m not. I don’t think so.” Her eyes widen and her voice squeaks. “Am I?” She looks down toward her own abdomen and pokes at it with her hand.

“I don’t think so. I don’t sense anything different about you.” Michael grabs her hand and forces her attention away from her stomach. “I didn’t mean to freak you out.”

“But you have to have a reason for asking.” She looks at him worriedly, wondering how she could have missed something like that.

He shakes his head and says, “It’s just something Max said the other day. He was telling me that I had responsibilities here, that you needed me. Especially now. I didn’t know what he was talking about but I’ve been thinking about it and just thought maybe…”

Maria wrinkles her brow in thought and wonders, “Why would he say that? Especially now? What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I don’t know. Maybe because he knew Liz was pregnant.” He shrugs and says, “Maybe you should take one of those tests, just to be sure.”

She nods, although she feels pretty certain that she can’t be pregnant. She didn’t miss the slightly hopeful face Michael had a minute ago, though, and she asks, “Would you be disappointed? If I’m not?”

“No.” He says quickly…too quickly. “I mean, of course not. I’m leaving. I would never wanna do that to you.”

She smiles and picks up her sandwich again. “I’ll go pick up a test after lunch. Don’t worry, big guy, no one’s knocking me up unless I know about it before hand.” She winks at him as she takes a bite of her sandwich and smiles when he rolls his eyes.

~~~~~~~~~~
Isabel’s outside helping her mom with some gardening when she hears her cell phone ring. She peels off her gardening gloves and smiles when she sees that it’s Alex. “Hey!”
“Hello, gorgeous.” He drawls in a deep voice, making her giggle.
“I have a bone to pick with you, mister.”
“Uh oh. You sound mad. Am I gonna be punished?”
Isabel blushes and turns away from her mom. “Shut up. I’m serious. Why didn’t you tell me Liz was pregnant?”
“Pregnant?! Whoa! What are you talking about?”
“You didn’t know.” She confirms, having thought that maybe Liz didn’t tell him.
“What do you mean, she’s pregnant?” Alex clearly sounds confused. “Why didn’t she tell me?”
“I’m sorry. I should have let her tell you.” Isabel suddenly regrets being the one to break the news to him.
“Well, obviously she wasn’t going to. How is she? Is that why she went to Roswell?” Alex is remembering how quickly she left…and with very few answers for him as to why.
“She’s fine. Alex, there’s something we need to talk about. When are you coming?” She dreads having to tell him that she’s leaving, too. But she has to think about the right thing to do, and staying here for selfish reasons isn’t really an option anymore.
“I wasn’t planning to for another two weeks. Do you want me there sooner?” Her tone sounds serious and he feels a pit of dread forming in his stomach.
“Can you? I hate to ask…but I really need you here. Can you come?”
“Sure. I’ll try to get a ticket out there as soon as I can. Is everything ok?”
“Yah…I just…I miss you.” She’s walked a few steps away from her mom and she’s cradling the phone as if to convey to him how much she misses him.
“I miss you, too. I’ll call and let you know when I can be there.”
“Thank you, Alex. I’ll talk to you soon.” They say goodbye and she tucks her phone back in her pocket, taking a moment to collect herself before returning to her mom.
“So is he coming?” Diane asks when Isabel kneels down next to her.
“Yah.” She picks some weeds out of the tulip bed and smiles. “He didn’t even hesitate. I asked him to come and he just said, ‘Sure.’ I think he’s too good to be true.”
“You two looked pretty serious when he was here for Valentine’s Day. I can’t imagine how it must feel knowing you’re leaving in a few weeks. It must be hard.” Diane studies her daughter closely and notices the way she draws her lips together. She wants to beg Isabel to not go, but she doesn’t want to make it harder than it already is for her.
“It’s hard for everyone, mom.” Isabel says as she continues pulling weeds.
Smac, Liz is staying at the Crashdown because the Evans' house is a little crowded...and because her parents asked her to. She's not mad at Max.
I am a dreamer, I think I gave it away that it was Tess the last time we had a peek into Tess' mind a few parts back. Cal didn't take away her powers...just knocked her out & called the FBI.
vegas, A thousand questions? I'll answer one of them: yes :lol:
FloridaGirl, Bwahaha!:lol: I can see it now...a small sign at the base of the Granolith: 'Maximum Capacity - 8 People'
BelieveInTrueLove, Ok, to be fair I'll answer one of your questions like I did for vegas: yes. ;)
Phaedra, Hint received and filed.:lol: No pictures necessary.;)
Part 52
She supposes it couldn’t be helped. It was only a matter of time before the inevitable happened. For old time’s sake, and because her parents were one waitress down today, Liz agreed to help them out. Her one request, that they not make her wear the uniform, was refused so here she is serving the lunchtime rush wearing the same tacky dress…complete with alien head apron and silver antennae. And one Jim Valenti sitting at the counter waiting for his order to be taken. She knew it was only a matter of time before he found out she was in town…might as well get it over with.
Taking a deep breath and raising her chin, Liz pulls out her order pad and walks over to stand in front of him. “What can I get for you today, Sheriff?” She tries to be as polite as she would to any other customer…her pen poised above the pad, her best fake-smile plastered on her face.
He appears taken aback for a moment before a smile comes to his face. Then it drops slowly…almost as if he suddenly remembers that he shouldn’t be smiling at her. “Liz. I didn’t know you were back in Roswell.”
“Just visiting, Sheriff. What can I get for you?” She asks again, hoping he gets the hint that she’s not going to answer any of his questions.
Nodding in understanding, he says, “A galaxy sub, hold the mayo. An order of saturn rings and a coke, please.”
Liz jots his order down and says, “I’ll be right back with your drink.” before turning away to deliver the ticket to the order window.
When she sets his drink in front of him, he clears his throat and says, “Um…Liz, I was wondering. Could I have a few moments…to talk to you?”
“As you can see, we’re kind of busy right now.” Liz nods her head toward the crowded restaurant, dreading the questions she’s sure are coming.
“Oh, sure…I…I understand. I just…” He sighs and takes off his hat, setting it on the counter next to him. “I wanted to apologize, that’s all.”
She cocks her head to the side and wrinkles her brow as she studies him. Apologize? Is he for real? “Apologize.” She repeats in disbelief.
He leans forward on his elbows, hands clasped in front of him. “Look, Liz…I know it probably doesn’t mean anything now. God knows, you have every right to just walk away and not listen to me. But I’ve had a lot of time to think about the way I treated you and…I was wrong. Really wrong. There’s no way I can make up for it, and I’m not asking you to forgive me…I just…I wanted you to know that I regret how I hounded you back then. And I hope that I’m not the reason you’ve stayed away from Roswell.” He clears his throat and leans back in his chair. “I’m sorry I was such a pain in your ass, Liz. I really am.”
She quirks up her mouth reluctantly at his declaration, but quickly forces it away. She doesn’t know what to think of him or what his motivations are for telling her this now, so she says, “It doesn’t really matter anymore, Sheriff.”
He smiles a little and says, “I’ve been hoping for years that I’d see you back in town so I could talk to you about this. I’m just glad you didn’t let my treatment of you keep you from your friendship with Kyle. I know you mean a lot to him…and Serena.”
“Yah, well, they mean a lot to me, too.” She sees a customer waving for her attention. “I have to get back to work.” She pauses as she turns to leave, then turns back to him. “Thank you.” She offers him a tentative smile before walking away, not noticing her mom standing just inside the order window…having been listening to their conversation.
~~~~~~~~~~

Max has forgotten how hot it gets in the desert, even though it’s not even spring yet. He’s used to the cooler weather on the east coast and he can understand now why he was so badly burned yesterday. Relieved when he finally reaches the shade and cool air of the pod chamber, he waits for Cal and Serena to join him as he studies the empty pods more closely.

He’s been out here countless times over the last couple of months and he still finds them fascinating. And even though they were disassembled when they moved the Granolith, there’s still an inner light that makes them glow…bathing the chamber in an eerie blue light. He has yet to find its source.

“So why’d we have to hike all the way out here just to have a conversation?” Cal complains when he joins Max in the chamber…followed closely by Serena.

“Two things. I want Serena to go over everything she can tell be about running the Granolith one more time. And I wanted to talk to both of you about Liz.” Max sees Cal glance away uncomfortably and it reinforces his decision to talk to him about her as soon as possible.

Serena sits on a nearby rock and says, “Max, Liz has already made up her mind. She seems pretty adamant about going.”

“Can’t you talk to her? Maybe if you explain to her how you’re not going because you’re pregnant…”

She holds up her hand and interrupts him. “Hold on…that’s not the only reason I’m not going. And besides, I would never try to guilt her into staying here just because of that. She’s pregnant, Max, not dying.”

Feeling the last threads of hope that Serena would see the rationality of his side slip away, he tries one last time. “What if she has the baby there? It’s entirely possible that we’ll be there long enough for that to happen.”

Sighing, she looks up at him with nothing but patience and tolerance. “I hate to break it to you, Max. But women give birth every day. And the world keeps right on spinning. The problem here is that you think being pregnant will make Liz weak…vulnerable. But you’re wrong. It’s only made her stronger…you’ve seen it yourself. She’ll be a great asset to you…both militaristic and political.”

“She said something to me earlier…something about carrying the heir to the throne and how that would put her in a powerful position. I assume you both know what she’s talking about?”

Serena glances at Cal and waits for him to answer the question. Cal sighs, his expression one of defeat, and says, “It’s tricky because, technically, she’s not your queen. I don’t have anything to go by except my internal programming, if you will. All I can say for sure is that from the time she stopped being the queen until she became pregnant, I wasn’t compelled to do what she told me. But now…it’s different.”

“Different how?” Max asks him, getting the idea from Cal’s mannerisms that he won’t like the answer.

“Not only do I feel the need to protect her again. But I also have to do what she says…and…” Cal hesitates, uncomfortable with telling Max about whatever’s happened.

“And…” Max prompts.

“Now, Liz wants to test this all out…she’s all wired up to perform some kind of experiment, but…” Cal takes a deep breath and says the rest as quickly as possible. “…I’m pretty sure if it came down to conflicting orders between you and her…hers would override you.”

Max feels all of his bodily functions stop for a moment before he sputters, “I…I don’t understand.”

“While she’s carrying the heir to the throne, Liz has authoritative power over everyone…even the King if it comes down to it.” Serena summarizes for him.

“Does she know this?” Max is in a daze as he stumbles back to the rock Serena’s on and plops down next to her.

“Yes.” Cal tells him.

Forgetting that Cal already told him that she knows, he nods and says, “Right…I…you said that…”

“I know this must be hard for you to hear, Max. And I know what you’re thinking…but you’re wrong.” Serena lays a hand on his arm in comfort.

He looks at her, wondering for a moment if she can read his mind, then thinking it doesn’t matter. His thoughts are probably written all over his face.

“You didn’t condemn Liz…she knows exactly what she wants to do. She’s the bravest person I know, and you should be proud. She knows what she’s doing, Max. Believe me.” She nods her head, hoping that she’s getting through to him.

Max remembers something and whips his head up toward Cal. “You said ‘pretty sure’. But you’re not sure, right? I mean, you could be wrong.”

Cal shrugs and says, “I could be. Doubtful, but I could be. That’s why Liz wanted to test it out.”

“Why haven’t you talked to me about this before now? How has she been running around making all these decisions behind my back and I didn’t know about it?” He feels his anger rise at the situation…especially since this is all happening now…three weeks before he wanted to leave.

“Liz didn’t start talking to us about her plans until right before she came here. And then, she’d only spoken to Michael and Cal as far as I know. It’s not what you think…this has all just happened really since yesterday. And you were a little…incapacitated yesterday.” Serena explains.

Wiping his hands across his face, Max feels completely blindsided…and helpless. Of all the ways he thought this conversation would go today, hearing this about Liz has him completely at a loss. What has he done? His selfishness has destroyed Liz’s life…and contrary to what Serena says, he has condemned her. She’s going to insist on fighting this war with them, and there’s nothing he can do to stop her.

Taking a deep breath, Max stands up. “Let’s go over the Granolith again and then head back.”

~~~~~~~~~~
By the end of the day, Max feels wrung out and tired. He’s been thinking too much and feels an overwhelming need to escape. But as he drives back into Roswell, all he can think about is seeing Liz. So he heads in the direction of the Crashdown, hoping that she’s there.
Surprisingly, he finds a spot right out front and as he turns the engine off, he catches sight of her inside and his heart skips a beat. It’s almost like time has been reversed and he’s a teenager again. She’s wearing the uniform…the one he had so many fantasies about when he was younger. Her hair is up in a ponytail and to him, she looks just like she used to.
Getting himself under control, he walks in and hears the familiar tinkling of the bell over the door. She doesn’t see him so he decides to sit in a booth in what looks like her section. Everything looks almost exactly the same and he’s swept up in the nostalgia. He can remember spending so many afternoons sitting in this very booth just watching her…taking in every detail of her that he could…memorizing her movements.
The smells and the sounds are so familiar that he can almost believe that he’s 15 again. He’s so busy musing over the menu and noting the new items that he doesn’t notice when Liz walks up to his table.
“See anything you like?” His groin tightens when he hears the smooth sound of her voice, but instead of looking up, he smiles.
“Not really. My favorite’s not on here anymore.” He pouts.
Tapping her pen against the front of his menu, she says, “The Sigourney Weaver’s the same thing as the Scully Burger. Dad thought it was time for a change.”
He looks up then, and shakes his head. “Nope. That won’t do.” He makes a show of looking her up and down and he notices the way a blush creeps up to her face. “Get a new job?”
She smiles and says, “Yes…waitressing has always been my dream.”
“When do you get off?”
“Whenever I want.” She saucily replies, one eyebrow quirking up in amusement.
He lets his gaze wander away and he says, “Hmmm…there’s a thought. But I was really just hoping you’d go to dinner with me.”
“All these crazy name changes put you off the food here?” She’s teasing him, but he can see the way she’s studying him. Probably noticing the desert grime on his face.
“I’d just like to have a quiet dinner with you without your parents chaperoning.” He nods toward the back swinging door where her father is trying not to be obvious about watching them talk.
Chancing a side glance toward her father, she does, indeed, catch him watching them and she rolls her eyes. “God, how embarrassing.” She brings her hand up to cover her eyes and asks, “What’d you have in mind?”
Tossing his menu aside, Max slides out of the booth and says, “I’ll pick you up at 7.” On his way out the door, he turns around impulsively and in front of the half-full café he shouts toward the back, “Seven…I’m picking your daughter up at 7 o’clock for dinner, Mr. Parker.” He grins and adds, “If that’s ok with you?”
Jeff Parker just smiles, shaking his head as he rolls his eyes and pushes through the swinging door into the back room. Before he leaves, Max looks toward Liz and sees her covering her bright red face with her hands while all the customers stare between her and Max…most with big smiles on their faces. And he considers his work here done as he walks to his car whistling.
~~~~~~~~~~

On her way through the back room to go upstairs and shower, Liz runs into her dad. “Oh, hey.” She’s still blushing furiously from Max’s scene earlier.

“So…you and Max.” He grins. “I’m starting to get the feeling that seeing us isn’t the only reason you suddenly decided to come home.”

“It’s just dinner.” She turns away slightly, thinking that if he knew she was pregnant he wouldn’t be enjoying this so much.

“Looks like his burns aren’t as bad as they looked last night.” He frowns. “I could have sworn…well, he must be a quick healer.” He shrugs and looks at Liz, hoping for an explanation.

“Oh…yah, he had a few blisters. And we got him some drops for his eyes. He was a lot better this morning.” She cringes at her lame explanation, and hopes that he doesn’t dwell on it.

“Uh huh.” He looks at his watch with a smile and says, “You better get upstairs…you only have an hour.”

She can feel him watching her as she rushes up the stairs and she feels a little guilty. She saw the hopeful look in his eyes. He thinks Max will decide to stay in Roswell to be close to his parents and her dad is probably hoping that she’ll do the same. And having a relationship with his best friend’s son can only help that little plan along.

She can only imagine what the conversations will be like now when her parents and Max’s parents get together. At least Max’s parents know he’s not staying here.

Just before 7, she’s putting the finishing touches on her make-up when she hears her mom knock on the door and peek in. “Hey, I heard you’re going out with Max tonight.”

Liz nods as she puts on some lipstick and sees her mom walk in and sit on her bed. She looks at her mom in the reflection of the mirror and says, “It’s just dinner.”

Nancy smiles and says, “Your father’s working himself into a frenzy with all his speculating.”

“I figured.” Liz rolls her eyes and drops the lipstick tube in her purse. “Well, how do I look?”

“Beautiful, as usual.” Nancy replies. “Liz…I just want you to know how happy I am that you’re home. I know that…things have been…difficult for a while now. But I hope you know that we love you. Nothing could ever change that.”

Liz turns in her chair to face her mom and says, “I love you, too, Mom.”

Smiling as if that wasn’t the point she wanted to make, Nancy says, “I just…I want you to know that you can tell me anything, Liz. And I’ll still love you…no matter what. And I don’t want you to ever feel uncomfortable being here.”

Sensing that her mom is trying to convey some deeper message in her words, Liz starts thinking that maybe she can tell she’s pregnant. Maybe moms have some kind of built-in radar for detecting pregnancies. Should she just tell her? It’s not like she can keep it a secret for much longer anyway. “Mom…I…”

“Lizzie! Max is here!” They both jump and turn toward the door when they hear Jeff’s voice booming down the hallway.

Turning back to face each other, they study each other for a moment…searching…until Nancy stands up with a smile. “Well, you better get out there before your Dad starts telling Max about the wedding plans.”

Liz’s eyes go wide and she grabs her purse before rushing from her room. She walks quickly into the living room and heads straight for Max, grabbing his arm without stopping and dragging him toward the door. “Bye guys!” She calls out behind her as she drags a bewildered Max down the stairs and out onto the street.

“What was that all about?” Max laughs as he opens the car door for Liz.

When he gets into the driver’s seat, she says, “Just rescuing you from my dad and his mission to have us married with a kid, a dog, and a house with a white picket fence just down the street within the next year.”

“Oh.” He starts the car and thinks about how ironic it is that in this timeline Jeff Parker seems to like him so much. Considering in the other timelines he pretty much hated him. “Well, he seems to be taking the news ok.”

When Liz doesn’t say anything he glances over at her and sees her chewing on her bottom lip. “You haven’t told them.” He guesses with a sigh. There goes the Jeff Parker love.

“I haven’t really had the chance. And I kind of wanted to wait, until I was sure everything is ok.”

“What do you mean? Is something wrong?” He swerves a little when he whips his head over to look at Liz and she braces her hands on the door and seat.

“There will be if you don’t watch where you’re going.” She exclaims. When he gets the car back under control, she releases her hold on the seat and says, “Nothing’s wrong. It’s perfectly normal to wait until the twelfth week to tell anyone. Most miscarriages happen during the first three months, so by the twelfth week I’ll feel better about telling people.”

He never thought about that. The only pregnant women he’s ever been around have been co-workers. And he never really paid that much attention to it. He suddenly realizes that he knows nothing about having a baby and he thinks that maybe he should go buy some books tomorrow. But then it crashes in on him that he won’t be here. And if Liz has her way, she won’t either. He makes a mental note now to go to the library tomorrow and scan all the books he can find on pregnancy and childbirth.

Then his thoughts turn to what she said about miscarriages during the first three months. Oh God…they were having sex this morning! That can’t be good. What if he did something to hurt her? Why doesn’t he know anything about this? He searches his memory for any bit of information about pregnant women from the office and comes up with one woman, Jen. She worked in accounts payable and usually ate lunch in the break room at the same time he did. He remembers her complaining to the other women about food she couldn’t eat…how uncomfortable she was…stuff like that. But he doesn’t remember her talking about her sex life. Not that she would with him in the room. The more he thinks about it, the more he panics. And the more he becomes convinced that Liz will not be going with him. Not while he still has breath in his body.

“Max.” He flinches when he feels her hand on his arm and he can tell from her tone that she’s smiling. “Everything’s fine. You’d know it if something was wrong…through your connection to her. So stop panicking.”

“Right…right…I forgot.” He relaxes, then, realizing that she’s right and he grabs onto the thin thread of consciousness in his mind that he knows belongs to his daughter. And he knows that she’s ok. He pulls into a parking space down the street from Senor Chows and asks, “Chinese ok?”

“My favorite.” She smiles and opens the door to get out, just as Max rushes around the car to hold it open for her.

“I know.” He grabs her hand and leads her to the sidewalk before looking around. “Can I…” He holds his hand toward her stomach, silently asking for permission to touch her. She nods and he slides his hand under her silky blouse and places his hand against her bare skin. His connection deepens and he can tell at once that everything is as it should be.

“Feel better?” She asks him when they start walking again.

He smiles sheepishly and says, “Yes, thank you.” They reach the front of the restaurant and he opens the door, standing to the side to let her go in. “Shall we?”

Second, the chinese fortunes in this part are from This site.

And third...well, I don't have a third. So I hope you like the next part and I'll probably be back Monday or Tuesday with a new one.

Part 53

“So, Michael. Are you getting a job, or do you plan to just live off of Maria for the rest of your lives?” Amy asks as she passes a bowl of mashed potatoes to Kyle.

Michael chokes and Maria exclaims, “Mom!”

“Well, honestly Maria…you just spring this whole…marriage thing on us. You don’t even invite your own Mother to the wedding. And we don’t know anything about Michael. You can’t blame me for wanting to make sure he’s good enough for you.”

“Amy, leave them alone.” Jim says, surprising both Maria and Michael. “They’re not kids…I’m sure Maria wouldn’t have married him if he wasn’t good enough.” He looks over at Maria and winks at her before taking a bite of his steak.

There’s an uncomfortable silence around the table when Serena nudges Kyle in the leg. “Oh…uh…so I heard they got a new coach for the football team over in Chisum.” He glances at Serena and sees her rolling her eyes and he shrugs. What’d she expect him to do?

“And what exactly do you and Max do all day? I see you running around town…usually headed for the highway. Where do you go?” Amy continues her interrogation as if she didn’t hear Kyle.

Kyle freezes with his fork halfway to his mouth when he sees the look on Maria’s face. She’s dropped her silverware noisily onto her plate and is pushing away from the table.

Throwing her napkin in her chair, Maria stands up and says, “We’re leaving.” She glances at Michael before turning to go.

Laughing, Amy says, “Come on, Maria. Why are you being so sensitive? They’re simple questions.”

“Because I didn’t come over here so that my husband and I could be interrogated. Michael, let’s go.”

Michael glances over at Kyle and raises his eyebrows, shrugging in resignation before he gets up from the table.

“Michael, sit down.” Amy tells him.

“No. He’s coming with me.” Maria throws back.

“Just because you’re throwing a temper tantrum doesn’t mean Michael should miss out on a good meal. Michael, sit down.” Amy says more sternly.

Michael looks back and forth between the two women and doesn’t know what to do. He looks over at Kyle helplessly but he’s just got a smirk on his face, the bastard.

“Oh for God’s sake.” Jim mumbles before throwing his own silverware down. “Maria, Michael…sit back down.” He turns to Amy and says, “Amy, my lovely wife, please…I love you more than the moon, but could you please just shut up and let those two enjoy their dinner?”

The air stills, as if everyone is holding their breath, and after a good staring contest between Amy and Jim, Amy finally sighs and turns to Maria. “All right…I’m sorry. Come on, sit back down. I won’t ask any more questions.”

Maria looks at her mother skeptically and says, “Promise?”

“I promise.” Amy says with a smile.

Once everyone is seated again, Jim turns to Kyle and says, “Tom Travis is the new coach in Chisum now. I knew him back when he played at UNM. Good guy…they’ll definitely give us a run for our money next season.”

~~~~~~~~~~
Their dinner plates finally cleared, Max leans back in his chair and asks, “What am I gonna do with you?”
Liz grins at him and says, “Well, there are so many answers to that question…I think you need to clarify.” They’ve had a pleasant conversation going throughout dinner…playfully bantering back and forth. She finds it so easy to just talk to him and she knows there can’t be that many people he feels comfortable enough to talk to with his guard down. It seems a little surreal that they’re sitting here having dinner and chatting like they’ve known each other forever.
“In the space of one day, you sweep into town and turn everything upside down. And apparently, you have everyone on your side.” Max leans back in his chair and studies her.
“It wasn’t my intention for there to be sides, Max. I just appealed to everyone’s sense of logic and practicality.” She reaches for the small plate in the middle of the table and picks one of the fortune cookies. She cracks it open and reads her fortune…then bursts out laughing.
“What?” He leans forward with a smile.
Instead of reading it, she hands it over to him so he can see for himself that she’s not making it up. After reading it, he snorts in laughter and tosses it down on the table. Never wear your best pants when you go to fight for freedom.
“I’ll have to keep that in mind.” She says with a grin. “Open yours.”
He eyes his cookie warily before snatching it from the plate. She watches him as he reads it, then rolls his eyes before crumpling it up and throwing it on the table. “Did you do something to these?” He eyes her suspiciously and she smiles.
“I would never mess with conventional Chinese wisdom.” She reaches over and picks his fortune up. The greatest danger could be your stupidity. She laughs and looks up at him…sees him pouting. “I swear…I didn’t do anything to them.” She vehemently denies and can’t contain her laughter.
She can tell he doesn’t believe her and she shrugs, setting his fortune back on the table. Getting her giggles under control, she looks at him in sympathy. “Max…this isn’t a big conspiracy against you. You have to see that there’s merit to my plan.”
“I never said there wasn’t. I just don’t want you in the kind of danger we’re going to be facing. What if something happens to the rest of us? What if you can’t get back and you end up stuck there…alone?” He sighs and leans forward on the table. “I don’t doubt that you’re more than capable of taking care of yourself, but what about the baby? You could end up having to give birth on another planet. How can we hope to protect her then? And then there’s Khivar. We know he’s been gunning to get his hands on my heir. He could capture you….”
“Max.” She reaches forward and grabs his hands. “We can play the ‘what if’ game all night. But you can’t think like that. We can only do our best…and I know that it’ll be enough. If we all work together, we’ll be successful.”
“Do you know that for sure? Have you seen this in one of your future visions?” He’s curious now…having never thought of that.
She frowns and says, “No. But it’s a feeling I have…a very strong one.”
“So I’m supposed to let you go…put you and our daughter in mortal danger…based on a feeling?”
“No. I was hoping it would be because you trust me.” She leans back, pulling her hands away from his, and keeps her gaze steady on him…unwavering. “Because you know I’ll be an asset to you.”
They both sit like that for several minutes. Gazes locked together…both waiting for the other to back down…both studying the other. It’s come down to a battle of wills as they each formulate a defense for the next spoken argument. What will he say next? What will she say next? The waiter comes and goes, and still they keep their eyes on each other.
Liz refuses to give up. She knows this is the right path…the one the Granolith told them to find. She feels it so deeply that to give up on it now would be impossible. She also knows that he sees the truth, but he’s not willing to accept it. Maybe if she weren’t pregnant, he would see things differently…more clearly. But she can’t do anything about that now. She just needs him to look beyond it. To accept the inevitable.
Max admires her determination. Her bravery. And he fully admits that what it all comes down to is fear. Before she came here, he had a plan. He had every scenario thought out…every possibility. And now it’s all being thrown out of whack. Not only is he having to take everyone else into account, he has to work Liz and their baby into the plan. It won’t work…there isn’t enough time. There are too many unknown variables now…and his once, well thought out plan is all shot to hell.
Sighing and finally breaking eye contact, Max lowers his head and asks, “What will you tell your parents?”
Liz feels an incredible sense of triumph and she tries to keep a huge smile from coming to her face…not wanting to disturb Max’s sudden acquiescence. “The truth.”
He looks up at her and says, “That won’t be as difficult as you think.”
“What do you mean?” Her triumph has suddenly turned to confusion.
Taking a deep breath, he doesn’t know any other way to tell her. He can hardly believe it himself. “Your mom knows. She knows you were shot and that I healed you. She knows that it made you…different. And she knows what I am.”
Dumbfounded, Liz can’t speak. Her mom knows? How? And why didn’t she ever say anything? The conversation with her tonight suddenly comes back to Liz and she now knows her mom is waiting for her to say something…to tell her the truth. “How…how long?”
“She told me it was confirmed for her when you went to college. I assume she meant the incident you told me about.” His voice is calm…too calm…and she looks up at him.
“When did she tell you this? Does my dad know, too?” She can’t believe that all these years…all the strained telephone conversations, the tense visits…and her mom already knew.
“About a week ago. We were all at Michael’s for a barbeque. And no, she never told your dad.”
“How can you be so calm about this?” Her panic is starting to rise and she doesn’t really know why. Two minutes ago, she told Max that she was going to tell them the truth anyway. It’s just that now she’s mentally reviewing every conversation she’s ever had with her mother…every look.
He shrugs and says, “I wasn’t when she told me. But you should have been there. She just calmly came over and told me that she knew what I was…what I did to you. Then she just…sort of patted my hand and said I should go get a hamburger.” He laughs, remembering how freaked out he was…and she was acting like it was just a normal conversation.
Shaking her head, Liz says, “Wait a minute. Can we…can we just forget about my mom for a second?” When she has his attention, she asks him…needing the confirmation. “Are you saying that you’ll willingly let me go?”
Max throws some money down on the table and stands up, reaching his hand out for Liz’s. “Let’s go. We’ll talk about this somewhere else.”
Liz lets him lead her out of the restaurant, but instead of heading in the direction of the car, he turns the opposite way. She walks with him, silently, as they turn the corner and walk into the park. Max helps her up to sit on top of a picnic table and he stands in front of her. “Why?”
His question catches her off guard and she looks at him quizzically. “Why?”
“Why is this so important to you?”
She leans forward, wedging her hands underneath her thighs as she swings her legs. Watching her feet swing beneath her…the black sandals with the tiny red flowers hanging precariously from her toes…she thinks about her answer carefully. Because as much as she’s convinced that her plan is best, and even though she truly intends to go whether Max agrees with her or not…she wants him to be ok with it. She wants his approval. “Do you love me?”
Now it’s Max’s turn to be confused. “Of course I do…yes.” He shakes his head with a smile.
“And would you do anything for me? If I was in trouble and you knew you could help me…let’s say I was shot in the middle of a crowded restaurant. Would you risk everything to make me safe?” A slow smile comes to her face, remembering when he did exactly that.
She can see him fighting with himself to not roll his eyes as he says, “That was different.”
“How?” She can’t wait to hear this.
He sputters, not expecting this conversation to be going this way. “I…well, I wouldn’t be…ah, hell Liz. That’s not fair.”
“Yes it is. You’re being a hypocrite, Max. It’s ok to risk everything…to risk your life…for me. Because you love me. But it’s not ok for me to want to do the same.” She cocks her head to the side and says, “So why is this so important to me? My answer is an easy one. Because I love you.”
“Liz…” He doesn’t know what to say…suddenly having lost the wind in his sails for this debate. Why does she have to be so damned stubborn?
“Max.” She responds defiantly, her hands on her hips…begging him to come up with another reason to disagree with her.
He takes a deep breath and takes his time exhaling before saying, “We’re never gonna agree on this.”
“We would if you could just look past your fear. Then you would see that I’m right.” She smirks at him, knowing that she’s not going to change his mind in one night. But they’re running out of time and she’s already thinking ahead.
Raising his eyebrow, Max says, “What’s that saying? ‘I’m always right, even when I’m wrong.’”
“Funny. But I’m not wrong. And you know it…you’re just being stubborn.”
I’m being stubborn?!” He can’t believe she’s calling him stubborn when she’s got the market cornered on hard headedness.
Laughing at the surprised tone of his voice, she pokes him in the chest. “Yup, you.”
“Them’s fightin’ words, missy.” He drawls and grabs her finger.
“Oh yah?” She makes a show of looking him up and down. “I could take you…easy.” She lifts her chin, trying to keep the smile off her face.
“You think so?” He reciprocates the once-over…his gaze lingering a little longer than hers did. “I suppose you do have those…superior powers.”
“You’re right about that.” She pulls her finger from his grip and trails it down the front of his shirt. Her tone turns from teasing to seductive and she remembers a conversation they had in her kitchen in New York. About how she could convince him to do anything by seducing him. At this point she’s willing to stoop to any level.
Max laughs half-heartedly and grabs her hand, placing a small kiss in her palm. “Don’t even think about it.” He turns and places her arm in his, pulling her close. “Come on…let’s go get some ice cream.”
“Party pooper.” She pouts and follows him with a smile.
Later that night, Cal is interrupted from his work by a knocking at his hotel door. When he opens to door to reveal Serena, he has an idea of why she’s here. “Come on in.” He motions for her to follow him into the living room.
Once she’s seated, she doesn’t beat around the bush. “Why aren’t you going with them?”
Sighing with the knowledge that she would harass him about that, he says, “Because I don’t want to. I didn’t see you volunteering.”
“You know I shouldn’t be there with the Granolith while Khivar is in power.” She counters. “I’d be a liability.”
“Max will have all the help he needs without me.” Cal argues before standing up and walking over to the windows that overlook Roswell’s main street. He watches a few cars drive by absently before saying, “You know, when we first crashed here…I hated it. I hated the fact that I was bound and sentenced to protect those pods. And I hated being stuck on this foreign planet that seemed so dull and dusty.”
He turns to face her then. “It all seemed so hopeless. The ship was irreparable, and I thought you’d been killed in the wreckage. So I made a life for myself here. And I like it. Now that I’m finally happy here, I’m not anxious to give it all up.”
She feels his questioning gaze on her. And she knows what he’s thinking. That if he had known she was alive, things might have turned out differently. “You were right…my pod was damaged. And I would have died.”
“You ever gonna tell me what happened? Because I find it hard to believe that the US government mended you back to health and just let you leave of your own free will.” Call pierces her with his gaze. Ever since he found out she was a live, he’s been both relieved…and skeptical. He saw the government take her pod…along with the others. But they assumed she was dead and didn’t try very hard to retrieve her pod from the base that day.
It was hard enough getting the other pods out. They were seen by several people…and they had to kill. He didn’t think he and Browan would be able to save any of the pods but they hit a lucky break when a fire alarm went off and caused a distraction…giving them just enough time to sneak out with the pods. There was no time to look for Serena. And it seemed pointless anyway. In the end, even he didn’t make it out.
“No, they didn’t just let me walk out…but they did repair the pod. And I lived. You sure you wanna hear the rest?” She looks up at him in warning.
He looks at his watch and sees that it’s just after 10pm and he sits across from her. “Sure. I don’t have anything better to do. Maybe we can compare notes on the hospitality of Uncle Sam.” Faced with the knowledge that he failed…that he left one of his charges in that government facility when he swore to protect her…he braces himself for the revelation of the horrors she undoubtedly suffered because of it.
Because he certainly remembers what they did to him during his three year stint there. Not that he feels pain as a human does per se…but after being cut into, electrocuted, poked, prodded, drugged, and a thousand other various torture methods…you start to feel it, no matter what species you are. It wears you down.
She shakes her head and the next words out of her mouth stun him. “It wasn’t like that…not for me. I knew they had one of you…I was told after I came out of my pod. I didn’t know it was you, though. I’m sorry. From what little I learned, they did unspeakable things to you.”
“You were there? When you were born?” He’s completely surprised by this revelation.
“Not that exact base. But yes, I was in their custody.” She explains. “I came out earlier than we had planned…I was around 3 years old. So much time had passed, and I think most of the people in charge had all but forgotten about me...they had a bigger specimen to study. They had me sequestered in a remote section of the base overseen by only one scientist and his small team. Looking like a 3 year old little girl helped in gaining their sympathy…especially of a woman on the team. Her name was Martha.”
“I wasn’t there long after that. Before anyone was notified of my birth, Martha smuggled me out one night and took me to her sister’s house in Texas. I lived there for a few weeks before Martha’s sister took me to California to a friend of hers. That’s where I lived…where I was raised…until I came to Roswell. I never saw Martha or her sister again.”
“Did they know? These people who raised you…did they know what you are?” Cal asks, amazed that anyone working for the government would risk their lives to save an alien child.
“Yes. They knew. And they kept it a secret until they died in a car crash. Drunk driver.”
Cal doesn’t know what to say. It’s incredible that she’s even here…alive. And that complete strangers are responsible. It defies all the odds. “So how’s it that you got all the memories…and they didn’t?”
“You know how pressed for time we were. Koltzor’s team had barely finished the two sets of royals…and you remember how much trouble they had with those. Finding the right synthesis between the DNA and Gandarium was a bitch. I guess by the time they got to me, they got it right.” She shrugs, not remembering what exactly went into the making of her pod…only that it had been done. “They never had time to make a back up for me, so it’s a good thing the first one was successful.”
“I see.” Cal looks toward the windows again and Serena notices his ongoing distraction…recognizes it.
“You still have someone keeping an eye on her?” She asks, knowing he wouldn’t be sitting here if he didn’t.
“Yah. I have ever since the heir was conceived.”
Serena nods and says, “Good idea. She’ll be pissed when she finds out.”
He chuckles and says, “Don’t I know it.” Standing up, he scratches the back of his head in a very human gesture and says, “I got work to do…so if you don’t mind…”
Serena stands as well and walks over to him, raising her hands up to meet his palm to palm. They glow in recognition and she says, “Armin, you’ve been the king’s protector your entire life. As well as your father before you, and his father before him. Please reconsider…for your family’s honor and their legacy. Our king needs you. Now more than ever.” She bows her head and quietly steps away to head for the door. She doesn’t really expect him to say anything before she leaves. But she can’t help but hope he’ll change his mind.
~~~~~~~~~~

It’s time. The words echo through her mind and she bolts upright on her bed. She’s waited a long time for this day. Mere seconds after she receives the message, the lights go out and she’s plunged into darkness. This drives her to action and she immediately goes to her door and finds that it opens easily.

She easily makes her way to her destination in the pitch black. Years of memorizing the corridors of this facility and counting steps are finally paying off. She opens a door and calls out, “Lonnie, let’s go.”

“What the fuck is goin’ on, Tess?” She feels Lonnie step in beside her as they make their way down the hallway. No lights, no alarms…but they can hear the distant sound of confused voices and footsteps headed their way.

“Shut up and stay close.” Tess turns a corner smoothly, confidently. She feels Lonnie’s grip on her belt loop…and she can also feel her adrenaline. They descend a flight of stairs and Tess shushes Lonnie when she starts to ask why they’re going down when they’re already underground. She doesn’t have time to answer questions.

Counting off the steps once they reach the bottom, Tess feels along the wall and finds the grate. They both shield their eyes when a brief glow from Tess’ hands melts the bolts holding the grate in place. Once they crawl into the narrow passage, Tess replaces the grate just as the emergency lights flicker on in the hall outside. “Shit. Go!” She pushes on Lonnie’s ass in front of her, urging her to start crawling.

They make their way through what feels like miles of air ducts, trying to be as quiet as possible. They can now hear the sound of the sirens going off and Tess starts to feel sweat drip from her face and down her chest. For an air duct, she thought it would be cooler.

When they reach what looks like a giant fan, Tess opens a latched door and cracks it open so she can peek out. It’s dark in the room below, but she can see that it’s empty from the soft glow of the computerized heating and cooling units that take up most of the room. She slowly lowers herself out of the duct and falls to the ground…Lonnie following close behind.

“What now?” Lonnie whispers.

Tess turns in a circle, searching, until her eyes land on the door she’s looking for. A large, metal door that looks well-sealed and plastered with bio-hazard warning signs. “This way.”

She walks to the door and uses her powers to break the seals and the lock and the door swings open smoothly. But the smell coming from the other side is noxious and they both cover their noses with their hands.

“You gotta be shittin’ me. I ain’t goin’ in there.” Lonnie complains as Tess walks forward.

“Then stay here.” Tess says without looking back. She continues into the chamber, knowing Lonnie will follow and she hears Lonnie close the door behind her, sealing it. They’re in a large chamber that goes up about three levels above them. The floor is one gigantic grate and Tess can tell that the smell is coming from below them. Must be their feed into the sewer. All around the walls there are valves and right in front of them, Tess sees what she’s looking for. A ladder attached to the wall that goes up one flight to a large opening.

They climb up and make it to the opening quickly…trying to escape the foul smell. It’s dark in this passage, but bigger than the air ducts they just had to crawl through. They can at least walk in a crouch instead of crawl. The good news is that the farther along the walk, the less it smells and the cooler the air gets.

Tess can almost feel it…smell it. Fresh air. She sees a dull light coming from up ahead and she starts walking faster. Slowly, she starts to see her surroundings…damp cement walls. The ground beneath them is covered in about an inch of water.

They finally reach the source of the light and find that it’s a shaft that goes up directly above them. There’s a ladder fused to the wall and it looks like they’ll need to climb about three stories to reach the top. Without hesitating, Tess grabs the bottom rung and hauls herself up and starts climbing. She keeps her eyes on the top of the shaft…her freedom getting closer and closer.

Three years. She’s waited for this day for three years. As she gets closer, she sees two familiar faces looking through the grate at the top, shining a flashlight down. Skins. Almost laughing with relief, she climbs faster…one thought ricocheting around her head. She’ll make them pay for doing this to her. The shapeshifter…the king…and most of all…Ava.

That bitch betrayed her. And she’ll make sure Khivar makes an example out of her. That is, if she doesn’t kill her first.

mitra, Cal can't kill any of the hybrids. It's in his programming.

vegas, the faces were familiar to Tess...not us. She'd been with the Skins for years, so she recognized them.

Thanks everyone for sticking with this for so long. I bet you're all glad we've finally passed the half-way mark. HA! Kidding.;) Anyway, the next part is all about Alex and Kyle and their love for each other. Ok, maybe not the love part, but it's definitely Alex-centered. :lol: I'll probably be back Thursday with a new part because FRIDAY IS MY BIRTHDAY and I don't think I'll be home much. I love birthdays...especially when they involve flaming deserts and singing waiters.:lol:

Part 54

As his small commuter plane taxis to a stop at the Roswell airport, Alex looks out the small window to his left at the desert landscape. When he told his boss he was taking an indefinite leave of absence yesterday, he wasn’t exactly happy about it. But continuing to take impromptu vacation time wasn’t really fair to the other people on his team since they have to pick up his slack when he’s gone.

But when Isabel asked him to come earlier than he’d planned, he heard something in her voice that made him think maybe he should plan on being in Roswell for a while. He doesn’t know what’s going on, but something is. And finding out Liz is pregnant is helping fan the flames of his apprehension.

His boss told him that when he was ready to come back there would always be a place for him there…maybe not the same position, but a job. He guesses that has to be good enough.

He looks down at the current issue of People he bought at the airport in New York and frowns at the picture inside of Maria walking down the street in Roswell. She’s wearing a baseball hat, a t-shirt and jeans and she’s carrying a bag of what looks like groceries. The caption says, “Maria Deluca continues her unexpected break from touring in Roswell, New Mexico (Mar. 3).”

It’s disappointing that the press still seem to be hounding her here. He sees candid shots of her around Roswell almost every day in magazines and newspapers. The pictures are all obviously taken from afar with a telephoto lens. Sometimes she’s with Michael, who’s always identified as her “mystery man”. At least the press didn’t get wind of their impromptu wedding in Vegas. Which is surprising considering how much money some publications would give for that information. He suspects that some alien hocus pocus was involved.

When he steps off the plane, he’s hit with the dry heat and desert smell that he loves. Smiling, he spots Isabel and Liz just inside the doors to the terminal and he picks up his pace. When the doors swish open, Isabel immediately launches into his arms and he laughs, struggling to stay upright. “Hey now…let’s try to stay vertical.”

She pulls away and lightly smacks his arm as she rolls her eyes. Liz is next and she hugs him tightly. “I’m so glad you’re here.” She doesn’t let go right away and he furrows his brow, glancing at Isabel.

“I missed you, too. But I just saw you a few days ago…what’s wrong?” He gently peels Liz away and looks down at her with a smile.

Liz glances at Isabel before saying, “Nothing. Can’t I just be happy to see my best friend?” She plasters a smile on her face and loops her arm through his as Isabel does the same with his other arm.

“Oookay. Well, I hope you two have been working out. I brought lots of bags.” He walks with them toward the baggage claim arm in arm, convinced now that something is seriously wrong.

~~~~~~~~~~
After Isabel and Liz get Alex settled into the hotel, they take him out to the Indian reservation. Everyone’s been in the cave with the Granolith most of the day.
“So uh…what’s going on out here? You guys didn’t start ritual sacrificing, did you?” Alex winds his way through the trees and brush behind Isabel and Liz. They’ve been strangely quiet since they picked him up from the airport.
Liz turns back toward him and rolls her eyes. “Alex.”
Isabel pipes up from next her and says, “Actually, we just stick to the anal probing and tooth extraction. You’re next on the list.”
Liz snorts in laughter and turns to Isabel. “That was good.”
As they approach the cave, Alex sees a figure waiting at the opening. When they get closer, he sees that it’s Max and he’s surprised when Liz rushes forward and Max grabs her around the waist and kisses the top of her head. When did those two get together? And when did Max become so…happy? Last time he saw Max, he looked like he was two steps away from slitting his wrists.
“Hey Alex.” Max calls in greeting.
“Max” Alex says, confused. Is Max actually…smiling? Weird.
Max looks over to Isabel and says, “We’ll just…be in here. Take your time.”
She nods and steps closer to Alex as Max and Liz walk into the cave. Liz looks over her shoulder at Alex and offers him a small smile. One he can’t return. He turns to Isabel ready to demand what’s going on.
“You’re probably wondering what this is all about.” She beats him to the punch and he raises his eyebrows as if to say, ‘duh’.
She looks down to the ground and leads him over to a clearing and pushes him toward a rock to sit on. He does so slowly, watching her pace a little in front of him. Suddenly, she stops and faces him. “There’s no easy way to tell you this, Alex. So I guess I should just come out and say it.”
Now he’s really getting worried. He can see a fine misting in her eyes and her skin is slightly flushed. Whatever it is she has to tell him…she doesn’t want to.
“I’m going with Max.” She says quickly.
It takes him a moment to realize what she’s saying and he feels the blood drain from his face and the breath woosh out of his lungs.
“We’re all going. Michael, Ava, Zan…and…” She hesitates, not wanting to tell him this. But they agreed that she should be the one to tell him the whole thing. “…and Liz.”
Shaking his head, Alex stands up. “Wait…wait…what do you mean, Liz? You can’t be serious!”
Feeling a slight pang of jealousy that hearing Liz was leaving brought about a reaction from him instead of hearing she’s leaving, she quickly shakes it off. Of course he should be more concerned for Liz. They’re best friends…they’ve known each other for years. They’re practically brother and sister, they’re so close. It still hurts a little. “I’m sorry, Alex. But she’s the one who decided...we all decided.”
Turning around in agitation, Alex clenches his fists. “Where’s Max? Why is he letting her do this? Is he insane? I’ll fucking kill him.” He stalks off toward the cave, not noticing the way Isabel’s face falls as she watches him go.
He spots Max immediately as he walks into the cave and he’s taken aback momentarily when he sees how many people are in there. As he descends on Max, he sees Michael rise up from the floor…probably sensing how mad he is. “Who the fuck do you think you are?” Alex stops in front of Max and turns his back toward their audience.
“Alex.” Liz puts her arm around Alex and tries to pull him away. But Alex won’t budge. “It’s my decision, Alex. Not anyone else’s.”
Alex doesn’t looks at Liz, instead keeping his gaze on Max and feeling a little satisfaction that Max has to look up at him due to his height. “You know, I would totally expect this from Liz. Because she’s a good person…a noble person. Someone who thinks about everyone before herself. And because she would do anything to help someone she cares about. So what does that say about you that you’re letting her hop on a spaceship and go fight a war on another planet that she has nothing to do with?”
“I’m the one that decided, Alex. Max doesn’t want me to go any more than you do…so don’t take it out on him.” Liz is trying in vain to turn Alex away from Max and to look at her. “Alex, look at me.” He does…reluctantly. “I wish I could make you understand…but it’s so complicated.”
“It’s not complicated, Liz. You’re human. I know you wanna help, but this isn’t your fight. How can you possibly help them?” He turns to Max and asks, “How can you let her do this?”
Max raises an eyebrow and says, “I wouldn’t say ‘let’ is the right word.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Alex narrows his eyes at Max.
Max sighs and says, “It means that I don’t want her to go anymore than you do. But I’m sure you know that once she decides to do something, there’s no talking her out of it.”
Alex turns to Liz, questions written all over his face.
“This is my decision, not anyone else’s. I’m going.” Liz raises her chin to show him she’s not about to change her mind.
Alex backs away from Max slowly and turns around to see everyone staring at him. He looks at Maria and asks, “Are you going, too?”
She shakes her head sadly as she moves in closer to Michael’s side. Alex watches as Michael puts a protective arm around her and he looks over at Kyle and Serena. “What about you two?”
“We’re sitting this one out.” Kyle says with obvious relief.
Looking around the cave at everyone, Alex lets his shoulders sag before he turns back to Liz. “I can’t believe this.” He presses his palms against his eyes, feeling the beginnings of a headache setting in. Taking a few steps away toward the entrance of the cave he looks back at Liz briefly and repeats, “I can’t believe this.” He turns and stumbles slightly as he walks out of the cave, intending to go back to the car and drive back to Roswell. He needs to get away from this.
“Alex.” He hears Liz calling after him and he turns to see her and Maria standing at the cave opening watching him go. But he shakes his head and turns back around to head toward the car.
~~~~~~~~~~

“Well, that went well.” Maria says sarcastically as she grabs Liz’s hand.

Liz reluctantly watches Alex walk further away, wanting to run after him but knowing that he needs some time to process everything he just heard. A sound to her left gets her attention and she looks over to see Isabel sitting on a rock close to the entrance of the cave.

Squeezing Maria’s hand and giving her a look that says she should go back in, she walks over to Isabel and says, “I guess you heard everything Alex said?”

Isabel looks up at her blankly and nods her head. She’s clearly upset, but there are no tears in her eyes. Just a look of utter disappointment.

“He’s just in shock. Give him a little time to come to terms with it.” Liz kneels down in front of her and puts her hand on Isabel’s knee. “It has to be hard for him to find out that you’re leaving when he thought you’d be staying here with him.”

Isabel laughs without humor and says, “But that’s just it…he wasn’t upset at all that I’m leaving.”

“Oh, Isabel. I know that’s not true.” Liz says in sympathy. “You saw how upset he was.”

“Yes, I did. I saw how upset he was that you’re leaving. He didn’t say one word about me.” Isabel stands up and brushes the dirt off her pants before raising her head high. Brushing past Liz, she walks into the cave to see what they’ve been doing all day. Might as well get something productive done today.

But when she walks in, she sees that no one is working. Instead, they all turn to look at her expectantly. “What?”

And she realizes that they all probably heard her and Liz talking just a minute ago and she recognizes the looks of pity on their faces. “Stop looking at me like that and fill me in on what you’ve been doing today.” She walks over to the makeshift table that’s been set up and starts looking over the drawn plans that litter the top. Michael joins her, immediately followed by Ava and she’s relieved when they finally get down to business.

Sitting at a corner table in a bar across the street from the hotel, Alex sips his third drink and welcomes the numbness. He doesn’t want to think anymore. Thinking makes his head hurt. Drinking is good. So he sits and stares at his drink as he swirls the small straw around, making the ice cubes clink against the glass.

He doesn’t notice that someone has come in and taken the seat across the table until he hears a throat clearing. Slowly looking up without lifting his head, he sees Kyle. “Want a drink? They have more over there.” He waves absently toward the bar.

Kyle signals for the bartender and orders a beer before turning his attention back to Alex. “So. How’s it going?”

Alex snorts and lifts his glass for a drink. “Peachy. My girlfriend and best friend are flying to another planet in a few weeks. You?”

“I’m ok. Just the usual Martian turmoil…pretty normal around my house.” Kyle shrugs and smiles his thanks to the bartender when he brings his beer.

Alex drains his glass and tells the bartender to bring him another. “So how’d you take it? When you found out about Serena?” He’s wanted to ask Kyle this for a while, but they never seem to have any time alone together.

Kyle chuckles and says, “Yah…not so good, I’m afraid.” He takes a long pull of his beer and wipes his mouth. “I’m lucky she even talked to me again after that.”

“Was it when you slept together for the first time?” Alex asks, the alcohol doing nothing to censor his thoughts.

Kyle nods and notices Alex nodding along with him so he assumes that Alex knows all about the alien sex. “At least you knew that something weird might happen before. I was slightly freaked out.”

“Yah, it’s…different.” Alex fidgets with his empty glass until the bartender comes over with his fresh one.

Kyle watches Alex for a few moments, trying to figure out what exactly is bothering him the most. That his girlfriend’s an alien and that fact just hit home for him today. That his best friend is pregnant with an alien baby. That they’re both leaving him here to go to another planet. Or that one, or both of them might die in the process. “So. I have a question. You’re in on this big secret…you have this knowledge that like, 6 billion other people on the planet don’t. Would you just give that up…walk out of here and go back to being plain ol’ Alex Whitman?”

Alex’s head shoots up, his gaze burning into Kyle, startling him. “What’d I say?” Kyle scratches at his ear self-consciously wondering what he said that has Alex looking at him like he has a giant boil on his forehead. “By ‘plain’, I didn’t mean boring or anything.”

Alex shakes his head and says, “Nothing. Just something from…before.”

“Before? Oh! You mean before. Man…I wish I could have seen that.” Kyle shakes his head with a smile and takes a sip of his beer.

“No you don’t.” Alex says sadly, once again staring down into his drink. “It wasn’t pretty.”

“Yah, you’re probably right. But uh…we were friends, right? In those other timelines?”

“We were.” Alex looks up at Kyle. “In one, anyway. The other…kind of. It was sort of difficult, me being dead and all.”

“Oh…yah. Sorry about that.”

Alex bursts into laughter and says, “How ridiculous is this conversation? You’re apologizing for me dying in another lifetime.”

Kyle joins him and says, “Well, it seemed like the thing to do.”

When his laughter dies down, Alex says, “This just sucks. You know? I finally find this…amazing person. And she loves me. Me! Alex ‘The Dodgeball King’ Whitman.”

Kyle grins and nods his head. “They’ll be back, man.” Off Alex’s doubtful look, he adds, “Maybe…hopefully.”

Alex sips at his drink as Kyle works hard to catch up with him…finishing off two more beers as they sit in silence. Finally, Alex says, “Hey. You remember when I put super glue in Mr. Seligman’s chair?”

Kyle snorts in laughter. “That was hilarious! He walked around the rest of the day with little pieces of paper towel taped over the holes in his ass!”

“Yah, that was good.” Alex laughs and orders another drink.

“Oh! How about that time you electrified Mr. Hoffman’s desk? That one was classic!”

Alex smiles and shakes his head. “Ah man, I almost got suspended for that.”

“You’re lucky. All the teachers loved you.” Kyle laments. “I, on the other hand, got suspended for making out in the eraser room.”

“Mmm…the eraser room.” Alex says in a dreamy voice. “Alas, I only got to partake of the joys of the eraser room once with Molly.”

“So uh…you and Molly. Did you…?” Kyle leers across the table with a grin and Alex rolls his eyes.

“The summer after graduation. After that party where you sliced your ass open on the Sullivan’s fence.” They both start laughing at that, then Alex gets serious. “Dude, you’re lucky that’s all you sliced open.”

Kyle’s eyes get big and he agrees. “I know. That was scary.”

They both look at each other before busting out in laughter again. They’re getting a little loud and attracting attention from other people in the bar now. After two hours, Alex decides he’s probably had too much to drink and pays the tab. “Well, at least I can just walk back to the hotel.”

“No! Come on…let’s go to the Crashdown for pie!” Kyle slurs as he stands up from the table on unsteady legs.

“Oooohh…pie.” Alex stands with him. “Pie sounds good.”

“We can walk. It’s just a couple blocks away.” Kyle grabs his jacket and heads for the door, Alex eagerly following.

When they reach the street, Kyle zips his jacket up. “Damn, it’s cold out.”

Alex looks at him incredulously. “Cold?! You’ve gotta be kidding. It’s downright balmy.”

Kyle starts laughing as Alex stumbles on a crack in the sidewalk. “You better pay attention. Or I’ll have to arrest you for drunk and disorderly.”

“That’s pretty funny coming from you, Deputy.” Alex slurs. “Let’s compare our drunk and disorderly arrests, shall we? I believe I have none and you have…what is it, two?”

“Hey, that second one doesn’t count. My dad was just trying to teach me a lesson.” Kyle argues. “And those were both when I was under 18. They don’t count.”

“True…that’s true.” Alex agrees. “I guess we’re even then.”

When they stumble through the front doors of the Crashdown laughing, they freeze at the sight that greets them. “Oh shit.” Kyle mumbles and tries to move behind Alex.

“Kyle Valenti! Where in the hell have you been?” Serena pops up off the stool she was sitting in at the counter and storms over to him.

“I was with Alex.” Kyle says in a small voice.

“You said you were going to the station. For ten minutes! That was three hours ago!” Serena studies the two of them closely and tilts her head. “You’re drunk.” She crinkles her nose in disgust.

Alex glances over at the counter and sees Liz, Max, Cal, Maria, Michael and Isabel watching. He tries to grin in apology, but no one smiles back. “I wouldn’t say we were drunk.” He tries to help Kyle out, and fails when he realizes his words came out a little slurred. He steps away from Kyle and apologizes. “I’m sorry I got you in trouble, Kyle.”

Kyle grabs his shoulder and says, “S’ok my man.”

“Why did you turn your phone off?” Serena asks Kyle as she leads them to a nearby table. Liz walks over with two big glasses of water and sets them down.

Falling into a chair, Kyle says, “Oh…yah, sorry. I had some serious matters to discuss with Alex and didn’t want any interruptions.”

“Yah, serious matters.” Alex agrees while nodding his head before he looks at Kyle in confusion. “What serious matters?”

Kyle opens his eyes wide and not so subtly jerks his head in Isabel’s direction. “You know…the irlfriendgay oingay on the aceshipspay.”

“Huh?” Alex starts to wonder how drunk he really is.

“Pig Latin, Alex. Geez. ‘The girlfriend going on the spaceship’. That’s what he said.” Maria says with a dramatic eye roll.

“Oh…yah.” Alex looks at Serena and says, “We did talk about that. But then we sort of got to reminiscing and I guess we lost track of time. Sorry.” He looks over to the others and repeats, “Sorry.”

“It’s alright. This just isn’t the time to be disappearing…we were worried.” Serena stands up and walks over to the counter to get her purse. “Cal, can you sober him up for me?”

“Hey…that’s ok. I don’t uh…I’ll just sleep it off, honey.” Kyle stands up and shakes his head frantically at Serena.

Cal grabs his key lime pie to-go box and stands up. “Well, now that the prodigal humans have been found, I’m going back to the hotel to enjoy this delicious pie.”

They all watch Cal as he leaves the Crashdown shaking his head with a grin on his face. When he’s gone, Serena looks over toward Max and Liz. “Well someone needs to sober them up.”

“I say we make them suffer.” Maria offers without sympathy.

“Liz…please? I don’t wanna deal with him like this.” Serena pleads.

Smiling, Liz says, “Sure. But I’m only doing it for you.”

“I’ll do it.” Max grabs Liz’s arm before she can walk away. She rolls her eyes at his protectiveness, but relents and lets him do it.

It doesn’t take more than a minute and once Kyle is sober again, he looks over at Alex…who has his head resting in his hand on the table. “He had more to drink than I did.”

Nodding, Max places a hand over Alex’s heart and on his head…removing all the traces of alcohol from his blood. When he’s finished, Max steps back and says, “It’s late. I’m going home.” He turns to Isabel and asks, “You wanna ride with me?” With how things happened today, he’s not sure if she’s still planning on staying with Alex at the hotel or if she wants to go back to the house instead.

Isabel looks from Max to Alex. He looks up at her but she can’t tell what he’s thinking. She hasn’t talked to him since he walked away from her at the reservation. Making a quick decision, she turns to Max and says, “Yah, thanks.” Grabbing her purse she breezes through the Crashdown, past Alex, and out the front door.

Alex watches her go with a sigh as Max tells Liz goodbye and follows Isabel out to his car.

Michael gets up to leave, just as Serena is pulling Kyle out the door. “You wanna ride back to the hotel?” He asks Alex.

Alex looks up at Liz for a moment before saying, “No…thanks, though. I can walk.”

Maria gives him a hug on her way out with Michael. When they’re gone, Liz walks over and sits down next to Alex at the table. She doesn’t say anything, just looks at him in expectation.

“I’m sorry.” He’s not sure what all he’s apologizing for, so he hopes this covers it all.

“I know.”

“I don’t want you to go.” He’s pretty sure she knows this, but he has to say it anyway.

“I know.”

He grins and says, “I am the ultimate power.”

She grins back and punches him lightly in the arm. “I know.” She rolls her eyes as she says this, but he’ll take what he can get.

“So, on a scale of one to ten…how much did I fuck up with Isabel today?” He didn’t miss the look on her face when she left and he knows that he hurt her earlier when he went off about Liz leaving.

Liz raises her eyebrows and says, “About a twelve. You hurt her feelings…a lot.”

He looks down at the table and curses under his breath. Liz tilts his head up with her thumb and says, “You probably didn’t do irreparable damage, but I’d say you have some serious damage control to do.”

Alex nods in agreement. “I should probably get started with that.” He stands up then and gives Liz a hug. “I’m really sorry…I just…I love you. I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

“Yah, I know that. But I don’t think Isabel does.” She pulls away and gives him a friendly push toward the door. “You better go make sure she does.”

He grins and backs out the door slowly before turning and running down the street. Liz watches him go as she shakes her head with a smile and turns the lights off.

Sternbetrachter, Alex will be explaining and aplogizing in this part. Don't be too hard on the guy. He just got a bombshell dropped on him.;) And I actually had a friend in high school who that happened to (slicing his ass open on an iron fence). At the time it was pretty scary...now we can laugh until we pee our pants about it.:lol:

woodwinds, Sense of doom? Hmmm...could be...could be. I too wish we could have seen more of Alex and Kyle together on the show. I thing they would have been great.

RedRoze, Well, Max hasn't 100% given his consent for Liz to go. He's just kind of avoiding it at the moment. He doesn't want to fight about it, so he's choosing the route of denial for now. It'll get settled...soon. Jim Valenti's a smart man.;)

Itzstacie, frenchkiss, VeronicB, DreamKeeper, Yup...Alex and Liz have been friends since grade school. They've lived together for years. It's definitely devastating to him to hear that she's doing this. She's also the one he could lash out at...and about...comfortably without feeling like he's stepping over boundaries.

BelevnDreamsToo, Leave it to Maria to find the best way to punish someone.;)

Kath, Max really is having a hard time coming to terms with Liz going. Max is kind of like my subconscious...he's the one who thinks the things that I'm thinking. But Liz, like in most of my fics, she just takes over and always gets what she wants.

vegas, I love Alex and Kyle. This is actually the first opportunity I've ever had to include them both in a fic because in my others, Alex is dead. They definitely have a great chemistry together.

Wow, I have to say the response to Alex's outburst at the cave kind of caught me off guard. Yes, it was a crappy thing to do, but Alex isn't perfect. He didn't really have a chance to respond and, like I said above, he lashed out in the direction he felt more comfortable lashing out in...Liz and Max.

I hope you guys have a great weekend and I'll see you on Monday!

Part 55

“So, you’re gonna talk to your mom tomorrow?” Max is lying on his bed with the lights out, talking on the phone with Liz.

“I think so. I’m a little nervous about it, though.” He hears a rustling sound and her voice is muffled while she talks. “I know I shouldn’t be…it’s not like she doesn’t know already.”

“Are you in bed?”

“I am now.” She answers.

“Maybe I should come over.” He half hopes she says yes, even though he’s dead tired.

She laughs a little and says, “Probably not a good idea. My dad was still up when I came upstairs.” She laughs some more and adds, “God, I sound like a kid…worried my dad might catch me with my boyfriend.”

“Hmmm…is that what I am? After this morning’s events, I just assumed I was your sex toy.”

“I warned you.” He can hear her smiling through the phone and he wonders if he’ll be getting another early morning visit from her tomorrow. He can’t say he’d be extremely disappointed waking up to Liz crawling through his window and attacking him again. Better than waking up to the alarm clock.

“Yes, you did. But I can’t help wondering how you’ve managed for the last three months without me.” He teases.

His smile drops from his face when she answers, though. “Oh…well, I had a substitute to take your place.”

“A wh…what?” Now he sits up in bed. Was she sleeping with someone else over the last few months? The thought makes his blood boil while at the same time he knows that he left her. She had every right to do whatever she wanted. But it still has his adrenaline pumping.

“Mr. Blue.” She says simply.

“Mr. Blue?” He parrots, not thinking clearly. What kind of name is that?

She doesn’t say anything for a few moments and he wonders if she’s gonna say anything else at all. “My vibrator.”

He almost drops the phone. “Your vibrator?” Images of Liz pleasuring herself start flying through his brain and he feels his groin tighten.

“Maria got it for me a couple of years ago for my birthday. It’s blue. Hence the name.”

“Uh huh.” Frankly, he barely processes what she’s saying…those pictures still running around behind his eyelids.

“Max? You’re not jealous of my vibrator, are you?”

“Wha…no, no…of course not.” He slides back down in his bed, debating wildly about going over there right now and mentally calculating how long it would take him. He looks over at his clock. No, it’s too late. And he can tell that she’s enjoying teasing him way too much.

“Good. I wouldn’t want there to be any animosity between the two of you.” She jokes, clearly enjoying getting him ruffled.

“I’m sure.” He smiles and decides to turn the tables on her. “So uh…what are wearing?”

She looks down at the holey sweatpants she’s had since college and the paint splattered t-shirt she got at a Dave Matthews concert she went to ten years ago and says, “Nothing.” She smiles when she hears him suck in a breath.

He closes his eyes and reaches his hand down into his boxers. “Mmm…nothing sounds good.”

~~~~~~~~~~
Isabel can’t stop thinking about Alex as she lies in her bed. She can hear Max talking on the phone…probably with Liz by the sound of it. She contemplates trying to dreamwalk Alex, but figures he’s probably not asleep yet.
She starts rethinking what she could have done differently. Should she have told him over the phone before he got here? Maybe she should have told him as soon as his plane landed…or maybe Liz should have been the one to tell him.
Sighing, she realizes it’s too late to start thinking about what ifs. What’s done is done. And in the end, no matter how they told him or who told him, his reaction would have been the same. Has she been wrong all this time about his feelings for her? Granted, they haven’t been dating all that long, but she really thought he felt the same way about her that she felt about him.
A noise from her window gets her attention and she looks over. Another sound…like something hitting the glass…and she gets out of bed and cautiously makes her way to the window. The only person she can think of who would come to her window is Michael…like he did when they were kids.
She pulls back the curtain and peeks out the side and sees Alex standing about ten feet away. She opens the window and asks, “Were you throwing rocks at my window?”
He smiles sheepishly and drops the handful of small rocks in his hand. “Yah.”
“Why didn’t you just knock?”
He shrugs. “I don’t know. I thought I’d try to be romantic like they are in the movies. But your bedroom’s on the first floor, so it kind of blows the whole ‘Romeo and Juliet’ vibe with the rock throwing.”
She wonders if he’s trying to act like nothing happened. “Oh.” She blinks a couple of times and asks, “What are you doing here?”
He takes a step forward and pulls his hand out from behind his back. He holds a bunch of wildflowers toward her and says, “All the flower shops are closed. So I drove all over the place looking for flowers I could pick and finally found a field just outside of town.” He walks toward her and hands them to her. “I considered picking some roses from Mrs. Sanchez’s yard, but I was saving that as a last resort.”
Isabel takes the flowers and looks back up at him. “Thanks.” She waits for him to say something, to explain what he’s doing here. To explain why he reacted the way he did earlier. To explain why he just ran off without saying anything to her. To explain what Kyle was talking about earlier at the Crashdown. At least, she hopes that’s why he’s here.
But before he can say anything, they hear a moan coming from the window next to hers. It’s cracked open slightly and leads to Max’s room. “Oh…Liz…”
They both look toward it and Isabel rolls her eyes. “Oh God, I think he’s having phone sex with Liz. Let me go put these in water and I’ll meet you out front.”
Alex nods his agreement and hurries toward the front of the house. It doesn’t take Isabel long to join him and they both sit in the chairs on the front porch.
“So.” Isabel clasps her hands in front of her, suddenly regretting her choice of pajama wear tonight. Of course she had to pick the old gym shorts and sweatshirt. Why can’t she be caught sleeping in a sexy negligee?
“I owe you an apology.” Alex starts, trying to put the words together in his head that he wants to say without it coming out sounding like a canned speech.
“You don’t owe me anything, Alex.” Isabel answers, causing Alex to sigh with the coolness of her attitude. She’s built up that impenetrable defense and he has a feeling he’ll need a sledgehammer to get back through.
“Yes, I do. You called and asked me to come here because you said you needed me. And instead of doing what I had intended to do…support you and listen to what you had to tell me…I ran off at the mouth like an out of control freak. And then I just leave you there without saying anything. It wasn’t right…and…and I wish I could go back and do it over again. And I understand if you’re completely pissed off at me right now. But I am sorry. I want you to know that.”
Isabel shakes her head and lets out a sound of disbelief before standing up and standing at the top of the steps, looking out over the front yard and street. “You know, I would probably be more understanding, happy even, if you had done all those things…for me.” She turns around and faces him. “Don’t get me wrong. I’m really not trying to be the jealous girlfriend. I know how much Liz means to you, and I’m glad that the two of you are so close…really. And maybe I’m being a little shallow and self-centered about this, but I told you I was leaving the planet. And the only thing you could hear me saying was that Liz was leaving. You barely…no, you didn’t acknowledge me at all as soon as Liz’s name came out of my mouth. That’s why I’m hurt.”
By the time she’s finished talking, she has pools of tears at the bottom of her eyes and she turns away, not wanting him to see her cry about this. “I mean, God Alex…you waited almost twelve hours to even come talk to me about it. It makes me feel…unimportant to you.”
Alex stands up and takes a step toward her. “Isabel, I…I didn’t mean to hurt you. You have to believe me. Of course I care that you’re leaving.” He stops when she doesn’t turn around. “When you told me you were leaving, my heart literally stopped. And then…Jesus, I didn’t even have any time to react, let alone process what you were saying before you were telling me that Liz was going too. In less than a minute you completely destroyed me.” His voice cracks at the end with emotion and he walks to the end of the porch to get his emotions under control.
Isabel turns around and quietly says, “We all decided that it would be best for me to just tell you. I wish I wouldn’t have had to.”
“What, did you guys all have a meeting to figure out the best way to tell me that the two most important people in my life are leaving me? Must have been a cheerful gathering.” His tone is dripping with sarcasm and for the first time ever, he wishes he were in New York instead of with Isabel right now. Because being with her now, knowing she’s leaving him, hurts too much.
“I don’t wanna go, Alex. And I don’t wanna leave you.” She drops down in her vacated chair and buries her face in her hands. “I’m so scared.”
When he hears the child-like fear in her voice, he turns around and silently curses himself for making her cry. He’s been so focused on how this is affecting him, and how much this is hurting him, that he didn’t stop to think about how Isabel feels about leaving. He’s already seen Liz’s determination to go, so he didn’t even think that she might not be just as determined.
Crossing the porch and dropping to his knees in front of her, he puts his arms around her. “Shhh. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” He rubs his hand down her back, bringing his other to the back of her head to stroke her hair.
Sliding out of the chair, she curls up in his lap on the floor of the porch and lets him hold her…rocking her as he whispers apologies. When her tears let up she says, “I’m such a coward. I’m not brave like Liz. She’s…she’s so strong, and so determined. And all I can think about is how scared I am that I might not be coming back.”
“Isabel, you’re the strongest person I know.” She snorts in disbelief and he continues. “I’m serious. You are so in control and it seems like everything is so easy for you. You’re scared of the unknown…anyone would be. It’s ok to be scared. But you have to believe you’re coming back. I need you to believe it.”
She’s silent for a few moments and he almost thinks she’s fallen asleep when he hears her whisper, “Am I really one of the most important people in your life?”
He smiles and tilts her chin up to look at him. “You shouldn’t have to ask me that. I don’t know what I’d do if I ever lost you.” He kisses her forehead and asks, “Are you sure about this? It doesn’t sound like Max would mind if you stayed here.”
She rolls her eyes and says, “Yah, well, Max wouldn’t mind if we all stayed here. I have this feeling…and I think I have to go.”
Alex sighs and closes his eyes, leaning his cheek against the side of her head. “I wish…I wish we had more time.”
She smiles and says, “I’m glad you’re here. Was it difficult for you to get away from work?”
“Not really. I sort of quit.”
Sitting up so she can see him, she exclaims, “You quit?! You mean, like forever quit?”
He shrugs and says, “That’s usually how it works. But Bill told me there’d be a position for me when I decide to come back.”
Not believing he quit his job just because she called and asked him to come sooner, she doesn’t know what to say. “Alex…I’m sorry. I know how important your job is.”
“Never as important as you.” He stands up, pulling her with him. “So would it be too presumptuous of me to ask if you’ll come stay at the hotel with a poor unemployed human? ”
Grinning, she says, “Let me go pack a bag.” She turns toward the door and looks over her shoulder. “I just hope Max is off the phone by now.” She smiles, leaving him laughing on the porch.
~~~~~~~~~~

At eight the next morning, Nancy Parker is just getting ready to join her husband down in the café when she hears a knock at the door. She’s surprised when she sees who it is. “Max! What are you doing here so early in the morning?” She steps aside to let him in the apartment.

He holds up a bag and she can tell that it contains freshly baked pastries. “Thought I’d bring breakfast for Liz. And you, or course…there’s enough for everyone.” He smiles shyly, not really knowing what to say around her.

She smiles and says, “I already ate, but I’m sure Liz will love it. I was just on my way downstairs…you can go on back.” She nods her head toward Liz’s room. Before he gets very far, she adds, “You look good. I’m glad to see you’re feeling better.”

He turns to look at her and wonders if she knows why. “Thank you. I feel much better.” He holds her gaze for a few moments before she turns and leaves. As he watches the door shut behind her, he thinks about how much better it’ll be after Liz talks to her today.

He walks to the kitchen, confident that there’s no one else here since he saw Mr. Parker in the café when he pulled into a parking space outside. He decided to come around to the outside door and avoid attracting his attention.

Grabbing a serving tray from the table, he unloads the bag and places the pastries on it along with the two bottles of orange juice he bought. He looks through the cabinets until he finds a glass and opens the fridge, hoping to find some milk. Once he’s satisfied with the offerings, he takes off his jacket, picks up the tray and heads to Liz’s room.

When he walks in, he stops just inside the doorway and looks toward the bed with a smile. Lying diagonally across the bed on her stomach with the covers tangled around her is Liz. Her head is toward the foot of the bed and the phone is lying off the hook near her right hand on the floor.

He sets the tray on her dresser and walks over, hanging the phone up and setting it back on her desk. She looks so peaceful that he doesn’t want to wake her up, but he can’t help it. He sits down next to her and pushes her hair from her face, causing her to twitch and swat at her face.

Kicking off his shoes, he slides down on the bed next to her and leans over to whisper in her ear. “Liiiiz.”

“Hmmm.” She moans, still not awake.

“Wake up.” He places a small kiss on her neck and he sees her eyes blink open slightly.

“Have you come to service me?” She mumbles into the mattress.

He smiles, knowing she fully awake now and says, “As dead sexy as you are like this, I actually just brought you breakfast.”

She blindly swings her arm up in his general direction to swat at him, but misses. Groaning, she turns over and looks up into his laughing face. “Laugh it up. I’ll have you know that I work pretty hard to look this good.”

He raises an eyebrow and makes a show of looking her up and down slowly. From her mismatched socks, to the sweatpants that look like they’re as old as he is, to the t-shirt with blue paint all over it, to her face with bed creases on her cheek, and finally to her hair that’s sticking out in all directions. “Hmmm, yes. Like I said…dead sexy.” He growls at her and pounces, pinning her underneath him as he attacks her ribs.

“Max! Stop it!” She’s laughing and flailing her legs around, trying to get loose.

“Those aren’t the right words, Liz.” He teases her as he continues his tickling.

“I have to pee!” She squeals and he freezes on top of her.

“Ok, those are the right words.” He laughs and rolls off to her side.

Laughing and swatting him in the arm, she scrambles up off the bed and makes her way to the bathroom. When she comes back out, she sees that he’s made the bed and set a tray of food on top. “Mmm…breakfast.” She licks her lips and rushes over to sit with him.

“So what are your plans today?” She glances over the selection in front of her and grabs a croissant.

“I’m going to the desert with Zan and Cal before Cal goes back to L.A. tonight.” Max pushes the glass of milk closer to Liz. “This is for you.”

She smiles indulgently at him before drinking down half the glass. “I think I’m gonna order all the pregnancy and delivery books I can find today.”

“Get whatever you can on delivery…no matter how technical. Michael, Isabel and I can scan them.”

“We haven’t really had a chance to talk. You know…since the other night. I thought we were still in disagreement about my going.” Liz glances up at him through her lashes as she drinks the rest of her milk.

“We are.” He says simply, not looking at her. “Can we not talk about this now?”

“Ok. But we need to talk about it soon, Max.” She doesn’t know if he’s in denial, or just trying to delay the inevitable. But he can’t really think that she’s not going…can he?

He looks up at her with an unreadable expression on his face for a moment, and she watches as he completely transforms before her eyes. “So…I was thinking.” His eyes light up with the change of subject.

She adopts a look of total horror and says, “Thinking? That’s not good.”

Max rolls his eyes and says, “Funny.”

Liz smiles and asks, “Ok, tell me. What were you thinking?” She loves teasing him because it’s so easy.

“I was wondering if you wanted me here when you talk to your mom.” He nods toward her mid-section and asks, “You gonna tell her?”

“I think I should talk to her alone, and I haven’t decided on when or if I’m gonna tell my parents about the baby.” She’s been debating about that ever since she got here…that maybe it would be better if they didn’t know she was pregnant. Finding out she’s going to another planet will be bad enough…adding her pregnancy on top of that will only make them worry even more. And then there’s her dad. She wants to tell him the truth and she’s hoping her mom will agree.

Max frowns and she can see that he’s thinking the same thing she is about telling her parents about the baby. He nods once and starts gathering everything on the tray as he stands up. “I should get out there. Call me if you decide you want me to be here.”

She stands up as well. “Thanks for bringing breakfast.” She watches as he puts his shoes on and notices, not for the first time, how tired he looks. “You didn’t have to…I know how busy you’ve been.”

He stands up again and pulls her hand to his lips. “Never too busy to make sure you have a decent breakfast.”

Snatching her hand back she says, “It’s not like I eat like that all the time. I was desperate, and the pizza was just there. Sue me.”

The smile on his face irritates her more…especially since she knows he’s right and that she paid for her poor choice of breakfast yesterday with a bad case of indigestion. But she’s not about to give him the satisfaction of knowing that.

Still smiling, Max picks up the tray and bag and swipes a kiss on Liz’s forehead before he walks to her door and calls out over his shoulder, “Good luck with your mom.” He stops just outside in the hallway and looks back to see that she’s watching him…that look of annoyance still on her face…and he winks at her. “I love you.” He waits the split second it takes to see the ghost of a smile cross her lips before he turns and leaves.

Sternbetrachter, I love you? Nope, not yet.

Itzstacie, Hmmm, I think Liz might be keeping the pregnancy thing to herself for now.

Arianneleigh, Oh, I totally agree! Pizza is a well-rounded, healthy breakfast. You have your grain, vegetables, dairy, meat. Perfect!

woodwinds, Danger lurking around the corner? I think you might be right! ;)

Kath, dessert?:lol: Now I'm picturing the 3 of them out in the desert sitting at a little cafe table with plates of cheesecake and coffee.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes everyone! I'm old and boring so I had an exciting night out to dinner and the movies. Woo Hoo! It was crazy, lemme tell ya. Anyway, thanks for all the feedback! See you on Thursday with the next part.

Part 56

“So uh…did you know?” Cal and Zan are sitting in the air conditioning of Cal’s car while they wait for Max to join them. They’ve been talking about Liz and the latest developments and conversation has turned to why they kept the fact that Liz was alive from Zan.

“No.” Zan knows that no one trusts him. They have good reason not to. And he’s not sure what to think of the fact that someone was taking over his body and making him do things he didn’t want to. “I mean…I knew somethin’ weird was goin’ on, I just didn’t know what it was. It was like I blacked out or somethin’. It’s hard to explain.”

“I was kinda hoping for something more here, Zan.” Cal is turning the air conditioner up…liking the feel of the air blowing on his face from the vents.

“Don’t know what to tell ya. When I was…myself again, I knew that somethin’ had happened and I knew that I was doin’ things. I was just fuzzy about the details.” Zan remembers the moment in the ally when he realized what he’d done to Liz…the fear. “You have an idea ‘bout who it was?”

“I have my ideas. But it comes down to Max’s enemies and anyone who would wanna hurt him. It’s not a long list, but considering what it would take to possess you like that, it’s gotta be one of three people.” Cal glances over and sees Zan looking at him expectantly.

“Khivar?” Zan guesses. “That’s a lot of power to do that from so far away.”

“That’s what I’m thinking. Could be Lonnie or Tess, too.”

“Lonnie’d love to see me dead. I can see that.” Zan looks out the side window at the desert landscape. “You think we should maybe check into what the two of them are up to?”

Cal sighs and says, “Probably. I was counting on the government to take care of them, but lately I’m thinking I should look into it.”

After a few moments of silence, Zan says, “I think Liz is scared of me.”

“Liz has good reason to be scared of you,” Cal says.

“But it wasn’t me. Don’t they know that?” Zan hates the way everyone is always watching him, waiting for him to snap.

“Yah, they know. Just give it time.”

“Time. We ain’t got a lot of time.” Zan sees a cloud of dust heading their way and he opens the door. “He’s here.”

Cal watches Zan get out of the car and thinks he knows what Zan was trying to get at. If they’re all gonna be fighting together, there can’t be any suspicion or distrust. Liz and Max are going to have to get over their wariness of Zan, and quick.

Sighing dramatically, Maria steps out of the bathroom and says, “Negative. Just like I told you it would be.” She waves the stick in front of Michael so he can see for himself.

He grabs it from her and frowns. “Are you doing it right?”

Maria rolls her eyes and walks into the kitchen. “I’ve taken ten of the damn things. I’m not pregnant, Michael.”

He sifts through a pile of leaflets and package instructions until he finds what he’s looking for. “But this one says that sometimes it won’t show positive until…”

Maria grabs the paper out of his hand and throws it on the floor before she takes his face between her hands. “Michael, listen to me. It’s negative, they’re all negative. Stop obsessing.” She kisses him soundly before she walks away again. He’s been at this for days now. He’ll come home with a bag of all different kinds and brands of pregnancy tests and insist she take them. “Why don’t you just ask Max about it? He’s the one who started all this.”

Michael frowns and says, “You know why.”

She pours some hot water into her mug and sinks a tea bag into it before carrying it back into the living room. When she sees the pout on Michael’s face, she smiles and sits next to him on the coffee table. “I think you’re working yourself up over nothing. It was a comment that was made off-handedly while you two were arguing. And you’ve blown it up into this huge thing when he could have just meant that I had a hangnail or something. Just ask him. It doesn’t mean you’re weaker than him, or that he’s smarter than you, or that you’re any less of a man than he is. It means that he says stupid things that he has to clarify so others can understand what the hell he’s talking about.”

When he smiles, she leans up and kisses his cheek. “I’ll bet you $100 that he was projecting his own problems with Liz onto you.”

“I don’t have $100.” He rolls his eyes and glances down at the test in his hands, just to be sure it hasn’t changed.

“I’ll give it to you.” She smiles and punches him lightly when she sees him roll his eyes at her again. “If you don’t ask him, I will. Because I’ll tell you one thing, buddy. I’m not spending the last two weeks I have with you peeing on a stick every few hours.”

“All right. I’ll ask him about it tonight.” He finally admits to himself that maybe what he was thinking isn’t right, that Maria really isn’t pregnant. And he’s shocked by the deep twinge of sadness he feels at that. He doesn’t want to leave Maria here, alone and pregnant. What the hell was he thinking? He didn’t even realize that maybe he’s just been grasping onto this hope when he told Maria it was the last thing he’d want.

“Hey. You ok?” Maria notices him staring at the carpet and she tips his head up to look at her.

He shrugs and says, “I guess I just realized that it wouldn’t have been such a bad thing. You know, if you were.”

She’s known all along that’s why he kept making her take those tests. He wasn’t scared that she was pregnant…he was hoping that she was. “It wouldn’t.” She agrees. “But I know you wouldn’t want to miss out on any of it. And as much as I hate it, you’re leaving. And we don’t know how long it’ll be until you’re back.” She refuses to think that he won’t and won’t ever let him think it either.

“Yah. You’re right.” He admits with a small smile.

“Aren’t I always?” She grins and dodges out of the way as he tries to grab her.

~~~~~~~~~~
Later that afternoon, Liz and Maria are sitting in the backyard of Maria’s house drinking iced tea and talking when Liz’s cell phone rings.
She answers it and hears Cal on the other end. “You ready to test this theory of yours? I have to get back to L.A. tonight.”
She looks at her watch and sees that it’s just after four. “Sure. Are you guys still out in the desert?”
“Yah. Meet us out by the pod chamber.”
“I’ll be there in about 20 minutes.” She ends the call and stands up. “Sorry to run out on you, Maria. You wanna go out with me?”
Maria thinks about it for a moment and says, “Sure. Are you testing out your theory with Cal? Because I have to see this.”
“Yup.” Liz walks back inside, Maria following. “The sooner we figure this out, the better. I just hope…” She sets her glass down and stares at it absently.
“That Max will still let you go even if you find out you can’t overrule him?” Maria adds, knowing how conflicted Liz is about it.
Liz looks up at Maria and sighs. “Yah.”
Maria puts her arm around Liz and guides her toward the door. “Well, we better get out there and find out once and for all. And if it’s not true, then we just have to formulate a new plan of attack on Max.” She winks at Liz, making her laugh and shake her head.
It only takes them 15 minutes to get out to the desert and as Liz gets out of the car, Cal looks at his watch in surprise and says, “Are we a little anxious?”
Liz smiles and notices Zan standing slightly behind Max, looking at her warily. Almost as if he’s afraid of her. She hasn’t really been around him that much since they talked on her balcony. And when she has, everyone else was around and he kept his distance.
“So how should we do this?” Cal asks, turning everyone’s attention toward him.
“I was thinking we could start by finding out if you have to do what I tell you without Max saying anything. Then, if it seems that you do, we should go through a series of conflicting orders from both of us, starting small and getting more ethically challenging, if you will.” Liz has thought about this a lot and decided they couldn’t just both tell Cal to do something and see who he has to listen to. It might be more complicated than that.
“I suppose you have a list.” Max walks toward her, his eyebrows raised and the corner of his mouth quirked up in amusement.
“Of course.” Liz smiles and reaches into her pocket where she stuck the paper with her ideas on it. The two of them read it over and she looks up at Cal. “We’ll start with just me first, ok?”
Cal shrugs and says, “Let’s try to keep this from turning into the make-Cal-do-stupid-things-so-we-can-laugh-at-him show, alright?”
Liz smiles at him and says, “I’ll try.” She looks over toward Michael, Maria and Zan and says, “I’ll need your help, too. For this to work, I need to tell Cal to do things he doesn’t really want to do.”
They all agree and she looks up at Max to see if he’s ready. “Just remember you have to tell him, not ask him,” He reminds her and looks down at her list with a smile. Of course she has a list. Some of the things she has written down make him smile, but as he gets closer to the bottom his smile fades.
Taking a deep breath, Liz looks at Cal and says, “Cal, jog in place.”
Cal narrows his eyes at her, but does as she says. Liz smiles up at Max and says, “It worked!”
“Hey, it’s like Simon Says!” Maria exclaims. “Make him rub his belly and pat his head.”
Cal rolls his eyes and grunts, “It’s a little warm out for exercise, sweetheart.”
“Ok, stop.” Liz tells him and he does…gratefully. She looks over at Michael apologetically and his eyes widen, worried about what she’s gonna do next. “Cal, give Michael a hug.”
Maria snorts and Michael grimaces. But Cal walks over and does as he’s told, much to Liz’s satisfaction. “Alright, that’s enough. Cal, come stand over here.” She points to a spot about ten feet away from her and watches as he lets go of Michael, much to Michael’s relief, and does what she says.
Liz looks down at the list again and glances up at Max. He nods his head at her and steps away a couple of feet as she says, “Without hurting him, knock Max to the ground.”
They all watch as Cal raises his hand and Max stumbles back and down to the ground as if someone has tackled him. Liz looks down at Max to see if he’s ready for the next one and he nods. She looks back up at Cal and sees the understanding on his face of what she’s going to tell him to do next. “Blast him.”
Liz hears Maria gasp as she watches Cal raise his hand again. Just as she sees the energy released, she throws her hand out and covers Max with her shield, absorbing the blast. When Cal lowers his arm, Liz retracts her shield and Max stands up, brushing the sand off his jeans. He looks at Liz and says, “I guess that answers that question.”
She nods and looks toward Cal. “The things I asked you to do to Max…did you feel compelled to do it because I told you to, or because you just wanted to?”
Cal grins and says, “As much fun as it is to knock Max around a little, I did it because you told me to. The programming kicked in.”
“So, when you say your programming kicks in, what does that mean exactly?” Liz asks him.
“It means that I don’t think, I do. I don’t think about if I want to do it or not until after I’m already doing it. Like the jogging. I had to jog as soon as you told me to. I didn’t like it, and after I’d started, I let you know I didn’t like it. But I still did.” Cal explains the best he can.
“Knock me to the ground.” She orders him as she braces herself for the impact. But nothing happens.
Max looks between Cal and Liz, clearly ready to jump in and shield her from anything Cal might throw her way. “It didn’t work.”
Cal looks at Liz a moment with his head cocked to the side. “Nope.”
Not giving up on this yet, Liz tells him to step closer to her and he does. “Kick me in the leg.” She waits, sees him narrow his eyes at her and shake his head. She holds her arm out to him and says, “Pinch my arm as hard as you can.” She waits again and nothing happens. He doesn’t move.
Sighing, she lowers her arm and says, “Ok, so you can’t hurt me. But you can hurt Max.” She bites on her lower lip and looks between Max and Cal, thinking about what that means.
“Must be the kid.” Cal says. “It’s the only reason I would feel this overwhelming need to protect you.”
Liz nods and says, “Ok, let’s move on.” She pulls out her list again and both she and Max look over the last few things.
Taking a deep breath, Liz looks up at Max. This is it. They know now that Cal has to do what she says, but will he still do it if Max tells him not to? If he doesn’t, will she still be able to talk Max into letting her go with them?
“Liz.” Max squeezes her shoulder in encouragement and she turns back toward Cal.
“Cal, jog in place.” As soon as she says it, he starts jogging in place again.
“Stop jogging.” Max orders him and he stops.
“Cal, jog in place until I tell you to stop.” Liz says and holds her breath, waiting.
Max watches him jog for a few seconds before saying, “Stop jogging and don’t do it again until I tell you to.”
Cal immediately stops jogging and Liz’s shoulders sag. She looks at Cal and sees the regret on his face. He knows how important this was to her and he knows that now he doesn’t have any power to get her on the Granolith if Max forbids it. “Cal, jog in place.” Her voice sounds defeated, and she’s not surprised when he doesn’t do what she tells him.
No one says anything and Liz sees the look of sympathy from Maria…the worry from Michael. And she can practically feel the relief radiating from Max. She doesn’t have to have a connection to him to know that he’s practically bouncing with joy at this revelation.
Max gets her attention by squeezing her hand and saying, “Let’s finish what you have here.”
She nods and steps away from him slightly, preparing.
Max looks toward Cal and says, “Blast her.”
Cal is startled and looks between Max and Liz, clearly conflicted. He raises his arm, but struggles with it before finally lowering it. “No.”
“I order you to blast her.” Max says again, this time more forcefully as he holds eye contact with Cal.
Swallowing, Cal raises his hand toward Liz again and closes his eyes. As the energy is released, Liz raises her shield just as Max does. The three of them stand there for a few moments, two shields in front of Liz and Cal with his hand raised.
When the dust settles, Max and Liz lower their shields and Cal steps away from them, his arm returning to his side.
“Well, I guess that answers our questions.” Liz says, folding the paper back into her pocket.
“Sorry kitten.” Cal says with a shrug.
Liz nods…telling him it’s ok. “Thanks for letting us experiment with you.”
“No problem.” He looks at his watch and says, “But I have to jet. I’ll be back in a few days. Try not to get into any trouble while I’m gone.” He throws a meaningful glance in Max’s direction before heading to his car.
As they watch Cal drive away, Maria asks, “So now what?”
Liz pushes aside her disappointment and says, “Now, I have to go back home. I told my mom I’d be back for dinner.”
“Hey.” Max turns her around to look at him…tipping her face up. “I know you’re disappointed.”
Shifting her feet, Liz looks away and says, “Yah, well, I know you’re not.”
“I’m not trying to gloat, Liz. And I am sorry that you’re so disappointed. But I’m not sorry it turned out this way. I don’t want that for you, and I can’t help but feel relieved that you won’t have to deal with that kind of responsibility.” He lightly brushes her hair away from her face and tucks it behind her ear.
“I have to go…talk to my mom.” Her voice is tinged in sadness as she pulls away from him. “I’ll call you when I’m done.”
He nods and watches her leave with Maria, hating that she feels the way she does but knowing that it’s for the best. She thinks that this was her only chance to go with them. But it was more than that. She was being short-sighted and only thinking about getting there. She wasn’t thinking about what would happen once they were there. She wasn’t thinking about what kind of responsibility it would be to have control over everyone’s lives. It’s a responsibility that he doesn’t even want, but he’s accepted it and he’s committed to do whatever he possibly can to live up to that responsibility.
~~~~~~~~~~

Liz is still feeling the sting of disappointment as she sits at the dinner table with her parents. She had asked her mom if she could talk to her earlier in the day and they agreed to do it after dinner. Surprisingly, her mom understood when Liz told her she just wanted it to be the two of them.

They get through dinner pretty quickly, with only a few comments from her dad about Max. “How was your date?” “When are you going out with him again?” “Maybe we should invite him over for dinner later this week.”

Getting through dinner with a tolerating smile for her dad seemed like an amazing feat, but as she was clearing the dishes away and he excused himself to go back down to the café, her trepidation returned. She and her mom worked silently until the dishes were clean and put away.

“So, you wanted to talk about something?” Nancy says as she puts the last glasses away in the cupboard.

“Yah, um, can we go back to my room?” Liz feels her adrenaline increase as she gets closer to her room, knowing that in a few minutes there won’t be anymore secrets between her and her mom.

She sits on her bed before standing right back up. She won’t be able to sit still through this. Better to let her mom sit while she stands. She leans back against the sewing table and looks at her…the woman who’s supposed to know her better than anyone…the woman who gave birth to her. She thinks about her own daughter lying safely inside of her and has a whole new appreciation for what her mom put up with over the years.

Deciding to just jump in with both feet, she says, “So, Max tells me you two had quite the conversation last week.” She sees her mother’s eyes light up with the recognition that Liz is finally going to tell her the truth and she feels even more guilty for not trusting her with it sooner.

Unsure of where Liz is ultimately going with this, Nancy answers carefully. “Yes, we did.”

Sighing in frustration, Liz says, “Can we not do the vague questions and answers? Just tell me, is it true?”

Nancy cocks her head to the side and says, “I’m not trying to be vague, honey, but is what true? That I had a conversation with Max last week or that he’s an alien?”

A half cry, half laugh escapes from Liz and she covers her face. “Oh my God!” She looks back at her mom and asks, “Why didn’t you ever say anything?”

“Why didn’t you?” Nancy volleys back.

Liz doesn’t have a good answer for that one, so she changes direction. “Max told me you never said anything to dad.”

“No. I actually felt a little satisfaction knowing that I figured it out and he didn’t.” She shrugs. “It was like this one thing that I knew and he didn’t and it made me feel closer to you, I guess. You and your dad were always so close, so I sort of held onto this for myself.”

“Oh, Mom.” Liz sits on the bed next to her and says, “I’m so sorry, I wish I would have told you sooner. But I just didn’t think of it as my secret to tell.” She sees her mom studying her, almost as if she’s seeing her in a new light. “You must have so many questions.”

“I do. But I won’t push you for answers. I won’t make that mistake again.” Liz sees tears forming in her mom’s eyes and she grabs her hand, touching her in a way she never remembers doing. “I lost you before and I don’t want to again.”

“I’m so sorry, Mom. I was so scared when you saw me…do what I did. And I didn’t know what to do or what to say.” Liz leans her head on her mom’s shoulder. “I’ve wasted so much time being scared.”

“I love you, Liz. You’re my daughter. I’ll love you no matter what.” Nancy turns and pulls Liz close to her, hugging her tightly.

“I love you too, Mom.” Liz squeezes her eyes shut and enjoys the feel of her mom’s arms around her.

woodwinds, No, they won't be caught completely off guard, but that dread you were feeling earlier? I think it's here.;)

extingman, Yes, Max isn't quite the idiot he was on the show. He's gained some wisdom along with his age.

Tasyfa, They really should have paid more attention to what was happening with those two, shouldn't they have? Out of sight, out of mind I guess.

Gigo, Nancy didn't just figure it out. She's known since Liz went to college and Nancy & Jeff caught her using her powers. She explained this to Max a few parts back during Michael & Maria's bbq.

frenchkiss & Kath, It would be much better if Max decided on his own that Liz should go with him. I'm all for the free will.:)

vegas, Max's alien side? It comes out when it needs to, like when one of his people needs a little nudge in the right direction.;) And nobody has really openly defied him when he wanted something since Ava was refusing to turn over Zan at the hospital.

BelieveInTrueLove, :lol: Her own personal vibrator?! That was the funniest thing I read all day! :lol: And great idea!

Well, here you go. The good times have come to an end. I hope you got your fill.;) A big shout out to Kath for turning my lazy grammar ways around. YOU ROCK!

Part 57

Living in Kyle and Serena’s basement for the last few months has become close to intolerable for Ava and Zan. Sometimes it’s good and Ava feels closer to him than ever before. But most of the time, it creates conflict and they end up in the worst fights.

Which is what happened earlier tonight. She wanted to watch a movie on TV and he wanted to watch a fight. Their argument mushroomed into a knock down, drag out fight and she ended up storming out of the house to get away from him. She went to a movie by herself that she’d already seen. The Roswell Theater only had two movies showing at a time and she usually ended up seeing them all more than once.

Now, as she walks through the dark streets back to the house, she sees the occasional couple walking hand in hand and she wishes that they were back in New York. This town is so small. Even when she’s out during the day, she gets looks from people. They know she’s a stranger, and they wonder what she’s doing here.

“Fuckin’ small town,” she mumbles to herself as she stuffs her hands in her pockets. When she turns off the main street into the ally behind the Crashdown, she stops. She feels a presence, a familiar tug at the back of her mind. Looking around her at the shadows and dark doorways, she clears her mind and tries to concentrate on what she’s feeling. At first she thinks it’s Liz and the baby. But something’s not right. There’s something here that doesn’t belong.

Suddenly a cat jumps out from her side, loudly rattling the lid of a metal garbage can, and goes running across the street and she exhales loudly, laughing at herself. “Fuckin’ cat.” She shakes her head and continues walking. The street is empty, most of the lights in the buildings are dark. Looking both ways, she steps off the curb to cross the street. She thinks she hears someone calling her name and she stops to turn toward Main Street and sees Michael in the distance.

She starts to wave at him as he runs toward her, but she only makes it a few feet before something very large, and very invisible, crashes into her and sends her flying. Her last thought before she hits the pavement is that everyone’s in danger, she needs to warn them.

~~~~~~~~~~
2 Hours Earlier…
After talking to her mom for a while, they both decide that they can talk more in the morning. They’ve talked for a long time, about things they’ve never been able to. Nancy had questions about Liz’s powers and Liz gave her a small demonstration by changing the color of her mom’s shirt. It’s as if they’ve just discovered each other after years of separation and Liz finally feels a closeness to her mom that she never felt. But it’s getting late and Nancy needs to help Jeff close up the café and Liz wants to call Max. Before she does, Liz volunteers to take the trash out and help clean while her parents do the day’s receipts.
As she drags the last of the garbage out back, Liz sets down a carry-out container of scraps for the cat that lives out here. She met it the day before yesterday and now whenever she comes outside, the small black cat comes running up to her, rubbing against her legs and purring.
“Hey there, you.” She bends down and pets the cat as it sniffs around the food Liz laid on the ground. There’s no collar, but it looks well taken care of. Liz guesses that it’s just an outdoor cat that found a payload of food in her.
She straightens up and fastens the lid tightly onto the garbage can and she’s assaulted by flashing images, sounds, and smells. When she pulls her hand away, she gasps and spins around in the alley frantically. “Oh my God.”
She grabs for her cell phone only to discover that she left it up in her room, so she rushes inside and calls Max from the phone in the back room. When he picks up, she says, “Max! You have to come over here, now! Where’s Ava? You have to call her.”
“Liz…what’s wrong?” Max is alarmed, but Liz doesn’t have time to explain.
“Just get over here. And call Ava!” She slams down the phone and rushes back out into the alley. Everything looks the same. It’s dark…silent. The cat is behind the trashcan eating its food. “Shit!” She tries to stay still and listen, sense anything. But it all seems normal to her.
She walks up to the opening of the alley onto Main Street and she waits for Max and the others. When she sees Max peel around the corner and toward the Crashdown, she waves at him to park in front and she meets him there.
He flies out of the car, almost before it’s come to a complete stop and grabs her. “What’s wrong?” He’s running his hands down her arms, over her head. “What happened?”
“It’s not me.” She grabs his hands and stops his scanning. “I got a flash, of the future. At least, I hope it’s the future.” She glances back toward the alley. “Where’s Ava? Did you call her?”
“She’s not at Serena’s. Zan said they got in a fight and she left hours ago. He doesn’t know where she’s at.” He looks toward the alley to see what Liz is so interested in. “Why? Do you think something’s gonna happen to her?”
She rubs at her forehead in a vain attempt at organizing the visions she saw. “I saw her…I saw her get hit by a car. But she didn’t see it because it wasn’t there.”
Max shakes his head and says, “I don’t understand.”
“I think…I think it wasn’t there because someone was mindwarping her.” She turns back toward Max and says, “Do you think that Tess could be here somewhere?”
The color drains from Max’s face and he shakes his head. “She’s with the FBI.”
“Maybe she’s not with them anymore.” Liz sees more headlights coming toward them and she sees Zan park in the spot next to Max.
“What’s goin’ on? Why you lookin’ for Ava?” Zan gets out of the car and walks over.
Liz can see he’s concerned about Ava, and she also notices that he’s not wearing a shirt or shoes, just a loose pair of jeans. She can’t help but compare him to Max. Everything about him is so familiar. Except those tattoos, and the nipple ring.
“Liz saw something happen to Ava.” Max’s voice snaps her out of her perusal and she looks up at him guiltily, noticing the way he’s frowning at her. Oops.
“What happened? Where is she?” Zan immediately questions, looking around.
“It hasn’t happened yet, at least I don’t think it has.” Liz tells him and he looks at her in comprehension.
“Is this one of those future thingies?” He asks her, relaxing slightly.
“We’ll split up and look for her. You call Michael and Isabel and tell them to come here. Better call Kyle too, see if he can get a lead on where she might be.” Max is already walking away, motioning for Zan to follow him, and Liz runs back inside for her cell phone.
Fifteen minutes later, Liz is standing outside again with Michael and Isabel after explaining to them what’s going on. “I think we should look for her, too. But not too far from here since we know she’ll end up in this alley at some point.”
“Max told us to stay here and look for anyone strange,” Michael says as he scans the street.
“Fine. You stay here and Isabel and I will go look.” Liz looks toward Isabel for agreement. She feels totally useless just standing here. There doesn’t need to be three of them hanging around here doing nothing.
Michael watches as the two of them take off running down the street and he makes his way toward the alley to look for anything strange looking. Not finding anything out of the ordinary, he leans back against the wall in front of the Crashdown and sighs. Who knows if this vision Liz had happens tonight or three days from now.
Groaning when he sees the sheriff’s truck pull up across the street, he pushes away from the wall to walk over. “Great. Just what we need.”
He meets the sheriff just as he’s getting out of the truck. “Michael. I heard Kyle’s call on the radio to keep an eye out for your friend, Ava. Is there some kind of problem?”
Michael shrugs and tries to look nonchalant. “She had a fight with her boyfriend and took off a few hours ago. I think they’re just worried about her.”
“I see. Well, I think it’s a little premature…hey, isn’t that her?” Michael turns to follow Jim’s line of sight and sees Ava standing in the alley. He calls her name but she doesn’t seem to hear him. He starts to run toward her, calling her name and she finally turns and sees him when she suddenly flies through the air and lands in the middle of the street with a sickening crunch.
“What the hell was that?” Jim calls out behind him as he, too, runs with Michael toward Ava.
They both reach her at the same time and Michael kneels on the ground, feeling for a pulse. He can hear Jim calling on his radio for an EMT and back-up and he silently curses. Now what?
Jim kneels down next to her and says, “We can’t move her. The paramedics should be here soon.” He feels for a pulse as well, and finding one, he says, “She’s alive.”
Michael stands up and fishes his cell phone from his pocket and calls Max. Not like it’ll do any good since the sheriff saw the whole thing. How the hell are they gonna explain this? As he dials Max’s number, he walks a few steps away and surveys the area around them. There’s still nothing. He doesn’t see anything, doesn’t sense anything strange.
When Max answers, he says, “You better get to the Crashdown. And uh…” He lowers his voice as much as possible and adds, “We have company.”
He snaps his phone shut and turns to see Jim jogging back from his truck with flares. He sets them off in a line across the street to keep traffic away and they can both hear the sirens in the distance. Michael chances a look at Jim, expecting the questions to start flying. But he doesn’t say anything, just kneels back down next to Ava and tells her she’ll be alright, that the ambulance is on the way.
It doesn’t take long for Max and Zan to come running and as they get closer, Michael sees realization dawn on their faces. As Zan races over to Ava, Max stops next to Michael and asks, “What the hell happened?” Michael sees the look of horror on Max’s face at the fact that the Sheriff is here and he shrugs.
“I was talking to the sheriff, Maxwell. And the next thing I knew, she was…she was just lying here.” He sees Jim’s face turn up toward him when he hears this and he looks at him quizzically. Damn. He was hoping that Jim didn’t see the flying through the air part.
“Get away from her!” Zan shoos the sheriff away as he skids down to Ava’s side. “Ava…talk to me. Come on…Ava?” Michael sees Zan start to scan her body for injuries and he clears his throat.
“Uh, Zan, the ambulance is on its way.” He sees Zan come to his senses and glance up at the sheriff before turning to Max, pleading with him to do something.
Max looks down at Ava’s broken, bloody body and feels completely helpless. There’s nothing he can do with Jim Valenti standing there. He glances up at the Sheriff and expects to see that familiar suspicion in his eyes. But what he sees is something all together different. Sympathy, understanding…indecision.
Max watches the sheriff’s eyes dart from Ava, to him, and the direction the sound of the sirens are coming from and back again. He looks almost like he’s trying to decide something. Within moments, though, his attention is diverted to Liz and Isabel running toward them from the opposite direction he came from.
“Oh my God! We’re too late.” Liz cries as she gets closer and falls next to Ava.
“One of you do something, quick before they…” Isabel starts to say, obviously not seeing the sheriff standing a couple of feet away.
“Isabel!” Max says through clenched teeth. She stops talking and glances around, her eyes widening when she sees the sheriff standing there.
She snaps her mouth shut, horrified at what she just said. Everyone’s staring at her so she tries to smooth over her mistake. “I mean, shouldn’t we get her out of the middle of the street or something?”
Max lets out a giant sigh of frustration and wipes his hand over his face.
“We’re not supposed to move her,” Michael says helpfully as he, too, glances at the sheriff.
The silence and palpable fear in the air is punctured by the sound of Ava coughing, a wet sound followed by blood trickling out of the corner of her mouth.
“Jesus, Ava.” Zan wipes the blood away in vain and leans his forehead down on her chest.
“Tess…mindwarp…” Ava struggles to tell them but Zan reaches his fingers to her mouth.
“Shhh. We know, baby.”
Max hears the sirens get closer and feels his agitation wind tighter. He’s already forming a plan for the hospital. They’ll need to make sure they don’t take her blood. He’ll need a chance to be alone with her before they examine her too closely.
“I’ll uh, just give you folks a little privacy. I’m gonna walk on down here and direct some traffic.” The sheriff’s voice gets everyone’s attention as he motions toward the intersection a block over. He looks at Max then, and nods his head once before saying, “Sounds like that ambulance is about two to three minutes away. I’ll be keeping those folks away…” He nods toward the small crowd of people gathering on the sidewalk. “You know, until they get here.”
Max holds his gaze and for that one moment, he could swear the sheriff is telling him this is his only chance to heal Ava. Of course, it’s probably his imagination, but he’s not about to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Everyone watches, stunned and slightly confused, as the sheriff quickly walks away and starts shouting at the crowd of people to move back.
Liz is the first one to jump into action. “I’m healing her now. This is our only chance.” Before anyone can say anything, she’s already got her hands on Ava.
“Stand over there so no one can see,” Isabel orders, directing everyone to stand in a semi-circle around Ava and Liz, blocking the crowd’s view.
It takes two minutes and twenty seconds for the ambulance to arrive. Max knows this because he counted the seconds off in his head. When he hears it pull to a stop, he helps Liz stand up and they all step back to let the paramedics in.
There wasn’t enough time to heal everything, but Ava looks considerably better than she did two minutes ago. She’s able to sit up by herself and she lets the paramedics lead her over to the ambulance to sit on the back. As they check her over, Max looks up to see Nancy and Jeff Parker standing in front of the Crashdown and he wonders how Liz’s talk with her mom went.
He scans the crowd that’s formed and his eyes lock with the sheriff’s. If he didn’t know any better, he’d swear the man knew what he wanted to do and walked away so that he could do it. He can even see the question in his eyes, wondering how Ava seems so much better than she did a few minutes ago and knowing that Max didn’t lay a hand on her.
Kyle is standing next to him, having obviously arrived at some point in the last two minutes. He’s talking to Jim, but Jim is looking at Max. Kyle follows his dad’s line of sight and when he sees Max he grabs his dad’s arm and guides him away toward the other officers standing nearby.
“He knows something,” Michael says from next to Max. “He saw the whole thing. She went flying through the air and there wasn’t anything else around.”
“Are you sure?” Isabel asks. “He didn’t seem like he knew. He would have been asking more questions.”
They’re all standing there watching the sheriff as he talks to some other officers. Max has a fleeting thought that they couldn’t look more suspicious. But after the way the sheriff was looking at him and the things he said, Max doesn’t think it really matters.
Michael starts fidgeting nervously when Kyle, Jim Valenti, and another officer start walking toward them. “Great.”
“Just stay calm, Michael.” Max pulls Liz closer to his side, knowing she’s probably feeling a little woozy from the healing.
When the three cops arrive and stop in front of them, the one they don’t know says, “I’m Deputy Hanson. I’m gonna need to get some statements here. Were you all witnesses?”
“No, just me,” Michael speaks up and takes a step forward.
“And you are…” Hanson looks up at him, his pen poised above his notepad.
“Michael Guerin.”
Hanson nods and writes his name down before looking up. “Oh yah…” Hanson smiles in recognition. “You’re living with Maria Deluca. My wife is a huge fan.” Of Michael’s annoyed look, he clears his throat and continues with his questions. “You were talking to Sheriff Valenti at the time of the accident, correct?”
Michael nods. “Right.”
“Ok, so you were standing in front of the jewelry store down here…” Hanson turns to point to the jewelry store that’s two storefronts down from the UFO Museum, completely one block away from where they were really standing, and Michael looks over at the Sheriff. And it dawns on him that the Sheriff lied about where they were. Valenti nods at him slightly before Hanson turns back. “…and I don’t suppose you got a good look at the car, did you?”
“Uh, no. I was facing the other way.” Michael says, proud of the fact that he’s not completely lying, yet.
Hanson nods and makes more notes. “Right. So when did you turn around and realize what had happened?”
“I’m not sure. I guess I heard something, it happened pretty fast.” Now that he knows Valenti lied, he doesn’t know what to say.
“You sure you didn’t see the car, any car, speeding away from the scene?” Hanson asks again, a hopeful note in his voice.
Michael shakes his head. “Sorry. I was kinda just worried about my friend.”
Hanson takes a deep breath and sighs. “Alright.” He tucks the notepad in his belt. “I guess we just have to hope the vic saw something,” He says, more to Valenti than anyone else. Valenti nods in sympathy and walks away with Hanson and they can all hear Valenti talking as they go. “Let’s hope. Caught me completely off guard, it was going so dang fast. Before I even reached the vic it was long gone.”
Max watches Valenti and Hanson getting further away, their conversation fading with the distance. They’re both shaking their heads in disappointment.
“We got problems,” Michael says when they’re out of earshot.
“It looks like Ava’s gonna be ok. And you’re lucky my dad didn’t see anything,” Kyle says as he looks toward the ambulance. They’re putting a small bandage on her forehead and she keeps asking them if she can go yet as Zan hovers nearby.
Michael shakes his head at Kyle and says, “He did see. We were standing right here.” He points to the spot that they’re standing in, directly across the street from the Crashdown.
“But, I thought you guys were down there…” Kyle starts, confused.
“There wasn’t even a car, not one we could see anyway,” Michael adds.
“He lied. He lied about what happened and he walked away to give me a chance to heal Ava.” Max turns to Kyle and says, “He knows.”
Kyle shakes his head and tries to laugh it off. “No…no, he doesn’t. He dropped that shit years ago. He doesn’t know anything.”
“I think he knows, too,” Liz says, keeping her eye on the Sheriff as he walks away. “But we have bigger things to worry about right now.”
Max looks down at Liz, then over at Ava. “She’s right. Tess is here, maybe Lonnie, too.”
frenchkiss, How does Valenti know? Well, Kyle didn't tell him, that's for sure.;)
woodwinds, It was a car, and it was a mindwarp. Liz saw the car in her vision. Yes, Valenti was pretty confused when Ava seemed better and Max hadn't done anything.
BelevnDreamsToo, You'll find out how Tess & Lonnie knew to go to Roswell. There was hint in the part where Alex flew to Roswell.;)
jason's lover, Hmmm...anything else? I could probably think of a few things. You know, if you don't think it's angsty enough.;)
RedRoze, Yes, it was a car. Liz saw it in her vision. And Nancy just always seemed like the type who would keep something like that from Jeff just so she could feel closer to Liz.
Gigo, Well, technically, they're all adults.;)
Tasyfa, It's a little bit of both. He knows more at this point than he did on the show, though. So the leap wasn't that far.
Tinkerbell_Luvs_Roswell, That cat doesn't mean anything. Just something to use as a point of reference.
Breathless, :lol: Yes, Zan can be quite the butt. But I kinda like him that way.;)
cherie, Liz just kind of jumped in before Max had the chance to.
BelieveInTrueLove, Ah, but Zan and Ava have been teaching Max how to see through a mindwarp. So they're not completely blind. Too bad Michael didn't show up for those lessons.;)
Part 58
“No! Absolutely not!” The Evans’ living room descends into silence at Maria’s outburst. It’s two in the morning and the house is a flurry of activity. That is, until everyone hears Maria shouting from the kitchen and stops what they’re doing.
“You’re kidding me, right? I mean, this is some sort of practical joke you guys decided to play on me. Because I know that you’re not standing there telling me that you’re leaving this planet tomorrow!” Liz bites her lower lip and looks away from the kitchen at the faces around her. Max, who is sitting by the fireplace talking to his parents. Isabel, who she can see through the open front door, standing on the porch wrapped up in Alex’s arms. Ava, now completely healed from her ordeal earlier in the night, sitting on the sofa with Zan and Serena. And Kyle, standing next to her with a panicked look on his face.
“This is crazy, Liz. Maria’s right,” Kyle says, looking toward Serena and exchanging a worried look.
Liz swallows, overwhelmed with the arguments and decisions that have been flying around since they got here three hours ago. Michael and Zan wanted to go try to find Tess as soon as they left the spot where Ava was mowed down in the street. Kyle called Serena at the hospital and filled her in on what happened and she met them back here. After talking to Serena, Max decided that they should start up the Granolith tonight, drawing Tess and Lonnie to it and forcing them back to Antar with them when it leaves in 24 hours.
Of course, there’s some major disagreements concerning that line of thinking. Liz voicing hers the loudest, and now Maria. It’s too soon. Max called Cal, who was still on his plane back to L.A. and told him to come back. So now they’re waiting for him to get here.
“I know,” Liz says to Kyle. “But ultimately it’s Max’s decision.”
Liz turns toward Maria when she stalks back into the living room, Michael close behind. She has tears streaming down her face and her arms are crossed over her chest as she keeps shrugging off Michael’s attempts to comfort her.
“Shouldn’t we like, vote on this or something?” Maria asks. “I mean, Max can’t just decide something like this on his own, right?”
Maria looks toward Liz, pleading with her and Liz falls into a nearby chair, exhausted.
Max stands up and says, “We’ve been over it. And this is the only way, Maria. We have to assume that Tess and Lonnie are working with Khivar and we can’t give them the chance to hurt anyone else. They wanna go back to Antar so bad? Then we take them with us and deal with them there. But I’m not risking anyone here, or anyone we care about by waiting around for them to make another move. As far as I’m concerned, this war started for us tonight.” He glances at his parents, not wanting them to know what his real plan is. They’ve already been through so much.
No one says anything, what is there to say? They all knew this day was coming. Just not so soon. “I’m going out there now. Anyone who’s going tomorrow has 24 hours to say their goodbyes.” After a few moments, Maria runs out of the house in tears and brushes past Alex and Isabel, Michael right behind her.
Max steps toward Liz and turns to Serena. “I’m gonna need your help.”
Serena nods and stands up, glancing at Kyle before she heads toward the door.
“Max.” Liz grabs his arm and when he turns to look at her, they share a silent agreement that their talk that Max has been putting off can’t wait any longer. He grabs her hand and walks out behind Serena with Liz in tow.
~~~~~~~~~~

“I can’t do this, Michael. I thought I could. I thought I was prepared, but I’m not.” Maria sits in the passenger seat while Michael drives them back to their house.

“We both knew this day would come. You’ve always known I’m leaving.” The words leave his mouth, an attempt to rationalize what’s happening. But even he’s not comforted by them. Even he thinks they sound ridiculous.

“I know that, you asshole.” Maria rolls her eyes and wipes at her nose. “What, I’m supposed to be happy about this?”

“Do you think I’m happy about it?” He shoots back.

Maria shrugs her shoulders, pouting. “I don’t know. It doesn’t really seem like you care either way.”

Michael clenches his teeth and struggles to keep both hands on the wheel instead of strangling her with them. He doesn’t say anything, not trusting himself to remain civil. So he takes a deep breath and reminds himself that she’s acting like this because she loves him.

It seems like it takes an eternity before he pulls into their driveway. He stalks into the house, not waiting to see if Maria’s following him or not. She’ll come in when she feels like it. In the meantime, he paces the living room, formulating what he’s gonna say to her in his head. Because if there’s one thing he’s learned since being with Maria, it’s that you have to have your thoughts planned out. You have to remain in control of the conversation. Or she’ll just rip you a new one before you can say ‘boo’.

By the time he hears the car door shut outside and the sound of her shoes hitting the pavement, he thinks he’s ready. He’s got at least ten different responses at the ready for whatever she throws at him. He turns toward the door and braces himself for whatever verbal assault she’ll give him. He’s prepared, he’s the man of iron, there’s no breaking him down.

When she walks through the door, he faces her, waiting for her to turn around. “I want you to get me pregnant.”

“Wha…?” Ok, he didn’t expect that.

She takes a deep breath and crosses the room to him. “You’re right. I’ve known you were leaving and I accepted that when I agreed to marry you. It was just a shock, you know? I just have to deal with it, say goodbye, and let you go. But I want a baby, your baby. I know it’s selfish and completely unfair. And if you come back some day, we can have more babies if you want. But if you don’t come back, I want a part of you to be here, with me.”

He’s stunned to silence. Leave it to her to pick the one thing he doesn’t have a response to. She’s looking up at him, waiting for him to respond.

“Michael, say something.” He watches a lone tear fall from her eye and fall down her cheek, the moonlight from the window reflecting off of it. A baby. He can’t leave her with a baby to have and raise all by herself. He’d be giving her to the life her mother had. He’d be one of those dad’s, like Maria’s, that never saw their kid. That baby will grow up and never know who its father is.

“I…I can’t.” He reaches to wipe the tear away but she moves her head back, out of his reach.

“You won’t.”

He shakes his head and says, “I won’t do that to you. Maria, we talked about this just the other day! You were the one telling me all the reasons it was a good thing you weren’t pregnant. You’re just emotional right now and you don’t realize what this would do to you. I don’t want that for you. You’re so much more than that. You deserve more than raising a kid by yourself because I took off and left you pregnant. You deserve better.”

Maria steps back and raises her head, her eyes wide in sudden realization. “Oh my God.” She smiles sadly as a half laugh, half sob escapes from her throat. “I am so stupid. I get it now. I mean, I totally get it.”

Michael narrows his eyes at her and asks, “Get what?”

She spins away from him and walks toward the window, looking out at the stars for a brief moment before turning back to look at him. “You think I deserve better than you. You’ve always thought that, haven’t you? At first I was so confused. I didn’t understand why you suddenly seemed so sure that you wanted to be with me. Ever since you decided you were leaving with Max, you’ve been so open and confident. But it’s because you knew you were leaving, isn’t it? I bet if you weren’t leaving, if you never thought you were, that I would have never seen you again after the visions at the Granolith. Because you think I deserve better than you.”

“I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.”

“Oh yes you do.” She walks back across the room and stops in front of him. “I’m right, aren’t I? That’s why you were so obsessed with the fact that I might be pregnant. Because it didn’t fit into your plan. You thought you could just have your three months pretending, living the life that you really want. And then when you leave, I would just be on my merry way and find the guy I should be with, the one I deserve. Because the idea that I would want you is just preposterous, right?”

“Right. I mean, no. I mean…what?” Is that what he’s been doing? Is she right? He certainly didn’t have it all planned out like that, all neat and tidy. But he does know that she deserves better than him, a better life than what he could ever give her. When he thought she might be pregnant before, she’s right that he felt a little of his control slip away. If he left her with a baby, she’d never be able to move on after he left. But he was also a little disappointed that she wasn’t. He was being selfish.

“Michael, how many timelines does it take you to realize that I love you and that we belong together?” She plants her hands on her hips, angry with herself for taking this long to figure him out.

He furrows his brow in confusion. “But…we died in those other timelines.”

“And we were in love. Even in that awful second one. In the end, we loved each other. And I wanted you, no one else. Why would that be any different now?”

Michael plops down on the coffee table behind him and scratches at his eyebrow with his finger. “I…I don’t know. I’m sorry; I really didn’t plan it to be like this. I don’t want this for you, Maria. You’ll be alone with no one to take care of you.”

Dropping to the floor in front of him, she frames his face with her hands, watching the moonlight play over his features. “I want this. And I’ll be waiting for you, Michael Guerin. I’ll wait forever because no one else besides you could put up with me.” They both laugh and she continues. “When you come back, I’ll be here with your son or daughter and we’ll make lots of brothers and sisters for him or her. And if…if you don’t come back, I’ll still have part of you with me.”

He grabs both of her hands from his face and brings them to his forehead as he leans forward and closes his eyes. He doesn’t say anything for a while, and Maria rests her cheek on top of his head. Finally, he says, “If he ends up with my hair, you won’t make fun of him, will you?”

She closes her eyes and shakes her head. “No. But if he gets your nose I might.”

He waits a few moments before saying, “Ok. I guess I can live with that.”

~~~~~~~~~~
The ride out to the reservation is quiet. Each of them is caught up in their own thoughts. Everything is dark and still when they get there and the air is chilly. They climb through the brush and reach the cave fairly quickly.
“We’ll have to get it out of the wall,” Serena says as they stand toward the back of the cave looking at the solid rock wall that hides the Granolith from view.
Max walks over and places both hands on the wall and sees Liz move next to him and do the same. He looks at her and asks, “Ready?”
She nods and they both concentrate on dissolving the rock in front of them. It takes longer than he expected, but then, he’s never really tried to dissolve rock, just blow it up. Finally, he thinks they have a big enough hole created to pull the Granolith out.
“It’s lighter than I expected,” Liz comments as Serena joins them to help maneuver the large black cone out into the cave. “Will everyone fit inside of it?”
“It will adjust to accommodate as many people as we need before it transforms into a ship,” Serena says as they settle it on the floor. She picks her bag up from the floor and pulls the crystal out of it. “This will begin the preparation, then you’ll have 24 hours to be on board or it leaves without you.” She hands the crystal to Max.
He looks at the crystal, then the Granolith. He doesn’t see anywhere to put it and he turns questioning eyes to Serena.
“Listen to the Granolith. It’ll tell you what to do,” She explains unhelpfully.
Sighing, he faces the Granolith again and shuts his eyes. At first he doesn’t hear anything but his own breathing, but then he starts to hear a low hum, an electric sound. When he opens his eyes, he can see clearly where the crystal should go and he slowly steps forward. He hesitates for a brief moment before inserting the crystal into the base and watches as the black surface closes in around it.
Suddenly, the whole thing lights up and an orange display lights up on the wall, a sort of circle that looks like some kind of countdown clock. “Is that it?”
“That’s it.” Serena stands back and looks at the display on the wall. “These smaller dots in the middle represent one earth minute. As they count down the hour, one of these longer bars will disappear.” She traces the patterns on the wall with her hand.
Max stares at it, suddenly feeling the weight of his decision bearing down on his chest. This is it, there’s no turning back now. He can feel the Granolith now, can feel the energy flowing through him. And he knows that the others will feel it, too. But most importantly, Tess and Lonnie will. And that will be what leads them here.
He feels Liz step closer to him and grab his hand and he looks down at her and he feels complete and utter fear start to take over. She expects to go. She wants him to tell her that it’s ok if she does. But the fear is squeezing at his heart painfully.
Looking up at Serena, he sees her sitting against the wall on the ground just staring at the Granolith. Is she communicating with it? He’s curious to know how her connection to it works. “Serena, would you mind if we went for a walk for a few minutes?”
She doesn’t look up at him as she says, “Go ahead. I’d actually like a few moments alone here.”
He has questions for her, but they’ll wait until later. The next 24 hours don’t promise to include much sleep. Grabbing Liz’s hand he leads her out of the cave and turns around once they’re outside. He can see a slight glow from outside and says, “We’re gonna have to do something about that.”
They walk about fifty feet away until they’re out of sight and earshot of the cave and Max stops. He’s not sure how this conversation will go because he’s battling with his need for Liz to be with him and his fear that she’ll be hurt or killed.
“Max, I know what you’re thinking.”
He turns to her and says, “Yes, I’m sure you do.” He’s nothing if not transparent.
“If it helps at all, I’m scared too. So is everyone else.” She smiles slightly and sighs. “I don’t wanna argue with you. I’ve said everything that I need to say. I don’t need to repeat myself. But you should know that even though we’re all scared, we all believe in you. Everyone was a little crazy tonight because we thought we had two more weeks. But I have faith in you. If your instinct tells you that this is the right thing to do, then it is.”
Max shakes his head and asks, “What did I ever do to deserve you?”
Smirking, she says, “I don’t know, but it must have been something great.”
A shaky laugh escapes him and he runs his hand through his hair. “God, Liz I…I don’t want you there.”
“Yes, you do,” She says. “I can see it in your eyes. That’s your fear talking.”
“Of course it is!” He exclaims as if she’s missing the point. “It’s not like we’re going on vacation. There’s a very good chance that we’ll all be killed.”
“Then we all get killed. What does it matter, Max? I either get killed there, fighting, doing whatever I can do to help. Or I get killed here when Khivar comes looking for your heir.” She paces angrily in front of him before stopping and facing him. “Or, with my help, we beat Khivar and take back your throne. You know what the logical thing to do is. If you look past your fear for one moment, you’ll see that it’s our best chance.”
He paces a small circle, fiddling with the zipper on his jacket in agitation. He hates this, hates having to make this kind of decision. Hell, knowing her, she’ll throw herself onto the ship at the last minute anyway, regardless of what he says. Everyone else seems to think she should go. But everyone else isn’t thinking about what’s best for their baby. But she does have powers, awesome powers that could definitely help. She can take care of herself better than he can.
Liz watches patiently as he paces. She sits down on a nearby rock and knows that he’s waging an inner battle, one between his head and his heart. And she knows he’ll make the right decision. He just needs to reconcile it with himself.
“Alright.” His voice is so soft she barely hears him. She wasn’t even aware that he’d stopped his pacing and is now looking down at her.
She looks up at his tortured face and she wishes she could make him feel better. But she only nods and says, “Alright.” She doesn’t want to say anything that will risk changing his mind so she opts for silence. Standing up, she takes his hand and leans up to kiss him.
He reaches up to keep her face close to his and she can feel his breath on her lips as he says, “I love you.”
She knows that this is more than a declaration of how he feels about her. In a way it’s so much more than that. It’s the reason he’s letting her go with him. “I know.”
After a few moments, she pulls away and says, “Let’s go. We have a lot to do.”
~~~~~~~~~~

Countdown: 21 hours 30 minutes

“I don’t understand.” Jeff Parker looks from his daughter to his best friend, Phillip. “What is this all about?”

It’s 6:30 in the morning and the only thing Jeff knows is that he got a phone call thirty minutes ago from Phillip Evans asking him and Nancy to come to their house. When they got there, they found a very tired looking, very somber group waiting for them. And Liz has just told him that she’s leaving.

“Dad, there are things…things about me that you don’t know.” Liz glances at her mom and Jeff turns to Nancy.

“Do you know something about this?”

Nancy has a sad look on her face tinged with guilt and he turns back to Liz. “Maybe you should just start at the beginning.”

Liz looks at Max and she debates on where to start. It was so much easier with her mom. Her mom already knew the basics. “Dad, you remember the shooting?” He nods, of course he remembers. Her dad knows that the shooting is what triggered the sheriff’s dogged determination. It’s why she ultimately left Roswell. “I really was shot that day. Right here.” She points to the area right below her ribs and watches him look down in confusion.

“Max healed me. He dissolved the bullet and healed me. He saved my life that day and he was able to do that because he’s…he’s an alien.” Before her dad can start formulating questions, she forges on, wanting to get it over with. “But when he healed me, he changed something in me. I can do things that normal people can’t do. And because of that, because I can help him, I’m leaving early tomorrow morning. We’re leaving the planet and going to where Max is from.”

~~~~~~~~~~
Kyle and Serena sit in their living room and silently stare at Jim Valenti. After what happened last night, they’re both wondering just how much he knows. And why he’s never said anything. Kyle thinks that maybe he just doesn’t know how involved they are and didn’t want to sound crazy. Every few seconds, Kyle’s gaze drifts to the small wooden box his dad brought in with him that’s now sitting on the coffee table between them.
“So, I’m assuming you invited me over here this morning to do more than stare at me.” Jim raises his eyebrow and takes a sip of the coffee Serena made for him.
Kyle squeezes Serena’s hand and gives her a look of encouragement. “Jim, Kyle and I, well, we were wondering why you lied last night to Hanson. We talked to Michael and he told us what really happened.” She leaves it vague enough for him to respond however he wants. If he has another reason for lying like he did, then maybe he’ll tell them.
Jim glances at Kyle before returning his gaze to Serena. “I think you know why.”
“I think I’d like to hear it from you anyway,” Serena says, not taking her eyes from his.
Jim leans forward to set his coffee cup down and he opens the lid of the box, turning it slowly so that it faces them. “I believe this belongs to you.”
Both Serena and Kyle lean forward and peer into the box, both of their mouths dropping open at the same time, their eyes widening at the same time. Because inside the box is a silver object. One that Kyle has never seen before but one that Serena has. On Antar.
~~~~~~~~~~

“Wait, you never said anything about going to another planet,” Nancy exclaims, the color draining from her face. She looks at Max accusingly and narrows her eyes.

“I…wha…what are talking about?” Jeff looks from his daughter, who has clearly gone crazy, to Nancy. “You’ve heard this all before?” He laughs, but there’s no humor in it. It’s a laugh that’s begging for everyone else to start laughing with him and reveal that it’s all a big joke. He turns to Phillip and says, “Max is an alien. Right.”

“Honey, do the thing with the fire poker,” Diane pipes in, trying to be helpful.

Max and Phillip exchange glances and Max holds out both of his hands. He creates a small ball of light and makes it float several inches above his cupped hands. Holding it for a few moments, he extinguishes it and looks up at Jeff Parker.

“This…this is a joke, right?” Jeff looks from Max to Phillip, then back to the place he saw the glowing ball of light.

“No, it’s not,” Phillip says seriously.

Seeing the fear on her dad’s face, Liz says, “Dad, I know this is pretty incredible and it’s a lot to take in.”

Jeff turns his gaze toward his daughter and asks, “And…and you can do that, too?”

Liz nods and says, “We can do a lot more than that. We can both heal, and we can create this protective shield, and I can get glimpses of the future and I can tell if someone isn’t telling the truth.” She leaves out the blasting part, knowing they couldn’t possibly demonstrate that in the house.

Jeff looks at Liz closely, studying her. “Show me.”

She nods and stands up, holding her hand out and she creates a giant shield to surround her. She looks at Max and says, “Throw something at me to show him.”

Max picks up a remote from the coffee table and tosses it at Liz’s shield and they all watch it spark and bounce off her shield onto the floor before she lowers it.

“Holy shit.” Jeff leans back in his chair and stares at Liz with wide eyes.

~~~~~~~~~~
“Where did you get this?” Serena asks in a hushed tone as she studies the orb.
“I stole it. Years ago, a woman came to town…turns out she worked for the FBI. When she started asking questions about Max, I started investigating her. I found this in her car one day and took it.” He looks at Kyle and says, “You remember that new counselor that was at the high school for a couple of months? Her name was Topolsky.”
“I remember her. She wasn’t there very long,” Kyle says, still looking at the orb.
“Over the years, I’ve discovered other people coming to town asking questions about that shooting. I guess my investigation tipped off more than the FBI. When some folks from MetaChem came around asking questions, I got a job as a night-shift security guard there to check it out. I recovered more items from them.”
Kyle looks up finally and asks, “That’s what you were doing there? I thought we just needed more money.”
“I was obsessed. I got a hold of the uniform Liz was shot in and had my own analysis done. There was blood on that dress, and a bullet hole. I made so many mistakes. Went about it all the wrong way. And I’m afraid I didn’t treat Liz too well back then. I was desperate for the truth.” Jim shakes his head, remembering.
“And did you find it? The truth you were looking for?” Serena asks. When Jim nods, she asks, “And was it worth it?”
Jim sighs and says, “Was it worth it? Ultimately…no. I caused a lot of pain for two families in this town. But am I glad for what I know? Yes.”
Part 59
Countdown: 17 hours
“You ready to do this?” Zan is lying on his back in Kyle and Serena’s backyard, looking up at the sky.
“Yah, you?” Ava answers easily, without thought.
Zan answers with a grunt as he brings his hands up under his head. “This is some fucked up shit we got ourselves dumped in. How come you’re always so easy goin’ about it?”
Ava leans up on her elbow and looks down at Zan. “You know, our whole lives we’ve been told we’re just back up, that we don’t mean nothin’ to no one. We grew up in a sewer with two degenerates who tried to kill you. I had to learn to be quiet, keep my mouth shut. I’m not easy goin’. I’m patient.”
“Huh. You never keep your mouth shut with me,” he complains. “You’re always yammerin’ on about somethin’.”
She flicks him on the forehead and says, “You just never listen. So I hafta say things ten times like you’re a kid before I’m sure you heard me.”
Zan smirks at what she says because she’s right and he looks up at the clouds floating by. After a while, he rolls over and looks at Ava. She’s lying on the grass with her eyes closed, her hair fanned out in the grass. He admits that he takes her for granted a lot, always has. He’s always known she’ll be there for him and he barely gave her two thoughts most of the time unless he wanted something from her.
But seeing her last night lying in the street all bloody and broken, he knew that he never wants to lose her. He traces his finger across her forehead and says, “You scared me last night, you know?”
She opens her eyes to see his face hovering above her. “I was scared, too. But when I opened my eyes, there you were. And I knew you wouldn’t let anything happen to me.”
“But I did. If I wasn’t such an asshole, you wouldn’t have been there. I couldn’t even fix you, Liz had to.” His voice is full of regret and she leans up on her elbows.
“It’s not your fault. But let’s make a deal.” She holds out her pinky so he can hook his through it. “We always look out for each other when we’re up there.” She nods toward the sky. “I got your back, you got mine. Deal?”
“Deal.” They make a pinky swear like they used to when they were kids. “I just want you to know, I wanna thank you, you know? For always takin’ care of me. Even when I treated you like shit and you shoulda just kicked me in the ass. You’ve always been there for me and…and I appreciate it. I appreciate you.”
Ava looks at him a moment, melting at the sweet words he never says before she smiles and rolls her eyes. “Stop bein’ so cornball and kiss me.”
He growls and rolls on top of her as she laughs and he does what she asks.
~~~~~~~~~~

“So Miss Evans, what would you like to do with your last day on Earth?” Alex asks as they walk down Main Street. He brings her hand up to his lips and kisses it as well as the platinum bracelet he got her Valentine’s Day with the small heart dangling at her wrist.

“You know, I think we had to write an essay about this in the eighth grade. ‘What would you do if you knew this was your last day on Earth?’” Isabel says.

Alex smiles and says, “I remember that. I think I said that I’d eat all the hot dogs I could until I puked, then I’d spend the rest of the day swimming at the quarry with Liz and Maria. What’d you write?”

“I wrote that I would drive to California, meet Brad Pitt and make him fall in love with me. Then I’d spend all day with my family and we would play games and roast marshmallows.” Isabel laughs and asks, “You up for a road trip to California?”

Alex grimaces and says, “Brad Pitt? But he’s old.”

“He wasn’t when I was in eighth grade.” Isabel punches him lightly in the arm. “It’s better than eating hot dogs ‘til you puke.”

“Alright, I give you points for ambition.” He waits outside on the sidewalk while she goes in to get some coffee for them and he makes a quick call. When she comes out he says, “Well, I’m no Brad Pitt, but I love you, does that mean anything?”

Isabel stops as she raises her coffee to her mouth and looks over at him seriously. “It means everything.” Then she kisses him soundly before grabbing his hand and resuming their course down Main Street.

~~~~~~~~~~
It takes a few hours to calm down Liz’s parents enough to have a real discussion about what’s going on. Max and Liz didn’t give them all the details, just enough so they would know what’s happening. Liz also decided not to tell them about the baby. It’s a decision that Max’s parents didn’t agree with, but they did agree that it was Liz’s choice and they swore they wouldn’t say anything to the Parkers once they’re gone.
After promising her parents she would see them later that afternoon, Liz and Max leave to meet with Cal. On the ride over to the hotel, Liz lets out a long drawn out breath. “I feel so…”
“Drained?” Max offers. It wasn’t the easiest morning. Most of it spent with Jeff Parker looking at him like he was some kind of daughter-stealing monster.
“Light. I feel like this huge load has been lifted.” She turns to Max and asks, “Is that how you felt when you finally told your parents?”
“Yah, I guess I did. But it’s also strange. After spending my entire life lying to them, I suddenly didn’t have to anymore. It took a while to get used to it.” Max regrets the words as soon as they leave his mouth. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking…”
“It’s ok.” She smiles at him and puts her hand on his thigh and squeezes. “I’m kind of sad about it. I mean, I’ve wasted all this time lying to them and now that they know the truth…” He looks over at her and she doesn’t miss the hopeful glint in his eye. “But that doesn’t mean I’m not going, so get that thought right out of your head.”
He rolls his eyes and looks back at the road. “I didn’t say anything.”
“You didn’t have to,” she teases him. “You must be the world’s worst poker player, Max, because I can tell whatever you’re thinking just by the look on your face.”
“I happen to be a very good poker player,” he says defensively as he pulls into the hotel parking lot.
Liz doesn’t move when he turns the engine off. She’s watching a couple and their three kids walk across the parking lot toward the office and she asks, “What do you think everyone else is doing?”
“Considering it’s their last day on Earth? I don’t have to think too hard about that. I’m pretty sure I know what they’re doing.” He turns in his seat to see Liz looking out the window thoughtfully. “I know that if you weren’t going with me, I sure as hell wouldn’t be on my way to meet with Cal right now.”
She turns toward him with a smile and says, “Are you saying that you’re expecting some regular nookie while we’re on an alien planet fighting a war?”
“I am the king. I don’t think you’re allowed to deny me,” he smirks at her and she swats him on the arm before getting out of the car.
When Stephanie, Cal’s assistant, opens the door to his hotel room, Max is surprised to see Serena and Kyle inside. He thought they’d still be with the sheriff trying figure out what, if anything, he knows. They’re standing in the middle of the room with Cal, bent over something that he can’t see. “What’s going on?”
Kyle turns his head and says, “My dad? So knows everything.”
Max and Liz walk closer to see what has their attention. “How long has he known?” Max is really curious to hear how that conversation went.
“Pretty much since the beginning.” Kyle glances at Liz just in time to see her frown over that bit of news. “Yah, but that’s not the best part.” He steps to the side so they can see what Serena and Cal are still looking at. “He has souvenirs.”
“What is that?” Liz steps closer to look at the silver object in Serena’s hand.
“A communicator,” Cal says unhappily. “The one I had during the crash. The FBI took it from me and I haven’t seen it since.”
Max studies it closely, recognizing the symbol on the top. “What’s it communicate with?”
“Nothing. Not on this planet. They contain messages as well as a locator beacon. If it’s set off, pretty much every one from our solar system will know where we are,” Serena explains.
Max and Liz both realize at the same moment what it is they’re looking at and they back away. Liz shakes her head, a look of trepidation on her face, and says, “Put it away.”
Cal looks up at her, confused by her reaction and says, “This message might be important.”
“It’s not. We already know what it says,” Max says, and adds a little more firmly, “Put it away. If we set it off, every Skin on this planet will know exactly where we’re at.”
Cal shrugs and says, “It’s not like they don’t already. And it doesn’t matter, you’ll be gone by this time tomorrow.”
“It’s just a message from my mother, that’s it. She doesn’t say anything we don’t already know.” Max turns away and sits on a nearby sofa. “What the hell was the sheriff doing with it?”
“Turns out Roswell’s been quite the hotbed of activity since you took off, Evans. FBI, alien hunters, chemical research plants. They’ve all been coming here over the years looking for you,” Kyle tells him and turns to Liz. “And you. He stole that rock from Topolsky, remember her? That new counselor we had for a couple months?”
Liz’s eyes widen and she nods her head.
“Yah. And he got the uniform you were wearing when you were shot from MetaChem. They had other stuff there that was yours, too. He thinks they were going through your garbage.” Kyle sweeps his arm over toward the table on the far wall.
Liz walks over and sees a bunch of bagged items on the table, one of which is her old uniform. There’s also what looks like hair and… “Oh my God!” She turns to meet Serena and Kyle’s sympathetic gazes and says, “They stole my used pads out of the trash?!”
“Probably for the blood,” Serena offers with a shrug.
“No wonder your dad hounded me so much back then,” Liz says as she turns back to the table. “I mean, why would they collect all of this?” She sees old notebooks, pieces of notepaper she’d written on, printed out emails from her to various people. It makes her tired just thinking about it. “So if he was stealing all of this stuff for this many years, he must be ok with it, right?” She turns around and looks at Serena. “Does he know about you?”
Serena nods and Cal starts pacing. “This is unacceptable. We can’t have the sheriff of this town knowing everything about us.”
“What exactly do you suggest we do about it at this point?” Max asks sarcastically. “He hasn’t done anything with this knowledge in fifteen years, I doubt he’ll start shouting it from the rooftops now. I trust Kyle and Serena to handle him. Right now we have bigger things to worry about.”
Cal tosses the orb to Stephanie and says, “Lock this up. I want it in my vault when you go back to L.A.” When he turns back to Max he says, “I think Tess and Lonnie should be taken care of before. Taking them with you is a bad idea.”
“I agree.” Max leans forward, his elbows on his knees, already feeling exhausted. He starts thinking that maybe he should sleep for a few hours considering he’s been up all night and who knows how long it’ll be before he can sleep again.
“Max?” Liz turns her questioning gaze to him. When they discussed this last night, she was under the impression that he didn’t want to kill anyone.
Max sighs and says, “My parents were there. I didn’t want them thinking…I just don’t want them to see me as some sort of murderer. There’s no way I’m allowing them to get on the Granolith. It’ll draw them out and I’ll be there when they show up.”
Liz thinks over the plan. At first thinking that they don’t have to leave so soon if they take Tess and Lonnie out of the picture, but then she remember that they’ve started up the Granolith already. Serena said they have to be on it or it’ll leave without them. And the Granolith is what’s going to draw them out in the first place. “I assume you’re not planning on doing this by yourself?” She gives him a stern look.
“No. I can use Cal for this. He can’t kill them, but he can incapacitate them enough so that I can finish the job.” Max looks toward Cal for his agreement and gets it.
Chewing on her lip, not liking the idea of Max doing this, Liz says, “Maybe you should get Michael to go with you, and Zan. The three of you…”
“I’m not asking Zan to kill his own sister.”
“But she tried to kill him. I’m sure he won’t have a problem helping you,” Liz says.
Max shakes his head. “Liz, I’ll be fine.” He tries to reassure her by tugging on the leg of her jeans and pulling her closer to him. “You’re right, he probably wouldn’t have a problem with it, but I’m still not asking him to do that. And Michael, let’s let him and Maria have these last few hours together. I don’t want him involved in this, either.”
“Fine, then I’ll go with you. You kill Tess, I’ll kill Lonnie. That way you don’t have to, you know, kill someone who looks just like Isabel.”
“Oh my God, what are you two, like Bonnie and Clyde? This is…I shouldn’t be here listening to this. I’m a Deputy in the Sheriff’s Department and I’m listening to you guys talk about murdering two people.” Kyle throws his hands up in annoyance.
“What about taking their powers away, Cal? You can do that, then no one needs to die,” Serena suggests.
“I’m not risking it. If it doesn’t work, or if something goes wrong, we’ll be leaving them here and you’d have no protection from them. By the time we know if it’s really worked, we’ll be gone. And frankly, I’m not big on trusting Cal to do what he says he’s doing.” Max glances at him and says, “Sorry.”
Cal shrugs, not really caring either way. “I’ve got Stephanie taking care of the packing we talked about earlier on the phone. It’s hard to guess what you’ll need, so she’s packing just enough for one backpack each.”
“Good,” Max says, mentally checking that off from his to-do list. “And Larek? We need to contact him. He’s not due to check in for another week.”
“That’s a little more difficult. We don’t have time to make a trip down there. You might have to wing it and hope that he makes contact before the Granolith arrives there.” Cal doesn’t know of any other way to notify Larek that they’re coming. Max has to actually touch him and Brody is in Phoenix, too far to get there and back before the Granolith leaves.
Max grimaces and looks at his watch. It’s just after 11am now. “If I took your jet, I could be there in a little over an hour. I could send a message through Brody and Larek will contact you as soon as he can, probably sooner than next week. I could be back here by five.”
Cal sighs and says, “Alright, you better get going now then. I’ll call and make sure the jet’s ready. Oh, and a tip…you’ll all want to wear long sleeved white shirts.”
Thinking that’s an odd tip, Max nods and turns to Liz. “Why don’t you go spend the rest of the day with your parents.”
“Sounds good. You’ll be back in time to spend some time with yours, right?”
“I should be.”
“Is there anything you want me to do?” Serena asks, feeling a little helpless.
“Why don’t you and Cal keep an eye on the cave in case those two show up. If they do, don’t let them know you’re there. Just keep an eye on them in case they leave.” Max knows they’ll eventually find their way out there when they feel that the Granolith has been activated. He can feel it even stronger now.
Countdown: 12 hours
“So do you think they’ll just show up here out of the blue? How do they even know where this thing is?” Kyle asks from the spot he, Serena and Cal have chosen up on a hill overlooking the cave on the Indian reservation.
“They’ll know. They can feel its energy,” Serena explains. Kyle nods and steps away a few feet to search the surrounding area with his binoculars.
“You’ve changed your mind, haven’t you? About going?” Serena asks Cal.
He looks over at her in surprise, wondering how she knew.
“Earlier, when you told your assistant to put the orb in your vault, you said you wanted her to put it in there when she went back to L.A.” Serena picked up on his slip and held the hope that it meant he wasn’t planning on going back to L.A. with her.
“Guess you guilted me into it with all your talk of family honor.”
Serena rolls her eyes and says, “Guilt, such a human emotion.” She raises an eyebrow in question.
“Yah, well, let me hang onto any small amount of humanity I can before I lose it.” He sounds grumpy about it, and she finds it curious that he changed his mind based on what she said to him. Shapeshifters don’t tend to suffer from feelings of guilt.
“I’m glad.” She smiles at him, trying to convey as much sincerity as she can. “They need you.”
Cal makes a non-committal sound and turns away. He really doesn’t want to go. In fact, it’s probably at the end of a very long list of things he never wants to do. But over the last few days, he’s been remembering. Remembering his duty to his king, a duty that he’s ignored ever since they crashed on this planet. And he’s remembered the long line of king’s protectors that he has the honor of being a part of.
On Antar, there is no greater position for a shapeshifter than to be the king’s protector. His family has held the appointment for generations and when it was passed to him when Zan ascended to the throne, there wasn’t anything he would have rather done. But it was too soon for Zan. He was too young, too reckless. He knew it and he and Serena did their best to council the young king. And in the end, he failed to perform his most important duty, protect the life of the king.
The real reason he doesn’t want to go back to Antar is far more selfish than not wanting to give up his life on Earth. The real reason is that he doesn’t want to face the dishonor that will be waiting for him when he returns. There’s no doubt the contingent of shapeshifters that are still alive on Antar curse him on a daily basis. What it all comes down to is his cowardice. And it shames him.
“We’ll see,” he says. He doesn’t know how much help he’ll be given his track record. Distracted by the sound of Kyle stepping on a twig, Cal looks over at Kyle and says quietly, “You do know what will happen if they’re successful and Zan is able to reclaim the throne?” Serena looks down to the ground and nods. “Does your human know?”
“No,” she whispers. “I’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
“You’ve complicated matters by breeding. The people might not accept a Guardian who’s almost completely human,” he warns her, wondering what she was thinking.
Serena whips her head to Cal angrily. “They’ll have no choice.”
Cal studies the angry red color flooding her face, the look in her eyes, and says, “I’m beginning to wonder if Koltzor didn’t make you too human as well.”
~~~~~~~~~~

The living room of the Parker apartment is silent. Liz is sitting in a chair opposite her parents twisting her fingers unconsciously in her lap and suffering the accusing and hurt-filled glares being shot in her direction.

“I just can’t believe this,” Jeff Parker says for about the hundredth time since he learned the truth that morning.

Liz looks over at her mother who has glommed onto a box of Kleenex, creating a small pile of tear soaked tissues on the floor next to her. She’s not hysterical, not sobbing in grief. She’s just slowly leaking tears. Tears that don’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.

“Mom, please don’t cry,” she begs again. She can’t stand to sit here and watch her mother in tears. She can count on one hand the number of times in her life she’s seen the woman cry and it’s just unsettling. “We have a limited amount of time here. And I really don’t want to spend it with you guys upset and not talking to me.”

“Liz, do have any idea what you’ve gotten mixed up in here?” Liz is startled hearing her dad say something besides, ‘I just can’t believe this.’

“Mixed up in? Dad, have you been listening? I’ve been involved in this for over half my life.” Liz is really trying to keep her irritation under control, but they’re not making it easy for her. She sighs and tries to project a calmness that she’s not feeling. “I wouldn’t even be sitting here right now if it weren’t for Max. I’d be dead. I would have died when I was 15.”

“But does that mean you have to go fight his wars? Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for what he did. But that boy is an…an alien. You don’t know anything about him or the world he comes from.”

“Dad, that boy is the same one you were marrying me off to two days ago!” Liz exclaims. “He’s the same person. And I love him. I’ve loved him since the day he saved my life. I know that this is a lot for you to take in, and I know that you’re angry that I’ve been keeping this from you for so long. But you have to understand that this is something I have to do.”

Jeff sags even further back into the sofa and says, “I just feel like I don’t even know you anymore…that I never did.” His voice is full of sadness and regret.

“I’m still your daughter. I’ll never stop being that,” Liz says. “But this is my life now, it has been for a very long time.”

“I just can’t believe this,” Jeff repeats and Liz closes her eyes with a sigh. She rubs at her forehead and looks down at her watch at the second hand slowly ticking.
