Guys, thank you for your comments. :D Fine, I know I said I would be posting after 24th, but I will be very busy on the 24th because I have to go to a friend's party and if I wont, then he'll surely kill me. I guess, I will be out the whole day. And besides, a girl gotta do what a girl gotta do, right?

Anyway, I'm glad that Max has earned some greatness points. Thanks a lot again.

Part 10

MAX

I was waiting for her to finally arrive. I had arrived ten minutes earlier than the scheduled time. It was clear by this action of mine how eager I was to ask her all the questions that had been playing out in my mind all night long.

Yes, I had decided to… be with her in this. If she was the mother, than I was the father. It was my equal responsibility to look after a child that we made. I agree it was least expected but then again, life does take a 180° turn in a while. And besides, I didn’t want my child to grow up and ask his mother about his lost father. I wasn’t that mean.

But what really concerned me was that if we both did agree on this and our parents did help us, then what would be our relationship. The relationship of a child’s mother and father or anything else? That night was confusing… we did it unconsciously. But what would be our future relationship? It wasn’t as if I was counting on her or something but it still concerned me even though at that moment other things like ‘reaction of people’ should have concerned me. It did but I was still thinking about the future instead of only concentrating on the present.

I was sitting on a bench and kids were playing around me. Nearby, I saw a little three-year-old girl looking at me intently. When she saw me looking at her, she gave me a toothy grin. I smiled back even though I knew that the smile never reached my eyes.

She started walking towards me slowly, grinning all the way. I noticed a toy in her hands… wait, it was a Barbie.

“Hello.” I said, ruffling her hair.

She giggled.

“Ello.” I wanted to laugh at the way she said ‘hello.’

“What is that?” I asked her, pointing to the Barbie in her hands.

“She’s Sara.”

“Sara?”

She nodded.

“She’s ma best frien’.” She opened her arms wide to show me how ‘best’ her best friend was.

“Sarah?” I looked back to see a woman probably in her thirties standing there, frowning. I assumed it was her mother. It was clear that she was her mother when ‘Sarah’ said, “Mummy!”

Her mother started walking towards us while I asked Sarah,

“You and your best friend have the same name?”

She nodded.

“Sarah, what did I tell you about not moving around without my permission?” Her mother asked.

“I was jus’…”

Her mother interrupted, “Baby, you can tell me later.”

After glancing at me, Sarah walked away, waving.

I was so busy staring at her that I didn’t notice Liz standing behind me, watching the whole scene.

I felt somebody’s eyes on me and quickly turned around. There she was, wearing a three- quarter sleeve red top and dark blue jeans. She was dressed as usual but it was the dark circles around her eyes that made her look a little different. It was obvious that she had been crying or not getting enough sleep.

“Hi.” She said nervously while walking towards me.

“Hi.” I said and waited for her to sit down beside me.

She and I sat on far ends of the bench in complete silence for a few minutes, not looking at each other.

Finally, I broke the silence.

“Liz, why didn’t you tell me?”

She was quite shocked by my question, I guess. After staring at me for a few seconds, she said,

“I didn’t know myself.”

A feeling of relief came to me. I was quite heartbroken to hear that she had not told me but this answer changed my opinion.

“When did you get to know that you are…?” I couldn’t finish that question so I just looked away, waiting for her to answer.

“Two days ago.” She answered.

I glanced at her. I didn’t blame her for anything anymore.

“How… how did you find out?” It was a stupid question, actually. But at that moment, I wanted to know each and everything.

“Morning sickness, missed period… home pregnancy test.” She mumbled the last part. Maybe the word ‘pregnancy’ still shocked her.

I nodded.

“Max, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before. I…”

“Liz, it’s not your fault,” I interrupted, “You just got to know yourself two days ago. I can’t blame you for this.”

“But you can blame me for turning your world upside down.” She said with such emotion that I became speechless for a while.

She was right. My world had turned upside down. One moment I’m having lunch with my friends happily and the next moment I get to know that I am going to be a father.

As if reading my mind, she said,

“I didn’t want you to know the way you got to know.”

I looked at her.

“That’s not your fault either, Liz.”

It was as if she was blaming herself for everything but I wanted to tell her that everything was not her fault and I did.

“Liz, please. Don’t blame yourself for everything.”

“Are you kidding me? I am supposed to be blamed for everything.” She said angrily.

“Liz…”

“No, Max. I am pregnant. Do you hear me, Max? I am pregnant! And you know what, I’m not so happy to know that.” She bit out harshly.

Before I could say anything, she said,

“I disappointed everyone. Myself, my parents, friends and… you.” She said in a low voice. Her eyes were glistening with tears but I couldn’t do anything to make them disappear.

“How could you say I’m not supposed to be blamed…” She whispered, her eyes downcast.

“Because I am equally responsible, Liz. It takes two.”

“But I…”

“No buts, Liz. Whatever happened… it happened. Blaming each other will not solve our problems.”

She wiped her tears and nodded, sniffling.

“Did you go to the doctor?” I asked her, changing the subject.

“Yes. She told me to come regularly for check-ups.” She answered.

I gathered enough courage before I asked her my next question.

“Your parents know about this?”

Her jaw tightened, she just shook her head no.

I looked away and found Sarah playing with another girl who also had a Barbie.

“What are we going to do?” She questioned, snapping me out of my thoughts.

I glanced at her before answering the question.

“We have to tell them, Liz.”

She gasped. I looked at her.

“This means you are ready to…?” She didn’t need to finish the question because I had gotten it.

“Yes, Liz. I can’t kill a child who did nothing.”

Tears streaming down her face, she nodded.

“But I have to ask you this, anyway. Are you sure about this?” I asked.

She quickly nodded, making eye contact.

“Yes. I can’t kill my child either.”

I took a deep breath.

“We have to talk to our parents.”

“But how?”

“We will call them at one place and break the news. We don’t have any other choice.”

“And what if they say no?”

“Then we are going to think about something.”

“But one thing is clear, I am not going to do abortion even if they refuse.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

After a few seconds, she said,

“I am supposed to leave Roswell in two weeks.”

“And me in one week.”

“That means that we have to tell them this week.”

“You’re right. We can’t delay this any further.”

She nodded.

“So, as soon as my parents come back, I’ll call you.”

“Your parents are out of town? Mine are too.”

“So, are they going to come back this week?”

“They’re coming tomorrow.”

“Mine are coming tonight.”

I sighed. “Okay, then. I’ll call you. Can you give me your cell number?” I asked her.

“Yeah.”

After taking out a little piece of paper and a pen from her purse, she scribbled down her number.

I folded it and safely put it in my pocket.

“So only Alex and Maria know, right?”

“Yeah. They were shocked to say the least.”

I nodded. “They had to be.”

“Did you tell anyone?” She questioned.

“No, I had to talk to you first. And I’ve decided that I will tell them when we’ll tell our parents.”

“Okay.”

An awkward silence discomforted me.

“Liz, I just want you to know that I will help you. You don’t have to feel alone in this.”

She nodded.

“Thanks, Max.”

“You don’t need to thank me because I am the father and I have an equal responsibility.” I told her.

“Well, I have to go. My parents are going to be here tonight and I have to do some cleaning up before I finally arrive.”

“Okay.”

As she stood up, I couldn’t help saying,

“Liz, take care of yourself.”

She gave me a half smile. “I will.”

With that said, she left me there, staring after her.

Guys, thanks for the incredible feedback. :D

Part 11

LIZ

“Did you talk to him?” Maria asked me as I entered the Crashdown.

“Why do you think I went there?” I snapped and walked past her.

She followed me to the backroom and stood beside me as I opened my locker.

“I assume by your behavior that the talk didn’t go well?”

I sighed and turned to her.

“It didn’t go bad.”

“Then, what’s up with your mood?”

“We are thinking of telling our parents in a day or two.”

She raised her eyebrows.

“You sure?”

I nodded.

“Yes. I am supposed to leave Roswell in two weeks and him in one week. So that means we have to tell them now.” I told her.

“Anyway, was he pissed off?”

“He must have been but when I told him that I myself got to know two days ago, he looked relieved.”

“So, he didn’t say anything else?”

“We talked about everything, Maria. From A to Z.”

“No. What I mean to say that he is in this, right?”

“You don’t need to thank me because I am the father and I have an equal responsibility.”

“Yes. He told me that it’s his responsibility.”

Maria snickered, leaning her back against the lockers.

Frowning, I asked her, “What’s so funny?”

“And here you thought, quote: ‘Max Evans is irresponsible.’ Do you remember?”

I remembered. I had said that a few months ago when Maria was talking about his good looks.

“Max Evans is like sooo cute!”

“Yeah right. Max Evans is irresponsible.”

“Irresponsible? How could you tell?”

“His oh-so-cute looks tell me.”

“I remember.” I answered, looking away and leaning my side against the lockers.

“So, how are you going to break the news to the parents?”

“Max said we’ll call them at one of our places and break the news.”

“Just like that?” She asked, raising her eyebrows.

“Got any suggestions?” I said with a hint of smile on my lips.

She shook her head. “Nope. Not at all.”

“Maria, I’m scared…” I admitted suddenly.

She didn’t look much surprised.

“I’m pretty sure Max is too.”

I nodded. “He is. At least, that’s what he looked like.”

“Liz, if everything works out and stuff, then what about the future?” She asked me after a few minutes of silence.

I shrugged. “I don’t know. We haven’t discussed that yet. And it’s better if we don’t at this moment because I’m way too scared and my mind isn’t functioning properly.”

“Girlfriend, everything is going to be all right.”

“I hope so.” I whispered.

She wrapped an arm around my shoulders and I rested my head on her shoulder.

“Liz, I just want you to know that you’re not alone in this. I am here and will be here.” She told me.

“Liz, I just want you to know that I will help you. You don’t have to feel alone in this.”

I closed my eyes when his words came back to me. He and Maria had made me feel a lot relieved but the thought of my parents’ reaction scared me.

“I’m going to survive this, right?” I asked Maria.

“Yes, you will. God is going to help you.” She told me.

I looked up at the roof and believed so.

Maria had decided to stay till dinner. I needed her the most at the time and she made sure that she didn’t leave me. Alex was busy with some test that day but he had called me earlier to ask about the ‘talk’ that I had with Max.

I was glad that my friends and now Max were in this. I didn’t feel alone. But I was scared. Scared that if my parents’ would refuse, what would we do? My friends and Max told me that they would be still with me but would my child ever get to meet his grandparents? Would I have to leave this house and my parents for the sake of this child?

I was sitting in my bedroom when the bell rung. Maria was in the washroom.

I got out of my room and made my way towards the front door, knowing that it was my parents.

I opened the door and my parents and grandmother quickly stepped in. My grandmother had been absent for a few days; she had already been in Phoenix when my parents went there but I didn’t know she was coming the same day my parents were coming. Nevertheless, I was happy to see her.

“Grandma! I didn’t know you were coming tonight.” I told her as we hugged.

“Oh, I was missing you.” She said when we pulled away.

I grinned.

“Lizzie, how’s everything?” Dad asked, giving me a kiss on my cheek.

Nothing’s fine, I wanted to say.

“It’s fine, Dad.”

“And Crashdown? Aliens haven’t invaded it yet, have they?” Mom asked, taking off her glasses.

I chuckled even though I didn’t feel like.

“No, they haven’t yet. I was using the ‘no aliens’ spray to scare them away.” I joked.

She giggled and gave me a quick hug.

What would she do when I will tell her about my pregnancy?, I thought. But I brushed off those scary thoughts and tried to put up a fake mood.

“I knew you would take care of it.”

“I had Maria and Alex to help me.”

Just then, Maria entered the living room.

“Hohoho. Santa Maria is here.” She said, grinning at my parents and greeting them.

“It’s not Christmas yet, Ria.” Grandma told her.

Maria shrugged. “Oops.”

“Okay, we’ll just go and freshen up and then we’ll have dinner.” Mom said and then she and Dad disappeared in their bedroom.

“I will do the same.” Grandma told me and I smiled at her before she made her way towards her bedroom.

I took a deep breath and collapsed on the couch.

“What are they going to say when you will tell them about your pregnancy?” Maria asked more to herself than to me.

“That’s exactly what I’m wondering.” I replied, my head in my hands.

During dinner, we all talked about normal things. I would stare at their happy faces occasionally. I was pretty sure that these looks on their face would change the day I would break the news.

It was hard to not cry. I wanted to because I felt so hopeless. In one way, I wanted to tell them but in the other, I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to disappoint them but then again it was my decision. And I wasn’t going to change it for anything or anyone.

After dinner, my mother asked me,

“How are you feeling now, Liz?”

My father looked confused.

“Did anything happen to her?” He asked my mother.

“Oh, nothing. I got a little sick for a few days.” I told him.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

I shrugged. “I’m fine now.”

“It’s good to know that you’re fine now. I was getting a little worried about you over there.” Mom said, giving me a concerned smile.

Worried. No one was more worried than I was at the time.

After dinner, Maria decided to leave.

“Why don’t you stay over?” I whined as we stood in the doorway.

“Because I can’t.”

“What do you mean you can’t?”

“Liz, my mother is expecting me. And I know you’ll take care of yourself.”

“Fine, leave me. Go away.” I said angrily.

“Liz…”

I sighed and immediately felt guilty. I couldn’t force her to stay… she had her own life.

“I’m sorry. Go.”

“You’re not angry, right?” She asked.

“No, I am not.” I replied, smiling.

She gave me a quick hug and left the house.

I walked in the living room and didn’t find my mother there.

“Dad?”

He didn’t answer me. He was too busy in watching the game.

“Dad!”

He looked at me and smiled apologetically.

“What happened, sweetie?”

“Where's Mom?”

“She was looking for a pen and when she didn’t find one here, she went to your room.” He told me and then turned to watch T.V again.

“Oh, okay.” I said and walked to my room.

I entered and saw my mother standing there with wide eyes.

What was she eyeing me like that? Seriously though, she looked like somebody had just kicked her.

Frowning, I asked her, “Mom, what happened?”

She looked up at me.

“You’re pregnant.”

Guys, thanks for your comments. I see everyone of you is wondering how Nancy found out... Yeah, I like to be evil.

Anyway, answers to all your questions...

Part 12

MAX

I stared after her until she disappeared from my sight. I turned away and thought about our conversation. I was glad that she didn’t tell anyone besides her friends but I knew that my sister and Michael would be very furious with me for not telling them before.

But how the hell was I supposed to tell them? Go up to them and say, ‘Hey, guys. Look, I had a fling with a girl who is pregnant with my child. Some news, right?’ It wasn’t that simple, you see. Just like it wasn’t so simple to finally absorb the news that I was going to be a father in some months.

That thought concerned me. How the hell did I turn from a careless teenager to a father? It was magical but at the same time, it was scary. Scary because how was I supposed to face all those people who would truly be disappointed in me? And most importantly, how was I suppose to father a child in some months when I didn’t know a thing or two about life? It was scary, yes, it definitely was.

My parents were supposed to come in twenty-four hours and I was supposed to tell them that week. Not only them but Liz’s parents too. What would they say? They would definitely be angry at me… after all, I got their daughter pregnant.

I took a look at Sarah. She was sitting in her mother’s lap, too engrossed with getting rid of the petals from the flower. She looked so cute at that moment that I forgot all my fears for sometime and only one thing came to me… I was going to have a child. And as I said, it was magical but scary too.

After a few minutes, I decided to go home. After hearing such news, I was definitely trying to hold myself together. And I guess, I succeeded somehow.

When I went home, after changing, I turned in. After sleeping for exactly two hours, I decided to take a shower. When I came out of my room, I found my sister and Michael watching T.V.

“Hey, Max. Glad you made to the living room.” Michael teased, without even looking at me.

I sighed and took a seat next to him.

“I was sleeping, Michael.”

“Sure.” He said, nodding his head.

“Did you take a shower?” Isabel casually asked.

“Yes, I did.” I answered, wondering why she asked that question.

Michael switched off the television and groaned.

“No fucking good thing is coming today.”

“Hey, Max, parents are coming tomorrow.” Isabel said.

I shivered slightly. In one or two days they would know what their son was doing behind their backs.

“Max, I said something…” I looked up at Isabel.

“Oh, right. I knew that.”

She shrugged. “Just reminding you.”

“You didn’t have to.” I simply told her and walked to the kitchen.

They both followed me there.

They leaned against the counter and watched me as I took some juice from the refrigerator. I sighed and turned to them.

“What’s up, guys? Why are you eyeing me like that?”

“Max, Mike and I are wondering what has happened to you these days.” Isabel said.

“Nothing. I’m not feeling too good lately.” It was true, anyway.

“Like what happened, dude?” Michael asked.

“Yeah. These whole vacations, you’ve been down. Is there something wrong?” Isabel asked.

I shook my head no and managed to give them a small smile.

“Trust me, nothing’s wrong.” I said and left the kitchen, knowing that they didn’t believe a word I said.

But what the hell? Soon they were going to know what was wrong with me, anyway.

I entered my bedroom and noticed the paper that Liz had given to me. I decided to call her and talk about the meeting with our parents. I wanted to get over with it soon.

I dialed her cell number and waited impatiently for her to finally pick up the phone. After I don’t know, seven rings, she picked up the phone.

“Liz, Max here. Look, I know that we talked about telling our parents about your pregnancy and stuff. But I was wondering if we could break the news day after tomorrow? I… I really am scared. And I just want to get over it. So, what do you think?”

But she didn’t answer for some seconds.

“Liz?”

No answer.

“Liz, what hap-”

But before I could finish, she hung up the phone. Confused, I decided to try again but this time, no one picked up.

After fifteen minutes, I called her again. But her cell was switched off. What the hell?

* * * * * * * * * * *

LIZ

“Mom, what happened?”

She looked up at me.

“You’re pregnant.”

I gasped and stared at her. She’d got to be kidding me. How the hell did she get to know??

And then I noticed my cell phone in her hands…

“Mom, what are y-you talking a-about…?”

“Don’t lie to me, Elizabeth Parker.” She warned.

“Mom, I-”

Before I could finish, my cell started ringing. Mom placed the cell on my writing table and sunk to the floor. I was shocked and astounded but the cell kept ringing.

I walked closer and took my cell in my hands.

Max…

I just stared at the screen and finally the caller hung up. The cell slipped from my hand and fell to the ground.

Then it dawned on me. Mom had received Max’s call and he must have mentioned my pregnancy.

A tear rolled down my cheek as I stared ahead, not daring to look at my mother… too afraid to do so.

I was so not expecting her to find out like this. I brushed off my tear and tried not to cry.

“Close the door.” Mom said suddenly.

I didn’t say anything and trembling, I closed the door.

I turned to face her and saw her looking at me, tears in her eyes. I had caused them there… directly or indirectly, I did.

“Mom, I-”

“Why?” She asked.

I started sobbing and leaned against the door.

My mother immediately stood up and slowly walked to me.

“So, that’s what you have been doing behind our backs?” She questioned, accusingly.

I sobbed harder. After all, my whole world had collapsed yet again…

“Elizabeth, answer my question!”

She didn’t yell but the way she ordered, scared me to death.

“I… the graduation party…” I stopped, trying to form some understandable words.

“Oh, so it was that night, huh?”

I couldn’t answer her. I wont deny that I was ashamed and truly disgusted with what I did.

“How could you do this, Liz? You broke our trust in you…” She told me heartbreakingly.

“Mom, I didn’t mean to.” I whispered.

“I don’t care!” She practically yelled and then took a deep breath.

“When did you get to know?”

I sniffled. “Two days ago.”

She scoffed. “I knew it. And that's exactly why I asked you that day.”

“I was planning on telling you…”

“Yeah, I got to know that too from Max.”

She sat on the edge of my bed and in a low voice, said,

“I always thought of you as the responsible daughter. I can’t believe you…” She stopped, as if she was way too ashamed to say the words.

“I’m sorry…” I whimpered.

“Sorry? That’s all you have to say? Sorry?” She looked at me angrily.

I kept silent.

“Did you even think what would you say to your father? Your grandmother? To this whole goddamn world?”

I didn’t answer this time either and remained silent, wiping off my tears.

After a few seconds of silence, I suddenly said,

“I’m keeping the baby.”

She immediately looked up at me.

“What?”

“I’m keeping this baby.” I repeated, making eye contact with her.

“Liz, I don’t think so.” She warned.

“Whatever you say won’t change my mind. I can’t kill this child.” I told her.

“Look, Liz, we wont be killing your child exactly. Besides, you have your dreams and Harvard… I can’t agree with you… you have to do abortion.”

“I wont, Mom.”

She glared at me and stood up.

“Fine, go rot in hell.”

With that said, she walked past me and left the room, leaving me scared and confused.

Hmm, I know you guys have the same opinion about Nancy... that is, bitch! Yeah, I know she's a real bad mother. But I hope this part changes your opinion...

Part 13

LIZ

I sat in my balcony on the lawn chair. And thought about what had happened an hour ago. Huh, one more addition to my list of surprises.

It still amazed me that in such a short time, so much had happened. I had gotten nothing more than disappointments. And others had gotten nothing but disappointed in me. My mother was right, I should rot in hell.

And she was right too when she had asked me how was I planning to tell my father, my grandmother and to whole of this goddamn world. I may have had my best friends and the father of my child on my side but I didn’t think and neither expected my parents to finally agree with me and be there for me.

And here I was planning to tell everyone in one day. Huh, what was I thinking? My mother’s reaction was enough to scare the shit out of me and there I was planning to tell everyone in only one moment? That would definitely kill me.

But then again, I wouldn’t have to tell. My mother already knew and surely she would tell my father and everyone else. She would do the job for me that I was scared of. But that didn’t mean I wouldn’t be present there… that I wont hear whatever bad things they'd say.

I couldn’t blame them. After all, they were my parents. Parents who had brought me up, given me so many things and had high hopes for me. And there I was, shattering their each and every dream that they had dreamt about me, telling them I was going to be a mother and breaking their trust in me to pieces. I was an imperfect daughter. For so many years, they had assumed the opposite.

But I could have changed everything… have abortion and get my life on track. Go to Harvard, fulfill my dreams and make my parents proud. The only problem was, I couldn’t. I couldn’t kill a child just to fulfill mine and others’ dreams.

I sat there thinking about these things when I heard something. I turned around and saw my mother climbing out of my window. I gasped and quickly stood up, staring at her. She made eye contact with me and slowly started walking towards me.

But then she turned and stood by the wall, looking outside. I swallowed. I had to do it all over again… more explanation, more questions and more pain.

For many moments we both remained silent and then she broke the silence.

“You know, your father and I got married after graduating from college. We were in love.”

I frowned. Why was she telling me that? But I didn’t dare say anything.

“My parents were against it… they didn’t want me to get married until I had done my masters and stuff.”

She turned around and said,

“You must be wondering why I am telling you this?”

I gave her a small nod. She sighed and leaned against the wall.

“Liz, you are not in love with Max. And you have graduated high school, not college.”

I wanted to tell her that my life is different from hers… I couldn’t do what she did.

She walked towards me and stood a foot away from me.

“I think I knew what you were doing behind our backs…”

I looked up at her, shocked. What was she talking about?

“What do you mean?” I asked her.

She sighed. “That graduation party you went to… that night, I came in your room at around four. You weren’t there.”

“I… the graduation party…”

“Oh, so it was that night, huh?”

I just stared at her.

“I didn’t know what to think but I brushed it off, thinking you must be at one of your friend’s place. So, I unlocked your window.”

I sighed. So that’s why my window was open?

“Mom, I… I don’t know what to say…”

“You don’t have to.”

I looked up at her.

“I know it must be difficult for you. But think about it, Liz, can you give up all your plans and dreams?”

I swallowed. “Yes, I have already made my decision, Mom.”

She sighed.

“I was drunk.” I said suddenly.

“What?” She asked, confused.

“That night, I was drunk. Mom, I didn’t mean to… I don’t even know Max except his name.”

“You mean, he took advantage of you?” She frowned.

“No! No, he didn’t.” I answered, surprised by how quickly I came to his defense.

“Are you sure…?”

“Mom, he was drunk too.”

She nodded. I observed her for a few seconds and then said,

“I am sorry.”

She looked at me.

“I really am, Mom. I shattered your dreams and your trust. I am so sorry.” I sobbed.

She cupped my cheeks and said,

“Shhh. It’s okay…”

“No, Mom. It’s not. I disappointed you, Dad, Grandma… myself.”

I sobbed harder. She pulled me into her arms and I held on to her like a lifeline.

“I’m so sorry.” I kept whispering.

When my sobs died down, I pulled away, wiping my tears.

“Liz, I still want you to think over it.”

“Think about what, Mom? I am not changing my decision.” I told her.

“I know that. I am talking about you and Max.”

Me and Max?

“What about us?”

“You guys are not even friends, Liz. How are you going to do this together?”

I looked away and gulped.

“I… I don’t know.”

“Liz, I am worried about you. That’s all, sweetie.” She said, her eyes glistening with tears.

“Mom, I know I have not been the perfect daughter…”

“No, Liz. Don’t say that.” She interrupted.

I shook my head. “It’s true. I shattered all your hopes. And Mom, I know it’s difficult for you to get used to the fact that I am pregnant but I need your support. You know I can’t do this alone… I can’t lose you.”

She looked away. “Liz, I don’t know what to say to you…”

“Mom, please. Just say that you’ll be there for me…” I pleaded.

She looked up at me. “What if I say no? What if I say I’m not going to support you?”

I looked at my shoes. “I just have to say one thing, Mom. I don’t want to lose you.”

“Liz, how will you tell others? It’s not easy.” She told me.

“I know. And that’s why I need you. Please, Mom. I really need you.” I sobbed.

She pulled me into her arms.

“Shh…”

“Mom, please. Please.” I begged, holding on to her tight.

After a few seconds, I felt her shaking her head.

“Okay…” She said.

I pulled away and looked into her eyes.

“You mean…?” I gaped at her, getting my hopes high.

She nodded, giving me a small smile. “You’re still my baby girl, Liz. Now you are going to be standing in my position.” She said, caressing my cheek. “And I’m sorry, sweetie… about before. But you have to understand that it was all big news for me, totally unexpected. I’m sorry for saying such terrible things to you.”

I grinned and hugged her. As far as I was concerned, my mother was with me and that made me happy.

MAX

I was watching television in the living room when my cell started ringing. Michael had gone home and Isabel was in her room, sleeping I supposed. It was around eleven.

“Hello?” I said after picking up the phone.

“Umm… hi, Max.”

It was Liz.

“Liz. How are you? I called you earlier… why did you hang up?” I asked her.

She sighed. “I am much better now. Listen, I have to tell you something…”

My heart started beating faster. I didn’t want to hear anymore shocking news.

“My mother knows.”

“What?” All the air went out of my lungs for a second.

“She does. I never hung up your call… she did.”

Her mother hung up my call?

“What do you mean?”

“You had mentioned my pregnancy and she was the one on the other line… not me.”

I rubbed my forehead with my hands. What did I do? Goodness, why am I such a trouble for her?

“Oh, Liz. I… I didn’t mean to… I am sorry.”

“Max, it’s not your fault. You didn’t know.”

But I could have at least waited for you to say something before I started rambling, I wanted to say. But I held my tongue.

“What was… what did…?” I tried to ask, not really getting the correct words out of my mouth.

“She was very angry… and shocked.”

I closed my eyes. Shocked-hated that word.

“She told me to not have this baby.”

I nodded, even though I knew she couldn’t see me. “Figures.”

“But I told her I can’t. And after an hour, she came to me by herself.”

“And…?” I started growing impatient.

“She is with us, Max.”

I sighed. “Oh, man.”

“But I don’t know about others. What would they say?”

“I have no idea. Liz, we have to tell others soon.”

“I’m scared.” She whispered.

“I know. But we have to do this… sooner or later, we’d have to.”

“Right. Look, I am going to go and sleep. I’ll call you later.”

“Okay. Take care.”

“I will.” And then, she hung up.

“Who’s Liz?”

I turned around to see who just said that and saw Isabel standing there, her arms folded on her chest.

“Why do you want to know?” I asked her.

I was in no mood to talk to her because I knew that I could blurt out everything.

She stepped closer, standing by the side of the couch.

“I’m asking this because I know you don’t know any Liz…”

I sighed. “What if I do? Not a big deal to me.”

“Actually I hadn’t finished. I know only one Liz and that is Liz Parker.” She said, raising her eyebrows.

“There are many Liz’s in this world.” I stood up.

She shook her head. “Max, I know there is some secret that you are hiding from me.”

“So, can’t I have any secrets to myself?” I snapped.

“This is something big. You are in a big problem and you don’t want your sister to know.”

“What if I don’t?”

She looked upset. “I don’t know why are you doing this. You are acting like a jerk.”

“Look, Isabel, I have my own life too and I don’t think that telling you each and everything is a good idea.”

“You have changed. You really have.” She frowned.

I sighed, feeling guilty. I was really acting like a jerk.

“Isabel, I am sorry. But you have to trust me, I will tell you when the time is right.” I told her, taking her hand.

“Is this about that Liz?” She inquired.

I swallowed. “You’ll get to know soon.”

And with that said, I left her standing all confused.

Part 14

MAX

I woke up at around ten the next day. I wanted to go back to sleep but after tossing and turning in the bed for thirty minutes, I had no other choice but to give up the idea. After brushing my teeth, I went to the kitchen and saw my sister sitting on the table with a cup of coffee and newspaper blocking her face.

I yawned and scratched the back of my head. I wanted to greet her good morning but I was pretty sure she wouldn’t answer me. So, I proceeded to make myself a cup of coffee while she successfully, ignored me.

Just then the bell rang.

“I’ll get it,” I told her but she didn’t even look at me.

I opened the door and found my mother standing outside. She smiled when she saw me and took off her sunglasses.

“Hey Max.” She said and walked in.

Confused, I asked her, “Mom, you came so early?”

“Yes, we did.” She said, already walking towards the kitchen.

“Hey, Max.”

I turned to see my dad standing in front of me.

“You don’t mind taking those bags out of the car, do you?”

“Umm… I’ll do it… later.”

“Good. Thanks, son.” He said and patted my shoulder.

After two minutes, they both went to their bedroom.

After taking out their baggage from the car, I walked inside. Isabel was staring at me, standing in the doorway.

I collapsed to the couch when I finished my job. And from the corner of my eye, I saw Isabel walking to the shelf where pictures of our family from childhood were placed.

“Too bad our parents do not acknowledge our presence, anymore.” She said, tracing my mother’s picture on the frame.

“They have been doing this for many years now, Isabel. They have changed.”

“And so has my brother.” She said.

I looked at her and after glaring at me, she walked away.

After three hours, my parents came down for lunch. Isabel had already gone out but I was in no mood to go out. Besides, I had to talk to my parents.

We ate our lunch quietly and in the middle of the lunch, I said,

“Mom, Dad… I want you to come to Crashdown tomorrow.”

They both looked at me.

“Crashdown? You mean, that stupid alien restaurant?” Mom asked.

I sighed. “Yes, exactly.”

“I guess you are inviting us for lunch, huh?” Dad asked.

“Umm… yeah.” I answered.

“Oh wait, Philip. We have a meeting tomorrow, don’t we?” Mom said, looking at my father.

“Oh, yeah. Son, we’ll have to schedule this lunch some other day.”

God, I wanted to scream. They couldn’t even cancel their fucking meeting for their children anymore.

“Dad, this is important.” I told him.

“Well, why don’t you tell us now and right here?” Mom asked.

“That’s what the problem is… I can’t.”

“But Max, we have a meeting.” Mom said again.

“I know. And I would appreciate if you’d cancel it because I’m assuring you, whatever I have to tell you tomorrow, is important.”

They both exchanged glances with each other and then my father said,

“Okay, then. We’ll be there.”

After lunch, I decided to go and talk to Isabel who had just entered the house. I wasn’t planning on telling her but she had to know about
it the next day at Crashdown.

I knocked on her door.

“Who is it?” She asked.

“It’s me, Isabel.”

“Fuck off, Max.”

I rolled my eyes and turned the knob. Fortunately, the door was not locked. I saw her lying on her bed with some book in her hands.

She gasped when I entered.

“You know, I could have been naked in here.”

I shook my head. “No, you wouldn’t have been.”

She sat up. “What makes you think that?”

“You’d always lock the door, Isabel. You are not stupid.” I closed the door.

She sighed and went back to her reading. “Whatever.”

“Which book were you reading?”

She scoffed. “You suck in small talk, Max. Tell me, why are you here? To tell me to fuck off from your life again?”

“I never said that.”

“Yeah, but you meant it. Don’t think last night isn’t fresh in my mind, Max.” She glared at me.

“I came here to invite you.”

She raised her eyebrows. “Invite me?”

“Yes. You wanted to know my big secret, right?”

She looked confused but still nodded.

“I’ll tell you tomorrow at three in Crashdown. And not only you, but everyone. Including our parents.”

She frowned and stood up. “Mom and Dad?”

“Yeah. You were right, it is something really big.”

“Well then, why can’t you tell us now?” She questioned.

“As I said, it’s big.” I told her and before she could ask any more questions, I left her room.

Tomorrow everyone will know, I thought.

* * * * * * * * * * *

LIZ

I was lying on my bed, thinking, when Maria entered my room breathlessly.

I sat up on my elbows and frowned. What was she up to now?

“Maria…?”

“Oh Liz, I got your message.” She said sitting beside me.

I raised my eyebrows. “Oh, yeah.”

“And…?” She said, looking concerned.

I sat up straight and asked, “And what…?”

She scoffed. “Your message was like, ‘My mother knows…’ and you know what, Lizzie, I have no idea what she knows.” She pointed a finger at me.

I looked at her amused. “And still you came?”

“Assumptions could be made, girlfriend.” She told me, rolling her eyes.

“Right. She knows.”

“And what exactly does she know?” She asked, with a hint of annoyance in her voice.

“Max called me last night and my mother picked up the phone. He had mentioned my pregnancy without even waiting for the caller to say something.” I explained.

Maria placed a hand on her mouth.

“Oh, Liz.” She said, sympathetically.

“I know. She was very furious with me.”

She nodded. “I can imagine…”

“But after an hour or so, she came to me and we talked and all.”

“And…?” She questioned, growing impatient.

“She is with me, Maria.” I smiled brightly.

Maria grinned. “Really? Hey, that’s good news.”

I shook my head, my smile fading when realization flooded through me. “No, it isn’t. There are others too… and there opinion also counts.”

She rolled her eyes. “Liz, this is not a survey, okay? Just like your mother, they are going to understand too.”

“Something tells me they wont…” I said, ducking my head slightly.

“They will. Eventually, they will.”

I looked in her eyes and she gave me an encouraging smile. “I really want to believe you, Maria…”

She threw up her hands in the air. “God Liz, you are impossible!”

I just shrugged.

“Hey, when are you planning to tell them, anyway?” She questioned.

I swallowed. “Tomorrow.”

“You’ve talked to Max about this?”

And then I told her about mine and Max’s phone conversation earlier…

“Tomorrow is perfect.”

“No, Max. I am not ready.”

“Liz, lets not delay this any further. I told you before… sooner or later, we’d have to tell them.”

“Can’t it be later?”

“No, Liz. Your mother already knows… it’s time we tell everyone.”

“Max, no… I am scared.”

“Liz, Isabel and Michael are suspecting something… Isabel isn’t even talking to me.”

“Don’t blame me, Max.”

“I am not blaming you.”

“Okay. Fine. Tomorrow it is.”

“Liz, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to force you.”

“No, you didn’t. Sooner would be better. Being a chicken wont lead us anywhere.”

“You know, Max Evans isn’t a bad guy after all.” Maria said.

I just nodded.

“Liz…?”

“Hmm?” I said, coming out of my ‘thinking’ world.

“I’ve been meaning to ask you something…”

“Yeah, what?” I asked her.

“What if it all works out… you do know that you and Max will have to live together…”

I gulped nervously. “Yeah, I know that.”

“And what are you planning to do about it? I mean, you guys are not even friends.”

I looked up at her. “Then we will be.”

She shook her head. “Liz, you guys are going to be parents. And I don’t think you’d become friends with him in the first place.”

“What makes you think that?” I frowned.

“What makes me think that? Liz, you are talking to him now because of the baby. It’s all ‘baby, baby, and baby’. Tell me, Liz, if you weren’t pregnant right now, would you have even looked at Max Evans’ way?”

I just stared at her, not wanting to believe how true she was. Surely, I wouldn’t have even looked at his way. He would have disgusted me and I would have hated him even all the more.

“Maria, I don’t want to talk about this.” I told her.

“And why is that so?” She inquired.

“Because, Maria, in twenty-four hours, I have to tell everyone that I am pregnant! And you know what, it’s not easy!” I said angrily.

“So now, what? You are thinking about your present, Liz. What about your future? When are you going to start thinking about that?”

“You know what, Maria? I had a future… and that was in Boston. And not only had I thought about it, but completely planned it. And then the tables turned… my ‘planned’ future ended.” I reminded her.

She sighed. It made me angry to hear that I hadn’t thought about my future. How could I even think about it? All I knew was that my future would be confusing. Very confusing.

“I’m sorry. I think that for a moment, I forgot what kind of situation you are in.” She apologized, taking my hand in hers.

I squeezed her hand. “It’s okay…”

“Tell me, what can I do to help you?” She asked.

I smiled. “Just be there for me, Maria. Just be there.”

Guys, thanks for the feedback... :D Really appreciate it.

Anyway, I'm going out of town for three weeks so I wont be able to write. However, I have a few more chapters already written so I'll post one on Friday and then the other two sometime next week because I'm pretty sure you'd want to see what happens after this chapter... depends if I get time. I am sorry but I'll come to full writing mode once I'm back, ok?

Part 15

LIZ

“Where’s Dad?” I asked my mother as she entered the room.

“He’s coming.” She said and sighed.

I nodded slightly and rocked back and forth.

“Liz?” My mother asked, sitting beside me.

“Hmm?” I kept rocking and bit my lip.

“Is everything okay?”

I stopped my nervous movements and looked at her.

“Does it look like?”

She looked away and took a deep breath. “I know what you are thinking, Liz. But you have to remember that I will be with you… I wont break the promise.”

I gave her a small smile, feeling a bit relieved.

This was it. The day that I was not waiting for… the day that scared me shitless. How many stages had I gone through? Numerous stages, numerous conditions, numerous situations. And each and everyone one of them had their own surprises. But the biggest surprise of all was this day and the events that lead to it.

When Maria had left the previous day, I had recalled our conversation. In a way, Maria was right… what would be mine and Max’s relationship? And what about my college plans? Were they all going to go in the gutter? I knew that they would. I couldn’t change my mind and yet, here I was, thinking about my dead plans. The plans that I had made earlier and looked forward to were washed away in a few days.

I had come to a stage where I had to face the situations that I never thought of. I didn’t want to sit in front of my father and look at his disbelieving face after I tell him I’m pregnant. I didn’t want to hear Mr. And Mrs. Evans response either. And I didn’t want to see Isabel thinking not so highly of me. In fact, I never wanted to even see their faces.

I remember the time when I didn’t want to even look at Max’s way… it was as if that way was full of thorns and impurity. The way of pride and money. But I saw that that changed too. Max Evans came out as a person least expected. I realized that many did not know this side of him… that this side of his was private that he only saved for private moments. I always thought of Max being a careless person, a complete jerk. But I had to admit that the first time I talked to him, he made a good impression. And since then he had carried that impression behind his back whenever it came to me. I had seen the look on his face whenever I would mention the word 'baby’. It was completely different from all other expressions. It was… indescribable.

And here I was sitting, waiting for him to come. Suddenly, it looked as if he, my mother and Maria and Alex had became an important part of my life. Without their presence, I would feel lonely and guilty. With them, there was always this fact present in my mind that they know and they support me. They understand me. But in my father and grandmother’s presence, I feel like I am betraying them. It’s even hard to look them in the eye sometimes. My father had noticed that my mother had become awfully quite for some time but then my mother assured me that he was thinking that she was such stressed because of work. I felt guilty that my mother had to face such conditions just because of me.

My mother was rubbing her forehead when Max followed by his parents and sister entered the employees’ room. My mother suddenly stood up while I just shared a knowing look with Max. But when I looked at Isabel, I saw that she was staring at me with confusion written all over her face. Max had told me that his sister was suspicious but how far, I did not know.

“Max, what are we doing in here?” Mr. Evans asked. He looked incredibly confused too.

Just then, my father decided to step in.

“I am sorry, but this is employees’ room only.” Dad told them politely.

“Jeff, we have to talk to them.” Mom said.

“Yeah, umm… Dad, they are included in whatever I wanted to talk about with you.” Max told his parents and then glanced at me.

“Nancy?” Dad asked, frowning.

“Mr. and Mrs. Evans, why don’t you sit down.” Mom said and Max’s parents, after exchanging a glance with him, sat down while I walked towards Max.

Suddenly, I had the urge to take his hand in mine. I don’t know why that thought ever crossed my mind. Maybe because I wanted some encouragement, support… reassuring.

My mother came to stand beside me and I took her hand. I seriously needed some support.

“I don’t want to play any riddles with you so I am going to say this to you straight out. But I would really prefer that we talk this through like adults.” My mother said.

“Nancy, what is going on?” Dad asked.

Mom sighed and exchanged a look with me.

“Liz is pregnant with Max’s child.”

I closed my eyes before I could see their expressions. I bent my head… not because of shame but because I seriously did not want to see their faces even after I open my eyes.

“What?” Dad asked, more like yelled.

Even though I had closed my eyes, I couldn’t block my ears. Hearing their response was inevitable after all.

“Max, is this true?” That was Mr. Evans.

I immediately opened my eyes and looked at Max. I did not want him to feel like I didn’t care what his parents thought. He glanced at me and then said,

“Yes.”

I sighed and ducked my head even lower because I knew that all eyes were on me. It was as if I had become the center of attraction.

I admit that I found the situation extremely awkward and… frightening. Who knew that I’d have to stand in front of strangers and my own father in a situation like this? It looked like a nightmare and I resisted myself from pinching my arm. Even though it had been a lot of time since I’d found about my pregnancy, somehow that word still shocked me.

And now, it shocked them. How many situations like this was I going to face? First it was with Maria and Alex, which was quite scary but not that much because I knew that they would understand. Then came Max where the situation was awkward and extremely important… after all, he was the father. After that, it was with my mother, which was incredibly shocking and totally unexpected. And now, this… where half of the people in the room were looking at my mother like she had just gone paranoid and at me like I had done the most shameful deed of all.

“I can’t believe I am hearing this…” Mrs. Evans said.

I felt like crying. I had known that they wouldn’t be too sweet but it was as if they were eyeing me like a person who had no shame… no respect. Somehow, I found their expressions accusing. Not my father’s because he refused to look at me… he had a blank expression settled on his face.

But yes, I do think that I was feeling a lot more miserable than Max. He wasn’t that frightened… he met his parents’ gaze challengingly. Like somehow, he expected this kind of reaction. Like he knew each and every word that would come out of their mouths.

And Isabel… well, she was speechless like others. She would occasionally glance at Max… and I had no idea what things were hiding behind those looks.

“Look, I know it comes of as a very big shock to you but-” My mother started but got interrupted.

“Shock? Shock wouldn’t be the correct word, Mrs.…” Mrs. Evans said but stopped when she realized she had no idea about my mother’s name.

“Mrs. Parker.” Mom replied.

“Right. Look, Mrs. Parker, this matter is something that we have to handle. We had no idea what was going behind our backs.” Mrs. Evans said… even though I had no idea what she meant.

“But now you do know. And this matter could now be discussed without arguing.” Mom told her.

“Arguing? Huh, I do not even find the need to discuss it. The result is clear. Your daughter is not having this child!” Mr. Evans said.

I gasped and looked up at him. Who the fuck he thought he was? The controller of my life that he would go around ordering?

“I am sorry, Mr. Evans, but I am not losing this child.” I said, giving him a warning glare.

My mother squeezed my arm and told me she would handle things but I simply shook my head and looked angrily at Mr. Evans.

“I have no idea what you and your family is up to, young lady. But you have heard my decision. And if you want to keep the baby, go ahead. But I wont allow my son to be with you in this at any cost.” He said, standing up.

“Dad, stop it!” Max practically yelled.

“Stop what, Max? I am your father and I know this is a plan. Don’t you see it?”

“There’s nothing to see. Who the hell told you it’s a plan?” Max questioned, glaring at his father. I think even he was equally shocked at how his father had accused us of something that we would never do.

“I do not care, Maxwell. I am leaving and this whole thing is settled.” Mr. Evans said and after glaring at me, he walked past me and left the room.

Mrs. Evans soon followed and ignored their son calling their names. Isabel stood there for a few seconds and I noticed Max looking at her pleadingly but with her eyes downcast, she left the room. My father never looked up… he turned around and went out of the backdoor.

As for me, I felt numb. My eyes were settled on the opposite wall. The day had gone by even worst then expected.

Max hesitated to follow his family. He wanted to talk to them, I assumed. But it was my reaction that was stopping him I suppose.

Without looking at him, I said, “Go, Max.”

He still hesitated. “Liz…”

No, I did not want any apologies. “Go.” I told him, my voice more demanding this time.

And he did.

My mother took a step ahead in an attempt to follow my father but I tugged at her hand.

“Mom, please…. Do not leave me.” I begged, with tears glistening in my eyes. At this rate, I should have had broken down. I tried to keep my tears from falling down but soon did not succeed.

“Oh Liz…” Mom said, concern written all over face.

I threw my hands around her and cried my heart out. Tears… that’s all I was left with.

* * * * * * * * * * *

MAX

I drove to my home angrily. My family’s behavior had become intolerable and unbearable at the Crashdown. My parents hadn’t even hear us out and came to a negative decision.

I still couldn’t believe how my father had insulted Liz and her family. And how he had simply assumed that I was not going to be with Liz in this. I knew that their reaction would be worse but then in the end, he crossed the limits. And what remains a surprise to me still is the fact that Isabel and my mother never stood up for me. When I had pleaded with Isabel, she had just left me. And here she says I am her best friend.

I had a complete intention of talking this through with my parents once and for all. Yes, I knew that they were my parents but now I was over eighteen and they couldn’t make such big decisions for me.

I felt guilty for not saying a lot to my parents then and there. They had accused Liz and I had just said two sentences? And here I told her I would be supportive? Huh, I had seen how supportive I was.

I had seen the looks they were giving Liz but why hadn’t I dared to make them stop eyeing her like that? After all, we were now going to be parents. And if we would not trust, support and defend each other than who would? It was my fault a girl like Liz Parker was facing situations like these and yet, she was the one paying for it.

I reached my home and saw my parents’ car in the driveway. If they thought their son would be too mean to actually leave a girl whom he impregnated, then they were wrong.

I quickly unlocked the door with my keys and started yelling their names.

“Mom! Dad!”

I was so angry at that moment that I had the greatest urge to break a few things here and there.

My mother came out first and stood a few feet away from me, folding her arms on her chest.

“I knew you would come in the house like this, shouting on the top of your lungs. But the decision is made, Max… and it’s not going to change.” She told me.

I snorted. “Not going to change? Then what do you want me do to, Mom? Leave a pregnant woman alone? Huh, you’ve got to be kidding me.”

“Why the hell do you care now so much, Maxwell? If you do not want to leave her then tell her to get rid of the baby.” My father said, coming in the living room.

“Get rid of the baby? No, Dad. I will not let this innocent unborn child to pay for our wrongs.” I told them, glaring.

“Max, don’t you realize what you have done? People will now point fingers at us and we will be the biggest gossip in the whole town.” Mom said, taking a step closer.

I held my hand out to prevent her from coming close to me.

“Unlike you, Mom, I do not care about this society. I don’t care what they say.” I declared.

My mother frowned. “You’re telling your parents that you do not care about their respect? We have given you everything and that’s how you treat us?”

“Everything? Yes, you’re right… you have given me everything. Except one thing, Mom and that is love.” I confessed, unshed tears in my eyes.

My mother gasped.

“I do not want be like you both. I do not want to kill my own child or leave him alone. I am not like you and Dad… just not like you.” I said and immediately left the room.

As I slammed my door shut, I realized I had nothing with me… it was just me and my loneliness.

Thank you all. And thanks to anonymousarfan for reminding me by bumping that I have to post... lol.

And yeah, this is not edited...

Part 16

MAX

I stood by my window and stared outside. Now I had seen the true faces of my family. They didn’t care about lives but their status in the society. They didn’t care about relationships but their pride.

It hurt me to see them being so mean. They said that they had given us everything but that was not true. One thing that is mostly needed for a relationship to be strong is love and not money. But obviously, they never realized. And assuming from their reactions, they never would.

But if that lonely at the moment I was, then what about Liz? She had not only been insulted but had been looked upon as a shameful person. I felt way too guilty… she was in this position because of me.

At that moment, Isabel chose to come inside my room.

I turned around as soon as I saw her. I had no intention of talking to her or hearing what she had to say.

“Isabel, you can get out.” I ordered, looking intently at the trees outside.

I heard her sigh and then her footsteps, which were advancing towards me.

“Max, I… I know you probably don’t want to hear anything I have to say but…” She started speaking but stopped when I groaned.

“Probably? I’m damn sure I don’t want to hear anything.” I told her.

She came forward and put her hand on my shoulder.

I jerked her hand off and turned around.

“I seriously do not want to talk to you right now, Isabel.”

She shook her head. “I won’t leave until I make you hear it.”

“Hear what?” I asked angrily, “When I wanted to hear something from you an hour ago, you didn’t say a word. And now you’re here to tell me you want to say something? Huh, I think it’s too late, Isabel.”

I walked towards my bed but she followed me.

“What do you think I should have said, Max? You go ahead and drop this bomb on us and what do you expect from us?”

I stopped dead in my tracks and turned around, frowning.

“Yeah, you are right. I should have never expected anything from anyone… especially you.”

She sighed. “Max, please. I was shocked. I was out of words.”

I shook my head. “Yeah, I believe you,” I said sarcastically. “Now, you can leave.”

She took my hand in hers and held it against her cheek.

“I am sorry. God, you were alone over there. I understand what you must have been feeling.” She murmured.

“You have no idea, Isabel. I had hoped you would have had stood by my side but you didn’t.” I untangled my hand from hers and it fell to my side.

“And I am sorry. I just didn’t know how to react.” She pleaded.

I looked away, not wanting to forgive her. She had no idea how much pain had she caused me.

“I heard what our parents said to you when you came in…” She said after a few seconds of uncomfortable silence.

I looked up at her.

“And still you didn’t come…” I complained, folding my arms on my chest and returning my gaze to my shoes.

“Before I could get a chance, you had stormed off from the room.” She told me.

I didn’t say anything and kept staring at the ground.

She cupped my cheeks and forced me to look at her. “I am sorry, Max. No matter what our parents say, I am going to support you in this.”

My eyes bored into hers but still I didn’t say anything.

“I hated what Mom and Dad said to you. It was mean of them. I could have expected this kind of reaction from Dad but Mom… never.” She said, returning her hands to her sides.

When I didn’t say anything, she took my hands in hers. I looked up at her and saw tears glistening in her eyes.

“I am sorry and I will do anything to make it better.” She wept.

I sighed and pulled her into my arms. She rested her head on my shoulder and kept apologizing.

“It’s okay…” I replied to her apologies.

We stood like that for a few minutes but pulled away when my mother came in the room, calling Isabel’s name.

Mom stared at me and then turned to look at Isabel. Isabel squeezed our hands which were clasped together.

“Isabel, there’s a phone for you. It’s your boyfriend, Mark.”

I turned to my sister who shook her head.

“I’ll talk to him later. Right now, I’m busy with Max.” She said, giving Mom a ‘I-don’t-care’ look.

My mother had no intention of leaving the room as she crossed her arms and started talking. “So, now you are telling your brother to understand? Or are you telling him you’ll be supportive?”

Isabel shrugged. “Max will not kill this child no matter what.”

Mom just gaped at her. “Sweetie, don’t you understand what a big mistake your brother is making? This is going to ruin our family!”

Isabel raised her eyebrows. “Family? It’s strange to hear that word from your mouth, Mama. I doubt you even know the true meaning of this word.”

My mother glared at Isabel. “Don’t you dare talk to your mother like that.”

“Mom, it’s true. All you and Dad care about is what others think. Do you even know how much terrified Max is… Liz is? Don’t you think that instead of threatening them you should discuss things?”

“Discuss things? What do we have to possibly discuss about? It’s clear and final, Isabel. If Max wants to be with this Liz girl then he can go ahead and do that. But he should remember that the second he does that, he should forget about even glancing at this house.” She looked at me but I didn’t drop my gaze… I held up my head high because I was not scared a bit about what she said.

Isabel snickered. Mom looked at her confused.

“And when you’ll throw Max out of this house, what will the society say, Mom? Won’t then be people pointing at you?” Isabel questioned.

My mother looked away. She didn’t look like she wanted to discuss that as she just stormed off from the room.

Isabel sighed and turned to me.

“Max, everything is going to be all right.”

I looked at her hopeful face and forced myself to believe so.

LIZ

I walked up the stairs with my hand in my mother’s hand.

“Come on, Liz.” She’d order whenever I would stop. I was so afraid to go upstairs… I didn’t think I could handle any more bad comments.

I stopped in front of the door and my mother squeezed my hand. I just stood there, staring at the door and wished that the ground would tear apart and swallow me. Anything to save me from this hell.

My mother sighed annoyingly. “Liz, if you would not face your fears and try to run away, you wont be able to get through anything.”

I looked at her and then she smiled encouragingly. I nodded slightly.

We entered and found my father sitting on the couch in the living room.

“Jeff…” My mother let go of my hand and stepped closer towards the couch.

“You knew, didn’t you?” Dad asked, glaring at my mother.

My mother just nodded.

“And you didn’t tell me?” He rose from the couch and walked towards my mother.

“We had decided to tell you today.” She answered.

When my father’s expression did not change, she said, “Jeff, your daughter needs you in this.”

He raised his eyebrows. “You really expect me to do that?”

He turned to look at me with accusing eyes and I ducked my head slightly.

“Jeff…” Mom put her hand on his arm and he turned to her.

God, if it hadn’t been for my mother that day, I don’t know what would I have done.

“No, Nancy. I have heard enough downstairs. I just couldn’t expect my daughter to be doing these things behind our backs. But Liz proved it otherwise.”

A tear rolled down my cheek. I was tired of crying but the events forced me to.

“Jeff, please. She is your daughter and she made a mistake. And she is suffering, isn’t she? Jeff, your daughter just got insulted downstairs.” Mom reminded him.

My father started walking towards me. I didn’t look up at him.

“I didn’t even know you were dating Max Evans.” He said.

It was time I started talking. “I wasn’t dating Max. I got to know that Sean cheated on me and then I got drunk.”

He raised his eyebrows. “And after you let Max take advantage of you?”

I shook my head quickly. “He didn’t… take advantage of me.”

“I can’t believe you got drunk and then had unprotected sex.”

I remained silent.

“Liz, I don’t know what to say to you. I want to yell at you but I know that you wont change your mind for anything.”

I looked up at him, amazed at what he just said.

“But still, I am angry at you. And I am not going to forgive you so quickly. You do realize you have disappointed us, don’t you?”

“Dad, I never meant to hurt or disappoint you and Mom. I am really disappointed in myself but I don’t count this baby as a mistake. If I would have, then I would have been ready to have abortion. Whatever happened with Max was a mistake but this isn’t.” I answered, putting my hand on my belly.

My father stared at me for my boldness. His look still said that he was angry.

“And what about Max’s parents? I see Max is taking his responsibility but these Evans’ are going to make your life hell. Didn’t you see what they said downstairs?”

I sighed. “Dad, Max is going to take his responsibility. He has promised me.”

“And you believe him? Do you really trust him? Are you sure he’s not going to break his promise judging from his parents’ reaction?” He inquired.

I looked down. Could I really trust Max? After all, I knew nothing about him. But surprisingly enough, I did. I trusted him. When he had promised me, his eyes were not lying. He was not going to break his promise.

I looked up at my father. “I trust him. I do.”

He sighed. “I don’t know, Liz. There is Harvard… your career. I don’t know if I could let you ruin that.”

My mother stepped forward and put her hand on my father’s shoulder.

“Jeff, right now, this baby is more important. It was all a big blow to me too. Please be understanding.”

My father glanced at her and then turned to me.

“We are your parents. We are going to support you no matter what. You mean more to us than your career.” He said.

I smiled brightly through my tears.

He just nodded and then went to his room. I stared at his retreating form, confused.

“Your father still needs time, Liz. But you have to remember what he said… he is going to support you.” Mom said, hugging my side.

I rested my head on her shoulder and nodded.

Part 17

MAX

I was sitting on the benches of the basketball court, watching Michael as he dribbled the ball, skillfully.

“Maxwell, look at how I throw it…” Mike bragged, grinning when the ball passed through the basket.

I nodded absentmindedly.

“Max, you didn’t watch me, did you?” He questioned, stepping closer to me.

“Hmm?” I said, snapping out of my thoughts.

He sighed and rolled his eyes. “Never mind, man.” And then he returned to his basketball game.

As he continued playing, I recalled the conversation that I had with Liz the pervious day. It had been two days since the terrible confrontation with our respective parents. Liz had told me that her father was going to support her but wasn’t yet ready to talk to her. When I asked why, she said she didn’t know and thought he would need some time. I was glad that her parents weren’t against it anymore.

She had asked me what my parents had said afterwards to which I remained silent and said, ‘Nothing.’ I didn’t want to stress her anymore but I also knew that she didn’t believe me. She knew I was hiding something but didn’t push me. Besides, I was pretty sure she knew how my parents must have reacted afterwards.

Isabel had wanted to apologize to Liz. I’d told her to meet Liz and so, while I was sitting here with Michael, she had gone to the Crashdown. Liz didn’t know Isabel was going to see her. I had wanted to tell Liz but Isabel argued, saying that she did not want to make Liz uncomfortable even before she would enter the Crashdown. I had finally agreed with her.

“Maxwell, wake up.”

I looked up at Michael. He glanced sideways and I followed his gaze. It was none other than Maria Deluca, standing a few feet away from us, wearing baggy jeans and simple black top.

I sat up straight, confused as to what she was doing there.

Michael cleared his throat and said, “Umm… I’ll come by later, Maxwell. Chao.”

I nodded and soon he disappeared from my sight. Maria had already started walking towards me and I stepped down, coming to stand in front of her.

“Maria.” I said.

“Max, I… I know you must be terribly confused to see me here but I had to talk about something.” She said.

I frowned. “About Liz? Is she okay?”

“No, no… she’s fine.” She replied.

“Oh.”

“Umm… can we sit down, please?” She asked.

I slapped my forehead and smiled at her. Soon, we were sitting next to each other.

“I just wanted to talk to you about what’s going on these days.” She said.

I nodded, looking at her.

“I just wanted to make clear that your intentions are right.”

I blinked.

“Look, Max, I know I should probably mind my own business but Liz is my friend and clearly she has been through a lot lately. She trusts you, Max. And I just want to make sure you deserve that trust.”

I sighed. “Maria, I am not doing a favor on Liz or anyone else. It’s my responsibility, just like Liz.”

She slightly nodded. “You know, her father had asked her if she trusted you and she quickly said yes.”

I pressed my lips together. “Why are you telling me this?”

She shrugged. “Just to tell you that she really believes you wont break your promise.”

I sighed. “As I said, Maria, I wont. I still don’t understand why you don’t trust me.” I said softly.

“I do. But I have my doubts.”

“Is it because of my reputation?” I asked to which she remained silent.

“Maria, after this whole pregnancy thing, I have been taught a big lesson. A big realization has hit me. And besides, in these troubled times, I am more interested in what will happen than anything else.” I told her.

She nodded. “I am sorry. I just wanted to know if you…”

“Don’t worry. I wont be any more trouble.”

She gave me a small smile and stood up. “Well, that’s good to know. So are we friends?”

I stood up and shook her outstretched hand. “Yes, we are.”

We both smiled at each other then she started walking away.

She bumped into Michael and they stood staring at each other for a few seconds. The look that they were giving each other was priceless. I’d wanted to laugh at the situation… bumping into each other, falling in love… no, movies. Only happened in movies. I shook my head, wanting to laugh at myself for thinking about such foolish things. Maria and Michael were opposites, there was no way they had chemistry between them. I slapped my forehead, stepping back to reality.

But then again, there nervous movements were funny.

“Umm… I am sorry.” Mike said.

Maria just nodded and walked away. Michael simply stared at her retreating form.

I bit back a smile and walked up to him. It was not until I tapped on his shoulder that he moved.

“Mike, I should head back home. Lets go.” I said and he nodded.

When I reached my house, I noticed that my parents’ car wasn’t in the driveway. I brushed off the thought, assuming they must have gone for a meeting or something. I rung the bell because I knew Isabel was home… her car was in the driveway.

She opened the door and I stepped in.

“So, did you see Liz?” I asked.

She raised her eyebrows and then quickly shook her head. “No, she wasn’t…there.”

I nodded. “I told you to better give her a call.”

She beamed at me. “Yeah. Umm… Max, I wanted to talk to you.”

“Yeah, sure. Go ahead.” I said, collapsing on the couch.

She took a deep breath. “I had a talk with our parents about your situation.”

I frowned and sat up on my elbows. “What?”

“I never went to Liz’s place. As soon as you left, I talked to Mom and Dad.”

“Isabel, you-”

“Please,” She interrupted, “Let me finish. I yelled at them and stuff. An hour ago, they left the house without informing. And ten minutes ago, they called to tell me that they wanted you and I to immediately come to Crashdown.”

I stared at her, my mouth slightly open.

* * * * * * * * * * *

LIZ

I sat there, beside Max, waiting for someone to break the silence. I wasn’t sure how it had happened but his parents had called mine and so we were all there, sitting uncomfortably in this awkward silence.

Finally, it was my father who broke it. “Mr. And Mrs. Evans, we had also wanted to talk to you. I know that day before yesterday we were all confused and didn’t know how to react really but now we can talk this through.”

Philip Evans nodded while his wife sat beside him quietly.

I exchanged a glance with Max. He did not look too happy with this. His sister had left a while ago, wanting us to talk to our parents privately.

“Mr. Evans, Max and Liz do not want to lose this baby. We, Jeff and I, also agree with our daughter now. She wont have abortion.” Mom told them.

Diane Evans sighed. I wondered what she must have been thinking.

“Max wants to be with Liz in this but your opinion counts too.” Mom continued.

“Are you telling us that Max will support Liz even if we go against him?” Diane Evans asked, looking not at my mother but Max.

“Well, I believe… that that’s Max’s decision.” Mom replied, not really sure what to say.

“I will.” Max answered which caused me to look at him. I realized I wasn’t wrong at all when my father asked if I trusted Max.

Max’s mother sighed. “Before we start, I wanted to apologize to you and Liz for being really rude that day but you have to understand that we hadn’t known exactly how to react.”

I looked at her shocked. Was Diane Evans just apologizing to the rest of us?

“We understand.” Dad agreed, nodding his head.

“Diane and I had discussed this. It makes it difficult to know that they weren’t ever involved in a relationship.” Philip Evans said.

I swallowed. It makes it difficult for me too but at least I know that Max can be trusted.

“And so, we have come to a discussion. As you said, you agreed with your daughter. So this means, they’d have to change their college plans.” Diane said.

I looked surprisingly at her. Two days ago, she wanted to get rid of me from her son and then suddenly, she wanted us to change our college plans?

“You mean, so that they could live together?” Dad asked.

Max’s father nodded. “Exactly.”

“And we could help them financially together until they find some appropriate jobs.” Diane said.

I was pretty sure my mouth was hanging open at the moment. Surprises never refused to surround me. I looked at Max who looked even more surprised than me. It was totally unexpected.

“We suggest Max and Liz get married.” Philip said.

I gasped. Marriage?

“Yes, in this way, they would be able to support each other very well without being looked upon by people rudely.” Diane said.

But I didn’t care about people because the only thing in my mind was that they were planning our marriage.

I heard my father sigh. “I guess, I’d agree with you. I was thinking about the same thing.”

“I… I am not so sure about this whole thing.” Mom said.

But I didn’t care. My eyes were settled on the coffee table.

“Nancy? What are you talking about?” I heard my Dad ask her.

“Jeff, living together is okay but I think that we should leave the decision of getting married in the hands of Max and Liz.” She told them.

I didn’t care what was Max thinking either. Marriage?

“Yes, you are right. But it will be to their advantage.” Max's mother told them.

“I can’t get married.” I blurted out.

I slowly looked up at them and found that all the eyes were trained on me.

Max put his hand on mine. “Liz?”

I looked at him with tears in my eyes. “I can’t, Max. I can’t.”

And then I quickly rushed to my room, feeling all their eyes stabbing into my back.

Oh guys, thanks for the incredible feedback. I know I should be punished for my absence so any punishments would be accepted.

So, I got back from my long vacation on Sunday, got lazy for a few days then forced my ass back to writing last night. And so I am here with a new chapter. According to me it's long... I mean, almost eight pages on MS WORD.

Part 18

LIZ

I sat on the edge of my bed, studiously concentrating on a crack on the wall. How did my life come to such a stage? On my right, was the responsibility that I vowed to take and on my left was the marriage that was out of love. And as sudden as those paths came to introduce themselves to me, they merged their ways and became one. Now I had no options, I was just plain Liz Parker forced to accept the situation, forced to blindly let go of any possible options.

And then I started doubting myself. Had I made the right decisions that lead me here? But then again, how would I have known that the decision would leave me to this point… where I hadn’t been given any option and had to accept anything that was thrown my way. I had refused myself to think about my future, as the present was as depressing as it could be.

Automatically, my hand brushed over my abdomen. I looked down at my hand. And then it all came flooding back to me. If I wanted to keep this baby, then I had to face some difficulties that I knew would come.

But no, my life hadn’t become that difficult that I didn’t even had the permission to make my own decisions, my own choices. It was my decision to keep this baby, not caring about others’ refusal at any cost. And again, the decision was in my hands to marry Max or not. The decision was no. No matter what my parents, his parents and he himself said.

How could they even think that I was going to accept their decision? I didn’t even know Max… he was a total stranger to me. I certainly agreed that we had a sort of friendship. A sort of friendship that only involved talking about the baby and our parents. That’s all. We never talked about anything else. Topics discussed with him were depressing for both of us… I didn’t even remember laughing or giggling with him. Our conversations had themselves found a limit… or maybe we had found a limit that we never talked about anything else. Above all, we didn’t even talked much. And here, I was being asked to marry him.

It was so confusing and awkward with him when it came to conversations. I wondered why it wasn’t so awkward when I was making love to him. When he was touching me on places nobody had touched, when his tongue was exploring every inch of body, when he was finally moving inside me… showing me heaven. Why was it that when he looked at me, it wasn’t awkward and most importantly, why even a slightest touch was not awkward but comfortable? I might not remember that night completely but I was sure it hadn't been awkward.

Max Evans was a nice guy but I wasn’t going to marry him. And the reason as to why was simple. I wasn’t in love with him. I wasn’t even sure what I felt for him… we weren’t even friends for God’s sake!

As I sat there, the sound of the knocking on my door broke the train of my thoughts. I stood up and unlocked the door, opening it wide enough for the person to enter.

“Hi.”

We just remained silent for a while and then suddenly he said, “Can I come in?”

I nodded slightly and he entered my room. I noticed he didn’t even politely smiled at me when he asked to come in. And then I remembered, Max Evans never smiled in my presence. I didn’t remember a lot about what happened the night we made love so it was an exception.

Maybe he was thinking the same thing that I was. Wait, I knew he didn’t want to marry me. I agreed Max Evans did many things to surprise all but it would be no surprise if he refused to marry me. After all, he was Max Evans and he was in the same situation that I was in… sandwiched between making choices and trying to hold on to the responsibility.

He turned around to face me.

“I just… wanted to give you time to think things over.”

I stared at him in surprise, caught off guard.

“What do you mean?”

“You know, to think about what you said outside.” He answered.

I shook my head slightly. “I’m sorry if my decision offended anyone but… I can’t…” I trailed off, looking down at the floor.

“Marry me.” He finished for me and I nodded.

Somehow I couldn’t look him in the eye.

“I know you agree with me.” I told him, looking at him.

“Hmm?” He said, surprisingly looking at me. “Yeah, umm… I do agree with you.” He ducked his head and then scratched the back of his neck rather awkwardly.

I nodded slowly, confused with his reaction. A small frown ceased my forehead when he kept staring at my bed.

“Max, are you all right?” I asked him.

“Yeah, I’m okay. Look, uh… I have to go now. I’ll talk to you later.”

As he walked past me, I decided to ask him,

“If I had said yes to marrying you, what would you have said?”

I heard his footsteps coming to a stop and I turned around slowly to face him.

“Would you have agreed?”

He didn’t turn around and replied, “I don’t know.”

And before I could ask him why he said that, he was out of my room.

I heard some sound of harsh breathing outside. Confused, I just stared at the door that obviously blocked my view. But when I opened the door, he was nowhere to be seen.

Hours later, I sat at the dining table accompanied by my parents with my head in my hands.

“So, you think it’s right to get married to Max?” I asked, looking up at my father.

“Liz, do you want others to point their fingers at you or gossip about you?” He asked.

“I don’t care!”

“I always thought of you as the intelligent one. Most people in your position do the same, Lizzie. I am not trying to be the bad guy here.” He said.

I swallowed. “I know you are just looking after me but I am not happy that this thought even crossed your mind and that you are actually pressuring me to accept your decision.”

“I am not pressuring you! You are very much aware of the fact that the decision is ultimately in your hands.” He argued.

“Decision in my hands? When was the time it was in my hands? Last time I checked, you were declaring you decision in front of five people.” I bit out.

“What about the baby? Whose decision was it? Mine or yours?”

I just stared at him, stunned speechless.

“Look, arguments wont lead us anywhere. We have to compromise, Jeff.” My mother told Dad.

He looked at her unbelievably.

“You are telling me to compromise, Nancy? I am trying to make my daughter’s life better, can’t you see?” He questioned.

Mom put her hand on his forearm.

“Jeff, don’t you realize how much she has sacrificed? She has sacrificed her future, can’t you see that?”

“And whose fault is that, Nancy. I didn’t tell her to go ahead and have unprotected sex.” Dad said, causing me to flinch on his accusing tone.

“Please, stop it!” I practically yelled.

When they both quite down, I continued, “You are talking like I’m not present in the room!”

“Liz, please… can’t we discuss like responsible adults?” Mom asked.

I sighed. My mother was just trying to maintain a peaceful atmosphere and here I was, destroying it. She was taking my side so there was no way I could go against her or turn down whatever she told me.

“I’m sorry.” I murmured.

“Jeff, I agree with Liz. You are pushing Liz to an unwanted marriage.” Mom reminds Dad.

“We don’t have any other choice!” He told her.

“There are many solutions rather than marriage.”

“Like what?” He inquired.

Mom looked at me and then said, “Max and Liz don’t have to marry to raise a child together. They can live together and once the baby’s born, they could think about what to do.”

“And what about the society? What will people say when they will see your daughter’s pregnant belly?”

“Please, Jeff! Forget about the society for a while, would you? Your daughter should be your main interest right now.” She scolded him.

He sighed and rubbed his forehead, looking down at the table.

After a moment of silence, I said, “Daddy, I can’t… I can’t marry him, please. Try to understand me.”

Without saying a word, he stood up and walked out of the kitchen in an angry manner.

My mother placed her hand over mine and said, “He’ll come around, Liz. He definitely will.”

* * * * * * * * * * *

MAX

I took a deep draw on my cigarette and stared at the smoke around me. Resting my head back, I did it again, this time deeper.

When I had come home, without greeting my parents, I had simply stormed by them and into my bedroom, locking its door. I wasn’t prepared to hear what they had to say and neither was interested. And then trying to look for some distraction, I took out the cigarette packet and the bottle of wine that I had locked in my drawer.

Outside my window, I saw the sun setting down; causing the sky to be in different shades of yellow, then orange and with time the sky changed its colors. How beautiful it was.

How beautiful was she. I still remembered the first time I talked to her in a drunken state. She looked like she was in hell but to me she looked beautiful. I wondered why hadn’t I realized that at the moment. And then, when in the garden she flashed me that beautiful bright smile of hers, I was struck by her simplicity. I wanted to kiss her and when I finally did, I wanted her to be mine… not just for that night alone but for a longer time, possibly forever.

God, I wanted her so much. I could still feel her begging me not to stop, moaning beneath me… breathing out my name wherever I would touch her. It had given me such pride that I was the one who was giving her so much pleasure. I hadn’t cared about anything else when I was making love to her… it was like I was in this whole new world that I didn’t want to leave. And then afterwards, I had made love to her again and again because it gave me such pleasure to see her coming for me until we both tired out and slept in each other’s arms.

Somehow, after that night, I couldn’t get myself to touch another woman. Now I knew why. The last few days were spent worrying but I was always looking forward to talk to Liz… even though our conversations were always awkward and revolved around depressing topics.

“Max?”

I sighed, sitting up straight but not turning around to face my sister.

“You should knock.” I said.

“I don’t have to if you don’t.” She told me and stood beside me.

“You’re smoking.” She complains, “And drinking.”

“So?”

“Tell me what happened today.” She asks.

Her head momentarily evaporated behind a cloud of smoke.

“Nothing special.” I replied.

She kneeled down and said, “You don’t tell me and I don’t leave this room.”

I glared at her and then turned away my gaze. “You could ask Mom. I am not in the mood to talk.”

“She refuses to talk about it and besides, I am not on speaking terms with her.”

“Isabel, please… I am not feeling so good.”

She placed her hand over mine and said, “You could share it with me.”

I sighed. “Well, first Mom and Dad apologized to me and Liz for their behavior…”

“Good. And…?”

“And they… asked me and her to get… married.”

“What?” She regarded me in surprise.

“Yes and Liz and I refused. That’s it.”

“What about Liz’s parents? What did they say?” She questioned.

“I don’t know about her mother but her father seemed to agree with our parents.”

“Oh God, Max. I am so… so sorry.” She said, giving me a pleading look.

“It’s not your fault.”

“So… now, what happens?”

“I don’t know what happens but I do know what this means.”

A small frown ceased her forehead. “What does it mean?”

“That Liz and I are going to live together… unmarried. And one of us would have to change our college plans.” I told her.

“And who would that be?”

I just looked at her with a blank expression.

“No, Max… not you.”

“I’d have to Isabel.”

“But…” She argues.

“There are no buts, Isabel. I am not going to let Liz do this. She has already gone through a lot.”

“You obviously care a lot about her.”

“Whatever you call that.” I mumble.

“What was that?” She asked, confused.

“Nothing.”

She sighed. “What if you both have to change your college plans?”

I remained silent for a while. “Maybe.”

“Max, is there something you are not telling me?” She asked after studying me for a while.

“No, what makes you think that?” I frowned.

“It’s just that… you are acting very, very different today.”

I looked away from her. “I have been acting very differently lately, Iz. And you know why.”

She ducked her hand and squeezed my hand. “Everything is going to fine.”

And then she stood up, gave me a kiss on my cheek and left the room quietly.

But she didn’t know that there was something that I was really hiding from her… from everyone else.

I wanted to marry Liz Parker. And the reason was simple. I was in love with her.

Hey, guys! I am sorry that it took me 11 days to finally post.

Anyway, I figured we were going real slow so I skipped somethings.

Part 19

LIZ

“Alex! Oh goodness, what’s the hurry?”

“I need to pee.” He answered, jumping slightly.

“Uh… okay, but that doesn’t mean you cause a pregnant woman to run after you.” I scolded him.

“Oh, I am so sorry, sweetheart. Okay, here’s the thing… I am going to go to the washroom while you stay right here, okay?”

“All right. But what if during that time, our bags pass by? You know I won’t be able to carry those bags.” I told him, suddenly remembering the instructions of my mother.

“Okay, three month pregnant woman, do you want me to piss in my pants?”

I made a disgusting face. “Go!”

I walked away from the crowd of people gathering over there. Goodness, how many people came to New York, I thought.

Alex and I had come in the first class here to New York. It wasn’t as if it was my first time in New York, I had been there before but this time, it was different. That’s because I was going to live there for a long time… possibly, forever.

When Max left Roswell for New York, which was a week after he had previously planned to, he called me frequently. And our calls only lasted for five minutes or even lesser then that because they onlyrevolved around our baby, his and my college, parents and… silence. But before he left Roswell, he was quite busy packing and stuff so we didn’t meet much.

After our respective parents had agreed on us living together, I dropped one more bomb on them. And that was… I couldn’t go to Harvard. Max was dissatisfied at first but after a lot of insistence, he agreed.

I still remembered the time when he had asked me why I was doing that to which I said, “I don’t want to ruin your plans.” And then he asked, “And what about yours?” to which I remained silent.

Max and I had progressed our whatever relationship after everything was settled. Okay, well to me, those few phone calls were bonus points to our relationship. Max and I were friends but what kind of friends was a mystery. He wasn’t my best friend or a good friend, no… not at all. He was just a… friend. When he had told me that he was going to pick Alex and me up from the airport, I was quite surprised… seeing that I never went to drop him off at the airport.

Max had even looked for a good apartment. He had told me that except my room, everything else was furnished and that when I would come, he would take me to choose the furniture that I wanted. I told him I wanted white room with everything white – from curtains to bed sheets to walls to doors - and he had laughed saying I loved white too much.

“Liz!”

I turned around to see Alex hurrying towards me. And that was the moment I noticed something, Alex had gained weight… or more specifically, body.

“Okay, look…”

“Hey, have you been working out?” I interrupted him.

He frowned at me. “Darling, we were about to talk about our luggage, not my body.”

“You have been working out!” I grinned, pointing a finger at him. “I thought you hated it.”

He just looked at me innocently. “I never said I hated it.”

“Oh, then those seventeen times you said it must have been my imagination.”

He rolled his eyes. “Whatever. Anyway, stay here. I am going to get the bags.”

“All right. I’ll be sitting over there.” I pointed towards the empty seat in a distance.

“Okay.” He said and walked away.

Alex had come with me to New York to see his uncle. He had planned to start college next year because the Whitmans’ still wanted to earn some money and save it for his college. So, Alex had gotten pretty fine jobs in Roswell. He had taken a three-day vacation from his work and decided to come with me. The bad thing was that he was there with me for only three days and then he would leave me all alone… and I only knew Max Evans in that big city.

Holding off college was a big decision for me and I knew how much it affected my parents. They weren’t to all happy with me. But soon they figured out that I was old enough to make my decisions, to think about what was best for me. My mother had supported me but my father had totally freaked out, as he was keen to send me to Harvard ever since I was a small child . Shattering his dreams wasn’t easy for me… considering that those were my dreams too. But sometimes, you had to make sacrifices… maybe not for yourself but for others sake.

“Liz!”

“Huh?” I asked, suddenly coming out of my daze.

“What, you want to sit here all day? Max must be waiting outside.” He reminded me.

“Oh… yeah.” I said, picking up my purse and walking beside him to the exit.

“What were you thinking?” He questioned, softly this time.

I gave him a small smile. “I was thinking about what happened this last month. I just… God, I am going to miss you guys so much. I miss Maria already and then you’ll go too…”

“Liz, no matter what, we’ll always be your friend and whenever you get sad, just close your eyes and think about the good times we shared… you’ll feel a lot better.”

“Maybe.” I murmured, after giving him a light kiss on his cheek.

“Well, I know that the past three months have been a headache for you and I apologize for not being there.” He said, lowering his gaze.

I gave him a disbelieving look. “What are you talking about? You were always there for me.”

“Not always… sometimes. Not like Maria.”

I stopped him by grabbing his arm. “If anyone has given me the courage to stand here right now in New York, it’s you and Ria. And yes, maybe you were not always there, but you were. And that’s what matters.”

He gave me a kiss on my forehead. “Lizzie, we love you.”

“I love you guys too.” I said, grinning. And then Alex looked a lot better than a minute ago.

“You know, stay with your uncle for two days and then stay at my new place. What do you think?”

“Hmm… I’ll see. But you know, it depends on Max.” He replied.

I frowned. “Oh no, he wont mind at all. I am pretty sure we'd have enough food to feed you.”

He rolled his eyes. “Well, I have started dieting.”

I raised my eyebrows. “You have?”

“Yep. I am a strong man now.” He said, proudly.

“Okay, well, then I guess it must have been an elephant eating three ice cream cones yesterday.” I smirked.

He blushed. “Well…” He trailed off, then smiled at something he saw.

I followed his gaze and I was pretty sure my heart stopped beating for a second. Max Evans was three… closing the distance between us by walking and smiling all the way. And goodness, he looked different.

“Hey.” He said, after greeting Alex.

“Hi.” I said shyly, even though I didn’t know for what I was being shy.

“Let me help you.”

And then Max was taking two heavy suitcases from Alex.

“Oh, oh… you… you, Mr. Evans, are well, something. Thank you, thank you, thank you.” Alex said.

I held back my laughter while Max just looked at Alex, totally confused.

“Uh… okay.” Max said.

Alex blushed. “Umm… sorry. You know how a person starts reacting when he practically lives his life with two gossip girls.”

I gave him a swift kick in the ankle. “Oww. What was that for?” He asked.

I glanced at Max who found this amusing as he was smiling that way.

“Uh… okay, I think we should get moving.” He said.

“Hell, yeah. Or this pregnant lady would kill me.” Alex complained, already walking away.

Max’s look totally changed. “Liz… how are you? And the baby?”

I started walking beside him. “Well, we both are good.”

“I mean, is the baby… uhh…” He trailed off, clearly not knowing the correct word.

“Hurting me?”

He smiled. “Well, not the correct word… but yeah, something like that.”

“To tell you the truth, it’s not. But I do get this wierd feeling sometimes… you know.”

“Oh. But everything’s okay right?” He inquired.

I wanted to smile at his concern. “Yep, everything’s well.”

“You sure?” He asked again, unsure of himself I supposed.

I gave him an assuring smile. “Positive.”

“Hey, Max! Where’s your baby?” Alex yelled from a distance.

It was when we were almost in front of Alex did Max answer, “What baby?”

“You know, your car. Liz had told us that you bought a brand new car so it must be your baby, right?” Alex asked, looking excited.

I rolled my eyes.

Max just beamed. “Yeah, kind of is.”

As Max and Alex started loading the suitcases in Max’s brand new car, I thought about the conversation he and I had two minutes ago. Max’s concern affected me… a lot, actually. I knew he cared less about me but at least he did somewhat. Even if it is only for the baby, I thought.

But those depressing thoughts were quickly dismissed as soon as Alex called my name. I joined him and Max and soon we hit the road.

“So Alex, you are going to be here with us, right?” Max asked, glancing at Alex through the rear view mirror.

Alex poked his head forward and said, “No, not with you guys. With my uncle.”

“Oh.” Max said, glancing at me.

“I am sorry I didn’t tell you before. It was just that, too many things were going in my mind…” I told Max.

But he cut me off. “No, it's all right, Liz. You didn’t have to tell me.”

“Hmm… anyway, here’s the address.” Alex said, handling Max a piece of paper then settling back down in his seat comfortably, playing with a string of his guitar.

“Okay, shall I drop you now?” Max asked.

“Yeah, I just can’t wait to see that guitar my uncle has, man.” Alex replied, sounding excited.

I rolled my eyes. Sometimes, Alex did act like a guy.

“You know the directions, right?”

I glared at Alex who just shrugged.

“Yeah, I guess. I mean, I am quite familiar with the directions now.” Max answered, smiling.

And Alex only smiled back. God, I just wondered why does he have to be like Maria sometimes.

MAX

Sometimes I wondered if she noticed me glancing at her every time I got a chance. But her expression remained the same; she didn’t look at me and never had the look that assured me she knew I was watching her.

Damn, I had missed her. Every single day, I would think about her. I would sleep with the intention of dreaming about her and wake up with her beautiful face still fresh in my mind. Anybody else would have called this an obsession but I knew that it was love. And not the kind of love that would disappear any day but the true love that I knew would last forever.

When Liz had told me a month ago that she was not going to go the college, I was surprised to say the least. I hadn’t expected her to do that but she hadn’t changed her mind. She stuck to her decision and almost forced me to accept it. I tried my best to change her mind but she wouldn’t. She was keen on putting a hold on her plans and then I had thought, who was I anyway to poke my nose into her business. It was clear that she didn’t want to listen to me so I backed off, finally accepting her decision.

I had wanted her to come to New York in less than a month but never voiced my opinion. I knew that she would come whenever she would be ready and it took her a month to finally let go of Roswell. I knew it wasn’t easy for her, as she didn’t know when would be the next time she would go to Roswell.

But the reason behind it made me happy. That she was doing all this for our baby and there was no doubt in my mind that Liz Parker would prove to be a great mother. She had decided to devote all of her time into her pregnancy and I accepted her decision, as I wanted her to.

I looked at her again after making sure Alex was busy with his guitar. She was looking outside the window staring at everything different she saw out there.

“Huge, huh?” I asked.

“Huh? Yeah… yeah, it is.” She answered then looked away.

A small frown ceased my forehead. “Liz, you okay?”

“Yeah. I just… can’t believe that I’m here. The month dragged by so quickly.” She replied, ducking her head.

“Yeah, it did.” I said, inwardly not agreeing.

The month had gone by very slowly for me. Every single day was spent waiting for her.

She shook her head like she was dismissing the topic. “Anyway, how’s your college?”

“Oh, it’s uh… difficult.” I replied.

She smiled. “Must be. But you are a hardworking person, right?”

“Hmm… yeah, well… that depends.”

“On what?” She asked, arching her eyebrows.

“On my mood.” I smiled.

She nodded. “You know, I like your car. When you said you were buying a new one, I didn’t expect a new Ford.”

I chuckled. “Dad wanted me to get a new car. He practically forced me into it.”

My dad owned the car and the four-bedroom apartment in New York. I had felt guilty at first that I was going to raise my baby depending on my father but then again, it was a kind of an arrangement. And I didn’t have that much time to earn money even though I wanted to.

“What about your job?” She asked.

“Oh, yeah. I am a bartender now.” I replied.

“Hey, that’s great. You know, I’m planning on taking a job too.” She said and I just stared at her.

“What?” Alex asked, poking his head between us and frowning at Liz.

“I said I’m going to get a job.” Liz repeated.

“No.” Alex said and then turned to me, “Max, tell her no. She’s pregnant after all.”

“I…” I started but Liz interrupted.

“Alex, please. I’ll only work for sometime.”

“Hell, no. You are not working, Liz. I know that you don’t know how to take care of yourself.”

“Huh? What? I’m not a baby, Dad.”

“Don’t 'dad' me. 'Alex' me!”

“Okay, Alex. Whatever but I’m not gonna listen to you, get it? And who the hell told you I couldn’t take care of myself? Bullshit, Alex.” Liz argued, glaring at him.

“Bullshit, huh? Hey Max, dude.”

“Yeah?” I said.

“You know our Lizzie dear here isn’t eating much. Last night she ate nothing, no breakfast and nothing in the plane either. And if that’s what you call taking care of yourself then that’s bullshit.” Alex said.

“You are not eating?” I frowned at Liz.

“Uh… well, I didn’t feel like.” Liz replied, ducking her head.

“Alex, she’ll eat at home. I have prepared lunch, anyway.” I told him.

“Oh, thank you. And Liz, you better not think about a job right now.”

“Look Uncle Alex, I will take a job. And you can’t stop me.” Liz said.

“Aargh. All right, all right. But don’t complain to me if Maria makes a big deal out of it.” Alex said, sitting back on his seat with his arms folded on his chest.

“Whatever.” Liz mumbled.

The later ten minutes were spent in complete silence. I wanted to say something but backed off when I noticed the tension between the two friends. It was clear that they were both arguing for their own good but who had won it eventually, remained a mystery.

I stopped the car in front of Alex’s uncle’s house.

“Max, you are the man. Thank you.” Alex said, patting my shoulder.

I smiled. “You are welcome.”

He got out of the car without uttering even a single word. After taking his bag from my car, he silently started walking to the front door but stopped when Liz called his name.

“You jerk, couldn’t even say a good bye to me, huh?” Liz said after running to him.

Alex practically threw his bag on the ground and threw his arms around her, hugging her tightly. They remained in the same position for a while, whispering something to each other.

Then Alex put an arm around her shoulder and walked to the car. After Liz settled down in the front seat, he bent down and said, “Take care of her, Max.”

“I will.” I promised.

“You are coming day after tomorrow, right?” Liz asked.

“Yes, sweetie. I am. Just give me a call.”

“Hmm.” Liz said then she kissed his cheek. “Take care, okay?”

“I will.” He smiled. And then soon he walked away.

“You okay?” I asked Liz when I noticed a tear rolling down her cheek.

She quickly wiped it off and smiled at me. “Yes.”

The rest of the ride was spent in very little conversation about my college, my job and our apartment.

When we reached our house, Liz looked very surprised.

“You like it?” I asked her when her jaw hung open.

She turned to me. “Like it? Love it.” She said in an awed tone.

I stepped out of the car and so did she but slowly.

“Max, it… it looks big.” She commented, just staring at it.

I smiled. “Because it is.”

“Hey, let me help you.” She said as I started taking the suitcase.

“No.” I stopped her and she looked annoyed.

“What is it with people? They don’t let me do anything!”

I just looked at her. “We do that for a reason.”

“But I am not like eight month pregnant or something. Three months, Max… that’s all.” She told me.

“Liz, this thing is heavy. I’ll let you do anything you want but not pick up these loaded suitcases.” I said.

She opened her mouth to say something but then turned when somebody called her name.

“Kyle!”
