AN: I finished my psychology essay three hours ago. It’s nearly 5am in the morning, just watched a Clark and Chloe vid and after that what, can I say *shrugs* I felt the need to update this fic, lol.

It’s the first half of Max and Liz’s date, but before that, just wanted to dedicate this next part to:

Begonia9508, AznGurl87, Behrsgirl77, Roswellluver, PhoenixFlamez, BelevnDreamsToo, kittens, Eccentric One, snoopie13, Gigo, Earth2Mama
Smac wrote:Sometimes it's just so nice to read a story that isn't so dramatic and just good fluff. So far we have the fluff, but how long will it stay?Hurry back with the next part.
I didn't set out to write a fluff piece, it sort of just happened. I think my muse wants a break from all the oncoming agnst in my other fics, lol. I want this fic to be simple, not too complicated and definitely not too angsty.

Thanks for all the bumpage guys, enjoy…

P.S. Crash Into Me belongs to Dave Matthews Band

The Good One

Part 6

****

Liz tucked her hair back as they continued to descend down the stairs. “So um, what movie are we going to see?” she asked in what she hoped was a casual tone.

She had gone up and down the stairs that led to her floor many times before, but never had she felt as exhilarated as she did at that moment.

Just being with Max, being on a date with Max, whatever they were doing caused her to smile uncontrollably and frequently. It was something she had heard about, read about, watched in movies and watched other people experience but never her.

And now my heart feels like it’s going to explode, I can’t stop from smiling and I’m loving every minute of it, she thought joyously.

Max paused as they reached the second floor staircase, “Um, I- I um actually didn’t think that far ahead,” he smiled sheepishly.

The sheepish look was absolutely adorable, Liz shook her head in amazement that Max’s embarrassed grin would be targeted at her.

I am on a date with Max Evans and he seems to be as nervous about it as I am. Wonders never cease, she chuckled.

“Um okay…” she began with laughter in her voice. She took a step down and he followed. “How about we just go and see what’s there?” she suggested.

“That sounds like a good idea,” he nodded grinning.

“Yeah, I thought so,” she retorted with a good-natured smile.

The nervous energy was still there, Liz didn’t know if they would have awkward moments of silences or if Max would lose interest in her but she decided to just enjoy it for what it was.

Who knows, maybe after tonight I might realise that it was just a simple crush and I might lose interest. Whatever happens, I’ll always have this tonight.

****

Max couldn’t keep himself from occasionally glancing at the girl in his passenger seat. It was as if he was afraid that she would disappear, that he would wake up and discover that it was all a dream. That Liz Parker wasn’t his date for tonight and that she wasn’t in the passenger seat of his car, shaking her head and humming along to Dave Matthew’s Band‘s Crash Into Me.

Touch your lips just so I know
In your eyes, love, it glows so
I'm bare boned and crazy for you

She’s beautiful! He thought in awe.

He watched her, as eyes closed with a dreamy smile shaping her mouth, she swayed to the music.

Max knew that he stared longer than he should, but the traffic lights were red and he had no control over himself. He had to stare at her because by drowning herself in the music, Liz had shown a little more of herself to him just through a simple unguarded facial expression.

When you come crash into me, baby
And I come into you
In a boys dream
In a boys dream

How could I not have realised beautiful she is, he chided himself. Where the hell having I been?!

It took him a few seconds to realise that she had been facing his direction with closed eyes, but now they were open and a little surprised to find him staring at her.

If I've gone overboard
Then I'm begging you
to forgive me
in my haste

Her face broke out into a self-conscious smile. Max quickly snapped his head in the direction he was supposed to be looking at - the road. The traffic light turned green and they resumed their journey.

When I'm holding you so girl
close to me

You fool, you probably creeped her out, he scolded himself. Not to mention embarrassed the hell out of yourself.

“I get a little carried away when it comes to song I love,” she explained in an embarrassed tone.

Oh and you come crash into me, baby
And I come into you

“You should see me in my room,” he joked. He chanced a quick glance and met her smiling face.

It was okay, it was fine. They were just joking around, talking.
Relax, he coached himself. Just be yourself and it’ll be fine.

“Not a pretty sight?”. Even though he wasn’t looking at her, he heard the laughter and amusement in her voice and he couldn’t help but smile.

“Sometimes a lot of head banging and general crazy dancing,” he retorted.

Hike up your skirt a little more
and show your world to me
In a boys dream..
In a boys dream

****

They pulled into a parking space and Max couldn’t help but be slightly disappointed that their time together in the car was over. It was a foolish thing to feel since their date had just began, but the drive had been fun. He had spent it in the presence of a girl he was beginning to realise he really liked. She was funny, smart, sweet and challenging. She made him nervous and self-conscious but at the same time, he felt as if he was really living.
The air was different, better.
His every sense was heightened.
He was loving every nerve-wracking moment of his night with Liz Parker.

And there’s plenty more to come, he anticipated as they crossed over the road and headed to the cinema.

****

“So what do you want to see?” he asked her.

Liz went over their choices again and bit her lower lip in indecision.

Picking a movie was key, she had vicariously lived through enough of her friends’ dates to know that.

Horror would be the obvious choice because that would guarantee some body to body contact, but however appealing the thought of hiding herself in Max’s chest, Liz wasn’t in the mood for any of the horror films showing. There were a couple of other movies she wanted to see but she didn’t want the stress of making the decision of what movie to watch in case Max found her choices boring.

“Um…” she looked up at him and shrugged carelessly, “whatever you want to watch.”

“I have no idea,” he responded with another sheepish expression.

“You really didn’t think this all the way through did you,” she teased.

“What can I say, Parker. The thought of going out on an actual one on one date with you left me incredibly disorientated.”

“Yeahhh okay.” Liz rolled her eyes in amused disbelief and looked away from him.

“Noo, really,” he countered.

She slowly looked up at him and to her surprise found that his expression was serious and reflected the blatant honesty of his statement.

The intensity and passion she saw in his eyes caused her to inwardly panic.

I have no idea what to say to that, she thought to herself, nobody has ever said that to me before.

Blushing under his scrutiny, Liz couldn’t control the shy, embarrassed side smile which escaped from her lips. She self-consciously tucked a few strands of her hair behind her ears and looked back at the screen of film showing times.

“Um how about, Torque?” she suggested, “It’s got Jay Hernadez, so some eye-candy for me-“

“Should I be offended that you’re on a date with me and yet you’ll be checking out some other guy on screen?“ he asked in hurt tone with dancing eyes.

“Yes you should be very offended,“ she replied in mock seriousness, “but then again there will probably be hot eye candy for you.“

Liz felt herself momentarily stop breathing as he lifted his arm and tucked her hair behind her ear. “You’re the only real life eye candy I need,“ he said.

Liz felt herself blushing and quickly looked away from him.

“Ohh that gets you major points,” she grinned at him, “but um ditto for me too,” she added shyly.

She had just told Max Evans in a roundabout way that she considered him to be her real life eye-candy and to top it all off, he was blushing profusely and had a huge grin on his face.

Just because I gave him a compliment? And he’s acting as if I’m the first person who has ever said that to him. I must definitely be in the twilight zone.

“Major points for you too,” he said.

Liz realised that his mouth was moving but his eyes weren’t looking into hers, they were focused on her lips.

They stood millimetres apart, if she tilted her head up and he lowered his, their lips would meet.

Max Evans could possibly kiss me!

The thought pulled Liz out of her Max Evans induced trance. There was no way in the world that she could kiss Max even if she wanted to.

“The um,” she cleared her throat and held back a smile when his eyes shot up from her lips to her eyes, “other pros of the movie are that there are a lot of stunts and action for you, plus I love action movies anyway and it’s a general fun no-need-to-think-much film.”

“That sounds great,” he replied.

Liz marvelled at the way one minute he made her self-conscious and flustered and the next they were relaxed and just hanging out like friends. It was strange and wonderful and she was enjoying every minute of it.

“Okay then, Torque it is,” she agreed.

A surge of wonderfully stimulating energy shot up from the small of her back to, first the rest of her back and then throughout her body.

They had made a move to join the queue and Max’s hand had come out of nowhere, it was completely unexpected but wholeheartedly enjoyed as he led her along.

Liz almost cried out in disappointment when his hand dropped away. Her back felt naked somehow without his arm there. The fact that her heart also felt the loss of his support suddenly made it starkingly clear that somewhere, during the days she had spent thinking about him, dreaming about him, looking at him and sometimes talking to him, she had developed deep feelings for Max Evans and not only that, she realised that she wanted him to like her as much as she did him.

How screwed am I? She thought despondently.

I knew it. I knew it couldn’t just be a simple date.
I should have said no, that way I’d have saved myself the grief of having a good time tonight and then going back to admiring him from afar, knowing that he doesn’t want me like that.

“Liz is everything okay?”. His voice broke through her gloomy thoughts.

Liz looked up at him, his face was a picture of concern. She had a flash of that concern turning into pity if she told him that she might possibly - no that she was quite sure that she was in love with him and then have him reject her and give that whole I-like-you-better-as-a-friend speech.
Maybe it wouldn’t happen now or tonight but she knew that it wouldn’t be long before that happened, maybe in a week or two.

“I’m fine,” she lied.

Whatever, she thought dejectedly, I’m just gonna enjoy this night, go back to pretending he’s just a friend and rule out the other thing. I don’t want the emotional hassle.

“Are you sure?” he asked. He had felt a sudden shift in her body language. He couldn’t quite pin-point what it was that triggered it yet, but he knew that she was back to being closed off from him again.

“Totally,” she assured him.

Maybe I came on too strong, he thought to himself.

He didn’t plan on placing his hand on the small of her back, but he had spotted a couple of guys checking her out and he had acted on instinct. It was an act which had shocked him too because it made him realise the extent of his feelings for her.

He didn’t want Liz with any other guy but him.

How can I feel strongly for someone I haven’t known for that long let alone built a very close friendship with?

He had felt Liz tense at first but then she had relaxed into him. It had felt right and special but when he had realised what he had done and how inappropriate she might think it was, he had quickly taken his hand away.

That’s when the change with her had happened he realised.

Maybe she thought that I thought that what I did was a mistake?
Maybe she thinks I’m not interested in her but how can she think that because I wouldn’t have asked her out if I wasn’t attracted to her?

The questions were driving him crazy, he wanted to know what she thought of him, he wanted to tell her how he felt about her, but fear of rejection drove him to convince himself that he would get some answers, after the movie.

An atmosphere of awkward tension descended on the pair, it persisted while the tickets, popcorn and drinks were bought, but by the time they entered the screening room, due to reasons neither Max or Liz wanted to analyse, their insecurities and uncertainties were soon forgotten and was once again replaced by their enjoyment of each other’s company.

As you wish

Hi, guys

I'm posting this author's note on all my fics. So here goes:
1] I'm in no way abandoning any of my fics

2] and that's the problem.

Each of my fics are coming to points where they need my utmost concentration and attention. It either gets a little complicated or there's just so much emotion that I want to capture that it's becoming kind of hard to juggle four fics at once.

I don't want to end up rushing parts out or anything like that because that'll take the fun out the worlds I spend my time in, lol. Plus I've started working on another project which adds another fictional world to my ever increasing imagination *shrugs* but what can you do?

So anyway, here's the new plan I'm gonna try out. I'm gonna put all my fics on the backburner except The Promise 'cause that's about to get a lot more complicated and intense and I want to enjoy writing every second of it, plus my muse has been bugging me to write up a new parts. In summary, the plan is: type up two parts to The Promise to post in intervals (Which I plan to have out in about two weeks) and then try and post a weekly update on at least one fic.

That said, who knows what could happen but that's the plan for now. So in essence I plead, don't leave me.

AN: It was a beautiful, hot sunny day and wonderful starlit night tonight, my muse decided to make me finish Max and Liz’s date…

The Good One
Part 7

****

“So what did you think?” asked Liz.

Escorted by a cool breeze and a few late evening stars, they walked along the sidewalk on the way to Pizza Hut. For Liz, the date was going fine. Max was an amazing guy. He was gorgeous and funny, he was someone who made her feel completely comfortable and utterly nervous all at the same time.

And I can still somehow manage to carry a conversation with him, she mused.

“It was good,” he replied, “ The bikes, totally cool.”

He is such a guy, she thought to herself.

“I know,” she agreed, “ I mean Jay Hernandez, fast bikes, great stunts, you can’t go wrong with that“.

She felt Max chuckle beside her.

She slowed down her pace and looked up at him. “What?”.

“Nothing,” he said shaking his head, “ it’s just, I never picked you for the um..”

“liking action and testosterone filled movies type?” she supplied with a smile.

“Yeah,” he laughed.

Liz couldn’t stop her smile from getting wider. It made her happy to make him laugh and smile and at the same time she was constantly surprised at the fact that she could.

“Yeah well, I’m a woman of many interests.”

“Like?” he asked.

“Reading, writing, a variety of genre interests in movies, like gangster; The Godfather trilogy; kick ass action like Kill Bill. I’m a bit of a sci-fi girl, romance, anything with a good story or good action.”

“What do you like to read and write?” he asked..

“Um, let’s see my favourite book, I guess of all time would be “A Tale of Two Cities” by Dickens. I’m not a real big fan of him, but I really like that book.”

“I figured you’d read the classics.”

Right, you probably think I’m some kind of intellectual or nerd. Either way, sorry to disappoint but…

“Well yeah,“ she began, “but I also enjoy your trashy popular novel from time to time. What about you? What’s your favourite book?”.

“Among Us by Edward Hubble,” he replied.

The name sounded familiar, it took a while for Liz to finally remember what it was about and when she did, she took back her thoughts about if Max thought she was an intellectual or nerd. He was into aliens, there was no way she could to top that on a weird interest scale.

“Isn’t that a book about aliens and stuff?” she asked.

“Yeah.”

“Maaax.”

The sing-song nature of her voice caught him off guard. He had expected her to shun his taste in book or make some alien-quack comment, but instead she just said his name.

That was new, so he had no way to prepare for it.

“Yeahhh”, he said mirroring her tone.

They came to a stop at a set of traffic lights. Max glanced at her and found her already looking up at him with a teasing twinkle in her eyes.

“You wouldn’t happen to be an alien in human form would you?”.

“Actually,” he said joining in with the game, “ now that you mention it…”

“Whatever,” she playfully pushed him.

The lights turned red. They crossed road. It had become automatic for him to put his hand protectively on the small of her back. Liz didn’t seem to mind anymore, in fact, every time he did, he caught her smiling.

“I didn’t figure you for an alien buff,” she said.

“It’s an interest, not on the same scale as your Alias obsession,” he teased.

He laughed when she raised her hand in pride.

“Yeah, I’m a fan and proud to be.”

They came to a stop outside the doors of the restaurant.

“Wait,” said Liz, “ I haven’t talked about Alias in front of you, have I?”.

Busted, sang the voice in his head.

“Not to me exactly,” he struggled to explain. He would tell her sometime that he’d gone on a mission interviewing her friends on her likes and dislikes. He would also tell her that Maria had shown him her room before he had asked her out, just so that he could, “feel her personality”, as she put it - but now wasn‘t the time to look like some weird guy who was obsessed with her.

“… just around me and..“ he felt himself blush, “I kind of asked Maria what you’re into.”

“Oh,” she gave him a surprised, confused look, “ I guess you get points for that.”

“Yay me,” he joked.

“Get in there,” she laughed shaking her head.

“Hey,“ he protested. “I think I’m supposed to hold open the door for you to go through. Ladies first remember?”

“You can do it on the way out,” she replied.

Max started at her in bewilderment. The only word he could think to describe Liz at that moment, was, amazing. She said and did things that surprised him…she was…Liz. And that made her amazing.

Denied the opportunity to exhibit chivalry, Max made a note to pull out her chair for her once they got a table.

****

“Are you sure you don’t mind that we’re by the window?” he asked.

“For the last time Max, no”, replied Liz.

While it made her feel special, it also made her laugh to see him to so anxious about making sure everything was perfect.

“I love sitting by the window,” she continued, “ I mean we’re like that cute couple that people walk past or you see talking in movies right at the end.”

“Well when you put it that way,” he grinned.

“Yeah,” she nodded.

Their eyes locked and Liz once again forgot to breathe.

I really need to do something about that, she reminded herself. Passing out was not a thing to do on a first date.

So look away, she coached herself.

Her eyes flew to the menu she held in her hands. “So um, what shall we have?”.

“I don’t know about you but barbeque chicken wings with barbeque sauce for starters sounds great“.

“Oh my gosh yes!,” she agreed. “ Love them. They are so delicious.”

“You really like your food don’t you?” he asked.

“Oh yeah!“, she enthused, “I’m not one of those girls that are afraid to eat in front of guys…”

Liz trailed off when she realised that she had done it again. All through the night, she had kept forgetting that she was on a date and henceforth had ignored some date conversation protocol.

And that’s why he’s looking at me with his jaw open. He probably thinks I’m a pig…but ah well. I’m me and if he doesn’t like that, it’s his loss. But still…

“I‘m sorry was that like too much information?” she asked.

“No!” he replied. “I mean, no,” he added in a softer tone, “ I’m glad ’cause I once dated this girl who just ordered salad for dinner and…”

There’s no need to go detailed, he coached himself.

“… that didn’t work out. Plus it shows that you’re comfortable around me.”

“I am,” she agreed.

“Are you ready to order?” asked their waiter.

Max was glad for the intrusion because it had stopped him from leaning across the table and capturing her lips with his.

With his gaze still fixed on Liz, he opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out.

Going into this he had known that he would have to take it slow, but he’d had no idea what torture it would be .

Thankfully Liz took control of the situation. “Um yeah,” she replied, “we’ll have a plate of barbeque chicken wings with barbeque sauce…”.

With one look, she gave him back his ability to speak.

“…and a large deep pan, stuffed crust pepperoni feast” he finished.

“And to drink?”

“Sprite,” answered Liz.

“Coke,” he answered.

“ Okay, I’ll be back with your drinks shortly,” said their waiter.

It wasn’t till he was a few feet away that conversation resumed on their table.

“Just so you know,” said Liz, “ my limit is six slices, but tonight I’ll push for seven.”

“I’m professionally trained,” he said proudly, “ so I’ll handle the rest.”

“Okayyy,” she said in disbelief.

Max chose not to be offended by her response because, she knew nothing about him, Michael and Kyle’s pizza eating contests. She would have to witness his brilliance before she would believe.

“But just so you know, if you don’t feel up to it, we can always takeaway and I’ll have it in the morning. So in essence, you’d be doing me a favour,” she added.

Max decided to indulge her. “Okay.”

****

In between bites of pizza, details of their lives were discussed.

Brothers, sisters, parents, childhood.

Liz felt comfortable talking about all of them, until the subject of past relationships was broached.

“How many guys have you dated?” asked Max.

None.

“You first,” she said instead.

From living vicariously through her friends’ relationships, she had learnt that past relationships said a lot about current relationships. It would be easier on her heart if she knew what cards Max had before she showed him hers.

“What guys?” he asked with a twinkle in his eye. “None. I don’t swing that way, Liz.”

“Well that’s good to know,” she laughed.

“I’ve had a few short-term relationships and two serious relationships. I broke up with my girlfriend three months ago.”

So far not too bad, she decided. There’s just one more thing.

“How long did you two date?” she asked.

“Two years…”, he replied.

Ouch, long term relationship, not good for me, she thought disappointed.

“We were pretty serious but then…” he continued as the memories played in his mind. Paige had been a great girlfriend. He had actually seen them getting married and sharing a life together.

“…I don’t know, I just woke up one day and felt like I needed something more than we were.”

“Right. She didn’t sleep with you is that it?”.

Max‘s wide eyes flew to her face and found an undecipherable expression. “What?!“, he panicked.

Did she think that he was that kind of guy?

“I mean no!- I mean yes we did have - but I was talking about…” he trailed off helplessly. There was no way anything that he said after that could make him sound any better.

“I guess that answers that question,” she said finally.
Max wasn’t a virgin. She hadn’t realistically expected him to be, but she was still disappointed. The part of their conversation that disappointed her the most, was finding out that he was out of a two year relationship and she was his first date.

That only meant one thing. They could only be friends.

“Why do you do that?” he asked.

“Do what?”.

“Make me feel like I don’t have a chance with you?”.

Liz tucked hair tendrils behind both ears in utter shock.

She made Max feel like he didn’t have a chance with her?

I must be in the twilight zone, she rationalized.

Yet when she looked up, she was met by his distressed expression.

Oh boy…um what to say, she thought to herself. What do you say to someone who says that to you?

“You- um…I was just- why did you ask me out?” she asked finally.

“You’re serious?” he asked.

Was it not obvious to her?

“Uh huh” she replied.

“Well um, because you’re smart and funny and beautiful, fun to talk to when I get the chance,” he added. “You’re a person that I really like and would like to get to know a lot better…“

There’s honesty for you, he added silently.
He had put himself out there and waited anxiously for a response. Of which none came. Instead of trying to rescue what he had left of his ego, Max decided to push for more.

“What about me?” he asked, “Why did you say yes?”.

“I guess, for the same reasons you asked. As long as we switch the beautiful to handsome,” she added.

“Done,” he grinned.

Liz Parker thought he was handsome. If this was a dream, he didn’t ever want to wake up.

“So you never answered my question,” he said.

“Which was?”.

“How many boyfriends have you had?”.

Oh that one.

“Ohh, umm…”

“That many huh?” he joked.

Although it was a joke, Liz could see the uncertainty etched in his face. Since there was no way they were going to go beyond friendship now, she could be honest with him about that one thing.

“No not that many. This is…um pretty embarrassing to admit,” she said staring intently at the table, “ but I’ve never really had a boyfriend.”

“Are you kidding?!”

“Pathetic I know-”

“No.“ The passion in his voice drew her eyes back to his face which softened as he smiled. “It’s just surprising. I mean you’re stunning.”

Crimsoned cheeked, Liz glanced at the food in her hand and then back at him. “You say this as I stuff myself with pizza,” she noted, “ you are definitely not shallow”.

“Thanks. I just don’t understand how any guy can not ask you out”.

Simple, the guys I liked didn’t like me back, she retorted silently.

“I went out on blind dates with friends but they were one off things,“ she explained. “So I have a lot of guy friends, especially ‘cause I helped them either get with or get over my friends, but I never really had a relationship. But that hasn’t been a bad thing because I know what I want now and I can tell if a guy is my type a mile away.”

His eyes clouded over and sparked with an intensity that made Liz grateful that she was sitting and not standing.

“So am I your type?” he asked finally.

After you date someone else maybe.

“It looks promising,” she answered.

****

“I’m pretty sure that my official limit is six slices of pizza. That seventh one was pushing it. I can‘t believe you had the rest.” said Liz as they headed back towards the car.

“It’s all about building up a tolerance,” grinned Max proudly.

“You could have finished it all you know,” she said.

The rest of their dinner had passed in pleasant banter and talk although Max had noticed a shift in her attitude towards him again. He couldn’t figure out what it was, but there was something that made him think that he would have to work really hard to convince her that he was boyfriend material.

There was one thing he wanted to know by the end of the night though. It was something that had intrigued him ever since they had talked about her past relationships or lack there of.

Glancing down at the brown haired beauty beside him, Max wondered if she had ever been kissed and if not, then maybe, she would let him have the honour of being her first.

“Yeah, but I’d rather you have a few for breakfast, because,“ he adopted a scientific tone, “as we know it is the best way to start off the day.”

“I totally agree.”

****

They walked in companionable silence until they reached the car.

Liz was about to open the door and get into her seat when she felt Max behind her. She turned and found herself staring into his dark eyes. He was leaning his hand against the car for support, but it also pinned her in. To make things worse, he was lowering his head closer and closer to hers and making her very breathless.

“Liz?”. His voice was low and as soft as a butterfly kiss.

“Huh?” she managed.

“Have you ever been kissed?”.

Are you going to kiss me? she felt like asking. But nervous fear overcame her and she opted to go on the offensive instead.

“Ummm, I don’t kiss on a first date Mr Evans”, she smiled.

“How about a second?”.

If she stood on tip-toes, their lips would touch.

And that cannot happen!! she reminded herself.

“Nope,” she shook her head to rid herself of the Max-Evans fog. “The closest you’ll get is a peck on the cheek.” At which point she stood on tip toe and kissed lightly him on the cheek. “Like that.”

Max watched her slide into her seat in awe.
Liz Parker had kissed him!
Even if it was just on his cheek. Her lips had made contact with his skin and it had been electrifying.

If I feel like that from a kiss on the cheek, what will full blown, kissing be like? he wondered.

“Max?“.

Her voice drew him out of his thoughts.

“Will be driving anytime soon?” she asked.

“Um, yeah sure.”

****

When the engine died down, Max turned to find Liz already opening the door to leave.

Sighing with disappointment, he followed her out. He debated on whether he should tell her that he didn’t want the night to end. Eventually he decided against it because she would have probably heard that line before, only this time, it wasn’t a line. He meant it with all his heart.

He opened the door to their dorms and followed behind her.

They stopped by the staircase. She turned to face him.

“I guess this is where we say goodnight,” she said.

“Why?” he asked.

Why indeed? she asked herself. But she knew the reason. The fact that they were now holding hands was reason enough, but if Max walked her up, she would officially fall for him and the couldn’t happen.

“Because you’re on the ground floor and I’m on the third, so we drop you off first,” she replied.

“Is it your plan to just destroy my attempts at chivalry?”.

“Maybe.”

“What if I said that I left a book up in your room and I need to come up with you to get it?,” he asked playfully.

Liz dropped her hands from his and stepped onto the first step.

“Goodnight Max, I had a great time.”

She turned to resume her journey but he held her arm to stop her.

“Liz?” he asked looking up at her.

“Yeah?”.

“Have you been kissed before, fully on the lips?”.

Liz couldn‘t stop the wide embarrassed smile that swept across her mouth. “That, Mr Evans,” she said teasingly, “is none of your business.”

“Should I take that as a no?” he asked mischievously.

“You can take it as a goodnight Max,” she smiled.

“Goodnight Liz,” he breathed.

Willing her knees not to give out at the sound of the way he said her name, Liz turned and slowly walked up the stairs, all the while aware of his eyes on her.

“Are you going to watch me go all the way up?” she asked without turning around or stopping.

“Since I can’t walk you there, this is the next best thing,” he called.

“I hope you’re not checking out my ass,” she joked.

When no reply came, Liz stopped and looked back at his grinning face.

Blushing, she looked away from him.

Max Evans is checking out my ass! she inwardly screamed.

“Yeah, goodnight, Max,” she said before running up the stairs and feeling very much like a giddy high-school girl.

****

Max strolled into his dorm to find Michael watching t.v. on the sofa.

“How did it go?” he asked.

“Good.”

Michael looked up at him. “Details.?”

“You never went in full blown with what you and Maria did,” said Max.
For tonight, he didn’t want to talk. He just wanted to replay the night in his head and go to sleep dreaming about Liz.

“I told you we kissed,” he protested.

“We kissed,” he offered.

“Where?” asked Michael cheekily.

“On the cheek,” he said proudly.

“You’re kidding right?! A kiss on the cheek?! Have I taught you nothing?”

“Goodnight Michael” he called before heading into his room.

Deciding to give him a bone, Max leaned his head out of his room.

“I will say this, if anyone had told me that Pizza Hut pizza had orgasmic effects on women, I wouldn’t have believed them. Until I watched Liz eat a slice of pizza tonight.”

“Now that’s the kind of stuff I like to hear!” he applauded.

Goodnight Michael,” he sang closing the door behind him.

****

“Welllll?” asked Isabel.

“How did it go?” asked Maria.

The moment she had stepped inside the door, they had pounced on her and dragged her to the sofa.

“We had a great time,” she replied.

“Step by step please?” demanded Tess.

Liz sighed. She really didn‘t want to talk about her date tonight, but she knew that she had to give them something.
“Cinema to see Torque, it was good. Pizza Hut, we talked about anything and everything. He had a girlfriend for a two years, they broke up three months ago. He hasn’t dated since, so…”

“You think you’re his rebound,” finished Maria.

“Two years,” she told her. “I know the rules Maria. I’m not a rebound type of girl but,“ she shrugged, “we had a good time.”

“Did you kiss?” asked Isabel.

“If we did, that would officially make me his rebound, so no”, she replied. “I had a good time and that’s it.”

She wished that it could be more, but she had seen it all before. People just coming out of a long term relationship always had a rebound or causal fling and she was looking for neither.

Unfortunately Max is, so we can’t be anything but friends.

“Are you gonna see him again?” asked Tess.

“He didn’t ask,” she replied.

“And if he does?” asked Maria.

“I’ll say yes and go out with him, but keep it strictly platonic. No kissing.”

“Liz, have you talked to him about it?” asked Maria.

“There’s a thing called denial, Maria,” Liz replied. “ I’ve seen it with my friends enough times. Max is a great guy and I have fun hanging with him, so we’ll do that if he asks me out again,” she shrugged her shoulders in disappointment. “We‘ll just…hang.”

“Liz, you know that’s kind of screwed up right?” asked Maria.

Maria didn’t think that Max would treat Liz as a rebound but the facts were laid out on the table. Max hadn’t had a rebound so he could be using Liz without him consciously knowing it.

“Yeah,” she replied getting up to leave, “but that‘s the way it goes. Goodnight guys.”

“ ‘Nite” the chorused.

As soon as her bedroom door closed, Tess, Isabel and Maria looked at each other.

“Do you really think she’s a rebound?” asked Tess.

“No,” replied Isabel, “but..two years, three months, no date. Maybe he is on some level.”

“Should we ask?” asked Tess.

“I think, we should leave it for now,” said Maria, “I mean, she isn’t blind to the fact that he could be rebounding and she is gonna keep it platonic, so let’s see what happens.”

And let’s hope that we’re all wrong, she added silently because it was obvious to her that Liz had deep feelings for Max and if she really was just a rebound, she would be crushed.

Why Liz is the way she is is explained a little in my AN but more will be revealed in later parts. All I can say to explain her behaviour for now is, when she falls for someone, she really falls, which could be a bit of a problem…

BelevnDreamsToo - loving your avatar too. What can I say, it’s Jason, so yummy

A little note about this next part. First off, the question of whether Liz is Max’s rebound will not be answered in this next part but will start to be answered in the next part where we’ll get Max’s POV.
Secondly, I know it seems a bit rushed or like everything has happened really fast or that Liz’s reasoning is basically really screwed up and confused. In some of this part you might be going “ what the hell is thinking?”, lol but it’ll all make sense later because to Liz it’s very clear. Her world is black and white not grey, but it will get very grey later on  but for now, here’s the next part…

The Good One - Part 8

“I’m just headed to Starbucks for a coffee, do you guys wanna join me?” he asked.

Both girls looked at him, at each other in shock and back at him in confusion.

“I would love to,” began Jane.

Liz met her friend’s gaze and with wide eyes.

Like hell you would, she insisted with a panicked expression. She saw the dancing laughter in her eyes and her small mischievous smile.

She wouldn‘t.

“but…”

She would.

Jane was going to leave her here with Drew. Drew Gilmore. Gorgeous Drew Gilmore who she had been checking out in her lecture since the semester began.

“…I’ve got a media lecture to get to but um…”

Liz watched frozen as her soon to be ex friend backed away from them.

“…you guys should go!” she shouted. “I’ll see you later!,” she waved and with that, Liz was left alone with her black haired Adonis. As she looked after her friend’s retreating figure, Liz vowed to make her pay for putting her in a situation like this.

Drew Gilmore was the type of guy who she liked but who wasn’t interested in her “like that”. So, just as she had done with Max, she had decided to admire him from afar. He had become her obsession, or obsie, as she liked to it until Max, her other obsie had asked her out. Drew had then been put into the back of her mind in the nano-second that being with Max had seemed like an actual possibility.

But now that it isn’t…

She slowly turned and looked up at the boy in front of her. She took in his loose fitting blue t-shirt that tugged at the muscles she knew where under there, she took in his angular jaw, his kissable lips, spiky jet black hair and startling blue eyes. She took all this in and in response, swallowed a huge nervous gulp.

He is fit as and standing in front of me. I should really say something.

After she decided that he must have been interested in Jane and not her and after getting over the disappointment of that realisation, she could only tuck her hair behind her ears and give a nervous awkward laugh.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to,” he said shrugging.

Mesmerized by his movements and his silky yet masculine voice, Liz felt her jaw drop and made no attempt to close it.

“… I won’t hold a grudge, I promise,” he smiled.

Two weeks ago, she would have declined his offer because the part of her that had been holding on to the hope that she wasn’t a rebound had existed, but after finding pictures of Max’s ex-girlfriend in his underwear drawer and in his bedside table drawer, she had accepted the truth.

After a total of four “dates” with him, there had been no kisses, just comfortable banter, a couple of heart racing incidents and a couple of butterflies in her stomach which she had managed to bring under control - she had kept to her word and kept it platonic. They went out, had a good, that was it. She was on one’s rebound. She was still free and single.

Which is why, she reasoned, when the guy you’ve had a thing for since you laid eyes on him in class asks you out for coffee, you don’t say no.

“I’m not a coffee person,” she said with more confidence than she felt.

“Oh,” he said in a tone which sounded like disappointment but, she reasoned, it couldn’t have been.

“But I love the hot-chocolates and frappacinos,” she added.

“Is that a yes?” he asked with a smile that made her knees feel like jelly.

“It is,” she answered.

****
Three hours, 2 frappacinos and one hot chocolate with cake later, Drew Gilmore was turning out to be everything that Liz thought he would be and more.

He was funny, intelligent and definitely her type, which was why she was still waiting for the moment where he would tell her the real reason he had asked her out for coffee.

Maybe it was because he liked Jane and he was just being nice. Then again he had already given her an out and when she hadn’t taken it, he had seemed glad.

Brushing away her thoughts with a smile, Liz decided to just go with the flow. She was talking to a guy she liked and having a really good time doing it and that’s as far as it went for now.

They had talked about university life, classes, where they were staying, their friends and included in that were likes, dislikes and jokes. While they had been sitting at their table, Liz had also discovered that Drew was quite popular.

People were always stopping by their table to talk to him, he was a complete gentleman, he took every opportunity to introduce her but what constantly surprised her was the fact that to his friends, the ones he was really close to, when he did introduce her, a look of recognition would pass over their faces, they would smile at her and then leave very shortly after. It left her very mystified and when she questioned him about it, he would blush slightly, laugh it off and change the subject; not that she minded, but whatever it was, she reasoned, it probably wasn’t bad.

****

“Hey guys”.

The amused female voice startled them.

While Liz looked at the two people standing in front of them with interest, Drew wanted to kill them because what couldn’t see was the teasing, mischievous looks he knew all too well.

“Heyyy,” he greeted them with clenched teeth.

What he hoped that they were getting from his fixed stares was: mess this up and I’ll kill you.

When their smiles grew wider, he knew that his message was loud and clear.

“Forgot we were meeting up?” asked Alyssa as they sat on the remaining chairs around the table.

“Yeah, kinda,” he replied sheepishly.

He hadn’t expected to be talking to Liz for as long as he had. He hadn’t expected to get her alone full stop. He had watched her from afar, asked around about her and thought about what she was like and then after weeks of planning, contemplation and support from his friends, he had finally got the courage to ask out Liz Parker for coffee and she had agreed.
Being with her, talking with her, was far better than he had imagined.

“Aren’t you going to introduce us?” asked James with a playful wink.

“Uh yeah, Liz, this Alyssa and James. Guys, Liz.”

“Ah, so you’re Liz,” began James and that’s where he ended because Drew swiftly and pointed kicked his foot under the table.

Liz obviously noticed because she shot him a puzzled look and seemed like she was going to ask him about it when to his relief, Alyssa saved him.

“Hey, you’re in my myth and romance class for English aren’t you?” she asked suddenly.

“Yeah,” replied Liz, “I thought you looked familiar.”

“Don’t you just love it?” she asked.

“Yeah, Professor Brown is so funny.”

“And cute, that is one class I do not miss.”

As they talked, Drew sat back and took time out to study Liz. He liked the way she talked, the way her lips moved, the way she tucked her hair behind her ears. Everything about her was endearing.

“Speaking of class,” interrupted James as he rose up from the table. “We’re just gonna grab a drink and then we can go.”

Right class, the reason I’m here, he thought. He wanted nothing more than to sit and talk to Liz all day but that wasn’t an option.

“I’ve got class,” he explained to her. “ I just didn’t expect us to be sitting here for this long,” he added sheepishly.

“Neither did I,” she grinned.

Alyssa couldn’t help but smile as she watched her friend interact with his crush. On first impressions, she approved of her friend’s choice. Liz was not only pretty and smart but had a nice personality which would work well with Drew’s.

When their was a lull in their conversation, she decided to help her out her friend because otherwise, it would take him another two weeks to ask her out.

“We’re going bowling at the weekend, you should come,” she suggested innocently avoiding Drew‘s gaze.

Granted it wasn’t a one on one date, but it was a step in the right direction.

“Lyssa, we just met. I don’t think Liz would be comfortable with that,” he said.

Oh my gosh, I gave you an opening, take it, she by applying pressure on his foot.

She waved away his argument. “So bring a friend, plus you can get to know each other better. Liz?” she asked.

The longer it took her to reply, the tenser Drew beside her got. Alyssa prayed that Liz would agree, otherwise, she wasn’t looking forward to facing Drew’s wrath.

“Sure,” she said finally.

She couldn’t believe it when the word left her mouth.
She, Liz Parker, had just agreed to go out bowling with Drew Gilmore and his friends.
Wonders never ceased.

“Okay,“ Alyssa, clapped her hands joyfully just as James brought back their orders. “So ask for her number so we can get going already.”

James shot her a warning look. “Lyssa.”

“What?” she asked innocently, “I’m just helping him along.”

Liz couldn’t hold back her amused and embarrassed laugh. There was something about Alyssa that reminded her of Maria.

“Yeah well you can stop now,“ said James. Grabbing his books and Alyssa with him, he headed towards the door. “We’ll see you guys outside. Nice meeting you Liz.”

“You too,” she nodded with a smile.

She watched as the comedic pair made their way out of the Café before returning her attention to a very ashamed Drew.

“In case you didn’t notice I’m incredibly embarrassed right now.”

She laughed as she attempted to capture his gaze.

He is so sweet.

“Don’t worry about it, you should meet my friends,” she consoled him.

He finally met her gaze.

“You don’t have to come bowling if you don’t want to.”

“No, it should be fun,” she responded. “ I’d love to.”

“Cool…and the friend you’re bringing, is it a female or male friend?”.

“Probably one of my girl friends, why?” she asked laughingly.

“No reason.”

He asked for her number and she gave it to him.

At the door, she said goodbye to Alyssa and James and slowly made her way home musing over the delightful surprise the day had brought.

****

“Izzy, I need a favour,” she said.

As soon as she had arrived home, she had gone in search of a girl friend for bowling. Since Tess was in a lecture, Isabel was her next best bet and she had found her painting her nails in her room.

She paused to admire her handy work before speaking. “Go on.”

“Well, this guy I’ve been crushing on since the semester began, asked me-well his friend did, but-the point is, they asked me to go bowling with them this weekend and I need a gal pal,” she explained.

“Wait, aren’t you kind of, sort of going out with Max?” asked Isabel.

Liz slumped onto her bed and with a tired sigh retold the tale of the incident that established her and Max’s relationship.

“I found pictures of his ex in his sock drawer and bedside drawer when I was snooping around his room“. Noting Isabel’s raised eyebrow she added, “He said I could look around and I was curious, so sue me. Anyway,“ she continued, “he’s not over her and I’m no-ones rebound.”

“Yeah but Liz, he seems to really like you, I mean you’ve been on a couple of dates and you’ve given him nothing physically and he’s still around,” she objected.

Pictures, Isabel,” she reminded her.

“True,” she conceded.

“So will you come with?” asked eagerly.

“Sure,” relented Isabel. “Who is this guy anyway?”

“Drew Gilmore,” she replied.

“Oh Drew”, she said with delighted recognition.

“You know him?” asked Liz. He really seemed to get around.

“I’ve spoken to him a couple of times,” replied Isabel. “ He’s a fox and seems likes a nice guy”.

“Glad to see you approve”.

“Not that I’m not flattered but why didn’t you ask Maria?” she asked.

“Because she’ll freak out and start talking about me and Max when there is no me and Max.”

Isabel stared at her in disbelief before asking the question which had been plaguing her all week.

“Liz, are you sure you know what you’re doing? with Max I mean.”

“Positive,” she assured her.

****

“Liz, I can’t keep doing this with Max!.”

That was Maria’s entrance into her room. No knock, just a swing of the door and she was straight into the conversation they had been having for the past week and a half.

Liz, who had been lying on her bed reading, looked up from her book. “Doing what?” she asked calmly.

“He keeps asking me if you’re interested in him and if he’s doing anything wrong because he’s not quite sure where he stands with you,” she answered before taking a deep breath.

With a tired sigh, Liz put her book aside and fixed her attention on her very high strung friend.

“What did you tell him?” she asked.

“That you like him and want to take things slow to get to know him better,” she replied.

“I do,” she answered.

Maria fixed her with the pointed look of disbelief which she had gotten used to.
“Liz.”

“Maria,” she retorted.

She crossed the room and settled onto her bed. “Max, is my friend too and he seems to be really interested in you and it’s not fair for him to think he has a chance with you when you’ve completely written him off.”

Liz sighed. As far as she was concerned there was nothing else about her situation with Max that needed to be talked about, but apparently everyone else thought otherwise.

“I told you about the pictures of his ex I found.”

“I know you did and-why don’t you just tell him that he might be rebounding on you and stop the whole date thing?” asked an exasperated Maria.
She was tired of hearing the hopeful tone in her friend’s voice when he talked about Liz. She was tired of giving him advice when she knew none of it would work. Most of all, she was tired of the mental game Liz seemed to be engaged in. What she was doing made no sense to her, she knew that Liz had emotional issues when it came to the opposite sex but this was just something else. It was almost like denial on her part to the greatest extreme.

“Because I like spending time with him and if I said that about the rebound thing, it totally get awkward and I don’t want that. Trust me Maria,“ she pleaded, “eventually he’ll find someone else to rebound with and our friendship will still be fine without any awkwardness. It’ll work itself out.”

“I don’t want him to get hurt,” she told her.

Liz felt like rolling her eyes but knew that it wouldn’t help the situation. Why would Max of all people get hurt? He didn’t have those kind of feelings for her, that was the beauty of their relationship, it was comfortable and free of anyone getting their feelings hurt.

“He won’t because we’re not like that okay?” she insisted.

“Fine,“ relented Maria. “I just hope you know what you’re doing.”

I do,” she insisted.

Why do people keep telling me that as if this could end up bad? She questioned. The only way it could have ended badly was if I had fallen for him but I’ve taken care of that so it shouldn’t be a problem.
Everything should work out just fine.

The Good One – Part 9

"Iz, you ready to go?!" shouted Liz.

It had taken her an hour to get ready, it seemed to be taking Isabel two and yet she was the one who didn't have any vested interest in the happenings of the night.

"Five minutes!" came the reply.

Liz anxiously glanced at her wrist watch. They were going to be at least fifteen minutes late!

It's not like it's a date, she reminded herself. It was just a couple of people convening to get to know each other better.

Then how come I'm slightly nervous? she countered.

The answer to that, was obvious. She had been spending time with Drew all week. During the classes she had with him, he had sat with her. His close proximity had made it difficult to focus on her lectures because she kept casting sideways glances in his direction.
They had gone out for lunch, spent time at his dorm hung and had taken not to phoning each other but texting short messages to each other. He would text her a comment, an observation, a thought, trivial or funny and she did the same. There had been a mutual agreement that neither expect each other to reply unless it was required. It was just enough for them that they were passed their thoughts along.

The more time she spent alone with him, the more she liked him and tonight, she would be spending time with his friends and if she liked what she saw, she had a distinct frightening feeling that she'd be one step closer to falling for him. That idea terrified her. If he didn't return the sentiments, then she'd be crushed and have to revert back to the friend-harboring-non-platonic desires, a role she was all too familiar with.

"Ready."

Isabel's entrance jolted her out of her thoughts.

"Great, let's go."

She swung the door open and nearly collided with a laughing Maria and Max.

Why me? she inwardly groaned. Obviously a fast undetected getaway was too much to ask for.

"Whoa, where's the fire?" asked Maria.

"Hey," she said brightly.

Maria narrowed her eyes at her while Liz maintained her look of innocence.

"You guys off anywhere special?" she asked.

"Just bowling with some friends," Liz answered casually.

"How come you didn't tell me?" asked Max.

The tone of his voice and the fleeting emotion she had witnessed in his expression made her feel slightly guilty, as she if she was cheating on him.

When we're not even together.

"I wasn't aware I had to tell you about my every movement," she snapped. It felt like she was being interrogated.

"You don't," he retorted. "It's just...I had a surprise planned."

The guilt overpowered her for a moment before she was back in control. Standing there talking to Max just wasn't healthy for her, not tonight.

"Sorry I ruined your plans, but maybe you can surprise me some other time." She grabbed Isabel's hand and slipped past them. "We gotta go. See you later."

"That was kind of rude," said Isabel beside her.

"I'll apologize later."

"He looked disappointed," she continued.

Was everything geared to guilt trip her tonight?

She stopped midway down the second flight of stairs and turned to face Isabel.

"And that's my fault because I what?...have a life?!".

Isabel flinched. "That's a bit harsh."

Liz sighed and rang her fingers through her hair. Isabel was right, she was being harsh and just out of order but that was the only way to control the jumbled feelings within her.

"I'm a little rushed and nervous," she apologized.

Accepting the apology with a nod, they continued their descent down the stairs.

"You like him don't you?" asked Isabel.

"Max?".

"No Drew, but it's interesting that Max's name came up first," she teased.

"I like Drew a lot," she responded ignoring her reference to Max. "Whether I have a chance with him is another issue".

"Trust me, you stand a huge chance."

A rueful smile passed across her lips. None of them understood, how could they when they had never consistently been through what she had?

"That's not what past experience tells me."

"Liz, don't let your past determine your future. Incase you haven't noticed, you're beautiful and he'd have to be an idiot to not get together with one of the best girls I know."

"You say that because you're my friend Iz, total bias."

Isabel gripped her arm and halted them to a stop. She hated the fact that Liz had such low self-esteem about herself when it was completely unfounded.

"I say that because it's the truth and it's high time you started believing it or so help me God, I will beat it into you."

"Friendship abuse?" Liz mused.

"If it gets the job done."

****

Max sat dejectedly on the sofa. He'd had a completely romantic night planned for him and Liz, but obviously that wasn't going to happen. And to top it off, their conversation hadn't ended on the best of terms.

"You're not pushing hard enough," Maria critiqued him.

"In what way?" he asked.
Liz was frustrating.
They went out to the movies, to dinner, they held and linked arms, they wrestled playfully, they danced, they had chemistry. He felt it and at times he knew that she did too. Yet she continued to deny it, to pretend that they were just friends. Friends who went out on dates and flirted with each other.
They had almost kissed on numerous occasions and everytime, she had been the one to take a step back. Everytime he thought he'd made progress with her, she'd suddenly change and he wouldn't be able to reach her anymore.

"We're more than just friends but not quite lovers. I know that and I'm fine with it, but she'll only admit to us being friends, but I know she likes me and I like her, so what is the problem?" he agonized.

"Liz has never had a proper boyfriend before and is looking for something long term. She knows what she wants, has trust issues, low self-esteem and feels undeserving of your affection. She won't give her heart away quickly plus she is the master of denial and suppressing her emotions. It's a defense mechanism and that's just an overview," finished Maria.

He shot her a you're-not-helping glare. "Thanks Doctor Deluca."

"Do you want the good Doctor's help or not?" she asked.

Max sighed in acceptance, he needed all the help he could get. "Hit me with your wisdom."

Drew couldn't hold back his absolute delight and relief that Liz had finally arrived. His fingers had been ready to dial in the first ten minutes of her absence. In the half an hour before she and Isabel had arrived, his friends had had to confiscate his cell to keep him from, as Alyssa put it, showing his desperation.

Finally they had arrived and all was right with his world apart from the Jim problem. Drew knew that Isabel was dating someone, so he had asked his friend Jim to come along thinking that since they were both attached, they could bond over relationship stuff. Unfortunately, Jim had failed to tell him that he was single again, so Isabel could possibly be a third wheel as the rest of his friends were in couples.
Isabel was gorgeous, but Drew only had eyes for Liz. She wore minimal make-up, her hair out, dressed in casual jeans and a top but that was all it took. If tonight went well, then he'd put himself on the line and have the talk with her next week.

Bowling had been everything Liz had hoped it would be. After a few awkward moments, she had settled around Drew and they had proceeded to have a good time. His friends were welcoming and fun to be around. She had been slightly worried about Isabel and Jim but after she had pulled Drew aside and questioned him about his plans for them, she became more relaxed. Jim and Isabel hit off well and were always together throughout the night.

By the end of the evening, the verdict was crystal clear.
She liked Drew.
A lot.
Which was why when he had offered to walk them home, she had refused. She needed distance to bring her heart back to ground zero and be realistic. She liked him, but didn't mean he liked her more than a friend. She needed to regain that indifference again, the one she had with Max. It kept her heart safe.

"Have a good time?".

Liz was surprised to find Max still at her apartment. It was past one a.m.

"Yeah, after bowling, we went out for drinks and Iz got a proposal," she smiled. She hung up her coat and joined him and Maria on the sofa.

"What would Alex say," teased Max.

"From who?" asked Maria.

"Jim Yardley," replied Isabel.

"He's cute and now single," supplied Maria.

Isabel grinned. Tonight had been more fun than she had expected. "He told me that if ever I broke it off with Alex, to have him on standby even as a rebound or possibly for marriage."

"That was sweet," said Maria.

"Especially when he got down on one knee and proposed with an onion ring," quipped Liz.

"You're kidding!," said Max.

"Nope," she laughed. "So what have you two been up to?" she asked curious.

It wasn't that there was anything wrong with Max and Maria spending a Saturday night together, it was just...there was something not quite right about the current situation.

"Working on your surprise," replied Maria.

"My wha-oh," full realization dawned on her and suddenly it all made sense. "That's why you rang me earlier to see how far we were from home?".

They both nodded and rose up from sofa.

"Come with us," said Maria.

Brimming with curiosity, Liz followed them to her room, stepped in and was momentarily rendered speechless.

"Wha-"

A warm soft breath caressed her ear. "Surprise," he whispered.

"Why did you do this?" she asked looking around her room in wonderment. It was bathed in warm candle light, white roses and soft music.

"We'll leave you two alone," she heard Maria say and nodded her head in response.
She couldn't take her eyes away from the beauty of her room.

"You always say how pumped up and restless you are after a night out late and how you just want to relax like this," he explained, "so I changed tonight's surprise to this."

Her look of wonderment was now directed at him. "Max, this is amazing."

He could feel his cheeks warming up. "Maria helped too," he added.

Slow dancing on the boulevard
In the quiet moments while the city’s still dark

"I'll have thank her...", her words trailed off as she recognized the song playing. The Difference by Matchbox Twenty. "My favorite song...dance with me?" she asked swaying to the enchanting notes.

Sleepwalking through the summer rain and the tired spaces
You could hear her name when she was warm and tender

More than anything, he answered silently.
Maria had advised him to "hit her with the little things". So far he had wined and dined her on official dates, which were all well and good, but the way to win Liz's heart was with the little things that mattered to her and that was what he was going to do.

And you held her arms around you
There was nothing but her love and affection
She was crazy for you
Now she's part of something that you lost

"I'd love to, but I can't," he answered. He couldn't just dance with her, not tonight, not when she looked at him like that.
If he danced with her, he would kiss her. He would tell her things that she wasn't ready for and that he couldn't take back.

"I've got an early morning tomorrow," he added.

And for all you know
This could be
The difference between what you need
And what you wanna be
Yeah, what you wanna be

"Tomorrow's Saturday, you sleep in," she stated.
She took a step towards him, minimizing the space between them.

Please don't, he pleaded silently. I can't be near you right now.

Night swimming in her diamond dress
Making small circles move across the surface
Stand watching from the steady shore

Bathed in candle light, she was breathtaking.

"Not tomorrow, I have things to do," he explained.

"A three minute song Max," she teased with a smile.

He wasn't ready to tell her, not yet. "I'm tired and it's late. I just wanted to be here for your reaction."

Feeling wide open and waiting for
Something warm and tender
Now she's moving further from you
There was nothing that could make it easy on you

"I hope I didn't disappoint."

Every step you take reminds you that she's walking wrong

"You didn't."

She took his hand in hers. Max didn't dare meet her eyes. "Max, thank you. This means a lot. I feel like I should repay you somehow."

Every word you never said
Echoes down your empty hallway
And everything that was your world
Just came down

"This is thanks enough," he mumbled.

"Well, how about this..."
She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him deeply and thoroughly.

Day breaking on the boulevard
Feel the sun warming up your second hand heart
Light swimming right across your face

Liz blinked.
Whoa, where did that image come from? Fantasies about kissing Max were a normal occurrence but this was the first time that she had come close to acting it out as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

And you think maybe someday, yeah
Maybe someday

She leaned in and placed a soft kiss on his cheek and stepped back.

Space. She needed a lot of space tonight.

For all you know
Yeah, this could be

"That was..." Max finally met her eyes.

I think I love you.

"...good night Liz."

The difference between what you need
And what you want

"Night Max."

Even after he left closing her door behind him, Liz had continued to stare after him.
He had come dangerously close to breaking her.
She looked around her room dazed, delighted and overwhelmed by the strong emotion evident in his gesture. It was blatant and everywhere she looked. It warmed her heart, brought tears to her eyes and she had no idea what to do about it except enjoy this one piece of fairytale magic.

"Liz."

"Maria."

"That was soo not a rebound gesture."

Liz groaned in her cup of cinnamon herbal tea. Following on from her perfect night, her morning had began so well but Maria was just about to ruin it.

"It was a sweet friendshi-"

"Don't even," Maria warned.

She could predict what Liz was about to say, what denial speech she was going to throw at her and frankly she was tired of it.

"I don't know what you want me to say."

Maria gritted her teeth in restraint before finally bursting.
"I want you to talk to him and ask him outright if he's using you as a rebound 'cuz if he is, it's not fair on you and if he isn't, it's not fair on him because he's putting himself out there for you and you just don't care! ".

"Of course I care," Liz objected. Max meant a lot to her, that was why she was doing all this. " I don't wanna hurt Max, that's why I haven't said anything. We're both having a good time, no one is hurt."

Why could no one understand that?!

Maria felt like shaking her friend until sense entered her brain. "You're either clueless or really really self centered and selfish!"

"I like Max!", Liz repeated heatedly, "I like spending time with him. I like our relationship because I'm not his girlfriend, yet we go out. Our relationship is undefined and there lies its beauty. We do couple stuff, but we're not a couple. There's no pressure."

"Pressure on who?" she asked. This was a new record to played in the Max denial game.

"Me," answered Liz. "I like Max. I never thought he'd like me back – which he does but it's because of his rebound – so no pressure on me to be all perfect and in his league."

Maria sighed disappointed. "Please tell me you still don't feel worthy of him."

"I like the unattainable guys. If they like me it'll only be for a little while till someone better catches their eye and then I become the friend. That's the way it goes," she explained. " I give Max a week before he goes and finds someone willing to give it up to him."

"You have really warped logic you know that?".

"But it works. Give it a week, you'll see and if it doesn't happen, then I promise you I'll have it out with him."

"I'm going back to bed." Maria rubbed her temples tiredly. No matter how many times they had this conversation, it ended the same way, with no change in Liz. It felt like she was going around in circles, but at least now, she had a time frame to deal with.
A week.
In a week, this mess would be sorted somehow.
