Title: Someone's Watching Over Me
Author: Kim Mayer
Rating: TEEN-MATURE
Pairing: Liz-centric; with little M/T, Mi/L, Maria, Kyle and Isabel by themselves
Summary: Song Fic on Hilary Duff's "Someone's Watching Over Me"
A/N: This takes place after Alex's death. Everything up to when Max told Liz Tess was pregnant has happened, minus Liz investagating Alex's death. Max told Liz in a different way. In this fic, Liz can sing well enough and I'm going to pretend she wrote the song featured in it, but all rights go to Hilary Duff since it really is her song.
Disclaimer: I own nothing besides the names of the people in "The Whit's" because I don't know their names. The actual basis of "The Whit's" belong to Jason Katims. "Someone's Watching Over Me" belongs to Hilary Duff.
Two months. It's been two months since Alex passed away. Two months since I lost my best friend, my brother. Everything has changed and the 'I know an Alien Club' is no longer together, well so it seems. We are all so wrapped up in our lives, each of us dealing with Alex's death in our own way. Michael hibernates, painting all day, while Maria is constantly bugging him, wanting to be with him. Max and Tess have found solace in each other. I shudder to think about them together, but honestly, what can I do? Isabel keeps herself busy, drowning herself in graduating early. Kyle, my dear brother Kyle, he's neutral. Always there for everyone, seeing that everyone is okay and making it through. He's kind of taken Alex's role and some part of me is glad it was him.
As for me, I've recently discovered something, a revelation if you will. But first, I must tell you something else. It's been two months since Alex died, it's the last week of school and the talent show is tomorrow. That's right, West Roswell High is having their 10th Annual Talent Show. You see, the thing is, every years since we were freshmen, Alex and The Whit's owned the Talent Show. No one could beat them, or even come close to measuring up. This year, Maria's performing, so are a lot of other people. Everyone except the Whit's, or so...people think. I know a secret about this particular Talent Show and you will have wait to find out, what that secret is.

THREE WEEKS BEFORE TALENT SHOW
Walking slowly up to the front door, Liz took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts, her bookbag crushed to her side as she gripped it tightly. She had thought about doing this, ever since she heard about the talent show, but now as she slowly made her way up the stairs, she wasn't quite so sure anymore. Too Late. She had already rung the doorbell and two seconds later, Brian Wilson answered, wearing only a pair of baggy Levi's. Brian's eyes widened as he realized who was standing at his front door.
"Lizzie Parker?" He asked and Liz nodded quietly. "Wow, how are you? Haven't seen you in a while, you know, since you stopped showing up to practices," He joked playfully, patting her on the head, to which Liz offered a small smile. "I know and I'm extremely sorry, I just got busy," She whispered softly, watching him with her brown eyes. Brian had changed. He seemed taller then the last time she saw him and he had grown his hair out, as it flowed down to his shoulders now. "Please, come in," He offered, nudging the door wider, holding his hand out to her. Liz accepted his hand gratefully and stepped inside his house, Brian closing the door behind them.
"This way," He said politely, leading Liz over to the living room, gesturing to the couch, where Liz sat rigidly. Brian sat in a recliner, opposite the couch and watched Liz carefully. "To what do I owe this visit Lizzie?" He asked curious why the one girl he hadn't seen in a year was suddenly on his door step. Liz took a deep breath, running her hands through her hair.
"Well I know that you and the rest of the band haven't so much as picked up an instrument since..." Liz slightly trailed off, not wanting to say it outloud, but she could tell Brian got the message, seeing as he suddenly tensed up. Brian glared slightly, his mood changing drastically. "Yeah, so?" He asked, his voice chilly, sending shivers down her spine.
Liz sighed, standing up. "Maybe this was a bad idea," She said softly, before turning to leave, only to be stopped by a hand on her arm. She turned around to see Brian looking at her sadly. "Please, I'm sorry. I just...it's hard to believe he's gone, you know?" He explained softly, pulling her back over to the couch. Liz nodded slowly as they both sat down on the couch and she wrapped her arms around him in a hug. "I do that's why, I need your help," She said softly, pulling away from him to look him in the eye.
Brian eyed her slowly. "With what?" He asked, curious and he watched as Liz pulled out three sheets of paper from her back and handed them to him. He looked down at them before glancing up at her. "What's this?" He asked. Liz smiled slightly, "They're lyrics. I wrote them and I would like it if you and the rest of the guys would help me write the music for it." Silently she prayed, half hoping he would say yes, half hoping he would say no. Brian read the lyrics, flipping through the pages slowly. Once he was finished he looked up at her smiling. "I'll talk to the guys about it. Do you mind if I keep these, so I can show them?" He asked, folding them up. Liz nodded her head, reached to hug him again. He hugged her back tightly, offering comfort to her and her to him.
Hours later Liz left his house, a real smile on her face for the first time since Alex passed.

That night, Liz was busy cleaning the counter of the Crashdown and she didn't even notice the door open and close as Brian, Charlie Durst and Devon Klein walked in. She was in her own world, too busy thinking about what she did today and how much courage it took her to ask Brian for help. The three guys walked up to the counter and occupied three stools right in front of her. It wasn't until Brian cleared his throat that she even knew they were there. Liz looked up at them startled, then smiled as she realized who it was. "Hey guys," She said softly, folding up the rag and throwing it in the bucket.
"Lizzie," Charlie and Devon said at the same time, using their playful tones, causing Liz to smile, once again. "What are you guys doing here?" She asked, but a part of her knew why. "Well, Brian here, showed us your song," Charlie said, nudging Brian in the shoulder, who punched him back, but smiled at Liz. "And?" She asked nervously, biting her lip. "And...we've decided..." Devon started, taking a long pause, causing Liz's heart to want to beat outside her chest.
"And we'll do it," Brian finished for Devon, all three of them smiling at her. Liz felt like a huge weight had just been lifted off her shoulders and suddenly she felt lighter then she had in weeks. "You don't know how much this means to me, thank you," She said softly, looking down at the counter, trying to hide her tears. Brian could tell she was about to cry and he reached for his hand, enveloping it in his larger one. "No, thank you. You're getting us to play again, Liz." He explained, Charlie and Devon agreeing. "And besides, we wouldn't do this for just anybody. You were like a sister to Alex, to us all, we'd be glad to write the music," Charlie added as Liz looked up at them, reaching up to wipe away her unshed tears.
"Oh, who's going to be singing?" Devon asked, voicing Brian's and Charlie's question as well. Liz blushed as he asked the question. "Well...I am," She said, turning to take the bucket into the back. Devon, Charlie and Brian stared at her in wonder, not knowing Liz could sing. When she came back out, they were still staring wide eyed at the door, causing Liz to chuckle. "Geez guys, don't look so shocked," She said, walking over to them. "You can sing?" Charlie asked. Liz slowly nodded and all three of them jumped up to hug her. "Wow, this is amazing," Devon said, mussing Liz's hair slightly.
"Yes well, I'm not that great, but I'm good enough. So, when do we start?" She asked, moving over to pull the blinds down over the windows, as she jumped away from their arms. "How about tomorrow? After school?" Brian asked, walking over to the door, Devon and Charlie following him. "Sounds good to me," Liz said, following them, opening the door for them. "Cool, see you tomorrow Liz," Brian said, kissing her on the cheek, stepping outside, Charlie and Devon copying his moves. Liz laughed at them, closing the door behind them and locking it securely before heading to the back to shut off the lights.

A WEEK LATER
Liz trudged through the halls of West Roswell High, the students buzzing with life all around her. Excitement filled each one at the idea of the talent show, while the thought alone, scared her. Sighing, she turned a corner and bumped straight into Maria DeLuca, her long time best friend. "Elizabeth Parker, where have you been?" Maria asked her, hands on her hips as she stared down at her best friend, Liz being slightly shorter then the blonde. "Around," Liz muttered, not really wanting to deal with Maria right now. "Around? Liz, you haven't been 'around' all week. You haven't been working in the Crashdown. Everyday after school you seem to disappear to only God knows where. Do you know how scared we are for you, Liz?" Maria's shrilly voice caused Liz to cringe, then glare at her.
"Who's we, Maria? You and your multiple personalities or actual people?" Liz asked, crossing her arms over her chest. She was tired of being walked on and she wasn't about to let her best friend do the same thing to her. Maria reared back in shock at her comment, allowing a hand to cover her heart. "What happened to the Liz Parker I used to know?" She asked tearfully, her voice quivering as she realized her best friend was gone. Liz rolled her eyes, moving past Maria. "She died along with Alex," She replied right into Maria's ear before walking away, leaving Maria to stand alone in the hallway as the late bell rung.
Liz walked as fast as she could, trying to get away from Maria, not wanting to be near her. Not watching where she was going, once again, she ran into a hard wall, or what she thought was a wall, anyway. Looking up, she saw Michael towering over her, looking down into her deep brown eyes.
"Liz," His husky, rough voice sent delicious shivers down her spine. "Michael," Liz replied just as huskily as she felt his arms around her back, supporting her, keeping her from falling on her ass. They stared into each other's eyes for a minute, the silence was defening and just as Liz was about to say something, Michael's lips crashed onto hers. His spicy, musky scent mixed with her sweet one, becoming one euphoric scent. Liz reached up, threading her fingers through his mane, bringing his mouth closer to hers, brushing her toungue against his bottom lip, as all thoughts flew from her mind. Michael greedily granted her access, opening his mouth, his toungue mixing with hers, causing him to groan into her mouth. Reaching down, Michael gripped at her bottom, pulling her tight against him as she moaned into his mouth.
Suddenly, the bell rang, causing them to spring apart as if touching each other had burned them. Liz brought a hand up to her swollen lips as she stared down at the ground, thinking about what had just happened. Looking up, she realized Michael had disappeared, not wanting to confront her and Liz sighed defeatedly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
That afternoon, Liz found herself in the basement of Brian's house, listening as the three guys tried to get their rhythum right. She was lost in her own world as she thought back on the kiss her and Michael had shared earlier that day. Her mouth was still swollen slightly and she smiled, still tasting his scent inside her mouth. Looking up she found Brian, Charlie and Devon staring at her, all three of them smirking slightly. "What?" Liz asked innocently as she stood up and moved over to the mic. "Nothing," All three of them said, holding their hands up, still smirking at her. Liz shook her head. "Men," She muttered as Brian began playing the opening chords of the song on his guitar.
They practiced until 9, when Liz got a phone call from her mother, telling her to come home. Liz apologized to the guys saying she needed to get home, leaving shortly after.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Sighing, Liz stepped into her room a half hour later, shredding her jacket and purse, laying them on her chair. As she was walking past her bed to the bathroom, she noticed a figure lounging leisurly on her bed. Reaching over, she switched on her light in the bathroom and stared at the person. "Max? What are you doing here?" She asked menacingly, her eyes flaring with anger.
Max smirked, getting off the bed slowly. "I saw you, with Michael," He said bluntly, laying it all on the table. Liz shrugged, walking over to her dresser, pulling out her pajama's. "So?" She asked, sounding bored as she walked over to her bathroom and threw the pajama's on the floor. Max slowly walked towards her, until he was standing right in front of her, him on one side of the bathroom, her on the other. "What do you think Maria would think about you kissing her boyfriend?" He asked her, raising an eyebrow, resting his hands on either side of the door frame.
Liz rolled her eyes, scoffing. "Please, Maria doesn't even love him. Besides, it's none of your business who I'm kissing, I mean...afterall...your the one fucking the slut's behind my back," She said slowly, calmly, glaring at him. Max held her glare, staring back at her. "If you're not gone before I am finished in here, you are going to be ball-less," Liz threatened slamming the door in his face, locking it. She heard him leave and she let out a breath she hadn't realized she had been holding. Resting her head against the door, she felt a few tears slip down her cheeks as she took a few deep breaths.
"I don't know how much longer I can take this," She whispered to no one in particular, as she slowly undressed, preparing for a nice, long, hot bath.
THE DAY OF THE TALENT SHOW
Liz had been jittery all day, due to the fact that the Talent Show was taking place at exactly 8:00 PM that night. The past two weeks had been hectic and stressful as Liz tried to dodge Max, Maria and Michael along with everyone else, besides Brian, Charlie and Devon. Maria was still angry at her for her comment that day in the hallway. Michael hasn't even looked, let along spoken to her since their kiss and Max keeps acting like he's the king of the world. Shaking her head, Liz walked up the steps to Brian's house for one last practice.
That night, the Talent Show was spectacular. Liz watched, hidden from backstage as everyone performed. She had to admit, Maria was perfect as always and everyone else was really good, too. No one knew that she was going to perform or that The Whit's were going to help her, either. Liz held her breath as the last person finished their performance and Principle McKinnley went up onstage to introduce them.
"Good evening, students and parents. Tonight, for our very last performance we have a special treat for you." Principle McKinnley said, turning towards her direction, winking before he turned back to the crowd. "Please welcome, Elizabeth Parker and The Whit's," He said cheerfully expecting a few cheers or applause, but her recieved none, everyone too shocked to move or say anything.
Liz, Devon, Charlie and Brian slowly walked onto the stage, each one taking their places, Liz behind the mic, Brian picked up his guitar, Devon stood behind his keyboard and Charlie sat behind his drums. Looking out into the crowd, Liz could see her parents sitting in the front row, the Evan's minus Max and Isabel sitting close to them, Jim sitting near the middle with Kyle and Amy DeLuca sitting beside her daughter, who seemed to have fallen into a state of shock. Michael was standing by the entrance, his oh so cool expression in place as he leaned against the wall, his arms crossed. She also saw the Whitmans sitting somewhere near Isabel. Max was sitting with Tess, holding her hand, on the right side of the auditorium, while Isabel sat by herself in the back. Liz noticed how everyone seemed to have their eyes fixed on her and the band. There weren't even people chattering amongst themselves.
Taking a deep breath, Liz cleared her throat and spoke into the mic. "Hello. I guess you guys weren't expecting this, huh? Well, I decided to write this song a few weeks ago and I asked for The Whit's to help me create the music. This song is dedicated to Alexander Whitman, who unfortunately lost his life almost two months ago. For those of you who knew Alex, I know he held a special place in your heart and for those of you who didn't, I feel sorry for you. This song is my way of healing and I feel that I should share it with you, but most of all I should share it with my friends," Liz purposely looked at each and every one of her so called friends. She had called them her friends because somewhere deep down inside, she knew that's how Alex would have wanted it to be and that's how she wanted it to be.
"So here it goes," She finished softly, before the lights dimmed and the spotlight fixated on her and the band. Brian started the guitar intro, the music starting out slowly and soothingly. Liz waited a few chords before opening her mouth to sing.
I found myself today
Oh I found myself and ran away
Something pulled me back
The voice of reason I forgot I had
All I know is just you're not here to say
What you always used to say
But it's written in the sky tonight
Liz felt the music pick up as she started in on the chorus.
So I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me
Smiling, Liz looked around the crowd and noticed how people began moving with the music as she continued with the second verse.
Seen that ray of light
And it's shining on my destiny
Shining all the time
And I wont be afraid
To follow everywhere it's taking me
All I know is yesterday is gone
And right now I belong
Took this moment to my dreams
So I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me
Liz felt the music move faster as Charlie joined in on the drums, leading into a musical intrulude and a few moments later, Liz kept on singing.
It doesn't matter what people say
Liz looked from Isabel to Michael to Max and Tess as she sang.
And it doesn't matter how long it takes
Glances at Kyle and Maria.
Believe in yourself and you'll fly high
And it only matters how true you are
Be true to yourself and follow your heart
Looks over all of them, before moving her body to the music, still singing.
So I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
That I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even when it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
That someone's watching over
Someone's watching over
Someone's watching over me
Liz felt the music slow down as she stood in front of the mic, holding it in both her hands. She sang the last line as the music and the lights faded out completely, leaving them in darkness.
Someone's watching over me
AFTER THE TALENT SHOW
So you see, my revelation was simple. No matter what, Alex is watching over me, over all of us and I should give up, just because he's gone. He's still here, still alive in our hearts. I'm not sure if our friends got the message, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, I'll just be happy knowing that Alexander Charles Whitman, is with me, wherever I go.
