No one ever noticed the way he always watched her. It was a subtle gesture, but it was there all the same. Not even Maria saw the looks he gave her. It wasn’t like he was trying to hide how he felt. Actually, he hoped that someone would notice. Then she’d finally know. She’d finally know that he loved her.
He was in love with goody-goody Liz Parker, his best friend’s girlfriend and his girlfriend’s best friend. It was like he was stuck in an episode of Dawson’s Creek.

It had started off innocently enough. It was simple respect for Liz at first. After all, it wasn’t everyday that someone had the courage to stand up to him like she had the night of the Crash Festival. It took guts to do that – something most people lacked. Yet that tiny little brunette had held her ground, she had defied him.
It had progressed into something more after he had stolen her journal – after he’d caught a glimpse of the real Liz Parker. She was like him in some ways. She guarded herself, never one realizing how truly wonderful, beautiful, she really was. After that, respect had turned into a crush.

Whenever you come around me
After the whole destiny fiasco, Liz had gone to Florida to spend some time with her aunt and get away from Max. He realized he missed her while she was gone. Not seeing her exuberant self when he came to work made the day seem longer somehow. Her absence at the Crashdown, at the ‘I-know-an-alien-club’ meetings, left a void in him. And that scared the hell out of him.
That’s when he realized that he had fallen in love with her.

He’d pushed Maria away after that. How could he be with her when all he could think about was Liz? It wouldn’t have been fair to her. It still wasn’t fair to him. Yet he didn’t mind…being alone.
Watching, for now at least, was enough. Just knowing that she existed made breathing a little bit easier. One day he would tell her. One day he would get the courage to let her know that, even though she may not have realized it, she had been the one to break through his stone wall. She made Michael Guerin feel.
