"Isabel...."
Jim nudged her bare shoulder, trying to stir her from her slumber. He had already finished with his shower, so there was no use in putting off waking her for any longer.
"Shaddup."
Isabel chucked her pillow over her head at the unnamed offender, demanding silence.
Even after that, she still hadn't woken up.
He chuckled as she let out a very unladylike snore, smashing her face flat against the pillow that had been his.
"Isabel, wake up."
She didn't move.
"Isabel, Kyle will be awake soon."
Groaning, she sat up.
Wordlessly, he handed her her coffee, made with extra sugar and tobasco.
She took a drag of the brew, and stretched like a cat, yawning.
"Mornin'."
He smirked.
"I didn't think you'd ever wake up."
She pouted in her cute little way.
"No? Well, I'm up now."
Putting her coffee on the bedside table, she crawled over to him, kissing him seductively.
With a groan he pulled away, worried that Kyle would hear.
He placed a finger against her lips when she began to protest.
"Happy Valentine's day, Isabel."
She grinned against his finger, kissing it.
"Happy Valentine's day to you too, Jim."
Sure it was only 5-am, but that didn't make it any less Valentine's day.
"I should get dressed."
He nodded, moving aside. Still, it was a shame. She made such a pretty picture against his sheets.
She walked over to the chair in the corner, picking up her clothes from the night before.
It was never as much fun watching her put them back on.
"Jim?"
"Hmmm?"
"Have you seen my panties?"
"What, these?"
Giving her a devilish grin, he dangled them at her.
"Jim, come on. I need those."
"Why? It's more exciting if you're not wearing any."
She laughed at that, having grace enough to blush for both of them.
She swiped at her underwear, but he pulled them out of her grasp. With a gasp, she fell off balance, and onto his lap.
"You planned that!"
He tried to look innocent.
"What are you talking about? It's not my fault that you can't keep your hands off of me."
"Fine."
She made as if to get up, but he caught her around her waist, holding her to him.
"What are you doing later?"
She pushed his hair back from his face, smoothing his forehead.
"I figured I'd come over, and we'd watch a movie, or something."
He nuzzled her neck.
"It's Valentine's day, Isabel."
"No shit. I know that Jim, but what do you suggest we do about that?"
"I suggest..."
He paused for emphasis, his fingers absentmindedly caressing her hair.
"I suggest that we go out to dinner."
She looked at him as if he were crazy.
"What? Out in public? WHERE? Max would freak out."
He kissed her, silencing her rising voice.
"Las Cruces. I made a reservation at an Italian place near the dorms. It's perfect. You can just tell your family that you're meeting friends, or something. Max can think what he wants to."
"And after?"
He tried to look innocent. He was never good at that.
"What are you suggesting, young lady?"
He arched an eyebrow.
"All right, all right."
He laughed, his hands still on her hips.
"There's a four star hotel just down the road from the restaurant. I may have been able to get a room..."
She resisted the urge to squeal, instead clasping her hands to her mouth.
"So we're really doing something for Valentine's day? A couples thing?"
He wanted to kiss her so badly.
"You could say that."
She got up off of his lap, (to his disappointment), grabbing her panties from him in the process. Moving back to the chair, she pulled her sandals back on.
"So what's the plan?"
Fixated with the temptation of her legs, Jim paused.
"Hmm?"
"The plan, Jim."
"Right, right. Well, you're done with school at three, and the reservation is for seven. What time did you want me to pick you up?"
"Pick me up?"
She looked confused.
"Wouldn't it make more sense to just meet there?"
"Yeah..."
He scratched the back of his head self-consciously.
"Yeah, but I kind of want this to be like an actual date, you know? We haven't had many, or any of those."
Rising up from the chair, Isabel walked over to the bed, sinking down next to him.
"You know that doesn't matter to me."
He nodded reluctantly, looking at the carpet.
"I know, I know. I just want to give you better. You deserve better."
She silenced him by covering his mouth with hers, drawing him deeply into a gentle kiss.
They parted, foreheads touching.
"It. Doesn't. Matter. To. Me."
She smiled.
"You're perfect for me. You're perfect to me. I couldn't ask for more."
He gave a short laugh.
"You could, you're just too sweet to."
That was Jim. Moments of brash arrogance coupled with spells of self doubt.
"Even if I could, I wouldn't want to."
They kissed again, breaking apart when Isabel pulled away.
"So you'll pick me up where?"
"I was thinking you could leave your car over in the park, and I'd pick you up from there. It's the middle of February, there probably won't be anyone over there."
She walked over the window, raising the sash.
"Sounds like a plan. Does 6 sound like a good time?"
He was watching her legs, again.
"Looks perfect.... SOUNDS perfect, sounds perfect."
She flipped her hair over her shoulder, striking a pose for him.
"I'm glad to hear it," she purred.
"See you at 6," were her last words before sliding her leg over the windowsill, and then her whole self out of the window.
"Isabel!"
"Yeeees?"
He walked over to the window, and leaned out.
"I love you."
She flashed him a saucy grin, before pulling him to her for yet another heated kiss.
"I love you too," she breathed.
"Look...."
She turned from his embrace to see the sun coming up over the trees behind them.
"It's beautiful."
His eyes were trained on her, as he gave his reply.
"Yeah."
She smiled, somehow knowing that he wasn't talking about the sunrise. She turned to look at him, running her hand self-consciously through her hair.
"So I'll see you later?"
"Yeah. Yeah."
She turned to leave.
"Oh, wait just a second!"
She pretended to huff her annoyance, crossing her arms as he darted from the window to the other side of the bed, and then back again.
"Here."
He handed her a single sterling rose.
"I'll see you at dinner."
She ran a finger-tip over one of its soft petals.
"How is it that you had that in the room, and I didn't even notice it?"
She brought the rose to her nose, appreciatively inhaling it's delicate scent.
"We were kind of busy..."
She laughed out loud at that, clamping her hand to her mouth so as not to wake Kyle.
"That's true."
She arched an eyebrow at him, suggestively.
"And plus,"
He crossed his arms, assuming an arrogant stance.
"I'm the king of surprises."
"That's true."
"Well, you'd better be off before Kyle gets up."
At that moment the shower sputtered to life, and their ears were treated to the sound of Kyle warbling away to some Mötley Crüe song.
Jim sighed, embarrassed for his son, as Isabel collapsed in a fit of silent giggles.
"I don't know what to do with him."
"Aw, don't worry about that. All you have to know is what to do with me."
Suddenly, 6 o'clock couldn't come fast enough.
With a parting grin, Isabel turned and sprinted across the dew spattered lawn, her rose clutched to her chest. Jim watched her go with a sigh, leaning heavily on the window frame. She jumped into the jeep, and blew him a kiss as she drove off.
He shut the window, walking over to his dresser. He opened the top drawer, pulling out a clean white tee shirt. He paused, pulling a small black velvet jewelry box from in between his socks. Opening it, he revealed a sparkling diamond ring.
With a grin, he pulled the tee shirt over his head, tucking the box back into the drawer.
6 o'clock would come eventually, and Isabel would finally know just how deep his feelings for her went.
The king of surprises, indeed.

Michael: Let me guess, you're mad because you're in love with a girl and she's with another guy.
Max: You can be really annoying sometimes, you know that?
