CHAPTER 22
Max POV
I can’t believe I’m going to Boston early. I called Austin and he was able to find me a job, even though we didn’t get along, ok so we hated each other, he did me a huge favor. His boss’s wife is the head of the science department, and she had a job opening for a gopher. So, she gave me the job! She didn’t even interview me! All she told me over the phone was, “I was the one that in twenty years needed to still look at Liz and be in love with her when her boobs sagged.” I had no idea what the heck she was talking about, but she offered me the job and I took it. I thanked her, and told her I would be there early Monday morning.
Now, standing in my room and looking around, it feels so empty. There’s nothing in it except for ten years of memories. I’ve lived in this room for ten years and now I’m leaving it all behind. It’s strange, I don’t feel like I’m leaving my home, because my home is now in Boston, and she’s waiting for me.
I went to the Crashdown to say all my goodbyes. I walked in and just stood there looking around. As I look over I can’t help but smile seeing Maria and Michael sitting in my usual booth. “Hey guys, well I’m gonna be heading out in about an hour.”
Michael stands up to greet me. “Max, no goodbyes man. I’ll see you in two weeks.” He gives me a quick hug, we’re guys…we don’t hug like girls.
Next, Maria stands up. “You, my dear, have been a royal pain in the ass, but I love you. Take care of my Lizzy, be good to her, or I’ll cut off your body parts…. important ones!” Maria hugs me tight and I start to laugh. You just have to love Maria!
“I will, Maria, promise. I love you too.”
Alex hugs me next. “See you in a couple of weeks. Be good!” Then the bell to the Crashdown sounded and it walked in.
There in all her horrid splendor was, as Liz put it…the bleached bitch from hell, Tess! She looked much thinner, and so terrible that I almost felt sorry for her. Almost! She smiles at me and I look back at the group. Maria can always be counted on to show her true feelings! She gives me her famous. “I hope you know what you’re getting yourself into” look.
Reluctantly, I walked over to Tess. “Hey, Tess.”
Tess smiles and pushes her blonde curls behind her ear. “Hi, Max. How have you been?”
“Good, and you?”
She smiles her fake smile. “Good, you know, leaving for Cambridge in a few weeks. What about you?”
My smiled couldn’t be contained and it spread all the way to my ears. “I’m headed to Boston today. I got a job, and I’m going to go to Harvard.”
She shook her head. “That’s good, Max. I figured you would follow Parker…how is she by the way?”
“She’s great, I think. I haven’t talked to her in a couple of days.”
Not wanting to hear anymore, Tess starts to leave. “Well, Max it was good seeing you. Listen, I’m sorry for being so nasty to you, to Liz. Please tell her hi for me, and tell her I said congrats.”
“On what?” I’m curious as to what she’s talking about.
“Tell her I said congrats on the two of you getting together. Tell her it took you two long enough.” She hugged me, and I actually hugged her back. Then, she turned around and she was gone.
I went back to the group and told them goodbye before heading for the house. When I got home, I headed straight for the phone, and dialed Liz’s number. I didn’t even have to look at the paper, I know it by heart.
“Boston Morgue! You stab um, we slab um.”
Ok, this is the third time I’ve called and this guy Dave has answered the phone. The last time I called he answered the phone “Heaven, God speaking.”
“Dave this is…”
“Un memento, Maxamillion. HEY, PARKER, YOUR BOOTY CALL IS ON LINE TWO!”
Did he really have to shout that out loud? She’s most likely across the hall anyway. I hear her laughing, and hear a slapping noise on the other end of the line.
“Geez, P, did you have to hit? You told me to tell you who was on the phone and it was better than saying plain old Max. NO OFFENCE MAX!”
I laugh into the phone. “NONE TAKEN!”
“P, that dude is cool! TU TIENES MUCHO AWESOMENSS!!!” He screams at me.
“Dave, get out of here! Go raid 465’s fridge. MAX, oh my gosh I haven’t talked to you in forever!”
“Yeah, you know that great invention we’re currently using called the phone? Well, it works both ways! AHHH” I smile at myself, I’m such a smart ass.
“I know, I’m so sorry. I’ve just been so busy. Finals are this week, so I’m trying to get it all done. I was talking to your parents about coming home, but they wouldn’t let me.”
I can hear the anger-slash-sadness in her voice. I almost want to tell her I’m coming there, but I want to surprise her. “I know, they told me, but it’s ok. I’ll be there in two weeks.”
“But two weeks is forever, Max.”
I smile at her eagerness. “It’s not that long, Lizzybeth, No worries, it’ll fly by.”
I could picture her smiling at me. “Ok, they’ll fly by. So, what are you doing?”
“I just got back from the Crash. I was having lunch and I saw Tess.” Ok dumb move! Mental note, insert foot into mouth
“You saw Tess?”
There’s no use in lying. “Yeah, I saw her.”
“Did you have lunch with her?”
“No, I just ran into her. That’s all, nothing more, nothing less.”
“I can’t believe you’re being so calm about this?”
Ok, what’s her problem? “Liz, there’s nothing to get worked up about. I ran into her, talked to her, she hugged me, told me goodbye, and I left.”
“You touched her?”
There’s pain in her voice, which was the last thing I wanted. “Liz, what’s the deal? There’s nothing going on. I ran into her, we just talked, and she hugged me for old time’s sake… that’s it.”
“Did you sleep with her for old time’s sake too?”
OCUH! That hurt. I’m ending this conversation before it gets any worse. “You obviously don’t have a clue as to what you’re saying, so I’m hanging up now. Goodbye, Liz.” I hung up…I didn’t even say that I loved her. I look up and find my mom standing there.
“We’re ready, baby.” I look around the house and take it all in. I hug Isabel, and tell her that I love her and say goodbye. Then…we start on our way. I am upset by what Liz has said, but I know why she said it.
Liz POV
It’s been two days since my conversation with Max and I haven’t heard from him. He won’t return my phone calls, and Isabel says he’s not around. I called the Crashdown and Agnes told me he’d quit, so she hadn’t seen him. She said the last time she’d seen him, was there having lunch with Tess. UGHHH! I called Phillip and Diane, but they’re on their way here to settle some business with the apartment. They told me not to worry that things would work themselves out.
I walk across the hall to Austin’s apartment and see him at the counter reading. He’s always reading something, and he’s always at that same spot at the counter. “You know, Parker, I’m gonna start charging you…this is taking up reading time. All right, tell Dr. Benson what’s wrong with you?” He puts his book down and looks at me.
“I told Max something a couple of days ago and he hung up on me…we haven’t talked since. Nothing at all…I’m worried.”
“What did you say?” He looks at me and I’m almost afraid to tell him.
“Ok…so he told me that he ran into Tess at the Crashdown and he talked to her.”
“Ok and what’s so bad about that?”
When he put it that way I realized how stupid I was being. This was dumb. What had I done? “Oh no.”
“Parker, what did you say?”
“He told me that he hugged her…and I kinda made the comment did you sleep with her too?” Just then the dishtowel came flying and hit me in my face.
“You know, for someone who’s as smart as you are, you sure say stupid shit! Liz, here we go again. Man are you thick headed! You are almost worse than a man! My GOD do we have to keep going over this? GET OVER IT!! STOP DOING IT!!! GO GET ON THE DAMN PHONE AND APOLOGIZE TILL YOU ARE BLUE IN THE FACE AND HE DOESN’T WANT TO HEAR IT ANYMORE!”
I’ve never heard him get so snippy with me, but it does the trick. “Ok, I get the point! Thank you!” I quickly head out of the apartment and into mine. I walk into my room and try calling the house, no answer. I try Max’s cell phone, no answer. “Damn, Max, where are you?” Just then, I hear the apartment door open and close. “Hey P, you have….”
I’ve had enough! “David! Go find your own food and leave me alone!” I walk out and see Phillip in my living room. “Oh, Philip, hello. Dave, I’m sorry.”
Dave smiles widely at me. “I will so be back when you guys have been to the store. Oh and, Liz, don’t forget those little things with the cheese in the middle!” I throw the towel at him and he leaves.
Phillip is standing there looking at me. “Well, don’t I get a hug?” I walk over and hug him. For not being my dad, he’s the closet thing I have to one. In his arms I feel loved and safe. “How are you, Liz?”
I look at him with tears forming in my eyes. “I kinda blew up on Max the other day and now he won’t return my calls. I’m home sick and I am so glad that you are hear.” My voice almost fails me, but he looks at me and smiles.
“Oh, Liz, I’m sure it’s ok. He’s probably out with Michael and Alex buying stuff for the apartment. Well come on. Diane is in the car and wants to take you to dinner.”
Immediately, I go get my purse and head downstairs. When I get to the car Diane gets out and hugs me, squeezing me tight. “Hello, sweetie! You look great, and your hair is beautiful.” She plays with my hair until Philip speaks up.
“Ladies, if we’re going to make dinner we need to go.” As soon as I get into the car they begin to tell me about Roswell and everything in it. I just kept silent looking at my hands. All through dinner they talked and I listened. I’m still a little bitter that they wouldn’t let me come home for two weeks. I don’t see why I couldn’t. I want to bring it up, but I don’t.
“Liz sweetie, why are you so quiet?” Diane looks at me and I smile.
“Finals and stuff…I’m just really tired.” I look at Philip and I can see he knows. He’s looking at me and he knows how I’m feeling.
“I think we can talk more tomorrow. Let’s get you home.” He winks at me and we head go back to my apartment.
When we get there my roommates are arguing. “Guys, what’s the problem?” They turn and look at me funny. “What?”
“Liz, um…this was outside.” She hands me a paper bag and it has my name on it.
I open it and find my bear inside. “Where was this? How did it get here?” I look at them, like they’re really going to know.
“Liz, we came home and it was here.” They both look at each other.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“Maybe you should go across the hall.”
I grab the bag and storm across the hall. The front of the apartment is empty. “AUSTIN WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?” I go everywhere looking for him and I hear laughter coming from the balcony. I start ranting before I even get out there. “Austin, what the hell is going on? I get home and someone has left me my bear, a bear that I left in Roswell. So, the girls tell me to come over here.” I step out onto the balcony and there he is.

Amy's computer is down, so I don't know how soon she'll be updating again
Ok, on with the chapter...
CHAPTER 23
Slowly, I walked out onto the porch and there he was. For a brief moment I thought I was hallucinating, but it was real…Max was there. Words seemed to escape me, so we just stood there in total silence. What was he doing here? Why was he with Austin and why were they laughing? I’m completely lost in a trance with a million things rolling through my mind.
“Liz? Earth to Liz?”
The sound of Austin’s voice brings me back to the moment. “What?”
“Are you ok?”
“I’m fine.” I state casually, trying desperately to hide my surprise. “Max, what are you doing here?” It’s not that I’m not happy to see him, because I am. I’m glad he’s here, I’m glad to know he’s safe, but at the same time, I’m perturbed. For two days now he hasn’t returned my calls, making me think we were though, but now he’s here.
“I came to surprise you. I moved in today!”
“You what?” Did he just say he moved in today? Did I hear him right?
“Liz?”
I sit down on the wood floor of the deck, still in total shock. You would think I wasn’t happy about this. Don’t get me wrong, I am, but I’m lost! After the last few days everything seems to be happening so fast.
“Liz? Are you ok?” Max sounds worried, so he sits down in front of me taking my face in his hands.
Suddenly angry, I push his hands away and get up to look at Austin. “Did you know he was coming here?”
Austin looks confused just as I do, but he shakes his head. “Yes…I did. Liz, are you ok?”
Why the hell is everyone asking me that? “I’m fine! How dare you!” I can’t be here right now. Quickly, I turn around and run out of the apartment. Instincts take over, so I head straight for the spot that Max and I had decided to make our own. I’ve been there a lot lately and I just want to be there now. I run and run until I feel like I’m going to die from running out of breath. Finally, I reach the clearing and sit at the bench to catch my breath.
I’m really not sure why I reacted the way I did. The only thing I do know right now is that he didn’t answer my calls for two days, and Austin watched me in total agony. Then, Max just shows up here and I see both of them laughing as if nothing ever happened.
I don’t know how long I’ve been sitting here, on our bench, when I hear a noise behind me. I don’t need to turn around, I know it’s Max…I could feel him coming. “You found me.”
“Yeah, I kinda figured you would come here.” It scares me how well he knows me “Liz, what’s wrong?”
I almost shrug, but then I realize I’m the one that told him I was sick of the game playing. So now I need to tell him what I’m thinking. “I over reacted about you and Tess, Max. I know it was probably nothing, but I overreacted anyway. I tried so many times to call you so I could tell you that, but you didn’t return my calls. Max, for two days I didn’t know if you were ok or not…do you know what that did to me? Then, I get home from dinner, with your parents, only to find you in Austin’s apartment laughing. Please, Max…tell me what’s going on, because I’m confused.”
Max sat down next to me and took my right hand in his left. “Liz, I told you before I left that I wouldn’t apologize for being with Tess anymore. I told you I wouldn’t let you throw it in my face. I made a mistake with her and I have already apologized for it. The problem with that…you’re not over what happened. You’re still holding on to it, and believe me I don’t blame you. I know if it were the other way around, I’d be holding on to it too. That’s why I hung up on you the other day…I didn’t want to say something I knew I would regret. Liz, I don’t feel anything for Tess, all she did was hug me. I realize that this is a process and I’m going to have to be patient with you, so I will. As for not calling you for two days, I’m so sorry. I just wanted to surprise you. When we hung up I didn’t want to be away from you any longer, so I decided to come out here now instead of waiting. Mom and Dad said I could, so I packed up and said good-bye to everyone. That’s why mom and dad wouldn’t let you come back home. As for me being at Austin’s, he’s the only person, other than you, that I know here.”
Boy do I feel stupid! “Max, I’m sorry. I know you’re frustrated, but you’re going to have to give me time to deal with the whole Tess issue, it isn’t easy for me. Then when you didn’t call for two days…I was worried.” I’m quiet for a couple of seconds. “So, you live here now?” That’s when the smile starts to spread widely across my face.
“Yeah, I’m in the apartment already. The guys will be here in two weeks.”
“Well, now I can spend all my free time showing you around.”
“I was hoping you would say that!”
I take his face in my hands and kiss him. “I’m sorry I was such an ass.”
He shrugs. “Sometimes it’s allowed, just don’t make a habit out of it.” He teases. Still holding my hand he stands up and pulls me with him. “Come on, Miss Parker, I have to show you my apartment.”
Normally I would’ve complained about the walk, but not tonight. Tonight I’m just glad he’s here with me. As we’re walking, we talk about school. I tell him about my new job working with my Bio professor as a gopher, which sends him into a fit of laughter. “Ok, I don’t know why you find that funny?”
“You’re going to find this hilarious…I got a job working as a gopher with her too.”
My eyes get wide. “You’re the new boy from out west she hired and wouldn’t tell me about.” It all finally makes sense. “She kept telling me about some kid that she hired from out west that had a girlfriend whom he had better love when her boobs were sagging.”
“What is with that woman and her boobs?”
I just laugh, “I don’t know, but she thinks you should love a woman regardless. I smile adoringly at him.
“I will love you regardless.”
“Nice to know.”
When we get to the apartment there are boxes everywhere. “Did you bring Michael and Alex’s stuff too?”
“Yeah, some of the stuff they didn’t need.” He takes my hand and leads me to the couch.
“New couch?”
“Yep, Alex’s parents got it for us.”
I’m in total shock. “Alex’s parents actually bought you something?”
“No kidding. Liz, there’s something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about.”
Now I’m worried. “Ok shoot.”
“When you wrote your paper why did you choose me?”
“I chose you because you were the one person other than grandma who’d ever influenced me. You loved me, and you believed in me. I wanted that paper to say what I couldn’t say to you at the time. Max, it was all true. You always showed me that I was special, and that I was loved. When my parents died you were the one that was there for me, the one who held me when I cried. So, the only way I could tell you was to write it.” I look up and meet his eyes, but his face is expressionless.
“It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever read, Liz, but I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know that was how you’d felt and I was such an ass. How, when I was such an ass could you still love me? Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful, but why?”
“Because, Max, no matter how much of an ass you were, I still loved you. It was unconditional. It wasn’t something I could just turn my back on.” I pulled him into my arms and hugged him tightly.
“Thank you, Liz. For loving me even when I was an ass!”
I smile at him and kiss him. I know things are going to be better from now on!

Chapter 24
Six Weeks Later…
Max POV
Things seem to finally be settling down now, even though the past few weeks have flown by in a whirlwind. Michael and Alex finally arrived just in time to move in and be ready for classes to start. Both of them love it here, the excitement, the nightlife, everything. They’ve already made enough trips to New York City to break a World record, so it’s safe to say they’ve adjusted to life here quite nicely. Unfortunately, Maria and Isabel have yet to be able to come down for a visit.
I’m working five days a week in the Science lab, so I’m being kept really busy. I’m running off papers, sending out the mail, and picking it up. The basic life of a Gofer, but it pays for my outings with Liz and many other things, so I really have no complaints. Actually, I really like working for the Science department. I’ve met a lot of cool people, and I love Professor Gandy. She’s already promised me her TA position when I get a little bit older and more advanced with school.
I started school, and I love it already! I can’t believe I almost gave this up to go to Cambridge when I thought that was what I had wanted. Now I know this is the life I always wanted. I don’t think I could picture my life anymore without Michael and Alex, my job in the Science department, and most of all Lizzybeth.
Liz is great! She’s working hard, and loving school. She’s already a semester ahead of all of us, and she’s working toward an internship in the Science program for next summer. She decided against the medical program when she finally realized science was her passion, and medicine was only a second choice. She’s majoring in biology, which is keeping her extremely busy, but pretty much lives at our apartment. We have date nights every Friday night, and tonight is Friday night.
I’m really excited about tonight, we’re going to see a movie in the park. It’s the last night it will be playing for the year since the weather is starting to turn cold. Tonight they’re playing Breakfast at Tiffany’s, one of Liz’s favorite movies. I offered to take her to dinner first, but she declined. She only wanted to see the movie, but I packed a picnic basket just in case. I’m supposed to pick her up soon, and then we’re heading for the park.
Alex and Michael are being their usually obnoxious selves, teasing me about getting ready. “Oh, Max, you look sooo cute!” Alex says in a girly voice. I look over at him and shoot him a glare as I put my black shirt on and look at the clock. Liz should be getting home right about now, but I’m sure she’ll want to take a shower before we go. I vaguely notice Alex in the background still taunting me about my date tonight. “Oh, Max, kiss me.” He puts his hand over Michael’s mouth and pretends to kiss him. Michael pushes him off, and jumps back a couple feet.
“Dude! That’s gross!”
“Ok, that’s enough you two, knock it off.” I put on some cologne and grab my keys before heading out the door. “Ok, guys…don’t wait up.”
“Max, is tonight the night?”
I shoot them both an evil look. “Dude, could you just lay off? It’s none of your business.” I don’t wait for a reply, but instead head out the door leaving them behind.
I’ve been seriously deprived of sex for a while now, but Liz told me she’d made a promise to herself to wait until she got married to have sex. So, no matter how much I want Liz, I’ll have to settle for some heavy make out sessions. Of course even making out always leads to a lot of touching, but then she backs away from me. I love her so much so, I respect her decision, I’m totally frustrated, but I still respect it.
When I get to Liz’s apartment I start to walk in, but decide it’s safer to knock. Normally I don’t, but a couple nights ago I walked in on Austin and Liz’s roommate making out, something I really didn’t need to see. I raise my hand and knock on the door, then out of all the people around who could’ve opened the door…Dave does. He’s there as usual raiding the fridge.
“Maxamisimo, my man! What’s up?” He shakes my hand in a friendly gesture, and I laugh.
“Nothing, Dave. Raiding the fridge again?”
“You know, Liz sure knows how to shop. I really hope you two don’t get married or move in together any time soon, otherwise I’m following!”
“No…you wouldn’t.” I want to believe he’s kidding, but just in case I’m being completely serious.
“No he wouldn’t what?” Liz comes out dressed in jeans and a purple shirt, looking absolutely beautiful.
“No he wouldn’t follow you if you moved.”
Liz smiled widely at the implication. “Who said I was moving?”
Dave looks over at her innocently. “No one. I was just saying you know how to shop, so if you moved I’d have to follow.”
Liz smiles her most intoxicating smile again, and I can tell she feels appreciated. Although, she does find it annoying that her food is gone most of the time.
“It’s nice to know Dave here loves me, even if it’s only for my food!” Liz wraps her arms around Dave, and then looks at me.
“Well, baby, what do you say we ditch this bone head and eat food together?” Dave teases.
Liz looks at him passionately, “As tempting and seductive as that sounds, all it would be is a one night stand of eating together, and I love you too much to do that too you.” Dave gives her his most pathetic puppy dog look, causing her to smile. “Besides, Max, would get insanely jealous that I ate with you, since it’s something reserved for only him.” Liz kisses Dave on the cheek, and then crosses the room to greet me properly with a kiss.
“You lucky bastard!!” Dave shakes his head and starts to leave. “Ok I’m leaving. I hope you guys have fun tonight…make sure you bring all leftovers home.” Dave mockingly salutes the two of us, and heads out the door.
Finally, we’re alone.
“You look great!” Liz smiles and blushes slightly before kissing me again.
“Thank you. You don’t look so bad yourself and you smell great.” I chuckle at the memory that immediately springs to mind. I remember back home how I would beat her into the bathroom, because I knew that smell would drive her crazy. Liz continues to kiss me, arousing me, and causing me to get uncomfortable. While I enjoy kissing Liz, I want her too much her right now, so I know we have to stop. “Liz, we’re going to be late for dinner.”
“What if you were dinner?”
I groan aloud, knowing I can’t take much more of this. Gently, I push here away. “Ok, as much as I want that, and believe me I want that, you don’t. You told me you wanted to wait, and I don’t want you to do something you’ll end up regretting, so let’s not go down that road.” Her disappointment is evident. “Liz, I want you, more than you know, but once you go down that road…there’s no turning back. I know you want to wait, you always have. That’s one thing we’ve talked about…you wanting to wait, and I don’t want you to compromise that.” I put my hands on the side of her face and run my thumbs over her cheeks. “I love you, and I’m not going anywhere.” I kiss her lips and she pulls away.
“Thank you for loving me that much, Max. I love you too.” She hugs me tightly, holding me as close as she possibly can.
“Ok, now can we go to dinner? I’m starving.” Liz smiles and nods her head.
“Let’s go.”
We leave Liz’s apartment, and head straight to the park. When we get there, I grab the picnic basket from the car and we make our way through the crowd to find a place to sit. There are already people here to see the movie, but Liz doesn’t care…she sees the place she wants and goes for it.
I stretch out the blanket across the grass, and put the basket down. Once I’m finished, she sits down. She’s so beautiful. Even in jeans, a blouse, and sneakers, she’s radiant. She begins to unpack the food, and starts talking about work.
“You know, it would’ve been a lot easier if he’d just let me take the phone call instead of being such an ass! I mean, who does he think he is? Head of the science department?”
“Well, he is pretty important.” Liz looks at me like a predator about to pounce on its prey, before smiling at me, and throwing a napkin at me.
“Ok, point taken. He still doesn’t need to be such an ass.”
She’s talking about Professor Baker who really is a complete jerk. He’s only twenty-eight, and Liz is working under him. Sometimes it frustrates me, because I see the way he looks at her and how he treats her…it makes me want to smack him, but that’s not going to happen. Not if I want to keep my job. “I know, but he is…we just have to make the best of it.” Liz rolls her eyes in frustration, and then hands me a sandwich and a drink, and we begin to eat.
I think back over the last couple of weeks and all the dates we’ve been on. We’ve done the movie in the park thing every Friday night, which usually ends with her asleep in my arms, and her head resting on my chest. We’ve also been to Martha’s Vineyard, and up to New York City for sightseeing. We went to Assagio’s, a little Italian place that Liz found just off campus and fell in love with. We really do have a lot of fun together.
As the movie starts, I glance over at Liz. She already looks completely fascinated. I can’t help but think about how beautiful she is, and she just takes my breath away. While we’re watching the movie, she moves closer and closer. I remembered the big body pillow I brought, so I place it behind me and lean on the tree. She leans on me, and soon her breathing shallows out. I can tell she’s already asleep. I smooth her beautiful, long, brown hair and whisper in her ear. “I love you, Lizzybeth.” She stirs a little and moans.
“I love you too.” Instantly, she falls back asleep and I finish the movie.

Thanks everyone for your feedback...I love you all!!!
Ok so there is only one more chapter after this one and it is done...so it will probably be up sometime next week!!! Things are just hectic around here!!!
CHAPTER 25
LIZ POV
So here we are finally together and we’re staying in Boston for Thanksgiving. The Evans’s and the Valenti’s have decided to come here for the holiday, so I’m really excited! Isabel and Maria will be down tomorrow and everyone else is flying in on Wednesday. Kyle’s even bringing his new girlfriend. No one will tell us who she is, but they all really seem to be happy with her.
Just as I’m heading out the door to go shopping, the phone rings. I’m about to answer when it stops ringing. Oh no! Dave!
“Save the Saschuach…MAX!!! Dude, um momento!!!” Dave yells.
I place my hand on my forehead, and then shake my head.
“Liz, phone.”
I walk out and take the phone from Dave as I watch him rummage through my fridge. I realize now that the only way I’m going to keep him out of my refrigerator is to put on a dead bolt.
“Hey, baby.”
Just the sound of his voice brings a smile to my face. “Hey, Max. Did Iz give you the list of everything we need?”
“Yeah, she emailed it to me, then mom emailed me a list, and Amy did too. I was just heading out to get everything…did you want to go?”
“Of course.”
“Ok, give me about fifteen minutes.”
“Ok, see you then. Love you.”
“Ditto”
I hang up the phone, still smiling, and stare at Dave. “Dave, are you going home for Thanksgiving?” Suddenly, he stops rummaging through the fridge and puts everything back. He shuts the door and sits on the barstool with his head hung low. I look at him funny, wondering why he put everything back. Now he’s just sitting there, looking at his hands. “Dave, what’s wrong?”
He looks at me sadly, and in a quiet voice he tells me. “No, I’m not going home.”
“Why not?”
“Liz, do you know where I live?” I shake my head; I always assumed he was from Boston. “Liz, I’m from Oregon…I can’t afford to go home. I can’t afford to eat. I can’t afford to do anything…that’s why I’m always raiding your fridge.” He lowers his head again in shame.
Immediately, I walk over to him and wrap my arms around him. I never knew things were so bad for him, so my heart goes out to him. “Dave, my fridge is your fridge, and my family is your family, so on Thanksgiving you’re going with me and Max.”
His head shoots up quickly and he flashes me a smile. “Thanks, Liz.”
His smile is so kind and genuine, that it makes me smile back, feeling like I just did a good thing. “Ok, well you’re gonna have to let yourself out, because I have to go shopping.” Dave leans over and kisses my cheek as I grab my purse. “Have fun.” I smile again and head for Max’s apartment.
~*~*~*~*~
Max, oh what a cutie! He’s getting so sweet. Every Monday he brings me a white rose. He knows Mondays are my hell days. Those are the days I work in the Lab with the evil man. He’s such an ass. He thinks he’s God’s gift to all professors, and he asked Professor Gandy if I would be able to assist him on Mondays in the Lab. Personally, I think he has ulterior motives, as does Max, but we can’t prove it.
Since that night in the park, Max and I have kept up with date night. No matter how busy we are, we go out every Friday. Sometimes we just grab a quick bite to eat or hang out, but at least it’s something. Without any doubt I know I’ve found the man I want to spend forever with. I want to marry Max more than anything, and I don’t care if it’s before we finish school anymore. If he asked me tomorrow, I’d say yes.
I don’t really knock anymore, so when I get to the apartment I just walk in. Austin is there hanging out with Michael watching Saturday’s game. They both had to work, so they taped it. I walk over and sit down in between them “Who’s winning?”
“Vikings 17 to 3.” I reach over grab Michael’s soda and take a drink. “You’re welcome.” He elbows me and I smile at him. “You and Maxi going shopping?”
“Yeah, you know…the Nazi emailed her entire list.”
“The Nazi?” Austin asks, obviously clueless.
We both look at him and laugh, “Isabel’s the Nazi for all holidays. We used to joke that it was just Christmas, but then we realized it’s all holidays.”
“Remind me to stay away.” Austin comments.
I laugh at the expression currently on his face, and then Max comes out. He walks over behind me, so I lean back to kiss him.
“Who’s winning?”
“Vikings.”
“Aww, and I’m not staying?” I shoot him a look, and he smiles innocently, and then sticks his lip out to pout.
“No worries, Maxwell. It’s taped!”
“Cool! Well then we’re out of here. Come on, Lizzybeth, let’s go.”
I stand up and take his hand. “Boys, we’ll see you later.” I wave as we walk out and shut the door behind us.
When we get to the store, I take half the list, while Max takes the other half. We agree to meet at the front of the store in thirty minuets. I head off in my own direction and find most of my stuff in a hurry. The only thing I have to wait for is the turkey at the butchers. Isabel made it clear that it has to be perfect. Sometimes I wonder about that girl. Max passes by me looking frantically for his items. I try to stifle my laughter, but it’s no use, it’s too cute watching him stress. I remember being at home last Thanksgiving and having to do this…Max got the wrong type of cranberries and Isabel flew off the deep end. So to me, this is humorous!
When he’s finally done he comes up to me, and puts his arms around me. I lean into him and rest my head against his chest. “I could get used to this.” I whisper and he chuckles.
“I thought you were already used to it?”
“I meant like long term.”
“Aren’t we already long term?”
“Max, I mean like everyday. You know, going to bed at night and waking up in the morning…that kind of long term.” He looks at me wide eyed.
“You mean like move in together?”
“I don’t know…maybe.”
“I would love that, but it’s something you have to be ready for, Liz.” He doesn’t want to push me into things, even thought sometimes I know he wants to.
“Max, what if I am ready?” Max huffs in frustration and looks at me. “We can talk about this later.” The butcher hands me the turkey, so I put it in the cart and head toward the check out lane.
During the ride back to the apartment I don’t talk to Max, and the silence is uncomfortable. When we get there, we unload the car and see that the boys are still watching the game. I glance over at Max who’s already distracted by the game. “Go…I can do this.” While I’m putting the groceries away I feel the tears threaten to fall. I don’t even know why I feel like crying. Michael looks over at us, causing Max to turn back to face me.
“Are you sure?”
“GO MAX!” I scream at him.
“Liz…” He whispers to me, but I continue to put things away. Finally he leaves and joins the boys.
I let the tears fall down my cheeks, and then wipe them away with my sleeve. I can’t believe I’m actually crying about this. I catch Max looking back at me every now and then, but I don’t say anything.
When I’m done I walk over to where all the boys are seated. “Michael, I’m going to go. I’ll see you tomorrow when the girls get here.” Michael smiles up at me, and then Max looks up with tears in his eyes.
“Liz?” He whispers, but I’m not ready to deal with this right now, so I grab my stuff.
“Goodnight, boys.” They start to say something but I just head out not waiting to hear.
By the time I reach my own apartment, I feel like I’ve cried at least two rivers. I glance at my answering machine and see that I have two messages. I push the button and listen.
“Lizzybeth, call me…please?”
NO!!!
“Liz, it’s Maria, Max just called call me…”
Great! Now he gets her involved in everything? Uggh! I pick up the phone and call Maria back.
“Lizzy?” I don’t say anything, but continue to just cry. “Oh, Liz, why the tears?”
“I don’t even know, Maria…I’m just so frustrated.”
“Sexual tension? You want something that he doesn’t?”
“More like he wants it! I told him I wanted to wait, and now that I want it, he wants to wait.” I sigh in frustration. “What am I supposed to do?”
“Um…well see there’s this great invention called a telephone and you could call him and tell him to come over so you can talk. Geez, Liz! You both have this inability to talk when you’re mad at each other and it’s frustrating! Really frustrating, because then I get dragged into it. Come on, Liz…you’re almost nineteen years old, get with the program.”
Geez, could she be anymore blunt? I get it!
“Alright, I’ll call him.”
“Good, and have it fixed before tomorrow please. Now go…I love you.”
“Love you too. See you tomorrow.”
We both hang up the phone, and then I try to call Max. Much to my surprise, he’s already on his way over. When he gets to my apartment his eyes are red and I can tell he’s been crying too. Why, I don’t know? I open the door more for him to walk in, but instead he takes my hand, and we walk to our favorite spot.
“Liz, I’m sorry.”
“You don’t need to apologize, Max. I’m the one that should be apologizing to you. I was being stupid. You were just making a statement and I blew up. I’m sorry.”
“Liz, I do want to move in with you. I want to make love to you everyday, all day…I just want it to be at the right time, in the right way.” He pulls me to him and I collapse against him. I don’t remember anything else…all I remember is kissing him and waking up the next morning still wrapped up in his arms.
~*~*~*~*~
Thanksgiving morning has been hectic so far. Max spent the night last night, since he gave his room up to Kyle who brought none other than Tess for Thanksgiving. Apparently, he and Tess started dating right after Max left. It’s weird seeing our ex’s together, but in a way comforting.
I’m up and already boiling potatoes when I hear a knock on my door. I know it isn’t Dave or Max, because they would’ve just walked in. I wipe my hands on my apron and make my way to the door. Nothing could’ve prepared me for this moment; I open the door and find Tess standing there.
“Happy Thanksgiving, Liz.” She smiles at me, but I’m not sure whether to smile back or not. I’m not sure what I want to do. I decide to let her in, so I step aside and let her enter my apartment.
“Happy Thanksgiving, Tess.” I show her in and she sits on one of the barstools. I just stand at the counter for a minute before I’m able to find my voice again. “What brings you by?” I’m curious as to why she’s here. We’re not friends and last time I checked we couldn’t stand each other, so why is she in my apartment?
“I know that you and I didn’t exactly get along in high school, Liz.” That was an understatement! “Ok, so we hated each other. I was the bitch from hell to you, I was mean, and I plotted against you, and did horrible things. That’s why I’m here, I wanted to apologize. I know that I don’t deserve to be forgiven for the things I’ve done, but I would like it if we could be civil to each other. I want you to know that I don’t want Max, and I promise I won’t get in your way. I’m really happy with Kyle, and he’s a good guy. I just wanted to tell you that.” She got up from the barstool and started to walk out.
“Tess, wait,” she turns to face me and I notice how grown up she looks, “thank you. Thank you for saying that and doing this. I’m sorry too.”
She smiles at me before stepping out the door. “I’ll see you later, Liz.”
“Ok.” I watch her leave and for the first time in almost a year I feel good about her. I finally feel like she isn’t plotting against me, and I don’t have to worry about her anymore.
I finish making my mashed potatoes, and then head over to the apartment. Maria and Isabel are over there driving everyone else insane. I have Dave with me, and Diane has already fallen in love with him. I hear her tell him that he should come to Roswell and visit, and that anytime they’re here they are taking him to dinner. Max and I can tell that Dave has taken a liking to everyone, and everyone likes him.
We all sit down to eat, and as I watch my family and friends I realize that I couldn’t think of anyone or anywhere that I would rather be. I have love for all of them…even Tess. It’s because of her that I have grown up so much this year. Everyone eats and we all talk about school, and life, and everything we’ve all missed in our time apart. I look around the table happily and have a feeling that this isn’t the only dinner that will be spent in Boston.

CHAPTER 26
CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN…3 DAYS
Today is December 22nd and here I am standing in the Logan International Airport waiting with Michael for Isabel and Maria to arrive. Max and Alex decided to go with Philip and Diane to pick out Isabel’s Christmas presents, so we got stuck waiting at the airport to pick up the girls. Phillip and Diane are getting Isabel a car, so Max and Alex insisted on helping them pick it out.
Everyone is beginning to stress out about Christmas, since Isabel has already emailed her tree diagram to everyone, and called Max seven times. She’s made Max take pictures of each tree with my picture phone, and talk to the owner of the tree lot to make sure it’s the right tree. She had Diane ship all of the decorations to us when we found out that everyone would be spending Christmas in Boston. Apparently it’s a lot cheaper to buy two tickets than to buy four.
Ok, let me explain…Dave has now become a permanent fixture in the Evans family. Every since he spent Thanksgiving with us because his parents were going to California to see his sister, Diane has practically adopted him. So, they decided to come to Boston and spend Christmas with all of us. Then, with all of the festivities planned here, Alex and Michael refused to go home, but Hank and Alex’s mom decided to spend Christmas in Roswell instead of heading out this way. Finally, Amy, Jim, Kyle, and Tess decided to come to Boston too after Maria informed them she was not coming home without the Magnificent 6!
Which brings us back to the present moment…Michael and I are sitting here waiting for Isabel and Maria’s plane to land. Actually, Michael’s taking a nap, snoring loudly, so I have my head buried in my hands. A voice comes over the loud speaker and announces the flight has landed. I’m about to wake Michael up, but he looks so content napping that I decide to let him be. I make my way toward the gate and I’m completely ecstatic when they get off the plane. It feels like we haven’t seen each other in forever!
“Lizzy, I love your hair!” Isabel exclaims as she wraps her arms around me.
“Thanks,” I blush at the compliment because I’m not really used to them, “I just got it cut. Max was a little upset, but I like it short!”
“Who cares about my brother, he doesn’t have to style it.”
“Yeah, but he does have to run his hands through it.” Maria teases as she winks. She engulfs me in a massive hug, and then begins to look around. Her eyes finally find Michael asleep on the chairs, and she throws her hands in the air. “Unbelievable…you would think he could stay awake.”
I chuckle at Maria, but have to defend him. “Don’t be too hard on him, Maria. We kept him up all night playing Apples to Apples. He was losing so badly, and Dave just stomped him. It was hysterical!” Both of them begin to laugh, causing Michael to wake up.
“Nice nap?” He looks up at Maria and smiles. Within seconds, he’s on his feet wrapping his arms around her.
It’s funny to stand back and watch them. Maria seems to fit so perfectly in his arms, almost as if they were made for each other. They begin their sappy reunion, so Isabel and I head toward the baggage claim.
“So…you and Max move into together yet?”
I try to avoid the question, knowing the last couple weeks have been stressful on us both. “No, I really don’t think it’s gonna happen…I’m just no too sure.” Isabel sees the tears in my eyes, so she stops me.
“Liz, he loves you, and he wants this. He wouldn’t be with you if he didn’t. Trust me, you don’t need to worry about it. You two will have your happy ending.” She hugs me tightly and we finish gathering their baggage.
By the time the four of us get back to the apartment everyone else is standing at the counter with a full spread of food to make lunch with. Max and I had gone shopping the day before, so there was bread and several different kinds of lunchmeats for everyone to make sandwiches.
Max catches my eye and smiles at me. I smile back, and then make my way over to Dave who pulls me into his lap and whispers into my ear. “Parker…your boyfriend told me to tell you that half of your present is outside.”
I turn around to face Dave, and then look around for Max, but he’s already outside. Quickly, I slide off of Dave’s lap and make my way outside. When I open the door, Max is standing there on the balcony with his hands in his pocket. I close the door behind me and find that I’m freezing my ass off. “Max?”
He looks up and smiles at me with that irresistible smile I can never deny. “You up for a walk?”
I laugh because he has to be joking. It’s at least fifteen below outside. “You’re kidding, right?” Max doesn’t speak, but holds his gaze on me. “Ok…but if we’re going where I think we’re going…can we drive?”
A smile appears on his face, which is now red from the cold, and he shakes his head. “Yeah, we can.”
We head back inside to tell everyone we’re leaving, but we’ll be back soon. Every Christmas, Max and I do something called the 5 days of Christmas. Starting on the 20th we exchange a gift each day. It’s something we’ve done since I first went to live with the Evans family. The first Christmas it was twigs, and stuff we didn’t have to buy, but as we got older the presents got better. This year the presents have been extremely good. On the first day I got a spoon. Ok, I know what you’re thinking. A spoon? Why in the hell would Max give me a spoon? Well, there’s a very good explanation. On our very first official date as a couple, we went to a restaurant and for dessert we shared some ice cream. Max saved that spoon and gave it to me. I thought it was sweet.
On the second day, he gave me ice skates. My last pair was worn out and I really wanted a new pair, so he bought them for me.
Now, we’re on day three. Whenever we want something to be special and memorable, we go to our special place, and today is no different. It’s too cold to be here, but we’re both bundled up, so we make the best of it. Max sits there for a minute, knowing the wait is driving me nuts, and then pulls a box out of his pocket. “Merry 22nd.”
I smile and pull my gloves off. Gently, I take the box, and open the lid. Inside is a simple silver ring. A little unsure, I reach into the box and pull the ring out. After a moment I recognize it. It’s the one from the Cracker Jack box from four years ago. I look up at him confused. “You kept this?”
“Yeah, I did. I wanted to wait for the perfect time to give it to you.” I look at him with tears in my eyes, and he urges me to go on. “Look inside.” I look inside the ring and see the inscription.
You are my forever and always. I love you…Max
I’m crying now, since so far this is the best present I’ve received. “I love it…thank you.” Still crying, I kiss him and pull him close. When I pull away I take the card out of my pocket and hand it to him.
“I think I’ll save this for later.” I nod and he takes my hand. He slips the ring on my finger and pulls me to my feet. “Let’s get out of here, Lizzybeth, before we freeze.”
That night we all go to dinner together, and then come back to hang out. We tried to play Apples to Apples again, but Dave always seems to win. He knows way too many things, plus he has a dirty mind, which makes it impossible to beat him. After a while, we switched to board games. We played Life, but there were just a few of us playing. Of course I had to land on all the kid spaces, so my car was completely full. Everyone got a laugh out of it.
Everyone started to fall asleep, so we called it a night. After I got home, Max called me and we talked for hours until neither one of us could stay awake any longer.
~*~*~*~*~
CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN…2 DAYS
I woke up to find myself missing my parents. Lately, I seem to be missing my mom the most. I can’t remember what she smelt like, or what she looked like, or the way her hair always fell around her face. Then there’s my dad…I can’t remember the way my dad would bounce me on his knee, or how his voice sounded. For the first time in a long time, the only thing I want is my parents. I can’t help the way I feel inside, so I just continue to cry, unable to stop the wave of emotions pounding against me.
At eleven o’ clock when Isabel comes in I still haven’t gotten out of bed. I’m just lying there, so she comes over to the bed and sits down. I look at her, the tears evident in my eyes, and she holds me while I cry.
“Liz, what’s wrong?” She asks gently.
“I want my mom.” I know it sounds childish, but it’s what I want. Isabel nods in understanding and continues to hold me while I cry. When I finally calm down, she gets up and hands me my towel.
“Go on…we have shopping to do.” I smile at her, realizing I’ve yet to finish buying all my Christmas presents, and I still need to get something for Kyle and Tess.
After I get ready I look on my machine and see there are five messages on my voice mail. All of them are from Max, wondering if I was ok, and telling me to call him. I finally do, but I tell him a little fib. I tell him I slept late and that I will explain everything later.
When we reach the mall, Isabel and Maria waste no time on their shopping spree. I follow along, still a little depressed, and by lunchtime all of our hands are full with bags. We meet Diane and Philip for lunch, but while the girls are all talking Philip takes my hand.
“Let’s go walk around.” Phillip tells them all we’ll be back soon, and we start to walk around. “You know, Liz…I never thought I would be the one to raise you.” I look up at him and he gestures for me to sit on a bench, so we both take a seat. “When your dad and I were growing up we were the best of friends. We always told people we met in college, but that was a lie. Actually, we grew up together. Your Grandma Claudia helped raise me. Grandma and Grandpa Evans were gone a lot, so I stayed with your dad most of the time. When we got older we went away to college, and almost immediately your dad met your mom. Soon, I met Diane and we were both madly in love. Your dad married your mom and they had you right away. You were so beautiful, Liz. Diane and I enjoyed spoiling you. It wasn’t too long after you were born that we found out we couldn’t have children of our own. Your dad and I had always dreamed of watching our kids grow up together, but that dream was gone. That’s when your dad asked us to be your godparents and we accepted. Then, we found Max and Isabel and our lives were finally complete. It never occurred to me that we would ever end up raising my best friend’s daughter.”
“It’s ok, Phillip.”
He stopped talking for a minute and put his head down. I placed a hand on his shoulder, and he looked back up to meet my eyes. “Liz, I miss him so much. I still talk to him and tell him that I hope I have raised his daughter the way he would’ve wanted. You know, when we first adopted Max we used to joke about you two dating and getting married.” I smile at his confession. “Now maybe that will happen.” He smiles with tears in his eyes. “I hope I’ve been enough for you, Liz. I know I’m not your dad, but I hope Diane and I gave you enough.”
In that moment it becomes clear that I’m not the only one who misses them. “Thank you for taking me in, and loving me, and being my dad.” I hug him close and feel a sense of peace. I know that I’ll never forget my father, but for all extensive purposes this is my dad, and the man who raised me. “I love you, Philip.”
He smiles and takes my hand. “I love you too, Elizabeth. Oh, and for the record…I’m glad he left you to us.”
“For the record…I am too.”
We head back toward the food court and find the girls still in the same conversation. Phillip announces he’s ready to go, so everyone grabs their bags. Diane takes my hand and walks along with me.
“You ok, baby?” She asks me in her sweetest, motherly voice.
“Yeah, I was really missing my mom and dad this morning, but then I realized I have my mom and dad right here.” She stops walking and looks at me. “I mean, I’ll always love my mom and dad, and they’ll always be a part of me, but you and Philip have raised me. So, you’re just as much my parents as they are.” I can see the tears glistening in Diane’s eyes as she pulls me to her.
“I love you, baby.”
“I love you too.”
We start to walk again, but then I realize I haven’t gotten anything for Kyle or Tess for Christmas. I excuse myself and run back to the hallmark store. I begin to look around, but can’t find anything I like. I’m still looking and starting to get frustrated, when I come across something perfect. I purchase it and make my way back to car.
When we get to Max’s apartment, I find him pacing. The moment he sees me, he runs over to me and hugs me. A little surprised by his actions, I look at him “Are you ok?”
“I was worried…are you ok?”
“I’m fine.” I answer softly, not really wanting to rehash everything right now. I’m feeling better and want to stay that way. Somehow, Max understands this without a single word spoken between us. Instead he takes my hand and leads me to the bedroom. Once we’re finally alone, he reaches out and hands me a small garment box. Not really sure what to say, I just look up at him and smile.
“Happy 23rd!” he says eagerly.
Slowly, I begin to tear at the wrapping paper until it’s all gone and only the box remains. I open the lid and there it is in a pewter picture frame! It’s a picture of my parents and me. Through my tears I look up at Max who looks extremely proud of himself. “Where did you get this?”
“My parents had it…it was the picture you had taken with them the day before they died. It was in their camera…I asked my mom for it, so she gave it to me.” Without any hesitation I pull him closer to me and gently place my lips against his. It’s not a passionate kiss, but a meaningful one. “Thank you, Max…thank you so much.” I realize I’ve forgotten his present at my apartment, so I look up at him biting my lip.
“I know you left it, it’s ok. I’ll get it tomorrow.” He pulls me close again and I enjoy the wonderful feeling of being held in his arms.
“Thank you, Max, for everything. I love you so much.” He kisses me again with a smile on his face. “Spend the night with me, Max?” We haven’t discussed this for a while, but the moment feels so right that I take a chance.
For a brief moment his expression is unreadable, causing me to question what I just said, but then he smiles a warm smile and takes my hand. “I thought you would never ask.”
We finally reach my apartment, each of us fighting back the urge to remove the other’s clothing, but unfortunately the moment is spoiled when we see Dave rummaging through the refrigerator.
“Dave, dude what are you doing?” Max asks, obviously frustrated.
Dave jumps a little and then smiles. “I have a surprise for Liz.” He takes my hand, so reluctantly I let go of Max. He pulls me over to the fridge and smiles widely before pulling the door open. I can’t believe what I’m seeing, my fridge is completely full! I look up at Dave with a questioning look in my eyes. “Well, since I couldn’t fill it Christmas morning because I knew you would see me…I did it now! So here it is, and Merry Christmas.”
I’m in shock that he’s spent what little money he had stocking my fridge. To many people it may not seem like much, but knowing what I do about Dave, it means the world. I wrap my arms around him and whisper in his ear. “It’s always open.”
He smiles back at me and shakes Max’s hand. “You got a good one, Maxamillion…don’t let her go or I might have to steal her.” He winks a few times and then starts to leave. “Yeah, you have a good one…are you going to let her go?”
Max has a hold of my waist as I move toward the bedroom. He looks over his shoulder at Dave and laughs. “Not any time soon…in fact I was thinking of something more…permanent.” Dave smiles and walks out the door. Before I can say anything Max has lips on mine. His hands roam freely over my body as my hands reach out to explore his. In that moment I can think of nothing else but Max and how much I want him. Then, I come back to reality and realize that I’m just not ready for this. I pull away expecting Max to be angry with me, but he seems to understand.
I try to gather myself and walk over to my dresser. Max’s present is in the top drawer, so I pull out the box and hand it to him. “Here…Happy 23rd.”
Max smiles easily and begins to unwrap it. When he opens it, he sees a metal guitar pick. “Where did you get this?”
His surprise is obvious, which makes me smile. “I have my ways.” I watch him as he picks it up and stares at it. “It’s even signed.” I point to the back. It’s a metal pick from the Dave Matthews Band and I know he’s excited about it. Yes it’s lame that I know this about him, but I do. He’s always been really into the band.
“Thanks, Lizzybeth.”
“You’re welcome.”
He pulls me down onto the bed, and wraps his arms around my waste. I feel so safe like this. I know he wants more, I want it too, but I’m not sure that I’m ready for it. With sex comes a lot of responsibilities, and I know right now I’m not ready for them. He pulls me closer and the last thing I remember is him kissing my neck and telling me he loves me.

CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN…1 DAY…December 24th
Today it’s Christmas! I let out a yawn and stretch before opening my eyes, and then I smile. I can smell eggs and bacon, but as I open my eyes I notice my bed is empty. I had hoped to wake up next to Max, but he’s not here. Slowly, I climb out of bed, stretching again in an attempt to wake up, and head toward the living room. My apartment’s been kind of lonely for the last two weeks since my roommates left for Christmas break, but this morning isn’t so lonely. Everyone is already here, including Dave. Diane and Amy are in the kitchen making breakfast, but the guys are nowhere to be seen. Automatically I assume they’re across the hall, except for Dave who is happily sandwiched between Isabel and Maria looking though books and watching cartoons on TV. I stand there smiling at them for a minute until I feel a pair of eyes on me. I look toward the kitchen and see Amy watching me.
“Morning, Glory.” She teases and I smile in return at her, Diane, and Tess. “Breakfast will be ready in a little while. Are you hungry?”
I nod and walk into the kitchen to pour myself some juice, but Tess has already poured it for me. “Thanks, Tess.” I say smiling. It’s nice to no longer have to view her as the enemy.
“You’re welcome.”
“Baby, did you sleep well?” Diane asks as she pulls me in for a quick hug.
“Yeah I did…are the guys across the hall?” They all laugh together, but I have no clue what’s so funny.
“Yes, Jim, Kyle, Max, Michael, Alex, and Phillip have all migrated across the hall to play with Austin. They’re playing with the X-Box so I’m not sure when we’ll see them again.
I laugh, because Austin’s X-Box has been the hit of the hall since the moment he got it. People adore that thing. “I’ll bet Alex is trying to tell them what to do and how to do it.”
“You mean he’s CHEATING!!” Isabel screams. I look over and see that both doors are open.
“I AM NOT!!!” Alex shoots back.
“Whatever…he is so cheating.” Isabel says, and then turns back to watching Thunder Cats.
I chuckle and look back at the three women in the kitchen. Those three women have shaped my life. Diane gave me a home to live in and has been my mother for the last eleven years. Amy has also been a surrogate parent…in the way that you have your best friend’s mom who is always the cool one!! And then there’s Tess. She’s the one who tortured me, fought with me, and shaped the way I took people in, yet in this moment there is nothing but love for all of those women. All that I feel is love.
After breakfast, everyone mentions they have last minute shopping to do, so we all agree to meet back at the boy’s house before going to Midnight services. Max takes off with Michael, Alex, and Kyle saying that he still has one more present to get. Isabel and Maria immediately take off for the mall. I’m almost jealous that my two best friends are so close, but when you live with people you develop a relationship with them. If my roommates were here, I’d probably be out with them.
Amy, Diane, Jim, and Philip went shopping as well, leaving me alone with Tess. It’s awkward at first, but after a few minutes she speaks. “Hey, Liz…I have to go shopping for some last minute gifts too…do you want to come with me?”
“I would love to.”
I throw on some clothes and head out the door. I thought it would be fun to show her the city, so I take her around Boston and show her all the sights. We end up on campus, so I show her all the different surroundings. It’s actually kind of fun and we’re having a great time. We finally head for the mall since she still hasn’t bought anything for Kyle.
We walk around for a little while, debating on a hundred different gifts, when she finally decides she wants to get Kyle a watch. We find the jewelry store and are about to go in when I spot Max and the boys at one of the counters inside. We walk in and stop at the counter opposite from them. I nudge Tess with my elbow, and when she looks at me I gesture toward the boys. When she sees them too she keeps her head down. Finally, a salesman walks in our direction.
“What do we do, Liz?”
“Pretend like you don’t see them.” The jeweler stares at us for a minute, looking at us like we’re on drugs, and then asks us if we need help.
“Yes, we’d like to see some watches.” Tess says quietly.
I elbow her in the side again, and speak up. “No, we’d like to look at all of the bracelets you have.” The salesman looks confused, so he just continues to stare. Even Tess is looking at me like I’m on crack.
“What? Why bracelets?”
“Because if the guys see us buying a watch, then either Max or Kyle is going to assume it’s for them. But, if we’re looking at bracelets then we must be shopping for a woman.” I know I am so smart!!!
The man brings over a few bracelets for us to see, but notices I keep looking at the boys. “Do you know them?”
I shake my head yes, and then go sticking my nose where it doesn’t belong. “What are they buying?”
“I’m assuming jewelry.” He responds in a snotty tone.
You think? What an ass! “Yeah, that would probably be it.” I say sarcastically.
Suddenly, the boys turn around and Max spots me. I see him get a little nervous and turn around to the other three to say something. Quickly, I turn away, but it’s too late. Max strolls over to where Tess and I are standing with Kyle not far behind. I’m dreading this! Why you ask? Because I don’t have the faintest idea why he’s in here, and now I’ve been caught in a jewelry store. Max knows me too well, so he’s going to see right through whatever lie I try to tell him.
“Hey, girls!” He leans over and kisses my cheek.
“Hey there…fancy meeting you boys here.” Tess says as she and Kyle kiss.
“Yeah, what are you two doing here?” Max asks closely watching as I respond.
“We’re here for Isabel. We had to find a gift, my gift.” I stumble out and Max looks at me funny.
“Didn’t we get that last week?”
Oh shit I forgot! “Yes we did, but you know…I just didn’t like it. Tess, Kyle, can you excuse us for a second?” They both shake their heads and continue kissing while I pull Max aside. “Ok look…Tess had to get Kyle a present and she doesn’t want him to know. Now get yourself and him out of here.” I look at him with pleading eyes, so he smiles and shakes his head.
“Alright…I’ll get him out of here.” He kisses me again, and we head back over to Tess and Kyle. “Come on, Kyle. I still have a few presents to get.” Kyle kisses Tess and then they head out the door.
I sigh in relief, but then notice the jeweler is still staring at me. “What? Can we see the watches?” He shakes his head and takes them out. Tess looks around and finally finds the one she wants. She tells the salesman she wants T&K engraved on the inside, but it will take about two hours, so we decide to do some more shopping.
We walk around for a while and run into everyone. “Anyone up for ice cream? The Marble Slab is so good here.” Isabel says.
I look at her in shock. This coming from the girl who said just yesterday that she wasn’t going to eat because she had to fit into her Christmas dress. Ok!!!
We all order and find seats in the food court. No one discusses anything in particular, just regular stuff that makes no sense.
“So, Max, did you find what you were looking for?” Dave asks, and then flies up out of his seat screaming. “OUCH! What was that for?” He’s rubbing his leg, so I know someone kicked him. “Did you find the card for your mom?” He asks again, trying his best to change the subject, while still rubbing his wound.
I try not to laugh, because now I know Max has been here shopping for me. The funny thing is, I wouldn’t have known or been suspicious if no one had kicked him. Finally, everyone bursts out laughing together, except poor Dave.
After everyone finishes their ice cream, we all part ways again. I say goodbye to Max, and tell him we’ll see him back at my apartment. He agrees and tells me he’ll meet me at seven since it’s already four o’ clock. Wow time flies! I take Tess back to the jewelry store to pick up the watch for Kyle, and then I take her back to Max’s apartment.
When I finally get back to my own apartment, I realize I have a few hours before Max will be here, so I decide to take a nap. The next thing I know is that I feel a hard body next to me, snuggling. Then, I feel kisses on my neck and the heat from his breath. I can’t help but be turned on by this…I know I’m not dreaming…he’s really here. I turn to face him and when I open my eyes I find him staring at me.
“Did you have a nice nap?” I moan and bury my face in his shirt.
“What time is it?”
“It’s 7:30. I didn’t have the heart to wake you when I got here, so I watched you sleep.” I smile up at him…this is the proper way to wake up! “I have a present for you.” He sits up and pulls me with him. Then, he hands me a small box. It isn’t wrapped, but there’s a bow on top.
I smile widely as I open the box, but gasp when I see the beautiful necklace made of pearls. “Max, this is too much.”
“No, it isn’t…not for you.” He takes the box from me and puts it on me. I have never really thought of myself as a pearl person, but I love these. “I love them, thank you.” I kiss him, and then lean over him to retrieve a box out of my top drawer.
“Liz…” He takes the box from my hand, and begins to open it. He lifts the lid, looks up at me, and smiles. Carefully he pulls out the small, sterling silver ID bracelet inside. “It’s great…thank you.”
“Wait, you have to read the back.”
He smiles again and flips it over. When he sees the inscription tears form in his eyes.
You are my forever and always…Liz
“It says the same thing…” He stops speaking as he continues to stare down at it.
“What can I say…great minds think alike.” I’d known the inscription would get to him, but I’m not used to seeing tears in his eyes.
“I love it…thank you, Liz.” He pulls me close and places his lips on mine. We spend the next hour kissing and fooling around, until the phone rings.
“Hello.” For once I’m sad that Dave didn’t answer my phone.
“Liz? Hey are you guys gonna come over or not?” It’s Michael and he sounds annoyed, causing max and I both to laugh.
“Yes, Michael…I’m getting ready right now…we’ll be there soon.”
“Well try not to take forever please!!”
When I hear the dial tone I hang up the phone. Instantly, goes back to attacking my neck. “Max, I have to get ready.”
“What’s your point?” He mumbles with his mouth still running up and down my neck.
I laugh, but I’m actually in ecstasy! He’s driving me crazy. “That we’re going to be late.”
“Would that be so bad?” He looks up at me with a devilish grin, and then lowers his head to my neck again.
I close my eyes and let the feeling take me over. I moan as his hands roam down my body. When he looks up at me I gaze into his eyes, and gently bring his ear down to my mouth. “Tonight.” I whisper.
He raises his head up, eyes wide, and desperately trying to find his voice. “Are…well, are you sure? You know you don’t have to…”
I place a finger on his lips and smile. “Shh.” I nod and move from underneath him to start getting ready.
When I’m finally finished getting ready I walk out into the living room. Max is sitting there, watching that movie that’s on every year about the boy wanting the gun! After he senses my presence, he looks up at me and his mouth opens. “Wow…you look...um…great.”
I love it when he’s tongue-tied! “Thank you.” I lean down a kiss him and pull away quickly before he gets any ideas. “We need to go.” I take his hand, pulling him to his feet, and we head out the door.
We walk into his apartment, and he goes to his bedroom to change. Isabel and Maria have already been to my apartment and changed while I was asleep. Kyle and Tess are ready and Alex and Michael are playing X-Box with Austin until we arrive. Everyone seems to be waiting on me and Max, which was probably not a good thing.
“You two took long enough.” Maria huffs.
“Sorry,” I mumble, trying to think of a good excuse, “I couldn’t figure out how to fix my hair.”
Kyle laughs. “Liz, it’s short. How many ways could there possibly be to do it?” I shoot him a death glare, causing him to gulp.
“Ok, for your information she has to have body and bounce, and it has to have the back up, which takes time…we understand.” Isabel tells him in my defense. I knew she would understand!
When Max finally comes out he takes his spot next to me, with his arm naturally slipping around my waist. He looks so handsome right now…he has on a black shirt, black slacks, and a silver tie that compliments the black nicely.
Everyone finally joins together in the living room, dressed and ready to go, so it’s time to leave. “Well,” Phillip starts as he looks around the room, “looks like we’re going to have to take all the cars. Shall we?” He holds out his arm in a romantic gesture and Diane smiles as she slips her arm through. We all pile into the cars and head toward the church.
The church is completely packed once we arrive. We all climb out of the vehicles, but Max hesitates. He doesn’t believe in God; he hasn’t since we were little. He doesn’t pray and he doesn’t like going to church, so it surprised me when he chose to even go to the service tonight.
“Max…you don’t have to go in.” I tell him, while linking my fingers with his. “I’ll stay here with you.”
He smiles at me, obviously touched by my offer, and then squeezes my hand. “No, I want to.”
Everyone looks back to see if we’re coming, so we follow them inside. They’ve saved us a spot and we sit down. Max is looking around, taking everything in, and looking slightly overwhelmed, but he smiles in my direction and winks. I’m really missing my parents right now, and I know he can tell.
“I’m here, Max. I’ll always be here.”
He kisses my hand and runs the back of his fingers down my cheek. “I believe in you, Liz.”
While I do miss my parents and probably always will, I know now how truly blessed my life is. I have my friends, I have a family, and I finally have the love of my life. As the service starts, I’m filled with more love than I know what to do with.
When we get back to my apartment I take Max’s hand and pull him along with me. Maria and Isabel aren’t too far behind us, so as we disappear into my room they call out to us.
“Goodnight, love birds!”
Already caught up in the moment, we ignore them. Max raises a hand and pulls off my scarf and coat and throws them on my chair. “You are so beautiful.” He whispers. Unable to resist any longer, I kiss him and he takes my hands in his. “Are you sure you want to do this, Liz? I can wait.” His voice is so soft and sincere, which makes my heart melt even more.
“I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.” I assure him.
I can tell he’s anxious now, but he takes his time as he unbuttons my shirt and slides it down my shoulders. With shaky hands, I reach up and take off his tie and then his shirt. He kisses me softly, making sure not to rush the moment, as he moves me to the bed and finishes undressing me. Understanding how nervous I am, he removes my clothing and then undresses himself. I’m totally in awe, taking on the sight of his whole body. He’s beautiful, more beautiful than I ever imagined. He climbs into bed with me, and gazes into my eyes. At that moment he connects with me, filling me with his love.
Tenderly, he kisses along my neck as we make love with a slight glow from the moonlight streaming in through the window. My doubts, my fears, and all of my insecurities are washed away as we move together in a fluid rhythm. Max quickens his pace at the same moment I start to feel my orgasm consume me. As we reach our crest together I know we are no longer Max and Liz, but are now one. We’re together, and I know it’s forever.
“Merry Christmas, Liz…I love you.” He says panting, still trying to catch his breath.
“Merry Christmas, Max…I love you.” I’ve never been happier in my life.

CHRISTMAS DAY…December 25th
I wake up, entangled in Max’s arms, and smile at the memory of the night before. It was more perfect than I had imagined it would be. I don’t want to move since I’m completely content for the first time in my life, but I know everyone is expecting us at Max’s apartment by eight. I raise my head just enough to see the clock, which reads 7:00 am. I nudge Max, but he pulls the pillow over his head and moans. “Get up, sleepy head, we only have an hour.”
“No.” He moans as he pulls me closer, burying his head in my neck. I can feel his kisses on my neck making me even more reluctant to move. A moment later, I feel him pull away and I watch as he moves around my room. He pulls on his clothes, with a pout on his face, and heads to my bathroom. Soon I hear the water going, but I continue to lay on the bed thinking about last night. Nothing could have prepared me for that experience, but nothing could’ve been better.
After a few minutes he retreats from the bathroom and I take my turn. I look at myself in the mirror and realize the change in myself. I’m no longer the Liz Parker who was afraid of letting Max in; I’m the Liz Parker who’s in love.
Things are in full swing by the time we reach Max’s apartment. Isabel already has the tree up and decorated, and breakfast is almost ready. I make my way to the kitchen to see if anything needs to be done, but am shewd out as quickly as I entered. I go over to where the guys are watching the game and sandwich myself between Max and Michael, resting my head against Max’s chest.
After breakfast, everyone gathers around the tree to open presents. We ‘re going in a circle, opening one at a time, so everyone can see. Wrapping paper is flying and there are bows everywhere. There are present piles, paper piles, and bow piles covering the floor. It’s absolute chaos! Finally, we’re down to the last presents, which in this family are reserved for the couples; Jim and Amy, Diane and Philip, Michael and Maria, Alex and Izzy, Kyle and Tess, and me and Max. Only Dave is left, but he has one present left from all of us.
I shut the world out around me and open my final gift from Max. I open the box and am confused when I find a key. I look at Max with questioning eyes, and he takes my hand. The room has gone silent. Everyone else seems to understand and follows us. Together we all walk four apartments down and stop in front of a door. My heart races the moment everything suddenly becomes clear. I look at Max, and then at the key. Max smiles at me and shakes his head. I take the key and carefully put it in the lock. I stop for just a moment and turn to look at everyone waiting in anticipation.
“Liz, if you don’t open that damn door I will.” Michael blurts out, causing me to laugh.
I unlock the door and step inside. It’s a furnished apartment with a large banner hanging across the living room. It says:
Welcome home Max and Liz
Still in shock, I look at Max with tears in my eyes. We have an apartment! Together!!!
“So…will you move in with me?” I shake my head and leap into his arms, covering his face with kisses! There’s a loud roar around us as our friends and family clap and cheer.
“Come on, we can look around later…we still have to give Dave his present.” Max whispers in my ear.
Then it hits me…Dave will be able to raid my fridge and I’m totally at peace, because for two seconds I had forgotten what we gave Dave for Christmas. I stop Max in the hallway and take his hands in mine. “Thank you for loving me, and for taking your time with me. I love you, Max. This is the best Christmas present ever.”
Max pulls me close and kisses the top of my head. “You are the best thing in my life, Lizzybeth. I love you so much. You never gave up on me, and you always believed in me no matter what. Thank you for giving me your heart, and for giving me you. I love you.” I kiss him and hold him tight, never wanting to let go.
“And we thought that essay was pointless.” Alex says, bringing me out of my own little world.
“Never pointless, Alex…it had a point.” Max says, smiling down at me.
Dave is sitting in the living room, happy for us, but frowning. “I’ll just have to come raid your fridge over here then.”
We all look at each other and then at Dave. “No, that won't do.” I state and he looks up at us sadly.
“Dave…we’re going to need an extra roommate now that Max is gone, and well the rent is free so what do you say?” Michael says plainly.
Dave looks up at each of us with tears in his eyes. “You did this for me?” We all shake our heads and smile at him. “Thank you.” He whispers.
Diane gives him a hug and we all file in after her. He’s part of this family now, my family, and no matter what happens we’re linked. All because I wrote an essay about a boy that changed my life forever!
