Part 10

A week later, everything was confirmed. The offer on the house had been accepted and the Parkers were moving to Roswell. So now, at the top of their priority list was sorting out what would have to happen with Zan’s treatment.

“So we’ve decided to move to Roswell.” Nancy Parker finished telling Dr. Watson the story about the two families and their recent trip to Roswell. John was over the moon that Zan’s twin had agreed to donate his bone marrow and was keen to get started straight away.

“Ok,” he said. “Roswell’s been lucky enough to receive a huge grant to set up an oncology unit in their hospital. In fact, as soon as they’re up and running, most treatment for this area will also be conducted there,” he informed them.

“So Zan will be able to have the treatment in Roswell then?” Liz asked hopefully.

“It shouldn’t be a problem,” Dr. Watson told them. “I’ll give them a call and start setting some things up. I’ll continue to be Zan’s doctor though,” he said.

“Really?” Zan asked. “That’s great,” he told him. He had been with Dr. Watson since he was diagnosed and he trusted him, so it made him feel a little better knowing he would be in good hands.

“Yep, eventually most of my work will be there anyway,” he told him.

The Parkers thanked John before leaving and also promised that they would give Max the details and ask him to get into contact with the doctor about scheduling some appointments.

***

A month later, the Parkers were moving into their new house with the help of the entire Evans family as well as Alex, who had been roped into helping by Isabel.

“This is so great,” Serena told Liz as she helped her unpack the boxes in her room. Liz’s room was directly across from Max’s, so when she looked out her window she could see inside his room. Zan’s was the same with Isabel.

“I know,” Liz agreed. It hadn’t been hard to leave her school in Albuquerque. With the exception of a few teachers and acquaintances, Liz hadn’t even bothered saying goodbye. They were on summer break now from school and Zan would be starting treatment in a few weeks.

So far Max had to go into the hospital once a week to have some blood removed in case it was needed after the transplant but other than that everything was going fine. The Evanses had met with Dr. Watson as well and he had explained everything that would happen with the procedure and Liz had given Isabel some stuff to read to ease her mind as well.

“I’m so excited that you’re here,” Serena told Liz. Having Liz, Nancy and Jeff close by meant so much to her. In fact, it had done a lot to help improve her relationship with the Evans family. She now knew where she stood in the family and for the first time she felt like a real member of a family, and now she had two families.

“I know but when school goes back at the end of summer there are going to be a lot of people asking a lot of questions, you know?” Liz reminded her. In the past month Liz had talked to Serena nearly every night. They talked about a lot of stuff including the fact that Serena didn’t really like the person she was. She told Liz that although she had a lot of friends that Liz was the only person she felt that she could confide in. So Liz hoped that Serena would feel more comfortable with letting people in and making friends. She figured that they could make new friends together since she didn’t have any either.

“Yep, I know,” Serena said. “So you and Max have been talking a lot,” she smiled at her sister. Serena knew that Max had a thing for Liz even if Liz hadn’t figured it out yet. At first she had thought it was strange since Liz was her sister but then she realised that her and Liz were completely different people just like Max and Zan were it didn’t worry her so much anymore.

Serena was also sure that Zan wasn’t oblivious to Max’s little thing either.

Liz turned her face so that Serena couldn’t see the blush she knew was covering her cheeks. Most nights after talking to Serena, Liz would talk to Max. She loved hearing his funny stories about things Maria or Michael had done and they talked a lot about Zan’s treatment. He was becoming a fast friend and she was fascinated with how different Max was compared to her brother.

“Yeah,” Liz replied. “It’s good getting to know everyone,” she told her.

Serena was going to continue teasing her sister but Max and Zan walked into the room carrying more boxes for Liz.

“Where do you want these, munchkin?” Zan asked.

“Oh, just anywhere,” Liz said. It didn’t really matter much because the room was a mess.

“Why do you call her munchkin?” Serena found herself asking.

Zan looked at her surprised. “Um, I have since we were little, I guess. I’ve always teased her about her height,” he smiled.

“Oh,” Serena chuckled.

“Don’t tell me you don’t know what I’m talking about, shortie?” he grinned.

“Hey,” Serena cried. “Don’t call me that,” she demanded.

“Nah, it’s not ‘shortie,’ Zan,” Max spoke up.

“Maxwell Phillip Evans, don’t you dare!” Serena yelled, jumping up and trying to place her hand over Max’s mouth to stop him from telling Zan and Liz her childhood nickname.

“Oh what is it?” Zan asked excitedly.

“Midget,” Max finally said after avoiding Serena’s hand.

Zan immediately burst out laughing and even Liz giggled a little which copped her a horrified look from Serena.

“What?” Liz said. “At least they still don’t call you that,” she said referring to the fact that even at 17, Zan was still calling her munchkin.

“I’ll get you back for that,” Serena told Max sending him a pointed look and then letting her eyes wander to Liz.

Max’s eyes grew wide as he looked at Serena in alarm. There were a million things that she could possibly tell Liz and right now he wasn’t sure what one would be worse.

“Come on, Zan, let’s get the last of those boxes.” Max rushed out before pulling his brother out of the room leaving Serena and Liz to continue the unpacking.

***

Two days later the Parkers finally had the house in some sort of order. All the boxes were unpacked and the furniture in place.

“Thank God that’s done,” Zan moaned collapsing on Liz’s bed next to her.

“Yeah I know what you mean,” she agreed. Who knew she had so much crap. You would think they would be used to moving by now but it never got any better, or easier for that matter.

The next day, Max and Zan were going into hospital. Zan would start a very high dose of chemotherapy while Max would have a hole drilled into his hipbone to have the bone marrow removed. Both of the twins were nervous but were doing a good job at hiding it.

“So tomorrow,” Liz started. “I’m not going to leave your sight, ok?” she assured him.

Zan laughed. “It’ll be fine, ok? I’m more worried about Max,” he said.

Liz was worried about both of them but for very different reasons.

“You’ll both be fine,” she said.

“Come on,” he said pulling her up. They were going to the Crashdown with Max, Isabel, and Serena to meet the rest of the gang. At first Serena wasn’t going to go but Liz wouldn’t take no for an answer and now she was coming. Zan had already met Alex but he would meet Michael and Maria this afternoon and someone called Kyle.

“We better head next door or we’ll be late,” he told her. They would be riding with Max in the jeep. Max was the only of the Evans siblings that had a car because he worked. The jeep was bought for the three of them but because Max was the one who put petrol in it and kept it roadworthy it was his most of the time.

Liz and Zan had never had a car but they had already started talking to their parents about getting them something to go to school in, especially since Zan couldn’t really walk to school or anything.

“Get moving, you two,” Isabel called out. She hated being late and she couldn’t wait to see Alex.

Zan helped Liz into the back seat of the jeep next to Serena before jumping in himself and secretly wondered how long he would feel well enough to do that. Chemo took a lot out of him and he hated the fact that he had to start it again even though in the end it would be better for him long term. This time around it would be a higher dose, which would kill his stem cells, and own bone marrow, which is why he needed the transplant from Max.

“Let’s go,” he said once he was settled.

When they reached the Crashdown everyone else was already there. They had pulled another table up to the booth for the others.

“Hi everyone,” Max and Isabel greeted whilst Zan, Liz and Serena trailed a little nervously behind.

“Hi,” they all replied.

“Holy shit,” Kyle said when he caught sight of Zan and Liz. The others had told him about the mixed up twin thing but he never expected Zan to look exactly like Max or for Liz to be so hot.

“Kyle!” Isabel admonished.

“Sorry, but I thought I was seeing double there for a second,” he replied. “You could have told me,” he said to Maria.

“This is the first time we’ve seen him too, Kyle,” Maria reminded him.

“Um, guys, this is Zan and Liz,” Max introduced. “Zan, this is Maria and Michael,” he said to his brother. “And this is Kyle. Kyle, this is Liz and Zan.”

“Hi, guys” Kyle replied. Kyle was a little like Isabel at school. He was part of the group but he hung around with the jocks as well since he was captain of the basketball and football teams.

“Hi, everyone,” Serena whispered. She didn’t feel like she should be here. She knew that Maria didn’t really like her.

“Hey,” Kyle smiled and moved over so Serena could sit down next to him.

Liz watched curiously as her sister blushed. She reminded herself to tease Serena about it later. Liz took the seat next to Max with Zan sitting on the other side.

“So, Liz,” Kyle grinned. “You leave a boyfriend behind?” he asked, making it more than obvious to everyone at the table that he was flirting with her.

Maria groaned before slapping him in the head, which made Liz laugh. “Um, no” she told him.

“Well, I’m available,” he grinned at her.

“Noted,” she said before shooting a casual glance at her sister and finding her frowning.

“So, Zan, are you a pansy like your bother here and only watch sports or do you like to play?” he asked.
Max growled at Kyle. He was already pissed that he was hitting on Liz and now he was making him look bad in front of her as well. “Who invited him again?” he said quietly but Liz heard him and giggled, which made him smile.

“Both,” Zan smiled. He could tell he was going to like this Kyle. Well, that is as long as he stopped hitting on his sister.

“Well you’ll have to try out for some of the teams,” he suggested.

Zan shifted uncomfortably. He thought all the friends new about his illness. “Um, yeah we’ll see,” he said.

“Kyle,” Maria hissed slapping her stepbrother again.

“What!” he said, not sure of what he had done wrong.

“It’s cool” Zan spoke up sending Maria a small smile.

The waitress came over then to take their order.

“Oh, Zan, you’ve got to try the galaxy sub,” Liz told her brother excitedly. “It’s to die for,” she said.

Part 11

Liz paced the hospital corridor nervously.

“Liz sweetie come and sit down” her mother suggested. It was always the same, she wouldn’t sit still until they came out and told them that they could go in and see Zan.

Right now both the Parker and Evans families were sitting in the corridor waiting. The doctors were setting up Zan’s chemotherapy and Max was being prepared for his procedure as well which meant that all the rest of them could do was wait.

“Does it normally take this long?” Dianne asked Nancy. They had brought Zan and Max in hours ago and since then the Doctors had been busy with Zan.

Nancy nodded “Yeah”

“Oh ok” Dianne said slight appeased that this was normal she was starting to worry that something was wrong

Just then the door opened and Dr Watson walked out, he smiled when he saw Liz in her usual position, pacing the hospital corridors “Ok it’s all started just give the nurse a few minutes before you bombard him, and it would probably be best if you all didn’t go in at once” he suggested looking around the noticing for the first time how many people were actually there. The room was already small and seven people crammed in there around Zan wouldn’t help anyone.

“Ok. Thanks John” Jeff Parker said.

“How long until Max goes in?” Phillip asked then.

“He is being prepped right now so shortly” he said “I have to go get ready but I’ll keep you informed” he promised.

***

“Hey” Liz smiled as she entered the room. She had waited to everyone else had been in to see him. She knew once she entered that room that she wouldn’t want to leave so she waited. It was the hardest thing she had ever had to do, normally there weren’t another four people lined up to visit so she could spend all the time she wanted with Zan. It was just another thing in the long list of things that she would have to learn to adjust to.

“There you are munchkin” Zan smiled at his sister. He had been wondering where she was and waiting for her to come visit. “Come here” he said and patted the spot next to him on the bed. Liz didn’t hesitate moving towards the bed and lying beside him.

“How are you feeling?” she asked.

“Its ok” he told her “its afterwards that I’ll feel like shit”

Liz nodded she knew all to well how sick the chemotherapy made Zan. Liz also knew that this time it would be worse. The dose was stronger and he would have it everyday for the next week.

He handed her a set of earphones then and they both laid back and listed to his ipod. There was no words needed between them and that’s how they still were an hour later when Max came out of his surgery.

***

He was asleep when she entered the room. Liz wasn’t surprised from what she had read the procedure Max had just endured was fairly painful.

She had been with Zan all afternoon but he had fallen asleep a little while ago and now her mum and Dianne were sitting with him.

Liz took a seat beside him and reached a hand up to push the hair out of his face.

“Hey” he croaked his eyes opening. He was happy to see her, everyone had been in and out of the room all afternoon.

“I’m sorry to wake you” she apologised.

“You didn’t” he assured her.

“How are you feeling?” she asked concerned.

“Sore” he told her.

“I’ll bet” she smiled lightly.

“How’s Zan?” he asked.

“Ok” she told him “Asleep right now” she added.

Max nodded and closed his eyes again. “Isabel and Serena were here before I’m not sure where they went” he said.

“Its late” she informed him “they might have gone home”

“Yeah” he whispered shifting uncomfortably. “What are you still doing here?” he asked then.

Liz chuckled “I’m used to this. I don’t leave until they make me”

Max nodded he tried to open his eyes again, wanting to talk to her but he was just so tired. He felt Liz reach up and caress his face “don’t fight it” she whispered.

“You’ll be here later right?” he asked.

Liz smiled “I sure will” she assured him and with her last words Max finally closed his eyes and let sleep claim him.

***

“Is he still asleep?” Isabel asked when she popped her head in the next morning.

Liz looked up from her book and smiled “Yeah he was totally wiped” she informed her.

Zan had been awake when she had arrived at the hospital early that morning. She hadn’t left to close to midnight the night before and was back at eight am.

“He picked at some breakfast but he was feeling pretty queasy” she explained.

“and they’ll give him another dose today?” Isabel asked concerned.

“Yeah” Liz nodded “later today”

Isabel looked at Liz then and noticed the dark circles under her eyes “did you get any sleep last night?” she asked.

Liz opened her mouth to tell her she did but then thought better of it “Not really” she shrugged “I never do I wish they would just let me stay here” she said.

“I don’t how you do it” Isabel said “I spent half the amount of time you did yesterday and it drove me insane”

“Practise” Liz smiled.

“Yeah I guess” Isabel said.

“How’s Max this morning?” she asked then.

“A little grump actually” Isabel frowned.

Liz nodded “he’s bit my head of a couple of time already this morning” Isabel said.

“Maybe you should give him some space” Liz suggested. Isabel had a tendency to be a little motherly at times and if she was hovering over Max like Liz suspected then she wasn’t surprised he was snapping her head off.

“Maybe I could sit with Zan for a while and you could visit with him?” Isabel suggested.

“That’s a great idea” Liz smiled. She had wanted to visit Max all morning but hadn’t wanted to leave Zan alone in case he woke up and needed something.

“Can you come and tell me when he wakes up though?” she asked.

“Sure” Isabel said.

Liz stood up and made her way towards the door then, she was almost through it when she turned back “Isabel?” she said.

“Yeah?”

“Don’t take it personally” she said. “It’s probably the antiseptic that’s making him that way” she explained.

Isabel smiled then “Thanks Liz” she said.

Liz smiled back. She knew how Isabel was feeling right now. Isabel wanted desperately to be needed, to feel useful and she felt as though she was failing somehow since Max was upset of angry with her.

When Liz reached Max’s room she looked inside and watched as he flicked the channels on the remote control obviously frustrated when he couldn’t find something to watch.

“Hey” she said.

Max turned towards the door and smiled when he saw her “Hey”

Liz walked towards him then “How are you feeling today?” she asked.

Max shrugged “Sore. Bored.” He replied.

Liz looked towards the pile of magazines and books he had, Max had to stay in the hospital for a week to make sure that he didn’t get an infection in his wound. Right now he couldn’t move though because his hip was aching too much.

“Ahh so that’s why you’re biting your sisters head off. Entertainment” she giggled.

Max groaned “I didn’t upset her did I?” he asked.

“maybe a little” Liz said.

“I didn’t mean to but she was just…”

“Bugging you?” Liz asked amusement dancing in her eyes.

“Yeah” Max chuckled.

“So how’s Zan?” he asked her.

“He’s a little sick this morning but that’s typical” she answered. “Isabel is sitting with him for a while”

“Oh is that why you aren’t there?” he asked.

“Well Isabel needed a break from your temper and I wanted to see you” she answered him.

Max smiled then “well I’m glad it’s nice to see you too,” he told her.

“Well you did see me last night” she reminded him but when she saw Max’s eyes squint like he was trying to remember she realised that he didn’t.

“Did I?” he said

“Yeah but you were in and out of it so I’m not surprised that you didn’t remember” she told him.

“Sorry” he apologised.

“Don’t be silly there is nothing to apologise for” she assured him.

“Will you stay for a while?” he asked hopefully.

“I’d love to” she said.

A/N: Ok so i totally f^*ked up somehow because at this stage i don't think my beta has the right part either *sigh*. Anyway i rewrote the part as best i could. I'm not happy with it but because it isn't a very important part i'm going to go ahead and post it. If I'm lucky enough to find the real part then I'll replace it later.

Also, since i had to rewrite it my beta hasn't seen it so sorry about the mistakes. (Thank you Holly)

Thanks for your understanding, here it it!

Part 12

“There you are” Serena smile as she walked into Liz’s room and found her lying on the bed.

“Hey” Liz smiled sitting up. “How are you?” Liz had been spending so much time at the hospital that it felt like she hardly saw anyone anymore. But her parents were visiting with Zan that afternoon and had insisted that Liz leave for the day, and even though she wouldn’t admit it or didn’t want to she went because she really needed a break.

“Good, you?” Serena asked sitting down next to her.

“Tired” Liz admitted.

“How’s Zan?” Serena asked.

“He’s feeling better and hopefully he’ll be home in a couple of days” Liz smiled. It would be a relief when he was home again.

“What about Max?” she asked then. Since Max had been released from the hospital Liz hadn’t really gotten the chance to see him and she was surprised at how much she had missed him. Liz also felt really bad about neglecting him.

“He’s ok. A little grumpy because he can’t do much but he’s getting better” she told her.

“Good” Liz smiled.

“What are you doing?” Serena asked her then.

“Not much, I just go back from the hospital. My parent kicked me out,” she told her.

“It was bound to happen sooner or later” Serena replied.

They laid in silence for a little while before Serena sat up “Stuff this, it’s so hot” she whined.

“Tell me about it” Liz replied. She didn’t think she would ever get used to the New Mexico weather after living in some of the cooler climates.

“Lets go swimming” Serena suggested. The Evans’s had a pool and as far as Serena concerned it was the perfect opportunity to use it.

Liz’s eye lit up over the idea. It sounded wonderful to her “and we can work on our tans” Serena added.

“Ok, I’ll throw on my bikini and meet you at your place” Liz excitedly explained.

“Great” Serena smiled “Its good to see you again, Liz” she added as she made her way to the door of Liz’s room.

“You too. I’m sorry that I haven’t been around much” she apologised. Their relationship was still so new and if she had been able to Liz would have loved to have spent more time with Serena recently but Zan had been her number one priority.

“Don’t be silly you’ve been where you need to be” Serena assured her.

“I’ll see you in a minute” she said then before disappearing out the door.

***

Ten minutes later, dressed in a red bikini with a tank top and cut of shorts covering her, Liz made her way over the Evans's. She entered the house without knocking, something that they were all used to doing now since they had all become so close. It had been strange at first for Liz, but now she liked the fact that they all felt so comfortable around each other.

“Hi” she smiled when she popped her head in Serena’s room. Her twin had swimsuits pulled out everywhere and Liz couldn’t help but laugh.

“Which one?” she asked Liz.

“Does it matter?” Liz smirked “It’s just me” she reminded her.

Serena laughed at herself then “Your right,” she sighed and then grabbed a simple black one to put on before shoving the rest away in a draw.

“I might go see Max while your getting changed” Liz told her.

“Good idea I’m sure he’s dying to see you” Serena teased.

“Ok I wont be long” Liz replied apparently oblivious to her sisters teasing comment.

Max was in his room, lying on his bed, with the fan going and the music blaring when Liz knocked.

Max sat up and at first he was surprised to see Liz but soon his face only showed a bright smile, he was happy to see her.
“Hi”

“Hi” Liz smiled back.

“How are you?” Max asked her.

“Good, what about you are you starting to feel better?” she asked walking further into the room.

“Yeah I am thanks” he replied.

“How’s Zan?” he asked. Max had been visiting the hospital since his release frequently but no one was there as often as Liz and normally when he went Liz was nowhere to be seen.

“Ok, he should be home in a few days,” she informed him.

“That’s good” Max smiled. “I’m surprised to see you. I thought you would still be at the hospital”

Liz laughed, “I know I’m completely predictable, but Serena came over and wanted to hang and I couldn’t say no. Besides when I left my parents were visiting Zan”

“That’s good. So what are you and Serena doing?” he asked curiously.

“We’re going to have a swim. Do you want to join us?” she asked him.

“Um yeah I guess” Max replied after some careful thought. His mind had easily wandered to how Liz would look in swimmers.

Unbeknownst to Max, Liz was having similar thoughts.

“Ok well come down when you’re ready” she smiled before walking towards the door.

Serena was just walking out of her room when Liz walked out of Max’s.

“Ready?” she asked.

“Yep” Liz smiled and headed down the stairs.

When they got outside Philip and Dianne Evans were sitting in the pergola area reading over some papers. “Hi girls” they greeted.

“Hi” Serena and Liz replied in unison.

“Are you going to take a dip?” Dianne asked them when she saw the towels in their arms.

“Yep” Serena replied.

“That will be nice it certainly is hot today,” Phillip said.

“Your parents will be over later for a BBQ, Liz but it goes without saying, make yourself at home here ok” Dianne told her.

“Thanks Dianne” she smiled.

The girls laid their towels out on the banana chairs that were poolside, and Liz helped Serena cover her much fairer skin with sunscreen.

Liz was just about to pull her clothes off when Max walked out to the pool area.

“Hey guys” he smiled and waved before throwing his towel on a spare chair and pulling his shirt over his head.

Liz’s hand were on the hem of her tank top when Max turned around and she caught sight of his toned body for the first time.

“Oh god” she whispered to herself. How was she supposed to swim around that?

Liz couldn’t take her eyes off him. “Liz,” Serena said.

Liz didn’t hear her though “Liz,” she said again.

Following Liz’s gaze, Serena smirked when she noticed what was holding her sisters attention. Personally she didn’t understand Liz’s fascination with Max but she did know that he looked pretty good compared to most of the boys their age.

“Liz!” she tried a third time, but this time louder getting both Liz and Max’s attention

“What?” Liz asked and then flushed when she saw Serena’s knowing smirk.

“You going to get out of your clothes?” she asked.

“Um yeah” she nodded.

Turning from where Max was making his way into the pool Liz pulled her tank top over her head before she began to shimmy out of her shorts. Her bikini was fairly modest but she did fill it pretty well, or so she thought, and for a moment she wondered if Max would like what he saw as much as she had.

Max was trying not to stare as Liz removed her clothes, but the more skin that was revealed the harder it was. He already knew she was gorgeous but half naked she was stunning.

When Liz turned around though Max knew he was in trouble. Her bikini barely covered her small cleavage but Max instantly felt himself go hard and had to quickly sink into the cool water before he embarrassed himself.

Serena laid out in the sun “You going to lay or go straight in?” Liz asked her as she cast longing looks towards the pool and Serena. She wasn’t’ sure if she was ready to be in the pool alone with Max though.

“I’m going to lay here for a few minutes first” Serena replied.

“Here goes nothing,” Liz mumbled to herself as she approached the pool. Max looked even better wet then he did dry.

“You coming in?” he smirked as he watched her continue to hesitate at the edge.

“Yeah. Is it nice?” she asked.

Liz was driving Max crazy standing on the edge and looking so sexy.
“It’s great. Hop in” he told her.

“Ok” Liz said and closing her eyes she took a leap of faith and dived into the pool

Part 13

“How are you feeling?” Liz asked Zan as she fussed around him. He had been released from the hospital two days ago but he was still felling a little weak. The Doctor told him it would get better as the donor cells started to multiply.

Zan groaned “God munchkin you know I love you but between you, mum, Dianne and Isabel you’re driving me crazy”

Liz frowned “I’m sorry” she sighed. “She wasn’t used to having two other people to share the load with but she could see how four women fussing over you constantly could start to take its toll.

“Besides its summer vacation munchkin you should be out having fun and making friends” he added with a smile. She really was the best he loved her so much.

“You expect me to go out and make friends while your home in bed sick?” she asked shocked.

“Yes” Zan nodded with a smile “because if you make friends that means I’ll have friends come the start of the new school term” he added.

Liz smiled then and sat down beside him “I’d prefer to stay with you”

“Bullshit” he grinned “we both know you’d prefer to be out swimming with Max and staring at his oh so sexy body” he teased.

Liz blushed a million shades of red “what the hell are you talking about?” she asked trying to pretend that she was annoyed rather than totally embarrassed that he knew she had a thing for Max. I mean seriously what was her problem; Max was identical to her brother. She certainly didn’t have a thing for Zan so why was she reacting this way to Max.

“Oh munchkin you’re great value” he told her.

“I really have no idea what you’re talking about” she said again standing up and walking over to refold a pile of already folded clothes.

“Ok I’ll stop teasing you” he said “but seriously Liz you don’t need to be here. I’m going to watch the shows that Dad taped for me and then I’ll probably have a nap,” he explained.

“Are you sure? I mean I could stay and watch them with you I haven’t seen them either,” she asked.

Zan chuckled again “Liz, you hate Greys Anatomy you cant stand that chick who plays Izzy” he reminds her.

“I don’t hate it that much” she replies.

Zan sighs “I’m doing this for your own good Liz,” he informs her “now get out, and tell Mum, Dianne and Isabel to leave me alone as well”

“How long do I have to stay away for?” Liz asks feeling wounded.

“Liz, I’m not doing this to hurt you I just need space” Zan explained.

“Ok” she agreed.

“You’re not upset with me are you?” he asked as she made her way to the door.

Liz turned back and smiled at him “of course not” she assured him “just call my cell if you need anything” she added.

“I will” he promised.

When Liz left Zan’s room she decided to head next door to see what Serena was up to. If Zan was so insistent on her getting out then the least she could so was try. Over the past three weeks that they had been living in Roswell the two households had become like one. They didn’t knock on doors they just entered.

Once inside the Evan’s Liz headed upstairs to find Serena but when she reached her room it was empty so she went back down the stairs and looked throughout out the house for someone, anyone.

“Hey!” a voice startled her as she walked out side of the house and into pool area.

“Max” she said surprised.

Max smiled at her “what ya doing?” he asked her. He had just been lazing around the pool, enjoying a quiet afternoon when she had wondered out.

Liz walked towards him and took a seat in the lounge chair next to him “I was just looking for Serena”

“Oh” he said a little disappointed he had hoped that she had come over looking for him.

“She went shopping with my mum and Isabel” he explained.

“Oh ok” she said. That explained why Dianne and Isabel hadn’t been knocking down Zan’s door today.

“What’s up?” Max asked then “You look like you lost your best friend” he observed.

Liz chuckled “kind of feels that way” she sighed. “Zan kicked me out” she explained.

“What?” Max laughed.

“I guess having four women fussing over him became too much and he kicked me out. Told me I should be out enjoying my summer and making friends”

“well he has a point” Max told her.

“What?” Liz asked surprised that Max would agree. “Zan’s just been released from hospital and he’s recovering, where I should be is by his side”

“Liz do you have any idea what it would be like to be Zan?” Max asked her. Max felt he had a bit of a better insight into the way his brother was feeling since he had experienced something similar during his short stint in the hospital.

“Well no” she replied.

“Believe me Isabel and my mum are bad enough and then on top of that Zan has you and your mum”

“I know” Liz sighed “Its just hard you know” she told him. “I’m not used to being closed out”

“Liz, he’s not closing you out he just needs some space” Max argued.

“I know, I know” Liz smiled. Everything that Zan and Max had said made complete sense. Hell even Isabel and Dianne took time off to go shopping.

“What are you doing?” she asked him.

Max chuckled “I was enjoying my own space from the women in my life”

“Oh I can go” Liz said getting ready to stand up.

Max quickly reached out and grabbed her hand “No don’t go” he said “I hardly ever get to see you” he added then.

“Ok” she smiled and sat back down.

They talked about what had been happening in Max’s life after that, about what was going on with his friends. They had all been visiting frequently but Liz always seemed to miss them.

Max was about to open his mouth and ask her something but suddenly stopped deciding that it probably wasn’t a good idea.

“What?” Liz asked noticing that he was going to ask her something.

“Nothing” he quickly denied.

“No you were going to say something” she challenged.

“I was just going to ask you what you were doing tonight?” he blushed.

“Um nothing” she shrugged “unless Zan lets me back in his room”

“well maybe you should wait for him to come crawling to you” Max suggested with a smile.

Liz giggled “that’s a good idea, make him grovel”

“Yep”

“Did you have something in mind?” she asked shyly then but when she saw Max was confused she added “you know tonight?” she blushed.

“a movie?” he suggested.

“Yeah that sounds good” she replied nervously.

“Great” Max smiled.

***

That night Max was on his way to pick Liz up when he was cornered by his sister.

“Where are you going?” Isabel asked from her spot on the lounge. Max was a little dressed up to be heading over to Michael’s or the Crashdown.

“The movies” he replied and continued waking.

“Really?” Isabel’s eyes lit up. “With who? What are you seeing?” she asked standing up.

“Um I don’t know what we’re going to see yet, I guess I’ll just see what’s on” Max replied.

“Oh ok well who are you going with? Cause I might come” she said moving towards her bag.

“NO!” Max cried out. He did not want his sister tagging along on his date with Liz.

Isabel frowned “why not?” she asked “I’m sure Michael won’t mind me tagging along” she said as she threw her purse over her shoulder.

Max sighed “I’m not going with Michael” he said quietly but Isabel didn’t hear him because Serena had just walked down the stairs.

“Hey where are you two going?” she asked.

“The movies” Isabel answered.

“Oh, what are you seeing?” she asked.

“We don’t know yet” Isabel answered “do you want t come?” she asked then.

“Sure let me grab my stuff” she smiled and turned and ran back up the stairs.

Once Serena rejoined them back down stairs the siblings made their way out of the house. Max had just opened the front door and came face to face with Liz “Hi” she laughed “I was just coming looking for you” she told him.

“Yeah sorry about that I got caught up” he sighed.

“Hey Liz” Isabel smiled.

“We’re going to the movies do you want to come?” she asked.

Liz looked from Isabel then to Max a little confused. “Sure why not” she replied.
As far as Max was concerned the night just got worse after that. Isabel took it upon herself to call the rest of the gang and invite them and after that her and Michael had an argument over which movie they were going to watch.

Once seated in the theatre Max finally got the opportunity to talk to Liz. “I’m sorry” he leant in and whispered.

Liz turned and smiled at him “I didn’t realise that everyone would be coming” she commented. She knew that it wasn’t a date but she thought from their conversation earlier in the day that it would just be the two of them hanging out.

“They weren’t” he whispered. “Isabel kind of cornered me on the way out and next thing I know it half of Roswell is invited” he sighed.

“Its ok” Liz assured him with a small smile.

They sat next to each other quietly for the rest of the movie both feeling a little awkward. It was obvious to both of them that something was changing between them but neither of them was ready to acknowledge it yet, or what it was.

Part 14

“I’m sorry,” Zan said as he sat down next to Liz.

Liz looked up at her brother and smiled. “What for exactly?” she asked. Liz was pleased to see him up and about and thought he even looked a little better.

“Kicking you out. I just needed some space,” he said.

“I know and it’s fine,” she told him.

“If it’s fine then why haven’t I seen you for more than five minutes in the past two days?” he frowned.

Liz chuckled. “Missing me?” she teased.

“Yes,” he pouted. “I’ve been bored out of my brains and Mum and Dianne wouldn’t let me out of bed.”

“Oh, poor you,” she continued to tease him. “I’ve actually been out taking your advice,” she informed him then.

“Yeah?” he said surprised.

“Yeah, I went to the movies with Max, Isabel, Serena and all their friends last night and today I went shopping with the girls.”

“Oh, that’s good,” he smiled. “Did you have fun?”

“I did,” she told him, “but today I’m all free, so what do you want to do?” she smiled.

“Seriously?”

“Seriously, lets get you out of here,” she said.

“But what about Mum and Dianne?” he asked wondering how she thought she was going to pull this off.

“Just leave it to me and be ready to go in ten minutes,” she told him before standing up and rushing off to get everything organised.

***

Twenty minutes later Liz and Zan were cruising around Roswell in Max’s jeep.

“I don’t know how you pulled this off but thank you,,” Zan said.

“No problem,” she smiled turning her eyes back to the road. It had been rather simple. After explaining to Max what she wanted to do, it had been no problem to get him to agree to let her borrow the jeep. After that, it had been a simple matter of distracting her mother in the kitchen while Zan left the house.

“But what about Mum?” he asked.

“I left a note,” she smiled.

“She’s going to kill you, you do know that right?” he laughed at his sister.

“Yeah,” she nodded, “but she’ll get over it,” she added.

They pulled up in Frazier Woods ten minutes later and Liz pulled out the picnic basket she had thrown together and they walked down towards the lake and took a seat.

Zan breathed in the fresh air and grinned. “This feels so good.”

“I bet,” Liz replied unable to do anything but smile at how happy her brother looked right now.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” she replied. Liz was just happy that there was something she could do for him. It made her feel needed and even though she had come a long way in getting over her issues about being replaced in Zan’s life, she still needed a little bit of reassurance.

“So how have you been getting along with Isabel and Serena?” he asked.

“Good,” Liz replied. “Serena is great on the outside. She puts on this really great act, but she has no self confidence.”

“Yeah?” Zan said surprised.

“Yeah,” she nodded sadly, “but she’s great and it’s kind of good because we’re both starting over together.”

“That’s good. I’m glad that the two of you have bonded,” he replied. “Hopefully when I get better I’ll get the chance to get to know Max better,” he added.

“Yeah, that will be great for both of you, he’s a great guy,” she smiled.

Zan chuckled. “Hmm, well, you would know.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” she asked.

“Nothing,” he shook his head. He knew that Max was a sensitive subject for Liz.

Zan dropped the subject after that and they went on to talk about less trivial matters for the next hour or so until Liz noticed that Zan looked tired and she insisted on taking him home.

As expected Nancy Parker had been less than impressed when they got back home that Liz had taken Zan out. She let Liz have it once Zan was safely back in his bedroom.

“What were you thinking Liz?” she asked. “Zan is in no condition to be running around Roswell!”

Liz sighed. “Mum, he’s been trapped in this house for days with four women fussing around him. He was going insane,” Liz informed her.

Nancy frowned at her daughter. “That’s because he’s sick,” she reminded her.

“Don’t do that,” Liz snapped. “Don’t pretend that I don’t know or understand,” she said angrily. “Look at it from Zan’s perspective, not only are you and me fussing after him all day but now Dianne and Isabel are as well.”

Nancy sighed. “Alright, maybe it’s been a little too much but that still doesn’t mean you can just take off like that,” she informed her.

“In this case it did,” Liz told her. “I would never do anything to endanger Zan’s health.”

Nancy looked at the hurt look on her daughter’s face then and instantly felt guilty “I know you wouldn’t, honey. I’m sorry. I was just worried, that’s all”

Liz nodded. “I’m sorry. Next time I’ll tell you when we leave.”

“Next time?” Nancy asked.

“Yeah, tomorrow,” Liz smiled before turning and fleeing the kitchen before her mum could try and talk her out of it.

***

The next day Liz did exactly what she told her mother. After telling her that she was going to take Zan out for lunch, Liz, Max, Zan, and Serena headed for the Crashdown.

“I bet it feels good to be out,” Serena smiled at Zan.

“It sure does. I thought my mum and Liz were a killer but they don’t hold a candle to your mum and Isabel,” he laughed.

“Driving you insane?” she laughed. Isabel certainly took after Dianne Evans, there was no doubt about it. Both women were complete control freaks, Max had inherited a small amount of the control gene too but Isabel took it to new extremes.

“If you think she’s bad now, you just wait until Christmas or some other event,” she laughed.

Max chuckled too. “Yeah, this year I’ll tell her to give you the tree diagram you, might have more success than I did last year.”

“Tree diagram?” Liz asked confused.

“Yes. See, I can’t be trusted to pick out a good enough Christmas tree, Liz,” Max said in mock smugness. “The perfect Christmas tree has to be certain dimensions, a certain colour. Hey, even a certain fullness,” he continued.

“Oh God,” Liz giggled along with Serena.

“You’re kidding, right?” Zan asked from the back seat.

“Nope, and this year, Zan, it’s all yours” Max grinned.

When they pulled up at the Crashdown they all jumped out and went inside. Isabel, Alex and Kyle were already there whilst Maria and Michael were both working.

“Hey, guys,” they all greeted.

Liz was ready to slide into the booth along side Kyle when Serena discreetly elbowed her.

“Oow,” she said loudly which caused everyone in the restaurant to look at her. “Why’d you do that?” she glared at Serena.

“Let me slide in first,” Serena whispered.

“You want to slide in first?” Liz smirked shooting a coy look at Kyle who was staring back at the two sisters.

“You girls going to sit down or what?” he asked with a smile.

“Um, actually, I’ve got to go to the loo,” Liz replied gesturing over her shoulder.

“Didn’t you go before we left?” Zan asked.

“Um, yeah,” Liz said embarrassed and shot Zan a “Shut the hell up look”, “but I need to go again. Too much water,” she said.

Once Liz had taken off Serena slid in beside Kyle. “Hi,” she said.

“Hey,” Kyle grinned. “How you doing?” he asked in his best Joey from Friends impersonation which caused Serena to laugh.

Everyone at the table, including Maria who had come to take their order and say hi, looked at her strangely. It was unusual to see Serena Evans laugh. Hell, the girl hardly ever smiled and here she was giggling at Kyle Valenti.

“I’m good,” she replied with a smile oblivious to everyone watching her, which was a good thing because if she had realised she would have died with embarrassment. Although she had never admitted it to anyone Serena had been crushing on Kyle Valenti for years. There was something about the friendly jock that intrigued and excited her.

“You?” she asked. Sure Serena had had conversations with Kyle before but they were normally about something stupid.

“Good,” he grinned. “Enjoying my summer vay cay, you?”

“Um, yeah, it’s nice to not have to worry about school but I haven’t been doing very much,” she told him.

“Yeah, well, that’s not surprising with everything going on with your family at the moment. Zan and Max look good though”

“Yeah,” she smiled sneaking a glance at her brother and Zan who were chatting across from her.

Kyle and Serena were so wrapped up in their little conversation that they didn’t even notice Liz slide into the seat next to her and start talking to Maria.

“It’s good to see them both up and about again. Hopefully we can all enjoy the rest of the summer now,” Serena said.

“Yeah,” Kyle agreed. “Maybe we could go out.” he shrugged nervously.

He was a little unsure where it was coming from but there was just something about Serena Evans that intrigued him. When he had met Liz a couple of months ago, he had been instantly attracted to her but he knew from the looks that Max kept throwing her way that he was interested and he wasn’t the type of guy to tread on his mates’ territory. He might have thought about asking Serena out sooner if he had ever thought he stood a chance. At school she was something of an enigma. She sat with the popular crowd, which he did too on occasion but nobody really knew Serena Evans. She was too aloof.

“Um, really?” she stammered nervously.

“Yeah, I mean, if you’d like,” he replied.

“Yeah, that would be great,” she smiled.

“Cool,” he grinned.

“Are you guys ready to order?” Liz interrupted them. She had heard snippets of their conversation but the smile on her sister’s face was all she needed to know that something good had happened between her and Kyle.

“Sure,” they both replied.

Part 15

“Are you sure I look alright?” Serena asked Liz.

Tonight was her date with Kyle and she was completely stressing. It wasn’t like this was her first date. She had gone out with some of the insensitive jocks at school before, but normally it was to a school dance or a party or something.

Liz giggled at her sister. They had spent a week shopping for the perfect outfit and now that they had it, Serena wasn’t sure that it was right.

“You look great. You’re going to knock Kyle’s socks off,” she assured her.

Liz envied Serena. It was obvious from the way her sister talked and got nervous around Kyle that she liked him a lot and Liz was excited and envious for her twin that Kyle seemed to like her back too. Liz had never been on a date. It just wasn’t something she had ever gotten around to doing. She had never gotten close enough for anyone to ever ask her at her previous schools and she wondered briefly if maybe things would change now that they were in Roswell.

“So it’s suitable for a date?” she checked.

”Um I think so,” Liz replied.

“You think?” Serena stressed.

“Well, I’ve never actually been on a date but I’ve seen other people and you’re only going to a movie right?”

Serena nodded. “You’ve never been on a date?” she asked her.

Liz looked down sadly and shook her head.

***

Max was heading up the stairs to grab his basketball so he and Zan could shoot some hoops. He was just passing by Serena’s room when he heard Liz’s voice and found his steps slowing down.

“… going to a movie right?” Liz said.

“You’ve never been on a date?” he heard Serena ask.

“Um no,” Liz replied.

Max was shocked. How could someone as beautiful as Liz never have been on a date before? Max thought guys would have lined up at her door for the chance to take her out just like they did both Isabel and Serena.

He knew from his conversations with Liz that she never really made many friends in all the different placed they lived but she would have at least gone to dances, wouldn’t she?

“Not even a school dance?” Serena asked the questions Max was wondering.

“No,” he heard Liz say.

Max continued towards his room after that not wanting to eavesdrop anymore but all the while a plan was forming in his head.

***

“Wow,” Serena replied. She wasn’t quite sure what to say to her sister.

“You look beautiful,” Liz told her.

They both heard the doorbell ring then. “Oh God, it’s him,” Serena jumped.

“Relax. I’ll go let him in while you put yourself together,” Liz suggested.

“Thanks, Liz,” Serena smiled as Liz headed out the door. “For someone who hasn’t done this before you’re certainly a pro.”

Liz smiled back. “Thanks.”

Assuming it was Kyle on the other side Liz answered the door so Serena could make her entrance.

He smiled one of his usual charming smiles at her and Liz braced herself for one of his usual lines. “Wow it must be my lucky night because I didn’t expect to see two beautiful women.”

Liz chuckled at him. “You’re certainly good for my ego, Kyle,” she said. “Come in. Serena will be down in a minute,” she told him stepping aside to let him in.

Kyle looked smart in a pair of jeans and a button up shirt and Liz smirked when she noticed the cowboy boots he was wearing. Kyle was definitely a good-looking guy but Liz wouldn’t have guessed him as Serena’s type in a million years.

Serena chose that moment to walk down the stairs and she blushed when Kyle whistled at her.

“Hi,” she said shyly.

“Hi,” he smiled back. “You look great,” he told her.

“You too.”

“Should we go?” Kyle suggested then and Liz realised that she was completely invisible to the couple.

“Sure,” Serena eagerly supplied.

After they were gone, Liz wandered out of the Evans house and towards her own when she stumbled upon Max shooting hoops by himself in the front driveway.

“Hey,” she smiled.

“Hey yourself,” he smiled back. “Did Serena get off alright?”

“Yeah, she was pretty nervous though,” Liz explained.

“If Kyle doesn’t treat her right, I’ll rip his head off” Max promised and Liz smiled in amusement.

“Well, I have a feeling that Serena likes Kyle’s head, but if she comes home crying I’ll be sure to tell her,” she laughed.

Max laughed with her. “What are you doing?” she asked him.

“Oh, Zan and I were shooting some hoops but he got tired,” Max told her.

“Oh,” Liz frowned. Zan was picking up a little everyday but she knew it still upset him that he couldn’t do the simple things he loved being able to do. Next week he would go in for some tests to see if the bone marrow transplant had worked and then after that he would be checked every six months.

“You want to play?” Max asked her.

“I’m not very good at basketball,” she admitted “I think its got something to do with my height,” he told him.

“Yeah, I could see why,” Max teased.

“Hey,” she said shoving at his chest, “leave my height alone.”

“Ok, ok,” Max laughed. “Well, we could so something else,” Max suggested. “I mean, it’s Saturday night and Isabel is out with Alex, Zan's in bed,” he said.

“Um, yeah ok,” Liz said. “What did you have in mind?”

“A movie?” he said but then he remembered the last time they tried that. “Bowling?” He saw Liz’s eyes light up when he suggested bowling. “You want to go bowling?”

“I’d love to,” she told him.

“Great,” he grinned. “Well how about we meet here in half an hour and we’ll go?”

“Sounds good,” she agreed.

An hour later Liz was squealing in delight as she rolled the ball down the lane.

“This is great. I haven’t bowled in years,” she told Max.

Max chuckled. He loved seeing her so happy. “I’m glad that you’re having such a good time,” he told her.

“Thanks for bringing me,” she smiled at him.

Unable to help himself Max reached out and tucked a strand of hair that had fallen out of Liz’s ponytail back behind her ear.

“Your welcome,” he said quietly.

They both stood staring at each other then for what felt like an eternity until Liz blushed and looked away.

Max cleared his throat and made his way over to pick up his ball and take his turn and avoid any more awkwardness between them.

***

Serena sat nervously in her seat as they waited for the movie to start. So far everything had been great between her and Kyle, he had cracked jokes the whole way to the theatre in an effort to ease the awkwardness and once they got there he let her pick.

“Here,” he said handing her a Snickers bar. “I got this for you” he smiled.

Serena thought she would melt into a puddle right then. How on earth did Kyle Valenti know that Snickers bars were her absolute favourite food in the world?

“I know how much you like them because you’re always getting them out of the vending machine at school,” he told her and then reddened when he realised what a stalker he sounded like.

“Thank you,” she told him with a bright smile. “They’re my favourite,” she informed him.

“Good and you’re welcome,” he whispered back just as the lights dimmed and the previews started.

It was just after the movie started that Serena felt Kyle’s arm reach over the back of the seat. She smiled at the discreet way he was trying to put the moves on and decided to cut him a break and leaned into him. As she did that Kyle breathed a sigh of relief and wrapped his arm firmly around her.

As far as Serena was concerned this was turning out to be the best night of her life

***

“You didn’t have to walk me to the door,” Liz smiled at Max as they made the small walk from the Evans driveway to the Parkers front door.

“I know,” Max shrugged, “but I wanted to,” he replied.

“Well thank you and thanks for tonight I had a great time,” she said once they reached it.

“Me too,” Max smiled nervously. “Maybe we could do it again sometime?” he suggested then.

“I would love to”, Liz quickly and enthusiastically replied. What was wrong with her? Why was she crushing on her brother’s twin? It was completely wrong on so many levels but none of them seemed to matter when she was with Max.

“Well good night,” Max told her as he took a step away. He would love to kiss her but he knew it was too soon.

“Night, Max,” Liz replied and with a final smile opened the front door and disappeared behind it.

***

Kyle fiddled nervously with his keys as he walked Serena to the door. Everything about the date had been perfect. Serena had let him put an arm around her throughout the movie and towards the end they had even held hands. Kyle wasn’t used to dating like this, most of his experience with girls was at parties where alcohol was involved.

“Well, I had a great time,” Serena told him when they reached the door. The porch light was on much to her amusement.

“Me too,” Kyle smiled stepping forward unconsciously.

Serena held her breath when he moved forward, hoping that he was going to try and kiss her.

“Can I take you out again?” he asked.

“I’d like that,” Serena smiled.

They inched closer together again and Kyle slowly began to lean in. Serena met him half way and their lips brushed together gently before they pulled back and looked at each other. Kyle stepped in some more and this time when he leant in he brushed his lips against Serena’s harder and she instantly responded, her arms going around his neck. They were both getting into the kiss, Kyle’s tongue probing the entrance to Serena’s mouth when Max stumbled onto the front porch.

“Shit,” he cursed, his eyes going wide and causing Kyle and Serena to jump apart. “I’m so sorry,” he apologised. He headed straight to the door then. “I’ll just…” he said. “ Um, night,” he mumbled rushing into the house.

As soon as he was gone Serena burst out laughing.

Kyle joined her soon after. “God, I thought that was your dad,” he told her.

“I know,” she said. “I should go in,” she said regretfully.

“Yeah,” Kyle nodded. He leant in and kissed her quickly then before taking a step back. “I’ll call you,” he promised. “Good night.”

“Night, Kyle” Serena smiled.

Kyle waited until she was behind the closed door before he walked with a huge smile towards his car.

Part 16

“Hurry up, Liz, or you’re going to be late,” Nancy Parker yelled up the stairs.

It was the first day of the school and both Liz and Zan would be starting their senior year with Max, Serena, and Isabel at West Roswell.

Zan sat at the table eating his breakfast, unfazed by his sister who still hadn’t come down the stairs.

“What is taking her so long?” Nancy sighed as she sat down.

“You’re kidding, right?” Zan looked at his mother. “Obviously you haven’t seen how long it takes Isabel or Serena to get ready for anything,” he pointed out. Liz was a breeze compared to her sister and his.

Over the summer, as Zan’s health improved, he had gotten the opportunity to know his other family. Zan and Max had become very close and even though he loved his sister to death, he finally understood what it means to be a twin. Zan knew that Liz understood it. Liz and Serena were also very close and spent a lot of time together.

“I’m ready,” Liz announced as she rushed into the kitchen.

Liz was wearing a knee length denim skirt and a red tank top and Zan wondered why it took so long to decide.

“You look nice,” he told her.

“Thanks,” she smiled.

Zan was wearing his signature black jeans and black top. As he started to recover over the past few months, Zan began putting some weight back onto his lean frame and Liz found it strange how he looked more like Max now. His hair remained shorter than Max’s but the two of them worked out every afternoon now and Zan was slowly developing the same toned body that Max sported already.

It had been the happiest moment in both family’s lives when Dr. Watson had been able to tell them that the bone marrow transplant had worked, and that Zan was in remission. He would still have to be monitored, and look after himself, but essentially he was in recovery and he could start to live his life again, after so many years of treatment.

“You look good too,” she told him.

“I know,” he grinned and Liz just shook her head in annoyance.

She knew that the girls in West Roswell wouldn’t know what hit them when Zan walked in. Her mind wandered to Max then and she wondered if he was popular with the girls at school? Liz hadn’t heard him talk about, or seen him with anyone over the summer but she found it hard to believe that girls weren’t interested in him.

After grabbing a piece of toast and some yoghurt Liz and Zan headed to school in the new Rav 4 their parents had bought them a month earlier to share. It wasn’t brand new but it was stylish and reliable which suited them both.

“So are you nervous?” Zan asked her.

“Yeah. I don’t know why, I guess it’s because we’re going to be staying at this school so we have to try and fit in and make friends,” Liz replied.

“Yeah, I know,” he nodded. “I thought about trying out for the basketball team,” he added with a smile.

“Are you going to?” Liz asked excitedly.

“I don’t know,” he sighed. “I talked to Mum and Dad about it and they didn’t think it was a good idea because I’m not one hundred percent yet, but I kind of see this as my last chance.”

“I think you should do it,” Liz assured him.

“Yeah?” he asked. Normally Liz was the first to object to something he wanted to do if it wasn’t good for his health.

“Yeah, as long as you feel up to it, why not? What did the doctor say?”

“They just tell me to go ahead and live my life.”

“Well then that’s what you should do,” she added.

They pulled into the parking lot and weren’t surprised to find Max, Serena, Isabel, Alex, Michael, Maria and Kyle all standing around Max’s jeep waiting for them.

“Hey, party people,” Zan yelled as he hopped out of the driver’s side of the 4WD.

“Hey!” they all smiled back.

“First day of school sucks,” Maria mumbled which caused everyone to laugh.

Max and Zan shook hands first and then Michael, Alex, and Kyle all followed. Liz always found it funny how they did the funny handshake thing. Meanwhile, Liz joined the girls who all immediately started to comment on what each other were wearing.

“We should go,” Maria announced looking at her watch.

Liz and Zan already had their schedules along with everyone else, and Liz knew that she shared most of her classes with Max.

Hanging back Max waited for Liz so they could walk together.

“Hi,” he smiled.

“Hi yourself,” Liz replied.

“You look nice,” he said causing Liz to blush.

Over the summer Liz and Max had gotten even closer then they already were and still found time to go out occasionally by themselves. For Max, his feelings for Liz just got stronger everyday and he wanted so badly to tell how he felt but he was just so unsure how she would react. He had a heart to heart with Zan about it the week before and Zan had encouraged him to just talk to Liz, but so far Max hadn’t worked up the courage.

Liz was still incredibly confused. On one hand she thought her feelings for Max were creepy considering he was Zan’s twin brother. On the other hand she had never met anyone like Max before. He was sweet, sensitive, they had a lot of things in common, and he made her feel like no one had ever before.

“Thank you,” she replied.

“So are you ready for our first class?” Max asked. They had biology up first and Max knew from experience that they usually had assigned seating. He just hoped that he was either really lucky, and him and Liz got assigned, or that there wouldn’t be a seating plan after all.

“Yeah. I mean, I’m excited truthfully,” Liz replied as she nervously pushed a piece of hair behind her ear. “It’s been a long time since I’ve actually gotten to stay at a school and finish a school year. It’s nice to know I won’t be leaving next month.”

“Yeah, I bet it is.”

They walked through the front door and Liz could immediately hear the whispers.

“Oh my God is that Max Evans?”

“No, there are two of them!”

“Who’s the girl?”

Liz felt Max’s hand on the small of her back and she moved closer to him, craving the safety of his arms. She looked up at Max and found him smiling down at her.

“Everyone’s whispering,” she said.

“Yeah, well what did you expect?” Max smirked. “There’s two of me,” he teased.

“Haha,” Liz smiled. “I just wish they weren’t all staring,” she added.

They met up with everyone else in the front of the lockers, and Liz was happy to find her locker was only a few down from Serena’s.

“Serena!” Everyone turned at the high pitch screeches and turn to watch the two blonde cheerleaders rushing towards them.

They took their turn pulling Serena into a hug, which was obvious made Serena uncomfortable.

“How are you, sweetie?” they both asked.

“Um, fine,” Serena said as she took step back.

Liz watched as the two friends eyed her brother, and then Max before turning their attention to her.

“So, aren’t you going to introduce us?” they all but squealed.

Serena sighed. “Katie, Karen, this is my sister Liz and this is Max’s twin brother Zan”

Before you could blink, both girls had shoved their bit tits in Zan’s face.

“Ladies” he grinned but his eyes narrowed on Karen.

“Hi,” she giggled.

Liz watched in horror along with Isabel, Maria, and Serena as Katie turned to Max then.

“Maybe the four of us could double date one night,” she said, running a finger down the middle of Max’s chest.

“Sounds good,” Zan spoke up already enjoying the female attention he was getting.

“I don’t think so,” Isabel snapped, finally not being able to take another moment of the torture. “Take of my brothers,” she instructed.

Both girls did what she said immediately, but not before throwing her a glare.

Max sighed in relief and moved closer to Liz when Katie finally took her hands away. Zan continued to follow the girls with his eyes as they left.

“See you later, Zan,” they said sultrily as they strutted down the hall.

“They’re your friends?” Zan immediately asked Serena.

Serena looked around the group in front of her and knew exactly what they were all thinking. Why would she want to hang out with people like that rather than them? That’s because you used to be like that, she reminded herself silently.

Kyle wrapped an arm around his girlfriend for support. He knew that she wasn’t the same Serena that had been friends with Katie and Karen last year. Since their first date Kyle and Serena had been together. Kyle had called the next day and asked her out again, and the rest as they say is history. Nearly two months and they were still going strong.

“Kind of,” she mumbled an answer to Zan’s question.

“You should bring them by the house!” he smirked oblivious to her discomfort.

“I don’t think so,” Isabel said icily. “Besides, Serena isn’t really friends with them, right, Sere?” she smiled at her sister.

“Yeah, not really,” she smiled back at her sister.

The bell rang then and the group slowly broke away as they walked into twos or threes to class.

“So…” Liz said as she and Max walked towards the biology lab.

“So…” he said back promoting her to finish what she started to see.

“Have you dated Katie before?” she asked.

“Katie?” he questioned.

“Yeah.”

“God NO!” he cried. The last thing he wanted was for Liz to think he would doubt someone as shallow as Katie Masters.

“Oh, ok,” Liz said, her head down to hide the smile. “She just seemed to like you, that’s all,” she shrugged.

“Oh, I doubt it,” he immediately responded, “and besides she’s not my type,” he told her.

They had entered the biology lab by now and they grabbed a bench in the back.

Unable to stop herself from asking Liz looked up from her bag “So, what is your type?”

Max was surprised by her question, and found himself getting lost in her eyes. “Um,” he stuttered. “I’d say brunette, brown eyes,” he said before he could stop himself. He watched as Liz blushed slightly before she moved closer to him.

“Really?” she asked.

Max reciprocated her move and also leaned in. “Um, yeah, really,” he told her.

They were mere inches away from each other and Max was just about to take the biggest leap of his life and lean in and press his lips against hers.

“Ok, class,” Mr Seligman said as he walked into the room. “Welcome to senior biology, I’ll be your teacher for the year.”

Liz immediately jumped and her attention snapped to the front of the room. The change came so quick that Max almost fell out his seat and had to put a foot out to stop himself.

“Ok,” Seligman said. “Let’s get right into business. Here is the seating chart for the year.”

Part 17

“So you’ve been at West Roswell a few weeks now, Liz” Maria said as she sat across from her in a booth at the Crashdown. Isabel and Serena were also there, the girls enjoying some girl time. “See any guys that interest you?” she asked.

Liz’s thought immediately went to Max and when she saw the looks her sister and friends were giving her she blushed. Truth be told Liz had gotten a fair bit of attention from most of the males at school.

“Yeah, I saw Troy Wilder talking to you yesterday,” Isabel said.

“Um, yeah, Troy is really nice,” Liz agreed. He was, but he didn’t make her skin tingle when he touched her like Max did, but she couldn’t tell them that.

“So?” Maria prompted.

Liz noticed that Serena was being awfully quiet and looked to her for help. Her sister stared at her sympathetically and despite the earlier teasing that indicated she knew that Liz liked Max, Liz realised that her sister was more tuned in to her feelings then she realised.

“So what?” she asked.

“Is there anyone you like?” she asked.

“Well, I guess Troy is nice and so is James,” she shrugged.

“Nice choice,” Isabel grinned.

“So where are the boys today?” Liz asked trying to change the subject.

“Oh, Alex has band practise,” Isabel replied.

“Michael is watching some hockey game,” Maria shrugged.

“Kyle has practise,” Serena added.

“Ok,” Liz laughed.

“And I’m pretty sure Zan is busy trying to convince Max to try out for the basketball team with him, and to go on a double date he set up for Friday night,” Isabel explained.

Liz looked up surprised. She already knew that Zan was going to try out and that he wanted Max to as well since they made a good team but she hadn’t heard anything about the date.

“Who with?” she asked.

Please don’t let it be Katie and Karen she chanted under her breath. As much as she tried she had been unable to forget about the first day of school in biology. Liz could have sworn that Max was telling her that she was his type, and that maybe he liked her but since then he hadn’t done anything to indicate that’s how he felt. In fact, if anything, Liz thought he was avoiding her.

“Tamara Jacobs and Natalie Edmunds,” Maria shrugged.

Liz knew Natalie, she was in a few of her classes, and she had seen her staring at Max a few times. Natalie was also a brunette. However, she had no idea who Tamara was.

“I don’t know Tamara,” she told them.

“She’s ok,” Serena said. “Gorgeous blonde, not too smart, though, so you probably don’t have any classes with her.”

“Oh, ok,” she said.

***

“You ok?” Serena asked Liz.

“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?” she asked as she fiddled with Serena’s hair.

It was Friday night and everyone had a date except for Liz. Serena was going out with Kyle, Maria and Michael were working, Alex and Isabel had gone to a movie and Max and Zan had in fact gone out on a double date with Tamara and Natalie.

“I don’t know, you’ve just been really quiet all week and I hardly see you at lunch at school,” she pointed out. In fact, since the afternoon in the Crashdown when Isabel had told Liz about Max’s date, Liz hadn’t been to lunch once.

“I’ve been studying, and I had an assignment that I needed to do some research for,” Liz lied.

“Ok,” Serena sighed. She knew Liz well enough by now to know that she would talk to her if wanted to, you couldn’t force her.

Serena left a few minutes later with Kyle and Liz wandered back to her house. Inside, both sets of parents were sitting at the table and Liz quickly rushed up the stairs to avoid them. She already felt sorry enough for herself; she didn’t want their sympathy as well.

The truth was Liz was lonely. This was the third Friday night since school had started that she had been left at home by herself. Max was avoiding her when she wasn’t avoiding him and she didn’t know why, all she knew was that she was lonely.

Looking over at her phone she noticed the blinking on her answering machine and hit the button.

“Hi, Liz, it’s Troy. I was sort of wondering what you were up to tonight and if maybe you wanted to catch a late movie? Anyway, give me a call 555-737-886.”

Liz only hesitated for a second. This wasn’t the first time Troy had asked her out but this time she wasn’t going to say no. If Max was going to date then so was she.

He picked up after the second ring. “Troy, it’s, Liz,” she explained. “I’d love to go to a movie if you still want to.”

***

“Zan,” Tamara giggled again.

Max sighed and looked down at his date, Natalie. Sure she was gorgeous and she was definitely interested but he would have preferred to be at home right now. He wondered then what Liz was doing right now.

Since the first day of school, in the biology lab, Max had been finding it even harder to deny his feelings for Liz, so instead, he had avoided her. It meant that he had barely seen her over the past few weeks and he was really starting to miss her. He knew he was hurting her when he did it so for the past week he had been eating at their normal lunch table only to find that Liz didn’t show up at all.

“You ok?” Natalie’s sweet voice asked him.

Max tried to smile. “Yeah, I’m fine,” he replied.

He felt Natalie place her hand on his leg then. She really was lovely and he was lucky that Zan had let him have Natalie rather than Tamara, but she just wasn’t Liz.

After the movie the girls excused themselves to go to the ladies room leaving Max and Zan waiting.

“Will you snap out of it?” Zan groaned.

“What?”

“You’ve barely paid any attention to Natalie and she’s totally swooning over you,” Zan pointed out.

“I know, she’s just not…”

“She’s just not what?” Zan asked.

“She’s not Liz,” he sighed.

“Liz??” Zan called out.

***

Across the theatre, Liz entered with Troy. “I’m so glad you agreed to come,” he smiled down at her.

“Me too,” she replied and she truly meant it. Liz might not be interested in Troy as more than friends but she was happy to be out of the house.

“Liz??” she heard someone call out and when she looked around she spotted Zan.

“That’s your brother, right?” Troy asked as he watched Liz wave.

“Um, well, yeah, it’s really confusing,” Liz replied.

“Yeah, I’ve heard the stories,” he smiled. “Do you want to go over there and say hi?” he offered.

“Yeah sure,” she replied. It wasn’t until they were half way over there that Liz noticed Max standing next to Zan and her steps almost faltered.

“Hi,” she smiled when she got there and hugged Zan back when he wrapped his arms around her.

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

“Oh, we’re just catching a late session,” she mumbled. “Hi Max,” she added.

“Hi, Liz,” he all but whispered.

“Hi, I’m, Zan, Liz’s brother,” Zan introduced then, holding his hand out to Troy.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Liz blushed. “Troy Wilder, this is my brother Zan, and you know Max, right?”

“Yeah,” he replied shaking Zan’s hand and then offering it to Max.

“Hi, Max,” Troy smiled.

“Hi,” Max said through gritted teeth as he watched Troy put his arm around Liz.

Tamara and Natalie made their way over to the guys then and within seconds Tamara was plasted all over Zan.

“Did you miss me?” she asked Zan.

Zan ran his hand through his hair nervously, and cast a look at Liz who was shaking her head trying to hide her amusement.

“Um, Tamara, this is my sister Liz,” he introduced.

“Hi,” Liz smiled.

Liz looked at Max then and tried not to frown when she saw how close Natalie was standing to him, or that she had her hand on his arm in a possessive manner.

“Hi, Natalie,” she smiled.

“Hi, Liz. Hi, Troy,” she smiled kindly but she shifted a little closer to Max which Liz read easily as a back off message.

“Well, we should go. Our movie is getting ready to start,” Troy said.

He took Liz’s hand then and after saying goodbye, led her towards the candy bar.

“It must be weird how Max and Zan look so alike, kind of like you have two brothers,” he commented.

“Um, no, it doesn’t feel that way at all actually,” Liz replied. “Max is more like a best friend than a brother,” she shrugged.

Troy shifted nervously. He had seen the way Max Evans was looking at Liz, and even worse, he had seen the look of jealousy in Liz’s eyes when Natalie walked up to Max.

Unable to help herself Liz turned to where they were standing before. They weren’t standing there anymore but when she cast her eyes further they met with burning amber staring back at her regretfully.

***

On the other side of the theatre, Natalie was having similar thoughts to Troy. She really liked Max Evans and now that she had her chance with him she planned on making it worthwhile. Natalie only hoped that Troy Wilder would be able to keep Liz Parker occupied and away from Max if she had any chance of making any ground with Max.

“Let’s go,” Zan said as he and Tamara started walking out of the cinema. “Let’s eat.”

Max reluctantly followed, his eyes trailing back to Liz a few times and then she turned around and looked right at him. Her brown eyes sparkling right at him. If he could have he would have stared at her all night long but then he felt Natalie tug on his arm and before he knew he’d been swept out of the cinema and away from Liz.

Part 18

Liz was lying on her bed reading when Serena burst into her room.

“Why didn’t you tell me you went out with Troy on Friday night?” she demanded.

It was Monday afternoon and Liz was shocked it took Serena this long to confront her since Isabel had known at lunchtime.

“I didn’t think it was important?” Liz guessed the correct answer. Sometimes it was funny how similar Serena and Isabel could act, she’d received a similar ear bashing from Isabel that morning.

“Not important? It was like your first date!” Serena exclaimed.

“It wasn’t a date, ok? And besides we just went to the movies,” Liz shrugged.

“Well according to Kyle, Troy thinks it was a date and he told all the guys to keep their hands off you.”

“WHAT!” Liz cried.

“Kyle heard him…”

“No, I heard you the first time,” Liz stopped her. “Why the hell would he do that? I didn’t even agree to go out with him again.”

“You didn’t? Why not?” Serena asked.

“He asked and I said I’ll see,” Liz replied.

“Why are you hiding in here anyway?” Serena asked siting down next to her.

Liz shrugged. “No reason.”

“You wouldn’t be trying to avoid someone, would you?” Serena asked. “Because I think he’s catching on.”

“Good,” Liz huffed.

“What’s going on with the two of you?” Serena asked.

“Ask him, he’s the one who started this whole avoid each other thing,” Liz cried.

“Ok, I will,” Serena replied standing up and making her way to the door.

Liz didn’t believe she was serious though and it was only when Serena didn’t return a few minutes later that she sat up panicked.

“Oh shit,” she cried rushing out of her room and out of the house towards the Evans.

***

Serena found Max in a similar position to Liz’s except that he wasn’t reading, just listening to music. She burst into his room without knocking and stood at the foot of his room.

“Ever heard of knocking?” he asked annoyed. He was just sitting and thinking about Liz and he didn’t want to be annoyed by his sister.

“Ok, I want to know what the hell is going on with you and Liz.”

“What are you talking about?” Max asked.

“Why are you ignoring her?” Serena demanded.

“She’s ignoring me!” Max cried.

“Well she says you started it so she’s just playing along,” Serena told him.

Max sighed. “It doesn’t matter anyway. Just tell her that she doesn’t have to stay away from the lunch table any longer.”

He wasn’t sure how they got to this point but everything was now out of control. His feelings for Liz were even stronger than they were before and now she was dating someone else whilst he was kind of seeing Natalie.

Max wished he could just forget about Liz and be with Natalie but she occupied his thoughts constantly.

“Max, are you even listening to me?” Serena demanded.

Max jumped of his bed and reached for the keys to the jeep.

“I’m going for a drive. Tell Mum I’ll be home for dinner, ok?” he said walking straight past her and out of the room.

***

Liz was halfway across the Evans’ lawn when Max burst out of the house with Serena hot on his tail.

“Just stay out of it Serena,” he yelled back.

“Max?” Liz questioned. Liz didn’t remember seeing Max so annoyed before.

As soon as Max heard her sweet voice he stopped dead in his tracks.

“Liz,” he all but whispered.

Serena stopped her chase when she caught sight of Liz on the lawn now face to face with Max. Things might not have worked out the way she had planned when she had started this but ultimately Max and Liz were now face to face so that was a start.

“You ok?” Liz asked shifting uncomfortably under his stare.

“Yeah, just needed to get out of the house,” he smiled.

“Oh ok,” Liz nodded.

“Come for a drive?” he asked then.

Liz smiled. “Yeah, I’d like that.”

Serene watched happily as Max helped Liz climb into the passenger side of the jeep before jumping in and starting it up.

“Where are they going?”

Serena turned and to see Zan coming from the Parker’s house. “A drive,” she answered.

Zan sighed. He loved his sister and brother but he just couldn’t see anything good coming from the little attraction they had between them. He wanted them both to be happy but he just wasn’t sure if Roswell or their parents were ready for the two of them to be a couple.

Zan sighed. “You shouldn’t encourage them.”

“I’m not,” Serena frowned. “What’s the problem anyway?” she asked.

“Do you really think everyone is going to be cool if they decide to start dating?” Zan asked her.

Serena had never thought about that before. “I don’t know. Besides, this is not about them dating it’s about them just talking to each other,” she pointed out.

“At the moment,” Zan replied. “I’m just worried that’s all, Sere,” he told her.

“I know but Max and Liz are smart. They wont do anything stupid,” she reminded him.

***

They drove in silence, the radio turned up, and the breeze whipping their hair. Liz wasn’t sure where they were going but she wasn’t worried. It was nice to just be sitting next to Max again.

They pulled into the desert and Max drove until they were next to a rock formation.

“It’s nice out here,” Liz told him.

“Yeah, I like coming out here. It’s peaceful,” Max smiled.

“I’m sorry,” they both blurted out at the same time and then broke into laughter.

“You go,” Max smiled.

“I’m sorry, I’ve been avoiding you,” Liz said.

“Me too,” Max replied, “and you were right, I did start it,” he said.

Liz went bright red. “So Serena got to you, huh?”

“Yeah,” Max smiled.

“So why were you avoiding me?” she asked.

“Why were you avoiding me?” Max asked.

“Because you were avoiding me,” Liz laughed.

“I felt a little awkward after what happened in biology,” Max admitted.

Liz’s mind flashed back to the almost kiss. “Why?”

“Well we almost kissed.” Max pointed out. “Didn’t we?” he asked uncertainly

Liz licked her suddenly dry lips. “Yeah we did,” she replied.

They sat there in silence for a few more minutes before Max climbed out of the jeep and went around to Liz’s side.

“Want to look around?” he asked.

“Sure,” she replied.

They walked around the rocks for a little while both pointing out interesting things they found until they found themselves back where they started.

Throughout their walk, Liz had been wondering why Max was going to kiss her and decided that she couldn’t not ask any longer.

“Why?” she blurted out.

Max looked at her confused.

“I mean why were you going to kiss me?” she asked.

Max blushed a brilliant shade of red as he tried to avoid her gaze. “Well you were leaning in and I was leaning in…”

“No, I mean did you want to kiss me?” she asked boldly. Liz loved to see Max blush, she thought it was so adorable.

“Yeah, did you?” he replied shuffling nervously.

“Yes,” Liz replied.

Liz felt the butterflies in her stomach do a summersault and she grinned. Max liked her.

“Liz, I really like you I just….” Max told her.

“I know, and I really like you too,” Liz replied.

“I just don’t think that other people…” Max continued to try and explain.

“Would understand?” she finished for him.

“Yeah,” Max sighed sadly.

They leaned against the jeep then, arms pressed against each other.

“Do you care?” Liz asked finally.

“No,” Max smiled.

“Me either,” Liz smiled back.

“Maybe we could…” Max suggested.

“Keep things quiet for a while?” Liz guessed.

“Yeah,” he grinned reaching down and taking her small hand in his own.

“I like the sound of that,” Liz said and then she giggled. “We could have secret dates.”

“Well we could and I mean no one would be suspicious because they think you’re dating Troy.”

“I might not be very experienced with guys but one movie hardly constitutes dating,” Liz huffed. “Besides if that was true, you’d be dating Natalie,” she pointed out. “You’re not, are you?” she asked then.

Max shifted uncomfortably. “I’m supposed to be doubling again with Zan on Friday,” he admitted.

Liz pulled her hand out of his grip. “Well then I guess you wont have time for me,” she replied crisply before moving to the passenger side of the jeep and getting in.

“Liz, please,” Max pleaded. “I only agreed because I thought you were seeing Troy,” he argued.

Liz’s anger immediately faded. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I didn’t even agree to go out with him again, Max. The only reason I went on Friday night was because I was home alone and sick of being lonely,” she admitted.

“I’ll tell Zan I can’t go,” he told her.

“No, don’t. That will just make him suspicious, but please don’t make any more?” she asked.

Max grinned. “I wont. The only girl I want to be taking out is you,” he said sweetly.

Liz’s eyes fell to Max’s lips then and she licked her own as she thought about the almost kiss.

“Liz?” Max questioned. He knew she was staring at his lips but he wasn’t sure if she wanted him to kiss her or not.

“Max,” Liz whispered.

Deciding to take the plunge, Max quickly closed the distance and gently caressed his lips against Liz’s gently.

Liz responded eagerly to her first kiss, her hands fisting in the front of Max’s shirt, effectively pulling him closer.

Max desperately wanted to deepen it but he had a feeling this was Liz’s first kiss and he didn’t want to push her to far.

“That was nice,” she whispered.

“Yeah, it was,” he grinned. He had a feeling that grin wouldn’t be disappearing for a while because he, Max Evans, was now dating the girl of his dreams.

Part 19

Three Months Later

Max whistled as he made his way down to breakfast. Lately he often found himself so happy that he couldn’t hide the grin of his face. Max and Liz had been dating for three months now, three glorious months in which Max now knew without a doubt he was in love with her.

It was definitely hard. They found it difficult to keep their relationship a secret from their siblings and to find time together but they were making the best of the situation, sneaking time in the eraser room at school as well as dates out to the desert where no one could see or bother them.

“You look happy, darling,” Dianne Evans commented as her son sat down.

Max looked up at his mother and softened his smile. “Yeah,” he shrugged. “Same as usual,” he told her.

“I just thought there might be a girl, that’s all,” she smiled. Dianne sometimes worried about Max. He didn’t date very much unlike Zan who had introduced quite a few girls to her over the past few months.

Max hated lying to his mother; he really wanted to come clean to them about what was going on. In fact, he had even gotten Liz to agree to it. They planned to do it at dinner a few night ago with everyone present but words from they’re mother soon stopped that.

”Thanks for having us over Nancy, it’s so wonderful that we can have these family dinners all the time.”

Max and Liz both fidgeted in their seats.

“It’s a pleasure,” Nancy smiled. “I feel as though we’re all one big family now. Don’t you agree kids?”

“Sure,” Zan agreed.

“Yeah, I guess,” Serena added.

“The situation was hard at first but I feel like I’ve gained another son and daughter,” Dianne smiled looking at Zan and Liz.

After that night, the topic of telling everyone was well and truly off the table, and now they settled for whatever time they could have together.

“Got to go, Mum. I’m taking Liz to school this morning,” Max said standing up.

“It’s early,” she pointed out.

“Yeah, I know, but we want to get some studying done,” he shrugged.

Dianne smiled proudly. “You’re such a good boy. Say hi to Liz.”

Liz was waiting in the jeep already.

“Hi,” Max smiled.

“Hi, yourself,” she replied.

Liz wanted to lean in and kiss him but she knew she couldn’t. Zan was suspicious and she new that her and Max were going to have to do something about it.

When they were a few blocks away Max reached over and took Liz’s hands.

“I hate this,” Liz whispered. It was getting harder and harder to keep the secret as well as finding time together. Worst of all next week was the homecoming dance and the rest of the girls were all going shopping that afternoon and they wanted Liz to join them. Sure a few guys had asked her but she had said no to all of them. Liz only wanted to go with one guy but she didn’t think it would be possible.

“I know,” he replied but when he cast a glance at her, he noticed that she looked sad today. “You ok?” Max asked.

“The homecoming dance is next weekend,” she said.

Max nodded. He knew that, but he thought Liz understood that they couldn’t go.

“I’m going shopping with the girls for a dress today,” she continued.

“You’re going?” he asked.

Liz nodded. “Will you take me?” she asked him.

“Liz, don’t you think too many people would think that was odd?”

Liz frowned. Truthfully, she didn’t care what everyone thought. At first she had been against telling everyone but lately she thought it might be easier if they told they’re friends.

“Maybe we should just tell them.”

“You want to tell our family?” Max asked shocked and surprised.

“I think we should tell Zan and Serena at least,” Liz replied. She hated keeping secrets from Zan and Serena.

“Do you think that’s a good idea?”

“Why not? They could help us out sometimes when we want to spend a little time together,” she shrugged.

“Do you think they would be ok with it?” he asked worriedly. He didn’t want Zan kicking his ass because he was dating his sister.

“I think so yeah,” Liz replied.

“I don’t know, Liz” Max sighed.

“We have to do something, Max, because I can’t continue like this,” she said sadly.

“What are you saying?” he asked. He had pulled into the school car parking lot now and turned off the engine.

“I’m saying that I want to be able to go out on dates with my boyfriend,” she sighed. “I want to go to homecoming with you.”

“I want that too, but we decided not to tell everyone because we didn’t think they would like it”

“They may never like it, Max!” Liz cried. They couldn’t hide forever. Things between them were relatively serious, Liz already knew that she was in love with him and she didn’t want to lose him but if they could never have an open relationship then maybe they shouldn’t be having one at all.

Liz looked out the window so that Max couldn’t see the tears that had begun to fall. Liz knew it wasn’t his fault but she was so over it.

“Liz,” Max reached out and took her hand but when she didn’t turn to face him, he reached out and turned her face.

Max’s heart fell when he saw the tears and he reached out and wiped them away with the pads of his thumb.

“Liz, baby, will you go to homecoming with me?” he whispered.

Liz broke out in a brilliant smile. “I would love to,” she told him.

Max smiled back. “Well go and get yourself a knock out dress and then tell me the colour so I match you.”

Leaning in, not caring that anyone could see them, Liz kissed Max gently. “Thank you,” she breathed out.

Max caressed her cheek “You’re welcome.”

“Oh that looks gorgeous on you, Isabel,” the girls all said when she emerged from the change room in a beautiful purple dress.

“Yeah?” She wasn’t so sure.

“Definitely and the colour is so unusual,” Liz pointed out.

Isabel smiled and looked at the colour again. “You’re right,” she nodded.

“So, Liz, what about you?” Maria asked.

Except for Liz, all the girls now had dresses. Maria was wearing royal blue, Serena was wearing black, and provided Isabel went with the last dress she was wearing purple.

Liz fingered the hot pink dress on the rack.

“That’s gorgeous you should try it on,” Serena told her.

“You think?”

“Yeah, you’ll knock his socks off.”

“Who are you talking about?” Liz played dumb.

Serena grinned at her sister. “You might think you’re good at keeping secrets but I’m on to you,” she whispered.

“Serena, no…” Liz began to object.

“It’s ok. Your secret is safe with me.”

“Thank you,” Liz smiled. “I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you.”

“It’s ok,” she told her. “I just want to see you happy, and the past three months the both of you have been.”

“Are you going to try that on?” Isabel interrupted.

“Um, yeah,” Liz told her taking her size of the rack and heading towards the changing room.

Whilst behind the curtain, putting the silky material on, Liz listened to the other girls outside talking about the suits Michael, Alex, and Kyle would be wearing.

“Liz, I forget to ask you if you decided who to go with?” Maria said.

“Um,” Liz said as she walked out and showed them her dress. She loved it, and the minute she saw it on, Liz knew it was the dress for her.

“Oh, Liz, that’s gorgeous,” Isabel gasped.

“You think?”

“Yeah that’s the one,” Serena agreed.

“Whoever you’re going with is one lucky guy,” Maria added.

“So who is it?” Isabel asked.

‘I’m not sure yet,” Liz lied. “I don’t want to go with Troy and give him the wrong idea and I don’t really know the other guys very well,” she said.

“You could always just go with Max,” Serena suggested with a small smile.

“Yeah that’s true,” Isabel agreed knowing Max probably wouldn’t even try to find a date.

“I’ll probably go with Max then. I’ll have more fun with him anyway and then we’ll all be together,” Liz told them.

“Oh, it’s going to be so much fun,” Maria squealed and the rest of the girls agreed.
