~*~ ~*~ ~*~ Liz ~*~ ~*~ ~*~

“This isn’t a nightmare, and I wouldn’t say you’re overreacting. This kind of response is to be expected,” I soothe. Telling her that she’s overreacting, whether she is or not, wouldn’t benefit the situation.

“I know you want to leave, but you can’t. It would be really bad if you just shot his idea down. He gave this some thought. It might not have been the best idea, but he wanted to share something with you that he enjoys. It just backfired. Maybe . . . Maybe you can sit for a drink, try it out, and then if it doesn’t get any better, ask if you can go somewhere else. You can say that you’d like to leave because . . .”

I look at Max, silently asking him to help me think of a way to extricate Izzy from this mess of a first date.

*Max*

I feel warm just seeing the smile that Liz gives me as I find her in the kitchen. I try to check that feeling, since I know it's not appropriate, but I'm still very pleased to see her. She's making cookies and she greets me fondly, saying that not much has happened. Not much? Isabel going out on a date with Kyle and there's 'not much' going on? Surely there's more details to tell than that. Maybe I can join in on the cookie baking like I did the other day? That was fun.

Before I can say anything-else to her, she's picked up the phone and is talking to Isabel. She's not talking to me, but I can pick up on enough of the conversation. Actually, the way she's repeating things, it's almost like she's trying to make sure I'm included.

Kyle took Isabel to a sports bar? Well, that sounds like the sort of thing Kyle would do. I can see it would be a bit of a stretch for Isabel, but it's enough to have her hiding in the bathroom? What kind of dive did Kyle bring her to? What did she think it would be like?

Oh wait. I bet it was a surprise, wasn't it? She was expecting a sophisticated place and got the bar. I wonder if Kyle went to the bar just 'cause it was his kind of place or did he actually plan to differentiate himself from Jake by not doing the expensive French restaurant thing? In either case, I'd think he'd done -- and way more than is going to be good for him. I can't believe he would do this to her. I'd like to chew him out, but I have a feeling that Isabel will have that covered herself.

You can say that you’d like to leave because . . .” Liz says, trailing off and looking at me.

Okay. So I am part of this. Think fast, Evans. What's a good excuse?

"... because she's allergic to the cigarette smoke?" I suggest. A sports bar is bound to be smoky. That could work.

Where would be a good place to stop and start the new thread? The page cap is fifty, right? Sometime soon, no?

~*~ ~*~ ~*~ Liz ~*~ ~*~ ~*~

“. . . because she’s allergic to the cigarette smoke?” Max suggests.

“I like that,” I say with a smile.

“Like what?! Liz!”

“Sorry, Izzy. Max suggests saying that you’d like to leave because of the smoke. People are smoking there, right?” That was good on Max’s part. And I don’t think that Kyle could fault her for that.

ISABEL

“Sorry, Izzy. Max suggests saying that you’d like to leave because of the smoke. People are smoking there, right?”

“Oh yeah they are smoking like cancer is the new fashion accessory.” I state, wrinkling my nose in disgust. I wonder if these people know how much damage they are doing to themselves and the people around them with that little stick. I nod my head at my reflection as I consider the idea. “It sounds like a plan. I like it and it won’t even count as lying. Right, okay, thanks for the help Liz.”

“Anytime, Izzy.”

“Give Max a kiss from me in thanks and wish me luck. I think that I‘m going to need it. I‘ll see you when I get back to the house. Bye.” I snap my phone closed, feeling so much better now that I’ve spoken to Liz and worked out a plan. So I’ll give Kyle a chance and if this date turns out to be as bad as I think it will then I will cough and choke til he takes me home.

Striding out of the bathroom, I quickly make my way through the crowd to where Kyle is sat back at our table with my lovely vodka. Sitting down at the table, I down my vodka in one shot before smiling at Kyle.

“Do you want another?” Kyle asks, looking at me as if I’m alcoholic. Hmm, maybe I should have drunk it a little slower.

“No, I’m driving.” I state with another smile. I can hardly tell Kyle that I needed that drink to get me through this date. I don’t want to hurt his ego. “So, this is a sports bar. I’ve never been to one before. Its uh…exactly how I imagined it would be. What made you bring me here?”

KYLE

“So, this is a sports bar. I’ve never been to one before. Its uh…exactly how I imagined it would be. What made you bring me here?”

I guess mentioning that my favourite football team is playing tonight won't be the best thing to answer here.

"Oh well, I was pretty sure you'd never been at one before and ... I like sport bars, you can watch a game, thanks to that you can always find something to talk about with anyone in here and ... like I said, I was sure you'd never been in one and this way, you can at least tell your friends back home that you've experienced this too."

I grin slightly when I see that my team scored before turning back to Isabel agian. "How do you like it so far?"

I frown at the back of Kyle’s head. That slimy little…he’s watching the damn game. I scan my brain and remember Michael mentioning something about a big game on tonight. No wonder Kyle bought me here. He wanted to have the best of both worlds.

"How do you like it so far?" He asks, finally tearing his eyes away from the big screen.

“Its different.” I say, wishing that I hadn’t bought my car. I could really use another vodka. He nods before looking back at the screen and cringing at God knows what. I hope it has something to do with his team losing. I really can’t believe that this is Kyle’s idea of a date. I mean, suddenly Michael is seeming so much more appealing and that’s just crazy. “But what to you do when someone doesn’t like sport. Doesn’t that really poke a hole in your 'you can always find something to talk about ' theory?”

I’m left with my mouth agape as she ends the call as quickly as she began it. She sounded a little calmer and a little less panicked. At least I hope so, for Kyle’s sake. I press the “off” button on the phone to hang up and put it back on the counter.

She didn’t mean it literally when she said to give Max a kiss did she?

“Crisis averted,” I say with a nod. “And she sounded grateful. Good thinking on the smoking excuse. I think she really liked that because she asked me to give you a kiss from her in thanks. And we’re both supposed to wish her luck,” I finish before returning to folding the chocolate chips into the cookie dough.

"Why would someone go to a sports bar then when he doesn't like sports?" I shot back. Where's the logic in that? I mean ... oh  This is great, first my team starts playing really really bad and now my date is unhappy too. If Michael ever learns of this ...

My eyes nearly bulge out as Liz mentions giving me a kiss, but she breeze right past it and turns her attention back to her cookie dough.

"Sure. Of course I wish her luck," I say. I want to ask more about how Isabel and Kyle ended up there, but I'm still thinking about the word 'kiss'. 'She asked me to give you a kiss.' Turning, I retrieve the cookie pans. It keeps my hands busy, allows me a short delay and if she lets me stay and help, I'll have a little more time with her.

"I take it the sports bar was a surprise?" I comment as I lay the pans down. Raising an eyebrow, I take a chance. "... and you're not going follow Isabel's instructions?" I tease in a friendly way.
