A/N - Look I'm back and its not a month *lol* Just wanted to say thank you to everyone reading, I know you all hate Suzanne and I won't try and change your mind. I appreciate the feedback and for those of you who are sticking with it...I will try not to disappoint :wink:

Thanks to Kara for the overview and suggestions *tigger*

Chapter 10

“Take me home, Max.” Liz stopped in her tracks the moment the door closed behind them. How did she not know her life was such a lie? How could her parents lie to her all this time? And why in the world did they allow Suzanne to treat her so badly, for so long? These questions ran rampant in her mind, and slowly were driving her insane.

“Liz, I’m so sorry.” Max turned to her, pulling her in his embrace. He wished he had better, more comforting words, but he didn’t. Instead, he respected her wishes and left with her clinging to his side, like a lost child, a few moments later.

The entire car ride home was met in complete silence, with the exception of the rain pouring outside. Liz had stopped crying long enough to allow fresh tears to pool at the sides of her eyes and roll down slowly. Max wanted to comfort her, but he wasn’t sure how to comfort someone who had just discovered her entire life was a lie, and people who were trusted more than anything had let her down and lied. Max knew what that felt like, but this was Liz…his Liz. And despite the fact that he had hurt her in the past, by pushing her away, he had never lied to her.

Watching her out of the corner of his eye, he reached out his hand and placed it on her knee. He knew that she truly needed to talk to her parents, and if she wasn’t ready for that, then at least Alex, but she had refused. It hadn’t escaped Max’s attention that Liz had requested he take her home…to his home. A small smile tugged on his lips, a home with Liz in it, nothing sounded better, except maybe Liz, his child, and him living together making their own home.

Max drove a few more miles, to a place he knew would bring a smile to her face. Pulling the car to a stop in front of the small park, he surveyed the area and then turned to Liz. Quickly he got out of the car and ran to Liz’s side, helping her out.

“Come on, baby.” He smiled brightly as the rain pelted down on his body.

“Max, it’s raining!” she giggled but stood outside beside him nevertheless.

“I know, but come on Liz.” Max tugged on her arm gently guiding, but stopped the moment she was beside him, closed the door and ran to the back of the car. Pulling out a blanket and umbrella he rushed back to her side.

Making the small trek to the small gazebo in the center of the park, Max took a seat, and then motioned for Liz to sit on his lap. He wrapped the thick wool blanket around her, making sure she wasn’t cold.

“You’re crazy,” she nuzzled his neck before resting her head on his shoulder. She was sure she would be freezing, but she should have known better. Max would never allow her to catch cold.

“But you love me this way,” he responded with a kiss on her temple. He pulled her closer and rested his hand on her belly.

“Max?” she whispered out in question.

“Yeah?”

“It doesn’t matter,” she stated knowing she was avoiding the conversation that would surely ensue if she let it fester too long in silence.

“What?” he questioned unsure of what she was referring to.

“Whether you slept with her or not, doesn’t matter. It’s not what is important,” she said tilting her head up to face him. He avoided her eyes; she knew he hated the fact that he couldn’t remember.

“I just wish…” he trailed off because honestly he didn’t want to think about it. He knew he shouldn’t put that much importance on one moment of weakness, if it happened or not, but it was important because he wanted Liz to know he never would have betrayed her.

“I don’t care if you did, Max. I understand and I should have been there for you, but I wasn’t. I’m just sorry that she took advantage of the situation, but I don’t care,” she finished, squared her shoulders and turned slightly in his arms. She reached up and cupped his face between the palms of her hands. How she had missed him, words could not explain. From his dark brown hair, resting against his forehead, his long eyelashes, his golden brown and so expressive eyes, down to the tiny beauty mark on his upper lip. She had missed everything about this man.

Max watched her watch him, and his heart began to beat quicker. It had been so long since she had looked at him that way.

“I love you, Liz. Sometimes I wish things would have been different, but then I look at you pregnant with our child, and I realize this is the way things were supposed to be. If I wished for anything in our lives not to have happened, I would be wishing away our baby. I could never do that, but I want you to know I’m here, Liz. I’m here for you, for both of you. I’m sorry that I don’t remember what happened, but I want you to know that I meant what I said. I never loved her, Liz. How could I, when I have spent most of my life in love with you?” His words were true and they were real and they were everything she needed to hear at that moment. For it was in that moment that Liz Parker realized no matter what happened in their lives from that moment on, she and Max would end up someplace different, someplace they never thought they would be…together.

“Did you want to sleep with her?” she whispered out, still holding his gaze.

“No! Liz I told you…” his words were muffled by her soft lips pressing against his.

“Then it doesn’t matter. Do you understand?” she questioned, wanting Max to understand her double meaning. And he did without a doubt at that moment. Max knew that she wanted him to understand that no matter what happened in the past, it was exactly that, the past. It was time they started living in the here and now and focus on the future they were going to create with their child.

They kissed one last time before leaving the park that day. By the time they made it back to the car, the heavens had opened up and the sun began to shine. It seemed as if someone knew that it was time for the tears to dry and the light of a new day to begin to shine.

******

“Do you understand what you did? Do you know what lying all these years has done to her?!” Alex roared. Max was in complete shock. Alex never raised his voice in all the years he had known him. Alex was calm and collected, and most importantly never drew a conclusion without having all the facts.

“Honey, just sit down and relax a moment,” Nancy spoke up finally. She didn’t like the way the information was divulged, but she knew better than to think that her husband’s secret would have stayed that way for much longer.

“Relax?! You know she’s pregnant and doesn’t need to be dealing with this on top of everything else! She deserves a break!” he hissed out venomously. He wanted the truth and he wasn’t leaving until he heard it, and then he would be there for his sister.

It was late in the afternoon, and Alex had arrived with his parents, looking to speak with Liz. Max had urged them to leave her alone, but Liz had stepped out from behind him and assured him it was okay. However, for the past twenty minutes, Alex and his father had been arguing back and forth. Alex now knew everything that Suzanne had told both Max and Liz and now it was his parents’ turn to explain, except they weren’t.

The last person to arrive was Isabel. She was prepared to leave, but Max urged her to stay. He needed to talk to her and knew that if worse came to worse, Isabel could remove Liz from the room. He knew that Isabel might have had ill feelings towards Liz, but she would never want anything to happen to her.

“What do you want to know?” Jeff Parker finally lowered his voice and took a seat across from Max and Liz. Alex stood, arms crossed and shoulders squared next to Max, while Isabel had taken a seat next to Liz.

When Isabel first arrived she wasn’t sure what she had walked into, but now she knew and she felt terrible…for Liz. Finding out that you were adopted the way she did, no one should have to find out like that. For the first time, Isabel turned to regard Liz. How tiny and fragile she appeared to her, but Isabel also realized that Liz was going to be a mother and Max a father. She watched their hands caress one another, and when someone would yell, how Max would squeeze her hand in reassurance. Even if they didn’t look at one another, they were supporting each other.

Then it hit her; she was going to be an aunt. Liz was having her brother’s child and she knew even if it wasn’t planned, Liz being pregnant with his child was a blessing for them all. Her heart broke for her brother; he had strived to feel like he belonged after their father left. Max was different after that. Isabel knew how much her brother loved Liz. One would have to have been blind to not notice the love they felt for each other, but circumstances kept them apart. No, not just circumstances, Isabel reminded herself. Suzanne had played a big role as well.

Isabel smiled one last time, watching them, knowing this time her brother wasn’t going to let her go. Even if she hadn’t spoken to him yet, she knew her brother loved Liz and the fact that she was pregnant with his child, she knew this was going to be their new beginning and she was happy.

Turning her attention back to the conversation, she eyed Alex longingly. She had missed him and wished that they too might have a new beginning.

“I want to know everything. From the beginning,” Liz spoke up softly as she pressed herself closer to Max.

Nancy decided to speak up first, to tell the part of the story she knew best. “As you know I had a difficult pregnancy with Alex. What you don’t know is that while I was pregnant with him, the doctors discovered that I had a tumor growing inside of me. I couldn’t be treated while I was still pregnant, so they tried to prolong the pregnancy as long as possible while I was still healthy. As the months passed, I became sicker and weaker, but I wouldn’t let them take him, not if he couldn’t survive. They told me it was a miracle that I didn’t miscarry…anyway I finally delivered him by C-Section and while I was in the delivery room, they had removed the tumor. However in doing so, they had to remove everything that would allow me to conceive or carry another child,” she explained as best as possible through her tears.

Liz’s tears began to flow slowly, just hearing what her mother had gone through. She might not have appreciated it as much if she herself wasn’t pregnant. Placing a hand on her stomach she looked to her mother to continue.

“It was for the next few years that I dealt with the knowledge that I wouldn’t be able to have any more children. I was thankful that I was blessed with one, so please don’t get me wrong. It was just difficult. It was during the time that your father and I were discussing adoption. We wanted a little girl,” Nancy paused and smiled at Liz.

“Your aunt Danielle came to me and told me that your uncle Rick was unable to have children. She was devastated, and I knew exactly how she felt. We had discussed in length the adoption process; the problem was she had wanted to carry the child herself. Again, I could sympathize and so we went to…” she trailed off. This was far more difficult explaining then she had planned. Everyone in the room began to squirm.

“So she was going to get what? Like artificially inseminated or something?” Liz asked, finally seeing what she thought was the whole picture.

“Right. But then the thought of it being a stranger’s was too much and because I was still dealing with my own problems, I discussed it with your father.” A sharp gasp came from Liz; she muffled her cry with her small hand.

“You asked daddy to do it?” she squeaked out and swayed against Max.

“I did,” Nancy confirmed.

“Why did you adopt me then? I don’t understand? Why couldn’t aunt Danielle carry a child for you and dad?” Liz tried to fit the puzzle pieces together. Yet again, however, she was coming up empty.

“I told you Liz. I wasn’t in a good place, and your father did it because I asked him to. He didn’t like it, but he did it. He signed over all his rights, because that is what we discussed, but…”

“I felt guilty, Lizzie. I felt like she was my child yet I had no rights to her. I had to pretend to be her uncle. So after that, your mother and I decided to move forward with your adoption. And I was so happy when we brought you home, but…” he trailed off trying to explain but falling short.

“You knew you had a daughter that you couldn’t claim,” Alex concluded for his father. It made sense, but it was still unjustifiable what Liz had to endure because of this.

Jeff nodded and dropped to his knees in front of his daughter. “I’m so sorry I let her be that way. I thought it was just the normal feud teenaged girls go through. But when your aunt and uncle died, I felt like I had my chance to have her. Do you understand what I’m saying?” he looked up with worried eyes to Liz.

“I know, but she hurt me so bad and you told me to let it go. That she didn’t mean it, but she did. She hated me for what she thought you did. She told me you cheated on mom, and then signed away your rights. She doesn’t even know the truth and because everyone that was supposed to protect us lied, I suffered. We all did,” Liz concluded sadly. Funny how Suzanne thought she had it all figured out, but how wrong she was.

“I’m so sorry. I can’t tell you how long I’ve wanted to tell you the truth, but the lie just grew and I let you down. Regardless of the fact that we adopted you Liz, you were still my daughter and my greatest disservice was overlooking you for Suzanne because I felt guilty. I know you probably won’t forgive me…”

“Or me,” Nancy added.

“I wish we could go back and fix things the right way.”

“Would you have wished Suzanne away?” she asked her voice small and shaky.

“No.”

“Then it doesn’t matter, dad. Maybe because I’m having my own child, I can understand how you both felt all those years ago. But when she started to become the person she is, and destroying my life, it was up to you as my parents to stop her. You didn’t though. She was more important. Maybe because…because she was a part of you and I’m not. Maybe I just wasn’t what you wanted from a daughter, or maybe…” Liz burst into tears a moment later, and Max quickly wrapped his arm around her, allowing her to rest her head against his chest. He drew small circles around her back, trying to calm her down. Max was moments from kicking everyone out of the house. He watched as Alex quickly moved behind the couch and rested his hands on her shoulders. Isabel too had placed her hand on Liz’s arm offering her what little support she could.

“God, Lizzie, that’s not it. We screwed up so bad honey, so bad and we don’t know how to make it up to you. We don’t expect you to forget everything that has happened over the years, but we hope that one day you can forgive us for our mistakes. We thought we had it under control, but we didn’t realize what turning our heads from what was happening was actually doing. Hurting you.”

Max however, couldn’t stand for her to hurt any longer. He turned to her, cupped her tear-tracked face and kissed her soundly on the lips. After pulling away, he smiled and swiped the tears from her face, and rested his forehead against hers.

“It doesn’t matter, Liz. Nothing matters because you have me and I have you. And together you, me and this baby,” he reached down and pulled her hand with his to lay on her protruding belly, “are going to love each other, forever.” He kissed her once more before lifting her in his arms and carrying her out of the room.

Placing her down on his bed, he kissed her again and covered her with a thick blanket. He sat with her until her tears subsided and she had fallen asleep. He stood and watched her sleeping form, knowing what he needed to do; he turned on his heels and marched into the living room.

*******

“You okay, Max?” Isabel asked after everyone had cleared out of the house. Max had ordered her parents to stay away, and that any contact that needed to be made, be made through him. He would not allow Liz to continue to stress and worry about things. She was pregnant and he would be damned if anyone hurt either Liz or their baby. Nancy and Jeff respected Max’s wishes and apologized once again. It didn’t matter to him; Liz was not going to have to deal with them until she was ready. Alex had left, promising to return in the morning with breakfast for everyone. Max had to get back to work and so he didn’t want Liz to be left alone while he was away.

“We make quite a couple, right?” he laughed self-deprecatingly.

“No. I think you make a great couple,” Isabel stated softly. Max turned to her in surprise.

“Who are you and what did you to do my sister?” he joked lightly.

“I’m sorry Max. I never gave her a chance after everything happened. You love her and its obvious she loves you and you’re going to be a father. That’s just wow!” Isabel smiled brightly nudging her brother lightly.

“I know. I still can’t believe it you know? When she came off the plane, and I saw her, my heart sank. I thought I was too late. She fell in love and was having another man’s child. I know how terrible that sounds, but God I think I would have died on the spot if she told me it wasn’t mine,” Max revealed to his sister.

“I bet. I have to say though, I still don’t understand how that even came to be,” she rolled her eyes teasingly.

“It wasn’t pretty Iz. Not at all, and she deserved so much better. We had such a terrible fight, the worst by far. She was yelling at me and just in my face with everything I had done, and then I went back at her, and then it happened. Afterwards, God she was so angry when I told her I wasn’t going to marry Suzanne,” he began to explain to his sister without the details.

“Wait? You told her you weren’t going to marry Suzanne? Why didn’t I know this?”

“Everything happened so quick, Iz.”

“I would have thought Liz would be happy that you weren’t going to marry Suzanne.” Isabel had tried to figure out exactly what Liz’s reasoning behind reacting to the news so harshly could have been.

“I thought so too. I was ready to tell her how in love I was with her. That night I was ready. But she just wouldn’t have it…” Max began and trailed off thinking about that night. It was the night their child was conceived, but there was nothing romantic or fairytale like about it.

“I’m sorry, Max. But you have your second chance.” Isabel placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

“I know and I don’t intend on wasting it.”

“How are you doing, Max?” she asked with her normal big sister worried tone.

“Actually, since Liz has been back I’ve been great. I don’t know, I just feel like I want to be better for her and the baby,” Max confided to his sister. He was still not over his father and that situation, but being with Liz truly made him feel better.

“I was my own worst enemy. Why was I so stupid?” he questioned aloud.

“Because you’re a guy Max. And to be honest, when it comes to matters of the heart sometimes we’re blind,” Isabel offered.

“Are we talking about Alex?” Max questioned knowingly.

“No,” she answered quickly.

“No? Isabel, you know you still have a thing for him. Why didn’t you ever move forward?” he questioned then added, “Not like I’m one to talk.”

“Max, you know Alex and I were going good and then he started to pull away. It was slow but I noticed. I thought we were going to be forever, but something happened,” Isabel finished trying to gather her things to leave. It was late and it had been a long day.

Max could see she was still upset about it. It had been over a period of four years that they had been dating. It had turned intensely serious two years ago and then fizzled out about a year ago. Isabel was still left wondering what happened, as was everyone else. When he questioned Alex, the only response he received was that it was something he needed to do.

Max suspected that there was more to this story than met the eye. He had a sneaky suspicion that Suzanne had something to do with it. He didn’t know how but he just knew it. It seemed as though the following week would prove to be quite as busy as this past.

After Isabel left, Max wandered back into the living room. Taking a seat on the couch, he looked to his left and saw the box Liz had handed him a few days ago. With all that had happened since then, he had nearly forgotten about it. Taking a moment, he decided to open it up and see what was inside.

The contents of the box were minimal. There was a letter addressed to him, another envelope and a videocassette. He decide to read the letter first…

Dear Max,

It’s funny how it seems that life is always full of surprises. It’s not an uncommon phrase, but I never knew how significant it was until a few weeks ago. It’s been a few months, and I wonder how you are, and I wonder if you are happy. Happy in your marriage. I truly hope that you are, no matter how much that might hurt.

I want you to know that I never meant to hurt you and I know now that my words did just that. However, that is not the reason for this letter or this package. I wanted you to know that in two weeks I’ll be coming to town and I want you to know that I’m coming to see you. I wish I had the courage to tell you this before I left. And now in this insignificant letter, I can’t seem to tell you either. So I decided to include some pictures and a video for you to watch. I think you should watch the video first…the pictures are for later.

Love,
Liz

He closed the letter and looked back into the box, pulling out the videocassette, he crossed the room and inserted it to view. A few moments later, he was back on the couch watching the screen intently, wondering what he would see. What would Liz have sent him on a video? In that instant, that’s when the image appeared.

It was his baby. He could see his child and hear the heartbeat perfectly. A second later he was on his knees, his fingers pressed up against the television, delicately tracing the outline of his child. His tears began to fall, and he turned to reach for the remaining envelope, opening it up he began to sob brokenly. They were pictures of the sonogram; she had sent him everything he had missed.

“Max?” came her soft voice filtering into the room from behind him. Max turned quickly and smiled up at her.

“You okay?” she asked concerned coming to kneel in front him. She finally looked at the television and saw the pictures in his hand.

“I’ve never been better, Liz.” He pulled her into his arms and kissed her lips softly.

“Thank you,” he whispered out to her as he continued to watch the television.

“Max…”

“Shh, let’s just sit here for a little while.” His voice was even, yet filled with such emotion. Liz smiled softly and nodded her head, allowing him to hold her as he requested.

“I love you, Liz,” he whispered out.

“I love you too, Max.” Her heart soared at his words. He always made everything better, which is why she knew this time they would be forever.

A/N - And so here I am with an update as promised! I'm telling you, after not writing for weeks I feel out of it *lol* Thanks to Kara for beta-ing this part! Love you *Tigger*

Thank you for all your feedback and your continued support, its greatly appreciated...and besides I love it *lol*

Okay...don't be too harsh...and as La'Shon said, she hopes that the hospital runs out of morphine for Suzanne...I'll see what I can do about that :wink:

Chapter 11

2 weeks later

“I’m really doing fine, Maria. Stop worrying.” Liz smiled into the phone from her place on the couch. Max had left for work earlier that morning and promised to stop by at lunch to check on her.

Things for the past two weeks had been somewhat hectic. Max had to return to work, reluctantly, and Liz had to find a local doctor and have all her records transferred from Germany. In addition to which she had to make necessary appointments for the doctor and hospital, in preparation for the delivery.

She had decided it was time to fill Maria and Michael in on all that had transpired within the last few weeks while back in the States. Maria had a hard time believing everything that Liz had found out about, but was there to support her nevertheless. Michael had gotten on the phone several times to make sure Liz was in fact doing as well as she had let on.

“When am I going to get to see you again?”

“If you want, as soon as you can get on a plane,” Liz hedged on softly. She really missed them and since it seemed she didn’t have that much family left that didn’t lie to her, she needed them around.

“You’re serious?” she asked happily.

“Very. In fact, let me just talk to Max this afternoon and I’ll call you tomorrow. I’d want you to stay here and…”

“No, Liz. We can’t do that. You and Max need your time alone.”

“Nonsense! You are my friends. I want you here. Please Maria,” Liz pleaded. It wasn’t so much that she didn’t want to be with Max alone. It was more of the fact that they would serve as a distraction from her parents.

“Okay, but if Max has reservations about it, then we won’t. I love you Liz, but you and Max do need your time,” Maria explained carefully, not wanting to upset her friend further.

“Promise.”

After her conversation with Maria, Liz decided to take a quick shower while she waited for Max to arrive.

“Hey Max,” Alex said as he entered Max’s office. Paper was thrown askew around the room, but that was a good thing he figured for someone in the construction business.

“Alex.” Max lifted his head to regard his friend.

“How’s Liz?”

“She’s doing pretty good. How about you?” Max asked as he shuffled through another stack of paper. He needed a secretary desperately.

“I’m doing okay. How’s Isabel?” Alex asked avoiding his friend’s eyes. He wanted to pretend that Isabel wasn’t back in town and that he didn’t think about her every waking moment…but he did.

“Isabel?” Max smirked and then breathed out a sigh of relief when he found the contract he was looking for. Things had gotten so hectic and now he was far behind. He didn’t think he’d ever catch up. This business was his bread and butter; it had to succeed, now more than ever. He needed to be able to support Liz and their child, which was his ultimate goal.

“Yeah, you know...your sister?” Alex chimed in with a roll of his eyes. He just knew Max would make this hard on him.

“She’s doing pretty good. She’s staying at my parents' house,” Max offered with a smile.

“Don’t look at me like that Max,” Alex warned.

“Like what? Alex, I know you still have a thing for her. So why pretend?” Max asked coming to stand in front of Alex.

“I don’t. Who said I did?” he feigned innocence.

“You did, with the way you look at her. What happened with you two?” Max finally asked the question he’d avoided for years. He didn’t want to get involved, but seeing as his life was messed with by outside influences, he just wanted to make sure his sister and his best friend didn’t fall prey to the like.

“We just grew apart I guess,” Alex shrugged indifferently.

“Yeah that’s bullshit,” Max offered with a nod and the crossing of his arms over his chest.

“Yeah…it is. What can I say?”

“How about you tell me the truth?” Max looked at his friend, giving him his silent reassurance that he’d support him in any way.

“We were going good, you know? Then I felt like maybe it was too good. I mean, what was someone like Isabel Evans doing with someone like me? I work with computers all day and…”

“You’re a genius? A very rich one at that, not that my sister would be influenced by that in any way,” Max added for good measure.

“Yes, but I know she’s your sister, but have you seen her? She’s gorgeous, and smart and damn it, funny when she wants to be! And her smile, God, Max she drives me insane.”

“So far I haven’t heard anything bad.”

“Bad? You want bad? What can I offer her? Someone like her shouldn’t be with someone like me,” Alex explained shrugging his shoulders half-heartedly. Sure, he was cute and funny but that wasn’t enough for Isabel.

“Offer her? Alex, Isabel is successful and smart. All you need to offer her is you. Why would you think that wasn’t enough? After four years, if she didn’t want to stick around she would have been gone long before that. She loved you Alex, and you broke her heart. Even if she won’t admit it. What I can’t understand is why?” Max stared at his best friend reading the array of emotions filtering across his face.

“You want to know why?” he laughed to himself. Max simply nodded.

“Because someone told me that I was kidding myself. And that Isabel would just grow tired of me. And I started to think about that and realized it was true.”

“Who told you this?” Max had a sneaky suspicion that this story had one person’s name written all over it.

“Suzanne.” Alex answered and then dropped his eyes to the ground. Granted, he knew that Suzanne was probably just manipulating him, but the truth was she was right. She was simply voicing aloud to him what he himself didn’t have the courage to say.

“Considering the source, I’d say you were an asshole for listening,” Max began but raised his hand when he saw that Alex was going to speak.

“However, already going through a similar situation myself, I can understand. The problem is, you created your problem by not believing in Isabel.”

“Isabel?” Alex was almost certain Max was going to say that he didn’t believe in himself.

“Yes. Isabel doesn’t know how to lie, Alex. You know this. She says what’s on her mind whether it’s positive or negative. The only time she has held back was when she was asked about you. And to be honest, I think she felt she wasn’t good enough for you” Max concluded quickly. That was the only viable answer to him.

“That’s insanity, Max!” Alex was taken aback by Max’s words. Surely, Max was mistaken.

“No it's not, Alex. It’s true. I guess my brother does know me better than I know myself,” Isabel spoke up from behind Alex a second later. She was making her way to her brother’s office when she heard them talking. Deciding to wait a few minutes for them to finish up, she stumbled upon their conversation about her and Alex.

“I-Isabel? What are you doing here?” Alex spun around, his face pale and his heart thundering in his chest. This was bad…very bad.

“Oh will you look at the time? I have to get home to Liz,” Max quickly ducked out of the room, leaving Isabel and Alex to settle things alone.

*****

“Liz, what are you doing?” Max asked the second he walked through the door and found Liz cleaning.

“Just dusting,” she offered with a bright smile. She missed him only after a few hours.

“You don’t have to and besides you shouldn’t be on your feet.” Max dropped the mail in his hands on the table beside the door and made his way over to Liz.

“Max, I’m pregnant not disabled,” she huffed out.

“I know that, smarty pants, but you’ve had a rough couple of weeks and I would feel better if you were off your feet as much as possible.” Max pinned her with a sexy smile and then added, “at least until you see the doctor.”

“Okay, but after he says I’m perfectly fine, you have to let me clean.” Liz crossed her arms over her chest and waited for Max’s response.

“Promise.” Max removed the duster from her hands, and pulled her into his arms. Smiling into her beautiful face, he leaned in and kissed her lips softly.

“Hmm…what was that for?” Liz said with her eyes still closed and a teasing smile tugging on her lips.

“That was because I wanted you to remember that no matter what, I love you,” Max teased her with his lips before sealing them to hers, kissing her harder than before. Needing to feel as though she were a part of him, he skimmed his hands over her delicate back and pressed his body against hers as best as possible. Liz sighed into his mouth when his fingers tangled in her hair, bringing their lips that much closer. Their breaths mingled as their tongues sought out each others'.

They continued to kiss and ended up on the couch with Liz straddling Max’s lap, their lips never leaving one another. Max continued to stroke her back being careful not to overstep his boundary. He had decided that no matter how much he wanted Liz, they couldn’t make love. It was too soon.

Liz wanted to feel more of him; she wanted to feel a part of him again. Leaning back, but never breaking the kiss, she skimmed her hands up the front of his shirt. Her nails scraped against his sun-kissed taught muscles, her tongue teasing his mouth and her hips grinding into his hardened body beneath her. 'It's too soon,' her mind shouted out to her, but her heart, oh her heart, wanted him desperately.

“Liz, we have to stop…” Max panted out a few minutes later. He had to be the voice of reason, as much as it pained him at the moment.

“No,” she shook her head seductively as she began to nibble on his neck.

“Liz,” Max groaned out and placed his hands on her shoulders.

“I’m sorry,” she apologized and began to move off of his lap, but his hands stopped her.

“Don’t be. I’m not. It's just we need to go slow,” Max reasoned with her, not wanting to upset her.

“I know.” Liz’s voice was small even to her ears.

“Hey,” he tucked a finger beneath her chin, forcing her to look at him.

“I want you, Liz. You can’t imagine how much, but this is all new to me and I don’t want to do anything wrong,” Max explained as their eyes locked.

“You won’t Max.”

“Yeah, you sound really sure of yourself,” he chuckled softly.

“I am. This time Max, it’s just you and me making our own decisions.” Liz smiled and placed a chastised kiss on his lips before standing.

“So besides clean, what did you do this morning?”

“I called the doctor’s like you wanted me to and we have an appointment Thursday. Then I called Maria.” Liz explained to Max that she had told Michael and Maria everything that transpired over the past few weeks as they worked together making some sandwiches for lunch.

“How’s work going?” Liz asked as she sipped on her water.

“It’s busy, so I can’t complain. But I think I need a secretary. The paperwork is eating me alive,” he joked.

“I can help you…why are you shaking your head?” Liz pouted.

“Because you’re pregnant and…” Max stopped mid-sentence when Liz glared at him.

“Max, it wouldn’t take me more than a week to get your papers in order. And I’ll only do it until you find someone else,” she studied him carefully. Her heart was soaring at the thought of Max being so worried about her. She missed that.

“Would it matter if I said no?” he asked playfully.

“Nope!” she smiled brightly.

The two finished up lunch and Max needed to get back to work, but before he left Liz asked him to wait a minute.

“Yes?” he asked from the front door.

“I wanted to know if it would be okay if Maria and Michael came here for about two weeks or so? They were going to stay at a hotel but…”

“Liz,” he interrupted her and smiled as he watched her fiddle with the edge of her shirt and nibble on her bottom lip. She was sexy as hell to him at that moment.

“Yeah?” she looked up to regard him.

“They should stay here. They are your friends,” he offered with a bright smile.

“Max?” she asked a moment later.

“Do you want me to stay here?” she asked in a small voice and Max froze. What did she mean by that? Had he made it seem as though he didn’t want her there, he wondered wildly.

“Of course! Where is that coming from?” he questioned stepping into the living room, dropping to his knees in front of her.

“I just thought maybe…you wanted to take things slow and maybe that would be too hard with me here all the time.”

“Liz, I might want to go slow but I want you here with me. I don’t want you anyplace else…unless you don’t want to live here with me?” he finished looking away preparing himself for disappointment.

“I want to be here, Max. You’ve been really great these last few weeks, now that the truth is finally out and I just want to make sure.”

“Liz, I’m doing better and I feel better. I even went to therapy and told him everything. He says that I made a breakthrough and I told him I didn’t. He was confused and I told him that you helped me see things better. I’m not cured but I’m feeling better.”

“That’s great. So…” she hedged on cautiously. The next thing she would say might just be going too fast for him.

“So?”

“You only have a two bedroom,” she let the implications of her words settle in the thick air around them.

“Right. Well, I can sleep on the couch.” Max recovered quickly. Hell, he couldn’t think about sharing a bed with Liz, no matter how badly he wanted to.

“Oh…okay. Sure.” Liz finished sadly. It was too much; she knew it, so why was she so disappointed?

“Liz, it's not that I don’t want to, but…”

“I know, Max. Too soon.” She smiled despite her fears. Maybe he wouldn’t ever be ready.

“Stop it, Liz,” Max reprimanded her coolly.

“What?”

“You know what. I want to, but we just need time to get on the right track.” Max leaned in and kissed her lips softly.

“You are so beautiful. Have I told you that today?” he whispered into her ear, before placing a kiss on her temple.

“No, you didn’t,” she blushed.

“Now I have. I love you and I’ll see the two of you later,” Max smiled and kissed her belly softly before leaving the house.

Her heart longed for him, but she would give him time.

A/N - And so here is the update. I'm very happy to see you guys didn't miss Suzanne *lol* In any event, I have to say that I planned on bringing Maria and Michael into this part, but it just didn't work out that way. I have to complete some loose ends, but they will be in the next part.

Also, once again this has not been to the beta, so I will come back and correct the mistakes.

Thank you all again for your feedback!! Quite encouraging and just so you know this story isn't going to be much longer, but as some of you know I am working on a few things right now, and at least one of them should be ready when this story ends :wink:

Chapter 12

The room was filled with an uncomfortable silence. How sad, she thought. Years ago the electricity created whenever she was in the room with him was palpable. She watched him closely; he looked the same; tall, dark hair, light eyes and a smile hiding behind his discomfort. This was her Alex, and she had missed him deeply.

“This is funny isn’t it?” she asked after a few minutes longer. The silence was threatening to kill her.

“What?” he asked, taking a quick glace at her. She looked just as beautiful as ever. Her long dirty blonde hair hung just below her shoulders, flowing freely and looking soft to the touch. Her brown eyes sparkled with a renewed sense of awareness, and her smile was enough to make his knees weak.

“That we used to be a couple and now we can’t even stand in the same room with each other without feeling self conscious.” Isabel eyed him carefully; sure enough he was slowly bouncing from one leg to another, a clear sign that he was nervous.

“Yeah, I guess. I have to go…” he rushed out. Not wanting to hurt her, but not knowing what else to say.

“I miss you, Alex,” she breathed out softly. Almost hoping he’d miss her declaration.

He stood rooted to the ground, had he heard her correctly? He spun on his heels and faced her. Swallowing thickly he closed the gap between them, framed her face in his hands and waited until their eyes met.

“I’m sorry, Isabel. I should have told you. I shouldn’t have walked away the way I did, but it was for the best,” he offered gently, but was surprised by her outburst that followed.

“The best for who?! Me?! You left me. You didn’t even tell me what I did wrong,” she bit out angrily. Not realizing that it still affected her so deeply. Maybe, she thought, if she didn’t still love him it wouldn’t have mattered. But it did, more than she wanted to admit.

“Bella…”

“Don’t Bella me! You lost the right to call me that long ago. Now I want to know what I did wrong. I don’t care what your deranged sister told you, why didn’t you believe me?” she fought back her tears, although they were clearly evident in her voice.

“I didn’t believe that you would want to marry me, Isabel.” He began as he moved across the room to take a seat in one of the many chairs in Max’s office. Never looking back at her, he tried to explain himself.

“Marry you? Alex, what are you talking about?” she asked in a confused whisper. She turned to face him, propping herself up on her brothers desk.

“It was the day before we broke up,” he started looking anywhere than at her. “I had planned the entire day. I knew where we were going to eat, I knew what I would wear and I knew how I would ask you to marry me.” Her sharp gasp caused him to raise his eyes to her. He knew this would hurt her, but she needed to know that it was nothing that she did that caused him to turn away.

“I had been thinking of asking you for an entire year, but slowly the more I thought about it, I knew I was probably kidding myself. That you wouldn’t want someone like me for a husband,” he confessed with a shrug of his shoulders. He watched carefully under hooded eyes, as she slid off the desk and came to kneel in front of him.

“Alex, you were so wrong.” Finally Isabel began to cry. How did she not know?

“Suzanne, had been telling me for months that I was wrong, that I wasn’t in love with you, but rather infatuated with you. And I know that she was wrong, so I dismissed everything she said. But then, she struck a cord inside of me. And that’s when I decided it was useless, that you would wake up five years from then and realize that you were unhappy with me.”

“That’s where you were wrong, Alex. I was afraid you would wake up and realize that you married me, Isabel Evans, nothing more. Just who you wanted to see. You thought I was perfect, and I wasn’t Alex.”

“Yes, Bella you are.” He smiled despite her tears.

“You are the smartest, most beautiful woman I’ve ever met, and I…” he couldn’t tell her. She wouldn’t want to hear it. It was too late.

“What?” she pleaded softly.

“I missed you too and I…I still love you. I know I ruined us and for that I’m sorry…” Her lips against his muffled his words. Her tears continued to slide down her flawless cheeks, and her tears turned into deep seeded cries when she felt him wrap his arms around her, pulling her into his lap.

Their lips crashed against one another’s, reacquainting themselves, and allowing their love to flow freely, without any barriers. Alex pulled her closer, if possible, and threaded his hands through her soft hair. In that moment, he cherished her and prayed that he had another chance with her. Pulling away, Isabel rested her head against his, their breathing labored and their upper bodies still pressed against one another’s.

“Alex?” she whispered out in question.

“Yeah?” he asked, his heart thrumming roughly in his chest. This would be the time she would say it was too late.

“I love you. And…I don’t care what happened before. I see my brother and how happy he is despite everything he and Liz have gone through. And now they are going to have a baby, and it just made me realize that I need you Alex. I want you to trust me when I tell you that I want no one but you.” Isabel pulled back slightly to regard him. His love for her shown through his eyes and she couldn’t help but smile brightly.

“Bella, I have loved you my entire life. Before Max introduced me to you, I had already fallen in love with you. I never thought you would look twice, but you did and I guess that scared me. Just seeing all that my sister and your brother have gone through just these past few weeks, I know that being honest is really important. And I want to make you a promise. If you give me a second chance, I promise to trust you without question and if something is bothering me, I will tell you. I just can’t lose you again,” he declared, his eyes locked on hers.

“You never had to ask, Alex.” Alex smiled and pulled her against him, kissing her and making a promise that soon she would be his forever. He had wasted enough time, and if he’d learnt anything from the experience his sister had gone through, it was how easily time could be wasted.

*****

The days had come and gone so quickly. And Liz was idly counting the days down that Maria and Michael would arrive. Today, however, was a very special day. Today she and Max would get to see their child for the first time together and if all went well, they would find out if they were having a girl or a boy.

“Liz, we haven’t picked out any names.” Max groaned from the front seat of the car. They were on their way to the doctor’s office and Max was completely panicked. He wasn’t sure what to expect.

Liz giggled softly as she reached out her hand to his. “Max, baby we don’t need a name yet. First we’ll find out what we’re having and then we can discuss names.” Liz smiled reassuringly at him.

“Right. That makes sense.”

“Relax, it will be fine.” Liz squeezed his hand.

“What if it isn’t?” he rushed out.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean what if there is something wrong with the baby? God! Liz I am so terrified and you’ve been under so much stress and…”

“Max pull over,” she nodded towards the shoulder of the road. Doing as she wished, he pulled over and cut the engine.

“Look at me,” she urged gently. She knew he wasn’t trying to scare her; he was simply terrified that the other shoe would drop. She understood, but she had faith in them and she knew if he would relax himself enough, he would realize that nothing would break them apart.

“Everything is going to be fine, Max. I feel great and the baby agrees because it’s moving all around right now.” Max’s eyes fell from hers to where their child lay. He reached out his hands and rested them on her. A smile graced his face a second later.

“Wow! That feels so amazing. Does it feel that way for you too?” he asked with wild eyes.

“It does. It felt weird at first, but then it became sort of comforting you know? I feel like the baby is happy. Like it knows when you are around, it moves around so much when I’m near you.” Liz explained and watched as the tears began to gather in his eyes. She knew her suspicions were right.

“Max, you are not him.”

“I know.” He looked away. He didn’t want to have the same conversation with her again. He didn’t want to be weak in her eyes.

“No, Max. I know you think that you can’t be a father to this baby. Not a good one.” She watched as he began to protest, but she pressed on.

“I know because I felt the same way, when I found out. I thought, how can I be a good mother? I don’t know the first thing about being one. Then you know what?”

“What?” he turned to face her.

“I went to the doctor and I heard the heartbeat and I fell in love.” Max nodded his understanding.

“Do you love me?” she asked attaining the reaction she wanted from him.

“Yes. God, Liz I love you so much.”

“Then you will be a great father.”

“I’ve let you down before, what makes you think I won’t let our baby down?” he questioned meekly.

“Simple. I trust you with my heart and more than anything, regardless of what you think, you are a great man.” Liz smiled and pulled him closer, placing a soft chastised kiss against his lips.

Max didn’t say another word after her declaration. In fact, he had made a decision that he wouldn’t let Liz and their child down. He would try his best; even if he had to struggle everyday to be the man she had just spoken about. Liz was smart, and surely he had decided, she wouldn’t waste her time on him if she didn’t believe what she had said.

****

“Do you hear that, Max?” Liz smiled passed her tears. Their baby’s heartbeat reverberated throughout the room. Max had stood still the moment the doctor asked him if he was ready to hear his child’s heartbeat.

“It’s so fast,” he trailed off in concern.

“Mr. Evans, that is perfectly normal. Now, the big question is, are you ready to find out what you’re having?” the doctor asked, watching both Max and Liz exchange a smile, and then nod their approval.

“Okay, let’s see.” The doctor moved the device over Liz’s belly, until he could tell the sex of the baby.

“Well?” Max asked anxiously. Was the doctor holding them in suspense for fun? It was killing him. He had already seen his child, and heard the heartbeat, now he wanted to know if it was a girl or a boy.

The doctor turned and smiled. “Your baby has outdoor plumbing.”

“So, that’s a boy right?” Max asked and then realized the ridiculousness of his question.

“Yeah,” the doctor chuckled. “You are having a boy. Congratulations!”

“Max…” Liz pulled his hand down, wrapping both of hers around it. Max couldn’t speak. He was having a son. He and Liz were having a little boy. God, he was so happy he hadn’t missed it.

“Liz, we’re having a boy!” A smile broke out across his face and he leaned down to pepper her face with kisses.

“I love you, so much Liz. We have to celebrate!” Max said as he helped Liz get dressed after the doctor left.

“How about dinner? We should go someplace special.” Max didn’t let Liz get a word in edgewise ever since they’d left the doctors office. He had allowed her to tell him when the next appointment was and that was it. He was on a high, and honestly, Liz couldn’t have cared less. Max was happy and for her, that was enough.

*****

“So a son?” Alex said while he and Max stood outside on the Evans’ porch. Once Max had called Isabel and his parents to tell them the good news, they had insisted that he and Liz come over for dinner. Mrs. Evans wouldn’t accept anything less. Max had then promised Liz he would make it up to her.

“I know. I’m telling you Alex, I never thought it was possible to be so happy in my entire life. I swear it wouldn’t have mattered if the doctor said it was a girl. In fact, I was just thinking about what she would look like.” Max allowed his mind to wander as he sat back, lifting his legs to settle against the porch railing.

“Long brown hair like Liz, your eyes, her lips, your skin tone…” Alex rattled off the image of Max and Liz’s daughter, or so how he had pictured she would look like.

“Exactly. Just perfect. But a boy, I can’t tell you that I’m not happy about it.” Max confessed distantly.

“Max, you are going to be a great father. Your son is never going to want for anything, and more than anything you and Liz are going to love him unconditionally.” Alex reached out a hand and placed it on his best friends shoulder, offering him the support he knew he needed.

“Thanks. I didn’t tell Liz, but it scares me. I felt like if it were a girl then it would be something new. Having a son, it is different for me, you know?” Alex simply nodded.

“I would never toss my son to the side for anything or anyone. Not even Liz. Don’t get me wrong, I love Liz, she’s like my air but my child, I would die for in a blink of an eye. I love him so much already and I can’t wait to meet him. But there is a part of me that wonders if I make a mistake, if he won’t want me as his father.”

“Max, you can’t think like that. I’m sure Liz has tried to drill this into your head, but you are not your father. Look at Liz, despite what Suzanne did, what our parents did, she is still sweet and lovable and so forgiving. And you, she’s crazy about you. She always has been. If you let her, she will be there for you, but you can’t push her away. I learned that the hard way, as have you. Give yourself a break Max, you don’t have to have all the answers right now.” Alex offered what little advice he could. Knowing he would never understand Max’s feelings towards his father.

“Thank you, Alex. I don’t know what I would have done these past few years without you. I hope one day, I can make it up to you.” Max smiled laying a friendly punch on Alex’s arm.

“You already did,” he offered with a mischievous smile.

“What?”

“Earlier with Isabel. We’ve decided to give it a go.”

“Its about damn time! I thought I was going to have to lock the two of you up in a room without food, or water and make you beg for…”

“Okay smart ass, I got the point.” Alex rolled his eyes as he stood.

“For what its worth, I think things are finally looking up for all of us.”

“You know, I think you’re right.” Max smiled as he leaned back, closing his eyes and not for the first time that day, smiled. He was happy. He was having a baby. Now all he needed to do was get himself together enough to be with the love of his life.

“Baby steps, Max. Baby steps,” he mumbled to himself as the silence of the night surrounded him.

A/N – I’m sorry for the long wait on this one. But when I sat to write this chapter up, which is about 12 pages typed, I had to decide what was left to do and how I wanted the story to come to a close. I didn’t expect it this soon, and I’m sure you didn’t. There were some things I had tossed around to throw in, but it would have taken away from the story I was trying to tell. The problem with making a plan for a story, is that when it is done…its done and forcing another chapter about something or another would have been a disservice to the readers.

So, there is some M/M interaction in here, but not as much as I would have liked to have, but only because I think what I have included was enough and satisfactory to me. I can only hope you feel that way as well.

This was one of the hardest stories for me to write, mainly because Max and Liz weren’t together from the beginning. And I say that in the sense where, in other stories I’ve flashed back to their love…the flashbacks I used in this story weren’t happy ones and that was my intention. I’m a dreamer and so I hope you’ve enjoyed the story as it unfolded.

There will be an epilogue, and it will be fairly long, but you’ll have to give me about two weeks to write it. I have a lot on my plate right now in RL and I don’t want to short change a story I’ve worked really hard on.

Thank you again to everyone that has left me feedback in some shape and form. I again, appreciate that you take the time out of your lives to join my world for a few minutes at a time.

Chapter 13

“Liz, if you continue to pace you will wear a hole in the floor.” Max joked lightly from his place on the couch. They were waiting to leave to pick up Maria and Michael from the airport. Max didn’t want to confess, but he was terrified to meet the both of them. Surely, he knew they knew about his past relationship with Liz. Would they accept him?

“Oh all right, but can we leave now? I can’t wait anymore,” she said turning to face him. She knew he was nervous. Taking a few steps she took a seat beside him, wrapping her hands in his.

“They are going to love you!” she announced giving him a smacking kiss on his cheek.

“Right, I bet.” He shrugged.

“Max, do you think I made you out to be a monster or something?” she asked softly.

“No, of course not. But Liz, I got you pregnant before I got married to your sister. That is hardly cause to like someone you’ve never met,” he offered meekly.

“Max Evans, you stop right there. I love you. Remember that if nothing else. I never stopped, and both Maria and Michael know this. Max, you think they wouldn’t understand? Just wait until you meet them. You are going to love them.” Liz reassured him that despite the fact that Max had never met Maria or Michael, they had something in common.

Max couldn’t help the smile that tugged at his lips. He turned and pulled her delicate form into his arms and hugged her. “I don’t know how I lived without you,” he whispered out to her, sealing his lips with hers. He kissed her softly at first, and it slowly grew into something much more intense. It had been a few weeks since his talk with Alex, and even though he knew his body was ready to move forward, he needed to make sure it didn’t end up the way the last time they were together did.

Liz gave her all to his kisses. She couldn’t get enough of them, and she hadn’t realized how much she missed them until then. Of course, he had kissed her several times over the past few months, but there was something different in his kisses that day. Not only could she feel his heart thrumming steadily and strong against her chest, she could feel the pent up energy as he sifted his hands through her long hair. He wanted her, but he was fighting it.

Could she blame him? Hell no. Especially since the last time they were together intimately, they created a child, but it was a less than memorable experience. She was sure that the main reason he didn’t want to move forward, wasn’t only his hesitance of doing something wrong, but more so the fact that he was harboring ill feelings about their last time.

“Max,” she pulled away gasping his name.

“Yeah?” he asked sitting up straighter with her still planted comfortably in his lap.

“Do you remember…the last time?” she asked in a hushed whisper. She knew he did, but she felt it was the one last thing they had avoided talking about for long enough.

He swallowed thickly at her question. He did not want to think about it, let alone discuss it with her, but he knew better. His Liz wanted to talk about it.

“Yes,” came his quick and short reply.

“Me too. I want our next time to be different, but I don’t regret it.”

“Me either. I was so r-rough with you, Liz. I was terrified I had hurt you and…” he trailed off feeling the guilt creep up his spine. Liz quickly captured his face in her hands and forced him to look at her.

“Max, it wasn’t our normal love making, I can admit that. But, don’t you know that I didn’t love you any less because of it? In fact, I loved you more because of it. At the time I was so angry with you, but if I’m honest I was angry with myself. Regardless, Max I was with you and a part of you in those moments we were together. It was raw and emotional but it was us. You and Me. That’s all I’ve ever wanted. I wanted your honesty and I got it that night.” She confessed something she’d never had the nerve to aloud. She knew it was something that he needed to hear, as well as herself.

“You really mean that don’t you?” he questioned in awe, but she knew better than to answer.

“I can’t say that I wasn’t scared, Liz. That we could be that explosive, but that’s why I told you I couldn’t marry Suzanne. We had been together before, but it was nothing like that.” His voice quivered slightly at the thought of that night.

Liz pressed her head against his chest and smiled. They both took that moment of silence to remember that night all over again…the night they created a life…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What are you doing,” came his somewhat slurred question.
“Max, I think you know,” she smiled brightly at him. She was a little tipsy, but far from completely drunk. Reaching for his belt buckle, she heard his gasp and she couldn’t help but smile.
Looking down into her beautifully flushed face, he couldn’t control himself a moment longer. She had been teasing him for the past hour and it was too much for any male’s body to ignore. Letting his hands fall to her waist, he pulled her flush against his body and leaned down to nip on her neck delicately. Then, as she slowly reached into his jeans, he’d just about lost it. His teeth sank into the soft flesh of her neck, and his hands began to drag her shirt up over her head.
“I want you so bad,” he mumbled out against her temple. She had pulled his pants down to the floor, and was working at his boxers, which he knew weren’t far from meeting the same fate as his jeans. Lifting her up in his arms, he turned and pinned her against the wall, reaching up under her skirt, he dragged his hands up and ripped the small cotton panties he knew she had under there.
“Max…”
“Why Liz? Don’t let me do this…” he panted against her heaving chest. She wriggled beneath his hands and he gritted his teeth.
“Do you want me?” she asked kissing a hot, wet trail up his exposed chest.
“Yes…but…”
“But what? You’re marrying that bitch? I don’t care! You’re mine, Max. I deserve my last time with you.” She drowned his response with a rough kiss, her hands coming around his neck and her legs wrapping tighter around his trim waist.
“Tell me I’m yours, Max,” she panted against his neck as she felt him reach between their grinding bodies. Slowly at first and then when she repeated the question, a bit gruffer, he plunged his body into hers in one forceful thrust.
“Tell me, damn it!” she ground out through clenched teeth, even as he drove into her steadily…roughly. His body slamming her into the wall, but she was immune to it. She was out to prove one thing and one thing only.
“You’re mine…baby…all mine…” he panted out as his body worked to exhaustion to pull them over the edge.
“Yes…Max…” she moaned out, throwing her head back allowing him to place biting kisses into her delicate flesh. She felt incredible around him, and he loved her without a doubt. He knew it was wrong…he knew that nothing would come of it.
“I love you…” he whispered out hoarsely as both of their bodies finally gave into their explosive releases.
Slowly, their bodies slowed from trembling and he released her to stand on her legs. He pulled her skirt back down and reached down to grab her shirt. She took it thankfully, but never looked at him.
Raking his hands through his hair, finally he found a voice to speak. “I can’t marry her, Liz.”
“The hell you will, Max! What just happened was mistake. A big fucking mistake. I wanted you to know what if felt like to give your all to someone and get nothing in return,” she bit out angrily, pulling her shirt over her head and searching for her shoes.
“What?!” He blurted out, the drunken haze that clouded his judgment a few minutes ago had dissolved. He reached out for her arm delicately, and pulled her to face him.
“You’re kidding me right? Liz, we just…”
“Had sex, Max. It was fun, but now its over, just like we are. Then again,” she laughed sardonically, “we were never together, right?” She smiled despite the tears that had already begun to stream down her face.
“I love you, and I’m not marrying her,” he vowed seriously.
“Marry her! She’s a bitch and you’re an asshole, I’d say it was a match made in heaven!” she shouted out as her tears continued to spill down her face. She didn’t mean it, not a single word. But now she just felt ridiculous. She had just made love, regardless of how it occurred; it was still love to her. And he didn’t want to marry her sister. He told her he loved her…and now she needed to do what was best for her.
“And what are you?! All you ever do is force me to do shit, Liz. Every time we are going good, you throw something in my face! How do you think it makes me feel?”
“Don’t worry about it, Max. This is the last you’ll hear from me,” she rolled her eyes dramatically, hoping to leave the room but he had other plans.
“Liz…God…don’t leave. Please, I love you and…” he searched for the words. Deep down he needed to say something to keep her. He wanted to tell her he couldn’t live without her, but she beat him to it.
“I hate you. I don’t know what I ever saw in you,” the words tumbled from her lips unexpectedly. They weren’t true. She knew they weren’t.
He remained silent, unable to wrap his mind around the fact that, he’d actually made her hate him. The one person he cared about in this world…hated him. And it was all his fault. Nodding his head, he released her and turned towards the bed.
She watched the tears gather in his eyes, and she willed her heart to stop racing. Knowing that now he would go through with it, she left the room without another word.
Sitting in the silent room, he allowed his tears to wash over him. She left, she hated him, and now she took his heart with her as well.
He had nothing and that was because he was nothing.
They both broke free from their thoughts of the past. They both were unrecognizable to themselves, then. Max slowly wrapped his arms around her waist and nudged her cheek softly.
“I didn’t tell you that I didn’t want to marry her because we slept together,” he confided gently.
“I know that, Max. And I want you to know that I didn’t mean a word I said. I was just angry and hurt, but I shouldn’t have said all those horrible things.” She looked up with sad, teary eyes, willing him to forgive her.
He smiled, he understood and there was no need for forgiveness. They were past that now, stronger even, because of it.
“I want you to know that I love you Liz. I know I’m not all together, but I’m trying.”
“What are you saying?” She looked up and searched his face for an answer.
“I’m saying, I want to be with you, Liz. If you’ll have me.” He took a deep breath and willed his heart to steady. He was taking a big step, a very big one and he hoped that she was with him, because God knew he couldn’t do it without her.
“I’ll have you, Max.” She smiled brightly at him and kissed his lips lovingly.
“There they are!” Liz practically yelled while pulling Max towards the gate at the airport.
“Look at you! You look so pregnant!” In classic Maria form came her response to seeing her best friend the first time in months.
“Maria, I was pregnant before I left.”
“Oh I know that silly girl, but I just mean I can really tell now. You look like you’re glowing,” Maria said as she wrapped her arms around Liz. Both girls shared a squeal of excitement, while Michael and Max watched.
Max however, was trying to smile at Liz’s enthusiasm, but couldn’t help but wonder what was going on in Michael’s head. The guy was slightly taller than him, his hair was a light brown, and he wore a smirk. That was odd, but hell what did he know? Hopefully, they accepted him. Not that it mattered, because on the way to the airport he had decided that no matter what Liz’s friends thought of him, he wasn’t letting Liz go.
She was his, he thought stubbornly.
“Where are my manners?” Liz blushed as she walked over to stand beside Max.
“Max, this is Maria DeLuca, and Michael Guerin. Maria, Michael, this is Max Evans.” Liz smiled proudly up at him. Maria and Michael gave each other a knowing smile before greeting him.
Maria couldn’t deny that Max was a good-looking guy. Liz definitely had great taste, she thought, but poor thing, he looked like a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming semi.
Noticing his discomfort, Michael decided that seeing how happy this guy made Liz, that we was okay in his book. But he would keep an eye out on him, and if anything, he’d just sic Maria on him, he thought with a satisfied smile.
“So, Max what do you say we get the luggage? I don’t know about Maria, but I’m starving.” Michael decided to break the ice.
“Yeah, sounds good.” Max managed a smile as he followed Michael to the baggage claim area.
“God! You didn’t tell me he was hot!” Maria drawled out as she watched the men gather the luggage.
“Yes, I did!” Liz retorted.
“Okay, you did. But I just figured it was metaphorically. You know, you love him so of course you’d think he was good looking.” Maria wrapped her arm around Liz’s shoulder as they followed the guys out to the parking garage.
“Well, now you know. He’s hot.” Liz smiled mischievously.
“Yeah? So, how hot is he? Have you slept with him yet?” Maria asked bluntly.
“W-what?! No, we haven’t.” Liz blushed as they finally made it to car, hoping that neither Max nor Michael overheard their conversation.
“What are you waiting for?” Maria whispered out, when they finally made it into the backseat.
“Hey, what are you guys whispering about?” Michael asked after a few minutes of hearing the girls’ whispered wording.
“Max’s cute butt,” Maria announced and burst out laughing when the car suddenly swerved.
“Maria!” Liz groaned out and watched as Max watched her in the rearview mirror, blushing brightly. She thought he looked adorable.
After that little outburst they all sat back and enjoyed the ride, all lost in their own thoughts. Liz, however was focused on the man in the front seat. Absentmindedly she rubbed her protruding belly and smiled at how good life was turning out.
****
“That’s just bullshit! You’re not even telling the story right,” came Max’s outburst about a story Alex was trying to retell. Isabel and Alex had joined them for dinner at Max’s house, later that same evening.
“No?” Alex laughed behind his beer. Finally, he thought, Max was loosening up around Liz’s friends. It was good to see him that way, he thought.
“No. Let me tell it,” Max turned to everyone and took a swig of his beer before beginning.
“So, Liz was sitting in her parents living room watching some lame ass scary movie. Alex was on the floor and Isabel was lying down next to him. The room was pretty dark, but what I didn’t know was that Liz was holding a huge glass of soda and popcorn in her lap,” Max began to laugh before he got to the end of the story, as well as Liz and Isabel. Alex was the only one not laughing since what came next had to do with the outcome of the story.
Maria and Michael had been laughing nonstop for the past hour. What they both realized was that, Max was a very complex person, more so than Liz had explained. Maria could tell he was caring, and loving not only towards his sister and best friend, but especially to Liz. He served her, he made sure she was comfortable, bringing her a pillow to rest her back against the dining room chair. She watched as he watched Liz, with open affection. He didn’t hide his feelings, not as well as he thought he did.
“…so then I jumped up to scare her, and she screamed and bolted up from the couch. Pouring the tub of popcorn and the glass of soda over Alex’s head,” Max tried to finish without laughing too hard. Just remembering what Alex looked like that night was unforgettable.
“He looked like a wet puppy! Then he had popcorn stuck to his head…it was…” Liz doubled over laughing finishing Max’s thoughts.
“All right, that’s enough Alex humor. Why don’t we tell them about the time Max and Liz were making out and he got gum stuck in her hair?” Alex offered up an embarrassing moment for Max and Liz, but little did he know he’d obviously had a little too much to drink.
“Omigod! Alex, that was you, you moron!” Max called him out and the entire table burst out laughing once again.
Liz watched, after wiping her tears of mirth from her eyes, her best friends, her family all at one table, and she realized how lucky she was. She turned to look at Max, who had entered into a sports conversation with Michael, and she smiled. She couldn’t have been happier that they got along so well, it was more than she could have hoped for.
****
Late that night, Max sat awake on the couch. He wanted to go to Liz, but thought better of it. He decided sleeping wasn’t an option. He rolled off the couch and dragged himself into the kitchen. He pulled out a bottle of water from the fridge.
“So daddy to be, what are you waiting for?”
Almost choking, he turned his head to see Maria enter the kitchen. He closed the door to the fridge, thereby rendering the room dark. What did she want to talk about? She made him nervous, as if she could read him and he didn’t like it. It unnerved him. He liked her, but that was a little odd. He’d never met anyone like her before.
Flicking on the light, she joined him across the room. She watched his movements closely. She unsettled him. Good, she thought, this would make it easier. She had just come from Liz’s room. They shared a long conversation about the happenings of this afternoon. Finally, she thought, Max was ready to be with her friend, but something was holding him back and she was ready to find out.
“You gonna answer my question?” she asked again softly.
He watched her push her long golden blonde hair away from her face, but then turned away.
“What are you talking about?”
“Come on, you’re a bright guy. I won’t pretend that I know what’s going on in your head, but you love her right?” she asked and he nodded.
“It’s too soon,” he provided candidly.
“Who says?” For that, he had no answer.
“I see the way you look at her. And I see the way she looks at you. I’m not trying to push, or to pry, but…”
“You’re going to anyway right?” he concluded with a small laugh.
“Hey, this is me, you get what you see. Now, tell me Max. Are you going to keep Liz from moving back to Germany?”
“What? No, I would never do that. That’s her home,” he offered sincerely.
“Good boy. She won’t choose it, you know?”
“Why do you say that?”
“You don’t know do you?” she asked somewhat confused. Was he really that far out of it that he didn’t realize that Liz would give it all up for him? She figured it wasn’t her place, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t help the poor man along, now did it?
“Know what?”
“Max, I can’t give you all the answers. But I have a feeling that deep down you already know, don’t you?” she narrowed her eyes at him and watched as realization dawned on him.
“Very good. Now, how about you answer my question?” Maria asked wiggling her eyebrows suggestively.
Max groaned internally. What was he waiting for? He loved Liz, he had already confessed it to her, and she to him. The only thing holding him back was him. Practically, tripping over the stool he stood abruptly, and smiled bashfully at Maria.
“Thanks.”
“Oh and Max?” Maria called out softly behind him.
“Yeah?” he turned slightly.
“Michael and I sleep like the dead,” she winked and watched as he nodded uncomfortably.
“Crazy kids.” She shook her head and patted herself on the back for a job well done. Mission accomplished, she thought. Michael should be proud, in fact, she thought standing, he should thank her…thoroughly…
****
“Baby, are you sleeping?” he whispered out as he entered her room. She lay in the bed, looking tiny and fragile and it made his blood boil. He had never ached for her as much as he did in that moment.
“Max…what are you doing here?” came her soft question. Her heart was racing and she couldn’t help the little flutter of glee that he had come to her tonight. She thought for sure she was going to have to drag him from the living room.
Max crossed the room and crawled into bed with her, lifting the covers and scooting in next to her. His hands ran over her warm body, noticing quickly that she was wearing nothing but a short T-shirt.
“I…” he could do this, he told himself. “I want to make love to you, Liz…tonight…forever,” he professed gently. She smiled and turned to face him, “I want that too, Max.”
He leaned in and kissed her, devouring her lips gently and increasing the pressure as he felt her body connect with his. She was trailing her hands up his shirt, successfully yanking it up over his head; she began to pepper his muscular chest with kisses.
“Liz…” he panted out.
“Yes?” she asked breathlessly, why had he stopped? He was halfway between pulling her shirt up over her head.
“The last time we did this, it was…I mean we made our baby, but it was…” he fought to find the right words.
“I know Max.” She kissed his lips once again but he continued on even as she successfully removed his shirt and reached to remove his pajama bottoms.
“It was just…I never want to be with you like that again, Liz.” He confessed gruffly at the feel of her small hands roaming over his body.
“What? You don’t want…” she paused in confusion.
“No…God no! I want you, Liz. But that was not our best and I hated that we took each other like that.”
“Me too, Max.”
Allowing her to straddle his naked hips with her equally naked ones, he reached up and pushed her hair away from her shoulders. He watched as her chest rose and fell harshly with each breath of air she pulled into her lungs.
“You okay?” he asked rubbing her arms gently.
“I’m perfect.”
“That you are,” he mumbled out as he dragged her down against him.
They’re lovemaking was sweet and tender, everything their last time wasn’t. As their bodies lay pressed against one another’s both sated, they made promises of forever and shared kisses that held behind them, a love that would last for all time.
****
It was the shrill of the telephone ringing that woke them from their slumber. Max turned over abruptly and wiped the sleep from his eyes. It was nearly four in the morning, who the hell could be calling, he thought.
Reaching over he picked up the receiver and answered.
“Nancy, what’s wrong?” he asked, and felt Liz stir against him. She had heard the uneasiness in his voice and sat up.
“Max, what is it?” she asked after he hung up the phone. Turning towards her, his eyes answered her question.
“She’s gone isn’t she?” came her question, with a mark of certainty in her voice.
He nodded. He wasn’t sure what he felt, and he was afraid to admit that the only thing he could actually feel was…relief.
“It’s okay, Max.” Liz reached out and caressed his cheek gently.
“Is it?” he asked so unsure. Was it wrong to feel relief that she was dead?
“It was time and there was nothing anyone could do, more than that though its okay to feel relieved. I know I do. I don’t want to sound mean or heartless, but the rest of her secrets died with her and in one way it's sad, and in other it’s a heavy weight that I feel has been lifted,” Liz tried to soothe his worries with her words. Deep down she was saddened, because despite everything Suzanne had done, no one deserved to die the way she did, suffering. Her mind wanted to be happy that she got what she deserved, but her heart wouldn’t let her be that cruel. It was still a life and it mattered to her.
“God, I love you more than you’ll ever know,” he whispered out pulling her in for a deep kiss. It felt wrong to be happy, but he was. Funny thing, it had nothing to do with Suzanne. He was happy because he was with the love of his life and they were starting their little family, and that was all he ever wanted.
“Its funny you know?” Liz said as they lay in each other’s arms a few minutes later.
“What is?”
“She tore everyone apart while she was healthy, but her illness brought everyone together. So maybe we do have something to thank her for.” Liz turned her face up to regard the man she would love for the rest of her life, and smiled.
It was in that moment she really believed with all her heart, that in her world there were happy endings after all.
A/N - And so here it is...the very last part. I hope you all enjoy it. Thank you for your feedback and kind words. Some of you may be wondering if I'm working on anything else, and to answer the question, I will say yes. As you know Let Love In, is currently in progress. I'm also working on a 10 part fic called Queen of Hollywood, a much longer fic renamed Fall Like Rain, and the final installment to the Confessions Series called, Sins of Twins, among other things I've been toying with (but I'll just keep that to myself and those who already know *lol*) However, I will not be focusing on those fics until I am done with Wings of an Angel.
Thank you,
Tanya
Epilogue
“Liz, you need to breathe,” came Alex’s request. He had no idea what he was doing, and he wished to hell that Max were there. Unfortunately, Max had business to attend to yesterday, and Liz had insisted that she wouldn’t be having the baby and told him he could go.
What an awful mistake that was. Granted he was still in the same state, but it was Jersey, and it could take, especially on a Friday evening, close to four hours to get home from where he was. The baby might be born by then, he groaned inwardly. This was going to be a disaster if Max missed his first child’s birth. He knew that his best friend would never forgive himself.
“I am breathing you moron,” she gritted out as another contraction took over. Where was Max, and why in the world had she decided it was okay for him to leave her so close to her due date?
A minute later the contraction passed and there came a knock on the door. Isabel peeked her head inside the room and offered a soft smile. She watched thoughtfully as Alex held his sisters hand and offered her a few ice chips. Her mind wandered in that moment to how wonderful he’d be during their first pregnancy, she couldn’t wait.
“Did you talk to Max?” Liz asked after turning her head to the side. Isabel could see the tiredness in the petite brunettes face, as well as the worry. No one had heard from Max since this morning, before Liz went into labor. And now that she was officially set to deliver the baby in a few short hours, Max was missing. Well, not missing, she correct, he just wasn’t answering his cell phone, which was not like him. Especially knowing that Liz could have the baby any day now, something was going on and Isabel just hoped that whatever it was, Max hightailed it back home soon.
“I’m sorry, Liz. He’s just not answering the phone, but you know he could have left it somewhere and doesn’t even know,” Isabel offered with a hopeful smile. It did nothing to help Liz though.
“He can’t miss it. I refuse to have this baby without him here!” she said in a frustrated gasp, as another contraction washed over her. They were getting closer, and she was getting worried, that despite the fact that she wouldn’t allow the doctors to deliver her baby without Max present, that she didn’t have much of a say in the matter at this stage.
******
He stood, feet planted firmly on the ground, fists tightened at his sides and his heart thrumming in his chest. He had no idea how long he had been standing there, in that same spot but it was about time he moved forward.
His eyes narrowed as he drew closer to the figure, taking in a deep breath he continued forward at a steady pace.
“What are you doing here?” came the voice, once Max approached, coming to stand face to face with the man that disowned him years ago.
What was he doing there, he wondered himself. What had he been thinking coming here, when he was with his family? Anger rose, like a rocket lifting into space, through his body. He had needed to do this one last thing; he had to let go of a dream that would never be. A dream, that his father, who once loved him, would love him again one day. And instead he resolved himself to embrace the face that, this man no longer cared to know he even existed. More than that though he needed to do this for himself. He didn’t want to live under a cloud of doubt; he couldn’t, not when his child was soon to be born into this world. Max didn’t want any emotions from the past to taint his relationship with his son, which is why he was now standing in the face of a man who at one point was the center of his universe.
What a long time ago that seemed, he thought with a bitter resentment. Resentment, that he promised himself in that instant, he would leave right in this very spot the moment he turned and walked away today.
“I wanted to tell you something. Something that’s taken me years to accept,” he began looking everywhere but at the man’s face. He saw his father’s wife and son sitting on a blanket right behind him. A tinge of resentment washed over him, only to be replaced with the gratification that he and Liz were finally happy and their son was going to be born into the most loving family either of them had ever known.
A smiled touched his face, now, as he continued. “I hated you for leaving mom, but even more so for walking away from me, like I didn’t mean anything to you. I don’t understand it and maybe at one point I wanted to know, but now, I just don’t care.” Max said, his shoulders squared and his eyes looking directly into the man’s eyes. He took great pleasure in seeing the man look taken aback by his words.
“Is that all?” came the man’s hard, unwavering voice.
“No, it’s not,” he continued smugly now. What had he been so afraid of? All this time wasted on this man. He had to remember to kiss Liz as soon as he saw her again, he would never doubt her again. He was stronger than this situation, and when it was over he could go home to be with Liz and ask her to be his forever.
“I know you chose to ignore me all these years for whatever reason you seemed fit to justify your means, but from this day on, to you, I am dead.” With that Max turned on his heels and walked away, with his head held high, the weight of the world lifted from his shoulders, and a smile brighter than the sun on his face.
******
Listening to the monitors beep was driving her completely insane. She wanted to cry in fear, not only was she in labor but Max was nowhere to be found. What if something happened to him? God, no, she couldn’t think that way. Instead she rested her hands on her tight, round protruding belly. It always seemed to calm her down, she wondered though, in that moment, what it would feel like once he wasn’t in there anymore. Over the past nine months, she had grown accustomed to feeling him moving around and growing, but that feeling will disappear once her son was born.
Her son. The notion was almost inconceivable, she was going to be a mother, and Max a father. Of course she had thought about it, but now it was more real than she could ever allow herself to think.
“Liz?” came Alex’s soft voice filtering through the room. She had almost forgot he was sitting in the corner of the room. She smiled, happy that she had him in her life.
“Yeah?”
“He’s going to make it,” Alex assured her with a smile. He excused himself and said he would return shortly.
Liz stared out her window and prayed that Alex was right. Max just had to make it.
******
Max had been on the road for a few minutes when he heard his phone beep. Damn, he forgot to take it out of his jacket in the backseat this morning. He pulled over to the shoulder and then reached back to retrieve his jacket. Pulling the phone out, he flipped it open and saw that he had forty-five missed calls.
His heart sunk in that moment and a ball of fear settled in his stomach. Quickly he saw that the last number called was Isabel’s cell phone, he pressed the button to return the call. After a few rings his sister answered.
“Thank God! Where the hell have you been?” came Isabel’s elated but worried voice.
“What’s wrong with Liz?” came his immediate question. There was no other reason for anyone to call his phone that many times.
“Max, she’s in labor and it’s been hours. I don’t know how much longer its going to be until she delivers,” she answering him as she motioned to everyone that she was stepping outside since cell phone use was not permitted in the hospital.
“What? Christ!” Max swore as he pulled out into the traffic, he was at least an hour and a half away.
“I’m sorry, damn it. I shouldn’t have listened to her,” he ground out angrily. He knew better and yet he allowed her sweet-talking and kisses talk him into it. Now he might miss the birth of his child. He let out another curse as he listened to Isabel explained what had transpired since this morning.
“I want to talk to her. What’s the number?”
“Max, I’ll just have her call you from her room. Give me a few minutes.” Max was more than a little reluctant to hang up the phone, but after another reassurance from his sister he did.
The next few minutes, until he heard Liz’s voice assuring him that she was not having the baby, felt like a lifetime.
The phone rang minute later, and he picked it up with an almost desperate voice, “Liz, I’m so sorry, baby.”
“Max, thank God. I thought something happened to you.” Liz smiled into the phone; she felt infinitely better when Isabel entered her room to tell her Max had called.
“I know. I’m sorry, I had to do something and I didn’t think. I should have. Are you okay? The baby?” he rushed out as he tried like hell to cover as much distance as he could before the rush hour traffic started. If he were lucky, which he hoped to hell he was, he would just miss it.
“The baby is good, your son wants out, Max and I’m trying really hard to relax. Alex has been so good, he’s been with me through the contractions.”
“How far apart are they?” he asked, fearing the answer.
“Max, let’s not talk about that okay?” she whispered out, allowing a single tear to slip from the corner of her eye.
Deciding it was better to appease her, he told her about his day. “Max, I’m so proud of you,” she smiled into the phone.
“Liz, if I hadn’t have gone to see him, I would be there already. I’ll never forgive myself, Liz.” He grated out frustratingly. Somehow his father was going to manage to ruin the experience, he just knew it.
“Max, listen to me. No matter what, we can’t control what happens, you know that,” she coaxed him gently.
“I know,” he started and then an emotion so consuming washed over him and he said, “I’ll be there, Liz. It might be by the skin of my teeth but I will be there.” His voice, set, determined and Liz knew he wouldn’t let her down.
“I love you, Max.”
“Liz, you have no idea how much I love you. And later, I’m going to prove it.” He smiled and then continued talking for the remainder of his ride. He soothed her through each contraction, and he even succeeded in making her laugh, when she started crying about being scared once again.
There was still some distance he had to cover in order to get there before the baby was born, and when she explained that the doctor needed to prepare her for delivery, his heart sunk but he still didn’t give up.
******
“Liz you are going to have to start pushing when the time comes, which won’t be much longer,” the doctor urged.
“God, can’t we just wait? Let me get relaxed,” she had tried for the past fifteen minute to stave off the doctor, but it was useless the baby was within sight. And in few minutes she would have to push, whether she liked it or not.
Suddenly, she began to cry uncontrollably. Alex hadn’t entered the room yet, but Isabel had been standing on the side of the room waiting for Alex to return. She couldn’t resist the urge to approach Liz. Over the past several months, they grew closer and Isabel was thankful for that, for Liz’s heart.
“Liz, you need to calm down. Max is going to be here, if he has to break every traffic law in the state of New Jersey, he’ll be here. But you need to relax, it’s not good for the baby or yourself.” Isabel sat beside Liz, holding her hand and stroking it gently.
“Thank you. You’re right.” Liz smiled despite her tears.
“You have a name right?” Isabel asked after a moment, and she noticed the doctor’s thankful gaze.
“Yes, we were toying around with so many. It’s hard to decide what to call your child; they will be stuck with that name for the rest of their lives. I thought Max told you?” Liz asked after a moment.
“No, he said that you guys were keeping it a secret.”
“Yeah, but I think it would be okay to tell you,” Liz smiled as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
Isabel was surprised but grateful; she smiled and leaned in closer to hear Liz’s whispered words.
“Alexander Keith Evans.”
Isabel leaned back and stared at Liz with a smile of happiness. It would be the greatest gift to Alex to have his nephew named after him. She couldn’t think of a more deserving man, other than her brother.
“Now, remember keep it a secret and act really surprised,” Liz offered with a slight grimace.
“Are you okay?” Isabel asked worriedly.
“Ms. Evans, I’m afraid I am going to have to ask you to leave, unless you will be assisting Ms. Parker with the delivery,” the doctor said and then threw out a few instructions to the nurses standing in the room.
“I think, I can take it from here.”
“Max!” Liz half cried half yelled. He made it, her body relaxed and her eyes closed in gratitude. Her prayer was answered.
“Hey there little brother. It’s about time.” Isabel stood, hugged her brother and explained that they would all be waiting anxiously for the baby to arrive.
“Mr. Evans, so good to have you here. I thought I was going to have to go to extreme measures.” The doctor looked thankful, he knew damn well Liz would have fought to wait all the way through the delivery.
Max smiled and leaned over to kiss Liz on the lips. “I made it,” he said a little breathlessly. He had made it to the hospital, but then he had to run from one end to the other, because three ambulances blocked one of the other entrances and they wouldn’t let him through.
“I’m happy,” she said as another contraction hit her, harder than she had yet to feel. Max gripped her hand and told her he would be right back. He needed to change, so he followed a nurse out and was back in just a few short minutes.
As soon as he stepped back into the room, he froze, there she was the love of his life and she was about to deliver their child. Their first child, he reminded himself with a smile. He crossed the room quickly and settled down next to her, taking her tiny hand in his.
“Max, I’m so tired already. How the hell am I supposed to push after all this?” she asked wearily.
“I have faith in you,” he said, leaning over and kissing the top of her head. Liz smiled gratefully at him.
The doctor instructed her that in just a few minutes he would need her to push, but she was somewhat distracted when Max stood and reached out his hand to her, holding a small black velvet box.
“Max?” she whispered out hoarsely.
“I wanted to wait, and I know we don’t have a lot of time. I figured this was the most unconventional way to do this. Then again, what about our relationship has been conventional?” He chuckled nervously. “I just can’t wait, Liz. I love you more than I ever thought possible. You made me want more, love more and believe more, than I ever believed I could. You had faith in me, you believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. And you loved me, despite all my flaws. I promise you, if you say yes, I will not only love you and our baby for the rest of our lives, I will make you the happiest woman in the world,” he choked out the last part. And in the background heard the doctor tell her to push.
Knowing he’d run out of time, he leaned over, locking his eyes with hers and asked the question he’d longed to ask for a lifetime, even if he hadn’t known it. “Marry me, baby. Marry me and have my baby.”
“Yes, I’ll marry you.” Liz replied right before she began pushing. She was stunned, overwhelmed and happy all at once. Max slipped on the ring to her hand, and then took it within his and coaxed her soothingly, aiding her the only way he could with the delivery.
He watched as she brought their child into the world, and thought how lucky he was to have the life he had. Maybe years ago, he would have wished for things to be different, but in the moment the word ‘yes’ slipped from her sweet lips at the precise moment she began to deliver their son, he knew he wouldn’t have changed his life for anything in the world.
Liz watched him closely, as he held their son cradled protectively against his bear chest. Alexander was days old and was greeted with the warmest welcome any child could receive. Michael and Maria had even made the trip down, not that they would have missed it for the world, and would be staying in town for two additional weeks before flying back home.
Her parents had been at the hospital from the first moment, but Liz didn’t want to see them. It still hurt, and although it had been a few months since Suzanne’s passing, the pain of the betrayal had not subsided. With time she knew it would, but for now, she would allow them to see their grandchild, for his benefit, not for theirs. She refused to rob her child from his family. And she had decided that when she got married, she would hold her child as she walked down the aisle. She didn’t want, nor desire her father to walk her, to her, he hadn’t earned it. In the years to come, she was sure that she would forgive, but never forget.
Her brother had been elated to hear that his first nephew was named after him. In fact, he had shed a few tears over the moment. Not that there was a dry eye in the waiting room at the news that the baby had been delivered safely, and that Liz was doing exceptionally. In addition to the fact, Max had also announced that he and Liz were getting married.
Liz smiled in remembrance of the proposal. It would go down in history, without a doubt. A tale to tell all their children, and God willing grandchildren.
She knew there was still so much left to decide, but all in good time, she thought as her eyes grew heavy. Besides, it wasn’t that important to know all the answers anymore, this time around she would just take it one happy day at a time.
Max stood holding his son his arms, and he could only use one word to describe how he felt, happy. It was a simple word, but with so many implications. The moment he saw his son, he was in love. Then he held him and thought, he would love, live and breathe for him.
Liz was amazing and in his eyes she grew even more from that day forward. When he looked back on the experience, he would with a sense of awe. She was nothing short of amazing, and she would be his wife in just as little a six months. He couldn’t wait, but she insisted that they do it the right way.
Max never thought after his shamble of a marriage to Suzanne, and her untimely death that anything would be normal again. Granted, it still wasn’t, but what was so great about normal? He was completely and deliriously happy with his life, as unconventional as it might be. In fact, he would fathom this was as close to having a perfect life as anyone could have.
Looking down into his son’s precious face as he yawned and formed an ‘O’ with his tiny little mouth, Max leaned over and kissed his cheek softly. Taking a step back he turned and sat in the rocking chair Liz had placed in the corner of the room. He peered over at Liz’s sleeping form and smiled, and then turned to look down at his son and began retelling the story of the day he met his mother.
Later, he would thank God for that one day many years ago, when a young girl with the dreams of falling and being in love, wished for more.
