Look at Me (Liz POV, implied M/L, Youth) 1/1 Complete 5/10

Post by Imagineatness »

Title: Look at Me
Author: Imagineatness
Rating: Youth
Category: M/L
Disclaimer: I don't own much, characters included. Don't sue.
Summary: This is the shooting, through the eyes of Liz Parker. But she's looking back and thinking in future tense.
Author's Note: I wrote this as a pastiche of Carlos Fuentes's second person/future tense style. It's short and sweet. Take a look.

You will learn a secret

It will be an ordinary day. You will be working. The day will not be special. You will take orders, be cheery, and smile at the customers. You will not pay attention to the two men at the other side of the room, but at the young boy sitting only three meters from you. You will look at him when a noise will be heard. You will freeze and a bullet will find itself lodged near your lung.

You will fall, slowly, and not feel a thing. You will hit the ground without a sound. You will find yourself thinking, not about your life, but what your life could have been. Fantasies of a husband and children will float around your subconscious as you close your eyes. Fantasies of college will drift away.

You have to look at me...

You will resist at first. The warmth of death will blanket its way around you, but then you will recognize that voice and try to open your eyes. When you do, a pair of hazel ones clouded with fear and determination will greet you. A masculine but clammy hand will touch your stomach where the bullet hit and a tingling warmth will be spread over your body and soul from that spot. Look at me...

You're all right now.

You will be saved.

Please don't say anything.

On legs of jelly, you will stand, expression of awe on your face and stare at his retreating figure.

You will not be scared. You will feel confused, conflicted, but thankful. Life will never be the same after this moment.

Your father will hover over you the rest of the day. Your best friend will ask you questions. Your mother will not be able to look at you. You will not notice, but wonder at what happened earlier in the day.

Night will come and your head will be full of questions. Sleep will evade you that night. You will float between awake and your subconscious. Scenarios will play out of your healer. "I'm special," he says. "Up north," he says. You will not know what to expect when you see him the next day. You will worry about what to say and do.

You will know you almost died. You felt a blanket of death surround you, but you will lie in bed thinking about having died. Up north.

North.

You will slip from your bed and climb through your window. Your eyes will look upward and you will understand. Your arms will wrap themselves around you. You will feel wonder. You will wonder.

You will learn a secret.

Look at me...

The truth is an incredibly subjective experience. It's all about perception. You paint the picture just how you want it to look and nobody really has the qualifications to question it.
