Hi guys! I'm so sorry I missed a week of this! I'm seriously bummed that my muse just doens't want to cooperate with me on this story any more. But I finally won out and managed to get this part done. Thankfully, it's pretty much how I wanted it to turn out. Except the way they managed to get her parents to allow her to go to the prom....sort of.....apologies if it sounds lame to you... :( I seriously want to kick my muse's derriere now.

Erina- Yes, I wanted M/L's Spring Break to be a virtually worry free, fun time. The prom was actually one of the things I'd planned on doing from the beginning of this story and thankfully my muse is still in agreeement.
Emz- I know, we'll find out soon.
roswell- You think?
Vero- hee hee. You'll see.
BehrOb- So true! You know it!
Eve- I'm glad. I wanted Liz to be a strong character in this story, so I'm glad she does that, although, she does disappoint me sometimes. We'll see.
Omega- Hmmm... We'll see.

Part 21
"Maria, I just don't think they are gonna go for this."
"Of course they are. Come on Liz, why would they not go for it? You've been really good lately."
I rolled my eyes, "Maybe, but my parents know it's prom night. They know! I mean I did say I wasn't going with Kyle after all, so I really think they expect me to stay home like the good little girl I have been lately."
"Well, they'll just understand that it'll be you and I staying home together. Only it'll be at my place."
I sighed hoping that once more, my parents would believe the newest plan Maria and her 'bestest' girlfriend, Max had come up with. Since I told my parents that I didn't want to go to the prom because I wasn't interested in it, they had finally let it slide. Mostly because I made it sound like I was more interested in making good grades than going out and partying with the crowd. While my father was still pushing me to marry Kyle, he couldn't fault me for wanting to keep my grades up. It obviously wasn't just social status that my father cared about. He made sure nothing could smear the family name, so if his kids came home with bad grades, we would get it.
So, for the last month I had been the good girl my father wanted me to be. I was also hoping that if I didn't mention Kyle or the wedding in any way that my parents would drop the matter. No such luck, I still caught my mother having phone conversations with Ms. Valenti every now and then.
I knew Max was getting more worried. He was trying not to let me know just how worried he was becoming as the school year drew to a close, but I knew he was. I was also certain that a lot of that also had to do with the fact that we rarely got to see each other during all that time.
Max made it a point to spend every break I had at work together. Most of those times were spent in the back room, but there were a few times we ventured out into the mall too. Since I was being the good girl, I couldn't hang out with my 'older' friends like Max and Michael, which seriously limited my going out. If I did go somewhere, it was usually to Maria's house or she came over to my house.
It would have been an incredibly long month for me had it not been for the fact that I was truly studying hard and doing what I had to do to prepare for going to college. I had already applied to several colleges in and around the state and was now eagerly awaiting for any news.
It was a long month for Max. The one time I actually got to spend a long time with him was when Isabel and Alex invited Maria, Serena, and I to take a day trip to a nearby lake. The reason that had happened was once again courtesy of Maria and Max's minds. Of course, Isabel had been let in on the mission. See, my father adored his oldest son for obvious reasons, so when Alex asked to spend the day with his sisters, my father readily agreed. No one mentioned that Max and Maria made the plan, told it to Isabel, who then implanted the seeds in Alex's mind so that it ended up sounding like it had been Alex's idea all along.
Once we got to the lake, Isabel and Alex got settled in at a picnic area and allowed the three of us to go do what we wanted. Isabel made certain her husband was too occupied with her to want his sisters interrupting them any time soon. So, the three of us walked along the lake until we were out of sight of them, then we followed a hiking trail that led to several secluded cabins. Max had rented one of them for the day and Maria knew which one to take us to.
The moment he'd opened the door, he'd pulled me into his arms and kissed me like a starving man, completely ignoring the fact that Maria and Serena were standing there trying not to giggle. When we came up for air, he invited us in and the four of us enjoyed a game of scrabble. Maria and Serena then left to go explore the lake side so that Max and I could have some time alone. Needless to say, Max couldn't wait until they were halfway down the trail before he pounced. Not that I was complaining. Why would I when I had one of the hottest boyfriends around. But all too soon, I had to make my way down to the lake side to join Maria and Serena as we made our way back to Alex and Isabel.
While I had loved being able to spend that time with Max, I still felt guilty that all of us were in on the plan except for my older brother. Alex was a sharp, take charge kind of guy when he was in court, but when he wasn't working, he was the most laid back, easy going guy I knew. That was why I knew he wouldn't be worrying about me constantly while we were supposedly walking around the lake. He was perfectly content to spend that time with Isabel since it was rare for him to just relax with her.

The Saturday night of the prom arrived and to my amazement, my parents had allowed me to spend all day Saturday and Sunday with Maria. I was still stunned that my father even consented because I had believed Maria was one of his least favorite people. Still, I was shocked when he'd answered, "Sure, why not. You've been studying really hard lately and haven't had any time to just relax with friends, so I don't see the harm in staying with Maria for the weekend."
So I had packed my bag and gone over to her house early Saturday afternoon so that we could relax a bit before we got ready for the prom. I had purchased a dress earlier that week.
Actually, Max had been the one to get the dress since he'd dragged me to several stores in the mall to look for one during my breaks. Luckily there had still been a good selection to choose from that late in game. Still, it had taken Max and I almost all week to finally find a dress to both of our liking.
Maria had actually accompanied us on two occasions and had teased us both after she'd gotten an earful of listening to Max and I argue over dress colors and styles. When she'd gotten our attention with her laughter, she'd commented, "Geez, you two argue like two of the harshest fashion critics ever! Max, are you certain you’re not a woman in disguise? Cause I swear, your fashion sense is so savvy it’s almost scary, girlfriend!”
Max frowned at Maria’s comment and responded in a sarcastic tone, “Girlfriend, if I was a woman, do you think I’d be keeping your best friend so satisfied that she’s willing to dump her fiancé for me? I don’t think so!” He punctuated the last sentence with a snap of his fingers.
As Maria pretended to gasp in mortification, I couldn’t help but laugh at Max’s dead on imitation of a drag queen diva.
Maria and I spent early Saturday afternoon doing our nails while watching DVDs and giggling about what we wanted to happen that night at the prom. She was going with Michael who had asked her the moment he’d found out from Max that her prom was coming up.
In true Evans fashion, Michael hadn’t hesitated one bit to ask his girlfriend if she would go to the prom with him. Maria had actually been shocked that Michael had even asked her, thinking he wouldn’t want to go to something so childish as a high school prom. But Michael felt the same way Max did and had even said the same thing as his brother, senior prom only came along once in a lifetime.
Since the guys were picking us up at seven, Maria and I started getting ready about five. I started on her hair while she did her makeup, then we switched places. After that, we began our own rituals of making ourselves look good for the night ahead.
I was wearing an off the shoulder black satin gown. It zipped up at the back and was floor length. I wore black satin heels to match and had my hair pinned up in soft curls on top of my head. Several wisps were left to dangle down the back of my neck. Max had gotten me a simple silver beaded necklace with matching earrings and a bracelet to go with it.
Maria wore a strapless jade satin gown with hints of gold glittering throughout it. It had a slit up the left side and was also floor length. The dress really went well with her skin tone and brought out her eyes, making them more radiant. Her hair was softly crimped and fell loosely around her shoulders and down her back. She wore matching satin pumps and a gold necklace. In her ears were gold hoops.
Even though we would be taking separate cars, Max and Michael arrived at the same time. Maria and I were still upstairs putting on the finishing touches when they arrived. The maid answered the door, since Maria’s parents were out of town as usual.
Once we were ready, we walked down the stairs together. The guys were waiting in the living room for us and both of them stood up when we entered. My eyes immediately drank their fill of my gorgeous boyfriend.
Max was wearing a suit by Armani and his long hair had been brushed back to frame his face in soft waves. Tailor made black pants, white silk shirt, and a suit jacket combined to make him look stunning. His eyes glowed as he watched me walk towards him. He smiled and leaned in to give me a kiss on my cheek before whispering in my ear, “You look gorgeous, beautiful.”
I blushed, “You look gorgeous too, handsome.”
He gave me his smirk and held up the box with my corsage in it, “For you. Although I think it will never do you justice.”
I giggled, “It’s lovely, Max.”
He took out the corsage and slipped it on my wrist. The maid handed Maria and I the flowers to pin on the guys lapels. Max got a white rose to match the black and white theme Max and I had going, while Michael got a yellow rose to match the gold and green of Maria’s dress.
Once I had fastened the rose to Max’s jacket, he held his arm out to me, “Shall we go, my lady?”
I beamed, “Of course, my lord.”

I sat next to Max in the back of the stretch limo leaning back and staring up at the starry sky in perfect contentment. Max sat next to me holding my hand in his as he joined me in just sitting quietly stargazing.
Once we’d left the house, Max had taken me to the hotel where the prom was being held so that we could take our pictures before I messed up any of my hard work. After that, we’d gotten back into the limo to go have dinner.
Max had pulled out all of the stops to make this a night I’d never forget. He had managed to get a reservation at one of the most exclusive high rise restaurants in the city. Of course, it did help that his father was Phillip Evans, the man who was responsible for building the high rise and he was also Michael’s brother, who tended to stop in often to practice being a chef. It had been a piece of cake for Max.
At the restaurant, we were given a secluded table on the terrace, overlooking the entire city. Thankfully the breeze was light enough not to bother us, but strong enough to keep us from sweating. It ended up being one of the most romantic dinners I’d ever had with Max to date.
Surrounded by sweet smelling flowering bushes and the city lights twinkling up at us, Max and I had enjoyed a wonderful five course meal with wine to compliment it. Our conversation was light as we enjoyed the atmosphere, enhanced by the soft classical music pumped out by a hidden sound system.
Once we were finally done, we left the restaurant and took a drive to the city’s biggest and most well cared for park. Max and I walked around for a while, letting our food digest and had finally stopped at one of the huge fountains. He brought us a cup of chocolate ice cream to share and we sat down on a bench together to enjoy it. I think Max enjoyed it the most because he got to feed it to me, then kissed me to get the flavor of me and chocolate combined.
After our ice cream was finished, we walked back to the limo and drove out of the city limits to a reservoir where we parked and just sat in the back to stargaze. We’d been sitting there for quite a while just enjoying the time we had to be alone together.
I sighed and leaned into Max’s side, prompting him to wrap his arm around my shoulders. Closing my eyes, I inhaled his scent mixed with the spicy cologne he was wearing. He smelled good and he felt so warm that I couldn’t help but turn my head up to nuzzle his neck.
He chuckled.
I smiled against his neck, “You smell really good.” I nipped at his skin, “Mm, you taste good too.”
I felt his laughter rumble in his chest beneath my hand, “Didn’t you just have a full meal and dessert?”
“Yes,” I breathed, “but you are a whole other nourishment for me.”
Max groaned at my answer and tipped my chin with his hand before he bent down to take my lips in his. I sighed and leaned my weight into him as our kiss deepened. When his tongue swept against mine, I let out a soft moan and tried unsuccessfully to climb into his lap.
Max pulled away and took my hands in his. “Come on, it’s getting late, we should head back and go to the prom. Maria and Michael are probably already there wondering what’s taking us so long.”
I pouted, “Can’t we just skip that and keep enjoying this night alone?”
“We can do that later. Right now, you should have a chance to experience the dance.”
“Max, I’d rather just spend some time with you.”
“I know, but this is your prom.” He chuckled as I pouted once more. Caressing my cheek with his thumb, he whispered, “I promise, we’ll have time to spend together later.”
I sighed and sat back in the seat as Max gave the instructions to the driver to take us back to the hotel for the prom.

It was a little past ten when we finally made it to the prom. Maria and Michael both tried to act like they’d been waiting hours for us, but Michael had ruined it first by laughing and finally admitting that they’d only been there for about twenty minutes or so before we’d arrived.
The four of us found a table to sit at and while the guys went to get us some punch, Maria and I traded stories of our night so far.
Michael had taken Maria to another of the city’s exclusive restaurants where he’d reserved a party room for the two of them. The room had an entire glass wall that gave them a view of the city and they’d enjoyed a five course meal too. After that, Michael had taken her to the reservoir and they’d enjoyed a picnic in the limo with the pie Michael had made for them to enjoy. From there, they had gone to an observatory and stargazed before riding around the city and acting like rock stars, hanging out of the sun roof and drinking champagne.
When Max and Michael returned with the punch, we sat at the table for a while laughing and enjoying each others company until one of Maria’s favorite pop songs came on.
“Ooooh!” Maria squealed as she grabbed Michael’s hand, “We have to dance to this! Come on Michael.”
Michael chuckled, allowing Maria to drag him to the dance floor.
Max stood up and held his hand out to me, “Care to dance, beautiful?”
I smiled up at him, “ Love to, handsome.”
We joined Michael and Maria out on the dance floor for a few songs. Eventually, we began cutting up and making each other laugh with the funny dances we came up with. Michael had us all laughing so hard we were crying and holding our stomachs when he did his imitation of Michael Jackson doing ‘Beat It’.
We took a break to cool down a bit before Max and I went back out to dance to a slow number. We smiled at Michael and Maria when they came out for the next slow song as we continued to dance.
I wrapped my arms around Max’s shoulders and leaned my head against his chest. He wrapped his arms around my waist and laid his cheek against my head. We just enjoyed the way it felt to hold each other like that while we slowly swayed to the song. I sighed as I thought to myself that I was glad I had allowed Max to take me to my senior prom after all. He had managed to make it into a wonderful experience for me and I was extremely grateful to him for doing that.
I hugged him closer and lifted my head to gaze into his eyes. “I love you.”
He smiled, “I love you too, beautiful.”
“I want to tell you now, that I enjoyed tonight. Just in case I forget to later.”
He chuckled.
“Thank you, Max. For a prom I’ll never forget.”
He leaned in and placed a kiss on my nose, “Welcome, Liz.”
“Well, well. Look what crawled in from the sewers! Gee, Liz, didn’t think this hotel allowed bums inside.”
As Max stiffened in my arms, I turned my head to see Kyle standing there with a look of disgust on his face. Hanging off his arm was Victoria, the girl who currently held my happily relented title of the most popular girl in the senior class.
I arched an eyebrow at her, “Hi Victoria, where’s Peter?”
As Kyle narrowed his eyes at me, she answered, “Oh, his parents moved, so he got transferred over to Lowell High.”
I rolled my eyes. Lowell High School was the complete opposite of our high school, which meant that Peter’s parents must have lost their money since they moved to that neighborhood. Still, that shouldn’t be a reason why Victoria was no longer seeing him. “So, since you weren’t guaranteed to be pampered for the rest of your life, you thought to move on to someone who was more stable?”
Victoria shrugged, “Peter couldn’t afford to take me to the prom, and Kyle asked so why should I say no?”
I turned to look at Max who stood there exchanging glares with Kyle. Sighing, I said, “Well, you are more than welcome to him.”
She frowned, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
As Kyle motioned to me to be silent, I widened my eyes in mock innocence, “Oh, I’m sorry, he didn’t tell you? Well, I think you should know that Kyle and I are engaged to be married. Our wedding is in June, as soon as we graduate.”
Victoria gasped, “That’s not true!”
I arched an eyebrow, “Really?” I turned to Kyle and asked, “Is it a lie Kyle? Have you, your family, and my parents called off the wedding finally? Am I allowed to finally have my freedom from you?”
Kyle growled, “You know the answer to that!”
Victoria pulled away from him, “Oh my God! Are you telling me that you’re engaged to her, yet you asked me to the prom!” A look of horror passed over her face, “Oh God! And I did that with you in the back of the limo!”
I grinned as she suddenly slapped him, “You bastard! How could you!”
“Victoria, wait!” Kyle called out as she stormed off in disgust. He whirled around to face me. Growling, he said, “That does it! You are coming with me right now!”
He reached out to grab my arm, but Max intercepted. Glaring at Kyle, he hissed, “Don’t you dare lay a hand on her!”
“Back off, scum! She’s my fiancé, so that means I can tell her what to do!”
Max stepped towards Kyle, his hands curling into fists. Max was a full head taller than Kyle, and that plus his broad shoulders and lean physique made him tower over Kyle. “She’s not an object you can possess, Valenti! She’s a human being. And I know for a fact that she doesn’t want you anywhere near her!”
Kyle growled, “She will want me once you go crawling back to whatever sewer you crawled out of in the first place. So, when are you going to be done with her?”
Without any warning, Max took a quick step back and swung hard, his fist instantly connecting with Kyle’s jaw and sending him sprawling back into the crowd.
I grabbed Max’s arm, pleading, “Max! Don’t!”
Kyle sat up, holding his sore jaw and glared at Max, “You’ll pay for that scum!”
Max took a step towards him, but I held on to his arm and pleaded once more, “Max! Please! He’s not worth this!”
Frantically I looked around for Maria and Michael, wondering why they weren’t here helping me to control either one of them. They were no where in sight.
Max had stepped back again at my words, but Kyle once again opened his mouth. “That’s right, dimwit, listen to the girl. After all, your kind always lets the sluts lead them around by their dicks!”
I gasped as Max jerked loose from my hold and launched himself at Kyle. I cried out his name and pleaded with him to stop, but it was too late.
Despite the fact that Kyle knew Max would attack, he still couldn’t block the first punch that Max landed against his side. I rushed to Max’s side and called out for him to stop once more, but by this time, Max had Kyle on the floor and was leaning over him.
Kyle was desperately using his arms to block the blows Max was raining onto his body. I grimaced as the sound of solid punches echoed around us. Max was relentless, never giving Kyle the chance to do anything other than take a defensive position.
As I tugged at Max’s arms and shoulders, trying to get him to stop beating up Kyle, Michael came in and shoved me to the side before wrapping his arms around Max’s middle and yanking him off of Kyle. Despite the fact that Michael was a couple of inches shorter than Max and didn’t have the same muscular build, he was still able to drag Max off.
I quickly moved to stand in front of Max, blocking him from Kyle, who was still lying on the floor, unable to do anything but groan in pain.
Michael spoke hastily, “Are you out of your mind bro? Trying to beat him to a pulp! This is a high school prom!”
Max growled and continued to glower at Kyle. I reached up to place my hands on either side of his face, making him look at me, “Max! Look at me! You’ve got to get a hold of yourself! Michael’s right. This isn’t the place.”
Max blinked and the anger began to fade from his body, “What was I supposed to do, stand here and let him talk about you like that?” he hissed.
I gave him a grateful smile, “Thank you, for defending my honor, Max. But fighting with him won’t solve anything.” I caressed his cheek, “Please, let it go.”
He stared into my eyes for a moment before he nodded. As Michael let him go, he wrapped his arm around my shoulders, “Come on, beautiful, what do you say we ditch this place?”
I smiled, “That’s a great idea.”
Max turned to Michael and clapped him on the shoulder, “Thanks bro. You and Maria have a good time okay?”
Michael nodded, “Yeah, you too Max. And please stay out of trouble!”
Max grinned in response, just as Kyle began to get up from the floor.
With a groan and holding his side, he glared up at us, “What? So now you get your reward for beating me up, huh? Hope she’s worth it.”
As Max stiffened, I placed a hand against his chest, “No, baby. Please, let’s just go.”
As the music faded away, we all heard the sound of chaperones asking what the commotion was. I tugged on Max’s arm, “Let’s go, before they get here.”
Nodding, Max leaned over Kyle and growled, “You ever come near my girl or talk about her like that again, I promise you I’ll make sure you live to regret it.”
With those last words, Max wrapped his arm around my waist and escorted me out of the hotel.

Hi all, once again RL intruded and every time I sat down to write this, something else would come up. If you are reading my other stories, then you know it started with letting my brother borrow my laptop for nine days. After that, I was just trying to get back into the swing of things and catching up on every thing I missed over those nine days. As you may know, I have two other stories besides this one that I am writing and posting on this site. I try to be fair and write a part for each one every week, but sometimes one or the other calls to me to write more than one part. So, I'm at the mercy of my muse really. She decides which one gets attention on a daily basis  . I finally got this part done and am half way done with the next part, but I can't promise to get it to you before next sunday, so bear with me, okay. Until then, enjoy...

Erina-

Roslover- Thanks.

roswell-

Vero- Yes, Kyle is scum in this story...it breaks my heart :( . Hmmm...we'll see what Liz does soon.

BehrObsession- I'm sure it will be.

EVE-Nah, proms in the US are in April or May, it's just prom time in this story  .

Emz- Max is flattered  .

LJL- :D

La'Shon- These are the most uncomplicated Max and Michael characters I have written to date  . Yes, Kyle is a status junkie and so is Kevin, obviously not the good kind. Is there even a good kind? :? Well, Jeff is a lunkhead  . Wow! How'd you know I had a new part coming?

Here ya go...(italics is an interlude, not from Liz's point of view  )

Part 22
“Maaaaax, are we there yet?” I complained as I continued to let him lead me blindfolded into wherever it was that he was taking me.
“Almost there beautiful. Here, watch your step.” He instructed. I could feel him lift my hand slightly, allowing me to step over the bump in the floor. Once we were over the hump, he turned me around and slid his arm around my waist. “Hold on, beautiful.”
I giggled as I heard the ‘ding’ sound of an elevator and the sudden motion of moving upwards confirmed it. I turned my head to the side where I knew Max was standing, “Where are we?”
He chuckled, “I can’t tell you yet. We’re almost there.”
I pouted, then leaned in to nuzzle his neck, whispering, “Please?”
His arm tightened around my waist and I felt his breath against my lips, “Seducing me isn’t going to work, Liz.” He whispered back, just before his lips met mine.
I moaned at the taste of him as his tongue slid into my mouth, sliding against mine. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, clinging to him as my knees grew weak. I was vaguely aware of hearing the ding sound again and feeling the elevator come to a stop.
Max pulled away from me and announced, “We’re here. Let’s go beautiful.”
I growled in frustration as he led me out of the elevator onto carpeted flooring. Still he led me a ways and just when I was about to complain again, he stopped.
“Okay, here we go, just a few seconds now.”
I heard a door opening, then Max was leading me again. We only took a few steps before I heard a door closing, then Max was behind me, sliding his arms around my waist.
He leaned in to whisper into my ear, “You can look now, beautiful.”
I grinned and quickly pulled off the blindfold. As soon as I saw the room, I gasped in amazement. Max had taken me to an extravagant hotel suite.
It was very beautiful since none of the lights were turned on. The only illumination came from candles that were placed all around the rooms and from the lights coming from outside the opened balcony doors.
We were standing in a small hallway that led to a very large living area, complete with one of the most expensive entertainment systems I’d ever seen. There was a red leather sofa, two matching armchairs, and a glass coffee table. Behind the couch was a long, low buffet style table. The room was done in light reds and grays, giving it a comfortable, welcoming feel.
I took Max’s hand and began to walk towards the living room, stopping at the first door to my right to see inside. This was the kitchen area. It had state of the art appliances, an island in the center of the room, a small table for two near the back wall, and it was done in bright yellow and green colors, making it look very cheerful.
We continued walking into the living room and I looked into the other door that was on the right, directly opposite the living room couch. In there was the dining room. It had a glass rectangular table for six, a glass chandelier, and two buffet tables set at opposite ends of the room. This room was done in dark earth tones giving the room a comfortable, yet elegant appeal.
I turned to look at Max with a smile, “This is a very elegant place, Max.”
He grinned, tugging my hand, he led me towards the door on the far left of the living room, “Come on, you have to see the rest.”
I giggled as I let him lead me to the last door, which I already knew had to be the bedroom. Max opened the door and stepped aside to let me go in first. My giggles stopped and my eyes went wide at the scene before me. This was definitely a bedroom. The room was done in red black, and grey colors which were accented very well with the scented candles that were lit all around the room. The carpet was a plush dark grey and in the center of the left wall was the huge king sized bed. Huge thick mattresses sat atop a black iron frame and matching headboard. The sheets were a deep red silk, covered with a thick, black suede comforter, and huge satin pillows in red, black, and grey. Laying in the center of the bed was a single white rose.
Next to the bed was a grey nightstand that held an ice bucket of champagne and three huge bowls of strawberries, whipped cream, and chocolate. Against the far wall was a long, low dresser which held a vase of white roses. There was also a tall armoire opposite the foot of the bed, a double vanity table on the opposite wall of the dresser, and a door next to the dresser.
My eyes kept straying back to the roses and the items on the nightstand. Max came to stand next to me when my silence grew to long for him. He gave me a worried look. “Are you okay?” he asked.
I nodded, then turned to look at him with stars in my eyes, “It’s so beautiful, Max!”
He smiled as he reached up to caress my cheek, “Not as beautiful as you, love.”
I couldn’t help it, tears sprang to my eyes at the thought of Max going through all this trouble to make my prom night so special. I leaped at him, wrapping my arms around his shoulders, and hugging him tight. Giving him a kiss on his cheek, I whispered, “Thank you, Max. I’ll never forget tonight.”
He hugged me back and whispered his reply, “You’re welcome, baby.” Pulling away from me, he gave his smirk, “but the night isn’t over yet.”
With that, he led me through the door next to the dresser, which led to the bathroom. This room was done in various shades of blue and the flickering lights of the candles made it seem as if we were immersed in the sea, beneath the gentle waves.
Max led me to the sunken Jacuzzi tub near the far wall and started to run the water. He brushed his lips over mine, before rubbing my nose with his. “Take your clothes off, babe. I’m going to go get some drinks.”
I giggled as Max left the bathroom and turned to look around the room as I removed my clothes. Besides the tub, there was a shower stall to the right of it and it looked large enough to fit two very comfortably. Opposite the shower was the toilet, a small wall blocked it from view of the door. On the other side of the door was the mirror and double sink and next to that was the linen closet.
Max walked back in carrying the bucket of champagne and two glasses. He set them down on the ledge behind the tub before turning off the water. I stood there and watched as he pressed buttons to start the jets of the Jacuzzi and soon there was a nice foam in the tub. He turned to me with a grin as he got himself undressed, “Get in, beautiful, I’ll be right with you.”
I laughed at his remark and stepped into the tub. With a sigh, I sat down and let the hot water soothe me. Max opened the champagne and poured some into the glasses before handing me one of them. I took the glass and scooted up so that he could get in behind me.
As Max settled against the back of the tub, he slid an arm around my waist to help me lean back against his chest. Once we were both comfortable, he lifted his glass of champagne, “Here’s to a prom night you’ll never forget.”
I grinned, “A wonderful prom night, I’ll never forget.” We tapped our glasses together before taking sips from them.
Max and I enjoyed relaxing in the tub and sipping champagne for a while. We didn’t really talk much, which was fine by both of us. I knew he just wanted me to enjoy the rest of the night without any more unwanted interruptions.
I knew it was time to get out when Max set his champagne glass down and proceeded to kiss my shoulder. I tilted my head back, allowing him more access as his lips traveled up my neck to my ear. He nipped the lobe and said, “Let’s get you bathed, hm?”
He took the glass from me and set it next to his before picking up the sponge and soap. Once he had lathered the sponge up, he wrapped his arms around me and proceeded to bathe me. I closed my eyes in bliss as his hand and the sponge glided over my skin, making it slick and soft.
Max started with my fingers and worked his way up my arms and shoulders. Then he made his way down my chest, paying close attention to the undersides of my breasts and my nipples. Next were my ribs, stomach, hips, and abdomen. He bent me over to do my back before he moved to sit in front of me. Leaning me back against the tub, he went to work on my legs, starting at my feet and going up. By the time he had reached my thighs, I was literally purring in delight at the way he was making me feel.
A moan escaped my lips when he ran the sponge over the triangle of hair between my legs. It was quickly followed by a grunt of disappointment when I felt the sponge and his hand move away. I opened my eyes to look up at him.
Max sat there just looking at me, something dark and beautiful in his eyes. Slowly he smiled at the disappointment on my face, “I know, beautiful. I’ll give you what you want when we get into bed.” He leaned over to kiss my nose, “Promise.”
He held out the sponge and soap to me, his eyes asking if I wanted to return the favor. I gave him a huge grin as I took the items from him and proceeded to enjoy touching him everywhere.

A phone rang in an upstairs bedroom. The occupant shifted in bed, slowly coming out of sleep. As the phone continued to ring, a hand reached out from under the covers and grabbed the receiver, pulling it under the covers where the sound of a muffled, disgruntled voice said, “Do you know what time it is?”
There was a pause, and then, “When?”
Another pause, then a sigh, “Okay, I’ll get dressed and meet you there in fifteen.”
Pause. “Right. See you in a bit.”
The hand came out of the covers to replace the receiver on the cradle before disappearing again.
With another sigh, the teenager slid out of his warm bed and began to get dressed even though it was nearly one in the morning.

“Mmmm. That feels so good Max.”
He grinned, looking up at me as he continued to run the rose over my skin. We had gotten out of the tub and dried off before going to bed. Where Max was currently driving me wild with the white rose.
I lay on my back, spread out over the sheets as Max sat next to me, propped up on one elbow. He had been using that rose to tease all of my sensitive spots and now, it was caressing my stomach.
I sighed and closed my eyes as the rose made its way over my hips and down my thighs. Without warning, the rose was suddenly pressed against my folds and I gasped as my hips bucked up from the bed. “Oh, Max!”
He leaned down to press a kiss against my lips, “Patience, beautiful.”
I growled, “I’ve been patient all night! I want my dessert and I want it now!” He laughed as I sat up and flipped him onto his back, before straddling his hips.
I grinned in satisfaction, “It’s your turn to squirm, gorgeous.”
Leaning over him, I reached for a strawberry and dipped it into the chocolate. Then I sat up and looked down at him as I proceeded to lick the chocolate from the strawberry.
Max’s eyes widened as he stared at the way my tongue moved over the strawberry, taking the chocolate and sliding it into my mouth. Once the chocolate was gone, I swirled my tongue around the tip of the strawberry and smiled to myself when I saw the way Max’s eyes darkened and went to half mast.
He moaned the moment I bit into the strawberry, swallowed, then licked my lips. I arched an eyebrow at his whimper, “What’s wrong?” I gave him an innocent look as I held out the bitten strawberry to him, “Want some?”
He nodded, “Yes, please.”
I chuckled at his words, before leaning over and dipping the strawberry into the chocolate again. Then I moved it to his mouth. He opened it and lifted his head to bite into it, but I pulled it back, “Uh, uh. Not yet. Close your mouth, Max.”
He did as I asked and I ran the fruit over his lips, coating them in chocolate. Then I leaned over and licked his lips, cleaning it off. Once I was done, I quickly slid the strawberry into my mouth and kissed Max, sharing the fruit with him as my tongue slid into his mouth.
His arms slid around my waist and pulled me closer as I ravished his mouth some more. Soon, I pulled away again much to the disappointment of my boyfriend.
I chuckled at his groan, “That’s what you get, you tease!”
I slid off of him and picked up the bowl of whipped cream and another strawberry. Sitting next to him, I scooped up some cream with the fruit and began to spread it over his body, starting with his collarbone. Next I coated his nipples, his navel, his hipbones, and followed the trail of hair from his navel to his groin.
The entire time I teased him with the sliding of the fruit and cream against his skin, Max moaned in pleasure and frustration. I knew he wanted me to hurry and lick it off, but I was more interested in finishing my art first.
I dipped the strawberry into the cream again and slid it over his cock, which was already thick and hard. He growled as the cool cream came into contact with his heated skin and his hips bucked up trying to get more friction.
I continued to drive him crazy, coating all of his cock with the cream before I stopped and set the bowl down. Then I picked up the bowl of chocolate and dipped the strawberry into it.
Max closed his eyes with a hiss as I let the chocolate drip onto his chest. I set the bowl back down and sat back to survey my work. I grinned at the sight of Max coated in chocolate and whipped cream and licked my lips in anticipation of feasting on my masterpiece.
I dipped the strawberry into the chocolate, then the whipped cream before I leaned over Max saying, “Open wide, baby.”
Max opened his eyes and saw me holding the fruit over his mouth for him to eat. He did as I asked and opened his mouth. I fed him the strawberry until he had eaten every bite of it before I kissed him once more.
Then, I left his lips and proceeded to lick the cream from his collarbone. Max closed his eyes once more as my tongue swirled over his skin, taking the cream into my mouth. From there, I moved down to his chest and lapped at the dots of chocolate I had put there. I could feel Max shudder at the feel of my tongue on his chest and when I swirled my tongue over a cream covered nipple, he gave a serrated moan.
I continued to lick his chest clean before I moved to his navel and dipped my tongue into it. Max shuddered once more and his fingers buried themselves into my hair.
I moved my mouth to his hip and licked and nuzzled my way down one before moving to do the other hip. Then I returned to his navel, swirling my tongue around it once before dipping my tongue deep inside of it, making Max gasp and tighten his hold in my hair.
Smiling, I let my tongue lick its way down the trail of cream leading to his groin. I placed a wet kiss against the patch of hair that began his groin area before looking up at him. He had been watching me the whole time I’d feasted on him.
With a twinkle in my eyes, I leaned down and took a long lick from the base all the way to the tip, ending with a flick of my tongue to the head. He threw his head back at that and hissed, “God, Liz!”
At that point, I wasn’t interested in torturing him any more than he was willing to be tortured. So, I took his entire length into my mouth and began greedily sucking on him. Immediately his hands gripped my head and his hips began thrusting upwards. I licked and sucked until all of the cream was gone and still I feasted on his flesh. Curling my hand around the base, I began pumping him as my mouth continued to suck hard.
I was enjoying the taste of Max and using my tongue to lap at the precum that came from the tip of him when Max began tugging at my shoulders. I growled deep in my throat because I knew what he was silently asking. I refused to let go of my feast.
“Fuck! Liz!” With a growl, Max sat up and pulled me from him. Even as a protest left my lips, he flipped me onto my back and immediately slid into me.
I cried out in pleasure as Max began thrusting into me hard and fast, my legs wrapping around his and my fingers digging into his back.
Max threw his head back and groaned, “Oh baby, I’m so sorry, I really wanted this to be perfect for you.”
“It’s perfect Max.” I panted, still matching him stroke for stroke, “I love you like this.”
He leaned down to look into my eyes. His were darkened with desire and love, “I love you, beautiful.”
I moaned as he deepened his strokes and as he sent me over the edge, I screamed, “I love you too, Max!”
My scream drowned out his cry of my name as he followed me over the edge, both of our bodies still caught in the throes of love making.
Even in the aftermath, we still clung to each other. Max rested his entire weight on me and I reveled in it. I let my hands caress the skin of his shoulders, back, and behind enjoying the way his muscles quivered beneath my touch.
His face was buried in my neck, where I could feel the light brush of his lips against my skin and his irregular breathing near my ear. His hands slid over my arms and sides, a thumb brushing the underside of my breast every so often sending delicious chills up my spine.
Slowly I released the grip of my legs around his and allowed him to slide away from me. He only moved to my side so that he could wrap his arms around me and pull me against him to rest. I shifted so that my back was to his front and he spooned me into his body.
He slid his arms around my waist and I curled my fingers into his as we rested. I could feel his heart beating against my shoulder blade as he nuzzled my hair. I sighed in contentment.
“I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to thank you enough for tonight, Max.” I whispered, “It was better than I could have dreamed.”
He kissed the back of my head, “I’m glad, beautiful.”
As he moved the covers over us, settling us in for the night, I added, “I love you, Max.”
“Love you too, Liz.”
Max spooned me again and as I settled back against him, enjoying the heat of his body and the way his legs tangled with mine, I murmured, “Night, handsome.”
I could feel his smile against my neck, “Night, beautiful.”
I closed my eyes and let the warmth of Max and his steady breathing lull me into a peaceful sleep.

Part 23
A knock sounded on the office door. The owner looked up from his desk and the papers he was perusing . “Come in,” he ordered.
The door opened to reveal his youngest son, “Hi dad.”
He raised a questioning eyebrow, “Isn’t it still too early for you to be up? What are you doing here son?”
The door opened wider, letting him know that his son wasn’t alone. The other young man gave him a polite smile before he said, “Forgive me sir, but I think it’s important that we had a serious talk. There’s something you should know.”
Judging from the look on the young man’s face, he knew it had to be serious and it needed to be taken care of immediately. Nodding, he gathered up the papers and cleared his desk, saying, “Very well, why don’t you two come on in and have a seat.”
As his son took a seat, the other young man closed the door before taking his own seat, waiting for his word to begin.
He sat back in his chair and looked from one to the other, before settling on the young man, “So, what is so important that has the two of you out of bed so early on this fine Sunday morning?”
“I saw something last night. Something that affects all of us,” began the young man.
He frowned, “All of us?”
He nodded, “Yes, especially your eldest daughter…”

“Liz? You awake?” I heard Max’s husky voice whispering in my ear, even as his fingers skimmed down my arm.
I sighed, “Yeah.”
He chuckled, “You sound so disappointed, beautiful.”
“Mm, well I was having this really wonderful dream.”
“Were you?” he asked as his lips pressed kisses along my shoulder and up my neck.
“Mm, hm.”
As his lips skimmed my ear, he whispered, “Do tell.”
I sighed, “I dreamed I had gone to the prom with my boyfriend and afterwards, he surprised me by taking me to this beautiful hotel suite.” I felt him chuckle as he continued to kiss my skin, “Then he bathed me and later we made love in this huge soft bed surrounded by candlelight, roses, champagne, strawberries, chocolate, and whipped cream.”
Max pulled away slightly and rolled me onto my back, saying, “Is that so?”
I opened my eyes and looked up at him. Smiling, I turned my head to take in the view of the bedroom and the reminders of the night before, “Oh! It wasn’t a dream!”
Max grinned at my wide eyes and innocent look, “No beautiful. That sounded way too good to be a dream.”
I laughed at his smugness and wrapped my arms around his shoulders, “Hm, you’re right, it was way too good.” I pulled him down for a kiss, enjoying the feel of him against the entire length of my body.
With a groan, Max pulled his lips from mine, “I thought we’d order some breakfast and enjoy ourselves for a bit before I take you back to Maria’s.”
I smiled and nodded my assent as I murmured, “And the dream continues.”

After Max and I ordered room service and sat out on the balcony wrapped up in the bed sheets eating breakfast, we took a shower together.
Like the night before, we took turns bathing each other with the sponge, but unlike the night before, one thing led to another. Soon, my arms and legs were wrapped around Max’s body as he held me up against the wall, taking his time thrusting into me.
His tongue swirled over my nipples, teasing and tasting, driving me wild. I dug my nails into his skin as I arched my body trying to drive my breasts into his mouth and his cock deeper inside me.
“God, Max!” I moaned in frustration as I desperately tried to reach the end.
His answering moan came with the mumbled words against my chest, “Soon beautiful, soon.”
Just as I was beginning to think Max was going to drive me insane with the wanting, he pressed me harder against the wall and slid one hand between our bodies. Quickly finding my bundle of nerves, he pressed and caressed, sending me over the edge with a scream.
My body gripped his in a vise like grip and it was more than enough to take him over with me. He tossed his head back and yelled my name as he released himself, “Liz! Yes!”
I held him tight, milking him with my walls as he shuddered in completion. He leaned against me, his face in my neck as he tried to regain some composure. Smiling with satisfaction, I slid my fingers through his wet hair. “Mm, I think I’m ready for a nap now, think we could stay here for another day?” I asked.
He chuckled against my neck, “Sounds great, beautiful, but I don’t think we should risk it.”
I sighed, “You’re right.”
Max stepped back and allowed me to put my feet down before letting me go. He turned off the shower and reached out for the towels, handing me one to dry off with.

Maria grinned as Max and I walked up the steps into her house. Giving me a hug she asked, “So? It was everything you’d dream it would be, right?”
I laughed, “Let me guess, you knew what Max was gonna do?”
Maria nodded as her eyes widened in innocence, “But I swear I just found out earlier this morning from Michael!”
I quirked an eyebrow, “He’s here?”
Her dazzling smile was all the answer I needed.
She hugged Max as he asked if she’d enjoyed what Michael had planned for them, to which she’d replied, “Oh, yeah. He definitely knew exactly what I’d been dreaming of.”
Max chuckled as the three of us made our way into her house to the living room, where Michael was currently lounging on the couch.
He grinned at us when we came in, “Hey bro, I see you managed to keep it together and stayed out of trouble.”
Max rolled his eyes, “Yes, Michael I did.”
I giggled, “He most certainly made sure that we forgot all about that part of the night and gave me one of the best nights of my life!”
Michael nodded, “Good. I’m glad you enjoyed yourself, Liz.” He grinned at Max as he asked me, “So, he’s still managing to sweep you off your feet huh? Guess there’s no chance of you running back to your fiancé, huh?”
Max narrowed his eyes at Michael as I swatted his arm, “What a thing to say! Didn’t I just say Max managed to make me forget about that fiasco? And here you go and bring it up again!”
“Yeah, there you go!” said Maria as she swatted Michael’s arm too.
“Ouch!”
Maria rolled her eyes, “I didn’t hit you that hard!”
“Yes, you did. Ouch! What was that for bro?” he asked when Max had swatted his other arm.
Max grinned, “I just didn’t want to feel left out.”
As Michael gave him a ‘you’re insane’ look, Maria started laughing and swatted his arm again.
This time Michael returned the swat and soon the four of us were laughing and wrestling on the floor like ten year olds.

Max and I stood just inside the door, his arms wrapped around my waist as he deepened the goodbye kiss. My arms were around his shoulders, one hand in his hair. We had been saying goodbye for the last ten minutes and still Max hadn’t left.
I pulled away for some air, my face still close enough to feel his breath against my skin. Looking into his eyes I said once more, “Thank you, for everything, Max.”
“You’re very welcome beautiful.” murmured Max as he took my lips in his again.
Maria huffed from the living room, “Okay! That is it! You two have been saying goodbye for the last twelve minutes! Michael has been long gone and I’m getting lonely over here! Max, girlfriend, you have got to leave so Liz and I can have our girl time before she has to go home!”
Max pouted at Maria, “What, I can’t join in on the girl time?”
Maria shook her head, “Nuh, uh. This is the time for Liz and I to trade stories about our boyfriends.”
“But you said I was a ‘girlfriend’.”
“Oh, now you wanna claim ‘girlfriend’ status just ‘cause it gets you closer to Liz!” She rolled her eyes, “I swear, Michael’s right. You guys are a step away from being joined at the hip!”
I giggled at the banter between Maria and Max before leaning over to nuzzle my boyfriend’s cheek. “Maria’s right, handsome. It’s time for you to go.”
He sighed, “Okay, call me later?”
I nodded and gave him a quick kiss on the lips as Maria started to protest again. I quelled her protest with a look before turning back to Max, “I love you, handsome.”
He grinned, “Love you too, beautiful.”
He let go of me and opened the door as I told him, “Bye Max, I’ll call you later.”
He waved to me as he walked to his car, “I’ll be waiting.”
As Max got into his car, he couldn’t hear Maria mumble, “Geez, could the man get any more sickeningly sweet?”
I waited until Max had driven away before I turned to Maria, hands on my hips, “Oh no you don’t girlfriend! I know for a fact that Michael can get just as sweet as Max and you love every moment of it.”
Maria opened her mouth to say something, thought better of it, and shut her mouth again.
I nodded, “Yeah, I thought so.”

Maria and I spent a few hours talking about our prom nights over ice cream in her room. She ‘ooh’ed and ‘aww’ed through my narration of the hotel suite and the things Max had done for me. Of course, I didn’t go into detail about what we did exactly, but she knew about the champagne, roses, food, and other items that had made the night so special. I described the room in great detail, especially the tub and bed which I had thought was the softest thing I’d ever slept on. I also told her how we’d woken up to order room service and ate our breakfast out on the balcony.
Maria told me about the rest of her night with Michael. They had stayed for another hour after Max and I had left, then they had gone to Michael’s house. Michael had decorated the place up for her with candles and daisies spread out through his rooms.
He’d blindfolded her before taking her into the house. Inside, he’d made her sit on the couch until he had lit all of the candles, then he’d taken the blindfold off and allowed her to see what he’d done. Maria said that she was so overwhelmed by his thoughtfulness that she had burst out crying, which sent Michael into a panic.
She had ended up laughing at his scared expressions and they’d kissed as she told him over and over again how happy he’d made her.
Michael had made Maria lie on her stomach in the middle of the bed and he’d given her a body rub. She said that by the time Michael had finished the entire session, she’d been purring like a contented kitten. And she’d been horny as hell.
Needless to say, after that, she and Michael had spent the rest of their time wrapped up in each others arms.
She had loved waking up in his arms that morning, saying that both she and Michael admitted to have missed that from when we all were at the beach house. I told her that Max complained about that all the time ever since we had returned from that Spring Break. He never missed a chance to tell me how much he missed waking up with me besides him.
So prom night and the morning after was definitely a pleasure for all four of us. I had woken up in Max’s arms and Maria had woken up in Michael’s. Then, Michael had cooked breakfast for the two of them while she had showered. After they had eaten, Michael took his shower as Maria cleaned up the kitchen.
They had returned to her house soon after that and cuddled on the couch, making out until Max and I had shown up. That last bit had made me laugh and once again I pointed out that even she and Michael could get sickly sweet just as much as Max and I could.

It was nearly six in the evening when I returned to my house. My father had told me to return home by six p.m. on Sunday and I’d managed to make it a few minutes earlier than that.
The house was pretty quiet when I entered and I knew no one was home since most of the cars were not in the driveway. All I saw was mom’s car, but usually she and dad would take the same car if they were spending most of the day together.
I closed the front door and made my way through the house, heading for my room. I wouldn’t have minded if anyone had been home. The only one that would have bothered me was Kevin, so I was extremely thankful his car wasn’t there.
Opening the door to my bedroom, I stepped inside and tossed my bag on the bed. As I turned to close the door, the light came on and my father stood just behind the door, glaring at me.
I let out a startled yelp and clutched my chest, “God, dad! You scared me! What are you doing here in the dark?”
His eyes narrowed as he responded, “Waiting for you.”
I frowned, “Something wrong?”
He moved away from the door and sat in one of my chairs against the wall, “Why don’t you tell me.”
“What? Nothing’s wrong, at least not that I know of.”
“Is that so, Elizabeth?”
The tone of his voice and the fact that he’d just used my full name told me that he knew something and he was just about to tell me.
I stared at him for a moment as it began to dawn on me, what my father could be upset about. I had almost forgotten about the fiasco of the night before.
“Seems that we’ve all been a little too trusting with you. And once again, you went and made all of us look bad, including your fiancé!”
Taking a deep breath, I looked him in the eye and said, “Kyle is not my fiancé.”
“You are getting married in June! How can he not be your fiancé?”
“I’m not marrying Kyle, dad. We’ve been over this before.” I kept my voice neutral, hoping that it would keep my father from going off on a tangent. Luck wasn’t with me at that point.
“Oh yes you are!” he bellowed, “Your mother and I have bent over backwards planning this wedding of yours! We’ve done everything to make sure it all goes smoothly and we’ve been doing our best to keep the Valentis calm and happy! Then what do you go and do? I had to find this out from Kyle! Your fiancé! How dare you go to the prom with someone else! How dare you make him look bad in front of all of those people! You know they are going to talk! And now I’m going to have to bend over backwards again to clean up this mess you’ve made! You should be the one over there apologizing to the Valentis for humiliating them like that! You better be glad Kyle is willing to overlook this latest fiasco of yours! Let’s just hope his parents are that understanding!”
“What! Don’t you get it! I. Am. Not. Going. To. Marry. Kyle!” I yelled, punctuating each word with a stomp of my foot.
“You WILL marry Kyle and you WILL stop gallivanting around town with those deadbeat friends of yours! Do I make myself clear?”
This time I narrowed my eyes at him and growled, “NO!”
He stood there stunned for a moment before he answered my growl, “What did you just say?”
I shook my head, “No! I will not marry Kyle and I will not stop seeing my friends. You can’t run my life for me! Neither can Kyle! I will not become a pawn for either of you!”
“You don’t even know what you are getting yourself into! How can you believe those friends of yours even like you! Don’t you know they are just using you! They are after your money and anything else they know they can get from you! You need to stop being so gullible and open your eyes, Elizabeth!”
“My eyes are wide open! It’s yours that are closed! You won’t even see what a jerk Kyle is!”
“You will not talk about him that way!”
I growled, “God, dad! Stop for a minute and think, if Kyle told you I went to the prom with someone else, how did he know? Unless he was there too! He was dad! With another girl.”
“Can you blame him for taking another date when his own fiance refused to go with him?”
“Dad! He slept with her! He’s slept with others too! Kyle has never been faithful to me! Don’t you get that!”
“This wouldn’t be happening if you wouldn’t keep turning him away!”
My jaw dropped open at that, “What?”
“If you had stayed with him in the first place, he wouldn’t be turning to others!”
I growled, “If he’s so gung ho on walking around and claiming that I’m his fiance, the least he could do is act like it. Instead, he’s sleeping with every girl who opens her legs for him!”
Without warning, the flat of my father’s palm connected with my cheek. I stumbled against the side of the bed and covered my reddened cheek with my hand, looking up at him. I was completely stunned.
My father didn’t even bat an eyelash as he spoke in a commanding voice, “You are grounded. For the rest of the school year! You will go to school and come straight home. You will not talk to anyone, you will not hang out with anyone. You will apologize to Kyle and his parents for everything you’ve done to embarrass them. In time you will realize that your so called friends were just using you. I know their kind Elizabeth. All they want is to seduce you into giving them whatever they want. And you played right into their hands. Through you they would have gotten all of my money and they would have tried to take everything else from me. You are too naïve to see it!”
As tears of frustration welled in my eyes, I whispered, “Max wasn’t using me! He loves me! Why can’t you understand? Max is…”
“Not another word, Elizabeth! You have no idea what that man is capable of! He’s old enough to know how to seduce young, naïve girls like you.”
I shook my head, “No, Max wouldn’t do that. Dad, listen to me! He’s not who you think! Max is the son of…”
“Enough Elizabeth!” He roared. “I will not tolerate any more back talk from you! I’ve said my piece and you WILL do as I say this time or I will lock you in this room until the day of the wedding! Don’t you dare leave this room!” With that, he stalked from the room, slamming the door behind him and leaving me in silence.

I stood in the middle of my bedroom, letting my hand finally slip away from my tender cheek. As I let my gaze wander over every thing in the room, I knew there wasn’t anything else left to do. My father wasn’t even going to give me the chance to explain. He wasn’t even going to listen to the truth about Max or Kyle. Nothing I could ever say would ever change his mind.
I sighed and walked over to the bag on the bed. Opening it up, I began putting other things into it and packed two more bags full of all the things I couldn’t leave behind. Once I was done packing, I picked up the phone on the nightstand and dialed the number, waiting until I heard his voice.
“Hello?”
“Max? I need you to come get me.”
“What? Liz, you okay?”
My lips trembled as a sob escaped, “He wouldn’t listen. He wouldn’t let me explain. There’s no other way out Max. Please, come get me. I’m already packed.”
There was a moment of silence before he said, “Okay. I’m on my way, beautiful.”
I nodded as I heard the dial tone and set the phone back in the cradle. Turning around, I surveyed the room once more. I slowly sat on the edge of the bed as tears began to fall freely down my cheeks.

Part 24
I stood in the door of Max’s bedroom and let my gaze wander over everything in the room. I was trying to get used to the idea that this was my new home.
After I had made the call to Max, he’d made it to my house in less than ten minutes. Wisely, he’d called me back and told me he was outside waiting for me. Still feeling shell shocked, I’d managed to gather up my bags and toss them out of my bedroom window where Max was waiting. I’d climbed out after them, landing in Max’s arms. Once he was certain I was able to walk, he’d gathered up my bags and led me to his car. Soon, we were on our way back to his house where he’d told me to go on in and he’d get my bags.
“Hey,” he whispered, jolting me out of my musings. “You okay?”
I nodded as I moved out of the way, allowing Max to take my bags into his bedroom. I stood against the wall and watched as he set them down on the floor next to the closet before walking over to his chest of drawers.
He opened two drawers and began piling his things into one, emptying out the other. As he worked he said, “Okay, I can combine my clothes into two drawers so that’ll leave two for you. And there’s plenty of room in the closet for me to have one side and you the other. If you still need more room, we can just work on finding the space. I can even go out and buy another set of drawers if I have to, okay?”
When I didn’t say anything, he stopped working and looked up at me, “Liz?”
I blinked, “Huh?”
He frowned, straightened up, and walked over to me. Sliding a hand up my arm he asked, “Are you sure you’re okay, beautiful?”
At his endearment, my lips began to tremble. A sob escaped my lips and Max pulled me into his arms.
He walked me over to the bed and sat down, holding me close, “It’s going to be okay, beautiful. Everything will work out, you’ll see.”
Max allowed me to cry against his chest as he caressed my back and continued to whisper soothing words to me. He held me until the last sob finally faded from my body.

Maria was waiting for me at my locker the next morning. After Max had dropped me off with a kiss and promise that he would be there to pick me up after school, I’d shouldered my bag and walked silently into the building.
“Liz!” I looked up in time to see her quickly move to my side, enveloping me in a hug, “Michael told me what happened. How are you holding up?”
I returned her hug with a sigh, “I’m doing better now, thanks.”
Maria released me so that I could get my books from my locker. “Want to tell me what really happened?”
I shrugged, “What we all knew would happen. I got home and found my father waiting for me in my bedroom. We had words. He still refuses to believe me over Kyle and grounded me until school is over.”
Maria frowned, “You’re kidding! Did he know you went to prom with Max?”
“Yeah, Kyle told him and I told him that the reason Kyle knew I was there was because he’d gone to prom with another girl whom he’d slept with.”
“No! You didn’t!”
“Yes I did and I told him she wasn’t the only one he’d slept with.”
“Liz! God! What did he say to that?”
I gritted my teeth, “He said Kyle wouldn’t have felt the need to stray if I’d just slept with him myself.”
Maria gasped in mortification, “What!”
“Yep, and then he grounded me. Of course, that was after he’d also slapped me.”
Now Maria was livid, “He hit you!”
I turned to look at her, “He slapped me and told me I was grounded and forbidden to hang out with any of my friends anymore. He said they were all just using me to get to his money and everything else and I was too naïve to see it. I even tried to tell him who Max really was, so he could understand that he’s not using me, but my father wouldn’t even let me say a word.” I lowered my head as I repeated, “He wouldn’t even let me say a word.”
“Oh Liz,” Maria whispered as she wrapped an arm around my shoulder.
I looked up at her and smiled, “It’s okay. I’m better now. Max and I talked last night after he comforted me. I think I was just shocked that it actually happened even though I knew it would. But we talked and Max told me there are things I can do to make sure my father or Kyle can’t touch me. He’s looking into it while I’m here at school. He said he’d have some info by the time he comes to pick me up after school.”
Maria nodded, “Right. What can they really do Liz? Your father can’t really tell you what to do since you are already eighteen years old and you have a job, so you can support yourself.”
I nodded, “I know that, but this is my father we are talking about. I know he’ll find some way to try to control me. That’s why Max is checking things out. To make sure my father won’t be able to throw some strange court order or something at me.”
Maria nodded, “I hear you. He’s covering all your bases.”
I grinned, “Yep.”
As the bell began to ring signaling the beginning of the school day, I slipped my arm into Maria’s and we walked towards our first class.
Maria chuckled and when I gave her a questioning look, she asked, “So, how’s it feel to actually get to live with your boyfriend and wake up to him every day now?”
As she wiggled her eyebrows suggestively, I gave her a dreamy smile, “It’s heaven,” I breathed.
As we walked into our first class, we were giggling like the love struck teenagers we were.

Thankfully, the day went by smoothly without any drama. I didn’t even see Kevin or Kyle, whom I was certain would be harassing me since I moved out. I thought my father would have thrown a fit once he realized I was gone and made sure the entire house knew about it. I was even expecting him to come parading into the school to find me, but he never showed up and I didn’t see hide nor hair of Kevin or Kyle.
Of course, I should have known they’d all be there waiting to ambush me after school. As I made my way to the area where students were picked up or dropped off by cars or buses, I could see Max’s car waiting in line with the rest. I smiled at him when he saw me and smiled. With a skip in my step, I made my way through the other students towards my boyfriend until I noticed the familiar black Mercedes parked not to far from the line Max was in.
Max noticed the smile fading from my lips as I slowed my steps. I squared my shoulders, lifted my chin, and prepared for the drama I knew was coming. Even though I was looking directly at the Mercedes, I saw Max turn his head to look at what I was looking at before he quickly looked behind him to make sure he could get out of line without causing a collision.
As Max drove his car into a parking space, I walked to the edge of the sidewalk where Kevin and Kyle were waiting. Both of them were wearing cocky grins.
I looked from one to the other before looking off towards Max, who was now getting out of his car. “Well, if it isn’t dumb and dumber,” I drawled.
“Whatever.” answered Kevin, “Dad wants a word with you.”
I glared at him, “What? It isn’t enough to be Kyle’s lackey, now you gotta be father’s too?”
Kyle rolled his eyes, “Look, you’re going to go over there and talk to him or we can do this the hard way.”
Now I glared at Kyle, “Ooooh. I’m so scared.” I growled at him, “Go ahead, touch me, I’ll scream bloody murder.” Before either one of them could say another word, I walked briskly by them and headed towards the Mercedes.
My father got out of the car and moved to the front of it when he saw me making my way towards him. Max waited until he saw me walking towards my father before he too began to make his way over there.
I reached my father first with a “I’m told you wanted a word.”
My father narrowed his eyes, “Just what did you think you were going to accomplish by sneaking out of the house last night?”
“Gee, let me think. I figured since you didn’t want to listen to a word I had to say, I’d just go somewhere else where someone would listen.”
“Oh, really and what makes you think he’ll listen once he finds out the money isn’t there anymore?”
That made me laugh. I knew that was coming. And I couldn’t help but keep on laughing at the absurdity of it all. All I could think was that this was sounding ridiculously like what Max had gone through all those years ago. Only this time, I knew Max wouldn’t disappear the way his so called friends had.
My father, Kyle, and Kevin stared at me like I’d lost my mind until I managed to catch my breath. When I did, I sighed, “Oh come on! This is like a scene out of one of those Molly Ringwald movies back in the eighties! Really, father, do you think I’d toe your line by threatening me to take all the money away?” I asked. “Cause you must be forgetting that I already have a job. Oh, and I have something else you haven’t seen yet.”
Kyle arched an eyebrow, “And what exactly is that?”
I grinned and pointed to Max who had been standing behind my father’s car, out of sight, “I have him.”
They all turned to look at Max who was now making his way towards us. My father turned back to me with a frown, “That guy? Maybe I didn’t make myself clear. If you stay with him, I will disown you!”
I rolled my eyes, “Trust me, I got that the first time.”
Max walked past the three of them, ignoring them until he was standing at my side. As he did, he slid an arm around my waist and kissed my cheek, “Hi honey,” he said, “are we having problems already?”
I sighed, “He’s disowning me for living with you.”
Kyle growled, “You’re living with him! Are you out of your mind?” He turned to my father, “You’re going to let her shack up with that?”
Before my father could say a word, I snapped at Kyle, “Listen, Mr. Valenti, this conversation is between me, my father, and my boyfriend only. Why don’t you go and find your latest bimbo and see if she wants to play with you? And while you’re at it, take dopey here with you.” I finished, jerking my thumb at Kevin.
He took a step towards me which made Max tense up besides me, but my father held up a placating hand.
“Kyle, listen why don’t you and Kevin head back to the house. Liz and I will meet you there in few, okay?”
I wasn’t going back to the house with him, but Max and I knew better than to say anything until they were gone. Thankfully, Kyle gave my father a look before finally nodding and telling Kevin he’d meet him at the house.
We waited until the two of them had left before my father turned to look at me with a frown, “Now, do you mind explaining to me what you meant by that comment you made about your living arrangements?”
I rolled my eyes, “It wasn’t a comment. It’s the truth.”
“You’re not living with him Liz.”
“Yes I am.”
“I am your father! I make the decisions!”
“Actually, Mr. Parker, you can’t legally make any decisions for Liz anymore.” Max said, in a very calm, yet authoritative voice.
It was enough to make my father finally acknowledge him, “What is that supposed to mean?”
“It means Liz is eighteen years old and has a job. Since she is legally an adult and has a means of income, you can’t legally make any decisions about her life.”
My father narrowed his eyes at him, “Now you listen to me young man, I don’t know who you think you are, but this is my daughter we are talking about. I know what kind of life she’s used to and I know she will keep wanting that lifestyle. She can’t have it on the salary from her so called job and I can guarantee you can’t give it to her either.”
“Father!” I muttered, “Do you think maybe you could get off your soap box for a few minutes and listen to me!”
“Soap box! I’m just…”
“Listen to me!” I shouted, “I am not a little girl anymore and you will just have to get used to it! Now, there’s some things you have to know! One, I have never lived that lifestyle you claim I do. That’s Kevin and mom! Two, you can keep your money and everything else ‘cause I don’t want it and when you go back to the house, take a look around my old room. You’ll find I only took the things I bought with my own money. Everything you ever got me is still there! Including the cell phone and the car! And finally, number three! Father, I’d like you to officially meet the man you claim is using me to get to your money!”
I turned to Max as I continued, “Meet Maxwell Evans, he’s the eldest son of Phillip Evans. I’m sure you’ve heard of that name. You know, Evans Architectural Firms?” At my father’s stunned look I added, “Yeah, the one that Max will inherit when it’s his turn! So, you see, I don’t need anything from you and I would appreciate it if you, Kyle, and everyone else just stayed away from me!” With that, I grabbed Max’s hand and growled, “Let’s go, it’s been a long day and I’m getting a headache.”
Max let me drag him off even as he turned his head and nodded to my father, “Nice to meet you Mr. Parker, see you around.”
All my father could do was stand there gaping at the two of us as we climbed into Max’s Ferrari and headed home.

“Mmmm Liz,” Max moaned into my mouth as I continued to strip him of his clothes. I’d already stripped mine off the minute we’d gotten inside of his apartment, then I’d attacked his mouth and proceeded to get him as naked as I was.
“Yes, baby, you taste good too.” I mumbled against his lips.
“I thought you had a headache?” he whispered as my lips made their way down his throat towards his chest.
“It’s going away.” I answered between licks of his skin.
“Oh.” That was all he said for a few moments as I continued to make my way down his chest and abdomen. “Liz?”
“Hm?” I murmured as I nibbled his hip.
“Don’t you think you were a little harsh with your father?”
“Nope.”
“Liz…”
“Max,” I said as I lifted my head to look up at him from where I was now kneeling, “less talk, more play.”
“I think we need to talk about this.”
I nodded, “We’ll talk. But later.” With that, I leaned in and licked his cock from the base to the tip.
Max gasped and his head fell back against the wall as I took the length of him into my mouth. It effectively ended all conversation as his hands buried themselves in my hair, guiding me into the rhythm he liked. I curled one hand around the base of him as I continued to suck on him, tightening the grip of both hand and mouth.
Suddenly Max growled and tugged on my shoulders, “Beautiful, stop.”
I growled a no, but Max was persistent. “Lizzz!” he hissed, “I want to taste you too!”
That got my attention. I let go of him and Max lifted me up into his arms, carrying me into the bedroom.
He lay me on the bed, pulling me down until my hips were at the edge of the bed, before he went down to his knees. He lifted my legs and hooked my knees over his shoulders before leaning in and blowing against my heated skin.
I gasped as I heard him whisper, “You are so beautiful.”
Then I felt his tongue taking one long lick up to my bundle of nerves before he took it into his mouth and gently sucked. I arched off the bed with a long low moan of his name as he continued to swirl his tongue over my clit and slowly slid a finger inside of me.
Lifting my hips, I used my legs as leverage to bring him closer to my core. He readily obeyed my moans as he continued to pleasure me. Soon, his tongue was alternately sliding in and out of me and flicking my clit, making me dig my fingers into the bed spread and tighten my grip on his shoulders.
As he took my clit into his mouth once more and began sucking harder, he slid two fingers inside of me, pumping them in time to the movements of his mouth. It didn’t take long before I was screaming his name in ecstasy as a powerful orgasm took hold of me.
Max spent a few moments lapping up my juices before peeling my legs off his shoulders and standing up. I was still lost in the aftershocks rippling through my body, but I was aware of him shifting me until I was fully laying on the bed and he was sliding his body over mine.
I moaned in bliss when he pressed my body down into the mattress with his and immediately slid into me. He lifted my legs and wrapped them around his hips before sliding his hands up my thighs, past my hips, and to my breasts.
As he began to slide in and out of me, he cupped my breasts in his hands and teased the nipples with his thumbs. I arched into his hands with a whimper, tightening my legs around his hips to take him deeper.
Max gave me a deep hungry kiss before burying his face in my neck and picking up his speed. I wrapped my arms around his body and slid my hands down his back enjoying the feel of his muscles moving beneath my hands.
When I gripped his ass in my hands, he threw his head back and groaned, “Liz, I’m close, beautiful.”
“I know, Max.” I panted, “So am I.”
I lifted my head and licked his collar bone, all the while gripping his behind in my hands and meeting him thrust for thrust.
Just as I gasped and threw my head back against the bed, Max yelled my name as he came hard inside of me.
I went over the edge with him shouting, “Yes! God yes! Maxxx!”

“Liz?” I heard Max whisper later, as we both lay tangled together, dozing on and off.
“Hm?”
“I know you’re angry with him, but he’s still your father.”
I sighed, “Not now Max.”
He tightened his arm that was wrapped around my waist, keeping my body glued to his, “Just promise me you’ll think about this. I was angry at my own father once, you know that. But we eventually talked things out. Just give him some time, then talk to him again. He should be ready to listen to you then.”
“Okay.”
“Promise?”
“Yes.”
He kissed my cheek, whispering, “I love you.”
I sighed dreamily and cuddled closer to him, burying my face against his chest, “I love you too, Max.”
We lay in silence for a few moments until he spoke up once more, “Weren’t you supposed to be at work this evening?”
Suddenly I was wide awake as I scrambled out of bed, “Shit!” I looked at the clock as I made my way to the closet, “Why didn’t you say something sooner!”
He chuckled, “Sorry, I was kind of distracted.”
I stuck my tongue out at him, “You’re such a man!”
He gave me his trademark smirk as he folded his arms behind his head, “Yeah, but I’m your man.”
I laughed as I grabbed a shirt and skirt from the closet and made my way to the bathroom, “Can you call the store and let Tess know I might be a few minutes late?”
“Sure.”
I stuck my head out of the bathroom to add, “Make sure you tell her that it was your fault.” I grinned at him.
He narrowed his eyes at me, “It was not! You attacked me!”
“Yeah, well, you didn’t have to make it so easy did you?”
He threw a pillow at me as I ducked back into the bathroom, laughter from the both of us filling the apartment.

Part 25
Over the next couple of weeks, Max and I began to fall into a comfortable routine of living together. I knew he was happy to wake up with me in his arms just as I was happy to wake up with him.

“Liz?”
I giggled.
“I knew it! Pretending to be asleep huh?”
“No, just lying here enjoying what you’re doing to me.”
“Oh, like that huh?” he asked as his fingers continued to stroke my folds.
“Mm hm, but I’d like it better if you were stroking me with something else.”
He chuckled, “Is that so?”
I gasped as he slid two fingers inside of me, while his other hand continued stroking my bundle of nerves.
“How’s that beautiful?” he huskily asked.
I moaned, “Feels good, Max, but I want more than your fingers.”
He leaned his head down and slid his tongue over my clit before sliding it inside of me.
I moaned again and grabbed the sheets as he continued to spear me with his tongue. After doing that a few times, he blew against my clit and whispered, “Was that what you wanted?”
I shook my head, unable to speak for the moment as my body trembled from his ministrations.
He took a long lick from one end to the other, making me hiss in frustration. I sat up and grabbed his shoulders, tugging him towards me.
As he landed on top of me with a chuckle, I growled “I want your cock inside of me, Max.”
I wrapped my legs around his waist , my arms around his shoulders, and lifted my head bringing my lips to his ear. “I want you buried so deep inside me, that you won’t be able to leave me.”
I nipped at his ear as I whispered, “I want you to make me scream your name.”
Max groaned at that, but quickly poised himself over me. With a quick motion, my hips lifted to meet his as he buried himself inside of me.
I heard his trembling voice, “Like this beautiful?”
“Yes,” I panted, “More, Max. Give me more.”
I clung to him like a life preserver. Our bodies were in perfect sync with each others. Hips thrusting to meet the others, skin sliding against skin, our breaths coming out in short pants.
Max lowered his forehead against mine. As we looked into each others eyes, I could feel the end nearing.
He knew it too because I saw him smile, right before he shifted his hips, ensuring that his thrusts found my pleasure point.
The moment it did, I threw back my head and screamed, “Maaaaaax!”
Max growled in answer as he continued to pound into me, prolonging my orgasm.
As I clenched my entire body around his, and tightened my walls even more, Max’s eyes went wide as he yelled my name, emptying himself inside of me.
Twenty minutes later, the alarm went off.
I laughed beneath Max, “I like it when you are my alarm better than that thing.”
He grinned against my neck, “I’ll be your alarm anytime, beautiful.”

During the week, Max would take me to school and Maria would take me home.

“It’s about time!” exclaimed Maria as she waited for me near the entrance of school.
I looked up to see her standing there with her hands on her hips and her foot tapping in agitation.
“What? The bell hasn’t even rung yet.” I replied.
She rolled her eyes, “Yeah, but you spent a good fifteen minutes saying goodbye to Max! It’s not like you’re never going to see him again. And you’ve already been living with him for a week and two days!”
I grinned, “What can I say? I’m addicted.”
Maria huffed, but when I widened my eyes in shock and gasped, she worriedly asked, “What? What is it?”
I turned to her and whispered, “It’s getting worse! I’m going through withdraws already!”
“Liz!” she said, her voice sounded exasperated.
I laughed as we walked into the building together.
“So, are we going straight home after school today or can you hang out with me for a while?” she asked.
I nodded, “I told Max you and I were going to your house for a couple of hours, so he knows not to expect me home until later.”
“And he was okay with that?” At my nod, she added, “Good, ‘cause I figured he’d want you to spend your day off from work with him.”
I shrugged, “He’s got me when I’m not in school or at work. So, he’s cool. Plus, Sundays are ours.”
Maria wiggled her eyebrows, “I can just imagine what you two do all day!”
We both giggled conspiratorially.

If I had to work, Max took me there and picked me up.

“Hey beautiful.”
“Hey yourself.” I smiled as I bounced up to meet him. He was sitting on his bike, waiting to take me home from work. As I approached him, he slid his arm around my waist and pulled me close for a kiss.
Once I was breathless, he pulled away and asked, “How was work?”
I grinned, “It was okay. Kind of slow, but Tess kept me occupied with her stories about all the wedding planning and organizing she and Zan have been doing.”
Max chuckled. “How’s that coming?” He asked as he helped me onto the bike behind him.
“Great! Tess is loving it. You should see how animated she gets when she’s talking about the things she and Zan have planned for the wedding. Her enthusiasm is really infectious.” I answered as I wrapped my arms around his waist and leaned against him.
He nodded as he started the bike, then turned his head towards me with a smile, “I’ll bet you’ll be just as enthusiastic as she is when you get married.”
I returned his smile, “We’ll just have to wait and see.”
He winked at me before turning back around and driving us out of the mall’s parking lot.

On school nights, I did my homework on the living room floor while Max made himself scarce because we both knew if we were in the same room together, I’d find him much more interesting than my homework.

“Mm, Liz, homework.” Max mumbled against my lips.
“In a minute.” I mumbled back as my hands wandered under his shirt and up his chest.
He grabbed my wrists and pulled back, “Liz.”
“It’ll still be there later.”
“Yeah, but it’ll be too late and you’ll be tired.”
“No I won’t.” I leaned in for another kiss, but Max stopped me.
I pouted, “Can’t I have just one more kiss?”
He grinned, “You don’t want just a kiss, beautiful.”
“Please?”
He groaned, “Don’t make those eyes at me.”
I whimpered and stuck my lip out a little more. I knew he would cave.
His lips covered mine as he dragged me to the couch and pushed me down onto it. With a growl, he pressed his body down on mine and said, “I knew it was a bad idea to come out of the bedroom.”
I closed my eyes in bliss as Max nibbled his way down my neck. His hand had found it’s way under my shirt to fondle my breast. “Mm, but then I would have gone to the bedroom to look for you and wouldn’t have come out again until tomorrow.”
He chuckled against my collarbone, “True.”
We didn’t say anything else as our hands and mouths became busy with removing clothes and touching skin.
As he entered me, he moaned, “Once beautiful. Then when you’re satisfied, you go back to doing your homework.”
I arched up to meet his strokes, “Promise. Mm, God Max, you feel so good.”
Max panted, “You feel good too baby.”

On Sundays, we’d sleep late and spend the day being lazy.

“Max?”
“Hm?”
“Are we gonna stay in bed all day?”
“Um hm.”
“Why don’t we go to the movies?”
“Too far.”
“Well, let’s go out to dinner.”
“Don’t want to get dressed.”
“Then we’ll have a big dinner here. You can teach me how to cook something.”
“I’d rather learn every single one of your curves.”
“But you already know all my curves!”
“Not good enough. I need to study them some more.”
“Max!”
“Shh, beautiful, I need to concentrate.”
“Max.”
“Mm.”
“Oh, Max.”
"Liz."
"I love you so much, Max."
"I love you too beautiful."

One Friday night, we made a double date with Maria and Michael. We met them at Maria’s favorite Mexican restaurant where Michael had made reservations for the four of us at eight.
We were seated in a booth, one couple per side. While we waited for our food to arrive, we chatted amongst ourselves. Actually, Maria and I would have our own conversation while Max and Michael talked about something else.
When the food came, Max and I noticed how Maria and Michael would eat off of each other’s plates. They made a cute picture with their arms linked together on the table and their forks in their other hand, taking food from each other’s plates.
Max placed his arm around my shoulder and fed me my food. I returned the favor, by feeding him his. In between bites, we’d kiss and snuggle. I had been expecting to hear Maria teasing us about being too sweet for her to handle until I glanced over at them and saw them lip locked.
Max and I just gaped as they looked like they were trying to inhale each other right there in the restaurant.
After a few moments, Max waded up his napkin and tossed it at Michael, “Hey! We’re in a public restaurant bro! Want to tone it down a bit?”
Michael immediately pulled away from Maria and looked embarrassed, “Sorry.”
Maria wasn’t the least bit remorseful, “Oh please! As if you two haven’t been like this before! In fact, I know you’ve been worse.”
“We have not!” I protested.
“Liz! I have eyes you know! I saw you and Max making out in the parking lot just the other day.”
“Maria! We were not!”
“Oh yes you were! Max had his hand up your…”
“Maria!” Max cleared his throat, “I don’t think we should be discussing that here, hm?”
She batted her eyelashes at him, “Girlfriend, I wasn’t discussing anything. I was merely stating a fact.”
Michael sat next to her grinning, “She’s right, bro. You just can’t keep your hands off your girlfriend any more than I can keep my hands off mine.”

Michael was right because after we finally left the restaurant, in time to make it to the ten o’clock showing of the cheesy action movie that Michael had picked, we found ourselves in the back of the theater making out. We all knew that’s why Michael had picked the movie. Not even ten minutes into it, Max decided I was more interesting than the movie and slid the arm rest up, pulling me into his lap.
Michael had pounced on Maria the moment the lights went down. She’d protested at first, but the movie was too boring for her to resist Michael’s attention. Michael had her leaning back against the seat as he leaned over her and kissed her, blocking her view of the screen and shielding her from anyone who turned around to look.
I was sitting sideways in Max’s lap, my legs stretched out on the seat besides him. I draped one arm around his shoulders and held his face with the other hand as he kissed me. Max held me with one arm around my waist while the other hand slid up my thigh slowly.
I slid my hand down from his face to his chest, resting it against his heart. As we continued to kiss, his hand wandered beneath my skirt and stroked me over my panties.
I pulled my lips from his and whispered, “Max!”
He pulled me back to him as he whispered, “Come on Liz, think you can be quieter than Maria?”
I glanced over at Maria to see that Michael was shielding her from view, but I was able to see her from the side. As they kissed, Michael had his hand down her pants. She had her legs wide open and it didn’t take a genius to know what Michael was doing to her.
Turning away from them, I looked back at Max. “Did you guys plan this?”
He grinned, “I didn’t, but I’m glad Michael did.”
He tugged me close to him again, covering my mouth with his. This time I didn’t argue when he slid his hand up my skirt again and slowly pushed his fingers past the elastic. Instead, I slid my hand down and cupped him over his pants.
As he slid his fingers inside of me, I began to rub my hand against his bulge. I could feel him getting bigger even as his breathing was becoming more ragged. My own breathing was beginning to match his.
It amazed me that we were able to remain so quiet even as our movements got faster and our hands pushed each other closer to the edge. I was the first to come as Max slid his thumb over my clit, rubbing it faster and faster until I came. Even as the tremors shook me, I continued to stroke him through his pants until I felt him jerk and let out a soft sigh against my lips.
Needless to say, when we left that theater, Max had his shirt hanging out to cover his pants and I was extremely grateful that I had worn a skirt. As it turned out, Maria had to wear Michael’s jacket as they followed us out of the theater.
They told us they were going to stop for gas before meeting us at the club Max and I had chosen for the night. Later at school, Maria told me that she and Michael had gone into the restroom outside the gas station so that she could return the favor Michael had given her in the theater.
When they had shown up at Alternate Dance, a club that was located at The Sidewalk, nearly an hour had passed and Maria was now wearing a skirt. Max and I were already on the dance floor enjoying ourselves, when they showed up and joined us there.
The four of us enjoyed ourselves as we danced for the rest of the night. Sometimes Maria and I would dance together, while Michael and Max stayed slightly back, swaying and watching us. Other times, we traded partners and I would dance with Michael while Max danced with Maria.
Still, even when Max and I were partners, it was fun. There were songs where Max would twirl me around, spin me, or dip me. There were other songs were we danced as if we were making love right there on the dance floor. And there were still others were we would simply have our arms wrapped around each other, either gazing into each others eyes or I’d rest my head against his chest while his cheek was pressed against the top of my head.
We all took plenty of breaks to get our breaths back and to quench our thirst. Max and Michael had started out drinking alcohol, while Maria and I had our sodas, but half way through the night, we’d all switched to water because we were all working up a sweat.
We left about thirty minutes before the club closed and met at a 24 hour waffle place where we laughed and talked about the fun time we’d all had that night. Max and I shared a plate of pancakes topped with strawberries and whipped cream while Michael and Maria had crepes.
The most amazing thing was that when Max and I made it home later, we were both still so wired up that we spent the remaining hours until dawn making love in the living room and the bedroom. That night, Max and I bent our bodies in so many positions, it was a wonder either one of us was able to walk the next day.
As it was, we slept until I had to get up and get ready for work. I protested all the way to the shower and thought hot water had never felt so good against my skin. Max joined me a few minutes later, but we were too sore to do anything other than bathe each other.
All too soon we got out and got ready so that Max could drive me to work for the day. Still, I’d never imagined that living with the man I loved could be so wonderful.

Okay, here it is...

Part 26
Max and I had been living together for a little over two weeks when Isabel came over for dinner on Wednesday night. Since I was off that night, Max and I had asked Isabel over for dinner which he and I both cooked.
Throughout the whole time I’d been living with Max, Isabel and I had kept in touch with each other and she’d kept me up to date on what was going on with Alex, Serena, and the rest of my family. We’d all just been too busy to get together, but we finally asked her over for a delicious home cooked meal.

“Hi!” I grinned and hugged Isabel before stepping back and ushering her into the apartment.
“Hi, Liz. You’re looking great I see.”
I chuckled, “Yeah, what can I say, life agrees with me.”
She giggled, “Actually, that should be Max agrees with you.”
“Okay, that sounds much better,” I agreed.
“Hey Izzy,” Max greeted as he came out of the kitchen.
She smiled and gave him a hug as she said hello to him too.
“Did Alex get to Phoenix safely?” he asked.
“Yep. I talked to him for a bit right before I came over here.” She turned to look at me as she continued, “He said to tell you hi and that he misses you.”
“Tell him I miss him too. Maybe I’ll see him when he gets back. We could all get together and he can finally meet Max.”
Isabel smiled, “That would be great.”

The three of us had moved into the kitchen where I worked at the island, chopping vegetables and mixing them into the salad. Isabel stood on the other side of the island talking to Max and I while Max was over by the stove, finishing up with the chicken fried steak he’d made using Michael’s own special recipe.
As I set the table out on the balcony, Max spooned the mashed potatoes and green beans into two bowls which Isabel took out to the table. I took the bread out of the oven and placed them in a basket while Max placed the chicken fried steak on a large platter. As we sat down to dinner, I poured iced tea into our glasses and Max told Isabel to make sure to save room for dessert.

Nearly an hour later after we’d stuffed ourselves full of dinner and homemade apple pie, which Max had coached me on making and topped with vanilla ice cream, we continued to sit on the balcony talking. We were enjoying the cool evening breeze and talking about nothing in particular.
“So anyway, Alex thinks it’s time for us to look into buying a house.” announced Isabel.
“Really?” I asked.
She nodded, “Yeah, he’s been working with the firm long enough now to accumulate enough money for a nice home. Plus, if all goes right, he should be taking the bar exam next year and once he passes that, the firm will make him an official member.”
“Wow! He’s really going to do it then, huh?” said Max.
“Of course! The senior partners have already been telling him that he’s gonna ace it since he’s already so good at what he does at the firm. They’re really anxious to take him on as a full fledged lawyer. I’m excited because he’ll be making more money then. Granted, he’s already getting a really good amount now, but when he passes the bar, his worth is going through the roof.”
I rolled my eyes, “And the truth comes out.”
Isabel frowned, “What do you mean?”
I shrugged, “You’ve been waiting for this all along haven’t you? For my brother to start raking in the big bucks so you can live the lifestyle you were once a part of.”
Isabel gave me a look that said she was clearly offended, “Liz! You know that’s not it! I want him to be able to support us without having to constantly be under his daddy’s shadow anymore! Once he starts making more money, then we can buy a house without having to ask your father for a loan or to cosign anything. We can also start thinking about having our own family.”
My eyes went wide at that, “You guys want a family?”
Isabel nodded, “We’ve been talking about that for a while now. I wanted to start when he’d graduated from the university and started doing part time with the firm, but Alex wanted to wait until he was closer to taking the bar and getting out from under his father’s wing.”
I couldn’t help but smile at that. I’d always known Alex was incredibly self sufficient and independent, but I’d never known just how determined he was to cut the umbilical cord just like I was. So far Alex and I were the only ones really trying to stand on our own, I was secretly hoping Serena would be that way when she got older too.
“That’s why he wants to get a house then?” asked Max. “So that you guys can start on that family.”
Isabel grinned, “Yes. We want to be settled into a nice four or five bedroom house before we start adding to it.”
She and Max shared a laugh at that as I looked between the two of them. When Max saw my confused look he explained, “Tony, one of the guys who used to hang out with us was married with four kids. We knew him because his brother was one of the models we worked with. Anyway, one time he’d come out with us and gotten drunk because he’d found out his wife was pregnant with their fifth. He was upset because they lived in a four bedroom house with his mother-in-law and there were already two kids in each bedroom.”
Isabel nodded, “Yeah, no room for another kid. So, he spent the night grumbling about how he’d invested so much into that house which they’d moved into when they were on kid number two and his mother-in-law wasn’t living with them then. He declared that there was no way he was going to move out of it. That’s when someone suggested he just add more rooms to the house and he’d replied yeah right so was he supposed to just keeping adding another room every time she got pregnant again.”
My jaw dropped at that, “Are you saying he was expecting more than five!”
Max chuckled at that, “That’s what we all thought too, but turns out he was too drunk at that point to realize what he was saying. We found out from his brother that his mother-in-law was moving in with one of her sisters and he’d hired a friend of his to build two more bedrooms since he’d managed to buy the empty lot on the south side of his house.”
I whistled, “He really got lucky there, huh?”
Isabel nodded, “Yeah. Marcos said that when his mother-in-law found out they were having another kid, she started looking for another place to move to. She knew they’d need the room.”
I nodded then frowned as something dawned on me, “Wait! Does that mean you and Alex want five kids too!”
Even Max was looking at her with wide eyes until she shook her head, “No! Can you really see me with a small tribe?” She laughed, “I think we’re aiming for just two or three, it’s still up for negotiation. Alex wants a nice round number, but I told him I’d kill him if I had to deal with raising four kids. I think he’s getting the picture.”
Max and I chuckled at that.
“Oh come on Isabel, Alex comes from a family of four kids,” I said.
She scrunched her nose at me, “Yeah, and look how that’s turning out!”
Once more the three of us laughed about my dysfunctional family.
A few moments later, Isabel sighed, “Seriously, though. Your parents have been asking about you.”
I stiffened in my seat, “Oh.”
Isabel nodded, “Yeah. Your mom wanted me to tell you that she misses you and wants you to come back home.” As I frowned, Isabel added, “She was really upset with your father when she found out you’d moved out and no one had told her. She didn’t even know that your father had grounded you for going to the prom with Max.”
Isabel turned to look at Max as she continued, “She wants to meet you, Max. She said she’d like to invite you over to have dinner with the family one day so everyone could get to know you and you could get to know them.”
Max nodded, “I’d like that.”
I shook my head, “I’m not taking Max anywhere near them until I know for sure Dad and Kevin will behave themselves.”
Isabel nodded, “They know that, Liz. Your father backed up your mom’s words. He agreed that he’d be willing to have Max over for dinner to meet the family if you moved back home.”
My frown only deepened, “If I move back home? He won’t let Max meet the family unless I move back home first!” I shook my head again, “No, that doesn’t sound right.”
Max sighed and slid his hand into mine, “Liz, they’re your parents. They just want to take care of you. I know they must be worried and…”
“No, Max! I don’t trust him. Don’t you see that? He won’t let you meet the family until I move back in. I know him, he’s planning something.”
Isabel shook her head, “I don’t think so, Liz. And even if he were, your mother would have his head. She’s still upset with him for running you out in the first place. She’s the one who wants Max to come over for dinner and she said that before your father added the moving back home part.”
I rolled my eyes in response.
“She does want you to come home and she wanted me to be sure to tell you that the wedding to Kyle has been called off. She’s no longer planning it with Mrs. Valenti.”
Max smiled at me when she said that and squeezed my hand.
I still had my doubts, “What did father have to say about that?”
Isabel sighed, “They had words, but it’s like I said. Your mother isn’t listening to a thing your father is saying, she’s upset about losing her oldest daughter without ever having a clue about it.”
I sat back in my chair and folded my arms over my stomach. Max looked at me with hope in his eyes. I didn’t say a word as I stared into the distance. So my mother missed me and had called off that sham of a wedding. Still, it didn’t sound like my father had given up on it yet. I wasn’t too keen on going back into that house if there was still a chance of my father tricking me into once again controlling my life and marrying me off to Kyle.

I felt the bed dip next to me then Max spooned my body against his. As his chest pressed against my back, he slid his arm over my waist and spread his hand over my stomach. Kissing my shoulder, he whispered, “You asleep?”
“Not yet,” I whispered back.
His fingers stroked my stomach as he trailed kisses up my shoulder to my neck, “Are you thinking of going home?”
“No.”
“What about your mother?”
“She’ll live.”
He laid his head against his pillow and sighed, “Liz…”
“I’m not changing my mind, Max. Don’t try to take their side.”
Max propped himself up on one elbow and leaned over to look down at me, “I’m not taking their side Liz. I just think you should give them the benefit of the doubt.”
I turned my head to look at him, “Max, this is my father we are talking about.”
“I know that. That’s why you shouldn’t alienate him.”
I glared at him, “He gave me an ultimatum Max. Didn’t you hear Isabel? He’d allow you to meet the family if I came back home!”
“I think he just wants you there for your mother’s sake.”
I groaned as I rolled onto my back.
“Liz, just talk to them okay? You don’t have to move back right away. Just talk to them and see what’s going on.”
I turned my head to look up into his hazel eyes. He smiled at me and I reached up to caress his cheek. “Why are you doing this?” I asked. “Because you must know if I go back, then we won’t be living together anymore.”
He nodded, “I know that. But they’re your family Liz. They miss you.”
“And you won’t.”
“I’ll miss you like hell.” He leaned down to nuzzle my cheek, “But at least this way we can still see each other when we want to. I’m willing to wait for you Liz. For as long as it takes. I know we’ll be together again and when we are, it’ll be with the blessing of both your family and mine.”
I sighed as I closed my eyes. I knew why Max was pushing this. He wanted things to be okay between me and my family. He didn’t want me to go through the same things he’d gone through with his own father all those years ago. Sometimes it really amazed me that Max had such a gentle soul.
“Liz?” he asked.
“I’ll think about it Max.”
“Okay.” He kissed me then and I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, holding him close to me. He left my lips to bury his face in my neck, hugging me to him. We lay there in silence as I contemplated moving back home again. I was going to think long and hard about this because I still didn’t trust my dad.
Max was just happy that I was at least considering it.

Saturday evening I had taken a shower as soon as I’d gotten home from working the afternoon shift. As I was blow drying my hair, Max knocked then opened the door when I shut off the dryer.
He held out the cordless phone to me, “It’s Serena.”
I blinked at that, but took the phone from him. “Hello?”
“Liz? Hi! It’s Serena.”
“Hi sis, how’s it going?”
“Okay, I guess. I hope you don’t mind my calling. Isabel gave me this number.”
“No, that’s okay.” I replied as I made my way into the bedroom and sat in the middle of the bed. Max had disappeared into the living room again. “So, what’s up?”
“Nothing much. I just wanted to see how you were doing.”
“I’m fine. Busy with school and work as usual.”
“Right. Still having trouble with science?” she asked.
I chuckled, “Not so much any more since the school year is winding down and it doesn’t really matter what grades I make. They won’t go on my transcript, thank goodness.”
“Oh, that’s good. So, are you going to college like you wanted?”
“Yeah. I’m still waiting for some more replies from several colleges I applied to, but I think I’m going to stay close to home.”
“Really? I thought you wanted to go to an East coast school.”
“I did, but things have changed. There are two really good local schools that I’m interested in. They both have excellent business departments.”
“Wow! Well, I’m glad you’re going to be close by. Maybe you could help me when I get to high school.”
I chuckled, “Maybe, but I think Max would probably be better at helping than I am. He’s certainly helped me a lot with my math and science.”
“How is Max by the way?”
“He’s doing great. He’s been helping me plan for college and he’s planning on going back to work for his dad soon. They’ve been talking about it for a while now.”
“Cool. He’s going to take over some day isn’t he?”
“Yep. That’s what he hopes too do.”
“That’s so cool.”
I chuckled, “Yeah.”
She was quiet on the other side for a few moments, so I spoke up. “How are you doing in school?”
“Oh, the usual. I think mom’s seriously thinking of enrolling me in an exemplary school next year because the counselors keep dropping hints that I’m too smart to be at such an ordinary middle school.”
I laughed at that, “You are too smart to be in an ordinary middle school.”
“I know that, but all my friends are there. Well, my best friend is there and I won’t know anyone at that other school.”
“True, but I won’t know anyone at the college I go to either, so we’ll both be in the same boat.”
She giggled at that, “I didn’t think of it that way.” there was a brief moment of silence before I heard her sigh, “I wish you were still here. Then we could both talk to each other about our first day at a new school to each other. You’d be the only one who’d understand since we both wouldn’t know anyone there.”
I closed my eyes at the wistful sound of her voice. “I’m sorry Rena, but you can still call me when you need to. And I’ll clear my schedule so that I can meet you after your first day of school to talk, okay?”
“Okay. Will I see you soon?”
“Sure, we can get together next weekend if you want.”
“I’d like that.” There was another heavy pause before I heard her voice again. “I miss you Liz. I got first place in my reading class last week and I couldn’t wait to tell you about it. I told mom, but she didn’t understand it the way I knew you would. And dad wasn’t around as usual. No one understands me like you do. I know mom tries, but she’s never been that smart like us.”
I swallowed as I felt my throat go dry with those words. Serena was right. Mom had been trying to understand her youngest daughter for years, but had always failed miserably. Alex and I were the smart ones until Serena came along and she’d blown us out of the water.
Since Alex was already gone by the time Serena was old enough to care and he was also a boy, I was the one Serena bonded with. I was the one she came to when she won awards for doing something brilliant. I was the one who understood what it was like to be the strange one in the bunch.
“Oh Rena. Congratulations. I knew you’d get it this year! I’m sorry I wasn’t there this week, but we’ll celebrate when we get together next weekend okay?”
“Okay.”
“Good. I want to see the award too.”
“Okay, I’ll have it with me.”
“Great. And Rena, anytime you need anything, just call this number okay? If I’m not here, Max will tell me and I’ll call you back as soon as I can.”
“Okay, I will. Thanks, Liz.”
“You’re welcome, sis.”
There was some noise in the background before I heard her voice once more, “I’ve got to go, mom says dinner is ready.”
“Okay, call me later this week and we’ll make plans for next weekend.”
“I’ll do that. Bye, Liz. Love you.”
“Bye Rena. Love you too.”
I waited until she’d hung up before I pressed the end button on the phone. Tossing the phone on the bed in front of me, I stared at the wall as my gaze became blurry. I’d heard the sad note in my little sister’s voice and knew she wasn’t faking it. She really did miss me and I didn’t blame her one bit. Mom was the only one who could have been close to her, but she’d obviously been failing lately.
Things must really be bad if she’d gone so far as to get Max’s phone number from Isabel. I couldn’t help but wonder just what was going on in that house when I wasn’t there. Suddenly I was afraid that now that I was gone, our father was going to switch his controlling ways to Serena. Still, even if he didn’t, it terrified me that she was now all alone in that house with the likes of my father, my mother, and Kevin.

When Max came into the bedroom nearly an hour later, I was still sitting in the middle of the bed, hugging my knees to my chest. As soon as he saw the tear tracks on my cheeks, he crawled onto the bed and hugged me to his chest.
“What is it?” he asked.
I sniffled, “I’m sorry Max.”
He pulled away and wiped the tears from my cheeks as he looked into my eyes, “For what?”
“I think I have to go home.”

Part 27
I paced the confines of my room nervously as Serena sat in the chair near the door. She watched as I twisted my hands together a few moments before shaking them out at my sides.
Rolling her eyes she said, “Relax Liz. We’re all just going to eat dinner, that’s all.”
“I know, I know. I just want this to be over with already.” I responded.

The much anticipated dinner meeting had arrived. After my phone call with Serena that night, Max and I had talked and I had decided to move back home. However, I had arranged to go back home at a time when I knew my mother would be there.
I’d walked into the living room, dropped my bags by the couch and stood in front of both my parents as I began to lay down the stipulations of my move back home.
I would continue going to school and work as usual. There would be no mention of me getting together with Kyle or marrying him. I was going to the college of my choice when I graduated. There would be no telling me who I could be friends with or not. Most of all, there would be no arguments about my dating Max.
My mother had agreed to every word I’d said, my father had remained sullen and silent beneath my mother’s glare. That was the way it had remained for most of the week that I’d been back home.
As my father continued to literally ignore me, I got constantly harassed by Kevin. Mom had warned Kevin to stay out of my business, but she couldn’t keep Kevin from choosing the friends he wanted to.
However, Kyle was not allowed to come to our house as long as I lived there. Kevin had thrown a fit about that, saying that if I was allowed to have whoever I wanted over, why couldn’t he. We all knew he was talking about Max.
While Kevin and I continued to exchange bitter words with each other, Serena and I had spent more quality time together. When I wasn’t in school or working, I spent as much time with her as I could.
I had decided not to use the car my father had given to me anymore and relied on Maria and Max to get me where I needed to be. So, Maria picked up Serena and I in the mornings and we dropped her off first before going to our school. In the afternoons, Max would pick up Serena first then they’d come and pick me up since her school let out fifteen minutes before mine did. If I had to work, we dropped Serena off at home then I’d go to Max’s house to spend some time with him before going to work. If I was off, the three of us would hang out somewhere until Serena and I had to be home for dinner.
I knew everyone wanted to meet Max and he wanted to meet them, but I was still wary. So, I kept Max as far from my house as possible. I knew he’d eventually have to go to the dinner mom was planning anyway.
So the dinner had been arranged for Saturday evening. I had already let everyone know that after the dinner, I would be going out with Max and would possibly be staying out late.

I glanced at the alarm clock on my nightstand and frowned, “Geez, could time go any slower?”
Serena laughed, “You just looked at the time about five minutes ago.”
I was about to say something else when we heard the doorbell ring. I grinned, “Max is here!”
Just as Serena opened my bedroom door, we heard our mother’s voice from downstairs. “Liz. Max is here.”
Serena giggled and held the door open for me to walk out before her. As we both made our way downstairs, we could hear Max and my mother talking in the living room.
As I rounded the corner and caught my first sight of Max, I came to a sudden halt which caused Serena to run into me.
“Liz, what…” her voice trailed off as she too caught sight of Max.
The man who was greeting my mother had the same smile, build, and voice as Max, but everything else was different. The man standing there was wearing a crisp, navy blue Armani suit with a black shirt underneath and black loafers. He had a five o’clock shadow that simply accentuated his jaw line and that was even more pronounced by the slicked back short hair that only reached just below his ears.
Needless to say, I was standing there slack jawed at the newly, spiffed up Max I was seeing.
My mother turned towards me and smiled, “Ah, there she is.”
When Max turned towards me, I didn’t miss the sparkle in his eyes as he gave me a full blown smile. I suddenly wondered where those dimples had come from because I was sure I’d never seen them before. Then again, most of the time, Max was giving me that trademark smirk, so it wasn’t any wonder those dimples never appeared. It seemed they only came out when he showed his pearly whites.
“Hi Liz, Serena.” He came over to me and kissed my cheek before he leaned in and hugged Serena. I found myself stifling the giggle at the awed look on my sister’s face.
“Max, I’m so glad you could make it tonight.” my mother cooed.
I resisted the urge to gag at the way my mother’s voice dripped with saccharine sweetness. Serena on the other hand rolled her eyes in disgust.
Max was ever the gentleman. “Thank you for inviting me, Mrs. Parker. I’ve been looking forward to meeting you for a while now.”
“Yes. I have been looking forward to this too. Come, why don’t you have a seat. Dinner should be ready in about fifteen more minutes.”
I sat down on the couch and Max sat next to me.
Serena sat on the other side of Max as my mother asked, “Max, would you like something to drink while you wait?”
“No thank you Mrs. Parker, I’m fine.”
She chuckled, “Please, let’s not be so formal. After all you are practically family. You can call me Nancy or mom if you prefer.”
“Thank you, Nancy.”
She nodded and said, “Well, I’m going to check on dinner. Jeff should be home from work soon. Liz, when Isabel and Alex get here could you let them in?”
I nodded and watched as she disappeared into the kitchen.
When she was gone I snapped my gaze back to Max and spoke in a lowered voice, “Okay, want to tell me what you were thinking?”
He arched an eyebrow, “What do you mean?”
I gave him a once over and he flashed that trademark smirk, “You like?” he asked.
Serena giggled, “Oh, I can guarantee that she more than likes you.”
As Max chuckled, I rolled my eyes, “Rena, we’re talking about the hair cut and the clothes, not him!”
Max pouted, “So you don’t like me then?”
That sent Serena into a fit of laughter and I gave Max a friendly punch in the shoulder.
“Okay, okay.” He said, “I just thought I’d dress to impress.” He shrugged, “It was time to get a haircut anyway.”
“Yeah, but did you have to cut it all off?” I asked. When he gave me a questioning look, I added, “It’s just that I really loved your long hair.”
He winked as I slid my fingers through what was left of his hair, “Don’t worry, it’ll grow back.”

Soon after that, Isabel and Alex showed up. Mom was still in the kitchen, so I let them in and introduced Max to my older brother for the first time ever, while Isabel stood there gawking at Max’s new look.
Needless to say, Alex was highly impressed with Max and his business knowledge. He was even more impressed when he realized Max was the eldest son of Phillip Evans and I’d managed to snag him as a boyfriend.
Mom came out soon and announced that dinner was ready, so we all moved to the dining room while Serena went to tell Kevin to come out to dinner. Kevin came down wearing a scowl on his face and pointedly ignored Max, who’d tried to be nice and said hello. When Kevin said nothing and sat down, Max shrugged it off and sat down next to me. Mom began chastising Kevin for being impolite to our guest when she was certain she’d taught us all better than that.
We had begun passing the dishes around when my father showed up. “Sorry I’m late. I needed to make sure everything was running smoothly enough for Agnes to have an easy closing.”
He walked over to my mother and gave her a kiss on the cheek since that was all she’d let him reach. Then he walked to his seat, passing by Kevin, Isabel, and Alex who was seated to his left. I was seated to dad’s right with Max next to me and Serena next to him on my mother’s left.
My mother looked pointedly at him as he sat down and addressed Alex. “How’s business, son?”
Alex nodded, “It’s great dad. The senior partners are eager for me to take the bar already. They are certain I’m going to do well.”
“Really? You going to stay with the firm then?”
“Yes. They are giving me a really good deal to stay, so unless I get a better one, I’m not going anywhere.”
“I see, well let’s hope it works out then.”
“So, Max, Liz tells me you are interested in business, just like she is?” asked my mom.
Max nodded, “Yes, I took some business courses back in my senior year of high school and did really good. Don’t get me wrong, the courses weren’t that easy, but since I got good grades, I figured I could pursue that.”
“Oh, but you decided to wait before you went to college?” she asked.
I shook my head, “No, mom. Those courses Max took were college courses.”
Alex nodded, “It’s a program that’s been in the schools for a few years now. If seniors have the credits they need to graduate, they can take college level courses and apply them to their degree once they graduate and go to the college that will accept those courses.”
I nodded in agreement, “It’s what I wanted to do this year, but dad wouldn’t let me sign up for the courses.”
“Oh, really?” my mother gave my father another one of her looks.
My father shrugged, “She was marrying Kyle. What was the use of getting college credit if she wasn’t going to use it?”
“Who’s to say she wasn’t going to use it? Kyle is planning on going to college, why would he have stopped her?”
“Since when do women finish college when they get married?”
“Since this is the twenty-first century, Jeff!”
“You didn’t.”
My mother narrowed her eyes, “Yes, and the more you open your mouth, the more I’m beginning to regret it!”
Kevin frowned, “What were you going to do? Major in ‘How to Properly Deal with Phone Company Customers’?”
“Kevin, don’t use that tone of voice with our mother,” chastised Alex.
Kevin went silent and poked at his food.
There was a moment of silence before Alex spoke up again, “Max, what made you decide not to go to college right away?”
Max shrugged, “It’s a long, complicated story. The gist of it is that my father was molding me into an image of him and I just followed blindly. When I realized that he was controlling my life and not allowing me to have my own, I decided to take a break. I wanted to go out and try to live life on my own, without my father’s influence.”
Alex grimaced, “I take it your father didn’t take it very well.”
Max chuckled, “Yeah, he loved the fact that his protégé was rebelling. Needless to say, we didn’t see eye to eye after that.”
“Oh Max, tell me you still talk to your father,” my mother interjected.
He nodded, “It’s better now. We are talking again and he’s come to understand that I just needed to grow up on my own without him holding my hand every step of the way.”
“So, are you going to take over the business or are you going to pursue something else?” asked Alex.
“My dad and I are still negotiating. I think I’m going to go back to work with him soon. So long as we are on the same page, I think I can do it.”
“Oh, so you won’t be going to college?” asked my mother.
“No, I don’t really need it anymore. I had just taken those courses back in high school to see what they were like, but I know my father’s company. I grew up there after all and my father spent as much time as possible grooming me to take over. Besides, when I go back to work with him, I’ll be working along side him for a while until he thinks I can do it all without him being there.”
“Well, that sounds like a plan.” my mother chuckled.
Isabel nodded, “Max has always been smart when it comes to business. I remember when we used to model together and we’d go out with our group of friends. Well, when they found out about Max’s ability to do business, they started going to him for advice especially on things like investments and consolidation. He was always good at those things.”
Alex chuckled, “Is that so?” At Isabel’s nod, he added, “Well, then, I guess we should invite him over for dinner one night and let him see the paperwork on those investments we want to make. Think you’d be able to give us some advice, Max?”
“Sure, just let me know when you want to get together and I’ll be glad to look it over for you.”
“Is that what you are going to do too Liz?” asked my mom.
I shook my head, “I’m not going to deal with investments. I’m thinking more along the lines of keeping accurate counts whether it be financial or material. Max’s strength is with long term things, while mine is with short term.”
“Oh, I didn’t realize there were different categories for business.”
Alex, Max, and I all nodded and I said, “Yeah, nowadays business courses tend to be much more specific than they once were.”
“Well, whatever you do, I know you will do well, just like Alex did. Just like I know Serena will do someday,” replied my mother as she turned to look at Serena while giving her arm an affectionate squeeze.
Serena just blushed and continued eating silently.
Max chuckled, “Yeah, Rena will be great at whatever she does since she keeps Liz and I on our toes.”
The rest of us all added our verbal agreement, except Kevin and my father. It wasn’t hard to see that Kevin wished he was somewhere else, since he kept scowling at his plate and pushing the food around with his fork. My father pretended to be too interested in shoveling food into his mouth to participate in the conversation.
We continued to eat dinner and share stories with each other. Mom and Alex were extremely curious about Max and wanted to know everything about him. We talked about his parents, his younger brother Michael who was going to be a chef, and what Max’s childhood had been like. Of course, Mom and Alex began to tell Max all about my childhood and even Serena began to contribute her own stories about growing up with me.
As we shared laughter over childhood stories, Mom had produced chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream for dessert. Kevin excused himself saying he didn’t want dessert. Mom tried to get him to finish his dinner, but he continued to ignore everyone at the table and left in a huff. The rest of us finished our dessert and moved into the living room to continue talking.
My father excused himself once we’d gone to the living room saying he needed to get some paperwork done before it got too late. I knew Mom was upset when he disappeared into his study because she wore a pinched expression on her face for a few moments before she came back to talking with the rest of us.
An hour later, Alex and Isabel took their leave with Alex promising to call Max so that they could discuss a time for Max to go over and help them with their investments. My mother saw them out while Max and I lounged on the couch with Serena who was watching television at that point.
I sat next to Max giggling as he and Serena debated whether or not the cartoon show she was watching was really as good as the cartoons back in the day. After a while, Serena finally decided to call it a night and left us alone. I asked Max if he was ready to leave and went to tell my mother that we were going out.
Leaving Max in the living room, I made my way down the hall towards the kitchen where I figured my mom would be cleaning up. As I passed the study, I could hear her voice and my father’s.
“You didn’t even give him a chance, Jeff!”
“Oh please! Don’t you see it Nancy! He’s suckering every one of you in! Does he really think that by cutting his hair and dressing all fancy that we are going to believe he’s good for Liz?”
“What has he done that’s so wrong? Even Alex thinks Max has a good head on his shoulders! And Isabel has known him longer than all of us…”
My father scoffed, “Isabel? She was a model with him! A model Nancy! What exactly is so smart and respectable about that?”
“That’s not the point. Jeff!”
“No, the point is that I don’t trust him as far as I can throw him! He’s up to something. I know he is. He probably made up all of that about him and his father mending their relationship too. After all, he’s still living in that one bedroom apartment instead of at the house his parents own.”
“God Jeff, didn’t you hear what he said! He needed to go out on his own! How was he going to know what it is like to depend on himself if he continued to live under his father’s roof?”
“It was a line…”
I didn’t want to hear anymore. Angry that my father refused to see that Max was a good person, yet continued to think Kyle could do no wrong, I pushed open the door and glared at him. “Mom, I came to tell you that Max and I are going out now.”
My mother gave my father another one of her glacial stares before turning to me. She smiled as she walked out of the room with me, “Come on, let me see the two of you out.”
She walked Max and I to the door and gave us both hugs. “Thank you for coming to dinner Max. You know you are welcome here anytime.”
Max nodded, “Thank you, Nancy. Dinner was wonderful by the way.”
My mother chuckled, “Thank you, but it’s probably no where near as good as yours or your brothers. At least that’s what I get from what Liz has said about your cooking.”
Max blushed, “Still, nothing beats a home cooked meal, especially when it’s made by a mother.”
I grinned, “Okay Max, you can stop with the buttering her up, she likes you already.”
With a laugh, my mother agreed, “She’s right. I do like you. Now go on, enjoy the rest of the night together. I’ll see you tomorrow, Liz.”
I slid my hand into Max’s as my mother winked at me and waved good bye to us. Together, we walked to Max’s car and went to his place.

As we sat curled up together on his couch, we talked about dinner.
“Your mother was nice.”
I chuckled, “Yeah, well, she seemed a little out there at first, but when we sat down to dinner, she seemed more herself.”
“What do you mean ‘out there’?”
“She was trying too hard to be nice, it almost seemed fake. Even Rena thought so.”
“Maybe she was nervous?”
I laughed, “I don’t think so. I think she was trying to overcompensate for the way my dad was going to behave when he got there.”
Max sighed, “Yeah, your dad doesn’t like me does he?”
I frowned as I remembered the argument I’d walked in on earlier. “He’s not even giving you that chance Max. Mom thinks it’s unfair that he’s judging you by that one thing you did and nothing else. Dad’s convinced you are just feeding us all the lines we want to hear.”
His eyes narrowed, “Isn’t that what Kyle has been doing?”
“Yeah, but for some reason dad believes Kyle is for real and you are the one faking it.”
I sighed and leaned back against the couch, “I don’t understand why dad can’t see the truth. I don’t understand why he won’t see that I am something more than just a mail order bride.”
“You’re not a mail order bride, Liz.”
“I know, but sometimes he just makes me feel like I’m this thing to be used, you know. To be used for some financial or social gain.”
Max stared at me for a moment before he wrapped his arms around me and hugged me tight. “You are so much more than that Liz. You know it. You’re smart and independent. And you speak your mind.” He pulled away and cupped my face in his hands, “I love the way you care about others Liz. The way you defend anyone you care about. Maria, Serena, me.” His thumb caressed my cheek as he added in a low voice, “I love you Liz. You are so beautiful to me. Inside and out.”
I could feel the tears welling up as Max finished his speech. All I could think was that I thought those very same things about him. He was beautiful to me. Inside and out.
Leaning in, I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and kissed him. I let the kiss show him just how much he meant to me. It was long and slow until both of us needed air. Then I slowly pulled away and placed my forehead against his.
“I love you too, Max.” I whispered.
He smiled at that and we sat there for a few moments in silence, looking into each others eyes.
“Come here Liz,” he said a few moments later, as he got up and offered me his hand.
I slid my hand into his and let him lead me into the bedroom.
Max stopped near the side of the bed and turned to me. As his lips brushed against mine, he said, “Let me show you just how beautiful you are to me.”
I nodded as his hands began to undress me. When I tried to help him, he shook his head, “Let me.”
I let my hands fall to my sides and allowed Max to finish undressing me. Once he was done, he stepped back and began to take off his own clothes. I watched as more of his skin was exposed to my gaze. When he was done, he stood there for a few moments allowing me to drink my fill of him.
Once I looked into his eyes, he moved back to me and wrapped his arms around me. I moaned as he kissed me again and our bodies pressed against each others. I slid my hands up his chest and curled them around his shoulders into his short hair. Max’s lips left mine to kiss and nibble his way down my neck and shoulders.
He tilted me back as his mouth wandered farther down to my breasts. I closed my eyes in bliss as he began to suckle and swirl his tongue around my areole. As my knees weakened, he held me up with his arms wrapped around my body. Soon, his mouth wandered over to the other breast and pleasured it the way he had the first.
As I felt the liquid pool between my legs, I groaned and tried to press myself closer to him. Max shifted his weight and held me so I wouldn’t fall as he moved down my stomach. He slid a hand between my legs to help alleviate some of the ache there. I opened my eyes just as his fingers slid inside of me and gasped as I saw us in the mirrored wall.
Max was kneeling now and all I saw of him was his back as he continued to pleasure me with his fingers. I slid one hand into his hair as he placed kisses and nibbles along my stomach and hips. My other hand wandered over his shoulders and down his back as my eyes followed its path in the mirror.
It was a heady feeling to watch Max pleasuring me like that. To see the muscles moving in his back with every movement he made. I knew I was close when I felt the trembling in my legs begin.
“Max…” I begged.
He stopped what he was doing and rose to his feet. Pulling me onto the bed, he positioned me on my knees facing the mirrored wall and knelt behind me. He leaned over me and kissed my shoulder before meeting my eyes in the mirror. As his hands moved from my hips up to cup my breasts he said, “Watch beautiful. Watch me make love to you.”
Then he leaned in and sucked my earlobe into his mouth. I moaned as his hands kneaded my breasts and his thumb nails grazed my nipples. My eyes started to flutter closed in pleasure, but he stopped again and waited until I opened them. He gave me a smile before he went back to nibbling on my neck and fondling my breasts.
As his hands shaped my body from my shoulders down to my hips, I resisted the urge to close my eyes again. His mouth and tongue wreaked havoc on my shoulders, neck, ears, and back. Soon, his hand wandered down between my legs and began to caress my clit.
I leaned back against him and opened my legs wider to give him better access, but I never took my eyes away from watching us in the mirror. As he slid his free hand back up to cup my breast, he slid into me from behind. I cried out as he filled me and began thrusting slowly in time to the way his fingers were caressing my clit and breast. It was the most erotic thing I had ever seen in my life, watching him doing that to me. And I was feeling everything I knew he wanted me to feel.
Unable to take his slow thrusts any longer, I began to push my hips back against him. He slid his hands to my hips to hold me in place and began to pick up the pace. I spread my legs wider, shifted slightly, and wrapped my fingers around his wrists as I continued to watch him in the mirror. With the angle we were at now, I could see him sliding in and out of me.
I heard him moan and looked up at him in the mirror to see that he was watching as he buried himself inside of me again and again. “God, beautiful,” he groaned.
I nodded, “Yes, Max.” I tightened my hold on his wrists, “Harder, baby, please.”
He leaned closer to my back and thrust harder just the way I liked it. I threw my head back against his chest and continued to watch us in the mirror. He wrapped his arms around me to hold me close as he pounded into me. With each thrust, my breasts bounced and my body jerked with his.
Just when I thought I couldn’t take anymore, Max slid out of me and moved to kneel in front of me. Pulling me into his arms, he lifted my left leg and wrapped it around his hip. As his lips met mine, he slid back inside of me. I moaned into his mouth then leaned back as he began thrusting hard again.
I tightened my leg around his hip and wrapped my arms around his shoulders as he held me close with one arm. He held my thigh high on his hip with his other hand. As he dipped his head to kiss and nibble on my collarbone and neck, I looked back into the mirror and nearly lost it when I saw us now. He was gorgeous with his dark hair against my chest and the muscles in his back straining to hold me to him. Then there were the muscles in his ass, clenching every time he thrust into me.
That was more than I could take. As I closed my eyes to allow myself to fall over the edge, Max turned us around again and pressed me against the wall. He lifted my legs and I wrapped them tight around his hips as he began pounding into me again.
I leaned my head back against the mirror and began to shout, “Yes! Yes! Max, I’m so close, baby!”
He panted against my neck, “Let go, beautiful. Let go for me.”
I screamed as I finally reached my peak and went tumbling over. Max groaned as he felt me come and continued to thrust into me. Two thrusts later, he was shouting my name as he joined me in release. I held him close until he finally went limp and pressed me into the wall. We clung to each other breathing hard.
A few moments later I whispered, “You are beautiful to me too, Max. Inside and out.”

Part 28
Over the next several weeks before graduation, things seemed to have calmed down for all of us. Despite the fact that we all knew that Kevin hated Max’s guts and my father continued to ignore Max, he still came over to my house often to spend time with me.
My mother was always nice to him and made sure Kevin and my father didn’t give us any grief. Usually, Max hung out with me in my room, but there were times when we’d be with Rena in her room or in the living room with Rena and mom. My father was rarely home when Max was there and Kevin just sulked in his room avoiding all of us.
Alex had called Max during the first week after he’d met him and they arranged to get together on a Sunday for brunch with Isabel and I included.
I had spent the night with Max that Saturday since he’d picked me up from working late at the store. We’d stayed up watching late night movies and binging on junk food before burning off a lot of those empty calories on his living room floor and then in his bed.
We’d lain in bed with the curtains open to watch the sunrise before catching a few hours sleep. When we woke up, we took a quick shower together doing our very best to keep our hands off of each other in order to make it to Alex and Isabel’s in time for brunch.
After the four of us had enjoyed a wonderful meal made by Isabel, Alex and Max had retreated to Alex’s study to discuss the investments while Isabel and I cleaned up the leftovers. Isabel and I had spent a couple of hours afterwards sitting on her bed trading stories about Max and Alex.
We were still giggling like a pair of adolescents when the guys came out of the study. When Alex asked what was so funny, Isabel and I just looked at each other and giggled some more. My poor older brother continued to look clueless as Max rolled his eyes and scooped me up from the bed and told Isabel she was a bad influence on me.
As we continued to laugh about it, Max and I said our goodbyes and left with Alex still asking Isabel what he’d missed. Max and I spent the rest of the day enjoying the sunshine on the back of his bike out in the country. He found us a nice spot with plenty of shade and a thick patch of lush grass to recline on.
As we both lay on our backs in the grass, looking up at the sky through the leaves above us, we talked about my plans after graduation. I had already gotten an acceptance letter from several good business colleges out of state, but I was still waiting for word from the one in the city.
Max asked me if I’d go to Yale since that had been my plan before and it was one of the colleges that had accepted me with a full scholarship. I told him no, Yale may have been a plan, but I’d never really wanted to go there. The only reason I had chosen that is because I had thought it would get me the farthest away from everything that had plagued me here.
I knew Yale had only been an escape route for me, a way out of the miserable life I was leading. Since I had met Max, my life had changed. Now, I didn’t feel like I was suffocating, like I needed to find a way out of the hole I’d been placed in. I’d grown closer to my mother, my sister, and older brother. I had a terrific sister-in-law that I looked up to and I had a best friend who supported me in whatever I chose to do. I loved them all for being there and not judging me or trying to make me into someone I wasn’t.
Most of all I loved Max for opening my eyes and showing me that I could be strong for myself. That I could make my own decisions and how to stick with them despite the possibility that someone else would be there to try to drag me down. Max taught me that I could make decisions without worrying if anyone else was going to be hurt by them, that first and foremost, it was about making myself happy.
I knew he was just asking about Yale to make sure I understood that he’d back me up no matter what I decided. Even if I chose to go to college somewhere far away from him, he’d respect my decision and continue to help me any way he could. He’d miss me, but he wanted me to be happy first.
The truth was, Max wasn’t the reason why I wanted to go to school close to home. He was a reason, but not the main one. I had spent the last few months thinking about all of my options and realized I’d never wanted to go so far away. Now that things were better between me and my family, I wanted to be close to them to keep mending the bridges we’d almost destroyed.
I’d come to realize that being among those who made me happy, those who enjoyed being with me the way I already was, was what made me thrive. That was what made me want to stay. Max was right about one thing, I had a big heart. The last thing I wanted to do was go off and leave those I’d come to care about immensely.

The following weekend, one of Alex’s investments paid off quicker than he and Max had both estimated, so Alex took us out to an expensive dinner and we’d celebrated the beginning of what we all hoped would be a successful venture for Alex and Isabel. Alex had been so excited that he’d invited the whole family and had even included Maria and Michael in the mix.
It was the first time Michael got to meet my family with the exception of my dad whom he’d met before. Kevin as usual had declined to go out with everyone since he’d found out Max was going to be there. It had come as a shock to my family who thought Kevin never turned down a free meal and an expensive one at that. Well, apparently even an expensive dinner wasn’t enough to get Kevin in the same room with Max.
My father was only there long enough to eat a bit of his dinner and congratulate Alex on his success before he seemed to be called away on business. Needless to say, we didn’t let the absence of my father and younger brother deter us from having a great time. We took our time eating dinner and dessert, spending hours talking and laughing among the eight of us.

For my entire life I’d been surrounded and dogged by clichés. Just two weeks before graduation, when I’d thought I’d finally escaped them, I began to find out that all good things must come to an end. In retrospect, we should have seen it coming, but we’d all begun to get comfortable with the way things had been going.
It all began when my father asked me to come into his office one day. The moment he did, my hackles went up. I knew something was up, but I was more than confident that I could handle it.
I walked into my father’s office and stood between the two chairs facing his desk. “What’s up?” I asked.
My father looked up from his desk and motioned to one of the chairs, “Have a seat, Liz.”
As he got up to go close the door, I answered, “I’d rather stand.”
He shut the door and walked back to his desk with a shrug, “Have it your way, then.”
I waited until he returned to his seat behind the desk. He sat back in his chair and looked up at me with a sigh. “I think there’s something you should know.”
Inwardly I braced for it, outwardly I remained calm as I raised an inquisitive eyebrow, “Oh? Like what?”
My father reached into one of his drawers and pulled out a file folder, setting it on his desk between us.
I didn’t say a word, just continued to give him my questioning look, waiting for him to say his piece.
He opened the folder and pointed to the first piece of paper at the top. “How much do you know about what Max did when he was a model?” he asked.
I gave a nonchalant shrug, “I know what Max and Isabel told me about.”
“Really? Well, did Max ever mention to you what he was doing when he wasn’t modeling?”
I sighed, “Dad, where exactly is this going?”
He frowned, “I’ve recently found out some things that I don’t think even his father may know about. Or, if he does, he probably used his money and influence to cover it up.”
I hated to admit, that my interest was definitely peaked as I said, “What things?”
My father rummaged through the papers in the file as he began to tell me, “He was a model, Liz. A male model. And as such, he was in a business that is constantly surrounded by temptations that can seriously damage a good reputation.”
I wanted to scream at his vagueness. My father still hadn’t produced anything damaging, he was simply trying to scare me. I refused to rise to the bait. “Father, just spit it out already, what did you find out about Max?”
I could see the ire rising in my father’s eyes as he realized I wasn’t falling for his spiel. He pressed his lips together in a firm line before he finally said, “He was involved with drugs, Liz. He was a male model who lived that sort of lifestyle. He constantly went to parties that were nothing but orgies full of beautiful people who sell their bodies for money, surrounded by drugs and alcohol.”
At my incredulous look, he added, “He was one of those people, Liz!”
I wanted to laugh. I could see he truly believed what he’d just said. He truly believed that Max had sold his body for money, drugs, and alcohol. I knew the truth, but my father didn’t know that.
I continued to look straight at him as I asked, “How do you know this?”
He lifted up a picture and held it out to me as he said, “This is from a file from the city’s local newspaper. The picture was never published because someone paid a lot of money to keep it under wraps.”
I nodded as I looked at the picture that showed Max sitting on a couch in what looked like a club. His head was tilted at an angle to allow the half naked woman next to him to talk in his ear. Her hand rested just inside his thigh, but even I could see Max’s body language said he wasn’t interested.
However, it wasn’t Max and the woman he was talking to that would have caused a scandal. It was the couple in the background, on what appeared to be an elevated table. The woman was leaning back with the guy between her legs. What could be seen of her was the look on her face that screamed she was in the throes of ecstasy and the way the sleeves of her dress were down to her elbows. The guys pants hung loosely around his waist, indicating that they had to be open in the front.
I grinned as I recognized the woman’s face. She was a prized fashion model who was still notoriously famous for enjoying very public sex in very public places. At least those had always been the rumors since there still was no evidence that she did that. No wonder my father had said someone paid money to keep it under wraps.
I looked up at my father and said, “Max told me about this party. It was a birthday party for one of the company’s newest sensations. The woman he’s sitting with was a model he’d worked with often. She had just gotten married two weeks before this party. You can see her ring on her hand. He told me how she’d spent most of the night at his side because she knew he was safe and wouldn’t hit on her. Her husband was a model too, but he was off on a job and the company had insisted that she go, just like they’d made Max go.”
My father arched an eyebrow, “She doesn’t look like she’s missing her husband there.”
I chuckled, “Yeah, Max told me that she had a bad habit of needing lots of physical comfort. She never meant it to be taken as a come on, but it was often mistaken as just that. Once they’d gotten to know each other, Max knew better than to interpret her touches as flirting.”
Knowing he couldn’t win with that one, he flung another picture at me. I looked at it a few moments and said, “That’s the merger party. His modeling agency had just merged with a smaller successful agency and they expected a big payoff. Isabel was at this one too. Since it was a party thrown by the agency, it was very private. Meaning, if there were drugs and too much alcohol imbibed, the agency cleaned it up. The agency themselves didn’t provide any drugs, just the alcohol, but they can’t exactly stop people from doing what they want with their own lives. They can threaten careers and the like, but in the end a person’s going to do what they want.”
“Did they threaten him for doing drugs.”
“He wasn’t doing drugs.”
“He’s holding that thing Liz!”
“It’s called a bong. And yes, he’s holding it and clearly posing for this picture. But he wasn’t using it, Max said one of the models had managed to sneak in a whole bunch of these cheap plastic ones as party favors.”
As my father began to rummage through the papers again, I sighed, “Look dad, Max has told me plenty of stories of parties he used to go to where there were plenty of drugs and people getting high or drunk. He’s even told me that he tried drugs as an experiment, but he’s never made them a habit. And he has gotten drunk on occasion, but he’s never gotten behind the wheel of a car or endangered his life or anyone else’s. And yes, Max has had sex with plenty of women, but again, he’s always been careful. I know Max isn’t perfect and he knows he’s not perfect either. He’s never claimed to be. He knows he’s made mistakes and he’s learned from them. There isn’t anything that you can find that Max hasn’t told me about.”
My father’s head snapped up as he growled, “The fact that there are photos of him at these places is enough to incriminate him, Liz!”
I rolled my eyes, “He’s never been accused of anything!”
“Someone could take these photos and blow them out of proportion! It doesn’t take much for the public to believe anything!”
My eyes narrowed, “What, like you are doing now?” At his gape I hissed, “If you take those pictures and try to use them against him, so help me dad, I will make you regret it!”
“Don’t you get it, Liz! If you stay with him and one of these things gets out, it could ruin your reputation!”
“And that’s a problem why?”
“It’ll ruin your chances with getting into Yale. It’ll make them force you out of their school!”
“Since when did you care about my getting into Yale? You never even wanted me to go to college in the first place!”
“What is going on in here?” Both our heads snapped to the door where my mother had just walked in wearing a frown on her face.
I growled, “He’s trying to threaten me into leaving Max.”
“Jeff!” my mother began, but was quickly cut off by my father.
“Look at these pictures Nancy! Look at the things he was involved with when he was a model!” he threw the pictures across the desk.
As my mother picked them up, I said, “Max told me all about them. He’s never kept secrets from me. I know there are certain things that happen at parties backed by money from the rich and famous! I’m not stupid, but I trust Max! He told me what he did!”
My mother frowned at the pictures before she looked up at my father, “Jeff, you’d have to be a special kind of stupid not to know just what could possibly go on at these kind of parties. Why do you think Alex asked Isabel to stop modeling when they had decided to get married? And no, it wasn’t because Alex was jealous, he knew Isabel loved him from the moment they met. He asked her to stop because he was worried that something would happen to her and he wouldn’t be around to help her.”
As my father sat there stewing, I turned a stunned look on my mother. Even I had always believed Alex had asked Isabel to stop because he didn’t want her surrounded by all those male models. Who knew my brother had only been looking out for Isabel’s best interests. Suddenly, my respect for my older brother had just doubled.
My mother set the pictures down on the desk and her eyes flicked over to the file folder that contained the other documents on Max. She looked up at my father, her frown only deepening. “Where did you get all of this?” she asked.
My own gaze flew to my father’s face since that had been a question that had been floating around in my head too.
He sighed, “What does it matter? The point is that it exists and if these things get out, it’ll ruin Liz’s chances at going to Yale!”
My mother narrowed her eyes as I huffed, “For your information, I’m not going to Yale! I’m trying to get into a college much closer to home.”
My father stood gaping at me as my mother growled, “Jeff, if those things make it to the public, I’m coming for your hide!”
“What!” my father roared. “Are you telling me that after all of this you are not even going to Yale! And all because of that guy!”
“This has nothing to do with Max!” I yelled back.
“This has everything to do with him! You wouldn’t stop going on and on about how you wanted to go off to college and then he comes into the picture and here you are tossing all of it out the window without a second glance! Why couldn’t you have done that for Kyle! At least he doesn’t have a past that would ruin your reputation!”
“Jeffery Alan Parker! How dare you bring that up! When are you ever going to realize that these are Liz’s decisions to make on her own! You can’t keep controlling her! She’s not a child! Stop treating her like one!” my mother shouted.
As I stood there glaring daggers at my father, trying to count backwards and calm myself down, they continued to yell at each other. I could hear my father accusing Max of convincing me not to go off to Yale, of wrapping me around his little finger. He made it sound like it was all of Max’s fault for my changing completely into someone he didn’t recognize, someone he didn’t want to recognize.
My mother continued to tell him to mind his own business and let me live my life the way I wanted to. She told him to stop trying to find a way to make me leave Max and to stop trying to make Kyle look like a saint. She told him to stop trying to make Max into the bad guy because all he seemed to succeed in doing was making himself look bad.
When my father slammed his fist on the desk and roared that he was not going to stand by and watch as that guy’s past ruined his daughter’s reputation and once more issued the order forbidding me to ever see Max again, I snapped.
“You can’t forbid me not to see him! Mom is right! You don’t control me anymore! These are my decisions to make and I’m going to make them! I love Max! I love him! And if you can’t open your eyes and see what a conniving, manipulative sorry excuse for a human being Kyle is, then you and I have nothing else to say to each other!”
“How dare you accuse him of being that! He’s only looking out for your best interests! If it hadn’t been for him and Kevin, none of us would have known what skeletons were hidden in Max’s past!”
The moment those words left my father’s lips, his eyes went wide and silence descended in the room. Time seemed to stand still for long moments as my mother and I glared at my father.
Slowly, my mother folded her arms over her chest as I whispered, “I knew it. I knew you couldn’t have gathered this all by yourself.”
My father looked glumly at the papers as he grunted, “Someone had to find out the truth.”
I took a step in my father’s direction, but my mother halted me with her words, “Liz. Why don’t you go visit Max right now? Tell him what your father was up to with Kevin and Kyle. The keys to my car are in the side pocket of my purse on my dresser. Take it for as long as you need it.”
I turned to look at her, but she wasn’t looking at me. Her narrowed eyes were trained on my father who was now sitting in his chair looking like a child who was about to receive the grounding of his life.
I swallowed and slowly nodded before backing out of the room and closing the door behind me. I didn’t waste any time running to my parents room and snatching the keys from my mother’s purse.
As I exited their room and headed for the kitchen, all I could hear was my mother’s voice as she laid into my father. The strange thing was, she wasn’t yelling at all. Her voice was loud enough to be heard outside of the room, but it sounded way too calm, too controlled. It was the first time I was ever seriously afraid of my mother.

Part 29

The last several days before graduation found me spending more and more time at Max’s place. After my father pulled his latest stunt, I had gone over to Max’s and did exactly what my mother had told me to do. I had replayed the entire episode between my father, my mother, and I. I had told him that all of the information had been gathered by Kyle and Kevin and given to my father to use against Max.
After I’d explained everything to him, Max had agreed that Kyle and Kevin were up to no good and that they couldn’t be trusted. He agreed with me when I said I thought they were probably still going to try something else since this had failed to work.
But when I’d tried to include my father in with them, Max still insisted that he was just being a father. Max believed my father was still trying to watch out for me since I was his daughter. He couldn’t believe that my father didn’t care about me and only saw me as a thing to be used. While I thought it was really sweet that Max wanted to believe my father could be redeemed, I knew better.
I told Max that I didn’t think he would still be defending my father if he’d been there. If he’d seen the way my father had been determined to undermine him in my eyes. It was the only thing we didn’t agree on. And for a while there, all the disagreement had succeeded in doing was making me more agitated.
The moment I realized we’d started to shout at each other, I’d taken a step back and told him I didn’t want to fight about my father. If we let that come between us, then my father would have won. It was at that point that we both decided to agree to disagree.
I knew Max didn’t want me to lose my father, I knew what it meant to him because of what he’d gone through with his own. For that, I was willing to let go of my anger at my father and concentrate on other things that were more important. Things like graduating, getting ready to go to college, my family, and Max.
While I spent more time at Max’s, I still continued to live at home. The day of the confrontation with my father, I had spent the night at Max’s but had returned home the next day. It hadn’t been surprising to walk into a cold, silent house.
I had found out that mom didn’t just have words with my father, she’d also had words with Kevin and had grounded him for a month. When my father had tried to argue that he was the one who made the rules, my mother had told him that since he was so close to his son, he could share his room with him because he wasn’t allowed into hers.
She had then taken everything out of Kevin’s room that would have violated his grounding like his video games, his stereo, phone, and television. She took his keys and forbade him from using his car. In essence, she grounded him as harshly as my father had grounded me the last time. Then she had tossed my father’s clothes and any necessities he’d needed into Kevin’s room.
If Kevin wasn’t in school, he was in his room, sulking. Mom had threatened hell if he didn’t come straight home from school and obeyed her rules of his being grounded. Not even dad could get him out of it.
While Kevin was banished to his room, my father avoided the house as much as he could. He rarely ever came home anymore, spending most of his time at the restaurant. Since mom had banished him from their bedroom, he was forced to bunk with Kevin. Still, he was often found stretched out on the couch when it got too uncomfortable to share with Kevin.
Serena was confused about why mom and dad weren’t on speaking terms anymore, even after mom had tried to explain it to her. She didn’t seem that upset with it since both of my parents didn’t treat her any differently than they had before. In her eyes, that was the only difference since Kevin had always been a jerk to her, me, and my mother. Plus, she also knew that my father and I had not been on the best of terms for months now.
Despite the changes, mom, Serena, and I continued to live our lives the way we always had. Maria continued to take Serena and I to school and Max continued to pick us up. I continued to cherish the time I had to spend with my family, my best friend, and my boyfriend.

The graduation ceremony was going to take place on a Saturday afternoon and my last day of school was that Tuesday. So, I was pleasantly surprised on Wednesday when the doorbell rang and I answered it to find a delivery man standing there with a bouquet of roses for me.
I took the roses to my room and read the note, “Liz, see if you can borrow your mother’s car and meet me at my place at seven. I have a surprise planned for you for graduation. Love, Max.”
I smiled as I went to find a vase to put the roses in wondering what the surprise was that Max would have waiting for me. In the kitchen, I found a vase in one of the cabinets under the sink and filled it with water and the roses. I took the roses to my room and set them on my dresser, arranging them to my satisfaction. Standing back, I grinned trying to contain my excitement.
Once I’d arranged the roses on my dresser, I made my way to my mother’s room and knocked on the door. When I heard her say that it was open, I walked in.
My mother was sitting at her desk reading some papers, but she looked up and smiled at me. “Hi, honey, thought you were at work today?”
I shook my head as I went to sit on the edge of her bed, “Nope. I asked off until Monday for graduation.”
She nodded, “Oh, well that’s good. That gives you time to relax and enjoy it.” At my nod she asked, “So, how’s the college search going?”
“Good. I think I’m close to deciding now. I’ve narrowed it down to two choices, I’ll make my decision by next week, early enough to beat the deadlines.”
“That’s great honey.” She put down the papers she’d still been holding and turned her full attention on me. “So, what’s the real reason you came in here?”
I grinned, “What? Can’t I just come say hi to my mom?”
She laughed, “Yes, of course you can, but you already did that earlier today. That’s why I’d thought you’d gone to work. So? What can I do for you, baby?”
I looked at her sheepishly as I asked, “Would you let me borrow your car this evening?”
She nodded, “Of course. Can I ask why?”
“Max just sent me a bouquet of roses with a note asking me to ask you if I could borrow your car. He wants me to meet him at seven at his place because he’s got a surprise for me.”
“A surprise! Really?” She chuckled, “He’s such a sweet man!”
As I blushed, she got up and moved to sit next to me. She gave me a hug as she said, “Of course you can borrow my car, on one condition.”
I looked up at her, “Okay?”
She grinned, “When you get home you have to tell me all about this surprise.”
I laughed at that. “It’s a deal.”

I stepped out of my mother’s car and straightened out my dress before leaning over to check myself in the mirror. I had no idea what Max’s surprise entailed, so I hoped I was dressed for the occasion. I had chosen to wear something that would fit in with a casual or a Sunday best occasion.
Once I was ready, I made my way to Max’s apartment. I walked up to the door and knocked before waiting for him to answer. It was a few minutes before the door finally opened to reveal Max. I grinned up at him, the shocked look on his face not registering since I was too excited to see his surprise.
“Liz?” he asked, “What are you doing here beautiful?”
It was then that the look on his face registered. But before I had a chance to say anything, I heard another voice, “Max?” I turned to see a woman exiting Max’s bedroom buttoning up a shirt which looked suspiciously like one of Max’s.
As I stood there staring in shock, she continued, “Honey, why don’t we go out for dinner? Just like old times, then we can come…” She stopped when she saw me. “Oh! I’m sorry. Max, you didn’t tell me we were having company.”
My eyes snapped to Max’s as I whispered, “Surprise.”
“Liz, it’s…” Max started to say, but the woman had walked up to his side and slid her hand over his shoulder.
Leaning in, she spoke in a husky voice, “Max, don’t be rude, introduce me to your little friend.”
My eyes narrowed at her. “Excuse me?” I snapped.
She turned a sickeningly sweet smile on me as she said, “I’m Vanessa Whitaker a very close friend of Max’s. And you are?”
I bristled at the way she’d said the word close. It sounded way to intimate to me. Now, I was glaring at Max. He turned to look at Vanessa and said, “Would you mind waiting in the kitchen for a moment Vanessa?”
When he turned back to say something to me, she pouted and said, “But Maxiepoo, we’re going to be late for dinner and I still want to come back here so you can help me with my dress.”
“Her dress?” I growled.
“I can explain.” he said to me before turning to Vanessa, “Go wait in the kitchen.”
She shook her head, “No! I’m not going to be brushed aside like that again, Max! I think I deserve more attention from you!” She gave him a sultry grin, “After all, I am wearing your clothes.”
I’d heard enough, turning to glare at Max again, I said, “Later, Max.” Then I turned and stalked off.
“Liz, wait!” I heard him call before I heard her interrupt once more.
“Oh, let her go, baby. You and I have much more fun things to do together.” I froze and turned just in time to see her wrap her arms around his shoulders as she purred, “What do you say we skip dinner and go right to dessert? Hm? I know how much you like that.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as soon as those words left her mouth. She’d said them loud enough for me to hear them, I knew that. I knew she’d wanted me to hurt. As I watched Max untangle her arms from around his shoulders, my lips began to tremble and I was beginning to find it hard to breathe.
I was vaguely aware of Max saying something to Vanessa in a clipped voice before he made his way to me. I snapped out of my pain for a moment when I heard him calling my name. Looking up through my teary gaze, I saw him striding briskly towards me, worry written all over his face.
“Beautiful, I swear, it’s not what you think.”
I shook my head as the tears began to fall down my cheeks, “No, it’s exactly what I think, Max.” Without another word, I turned and ran to my mother’s car as I fished the keys out of my purse.
I managed to unlock and open the door when Max caught up with me. He grabbed my arm and swung me around to face him, “Please, you have to listen to me, Beautiful.”
I looked down at the ground as I whispered, “Let go of me.”
“Liz, you have to let me explain, I think…”
I pushed him away as I cried, “I don’t care what you think, Max! Just stay away from me!”
“Liz…” he reached out for me again.
“Just stay away!” I scrambled into the car, slamming the door shut and locking it. Ignoring Max who was still trying to get me to listen to his explanation, I started the car, put it in reverse, and backed out of the parking space.
Max tried to run around to my side again, but I threw the car into drive and stepped on the gas, peeling out of the lot before he had a chance to do anything else. As I turned the car into the street, I glanced up to see Max standing in the middle of the lot looking as heartbroken as I felt.

How I managed to get home in one piece I will never know. All I really remember was the pain I felt as I replayed everything I’d seen and heard at Max’s place. I had driven all the way home with tears freely falling down my cheeks and trembling lips, trying to hold in the sobs. When I’d finally made it home, I ran into the house straight for my room.
Serena was in the living room with my dad when I rushed by. All I heard her say was “Liz, what did Max…” then I’d slammed my door shut and threw myself down on my bed. I lay there with my face in my arms when I heard the knock on my door. Serena’s voice was muted as she asked, “Liz? Are you okay? Did Max give you his surprise?”
At the mention of that word, I burst into fresh tears as I began sobbing into the comforter. Serena didn’t say another word, but a few moments later there was another knock at my door.
“Liz?” asked my father, “what’s wrong?”
“Nothing! Just leave me alone!” I shouted at the door through my tears.
I heard my father’s voice growing fainter as he asked, “Rena, what exactly was Max’s surprise supposed to be?”
As it got quiet again, I stayed on my bed and let my tears run their course. I rolled onto my side and instantly caught sight of the roses on my dresser. Staring at them, I thought again of what I’d seen and heard at Max’s. I knew he had been trying to tell me there was an explanation for what I saw.
He’d told me it wasn’t what I thought it was. My heart knew Max would never do something like that to me, but my eyes saw what they saw and I’d heard what I’d heard. My heart believed in Max, my mind was going with the hard evidence that was right there in front of me.
I sat up slowly and brushed the tears away with my hands. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I got up to go wash my face. As I made my way to the bathroom, I could hear voices coming from the front of the house.
Frowning, I walked over to my door and cracked it open.
“…to see you! Haven’t you hurt her enough?” That was my father’s angry voice.
“Mr. Parker, you don’t understand, I just need to explain…” came Max’s calmer voice before he was cut off again.
“I don’t need to understand anything! All that matters is that she’s here and you’re not! I don’t care what it is you did, but my daughter doesn’t want to see you, so I suggest you leave right now!”
“Mr. Parker…”
“Mr. Evans! I’m not going to ask you again! You cannot come in. You need to leave and don’t ever come back! Do you hear me? If you ever set foot on my property again, so help me but I will call the authorities!”
“Liz!” yelled Max.
“That’s enough!”
“Liz! I know you can hear me, please…”
“Mr. Evans if you don’t…”
“I swear I can explain…”
“That’s it, I’m calling the cops…”
“Beautiful, just give me a chance…”
“Not another word from you! Get off of my property or I will have you arrested!”
Silence followed those words for a few minutes before I heard my father yell, “Don’t you ever come near my daughter again, you hear me!”
I jumped when I heard the front door slam shut and quickly closed my door. Leaning back against it I closed my eyes with a sigh. Seconds later I felt the tears pricking the back of my eyelids and slowly slid down to the floor. Sobbing once more, I drew my knees up, hugged them, and buried my face in my arms.

It was just after ten that night when there was another knock on my door. I had moved back to my bed, lying down on my back and staring up at the ceiling. As I got up to answer it, thinking it was my mother having returned from taking Kevin to his awards banquet, I was pleasantly surprised to find Maria on the other side.
She gave me a little smile as she said, “Hi, chica, can I come in?”
I nodded and held the door open for her. She watched me close the door and return to my bed, sitting in the middle of it. With a sigh, she sat down next to me and gave me a worried look.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
I nodded, “Yeah, I’m fine now.”
She moved closer and wrapped an arm around my shoulders as she asked, “Want to talk about it?”
I sighed and looked up at her, “How did you know?”
She gave me a gentle smile, “Max called Michael.”
I nodded and closed my eyes. “What do you know?” I asked.
She ran her fingers through my hair as she answered me. “I know that Max loves you and I know that whatever it is you think he did isn’t true.”
I swallowed, “You weren’t there Maria. You didn’t see what I saw.”
“I know, chica, but Max swears there’s a good explanation.”
My lips trembled as I felt the tears threatening to spill again. “I know there is! I know! It still doesn’t change what I saw!” I sobbed.
As she pulled me into a hug she whispered, “What did you see, Liz?”
“I got there…” I began, before stopping to clear my throat. I tried once more as I continued, “I knocked and he answered. He looked surprised to see me and when he asked what I was doing there, this woman comes out of…she comes out of his bedroom wearing one of his shirts! And she’s buttoning it up and telling him she wants to go out to dinner and then go back to his place just like old times!” I turned to look at my best friend as I squeaked, “Like old times! God, Maria they were…they were…”
Maria frowned as she pulled me into another hug, “Shh, chica, it’s okay.” I sniffled as she said, “Maybe they were just old modeling friends.”
I shook my head and proceeded to tell her everything else I’d seen and heard. I told her how Vanessa had used the word ‘we’ and how she’d emphasized the word ‘close’. I even described how she’d been practically hanging all over Max. “When he tried to tell me to wait, she told him to let me go because they had better things to do together and how she knew he liked to skip dinner and go straight to dessert! Dessert Maria! God you should have heard the way she was literally purring when she said that!”
Maria was staring at me, speechless as I finished my spiel. It took her a few moments before she spoke again, “Um, well, like I said, I’m sure there’s a perfectly good explanation for all of that.”
I rolled my eyes, “Maria!”
She sighed, closing her eyes for a moment before looking at me again. “Liz, I don’t really know what to tell you. You’re right, I wasn’t there. But you weren’t there either when they were alone. What if there is a good reason for what you saw?”
“Maria, the look on his face. The look he had when he opened his door and saw me there.”
She slid her hand into mine, “Liz, I don’t know what went on, but there is one thing I do know.” As I looked up into her eyes, she continued, “I know Max didn’t cheat on you. If he had, he wouldn’t have come here, trying to get past your father to try to talk to you. He wouldn’t have called Michael in tears to say that your father wasn’t letting him anywhere near you. He said he was afraid he’d never have the chance to explain what had really happened. He’s terrified that you won’t listen to him and he’ll lose you. Liz, Max is with Michael right now. Michael said he’s never seen Max this upset before.”
I closed my eyes and swallowed, “I know, Maria. I heard him when he came over. I heard him arguing with my father.”
“So, why didn’t you talk to him?”
“I was still too upset. I knew if I tried to talk to him then, I’d just get more upset.”
Maria nodded, “Will you talk to him now?”
I sat there for a few moments staring at the comforter. Finally, I lifted my eyes to hers and said, “I need some time, Maria. I just need some time to think.”

Part 30

I walked across the stage with a grin on my face. I stopped to accept my diploma from the principal and shake his hand before I made my way off the stage and back to my seat. As I sat there holding my diploma, I thought about how I couldn’t believe I’d actually made it this far. Graduation day had finally arrived and I knew that meant the beginning of freedom for me. I couldn’t wait to begin that phase of my life.
The rest of the ceremony was a blur until finally the cheer went up and we all tossed our caps in the air. As we were dismissed, I began to find my way through the crowd towards Maria.
The moment we saw each other, she shrieked and threw her arms around me as I grinned. “We did it, chica!” she exclaimed. “We actually graduated!”
I laughed as we pulled back to look at each other. “Yes, we did!”
She chuckled, “So? Ready to go celebrate?”
I nodded, “Yeah, let’s go find my family.”
Maria and I made our way through the crowd searching for my family. Every single one of them had actually made it to the ceremony. My parents, Isabel and Alex, Serena, and even Kevin, who came because mom had made it a part of his apology to me.
In fact, it was Kevin and my father that Maria and I first spotted. I noticed that my father was shaking Kyle’s hand, congratulating him on his own graduation. Turning to Maria, we shared a look and I rolled my eyes.
As we walked up to them, my father grinned, “Liz! Maria! Congratulations, girls!”
“Thanks, dad.” I said as he gave me and Maria a hug.
“You girls ready to go celebrate?”
Maria nodded, “Oh yeah, I’m starving!”
My father chuckled, “Okay, then.” He nodded to Kyle, “We’ll see you at the restaurant, okay Kyle?”
“Sure Mr. Parker…”
“Liz?”
All of us turned to see Max approaching with Michael in tow.
I smiled when I saw the teddy bear Max held in his hand. The little bear had on a graduation cap and carried a diploma in it’s paw and a single white rose in the other. He came up to me and handed the bear to me as he said, “Congratulations, beautiful.”
“Than…”
“Mr. Evans, I thought I made it clear that you were to stay away from my daughter!” my father growled.
I frowned up at him as I said, “Dad, it’s okay.”
My father ignored my comment and continued on, “You have no business coming here at all! I suggest you leave immediately!”
I sighed, “Dad!”
This time it was Kyle who stepped up to Max. “You heard the man, Evans. Get lost.”
Max didn’t look at Kyle at all, instead his gaze still rested on my father. “Mr. Parker, I understand you are upset, but if you would just hear me out, I can…”
“There’s nothing to hear!” My father interjected, “My daughter doesn’t want anything to do with you!”
As I moved to stand between Max and my father, Kevin moved to my father’s side and Kyle stood on the other.
“Dad…” I started, but Kyle interrupted again.
“Don’t make us remove you, Evans! My family is here!”
“Yeah,” supplied Kevin, “and everyone knows they’re the best in the business!”
I growled, “Guys! Back off!” My father opened his mouth, but I beat him to the punch, “No! I mean it dad! It’s okay, I need to talk to him.”
My father frowned as Kyle said, “Why do you need to talk to him? He did you wrong! All he wants is for you to forgive him so he can get back in your pants.”
I narrowed my eyes at Kyle, “Really? No doubt you are speaking from experience?”
Maria and Michael snickered in the background as I turned to Max, “Did you come with Michael?”
He nodded, “He invited me to see you two graduate, so I drove us here.”
Turning to my father I said, “I’m going with Maria, Michael, and Max. I’ll see you all at the restaurant.”
“Liz…”
“I’ll see you at the restaurant, dad.” Without another word, I turned and walked away from them. As Maria caught up to me, Max and Michael walked behind us. I could still hear my father grumbling to Kevin and Kyle about women and their sensibilities.
When we neared Max’s car, Maria and Michael excused themselves to go for a walk around the campus so that Max and I could sit in his car to talk.
We sat in silence for a few awkward moments before I looked up at him. “What happened, Max?”
He turned in his seat and said, “I was set up.”
I nodded with a frown, “Yeah, I suspected as much.” I sighed, “Do you know who did it?”
“Kevin and Kyle.”
“My father?”
“I don’t think he had anything to do with this one.”
I looked into his eyes, “Are you sure, Max? I mean, I know you want me to be on good terms with my father, but…”
He shook his head, “Vanessa said Kyle was the one who contacted her and when she went to meet him, Kevin was there.”
I arched an eyebrow, “They paid her!”
He shook his head, “No. Kyle found out that she once knew me. Remember the story Isabel and I told you about the stalker who gave me the nickname?”
My eyes widened, “That’s her!”
He nodded, “Yep.”
I sank back into the seat and mumbled, “No wonder she kept calling you that. It makes sense now, especially since she hinted about old times.” Suddenly, I turned a narrowed gaze on Max. “But you said it was only one date with a kiss on the cheek and you didn’t lead her on. So, why was she acting like she’d been intimate with you before?”
He sighed, “She was doing what Kyle told her to do. Vanessa said when she met with Kyle and Kevin, they filled her in about you and I, then told her what they wanted her to do when you got to my place.”
“I see. Well, how do you explain how she ended up wearing your clothes?”
He scowled, “She spilled wine on her dress.”
“What?”
“Yeah. It was really weird, Liz. After I stopped modeling, I never saw her again. Then suddenly she shows up at my place on the verge of tears. She tells me she didn’t know where else to go and she really just needed someone to talk to. So, I invited her in and we sat on the couch so I could listen to her. She made up this really good story about this guy she was in love with and how she just found out he was cheating on her. She said he had apologized to her and promised never to do it again if she gave him another chance. She told him she needed time and went to find someone to talk to about it.”
“And that’s where you come in?”
“Yes, but she admitted it was just a story. It never happened. She just used it to get into my place so you would catch us together. She was so good at convincing me that she needed a shoulder to cry on. So, I listened and comforted her and offered her a drink. She asked for wine and I gave her some. We sat there talking and she said she was feeling better. I asked how her sister was doing and she started telling me some stories. We got to laughing about them and that’s when she spilled the wine. She did it well, it drenched the entire top of her dress. So, I told her to go into the bathroom to get out of it and I’d give her some clothes she could wear while we soaked the dress.”
I folded my arms over my chest, “Damn, she’s good.”
Max nodded, “Yeah, I believed everything she said up to the point she walked out of the bedroom calling me honey. I mean, my alarms were already ringing when I saw the confused look on your face after I asked what you were doing there, but then she came out and started that spiel and I just knew something was up.”
He paused for a moment before he said, “After you left, I went back inside and demanded that she tell me what was going on because I knew that whole thing she did in front of you was an act. When I threw it in her face that we only had that one date and were never intimate at all, she finally confessed.”
“She told you Kyle set it up.”
He nodded, “He called her and asked if she was still interested in me because he was certain that I was interested in her. So, she met with him and he told her that to get me back, she had to make sure I broke up with you. He told her that I wanted to break up with you, but you wouldn’t let me. So, this plan they came up with would make you do it.”
I gasped, “She believed that!”
He rolled his eyes, “She said she’s still obsessed with me. She’d do anything to be with me.”
I made a face, “Geez, how did you get rid of her?”
“I told her that if I lost you, I’d make her life miserable.” He turned to look at me, “I said a whole lot more than that, but she got the message. By the time I was done, she was crying for real and apologizing all the way out the door.” He shrugged, “I told her to pray I’d forgive her one day, but not to ever come near me again.”
I sighed and closed my eyes, “Do you think she went back to Kyle and told him she failed?”
Max shook his head, “No. I made sure she understood not to talk to him again.”
I nodded, “Okay, so as far as Kyle knows, the plan worked.” When Max nodded, I looked out of the window and frowned.
As I sat there thinking, I could see Michael and Maria walking towards the car, holding hands. Max didn’t say anything for a few moments.
“Beautiful?”
At the sound of his nickname for me, I blinked and turned to look into his worried eyes. “What are you thinking?” he asked.
I stared at him for a moment before I said, “I’m thinking it’s time we headed to the restaurant.”

There was a sign in front of Horizons which said the restaurant was closed for a private party. Dad had arranged a celebration dinner for Maria and I and our families. But when I walked in and saw the Valentis there, I knew he had expanded that to include them.
I walked in with my arms folded over my chest and Max walking silently at my side. Maria and Michael came in behind us.
As soon as my father saw us, he grinned. “There they are! The guests of honor have arrived.”
He walked up to me with arms wide, “Congratulations, Liz!”
“Thanks.” I mumbled as I walked right past him and headed straight for Kyle. He grinned at me, “Liz, your dad…”
He didn’t get to say another word as my hand connected with his face. The slap silenced the entire room.
Ignoring the silence and the stares, I hissed at him. “How dare you! How dare you think you could ever get away with this!”
“Liz? What’s going on?” asked my father.
I continued to ignore him as I glared at Kyle. “Did you really think I would ever believe that Max would have done that to me?”
Kyle straightened up and looked me in the eyes, “He did.”
“No, he didn’t! You set him up!”
Kevin, who had been standing next to Kyle, turned to look at Kyle before looking at me. “What! Is that what he’s telling you?”
I turned my glare on him, “He didn’t have to tell me that, little brother! I already knew it.”
This time even Max was looking at me in shock.
I growled at Kyle, “Answer me this Kyle, what is my favorite flower?”
He frowned, “Roses.”
I inclined my head to Max, “Max?”
“White roses.” he answered.
I watched as realization began to sink into Kyle. “When we were together, how did you address me? Did you ever use a term of endearment?”
Kyle swallowed, “Elizabeth.”
I arched an eyebrow, “Max?”
“Beautiful.”
Kyle glanced at Max for a moment before turning to look at me. I stood there resisting the urge to hit him again as I hissed, “If you were going to pretend you were Max, the least you could have done was get it right.”
Kevin frowned, “Kyle? What did we do wrong.”
Kyle groaned as my gaze snapped to Kevin and I smiled in triumph. Kevin had just confirmed that they had indeed set Max up.
“The flowers the two of you sent to my house were red roses, not white. Which Max clearly knows are my favorite. And the note. It addressed me as Liz, not beautiful. Max rarely ever calls me anything else.”
Maria chuckled, “She’s got that right. Max almost always calls her beautiful. It’s his name for her.”
My father frowned at Kyle, “You set this up?”
Kyle looked at him as he said, “What else was I supposed to do? Nothing else was working. So, I thought if she found out he was going back to his old ways, she’d dump him.”
As my father sighed, I snapped at Kyle. “Get this straight Kyle, even if Max and I broke up, I would never ever go back to a manipulative asshole like you!”
“Liz…” my father warned.
I turned to glare at him, “Don’t you dare stick up for him again! You will hear what I have to say! All of you!” I shouted as I turned on Kyle once more. “I don’t care if you are the last man on earth! There is no way I’d ever marry a man who constantly slept around with other women! You know you can’t lie about that! I heard it from the horse’s mouth, Kyle! All these things you keep trying to pin on Max! They are all true about you! You are the one who is always cheating! You are the one using blackmail! Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were a druggie or alcoholic to boot!”
“Elizabeth! Now is not the time…”
“Jeffery Parker! Don’t interrupt her again!” my mother snapped.
My father turned to glare at my mother as I snarled at Kyle, “High school is over Kyle. And all these little games of yours. They will stop! I don’t ever want to see you anywhere near me or my family again! If you ever do, I’m slapping a restraining order on you!”
“You can’t do that!” he growled.
“Try me.” I growled right back.
“Liz, you’re being unreasonable. Think about this.” muttered my father.
“There’s nothing to think about. Kyle isn’t worth a damn! Why the hell do you have to keep defending him!” I roared.
“He was just trying to protect you! It’s what he does!”
“You call that protection! What about protection from him? Jesus dad, he tried to rape me!”
My mother’s eyes went wide as gasps were heard around the room.
“Liz, we talked about…”
No! We didn’t! I tried to tell you, but you just accused me of spreading lies about him! Why would I lie about that! And when I tried to tell you what a kind of man he was sleeping with all these girls, you told me he wouldn’t have done that if I’d just let him fuck me!”
“Elizabeth! I am your father! Don’t you ever…”
“That is enough, Jeff!” My mother yelled.
When my father tried to say something else, she hissed at him, “Not another word! If you defend that boy again, I will be right there next to my daughter slapping an accomplice to rape suit against you.”
My father sullenly shut his mouth as I glared at him, tears in my eyes. “You’ve wasted your time on the wrong man father. After everything that’s happened. After everything Kyle did and you let slide. Max still tried to convince me that you were doing it because I was your daughter and you just wanted what was best for me. Max always gave you the benefit of the doubt, he always took your side.” I paused, swallowing the lump that was beginning to form in my throat.
As my lips trembled, I whispered, “Every time you shot him down, every time I told him what you said about him, he never stopped defending you. Why couldn’t you ever see how good he is? Why couldn’t you ever take our side?”
Max moved to my side and wrapped an arm around my waist. As I leaned against him for support, I spoke one last time to my father. “I never thought there would be a day when I actually hated my father. But I do. I will never forgive you for this. Ever.” I turned to look at Kyle and Kevin, “Don’t ever come near me again. I hope you both are happy in hell together.”
I turned in Max’s arms and hugged him, “Take me home, Max.”
Without another word, Max led me out of the restaurant, leaving behind a silent gathering.

Max and I packed up my things in silence. After leaving the restaurant and getting into his car, he asked me where I wanted him to take me. I told him I wanted to go back to my house to pack my things to move back in with him, if he would have me.
Once we were at my parent’s house, inside my room, he’d asked me where we should start. That had set off the tears and Max had rocked me in his arms as we sat on the edge of my bed.
When I’d finally gotten myself under control again, I sniffled and told him what I wanted to pack. We’d taken the suitcases out of my closet and began to pack the things I wanted to take with me.
We had been packing for a good twenty minutes when the doorbell rang. Max and I looked at each other with a frown before he said, “I’ll see who it is.”
I nodded and watched him leave the room before going back to my packing.
A few minutes later, Max returned with Maria and Michael in tow.
I looked up at Maria as she gave me a teary smile, “Oh girlfriend, I’m so sorry.”
I nodded as I walked into her open arms. Returning her hug I said, “I’m sorry for ruining your graduation dinner, Maria.”
She tsked as she moved back to look into my eyes, “Oh please! As if I wanted to celebrate with those losers anyway.” She gave me a smile, “You guys are all I need right here.”
I chuckled, “Thanks, girlfriend.”
“You’re welcome.”
I turned to look at Michael. “So, did she have to threaten you to get you here?” I teased.
He laughed at that. “Nah. We thought you could use a hand.”
I arched an eyebrow as I looked back at my best friend.
Maria nodded, “We thought we’d come help you pack. That is, if you want some help.”
I laughed as I hugged her again, “Of course! I’d love that!”
“Great! Just tell us what to do and we’ll get to it.”
Before I had a chance to begin, Alex’s voice interrupted, “Don’t forget us!”
We all turned to see Alex and Isabel coming through my bedroom door.
I laughed, “You two are going to help me move too?”
“Liz! Of course we are! I wouldn’t be a very good big brother if I didn’t would I?”
“And I wouldn’t be a very good sister in law either,” Isabel chimed in.
We all shared a few laughs as we all began to move my things.

Alex had called a friend of his and asked if we could borrow his pick up truck. When he agreed to swing by and drop it off along with the extra boxes he had in his garage, we had all discussed how to move my things. The bigger items would be put into the truck, while the smaller items would be loaded into Max’s, Maria’s, and Alex’s cars.
Everyone was now going in and out of the house with boxes and things, while I remained in my room packing up the rest of the things I was taking. That was how things were when my mom returned home with Serena.
“Liz?”
I looked up from the box I was packing to see my mother standing in the doorway with a sad expression on her face.
“Mom, I…”
She shook her head and walked over to me, “Don’t apologize. You have nothing to apologize for Liz.”
I nodded as she stopped and slid her fingers through my hair. “I’m so sorry, baby,” she whispered.
Fresh tears welled up in my eyes as my mother hugged me to her. I stood there hugging her back.
“Oh mom,” I sobbed.
“Shh. It’s okay, baby. I know, I know.”
When I slowly pulled back, she looked into my eyes and smiled, “So, you’re moving back in with him?”
I nodded, “I’m sorry mom, but I can’t stay here.”
“I know.” She sighed, “It’s okay, it’s time I let you grow up anyway. You are going off to college in the fall, so it’s only fair to let you go.”
“I’m not going far, mom. I’ll still be in the city. We can still see each other every day. And I promised Serena I’d be there to help her get used to her new school.”
She smiled, “Right. She did mention that to me the other day.” She let her eyes travel around the room, “So, you look just about done here.”
I nodded, “Yeah, everyone is just packing it up into the cars.”
She chuckled, “Need any more room? We can use the suburban and my BMW.”
I laughed, “I don’t know, we’ll have to ask the guys. They’re doing all the coordinating.”
“Okay, I’ll go ask them.” She turned to look at my room again, “Are you going to take all of that stuff to Max’s apartment?”
“No, Max is renting a storage space, so I’m going to put most of the stuff in there and take what I need to his place. That way anytime I need anything, I can just go get it from the storage unit.”
“That’s good.”
I gave her a smile before she made her way to the door, “Okay, I’ll go see if they need more cars.”
“Mom?”
She turned to look at me, “Yes?”
“I’m sorry. If I ruined things between you and dad.”
She shook her head as she came back to my side, “No Liz. I told you, you have nothing to be sorry about.”
She caressed my cheek as she said, “I should be the one apologizing. I never knew what that boy tried to do to you, to my daughter. And Jeff, he never said a word. I believed everything he told me about Kyle and I never questioned it.” She paused for a moment before she whispered, “I failed you, Liz. I failed to be a good mother. And I failed to be there to protect you from him.”
I sighed as I gave her a hug, “It’s not your fault. I didn’t tell you that it was Kyle who came with Kevin that day. I should have been honest about what happened, even about Max.”
“I know why you did it, Liz. Believe me, I know and I don’t blame you.”
I moved back and said with a smile, “Okay, so let’s just forgive each other for not being open with each other and move on. Hopefully we have learned from this.”
She laughed, “Yes, that’s a wise decision, oh smart daughter of mine.”
We both giggled at that before she gave me one more hug.
Max came in wearing a frown on his face, “Beautiful, is there much more? Because we’re running out of cars.”
My mother and I looked at each other and laughed again.
Turning a smile to Max, my mother said, “No such luck, Max. But at least you now have my car and the family suburban at your disposal.”
He grinned, “Thanks, Nancy.”
She nodded, “Let me go get the keys and I’ll help with the loading.”
As she disappeared out the door, Max came up to my side. “How are you holding up beautiful?”
I smiled and wrapped my arms around his waist, “I’m good.”
He pressed a kiss on the top of my head.
“Max?”
“Hm?”
“I’m sorry for running like that. I just…”
“It’s okay, Liz.”
I shook my head as I looked up into his eyes, “No. It’s not, Max. I knew you would never do that to me. I knew it. It was just. Just seeing you with her. It brought all these images to my mind about the things you told me you used to do. About what you were. How women always flocked to you. I was just jealous.”
He caressed my cheek, “You have nothing to be jealous about beautiful. I told you that.”
I nodded, “I know. You have no idea how hard it is for me to convince myself of that. I’m trying Max. It’s just that there are some days when I still can’t believe that someone like you could ever love someone like me. And I find myself thinking that maybe you deserve better.”
Max closed his eyes as he whispered, “Liz.” He paused for a moment before opening his eyes again and looking into mine.
Curling his fingers around the nape of my neck, he pulled me to him and leaned his forehead against mine, “Someday I’m going to convince you that you are exactly what I deserve. I‘m going to spend the rest of my life trying to convince you that you are the only one I’ll ever love, beautiful.”
I smiled as he lowered his lips to mine and sealed his proclamation with a kiss full of all the love he had for me.
