Thanks for the feedback

Timelord31 - now that would be telling wouldn't it?
tesquathisy - I guess being good students has it's advantages maybe? Glad you enjoyed the chapter though and thanks for the wishing me luck with my exams, they're all over now of course, but now it's a case of waiting :-?.

Sorry for the long wait, but I do have a new chapter finally so maybe you'll forgive me. Thanks for being patient and hope anyone reading is still enjoying the story. Here's the new chapter.

Chapter 21

“Hey Liz…”

Liz smiled brightly as her boyfriend greeted her, leaning over the counter to give him a quick kiss as he sat down. “Hey Max…”

“I just thought I’d pop in on the way home…see how you were doing…” Max said by way of explanation.

Liz raised an eyebrow in amusement. “Yeah right...” She shook her head. “Max, I do appreciate the concern really, but I’m okay…I had a stomach bug, it was nasty at the time, but I’m fine now, honest…”

He gave a sheepish shrug. “Sorry, didn’t mean to be too obvious…I was just…”

“Worried…” She finished for him with a smile. “I know, but honestly I’m good… Do you want a drink…?”

Max nodded. “Yeah, sure, that’d be great thanks…”

Responding silently, Liz smiled, fixing him a cherry coke quickly and setting it down in front of him before heading over to see what the guy who had just called from table three wanted.

It turned out to be a simple drinks order, and once she had fixed and delivered it, Liz returned to the counter with a smile on her face. After days stuck in bed, it was just so nice to be up and about, to say nothing of the rather pleasant addition that Max being here made to her shift.

“You look happy…” Max observed as he watched her moving behind the counter, her shiny brown hair tied back in a ponytail which was bobbing up and down as she moved back and forth working.

His comment was rewarded with another big smile as Liz turned towards him and nodded. “Yeah well I guess I have a lot to be happy about…” She responded softly as she stepped forward and leant over the counter again, her eyes twinkling mischievously. “After all, I have this great guy for starters who is pretty amazing…”

“Really…anyone I know…?” He asked playfully

She laughed and shook her head. “Oh, yeah, I think you just might…”

Grinning, her boyfriend looked back at her. “Well, you know I think this guy, whoever he is, is a very lucky guy…” His tone had now lowered and taken on a serious edge as he looked into her eyes.

“Not as lucky as me…” Liz returned in an equally serious manner as their gazes became locked into one another, the outside world seemingly ceasing to exist for the couple for a moment, and neither seemed to move until a cough sounded from behind, alerting them to the presence of Mr Parker who was stood behind…

Liz swallowed. “Oh dad, hey…” She pulled back from her boyfriend and straightened her skirt. “I was just...talking to Max…”

Jeff nodded. “So I see… Maybe you’d like to go see to table eight though, I think they’re just about ready to order…”

His daughter nodded quickly. “Oh, yeah, sure…sorry…” She grabbed an order pad from the front of her apron and slipped out from behind the counter, fixing a smile on her face as she headed to the customer’s table just as her father had requested.

“Hey Mr Parker…” Max raised his hand awkwardly in greeting as he reached for his drink.

“Afternoon Max…” Mr Parker nodded again as he moved behind the counter to get something he needed. Looking over to where his daughter was busy with the customers, he seemed to think for a moment before looking back at the young man in front of him. He had tried to reassure his wife when it came to her misgivings about the relationship which his daughter was in, but he had to admit that until he had walked into the diner a few moments before, he hadn’t realised the true extent of that relationship.

The two teens seemed…besotted with one another… He had known for a long time that his daughter’s feelings were strong of course, and the way Max looked at her to him confirmed that he felt the same, but this was something quite different and far more serious than he would have expected for his seventeen year old daughter….

At Liz’s request, he had kept his ‘interrogations’ to a minimum with Max in the past, but he was beginning to wonder if it was time to say a little more…

The question of course was how to broach such a subject, although perhaps the way that Max had just turned to watch Liz again gave him an opening… “I’m sure she’ll be back soon enough…”

Turning in his seat, Max appeared distinctly uncomfortable as he realised that he was being watched. “Oh, yes…sorry…” He murmured, considering for a moment making a quick exit, but soon dismissing the idea since it probably wouldn’t help the situation and would besides, necessitate his leaving his girlfriend which was something he had no desire to do…

Jeff noted each movement carefully, considering before speaking again. “You and Liz are very serious about one another aren’t you…?”

“Yes Mr Parker…I believe we are…” The young man being questioned nodded, his tone calm and sincere. “I love your daughter very much…” He added after a moment’s concideration, looking up to meet the other man’s gaze in the hopes that this might help show that he wasn’t saying this for effect.

“So she seems to believe…” Mr Parker responded evenly, declining to say anything more for the moment as the petite brunette at the centre of this questioning arrived back at the counter and excusing himself from the teens once more as he headed back towards the office.

Watching her father as he headed through into the back, Liz turned to her boyfriend. “What was that all about…?” She questioned softly, careful this time not to get distracted, but keep busy as she waited for his response.

“Honestly…I think maybe your dad is getting more than a little concerned about you…” Max responded after a moment. He gave her a wry smile. “I don’t suppose the whole ‘zoning’ thing helped…”

Liz nodded, chewing on her lip in a nervous fashion as she grabbed a cloth and began to wipe down the work surfaces for lack of anything else to do around him. “It’s getting worse you know…it’s one thing to do it in the jeep, or even at school, but here…” She shook her head uncertainly, obviously trying, and failing, to make sense of the strange ‘symptoms’ the two of them had been experiencing recently.

“I know…” He knew she was right of course, ‘at school’ usually meant the eraser room, and that, like in the jeep, was somewhat private… This had been extremely public though, and Max knew that it would have done nothing to endear him to Liz’s parents… Her mother was already somewhat hostile, feeling things had happened too fast, and now her father had his questions too… “We’ll work this out though, I promise…”

**********

“Do you ever go home?” Liz questioned in amusement as, for the second day in three, her boyfriend arrived at the Crashdown while she was working.

“Anyone would think that you didn’t want to see me you know…” Max commented with a pout. “I could feel hurt…”

“Oh no, I don’t want to see you, of course not…” She stuck out her tongue playfully, waving away his comments with a tone which showed exactly what she thought of them. “It couldn’t be instead that I was hoping you might go straight home so that you would do your homework and we could maybe do something after my shift…?”

“Really?” The teasing edge disappeared completely from Max’s voice as he heard this suggestion although after a moment’s consideration his response was rather more subdued than it might have been. “Are you sure you should be going out though…?” He questioned gently. He didn’t want to cause problems, but couldn’t deny that he wondered if she was taking everything on too soon after being off sick. Already she was back to normal shifts, and had been working hard later in the evenings on catch-up work which she needed to complete. Much as he liked the idea of going out with her, he wondered if they would be better waiting until the weekend…

“Now who sounds like they don’t want to see who?” Liz responded in a teasing manner, shaking her head and laughing. “Honestly Max, I’m fine!” She repeated the same statement she had made over and over to so many people since returning to school that week.

“I just don’t want you to do too much too soon… We could wait until Friday if you wanted…”

His girlfriend groaned. “I don’t…what I would really like is to go out with you tonight…I want to spend some time with just you…now…” Leaning into his arms, she rested her head against his chest for a moment and looked up at him. “What do you say…?”

Some time with her…just the two of them… Max couldn’t help thinking that sounded very appealing… And it was so hard to deny Liz anything when she was looking at him like that… He could feel his objections fading away as he thought about the time they could have together and finally he nodded a smile adorning his face as he looked back at his girlfriend. “Okay, yes, of course I want to if you’re sure… What time do you finish…?”

Liz smiled. “Seven…maybe you could pick me up about half past…?” She suggested softly.

“Sure…” He nodded. “Do you know what you want to do…? We could go to the cinema maybe…?”

“Not the cinema…there’s nothing good on you know…”

Max grinned. “Well, I wasn’t necessarily thinking of watching…”

“MAX!” Liz’s eyes widened as she shook her head, her cheeks flushing deeply at the suggestive tone of his voice.

“Sorry…” He shrugged awkwardly, not completely sure where that came from... “We could just go for a drive though…if you wanted…?”

“Yeah…I’d like that…it sounds really good…” His girlfriend responded softly, pausing a moment and then opening her mouth to say more but stopping as she heard a call from one of the tables. Knowing what had happened earlier in the week, she knew that she couldn’t afford to get distracted from her work, and flashing an apologetic look in Max’s direction, she excused herself quickly to see what was wanted.

Max nodded understandingly. “Okay, so I’ll see you later than…about half seven…?”

“Unless you want to hang around just a little longer…” Liz turned briefly to him again with a smile that was meant just for him. “Just I’m due for a break in about quarter of an hour…If you can wait that long, I could maybe come and sit with you for a bit…?” She suggested sweetly with a look which gave the impression that butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth.

Smiling as he settled back on his seat Max shook his head as he watched her moving across the diner floor. As though she needed to ask…of course he’d still be there…

**********

“Max…” Nancy nodded to the young man as he entered the diner.

“Hi Mrs Parker…” Max did his best to try and hide his discomfort as his girlfriend’s mother greeted him. He knew well enough by now that she was just looking for some reason to disapprove it seemed, and didn’t want to give her any excuse.

“I thought you were in earlier…what brings you back so soon…?”

“Me…” Liz responded for him as she re-entered the diner and walked up behind her mother. After finishing her shift, she had popped up to the apartment briefly to freshen up and get changed, and in place of her uniform was now wearing a skirt and top. Flashing a smile, she reached out to her boyfriend and looked back at her mom. “We were just going to catch a movie or something…if that’s okay…?”

Mrs Parker didn’t look too happy as took in her daughter’s appearance. “Don’t you think you should be resting, or catching up on schoolwork…?” She questioned, clearly unsatisfied with the explanation because as far as she was concerned, there was no way Liz should be going out that evening.

“I’ll make sure she’s not late back Mrs Parker…” Max did his best to try and help, squeezing his girlfriend’s hand gently, as he drew her closer to his side.

“And I’m practically caught up with schoolwork already, honest mom…” Liz’s voice took on a pleading tone, knowing all too well where her mother was going with this. “I think getting out after being cooped up all weekend would be good for me… I promise I’ll be back before my curfew!”

With all her objections effectively silenced, Nancy had little option but to nod. She could try and insist on her daughter remaining at home of course, but she was getting older, and it became more difficult as she did, to effectively treat her as a child. There was nothing literally wrong with the couple going out, and they had promised to be back at a reasonable time…

“I think that will be fine…” Jeff answered for his wife as he arrived in time to hear his daughter’s pleas.

Liz grinned as she turned to hug her father. “Thanks dad.”

He nodded. “Alright, but just remember to be home on time…”

“We will, thanks Mr Parker, Mrs Parker...have a good evening…” Max nodded politely as he took Liz’s hand in his and began to lead her towards the door which he then opened and held in a gentlemanly manner.

Smiling softly, Liz stepped outside and then waited for him to join her before the couple continued along and crossed the road. Climbing into the passenger seat as Max held open the door, Liz settled herself as her boyfriend came round the driver’s side.

“So, I don’t think I’ve told you how incredible you look tonight…” Max began as turned in his seat to look at her. Although he knew it probably wouldn’t have gone down very well with her mother, he had been unable to ignore how the delicate fabric of her skirt swished against her legs and the red top she had chosen clung to every curve. It was a simple v-neck, nothing particularly extraordinary, but red was his favourite colour on her, and she just looked so…

Blushing, his girlfriend held up a hand in protest. “Max…”

He looked back at her innocently. “What, I’m only telling the truth…”

“Thank you…” She responded in a voice so soft that he barely heard her.

Grinning, he leant forward, closing the distance between them to capture her lips in his for a moment before pulling back. “So… Are we going to the movies as you told your mom…?” He questioned mischievously. “Because I could have sworn you said that there was nothing on…”

A smile of amusement spread over her face as she looked back at him, her eyes twinkling. “Well I couldn’t exactly say I just wanted to spend time with you…you can imagine how that would have gone down can’t you…” She raised an eyebrow as she reached her point and then laughed. “Besides, I did say ‘or something’…just didn’t specify what the ‘or something’ might be…”

“So I take it movies are still out…?”

She smiled coyly. “Unless you want to…”

Max shook his head. “I think you know exactly what I want…but I don’t think staying here much longer is a very good idea considering that your mom or dad could look out anytime…”

His tone might have been teasing, but his message was completely serious and Liz nodded, agreeing that they should relocate at least, and reluctantly sitting back to strap herself in as they pulled away from the kerb and headed down the road.

“So, any thoughts on what you want to do…assuming that movies are out…?” Max glanced over at her briefly to ask before turning his attention back to the road ahead.

“Do we have to do anything really…?” In all honestly Liz couldn’t help but feel she would be perfectly happy just continuing to sit here with him… Assuming it came with a few more of those kisses of course…

Her boyfriend raised an eyebrow at her response, but said nothing as they continued to drive along for the moment.

It wasn’t too long before they selected a spot to stop… Just outside town, off the main road. Given the time of night there was little traffic, and neither really wanted to go any further knowing that the longer they travelled to get there, the longer time they had to allow for returning…

“So…” Liz turned in her seat as she unbuckled her belt once the engine had been turned off.

Max smiled. “So…” He echoed her as he too turned so that he was facing her and their heads dipped forward, mutually closing the distance between them from both sides. A moment later their lips met, hesitantly at first and then more fully as both deepened the kiss and Liz slipped her arms around his neck.

It didn’t take long for their positions in the jeep to change further, Liz sliding onto Max’s lap more fully as their arms and lips intertwined and they focused on just being together as the flashes began to flow between the two of them...

Chapter 22

“Thanks Alex…” Isabel looked over at her boyfriend before she got out of the car. “I had a really nice time tonight…”

Alex grinned as he looked over at her, reaching out to touch her hand. “Well you know I had a pretty good time too…” He commented softly, unable to resist leaning forward to give her another quick kiss. “In fact, I can definitely say that I’m still having a rather nice time right now…”

Laughing, his girlfriend pulled back, her cheek’s coloured flushing from his words. “Hmm, yes, I think I got that…” She commented playfully, leaning back to kiss him again now before pulling back with some amount of reluctance. “Unfortunately I don’t think that sitting outside when the living room light is on in my house is really a very good idea…” Raising an eyebrow, she indicated the dim illumination which could be seen in one of the windows of the house.

“Ooh, yeah, of course…” Alex nodded quickly. “Let’s get you inside…” Smiling again at Isabel, he climbed out of the car and, ever the gentleman, came to open her passenger door.

The gesture was so simple, but perfectly ‘Alex’, that Isabel couldn’t help smiling. It was strange, she couldn’t help thinking, how their date had been so simple – pizza, chips and talking – and yet she had enjoyed it far more than any of the more elaborate ones she had been on with guys in the past. It was all about the company, she decided with a smile as she climbed out and took the hand her boyfriend offered. “Thanks…” She murmured softly.

Looking down at their intertwined fingers, he smiled, beginning to swing his arm, and consequently hers, back and forth as he leant forward to kiss her just once more. “No, thank you…” He responded in an equally soft voice as they began to walk up the path towards the front door.

A warm feeling seemed to encompass Isabel as they approached the door, and it was with some reluctance that she released his hand in order to get her keys from her bag. Pulling them out, she inserted a key in the lock and turned back to her boyfriend before turning. “I guess I’ll see you tomorrow…?”

Alex grinned and nodded. “Count on it, I’ll pick you up in the morning as usual.” He confirmed with another smile, restricting himself to a mere peck on the lips now before backing up and raising his hand in something of a wave. “Sweet dreams…see you tomorrow…”

“Night…” Isabel’s voice was almost inaudible, so soft was her tone as she responded, opening the door and stepping inside, before turning to watch Alex as he headed back to the car.

“Isabel…?” A voice which she recognised of that of her mother drifted into the hall and although she responded immediately, confirming that it was her, she made no effort to move away from the door, her eyes continuing to watch the figure of her boyfriend as he climbed into the car and drove away. In fact, it wasn’t until he was completely out of sight that she now closed the door, turning and heading towards the living room where she knew the light she had seen originated and her mother would be waiting.

“Isabel…?” Diane had just stood up, wondering if everything was okay as her daughter walked into the room.

“Sorry mom…I was just making sure Alex got off okay…” Isabel explained as she stepped further into the room. “It’s getting late though so I guess I’ll be getting to bed now…”

“Honey, could just spare me a few minutes…?” She requested softly.

Isabel looked awkward. She knew she was late back, but it was only a few minutes and had been hoping that by heading straight to bed it wouldn’t be a problem… “I’m sorry I’m late, Alex and I were just talking, and I guess we lost track of time…”

Mrs Evans looked quite amused as she listened to her daughter’s explanation. She was a little late, but actually that had nothing to do with what she wanted to say. Smiling, she shook her head. “Am I that much of an ogre… It’s fine honey, it’s only a few minutes, and I was actually wanting to ask about your brother, certainly not the time…”

“Max…?” The younger of the two women looked a little surprised.

Her mother nodded. “That’s right… He’s out obviously, but I was just wondering if you knew when he would be getting back in…?”

Actually Isabel didn’t even know he was supposed to be out. As far as she knew Max had been at home all evening – well, all evening except for his obligatory visit to the Crashdown…

“You didn’t know…?” Diane read her expression easily. “He said he was going out with Liz, but with her having been a little sick recently I can’t say I was expecting him to be out this late…”

Isabel shook her head, her tone taking on a reassuring tone as she spoke. “Actually no, I didn’t, but I’m sure he’s okay mom. Probably the Parkers asked him in when he took Liz back or something…he’ll be back soon I’m sure…”

Mrs Evans smiled and nodded with a sigh as she realised that her teenage daughter had read her reactions perfectly as usual. It wasn’t the first time, and it probably wouldn’t be the last she knew… “I’m sorry honey…I know the two of you are growing up, and I know that I have to begin to let go a little, but it’s natural that I worry about y-“ Mid sentence, she broke off abruptly as there came the sound of a vehicle outside, crossing to the window and looking out.

“You were saying…?” Isabel smiled brightly at her mother as the motor ceased as a vehicle pulled up onto the drive, closely a few minutes later by the sound of the front door opening, providing confirmation, not that she felt it was necessary, that her brother was indeed home.

“Hey mom, sorry I’m late…” Max’s voice travelled into the living room from the hallway as he passed on his way to the stairs. He knew full well he was later than he should have been, but was hoping by heading straight for the stairs that it would be passed over without any trouble.

Although usually she would have called him back, Diane had to admit that neither Isabel nor Max were that late back and instead she shook her head and smiled, wishing him a good night, and doing the same for her daughter as she again now said she was heading to bed.

“Night mom…” Isabel leant over to give her mother a kiss before heading out of the room and up the stairs to her room. Opening the door, she stepped inside and switched on the light, getting ready for bed before counting to ten in silence.

As she reached ten in her mind, as though on cue there came a knock on the door and, smiling in amusement, Isabel crossed her room to let her brother in.

“Hey Izzy…” He offered his sister a smile as the door opened.

“Hey…” She returned the smile as she stepped back to allow him to enter. “Good night…?” She questioned in a teasing tone as she noted the happy look on his face.

Max nodded. “Definitely…” He grinned at her. “Of course I could ask the same of you…?” He commented playfully. “Because you do look unusually happy…in fact the correct phrase might be to say that you’re glowing…” His amber eyes twinkled brightly in amusement as he noted the telling blush which was spreading on his sister’s cheeks. “Looks like I was right then…”

Shooting a mock glare in his direction, Isabel felt her cheeks burning and waited a few minutes before responding finally. “Yes, am happy, and I did have a good evening-no, actually that’s not the right way to put it, I had a great evening…” She admitted softly, the smile seemingly covering the whole of her face now as her eyes twinkled and her skin shone.

Max wasn’t sure if he had ever seen his sister this happy, but he was pleased for her… Nodding, he gave her a genuine smile. “I’m glad Izzy…you deserve to be happy…”

Isabel nodded awkwardly. “Thanks…” She wasn’t exactly used to feeling like this, but it felt wonderful… Of course talking about it to her brother wasn’t the first thing on her ‘to do’ list, and as she felt herself blushing again, she attempted to redirect the conversation, focusing on her brother as opposed to herself as she turned the questions round on him. “So, enough about me… How about you, you didn’t say you were going out tonight?”

He shrugged. “That would be because I didn’t know I was…” He responded simply. “I dropped in to see Liz on the way back home after school-“

“As usual…” His sister smirked as she interrupted him.

Max looked unimpressed as he continued. “As I said I dropped in to see Liz on the way home, and she suggested that we go out after her shift.”

“Because you haven’t seen each other in an age…” Isabel continued to mock in a teasing manner.

Although he knew she didn’t mean it, Max found himself frowning. “Actually, it seemed like it…” He sighed and shook his head. “I mean I know I went to see her when she was sick, but…”

“It wasn’t the same…?” His sister suggested with a smile as she rolled her eyes. “You know I don’t know about the whole ‘being together’ thing being anything other than just the two of you… You’re crazy about one another; anyone can see that – even if it did take the two of you over a year to get your act together!”

It wasn’t meant to, but the mention of recent experiences caused Max to frown again. If it was just the losing track of time and spending lots of time together he might actually agree with his sister, but there were the flashes that Liz had got too, the flashes which as yet were unexplained… He sighed and shook his head. “I don’t know Isabel, all I know is that every moment I’m away from her, I feel a longing, a yearning… I feel as though I need to be with her all the time…”

“Even now…?” The tone of the conversation had shifted rapidly from being fun and teasing, to being serious once more. She could see by the look in his eyes that this bothered him, and while it might be nothing more than their unbelievable love and a bit of imagination perhaps, there was also the possibility that it might be something more. Watching her brother as he nodded his confirmation, she reached out to touch his hand reassuringly. “We’ll work this out Max, I promise…”

“Thanks Izzy…”

**********

After taking Isabel home, Alex headed back to his own house and, once home, went straight up to his room, walking in through the door and switching on his computer on his way over to the window in order to pull the blinds. Closing his door carefully, he switched on the lamp by his desk and turned off the main overhead light so that anyone passing his room would probably assume he was getting ready for bed or was already sleeping.

Not that his mother was likely to come into his room without knocking, but he didn’t particularly want her knowing that he had been keeping the late nights which had become usual recently. It wasn’t ideal by any means, and while he told Max he was fine, he couldn’t deny he was tired.

Liz was his friend however, and the work he was doing on the translation might help her…

More than once he had thought he had it. The programme had run close to translating a couple of times it seemed, but then an error had occurred, indicating that it didn’t work. With more advanced software it would be much easier of course, but he didn’t have that advanced software, just his computer, and what he had was what he had to work with…

So, removing his coat, he dropped it onto the bed and pulled out his chair, taking a seat as the computer turned on, and typing in his password carefully. As the programme booted up and the screen filled with lines of symbols he sighed, staring at them as had become usual and wondering if he would ever really know what it all said.

Grabbing a file from the drawer, he grabbed a pencil and opened the flap of the file, revealing an annotated paper copy of the text which he was attempting to translate. “Come on, there has to be something…” He muttered to himself, absently flicking the pencil between his forefinger and middle finger and tapping it against the file as his eyes began to study the lines of the text again.

If only he could find the primer. A ‘Rosetta Stone’ of types… It would solve all the problems and provide proof that the translation obtained was correct…

But he couldn’t. He has scoured the text, looking for anything which seemed even remotely possible but had found nothing.

Nor was his own manual attempt at translation coming out any better than the computer’s… Each programme he had run kept picking out the same first few letters and words, so he had based his attempt at a translation on those, but once they were done there were so many possible combinations that it seemed hopeless.

Letting out a deep sigh, he leant back in his chair, taking two of the legs of the chair off the floor and stretching, before dropping back down in time to cover his mouth and hide a yawn.

“Alex, are you still up honey…?” A soft knock sounded on the door as his mother stopped outside.

Switching off his monitor quickly, Alex pushed back his chair and stood up, walking over and opening the door a crack. “Just getting ready for bed mom…”

Mrs Whitman smiled and nodded. “Alright, but make sure you’re not up too much longer okay honey…its getting late…”

Alex nodded back. “Yeah, sure…” He agreed before closing his door and returning to his previous position. As the screen again lit up with the shapes of the mysterious text and images, another yawn rose in his throat. He remembered how Max had told him not to overdo it, saying they didn’t want him ill too, and smiled. “Just another hour and then I’ll pack in…” He murmured in the dimly lit room as he turned over the paper he had been studying and moved onto the next section. Reading through, he picked up a blank sheet of paper from the side, leaning it against the file as he noted down a new key, scanning the page as he tried to pick out all the other symbols of the same type.

It was a long and boring process of trail and error basically, but it was really all he had. Hopefully the computer would turn up something soon of course, but it didn’t hurt to try…

**********

Despite knowing it would be a good idea to get an early night, Liz lay awake in bed for a long time after Max dropped her off and she supposedly headed up to bed. She wrote in her diary, read through past entries and thought about Max…

There was a large part of her that was unhappy with the way they seemed to want to be together all the time. The others teased them about it to an extent, and Maria had always said they were bad of course, but this wasn’t as it had been in the past…it was different…

Before it had been simply that they wanted to be together; now it was more a sense of need…

Max had dropped her off home less than three hours before, and she felt as though it was an age. She yearned to see him and talk to him, to feel his arms around her…

No, this wasn’t just a case of being soppy, it was something more…

And yet there was another part that didn’t know why she was so worried… Certainly it was strange, but it didn’t feel ‘wrong’… She loved Max, with every fibre of her being, and all she wanted was to be with him.

But was that really such a bad thing…? Was spending all this time together, enjoying being with one another so terrible?

Of course it wasn’t always practical, and certainly the incident at the Crashdown hadn’t helped with her parents… But maybe it was just a case of getting a hold of themselves… They had proven the other week that while they might not like it, they could go without seeing one another and it was possible that this strange pull was simply a deeper form of attraction she supposed…

“I just wish I had some answers…” Liz muttered to herself softly as she finally closed her eyes. “I just wish I knew what was happening…”

The questions she had continued to occupy her mind, but her body was tired and within moments she was sleeping soundly as her subconscious again brought her back to the scene which had been monopolising her dreams for what seemed like so long now and she began to dance once more with Max…

Hey guys, thanks for all the feedback :)

Flamehair - Alex, a gentleman? - of course :D:D
tesquathisy - no M & M date I'm afriad, I'll remember that request for the future though.
timelord31 - Thanks
L-J-L 76 - Here's more :)
isabelle - I think that Diane's concern about Max being late inparticular might have stemmed from the fact she had expected him back sooner - Isabel maybe she was anticipating being a bit later, knowing she was out with Alex, but Max was with Liz, who hasn't been well recently and she did say to Isabel that she hadn't expected them to be out that late... Or then again maybe it's just motherly concern - and Max was the lucky subject this time - afterall, he and Liz are probably thought by the parents to be more serious than Alex and Isabel...they have been together longer anyway. Thanks for reading anyway, glad you're enjoying the story.

Sorry this wasn't up sooner, my plans for writing got messed up on Friday when I finally got my exam results :D:D. Hope you'll be able to forgive me, but I have to admit I didn't want to write anything after that, just couldn't seem to concentrate. Anyway, here's the new chapter, hope you enjoy it.

Thanks to anyone reading, hope you're all enjoying the story.

Chapter 23

“Are you sure you’re okay… Here, why don’t you sit down?” Maria suggested, looking over at her friend and pulling out a chair which she motioned to her friend to take. She and Liz had been working all morning as usual, and until about half an hour ago everything had been fine. Then she had seen Liz seem to stumble for a moment, and while she did recover herself without falling, the other waitress had been fussing around her friend ever since.

“I’ll be fine…” The brunette shook her head as she continued to stand at the counter. In truth she couldn’t say that she was feeling too hot actually, but admitting that would only get Maria more concerned and she was certain it was simply a case of the remains of the stomach bug she had the previous week just lingering a little longer than would be desired.

Either that, or it was her body’s way of saying she had got back into the swing of things too soon and needed a little longer to recuperate… Even if it was the latter though, Liz was determined to see out her shift since there was only maybe another quarter of an hour to thirty minutes left.

Maria didn’t look convinced as she eyed the other girl uncertainly. “I don’t know Chica, you don’t look so good you know…”

“Gee thanks…what a nice thing to say!” Liz gave a weak smile as she teased her friend.

“You know what I mean!” Sending a mock glare in her direction, Maria continued to watch her friend for another few minutes before being called over by one of her tables and leaving with some amount of reluctance.

“I’ll be fine, go, do what you need to do!” The petite waitress waved her away playfully as she moved to begin wiping down the counter once more. At least she had been able to keep away from the greasy cooked stuff today… She had told Maria that it was probably just because she didn’t have any breakfast, but that the smell of the food was making her feel a little queasy and so the two girls had adjusted their usual order of things so that Maria dealt with serving and Liz took all the initial orders and dealt with the counter.

Sighing, she ran her cloth along the length of the counter and glanced up at the clock to check the time once more. Ten minutes…

Her father had already commented on both her and Maria checking the time so much today, but both girls were eager to end the shift for they had arranged to meet the others outside for a meeting just to get everyone up to date with what was going on.

“You know I’m thinking that maybe you shouldn’t be seeing lover-boy after all today…” Maria commented as she returned to the counter. She could well guess what her friend was thinking, and she knew that the meeting was important to an extent, but she could soon tell Liz what had been said, and she had to say, her friend did not look well.

“Maria!” Liz’s eyes widened as her friend used her usual nickname for Max. It wasn’t so bad at school, but if her father of mother heard her, especially considering how they had been recently. “I’ll be seeing the rest of you too, which is the first time in a while, and I feel fine!“

“Well you could have fooled me…”

“Maria…” Gritting her teeth as she spoke, Liz forced a smile as she noticed her father emerging from the back. “Can we please save this for somewhere less crowded…?”

Her words it seemed had the desired effect, as the other waitress seemed to notice Mr Parker and as requested, dropped the subject of his daughter’s health.

Jeff however wasn’t blind, and had noticed her pale cheeks earlier. Knowing his daughter well however, he had kept it to himself for the moment rather than making a fuss, and now stepped in, taking a slightly different tact as he approached the counter and saw she looked no better. “You know I can finish up here you two… The next shift should be here any minute, so you can get off a few minutes early if you want…”

“Are you sure dad…it’s no trouble us staying ten more minutes or so…” Liz assured her father with faked brightness as she turned to face him.

“That’s maybe so, but I’m saying you can go, so maybe you should get off before I change my mind…?” He suggested lightly.

Maria nodded quickly. “Right, what’s that about a gift horse…?” She pointed out with a grin, already pulling off her apron as she thanked her boss.

“Okay, thanks then… We’re heading off to meet Max and the others, so I’ll be back later…” Reaching up, she gave her father a quick kiss on the cheek before heading into the back.

Although he had been aware of the plans which had been made, Jeff couldn’t help frowning. Going out was the last thing his daughter needed, of that he was sure. Yet if Max was involved, he was also sure that he wouldn’t be able to talk her out of it…well not without an argument anyway, and that wasn’t what he wanted… With a resigned sigh he shook his head, watching the two girls disappear through the door at the back of the diner calling after them with a belated ‘have a good time’ just as the door swung closed once more.

**********

“Okay, who’s riding with who?” Alex questioned as the group began to head out of the diner in a group.

“Well I’m guessing we already know one lot…” Maria commented with a grin as she watched Max taking his usual place beside his girlfriend and slipping an arm around her shoulder now that they were out of sight of the window.

Not that they would have been doing anything wrong to do it before – just with Mr Parker and Mrs Parker both in a protective mode it seemed, both judged it would probably be better to hold off on the P.D.A.s for a while.

Neither of the couple so much as blushed at the comment made, and it was obvious to the others they were in a world of their own.

Too much so for Michael it seemed, as the more bulky of the two remaining guys shot a look at them. “Why don’t you too just get a room…?”

That comment did get through to both it seemed from the flushed cheeks, and awkward expressions which followed. Both apologised, saying they had just been distracted a moment, and the subject returned to the original question of who was going to ride with who since the decision had been to hold the meeting up at the cave.

“Well I can’t borrow the Jetta today; mom’s already said she needs it…” Maria dropped in, knowing that was one of their usual vehicles.

“No worries, we can use my car and the jeep…” Alex responded, the others nodding in agreement.

With the vehicles sorted, all that was left was to determine who was travelling in which vehicle, which was soon decided as Maria stated that she didn’t want to travel in the jeep because it was uncomfortable in the back.

Max and Liz certainly weren’t going to object to the fact they found themselves alone, and Alex and Isabel were happy enough to travel with Michael and Maria it seemed so with seating all sorted, they set off.

To anyone who didn’t know them, they looked simply like carefree teenagers who were simply out for a ride. Past experiences however had taken that carefree attitude from them though and every few minutes, one of those in the car which was travelling behind the jeep, would look back to check that they weren’t being followed.

This was very important, because, as all were aware, they couldn’t afford to be followed to the cave. They didn’t want to be followed wherever of course, and it meant trouble if they spotted a tail regardless of where they were going, but the cave was especially important to keep secret…

If anything bad happened, they had already all decided they would meet there to decide what to do next. To have it discovered simply wasn’t an option, and knowing that they had somewhere they could hide-out if necessary for a while wasn’t a bad thing either…

If it came to it, all knew they had to be ready to leave – and not just Michael, Max and Isabel now for the others were too deeply involved – but to know that they had somewhere to come just initially was comforting, and at least they knew they had a spot to meet up if they got separated…

So it was for these reasons that the watch they kept was especially careful that day, and even as they finally pulled off the road about thirty minutes later, they didn’t stop looking around and continued to take care as they parked up the cars in a spot which was fairly secluded and walked the rest of the short distance on foot.

**********

“So really I don’t have that much to report…” Alex responded after trying to explain some of his difficulties. He shook his head apologetically and offered the file he was holding to Max. “There’s some bits which might be accurate if you want to take a look, and I’ve found a couple of possibilities myself, but really it’s just a case of wait and see…sorry…”

“No, it’s fine…” Max assured him quickly. He knew Alex had been doing all he could, and while he was eager to get the result, he was not about to push his friend. “Just tell us when you’ve got it, that’s all you can do…”

Alex nodded. “Yeah…sorry I can’t give a better idea of the time it’s going to take though, there’s been a couple of times when I thought it might be coming through, but then I get something which looks like complete gobbledygook and have to start all over again…”

Sensing that he was feeling somewhat frustrated to say the least, Isabel reached out to her boyfriend. “You’re doing a great job Alex…” She offered him a small smile as she squeezed his hand.

“Thanks…I just feel like I should be able to do more…” He murmured in a low voice, shaking his head as he looked round at the others. “So that’s where we are anyway – basically not much further on than before, unless some of my scribblings are of any help…”

Michael, who had taken the folder which had been offered now opened it, leafing through a few papers and passing some more to Max as the discussion seemed to shift to more mundane matters for the moment.

Taking the papers offered, Max looked down, beginning to scan the lines of writing. He stopped after a few moments however, as a shiver ran through his spine. Glancing down at his girlfriend who sat beside him, he noted with some degree of concern that she looked rather pale, and set down the papers in his hand as he reached out to slip an arm around her. “Liz…what’s wrong, are you okay…?”

Receiving no response, his concern jumped up two notches at least as he felt her suddenly slump against his chest.

“LIZ, CHICA…? What happened Max, what’s wrong?” Maria’s voice rose drastically at the same time as her concern.

He shook his head as he lifted his girlfriend up carefully and moved towards the exit. “I don’t know…maybe we should get her outside though…see if a bit of air helps…” Without waiting for the others to respond, he continued out of the cave and, once out in the open, laid Liz down gently, supporting her head gently to prevent it falling onto the stony ground.

The rest of the group followed soon after, all now concerned and worried about their friend, and as they emerged from the entrance to the cave, Maria immediately stripped off her jacket. “Here, use this for a pillow if you want…” She offered, holding it out as she moved over to his side and dropped down next to them.

Taking the jacket without comment, Max’s focus continued to remain on one person only. “Liz…Liz, can you hear me, can you talk to me…?” He questioned softly, pushing some hair back from her face as he looked down at her, his heart pounding with worry and fear as he saw her lying there looking so weak and helpless.

“Max…”

Noting the weakness in her voice, Maria leant over now. “Hey girlfriend, you’re not going to fall asleep on us now are you, stay with us chica…” She urged the brunette, trying to keep her voice light yet unable to completely hide her worry which would be evident to anyone who so much as glanced at her.

Isabel too had dropped down with them now, resting a hand on her brother’s shoulder as she looked across at him. “She needs you Max…”

Those words were all Max needed. Reaching out, he placed a hand over that of Liz, urging her to look at him and as she opened her eyes, the connection formed was instantaneous.

“Max…? What is it, what’s wrong with her…?” Maria questioned again as she watched him.

“I don’t know…but I’m going to find out…” He murmured as he focused now soley on the connection which had been formed, using it to look around inside Liz’s body, attempting to work out what was causing this problem. Was she sick? Hurt…?

Try as he might, he couldn’t see anything which seemed ‘wrong’… It felt, different somehow, but there were no literal problems as far as he could see, and that just didn’t make sense...

Nor could he put his finger on why it felt different – was it because other times, with the exception of the first, their connections had been made with them both aware and conscious, while this time she was drifting in and out…?

It seemed unlikely, but it just…

Suddenly, his questions were put to one side as he became aware that Liz’s condition had improved and she was regaining consciousness. Wanting to be there for her physically as she came to, he quickly withdrew, and was just breaking the connection as she opened her eyes.

“Max…” Trying to sit up, tears streamed down her face as she buried her face in his chest and clung to his shirt in fear.

“It’s okay…it’s okay…” Wrapping his arms around her tightly, Max held her close and tried to provide what comfort he could. “I’m here, I’m here…” He assured her, pressing gentle kisses to the top of her head.

The others, stood to one side, said nothing at first, giving the couple a few minutes, and generally just feeling incredibly relieved that Liz seemed to be okay now.

The fact that she had regained consciousness didn’t answer the question of why it had happened in the first place though, and after a few minutes, Michael finally spoke up, voicing the thoughts of the whole group and looking over at Max. “What the heck was that?”

Everyone turned to join him in looking at the leader of their group, but all Max could do was shake his head. He felt completely and utterly useless, he had told Maria he would find out what was wrong, and what was he going to have to say… Biting his lip and tightening his arms around his girlfriend as he felt her pressing deeper into his arms, almost as though wanting confirmation that he was there, he finally shook his head again and spoke in a low, tight voice. “I don’t know…”

Chapter 24

An uncomfortable silence had settled over the group. It wasn’t just Max and Liz who had been shaken by what had just happened clearly, it had affected the whole group… The fact that she had collapsed was bad enough, but that Max couldn’t detect anything to explain why she had collapsed was something rather more worrying which bothered the whole group. Max was after all a healer, and with the connection they seemed to have there seemed to be no reason why he wouldn’t be able to find out what was wrong.

And yet according to him, there was nothing which had stood out… Her body seemed a little weary perhaps, but not to an extent which would result in collapse… It just didn’t make sense…

“Maria, could you and Maria drive the jeep back for me…?” Max requested as he finally broke the silence. “I think probably the best thing we can do is call it a day and get back home, but I think Liz will probably be better in the car than the jeep…”

“I’m fine Max” His girlfriend looked up at him from where her head lay on his chest. “I’ll be fine in the jeep, there’s no reason to cause a fuss…”

“Chica, you just collapsed, and you look terrible!” Maria was concerned and worried for her friend, and as such was in no mood to be tactful.

“Gee thanks Maria…” Liz commented with a weak smile. “You really know how to make a girl feel good about herself…”

Her friend shook her head. “You know what I mean, and I’m serious chica, you still look really pale…”

“I’m okay, you really don’t need to carry me…” Liz protested weakly as her boyfriend lifted her easily in his arms.

Despite her reassurances, her pallor and the strength of her voice did nothing to convince the others though, and Max remained firm, shaking his head. “No, I want you to rest…I don’t know what just happened, but you’re not walking anywhere like that at the moment!”

With a reluctant nod, Liz recognised that she wasn’t going to win this one and accepted defeat. It wasn’t as though she could deny she still felt under the weather really…her legs pretty much felt like jelly, which wasn’t unusual after fainting, and her heart was thumping hard against her chest. So, instead of complaining further, she slid her arms around his neck, resting her head against his chest and giving into the pure exhaustion she felt.

The closing of her eyes didn’t escape the notice of the others, as they looked from one to the other silently before beginning to make their way back down the rocky path and towards where the vehicles had been left.

“Don’t worry about the jeep Max…I’ll drop it off outside your house later…“ Michael assured his friend as the group split and he headed towards the vehicle in question. Stopping as he reached the side of the jeep, he turned and looked back, realising his girlfriend was lagging. “Maria, are you coming?”

His girlfriend who had been walking next to Max and Liz on the way back, was now hovering at the side of Alex’s car, watching her friend as Max helped her into the back and tried to make her comfortable. Hearing her boyfriend call, she looked back at him and shook her head before turning to Max. “I want to go with Liz; three of us can fit in the back can’t we?”

Isabel saved anyone answering as she climbed back out of the passenger seat she had already settled into, stepping back from the car and motioning Maria towards it. “It’s okay Maria, why don’t you take my seat… It probably makes more sense anyway; I can drop Michael off and then take the jeep home without any need for him to walk home afterwards…” She pointed out quickly.

“Are you sure…I don’t want to-“

“It’s fine!” Isabel interrupted her friend quickly, her tone making it clear she wouldn’t be accepting no for an answer. Making her way around the other side of the car as Maria got in, she said goodbye to Alex with a quick kiss, and, after wishing him good luck with planned further work on the translation, stepped back, hurrying back over to the jeep and climbing in.

“Are you okay there now…?” Max made no move to move around and get into the car, his eyes fixed on the figure of his girlfriend as she sat now in the back.

With weak, yet genuine laugh at fact this was about the fifth or sixth time he had asked that question in the last five minutes, the brunette nodded and offered a small smile. “Yes, I’m okay…”

Hesitating a moment, it was only as a horn sounded behind him, courtesy of Michael, that he finally moved to climb in the other side of the car, his focus immediately returning to his girlfriend as he buckled his belt and Alex started the engine, following Michael as he pulled back out onto the main road and headed back into town.

What was going on? Was it connected to those flashes when she was in the cave, or the dreams they had been having…? The questioned continued to prey on his mind, especially promoted by his lack of success in finding out the cause of her collapse earlier. It worried him – he couldn’t see anything that was wrong, and yet there was something…something which he just couldn’t put his finger on, something which he just couldn’t explain…

Reaching out, Max slipped his hand over that of his girlfriend, causing her eyes to open briefly as she offered weak, and hopefully reassuring smile. “Hey…”

Returning the smile, Max leant over, pulling on his seatbelt so that he would be able to lean over, brushing his lips against her forehead softly. “We’ll find out what’s causing this Liz, we’ll make this better I promise…”

**********

“I thought you were taking her back…?” Michael questioned as Max entered his house carrying a familiar looking petite brunette.

His friend looked over in surprise, clearly not having been expecting him to still be there. “Yes, well I thought you were going home too…” He responded softly, keeping his voice low, not wanting to disturb his girlfriend who had dozed off on the way back.

“He said he didn’t have anything to do back there…” Isabel responded as she walked through from the hallway, looking over at her brother questioningly as she noted the fact that he was carrying Liz again. “Is she okay…?”

Max nodded. “Yeah, she’s sleeping this time… I did think that maybe her mom and dad would have some questions if they saw her like this…some questions which we don’t really want to answer you know…” He explained vaguely.

“Oh, right…yeah…” His sister nodded back, realising that he was probably right. Luckily, as she assumed Max had remembered, their parents were due to be out all day, so they shouldn’t be asking any of those questions themselves…

“How is she…?” Maria now walked up behind Max to join the others.

“Sleeping still…I’m going to go and lay her on the sofa…” With this statement, Max moved towards the doorway and disappeared through into the living room, leaving the others together.

“Is Alex still out there…?”

Maria shook her head slightly. “No, he said he’d rather get back and set his computer programme up again – try to get this sorted as soon as possible…” She explained as she moved forward, stepping into the now open arms of her boyfriend and resting her head against his chest with a small sigh as she felt them close now around her.

Holding his girlfriend close, Michael looked over at Isabel, knowing that she too was likely in need of some reassurance. “I’m sure he’ll call if he finds anything…he just wants to help you know…?”

Isabel nodded silently, knowing he was right. Of course Alex wanted to help… It was just after Liz collapsing earlier, she couldn’t help wishing, however selfish she knew it was, that he was there right now…with her… She knew that he needed to get back to the decoding, in order that they obtained the translation as soon as possible. If there was any chance it could help their friend, it had to be a priority, and yet at that moment in time, she just wanted to be able to feel her boyfriend’s arms around her much as Maria was doing right now… Swallowing, she took a breath and looked towards the door through which her brother had disappeared. “I’m going to go and see if there’s anything they need…”

***

“Max…?”

Tearing his gaze away from the sleeping figure of his girlfriend, Max turned to look back. “Hey Izzy…” Seeing his sister, he offered her a weak smile, and then turned away from her to focus once more on Liz.

“You okay…?”

“Aren’t I the wrong person to be asking…?” Max shook his head and motioned to the brunette in front of him. “I just wish there was something I could do to help her Izzy, but it was so weird…there was just nothing wrong…”

“Nothing at all…?”

He shook his head again in confirmation. “Nothing…”

“M-maybe I should give Alex a call, see if he’s got anything-“

“He’ll call if he has…”

Biting down on her lip Isabel nodded. She knew this of course, it was just the more she thought about everything, the more she wished that Alex were here as well as the others… She just needed to see him, to know he was there for her, she needed to-

“Izzy…?” Max waited a moment until she turned before continuing. “I know you need him right now Izzy, and I’m sorry we’re taking him away from you, it’s just-“

“You need to know… I understand Max, I do…” She finished for him softly. “I know you need to know, and I know he wants to help, I hate to think that I’m even thinking of trying to pull him away but-“

“Call him…”

Both teens turned to look down at the girl lying on the sofa. Her eyes fluttering, she reached up to rub her eyes before looking back at them. “If you need him Isabel, call him… The translation can wait a while longer…” Liz assured her friend with a small smile.

The blond shook her head however. “No Liz, what he’s doing right now is important, I know that…I’m just…” She swallowed and paused a moment before finishing in little more than a whisper. “Scared…”

She wasn’t the only one…as the silence which followed showed… Reaching over, Max rubbed his thumb over the back of Liz’s hand tracing small circles with it in what was meant to be a reassuring manner. His girlfriend smiled, but said nothing.

She just wished that she knew what was causing this – that uncertainty was probably worse than the actual way she had been feeling. She had kept insisting that it was just some stomach bug that she had picked up which was lingering, but after what had happened at the cave she was finally being forced to face the possibility that it might not have been… Her boyfriend had said there was nothing wrong…but that still left the question of why she had collapsed…

Biting down on her lip she swallowed, trying to get rid of the lump in her throat before finally looking back up. “Max…?”

His response was instant as he turned from Isabel who he had been watching to look back at her.

“C-could you maybe get me a drink of water…?” She requested softly, half of her wanting to just fetch it herself, but the other half knowing that, even if she were able to get up, the others wouldn’t allow it. “My mouth just seems really dry…”

Nodding, her boyfriend squeezed her hand gently as he rose from his seat. “Sure…I’ll be right back…” He assured her softly, hesitating a moment and looking over at Isabel questioningly to which she nodded as though to confirm she would stay with Liz as he headed into the kitchen.

***

“Is she okay…?” Maria questioned as she watched Max enter the kitchen.

Without stopping as he moved over to the sink, grabbing a glass from the drainer, max shook his head slightly. “Honestly Maria, I don’t know… Her body seemed well enough, there was nothing I could pick out and-“

“That isn’t what I mean!” The small girl interrupted as she realised he was simply going to give the same answer as he had done previously. “Is she okay…?” She repeated her question without changing her words as she drifted away from Michael to look through the doorway into the other room.

Realising that he had simply been repeating himself, Max sighed and shook his head. “Sorry Maria, I wasn’t trying to be irritating…” He set the glass down for a moment as he ran his hand through his hair desperately. “She’s scared and worried Maria, I know it but I can’t do anything about it and it’s tearing me apart…”

The desperate tone she could hear in his voice took Maria by surprise somewhat. She was used to Max, and for that matter Liz, being the strong ones in the group… To see both of them in such a state was shocking, and more than a little unnerving… Looking up, she reached out to Max. “That’s not true, you’re doing so much just by being there…” She insisted, knowing full well how much her friend needed him right at that moment in time.

“But I can’t make it better, I don’t know why it’s happening…” He protested, clenching his fist tightly.

“It’s not just about providing the answers though Max… Don’t you get that?” She shook her head at him, her voice so soft now it was little more than a whisper. She had to make him understand, she had to… “Liz just needs you to be there for her – right now, I think maybe that’s even more important than any of the answers – to know that you love and you’re going to be there for her…”

“I’ll always be there for her…if she wants me…” Max murmured, falling silent then and seemingly thinking this over as he turned on the tap and filled the glass in his hand, Max nodded as he finished, turning back to Maria with a small smile. “Thanks…”

Returning the smile she nodded back. “Anytime…” She paused a moment before adding more with another smile. “Just go be with my girl okay, she needs you…”

Her words caused another smile from Max as he headed out of the room, looking round once more before stepping through the door. “I need her too Maria…believe me I do…”

Smiling softly she nodded, watching him disappear into the other room before crossing the room and pressing herself into the waiting arms of her own boyfriend who held her close, wrapping his arms around her small frame and pressing his lips to the top of her head, giving what reassurance and comfort he could with both words and actions. “It’ll be okay…I’m here for you…”

Whether he knew it at the time or not, this was exactly what she needed to hear as she pressed closer, clinging to the one place she always felt safe and then pulling back only to look up at him as she spoke. “Thank you Michael…”

Her boyfriend tightened his hold around her body and dipped his head to kiss her before making one simple, yet sincere declaration. “I love you Maria…”

Hey guys, I'm back :)

Flamehair - thanks for reading, glad you're still enjoying the story.
tequathisy - I wrote a sweet Michael? - thanks :)
Timelord31 - thanks for reading
Sternbetrachter - Glad you liked the update, thanks for reading and sticking with the story for so long.

Okay, well all being well, this will be the penultimate chapter of this story. I'm struggling a little on getting it to end up exactly where I want it, and this last chapter is a little different to normal, not to mention shorter, but I hope you'll enjoy it non-the-less.

Thanks for reading and here's the next chapter.

~Kat~

Chapter 25

“Hey…” Max greeted Liz softly as he re-entered the room, setting the glass of water down on the coffee table and offering a hand to help her up.

His girlfriend returned a weak smile and accepted the help without objection. “Thanks…”

“Can I get you anything else…?” Max continued to hover at the side, watching her every movement and, as she reached for the glass, telling her to sit down as he picked it up and passed it over.

Despite not feeling hundred percent, his girlfriend couldn’t help being amused by his actions. “I can pick up a glass you know…” She pointed out, raising her eyebrow slightly.

Giving no indication of being sorry, Max nodded. “I know, but I want you to rest…now, why don’t you sit back and get comfy…”

“Max, I appreciate your concern, but really, stop fussing!” The attention he was giving was sweet, but really, being told to sit down, and not even being able to pick up her own drink was going a little far and was more than a little irritating…

“I’m just worried…I don’t like seeing you like this… I love you, and I hate thinking there’s nothing I can do to help…”

The irritation which had been building inside Liz seemed to melt away as she listened to his tone. It was almost impossible to remain upset, when knowing that the reason someone was being so protective was simply that they cared about you… Smiling softly, she shook her head and reached out to touch his hand. “I know you’re worried, but I’ll be okay…” She insisted, before motioning to the cushion next to her. “And as for helping…how about just keeping me company a little… Honestly, I feel a lot better now…”

Studying her appearance carefully, Max had to admit that she did look far better than she had back in the cave. The pale, sallow colour of her skin had disappeared, and her cheeks had far more colour. Her voice was stronger and the twinkle was back in her eyes. “Okay, well I’m glad then…” He finally responded, taking a seat and leaning over to kiss the top of her head.

The location of the kiss didn’t escape Liz who, as he had leant forward, had been expecting to feel his lips pressing against hers… “I’m not going to break you know…” She whispered, looking up at him.

“Huh…?” Her boyfriend seemed unaware of what he had done.

“The kiss – you haven’t kissed me properly all day. I know at first it was with my dad being there, but honestly, you’re not going to hurt me…” A mischievous twinkle lit up her eyes momentarily as she pouted. “In fact, you just might hurt me more by refusing to give me a proper kiss…I feel very deprived right now you know…”

The look on her face was so sweet, Max couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m sorry…” He responded softly, hooking her hair behind her ears as he looked down into her eyes, a smile dancing over his face now. “I certainly can’t do with you feeling deprived though…” Dipping his head, he captured her lips in hers, kissing her gently, and then more deeply as he felt her respond in like.

“Better…?” He questioned in a low voice as they both pulled back.

Liz smiled widely as she leant her head against his chest and looked up. “Much…”

“Oh, sorry guys, I didn’t realise you were…”

The couple turned quickly as Maria’s voice turned off, their cheeks flushing at the knowledge that they hadn’t heard her enter. “I-it’s fine Maria, no problem…sorry…” Max responded quickly as he slipped his arm around Liz.

“Nothing to be sorry about, and I didn’t see a thing…not that there was anything to see, and it’s just good to see you looking better, I mean Liz doing so-”

Maria’s fast-paced response seemed to ease the tension in the room and Liz laughed at her friend’s babble. “Yes, I’m feeling a lot better than you, and you have no need to feel awkward or anything, as you say it wasn’t as though there wasn’t anything to see…”

“Me, awkward, why would you think that?”

“How about the fact you were forgetting to breathe…” Michael commented with a smirk as he walked up behind her and pulled his girlfriend back into his arms.

Thowing a mock glare up at him, she extracted herself from his arms quickly and set to changing the subject. “So, Isabel wants to know what people want to eat since she’s trying to sort lunch…” She explained, focusing on her reason for coming into the room.

“Sound like a good idea…I’ll go help her…” Max moved to stand up but was immediately pressed back down into his seat. “Isabel and I can handle it just fine…” Maria assured him with a smile, adding more softly, “besides, I think you’re doing more good just being here…”

Choosing to ignore the fact that Max was basically being told to babysit her, Liz instead concentrated on the offer of food, shaking her head. “Oh, nothing for me thanks…”

Her best friend’s brow furrowed in concern. She had noticed the fact that her friend wasn’t eating much at the moment it seemed, and it wasn’t something she thought of as a good thing… “I really think you should try chica, you need to get some food into you – that might even be why you keep going dizzy and such you know…”

The brunette shook her head again. “Yeah, I know I need to eat Maria, and I will – later… Just right now I don’t want anything…” Her tone took on a pleading edge now as she turned to her friend, hoping that she would just accept without pressing any further.

“How much later? Tomorrow, or maybe the day after…” The other girl began to wag her finger in a scolding manner, much to the amusement of Max and Michael. “I’m serious chica, I know you haven’t been eating much lately…”

Liz raised an eyebrow in amusement and sighed, “Yeah, well that could have something to do with the fact that anything I do eat has been coming back up…” She muttered softly, shaking her head again. “I promise that I’ll try to eat later Maria, I j-“

“No, you’re going to try and eat now… Something nice and plain, just a sandwich of something, but your stomach has to get used to having food in it again sometime soon you know because otherwise you’re going to waste away…” Maria continued in a no-nonsense manner.

“You’re exaggerating Maria…” Her friend protested weakly despite the fact that she was already beat on this occasion. When Maria was determined like this, she knew her friend well enough to know that nothing would make her back and change her mind…

Sure enough, when Maria exited the room a few minutes later, it was with a promise to return shortly with some sandwiches as she ignored her friend’s protests and again insisted that she should eat something. Unfortunately for Liz, Maria had an ally in her desire to see her eat. As she carried a couple of plates piled with with sandwiches into the room, Max took over he campaign as he tried to coax his girlfriend to try some, even if only a little…

Although with some reluctance, the brunette therefore did eat a little, and she was in fact pleasantly surprised to find there was no sign of the nausea which had been striking her the moment she ate anything recently. In fact, if she were honest she had to admit that she felt better than she had in well over a week, and as her friend reached out to take away the plate she smiled gratefully. “Thanks…”

Returning the smile, Maria nodded. “I told you it wouldn’t be so bad. All you needed to do was take it slow and keep it simple…”

“Yeah, maybe you were right…”

Maria grinned and laughed. “Of course I’m right Chica, I’m always right!”

Her response prompted laughter from the rest of the group who was gathered in the room, and despite worries and fears, concerns and uncertainty, for a few minutes they seemed like nothing but normal teens as they proceeded to banter back and forth between one another.

**********

Late that evening found Alex sat at his computer despite Max’s words. He knew that this friend was right, the last thing they needed was for him to get sick too, and yet he just had this feeling that the translation was the key to everything, and as such, he so wanted to be able to succeed…

Liz was getting worse as opposed to better, and despite the fact that she insisted it was probably just a carry over from the stomach bug she had been nursing, Max’s subsequent examination seemed to belie that thought…

He had said there was nothing wrong…

It was possible of course that he just didn’t know what he was looking for of course, but what if he was right… No physical reason for her sickness, and yet it was impossible to deny that she was indeed sick…

Shaking his head, he reached again for the glass of water which sat on a mat in front of him as he checked on the progress of his decoding programme, and then turned his attention back to his manual attempts.

Picking up a pencil, he ran through the section he had been attempting to work on quickly, allowing a few seconds for each symbol just so that he would have a rough idea of what was there… A sense of deja-vu struck him as he scanned the lines though… The order of the symbols seemed so familiar…

Twirling his pencil in his hand, he flipped back a few pages to one of the first sections he had attempted, to no avail, that evening and blinked. It couldn’t be…

Placing the two sheets side by side, he rubbed his eyes and poured over, taking the symbols one at a time with an increasing sense of excitement. They were identical!

On a hunch, he picked up his original copy of the writing, turning to the section of writing, which had come from the third and final pod’s framework, and studying it, row by row… Sure enough, he was right – there towards the end was the same couple of lines as in the other two.

Three copies of the same text included one on each of the separate pods… It couldn’t be a coincidence; it had to be important…

Driven by this new discovery, he reached over to grab the file of papers he had built up since starting the translation and riffled through it, pulling out a few of the earlier attempts before quickly drawing up a hangman-type aid:
----/--/----/------/---/----/----/-----
-------/--------/----/----/----/---/---/-----/----/---/------/---/-------/---/---------/----/--/-/
----/-------/------/---/--/-------/----/---/----/------/--/---/----/--/-----
Working through, he fed in some of the letters he was practically certain were right, and then moved on from there, checking and double checking, adding in characters in pencil before perhaps removing them again as he thought of something better. Maybe he was oversimplifying it, but just maybe…
tr--t/-n/---r/-rea--/an-/hee-/---r/heart
/--r--n-/t—ether/the-/----/-h--/---/the/r--ht/-ath/--r/-rea--/an-/rea--t-/are/-e-arate-/--/-n--/a/th-n/-arr-er/-h--h/-an/-e/---rre-/-ent/an-/e-en/
-r--en/--/the/t--e/--/r—ht
Taking a break for a moment, he studied the page with a sense of cautious optimism. Could it be that he was really going to succeed in getting it without the computer after all that? The past attempts using the compute had helped in placing the intial letters of course, but now he was basically just playing letter games and it seemed to be working…

There could only be one letter which fitted into the e-en surely and unless there were two symbols for the same letter – something which would undoubtly mean this was complete rubbish, he could only think of two possibilities left for –n as well as an-…

Fitting in a couple more of the letters which seemed to fit, he then again sat back and studied the page:
tr--t/in/---r/drea--/and/heed/---r/heart
/--r-in-/t—ether/the-/-ill/-h--/---/the/ri-ht/-ath/--r/drea--/and/realit-/are/-e-arated/--/-nl-/a/thin/-arrier/-hi-h/-an/-e/-l-rred/-ent/and/even/
-r--en/i-/the/ti-e/i-/ri-ht
He blinked - drea-- Dreams...? he was more convinced than ever by this point that he was onto something but despite his best efforts, he was beginning to flag. More than once over the next few minutes as he tried out his theory, he found himself nodding, and finally he was forced to admit defeat for the night, deeming that he was simply going to miss things which should have been simple, packing away his stuff and turning off the computer before heading to bed.

I'm back! :D:D

Okay so I started work, found a place to stay and sorted out my internet, thanks for all the good wishes. I'm still getting used to work, and the place I'm staying isn't fantastic, but I'm working on it slowly, so hopefully that's good...

And yes, I know, I've been gone waaaay too long... I'm really sorry! RL as you all know, combined then with some major writer's block has been fighting against this getting posted, but I'm hoping it will have been worth the wait.

Timelord31 - well here you go, thanks for reading
tequathisy - sorry, I may have mislead in what I said, there's one more chapter in THIS story - this one, but this story was always intended to be part of a series, so not everything will be cleared up here, and there will be more...
isabelle - I do believe you're right about the puzzle  well done... As for tying it up, same goes as I've explained above, some of it will be, a lot won't... As for your theory about what Liz needs to do...well, guess you'll have to read to find out hehe
flamehair - yes, one more, and sorry you can't figure out the puzzle, but read on to find out a little more...
uw51 - I didn't know you were reading hun :) Thanks for the note and the best wishes though, it means a lot. I just hope this won't now disappoint...
ultimatepickupline - welcome to the story :D:D well, seems you found it at the right time, cos I'm back with the final chapter. Hope you enjoy it.
83AlienAngel - you were right as far as you got  thanks for reading, and giving it a go.

I'm going to admit to you all that the last chapter wasn't exactly what I wanted...and neither is this... The way the translation, or at least part of it, is now being turned out probably comes across as something of an anticlimax, and I'm very sorry... When I first started writing this, I didn't give much thought to how I would eventually have him work it out, and the rough copy I've been working from did have another version, but that was even worse than this. I just really hope this next won't be a let down, I've tried really hard, but writing hasn't been coming easy to me recently. The other night I started again though, and this, amongst other things, came out... I really hope you will enjoy, and thanks so much for reading everyone.

Kat

Chapter 26

Okay, so what did he have…? Alex pondered as he studied the text in front of him. He could be completely wrong of course, logic dictated that the coding would be far more complicated than he had made it out to be with his ‘hangman’ style technique, and yet there was something about the message as he studied it again that made him think it was right…

Now if only he could solve the rest of it, at least he’d have something to give the others when they met…

Sighing, he picked up his pencil, underscoring certain areas of the message as he picked on the things he was pretty certain were correct.

realit-

He blinked - That had to be reality, right? Which meant that it had something to do with the dreams…

He studied the text again for a moment, scratching his head before looking up to check the time. Max had called early in the morning to ask about a meeting around lunch time, and it was coming up to ten now… The group were set to be meeting at his house on this occasion of course – an excuse of studying being the only way that Liz and Maria could get out of working, although in truth he wasn’t sure there was much point in them coming at all…

Other than the fact that it meant that Liz wasn’t working of course – something which had to be a good thing in his mind. Right now, he thought she should probably be tucked up in bed, but of course since she was supposed to be all better after her stomach bug now – because if she wasn’t Nancy likely wouldn’t let her out of the house – he very much doubted she was…

More likely in fact, his friend would be dealing with the morning rush in the Crashdown, making great apologies to her father for leaving him short staffed in the afternoon, and wearing herself out…

Sighing, he shook his head, unable to get rid of the nagging feeling that there was something really not right there. It could of course be that she had come back to school too soon after recovering from the bug – Max had said there was nothing ‘wrong’ after all… But would tiredness really make her pass out like she had done yesterday…?

It was as though he was missing a huge part of the puzzle, and as his gaze was drawn once more to his puzzle written on the paper, he couldn’t help thinking that if he could work that out, it would be a good start…

There was plenty more to the pages of writing that he had been trying to decipher for some time now, but that little passage, if only he could work it out, would be an incredible help he was sure…there might be more than one symbol that was meant for a letter – if the writing even followed an alphabet as such, but at least he would have one then, and maybe others would follow…

And any bit of information that might help to shed light on the strange dreams that Max and Liz had spoken about, had to be a good thing…

Glancing at the clock, he realized that time was getting away from him. Only another half hour or so until the others would be arriving in all likelihood, and he wanted to check what progress his computer based translation was making on the complete version of the text too. Pushing the pad in front of him away, he reached to wiggle the mouse, switching on his monitor and typing in a password after which the screen filled quickly with line after line of symbols, with certain letters interspersed…

**********

An hour later saw Maria and Liz, chatting animatedly on the couch as Alex walked back into the room, accompanied by Isabel and Max. The first two girls had turned up a short while ago, having walked over from the Crashdown, and had quickly settled themselves in the living room at Alex’s request, to wait for the others.

“I’m fine, I j-“ Liz broke off from what she was saying as a shadow fell over her and she looked up just in time to receive a kiss on her forehead from her boyfriend. “Hey…” She smiled softly at him.

“Hey yourself…” Max returned in an equally soft tone, his eyes full of concern and questioning as he took the seat Maria vacated as she stood up.

“I’ll leave you two to it…” Maria told them with a small smile, as she stood up and walked away to find her own boyfriend who she assumed would have travelled to Alex’s with the siblings.

“Thanks Maria…” Max smiled gratefully at the other girl, before returning his attention to his girlfriend as he slid an arm around her shoulders. “So, how are you feeling today…?”

***

“Give them a little time!” Maria insisted as she tried to keep Michael from wading in. She understood that he was eager to start, and it was for good reason perhaps, although from what Alex had said to her already while waiting for the others to arrive, there didn’t seem to be much to say…

But Michael didn’t know that…and sharing exactly how far they were would be a good thing… Alex had said that fresh eyes might be helpful with some of it, so that was fine…but not right now… First, she thought, Liz and Max deserved a little alone time…

Michael would probably argue that they had nothing but that at the moment, but she had seen them yesterday, both had been shaken, and while she might try to insist everything was okay, she very much doubted that her friend was over it completely. And bottling things up, hiding from them did people little good, so perhaps talking to Max might let her admit how she was feeling, and maybe he would even be able to work out what was wrong this time…

His lack of answers yesterday was ‘the’ thing which really bothered her she had to admit. Over the time she had known him, and found out about the secret he carried, she had grown somewhat used to Max always having an answer, and now, when he had admitted he didn’t, she felt a little shaken to say the least…

And if she felt shaken, she couldn’t imagine how Liz would be feeling… No, better to wait a little while to talk, and let them have a little time first… She turned to look back at her boyfriend, grabbing his arm and suggesting they got a drink, as she led him firmly out of the room.

***

“I’m alright, honest…”

Max looked down at his girlfriend, his finger tracing the line of her chin as he looked into her eyes with concern. “Are you sure…?”

Smiling softly, she nodded, pushing his hand away with hers as their fingers threaded through one another. “Yes… It’s just a bug you know, I probably took it a little too quickly after being off sick…”

Her boyfriend listened, nodding silently. In his mind however, he was questioning her explanation. Was that really it…? Could it be something so simple? He wanted to believe it of course, although he hated her being sick, but the fact that he hadn’t sensed anything when he had tried to connect with her worried him…

Of course perhaps it just meant that he wasn’t supposed to be able to heal something as simple as a cold…or stomach flu…? It wasn’t impossible, it wasn’t as though they knew much about his powers, but somehow the explanation just didn’t feel right to him…

But why else wouldn’t he have been able to sense what was wrong…? The question had kept him awake most of last night, and being here with her now didn’t diminish his worries…

“Max, I’m fine…” Seeming to sense his unease, Liz reached up, pressing her lips against his gently and pulling back. She smiled reassuringly. “See, I’m not breaking…” She joked softly.

***

“Do you think she really is okay…?” Isabel questioned softly as she glanced through the doorway to where her brother and his girlfriend were talking. She had heard Liz’s reassurances of course as she walked in, and she had known to expect them, but she couldn’t forget the way her friend had looked when she collapsed the day before. Her skin had been so pale, the colour gone from her cheeks…

Reaching over as he read the concern that he shared, Alex gave her hand a quick squeeze. “I’m sure she is…” He offered her a small smile. “After all, she’s got me on the case, and Max, what more could she want?” He responded in a joking manner, trying to keep things light and encouraging in tone and manner.

“Yeah, guess you’re right, she’s a lucky girl…” His girlfriend couldn’t help but smile. “Just like me…”

***

“Okay, are we going to get down to business or what?”

Maria hurried after her boyfriend as he walked into the room, making it perfectly clear he had had enough of waiting… “Michael will you-“

“No Maria, it’s fine…” Max, who was stood with Liz at the doorway now, having obviously heard the comment, shook his head. “Michael’s right, it what we came here for right…?” Sliding an arm around his girlfriend as he spoke, he looked down at Liz briefly, to check she agreed, and smiled as she nodded slowly, motioning into the living room.

“Come on, let’s go and sit down for a bit…”

***

“So I don’t really have much more than I did yesterday…” Alex finished awkwardly, shaking his head back and forth as the group gathered around now and he tried to explain his progress. “Except for this…” Handing copies of a sheet he had prepared earlier that day, he waited until everyone had, or could see one, before continuing. “I’m pretty sure it’s a single phrase, and it occurs repeatedly throughout the text…”

“How certain are you about the letters that have been fitted in…?” Maria looked up from the paper to ask.

He shook his head in response. “Honestly, not very, for all I know it doesn’t even follow the alphabet, but I started with a few bits that the computer had already agreed on repeatedly, and went from there… I’ve probably assumed way too much, and it might not even be anything close to right…”

“I’m sure it’s great…” Max assured him with a grateful smile, taking a look himself as he tried to put in the missing pieces…

Maria meanwhile had turned her attention back to the page, her brow furrowed in concentration, her mouth opening every so often as though speaking to herself for the moment, presumably going through possible words which were possible… After a few moments, she looked over at Alex again. “This bit here…” She pointed. “That has to be reality right…?”

The young man in question nodded. “Well that’s what I was thinking this morning, but as I say, the whole thing might be completely made up, it’s amazing the sort of links you can find when you look hard enough you know…” He shook his head. “It was probably a bad idea to do it this way, there’s no reason why I should be able to make it work, but I noticed the passage and I had to do something… When it’s the whole text there’s way too much to work that way of course, and dotted amongst there might well be other symbols meaning the same thing as others, but I worked on what we had I guess…”

Nodding slowly, Maria read through again. She wasn’t so sure about it being way off. It made too much sense for that… “Okay, but just say for the moment that it is reality, let’s see what we get then okay…?”
tr-st/in/y--r/dreams/and/heed/y--r/heart
/--r-in-/t—ether/they/-ill/sh--/y--/the/ri-ht/-ath/--r/dreams/and/realit-/are/-e-arated/-y/-nly/a/thin/-arrier/-hi-h/-an/-e/-l-rred/-ent/and/even/
-r--en/i-/the/time/is/ri-ht
Sticking in the extra letter where applicable, the group were soon able to stick in a couple of other possibilities…

“B here?”

“And don’t forget u here!”

“O there!”

Alex dutifully filled in the missing gaps with the letters suggested, growing more and more excited as he noted that it actually appeared to be making sense. Could such a simple approach really have done it?

As the message slowly began to emerge, Liz found herself more and more certain that this wasn’t just Alex getting it wrong… This made sense, much more than she would like to admit, and she was beginning to feel as though a huge part of the puzzle was beginning to fall into place. It was like nothing that she would ever have imagined though, could she really be thinking this, could this really be what it meant…?

“W?”

As another letter was fitted into the text, Max felt Liz tense against his body. Looking down, he couldn’t help noticing that she seemed pale. His first thought was that she was unwell again, but the way her eyes were scanning the page seemed to suggest something different. “Liz…?”

The brunette swallowed as she looked up, finding the whole group looking at her with concern now. She shook her head and offered a weak smile. “I-I’m okay, honest…” She tried to assure them, wondering whether to say where her mind was leading her, maybe it would be best just to find out first, to check…

“Don’t you give me that Elizabeth Parker!” Maria scolded her best friend, wagging her finger. “We’ve been friends long enough for me to know when you’re not telling the truth, and this is one of those times… Now – what’s wrong?”

Biting down on her lip, Liz looked down again, reading through the message one more time, a few more letters falling into place, although she didn’t bother pointing them out. “I-I think I know what’s going on…” She commented softly, hardly even daring to look up, a part of her unable to believe she was actually saying this.

Her boyfriend, reached out, wrapping his hand around hers as he nodded, knowing that this had to be something major from the way she was acting. “Go on…”

A deadly silence fell over the group as each of them waited to see what she would say, and any remaining colour drained from Liz’s cheeks, hating being the centre of attention almost as much as she feared was she was about to say.

“Well…?” Michael raised an eyebrow impatiently, his face screwing up in pain a moment later as he received a well-aimed kick from his girlfriend for his insensitivity.

Taking a deep breath, Liz looked around, turning back to Max as she spoke, drawing strength from him as she felt the reassuring grip of his hand around hers. “I-I think I might be pregnant…”
Trust in your dreams, and heed your heart. Working together they will show you the right path for dreams and reality are separated by only a thin barrier which can be blurred, bent and even broken if the time is right.
