Liz snuggled deeper into the pillows propped behind her as she adjusted the position of her book.

Though it was late, nearly midnight, she was caught up in the tale before her. This was her time, and she relished it … twilight hours when she lost herself in her latest exploit before she lost herself in sleep.

He walked so quietly, she hadn't heard him at first. Then she felt the give of the mattress as he climbed onto the bed. Looking over, she saw him gazing at her lovingly.

"Hi handsome, are you ready for bed?" she crooned as she closed the book and set it aside.

No sooner had she changed her position, he was crawling onto her lap. He settled himself lengthwise along her chest and began a steady, rumbling purr. She watched him watching her as she stroked his long, silky fur.

He was exceptionally beautiful. Large, over twenty pounds, and muscular with a sleek black coat. The only white on him were his whiskers and the tips of his toes. His eyes were his most striking feature. They were mesmerizing, a dazzling gold, full of warmth and perception. There were moments, like this, when she stared into his eyes and felt he was far more intelligent than the average cat.

Although she’d only had him a few weeks, she’d already fallen under his spell and was hopelessly attached. She still couldn’t believe her luck in finding him. She'd come home late one night and there he’d been, sitting on her porch as though he belonged there. When she’d opened her door, he’d sauntered in with complete confidence that he was home. And he didn’t just walk, he sauntered, gliding where he went as though his feet were on rails.

Since he’d claimed her as his human, he was her constant companion. He followed her everywhere she went. He wasn’t necessarily a lap-cat though. While he was always with her, he was usually content to sit by her side, as though guarding her. Except at night when she went to bed, when he insisted on sleeping on her chest or curled around her head.

She’d yet to think of a name for him but, he filled a void in her life. An empty hole left when Max died. With this new "man" in her life, she was just a little less lonely. He gave her a reason to look forward to coming home. Maria razed her about it constantly, telling her she was too young to become a "cat lady", but she didn't care. She'd come to love this regal feline and appreciated his company. Hypnotized by his warmth and the soft vibration of his purr, Liz soon fell asleep.

She dreamed of happier times. Times when Max was still alive. Times when the two of them spent their days planning for a future that neither knew was limited.

She awoke feeling rested and content. Stretching, she felt the fur collar she'd acquired during the night start to rumble. "Good morning handsome," she smiled into his watchful eyes. "I had the best dream last night."

The cat seemed to smile at her … and winked.
