“Max, I’d like you to meet Theresa Harding, she’s your replacement,” Dave Harrison introduced the small blonde next to him.

“Theresa this is Max Evans, the newest partner here.”

Max eyed the woman in front of him. She looked about the same age as him, her hair was extremely curly and her body curvy.

“It’s nice to meet you,” Max smiled politely and held out his hand.

Tess couldn’t believe the hunk standing in front of her. Her eyes immediately went to his hand to see if there was a wedding band and she almost jumped for joy in front of Max when she found there wasn’t.

“Max if you don’t mind I’ll leave Theresa in your hands to show her around,” Dave smiled before he disappeared.

“So Theresa…” Max begun.

“It’s Tess actually,” Tess quickly corrected him.

“Ok, well welcome Tess,” Max smiled.

“Thanks. I’m really excited to be here,” she admitted.

Max spent the morning showing Tess around the office and started to brief her on a few of the cases that she would be taking from him.

“So you must be excited about being a partner,” Tess smiled at Max from across the desk.

They were sitting in Max’s newer and bigger office and there were a few photos on his desk but Tess was unsure yet if any of them were serious girlfriends or potential competition.

Tess Harding was an only child and she was used to getting what she wanted. Her parents had been fairly well off and her mother had died when she was little. Her father compensated his long hours and their continuous moving by buying Tess everything she wanted, including a place at Yale Law.

What Tess learnt though was the most prestigious and decent law firms actually expected you to do well at school, something Tess learnt too late.

She knew she was lucky to have scored the job at Harrison. Dave Harrison was an old friend of her fathers and once again Daddy had come to the party for her. Tess wasn’t a stupid girl by any means she just preferred to concentrate on things that are more important.

“Yeah,” Max replied.

“How long have you worked here?” She asked then.

Max looked up from his file then, “About 5 years,” he said.

“Wow,” Tess whistled she couldn’t imagine working anywhere for that long.

“So are you married Max?” She asked then bluntly.

Max looked up again startled by her blunt and extremely personal question.

“I’m sorry that was really rude of me,” she blushed and apologised.

Max smiled at her politely, “No its ok, no I’m not married.”

“I’m sorry, it’s just that I’m new in town and I don’t really know anyone.”

“Well people here are very friendly and you seem nice so I’m sure you’ll have no trouble finding friends.”

“Yeah,” Tess smiled.

***

Liz popped herself up on one elbow and looked over at Max.

They were at his apartment tonight and it felt somewhat strange for Liz to be sleeping there.

“So what’s your replacement like?” She asked.

Max literally groaned at the mention of Tess.

“That good?” Liz laughed at his response.

“She’s interesting,” he admitted.

“She?” Liz asked surprised.

“Yeah Theresa Harding, not the person I would have picked but….”

“What’s wrong with her?” Liz asked.

“Well firstly she has no idea what she’s doing. She graduated from Yale but her grades were shocking, I’m surprised she graduated at all. I can’t work out why Dave would have hired her to replace me.”

Liz shared a confused look with Max. She knew Dave Harrison and he took his work very seriously.

“Did you say Harding?” She asked.

“Yeah,” Max nodded.

“Wasn’t one of the men that was at that dinner last year a Harding?” Liz asked.

Liz was thinking back to a dinner she had agreed to go with Max to at the last minute. It had been the most boring night for both her and Max as they sat around and listened to a group of pompous men talk about their accomplishments while their wives talked about their latest shopping spree.

Max thought back to the night too.

“Yeah I think you’re right,” he replied as he remembered the bald man Liz was referring too.

“Well that explains the job,” Liz grinned.

Max groaned again, “Great, that’s all I need. I get stuck babysitting an underqualified daddy’s princess.”

Liz giggled again. Her giggles faded when Max’s hand slid onto her naked abdomen.

Max looked at her thoughtfully.

“We should know next week,” she informed him.

Max couldn’t hide his smile as he thought about the possibility that his child cold be growing inside of Liz at that very second.

He knew it was doubtful that things would work that quickly for them but he couldn’t help the small shimmer of hope.

“What do you want, a boy for a girl?” He asked Liz then.

A smile immediately fell over Liz’s face. “Well both eventually, but I’ll be happy with what ever God blesses us with.”

“Me too,” he agreed.

“I know it’s unlikely I’m pregnant but I can’t help but hope I am,” Liz voiced to Max as her hand covered his over her abdomen.

“Our life’s going to really change when you are,” Max mused then.

“Yeah, we’ll have to come clean with our families,” Liz added.

It was easy to put off telling anyone while nothing was going but they both knew that eventually they would have to tell there families everything and just hope that they could accept the decision they had made.

Liz knew Maria and Isabel would be upset that she hadn’t told them but her conversation with them the other day only reinforced that she was right to keep this between her and Max only.

“Yeah I know,” Max agreed.

He turned and smiled at Liz then before he leaned in and kissed her on the forehead, a gesture which he had used for years. But for the first time Liz longed for the kiss to be on her lips instead of her forehead.

“Let’s get some sleep we both have a big day tomorrow,” Max suggested.

Liz agreed with a nod and rolled over. Soon Max was spooning behind her, his large arm wrapped tightly around her and they both slipped into a peaceful sleep.

***

Liz was woken the next morning by the sound of the phone. Disorientated she reached for the bedside table and picked it up.

“Hello?” She said huskily.

“Hi, who’s this?” The voice on the other end asked.

Liz shook her head to clear her thoughts. Her eyes opened and she realised that she wasn’t in her own bedroom, and she remembered she was at Max’s.

“Who’s this?” She asked instead of answering the question.

“Isabel, Max’s sister could you please put him on,” she snapped. Since when was Max dating someone, and why hadn’t he told her. There were a million thoughts going on in Isabel’s head.

Liz looked at the clock and groaned. It was only 7am and it was too early to have your head snapped off by Isabel.

“Take a chill pill Iz, it’s too early to be freezing people,” she replied before leaning over and shoving Max.

“Liz?” Isabel questioned.

“Uh huh.”

“Wha…” a disorientated Max asked as he woke up.

“Your sister,” Liz mouthed to him and held the phone up.

“Yeah it’s me Iz,” Liz replied to Isabel’s question.

“What are you doing at Max’s?” She asked.

Max’s eyes went wide and he shook his head to indicate he didn’t want to talk to her.

“Sleep over,” Liz replied to Isabel.

“You guys still have sleepovers?” Isabel asked horrified and Liz giggled.

“Yep, here’s Max Iz I’m going to go take a shower,” she said before throwing the phone in Max’s lap and slipping out of the bed.

Liz had no intention of answering Isabel’s questions this early.

Max picked up the phone as he started at Liz, who walked completely naked to his bathroom.

“Max!” Isabel yelled.

“Hi Iz,” Max finally answered after Liz had disappeared into the bathroom.

“What’s wrong with you?” She asked.

“Well for a starters you woke me up,” he replied.

“I figured you’d be up by now,” Isabel replied.

“Well normally I would be but Liz and I were having a bit of a sleep in,” he answered defensively.

Liz had been so tired the past couple of days so he had set his alarm back so she would sleep a little longer.

“Aren’t the two of you a little old for sleepovers?” Isabel said then.

How did Max ever expect to find someone if he was acting that way with Liz.

“Nope,” Max grinned as he remembered how much better their sleepovers were these days than they were when they were younger.

“God anyone would think the two of you were sleeping together,” she said sarcastically and Max’s eyes went wide.

“But I know that’s not happening, Liz made that perfectly clear the other day that she wasn’t interested in you,” she sighed.

“Look Iz, no offence but was there something that you wanted?” He asked.

Right not he wanted to join Liz in the shower and to do that he needed to get Isabel off the phone.

“Oh I was ringing to invite you over for tea tonight,” she said.

“Sounds great,” Max smiled.

“Liz is invited too,” she added then.

“Great,” Max smiled.

“Ok well about 7.30 ok and bring a bottle of wine.”

“Yes Isabel,” Max rolled his eyes.

“Cheerio,” She said before hanging up.

Max threw the phone down and ran towards the bathroom. Liz was just turning off the water when Max opened the curtain.

“Can I convince you to stay in a little longer?” He asked.

Liz laughed, “Yep.”

Max stepped into the shower and pulled Liz against his body, bending down to kiss her neck.

“What did Isabel want?” She asked.

“We’re going for dinner,” he mumbled just before his hand cupped her breasts.

There wasn’t time for words after that as Max took her gently against the wall of his shower.

“So how long do we have to wait?” Max asked Liz when she walked out of the bathroom after taking the pregnancy test.

Liz was only a few days late but she couldn’t resits buying a test and bringing it home.

“Three minutes the box says,” Liz replied.

“Ok,” he nodded.

“Remember this isn’t full proof,” Liz said to him, “I’ll still have to go to the doctors and get a blood test to confirm it.”

“I know,” Max was doing his best to contain the butterflies in his stomach. In the next few minutes he would find out if his world was about to be turned upside down.

“How long has it been?” Liz asked nervously.

Max looked at his watch, “2 minutes,” he answered.

“Let’s go wait in the bathroom,” Liz said standing up and walking off.

Max followed her and when he got there Liz was turned away from the basin where the test was laid out.

“It’s been three minutes,” he informed her.

When Liz didn’t move he took a step closer, “Do you want me to look at it?” He offered. He knew how nervous he was so he couldn’t even begin to comprehend the way Liz was feeling.

“Ok,” Liz agreed so Max picked up the stick and studied it.

“What’s it supposed to look like?” He asked as he stared at the blue line.

“Pink for positive and blue for negative,” Liz replied as she bit down on her bottom lip and waited for Max to tell her the result.

“It’s blue,” he breathed out,

“Oh,” Liz frowned all her hopes falling.

“I’m sorry,” Max whispered as he put the test down and took Liz into his arms crushing her against his chest.

“It’s ok we’ll keep trying,” he assured her.

“I know,” she nodded against his chest, it didn’t stop it from being disappointing or hurting and Max understood that too.

“So you’ve been quiet lately,” Michael commented as he and Max shot some hoops.

“Yeah I been busy with work,” Max replied.

Michael and Max liked to get together weekly for a game of one on one but over the past couple of months they were both finding it hard to clear there schedule.

“How’s that working out?” He asked.

“Ok,” Max sighed, “It would have been better if they had hired someone a little more competent,” he added. “I thought I was going to offload most of my cases to make room for the all the additional ones that Dave wanted me to take, instead I’m pretty much taking three quarters of the work with me because Tess can’t do it.”

“Tess?”

“The replacement,” Max said as she shot a perfect three pointer into the hoop.

“Tell him she sucks and you want someone else,” Michael shrugged.

Max snorted, “Yeah if only.”

“What? I thought you were a partner now so doesn’t that mean you should get a say in who works there?” Michael asked.

“I guess so,” Max shrugged, “but I have a feeling that Dave wouldn’t be very receptive of firing Tess.”

“He shagging her?” Michael asked.

Max rolled his eyes, that was typical Michael. “Not that I know of but I’m pretty sure she’s the daughter of one of Dave’s good friends”

“So the phrase it’s not what you know but who you know applies here?”

“Pretty much.”

“Is she hot?” Michael asked then.

“What’s that got to do with anything?” Max frowned.

“Is she?”

“Yeah I guess she’s ok,” Max shrugged.

Tess was a petite blonde and he supposed that she was attractive. He didn’t find her attractive but she seemed to be getting a fair bit of attention from most of the men in the office, including the married ones.

“Well consider it scenery,” Michael shrugged.

“I’d rather look at a brick wall and have someone competent to do the job and then I’d have more time to shoot hoops with you.”

“Yeah well that doesn’t help me out much, since we’ve had Adam I don’t feel like I have a life anymore,” he admitted.

“You make it sound like a sentence,” Max pointed out.

“Look man, I love him and having a child is the best thing I have ever done but it changes everything.” Michael replied. “Not that you’re going to have that problem anytime soon,” he added.

“Yeah right,” Max said looking away feeling guilty for keeping secrets from his brother.

***

“Honey I’m home,” Max called out as he let himself in Liz’s apartment and placed down his briefcase.

Liz’s head popped up from the lounge and she smiled tiredly.

“Hey,” she said. “I figured you were working late and I wasn’t going to see you,” she said.

Max smiled sheepishly. “Sorry I should have called,” he said.

“No, its ok you don’t have to tell me your every move,” Liz replied seriously.

“I know,” he said as he walked towards her.

Liz lifted her feet so that Max could sit down but instead he moved so that he was lying behind her and kissed her cheek then her neck.

“Long shift?” He asked.

“Yeah,” Liz nodded. She had finished a 12 hour shift only a few hours earlier and she had 8 off until she had to do it all over again. On top of that, the hospital had been mayhem that day.

“How about you?” She asked. It was almost 9 and that was late for Max.

“I have so much work,” he groaned. “Tess just isn’t getting anything.”

“You should talk to Dave,” Liz said.

“I’m going to have to if it doesn’t get better because at this rate I won’t be around even when we do manage to make a baby,” he said.

“It will be ok,” Liz yawned and Max chuckled.

“Did you eat?” She asked.

“Yeah I had a sandwich at the office,” he answered.

“Good,” she said before yawning again.

“Come on, lets go to bed,” Max suggested.

“You staying?” She asked hopefully.

“Of course,” Max replied kissing her neck gently.

“Good,” she whispered.

Max helped her off the couch before turning off all the lights and then led her into her bedroom.

“I didn’t realise how tired I was,” she whispered.

Max pushed his jacket off his shoulders before walking towards Liz who was struggling with her shirt and scrubs.

“Here let me help you,” he said.

Liz nodded and held her hands in the air and let Max peel the shirt off her body before he pushed her scrubs down over her hips.

Liz unclasped her bra then and also discarded her panties.

“Do you want pyjamas?” Max asked trying to avoid looking at her naked body. He was already aroused but he knew she was too tired.

Liz shook her head. “No I like feeling your skin against me,” she replied as she climbed into bed.

Max quickly undressed to his boxers and was just about to get into bed when Liz stopped him.

“Take those off,” she ordered.

“Liz,” he groaned.

“Please,” she pleaded.

Max couldn’t resist her plea and kicked the boxers off. Liz licked her lip as she spied his hard cock.

“Please don’t do that,” Max pleaded.

“I’m sorry,” Liz yawned again causing Max to chuckle.

“You’re too tired so let’s just go to sleep,” he suggested moving to spoon behind her.

“Only if you promise to wake me up by doing something very naughty,” she said hopefully.

“That’s a promise,” Max agreed.

***

Liz was startled out of sleep the next morning by the sound of her own voice moaning. Her eyes flew open just in time to see Max’s grinning face as he looked up at her from between her thighs.

“What are you doing?” She whispered huskily.

“If you don’t know then I mustn’t be doing it right. Let me try again,” Max replied as he ran his tongue down her thigh until he was once again inches away from her pussy.

“Oh God,” Liz groaned in anticipation.

It hadn’t been a dream. Max really had been thrusting his tongue in and out of her body.

Liz’s legs widened as Max dived and began to feast on her again. He alternated between using his finger and his tongue to thrust in and out of Liz until she was crying out his name like a mantra.

“Oh God I’m coming,” she told him.

Max added a second finger inside of her and pumped them a few times before he felt Liz’s walls contract around them causing her juices to flow from her body. He guzzled her juices up greedily before climbing up her body and kissing her soundly.

“Good morning,” he whispered.

“A very good morning,” she moaned as she felt his hard cock settled against her opening which was still sopping.

Max dipped his cock inside her gently before quickly pulling it out.

“That felt so good,” Liz moaned.

“You feel so good,” he replied with a whisper before dipping inside of her again.

“Fuck me Max,” Liz begged them. She was so horny and now she wanted Max to really give it to her.

“Yeah?” He whispered before he took a nipple into his mouth.

“Ah huh,” Liz nodded, “I want it really hard,” she added then causing Max’s eyes to snap to hers.

“Take me from behind,” she grinned then pushing Max off her body and moving to all fours.

Max groaned as his cock got harder.

“Please Max,” she begged wiggling her ass in his face.

Max moved behind her in a flash and entered her in one smooth thrust.

“Of fuck Liz,” he cried out.

He rammed in and out of her and Liz met every one of his thrusts moaning and crying out over and over again.

“You feel so good, your cock feels so big,” she said.

“Oh yes Liz,” Max cried, her words just turning him on more. “You’re so hot,” he told her. “So fucking sexy,” he added with a growl as he picked his pace up once again.

Forcing Max back Liz rose until she was straddling him. Max cupped her beasts as Liz’s hand weaved behind her to old onto Max’s neck as they continued to fuck each other recklessly.

“I’ve never seen you like this,” Max groaned. This was a side of Liz he had never seen before, so extremely sexy. He had never had better sex in his life than what he was having with her right this second.

“I’m so horny for you,” she replied in a whisper. She had wanted him so badly the night before but nowhere near as much as this morning after waking up with him between her legs.

“God if I didn’t have to go to work I’d fuck you all day baby,” he whispered.

Liz cried out louder this time, partly from the way his cock thrust inside her and party from the endearment that had fallen from Max’s mouth.

Dropping a hand from one of Liz’s breasts Max began to rub her clit.

Liz threw her head back against Max’s shoulder.

“Yes Max….ahh yes!” She cried out.

“Oh fuck yes, ahh Liz, so fucking hot…” Max moaned as his orgasm got closer and closer.

“Give it to me Max,” she begged then, wanting him to fuck her harder and faster.

“Drop back to your knees,” he ordered and Liz quickly complied.

Max braced Liz’s hips with his hands and thrust inside of her as hard and fast as he could until Liz was screaming out his name in bliss.

“MAX!!!!!!!!”

As Liz’s orgasm rocked her body Max gave in to his own, blowing his seed deep and hard inside of Liz as he also screamed her name.

“LIZ!!!!!!!!!”

They both collapsed exhausted onto the bed. Liz immediately fell back to sleep and after a quick glance at the clock which indicated that it was still early, Max pulled the sheet up over them and snuggle in beside Liz before also following her into sleep.

Hi everyone, firstly thank you so much for your wonderful feedback, some of your comments had me laughing my ass off. Secondly, i'm sorry that i didn't give you another update, i totally meant to i just got sidetracked.

Anyway Enoy!

Twelve

It had been a month since Tess had started at the firm and things weren’t getting any better for Max.

What Max didn’t know was that Tess was using the work as an excuse to spend more time with him, saying she didn’t understand or needed help.

“Tess I explained this to you last week,” Max sighed in frustration.

“I know but could you just go over it with me one more time?” Tess asked as she jutted out her breasts in hope that Max would notice her.

“Ok,” he agreed pushing aside the file had had been working on to go over Tess’s work with her again.

***

Liz was bored and feeling antsy sitting at home doing nothing so she decided to surprise Max and take him to lunch. Things had been different between them since the morning in her bedroom where sex had taken on a completely new meaning for them. They couldn’t keep their hands off each other and Liz loved it. She felt closer to Max than she ever had.

Liz stopped at the front reception desk.

“Hi I’m here to see Max Evans,” she told the receptionist.

“One moment please,” she replied politely before picking up the phone and dialling Max’s extension.

“Mr Evans just has someone with him but if you would like to go through and take a seat he shouldn’t be too long,” she explained and Liz nodded before making her way towards Max’s office.

This wasn’t her usual visit to his office but she knew he now had a bigger office so she wasn’t completely sure where she was going until she saw Max’s secretary.

Kim smiled when she saw Liz approaching.

“Hey Liz,” she greeted.

“Hi Kim,” she replied.

“Is Max expecting you?” She asked then.

“No I just thought I’d see if he was busy for lunch,” Liz explained.

“He just has someone with him but I’ll let him know you’re here.”

Liz watched as Kim approached Max’s office and couldn’t help but take a step closer so that she could see through the opening of the door. A few seconds after Kim entered the room Max appeared behind her and his face lit up when he saw Liz.

“What are you doing here?” He asked as he approached her.

“I thought I’d see if you were busy for lunch,” she shrugged.

“Well I’m not but I’ve got Tess with me at the moment do you mind waiting 5 minutes?” He asked as he referred to his watch to see what the time actually was.

“That’s fine,” Liz said.

True to his word, five minutes later Max emerged from his office and Liz’s attention as peeked as a small blonde followed him.

“Thanks for all your help Max,” Tess said.

“No problem,” Max replied.

“Do you have plans for lunch?” She asked then stopping suddenly and pushing her breasts into Max’s chest. “I’d love to take you out to lunch to thank you for everything that you’ve done for me since I started,” she added.

Max looked away awkwardly and his eyes instantly connected with Liz’s.

Max had no other option but to take a step back to gain some space between him and Tess. “Thank you Tess but that’s not necessary,” he replied.

“I know that but I would really like to,” Tess pushed.

Liz couldn’t sit by and watch the blonde tart throw herself at Max a second longer. It was obvious that she was making Max uncomfortable even if Liz didn’t already know how annoying Max found her, so she rushed to his rescue.

“Are you ready Max?” She asked politely.

Both Max and Tess’s attention snapped towards Liz.

Max smiled in relief.

Tess frowned at her recognising her from a picture Max had on his desk of the two of them.

“Yeah I am,” Max smiled patting his back pocket to make sure he had his wallet. He intended on taking Liz for a nice lunch to thank her for saving him from an awkward situation.

“Liz this is Tess Harding, she took my position here,” Max explained then. “Tess this is Liz Parker.”

“Hi Tess,” Liz smiled politely.

Tess managed to force a smile on to her face long enough to reply. “Hi Liz.”

“Well if you can excuse us Tess, I’m taking this beautiful lady to lunch,” Max smiled.

Max took Liz’s hand in his own then and led her towards the elevator. Once inside Liz looked back at Tess who was scowling as they disappeared from her sight.

***

As soon as Max and Liz disappeared, Tess made a beeline to Max’s secretary.

Kim was busy typing but looked up when Tess cleared her throat.

“Hello Tess can I help you with something?” She asked. Tess wasn’t her boss and she wasn’t expected to work for her but she also knew that it wouldn’t do her any favours being rude to her. The truth was Kim couldn’t stand the woman. If she spent half as much time on work as she did on flirting with Max then she would be very successful.

“Actually yes. Who was that woman Max just left with?” She asked.

“That was Liz Parker.” Kim replied.

“Yeah I know her name but who is she to Max?” Tess asked.

Kim looked around to make sure no one was listening before she responded.

“I’m not quite sure how to answer that,” she said.

Tess rolled her eyes, “Is she his girlfriend?” She snapped.

“I don’t think so. Her picture has been on his desk as long as I’ve worked for Max and she’s calls the office regularly.”

“I see,” Tess frowned.

“But then there have been other woman too…” Kim answered.

She knew she shouldn’t be talking about her boss’s personal affairs but Kim was a gossip and she had been dying to share this information with someone for a long time.

“So as far as you know they’re just friends?” Tess checked again.

“I think so,” Kim replied with a nod.

“Good,” Tess smirked before she turned and walked off.

It wouldn’t have mattered if Liz Parker was Max’s girlfriend, Tess didn’t intend on letting a small detail like that get in the way of what she wanted.

***

“Thank you so much,” Max said to Liz as they finally were free of his office building.

Liz laughed, “Someone should tell that woman those things are dangerous,” Liz teased referring to Tess’s breasts.

Max laughed along with her. “You know you’re going to have to say something to her,” Liz pointed out.

Max looked at her confused. “She has the hots for you Max,” Liz pointed out.

“No she doesn’t,” Max shook his head.

“Yeah Max, she does,” Liz said as she stopped in the middle of the street and looked at Max seriously.

“What am I supposed to say?” Max asked.

“That you’re flattered but not interested,” Liz responded but then stopped when she realised something. Max had never said he wasn’t interested.

“Unless you are…,” she whispered surprised by how much the thought irked her.

Realising that they were having the conversation in middle of a busy street Max grabbed Liz’s hand again and pulled her into a small restaurant.

Liz was quiet as they took a seat and the waiter handed them menus and took their drink orders.

“You’re right I’ll talk to Tess,” Max broke the silence eventually.

Liz looked up at him then, “You didn’t answer my question,” she said.

“Which one?” Max asked.

“Are you interested in her?” Liz snapped.

Max frowned at Liz’s tone, “Why are you so upset?” He asked.

“Maybe because the man I’m trying to have a baby with is flirting with other woman,” she replied. All of a sudden Liz’s appetite had disappeared, her stomach was churning and she began to look around for the rest room.

Max immediately noticed the change in Liz too. Her face had gone deathly pale, but worse than that, her mood was all over the place.

“Are you ok?” He asked concerned.

“No,” she shook her head and rose to her feet quickly.

Before Max could say anything, she had rushed off to the nearest restroom.

It was ten minutes before she returned and Max was worried sick. It had taken all his will power not to follow her and barged into the woman’s toilets.

“Sorry,” she whispered as she sat back down.

“Don’t be silly, are you ok?” He asked.

“I don’t know where it came from but all of a sudden I just felt terrible,” she explained.

“Do you want me to take you home?” Max asked concerned.

Liz smiled. “No I feel better now except for the fact that I’m starving,” she admitted.

“Are you sure?”

“Positive,” Liz smiled. “Let’s order.”

***

After lunch, Liz headed back to her apartment. Once inside she decided to take a nap hoping to kick the fatigue that had settled over her.

Liz’s plan for a nap though was short lived when almost immediately after she laid down banging began next door.

“No…” she moaned and covered her head with a pillow but even that wouldn’t down out the sound.

“Great, new neighbour,” she grumbled giving up her plan to sleep and headed into the living room turning on the TV.

Soon the banging changed to loud machinery though and no matter how high Liz turned the TV she couldn’t hear it.

“For God’s sake shut up,” she yelled at no one in particular just in the general vicinity of next door.

The noise went on for another three hours before Liz couldn’t take anymore. Storming out of her apartment, she went next door and knocked hard on the door until someone finally answered.

“Who’s in charge here?” She instantly demanded.

The trade’s guy looked instantly surprised and alarmed.

“I live next door and do you realise that you haven’t stopped with all this noise for the past 4 hours?” She asked.

“Um well yeah I’m trying to get the work done,” he answered.

“Are you in charge?” She asked.

“Yep,” he asked with a grin. God this chick was hot all riled up he thought.

“Kyle Valenti,” he held out his hand. “I just bought this place.”

Liz instantly froze. “You live here?” She asked.

“Yeah,” he grinned. “You must be my new neighbour,” he said.

“Yeah I guess I am.” Liz said. She attempted to smile then. “Liz Parker,” she offered.

“Well it’s a pleasure to meet you Liz,” Kyle said.

“Liz are you here?” Max called out as he let himself into Liz’s apartment.

It was relatively dark inside and when Liz didn’t answer Max realised she wasn’t home. Walking to her fridge, he checked her roster and found that she wasn’t scheduled on, like he thought she had the next two days off. It was one of the reasons why he had pulled himself away from the pile of work on his desk to come home. To spend some much needed time with Liz.

It had been a month since the day they had lunch and during that time Max felt like he had barely seen Liz. Between his long hours at the office getting though his own workload as well as helping Tess with hers, and Liz’s shift work, they just never got much time together.

There had been a few nights here and there which had been spent in an effort to create the baby they were both longing for but not anywhere near enough time as far as he was concerned. Liz had been so good about it though, never pressuring him about how much time he spent in the office. He was glad that she hadn’t realised that a lot of though hours were spent with Tess.

Max wasn’t sure why the idea of him being interested in Tess had upset Liz so much. The truth was they hadn’t talked about dating other people since they had started to try for a baby. Max knew that eventually they would have to. Not because he planned to date anyone but because obviously it was going to be an issue.

Max looked around the apartment again and sighed. He didn’t know if she should wait for her or not. He had no idea where she could be. He knew he could call her but in the end he decided to wait for a while. He turned on the television and soon he was dosing on Liz’s lounge.

Max woke with a start when he heard the front door opening and laughter following. He sat up yawning and looked towards the door where Liz was entering followed by a man he had never seen before.

Liz startled when she caught sight of Max sitting on the couch. Her hand went to her heart and she closed her eyes. “Jesus Max, you scared the shit out of me,” she smiled.

“Sorry,” he whispered with a frown as he wondered who the guy was with Liz.

“Hi,” he said to Max.

“Oh Max, this is Kyle Valenti. He bought the unit next door,” Liz introduced. “Kyle this is Max,” she explained. Liz had told Kyle all about Max so she figured that was the only introduction he required. While Kyle knew about Max, Liz hadn’t had the opportunity to tell Max about her new neighbour.

After their initial meeting, Kyle had invited Liz in for a coffee and he showed her the work he was planning to do on the unit. Liz learned that Kyle was a police officer so he worked shifts like she did. After that, it had been easy for them to understand each other. Liz knew how hard it was to get things done when your hours were all over the place and Kyle knew how hard it was to sleep.

Since then they had become friends. Over the past month while Max had been working more and more, Liz had found herself knocking on Kyle’s door and inviting him for dinner. She had gotten used to not eating alone and it had been hard when she had to.

“Nice to meet you,” Max said. “I didn’t realise anyone had moved in next door,” he said.

“Yeah I’ve been in for the part month. I’m still renovating but hopefully that will be over soon.”

“I second that,” Liz chimed in.

She was glad that Max and Kyle were finally meeting.

“Well I should go,” Max said then feeling awkward for the first time at being in Liz’s apartment.

“Why?” Liz frowned worried that he was going to go back to work.

“I interrupted your night,” he said.

“Actually I was just coming in for a coffee but I should go because I have an early start in the morning,” Kyle spoke up.

“Are you sure? I can still turn the kettle on?” Liz asked.

“Positive,” Kyle grinned.

Liz walked Kyle to the door then aware of Max’s eyes burning a whole in her back.

“Thanks for tonight,” Liz told him. When Kyle had asked her the day before if she wanted to see a movie she had jumped at the chance. It had been so long since she gone to see something and just the thought of another Friday night home alone depressed hr.

“No problem,” Kyle replied. “Night.”

When Liz shut the door and turned back towards the kitchen she found Max frowning at her.

“I didn’t think I’d see you tonight,” she said.

“You didn’t tell me you were dating,” Max said instead of responding to Liz’s comment.

Liz walked to the sink and filled the kettle. “I’m not,” she answered her back to Max. “Just like your not.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Max asked annoyed.

Liz turned and leaned against the sink then.

“You spend every night at your office with Tess,” she shrugged, “you’re obviously eating dinner with her because you don’t with me,” she added a hit of bitterness in her voice.

“I’m working,” Max snapped.

“Right,” Liz replied.

“I thought you understood?” Max said then.

Liz sighed, the last thing she wanted to do was argue with Max. “Kyle’s my new neighbour and he doesn’t know anyone in the area. It’s been nice to have someone to hang out with,” she said.

Max’s anger immediately drained away when he realised what Liz was saying. He was neglecting her. Not just as the potential father of a baby but as her best friend.

He approached her slowly as she dipped her tea bag into the hot water and wrapped his arms around her waist.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered his face in her hair.

He made a promise to himself then that things would change.

Liz nodded.

“I’m not dating Tess,” he said then.

“What you do is your business,” Liz shrugged.

Max took a step back at her tone.

“Is that the way you really feel because your tone and actions are saying something completely different,” he said.

Liz turned around then and looked at Max. “If you want to date her then maybe we should re-think this baby thing,” she admitted.

Max’s eyes went wide. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“You’re not serious?” He whispered.

“I am,” Liz admitted.

“I know that this whole baby thing is going to change our lives,” she whispered. “I don’t want you to miss out on being with someone that you care about or could have a future with because of me.”

Liz had no idea how long it would take for her to get pregnant. If they put there lives on hold wait for it then life could pass them by, she didn’t want Max to resent her for it one day. But at the same time, she couldn’t be with Max trying to create a child when she knew his heart was with someone else.

It killed her to say it but she had thought a lot about it over the past month.

“You think that if I have a baby with you I’ll be alone for the rest of my life?
He asked.

“No,” Liz shook her head. “I think that you’re not sure this is what you want,” Liz said. “I think that you’re attracted to this Tess and would probably go out with her but you’re not because you said you would have a baby with me,” she continued. “I think that’s why you’ve been pulling away over the past month.”

Max’s mouth fell open in shock.

“I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that I don’t find Tess attractive because I do,” Max said. “But if you think that my idea of the perfect woman for me, or my future is a woman who has to rely on her father to get her a job then I don’t think you really know me,” Max snapped.

Liz sighed, and was about to speak when Max interrupted her.

“I’m not finished,” he said. “I’m sorry I’ve been gone so much this past month but that’s what happens when you are promoted, I told you this. It’s also not my fault Dave Harrison hired a gorgeous airhead to replace me which means I have twice the amount of work. I am however sorry that you think that I don’t want this baby as much as you do and that I’m 100% positive I want to have a baby with you,” he said.

Liz smiled a little then. “That’s good news,” she said.

Max nodded, glad that he had gotten everything out the way he wanted too.

“Because I think I’m pregnant,” Liz whispered.

“What?” Max’s heart stopped as he asked the question and waited for the answer.

Liz grinned then, “I missed my period and…”

“Did you buy a test?” Max asked excitedly.

Liz nodded.

“What are you waiting for?” He asked.

“You,” she smiled. “I was just waiting for you,” she told him.

***

Max couldn’t believe how nervous he was as he waited for Liz to take the test in the bathroom. When she came out, he jumped to his feet.

“Two minutes,” she smiled at him.

“Good, great,” he said.

They looked at each other awkwardly then.

“Can I ask you something?” Max asked.

“Yeah?”

“What would you have done if I had told you I was having second thoughts?” He asked.

Liz shrugged. “I have no idea,” she whispered.

“Was that you final test?” Max asked then.

Liz looked up at him confused. “You’ve been testing me,” he whispered. “This whole thing with Tess, keeping your distance over the past month, not telling me about your neighbour,” he pointed out.

Liz’s mouth opened to object but she closed it when she realised to some degree he was right. Subconsciously she was testing him.

“Not more testing,” she whispered looking up at him. “I have a feeling in a few seconds your about to be stuck with me for a really long time.”

Just as she finished her sentence the egg timer in the bathroom went off.

“God I hope so,” Max grinned as he offered Liz his hand and led her into the bathroom.

“Do you want to do it?” He asked her.

Liz nodded and reached for the test. She stared at it for a few seconds before looking up at Max.

“So?” He asked.

“It’s positive,” she whispered in awe.

“Positive?” Max asked.

Liz nodded.

“We’re pregnant?” Max grinned.

Liz nodded again as a smile covered her face.

“We’re pregnant,” she squealed.

Max picked her up off her feet and spun her around in his arms. “We’re pregnant,” he cried.

Looking in from the outside Max and Liz seemed like a happy and loving couple. It would surprise someone that didn’t know them to find out that they were only friends who recently decided to have a child together. Kyle Valenti was one of those people. Liz had told him that her and Max were only friends but meeting Max for the first time, and feeling the tension in the air when he was around Kyle knew that there was more going on that simply friends.

On top of that, it seemed as though Max and Liz had barely left her apartment all weekend.

***

“When should we tell people?” Max asked as he lay in bed with Liz wrapped in his arms. His hand had been falling to her abdomen since finding out that his baby was growing inside of her. He had expected to be happy and excited when Liz finally got pregnant but what had surprised him was the immediate love he had felt for the baby growing inside of her.

Liz smiled as she covered his hand. “Well I should get it confirmed by the doctor first,” she explained.

“So you just make an appointment?” Max asked unsure.

“Yeah I can go to my doctor or I could see someone at the hospital,” Liz shrugged.

“Can I come?” Max asked hopefully. He wanted to be a part of every aspect of the pregnancy with Liz, another thing that he wanted to discuss with her. Thoughts had been running through his mind all day.

“Of course,” Liz smiled happily. “I’ll make an appointment first thing Monday morning and call you and let you know,” she assured him. She was glad that Max wanted to be involved.

“So after that do we start telling people?” Max asked.

“Well I figure at best I’m maybe a month pregnant,” Liz said. “I think it would be a good idea to at least wait until we’re a few months along.”

“Are you worried about telling people?” Max asked.

“Yes and no,” Liz smiled. “I know that our parents are going to be shocked,” she admitted, “but mostly I have no idea what to expect and it would be nice to get my head around everything and make sure everything is alright before we go through all the dramas of telling our family what we’re doing.”

Max nodded completely understanding. He had barely gotten his own head around the fact that he was going to be a father let alone explaining it to other people.

“That’s actually something I wanted to talk to you about,” Max decided to broach then.

“What’s that?” Liz asked.

“What are we doing?” He asked her then. “I mean I know we’re going to be parents and we’re committed to doing this together,” he explained, “but what we haven’t talked about is what it means for us.”

Liz frowned slightly but nodded that she understood.

“I mean I want to be involved in this pregnancy every step of the way. I also want to be there for our baby every day,” Max told her.

“I know you’re going to be a great dad,” Liz smiled.

“I hope so,” Max smiled kindly. “I guess I’m just confused about how it’s all going to work.”

Liz reached out and touched Max’s chest gently then. “I’m not sure that it’s going to be easy but I think we can make it work. We live pretty close…”

“Maybe it would be best if we moved in together?” Max blurted out.

Liz looked at him surprised.

“That way I could be here for you when your morning sickness starts and when you need your feet rubbed,” he grinned.

Liz couldn’t help but smile at his words. “Sounds nice.”

“Really?” Max asked hopefully.

Liz hesitated for only a second before she nodded. They were practically living together now, well except for the last month anyway.

“But I think we should move into your apartment,” Liz added then.

“I agree,” Max nodded.

Max’s apartment was 2 bedrooms where as Liz’s was only one and a half and the half was used as a library and study. Max on the other hand had a spare bedroom as well as larger living space with meant he could corner of a section for a desk and computer. It would be more practical for her to move in with Max.

“I can move my bedroom stuff into you spare room and maybe some other small items and I could put the rest in storage,” Liz said. “I could rent this place out and then I wouldn’t have to worry about paying my mortgage when I’m off work.”

“You know I’ll support you when you can’t work,” Max frowned.

“I know but I don’t expect you to pay my mortgage,” Liz shrugged. Liz knew that things in her life would be changing drastically. Her hours at the hospital would have to change and she would have to speak to the CEO about her pregnancy.

“Just know that you don’t have to worry about money at all,” he said as he leaned in and kissed Liz’s cheek.

Liz ached at the feel of his soft lips against her skin and ever so slowly she turned and leaned in until her own lips touched his.

At first, Max seemed surprised but it didn’t last long and soon he was kissing her softly. His had rose and cupped her cheek and he caressed it softly.

Liz smiled when they pulled back from the kiss.

“That was nice,” Max whispered.

“Yeah,” Liz agreed blushing before quickly looking away.

“Do you think it will be hard to go back to just being friends?” Max asked then.

Liz nodded. She knew she would ache for Max for a long time to come. She would miss having him lying naked next to her every night and sharing the intimacy of making love with him.

Max looked away awkwardly. He was so used to touching Liz is such an intimate way. He knew every curve of her body now and didn’t know how he was supposed to ignore them now.

“Maybe…” Liz started but then quickly stopped.

“What?” Max asked.

“Nothing,” Liz whispered feeling stupid for even contemplating bringing up her thoughts and those were that she didn’t think they should stop. They weren’t with anyone else so why couldn’t they be together.

“No tell me,” Max said gently, reaching and cupping her face and turning it so that she was looking at him.

“It’s just that I’m going to miss you so much,” she admitted.

“Yeah me too,” Max agreed.

“Do you think that maybe we could back off slowly?” Liz suggested then.

Max looked at her confused. “Don’t worry that sounded stupid.”

“No I think I understand,” Max said before he leaned in and kissed her lips to show that he did in fact understand.

“Thank you,” Liz whispered.

“What for?” Max asked.

“Being you,” she smiled.

***

Liz and Max held hands as they sat across from Liz’s Doctor.

“Well congratulations Liz, Max,” she smiled at them. “You’re definetely pregnant.”

Max wasted no time turning to Liz and smiling before kissing her lips.

“That’s great, thank you,” Liz replied when the kiss was over.

Doctor Lee just smiled at the couple in front of her.

“I want to schedule you for an ultrasound if you have time so we can see how far along you are,” she suggested then.

“We can see our baby?” Max asked shocked.

Doctor Lee nodded with a grin. She was used to seeing happy fathers like Max Evans all the time. Although she didn’t specialise in Obstetrician she had enough patients over the years.

“Now?” Max asked.

“If you both have time,” she smiled.

Liz looked at Max to check but he was too busy grinning like a fool.

“That would be great,” she agreed.

“Ok well just follow me and we’ll get you set up in one of the back rooms. I’ll need you to drink a fair bit of water for me too if we’re going to be able to see the baby,” she explained.

After setting them up with a gown for Liz and water, she left Max and Liz promising to be back in fifteen minutes.

“I can’t believe we’re about to see our baby,” Max whispered.

“I know,” Liz agreed between gulps of water.

“It just makes it all so much more real,” Max said.

“I know, we might be able to hear her beating heart and everything,” Liz told him.

“Her?” Max smirked.

“It’s better than it,” Liz shrugged.

“Could we find out what sex the baby is?” Max asked then. He didn’t know if Liz would want to know but he was curious.

“It’s too early,” Liz replied. “Maybe in a few months?”

When the doctor rejoined them, Liz and Max were waiting anxiously. As she applied the gel Max settled in the seat beside Liz and held her hand tightly.

“Ok,” Doctor Lee started as she rubbed the device over Liz’s flat stomach and watched the screen.

Soon they heard a faint rapid beat and Liz gasped. “Is that…?”

“Yep that’s the heartbeat,” she agreed.

“Max can you hear that?” Liz turned to him.

Max nodded at her, his eyes wide. “It’s so faint,” he whispered.

“That’s because the baby is so little,” Doctor Lee answered.

“Ok,” she said then and pointed to the screen. “Can you see that?” She asked them.

Max and Liz both nodded. “That’s your baby,” she smiled at them.

Liz clutched Max’s hands tightly then. “Our baby,” she whispered tears in her eyes. Max also had tears in his.

Doctor Lee paused then. “Do either of you have a history of twins?” She asked then.

Liz looked up surprised. “Why?”

“I’m actually a twin,” Max answered then.

Doctor Lee smiled then and pointed back to the screen, “Because there is your other baby,” she told them.

“Oh God,” Max gasped.

Liz’s face had gone completely pale. “Twins?” She questioned. It had never even occurred to her that she could have twins.

“It appears your at least four weeks long Liz,” she informed them then but Liz was barely listening still rocked by the news.

“Liz are you ok?” Max asked.

Liz nodded mutely and Max chuckled.

“I think she’s in shock,” Max told the doctor.

“Twins?” She asked again and Max nodded.

“Wow,” she blew out.

“Everything looks fine Liz,” Doctor Lee said then. “Would you guys like a picture?” She asked then.

“Definetely,” Max grinned.

“I’ll write you a prescription for some vitamins Liz. You’ll need to come back for monthly check ups and if you’d like I can refer you to Obstetrician.”

“Do we need one?” Liz asked worried that something was wrong.

“No not necessarily but you can never be too careful, and with twins…” She trailed off.

“Ok, that would be great,” Max spoke up not wanting to take any risks with Liz or his children.

Doctor Lee left them alone then so Liz could get changed back into her own clothes. Max could tell that Liz was still reeling from the news.

“You ok?” He asked.

“Twins Max,” she whispered.

“It will be ok,” he told her.

Liz nodded, “I know I just wasn’t expecting it,” she said.

“I know but we’re having two babies Liz,” he whispered as he pulled her against his chest.

“I love you,” Liz whispered then. It rolled off her tongue so easily that she didn’t even know what she was saying. She rested her head against Max chest, her eyes closed not even aware of the surprise evident on Max’s face.

Max didn’t know what she meant. Sure, they had told each other they loved the other before but it had always been in mushy friendship moment, or after a fight. This had felt so completely different and why did Max hope deep down in the pit of his stomach that she meant something a whole lot more by it?

Fifteen

Second Month into the Pregnancy

Liz jumped out of bed as quickly as possible and rushed towards the bathroom only making it in time to spill the contents of her stomach inside.

It had been like this for the past 2 weeks. Every morning, normally at the same time, Liz was rocked with morning sickness. Usually it lasted about 2 hours but it was by far the worst 2 hours of Liz’s day.

“You ok?” Max asked as he pulled her hair back from her face and reached for a damp wash cloth for her face.

Liz shook her head. “I knew that pasta was a bad idea last night,” she said.

Everything she ate lastly always ended up being a bad idea. The other morning Maria and Isabel has insisted on breakfast before a day of shopping. Liz had to excuse herself on several occasions to visit the bathroom and had been barely able to hide how ill she was from her two friends.

“This really sucks,” she grumbled as Max helped her off the bathroom floor.

“I know,” he sympathised. He had been with Liz every step of the way.

He stayed at her apartment every night so he could be there every morning to pull her hair back and wash her face while she was sick. He was serious when he told her that he wanted to be there every step of the way. He worried sometimes about the stress of having twins might have on Liz’s body but she kept insisting that the sickness was just all part of normal pregnancies.

“It’s only eight so why don’t you go back to bed for a while?” Max suggested knowing she didn’t have to work until twelve.

“Yeah good idea,” Liz agreed.

“I’ll make you some tea and get you some toast,” he informed her.

It was a ritual. The only thing Liz could keep down was toast and some light tea. It got her through to lunch time where she would be so hungry that she would eat twice as much as normal. A few of her co-workers had already noticed and commented on it.

Liz was also gaining weight very quickly. The doctor had informed her that she would show much earlier than a normal pregnancy because she was having twins, which meant that Max and Liz knew they wouldn’t be able to keep the pregnancy a secret for very much longer. Liz’s clothes were already too tight around her stomach and in another month she knew none of her jeans or skirts would fit at all.

“Thank you,” she smiled.

“You’re welcome,” Max replied as he left the room heading for the kitchen.

He hadn’t forgotten the day in the doctor’s office when Liz had told him she loved him. He had thought of nothing else for weeks now but he still hadn’t worked out how to broach the subject with her. It had also forced him to think very hard about his relationship with Liz and what had come out of that was a lot more questions like:

What did Liz really mean when she said, “I love you”?

Did she want something more than just friendship with him?

Would something more than friendship between them work?

Looking at the clock Max cursed. He would have to get his ass into gear if he didn’t want to be late to work again.

***

Tess watched the elevator waiting for Max to show up for work.

It hadn’t escaped anyone’s notice that his hours had changed drastically in the last month. He refused any request to stay back and work late with her, or any offer for her to help him. He was in after 9 and left about 6 and everyone in the office was talking about it.

As soon as the elevator opened and Tess saw him she straightened her clothes, jutted out her breasts and casually began to walk towards him.

“Morning Max,” she grinned as he approached.

Max looked up from the papers he was reading while walking, “Oh, hi Tess,” he replied quickly before looking back to his work and walking straight past her.

Tess stopped and frowned. The white blouse she wore was completely see through and she had the laciest white bra she could buy on and Max hadn’t even batted an eyelid. Inside she was fuming but she was also determined to find out what was going on with him.

***

Max looked up as someone knocked on his door.

“Hey Dave,” he greeted his boss.

“Hi Max are you busy?” Dave asked.

Dave Harrison thought a lot of Max but he had also noticed his new partners 360 change. It wasn’t like people were complaining about Max or the work wasn’t being done, he was just worried.

“Nothing that can’t wait. Come in,” Max waved him in.

Dave shut the door as he walked into the office and took a seat across from Max.

“How’s everything going?” Dave asked.

“Good,” Max smiled.

“You don’t have too much work?” Dave queried.

“I have my cases under control now; it wasn’t easy with all the work I’ve had to carry over.”

“Carry over?” Dave asked.

“Previous cases that Tess just couldn’t handle,” Max replied honestly.

“How many cases?” Dave asked then.

Max sighed, “Almost all of them,” he told him. “Tess just wasn’t getting it. I wasn’t confident about leaving some of our valuable customers in her hands.”

“I’m sure she could have handled it,” Dave argued.

“With all due respect Dave, she can’t,” Max told him. “I took the liberty of moving some of the projects around and now Tess is handling some of the simpler things while freeing up Laura and James,” he explained.

“But I hired Tess to take over your job,” Dave said.

“I know but she doesn’t have the experience or the capabilities to do it,” Max told him.

“I see,” Dave frowned.

“I’m not sure want you want to do about that but right now things are working. The work is getting done and now I have the time to get on with the cases you wanted me to handle,” Max continued.

“I’m glad,” Dave nodded. “Is that why your hours have changed so drastically?” He asked then.

Max was shocked that Dave had noticed.

“Well I was working 12 hour days last month trying to get Tess up to speed. When I realised that was never going to happen I was doing it to get the work done so I could hand it over to Laura and James. I never intended to work those types of hours,” Max explained.

“Good because that is too long,” Dave told him.

“But you’ve obviously noticed that I’ve been starting late for the past few weeks,” Max continued.

“Yes I had,” Dave said.

“Well some circumstances have changed in my personal life.”

Dave’s eyebrows raised in curiosity.

Max sat back in his seat contemplating whether he should tell Dave. “Liz is pregnant,” he blurted out.

“You’re the father?” Dave asked curiously. As far as he knew, Max and Liz were only friends.

“Yeah I am,” Max grinned.

“Well congratulations. I didn’t know the two of you were dating,” Dave smiled.

“Thanks,” Max nodded deciding to leave out the part that they weren’t. He hoped Liz wasn’t upset that he told Dave but he figured it was easier to tell him the truth rather than make excuses.

“How she’s feeling?” He asked then. He and his wife had 2 children, grown and in college now but he remembered impending father hood well.

“She’s got pretty bad morning sickness at the moment which is why I’m getting in a little late. It hits the same time every morning and I don’t like leaving her until I know she’s ok,” Max replied.

“Understandable,” He agreed.

“I hope that’s ok?” Max said then.

“Of course,” Dave grinned. “And if your work load gets too much let me know. Liz and the baby should be your priority at the moment.”

“Thank you Dave, but actually there are babies,” Max smiled.

“Twins?”

“Yes,” Max nodded.

“Wow, you certainly are going to have your hands full soon,” he chuckled.

“Yes I will but I want you to know that I won’t let my work suffer,” he promised.

“I know Max, that’s why I made you my partner because you’re so God damn good at what you do,” Dave smiled.

Max smiled proudly. “Dave would you mind keeping a lid on the news?” He asked. “We haven’t even told our families yet…”

“Of course,” Dave agreed.

“Thank you.”

“Well I’ll leave you to get back to it,” he said then as he stood up. “See you later Max and make sure you tell Liz I said congratulations, I hope to see her soon.”

“I will,” Max continued to smile.

Max was still smiling when Dave finally left so he picked up the phone and dialled Liz.

“Hello,” she answered.

“Hey babe,” he greeted.

“Hey,” Liz’s voice perked up a little.

“How are you feeling?” He asked.

“Better,” she replied. “I kept the toast down so that’s helped a lot.”

“Good,” Max said. “Listen I told Dave the news this morning.”

“You did?” Liz said surprised.

“Yeah he was worried about why I’ve been getting in late.”

“You didn’t get in trouble did you?” Liz asked worried.

“Not at all. He was ecstatic for us,” Max said happily.

“Good,” Liz grinned as she pat her stomach where her children were growing.

“I think we should speed up telling everyone,” Liz blurted out then. “I’m getting bigger by the second here.”

Max chuckled, “You are not.”

“Ok but definetely by the week, I had to buy a pair of size 2 jeans the other day that are never going to fit me because I didn’t want Maria to realise I’d put on weight,” she grumbled.

“You’ll get into them some day,” Max told her knowing that she would look as beautiful as ever once the babies were born.

“Ok then, which family first?” Max asked.

“Mine,” Liz answered. “I’ll call mum and dad and invite them for dinner on the weekend.”

“Sounds good. Look I better get back to work but don’t over do it ok?” Max said.

“I won’t. Bye,” Liz replied.

“Bye,” Max said before he hung up the phone a smile still playing at his lips.

“Are you sure you’re ready for this?” Liz whispered to Max as he was helping her bring the food out.

Her parents were sitting at the table and in a matter of minutes Liz was going to tell them about the baby.

“As ready as I’ll ever be, at least I know your father doesn’t have a gun with him to shoot me,” Max replied.

Liz giggled causing her parents to look up at her.

“It’s so wonderful that after all these years you and Lizzie are still friends, Max,” Nancy Parker commented as they sat down at the table across from them.

“Yeah I’d be lost without her,” Max replied.

“This looks wonderful Liz,” Jeff commented then.

Liz had spent all afternoon slaving away in the kitchen preparing a roast like the ones her mother prepared most Sunday nights when she had lived at home. She hoped that they would enjoy the meal so much they would be too distracted to get worked up about the fact that she was unmarried, single and about to be a mother of twins.

“Thanks,” Liz said proudly.

They all ate their food while sharing amicable conversation about their jobs and lives and when their meals were finished Max helped Liz clear away the plates.

She prepared coffee for them all then and brought out a cheese cake she had bought while she tried to calm her nerves.

“So sweetie you’ve been very quiet all night is everything all right?" Nancy asked her daughter. Although she had joined the conversation throughout the night, Nancy could tell that her daughter had other things on her mind.

“Actually I have some news to share with you, well rather we do,” Liz replied and gestured to herself and Max

“Ok,” Jeff said.

“I know this is going to come as a bit of shock to you both and I want to start by telling you that Max and I have thought long and hard about this and what we were getting into before we did it…”

“Oh my God you’re finally together!” Nancy cried with a bright smile.

Max and Liz looked at each other surprised. “That is it isn’t it?” Jeff asked when he saw their faces.

“Not exactly,” Liz replied.

“Oh I’m sorry sweetie I just assumed that was it when you said you and Max…” Nancy began to apologise.

“We’re having a baby,” Liz blurted out.

She took a deep breath of relief that she had gotten it out. She hadn’t intended to just blurt it out like that but she knew how long her mother could go on if she had let her.

Now the Parkers were both sitting there in shock.

“Excuse me, can you repeat that?” Jeff Parker asked.

“Congratulations you’re going to be a grandfather,” Liz smiled deciding on a different angle. .

“You and Max are having a baby?” Nancy asked.

“Yes,” Liz smiled.

“Together?” she asked.

“Together,” Max spoke up.

“But you’re not a couple?” Jeff asked then.

Max looked over at Liz then, she had her mouth open about to respond so Max quickly spoke up before she could.

“Yeah we are,” he said.

Liz turned to Max with wide eyes. “Max!” She whispered furiously, “What are you doing?” She was aware that her parents could see her if not also hear her but she didn’t really care right now.

Max turned so that only Liz could see his face, his eyes were apologetic as he spoke, “It’s better this way,” he mouthed.

It hadn’t been until he’d seen the look on Jeff Parker’s face that he realised what everyone was going to think. They were never going to accept the decision they had made to have a baby as best friends so in that moment he had decided that they didn’t need to know. They could pretend to be a couple and break up down the track if they needed to.

“I thought you said you weren’t dating?” Nancy asked clearly confused.

“What Liz meant was that that wasn’t what she really wanted to tell you.” Max answered.

“So you’re having a baby?” Jeff blew out.

“Twins actually,” Max smiled proudly.

Liz was still sitting next to him shock wondering what the hell he was doing.

“Wow,” Nancy blew out.

“Well this is certainly a surprise. We didn’t even know you were dating and now you’re pregnant,” Jeff said.

“I know but we’re very happy about it,” Liz finally spoke. “Max is going to be the best dad and I couldn’t imagine doing this with anyone else,” she said her eyes locked with Max’s to convey she truly meant everything she was saying.

“I feel the same way,” Max replied reaching over and taking her hand before bringing it to his lips and kissing it gently.

“Oh look at the two of you, so in love I don’t know how I didn’t see it before,” Nancy cooed.

Liz blushed bright red at her mothers observation but Max just grinned.

“So are the two of you planning on getting married?” Jeff asked then. He didn’t like the idea of his only daughter to be pregnant out of wedlock.

“No Dad,” Liz quickly answered. It was bad enough that Max would have to pretend to be her boyfriend, she didn’t want her parents getting the idea there would be a wedding in the future.

“We haven’t talked about it,” Max added knowing it would make Jeff feel better if he at least thought they would be thinking about it in the near future.

“We are going to move in together though, I’m going to rent this place out and move in with Max,” Liz explained.

“Oh guys you really should reconsider. Why not sell both flats and buy a house, you’re certainly going to need the room,” Jeff Parker suggested then.

Liz and Max shared a look. The truth was they hadn’t really thought about the housing issue since they found out Liz was having twins but now they both realised that her father was right. Room would be an issue and Max’s two bedroom apartment wasn’t going to be big enough for very long.

“We’ll think about it,” Liz told them.

“So how far along are you?” Nancy asked then.

“I’m just starting my third month,” Liz replied.

“I thought you’d put on some weight but I didn’t want to say anything,” Nancy smiled.

“Yeah I’ve definitely put on some weight,” Liz agreed.

“Are you taking care of yourself?” She asked worried.

“Of course, I’ve been pretty sick with morning sickness but Max has been taking care of me,” she explained.

“You’re very lucky to have him then,” she told Liz.

Liz squeezed Max’s hand with her own then, “I know,” she told her.

***

“Well that went better than I thought,” Liz breathed out as she closed the door on her parents who had just left.

Max was sitting on the couch and gestured for her to join him. Liz fell into the cushions next to him and placed her head on his shoulder.

“You’re not upset with me are you?” He asked then.

“About you telling my parents we’re dating?” Liz smiled.

“Yeah,” he nodded.

“No just surprised. Its just going to make things harder in the long run isn’t it, I mean we’re not a couple,” she stated.

“True, we’re not,” Max replied as he started to play with Liz’s hair, “but they don’t have to know that and down the track we can just tell everyone we decided it wasn’t working out and we’re better of as friends,” he explained his reasoning.

“I guess,” Liz responded vaguely.

Truthfully, she had hoped Max might have suggested that they actually consider giving a relationship a go. More and more she felt her feelings for Max changing, evolving into something more than a best friend and she wanted to talk to him about it but she was scared. She didn’t want things to change between them and she didn’t know how she would handle it if Max rejected her.

Liz wondered why it had been so easy to start sleeping together to have a baby but it was so hard to talk about feelings.

Max was having similar thoughts to Liz. He still wanted to ask her about her, “I love you,” comment a month earlier but he was also scared of what would come of the conversation. Since that day, it had given him more opportunity to consider his feelings for Liz and he found that while he thought his feelings were purely of the best friend nature that they were quickly becoming something a lot more.

“What will we tell your parents?” Liz asked then. “I don’t know if they’ll buy the story that we’ve been dating secretly.”

Max cocked his head to the side as he thought about it. Could he and Liz really pull it off? He thought so.

“I think we could pull it off,” he told her.

“So you want them to think we’re dating too? And the others?”

“Well they might not buy it so easily, and they would also be angry that we didn’t tell them so I say we tell my parents that we’ve been dating and we can tell Isabel, Alex, Michael and Maria the truth,” Max replied.

“Ok,” Liz agreed.

She trusted Max and if he thought that this was for the best than she would go along with it and just hope that it didn’t all just blow up in her face.

“Why don’t you go take a nice long bath and I’ll clean up,” Max suggested then.

“Are you sure?” She asked.

“Of course, you worked hard cooking that beautiful meal,” he replied.

“Ok I think I will,” Liz smiled as she climbed to her feet. She hesitated then as she thought about whether she should make her next suggestion or not, but finally she decided, why not? It was in the spirit of their agreement to back off slowly. “When you’re finished you could join me?” She told him.

Max was surprised, was Liz really inviting him to get naked and into a bath with her? Did she have any idea what that would do to him and what it would most likely lead to?

“O-Ok,” he replied.

“Good, don’t be too long,” Liz smiled at him before she turned and headed to her bath.

***

Max rinsed the dishes and glasses quickly and loaded them into the dishwasher. He didn’t want to waste a single second in which he could be in the bath with Liz. Once the dishwasher was full, he filled the sink up with hot water and placed the pans inside to soak. He then wiped down the table and benches before turning the dishwasher on.

“All done,” he grinned. It was an ordinary job but under the circumstances he didn’t think Liz would mind.

***

Liz was soaking in the bath, she had it filled with hot water and bubbles, and candles lit for light instead of having the light on. She had also left the door open.

Max stood in the doorway watching her for a few minutes until Liz opened her eyes and noticed him.

“That was quick,” she teased.

“Yeah I was sort of distracted,” he replied sheepishly.

“Well don’t waste time standing there get undressed,” Liz told him.

“Ok,” he agreed. He undressed slowly aware of Liz’s eyes on him the entire time and by the time he pushed his boxers down his legs he was already well on his way to be aroused.

Liz moved forward to allow him to slip in the bath behind her and once he was in, he pulled her back against his chest.

“Oh this is so nice,” Max groaned.

“It sure is,” she agreed.

Max began rubbing circles on Liz’s abdomen then. “I can’t believe our babies are in there,” he whispered.

Liz smiled, “Well believe it because they’re making me fat,” she laughed.

Max could barely tell the difference, her stomach was still flat the only difference he saw at all was her breasts looked fuller. Without thinking, he raised his hands and cupped them.

“These are getting bigger,” he breathed huskily against her neck.

Liz moaned and moved her neck so that Max had access to it. He leaned in and kissed her gently as his hands began to massage her breasts.

“Is this ok?” He whispered.

“No,” Liz replied before she quickly turned in the bath so she was facing Max.

She leaned in then until her lips were barely an inch from Max’s. “No, it’s not enough,” she told him before closing the distance.

Thanks everyone, glad you enjoy the last part :D

Seventeen

The kiss felt endless between them but as their tongues stroked together the bathroom got warmer and warm.

Liz rose to her knees in an effort to get closer to Max and with Max’s help she was quickly straddling his lap, his cock pressed firmly against her.

Max groaned as he felt her wetness against him. He had missed her body desperately over the past month. He had become addicted to Liz Parker and he had no idea how he was supposed to ween himself off, and more importantly, he didn’t know if he ever wanted to.

They broke the kiss panting. Their eyes locked and in silent communication Liz reached between them and grasped Max’s cock and rose above it so she could sink down on it.

Max threw his head back and groaned as Liz’s walls engulfed him. She was slick and hot and he thought he had died and gone to heaven.

“God Liz,” he whispered.

Liz smiled as she began to slowly rock against Max. He was so hard and she felt so full with him inside of her. She had missed the feel of him being so physically and emotionally joined to her.

“Max…” she whispered.

With one hand on her hip to help her, Max leaned in and took a nipple into his mouth. It was already hard from the water and Liz moaned the second his tongue made contact with the rosy flesh.

“Yes Max,” she cried out throwing her head back.

Max laved both breaths equally as Liz continued to slowly rock against him but soon it just wasn’t enough.

“I need more of you,” he pleaded.

With a nod, Liz rose up and sunk back down on Max’s cock. She continued this process over and over again with Max’s help and soon he would thrust to meet her.

“Yes Liz… you feel so good,” he moaned.

“Hmm Max,” Liz moaned.

The water in the bath was slopping over the sides but the lovers didn’t care. Their mouths were dancing furiously as their bodies slapped together over and over as they brought each other pleasure.

When Liz felt her orgasm upon her, she sunk down on Max harder and faster. “Ahh Yes Max….” she cried as every ceiling her body tingled all he way down to her toes.

Max buried his head in Liz’s neck as his own orgasm approached, and with two final thrusts upwards he emptied his seed deep inside of her.

“God baby, ahh yes,” he moaned in her ear.

As their bodies went limp they remained in the cooling bath just wrapped in each other’s arms.

Max continued to kiss Liz’s neck as her hands ran through his hair.

“That was…” Liz finally whispered unable to find the words to express how she truly felt about what just happened between them.

“Perfect,” Max offered.

Pulling back, Liz smiled shyly. “Yeah it was, perfect,” she agreed.

Reaching up Max pushed some of Liz’s damp hair away from her face, “Liz…” He started but before he could continue there was a loud knock on the door.

Liz looked towards the door which she couldn’t really see from the bathroom in confusion wondering who would be knocking on her door at that time of night.

“You should get that,” Max smiled disappointed that the moment between them had been interrupted.

Liz nodded and reluctantly pulled back from Max allowing his limp cock to slide from her body. She reached for a towel and wrapped it around her body before placing a terry cloth robe over the top.

***

Once in the hallway Liz stomped towards the door where the person on the other side banged again. She was annoyed that she had been interrupted with Max; it felt as though he had wanted to say something and it had all been ruined.

She pulled open the door and came face to face with the person on the other side.

“Kyle,” she said surprised.

“Hey Liz, I’m sorry am I interrupting?” He asked taking in her attire.

Liz looked at the armful of snacks Kyle had in his arm.

“I haven’t seen you in weeks so I thought I’d take a chance you were home alone like usual and come over with a DVD and some snacks,” he smiled and gestured towards the arm load of things he had.

“Oh wow,” Liz replied.

***

In the bathroom, Max could hear Kyle’s voice at the door so with a sigh he pulled himself out of the bath.

He knew Liz and Kyle had gotten close during the month that he had been AWOL but Liz had assured him it was just friendship. He was wondering now however if Kyle had a completely different idea.

He wrapped the towel Liz had left out for him, the one that coincidently matched the one she had on under her robe, and walked out of the bathroom.

***

“Kyle I’m sorry but Max is here,” she apologised. She felt bad because she hadn’t seen Kyle much lately. After her morning sickness and work the only thing she wanted to do at the end of the day was to curl up with Max. Kyle of course didn’t know that.

“Hey who’s at the door?” She heard Max’s voice and a few seconds later he approached. Liz’s mouth fell open in surprise when she realised he was only wearing a towel.

“Oh I’m sorry I didn’t realise,” Kyle said his eyes going wide. It was obvious what he had interrupted between Max and Liz since they were both wet. He was surprised and a little confused though because Liz had only ever referred to Max as her best friend, there had never been a hint of a romance between them and Kyle had thought she was single.

Max bit back the smirk on his face. “Hey Kyle,” he said.

“Hey Max,” he replied.

Liz felt silly standing in front of Kyle in her robe.

“Kyle come in, let us just throw some clothes on,” she suggested.

“Not its fine Liz how about a raincheck?” He asked.

“That would be great,” Liz smiled.

“Sorry to interrupt,” he apologised again.

“It’s ok,” Liz smiled.

“See ya Max.”

“Later Kyle,” Max nodded.

Kyle seemed like a great guy and now that he knew that there was something was going on between he and Liz he hoped he would let go of any idea he had of being any more than Liz’s friend and neighbour.

Once the door was shut, Liz leaned against it with a grin. “Well that was embarrassing.”

Max chuckled as he stepped forward and hugged her. “Yeah almost like being caught in the act,” he said.

“It would have been fine if you had stayed in the bathroom or at least put on some clothes before coming out,” Liz hit him playfully.

“Yeah I could have,” Max teased, “But how would that have been any fun. Besides you’re supposed to be my girlfriend remember?”

“Oh really?” Liz arched an eyebrow. “You see because I thought that was all pretend,” she added.

“We have to make it look real Liz,” Max smiled.

“I thought it looked pretty real in the bath,” she whispered huskily.

Max nipped her at bottom lip. “That it did.”

The playfulness was gone then and Max swooped Liz into his arms and carried to her bedroom where all thoughts of Kyle Valenti were forgotten.

***

Liz and Max were surprised when they pulled up out the front of the Evans house to see the cars of his brother and sister.

“I thought we were just having lunch?” Liz asked.

Max had told his parents that he and Liz wanted to have lunch to see them, he had never expected for a second for the whole family to be invited.

“We were,” Max said shocked, “I have no idea what they’re all doing here.”

Liz sighed; she knew this situation had the potential to turn ugly. Max’s whole family would be in the house which meant they would have to tell them altogether and Maria and Isabel would not be happy that they weren’t told first.

“We can put it off,” Max suggested seeing the worry on Liz’s face.

“No we can’t,” she told him.

“It’ll be ok,” Max assured her.

“I know,” she agreed. She figured if she kept saying it that it might just turn out to be true.

When they entered the house, they found Dianne Evans in the kitchen making a salad while everyone else was in the back yard.

“Hey you two,” she smiled when she saw them and reached in and hugged them both.

“Hey ma,” Max replied. “What’s going on I thought this was just going to be a quiet lunch with you and dad?” He said.

“Oh,” Dianne frowned. “I’m sorry honey I mentioned to Isabel that you were both coming for lunch and she wanted to come so I thought I might as well invite Michael as well,” she explained.

“Great,” Max sighed.

Dianne studied her son then, he looked stressed and a glance at Liz next to him showed she appeared nervous.

“Is everything ok?” She asked them.

“Its fine,” Max tried to smile. “I just had to tell you and dad something, I guess I’ll just tell everyone while I’m at it.”

“Ok, are you sure honey because we can speak privately later on?” She suggested.

Max cast a glance at Liz who shook her head. Isabel and Maria would be instantly suspicious and she doubted if Dianne Evans would be able to keep it a secret for long enough anyway.

Greetings were shared all around when Max and Liz joined everyone else in the back yard. Dianne Evans studied her son and Liz throughout the normal loud and happy lunch with her family. Something was different but she couldn’t put her finger on it, and before she had the opportunity to really thinking about it, Max cleared his throat and looked at his family.

“I wasn’t planning on making a family announcement like this,” Max started aware that all eyes were on his. Liz reached for his hand under the table and he took it thankfully.

“Liz and I have something to tell you,” he said.

“Liz and I have something to tell you,” Max said to his family.

“What is it honey?” Dianne said aware that Liz and Max were very nervous about what they wanted to say.

Max took a deep breath. “Wow this is harder than I thought,” he laughed a little and looked at Liz.

“Just say it,” Liz suggested.

Max nodded. “Liz is pregnant,” he said calmly, “and I’m the father.”

Max looked to his family for the reaction then but what he got was completely unexpected. Alex and Michael were chuckling while Maria and Isabel were shaking their heads at him.

“Good one Max,” Isabel said. “You really had us going for a minute, we thought you had something serious to tell us,” she said.

Max frowned in confusion. Why would they think he would joke about something like that?

He looked to his mother then who was staring at Liz like she had two heads. His father was sitting quietly staring at Max.

“You’re serious aren’t you?” He asked eventually.

“Of course. I would never joke about something like this,” he said and the entire table quickly went silent.

“Liz?” Maria immediately asked.

Liz smiled at her friend; “We’re having a baby, well actually babies,” she told them.

“How did this happen?” Isabel was next to ask a question.

Liz immediately blushed at the question. “The usual way,” she answered eventually which made Isabel’s eyes go wider.

“I’m confused,” Maria said then.

“You two are just friends?” She added.

“I know this is a bit of a surprise,” Liz spoke up, “and we never intended on telling everyone together like this but now it’s out there,” Liz said. “I think the most important thing is that Max and I are thrilled about this and we hope that you can be just as happy for us.”

“Are you two together?” Dianne Evans finally spoke up.

Max and Liz shared a look. It was a look that asked if they were really going to go through with the lie they had started.

“Yeah we are,” Max finally replied.

“What!” Maria and Isabel gasped.

Max’s grin grew at his family’s reaction.

“Was this planned?” Phillip asked then. He knew his son and he knew he was too responsible to just get someone pregnant.

“Yes it was,” Max replied honestly. He didn’t want anyone, especially his family, to think that his children were an accident or mistake.

“Its something that Liz and I talked very seriously about. It’s what we both want and we’re committed to do this together whether together as a couple of just best friends.”

“So you aren’t a couple?” Maria asked confused.

“Max and I are giving things a go as more than best friends,” Liz replied.

“Wow this is such a shock,” Phillip Evans said. “Having children is a big responsibility, and twins even more so.”

“We know that,” Max replied.

“Do you?” He countered. “Have you thought about where you’re going to live, what about Liz’s job and money while she can’t work?”

Max sighed as his father fired questions at him. He didn’t expect anything less from him.

“Phillip, both Max and I have very good jobs so money isn’t an issue,” Liz told him.

“As for where we’re going to live we’ve decided to move into my apartment and rent Liz’s until we can find somewhere a little bigger when the twins get bigger.”

Max was flying by the seat of his pants with this. They had decided to move into his apartment but they had also agreed that it wasn’t going to be big enough now that they were having two babies instead of one. The previous arrangement meant Liz had the spare room but Max was thinking Liz could share with him and the babies could have the spare room.

“And if things don’t work out between you?” Dianne asked them. They had made it obvious that they weren’t sure if their future involved being a couple of simply friends. “I mean what happens if you decide to just be friends? Down the track you’ll be introducing other partners into the mix, what happens to the children then? That could be confusing,” she rambled. She was trying to make sense of what was going on. Her son shows up to her house telling her he’s going to be a dad, it had rocked her to the core.

Max frowned at his mother. Sure, they were all valid points but not one’s he needed to discuss with her.

“I think you’re missing the point Dianne,” Liz stepped in and said, “We’re not here telling you we’re thinking about having a baby, we are having a baby. We can’t take it back, and we don’t want to.”

“Wow,” Isabel said again.

“Well I for one think it’s great,” Alex grinned at them from across the table. “I always thought that you two would make a great couple and thought you would have worked it out yourselves by now,” he chuckled.

Liz and Max smiled. If they only knew how long it had really taken for them to realise. Truth was they both still hadn’t.

“Welcome to fatherhood Maxwell, your life will never be the same,” Michael added.

“Thanks,” Max grinned happily.

“Speaking of children I should go check on Adam he’s been asleep for hours,” Maria said rising to her feet. She sent Liz a look though, which told her that she wasn’t off the hook with her.

“Mum, Dad?” Max asked then.

After Liz’s parents had taken the news so well he had gotten his hopes up that his parents would too.

“Congratulations Max, Liz,” Phillip smiled.

He had put his initial worries to ease when he heard Max’s constructive answers to his questions. He had also reminded himself that Max was 30 and very successful in his own career. His son was responsible and had never given him a reason to doubt his responsibility.

“We are happy for you,” Dianne whispered then. “We’re just shocked, it would have been nice if we’d known you were dating, or at least thinking about doing this,” she admitted.

“We know,” Liz smiled, “but we also knew you’d all just try to talk us out of it and we didn’t want that.”

“You’re right,” she admitted sheepishly.

***

Liz looked at the clock as she counted down. “Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven…”

“What ya doing?” Max asked as he walked into the living room in a cut of shirt and basketball shorts.

“Just counting down the seconds until Maria and Isabel are banging on your door looking for me,” she grinned.

“Three, two, one.”

Max chuckled at her but a few seconds later there was a loud knock on the door followed by Maria’s calling out, “We know you’re in there Liz!”

Max opened the door and stared at his sister and sister in law. “Can I help you?” He asked.

“Michael is waiting downstairs for you,” Maria stated. “So take a hike so we can have some girl time with Liz,” she said.

It was going on nine o’clock and Liz’s morning sickness was subsiding like it usually did but Max was still concerned.

“Ok but ease up on her she’s not well this morning,” he warned.

“Ok,” they agreed.

They followed Max into the apartment and found Liz sitting on the couch staring at them.

Max walked towards her, leaned in, and kissed her softly on the forehead. “You ok?” He asked. “Because I can stay until you feel better.”

“I’ll be fine, go and get sweaty with Michael and Alex,” she smiled.

“Ok,” he grinned.

Maria and Isabel waited until Max had picked up his bottle of water and left the apartment before turning their attention to Liz.

As soon as the door shut Maria was ready to pounce but one good look at Liz, and seeing the sickly colour of her face she sobered.

“You ok chica?” She asked moving towards the lounge and sitting next to her.

“I’ll be fine in an hour,” Liz smiled. “I just can’t move around much.”

“Good, then we’ll spend the next hour catching up on what the hell you’ve been keeping from us,” Isabel said as she took a seat across from Liz.

So Liz did exactly that, she spent the next hour telling her best friends the absolute truth about her and Max. About the fact that she had fallen in love with him and didn’t know how to tell him, as well as her fears that he didn’t feel the same and by the end Maria and Isabel helped Liz come up with the perfect plan to tell Max how she felt.

“So you want to tell us when you and Liz hooked up and why you didn’t tell us about it?” Michael asked as he took first go with the basketball and dribbled it in front of Max.

Max grinned, “Well actually we didn’t really tell the whole truth yesterday,” he admitted.

“What is the truth?” Alex asked.

“We’re not dating,” Max said.

“What?” Alex asked.

“Yet,” Max grinned.

“Then how is Liz pregnant?” Michael asked confused.

Alex rolled his eyes at Michael. “Duh,” he said.

“Liz wanted to have a baby and she asked me to be the father. I eventually said yes and at first we were going to do it artificially but then we decided to try naturally first,” he started to explain.

“And then you realised how hot she was?” Michael guessed.

Max glared at his brother. “Something like that,” he answered.

“You did didn’t you?” Alex asked. “You’ve fallen in love with her?”

Max stopped moving and scratched his ear nervously. “Yeah I have,” he admitted and grinned.

“So having sex with her was all you needed,” Alex laughed but stopped when it was obvious Max wasn’t laughing.

“So what’s the problem?” Michael asked.

“I’m too gutless to tell her the truth in case she doesn’t feel the same,” he admitted.

“You’re kidding right?” Michael asked.

Max shook his head.

“Don’t be a fucking coward Maxwell.” He frowned. “Tell the woman you love her and put yourselves both out of your misery,” he ordered.

“I agree,” Alex grinned before steeling the ball from Michael and scoring.

Nineteen

Max cringed as he looked at the latest email in his inbox from Dave. Dave was having a dinner party on Friday night with a few of the firm’s major clients and he wanted Max to attend. Max hated the dinners Dave put on, they were boring and usually the people he invited were rich clients who expected you to kiss there feet.

He picked up the phone then and dialled Liz’s cell, hoping that he could get hold of her.

“Hey” she answered.

“Hey how are you?” he asked with a smile. He loved hearing her voice. It had been a couple of weeks since the game of basketball with Michael and Alex and he still hadn’t worked up the courage to talk to her about his feelings. He had gone to a few times but he had always been interrupted and then he would loose his nerve.

“Good, you?” she asked.

“Good, listen I just got an email from Dave about a dinner party on Friday night” he explained the reason for his call.

“Oh no” Liz groaned.

“Please tell me you’re not working and you’ll come with me?” he pleaded.

“I’m not working but do you really want me to come?” Liz asked feeling a little unsure. She was showing now, her stomach sticking out and it would be almost impossible to hide in a dress.

“Of course I do, in fact I’m not going without you” Max said.

On the other end, Liz smiled. Max said and did the sweetest things sometimes and it made her feel as though maybe he did have feelings for her too. She had been working at the plan that Maria and Isabel had come up with but she wasn’t quite ready to put it into action yet.

“Ok then” she agreed, “but everyone will probably be able to tell I’m pregnant,” she pointed out just in case he hadn’t realised.

“That’s ok with me if it’s ok with you,” Max told her. He was proud that he was the father of her babies and he didn’t care who knew about it.

“That’s fine with me” she smiled.

“Ok thank you, I’ll see you at home tonight” Max said.

“I won’t be home till eight ok,” she reminded him.

“I’ll wait and we can have dinner together?” Max suggested.

“Sounds good but if you get hungry make sure you eat” Liz replied.

“Which one of us is pregnant here?” Max chuckled.

“Ok, ok see you tonight”

“Bye” Max replied before he hung up.

As soon as he placed the phone down on the cradle, there was a knock on his door and he looked up to find Tess standing there with a grin.

He sighed as he signalled for her to come in. Once again she had her jacket off and the blouse she had on was fairly see through but he had figured out by now that was on purpose. She only took the jacket off when she came to see him, the rest of the time she looked respectable in a suit.

“What can I do for you Tess?” he asked.

“I was wondering if you were going to Dave’s dinner party on Friday night?” she asked.

“Um yeah” Max nodded wondering why Tess was invited. In Max’s opinion, Tess was the junior person in experience at the firm and he knew that most likely the other associates weren’t being invited.

“I was wondering if you wanted to go together?” she smiled.

Max looked up at her surprised.

“Well I figured since we were both going…” she trailed off when she saw the look on Max’s face.

“Um thank you but no. Liz is coming with me” he replied.

“Oh” Tess frowned. Weren’t Max and Liz only friends? So why would he bring her to a boring dinner party where people would be talking work all night. He would have a much better time with her.

“Was that all?” he asked then.

“Um yeah sure” Tess said. “I’ll see you later”

“Bye Tess” Max said concentrating on his work and avoiding looking at her at all. Liz was right. Tess did have the hots for him and Max didn’t want to do anything to encourage her, because he was definetely not interested in her. He thought it would be good when Tess saw Liz on Friday night and realised that she was pregnant with his baby, maybe she would finally get the message.

Liz looked up from her sandwich when a shadow fell over her.

“HI Liz” her boss smiled down at her.

“Hi Jerry” she replied.

“Do you mind?” he asked gesturing to the seat across from her desk.

“Not at all” she smiled.

Jerry sighed tiredly as he sat down. It was a big job running a major department and he was lucky to have good staff, one of those being Liz.

“I’m sorry its take me this long to catch up with you” he apologised.

“That’s ok,” she said.

“So you’re pregnant,” he said.

“Yeah” she grinned.

“Congratulations” he told her truly meaning it.

“Thanks, we’re having twins,” she said then and Jerry’s eyes went wide.

“Damn you” he laughed then, “Two is twice the trouble for me and you” he joked.

“I know,” she agreed.

“So your office bound for the next six months?” he guessed.

“If I’m lucky. I’m almost in my fourth month and I doubt I’ll be up and about in my ninth,” she guessed.

“True” he nodded.

“Do you have enough staff?” he asked hopefully. Their budget was tight and he didn’t’ think he could afford to hire someone else.

“Yeah I think we have it covered. The others understand the situation and I think it helps that they know if things could be different, I would be out there pulling my weight. Besides Kelly hated all the paperwork she had to do”

“Good” he nodded. “Ok just keep me up to date and let me know if anything changes. I take it you’ll be having at least 12 months off afterwards?”

“Yeah” Liz nodded.

“Ok well you have to put that in writing and send it to HR,” he informed her.

“Already on it” she smiled.

Jerry stood up then, “got to keep moving” he said, “congratulations again Liz” he said before he left.

After he was gone, Liz sighed in relief. That was one less thing to worry about now.

***

On Friday night Liz was just getting out of the shower when Max walked into her apartment. He was dressed in a fresh charcoal pin stripe suit and he looked yummy.

Max was having similar thoughts to Liz as she stood in only a towel with her hair piled on top of her head.

“Hey” he whispered.

“Hey” She replied. “You look good,” she told him.

Max looked down at himself and smiled. “Thanks, I wasn’t sure what you were going to wear so I thought I’d play it safe” he told her.

“I’m going to wear red” Liz smiled.

“Good I love you in red,” Max told her.

Liz felt herself shiver at the huskiness of his voice. “Thank you”

Liz walked to her draws then and pulled out a black set of underwear to wear under her dress. She contemplated going back into the bathroom to put them on but decided against it and simply let the towel fall to the ground.

Max couldn’t take his eyes off Liz’s beautiful body. He wanted to walk over and touch her and before he knew what was happening his feet were doing just that. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, his hand coming to rest on the bump on her stomach that seemed to have appeared over night, and he nuzzled his face into her neck.

“Hmm you smell good,” he whispered. She smelt like coconut form her body wash.

“So do you” she sighed and closed her eyes.

They stood like that for a few minutes before Liz pulled back, “If you don’t let me go we’re going to be late,” she told him. She had already done her hair and make up and now she just needed to put some clothes on.

“You look so good like this” Max groaned.

Liz blushed, “you can see it again later,” she teased.

“I’m going to hold you to that” Max whispered huskily.

“Ok” she grinned happily.

“I better go out into the living room then” he grinned.

“Good idea” she laughed.

Ten minutes later, she was ready to go. Her dress was tight and went just under knees and she was wearing a pair of black high heels with it.

Max hopped up from the couch as she walked in, “wow you look gorgeous” he told her.

“Thank you” she replied.

They made a striking couple as they walked hand in hand out of Liz’s apartment and towards the lift.

When it opened, Kyle was standing on the other side and almost ran straight into them.

“Liz, Max… wow” he said as he took in Liz’s appearance.

“You look beautiful,” he told Liz.

Max growled.

Liz blushed, partly from Kyle’s compliment but mostly because of the Max’s jealousy. “Thanks”

She watched as Kyle looked her over again then, something Max was aware off too but then his eyes stopped on her stomach.

Liz didn’t know if she should say anything. She could see Max grinning from beside her.

“Well we better go” she said, “but we’re still having lunch tomorrow right?” she said to Kyle.

“Yeah I’ll see you then” he said a little shocked still.

“Bye Max”

“Bye Kyle” Max replied politely.

Max guided Liz into the lift then. “You’re having lunch with him tomorrow?” he asked.

“Yeah” Liz nodded and then looked at Max who was grinding his jaw.

“Max are you ok?” she asked as she bit down on her bottom lip to hide her smile of happiness.

“I’m fine” he tried to smile.

The lift opened then and Max guided Liz to the hire car he had arranged for the night to pick them up and drop them off.

“We’ll have to stay at your house tonight,” she said as Max helped her in, “I don’t want to keep Kyle up all night with all our noises” she grinned.
