Chapter 10
That night, Max had been walking around for hours before he spotted some batting cages and headed over there. While he was there, he poured out all of his frustrations into each ball he hit. By the time he realized what time it was and headed home, he realized he was too late.
After letting out all of the tears he had been holding in, he took a nap knowing that calling Liz at that point would be useless since she was getting on a plane. So he decided to call her when he woke up.
***
Meanwhile in New York…
Liz got off the plane and took a cab to her new two-story dorm. She was living with three new girls that were there for a summer program to get them used to life at Julliard. When she got there, the three girls ran up to her to introduce themselves.
“You must me Liz!” one girl said extending her hand to shake Liz’s. “My name is Eileen, and this is Kelley and Katy.” Eileen said while pointing to the other girls.
“Hi,” Liz said with a small smile and a wave. “It’s nice to meet you guys.”
“You too” they all said still standing around awkwardly.
In order to break the silence Liz said, “Umm, do you guys know which room is mine? I want to put my stuff down.”
“Yeah, we decided to give you the biggest room since you’ve been at Julliard the longest. Your room is right at the top of the steps.” Kelley told her.
“Thank you,” Liz said as she made her way up to her room and got changed into some dance clothes. As she made her way back downstairs, she saw the girls crowded around the television watching a baseball game. “I’m going to head over to the studio, I should be back later.”
All three girls just nodded since they were enthralled with the game that was on TV. Liz saw their acknowledgement, and headed out of the apartment into the fresh New York City air.
As she was walking to the studio, she heard her phone ring. Noticing who it was, she picked up right away. “Hello?”
“Hey” Max said in a voice that sounded weak and defeated.
“Hey. When did you get back?” She asked while she weaved her way in and out of tourists walking around.
“This morning at around nine.”
“Max…”
“Look, I guess there really isn’t anything to say right now. I just wanted to make sure you were okay and that you made it to New York safe and sound.”
“I’m fine. I’m actually walking to the studio right now.” She said and there was a moment of uncomfortable silence. “Max please don’t be mad at me for wanting to take a break. I just think…”
“Liz it’s okay. You need to focus on your dancing right now, and I guess I really should focus on my baseball. Just…” Max had to pause for a moment because tears were forming in his eyes.
“Just what?” Liz asked him confused.
“Just always remember that I love you, and you mean the world to me. Okay?”
Liz too now was fighting back tears. “Okay.” Liz looked up and realized she made it to her destination. “I have to go now Max. Good luck with the team. I know you’ll do great.”
‘Thanks, I’ll try. Bye Liz.”
“Good Bye Max.” Liz said and hit the end button on her phone.
She pulled open the door, and when she got inside of the studio, she found that she was the only one there. So she took this opportunity to dance away her sadness. She warmed up, and stretched, then put in a CD and just started to feel the music, and dance.
I know there's something in the wake of your smile.
I get a notion from the look in your eyes, yea.
You've built a love but that love falls apart.
Your little piece of heaven turns too dark.
As the song started, Liz was on the ground and did mainly upper body movement.
Listen to your heart
when he's calling for you.
Listen to your heart
there's nothing else you can do.
I don't know where you're going
and I don't know why,
but listen to your heart
before you tell him goodbye.
When the chorus started, she got up and let her feet move on their own. She let herself become the dance.
Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile.
The precious moments are all lost in the tide, yea.
They're swept away and nothing is what is seems,
the feeling of belonging to your dreams.
Listen to your heart
when he's calling for you.
Listen to your heart
there's nothing else you can do.
I don't know where you're going
and I don't know why,
but listen to your heart
before you tell him goodbye.
Listening to the song made her think about Max, and all they had been through over the past three years, which made her dance her heart out.
And there are voices
that want to be heard.
So much to mention
but you can't find the words.
The scent of magic,
the beauty that's been
when love was wilder than the wind.
As the song picked up, she started doing more leaps, and big tour jetés. The more heart she put into it, the higher off the ground she got.
Listen to your heart
when he's calling for you.
Listen to your heart
there's nothing else you can do.
I don't know where you're going
and I don't know why,
but listen to your heart
before you tell him goodbye.
Liz got so into the dance that she didn’t even notice one of the instructors watching her at the door.
Listen to your heart, mm-mmmmmm
I don't know where you're going
and I don't know why,
but listen to your heart
before you tell him goodbye.
As she finished the dance, she did a triple pirouette, into a pas de bouree, and landed back on the ground. When the last note ended, Liz put her head on the ground and let the tears stream down her face.
She stayed there for a few moments before she heard clapping and quickly wiped her eyes before looking up to see who had been watching her.
“Liz that was absolutely beautiful. I don’t think I have ever seen you dance quite like that before.” Her instructor told her as she walked up to Liz.
Liz smiled at the compliment and thanked her.
“I heard you are working at Broadway Dance Center for the summer, what an excellent opportunity for you.”
Liz nodded and said. “Yeah I’m very excited. I’m hoping this will open some doors for me.”
Her instructor smiled and looked her up and down. “I’m sure it will.” She then paused for a moment before continuing. “Especially if you lose some weight. Have you gained a little bit?”
Liz frowned at that comment. “I don’t think so.” Liz said and looked into the mirror that was draped across the entire wall.
“Hmm,” her instructor replied. “Perhaps you should think about going on a diet.”
Liz simply nodded, and thought of an excuse to leave. She gathered her things, said goodbye to her professor, and silently walked back to her dorm. When she got there, she was thinking about going straight to her room to be alone, but changed her mind when she got in and saw how excited the girls were about the baseball game.
Liz couldn’t help but laugh at them. “What’s all the excitement?” She asked.
“David Wright just hit a grand slam!! We were losing to the Braves 7-3 in the bottom of the ninth, and Smoltz pitched David a perfect fastball that David slammed into left centerfield. Time for extra innings baby!!” Katy screamed.
Liz couldn’t help but laugh and watch the game with them. She also couldn’t help but notice how good looking David Wright actually was. However, noticing that this was a Mets game, Liz felt a tinge of sadness as she thought of Max.
When the game was finally over, the girls got up from the couches deciding to go out to eat to celebrate the Mets winning. They thought it would be a great time to all bond and get to know each other, so they asked Liz if she wanted to go along with them.
“Uhh…no thanks guys, I’ll have to take a rain check. I’m really tired, so I’ll just make myself something here and then head to bed.” She said motioning to her room. “But you guys go off and have fun.” With that she began walking up to her room.
The three girls just looked at each other and asked her once more, “Are you sure Liz?”
Liz turned around mid step with a grateful smile on her face, “Yeah guys I’m sure. Thanks though.” She then turned around and continued her way up the steps.
“Okay, we’ll see you later.” Katy said tentatively, and the three of them got their coats and walked outside to go find some food.
When Liz got to her room she decided to take a shower. As she was undressing, she looked at herself in the mirror and started picking at the “fat” on her body that she believed to be there. No wonder Max was kissing Serena she thought, I’m so disgustingly fat…there is no way I’m eating tonight. With that, she took a shower, and then went to sleep.

One month later…July 2005
Liz ended up getting along really well with Eileen, Kelley, and Katy. The four of them even decided to continue living together during the school year. They were currently sitting on their couch watching a Real World marathon on MTV when they heard a knock on their door. They all let out annoyed sighs when they heard it.
“Don’t people know that the Real World marathon is on and we can’t be bothered?” Kelley said looking at the door.
Liz just laughed at her and got up to answer it. “Don’t worry, I’ll get it guys.” She said rolling her eyes at their silly addiction to the show. When she opened the door, her jaw almost hit the floor. She was completely shocked.
“Surprise!” Maria said as she held out her arms.
Liz engulfed Maria in a huge hug. “Oh my God Maria! What are you doing here?”
Maria pulled back and answered, “I have an interview with a label that is interested in me. So I figured I’d surprise you, and maybe crash here for a few days?” She finished in a hopeful voice.
“Absolutely!” Liz said. “Come on in. You can put your stuff down in my room and then I’ll introduce you to the girls.” Liz let Maria in and led her to her room. When they got to her room, Maria threw her stuff on the ground then took a good look at Liz.
“My God Liz, you look so thin! How much weight did you lose?” Liz just scrunched up her face and then looked down to look at herself.
“Oh, um, I don’t know, I haven’t really noticed.” Maria gave her a look, and Liz continued, “It must be from all the extra dancing and stuff I’ve been doing.” She finished lamely. “Let’s go downstairs and you can meet the girls.” She said trying to change the subject, and left her room to go back downstairs.
Eileen, Kelley, and Katy all looked at her as she descended the steps. “Who was at the door?” Eileen asked.
Just as Maria entered the room Liz pointed to her best friend and said, “Guys this is my best friend Maria.” She then looked at Maria and pointed out the three girls.
“Hi.” Maria said with a small wave. Turning her eyes towards Liz she suddenly said, “Man I’m starving! Do you want to go out to eat?”
“Um…sure! That sounds great.” Liz said trying to fake a smile. “Do you guys want to come along?”
Looking at their watches, they saw it was only around five thirty so they agreed since the Mets game didn’t go on until seven-ten.
“Great! Did you have any place in mind Maria?” Liz asked her while going to get her purse.
“Nope! You choose babe.”
“Alright, do you guys want to go to Ellen’s? Maria would absolutely love that place.”
“Oh man I haven’t been there in ages! Yeah let’s go there.” Kelley said excitedly
The five of them walked out of the building and hailed a cab to Ellen’s Stardust Diner. When they got there Maria instantly fell in love when she saw the waitress singing in the center of the restaurant.
“Do all of the waiters do this?” She asked Liz once they were seated.
Liz looked over at her and responded, “Yeah, it’s a way for them to try to get noticed by the biggies.”
“Wow, that’s awesome.” Once Maria was done absorbing the atmosphere, she looked at the menu and asked, “So what are you guys getting?”
“I don’t know. There’s so much good food here, I can never decide,” Katy laughed.
“What are you getting Liz?” Maria questioned her, hoping it was something that would fatten her up.
“Oh I’m just going to get a small salad.” Liz said while closing her menu, and looking down at the table.
“Liz that can’t be all you’re getting! You’re too thin, get like a burger or something.” Maria scolded her.
“I had a big lunch that I’m still full from, maybe next time.” She lied. Just then, one of the waiters began singing and fortunately for Liz, Maria’s thoughts went to him and off of Liz.
After dinner, Liz excused herself to go to the rest room. When she got in she looked at herself in the mirror and was still so disgusted with herself. “I think Maria is on crack, because I am not thin at all.” Annoyed with her body, she turned the faucets on and went into the stall so no one would hear her purge what little food she had in her into the toilet. When she was finished she splashed some cold water on her face, fixed her makeup and went back to the table.
