Summary:
Max and Liz are both lonely on New Years Eve and are dragged to a party where they find each other. Will they ever be lonely again? I don’t think so!

A BETTER NEW YEAR

“Do you believe it was a year ago, today?” Max asks as he wraps his strong arms around his lovely girlfriend.

“Yeah, time flies when you’re having fun” she adds with a smile, she too remembering this very day one year ago.

“I’m glad we met” Max says as he smiles down at her.

They were sitting down in their sofa which was in their apartment, watching on the television as the countdown to the New Year began.

“What a story to tell our grandchildren” she adds with a giggle, he just smiles down at her contently while brushing his hand soothingly in her hair.

“I love you Liz” he whispers in her ear softly.

“Mmmmm, I love you too Max”…

ONE YEAR AGO

“Michael, I don’t understand why you brought me here” Max complains looking at all the happy couples holding hands and sharing sweet kisses.

He was probably the only person who would be alone when the clock stroke twelve and the New Year began.

‘What a way to start the year’ he thought with a silent sigh.

“Maxwell, I’m telling you that you will have fun” his brother Michael says with a smile as he watches his girlfriend approach.

“Listen Max, I’m gonna go off with Maria when its twelve o’clock just choose a random person and kiss them, that’s what everyone who has no one is going to do” he adds while leaving.

“Oh, that sure as hell made me feel a whole lot better” Max replies knowing that Michael did not hear him at all.

*****

“Liz, common I want to introduce you to Michael you have to come to the party” Maria begged her best friend while throwing random clothes out of her wardrobe trying to figure out what she should wear.

“Maria I am going to be the only single person there” Liz cries depressed.

Why did Maria have to have such a hard head, didn’t she understand that Liz had just gotten out of a bad relationship with her long time boyfriend.

Why would she even consider making Liz go to a party where everyone would have someone to hold them at midnight and she would be left in the corner alone, once again?

“Liz you know how they say the way you start the year is the way you end it” Maria states pointedly.

“If you’re alone at twelve o’clock then you might be alone for the whole year and then the next year too because you’ll be starting that one off alone as well and then again…” Maria starts to ramble while trying to convince her best friend to join her at the party.

“Ok” Liz said surrendering, while getting up and walking to her bedroom.

“I’ll come” she shouts out and before she can blink an eye Maria comes running out of the room jumping up and down screaming.

“You’re the best Lizzie!”

*****

“Maria where are you going?” Liz tries to shout over the music as she watches Maria leave her side while going in a different direction.

“Great now I’m alone and lost” she says to herself.

She hears a chuckle behind her and turns around ready to scream at the person that finds her boring, lonely self so hilarious.

When she turns though her eyes meet his and shining back at her is the most handsome man she has ever seen.

“C-can I help you?” she asks confused while looking at him up and down, taking in his appearance.

He was wearing tight, dark blue jeans with a white button up shirt and the first few buttons were undone revealing his smooth, tanned chest.

When her eyes meet his again she sees that he too was looking at her and she shifted self-consciously under his hot glaze.

He was going to go crazy if he didn’t get his head straight, Max kept thinking to himself as he looked the brunette beauty up and down.

She was wearing a baby pink v-cut dress that went to mid thigh and had a silver, diamond pin holding it to the side, near her upper hip.

She was beautiful.

“Can I buy you a drink?” he asks and watches as she bites her lower lip in consideration.

“Sure” she finally says. A bright smile forming on her face and Max too smiles as he guides her to the bar.

“I’m Max, Max Evans” he says after they have ordered their drinks and are sitting, facing each other at the bar.

“Liz Parker” she says as she shakes his extended hand with a giggle.

“Now, can you answer me one question Liz?” he asks as he watches her take a sip of her drink.

“Sure”

“What is someone as beautiful like you doing alone on New Years Eve?” he asks while he looks at her lovely face.

“I could ask you the same question” she answers as she smiles at him shyly from behind her long eyelashes.

“You go first” he encourages as he gives her his full attention.

“Well, I broke up with my long time boyfriend last week” she says her smile fading only slightly.

“How long were you together for?”

“One and a half years” she states and he nods his head while sending her an apologetic smile.

“How about you now” Liz says as she quickly changes the mood.

“Why is someone like you all alone on New Years Eve?” she adds.

“Someone like me?” he questions with a smile, interested in what she thought of him.

“Yeah” she says shyly while blushing and looking down at her drink.

“What do you mean someone like me?” he continues with a sly grin.

She looked so sexy when she blushed, he thought to himself.

“Well, if I had someone like you I would let you go out to a party where I knew there would be plenty of girls trying to hook up and if I did let you I would make sure that I was by your side the whole time so that you don’t go find some stranger that …” she explains stopping before she can say any more.

The way she was feeling under his glaze was indescribable and the word she wanted to use was inappropriate.

She had only once believed in love and it had gotten thrown back in her face. She was not about to go ahead and believe in love at first sight.

“That?” he questioned again.

“Huh?” she asks being pulled out of her daze.

“You were saying, how if you had a guy like me you would let him meet a strange girl at a party who?”

“Who’s lonely and looking for someone to kiss her at midnight, so that maybe she won’t spend the whole year alone” she replies not noticing what she was saying but thinking that it was only a thought.

“Now what gave you the idea that you would spend the year alone?” she asks shocked by her reply but thrilled that she was having the same kind of feelings as him.

“Maria” she states simply.

Max chuckles as he brings a hand up to her face caressing her cheek, ever so softly.

“And what exactly is a Maria?” he asks then making Liz giggle enjoying the sound and the look of her happy.

“She’s my best friend who ditched me tonight to stay with her boyfriend, who she brought me here to meet” she explains.

“Wait a second, what’s her boyfriend’s name?” he questions then thinking that her friend Maria might be the girl that his brother was madly in love with.

“Michael” she replies a little confused as to why he would be asking that question.

“Well isn’t this a coincidence” Max says as he laughs.

“What is?” Liz asks confused smiling gently at his laughing face.

He really was a handsome man with his thick brown hair and soothing amber eyes.

“Michael is my brother, he dragged me along tonight cause he wanted me to get out of the house and meet someone” he explains.

“Well I guess you did meet someone” Liz states as she sends him a smile.

“Yeah” he says as his eyes land on her lips and he starts to lean his head down to take a taste of her sweet lips.

“You know you never answered my question” Liz says pulling away, before his lips could land on hers.

She was playing with him, she liked him but she wouldn’t let him get her that easy.

“What question?” he asked distracted still watching her luscious lips as her pink tongue stuck out slightly wetting them.

“Why you’re here alone?”

“Oh” he replies then remembering their earlier discussion.

“Well, I haven’t been in a relationship in a while because my last girlfriend cheated on me with umm this guy that I work with” he says not even caring that he gave away too much personal information.

“Oh my god, I’m so sorry” she says apologetically as she leans into him hugging him tightly.

He breathes in her strawberry scent and smiles devilishly. He knew she was playing with him it was easy to tell but she was the kindest person her had met in ages and it looked as though she really cared about what he was saying.

After what happened with his last girlfriend April, he had told himself that he wouldn’t rush into any relationships ever again, but looking into Liz’s chocolate eyes and seeing the true affection that shown in them he knew that he wouldn’t be able to help himself.

“Why would anyone do something like that, so such a sweet guy?” she asks as she looks into his eyes and Max smiles thankfully.

Her arms were still wrapped around him and when he heard everyone start screaming her wrapped him arms around her waist.

She moved her arms around him neck and she too started to count down to the New Year.

“10, 9, 8 …” she says as she looks at his lips.

He too starts counting down while ever so slowly, leaning in closer.

“7, 6, 5 …”

Together they countdown the rest while drifting together.

“4, 3, 2, 1”

“Happy New Year” they say to each other before their lips meet in a passionate kiss.

Her lips part granting him the access he wanted, while his tongue slides into her mouth dwelling together with hers as she moans softly, sending shivers of lust down his spine.

“Liz!”

“Max!”

The couple part like a deer caught in headlights as they hear their names being called through the party.

Looking to the side they see Michael and Maria looking at them shocked.

“That’s your brother?” Maria asks pointing to Max, while looking to Michael confused.

“Yeah, that’s your bestie?” he asks while looking from Liz to Maria then back to Max and Liz again.

“Well yeah” Maria says.

“Nice going Maxwell” Michael says while looking at Liz, before getting slapped at the back of the head by an annoyed Maria.

“Looks like you weren’t alone for New Years after all” Maria states while looking at Max and smiling at the way he way looking so love struck towards Liz.

“And I doubt that you will be spending the rest of the year alone” she adds while Michael asks if they want to go to a restaurant and they all agree.

“We’ll catch up” Max calls out as he walks hand in hand with Liz towards his SUV.

“I agree with Maria, I don’t see you spending any time alone for a long time, if that’s what you want?” he says unsure with himself if that was a statement or a question.

“I want to be alone, I wanna have a sweet guy by my side” Liz says as she leans up on her tip toes and kisses his soft lips.

“Like I said before, Mr Evans” Liz states with a chuckle.

“If I had a guy like you, I wouldn’t let you go anywhere alone” she finishes.

“Well, as long as you want me Parker, I’ll be here for you” …

PRESENT DAY

“… 5, 4, 3, 2, 1” They count down together happily remembering their past and dreaming of their future.

“And you never did leave my side” Max says while smiling down at her.

“I love you baby” Max adds while pulling out a cream coloured box from behind his back.

“Marry me?” he asks sliding down on one knee, before her.

“Oh my, Max yes!” she answers flinging into his arms pushing him off balance.

They land on the wooden floor in their apartment kissing like crazy as they moan their love for each other.

“Happy New Year, Liz”

“I love you Max, Happy New Year!”
