THE GIRFT OF LOVE 2: THE WEDDING
Keith Parker-Evans bounced excitedly as his father tried to smoothen out his shaggy dark hair.
He was so excited.
His parents were getting married today.
Even though he didn’t exactly know what that meant he knew that it was bringing his parents together and he had seen it over the past 6 months when they has all moved in to their new house.
“Keith, stay still” Max chuckles as he puts the comb down, staring down at his 5 year old son.
“Are we going to see mummy yet, daddy?” he then asks his father with a pout.
He missed his mummy; he hadn’t seen her all day.
“Soon enough, little man” Max replies as he smiles down at Keith.
“I tell you what, why don’t you go play with your cousins” Max suggests as he thinks of a way to busy his son while they wait for the wedding to begin.
“I don’t want to” He states pointedly.
“Why not?” Max asks, ducking down to his level.
“Cause their mean to me” he pouts and Max’s expression turns sympathetic.
“Hey there’s Sarah, that girl from school that you have a crush on” Max says as he sees the little girl walking beside her mother and then sifts his glaze back to his son to see his blushing face.
“I do not!” he says before running off in her direction leaving his father behind to chuckle.
Keith goes up to Sarah and they stand in awkward silence not knowing what to say until little Sarah breaks the silence.
“Hi” she says shyly as she plays with her blonde locks.
“Hi Sarah” Keith replies bitting his lower lip, a habit he got from his mother.
Just as Sarah is about to say something Amy, Keith’s cousin on Liz’s side of the family runs up to them interrupting and saying, “You’re weird”
Amy was the daughter of Liz’s half sister Tess.
Tess and Liz had never gotten along and part of that reason was because of Max.
Max had always been Liz’s friend even before they started to have feelings for each other, but Liz being the shy girl that she still is now never could admit it the way Tess did.
They had gone out on one date but after that Max had stopped coming by her house complaining that he didn’t want to see Tess at all.
After Max and Liz had Keith it was as though Liz won, but not being together with Max in all that time brought Tess great satisfaction.
“What?” Keith says as he stands back embarrassed as he watches Sarah look back and forth from Amy to him.
“All parents get married before they have babies, why were you born before” she says as she sticks her tongue out at him.
Keith thinks about it for a quick minuet not ever thinking about it before up until now.
“I dunno” he replies as he looks down towards the ground, suddenly wanting answers.
“I know” Amy states with a satisfied smile.
“It’s because you’re weird” she laughs loudly before running away, back to her mother’s side.
Sarah looks back at Keith to see a sad expression covering his features and she places her small hand on his shoulder.
“I don’t think you weird” she says as she smiles at him.
Keith’s eyes fill up with tears and he turns away from her running in the direction he knew he would find his father in.
Max turns around when he hears the sound of running coming towards the room, standing up he walks to the door opening it in time to see his son run in with tears in his eyes.
“Hey” Max says worriedly as he rushes to his side, kneeling in front of him and taking him in his arms.
“What happened?” he asks when Keith has calmed down enough to explain.
“I-i was talking to Sarah and Amy came and she says that I’m weird because my mummy and daddy had me before their wedding-” Keith rambles on and Max stays focused trying to hear his words.
Keith then stops his rambling and looks up at his father with confused eyes.
“Daddy why weren’t you and mummy together when you had me?” he suddenly asks and Max sighs knowing that he would have to tell his son eventually.
If not now then when he was older, he just wished it was the later.
“Keithy, come sit down on daddies lap” Max says as he walks over to the couch in the room sitting down on it before patting his lap.
Keith sits on Max’s lap expectantly, waiting for his answers.
“Keith, when mummy and daddy were younger we were best friends, like you Tommy” Max explains, referring to Keith’s bestest friend, as he liked to call him, from school.
“Just your mummy’s a girl and I felt for her the way you feel for Sarah” Max continues.
Keith nods encouraging Max to go on.
“When we got older I went out on a date with your Aunt Tess, because I thought I could take my head off of mummy but it didn’t work” He stops as he sees the confusion cross his sons face.
“Like a play date?” Keith then asks and Max chuckles as he shakes his head.
“No, like a date to go out and eat and watch a movie” Max tries to explain.
“Ok” Keith says simply making Max continue with the story.
“But the date didn’t go well at all and your Aunty Tess, she was really-” he stopped trying to find the right word to explain Tess attacking him on the way back from the movie, when she tried to get into his pants.
“She was really, what daddy?”
“Rough, then when daddy realised the mistake he had done it was too late because not only did he have to put up with Tess but I found out about your mums feelings for me and how broken she was about my date with Tess, you get it?” Max asks wondering if he was understanding all this new information.
“Yes, but I don’t understand why you weren’t together after you have me” he says then.
“Well when I told your mum everything that had happen with Tess and how I only did it to hide my feelings from her, she admitted to me that she liked me too” Max explains with a smile as he remembers the day.
“What happened then?” Keith asks then not understanding where they had gone wrong.
“You grandpa Ed didn’t like daddy because your aunty made up a lie about our date and he didn’t want me seeing any of his daughters” Max says sadly.
“When your mummy heard the lie she broke up with me”
“What broke up?” Keith asks, cutting in.
“It means that she didn’t want to see me anymore” Max explains looking down at his son that sat before him with big eyes while he listened intensely.
“So she wanted to take her eyes out?” he asks shocked as his mouth opens in a gasp.
Max chuckles as he watches his sons shocked expression before telling him.
“No, she didn’t want daddy to talk to her anymore, she wanted to be left alone but when she finally told me what was wrong it was too late. We both thought that it was over so we didn’t make a move to do anything about our feeling because we thought we had lost our chance” Max says.
“The day you were born was the day that your mummy told me about what she had heard from your aunty Tess, we made a promise that we would be friends and forget about the past because we shared the greatest gift of all together, you” he adds smiling down at his son that had a smile on his face.
“And now you’re going to get married and you’re going to stay with me and mummy forever” Keithy says his smile growing wider.
“Yeah, forever and ever” Max replies as he picks up his son and hugs him tightly kissing his cheek as he squirms happily in his arms.
*****
“Do you Maxwell Alexander Evans take the Elizabeth Laurie Parker to be your wedded wife, to love and to hold through sickness and in health as long as you both shall live?”
“I do” Max says with a bright smile as he stares into the eyes of the love of his life.
“And do you Elizabeth Laurie Parker take the Maxwell Alexander Evans to be your wedded wife, to love and to hold through sickness and in health as long as you both shall live?”
“I do” Liz says as tears of happiness roll down her cheek, while she stares straight back into Max’s loving eyes.
“By the power invested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife” the priest says as he smiles at the young couple.
“You may now kiss the bride”
Looking down at their son he grinned back at his parents happily as he clapped his hand, while giving Max the thumbs up, making both Max and Liz chuckle.
Max didn’t have to be told twice, leaning forward he raised her veil, as her lips drifted up to his; he captured hers in a sweet passionate kiss.
Their fist kiss of many to come, as husband and wife.
