“You ready?” Max asked Liz as they pulled up out the front of the restaurant that Dave Harrison was having his dinner party at.

“Yep,” Liz smiled.

The driver opened the car for Max and then he held his hand out for Liz who held onto it tightly as they walked through the front doors of the restaurant.

There were at least 15 people standing around the bar and most of them Liz and Max both recognised as the normal attendees of these types of things.

“Max, Liz,” Dave smiled as he saw them.

He kissed Liz and admired her, “You’re glowing,” he told her.

Liz blushed and Max smiled proudly at his observation. “Congratulations,” he told her.

His wife Larissa joined them then and also congratulated them both on the pregnancy. Liz’s pregnancy was obvious to the casual observer now, her dress fitting snugly over the small bump.

“Thank you,” Liz told them both.

“Liz, would you mind if I stole Max away for a few minutes to meet someone?” Dave asked then.

“Of course not,” Liz replied knowing it would be useless if she did mind. She made small talk with Larissa for a few minutes before she excused herself to visit the bathroom.

When she emerged, the first thing she noticed was that Tess had arrived. Liz watched as the blonde spotted Max and immediately made a beeline towards him. With a shake of her head, she walked to the bar and ordered an orange juice for herself and a beer for Max.

***

Tess knew she was running a little late as she stepped into the restaurant but it took time to look as good as she did in her black cocktail dress. Hopefully the short, tight black dress would finally get Max to notice her. Everyone else appeared to have already arrived, including Max, and even better, she couldn’t see anyone attached to his arm. She wondered then briefly where Liz was, and was glad that she wouldn’t be around to get in way. Tess had plans for Max tonight and she wasn’t going to let Liz get in the way of them.

“Hi Max,” she grinned as she approached.

Max looked away from the group of men he was talking to. “Good evening Tess,” he replied. “Gentleman this is Tess Harding, she’s new,” he explained.

Tess nodded in greeting but wasn’t really interested in the people standing in front of her except Max.

Max continued talking to the men in front of him ignoring Tess’s presence as she stood next to him. Eventually Tess was tired of listing to the boring talk about business and law so she decided to check out the seating arrangement for that night. She needed to sit next to Max so if she had to do a bit of rearranging she would.

When Tess reached the table she spotted Max’s name card, and Liz’s next to it so discreetly as she could she picked up Liz’s and continued around the table until she found her own at the other end, and replaced it with Liz’s. She then returned and placed her name next to Max’s. It wouldn’t matter if Liz wasn’t there.

When it was time to be seated for dinner Larissa Harrison tapped politely on her champagne glass to get everyone’s attention.

“Entrée’s will be served if you would all like to take your seat,” she advised.

Max immediately scanned the room for Liz and smiled when he found her approaching with two glasses in her hands. He hurried towards her and took the beer out of her hands and replaced it with his hand instead as he led her towards the table.

“You didn’t have to get these, I was headed that way,” he smiled.

“Those men were never going to stop talking, we both know that,” she whispered with a grin and Max chuckled.

“You’re right,” he agreed.

Liz had been to enough of Max’s dinner parties and work functions to know that the nights were famously boring and generally consisted of talk about work.

When Tess saw Max approaching her she smiled, “Max over here,” she grinned not seeing Liz by his side.

“You’re sitting next to me,” she smiled as he got closer but her smile soon faltered when she caught sight of Liz.

“Hello Tess,” Liz smiled politely.

“Liz, hi,” Tess replied.

Max frowned as he looked down at the name tags on the seats near Tess. His name was there but Liz’s wasn’t.

“I’m sure there is just a misunderstanding,” Liz said when she also realised what Max was frowning about. Unlike Max though Liz had a pretty good idea who had caused the misunderstanding and looked pointedly at Tess.

“I’ll go talk to Larissa and get it sorted out,” Max said.

“Or Tess could just move,” Liz said bluntly.

Tess’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water as Max and Liz both looked at her.

Larissa Harrison approached then, “Is there a problem?” She asked worried.

“We’re missing a seat,” Max replied.

Larissa frowned as she looked down at the table places. She knew for a fact that Liz had been seated next to Max and that Tess had been seated at the other end. She had done the table arrangements herself.

“That’s not right,” she frowned and walked off to locate where Liz's name place was, already knowing where she would find it.

“Oh looks like your seat is over there,” Tess said as Larissa stopped.

Larissa walked back with a frown. “I’m not sure how this happened Max, I’m so sorry,” she apologised.

“That’s fine is there a spare seat down there, or someone I can swap with? I would like to sit with Liz,” he told her.

Larissa shifted nervously knowing there wasn’t.

Max sighed,

“It’s fine Max,” Liz whispered not wanting to embarrass Larissa when she knew it wasn’t her fault.

“No its not.” Max replied sternly. He looked down at Tess then, “Tess would you mind moving please?” He said then.

“What?” Tess coughed not sure she heard Max right, surely he wasn’t asking her to move.

“I would like to sit with Liz, and since you’re here by yourself I’m sure you won’t mind taking the single seat,” he explained.

His face was expectant and Tess knew there was no way she could say no, “I’d rather stay here,” she tried.

“Obviously,” Liz mumbled but Tess and Larissa both heard her.

“Please Tess,” Max stressed.

“Ok,” she finally replied and stood up.

“Take your place card with you,” Liz added for good measure.

It wasn’t until Tess was standing that she got a good look at Liz and the gasp she emitted when her eyes grazed Liz’s abdomen was priceless. Liz couldn’t help but smile.

“She’s…she’s….she’s,” she kept repeating as she pointed at Liz’s stomach.

“Tess, you’re causing a scene,” Max snapped as Tess continued to gape at Liz bringing attention to her.

“Yes I’m pregnant,” Liz finally finished for her. “Now please stop pointing and staring,” she snapped.

Liz stepped around Tess then and Max held out her seat for her so she could take a seat and then sat down beside her, both ignoring Tess who had only just pulled herself together.

“I’m sorry about all this,” Max leaned in and whispered, his lips grazing her ear.

Liz turned and smiled, “Its ok. I know it’s not your fault and everything has been worked out,” she whispered back.

They continued to gaze at each other then, lost in each other’s eyes until a waiter appeared and placed a dish in front of them.

“Thank you,” Liz said politely.

“Liz I couldn’t help but notice you’re expecting, congratulations,” John Ryan, who was seated across from them offered as they all began eating.

John was a regular to the dinner parties and was one of the few that Liz actually enjoyed talking to. His wife was a nurse, so often she couldn’t attend but he enjoyed talking to Liz about her work.

“Thank you,” Liz smiled.

“How far along are you if you don’t mind me asking?” He wasn’t sure if Max was the father, so John had decided to tread carefully. There’s was the only conversation at the table and everyone was listening.

“I’m just finishing my third month,” Liz smiled.

“Wow,” he said, “you’re showing a lot for three months.”

Max chuckled, “Don’t tell her that John she’s already paranoid enough that she’s getting fat.”

“Sorry,” John replied.

Liz rolled her eyes, at Max. “We’re having twins,” Max told him then with a proud smile.

“Twins? Congratulations you two are certainly going to have your hands full in several months,” he laughed.

“Yeah we know,” Liz smiled.

On the other end of the table, Tess was doing her best to hide her shock. How had no one at the office known that Max and Liz were together? And now Liz was pregnant. Inside she was fuming.

Liz couldn’t help but cast a glance Tess’s way and when she saw the scowl on her face, she grinned briefly before shooting Tess a look that clearly told the blonde, “Stay away, he’s mine.”

***

“Hmm Max,” Liz moaned as Max kissed a trail down her neck. His hands cupped her breasts and he rolled her nipples between his fingers.

They had barely made it in the door after the dinner party before they were tearing each other’s clothes off. The foreplay had begun in the hire car. Liz was caressing Max through this dress pants while they made out like high school students in the back seat.

“You looked so beautiful and sexy tonight,” Max whispered huskily.

“Don’t stop Max,” Liz begged.

“Lets lie down,” Max suggested as he pulled Liz towards his king size bed.

He sat Liz down on the edge and removed her stockings and shoes before kneeling in between her legs. He took one breast into his mouth then, and sucked on the nipple until it was hard before he moved on to the next.

“Max,” she cried.

“God Liz I can’t get enough of you,” Max admitted as he pushed her back on the bed and climbed on top of her.

There was so much he wanted to say to her but he could tell from the look on Liz’s face that she was in a cloud of sexual fog and wouldn’t remember his words.
Max inched inside of her slowly, a groan breaking free from his lips. “You feel so good,” he whispered as he pulled out and thrust back inside of her.

“Yes Max, so good,” Liz moaned.

Their love making was passionate and it didn’t take long before they came apart in each others arms.

Max collapsed onto the bed next to Liz and pulled the sheets up over their quickly cooling bodies.

“That was amazing,” Liz whispered tiredly.

Max smiled as he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her body close against his. He didn’t want to loose the skin to skin contact that they had. He could see Liz’s eyes were already closing as he nuzzled his nose against the side of her face.

“I love you,” he whispered knowing that she wouldn’t hear his words but needing to say them all the same.

“I’m in love with you, Liz Parker,” he said again and smiled liking the way the words sounded coming from his mouth. “Wow that sounds weird but it feels really good,” he chuckles.

His hand moved down to her abdomen then, “I know you can’t hear me little ones but daddy can’t wait to meet you, I love you both and your mummy so much.”

As Max lay down and closed his own eyes, next to him, a tired Liz opened hers and a smile lit up her face.

“So you’re really going to do it?” Michael chuckled as he looked across at his brother, “You’re finally going to tell her you’re in love with her?”

Max grinned back at his brother. He couldn’t remember ever feeling so happy about something as he did about his decision to finally tell Liz how he felt. He was pushing aside all his fears and worries and taking the plunge.

“Yep tonight, I’m going to tell her tonight,” he told them.

“Took you long enough,” Alex chimed in.

“Something like this can’t be rushed, I mean its Liz,” Max defended himself.

“Exactly my point. It’s Liz, your best friend, your soul mate and it took you 25 years to realise that you were in love with her?”

“Well I doubt I was in love with her at five,” Max replied.

“Maybe not but still…” Alex laughed.

“So this time tomorrow you and Liz will actually be attempting to have a real relationship instead of a pretend one,” Michael continued to chuckle as he thought over the situation his brother had gotten himself into.

“Hopefully,” Max grinned loving the prospect of knowing that Liz was truly his, and her knowing that he was hers.

“Well good luck bro,” Michael toasted.

“Yep good luck man. The two of you deserve to be happy,” Alex agreed.

“Thanks guys.”

***

“So he told you he loved you?” Maria questioned excitedly.

Liz had just finished telling her and Isabel about the other night when Max had told her he loved her when he thought that she was asleep.

“Well not exactly,” Liz replied, “he thought I was asleep.”

“But he still said Liz Parker I’m in love with you?” Isabel chimed in.

“Yep,” Liz grinned.

She had felt like she was walking on water the past couple of days she was so happy, and Max seemed to be the same. They were making out and having sex like a real couple that sometimes it was hard for Liz to remember that they weren’t. That he hadn’t really confessed his love and that Max had no idea that she was in love with him too. But now that she knew Max felt the same Liz was determined to talk to him.

“So what are you going to do?” Isabel asked.

“I’m going to tell him I love him,” Liz smiled shyly.

“Oh!” Both Isabel and Maria squealed. They couldn’t believe after all being friends for as long as they had been that this was finally happening. That Liz and Max were going to be together.

“You two make the perfect couple,” Maria sighed.

“Totally,” Isabel agreed.

“It’s just so weird. I mean this is Max, my best friend and I’m head over heels in love with him. I mean seriously I lust over him every second of the day,” Liz replied.

“So the sex is good then?” Maria asked wiggling her eyes.

“Yuk Maria,” Isabel groaned.

“It’s amazing,” Liz whispered.

“I knew it,” Maria cheered.

“Ok so what’s the plan?” Isabel asked.

“I don’t really have one other than, Max I love you,” Liz shrugged.

“No you can’t do it like that,” Isabel objected. “This is the most significant moment in your relationship to date so it has to be perfect. You’re never going to forget this moment Liz.”

“I don’t want it to be too over the top I want it to be real just like Max and I are,” Liz replied.

“Well maybe it could be real and simple but dressed up in some sexy ass lingerie?” Maria suggested.

“You’re good,” Liz grinned.

“Evil but good,” Isabel agreed.

Tess walked along the hallway unsurely. It hadn’t taken much work to find out where Max lived and now she was at the apartment complex she just had to find which one was Max’s.

She was studying the numbers on the doors and comparing it to the piece of paper in her hand that she had scribbled the address down on quickly before fleeing the office.

Tess wasn’t exactly sure what she intended on doing once she got to Max’s apartment, she hoped that once she saw him she would know what to say and that he would invite her into his apartment.

Once outside his apartment she knocked.

A few minutes later the door opened but it wasn’t Max staring back at her instead it was a very attractive guy dressed in a police uniform.

“I’m sorry I was looking for Max Evans,” she explained.

Kyle eyes the blonde in front of him looking for Max. She was a knockout, a perfect pair of tits which right now were right in his face thanks to the extremely tight and cleavage revealing shirt she was wearing.

“Wrong apartment,” he replied.

“Most of the time he’s next door at Liz’s,” Kyle continued and gestured to the door next to his which was Liz’s.

“Liz’s?” She gulped.

“Yeah Liz Parker owns the apartment next door,” Kyle nodded.

“Oh,” Tess frowned. She hadn’t banked on having to deal with Liz being there too.

“But try down there in Max’s apartment,” he pointed to the door at the other end of the hallway.

“Ok thank you,” Tess said.

“No problem,” Kyle grinned.

Tess couldn’t deny that the man in front of her was gorgeous so she smiled back.

“How do you know Max?” Kyle asked causing Tess’s departure from his door to stop.

“Oh we work together,” Tess replied. “But we’re extremely close,” she added.

“Right,” Kyle smirked. Kyle had seen enough of Max and Liz together in the past few months to know that Max Evans didn’t have eyes for anyone else. Obviously, Tess hadn’t worked this out yet, but she would soon enough. He also knew he wouldn’t mind being there to help her through it once Max kicked her to the kerb.

“He’s a nice guy, him and Liz make such a great couple don’t you think?” Kyle asked.

“I wasn’t aware that they were together,” Tess shrugged.

“You know Liz is pregnant right, they’re having twins,” Kyle told her.

“I heard something like that but I didn’t really believe that Max was the father,” Tess replied snidely.

Kyle laughed then, this girl was definetely determined. “Well take it from someone that lives next door to Liz, Max is definetely the father, those to worked really hard to conceive.”

It wasn’t a total lie. Kyle did have the displeasure of hearing Liz and Max having sex on a number of occasions but recently they began spending most of their time at Max’s and Liz had told Kyle that soon she would be moving in there permanently.

“Well it was nice meeting you…”

“Tess,” she offered.

“Well it was nice meeting you Tess, I’m Kyle,” he introduced himself.

“You too Kyle and thanks for your help.”

“No problem.”

Kyle watched as Tess walked the remaining distance to Max’s door. Once she reached it, she turned back and smiled at him hesitantly and Kyle took that at his cue to go back inside.

***

Liz sighed she put her feet up on Max’s coffee table. She had just spent hours shopping with Maria and Isabel and she was absolutely exhausted. She couldn’t wait until Max got home so he could rub her feet for her.

Her eyes were just drifting shut when she heard the knock on the door. Sighing, she hopped up and wondered if it was Max and he had forgotten his keys.

However, when she opened it and saw Tess standing on the other side she frowned.

“Can I help you Tess?” She asked.

“I’m looking for Max,” Tess replied.

“He’s not here at the moment,” Liz explained.

Feeling bold Tess stepped forward. “Well I might just come in and wait then,” she said.

Liz’s frowned further. “I don’t think that’s a very good idea,” she told her blocking her entrance into Max’s apartment. “I’m not sure how much longer he’s going to be and he isn’t expecting you.”

“I’m sure he won’t mind though,” Tess bashed her eyelids.

“I mind,” Liz snapped.

“Well this isn’t your apartment is it?” Tess replied icily.

“Might as well be, I live here most of the time and I’ll be moving in permanently in a few weeks,” Liz grinned.

Tess’s smile faltered.

“You know what maybe you should come in Tess, I think its time you and I had a little hear to heart,” Liz suggested then and took a step back so Tess could enter.

Tess hesitated for a few seconds before walking into the apartment. She wasted not time looking around as she followed Liz towards the couches. There were photos everywhere of people she didn’t know, but assumed that they were Max’s family, and there were also quite a few of him with Liz.

“Max has a nice apartment, I’m not surprised though,” Tess commented.

“Yes he has great taste which is why he would never look twice at someone like you,” Liz replied.

“Excuse me,” Tess said shocked.

“Look Tess lets be honest here. You obviously like Max which is why you blatantly keep throwing yourself at him but I’m here to tell you that it’s not going to work,” Liz said.

“And why’s that?” Tess asked angrily.

“Because he’s mine,” Liz said sternly.

“That can change easily,” Tess smirked.

“It can but it won’t,” Liz told her. “We’ve been best friends for 25 years and we’re about to have babies together Tess, that’s just something you and your fake tits can’t compete with. So I’d suggest you save yourself the embarrassment and give up.”

“Why would I do that Liz?” Tess continued to smirk. “It’s not like Max doesn’t like the attention I give him, nor has he told me he’s not interested.”

“That’s because he’s too nice to tell you keep your skanky ass away from him,” Liz snapped.

“No I don’t think that’s it at all,” Tess replied as finally took a seat on Max’s couch.

“It’s your funeral,” Liz shrugged. She knew eventually Tess would try Max’s last nerve and she knew it would be ugly when she did.

Liz turned to the door expectantly when she heard keys in the lock.

Max grinned when he saw her. “Hey gorgeous how was your day?” He asked striding towards her so he could take her in his arms.

“Oh it was great until about ten minutes ago,” Liz replied and gestured to Tess.

Max’s smile quickly deflated as he looked at Tess who was smiling sexily at him.

“Hi Max,” she waved.

“What the hell are you doing in my house?” Max snapped.

Liz grinned and looked at Tess. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” she said as she took a seat on the lounge to enjoy the show.

Twenty Two

“Oh God Liz,” Max groaned as Liz ravaged his body. She had practically torn his clothes off before throwing him down on the couch to have her way him. Right now, she was riding his cock to oblivion.

“Ah yes, yes,” Liz cried as she rode Max to completion before collapsing on his chest in exhaustion.

When Max caught his breath he couldn’t help but chuckle.

“What?” Liz grinned pulling back to look at him.

“This, us,” he said. “I can’t believe that after everything we’ve been through and all my planning that this is how we end up,” he grins.

“I know,” Liz agreed. “How did we end up like this?” Liz asked then.

“Well…” Max chuckled.

Half an hour ago

Max couldn’t wait to get home to see Liz. He knew through Michael that the girls had finished shopping already and he hoped Liz would be waiting for her back at his apartment.

He found sitting on the couch when he walked through the door and he smiled. “Hey gorgeous how was your day?” He asked making his way towards her quickly.

“Oh it was great until about ten minutes ago,” Liz replied and gestured to the couch across from her.

Max froze in his tracks and he frowned at his blonde colleague. His first thought was how the hell did she find out where he lived which was followed closely by what the hell she was doing there?

Either way, he didn’t care. He was pissed that she was there uninvited and interrupting time he wanted to spend with Liz. “What the hell are you doing here?” He snapped at Tess.

He watched at Tess’s eyes went wide and her mouth opened to respond to him, but no words came out.

He turned to Liz then, “Are you ok?” He asked her. He was worried that Tess may have done or said something to upset her.

Liz simply smiled, “I’m fine. Tess and I were just having a little heart to heart about why you would never be interested in someone like her.”

Max smiled and scratched his ear nervously. “Yeah?”

“Yeah,” Liz grinned, “just thought Tess might like 25 years of insight.”

Max nodded then before turning back to Tess who was watching the two interact. “So Tess?” He asked again.

“I just wanted to drop by to say hi,” she replied lamely.

“Right, well that’s nice but next time don’t,” he said bluntly.

“Max…” she started.

“Look Tess it’s obvious that you seem to want something more than to be my colleague but I want to make it clear to you that I’m not interested.”

“You don’t give off that vibe, Max,” she tried to smile.

“I’m pretty sure that I’ve never done or said anything to give you the wrong idea, I have only tried to help you fit into the firm and do a job that you quite obviously aren’t capable of doing. Next time I’ll let you fall on your ass.”

Tess frowned.

“Told you so,” Liz couldn’t help but gloat.

“Oh shut it,” Tess snapped at Liz.

“Don’t you dare talk to her like that,” Max growled.

“If the two of you are so happy together how come no one at worked even knew you were dating?” Tess asked then.

“Because I like to keep my personal life to myself,” Max swiftly replied.

“I don’t believe you,” she said.

“Well I don’t care,” Max said, “I’m in love with Liz and we’re together, period. Accept it and move on,” he snapped.

On the couch, Liz’s eyes went wide. Had Max really said he loved her like that so openly to someone else?

One look at Max and Liz realised that he hadn’t realised what he had said and she smiled.

“So let me show you the door Tess,” Max said then walking over to Tess and assisting her off the lounge and towards the door.

“But Max…” she tried to protest.

“There are no buts Tess, I’m not interested. Buy a clue already,” he said shoving her gently out the door.

He shut the door soundly in her face then before turning to face Liz with a sigh. Liz was sitting on the couch with a grin on her face staring at Max.

“Did you mean it?” She asked him.

“What?” Max asked as he walked towards her.

“You told Tess you were in love with me,” she whispered.

“I did, didn’t I?” Max asked sheepishly falling into the couch next to Liz.

“Yeah,” Liz smiled.

“Well yeah it’s true,” he whispered.

“It is?” Liz asked. “You love me…”

“I love you, Liz,” he said reaching for her hand and entwining their fingers together.

“Like a best friend right?” She asked needing to be sure.

“No, I’m pretty sure what I feel is very unbest friend like,” Max grinned.

“Yeah?” She asked hopefully.

“Yeah.”

Before Max had a chance to utter another word after that Liz was on him. Her lips pressed insistently against his until he opened and soon they were lying on his couch.

“That’s right,” Liz sighed.

Max ran a hand through Liz’s hair as he watched her with her eyes closed against his chest.

“Liz?” He questioned.

“Yeah?”

“We kind of covered my feelings but didn’t really get to yours,” he said quietly.
Liz sat up and her mouth opened in shock. “Oh my God Max I’m so sorry.”

Max smiled, “its ok I guess…” he trailed off.

“Max?” She whispered and waited until he looked in her eyes.

“You have to know how I feel about you, how much you mean to me,” she said.

“But you don’t love me do you?” He asked sadly.

“No Max, I’m madly in love with you,” she grinned. “And I’ve wanted to tell you for so long now…”

Max silenced Liz with an earth shattering kiss.

“Wow,” she sighed when the kiss ended.

“This is not what I had planned,” Liz told him.

“What did you have planned?” He asked.

“Oh it involved the sexiest lingerie I’ve ever seen and loving you into submission before I told you, that way you would be too tired to reject me on the spot.”

Max chuckled, “This is so surreal; my plan was similar except I was thinking dinner, candles, massages…”

“Oh we definetely should go through with these plans,” Liz groaned.

“I love you Liz,” Max whispered.

“I love you too Max,” Liz replied.

***

“Do we have to get out of bed?” Liz mumbled from under the covers. She was wrapped tightly in Max’s arms and she never wanted to move. They had made love countless times that night before taking every chance they had to express the way they truly felt about each other and feeling free about finally being able to be honest with the most important person in their life.

“No,” Max whispered against Liz’s neck.

“What time is it?” Liz asked then.

“Let’s not look at the clock, because as soon as we do we’ll have to face reality and that means that I’ll have to get up and go to work when I just want to spend the day in bed with the woman I love.”

“You could call in sick,” Liz grinned, “I have the day off and I have absolutely no objects to spending the day in bed with the man I love,” Liz grinned.

“I think I could manage that,” he whispered as he kissed her neck.

Liz rolled over so that their lips could meet in a proper kiss.

“Why did we wait so long to do this?” She asked as he looked up into his beautiful amber eyes.

Max studied Liz as he contemplated how to answer. “I don’t know,” he replied honestly. “I have no idea why it took countless failed relationships, or hundreds of girls that were never good enough because they weren’t like you. Hell I have no idea Liz why it took me 25 years to realise that you are the love of my life,” he told her passionately. “But now that I know I’m going to hold onto you, and to this with everything I have.”

By the time Max was finished Liz had tears in her eyes.

“Was that answer ok?” He asked then and Liz giggled.

“It was perfect, you’re perfect,” she told him.

“And why do you think it took this long?” He asked then wanting to now her insight.

“Because we’re Max and Liz, we’re soul mates just like Dawson and Joey, and Lucas and Peyton but I was having trouble working out which couple we were. Because Dawson and Joey, they might be soul mates but everyone knew it was Pacey that she was meant to be with, and that Dawson and Joey were only ever destined to be friends. Where as on the other hand Lucas and Peyton had to suffer through a series of other relationships and hurdles to find each other,” Liz explained.

Max grinned at her comparison to their friendship and relationship to that of fictional characters on televisions shows.

“So which couple are we?” He asked.

“Well I think what I finally realised is that we’re not either of them. We’re Max and Liz and we’re soul mates who maybe just needed to be best friends for 25 years before we realised that we were meant to be so much more.”

Max nodded, “Then why do you think all our friends and family knew we were meant to be together?” He smiled.

“Maybe they saw something between us that we weren’t ready to see.”

“Well I’m ready now,” Max replied.

“Yeah,” Liz smiled, “I’m ready too.”

Part Twenty Three

Max looked at Dave Harrison’s office door again and sighed. He knew he needed to go in there and talk to him but he was dreading it.

After discussing all their feelings, Liz and Max had sat down and talked about Tess, and what Max needed to do about her.

It was obvious that Tess wasn’t the type of girl that took no for an answer. The fact that she had found his home address somehow showed that clearly. So they had decided that Max needed to tell Dave what was going on. That way Max would no longer be forced together with Tess because of work situations, and also because Max was no longer prepared to carry her and was going to suggest to Dave that she be let go, or at the very least demoted to a more junior position to make way for someone with more experience and capability.

But Max knew that it wouldn’t just end there. He had also decided that he needed to speak to Tess again. He knew he had been angry when he had shown up home to find her waiting for him, and he had been fairly harsh which was unusual for him. But in the light of day he wanted to make sure that Tess was clear that there was never going to be anything more than a professional relationship between them.

Finally working up the courage Max headed towards Dave’s door. He stopped next to Dave’s secretary and smiled.

“Hi Sharon, is Dave available?” He asked.

“Actually he has Ms Harding with him at the moment but they shouldn’t be too long. Would you like me to call you when he’s free?” She asked.

“Yes please,” Max nodded. “I’m free most of the afternoon.”

Just as he was about to walk away Dave’s door opened and Tess walked out.

Max watched slightly disturbed as she looked at him with a smirk.

He looked up then and found Dave standing in the doorway with a frown.

“Max can I talk to you?” He asked.

Max nodded and headed into the office.

“I wanted to speak to you too,” he told him as he took a seat.

“I just had a disturbing conversation with Tess Harding, Max.” Dave started, “and to be honest I don’t know what to make of it. I’ve known you for a long time Max, I consider you a son but if what Tess told me is true…”

“Hold up Dave, what are you talking about?” Max asked clearly confused, and to be honest a little alarmed.

Dave sighed, “Tess told me what happened last night.”

“She did?” Max asked surprised.

“Yes and I have to tell you Max that it’s very inappropriate.”

“Excuse me?” Max laughed.

“You have no right to use your position to pressure Tess into a relationship with you Max, and I don’t understand why you would want to given the situation with Liz...”

“Dave I think there has been a misunderstanding,” Max interrupted.

“How so?” Dave asked curiously.

“I’m not sure what Tess told you but I wanted to speak to you today about Tess and her inappropriate behaviour towards me.”

“Go on,” Dave nodded.

Max almost sighed in relief. He had no idea what Tess was doing but he was glad that Dave was at least willing to hear him out.

“Since Tess started here I’ve gotten the impression from her that she has been interested in more than a professional relationship with me. I’ve done my very best to ignore it. From the see-through shirts she wears into my office to the constant requests to work with me after hours. At your dinner party last week she actually had the gall to move Liz’s name place from next to mine to down the other end of the table, replacing it with her own. She completely embarrassed Larissa.

But last night I came home to my apartment, which I share with Liz, to find her in my living room. She had been completely rude to Liz practically barged in uninvited. I’m afraid by this stage I’d had enough Dave and I laid into her. She has no right to invade my personal space, or my personal time. I wont stand for it Dave,” Max explained.

“You say she came to you apartment?” Dave asked clearly confused.

“Yes, Liz can confirm it,” Max nodded.

“That’s quite a different story to the one she told me Max,” Dave admitted.

“May I ask what lie she fed you?” Max asked.

“She told me that you’ve been making up excuses to spend time with her after hours. Finding excuses to touch her innocently. She said at first she was flattered but then you showed up at her apartment last night, drunk, and you groped her.”

“You’re kidding me?” Max shouted outraged. “I would never do something like that Dave, ever.”

“That’s why I was so confused Max, it was very out of character for you but she seemed so sincere, even said that she hated that she had to come to me but she felt she had no other choice.”

“She’s lying,” Max spat then.

Dave nodded. “I see that now but it’s her word against yours Max,” he sighed.

“You’re going to take her side?” Max asked shocked.

“I don’t want to but if she pursues this…”

“Then I can produce an alibi and witness to confirm my whereabouts and hers last night,” Max added.

Dave sat back in his chair and contemplated the situation. He believed Max but if he fired Tess and accused her of lying then she could sue him, something that neither the firm, nor he personally needed.

“Maybe I should interview some of the other staff,” he suggested then.

“Like who?” Max asked.

“The secretaries and some of the junior lawyers who work on the floor. They may have heard or seen something to confirm what you’re saying,” he explained.

“They can confirm how bad her work is, another reason she should be sacked,” Max grumbled.

“True,” he agreed thinking that would be a good reason to add to her dismissal letter. Poor performance and sexual harassment.

Max sat back, his anger boiling.

“How would she get my address?” He voiced aloud then.

“Sorry?” Dave asked.

“She found out where I lived, how?” He asked Dave.

“The directory?” Dave suggested.

“I’m unlisted, number and address. I have PO Box for my mail because it gets lost in the apartment complex,” he explained.

“You can get a lot of information off the net…” he trailed off.

“Or you could go into your boss’s office whilst you’re working after hours and look up personnel files,” Max said.

Dave’s eyes widened at the statement. “But that’s illegal.”

Max grinned. “Don’t you have security surveillance in the building?”

Dave nodded.

“I’ll call the security company and get them to look at the tapes since she started working here,” he nodded.

“Thank you Dave,” Max said then.

“I just want to get this worked out Max.” He smiled.

“Me too,” he agreed.

***

“She what?!!” Liz screamed on the other end of the phone.

Max had just gotten finished telling her what Tess had told Dave.

“She did but hopefully by the time we’re done looking at the surveillance and Dave talks to some of the staff we’ll have enough to fire her without any worry of a law suit.”

“That woman is un believable. If I wasn’t pregnant-” Liz fumed.

“I know baby, but don’t worry. Once I have the proof I’ll take pleasure in kicking her ass out of this building and making sure that no one in this city will hire her,” Max assured her.

***

Tess was grinning like a Cheshire cat as Max walked past her.

“Hi Max,” she sing songed.

“You’re going down Tess,” Max whispered as he walked past causing her to stop and frown.

Max chuckled in her face before continuing to walk on.

***

It only took a day for Dave to interview a few staff members and for the security company to send him a report on the surveillance. When he had it all he called Max into his office.

By that stage Max could barely concentrate, he was that anxious.

“So what did you find?” Max asked.

“Well your secretary was very helpful. Seems Tess has been asking a lot of questions about your personal life and making various comments.”

“Really?” Max had always though he had a good relationship with his secretary and was disappointed she didn’t inform him.

“The others confirmed your comments about her work; I also took the liberty of calling some of the clients she has been taking care of. They didn’t speak that highly of her either.” He explained.

“And the surveillance?” Max asked.

“Last week,” Dave picked up the DVD and threw it down on the desk. “It shows her coming in here, and then while she is in here going through my filing cabinet that holds the personnel files, she writes something down, replaces the file and leaves,” he says.

“So we’ve got her?” Max grins.

“Yes we do,” Dave nodded.

“Excellent,” Max sighs in relief.

“I took the liberty of calling her father this morning to inform him what was happening. He’s a good friend and I gave Tess this job as a favour as such.” Max nodded in understanding.

“He understands the situation I’m in.”

“So what will you do?” Max asked.

“I’m having Sharon type up her dismissal letter as we speak. I’ll give her two weeks pay and she’ll be out of the office by five pm,” Dave informed Max.

Max blew out his the breath he had been holding. “Wow what a relief,” he smiled.

“I bet,” Dave replied.

“Thank you for believing in me and getting this sorted out.”

“It’s the least I can do after all the hard work and loyalty you’ve shown me and this firm Max. You’re a partner now, and like I said I consider you a son.”

“Thank you,” Max smiled.

“Why don’t you take the afternoon off? It might be best if you’re not around this afternoon.”

“Good idea. Liz is off. I might go home and surprise her,” he agreed. Although he would have taken great pleasure in seeing Tess’s face after Dave sacked her, he knew Dave’s suggestion was the best.

“Good idea,” Dave smiled happy to see Max so happy and in love.

Max was almost out the door when Dave called out to him, stopping him.

“Maybe you could help with the interview process this time?” He grinned knowingly.

Max chuckled. “Yeah definitely,” he agreed.

Max packed up his things then and only paused briefly as he passed Tess sitting in her office. He waved at her and smiled when she looked up, and Tess simply frowned.

If possible the best part of the whole situation was seeing Tess sitting there with absolutely no idea of what was about to come her way. She thought she had beaten him but she underestimated the people around her.

As Max walked into the elevator and couldn’t help but be happy that he would never have to set eyes on Tess Harding every again.

Part Twenty Four

Three Months Later (6 Months Pregnant)

Liz studied the clock again for the third time in the last hour wondering where the hell Max could possibly be.

As though he could read her mind, Max raced through the front door looking completely deshelved.

“I’m so sorry I’m late,” he said but the words died on his lips when he caught sight of the look on Liz’s face.

It was the third time in a matter of weeks that he had turned up extremely late for something, but tonight that something was just a little too important for her to wipe under the carpet like she had the over few times.

“Where were you?” She asked.

Max squirmed at her question.

“Can this wait?” He said, “because we should get going or we won’t make it,” he added.

Liz felt tears spring to her eyes. “I didn’t think you cared that much,” she whispered. “Otherwise you wouldn’t have shown up late to begin with.”

“Of course I do,” Max replied.

Two months earlier Liz had moved into Max’s flat with him permanently and up until a few weeks ago, things had been bliss, or so she thought anyway.

They had officially been a couple now for three months and for the most part they were the happiest three months of their lives, for both of them. Sure they’re were some teething problems that all new relationship experience but it was nothing that they couldn’t over come by just talking to each other, which was something that they found easy. That was why Liz couldn’t understand what was going on with Max now.

He had seemed so distant with her the past month, ditching her at the last minute, spending a lot of time at work again and even though she tried not too Liz was starting to suspect that he had changed his mind about everything, but most importantly that he regretted telling her he was in love with her.

Despite her best effort to stop them, her tears fell harder as she contemplated the last thought.

“Liz baby I’m so sorry,” Max apologised as he saw her tears. He moved towards the couch and sat beside her.

“Did I do something wrong?” She cried.

“What?” Max asked shocked, “No of course not.” He assured her and reached over to try to take her hand but Liz struggled against it and kept it out of his reach. She couldn’t think straight when he was touching her and right now she needed to think.

“Do you regret being with me?” She asked then deciding that maybe the bandaid approach worked best in this type of situation.

“No!” Max cried horrified. “Of course not, what would give you that idea?”

“You’re… you’re never around anymore and you spend all your time at work,” she sobbed.

Max closed his eyes in horror as she revealed her thoughts to him. He had no idea his actions had been causing Liz to think, or to feel, the way she was and the worst part was that his actions were full of good intentions.

For the past two months, Max had been searching for a new place for them to move into once the twins were born as a surprise for Liz. When he had been simply searching it had been easy to do that without Liz knowing but for the last few weeks, it had gotten more difficult. The top floor of their building had just been put up for sale. After taking one look at the space and the price, Max knew it was perfect for them, and that more importantly that Liz would love it. He knew she didn’t want to move out of their apartment complex unless they were moving into a house with a backyard, and right now they didn’t really want to move out of the city which is what they would have to do.

The apartment on the top floor had three bedrooms and an extremely large kitchen and living area. The only downside was that it required some renovations, which is what Max was trying to organise, and why he had been late.

Max moved onto his knees in between Liz legs and gripped her chin softly in his hands so he could make her look at him.

“I love you so much,” he whispered. “I could never regret being with you guys,” he added as he caressed her very large stomach.

“Then why aren’t you here with us?” She asked in a whisper.

Max knew what she meant. “I’m sorry I’ve been forgetting about things lately and showing up late but it’s not what you think at all,” he told her.

“Then what is it?” She asked calming down slightly.

Max smiled then, “It was supposed to be a surprise for you,” he admitted.

“What?” She asked.

“Come with me somewhere?” He asked then hopefully. One small trip and he would have everything sorted out.

“Huh?” Liz asked confused.

“I want to take you somewhere and show you why I’ve been so distracted lately.”

“Ok,” she agreed.

Leaning in Max did his best to wipe her tears with the pads of his fingers.

He stood up then, took Liz’s hand and helped her off the lounge and out their apartment door.

Liz’s confusion grew when Max pressed the up button in the elevator instead of down.

When they reached the top floor Max took Liz’s hand and led her out until they were standing in the small and quite hallway.

“Max what are we doing?” She asked.

Instead of answering, Max pulled out a key from his pocket and put it in the door.

“Why do you have a key? Whose apartment is this?” She asked.

Max pushed the door open and led her through the door. “Actually its ours,” he answered her as he flicked on the light.

Liz gasped. The large room was completely empty but she could see the city lights shining in from the French doors that lined one wall leading out onto a balcony.

Max smiled at her reaction. “I know it doesn’t look like much yet…”

“I love it,” she whispered.

Max grinned as he stepped behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. He leaned down until his head was level with Liz’s. “There are three bedrooms,” he explained, “The main has en ensuite.”

Liz’s face lit up. “Show me,” she told him. “Show me everything.”

Max laughed, “You really love it?” He asked.

Liz turned her head do she could kiss him, “I love it and I love you.”

***

“Can you forgive me?” Liz whispered in the darkness of their bedroom later that night.

After showing Liz around the entire apartment they had gone back to Max’s and ordered Thai while they talked and planned all the things they wanted to do in the apartment.

“What for?” Max asked.

“For doubting you,” she said rolling over so she could look at him. “For being a typical girl,” she snorted.

Max followed her lead and also rolled on to his side so they were face to face.

“Liz, I don’t blame you for getting so upset. I’ve been totally flaking on you lately and to miss our first birthing class…”

Truthfully, Max was ashamed with himself for that. Tonight was an important night for them and he had gotten completely sidetracked talking to some contractors about getting the bathrooms in the apartment re-done.

“Yeah…” she whispered.

“Can you forgive me?” He asked then.

“Always,” Liz whispered. “But you better not flake on us again Max…”

“No I definetely won’t,” he quickly responded. “Now that we’re doing this together I don’t have to hide things from you.”

“I love the apartment Max, I really do but for the first time in our lives I felt out of the loop in your life and I can’t tell you how bad that felt.”

Max leaned in and kissed her forehead. “I know…” he whispered.

“I love you and trust you,” she said then. “Please don’t ever make me doubt that trust,” she pleaded.

“Never. I promise never,” he agreed.

***

“Wow,” Maria said gob smacked.

“I know,” Liz grinned next to her.

“Max man this place is seriously unreal,” Michael added.

Maria put a squealing Adam down then and he immediately toddled off to explore.

“You have so much to work with,” Isabel admired.

“I know,” Liz grinned.

“You sure were lucky to get your hands on this Max,” Alex said as he looked out at the view they had.

Max chuckled. “You wont believe how lucky.” Even Liz had been amazed when Max had told her the story about the apartment. He had been in the lift with the realtor who was going up for his first look. Max had been curious as to who was selling and they had gotten talking. Before he knew it, he was standing exactly where he was now and he knew he had to have it.

“I’m glad you guys aren’t moving out of the city,” Isabel spoke up. She had been worried that they would move out near her parents and she hated the idea of them being too far away.

“Me too,” Maria agreed.

“Looks like you’ve got a lot of work to do before you can move in though,” Michael figured. He was a builder by trade so he had a pretty good idea of the work ahead of them.

“Yeah we want to replace the bathrooms and we need to paint and repolish the floor boards.”

Michael nodded. “Need some help?” He asked.

Max grinned. “I thought you’d never ask,” he said.

“I’m game too although I’m not known for my handyman skills,” Alex grinned.

“Well I’ve already lined up a contractor to do the bathrooms so we just need to decide what we want,” Max explained. “But I was planning on doing the painting and polishing myself.”

“Well with all of us pitching in we’ll have this done in no time.”

“Great,” Liz smiled as she rubbed her stomach. “I can’t wait to move in,” she beamed at Max.

“Me either,” he said kissing her head. “Me too.”

Twenty-Five

Eight Months Pregnant

“What do you think?” Liz asked Max as they stood in the room that they would bring their children home too.

The nursery was painted a sunny yellow and the two cribs, change table and drawers were all a white wood. So far, there wasn’t really a theme to the room since Liz had decided she wanted to wait until she knew the sex of the babies before picking something.

“It’s perfect,” Max smiled.

He wrapped his strong arms around Liz then bringing his hands to rest over her extremely large stomach. He could hardly believe that it would only be a matter of weeks now until their babies arrived.

“I think we’re ready,” Liz declared then.

She had finished work a few weeks ago when she was no longer able to get around. Her feet were constantly swollen and the babies were now so big that the pressure on her back made it impossible to stand for too long. It came as no surprise to their doctor though, who assumed that Liz would have been bed ridden long before now considering her size.

The apartment was now completely finished. Max never dreamed when he found the apartment two months ago that they be in by the time Liz was ready to give birth. But with the help of their wonderful friends and some great contactors the bathrooms were complete, the floors polished and they had completely painted the entire apartment.

Now this weekend everyone was pitching in to help them move all the furniture from the apartment downstairs, and some that Liz had in storage from her apartment into their new place. Max knew that there would be nowhere near enough furniture for the new place but he wasn’t worried about that at the moment, he just wanted to be in and settled before Liz had the twins.

“Come on lets go and get a good nights sleep, tomorrow is going to be a long day,” Max encouraged.

Reluctantly Liz nodded. She couldn’t wait until she could unpack all the small clothes and toys that she had for their babies into the room.

“You have to promise me that if I let you come up tomorrow that you’re going to take it easy. No lifting anything and no standing all day,” Max told her as they made their way in the lift to his apartment downstairs.

“You can’t expect me to just sit and watch everyone else moving us into the apartment?” Liz huffed.

“That’s exactly what I expect. You can give instructions while you sit with your feet up,” Max told her.

“But that’s not fair,” Liz objected.

Max stopped at the apartment door and looked at his beautiful girlfriend with a loving yet stern smile. “If you don’t’ agree I’ll have my mum come and take you away for the day,” he threatened.

Liz scrunched up her nose in annoyance. She knew Max was right. She had barely done anything that day other than instruct Max where she wanted the babies furniture and she was exhausted.

“Ok,” she sighed.

“Good,” Max grinned and kissed her nose.

“Now how about I pour you a bath for that aching back of yours?” He suggested.

“How did you know it was aching?” She asked as she nodded.

“You were rubbing it the entire waddle up the hallway,” he chuckled.

“Waddle!” Liz cried. “I do not waddle.”

Max laughed, “Yes my sweetheart you do. But you do it looking absolutely gorgeous.”

“How much longer again?” Liz asked then as she sunk into the living room couch, she knew she wouldn’t be able to get out of it later but right now she didn’t care.

“Well the Doc would like you to go another couple of weeks,” he replied sitting down on the coffee table and taking one of her small feet into his hands and rubbing it.

“But I’m so fat and tired,” she cried.

Liz’s emotions were getting the better of her lately. She felt fat, ugly and useless and she wondered how Max could even stand to look at her let alone sleep next to her every night. On top of that, they hadn’t been able to have sex for the past month and she was more that a little sexually frustrated, she knew Max felt the same but he wouldn’t let her do anything to help him either.

“Will you have a bath with me?” She cried.

“Of course,” he agreed. “I’ll go pour it. Don’t go anywhere,” he smiled.

“Huh, like I could get out of this lounge on my own even if I wanted to,” she called out after him.

Ten minutes later Max returned and helped Liz off the couch and into the bathroom. He helped peel her cotton sundress off her body before assisting her to step out of her panties, and removing her bra.

Max quickly peeled of his own clothes then before helping Liz to step into the bath of bubbles he had made. He supported her weight as she melted down into it before climbing in behind her.

“Oh this is bliss,” she moaned.

It wasn’t just the bath it was being pressed up against Max as well.

Max began massaging her lower back then. “Does that feel good?” He asked.

“Yes, thank you,” Liz whispered.

They sat in the soaking tub in silence for a while. It was a comfortable silence, one that was obtained from years of friendship and Max and Liz were proud that they had mastered it.

“You know,” Max finally broke the silence, “we haven’t decided on names for these two yet. We should get to that.” He said rubbing her large stomach.

Liz sighed, “You’re right, I could go into labour any moment,” she said thinking that if she hoped for it enough it might happen.

“I hope not because you’re having a c-section and I don’t know about you but I would prefer that it isn’t rushed because you’re in labour,” Max replied.

Liz groaned. “You’re right,” she agreed.

“I love these babies but I just can’t wait to get them out,” she admitted then.

“I know sweetie and they will be with us soon,” Max assured her. He thought she was being a very good sport about the whole thing. She was absolutely massive and he had no idea how to get her bed ridden, something he would prefer, but he wasn’t going to get his way as long as Liz could still get out of bed.

“Ok, so we decided not to find out so that means that we need 2 of each name,” Max voiced loudly.

“I’ve always love Jordan and it could be a girl or a boys name,” Liz said.

“Jordan…” Max mused, “I like it.” He smiled then.

“I though two names with the same letter would be good, what about Mason and Madeline?” He suggested.

Liz grinned as she thought of the cartoon she used to watch as a girl called Madeline. “I like Mason but I’m not sure about Madeline.”

“Well that easy to fix, I like Madison and Meredith as well. Or there’s McKenzie, McKenna,” he continued.

“I love McKenna,” Liz grinned.

“Oh what about Matthew if it’s two boys. Matthew and Mason?”

“That could work,” Liz nodded.

There was so many names, and Liz was getting a headache just thinking about all the different combinations. She questioned their decision to keep the babies sex a secret then. They could be having identical or fraternal twins at this stage since they found out from Liz’s parents that twins ran in her family as well as Max’s.

“I think I want to wait till I see them. Then we’ll know the perfect names,” she told Max.

“We’ll see their little faces, the perfect mix of you and me and the names will just come to us,” she smiled.

“Ok,” he agreed as he caressed her cheek. “Ok,” she smiled again.

***

“Over there,” Liz pointed and waited for Max and Michael to place the large cupboard down against the wall, but once there she wasn’t quite sure she liked the where it was. “Actually wait, maybe over there,” she pointed again.

Once again, Max and Michael picked the cupboard up and moved it to where Liz pointed. It was extremely heavy and they both sighed in relief when they placed it down again.

“No I think it looked better in the first location,” Liz shook her head from the couch.

“Are you sure because unless you want to move this thing yourself Liz, this is the last time I’m moving it!” Michael snapped.

It had been the same thing all day with every piece of furniture and Michael wished he was built more like Alex which meant that he was given the job to carry the heavier boxes that the girls couldn’t handle instead of furniture with Max.

Max glared at Michael after his tirade as he saw that Liz’s eyes had immediately filled with tears.

“Oh no Liz please don’t cry,” Michael rushed to say when he also saw the tears in her eyes.

“What did you do Michael?” Maria frowned when she walked in the room.

“Nothing,” Michael immediately denied.

Max moved to Liz’s side and kissed her forehead. “You ok?” He asked.

Liz shook her head. “I’m sorry,” she apologised to Michael.

“No I am. I shouldn’t have snapped like that, but it’s really heavy,” he replied.

“That’s ok, and I would help move it if I could,” she wiped her eyes.

“Yeah right munchkin,” Michael chuckled at the idea of little Liz moving anything so big.

“Are you laughing at me?” Liz cried outraged.

Max’s glare at Michael intensified and this time Maria joined in.

“No not at all,” Michael immediately replied and looked away.

Liz rubbed her stomach again, she had been feeling extremely uncomfortable all afternoon and fighting with Michael was only making it worse.

Max seeing her wince slightly moved towards her again with concern. “I think you’ve had enough for today, let me take you home to bed,” he suggested.

“No,” Liz whined. “I’m not going home to bed while everyone else moves our things into our house.”

“Lizzie think of the babies,” Maria stepped in trying to appease her.

Liz’s hand automatically moved over the babies protectively. She had a doctor’s appointment on Monday and she was praying that her Doctor would be convinced to let her have the babies that week. But while she rubbed her abdomen she had a sneaking suspicion it wouldn’t wait that long.

“Actually Max I think I want you to take me to the hospital,” she spoke up.

“What!” Max asked confused.

“Something feels off, I think I should go and see someone tonight,” she told him.

Normally she wouldn’t be so worried but she knew it would be best if she didn’t go into labour.

“Is everything ok, what’s wrong?” Max began to panic.

Liz smiled at her boyfriend. “It’s ok,” she rested her hand over his. “I just have a feeling that we should go now or we’ll be rushing there in a few hours that’s all.”

“Ok,” Max agreed.

“Maybe you should have a shower first,” Liz suggested when she caught a whiff of him.

“Are you sure?” Max asked unsure.

“Positive. You go and do that while Maria helps me pack a small bag.”

“Ok,” he nodded and after sharing a look with Maria, Max rushed off.

“What’s going on chica?” Maria asked taking a seat next to her.

“I don’t know but something feels different. I’m not sure if it’s labour or not but I know that it’s best if I don’t go into full blown labour. I just want to go and make sure that’s all,” Liz explained.

“So you’re just playing it safe?” Maria checked.

“Yes,” Liz smiled.

She certainly wasn’t going to admit that she had been feeling what she now suspected were contractions all day. She knew that Max would go ballistic knowing that little titbit.

In record time Max showered and changed and Liz waited.

“Should we come?” Isabel asked.

“No Max will call you,” Liz told her.

“Ok well good luck,” she replied.

“Thanks,” she grinned. “I have a feeling next time you see me I’ll have two new Evans to introduce you too,” she added.

Both Maria and Isabel oohhed and ahhed then and the boys chuckled.

“See you soon,” Maria called out as they disappeared out of the apartment.

Part Twenty-Six

“How are you feeling Liz?” Doctor Marshall asked as he walked into the room.

Liz was lying on the bed in a hospital gown waiting for someone to come in and see her.

“I want the babies out,” she declared. She had even decided on the trip over here that she wanted to have the babies that night regardless of whether she was in labour or not. She had had enough, it was time for her children to come out and join her and Max.

He laughed at her as he put on some gloves and took a seat in between Liz’s legs which were in stirrups.

“You’ve still got a few weeks,” he told her then.

“No I don’t. Haven’t you seen how big I am? I’m having twins there is no way they can grow anymore there is just no room,” she said exasperated.

He laughed again as he got up and moved to her side where he began pressing gently against her abdomen.

“So?” She asked when he finally took his hands away and went back to her chart.

“You’re in the early stages of labour,” he informed her.

“Alright,” Liz cried out overjoyed.

He smiled at her then, “Before you get to excited I want to try and talk to your doctor at the very least and maybe even do a scan. I want to make sure the babies are well enough developed, if not I might still be able to stop the contractions.”

“Ok,” she agreed knowing that the best interest of her children would always come first. “Can Max come in now?” She asked then.

“Sure. I’ll get the nurse to send in your husband,” he smiled before walking back out.

Liz opened her mouth to correct him but closed it just as quickly. She smiled; she liked the idea of Max being known as her husband.

She wasn’t still smiling about it when Max waked in.

“So?” He asked anxiously.

“I’m in the early stages of labour but the doctor wants to talk to Dr Davis and possibly do a scan before anything else.”

“Why?” He asked. “Is something wrong?”

“No I don’t think so. He just wants to make sure the babies are developed enough. If not he’ll try and stop my labour,” she informed him.

Max sighed in relief.

“Should I call your parents?”

“No let’s wait until we find out for sure what’s going to happen,” she replied.

Max smiled and leaned in kissing her lips gently. “I love you,” he whispered.

“I love you too,” she replied.

***

Liz and Max watched the screen mesmerised as Dr Marshall conducted the ultrasound.

“Ok Liz, Max. Everything looks great so I think we can do something about getting those little ones out tonight,” he spoke up with a smile.

“Really?” Liz’s eyes came alight.

“Yep,” he nodded.

“Your contractions are moving along steadily so I will make arrangements to get you into the OR as quickly as possible. I suggest if you want to call anyone you do it now Max then we’ll get you all decked out so you can scrub in with us,” he smiled.

Max nodded mutely. He couldn’t believe that he would be a father in a matter of hours. When he had gotten up that morning he had never dreamed he would be a daddy in the morning.

“Go and ring everyone,” Liz said breaking him out of his daze.

“Right,” he nodded.

Liz smiled, “Go on Daddy.” She encouraged again and this time Max smiled.

“I’m going,” he laughed as he rushed out of the room and towards the waiting room where he could turn his phone on.

***

“Okay we’re getting ready to remove the first baby I’ll call you when we’re ready so you can come down and cut the umbilical chord ok Max?” Dr Marshall asked.

Max nodded.

Max looked to Liz and smiled, “I can’t believe we’re about to become parents,” he whispered to Liz.

Liz smiled, “I know, I just hope they’re healthy,” she added then worried that there was something she might or might not have done during the pregnancy.

“We’re ready for you Max,” Dr Marshall said then.

“Go on,” Liz grinned.

Hesitantly Max approached just as they pulled the first of his children from Liz’s body, “Congratulations it’s a boy,” he said proudly.

“Did you hear that Liz? It’s a boy,” Max repeated and Liz giggled.

Max cut the chord and the nurses took the small baby and placed his on Liz’s chest. “There you go mummy,” she whispered.

Max quickly followed his hand reaching out to touch his son just like Liz was.

“He’s so beautiful,” Liz whispered.

“He is,” Max agreed.

“Max we’re almost ready for you again,” Dr Marshall informed him.

“Go and get our other baby Max,” Liz smiled with tears in her eyes. She was awed by the little thing lying on her chest; she couldn’t believe that he was actually here.

Max waited as Dr Marshall pulled the second baby, “It’s a girl,” he declared and Max’s grin brightened. He would have been happy with either sex but now they had a perfect set.

He cut the umbilical chord again and the nurses once again placed the baby on Liz’s chest next to her brother.

Max had tears in his eyes when he walked over to Liz. “Look at them, they’re perfect,” he said.

“I know,” she nodded her own tears pooling in her eyes. “I love you so much,” she declared. “Thank you for giving them to me.”

“I love you too Liz, so much,” Max whispered leaning in to her kiss her lovingly.

The nurses all watched with happy faces and even Dr Marshall couldn’t help but smile, it was why he loved his job, it was the most important one in the world, bringing new life into the world.

Max pulled back then and watched as Liz cuddled with their babies.

“Marry me?” He whispered then.

It wasn’t planned this way but it was the most right thing to ever leave his mouth.

Liz’s eyes snapped up to his in shock.

“What?” She blurted. Certainly she wasn’t hearing him right, he wasn’t asking her to marry him here and now?

“Marry me,” he whispered again. “I know this isn’t the most romantic of places or times but it’s the most important. Marry me Liz Parker, and complete the final pieces of our life?”

Liz was crying now and nodding. “Yes,” she told him.

“I have a ring,” he announced then, “but I don’t have it on me.”

“You have a ring?” She cried surprised.

“Yeah. I bought it last week. It was only a matter of time Parker,” he kissed her.

“Excuse me Liz but we’ll just take the babies and get them cleaned up now,” one of the nurses interrupted their moment.

“I’m getting married,” Liz blurted out.

“Really? Congratulations,” she told them.

“Thank you,” she grinned.

After surgery they wheeled Liz into a room while Max went to the waiting room where all their family and friends were gathered.

Maria was the first to notice him coming and rose to her feet.

“So?” She asked.

Max grinned; “We have a son and a daughter,” he told them.

The waiting room erupted into squeals of delight and congratulations then. “How’s Liz?” Nancy asked.

“She’s fine. They’re taking her to a room now and then they’ll bring the babies to us,” he explained.

It was very late in the evening now and most of the family expected not to be allowed in until the next day.

“Why don’t you all go home and come back tomorrow,” Max suggested wanting to have a little time with Liz and his children.

“Great idea,” Jeff agreed.

“Do you have names?”

Max shook his head, “Not yet, but I’m sure we will by the time you guys arrive in the morning.”

“Can I get you anything before I go?” Isabel offered.

“No I have everything I need right here,” Max continued to grin.

He wanted to share their engagement news with his friends and family but he wanted to wait until Liz was there with them.

Isabel kissed him again and so did Maria before they followed the parents out of the hospital.

Max made his way back into Liz’s room then. “Hi,” he whispered and sat down next to her.

Liz did her best to keep her eyes open but she was having a hard time. The drugs used during the birth were starting to take their toll.

“Go to sleep sweetheart,” he whispered kissing her forehead.

“No the babies…” She trailed off.

“They’ll be here with me until you wake up,” he smiled.

Slowly, Liz drifted off then and Max just sat and watched her until the nurses wheeled in two cribs holding his son and daughter.

Max rose to his feet and smiled when he saw them come in.

“Here you go daddy,” the nurse smiled. “We’ve prepared a couple of bottles for you, we thought Liz would be out of it for a couple of hours,” she said handing him the bottles.

“Can you show me how?” Max asked a little worried.

Max watched then as the nurse picked up his son and placed the bottle at an angle before bringing it to the baby’s small mouth. He immediately began suckling it.

“There you go,” she smiled and handed him over to Max. “Half way through remove the bottle and put him up over your shoulder until you feel him burp, and then again once he’s finished,” she explained. “Just rub his back gently.”

Max sat in the chair by Liz’s bed after that and fed his son.

“Hey there little guy,” he whispered, “Mummy and I are so happy to have you here with us,” he whispered.

He rocked him against his chest as he watched as his daughter began to squirm in her crib and he couldn’t help but wonder could life get any more perfect.

Part Twenty-Seven

“Max?” Liz called out when her eyes opened in the darkened room. At first, she didn’t remember where she was but the slight movement caused a significant amount of pain and she remembered.

Last night, she Liz Parker, had become a mother. Liz smiled brightly.

“Right here,” Max replied from his seat next to her.

He saw her wince, “You ok?” He asked.

“Just forgot where I was for a second,” she smiled as he sat next to her on the bed leaning in so he could kiss her.

“Did everyone go?” She asked.

“Yeah, hours ago, but they’ll be here as soon as visiting hours start,” he replied.

“When’s that?” Liz wondered.

“About 10 I think.”

Liz looked at the clock on the bedside table and winced again, it was nearly six.

“You must be exhausted,” she said.

Max smiled. “A little but I wouldn’t have missed this for the world,” he told her. “Your son is a little piggy Parker, he’s the first awake for a feed every time.”

“You’ve been feeding them?” She asked enviously. That was the thing about falling asleep; you missed all the fun stuff.

“Yep, just after you fell asleep and then about 2 hours ago,” he replied. “They’ll probably be awake soon for another,” he told her. The whole process was taking him about 2 hours so he felt like just when he was finished with one baby the other woke for a feed.

“Can you wheel them over so I can see them?” She asked then.

“Of course,” Max agreed and moved the cribs so that Liz could see them both. She reached out touched their little hands. “God they really are the most beautiful things in the whole world,” she whispered.

“I know,” Max agreed.

“You know we really need to give them names before everyone arrives,” Max reminded her. He had been thinking about what to name them all night as he sat watching over them but nothing came to mind which seemed to be perfect for either of them.

Liz studied their little faces then as she thought about the perfect name for her children.

“What do you think of Lachlan?” She asked

“Lachlan?” Max asked as he looked down at his sleeping son, it was a name they hadn’t discussed before and he was surprised at how much he liked it.

“Lachlan and Lilly,” she added on.

“Lilly,” Max whispered. His little girl had already stolen his heart.

“Lachlan Maxwell and Lilly Elizabeth,” Max tried out.

Liz grinned; she loved how he had used their own names as middle names for their children.

“What made you think of that?” Max asked then.

“She did,” Liz said grabbing Lilly’s little hand. “I just looked at her and it was the first thing that popped in my mind. I knew you liked the idea of their names starting with the same letters and Lachlan just popped into my head and I think it suits him.”

“It does,” Max agreed.

“So we’ve decided?” Liz asked.

Max kissed her. “We’ve decided,” he agreed.

Lachlan began to stir then so Liz held her hands out to him. She opened the front of her nightgown and placed his little mouth against her breast. She wasn’t completely sure about what she was doing but she figured that it would come naturally for the most part. Lachlan found her nipple quickly and began to suckle his mother’s breasts eagerly.

Liz felt tears spring to her eyes. “Hey there sweetie, I’m your mum,” she whispered.

Max sat beside her and watched as his son suckled his mother’s breasts, and in some way he was envious. Liz’s breasts had doubled in size and his eyes lingered longingly on them.

“I can’t believe you’re getting turned on by this,” Liz chuckled when she saw him squirm and rearrange himself.

Max blushed. “Sorry,” he mumbled.

Liz looked down at Lachlan and noticed that her son had fallen back to sleep. She pulled him away gently, placed him over her shoulder, and gently rubbed his back like they had taught them in their birthing classes. After she was finished burping him, she handed him back to Max and he placed him into the crib.

They lay together on Liz’s bed for a few seconds before Lilly woke and a small cry broke free from her mouth.

“You better get her before she wakes Lachlan,” Liz smiled. It occurred to her then how drastically their lives were about to change. One baby was a lot of work but two would be a handful. It would be okay while Max was off work and able to help her but when he went back to work she would be on her own.

Max handed her Lilly and Liz smiled when she looked down at the unhappy baby. “Oh honey, you’re going to be a handful aren’t you?” She whispered. She could already see the difference in her son and daughter and she couldn’t wait to see the personalities they developed.

Lilly suckled her other breast quickly, but she didn’t drink as long as her brother before falling asleep. Liz held her in her arms a little longer not wanting to take her eyes off her for a second. She was a mother, it was her dream come true and now here she was, responsible for these two little lives.

“God I hope I can do this,” she voiced then.

“Of course you can,” Max smiled at her.

Liz watched him as he placed Lilly back into the crib for her just like he had done with Lachlan. He was so gentle in the way he touched and held them and Liz knew that he would be the best father she could ever wish for her children. Max was doing his best to hide his tiredness but he lost the he battle when a yawn finally escaped.

“Honey why don’t you go home and get a couple of hours sleep?” She suggested.

Max was about to quickly refuse but Liz wouldn’t hear it. “You can go home grab a couple of hours, shower and change and be back before everyone else gets here,” she pointed out.

“What if you need me?” He asked worried.

“There are nurses,” Liz smiled. “I’m going to need you a lot more in the next few weeks so we should take every chance we get now, to sleep,” she added sensibly.

Max looked down at his clothes then and knew she was right.

“You could bring some little outfits back for the twins too,” she suggested then, “and maybe that ring you were talking about last night,” she added more quietly.

“Oh what ring would that be?” Max teased.

“The one that tells all those nurses perving on you that you’re taken,” she smiled sweetly. “Unless you’ve changed your mind…” she trailed off then.

“Of course I haven’t,” Max smiled. “I can’t wait to tell everyone in fact,” he added.

“You don’t think they’ll be worried it’s too soon?” She asked then.

“I don’t care what they think,” he replied. “We know its right, besides we’re not talking about getting married tomorrow.”

“True,” she smiled.

“Ok, well I’ll go now but I’ll be back by 9,” he assured her.

“9.30,” Liz told him.

“Ok,” he agreed.

He walked towards the bed and kissed her soundly. “I love you,” he whispered.

“I love you too,” she whispered back.

Max caressed the twins little faces gently then before walking towards the door. And with a final longing look, back he walked through it.

Once he was gone and the door closed behind him Liz settled down into the bed deciding to take her own advice and get some sleep. Her babies would be awake in a few hours so she knew it was wise to sleep now because she wouldn’t get much later.

“Night sweeties,” she whispered. “Mummy loves you.”

***

“Good morning Miss Parker,” the nurse greeted as she breezed into Liz’s room.

“Morning,” Liz yawned and looked over at the cribs to make sure that both the twins were still sleeping peacefully.

“How are you feeling?” She asked as she pulled Liz’s blankets down and checked her wound.

Liz winced. “A little sore.”

“I’ll arrange something for you to take after breakfast,” she smiled.

She stopped to look at the babies then and smiled. “How were they last night?”

“Very good actually. I was out of it for the first couple of feedings but I got them a few hours ago,” she replied.

“Did you have any problem breast feeding?”

“No,” Liz shook her head.

“Good. After breakfast I’ll comeback and help you give them a bath if you like?” She smiled then.

Liz’s eyes lit up in excitement. “I’d love that.”

“Great, well here’s your breakfast now so I’ll see you later,” she told her as another orderly walked in with a tray of food.

“Thank you,” Liz smiled and with a final look at her two sleeping children, she dug in to her food.

***

Max looked at his watch as he got into his car. It was just after 9 and he knew he was going to be early but she couldn’t stay away a second longer. He had called Dave and informed him that Liz had the babies and that he wouldn’t be in for a few days. He would have to go in and sort a few things out before going on two weeks holidays but other than that he was free to be with Liz and his children and he couldn’t be happier about it.

He stopped at his favourite florist on the way and bought a dozen white roses for Liz, her favourite before continuing on.

When he walked into Liz’s room though it was empty and for a second he was a little concerned.

He placed the bag he had bought with him down on the bed and with flowers in hand; he walked to the nurse’s station.

“Morning,” he smiled.

“Good morning. Can I help you?” the nurse replied politely.

“I was hoping I might be able to get a vase for these flowers,” he said, “and I was also wondering if you knew where my fiancée is?” He asked smiling as the word fiancée left his mouth for the first time.

“Liz Parker, Room 102,” he explained.

“Oh not a problem,” she smiled at him. “Liz is down in the showers giving your son and daughter a bath,” she handed him a vase then. “You’re welcome to join them,” she added then.

“Thank you,” Max said.

He quickly filled the vase and shoved the flowers in it before he swiftly walked towards the showers to find Liz.

Once inside he stopped when he saw Liz. She was leaning over a bath and a nurse was instructing her how to wash their son.

Liz looked up. “Hi,” she grinned.

“Hi,” he grinned back, lifted the camera in his hand, and took a picture of her. He snapped several more of her and Lachlan wanting to capture every second if he could.

“Come here and help me,” she said then wanting Max to be apart of their children’s first bath too.

Max nodded and quickly walked towards them.

He kissed Liz lovingly before he pulled up his sleeves and helped her gently wash their small son’s body.

The nurse smiled at them. They were a beautiful couple together and so obvious in love, and now they were a beautiful family.

Part 28

“How are you feeling?” Max asked as he helped Liz in the bathroom. Because of her stiches she couldn’t get into the shower straight away so had to be content with a wash, something that Max was more than happy to help her with.

Liz smiled down at him from her seat on the toilet seat. Lachlan and Lilly were sleeping peacefully for the time being but Liz suspected that would be short lived with visiting hours opening very soon she knew that their families and friends would bombard them.

“Sore but happy,” she told him.

“Make sure you let me know if the pain gets too much and we can see about getting you something,” Max told her.

“I will but right now I don’t want to take anything while I’m breast feeding,” she replied.
Max nodded in understanding.

He helped Liz stand and dry off with a fluffy towel before sharing a few sweet kisses with her. “I brought your favourite pyjamas,” he smiled at her then.

Liz’s eyes lit up at the mention of her cookie monster pyjamas. She loved wearing them, not only were they comfortable but Max had told her once she looked cute as a button in them. Also, because of her very pregnant belly, she hadn’t been able to wear them in quite some time; she only hoped that they would still fit her now.

Max went to retrieve them for her and helped her step into them before leading her back to the bed.

Once Liz was settled comfortably Max sat down in the seat next to her.

“I brought something else back with me too,” he spoke up quietly.

“Yeah?” She asked.

Max nodded and lifting up from the seat and produced a black ring box from his pocket.

Liz’s eyes widened.

Max grinned.

He popped the lid open slowly, his eyes never leaving Liz’s.

“Liz Parker will you marry me?” He asked her again.

Liz felt tears spring to her eyes all over again and her hand covered her mouth to hide her gasp at the size, and beauty of the ring perched in the black box. The diamond was a teardrop with small diamonds surrounding it. It was exactly the ring she had always imagined perched on her small finger when she got married.

“Yes,” she whispered and nodded. “Of course,” she added.

Max grinned as he pulled the ring out of the box. He grasped Liz’s small hand gently then and slid the ring on her finger slowly.

“I love you,” he whispered before raising the hand to his lips and kissing it.

“I love you too,” Liz cried.

Max rose to his feet until he was leaning over Liz and able to kiss her without hurting her.

Their kisses continued until someone cleared their throat.

Their heads whipped around towards the door where Michael, Maria, Alex and Isabel all stood watching them.

“Sorry to interrupt guys,” Isabel said.

“No you’re not,” Max grinned.

“Well true, but it seemed polite to say it,” Isabel smiled as she stepped into the room.

“Now where are my beautiful niece and nephew?” She asked.

“Congratulations Liz,” she kissed her cheek.

“I can’t believe you’re a mummy Lizzie,” Maria squealed.

“Congrats guys,” Michael chimed in with a smile of his own.

Alex looked at the two small babies before looking up at his two best friends. “Good works guys,” he gave them a thumbs up causing both Max and Liz to laugh.

“Did you decide on names?” Maria asked then.

Liz was about to answer her when the Evan’s, followed by her own parents knocked on the door.

“Wow it’s a full house,” Dianne Evans chuckled as she made her way over to Max and Liz to offer her congratulations.

By the time the room quietens down enough for Liz or Max to speak at least ten minutes has passed but neither Max nor Liz mind, they just sit back and watch as their family and friends coo over their beautiful children and pass them around.

“I can believe I’m a grandad,” Jeff Parker laughs as he cradles his granddaughter.

“I know,” Nancy agrees.

“She’s just like Liz was as a baby,” he added quietly before throwing a meaningful smile at his daughter that conveyed how proud he was off her.

“So who’d like to know their names?” Max laughed then.

“Me!” Maria cried out and everyone laughed.

Standing up, Max reached for Lilly first and handed her to Liz. Michael passed Lachlan to him just as the little mans eyes open and he began to squirm.

“Well don’t keep us in suspense,” Alex told them.

“I would like to introduce you all to the newest members of the Parker Evans family. This is Lachlan Maxwell, who was born first at 7 pounds 4 ounces and 52 cm long,” Max explained.

“And this is his baby sister, Lilly Elizabeth, who is a little lighter at 7 pounds 2 ounces and only 51 cm long,” Liz added.

The room was silent as they observed the small family.

“They’re beautiful names,” Isabel finally spoke up.

“We thought so,” Max grinned proudly just as Lachlan broke into wails of hunger. Max passed him off to Liz and at the same time took Lilly out of her arms.

“Here let me take her so Lachlan doesn’t wake her,” Dianne offered.

“Thanks,” Max handed her over.

Liz undid the buttons on her top and used the nappy Max handed her to cover up so that she didn’t embarrass the men in the room before placing Lachlan against her waiting breast. As she did this, the light caught the newest addition to her finger: her engagement ring.

“Oh my God Liz!” Nancy gasped when she saw it.

“What?” Liz asked confused.

All eyes turn to where Nancy pointed at Liz’s hand.

Max smiled sheepishly when he realised they’ve been caught out.

“Is that what I think it is?” Maria asked.

“What do you think it is?” Liz smiled.

“It looks like the biggest diamond engagement ring I’ve ever seen. How much are they paying you Max?” Isabel answered.

Max rolled his eyes at his sister.

“Well you would be right Isabel. Last night Max asked me to marry him and I said yes,” Liz replied.

“Nice work Maxwell,” Michael grinned.

The room erupted in squeals of delight at the news and soon baby Lilly was joining in.

Standing Max took her from his mother and attempted to rock her back to sleep.

He smiled down at his beautiful daughter and saw what Jeff Parker was talking about earlier. His little girl looks just like her mother and he couldn’t have been happier about it.

“Oh Max, Liz, we’re so happy for you,” both parents told them.

“So are we,” Liz replied, her gaze colliding with Max and her eyes telling him everything he needed to know. That she was deliriously happy, just like he is.

“Do you have a date picked out or anything?” Isabel asked.

“No it’s still all new,” Liz replied.

“Well I’d be happy to help you with all the planning,” she spoke up then and Liz smiles at the hopeful look in her eyes.

“Thanks Isabel. I would love that and I’m sure I’m going to need it with these two keeping me busy.” Liz agreed.

Everyone stayed for a few hours until Liz began yawning.

“We’ll come by tomorrow,” they all advised.

“How long are you staying anyway?” Nancy asked her daughter.

“I’ll be here till Wednesday as long as my stiches heal ok,” she replied.

Everyone left after that leaving Max and Liz alone. Both Lachlan and Lilly were fast asleep so Max turned the light off and crawled onto the bed next to Liz and wrapped his arms around her.

“I can’t wait to take you and the twins home,” Max confessed. “I’m not going to stay at our new apartment until you’re with me.”

Liz smiled. “Really?”

“Yes. Our first night there was supposed to be together so until you and the twins are able to come home with me I’m going to sleep on an air mattress in my apartment.”

“I love you,” Liz breathed out. “Did I tell you that today?”

Max smiled but shook his head. “I don’t recall.”

“Well I do and you make me so happy, happier than I ever thought possible,” she told him.

“Me too baby. You and the twins complete me, I never thought I would ever love or cherish anything as much as I do our family.”

“Our family,” Liz smiled.

“Yep,” he grinned.

Liz lay in Max’s arms and Max watched her until she drifted off to sleep content to just watch over the woman he loved more than life itself, and his children in the cribs next to their bed.

His thoughts drifted back to the journey he had taken to get where he was at this very moment. His life was a jigsaw puzzle and it had taken him a long time to put the pieces together, to feel as complete as he did at that very moment.

Leaning over he kissed Liz’s cheek gently before he closed his eyes content in the knowledge that he would be happy with his family for a long time to come.

Epilogue

“Come here munchkin,” Max grinned as he picked his daughter up from the stroller and sat her on the rug next to Lachlan.

He wasn’t sure why but he had decided to bring the twins to the park for a few hours. Liz had gone out for the morning with Maria and Liz for some much needed girl and alone time and Max had his beautiful children to himself for the morning.

His children. He smiled down at them. He could hardly believe sometimes that they were turning one in a matter of weeks. They had both started recently walking with the help of furniture and Max knew it was slowly driving Liz crazy and not just because it was harder to keep track of them, but because their babies were growing up way too quickly.

At times, it had been hard having two small babies. It was double the work especially when they both wanted to be fed and changed at the same time. Most of the time when Max got home from work Liz was utterly exhausted, but she was always happy.

It was one of the reasons that after several long talks Liz had decided to only go back to work part time. She didn’t want to give up work altogether but she didn’t want to miss out being with the twins as much as she could. She had wanted to be a mother for so long and now it was the number one priority in her life along with Max. So she would go back to work two days a week to start with and eventually work her way up to three. Dianne Evans and Nancy Parker were both happy to take care of the twins while Liz worked which meant that Liz and Max didn’t have to find day care right away.

“Can you see the duckies?” He asked Lachlan.

The little boy’s eyes went wide and he pointed. “Da.”

Max smiled. He would never get sick of hearing that word.

“Da Da Da,” Lilly joined in.

Max had walked them to the park around the corner from their apartment. It had a small pond which often was populated with ducks. He knew Liz brought the twins here often, and that they loved to watch the ducks.

He looked around then to see if he could spot Michael or Alex who had decided to meet him with Adam and Laura, and Kyle. Kyle had become one of the group in the last year and even Max had to admit that Kyle was stand up guy. At first he hadn’t wanted to see what a nice guy he was because he knew Kyle had a bit of a thing for Liz but now that was all water under the bridge. Kyle had a girlfriend, Serena, and they were all good friends.

“Ashley come back here.”

Max looked up to see a little girl, no more than 2, fly past him and towards the water. She was moving too fast for her mother who was still quite a distance away so Max quickly moved towards her and grabbed her small hand before she rushed into the pond to touch the ducks.

“Oh my God. Thank you so much,” the woman cried once she reached them.

Max looked up, “No problem,” he said with a chuckle. He was surprised however when the women looked up from where she was looking over the small girl to find a familiar face looking back at him.

“Max!” She smiled.

Max cast a look over to the blanket where the twins were to check on them. They were moving around some but not enough to cause too much concern for the second.

“Katie, hi,” he replied.

Katie stood up then and closed the short distance between them, her arms enveloping him in what could only be described as an awkward hug.

“So this must be your little girl,” he guessed.

Katie nodded. “This is Ashley,” she explained.

“She’s beautiful,” Max told her.

“Thanks.”

“How have you been Max?” She asked then. “I’m surprised to run into you here at the park.”

“Well those two love it,” Max gestured to the blanket and his beautiful children and he took a few steps towards them so that they were now close enough that he could reach out to them if he needed.

Katie’s eyes went wide at the sight of the two babies on the blanket. “Are they yours?” She asked shocked.

“Da, Da,” Lilly chanted holding her chubby arms up to her father. Max picked her up with ease.

“Yep, they’re mine,” he grinned.

“This is Lilly,” He explained, “and that’s Lachlan.”

“Wow.”

Katie stood and watched for a few minutes as Max tended to his children. Ashley was now sitting on the rug playing with them both trying to get them to be “her babies”

Max could tell what Katie was thinking. She was wondering who the mother of his babies were, but she didn’t want to ask.

“How old are they?” She asked instead.

“They’ll be 1 on the 27th,” he replied.

Katie’s gazed wondered to Max’s hand then and she noticed immediately that his usually naked ring finger now bore a beautiful white gold band; it also looked shiny and knew.

“Liz has a big party planned,” Max continued then. He decided to get the inevitable questions out of the road quickly.

“Liz?” Katie questioned shocked.

“Yeah,” Max replied quietly.

“You got married?” Despite the fact they had been broken up for years and that she was now happily married to someone else the news that Max and Liz had in fact gotten together hurt her more than she thought. Her hurt reflected clearly on her face and Max had to look away.

“About three months ago,” he replied.

Initially Liz and Max had planned to get married six months after they had gotten engaged but things just didn’t work out that way. Liz was so busy with the twins that she didn’t have the time to plan the wedding so they decided to put it off three months and have something small and intimate.

It had worked out perfectly for everyone. The extra time had enabled Liz to fit into her dream wedding dress, a straight satin gown that had blown Max away. And the twins had been old enough by then to be carried down the aisle with Liz and her father.

They had gotten married in Dave Harrison’s gardens before having the reception at a beautiful venue near the park. The day had been perfect and everything they had both hoped it would be. Apart from the day the twins were born, Max knew that it was the happiest day in both his and Liz's life.

“I don’t know why I’m so surprised,” Katie finally found her voice and spoke.

Max opened his mouth to reply but Katie held up a hand to stop him.

“Please don’t,” she said trying to fight the tears she felt were coming. It was completely stupid. “I knew all along that what the two of you had was a lot more than friendship. Obviously you finally worked it out too.”

Max nodded.

“Are you happy?” She asked then.

Max hesitated as he tried to find a tactful way of telling his ex girlfriend he had never been happier but he realised there was no tactful way of telling someone that.

“Happier than I ever imagined,” he smiled. “Liz and these two are my life.”

“That’s good,” she nodded. “That’s all I ever wanted for you Max, to be happy and I guess I knew deep down that I wasn’t the one that was ever going to be able to give you that.”

A few tears had fallen by now and Max wasn’t sure what to do. Should he reach out and comfort her?

Katie wiped the tears away before he could react. “I’m sorry. I don’t know why I’m crying,” she admitted. “I’m happy to. I love Ashley and Charlie.”

“That’s good,” Max nodded.

“I should go,” she said then. “Thank you so much for helping with Ashley, I have no idea what would have happened if you hadn’t been there.”

“You’re welcome,” Max replied.

“Come on Ashley, we better get home,” she said to the little girl.

“It was good seeing you Max,” she said.

“You too,” Max replied.

“Pass on my congratulations to Liz,” she added then.

Max knew that despite her tears she did really mean it.

“I will.”

Max watched then as Katie walked away holding on to the small girls hands. He felt no regrets as he watched his past disappear. His future, his wife and children, were everything he had ever wanted.

“Hey Maxwell, what are you looking at?” Michael asked as he approached with Adam.

Max contemplated telling him what happened but for some reason he didn’t see the need or the point.

“Nothing Michael, nothing,” he smiled.

Alex and Laura joined them a few minutes later followed by Kyle and soon all the men were sitting around chatting while the kids played on the blanket and when lunch time came Liz, Maria, Serena and Isabel surprised them all with lunch.

That night when the twins were tucked tightly in their cots Liz joined her husband on the balcony.

Instead of taking the seat across from him though, she settled onto his lap and sighed as he pulled her close.

“You ok?” She asked.

“I’m great,” he smiled.

“I love you, do you know that?” He said then.

Liz looked down at the two beautiful rings on her finger and nodded. “Yes. I love you too.”

“I know,” he also nodded.

“I just wanted you to know how happy you’ve made me that’s all,” he kissed her.

“You’ve made me happy too. My whole life you’ve made me happy as my best friend, my lover and now my husband,” Liz replied.

“We’ve come full circle Max but we’ve come it together.”

Max smiled, Liz had summed it up beautifully.

Yes, Max Evans could say that he was happy, deliriously happy.
