Summary: Is it ever too late to follow your destiny?
Author's Note: I really shouldn't be starting another story, since I've been a bit slack updating some of my others, but I couldn't get this out of my head - so here it is.
As usual - crap summary. If you haven't already guessed from the title, this fic is inspired by 'Lips of an Angel' by Hinder. If you know the song, you'll have some kind of idea where I'm going with this. If you don't know it, I suggest you do yourself a favor and download it from iTunes

I promise it will be dreamer friendly ... eventually. Assume everything happened in the show up until almost the end of season 1 around the time Tess came to town (say 'Tess, Lies and Videotape' or 'Four Square' - I haven't quite decided).
Let me know what you think and if I should continue (or feel free to tell me not to waste my time and get back to updating my other fics like I should be doing!!)

Thanks Beautiful86 for my brand new beatiful banner!

Prologue
Lips of an Angel - Hinder
Honey why you calling me so late?
It's kinda hard to talk right now
Honey why are you crying? Is everything okay?
I gotta whisper 'cause I can't be too loud
Well, my girl's in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on
It's really good to hear your voice say my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak
And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel
It's funny that you're calling me tonight
And, yes, I've dreamt of you too
And does he know you're talking to me
Will it start a fight
No I don't think she has a clue
Well my girl's in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on
It's really good to hear your voice say my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak
And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel
It's really good to hear your voice say my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak
And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel
And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel
Honey why you calling me so late?
“Thank God I’m finally home.” Tess said, flopping down on the sofa, taking off her shoes and throwing them in the corner.
“Rough day?” Max asked, immediately lifting one of her feet onto his lap and proceeding to massage the sole of her foot.
“Mmmm … that’s good …” Tess groaned. He always knew exactly what she needed. “Tonight we had five overdoses, two car accidents and one sexual assault. I just don’t know what’s happening to this town …”
Max listened as Tess went off on one of her rants about how the emergency room at Roswell Memorial used to be lucky to see one patient a night, and even then it was generally for nothing more than a bad case of the flu. But these days, there were increasing amounts of drug and alcohol abuse, rapes, car accidents and assaults.
Both Max and Tess had been working at the hospital since finishing their medical degree in New York a year earlier. After finishing high school, they had both agreed that until they finally went ‘home’, they might as well do some good while they were stuck on Planet Earth. Max immediately decided that he wanted to use his powers to heal people, and Tess’ mindwarping abilities came in very handy to help him to cover his tracks so he didn’t get caught. They really didn’t want to find themselves back on the Special Unit’s radar.
By the time they had both received their medical degrees, in most cases they were able to help people without the use of their powers. Tess had really taken to her job at the hospital, and was doing really well for herself. Max was happy for her. After feeling ostracised when she had first come to Roswell, she finally managed to find her place in the world. Max and Tess had gone to study at NYU with the intention of leaving Roswell behind them forever, but eventually they stopped running. Isabel and Michael were both still there, and they just didn’t feel complete if the four-square wasn’t together.
After a year back in Roswell, there had still been no call from home and no alien invasion, and eventually the podsquad had resigned themselves to the fact that maybe they would never know what they were doing on Earth and if they would ever see their home.
“… And Mrs Palmer gave birth to a baby with three heads …” Tess finished.
“Huh? What?” Max asked, wondering if he had heard right.
“And I thought you weren’t listening...” Tess smiled. She could always tell when he was thinking about other things while she told him about her day. She didn’t mind though, it was just good to vent her day’s frustrations so she didn’t have to think about them again for the rest of the night. She would go crazy otherwise. Max was different though, he generally preferred not to talk about what happened at the hospital, as if it would contaminate the little sanctuary they had built for themselves.
“Ha ha.” Max smiled, pushing Tess’ foot away and playfully swiping her with the nearest pillow.
“So what’s the plan for tonight?” He asked, making his way to the kitchen to grab an OJ. It was after 11pm but he knew Tess always took a while to settle her mind from a day at work. She wouldn’t be ready to sleep for another couple of hours. Max could live on very little sleep himself, which was a good thing since he had a 5am start in the morning. It was rare that their shifts ever coincided.
“I thought maybe we could just watch a movie and laze in front of the TV. I’m so beat.” Tess sighed for effect.
“Sounds good.” Max replied, looking around for his mobile which he had intended to put on the charger after finding it had gone flat during the day.
“Have you seen my phone?” Max asked, scanning the kitchen.
At that moment the home phone began to ring, and Tess reached behind the cushion she was leaning against, to pull out the phone that had fallen behind.
“Will this do?” Tess asked, handing it to Max. She really wasn’t in the mood to answer it, and it was probably for Max anyway – his sister was always calling him this late at night. “If it’s the hospital tell them we’re not here.”
“Hello?” Max answered the phone.
“Max?” A familiar voice said.
“Isabel, hey.” Max said, indicating to Tess that he would take the call in the bedroom. Tess just rolled her eyes - Isabel was obviously having another one of her dramas.
“Liz?” Max whispered, as soon as he was sure he was out of Tess’ hearing range. “What are you doing calling me at home? Tess is here.”
“I tried your mobile but it was switched off.” Liz replied, almost sobbing. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have called...”
“No. It’s okay. I’m glad you did. I’ve missed you.” Max softened his voice, mentally kicking himself for sounding so harsh. She sounded upset. “What’s wrong?”
“I … I had a bad dream that’s all. I just needed to know that you were okay.” Liz replied. “I was worried about you.”
“I’m fine.” Max smiled, his heart skipping a beat to hear that Liz was so concerned about him that she would risk everything to hear that he was okay. He couldn’t help but muse about how it was such a long way from where they used to be.
“I was thinking about you earlier.” Max confessed, settling onto the bed.
“Really?” Liz seemed to cheer up at the thought.
“Yeah…” Max smiled. God it was good to talk to her again. He knew he should end the conversation, with the potential risk that Tess could overhear his conversation, but it just wasn’t physically possible to hang up the phone. He didn’t have the willpower. “I was thinking about how much I wanted to be wherever you were.”
“That’s sweet. Especially since I was knee deep in a broken toilet and a broken dishwasher today.” Liz replied, thinking about what a terrible day she had. It wasn’t surprising she was having bad dreams to top off her day from hell. Talking to Max was the only good thing that had happened to her all day.
‘Liz – who are you talking to so late?’ Max heard the unmistakable tones of Liz’s dad’s voice in the background.
“Just Maria, Dad.” Liz replied, covering the mouthpiece of the phone. “I’m sorry to wake you.”
“So your Dad’s in town?” Max said to Liz, when he was sure she had finished talking to her Dad.
“Yeah, he and mum are just blowing through on their way to Santa Fe. They’re staying the night.” Liz explained.
“I take it he still hates me.” Max stated, guessing exactly why Liz had lied about who she was talking to.
“I don’t know that I would say ‘hate’… But I just really didn’t want to start an argument.” Liz explained. That’s all she needed today – to continue the never ending fight with her father over her friendship with Max.
“I’d better go.” Max announced, really not wanting to, but he didn’t want either of them to get caught. He hated this sneaking around. If only things had been different …
“Okay…” Liz replied reluctantly. “Max?”
“Yeah?” Max whispered. God he loved the way she whispered his name – as though he was her lifeline.
“Do you think Tess knows… you know, about us?” Liz asked.
“No.” Max smiled. “I don’t think she has any idea.”
“Okay… Goodnight Max.” Liz replied.
“Goodnight Liz.” Max replied, before hanging up the phone.
“I love you.” They whispered simultaneously to the dial tone.
