Summary: The night where Max and Tess slept together Tess sees inside Max's soul and disheartened at what she finds.

Mood Music: Lover I Don't Have To Love by Bright Eyes from LIFTED

Tess never thought that she would be put in a situation like this.

She never thought that her first time would be less then something special. No she wasn’t expecting magical orchestra music to play nor was she expecting rose petals and candle light. But she didn’t expect it to be so much work.

It was hard enough just to get him to come into the observatory with her. But now as she stood before him trying to get him to undress her was like pulling teeth.

She knew she was attractive she had Kyle in the palm of her hand and knew how her body could and did affect him. She was beautiful and she thought that Max would be one of the very men to appreciate her beauty.

But he was lost in his own world and he didn’t seem to be paying much attention to her at all. His eyes were empty. His face worn. She knew that he wasn’t so much as looking at her but looking through her. He was too caught up in his pain to even think about her.

Well she didn’t really have to enjoy herself, this was business really. Kivar wanted an heir and she would give it to him. However in the back of her mind she wanted this to be a memorable experience.

She wanted what Ava and Zan had. Why couldn’t they just be those two people. Why couldn’t Max understand that they were destined to be together. This would make everything so much easier. She decided that she would have to take the first step.

She slowly pulled off her top hoping that more skin would entice him, she lowered him down to the floor and slowly mounted him. Maybe if she got things going things would just take over naturally. He was a teenage male and from what she heard it took little to nothing to turn them on.

She lowered her mouth to kiss him and was cut with a flash, it was a memory of Max with Liz they were shooting pool and Max was losing badly and Liz cleaned his cheek of the blue chalk that stained it. The vision cut like a knife to both her heart and her confidence.

After everything they went through with the skins, when they went to New York, their kiss, the memory retrieval and all he could think about was her. Why was she always made to feel like an outsider even in their relationship. The book said they were supposed to be together. Even his mother’s message told him that they belonged together yet he still refused her. His heart was supposed to belong to her yet she was the farthest thing from it. It was all about Liz.

She decided that she would drive Liz away from his mind by using her body. She eagerly undressed herself and Max as well.

She kissed him and just ended up receiving more flashes. This time she saw Max doing ridiculously romantic things. He made a street light shine like a disco ball, he turned a blaring car alarm into the most beautiful sound from a music box and then he turned parking meters into sparklers. She kept on hearing the phrase “Happily ever after” in his head.

She continued to ride on top of him and was horrified to see that all he could think about was her. His phrase kept taunting her. She would never get her happily ever after from this man. She would never get her happily ever after from her rightful husband. It was like a joke the universe played on her. She was an interloper to his mind and his body and she knew that now. Why can’t he love me that way? I’m his queen. I waited for him.

But he had forgotten her from the second he left the pod chamber. She may have been a friend, a confidant but that was only when he couldn’t find Liz, Isabel or Michael. Only when he was alone did he truly come to her. She was the furthest thing on his mind when they went to Vegas. She could see the way they danced. How close they were. How her eyes sparkled for her. She looked at his eyes. They were dead. Lifeless he couldn’t have been further removed from her then if he were on Antar. He wasn’t enjoying this. He was thinking of fonder memories. He wasn’t with her. He never really was. Then she felt it. She got another flash. This time it was when Max was young, his first day of third grade. The first time his eyes saw Liz Parker.

She was overcome with this warm feeling. It was bright and beautiful and she thought she could feel it within herself. That’s what love was. She was starving and she wanted it. She wanted to feel Max’s love…but it wasn’t for her. It was for Liz. She realized that this was the closest thing she would ever come to Max loving her. She was merely an extension, a vessel to distract him while he thought about Liz.

She saw his fantasies about making love to Liz. She felt him stiffen and knew that he would reach his culmination soon. Then it happened and she was overwhelmed with his thoughts of Liz and happily ever after’s.

After it was over and they began to come down off their temporary high she felt him. His heaving shoulders, his low gasps and the wetness on her shoulder. He was crying.

As if the night couldn’t have gotten even worse he was crying after he had sex with her. She rubbed his back. No this was not what she thought her first time would be.

But then Tess reasoned that she didn’t need a happily ever after. She didn’t need the music, the love or the candles, she was the Queen and she wanted her rightful place. She had duty to uphold and she couldn’t be weighed down by human emotions.

Nothing would compromise her place on the thrown and even if the title was in name only at least she would have that. She wanted to be Queen all her life and she would be. She didn’t care about anything else.

The alternative to not being Queen was something she couldn’t begin to comprehend.
